Fusion Festival - celebrating Cooroy THE 2014 Cooroy Fusion Festival will be held on Saturday 10 May 2014, from 9am to 3pm on Maple Street and the Lower Mill Precinct.

The 2014 free one-day festival is inclusive and engaging, offering something for all ages and tastes! The program includes, a free jumping castle for the kids, Tai Chi and Zumba demonstrations, WWII army vehicles, Classic Cars, music ranging from Bagpipes and School Bands, from Choirs to Acoustic sets.

Check out what our local talented teens have to offer, with Noosa District High students exhibiting their own documentaries, Claymation and promo films at the library, and the proud Year 9’s showing off their pottery at the Butter Factory. Teens can also get online, visiting the library to create their Sponsors and own online digital game through Scratch 2.0. For the kids there’s an environmentally-themed circus performance of Bazil and Grumble, Kindermusik, and Lego to keep them entertained throughout the day. Kids can get their faces painted and play with some hands-on art activities while you check out the artist markets at the Butter factory The afternoon highlight will be the Acoustic Fusion session by Asa Broomhall and Country singer Neil Duddy in the Cooroy Bendigo Community Bank Entertainment Tent.

Amnesia Corrupts – A Disease of the Times These days when people are suspected of serious misdemeanors, The Government has an inquiry, and calls in the political cleaners.

These inquiries cost real money, a considerable expense, The amount they cost the taxpayer, is unbelievably immense.

It is interesting with these official inquiries, really quite intriguing, To see the arrival of a new disease, which attacks at every proceeding.

It is called Amnesia Corruptis, and seems to be present in the air, And strikes an inquiry witness box, and the person sitting there.

The usual trigger is a question from the “counsel assisting”, And then more probing questions, with counsel firmly persisting.

Then a look of relief appears on the witness’s face, He shakes his head and says, “ I can’t remember if that took place”.

Question after question comes, he still claims he can’t recall, Amnesia Corruptis has come to the rescue, to build a legal wall.

He’s asked about some conversation, and if what he said was correct, And gives the usual answer “I’m sorry, I cannot recollect”.

When he gets a really curly one, about something quite illegal, He claims he’s sttuck with memory loss, which annoys the legal eagle.

He has to try to look at ease, and endure the pain, Of Amnesia Corruptis, and the journey down memory lane.

He gets some questions on e-mails, gifts, and phone calls, None of those things happened, not that he recalls.

Honesty may be a policy which offers a bit of moral sense, But insanity or Amnesia Corruptis, suggest the best defence.

I suggest it is time to have another inquiry at once, To inquire whether some inquiries are genuine, or really political witch hunts!!!!

Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch AS distinct from the Cooroy RSL Club, which is a business, the Sub Branch is welfare and commemorative organisation which is registered with the Australian Taxation Office and the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission. The RSL in Australia is by far the largest such organisation.

The RSL Sub Branch commenced in Cooroy in 1920, meeting in the early School of Arts and other venues until the Memorial Hall was established in 1926. In 1937 a separate Diggers Hall was erected and subsequently rules were formulated for establishing a club for returned and ex-service personnel in 1948. The Club was reconstituted to allow citizen membership in a new building as a standalone business in 1979. Although the two organisations operate on the same premises they are independent of each other.

The Sub Branch is entirely a volunteer organisation with its main business being Pensions, Advocacy and Welfare Services (PAWS) and Commemorative activities. The PAWS team is made up of a Tribunal Advocate, a Pensions Officer, one Welfare Officer/JP and five Welfare Officers who provide various services to veterans, the service community and their dependants.

Many within the veteran and ex-service community have suffered disabilities due to their service and require pensions and advocacy assistance to gain disability pensions or have those disabilities recognised, many are also in need of assistance of a welfare nature in their day-to-day activities.

Significant activities which the Sub Branch was involved in last year included: Hospital visits. The Eden Rehabilitation Hospital is located in

Cooroy, its catchment ranges from Brisbane out to Kingaroy and up to Bundaberg. At any one time there will be 8 – 15 veterans, ex-service people or widows recuperating in Eden.

Each of these people receive at least one visit each week from a welfare officer. The Kabara Nursing Home, in Cooroy currently accommodates around forty veterans, ex-service people or their widows. Most of these people receive a visit each week from a welfare officer.

Further, members who reside in other nursing homes in the area also receive visits. Home visits are also provided to other members of the ex-service community where necessary. In addition to these visits weekly phone contact is maintained with others in the community who might be lonely or at risk. The welfare bus supports the activities of the Sub Branch by taking elderly members shopping, to medical appointments and outings. On welfare type activities alone it travelled some 14,500 km and carried some 840 people during 2013.

Other activities which the Sub Branch engages in include the hosting of a lunch for service widows, hosting of a lunch for WW2 and Korea veterans, arranging commemora-

tions for ANZAC Day, Vietnam Veterans Day and Remembrance Day . Prior to ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day Sub Branch members visit the six schools in the district to take part in there commemorative services.

During 2013 the Sub Branch made donations to 17 community organisations to the extent of $7,000. In order to fund its activities the Sub Branch conducts the Thursday night raffles at the Club, sells memorabilia prior to ANZAC and Remembrance Days and seeks grants. Support for these activities is always welcome. During 2013 the Sub Branch recorded some 6,000 volunteer hours having been expended on PAWS and Commemorative activities, a significant community effort.

It is expected that there are a number of veterans and ex- service members within the community who are not currently members of the Sub Branch and may be missing out on the benefits of membership. They are invited to make contact with members and join, an ideal time to make contact is Monday mornings when the PAWS team are working within the Club in Maple Street.

Battle of the Coral Sea IN April 1942, after just four months of the Pacific War, Japan had virtually taken and occupied the South West Pacific and achieved what they expected would take two years. Now they intended to isolate Australia, by taking Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, and so placing North Eastern and Eastern Australia within easy bomber range, depriving the Allies of a major and important base for a counter offence. The situation was tense and Australia was in a very vulnerable position. On the 5th of May, 1942, the Battle of the Coral Sea began, a naval battle which was unique, in that the surface ships of both sides did not sight each other at any time. It was solely an air engagement, and although the Allies were superior in land based planes they were inferior in all other arms. It was also the first time Australian ships fought with the America Navy as allies in arms. The Anzac Squadron, commanded by Rear Admiral Grace, was successfully involved in preventing the invasion force reaching Port Moresby, the gateway to New Guinea and to Australia. On the 8th of May the scout planes from both sides sighted their opponents, and the American aircraft opened the

attack on the Japanese fleet, and shortly after the Japanese retaliated. Both sides scored direct hits and torpedo bombers came into play. Aircraft carriers were maneuvering at 30 knots, and many near misses occurred. The main action was fierce, but it was over by midday. The Japanese could be considered, tactically, as the victors, trading the loss of a light carrier and some minor vessels, against the American losses of a fleet carrier, a destroyer, and an oiler. Aircraft losses were Japan 74 aircraft and 808 personnel, America 75 aircraft and 625 personnel. But overall, it was a major strategically reverse for the Japanese, and it marked the limits of their expansion into the South Pacific. With the Battle of Midway, one month later, it was the decisive action of the Pacific War. The Japanese advance had been checked, and they found themselves on the defensive, and ultimately in defeat. It is interesting to recall the words of the Japanese chief of navy, the brilliant Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, to the notorious Premier Tojo “If I am told to fight, I shall run wild for the first six months, but I have utterly no confidence for the second and third years”.

Best western to be performed at NDSHS THE Noosa District State High School performing arts students have begun rehearsals for this year’s school musical, Calamity Jane.

Students have begun to learn their lines, choreograph dance routines and set and costume design is now underway.

The musical will take place at the school in Term 3, with the matinee on Wednesday, August 5 and opening night on Thursday, August 6.

Calamity Jane will run over three nights, with the final show on Saturday, August 9th.

A country and western, Calamity Jane themed gold coin donation dress day is planned in the latter part of Term 2 to raise funds for Queensland’s farmers.

Our IGA has been based on our local Cooroy IGA and bears many resemblances to it’s much larger counterpart ie: great variety and wonderful staff Our store hours, however, are a little unique: Monday to Friday 6am - 8am and 3pm - 5pm (this allows store cleaning) and closed Saturdays and Sundays.

The COSHC IGA includes two checkout stations; staff photos, including job titles and an employee of the week; name badges; play money, replica credit and IGA reward cards; IGA brochures: shopping baskets, an ATM machine, specials board, community notice board (with some

very interesting items for sale!); handbags and dress ups … we have even had a busker playing guitar and a sausage sizzle out front one afternoon!

The children and staff have collected empty food packets and bottles which create a multitude of groceries. So much so, that we had to expand our store and create a centre isle to accommodate all our stock!

The children have demonstrated resourcefulness by adding cardboard boxes for trolleys and recycled the cardboard car from our Christmas in Cooroy float and transformed into a delivery truck!

AS so many of our local primary school aged students know, Harold the Giraffe is synonymous with the Life Education program. Well, Harold is back and he has a brand new home.

The old Life Education Van provided our kids with drug and health education in Noosa for many years, and now a brand new van will continue that good work and help empower one

million young Australians each year to make safe choices.

Life Education was established 30 years ago to teach children ways to keep their bodies healthy and to equip them with the skills to make appropriate choices and a way of learning to stay secure in potentially unsafe situations. It remains a not-for-profit organisation, which operates in close partnership with our local schools and communities and relies on student fees and local community funding to meet costs and that’s where Bendigo Bank has helped to subsidize the program.

In fact, apart from funding the Life Education program for the past seven years, locals voted at a Tewantin Community Forum held

by Bendigo Bank in 2011 to make funding the new van a priority. So the plan has been in place since then, making this outcome all the more positive for our community.

Through its sponsorship, the Tewantin Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, via its

“Their funding of $40,000 along with other sponsors’ generosity will now provide a legacy for our children for the next 20 years,” said Ms Andrinopoulos.

As a primary school

teacher of 21 years, Niki travelled to 22 schools from Gympie to Yandina in 2013 and around 8,000 children accessed the program. Each session is presented by educators who are fully qualified teachers and have undergone additional training in the area of drug education. On a local level, CooloolaNoosa Life Education Association Inc. was formed in 1995 and from humble beginnings with very little backing the program is now seen as an essential component of every child’s educa-

tion. “The new van means the children in the Cooloola-Noosa region will have access to the Life Education program for years to come.

I see Life Education as an integral part of a child’s time at school. In the younger grades we aim to teach children about their body and how it works. The aim of our senior classes is to help students develop a sound understanding of their body and well-being, so they understand how special and truly unique they are,” Niki said.

NCC Students Serve in Vanuatu 18 STUDENTS plus six adults from Noosa Christian College, Cooroy (NCC) travelled to the island of Aore (pronounced “ow-ree”) for an Overseas Service Trip.

Departing from Brisbane International Airport the team proved to be quite a spectacle with their check-in luggage containing ‘unusual’ travel items such as three lawn-mower chassis, six trailer tyres, numerous power tools and some essential food items.

Led by Noosa Christian College (NCC) Principal, Mr David Rogers, students were assigned to various teams to complete service projects at Aore Adventist College over their 12-day stay on the island. These included; Students did enjoy some time off for sightseeing and their favourite visit was to the ‘Blue Hole’ on the island of Santo, with vivid clear blue waters.

NCC’s staff and students would like to thank the school families and community members for the financial support of the service projects, and also express their gratitude to Cooroora Family Practice for the kind donation of travel vaccinations.

Learning in the garden PREP K students at Cooroy State School were very excited to be able to harvest their corn crop they have watched grow over the last few months.

IN yet another example of the community working with police to keep Cooroy safe I would like to very much thank members of this great community for helping police apprehend a juvenile offender hell bent on a crime spree through town.

At about 9.30pm on Friday night police received numerous calls from the community regarding a loud and violent disturbance in the vicinity of the Maple and Tulip Street intersection. Police quickly attended and were able to detain a drunken and highly aggressive juvenile walking along the street holding a number a large rocks stating that he was intent on rampaging through town. Due to the vigilance of the community police were able to apprehend this juvenile and potentially prevent numerous other instances of damage around town.

As it was, the juvenile had already badly damaged a council bus shelter so a big well done and thank you to witnesses who phoned this through as believe it or not a less proactive community could have just as easily turned a blind eye to this conduct as I’ve seen happen in other communities with people not wanting to get involved.

Neil Dixon opened his trailer business, Dixon Trailers, on the Southside Industrial Estate, Du Rietz Court, GYMPIE, in December last year.

Neil first started making trailers 20 years ago, making farm monocot 14ton grain tipping trailers for the tractors that were coming out at the time with 50km road speeds.

“At the same time I was doing farm machinery maintenance repairs,” said Neil. “Later I went on to end up managing a 1200 acre cropping block in central south island NZ growing several different specialised seeds like carrots for the European market, white clover, rye grass some of which was exported to Australia. While working in this position I was still maintaining some of the latest cropping machinery with a company fleet of 13 John Deere tractors, vadestad drills and cultivation equipment.

“After moving to Australia I was always keen to get back into the manufacturing side of things for the satisfaction of building and accomplishing a quality product,” said Neil.

Dixon Trailers manufactures quality trailers from their designs or are custom built to the needs of customers. They are galvanised to

avoid rust problems or painted if requested.

“We have currently built a 3000kg flat bed trailer 4.2m long and 2.1m wide with aluminium drop sides, electric brakes on all 4 wheels, rocker/roller suspension, electric breakaway, and low tear weight.

They first met back in 1971 when they were students together at the Dalby Central State School. Together they journeyed together through their school life until they finished their Junior certificate while attending the Dalby State High School. On the final day of school, the bell rang just as it had done for the years of their school life. They hugged each other good bye and parted ways.

Many years were to pass until Jacky Irons and Heather Ford had a meeting by chance on facebook. They arranged to meet up and exchange the history of their past from school days and teachers they liked and didn’t like, and what their life experiences have been since that last school bell rang. It is only by chance they found themselves living only a few km’s from each other.

Chats on facebook and catching up with each other in town has enriched their friendship once again.

The old saying ‘the past will always catch up with you’ is a true and happy event for these two long time friends.

Sculpture reflects rich agricultural and natural heritage A NEW Kenilworth entry sculpture installed by Sunshine Coast Council reflects the rich agricultural, artistic and natural heritage of the region.

Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson said the new entry sculpture, inspired by the Mary River, acknowledges the authentic historical and natural heritage of the area through an artistic project.

“The artist chosen was acclaimed local artist Cezary Stulgis who has extensive experience on large landscape projects,” Cr Rogerson said.

“The final artwork depicts symbolic imagery of local terrain, flora and fauna and is constructed out of sturdy steel designed to give a rustic appearance that will last for many years.

“The sculpture has been installed on the corner of Elizabeth and Charles Street in a prominent position to welcome visitors to the town.

Born in Poland, Cezary Stulgis is a sculptor, painter and designer whose highly distinctive work fuses ‘next-level’ aesthetics with classical craftsmanship – a reflection of his artistic roots in the street art movement of the mid-eighties and formal training as a sculptor and painter at the renowned Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Poland.

Cezary’s unique style and interdisciplinary skillset has earned him a reputation internationally as a creative and technically proficient professional artist.

Tall Trees Art Exhibition

Cooking lessons back on at the Community House!

Last year’s People’s Choice winner Lew Brennan COORAN’S annual art extravaganza – the Tall Trees Art Exhibition is on again on the weekend of 17-18 May 2014 showcasing the talents of Cooran and surrounding hinterland artists in our ‘pop up gallery’ in the Cooran Memorial School of Arts in the main street of Cooran. Opening hours for the exhibition are 9am to 5pm all Saturday and Sunday.

The official Opening Night is being staged on the evening of Friday 16 May with a preview and creative conversations from 5.30pm followed by guest speakers Councillor Bob Abbot and Matt Holmes from Highly Strung in Eumundi.

This will be the 6th Tall Trees Exhibition and this year it will feature some of the previous ‘peoples choice’ award

winners including Lew Brennan and Peter Teakle. Lew is well known on the Coast of course, and has recently had a successful solo exhibition in Mooloolaba. You can come along and vote for your favourite artwork again this year. Also exhibiting are digital photography masters, Rob Roy and Mia Hacker, glass artist Jason Makeig, painters Deb Dougherty, Lynda Black, Noela Flack, Julie Hauritz, Leigh Hooker, sculptors/ceramacists Phil Willy and Faith Robinson, printmaker Shirley Strano, wood turner Jeff Fraser, just to name a few. A diverse and spectacular exhibition built on a strong sense of community and resourcefulness, this Exhibition will showcase a wonderful breadth of creativity and artistic talent in the hinterland.

AFTER a lull in activity down at the kitchen of the Pomona & District Community House, cooking lessons are about to start up again. Long-time chef, Sean Bowman, will be heading up a series of 5 lessons which will cover a variety of themes including hearty casseroles and delicious Thai food.

Retired for some years after a career in the food industry spanning over thirty years, Sean says he is looking forward to donning his apron once again and passing on some of his skills. “There’s nothing quite like the aroma of delicious food made with good local products, steaming away on the stove.”

The first lesson will be a “hamper scamper” combining foods from the $35.00 food hamper available from Food Connection in Pomona (at the Options 4 U Op Shop in Memorial Avenue) with a few other ingredients. “You don’t need a whole array of expensive, fancy foods to make food taste great”, says Sean, “I’ll show participants some wonderful alternatives. At only $10.00 a lesson for concession card holders and seniors, which includes eating the food we’ve made, the lessons are a really good bargain.”

ON Wednesday 14th May, visitors to the next ‘Community Connect’ morning tea will find themselves entertained with comedy and poetry.

Comedy duo, ‘the Misfits’, will be presenting an assortment of skits which they say are, “short, imaginative acts that are light-hearted, funny, sometimes serious, but always entertaining.” The Misfits, otherwise known as Jim and Helen, started with an idea for a single skit over a year ago and now, they say, ideas come rushing nonstop.

‘Misfits’ have performed at the Cooran Acoustic Night and at other ‘Open Mic’ venues on the Sunshine Coast. Their plan is to present their comedy to a much larger audience.

When John Kenna starts talking, you can feel his love and respect of the land and his passion for preserv-

ing the environment. John will tell his story, and use his heartfelt poetry to paint a picture of a world that was - where men and women often did it tough, but where those experiences nurtured strength of character and individuality.

Community Connect is an opportunity for locals to speak about or present something that they are passionate about. It’s a chance to meet and to get to know new people in a fun and friendly environment.

The team at Intouch Physio and Musculoskeletal Clinic CHRONIC pain is an enormous growing public health issue, says Soft Tissue Therapist Bec Mills from In Touch Physio and Musculoskeletal Clinic, Cooroy.

“One in every five Australians lives with chronic pain including adolescents and children.

“The most common problems experienced by my patients over the past 8 years stem from biomechanical imbalances. When certain groups of muscles are over used, and other groups of muscles are under used, the body tends to develop various compensatory patterns. These patterns can lead to all kinds of complaints involving the musculoskeletal system and impact the quality of our lives. Musculoskeletal pain can occur for a variety of reasons; repetitive actions and tired posture are the two most common causes of musculoskeletal dysfunction I see in clinical practice.

“Typically, those suffering from ongoing joint stiffness, muscle tightness and body aches will often experience neck and shoulder, lower back and hip pain, difficulty sleeping and decreased movement and mobility.

“In good cases, treatment might be as simple as musculoskeletal assessment, soft tissue therapy or remedial massage coupled with self-care homework such as stretching and Pilates exercises. In more complex cases, a comprehensive treatment plan involving a multi-modality approach such as Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Podiatry, Osteopathy and Chiropractic Therapy may be required.

“Understanding the role of core muscles groups, learning the benefits of exercise techniques such as stretching and strengthening is a great start to addressing the everyday pain that so many people “just put up

with. You might be surprised to know that the majority of chronic musculoskeletal pain can be resolved by correcting core imbalances. This involves identifying weak underused muscles so they can be strengthened, and identifying the tight over worked muscles, so they can be lengthened. Achieving optimal balance between strong and weak muscles requires dedication to treatment plans, exercising regularly and a healthy work life balance. Having a careful assessment and the right treatment plan from an experienced professional can make all of the difference.”

What to avoid when experiencing chronic pain: Delaying treatment – getting the problem looked at quickly will help reduce your recovery time; Single-focused treatment – ensure to get assessed by a professional who is open to referring you to other modalities as this may be required; A short term recovery plan – the root cause of chronic musculoskeletal pain should always be explained to you; ensure you have a long term plan to correct the root cause of the injury.

Impact made at National Titles

Sam Cameron-Hands, Ben Cameron-Hands, Cian Jones, Payton Aird-Cardiff THE Impact Boxing Academy definitely made an IMPACT at the 2014 National Australian Titles held in Perth this month. The Impact Box-

ing Academy won 3 Gold and 1 Silver from the 5 boxers that competed.

Ben Cameron- Hands won his second Australian title in as many

Payton Aird-Cardiff won her 54 kg under 15 female Australian Title by way of a walk over as there were no other opponents at that weight.

Payton then stepped up to the 57kg division to challenge the Australian champion Chloe Town.

Both girls boxed extremely well with Chloe being awarded the bout with a split points decision.

Taylah Robertson (not present for the photo) won her 48kg junior female Australian title with a majority points decision over Lolli Medcalf from NSW Taylah’s footwork & continual pressure was to much for Lolli to handle..

Cian Jones won the silver medal in his 40kg bout against Jay Fawcett

from NSW. This bout was action packed as both boys had their moments. Fawcett was awarded the decision by way of a split points decision.

Sam Cameron-Hands was extremely unlucky to be eliminated in his semi final bout. Sam’s opponent was Bailey Seabourne from Tasmania. Sam started in his usual aggressive manner & had Bailey on his back foot for the most of round 1.

Round 2 seen the tides turn a little as Bailey came out the more aggressor. With one round each under their belt the boys came out for round three knowing that whoever won this round would win the fight and move into the finals.

Both boys gave it their all until the final bell. In a decision that could have gone either way, Bailey was awarded the win with a split points decision.

“I am so proud of these kids and what they have

achieved,” said coach Mark Evans. They have earned their spot on the Queensland team and have climbed onto the National stage to compete against the best boxers in the country.

Just being here is an achievement regardless of the result. To win gold here is to be the best in the country and it doesn’t get any bigger than that. In true Impact style Benny and Payton were not happy with a walk over so they both challenged the Australian Champions in different divisions just to get fights.

“Win, lose or draw its all about learning and gaining the experience needed to constantly keep improving and these kids are improving beyond my wildest expectations.

I would also like to thank everyone for their continued support, your support means the world to these kids and myself.

Alec “The Annihilator” digs deep for victory ALEC “The Annihilator” Aird-Cardiff showed the crowd exactly what he is made of when the Impact crew travelled to Bundaberg last month. Alec was struck with a crippling low blow in round one which he took an eight count for and managed to recover from and then finish the round with some superb combinations. Towards the end of round two he started dry retching and only just made it to the final bell.

He had started feeling a little unwell prior to the fight but in typical Alec fashion he assured me that he was fine and still wanted to fight. I offered him the chance to end the fight right there and then to which he assured me he had one more round left in him and he would be fine. With that being said and done Alec came flying out of his corner to give it his all. Both boys threw everything that they had left in them until the final bell rang. With nothing left in the tank Alec’s hand was raised in a split points victory.

“Words cannot describe how proud I am of Alec. He has shown us that he can dig deep & when the odds are against him he can overcome adversity and taste victory.

Something rarely found in a boxer of his young age,” coach Mark Evans said.

THURSDAY MAY 8TH will see the Brisbane Lions visit Pomona Cooroy AFL at the foot of the Pomona Mountain.

Pomona Cooroy AFL club have received notification that they have been one of a select few to receive a visit from the Brisbane Lions this season. Capping off what has been a tremendous start to the season by the Demons. With up to four members of the AFL club planning a meet and greet with all players as well as involving themselves in the training session.

ing set in most age divisions. Early results see our U16 side undefeated leading up to the Easter break. Coach Bill Magin continues to produce the magic moulding a great team unit. Congats to Cody Burdan for being selected in the highly credited U16 rep side the Sunshine Coast Power.

The club under 14 side is also coming together and have only tasted defeat once leading into Easter, This group of never say Demons have fought back from as much as 4 goals down to win some exciting games. With great coaching and some very good girls in the team their season is also off to a tremendous start.

Under 12s are sitting high on the ladder enjoying a great team atmosphere and tremendous parent support. These guys are a treat to watch as they play a high skilled brand of football for such a young side. They really enjoy their football and are a credit to their coach and families.

Our youngest U8 and U10 Demons have performed well at all games this season including the pre-season carnival at Mudjimba.

They have also had the exciting Gabba expe-

rience of playing during the half time break at the LIONS V GEELONG game. These guys are our future Demons and it is great to see them receiving great coaching from Paul and Mick.

THERE’S a surge in popularity for AFL in the Noosa Hinterland.

The Pomona Cooroy Demons have seen record sign on numbers for 2014 with all teams having a great start to the season.

After a bye in round 1 the U16s had a solid win against Bribie Island in round 2. Round 3 saw AFL at its finest with a hard fought battle against Caloundra. A quiet first half from Pomona saw us down by 38 points at half time. The action picked up in the third quarter with Pomona kicking 7 goals, 1 point to Caloundra’s 1 goal, two points. An intense final quarter saw the score drawn with two minutes to go. Great team work from

Pomona saw one more goal across the line with less than a minute to go to see the Dees win by a goal.

We’ve seen some great action from the U14s with two wins and one loss so far. The U12s are sitting on top of the ladder with three healthy wins to start the season. And the U8s and U10s are full of energy and giving it 100%.

Under 10 Champions!

NOOSA Touch had nine junior teams travel to Caboolture last month to contest the Sunshine Coast and Fraser District Regional Championships.

The boys and girls teams competed in divisions ranging from Under 10’s right through to Under 18’s.

It was a great event with all teams enjoying the day, tasting success in the round games and progressing to at least the quarter final stage. Congratulations to the Under 10, 12 and 16 boys for making the grand final. It was a

case of so close for the Under 12’s (6-4) and Under 16’s (4-3) with both teams going down against old foes Caboolture.

Then we move on to our Regional Champions the Under 10 boys.

They had a strong win (9-5) against Kingaroy.

The game was try for try until the Noosa boys stepped it up and ran away with it. They were undefeated all day and had a ton of fun both on and off the field.

Gymnast of the Month

CHARLOTTE is our Cooroy Gymnastic’s development Gymnast of the Month.

Charlotte is four years old and started gymnastics in February when she came along to a “try a sport day”. When she saw other children doing gymnastics she wanted to join in straight away.

Her favourite things to do at gymnastics are log rolls and swinging on the ropes (Charlotte is the best pirate when we practice swinging out to our pirate ship).

Gymnastics is Charlotte’s first sport and she loves to learn new skills and having fun.
