Huge bank of talent at Cooroy Fusion Festival Cooroy Fusion Festival is a much anticipated festival on the Cooroy calendar and it is no surprise given the huge line-up of talent that will be hitting the Bendigo Bank Main Stage on Saturday 11 May! The program on the main stage runs from 9am to 3.30pm and includes the Noosa District State High School String Ensemble; Noosa Pengari Steiner School Musicians; The Inadequates; Geckoes Wildlife Experience Show, Welcome to Country by Gubbi Gubbi Dance; Welcome to Community by Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton; One Billion Rising Dance which calls for a stop to violence against women; local icon Barry Charles and his band and the six piece blues and funk band Annie J and Fusion. “We are excited to once again partner with Cooroy Fusion Festival as it is a fantastic occasion for the kids, families and our entire community. You can bank on these entertainers to get the toes tapping and they will provide a great background track to the myriad of activities that happen throughout the festival,” said Simone Flavelle, Senior Branch Manager of Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. “We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of Bendigo Bank. We wouldn’t be able to provide such an extensive program of free activities for the community without the valuable support from our sponsors,” said Fusion Festival chairman, Jim Ennis. Cooroy Fusion Festival includes a huge program

of fun throughout town including stalls and entertainment at Apex Park, lots of fun in Cooroy Library and The Butter Factory Arts Centre; the Noosa District Orchid Society Annual Show at the CWA Hall; the Lifeline Denim Sale at Cooroy Memorial Hall; and woodworking displays at the Cooroora Woodworkers and Cooroy Camphor Laurel Group in Lower Mill Road.

Don’t forget the library With so much going on at Cooroy Fusion Festival, it would be easy to forget to visit Cooroy’s award-winning library on Saturday 11 May. But that would be a mistake and not just because Cooroy Library was listed as one of the six coolest libraries in the world, but also because there is so much happening inside! In the Community Access Lounge, there is the popular Lego Lounge where you might even win a prize for your creation. You can also launch into hands on, take home STEAM activities with catapults and helicopters! In the Kid’s Area is the very popular Old Macdonald’s Animal Farm sponsored by Cooroy Country Menswear and Jeanery. Get up close and cuddle with all your favourite barn yard buddies. At 10.30am the little kids from 0 to 5 years, can enjoy singing, dancing, instrument play with songs, rhymes and movement activities with a Music2Grow Family Music Session.

Even the roof of the library has some fun with a jumping castle and a great spot to take a break and catch the views around town. Around the festival site you will also see the First Forever 5 book bike peddling the importance of talking, playing, singing and reading to young children and in the Community Stall Area you will find a Library Pop-Up Book Shop and meet some of the talented wordsmiths that live in our local area. ANZAC spirit shines at Cooroy Dawn rose over Cooroy on 25 April and hundreds of people gathered at Cooroy Memorial Park for a very moving Dawn Service. The commemorative march and service at mid-morning were also a wonderful tribute to those who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peace keeping operations. Congratulations to the Cooroy Pomona RSL Subbranch who did a fantastic job of organising the services and march. This dedicated group of volunteers are to be applauded for not just the wonderful work they do on ANZAC Day but for the work throughout the year that they do for our community. Congratulations to the Cooroy RSL staff who volunteered their time for the gunfire breakfast which was a wonderful repast that included products provided by local businesses and was served to around 300 people. The morale in the club and around town was wonderful and the true ANZAC spirit could be seen with mateship and good humour mixed with respect and honour for our service men and women. Thanks also to organisers of the service which was held at newly restored Pomona War Memorial, the first in Pomona for 50 years.

This year, I’m launching the ‘Nicklin Community Awards’ which will be held during National Volunteer Week 20-26 May and I want you to nominate your local community hero! Having worked for 17 years as Sergeant in charge of the Police Youth Club, a community organisation, I know how invaluable volunteers are in our community. Coaches, canteen workers, grounds keepers, line markers, volunteer emergency workers and committee members all play a vital role in ensuring our community organisations are able to deliver the wonderful services that we rely on. The theme for National Volunteers Week this year is ‘Making a world of difference’. These are the people who coach your kids, who go out in the worst storms or fires to assist, who give up their time to ensure others are cared for, they truly do make a world of difference in our community. I want to encourage organisations to nominate their volunteers for special recognition. Cooroy Community Bank welcomes Sheridan to the fold

The Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has welcomed a new member to its Maple Street team, with Sheridan Gallaway now on board. The 21-year-old is delighted to be working in town, having accepted the position from her home in Dimbulah in Far North Queensland, having previously worked at the Community Bank branch there.

Page 6 - Cooroy Rag, May 8, 2019

Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Simone Flavelle said Sheridan has been a welcome addition to the team. “Sheridan brings with her a strong understanding of our community banking message and we’re thrilled to add such a dynamic young woman to town. We look forward to seeing Sheridan’s skill set in action as she works closely with our local customers and businesses. “As always with the community bank model, the more the community supports the Cooroy branch the more we can make more vital returns to our community,” Simone said. For her part, Sheridan said she’s looking forward to being part of the many community activities the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches are involved with. “I’m thrilled to be working in a branch that gives so much back to its community. Cooroy is a bit bigger than Dimbulah, but I’m fitting right in. Simone, Debbie, Karl, Jo, Amanda and Meredith have been really welcoming and I’m really enjoying getting to know our customers and some other locals as I make my way around town and to community functions,” Sheridan said. “Having already worked in a Community Bank branch, I’ve have seen the difference we make where it matters most – right here where we live. The more support we get here, the more we can give back to the hinterland. That’s our message and it’s that simple,” she added. Locals are invited to visit the Cooroy Community Bank branch and meet with Sheridan and the rest of the team to talk about all your banking needs. “Everyone has to bank somewhere, so why not bank where we have a say in Cooroy’s future simply by doing our banking,” Sheridan concluded. The Cooroy Community Bank branch is located at 36 Maple Street and is open 9.00am to 5.00pm

Accounts Simone Flavelle, Senior Branch Manager, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Every business has a transactional bank account, but have you got the right one? 1. Do you have specific legislative requirements to consider? This relates to your business and financial structure. For example, Real-Estate Agents and Solicitors are required to have trust accounts to handle deposits on property sales and so forth. Not-for-profit or volunteer organisations may also have particularly requirements in relation to their financial management and bank accounts. 2. How do your staff and suppliers want to be paid? Increasingly, staff and suppliers want to be paid directly into their bank accounts. If this is the case for you, you may need to ensure that your main transaction account includes this facility. In some industries, cash is still king. 3. How do your customers pay you? This varies enormously across industries. For some retailers it will be primarily a mix of cash, EFTPOS and credit cards. For business-to-business suppliers it might be primarily direct debit and cheques. 4. Do you need to link to other accounts? In this day and age many businesses have multiple accounts, investment accounts, loan accounts, credit cards, partner accounts and so forth. In the case of an owner-operator it may also include personal accounts, home-loan and so forth. 5. Do you require multiple signatures/ approval? This is a very important issue if your

business has multiple owners or if staff have been delegated a certain amount of authority over the accounting and banking function. 6. What are your reporting requirements? For some businesses the monthly statement in the mail is enough. For other businesses day by day transactional details are required, along with an instant balance. 7. Talk to your Branch Manager There is always more than one way to set up your banking. If you know what it is you want from us, then we are confident that we have the range of banking products and options to meet your requirements. To talk more about your personal or business accounts or any other banking matter, please call into the Cooroy or Pomona branch or call me on 5447 7131 or 5485 1786. You can also email me at simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

news

Great news, Cooroy - Envirobank is now cashing in your containers!

Sandy Bolton MP checked out the new recycling depot at Johnson Court, Cooroy

A brand-new container depot has opened for business in Cooroy at 5 Johnson Court. Meet the Envirobank team and return your containers, open Mon-Fri 8am to 4pm and Sat 8am to 2pm. Most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150ml and three litres are eligible for a refund when returned to a container refund point. To be eligible the beverage container must: • Have contained a beverage product that is not excluded from the scheme. For example, cordials and plain milk are not included in the scheme so containers that have held these products are not eligible for a refund

• Display the refund mark. This is so that the container refund point operator can see if the container is part of the scheme. Most containers will already have a refund mark for SA and NT and these containers are eligible under Containers for Change. Beverage manufacturers have until 1 December 2019 to display the new refund mark on their containers • Be an approved container. Some containers are made out of materials that cannot be recycled. These containers may not be approved (by the Queensland Government) as an eligible container as the scheme requires that when a refund is paid on a container that container must be recycled. There are some beverage containers that are not eligible for a refund. Generally excluded containers are those that are less than 150ml and greater than three litres. Other excluded containers include: • Any plain milk containers • Any glass containers which have contained wine or pure spirits • Containers 1L or more which have contained flavoured milk, pure fruit or vegetable juice, cask wine or cask water • Concentrated/undiluted cordial or syrup containers • Sachets above 250ml which have contained wine • Registered health tonics Excluded containers, such as plain milk bottles and glass wine bottles, can still be recycled through existing kerbside collection. ·

news Noosa Hinterland gets two new bridges under Federal funding

COOROY RAG

Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington has welcomed the announcement of more than $1 million in Federal Government funding to replace two Noosa Hinterland bridges. The Tablelands Road bridge in Cooran and the Wahpunga Lane bridge in Kin Kin will both be replaced, made possible through grant funding from the Federal Government’s Bridges Renewal Program. The Federal funding will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Noosa Council. “This is a great investment in infrastructure for the Noosa Hinterland region, as these bridges have reached the end of their lifecycle.” Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said. “The Wahpunga Lane bridge was built back in 1946 and has served the community well over the last seventy-three years but certainly needs replacing. “These two bridges were considered a high

priority based on our condition assessment. “They will now undergo replacement, with a twelve-month planning, design and procurement process starting in the new financial year, with construction due to start in the following financial year.” The Tablelands Road bridge in Cooran was given Federal funding of $477,288. The Wahpunga Lane bridge in Kin Kin received funding of $763,661. “These grants are a huge win for the Noosa region and the hinterland in particular. Council will continue to seek funding for local bridges through the government’s Bridges Renewal Program.” Both bridges are currently constructed of timber and will be fully removed and replaced by concrete structures. The project is expected to take about two years to complete.

TAFE site purchase is finally on track Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington has welcomed confirmation the State Government had finally accepted Council’s $1.7M offer, made late last year, to buy the former TAFE property at Tewantin. “Staff can now begin negotiating with the State Government over purchase conditions. We look forward to taking possession of the 11-hectare property once settlement occurs in a few months’ time,” he said. Council is yet to decide on the site’s long-term future. The Mayor said any potential use would need to show community benefit and not come at an additional cost to Noosa ratepayers. “There’ll be a detailed investigation of options for the use of the site which will be brought back to Council,” he said. “We have received a great many suggestions from residents: everything from a research centre to affordable housing. But in

the end, whether we on-sell the site, subdivide it to preserve the critical habitat, or develop the site ourselves, the outcome cannot be an ongoing drain on finances. It has to pay its way.” The Mayor said a significant portion of the site was home to endangered vegetation, plus koala, black-cockatoo and wallum rocketfrog habitat. “Ensuring this critical regional ecosystem is protected will of course be a top priority. That also means that the building footprint is unlikely to be enlarged.” The Mayor said independent valuations confirmed Council was getting good value for the agreed price, given the land’s size, location and environmental significance. “We will be garnering expert advice to help us determine a use for the facility that ensures both ratepayer and community benefit.”

Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre is currently showing an exhibition to commemorate and celebrate the 40th year of the Eumundi Markets in its arts space. The Heritage Centre has an extensive collection of objects, photographs and documents relating to the history of the Eumundi Markets and has used these resources to create a glimpse into the past of what has become a world famous market. Many of the photos and information in this heritage collection go right back to the beginning of the market which is recorded as starting on Saturday 24 March 1979 in and around the Eumundi CWA hall with only three stalls and 8 visitors (not counting stallholders family members). It has now grown to have an annual visitation estimated at 1.2million. The exhibition ‘the first 40 years’ has been ex-

tended until Saturday 15 June Using images of the markets from the 1980’s and 90’s, photographs have been recently taken by Leo Wiles in the same locations and are displayed together to show the ‘Then and Now’ of the market and how the market and the some of the Eumundi streetscape has changed over the years. An old wooden trestle table complete with a striped beach umbrella has been used to create the feel of a market stall circa 1980’s, complete with some objects from the heritage collection which were made by stallholders in the 1980’s through to today. Discover Eumundi thanks the Sunshine Coast Council for heritage levy grant funding received to assist in creating this exhibition and capturing the market memories to celebrate this milestone year.

Council sounds warning on illegal dumping Dump rubbish illegally and expect a fine, Noosa Council has warned. Council has investigated more than 260 reports of illegal rubbish dumping and more than 30 cases of illegally dumped vegetation in the past eight months. “For small amounts of rubbish, where there is a lack of evidence to help identify the culprit, Council is left to clean up the mess,” says Waste Coordinator Ian Florence. “But with larger amounts of dumped rubbish, we certainly pursue all possible avenues to track down those responsible,” he said. “Recently we’ve issued five show cause notices, eight clean-up notices, plus penalty infringement notices amounting to more than $8500. “Dealing with illegal dumping costs ratepayers. For example, where the amount of dumped waste is significant, we have to call in civil works staff with machinery to remove it before we can attempt to remediate the site and deal with any

contamination that may have occurred.” Council uses various tools to catch offenders. These include patrols of known hotspots, following up leads from the public, and the use of carefully placed cameras. “We have a good track record of catching those people who choose to use our natural areas as their personal rubbish dump,” Mr Florence said. “The cost of doing the right thing and taking your rubbish to the tip is far cheaper than copping a fine for illegal dumping, particularly as fines can run into the thousands of dollars. Ironically, many of the items dumped in bushland – such as whitegoods – can actually be recycled for free at Council’s Resource Recovery Centre,” Mr Florence said. For more information about recycling and resource recovery centre locations, visit www.noosa.qld.gov.au/landfillresource-recovery

It can be a lonely business for women The number of people working from home is on the increase, and even though this new-found freedom comes with many advantages, studies show there is a downside that many are not prepared for. Loneliness. And the affect on women, in particular, is taking its toll. According to a number of international studies, working from home can intensify existing work and family conflict, and result in social isolation. Because women tend to be connectors, without the presence of co-workers, they have no-one with whom to gauge their work performance resulting in lowered self esteem. In addition to this, they can get caught up doing family chores and commitments while working a full day, leaving them with a poor work-life balance. With noone to discuss this with, and deadlines still to meet, they can end up feeling very isolated.

Life Beyond 30 Business is about celebrating each other’s wins, tackling each other’s business problems, but first and foremost it’s about building friendships with other women in business. Run by Dianne Harkins, who has an extensive business background, the group meets every month on a Tuesday night at Saw & Mill. Each month there is a speaker and the topic is based on what skills the members need to help them in their business. So far topics covered have been tax obligations, Website Copy and the next event is about Profit & Loss. Groups are kept small, usually no more than 20-30, so that members build friendships The next event is at 5pm at the Saw & Mill on the 14th of May. Contact Karen or Katie at info@lifebeyond30.com.au or visit lifebeyond30.com.au for more information.

How to care for wounds

All of us will experience some type of wound in our lives. Whilst many require professional medical assessment and treatment, it is important to know some basic “at-home self-care” tips for you to help care for these wounds and prevent further wounds. When a wound first occurs, be sure to: • Wash the hands with clean water – don’t forget in between the fingers! • Stop any bleeding with some clean paper towel • Rinse the wound with clean water once it stops bleeding – no need for chemicals or soaps • Use a clean a clean, moist cloth to remove dirt Some other important tips: • Covering the wound is the next important step to ensure we are maintaining an environment suitable for healing. Do not leave the wound open and exposed, as this will interfere with healing.

• Remember to have a clean environment and clean hands when you need to change dressings on your wound • Used pain relieving medicines recommended by your pharmacist/doctor. • Don’t forget to eat properly, to fuel your healing process – foods rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, copper and zinc may be helpful. • Be sure to manage underlying conditions that may affect your healing time; e.g. diabetes • Exercise regularly to increase blood flow and speed wound healing • Do not smoke! When should you seek further medical assistance? If you experience: • Prolonged bleeding • Pus/discharge from the wound • Fever • Increasing pain Visit your LiveLife Pharmacist for more information.

health Support for families being impacted by drug and alcohol problems Supporting a family member with a drug or alcohol problem is challenging. Many people are unsure about how to respond to a person’s drug or alcohol use, as well as how to manage its impact on other family members. Lives Lived Well will host a free information session on Thursday May 9 from 11am to 1pm at Pomona Community House for people who are concerned about a family member’s substance use. The session is being delivered by professional counsellors through the Breakthrough for Families program. The two-hour session covers a range of topics – from understanding substance use and its impact on physical and mental health, through to practical strategies for supporting a loved one, reducing the risk or overdose or relapse, and connecting family members to other support services. The sessions provide a safe space for families to talk about their concerns and learn more about self-care. “A big part of supporting families is teaching

them self-care,” said Jessica Lien, the Breakthrough for Families Program Coordinator. “We provide information that not only informs and educates people, but also makes them feel safer and teaches them what they don’t have to accept,” she said. “The education sessions aim to empower family members to make positive decisions as individuals and as part of a family unit. Our sessions are a safe environment for family members to ask questions, allay concerns, build a plan and move forward with renewed confidence. “Our counsellors are also available for one-onone sessions with families and individuals, which suits people if they prefer to talk about their situation privately.” Breakthrough for Families is run by not-for-profit organisation Lives Lived Well and is funded by the Queensland Government. Look after your body - it’s your first and last home

. One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is self-care. More than a gesture or a matter-of-fact routine it is a powerful measure of self-worth - an acknowledgement that you matter to you and that you are worthy of care and nurturing. When you choose to strengthen this self-care muscle it sets up a ripple effect – a vibrational pattern that attracts more nurturing and support into all areas of your life. Maple St Acupuncture has a hand-picked team of talented ‘masters of wellbeing’ to guide you on how best to support your unique constitution. Our therapists have learned to observe the nuances of the body over many years. They are each equipped with a profound understanding of how to restore balance, strength, vitality and optimal health to your body and this has the knock-on effect of improving your state of mind and general quality of life. Rather than treating a particular ‘disease’ state in isolation our team at Maple St aim to return you to a state of whole-body health, so that your immune system stays strong and so that your body can rise to life’s challenges with ease and greater resilience. Way before you experience major symptoms of disease your body tells you when it is out of balance and needs

attention. Signs of imbalance include waking up in the morning with no energy, experiencing disturbed sleep, body stiffness and pain, digestive bloating, cramping, reflux, bad breath, brain fog, memory loss, mood swings, irregular bowel movements, headaches and migraines, a lack of motivation and more. Ask us about the benefits of acupuncture to strengthen and tonify organs and to maximise the flow and abundance of vital energy (chi). Ask us how osteopathy works to restore natural alignment in the body through anatomical and connective tissue manipulation to release tension, improve whole system communication, remove pain and increase mobility. Ask us how massage can help you to detox the skin and organs, improve biofeedback, increase range of movement and relieve muscle tension. When all of your organs are working in harmony and your body is supple and aligned you experience greater clarity of mind, deeper rest, deeper breathing, greater digestive efficiency and a fortified immune system. Don’t wait until you are unwell. Choose a proactive approach to your health and give your ‘first home’ the nourishment and respect that it deserves! It is estimated that there are more than 430,000 Australians living with dementia. Dementia Australia expects this number to increase to almost 600,000 by 2028 with an estimated 318 people newly diagnosed with dementia every day by 2025. The 2016 census found dementia the leading cause of death for Australian women. In 2018 NoosaCare’s DementiaLiving team put a call out to the Noosa community to create a Dementia Friendly Community Advisory Board to address this pressing community issue and prepare our community to meet the needs of people with dementia and be part of the dementia friendly movement across Australia. NoosaCare’s Dementia Friendly Community Advisory Board is comprised of people living with dementia, their loved ones, medical professionals, volunteers and several community leaders including Sandy Bolton MP and Cr Ingrid Jackson. Last Tuesday the board launched their first project, a Dementia Friendly Memory Support Pack which provides vital information for people newly diagnosed with dementia and for their families. It includes a handy checklist and a comprehensive list of local and national contact points to help people with their dementia journey. The goal of the advisory board is to develop a model of meaningful engagement between people with dementia, their families and the local community. The Memory Support Pack is a foundation for wider implementation aimed at establishing Noosa

as a dementia friendly community. Cr Jackson said, “A diagnosis of dementia can be overwhelming and anything we can do to help people living with dementia and their families is a priority for the advisory board. The board’s vision for the support pack is to make it easier for community members to access the information and services they need at a stressful and emotional time.” Sandy Bolton, Member for Noosa, expressed her thanks to the Board, and their diligent efforts to establish a pathway forward. “This is an important first stage in ensuring that Noosa becomes an ‘ageing’ friendly community, encompassing understanding and compassion, as well the culture and infrastructure that does not isolate those of us who are experiencing memory loss, or their loved ones and carers.” “It is up to all of us to take a moment, slow down, and empathise with those around us. It is especially important for anyone working in service industries, including retail and hospitality, to re-interpret what may be seen as a ‘difficult’ customer, to one that is experiencing frustration, anger and confusion as a result of a condition that can affect any single one of us, or someone we love dearly” she said The support pack is available online on NoosaCare website (https:// noosacare.com.au/dementia-care/) and through medical clinics that are making copies available to their patients.

Little Hearts, Big Surprises!

As part of our Vacation Care Program, the children of the Kindness Club and Cooroy Outside School Hours Care embarked on a Kindness Excursion in Cooroy on Wednesday 17th April. The excursion comprised of a variety of kindness missions including: presenting people with gift bags prepared by the children, handmade scented paper roses, free coffee vouchers

from Jamaica Blue Cooroy (thanks Nick!), handmade bookmarks for the library, placing positive messages inside library books to be found at a later date, hiding Cooroy Kindness Rocks around the playground, and a free lucky dip for children. All accompanied with BIG, BIG smiles! The purpose of our excursion was to spread kindness and to teach the children how a sim-

ple act of kindness can change someone’s day. The children’s gifts were often greeted with surprise, and always with kind words. The children were absolutely delighted by the warm responses they received from our wonderful community members and visitors to Cooroy. In Kindness Club member Maddie’s words “I liked seeing everybody smile and

hearing about the kind things they have experienced. Doing kind things made me feel really happy because I got to see other people smile too” Davii shared one of her highlights of our excursion “A nice man, who we gave a rose to, said that he was a truck driver and that he would put the rose near the window in his truck. He said every time he looked at it he would think of us” The children were in very high spirits after a morning of kind deeds and encouraged to continue finding ways to bring joy to others. Thank you to everyone we met on our kindness excursion! Your warmth and messages of kindness help us teach the children that little hearts really can make a big difference! As always, we would love to hear about your experiences with kindness (names optional). Email - thekindnessclub @outllook.com or send your stories to The Kindness Club c/- P.O Box 816, Cooroy.

Say goodbye to paper Certificates of Title Historically, a Certificate of Title was a document which provided written evidence of a person’s right to ownership of a property. In 1994, the Titles Office became “electronic” and a “CT” no longer automatically issued but could be provided on application for one. In an effort to push towards an electronic conveyancing system, from 1 October 2019, hard copy CT’s will be redundant. On March 26, 2019, the Queensland Government passed an amendment to The Land Title Act 1994 (QLD) which will see the electronic title maintained by the Titles Registry as the only record of ownership. There will be no requirement to lodge existing paper certificates to the Titles Office during a property transaction. What if I have a paper Certificate of Title? Keep it somewhere safe until 1 October 2019

until the changes take place. After that you can do what you like with it and many people may keep them for sentimental reasons. If a law firm holds your CT in their safe custody please be assured that it will remain there until you request otherwise (or the property is sold by you). Another impact of the amendment will be for some transactions where the paper CT’s were held as security (as there could be no dealing registered on title without it). This was sometimes the case where it was used as security for repayment of loans rather than register a mortgage. In future this will no longer be sufficient to secure repayment under the loan as the title can be dealt with without the need for production of the CT. If you would like further advice regarding these changes, please call the team at SPM Law on 5440 4800.

Gymnasts from all over Queensland traveled to Brisbane to compete at the Queensland Senior State Championships. The event was held at the Chandler Stadium where gymnasts chased state titles and selection to the Australian Championships to be held in Melbourne during May. This year the Cooroy Gymnastics Club sent a team of 4 gymnasts, one level 7 and three level 8 competitors. The boys who train between 18 and 20 hours per week, balance school and their love of the sport pushing themselves for selection to the National Championships. Flynn McKeown represented Cooroy in the level 7 division in his first senior state competition. Despite his lack of senior competition experience, Flynn did well finishing 10th in the all around competition. In the second day of competition, whilst not finishing on the podium he was able to place 6th on both floor and parallel bars.

The level 8 gymnasts pushed themselves, adding a high degree of difficulty to their routines to gain maximum returns from the judges. Walking a fine line between higher rewards for difficulty and losing marks for errors, the boys posted some great scores. Despite some falls, especially on the technical pommel horse, Cooroy was able to finish 1st and 3rd on the first day in the prestigious all around competition. Day two saw more great results for the boys with two more state titles on apparatus and 3 other podium finishes in the finals. Results: Finlay Jones 1st All Around, 1st Rings, 1st Parallel Bars, 2nd Floor, 2nd Vault; Dean Chandler 3rd All Around; Lyam Chandler 3rd Floor. Both Dean and Finlay have been selected to travel to Melbourne to represent Queensland at the Australian Championships in three weeks time. Both gymnasts will be working with coach Jeff to try and improve their routines and fitness.

Cutters Corner Round 5 saw the boys make the trek to Beachmere to play the Stags from Mary Valley. In a first half which showed the under strength Cutters aren’t too far off the pace just a single try seperated the teams with Mary Valley up 10-6. A try to Gary Holder which was converted by Austin Coleman accounted for the Cutters pointed. During the 1st half a serious season ending knee injury to captain Grant Adams put a dampener on things. Everyone from the club wishes him all the best considering his history with knee injuries. Two quick tries after half time to Jim Johnstone & Jeff Bickford saw the score go to 14-10 but the stags replied with three converted tries in seven minutes to see them go to a 28-14 lead. Two consolidation tries at the death to Jim Johnstone & Nathan Roon took the score to 32-22. Kyle Jones took the 3 votes, Jim Johnstone 2 & Gary Holder 1. After a week off a grand final rematch against Beachmere at Palmwoods faced the Cutters. Again injuries & being short of numbers made the going tough but that didn’t stop Ricky Brown scoring in the first set of the game. Three tries before halftime to

Beachmere saw the score 18-6 to them at halftime. Not much went the Cutters way in the 2nd half with players going down injured. Beachmere were victorious 38-6 in a hard fought game. Brock Mavin was outstanding, Luke Martin & the ever green Des McLeary were the best for the Cutters. Special mention goes to Liam “baby face” Cobb who was outstanding on the wing. Round 7 sees footy return to Cooran with the three division 2b games bring okayed there. Kick off for the games are 12.30pm, 2.00pm with the Cutters vs Yandina game at 3.30pm. This home game in the annual Arlo Crawford-Window memorial game. All volunteers are welcome. The Cutters Country Kitchen is open every Friday night. Check out the Facebook at www.facebook.com/cutterscountrykitchen for the weekly specials For all game times & news check out www.facebook.com/officialpomona coorancutters. U6s: The Easter break did not dull the spirit and determination of the mighty under 6s. Their passing and defence was first class against a well drilled Grammar team. The ground was very wet underfoot which meant passing had to be precise and all team members had fun running round and getting muddy. Player of the match went to Henry for an all-round performance. U7s: The U7s played their first game of the proper season on a slippery field against Grammar on Saturday. The team went really well, showing variation on at-

www.cooroyrag.com.au

tack and real commitment on defence. Zach Eaton opened the scoring from the start with a quick try and then continued to lead through his defensive efforts for the remainder of the game producing a best and fairest display. Maya, Tristan and CJ also contributed well throughout the game, coping well with the wet conditions with some good passing and support play. Special thanks to Henry and Owen who added some real ability in defense, making great touches and saving trys. Well done U7’s and looking forward to next week.

Thirteen year old pocket rocket, Caitlyn Taylor, is a local karate athlete who is dedicated to her training and schooling and somehow works it all together to smash her goals. Recently selected to be a part of the Australian Squad team she is now up for selection for the Oceania Pacific Cup in mid August in Noumea Caledonia and recently was selected as representative of the QLD state team to compete at the Australian Nationals starting in August in Tasmania
