Pasture dieback a real threat to beef industry

Kevin Richardson has had to sell off most of his stock because of pasture dieback on his property PADDOCKS on the Sunshine Coast are dying and no-one knows why. Third-generation cattle farmer, Kevin Richardson, says pasture dieback has affected 90 percent of his 255 acre property in Belli Creek Road and there’s nothing stopping it because currently no-one knows what’s causing it or how it’s spreading. Pasture dieback kills pasture. Although dieback has been reported since the early 1990s in Central Queensland, its occurrence has accelerated in recent years. It has the potential to devastate Australia’s cattle industry and now it’s here on the Sunshine Coast. The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and Meat & Livestock Australia are working with producers to try and better understand the problem. Known grass species affected include Buffel, Creeping bluegrass, Sabi grass, Pangola, Paspalum, Signal and Para grass, Setaria, Rhodes Panics and native pastures such as black spear-grass, forest blue-grass and Golden beard grass. It affects a range of soil types, landscape locations (ridges, gullies, gentle and steep slopes) and turns lush pastures into paddocks of weeds. Mr Richardson said that dieback has spread rapidly on his property over the last 12 months. “On Christmas Day 2017 after that storm and the humidity it generated I could look out and see acre by acre dying before my eyes. The grass goes from green to a bright red colour and then brown.”

Mr Richardson has been forced to sell his stock as it’s not financially viable to hand feed. “If this isn’t controlled soon Australia’s not going to have a beef industry left,” said Mr Richardson. “There’s thousands and thousands of hectares already affected and so far no one has any answers for us. “And the flow on affect to other industries will be far reaching including carriers, suppliers, farm machinery business and ultimately the consumer.” Owners of lifestyle properties are also being impacted. Until this year Ian Wright’s five-acre property, also on Cooroy Belli Creek Road, was lush and green. Now his gently sloping block is overrun with broad leaf weeds, cobblers pegs and camphor laurel. “The more rain we have the worse it gets,” said Mr Wright. To date research has proved inconclusive in identifying the cause of the condition. Management solutions such as burning, fertilising, re-seeding, spraying on a range of pasture registered chemical or biological formations and changing grazing management, has proven ineffective. If you are concerned about pasture dieback please call DAF on 13 25 23, or visit your local DAF office to talk to a DAF representative. Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) are asking affected graziers to fill out an online survey to report the occurrence of dieback. You can contact MLA via their website on www.mla.com.au

Muir’s Musings I came across this rather apt quote attributed to Albert Einstein in a congressional record: “I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but I do know that World War IV will be fought with rocks.” It is rather interesting and frightening to postulate how future wars will play out, as perpetual war and international conflict are inevitable. Sadly, warfare is the fabric of human existence. I don’t think this is necessarily a defeatist worldview, but perhaps, simply that of a realist.

One of the worst things ever said to a teacher is: “Oh, you’re just a teacher. You have such a cushy job working from 8:30am to 3pm.” It takes much self control to smile politely and just roll the eyes. Such ignorant comments come from people who are obviously not teachers and those who have little to do with professionals working in education. Teaching is certainly far more time demanding than the hours of 8:30am to 3pm. Most teachers arrive at school to prepare for the day at 7:30am. With parent phone calls, interviews, faculty meetings, professional development, planning and preparation undertaken after school, leaving work at 5pm, or much later, is not uncommon. Teachers

often arrive home from work tired and emotionally spent, especially after dealing with hormonal adolescents for much of the day. Weekends and the school holidays are spent planning and preparing lessons and writing assessment. Lessons and assessment don’t just magically happen, as many students (and others) assume. Ensuring that activities are differentiated for a variety of learning abilities and styles takes meticulous work. Marking and drafting assessment is very time consuming and this is usually taken home and completed by teachers after hours. Questions regarding homework and assessment and the school program can come in via email from students and parents 24/7 and work correspondence does not stop on the weekend or during school holidays. Teachers spend a lot of their time outside of school thinking about and worrying about their students. It is a profession that attracts empathic personalities, and it is an impossible task for teachers to switch off and completely forget about their students, as they are the reason why teachers are drawn to the profession. It is often a thankless, time consuming and very misunderstood job; but teachers put in the time, passion and effort, certainly not for the money or accolades; but for enriching and improving the lives of others.

Are people too lazy to use correct capitalisation and punctuation where required or were they never taught how to do so effectively in primary school? Is texting to blame? Are people reading less or reading poor quality works? Will English evolve with the times, subsequently, resulting in capitalisation and punctuation considered as trivial and redundant?

As numbers have shown evidence of declining in our area, we are nearly thinking about planting some small crops again and hopefully our dam will start to become more of the ecosystem it used to be. Which means that the water lilies will start to grow back and the native fish and aquatic creatures will again have a place to breed and create food for the local wildlife, as a starter. news Is your insurance up to date?

COOROY RAG

Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank INSURANCE. It remains one of the hottest topics at workplaces and around coast dinner tables. Whatever your current situation, it’s time to take stock – particularly your home and what is likely your second most valuable material asset, your car. As we have witnessed over the past summer, the power of Mother Nature can be unleashed no matter what the weather conditions. Fire, storms and flood had a lot of Queenslanders checking insurance policies to check that we’re covered for the unthinkable. The danger in all this is to become complacent about insurance and ignore the signs of protecting yourself, your business, your car and home. This continues to leave many coast residents jaded and wary of what their insurance covers them for and perhaps apprehensive about taking out policies for themselves of their business. Now, more than ever, it’s time to remember there is more to an insurance policy than just having a cheap premium. If you have a current policy, make sure you do take those extra few minutes to check what you’re covered for, and if in any way it’s unclear to you, call and ask for clarification on anything you’re unsure of. It would seem there has never been a better time for us all to think about how we can better protect our own assets. It’s also important to make sure we have a quality product and the sum insured is sufficient to replace any loss. If new items have been purchased for the home

or business such as furniture or electrical items, remember to increase the contents amount. Don’t forget all the fixed items that are classed as buildings, especially if you have recently completed improvements or renovations. Special valuables may need to be listed individually and a valuation held as evidence. It is also recommended to keep photos of your special items. So take time out to spend just a few minutes checking your insurance policies or look into purchasing one. If you would like to discuss anything to do with your personal insurance needs or those for your home or business please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au. Mumpreneurs networking meeting CASEY Hart has started a Mumpreneurs Network, a monthly networking evening, where business women can come together to share information, learn, support, encourage and empower each other. “Over and over again I see women, especially mums in business, who are struggling with different areas of their business; from establishing contacts, managing, building their clientele and marketing and almost every other area in between,” says Casey. “How do I know this … because I was in that exact same boat! “I really felt the need for a network of women that could learn from each other, call upon and engage with what was going to support and empower other women just like me. “I understood how challenging and isolating it can be to start from the ground up and the internet can be so overwhelming nowadays you don’t know where to get your info from.” Casey anticipates that the Mumpreneurs monthly networking nights will go a long way in helping women build and strengthen themselves, each other, and their business. “This networking group is for women and mums in business so I want it to be built around what they need and want that will support them as best

news The top 10 lifestyle costs draining Aussies of cash

COOROY RAG

COOROORA SCREENS & BLINDS

Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* Six out of the top ten categories relate to just two things. Can you guess what they are, and could you be cutting back? As a nation, Australians aged 18 and over spent approximately $145 billion on lifestyle costs last year, with the average spend per person around $7,800, according to research by comparison site Mozo1. While clothing and footwear took out the number one spot by a country mile on the top-ten list for lifestyle expenditure, six out of ten categories related to just two things - eating and drinking out. Below we list the lifestyle costs that made up the top10 list and some possible ways you could cut back in these areas without cutting back on life. Below is what Aussies spent collectively on various lifestyle categories during 2017: 1. Clothing and shoes $21.5 billion 2. Restaurant dinners $11.7 billion 3. Cigarettes - $10.7 billion 4. Takeaway dinners $10.6 billion 5. Weekend brunch outings - $7.4 billion 6. Gambling and lotteries

- $6.7 billion 7. Buying lunch at work - $6.4 billion 8. Buying coffee out $5.9 billion 9. Drinks at the bar $5.8 billion 10. Sportswear / sports equipment - $5.5 billion. Ways to cut back on spending If the categories in the top-10 do sound a little too familiar, and you are looking at ways to make your money go further, the good news is you don’t have to cut these things out completely to reduce you’re spending. Below are some suggestions. Clothing and shoes Consider writing down what you’re after before you go shopping to avoid buying things you don’t need, or rent or raid a good mate’s closet if you have an event but don’t want to wear something you’ve worn before. Even buying one less item a month (at $100) could save you $1,200 a year. Restaurant dinners - Depending on how many courses you’re having and what selections you’re making from the drinks menu, opting to eat at home occasionally won’t ruin your social life. Tak-

ing turns to host dinner parties with friends could reduce everyone’s costs, as could everyone bringing their favourite dish. Cigarettes - Whether you’re a heavy smoker or count yourself more of a social one, reducing your intake by even a packet a week (assuming a packet is around $35) could put over $1,800 a year back in your pocket, not to mention the potential health benefits. Takeaway dinners - Say you get takeout three or four times a week and spend roughly $30 each time. If you swapped just two of those takeaway meals with something you could cook at home for say $10 a meal – that’d be a saving of $40 a week, which is just over $2,000 annually. Weekend brunch outings - Whether you’re ordering smashed avo or you’re more of the bacon-andeggs type, add a coffee, and you’re probably paying around $20 per brunch. As an alternative, opting for a picnic basket filled with $5 worth of stuff you have at home and hitting the park twice a month could save you $360 a year. Gambling and lotteries -

Whether you buy the odd lottery ticket or have the occasional flutter on the pokies, making this a less frequent event or setting yourself a limit could put money back in your pocket. Meanwhile if it’s going from a recreational to regular activity and you need help, call the Gambling Helpline on 1800 858 858. Buying lunch at work The convenience of it may be a wonderful thing, but if you’re forking out $10 Monday through Friday, keep in mind that bringing something from home (for say $4 a portion) could save you nearly $1,500 a year. Even if you make lunch one week and buy it the next, you could be putting away $750 a year. Buying coffee out - The barista might make a better coffee than you can, but giving up five takeaway coffees a week could save you around $1,000 a year. And, if the instant coffee you make is really that bad, even cutting back on one or two takeaways a week could save you more than $400 over 12 months. Drinks at the bar - If your drink of choice costs around $7 – cutting out just three drinks a week could

save you over $1,000 a year. Another idea is to check out what deals are on as you might be able to get a drink thrown in for free when purchasing your dinner. Apps like The Happiest Hour might provide ideas. Sportswear / sports equipment - If you’re forking out a lot here, you could consider a different type of fitness regime where you swap a new set of dumbbells or boxing gloves for a scenic walk or swim at the beach. Ditching an unused gym membership (which might be $40 a fortnight) could also save you $1,000 a year. When the carer needs some care MOST of you will know Clinton Stanley as World Down Syndrome Swimming Champion and local hero. You will of course also know his famous Mum Sue, who until recently has spent the past 26 years of her life committed to achieving great things for people with disabilities in sport. So committed was Sue that her tireless community volunteer work was recently recognised when she was awarded the Sunshine Coast Inspiring Women’s Award. For those of you who don’t know Chris, he is husband to Sue and dad to Clinton, also the guy who has mowed the grass for 29 years on their Black Mountain acreage property. He has been their rock, the quiet achiever and the one to keep everything together while Sue supported the community’s disabled athletes by way of endless fundraising, and while Clinton wowed us all with his fabulous achievements. But sometimes bad things happen to good people and Chris has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s which means the family can no longer stay in their beloved family home for much longer. With both Clinton and Chris needing care, Sue has had to make some choices. She has had to make the difficult decision to sell their family home to move into a care facility, Palm Lakes Resort in Cooroy. Mrs Stanley admits the house is “a little dated” and could do with a fresh coat of paint and new blinds and curtains before they list it for sale in a few weeks. Without public help, the family will be forced to dip into Mr Stanley’s superannuation to make the move. When real estate agent Kess Prior, of Hinternoosa, heard of Mrs Stanley’s situation, she decided the carer needed a carer. “It’s time someone did something for her,” Ms Prior said. Ms Prior said volunteers were already coming in mowing the lawn to help maintain the acreage property. “It’s time the tables are turned and we as a community give back to the Stanleys. Their current home needs some “tweaking” to be

THE Butter Factory Arts Centre in Cooroy cleared its commitments in May to fill its galleries with the works of internationally collected, local artist, Kaya Sulc, in his 88th year. ‘As Time Goes By’ opens to the public 6pm, Thursday May 10. BFAC co-ordinator, Alicia Sharples said the exhibition has been a labour of love to honour this astounding creative in his later years. “We’ve been working with Kaya and his NSW stockist, Steelreid, for the past few months to make this a show that honours his vision,” Ms Sharples said. “We’re incredibly humbled to present Kaya’s first show in Cooroy, despite him having lived here for the past 40 years … he’s exhibited across Australia and has works held internationally, but, in his own words … he just never got around to it!” “It’s incredibly rare to see the work of an artist, in one space, that spans such a long time. Kaya is also looking forward to seeing how it all presents when shown together – this isn’t something he’s done before.” ‘As Time Goes By’ is sixty works, created in the spirit of memories as copper sculptures, paintings and studio artefacts like wax maquettes. The first public viewing begins 6pm, Thursday May 10 and continues through until June 19. All welcome to opening night with a cash bar available.

Dream is Little Seed’s second foray into Shakespearean drama. It is also part of the upcoming Anywhere Theatre Festival, which transforms unconventional settings – from backyards and bookstores to cafés and Cooroy’s spectacular amphitheatre – into performance spaces. “Last year, Little Seed’s production of Romeo and Juliet was honoured with an award for being one of the outstanding experiences of the Anywhere Theatre Festival. This year, we are excited to bring one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays to life,” says Little Seed’s director, Johanna Wallace. The storyline of Shakespeare’s comedy, set in a forest, centres on two pairs of lovers who enter the kingdom of fairies. What ensues is a mix of hilarity, heartbreak and high romance. According to Ms Wallace, who will co-direct the play alongside Ilsa Wynne-Hoelscher Kidd, the production stars a cast of young local talent, including Madison Beaufort as Titania, Queen of the Fairies, Nathanial Knight as Oberon, King of the Fairies, and Jack Miller as Puck. Heather Groves, the production’s musical director, will present original and live music, while magnificent costumes, designed by Leona Seib and Sally Alexander, will capture the botanical theme. “This production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream has it all – magical performances from passionate young players, brilliant costumes and an amazing location. We can’t wait to share this production with the Sunshine Coast community,” Ms Wallace adds. A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be performed at the Cooroy Amphitheatre on 12, 13, 19 and 20 of May. Tickets can be purchased online: www.anywhere.is

A Night with ‘Adele’ @ The Majestic “A Night with ‘Adele’ – Starring Danielle Bell” will be playing at the Majestic Theatre in Pomona this Mother’s Day weekend, Friday 11th and Sat 12th May @7pm and Mother’s Day matinee Sun 13th May 2pm. Tix themajestictheatre.com.au Danielle Bell spent her childhood growing up in Cooroy. In fact, so did her parents, and grandparents! There is a very good chance you already know her family. You may have already been lucky enough to hear her sing around town at various Karaoke nights. You may already know she has won several singing competitions, and for good reason! If you didn’t know, let me be the first to introduce you. After graduating from Noosa District State High School, Danielle dedicated her time to helping others. Danielle’s kind-hearted nature led her to become a support worker for those with a disability. She has always been an incredible inspiration for those she works with and continues to be a beacon of

positivity to those around her. Her community involvement goes beyond her job. She is involved with numerous theatre and musical groups, all while raising her 2-year-old daughter, Isabella. Her commitment, dedication and tenacity have led her to headline her own show. Her likeness to Pop icon Adele, combined with her wonderful vocal ability, were the catalyst for Danielle to accept the role. “When I was approached to do the show, it was an easy decision for me. I feel honoured to be able to portray such a musical legend and I hope I can do her justice”.

More than a voice “MUSIC touches us emotionally where words alone can’t.” Who would have thought that Johnny Depp could be so eloquent? Music is something that has travelled with us since we came into being, but it is strong in some more so than others. With shows like ‘The Voice’ and ‘X-Factor’, you could be forgiven for thinking that an appearance on these programs could turn you into an ‘instant star’, but reality is often very different from fiction. Hard work and dedication to your creative endeavor is still needed to make you stand out from the crowd, and that’s where Cheryl Webb may be able to help. “I have been fortunate to have travelled through life with music as my constant companion, and I’m proud to say that I have worked with some of the best that music has to offer in some iconic venues and some not so. Still, the thrill of being part of a special musical team for an hour or so, far out ways any shortcomings that the venue might provide. “Trying to make music a career these days is a lot harder than it was when I was coming up through ‘the ranks’. Live television, jingles, studio work along with live venues meant that a musician could pay the rent without reverting to the ‘day gig’. “For those of you old enough to remember, ‘The

Graham Kennedy Show’ (out of Melbourne) was the premier show to watch AND to be on. It was there that I began my professional singing career backing the likes of Dionne Warwick, Sammy Davis Jnr and great Aussie acts like Colleen Hewitt, John Farnham and Kerrie Biddell. “With the move to Sydney, my career took on another form composing music for Television shows and writing and producing pop songs for Sony and BMG artists. I was also chosen as a segment composer for the 2000 Paralympics Opening Ceremony. “At one point I found myself being the lead singer of Australia’s most iconic vocal group, ‘The Seekers’. For six years we travelled the world performing those wonderful songs like ‘A World of Our Own’ and ‘Georgy Girl’. “Mike Walsh shows, Midday with Ray Martin and with Kerri-Anne, were shows that were not only fun to be involved in, but also where you got to work with some truly amazing artists. Olivia Newton-John, Tom Jones and Tina Arena come to mind: great artists and really genuine people. “Now that I live in the gorgeous Sunshine Coast hinterland my focus has returned to teaching piano and voice.” For singing lessons from beginners to advanced call Cheryl on 0417 164 294. Community celebrates hall re-opening

The Opening of The Cooroy Memorial Hall on Saturday April 21st by Mayor Tony Wellington was a huge success. Members of the community filled the Hall from wall to wall. Everyone was amazed at the work that had been done and were entertained all afternoon by various local performers and speakers.

Right: Betty Sivyer with Neil Dwyer. Betty said the hall was built the year she was born, and she celebrated her wedding reception there 71 years ago. Neil Dwyer’s father gave the couple 20 pounds as a wedding gift, and Betty still has the tea set she bought with it. Betty had brought with her a dish with a picture of the original Hall on it that she found in an antique shop in Brisbane. Though she didn’t know what year the dish was made she knows her Aunt and Uncle, who were married in Cooroy in 1927, had the same dish back then.

93 Year old Joan Goeldner with daughter Lyn Teagon. Joan’s Uncle, Robert McAnally, was a WW1 Veteran and the chairman of the Noosa Shire in the late 1930’s.

Harry Kirk, chief Builder, and Paul Kluck, Cooroy Hall Committee President, had huge smiles as well-deserved accolades came their way. It has been 2 ½ years since the Hall was forced to close its doors and the work both these men have done has been incredible. The sponsorships of all those who have donated their skills, time and money is appreciated by the whole of the Cooroy community. The Memorial Hall will be 100 years old in 2026 the committee is requesting the citizens of Cooroy to go through their old photographs and look for any that relates to the hall, whether it be school speech nights, dances, weddings, badminton, boxing or parties, anything, as we are trying to put together a photographic history along with a written one. Contact Amy on 5447 6473 so she can arrange for a copy to be made. Thank you one and all for your help and support.

Richared and Kathleen Sharrock celebrating 62 years of marriage this year, were both very happy with the reopening of the Hall and all the hard work that had been put into the renovations.

THE Cooroy Chamber of Commerce is hosting another of their popular networking nights on Thursday 31 May in the newly renovated Cooroy Memorial Hall. As part of the Queensland Government’s Small Business Week this event is also sponsored by Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. “Cooroy Chamber networking nights bring business owners, community organisation representatives and Cooroy community leaders together to network, socialise and get the latest news. We felt this was a perfect fit with Small Business Week,” said Chamber President, Danielle Taylor. “Thanks to the sponsorship of Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank it will be free to attend. Light nibbles will be provided and there will also be a cash bar available. Our networking nights are always very popular as they

intimate enough that you can really get to know people but big enough that you make some new connections. Past attendees have said they have developed new business relationships at these meetings and that they are a great way to get to know others in the community.” Queensland Small Business Week (QSBW) celebrates the vital contribution small business makes to Queensland’s vibrant economy. QSBW 2018 is presented by the Queensland Government and sponsored by Australia Post, Bendigo Bank and Vodafone. For the Cooroy Chamber Small Business Networking Night, you do need to reserve your spot, email your name and the organisation you are representing to admin@cooroy.com.au Date Claimer: Thursday 31 May 2018, 5.30pm at Cooroy Memorial Hall Cooroy Rag, May 9, 2018 - Page 15

Allergies: Beyond skin deep DO certain foods leave you bloated and headachy? Does your dog send you into a sneezing frenzy? Or do pollens and certain grasses leave your skin desperately itchy? If you answered yes, then you know this is a daily reality for you and the millions of people living with allergic conditions such as hay fever, asthma, food allergies and eczema. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. So why does your body react this way? Essentially, your body believes that these otherwise harmless substances (foods, animal hair and grasses) are threatening. Hence, when it comes into contact with these substances, known as allergens, your immune system releases large amounts of the chemical histamine. Histamine is like a burly bouncer outside a club:

its job is to muscle an allergen out of your body by any means necessary. Some of the ways histamine does this job is by producing redness and inflammation, a running nose, itchy eyes, constricted airways, bloating and diarrhoea; manifestations of allergic disease. Current approaches to allergy management centre on both allergen avoidance and reducing histamine (e.g. antihistamine medication). Truly holistic allergy management encompasses symptomatic relief while also retraining the body’s immune system to tolerate ‘threatening’ allergens. A holistic program incorporates carefully selected herbs and nutrients combined with tailored diet and lifestyle recommendations; to help repair your gut, improve your ability to tolerate allergens, and reduce your reactive symptoms. Certain herbal medicines provide antihistamine and

anti-inflammatory actions – key to providing you with symptomatic relief. Following a prescribed diet in conjunction with specialised supplementation greatly assists in reducing symptoms and building tolerance to allergens. Now is the time to address those irritating allergic symptoms by tackling the underlying causes. Identifying your triggers and completing an individualised program can help you gain control of your reactivity and increase your tolerance levels, leading to a reduction in symptoms. A Journey of Creative Healing MARY Atkins was a young mother of two small children when her husband was tragically killed in a light aircraft accident. Her body, already exhibiting signs that something was amiss, bore the brunt of this tragedy and at the age of 27 she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Mary Atkins boldly rejected treatment when doctors told her she would be wheelchair bound within months. Instead she acted upon a powerful intuitive message that prompted her to do something creative every day. It did not matter what, simply her daily focus should be on planning and creating something she had never done before. ‘I need to put my focus on being creative. I need to create something new each day. It doesn’t matter what - I simply need to focus

on the planning and joy of creativity.’ Within twelve months she could once again walk without aids. She has now been in full remission from MS for more than 50 years. In her book, A Journey of Creative Healing, Mary shares her remarkable story and reveals how listening to your intuitive voice, exploring creativity in all its guises, can deliver recovery from disease and trauma. She believes the six steps she took in her recovery will inspire and help others to find their own path to health. You can catch Mary at the Cooroy Fusion Festival on May 12 where she will be promoting her book.

AEP’s are registered with Medicare, DVA and Workcover as well as some private health insurance companies. They are different from personal trainers in that they have a 4 year university degree and have undertaken extensive training to treat clients with chronic conditions. AEPs do however treat those without any known conditions and help map out long term plans that help you achieve better health and prevent conditions such as diabetes and cancer. Alicia will be seeing clients in a one-on-one setting, as well as providing group exercise sessions for varying client groups. Alicia has a passion for promoting safe and effective exercise interventions to those within our community with chronic conditions, injuries and

disabilities. Her main areas of interest and experience include chronic disease management, mental health, as well as metabolic, musculoskeletal, and neurological rehabilitation. Alicia will work with you to deliver enjoyable exercise programs in order to reach your personal goals and improve quality of life. Letter to the editor I am writing to you regarding the “Muir’s Musings” article by Brigid Muir in your 25th April edition of the Cooroy Rag. I found the comment “I despise mobility scooters” to be ignorant and lacking empathy. The vast majority of the people who use mobility scooters have a genuine need to do so. It enables them to once again be independent and be part of and even contribute to society. It is unfortunate that Brigid Muir used her column to highlight a minority of users

of mobility scooters who may have little respect for others. But this is a reflection of society in general, there are members of all sections of society who are inconsiderate or disrespectful of others. It would be nice to see an article about the ever increasing number of obstructions appearing on our footpaths making it more difficult and unsafe for the users of mobility scooters, walkers, prams etc. to navigate. James with Russ Geelan Tadpoles Early Learning Centre Cooroy commemorated this year’s Anzac Day with the planting of a pine tree. Russ Geelan from Cooroy RSL Sub-branch who is a returned serviceman came to plant the tree with the children. Russell spoke of remembering, “all the people who went to war and who never came back”. The children planted poppies around the base of the tree that they had made and Russell explained about the poppy fields, Flanders Fields where the poppies grow wild. Dani Vickery, the Centre Manager spoke of the importance of educating children about Anzac Day, “ Having a memorial tree on our yard gives us a space to remember, reflect and learn. We will be able to watch the tree grow and it will be a loving reminder of the courage and sacrifices made for our freedom.”

VOLUNTEERS from Cooran Earth Rights (CER), a group of over 350 members dedicated to protecting their local environment, have now completed a door to door survey of Cooran residents, with an overwhelming 98% of the community voting “yes” to the question; Do you want to live in a coal mine and gas field free area? Group member John Esson described the exercise as a “door-knocking marathon by more than 20 amazing volunteers who are now probably soaking their feet in warm water!” “Joking aside, it was a great way to connect with new people in the community and heartening to discover that almost everyone, including some mine workers, were just as keen to protect the area from coal mines,” he said. The group’s decision to survey Cooran came after discussions with Lock the Gate Alliance representative, Julie Devine. “This is a great result for Cooran. The community has made it very clear that they do not want to live near a coal mine, effectively removing any social licence the mining company may have thought they had. The

community wants to see coal and gas licences in this region extinguished once and for all.” “Most Australians we meet are horrified when they discover the extent of the damage to Australian land and water by coal and unconventional gas mining, and to the declining health in populations exposed to coal mining dust which is now considered to be as bad as asbestos poisoning.” Cooran joins over 450 communities throughout Australia that have declared themselves “coal

and gas field free” by undertaking community door to door surveys in a robust democratic process. The national movement aims to put pressure on the Australian government to follow Europe and China’s lead and make the transition to safe renewable energy industries that will guarantee long term job, energy, water and environmental security. Volunteer Ann Gardiner described the Cooran survey as a labour of love by dedicated volunteers. “We want to protect our beautiful hinterland from the negative

impacts of gas and coal mining,” she said. “It’s hard to believe that anyone could be so reckless as to put profit above protecting the only habitable planet in the Universe.” Cooran Earth Rights group encourage other communities to get on board to steer Australia towards a more responsible and 21st Century direction that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and provides reliable and affordable energy. UPCOMING GAMES:

Round 4 promised to be a fiery gane with Pirate Park hosting the clash with Kilcoy. After losing 3 front rowers (1 before kick off) before the 15 minute mark it was an amazing effort by every forward to step up in their absence. Tries to wingers Jim Johnstone & Ben Webb levelled the score until a Kilcoy try right on half time made it 16-12 at the break. Fullback Gus Sullivan opened the scoring just after the break with centres Jared Melville & Riley Lourigan crossing as well. With Jonah Hodgetts converting each try the score raced to 30-16. Kilcoy crossed for two tries in the last 10 minutes with the Cutters just hanging on in the end 30-28. Just before fulltime Adam Linde sustained a terrible injury. All the players & committee hope you have have a quick recovery. Captain Grant Adams took home the 3 votes, front rower David Fray 2 votes & Jared Melville 1. May 12th sees a triple header at Cooran with Yandina vs Palmwoods & Maroochy-dore vs Kilcoy & the main game is the battle for top spot in a game which promises to be a slobber knocker Pomona-Cooran Cutters vs Beachmere. All the action starts at 2pm with the main game being at 5.00pm.

A trip to Caloundra to face Yandina was the task for round 3 & full strength Cutters line up welcomed the task. From kick off the game was a physical affair with each team having the chance to open the scoring. It took some clever dummy half work on the last from veteran Shane Hart for the Cutters to make the score 4 nil. Yandina took the lead from a converted try to former Cutter Rowdy Coleman shortly after. After converted tries from president Dylan CrawfordWindow & Liam Cobb took the score to 16-6 at halftime. Cobb’s try was set up from the returning Cody Mairu who soccered a loose ball several times down the field. After the break an early try to Cody Mairu saw the Cutters take a lead of 22-6, a lead that they never lost. A consultation try near the end saw the score finish 2210. The 3 points went to Luke Martin, 2 to Riley Lourigan who was solid in defence all game & 1 to Shane Hart. Special mention goes to Des McLeary & Gary Holder who backed up for not only reserve grade but also A grade. Amazing stuff.

Finlay’s flying high!

FINLAY Jones from Cooroy Gymnastics Club achieved one of his sporting goals this month, with selection into the Queensland State Gymnastics Team. Finlay is a year 11 Student at Noosa District State High. He has been training at his local Cooroy Club for 10

www.cooroyrag.com.au

years, which has become his second home. Training for 20 hours per week with his coaches Jeff and Rico, he prepares to compete on all six men’s apparatus in the level 7 division. Two weeks ago he competed at the Queensland Senior State Championships which

were held at the Chandler Centre in Brisbane. The event included gymnasts from all over Queensland vying for state titles and selection into to Queensland State Gymnastics Team. Over the 4 days, the championships saw nearly 500 of the states best competitors from

almost 50 club showcasing their sporting prowess. Men’s Gymnastics requires competitors to compete over the six apparatus on the first day for the prestigious all around award. The second day of competition is for individual apparatus awards where apparatus specialists do well in their pet events. Working hard to maintain consistency throughout the first day of competition, Finlay achieved his highest ever result at a State Championship in the all around finishing 3rd. His

consistent efforts on each apparatus were rewarded where he achieved some personal best scores on rings and pommel. The second day of competition on Saturday was a much tougher event, with gymnasts pulling all tricks out of the bag to win titles on their favourite apparatus. The apparatus finals see gymnasts attempting much bigger skills to add difficulty to their routines in an attempt to increase the apparatus score. Finlay competed on floor as his first apparatus, scoring 13.5 winning him the level 7 Open State Championship. In his second event pommel, he managed another podium finish even after hitting the pommel hard, placing 3rd. In a consistent day of competition, Finlay achieved two other top ten finishes on Parallel Bars and High Bar. Finlay is now focusing on the National Championships which will be held in Melbourne at Hisense Arena from the 21st May until the 4th of June.
