Cr Sandy Bolton with the ‘nextgen’ in rural enterprise OVER the last year a number of concerns from residents regarding issues that traditionally fall outside local government, including the TAFE closure and youth unemployment, have been prominent. In response, an Unemployment and Training Roundtable was organised by Cr Sandy Bolton, which has resulted in recommendations to Council’s Local Economic and Social Plans, the formation of the Employment and Training Reference Group, and investigation into the funding of an Enterprise Project Manager. These combined are to resolve the main issues identified by the Roundtable in the lack of co-ordination of resources and programs, identification of appropriate training for local industries, and developing

product and jobs through social enterprise, community funding and incubators. A number of job creation projects through social enterprise are already in the initial ‘butchers paper’ culling stage, and expertise from our community in a number of areas including the trades, creative product design and distribution will be needed once they hit planning stage. On the topic of training, Sandy has been working with various industry sectors, and is especially excited by our youngsters that are the ‘nextgen’ in rural enterprise. “The passion and ideas of Stacey Breed, Sally Higgs, TeAna Riddell and the ‘A’ team will assist in developing relevant training for our future ‘foodies’, and they are brilliant ambassa-

dors for our local produce and ‘Noosa Made’ branding,” said Cr Bolton. With Dr Pages Road sealing scheduled to commence before Christmas, the release of the ‘Noosa Country Drive’ website and marketing in November, the RV stop open in time for the December holidays, and both the Social and Local Economic Plan drafts ready for feedback and ratification, 2016 is shaping up to be one full of opportunity. “The Country Drive initiative is a marketing tool for rural villages and enterprise, and is designed to promote the best kept secrets of Noosa. It is free to be included for the first year, so if you have not jumped on board, call Tourism Noosa to promote your community, sce-

nic ‘secret’ or service,” said Sandy. Residents have experienced some confusion regarding the commencement in developing Council’s new planning scheme next year. Sandy feels this was due to the current amendments to the existing Noosa Plan, and that there is no need for concern. “There is going to be plenty of time for the workshops, consultation, and multiple viewpoints to consider in 2016. Ultimately the end result will be your and your community’s plan, so take the time over the next 6 months to think about current needs, as well as those of your children, grandchildren and further generations,” she said. It has been very beneficial to have Council’s transport consultants review problematic in-

tersections throughout the Shire. Council staff and consultants are in the process of finishing the design drafts for the roundabout and pedestrian crossing issues on both the eastern and western side of the railway line. After so many years it is with thanks that we will see these issues improved in the near future. Sandy has been working with the Fusion committee and Noosa Community Biosphere Association to bring the RecycleExpo to Noosa with hosting in Cooroy . “This is an interactive event for the whole family that provides grass roots solutions to how to live creatively, economically and environmentally. It should prove to be a wonderful addition to the events calendar if we can secure.”

Sponsor a star for a loved one

THE Cooroy community is extremely proud of the beautiful Ri-con Cooroy Christmas Tree. This year, the tree is extra special as there will be eight large stars that can be sponsored in the name of a loved one. A story will be written about the person each star is being dedicated to and this will be placed near the tree on the wall of the Cooroy RSL for the month of December. Audrey Cooper was the first star to be sponsored which we profiled in last edition of Cooroy Rag. The next two stars to be sponsored are for Andrew Spence and Reg & Una Bryant.

It’s been 5 years since Andrew passed away at just 18 years old but he touched so many people in his short life that his memory lives on just as strongly today. He was a gentle and kind boy with a compassion for animals and a great sense of humour. Andrew attended drama school from the age of 7 and continued his interest in performing and arts throughout his life. Noosa District State High School has the Andrew Spence & Jack Bailey Memorial Backstage Award that is presented at the school every year at their Celebration of Excellence Awards. He also attended Griffith University doing film, television and social studies and the Mt Gravatt University Recreational Club sponsors the annual Andrew Spence Memorial Talent Award. There is also an Andrew Spence Hospitality Memo-

rial Award at the Noosa Community Training Centre where Andrew also attended for a short period. Every graduate of this class is awarded an engraved knife in his memory. “I love the idea of the sponsor a star and Andrew would have too. We were very close and he was a wonderful young man that we all still miss very much,” said Andrew’s mum, Jude Spence. Una and Reg Bryant were both outstanding in their community service, making a major difference to Cooroy with their volun-

teer efforts that spanned more than 50 years. Reg was a founding member of Cooroy Rotary Club and both Una and Reg were members for many years. Reg was also instrumental in the establishment of the Probus Club of Cooroy. Una and Reg made a particularly outstanding contribution to the development of Kabara. They had a string of other efforts and achievements that are too long to list. “The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce chose Una and Reg to be memorialised with a star because they both embodied the spirit of Christmas in Cooroy. Una volunteered many times at Christmas in Cooroy and Reg was a founding member of the Rotary Club of Cooroy, who co-host Christmas in Cooroy so it is very fitting that they will both be remembered on

the tree this year,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president, Danielle Taylor. Cooroy’s Christmas Tree is turned on Friday 4th December and as a further show of community spirit, people are urged to bring along a non-perishable item which will be donated to create gift baskets for those in need this festive season. To “Sponsor a Star” costs $200 and there are only five spots left. Contact admin@ cooroy.com.au or to find out more about Christmas in Cooroy visit w w w. c h r i s t m a s i n cooroy.com.au.

Better recycling and more of it please, says Council PLEASE get more recyclable rubbish out of the general rubbish bin and into the recycle bin is the main message Council would like Noosa residents to act on now. Council is launching its long-term Towards Zero Waste campaign during National Recycling Week 9-14 November. The first phase of that campaign is New Life. Not Landfill. Recycle! Towards Zero Waste is in keeping with Noosa’s community jury’s recommendations. Council staff will be at National Recycling Week pop-ups at supermarkets across the Shire ready to answer questions about what can now be put into the recycle bin. Magazines, aerosol cans, plastic food trays ([http:// www.thereallygreenshop.com.au/ uploads/55543/ufiles/ recycling_logo.jpg]1-6) and clean pizza boxes are

just some of the items that can now go into the recycle bin in addition to tin and aluminium cans, plastic bottles, cardboard and newspapers. Council’s Waste and Environmental Health manager Wayne Schafer said: “A recent bin audit revealed that 20% of rubbish in Noosa’s general (red or dark green lid) rubbish bins, could be recycled into something new and should be in the yellow lid recycle bin. “Council estimates more than 2,000 tonnes of recyclable items are going to landfill each year completely unnecessarily. “The audit also showed that on average, 5 plastic bags are in every recycle bin. Plastic bags contaminate the recycle bin because they cannot be recycled and create major problems at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).” “Plastic bags definitely

Mount Walk tells the Noosa Story WHEN long term Verrierdale local, 78 year old Fay Rimmington (nee Dean), joined over a thousand people to walk to the top of Mount Cooroy on Sunday she was following in her mother’s footsteps some 80 years earlier. When her mother made the arduous trek up the local icon in the 1930s she would have been welcomed by vastly different panorama in front of her. In the 1930s the Six Mile Creek catchment would have been covered in bananas and dairy cows, with many of the native forests we see today yet to take root. She may have even see long term Cooroy Mountain matriarch Greta Warner as a young girl heading to the beauty spot to the east of the mountain with its cascading water and luxuriant staghorn that were unfortunately pilfered in the 90s. Or a young Merv Covey catching then abundant Mary River Cod in the flowing waters of the creek long before it was dammed for the shire’s water supply. As Fay walked to the top of Mt Cooroy she passed numerous young families taking the once a year opportunity to test their mettle against the mountain. For many of the people taking the walk as part of Cooroy Rotary’s Spring Festival this would have

been their first encounter with the mountain and the magnificent views of the coast and country that await you near the summit. Unlike its sisters Tinbeerwah and Cooroora, the walking track access to the protected peak starts in private property and for decades the Dinsey family (& now the new owners of Cooroy Mountain Springwater) have allowed people to use their property to take the trek, acting as the unofficial custodians of the mountain. When I first walked the mountain in the late 1980s it was with Greg Dinsey who later started Cooroy Mountain Springwater. At the start of the walk he showed me the small quarry site where the rocks for the Main Beach groins came from. Back then the top of the mountain was not protected and with pressure for the erection of telecommunications towers Noosa Parks Association legend Arthur Harrold came to me with a proposition. He offered to connect me, a then twenty-something councillor for the Cooroy division, with a retired botanist if I would help steer an approach through Council to the state government to declare the public land an environmental park. The survey revealed a few rare species including the threatened endemic

macadamia and a section of dry notophyll rainforest on the north side of the mountain. At the same time Council was just starting the Noosa tracks and trails network and I was work-

ing with a range of groups to map out routes. Greg was concerned that the historic management of the mountain could be undermined by the national parks service opening up new ac-

cess routes. I’m not sure he convinced me at the time, but Sunday’s event shows just how this community has, and can work together, to protect and enjoy our natural assets. Brian Stockwell

Don’t play renovation roulette IT’S Asbestos Awareness month, so now is a good time for owners of older houses in Noosa Shire to get to know asbestos, and how to safely manage it. “If homeowners find asbestos in their homes it is imperative that safety precautions are observed when removing or working with asbestos,” says Noosa Council Environmental Health Officer Terry Steer. There is no safe level of exposure to asbestos fibres. If asbestos is disturbed it can release dangerous fine particles of dust containing asbestos fibres. “Breathing in dust containing asbestos fibres can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and

mesothelioma,” Mr Steer says. Mesothelioma is a cancer which most often occurs in the lining of the lung, with no cure. “Most importantly, if residents suspect their homes may contain asbestos, don’t disturb it. Have it professionally inspected and identified. This is very important if proposing to undertake renovations.” More Information about asbestos can be found at www.asbestosawareness. c o m . a u < h t t p : / / w w w. a s b e s t o s awareness.com.au/> and on Council’s website at: http://www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ health-safety

Is there nothing nice happening? Surely we men should hang our heads in shame, We seem to treat violence as some sort of game. The pages of our media, our screens, are filled with nothing but doom, No sign of public happiness, no news of anything but gloom. The crimes against women, the wars overseas, The bombing, the shooting, the drowning refugees. Some people think a war can be exciting, even fun, Those are the people who have never been in one. Ask the mothers and kids whose lives are plain hopeless, Whose future begin with no food and being homeless. We tell the world to be peaceful, to disarm, Yet we can’t protect our own women from domestic harm. Our rulers just talk, pontificate, and idly chatter, Whatever they do, doesn’t seem to matter. If domestic violence is involved, the woman is usually forced to go, Find safe accommodation for themselves, plus kids, and some important dough. Look after the terrified children, at times find a secure hiding place, Then get entangled with the law, and try to justify her case. Everyone talks about it, and declares something must be done, But what actions have our rulers taken? Non – none – none.

A wise man in the seventeen hundreds, once said: “The man who lays his hand upon a woman save in the way of kindness, is a wretch, whom it were gross flattery to name a coward”.

THE Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society was formed so that orchid enthusiasts could get together and share knowledge on growing their favourite plant. The club is still the same, fostering friendship, sharing growing hints and promoting the conservation of Australian Native Orchids. The club began with 16 members and this has grown to 90 today with approximately 50 attending the meetings, which are held at the Tinbeerwah Hall the first Saturday of each month. I like people to be there at 1pm for a 1.30 start. Orchid cultivation has basically remained the same over time with only a few changes such as plastic pots instead of terracotta. At the November meeting we will be concentrating on repotting your orchids with hands on demonstrations. If you wish to learn more visitors are welcome to the meetings. I feel keeping your plants growing in new fresh media is the key to growing healthy plants. For more information Contact John Green Ph 54832764 or visit the club web site.

Do you want a home loan with more of the features you need? Are you interested in borrowing additional funds to renovate or invest? Do you want to move to a lower overall interest rate and fee structure? Your local bank can help you assess whether your home loan measures up, examine your current interest rate, monthly fees and any hidden costs. This can then help determine whether your home loan delivers the kind of rewards it should. Chances are your existing home loan could do with an overhaul. It’s a good idea to check to see if your bank is looking after you. With a choice of variable and fixed interest home loans at highly competitive rates, a line of credit loan or even a greener option, there’s bound to be a home loan that suits your needs. So before looking into

a new home loan or even refinancing the one you presently have, there are a few questions to ask: • Does your home loan offer fee free accounts? • Do they offer a discounted interest rate for having all your banking with them? • What about offset accounts, can you have the option of a full or partial offset? What about fees on this offset account? • Can you have flexibility in extra payments on your loan? • What about a redraw option, can you access these funds already paid in advance on your loan? • Does your bank have

a local manager there to approve your loan on the spot? • Will they be there to assist you after the loan has been completed? It’s all about getting the right loan for you. Remember it only takes a short time to get a loan approved, but takes a long time to pay it off, so you need to have a good relationship with your bank and make sure you actually have one with your bank manager. If you would like to see if your loan measures up, contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards @bendigoadelaide.com.au.

HINTERLAND HISTORY

LONG-TIME local and Noosa Shire Residents & Ratepayers Association President, Brian Stockwell, has started a listening campaign leading into the 2016 local government elections. “I’m announcing my candidacy early so I can spend the next three months listening to the community” Brian said. Mr Stockwell is putting out an open offer for people to join him in a local program of “coffee cup consultation. “I hope to sit around a table with small groups of people to identify what the important issues are for them. Whether people want to get a few friends around the kitchen table, meet at a local coffee shop, or invite me to their group’s meeting, I am happy to come along and listen to their concerns and aspirations for the future.” Mr Stockwell stated. “The issues at Peregian Beach are different to those at Pomona, and if I want to represent the whole of the Noosa Shire I need to understand what people want to protect and what they would like to see changed; both on the coast and in the country. “ Mr Stockwell. Brian has a long standing commitment across the whole shire having been a

rural Councillor in the late 1980s where he was a driving force behind the initiation of Noosa Landcare and the Noosa tracks and trail network. A champion for better management of the Noosa River, Brian has been actively lobbying the State Government for a more integrated approach to achieve a better balance between recreation, fisheries and the environment since the late 1990s. With the recent announcement that Cr Tony Wellington will be running for mayor, together with Noel Playford’s and Bob Abbot’s pending retirement, Brian believes there is a need for new councillors who have local government experience and a strong commitment to Noosa values. Brian has 30 years of local and state government experience as a planner and a catchment ecologist. By the end of his career in government in 2014 he had held senior positions in government including the role of Director for the Sunshine Coast Region for the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation and State Development Infrastructure and Planning.

Mr Stockwell believes “The biggest challenge for the next Council will be to undertake a major review of the Noosa Plan to meet the requirements of the new planning legislation. I believe I can bring a commitment to a community driven approach, which aims to maintain our high levels of environmental protection, while providing sufficient flexibility to attract new business to Noosa as well as job and recreational opportunities for our youth.” A life-long learner, Brian has a PhD as well as post graduate degrees in natural resource management and urban and regional planning. He lectures part time at the University of the Sunshine Coast, currently coordinating a course for planning, engineering, human services and environmental science students focussing on the theories and practices to manage change and sustainability in coastal and rural regions. He also has his own consultancy, Watershed Australia, focusing on environmental, agricultural and food systems planning and research. “Standing for Council has always been on the long term plan since deciding not to stand for a second term in 1991 in order to start a family and pursue a career. I’ve never lost my passion for thinking globally but acting locally, and believe I can bring a diverse range of skills and experience to the table.” “The time is right, and I hope to have the privilege of working with the community to keep Noosa at the top of the Sunshine Coast and an inspiration for coastal communities globally.”

HEALTH... check. Finances... check. Career... check? Are you happy and fulfilled at work? Or do you feel as though you are on the 9/5 treadmill, filling in the hours until retirement? Most of us recognise the benefits of a regular medical and financial check-up. But your career is as much in need of an annual review as your body and your bank balance. If you’re not satisfied at work, it’s easy to plunge straight into looking for a new job. But before jumping online to a job search site, take a step back. If you work out what you really want to do with your working life first, you’ve more chance of finding that dream job. A career check-up can help you work out where you’ve come from and where you’d like to be.

And the good thing is that you can examine the issues, diagnose any problems and work out a treatment plan yourself. 1. Examine—List your top 10 achievements over the past year. If there are too many to choose from, that’s great. But if you’re struggling to come up with highlights, it could mean that you need to make a change. Now think about where you’d like to be in five years’ time. Will your current job get you there? Do you need to go back to school and retrain or can you skill up in your current job? 2. Diagnose—List the top five reasons why you’re at your current job. Again, if day-to-day job satisfaction is high up on your list, you’re in a pretty healthy position. But if you find that you’re ranking dollar bonuses and entitlements like

long-service leave higher, then things might be a little out of balance. It might be time to ask yourself whether you’re at the right place in your career. 3. Treat—A good way to look at it is to start working on your career, not just in your job—start by: • Refreshing your personal brand by updating your LinkedIn profile and raising your profile on the work intranet. • Updating your resume with your most recent achievements and making sure it matches the type of work you’re looking for. • Start networking by setting aside regular time every week in your calendar to have a coffee or lunch with your best contacts. • Start attending professional development workshops, seminars and conferences. • Write for trade journals

Business Strategies DID you know that there are some simple strategies you can undertake to help your business become more successful? Today I will look at record keeping When reviewing a business, the first thing we assess is how people are recording their transaction. While this seems to be a basic requirement you will be amazed how poorly some businesses record their transactions. Record keeping is a basic fundamental building block of your business. By this I mean how you record sales, expenses, loans etc. If you present a box full of receipts and invoices to your accountant to prepare annual financial statements or tax returns, once a year, then I would suggest you are heading for some trouble. In today’s highly competitive environment, you as a business should be

able to quickly access how much money you owe, how much money is owed to you and how much money you have in your bank. There are some great business tools at your disposal, between MYOB, Quickbooks, Xero, Cashflow Manager etc to mention a few. If you are reluctant to use computers there are a number of manual record keeping techniques you can undertake. However, computers used properly are a very good tool. If you have good internet access another tool available is “cloud based accounting” giving you live up to date information at your fingertips. There are also apps available which allow you to record your receipts by taking a photo of them. We are actually spoilt for choice. I cannot stress enough the importance of good record

or blogs in your career of choice. • Get involved in professional associations. • Get social and collaborate in online forums related to your area of expertise. Should you stay or should you go? It’s one of the hardest questions to answer. Can you achieve your career goals where you are or do you need to look for a fresh start elsewhere? We live in an age of workplace mobility. With the average tenure in a job just over three years, someone starting out now will have 17 different jobs and five different careers in their working lifetime. And there’s a growing trend towards ‘portfolio’ careers, where people have a number of part-time, consultative or freelance jobs on the go at any one time. So if you feel as though

you’re going through the motions, it could be time to get on the front foot and start planning your working life to achieve your goals. A career check-up can help make sure you’re on the right track, help you reignite your spark and achieve your dreams. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 are authorised representative and credit representative of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. keeping. In my experience as an accountant, it is one of the main reason businesses fail, that is, poor record keeping. Knowing the big three “how much money is owed to

you”, “how much money you owe” and “how much money you have in the bank” are key factors in running a successful business. If you would like more

information or need some assistance I strongly recommend you see your accountant, alternatively, we at CJ Taxation can help steer you in the right direction.

news University scholarship up for grabs

COOROY RAG

Lets get this PARTY Started...

Geoff Edwards (r) joins 2015 scholarship winner, Sarah Bailey, NDSHS principal Chris Roff and the Year 12 cohort at assembly

24A MAPLE STREET, COOROY

ONE Year 12 student from Noosa District State High will soon be adding to their graduation celebrations. Well known for its support of the annual Australian Business Week (ABW) activities, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has once again pledged its support to one local student when their annual university scholarship program application period opens in December. Branch manager, Geoff Edwards said providing support to a local student to further their tertiary education was part of the Community Bank branch’s commitment to the school and building a stronger community. “The high cost associated with tertiary study can have a significant impact on a young person’s ability to further their education. Because of this, some may not get the chance to achieve their academic dreams without some help. The scholarship is designed to assist regional and rural students planning to attend university for the first time in 2016,” Mr. Edwards said. 2015 scholarship recipient, Sarah Bailey took time out during her University of Queensland exam preparations to visit the Year 12 cohort with Geoff Edwards this week. Her words and humility were

an inspiration to many who will now present their case to become the 2016 scholarship winner. Noosa District State High School principal, Chris Roff said he was delighted with the news that another NDSHS student will attend university next year, thanks to the generosity of the bank. “This will be the second year this scholarship will be awarded and we’re delighted to be chosen as the school who will give a student the opportunity to take their dreams to the next level. Last year, Sarah was the deserved winner and is doing very well in her chosen field, which is great news. This years’ winner will be a very lucky and worthy recipient. We’re also very happy to strengthen our relationship with Geoff and his team at the Cooroy Community Bank branch - it’s a great initiative,” Mr. Roff said. Applications are invited from eligible students from 1 December at www.bendigo adelaide.com.au/scholarships until 25 January and will then be assessed. The lucky recipient will be announced in time to put the funds towards set up costs for university study in early February. In the meantime, brochures are available from NDSHS reception, visiting the Cooroy Community Bank branch at 36 Maple Street or by calling 1300 304 541.

COOROY RAG police beat

Tinbeerwah Rural Fire Brigade Christmas Appeal Drive

with Sergeant Mal Scott

A TIMELY reminder in regards to leaving valuables in unattended cars is needed with a smash and grab type offence that occurred in the Noosa Botanical Gardens Car Park on Lake Macdonald Dr, Cooroy on the 30/10/2015 at about 1.15pm when an unfortunate lady left her baby bag and handbag in the front seat of her car before going for a walk in the gardens. Witnesses state that they heard a car alarm sound however by the time people arrived on the scene the offender(s) had fled. Entry had been gained to the car by smashing a fist sized hole in the passenger side front door window which gave access to the door lock. That night, some of the property stolen in this offence was located in Noosa with police inquiries identifying a vehicle of interest being a Blue 2001 Holden Commodore Sedan with Qld Rego similar to 820IEA. Members of the public should be aware that this style of offence has occurred in Cooroy with the likelihood that it will occur again so please be on the lookout for this vehicle or for that matter any suspicious activity around car parking areas and especially tourist spots such as Look Outs and bush walk car parks in secluded areas. On this occasion there wasn’t too much the victim could have done to prevent this offence as her vehicle was locked with an alarm and she had the foresight to take her actual purse with cash and credit cards with her on her walk. This prevented these items from being stolen which was a huge relief for her. Probably the only thing she could have done to lessen her chances of being a victim of crime was to put her handbag and baby bag more out of sight so as not to entice the offenders to target her car. Another interesting footnote to this offence is that items found with the located stolen property included a sharps kit with used needles in it so it’s obvious

that the offenders were stealing to support a drug habit. This is yet another example of how drugs affect us all even if we are not drug users or know someone that is. If you are aware of drug users and/or suppliers in this area please pass this information on to the Cooroy Police on 54425030 or you can supply the information anonymously to CrimeStoppers on 1800333000. The tragic death of an 84 year old Gympie woman on the Elm street Railway Bridge in September, 2014 had a final outcome in court recently when a 45 year old Pomona woman was sentenced a lengthy term of imprisonment after she was found guilty of a High Range Drink driving offence which included both alcohol and drugs which resulted in the death of the 84 year old and the serious injury to her husband. Again this is a timely reminder that when you make the decision to get into your vehicle after drinking alcohol the consequences of your actions can be dramatic and have long term implications for you, your family and any victim that is unlucky enough to cross paths with you. The Cooroy Police are still regularly intercepting HIGH RANGE drink and drug drivers. Some of these drivers are habitual drink drivers so it is a real worry to know that they are out there on our roads driving past our schools, on the highway and in our Town centre. The poor lady who was killed was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and it could well have been any one of us or any one of our family members who was killed by this offender so if you are aware of someone who habitually drives whilst under the influence of liquor or drugs please do something about it and call police so we can actively target that person and possible save a life that could well be a loved one of yours.

THIS Christmas Santa will not be dashing through the snow in a one horse open sleigh but will again be riding in a big yellow fire truck to assist Tinbeerwah Rural Fire Brigade with their Christmas Drive with all proceeds being donated to The Salvation Army. On Wednesday night, 25 November Tinbeerwah Rural Fire Brigade will be driving the streets of their area for the third consecutive year to collect from residents nonperishable pantry items. Santa will hand out lollies for the kids and it is hoped to collect as many donations as possible from residents to help the numerous families on the Sunshine Coast have a brighter Christmas this year. The previous two years have been really successful and the brigade members enjoy participating in this event which assists the community in a different way to how they usually do and The Salvation Army has been really appreciative of everyone’s support in the past. The drive will start at 5.30pm from Tinbeerwah Rural Fire Station on Sunrise Road, Tinbeerwah and will proceed along the following roads: From 5.30pm Tinbeerwah - Sunrise Road, Pacific View Drive, Smiths Road, Kingsgate Drive, Patterson Drive; From 6.10pm Cooroy - Swift Drive, Lake McDonald Drive; From 6.30pm - Cnr Forest Acres Drive & Lake McDonald Drive, Kelly Court, Palm Springs Lane, Forest Acres Roundabout to end of drive; From 6.50pm - Koala Crescent, Ironbark Court; From 7.15pm - Cnr Forest Acres Drive & Lake McDonald Drive, Forest Acres,Highland Drive, Lake McDonald. For other residents who wish to help but are not in the selected streets please contact the Tinbeerwah Fire Station on 5442 6576 to arrange a suitable time to drop the goods off at the station by no later than 1 December.

Vale: Rosa Lamont MUM’S parents, Carolina and Xavier Wyss left Switzerland by boat for New Zealand in 1904. They took up farming upon their arrival. Their two daughters were born in New Zealand, Eileen in 1910 and Rosa in 1914. Only Swiss was spoken in the household and I remember Mum saying how hard it was when they started school. Aunty Eileen had to teach Mum as well as Grandad and Grandma to speak English. They rode horses to school over many miles. Mum’s horse Paddy hated storms and Mum told many scary stories about those times. When the Polio epidemic was raging, Mum almost

Mum was in the hospital with all the people with polio. Many died Mum said but she was one of the lucky ones not to contract the disease. She often said she was worth “knocking off” for the gold in her heel. When Mum was almost thirteen in 1927, the family sailed to Australia and settled in Warpunga Kin, Kin. Many Swiss friends had settled there years before. The family worked on Diary and Banana farms. Mum’s

Dad died suddenly about 2 years later. Life was pretty tough but the kind people of Kin Kin were a great support. Mum said they worked hard but had plenty of fun. They rode horses to dances and to the coast to swim. Mum got a job as a waitress housemaid and as she said “jack of all trades” at the Hotel where Railway Square is now. She met and married my Dad Jack Lamont in 1935. I was born in 1937 and my sister Joyce in 1938. They bought a farm when I was 3 and I can still remember rolling on the new lino they put on the floor. Mum and Dad made a happy life for us. She hand milked cows and of course, looked after us kids and the farm while Dad was away working in the forestry. The McGilchrist family, our cousins, were Mum’s lifeline. People depended on each other in those days, no questions asked. The Kennedy family moved next door in 1945. Mum often talked about all the kids we had in the area and the fun we all had. When Dad died in 1977, Mum lived with Arch & I and the kids for 4 years then moved to the house in Diamond Street, Cooroy, where she happily spent the rest of her years. She loved working in the Op Shop and going to Share & Care and loved people popping in for a cuppa and a chat. Mum was such a special person in our family. Archie adored her and always called her the “Swiss Miss”. Mum also felt the same about Archie. Not many Son-inlaws and Mother-in-laws have such a loving relationship. I could not have had a better Mother. The bond between us Mum will never be broken. You are Heaven’s gain Mum and our loss. We will love you forever. And as you would always say “What will be, will be, I love yous all”. Marie Crawford

Probus Club of Cooroy IN October, the members of the Probus club of Cooroy enjoyed a very interesting speaker at their monthly meeting, Barry Sheridan. Barry has invented a device called The Fall Buddy. This device enables the elderly or disabled to remain in their own homes with a level of safety not available until now. The bench top device works in conjunction with motion sensors and actually learns the normal routines and activities of

its user. When the device senses that the user is in trouble it asks the question and if no answer is forthcoming then automatically back up is called. The Fall Buddy would be a welcome asset in many homes. The social activity in October saw the club charter a coach to take members to Esk to be entertained by the “Esk Bushbashers”. This group entertained with a selection of bush songs and ballads interspersed

with a number of funny stories. After a delicious lunch, the entertainment continued. A community song book was produced and members joined as the “Bush Bashers” played their music. A great time was had by all. This and other interesting outings are organised by the Social committee who so far this year have organised exceptionally varied opportunities for members to enjoy themselves. We are a friendly group of men and

women who enjoy listening to invited speakers at our monthly meetings. The meetings are held in the Anglican Church Hall on the first Monday of each month at 10.00 am. After the short general meeting morning tea is served, followed by the invited guest speaker. The club’s activities are varied with group bookings to live theatre events, a monthly dinner group and coffee morning and a main monthly social activity, so there’s plenty

of time to simply enjoy the company of likeminded, fun loving people. New members are always welcome to come along and join us at a meeting or at one of our social activities. You can call 54555526 for the date and time of a social activity, or just turn up to our monthly meeting. The next meeting is on Monday, December 7 at the Anglican Church Hall at 10am. The first meeting in the New Year will be held on January 4 - same venue, same time.

dining & entertainment Eumundi’s Melissa Isles is unstoppable COOROY RAG

MELISSA Isles from Eumundi is an unstoppable force when she’s focussed, and her focus at the moment is squarely on her brainchild, the Doo Wop Dolls, and delivering their next performance in a Christmas Carols pantomime for families of the Sunshine Coast this Christmas. But the ideas don’t stop there. Her latest plans also include delivering a Rock’n’Roll festival with all the trimmings in Eumundi next year, and Eumundi Rotary are right behind her with discussions already underway. “I visited GreazeFest in Brisbane a few months ago and it had attracted a huge crowd, was so much fun and had such a great feel to it. I thought Eumundi and the Sunshine Coast could do with something big like this,” Melissa said. If she’s not organising fundraisers, Vaudeville and Burlesque shows, or her sizeable family, she’s working on the Doo Wop Dolls next songs or their costume collection, which is becoming extensive. “I’ve been singing since I was very young and I’ve always loved the music and fashions of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. I’ve been dreaming about starting the Doo Wop Dolls for years and we finally formed in 2013 and are now we’re breathing new life into those fabulous numbers,” she said. “We’re doo-wopping the Andrew Sisters, the Ronettes, the Crystals and the list goes on. Sometimes it’s really challenging finding the harmonies, but when you get them right, it’s fantastic. We also do some burlesque and rock’n’roll as well,” she said. “We lost two of our Dolls earlier this year, leaving myself and Dani Vickery, but then a few months ago we discovered our third Doll in Julie Fullerton. She’s been on a steep learning curve but is picking lyrics and harmonies up really fast. We’ll be ready for our Christmas gigs,” Melissa said. The Doo Wop Dolls will be at the Eumundi Markets each Friday evening from 4 December for six weeks and will headline the pantomime entitled Once Upon a Christmas Carol at

Celebrating life LIS Blake will be hosting an early Christmas celebration for all those who’ve attended the ‘Walking in Two Worlds’ workshops. “During the last 5 months and 4 workshops I have conducted I’ve had the honour to meet the most amazing people from all over Queensland. At the seminar last Saturday, we had a person who came up especially from Mudgeeraba to spend her birthday with us. There was a person from Brisbane and also two who drove down from Gympie and Kadanga. At other events, I’ve had attendees from all over the South Coast and of course I’ve had the pleasure of meeting locals as well. So I’m trusting that many of these wonderful people will be able to attend the next workshop and it’s the last until January 2016. “Apart from having a heap of fun catching up with the friends we’ve made - the theme we’ll be exploring in November is ‘being your own guru!’ So what does ‘guru’ mean to you? Might it mean depending on someone other than yourself to find out ‘what works for you?’ How are you suddenly able to focus on yourself and become the one with the information? “Most importantly we will learn practical ways to empower ourselves so we can become our own source of information – ‘be’ our own guru! “And to top that all off - we have a guest speaker - Karen McElroy (Naturopath at Noosa Holistic Health) who will talk about the mindbody aspects of health and also explain Psych-K and the need for consciousness awareness and responsibility. “Find out more by joining me at the Ivory Palms Conference Centre, 73 Hilton Terrace Noosaville on Saturday, 28th November, 2015 at 1.30 p.m. Bookings are essential - phone Lis Blake 5474 1102 and further information is at: http://www.keystoselfmastery.com/self-masteryworkshops/

dining & entertainment Giuseppe joins Maison de Provence

MAISON de Provence welcomes Italian Chef Giuseppe Di Gennaro and Eric says it tastes like home. With the finest French pastries, made on the premises by owner and renowned patisserie Eric Pernoud, handmade chocolate and a menu that changes to suit only the freshest, local produce on offer, Maison de Provence has become hugely popular with locals and is a destination stop for those living further afield. Now with the welcome addition of Giuseppe, the flavours that are coming from the kitchen are a fusion of French and Italian, and Eric says it reminds him exactly of spending his summers in Italy as a boy. “This is real cooking,” says Eric. “It’s from the heart, absolutely mouth-watering.” Giuseppe, born and raised in Italy, has the strong cultural belief that ‘it all happens around the table’. “Dining is all about love, family and friendships and sensational food,” he says. Having moved with his wife and two

daughters to Australia from Canada a few months ago, he worked in a few restaurants on the sunshine coast before he found the perfect fit for his passion for cooking at Maison de Provence. Giuseppe has lived in Canada for 25 years where he owned and worked in two of the most well-known restaurants in the country, Capo and Borgo. Borgo was awarded the Best Italian Restaurant in Canada, and Guiseppe appeared regularly on Canadian Television shows. Both Eric and his wife Francoise, can’t believe how lucky they are to have found such an amazing chef to join their team, and Francoise who has never been a fan of a vegetable says she even adores them when Giusseppe plates them up. There’s none of this enormous plate with a tiny amount of food when Giusseppe cooks, it’s all about the filling your belly and your soul. Maison de Provence, in the Wattle Street Complex, Cooroy is open from 8am – 4pm Tuesday to Friday and Saturdays 8am – 3.30pm

Once Upon a Christmas Carol: The Pantomime

THE Weekend Walk to End Woman’s Cancer is a 60km walk held in Brisbane, which raises money to go to the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute. This year 556 participants took place in the walk, raising a total of 1.2 million dollars. You must raise a minimum of $2000 to do the walk. Personally I raised $2400 with a Cent Sale still to come. I couldn’t have done this without the support and sponsorship of the Cooroy Community, my friends and family. I would like to thank the following businesses. Without you I would never have raised the money to do the walk this year. Natanya Noosa, Cooroy Hotel, Wednesday night

Specialist skin cancer doctor at Maple Street Surgery DR Deshanu Jayasinghe has firmly established himself as a highly respected G.P with both his patients and peers since commencing at Maple Street Surgery in 2010. Preferring to be called Desh, rather than Dr Jayasinghe is not surprising when you meet Desh. A man who although almost obsessively efficient enjoys a laugh and values the relationships he has with his patients over the title. Desh places great value on the relationship between the doctor and the patient and believes it is difficult to deliver optimum care without it, although having a little fun along the way doesn’t hurt. Having had a keen interest in skin cancer for many years Desh has now successfully completed further study with the Skin Cancer College Australasia and is now a fully Accredited Skin Cancer Doctor. This is quite a coup for Maple Street Surgery and the region in general, as Desh is the only Doctor in the entire Noosa Hinterland accredited by the Skin Cancer College. As Desh explains “the traditional skin check has mostly been done with the naked eye. However, we now know that the use of a dermatoscope in clinical practise has been shown to dramatically increase diagnostic accuracy. A dermatoscope is an instrument which allows improved visualisation of the patterns formed by pigment and blood vessels. These are critical features in the diagnosis of skin lesions which just simply cannot be seen by a naked eye examination. With nearly 1500 Australians dying each year from melanoma, the very best way to prevent these deaths today is to diagnose and excise before they

Dr Desh metastasise (spread) with the resultant devastating consequences”. Advanced surgical techniques were also required in Desh’s training. A self-confessed perfectionist, he prides himself on ensuring the best possible cosmetic result for all his patients. We believe quality care should be affordable to all who require it. You can now take advantage of Desh’s advanced training and utilise his skills for your next skin check. To make an appointment with Desh a member of the Skin Cancer College Australasia, call Maple Street Surgery today on 54476644.

health Shake that fat off HOW much fat you have in your abdomen has a big impact on your health. Losing fats in your midsection does not only improve your overall appearance – it also improves your quality of health and lowers your risk of certain diseases. Health experts all agree – abdominal fat is the worst type of fat you can get. But what makes it so harmful? To understand its impact on your health, you should know first that abdominal fat comes in two different forms: the subcutaneous fat and the visceral fat. The first type of abdominal fat is like the fat elsewhere in your body. It may not pose danger to your health but it doesn’t do you good either. The second type of fat, called visceral fat, is one that surrounds your internal organs. Visceral obesity is linked to the risk of high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, and heart disease. Unlike the subcutaneous fats, the visceral fats cells release their metabolic wastes directly to the portal circulation, which carries blood straight to the liver. As a result, visceral fat cells are enlarged and stuffed by excess triglycerides, which deliver free fatty acids to the liver. These fatty acids also accumulate in the pancreas, heart, and other organs. This results to organ dysfunction, affecting your insulin levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. Visceral fat has also been linked to dementia, and certain forms of cancer, such as breast cancer and colon cancer. There’s no magic bullet to reducing belly fat. It is a result of a combination of proven methods of diet, exercise, sleep, stress management and specific individual support. The ‘Shake It’ professional weight management program uses tools and supplements to ensure there is no loss of muscle and no rebound weight gain when finishing the program. Exercising is also necessary to reduce belly fats. Doing aerobic activities like jogging, cycling, swimming and running is also beneficial. Here’s the good news, ‘Make a Difference Health and Fitness’ can offer you help with their combined professional services of naturopathy, nutrition and fitness training. The ‘Shake It’ program is even claimable with most private health funds. Contact Lee or Maria on 5442 6179 or 0407 597 748 or visit www.madhf.com.au to book in for your free no obligation consultation to discuss your individual requirements.

can’t buy yourself a Christmas treat??) Erin is constantly offering fun competitions to win things, either in her studio or via her facebook page ‘E Fitness’ and Deborah is happy to announce that her offer for remedial/relaxation massage in October was so popular that she has decided to make it a permanent offer. They are also putting together an amazing raffle prize to be drawn the week before Christmas. Both Erin and Deborah are committed to ensuring people are able to look after their health and wellbeing at an affordable price, and both pride themselves in a professional and caring service. Erin offers both Personal Training sessions (one on one or group) and group fitness classes, ranging from high intensity workouts to blissful Pilates and evening Gonging and tea rituals. There is a session to suit each individual, and Erin always modifies (or amplifies) exercises to suit your bodies needs. Deborah would like to make massage therapy more available as a regular self care treatment option. The benefits of massage and self care speak for themselves. Many of us have busy lives and are juggling many balls at a time, this can lead to overload and stress which we all know is not good if there is no release from it. Deb can help you with that release. Her room is well appointed, and she uses Australian therapeutics essential oils in your blend. A health consultation is provided to achieve the best results for you and tailor the massage to your needs on the day. So whether you are feeling like putting that spring back into your step and starting an exercise regime, treating yourself to a much needed pamper, or both, you should give Erin or Deborah a call, or pop into the warm and inviting E Fitness premises and schedule in a time for ‘you’. real estate Dowling Neylan brings exciting news for home owners

COOROY RAG PROPERTY owners now have the opportunity to promote their property to a far wider audience. Since 1976 Dowling Neylan have dominated the Noosa real estate market. With the launch of 3 super offices and a specialist hinterland team we can now bring the high profile award winning service to hinterland home owners by promoting their properties to a greater market. It is amazing the number of visitors to the area we meet who are interested in the hinterland, and our specialized team of Paul Bielby and Michelle Vercoe are fantastic advocates for the area. With many years of

successful selling in Cooroy, Doonan, Tinbeerwah, Lake Macdonald, Pomona, Eumundi and beyond they have gathered extensive experience and can ensure buyers are fully informed and understand all the benefits of living here. “It’s the village atmosphere and friendly country community which draws buyers to the area” says Paul. “When they see the quality and diversity of our properties along with the enviable lifestyle and climate, they are hooked” Michelle loves to be part of the community also and often comments on all the smiles and hello’s she gets

when she walks down the streets in Cooroy and Pomona. We both enjoy catching up with past clients over a coffee to hear how they are enjoying their move to the area. It’s always a big “Yes we are so happy” and then they have plenty of stories to share. Sellers are surprised when listing their properties with Dowling Neylan that it can cost much less for powerful marketing solutions than most other offices in the area due to our buying power. Another real benefit for home sellers is in the high traffic office locations both in Hastings St and Noosa Parade. Designer window cards with

Banana plants not doing too well? ARE your banana plants at home doing poorly? Maybe they have Banana Bunchy Top – one of the worst viral diseases of bananas worldwide. To learn about how to identify and manage this disease a workshop is being organised by the National Bunchy Top Project on November 12 at Pomona. It is being organised in conjunction with Noosa & District Landcare at the Rural Futures Centre in Pavilion Street, from 4 to 6pm, no booking required. Bunchy Top is only found in a small region of Australia from northern New South Wales up to the Sunshine coast in Queensland and the National Bunchy Top Project is working hard to control the disease. Project Leader David Peasley says the aim is to control the disease in commercial plantations and to educate the community to stop its spread as much as possible. “Once banana plants have got the disease you can say goodbye to any good

fruit, so controlling the disease is in the interests of both industry and home gardeners so we all have healthy bananas.” “This region is at the northernmost boundary of the Bunchy Top Zone and it is vital that we stop its spread any further northwards to the growing regions of Bundaberg only 250km away,” Mr Peasley said. At the workshop, the Bunchy Top team will explain how to identify the disease, to stop its spread by aphids and the best way to destroy infected plants. There will also be diseased leaves and stems sealed in cryovac to show people what to look for. Getting the best out of your banana plants will also be covered, with a demonstration on a nearby clump. “We also encourage people to bring along photos – not samples - of their own banana plants and we can advise if they have Bunchy Top or not.”

The 33rd annual Cat Challenge was held at Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club this weekend. Local Sunshine Coast competitors were joined by sailors from central Queensland, Brisbane and Northern NSW to make up this fleet of 80 boats that included, A Class, Nacras, Arrows, Hobie 16s and various other catamarans. Conditions were fantastic for the 7 races held over the weekend and the race management team were kept on their toes for the some of the fastest and most exciting finishes witnessed at the lake for a while. This very popular annual regatta started from an argument at the bar at the LCSC as to whether Arrows, as a class, were

The boats compete on a class level between each other, as well as individually competing within divisions and the best performing sailor is named as Top Cat. With a new perfect wind for them, the foiling A Class treated spectators to some magnificent “flying” by the likes of champion sailor Brad Collett.

The Aussies won the invitation tournament 2:1 competing against the best boxers in Europe. “This has been another great experience for these two lads.
