Shirt fronts at twenty paces It’s G20 time, and the media will try to organise the shirt front bout, Between Russia’s Mr Putin, and Australia’s Mr Abbott, to meet and fight it out. In the Red Corner will be Mr Putin, with his famous judo belt, And in the Blue Corner, Mr Abbott, who has made his feelings felt. Mr Abbott is the pugilist, ready to use his so-called ‘shirt front’, And swears he is really serious, it’s not a political stunt. He’ll wear his budgie smugglers, and his hairy chest, of course, While Mr Putin will arrive bare chested, perhaps on his beautiful horse. Mr Putin is quite fit, and loves to boast about his strength, His people applaud his talents, and tell the world of them at length. It may not come to a punch-up though, just a few diplomatic words, They might even pretend to be friends, but short of being lovebirds. Mr Abbot’s anger is obvious, that cannot be denied, And his intention to tell Mr Putin so, is arguably justified. But talk about a ‘shirt front’ can be easily misunderstood, And it’s problematical whether that approach will do any good, Maybe Mr Putin will just nod, walk away, and try to look sympathetic, What I really think, is that the whole performance is pathetic!!

University scholarship up for grabs thanks to Community Bank

The NDSHS senior cohort surround (l-r) Year 12 co-ordinator, Bernard Weekes, Bendigo Bank’s Geoff Edwards and NDSHS Principal, Chris Roff ONE Year 12 student from Noosa District State High School will soon be adding to their graduation celebrations. Well known for its support of the annual Australian Business Week (ABW) activities, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has now pledged its support to one local student when their new scholarship program application period opens in early December. Branch manager, Geoff Edwards said providing support to a local student to further their tertiary education was part of the Community Bank branch’s commitment to the school and building a stronger community. “The high cost associated with tertiary study can have a significant impact on a young person’s ability to further their education. Because of this, some may not get the chance to achieve their academic dreams without some help. The scholarship is designed to assist regional and rural students planning to attend university for the first time in 2015,” Geoff said. “Our Cooroy Community Bank branch is proud to support local youth by furthering their education and easing some of the financial pressure on the recipient and their family. Maybe one day our community will benefit directly from the skills and knowledge they bring,” he added. The scholarship will support a local student with tertiary and study related costs. The successful applicant will receive funding of $5,000 for one year and depending on academic performance, the scholarship will be renewed to assist the second year of their

study. Noosa District State High School principal, Chris Roff said he was delighted with the news that another NDSHS student will attend university next year, thanks to the generosity of the bank. “This is the third year this scholarship will be awarded and we’re delighted to be chosen as the school who will give a student this support to take their dreams to the next level. “Last year, the scholarship was awarded to local, Carlee Darben. She will soon enter her second year and is doing very well in her chosen field, as we all knew she would! This years’ winner will be a very lucky recipient – they will have an enviable opportunity to really make the most of their time at university. We’re extremely happy to strengthen our relationship with Geoff and his team at the Cooroy Community Bank branch – this scholarship program is yet another great initiative of the Bendigo Bank in strengthening community partnerships with such entities as the local High school,” Mr. Roff said. Applications are invited from eligible students from Monday, 1 December 2014 on line at www.bendigoadelaide.com.au/scholarships and will be assessed in January 2015 after the application period expires on January 23. The lucky recipient will be announced in time to put the funds towards set up costs for university study. In the meantime, brochures are available from NDSHS reception or by visiting the Cooroy Community Bank branch at 36 Maple Street or by calling 5447 7131.

THERE to for the Butter Factory? Over the next few months Noosa Council wants to explore a range of options for the Butter Factory’s future so they can develop a new direction that meets hinterland needs, is actively supported by the community and is more financially viable. Council has called on the public for input. If you’re interested, there’s an informal poll on the Butter Factory’s future posted on the CARA website. New Cooroy Service Centre Development Application: This proposal seeks a major change in the local planning scheme (currently it is zoned rural) to develop land that runs from the corner of Myall Street and Ferrells Road, Cooroy along the southern side of Myall Street (opposite the golf course) to the new Bruce Highway roadworks. The application, posted on the Noosa Council website, is for a large mixed use development comprised of tourist accommodation (including site manager, amenities building, 10 cabins and 27 van parks), a combined 24-7 service station and fast food outlet, including drive-through, a retail food store, self-storage units, and a four-bay manual carwash. As part of the application, a detailed town planning report has been commissioned by the developer. Stage One of the proposal includes the service station, food shop, take-away outlet, and the tourist park. Stage Two is the carwash, and Stage Three is the self-storage sheds. Noosa Council’s has begun its assessment of this application and are looking at the economic impacts, traffic flows, acoustic issues with nearby residential areas, waste management, and whether the proposed tourist park, car wash and selfstorage operations are best sited here. The community will have a chance to comment on the application when the public consultation process begins. Since Council planners are keen for community input, CARA plans to invite the developer to address a public meeting about the proposal and answer questions from residents and others interested.

JEFF was born at Cooroy, to Don and Greta Warner, on 29 October 1942, 11 months after his father returned from WW2. He was the second of six children and was reared on a farm at Cooroy Mountain. Jeff went to Cooroy Primary School, then on to Pomona High School. His first job was at the Cooroy Sawmill, then with a couple of his mates, went fruit picking at Applethrorpe.

In June 1961, with mates Alvin Wyllie, Jeff Ford and Trevor Cleary, joined the Navy. Jeff served on the HMAS Cerberus, HMAS Albatross, HMAS Melville, HMAS Quiberon, HMAS Dutchess, HMAS Queenborough, HMAS Penguin and HMAS Creswell. He completed nine years Service in June 1970. While has was at HMAS Melville in Darwin, he met and married Eve, she was the love of his life. They had two

sons together, Malcombe and Peter. After a short holiday he started work with B&D Roller Doors and soon became an installations foreman. When the company downsized, he branched out on his own and remained in the industry until he retired. Jeff did a lot of travelling and he loved his fishing. He told a lot of tales about ‘the one that got away’ but did bring his fair share of fish home. Jeff had a keen interest in History in general, he knowledge covered most subjects and when it came to Climate Change, he would say, ‘seen it all before, nothing new’. Jeff returned to the farm and built a weekender, it was a form of escape to him and he did a lot of work to keep things ‘ship shape’. He will be sadly missed by all know knew him. A Memorial for Jeff will be held at 353 Cooroy Mountain Road, Cooroy, at 2pm on Saturday, November 15th. Those wishing to attend will be most welcome.

Nurses claim Pulse victory High Quality Work at very Affordable Prices Janice Allen 244 Duke Road, Doonan

5471 1169 - 0411 630 878 reddogframes@westnet.com.au

NURSES have claimed victory after receiving an offer for increased wages and other improved working conditions at three Sunshine Coast private hospitals including Eden Rehabilitation Unit in Cooroy. Queensland Nurses’ Union (QNU) Secretary Beth Mole said Pulse Health management had offered a raft of improved wages and conditions following a lengthy campaign of industrial action including stop-work meetings, protest walks, and petitions. Ms Mohle said Pulse recently offered staff at their Kingaroy, Gympie and Cooroy facilities wage increases of between five and eight per cent and back pay to 1 September 2014. Other improvements include ongoing annual pay increases and overtime after 8 hours (or after rostered hours if rostered between 8.5-10 hours). Additional conditions and wage improvements are outlined below.

She said Pulse staff at the South Burnett Private Hospital (Kingaroy), the Gympie Private Hospital and the Eden Rehabilitation Unit in Cooroy currently received up to $10 an hour less than their public health colleagues and did not get adequate pay rises or meal breaks. “The improved wages and conditions being offered should allow Pulse to keep most of their great nurses,” Ms Mohle said. “The improved offer is a significant step towards closing the gap between Pulse nurses’ wages and those of other QNU members. Pulse nurses will now continue to do what they have always done best – provide the highest quality care for their patients. “We would like to thank everyone who campaigned, listened, signed our petition, put stickers on their cars and supported the campaign.”

BOUQUETS & B R I C K B AT S BOUQUETS to the paramedics who looked after my husband after he came off his motorbike. To Pam who heard him come off and looked after him until they arrived. Also to a lady who stopped to help me get the bike on the trailer. Made a terrible experience a bit more bearable ~ Cara. BOUQUET to the two gentleman for their help with my car when it unexpectedly stopped on the overpass on Belli Creek Road on Monday afternoon on the 27th of Oct. Thankyou. BOUQUET for the three lovely people who gave me a lift to and from Pomona (from Cooran) on the 27th October. I left my handbag in one lady’s car and she ran after me to give it back! There are some lovely and honest people in our part of the world, and it makes me happy to live out here. Thank you again ~ Carolyn BRICKBATS to those impatient rude and downright scary drivers in Cooroy and Noosa who will not take 30 seconds out of their time to wait for someone to reverse park or wait for someone reversing out of a parking outside the IGA in Cooroy or who tailgate my car all the way on the Noosa Cooroy road. This just gives visitors such a bad impression. BRICKBATS to the person who came onto our block at Cudgerie while we were out and stripped our mulberry tree. I’m not really worried about the mulberries - if you’d asked I’d have been happy to give them to you. But why did you have to damage all the branches on one of the palm trees while you were trespassing? BRICKBAT to the gentleman driving a ute who stopped on the corner of Maple Lane and Emerald Street, then reversed back into Maple Lane smashing the headlight of the vehicle behind. He declined to give particulars stating “Not my fault, your car is too small”. Hard to believe.

Letters to the editor MY wife and I recently holidayed at Noosa River Caravan park where we have come for a number of years now during the September school holidays. This year we decided to do some different things which included making a visit to Cooroy, in response to the invitation of the Tourist magazine about the Gympie region. We looked for-

ward to a market day, a visit to the Art Gallery showing the story of Eliza Fraser and lunch with some friends to support the local industry. Unfortunately we were rewarded with a parking ticket because we overstayed our welcome of 2 hours. If the locals want people like us to frequent their neighbourhood in the future, may I suggest

Robert C. Hilditch D.C.

that something be done about the Parking limit. Tourists don’t need to be forever moving their cars from one parking lot to another so they can avoid the insult of a Parking ticket. May I encourage the shopowners and business leaders of Cooroy to approach the Council with a better way to manage their visitors and make them welcome. Peter Maher

I WISH to issue a challenge to people using the main shopping centres in Cooroy. I was going down Maple Stree some three weeks ago and I stopped to give way to a person backing into a parking spot. The person behind tooted his horn and sped up and crossed to the other side of the road and passed me with a very inconsiderate sign. The person backing in gave me a wave and smile and I responded with the same. Last week I stopped for a Senior person to cross at the roundabout at Maple Street and Emerald St and a female in a four wheel drive with children on board behind me waved her hands at me to move on. This was a very hot day and I thought I would stop to let the person cross, which I believe most Cooroy people would do. What has happened to our courteous, caring attitude in Cooroy that people have come here to live and to enjoy. The Challenge I issue to all in who shop in Cooroy and districts, is Let’s Be Caring and Courteous to each other. Stop and let a person park, wave and give a smile, go slow what is the hurry, we are supposed to be enjoying a better lifestyle in our district. When we are walking in the streets a smile, good morning /afternoon. COOROY LET’S DO IT. That is the CHALLENGE. Ray Kelly, Cooroy

I WISH to congratulate Merv Jones on his award from the Ambulance services. As past President of the Cooroy Local Ambulance committee I know firsthand the dedication Merv applied to his employment way above the normal required by the employer. Some (a lot) of 14 hour shifts in the 90s, then study to upgrade his qualifications, the toll this must have taken on Merv and his family, but being as dedicated as Merv is, he soldiers on. Like many persons who never stand out in the crowd, Merv is great quiet achiever. Merv, on behalf of the Cooroy/Pomona communities a large and big thank you for years of dedicated service to the communities that you served. We wish you all the best for the future in happiness and health in life that you justly deserve. We are very fortunate in our district that we have outstanding emergency service personal such as Merv in our emergency services such Ambulance, Fire (rural and urban), Police, SES. Identity Theft Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy

WE SMOKE OUR OWN LOCAL HAMS Bone in I Boneless

IDENTITY theft occurs when someone, without your knowledge, acquires your personal information and uses it to commit fraud in order to steal money or obtain other benefits. The consequences can be both financially and emotionally devastating. Criminals may obtain your personal information through a variety of methods. It can be as simple as using ID from a stolen wallet or purse, intercepting mail, stealing sensitive information from your rubbish, gathering details stored on computers or shared on social networking sites, or even through public record. Once stolen, there are a number of ways identity thieves can use your information. They may use credit card details to make purchases, or as supporting documents to obtain even more information in order to establish new bank accounts and take out loans in your name, running up huge debts. There are some simple tips we can all take to protect our identity. • Don’t do internet banking on a public computer. Ensure that all passwords are hard to guess, and that your home computer has adequate protection. • Lock your letterbox and shred sensitive mail before throwing it out. • Always be suspicious if anyone asks you to divulge your personal information, and remember that the scammers may use an elaborate and DUCK convincing story. A legitimate financial institution will CHICKEN never send you an email asking you to follow a link, so don’t be tricked. And, if you are contacted by someone claiming to be from a bank, ask

for their contact details and call them back – however always use the telephone book or a bank statement to obtain the phone number, don’t rely on the number provided by them, or sent in an email. There are a number of websites which can help you protect against identity theft, or deal with it once it has occurred. Try www.scamwatch.gov.au, http://www.bankers.asn.au or www.mycreditfile.com.au For further information about identity theft, please call into the branch or call me on 5447 7131. Highway upgrades driving Cooroy in the right direction MOTORISTS should be on the lookout for changed traffic conditions around the Cooroy Southern Interchange being built as part of the $590 million Bruce Highway Cooroy to Curra Section A upgrade project. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the project is progressing well and the traffic changes are required so the next stages of construction can begin. “The changes will enable earthworks get underway for the new 6 kilometre northbound highway lanes between the Cooroy southern interchange and Cudgerie Drive, as well as the upgrade of the Cooroy Southern Interchange,” Mr Truss said. “When complete, the project will deliver a new 13.5km four-lane divided highway between the existing interchange south of Cooroy and the upgraded section of highway near Federal. The Cooroy to Curra Section A upgrade is one of Queensland’s highest priority road projects, with work due to be completed in 2016, weather permitting.” Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Scott Emerson said the project was an important part of the Spruce the Bruce campaign to provide better infrastructure and

planning as part of a strong plan for a brighter future for all motorists. “In late September, northbound traffic began merging to one lane, about 1 kilometre south of the previous merge location, to create a safer working zone for the construction team,” Mr Emerson said. “Motorists entering the highway southbound via the Myall Street onramp are urged to drive with care and stick to the reduced speed limit. Changed traffic conditions are also in place on the Cooroy southern interchange connection road and Holts Road while realignment works are carried out. “Another traffic switch will happen next month just south of the Cooroy southern interchange and involve single northbound and southbound traffic lanes. It will be in place until early 2015. As changes to traffic conditions continue I urge all motorists to obey signage and speed limits to ensure the safety of workers on the project and all motorists.” Motorists can keep informed about traffic changes by subscribing to a free SMS and email update subscription service that is available at the project’s website www.tmr.qld.gov.au/sectiona. Road users are also encouraged to visit www.131940.qld.gov.au or phone 13 19 40 for up-to-date information about traffic disruptions.

Don’t forget to register your dog ALMOST half of Noosa’s 7900 dogs remain unregistered a month after the annual dog registration deadline. Noosa Council Disaster Management & Public Order Manager Ron Thomas said the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008 required dogs over the age of three months to be registered with a local government. Noosa Council sent out the annual dog registration renewal notices to all registered dog owners in late August. “If your dog remains unregistered you could be liable for a fine of $227.00,” Mr Thomas said. Registration is important as it enables Council officers to quickly identify a dog’s owner. “If Council officers find a lost dog, a registration tag is the first step in reuniting the owner with their pet. It’s also important for residents to ensure their address and contact details are up to date in Council’s registration database,” Mr Thomas said. Council recently approved a systematic inspection program that will see officers conduct a house to house inspection for unregistered dogs. This will occur next year and Council will issue a reminder to residents in their next rates notice. “To avoid a fine dog owners should register their dogs as soon as possible,” Mr Thomas said. Forms and further information on dog registration can be found on Council’s website at www.noosa.qld.gov.au/dogregistration<http://www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ dog-registration>

Fireweed poses threat to Coast farmers COUNCIL is advising rural property owners, especially those in the Eumundi to Kenilworth areas, to be on the lookout for Fireweed—a class 2 declared pest plant, which is toxic to livestock when ingested. Fireweed Senecio madagascariensis, is a Weed of National Significance (WONS). It is regarded as one of the worst weeds in Australia because of its invasiveness, potential for spread, and economic and environmental impacts. It is a small short-lived perennial herb with bright yellow, daisy like flowers. These have 13 petals and are around the size of a 10 cent coin. Councillor Jenny McKay sits on the Rural Futures Taskforce and said rapid spread of Fireweed is a real problem to our farmers - an average Fireweed plant can produce over 10 000 seeds each year. “We are advising property owners to be vigilant and treat infestations while they are small to prevent them establishing,” Cr McKay said.

“A fact sheet, detailing identification, control and removal methods is available on Council’s website and officers are available to help with identification and advice on control. “Small amounts of Fireweed are easily removed by hand but larger infestations may require chemical control, which can be expensive. Council controls Fireweed on roadsides and government land and over the next few months officers will be conducting property inspections as a part of the pest survey program. And it’s not just rural property owners that need to keep a look-out—we’ve also been finding Fireweed in residential areas, including some ‘hotspots’ at Little Mountain and Meridan Plains: especially in newly turfed areas. Our turf farms on the Coast are clear from Fireweed so it’s likely being brought in from outside the region.” Council is asking residents who see this plant to contact council on 07 54757272.

Full property maintenance with PBG LOCALLY owned Eumundi business PBG Maintenance has been operating on the coast for over 25 years. Who knows what the weather is going to do? I’ve predicted it’s going to be a very dry season. “We’ve been on top of things these past 25 years, so now is the time for Fertilising and Lawn Grub control” says Paul. Due to Growth and Infastructure on the coast, there is a short supply of some Landscape and Driveway materials. However we are still able to supply most materials and our Water Truck is on standby if no rain falls, along with our Property Maintenance (Camphor Trees, Argh!!) Please!! Keep letting council know our roads need to be better. Give us a Call at PBG “Pretty Bloody Good” for Friendly, Professional & Quality service with a smile. SOME of my friends in their 30s have set up an SMSF. I don’t have a large super balance but want control. Is it worth it? If you’re under 55 and thinking about setting up a self-managed super fund (SMSF) you’re not alone. SMSFs are being established by younger Australians in a shift in the age of those wanting control over their super. In March 2014, younger people represented 75% of new SMSF members. Before deciding if an SMSF is right for you, consider some of the common questions individuals are raising with us. There are varying opinions about how much money you need to start an SMSF. Consider how much you’ll have if your super is combined with other potential fund members. And keep in mind that if your combined balance is less than $200,000 the ATO suggests an SMSF may not be the most cost-effective option—when compared to fees in retail, industry and corporate funds, SMSFs may cost more. What age do I need to be? By law you must be 18 to be a trustee of an SMSF although people under 18 can be SMSF members but conditions apply—for example a parent of a younger member may need to act as their trustee. Generally, all members must be trustees of the fund. They have legal obligations and are responsible for the management and decisions of the fund If you’re under 55 you or your spouse may be actively contributing to super—and ideally you’ll have built up considerable super assets already. If you’ve also gathered investment knowledge and experience along the way, they’ll come in handy if you decide to manage your own fund. What are the risks? Generally the risks come with the increased responsibilities you’d have as an SMSF trustee. Running an SMSF means you—along with other trustees—will be responsible for all of the decisions regarding the investments and activities of the fund. If you’re pretty savvy when it comes to investing you may like the idea of selecting and managing investments from asset classes across the world. But the risk is your fund’s investment performance will ultimately rest with you and your fellow-trustees.

One of the most important duties of an SMSF trustee is to keep abreast of strict superannuation laws and understand how they’d be applied to you and your fund. Penalties for breaches were introduced on 1 July 2014 and can be applied to trustees (corporate or individual) but can’t be paid with SMSF monies. That means you could be personally liable for a penalty if your fund is found to be in breach. While there can be a lot of work involved in running an SMSF you have more opportunity in several areas. You can pool your superannuation with that of up to four family members (including yourself). Not only does that provide the opportunity for costs savings—the bigger the fund balance the greater the potential for savings— but you also have full transparency of all the costs and returns for your super. That can help you manage your tax effectively too; another benefit of an SMSF. An SMSF gives you ultimate investment flexibility too. So not only can the fund invest in direct property— residential and commercial—but it can borrow to invest. If you are a business owner your SMSF has the potential to buy premises that your business can lease back. Special rules apply so if this is an opportunity you’d like to explore, make sure you seek advice first. SMSFs also provide flexibility in retirement. When it comes to accessing your money down the track—and how you’ll hand down your assets when you die—you have several options. It’s another area you’ll need expert advice in so speak with a financial adviser. Before setting up an SMSF look into all your options. There are ways to manage the administration without using up all your spare time. You’ll need to consider your strengths and weaknesses and those of each trustee too—we can help you do this so contact us today on 07 5447 7740 to learn more about what might be suitable for you. *Chad Monroe & Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004 are Authorised Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd AFS Licence No. 232706. PRIMARY students of Noosa Christian College, Cooroy have something to say - a huge “THANK YOU” to all the parents, friends, relatives and locals who recently supported their fundraising efforts. For the past couple of months, the students have been preparing for the adidas school fun run, and on Friday 24th October the event was held with great success. With each class dressed in a different colour, the students ran, walked, skipped and cartwheeled around the oval with music playing to keep up momentum. Collectively the students and parents, grandparents, aunties and younger siblings ran over 2432 laps which adds up to over 850km or - on average 6km completed by each child. And better yet - the students have raised almost $6000 and counting! This is an awesome result for the school with the profits to be used towards the purchase of sporting equipment and to allow students to participate in extra sporting activities off-campus. A great team effort!

NOOSA District State High School students’ hard work and efforts during 2014 were recognised at the 51st Celebration of Excellence Awards night held on October 29. In the Junior School, Outstanding Academic Excellence in Year 8 was awarded to Makayla Snow, Pomona campus, and Rebecca Bright, Cooroy campus. Jyoti Jakovickis, Pomona campus and Portia Kross, Cooroy campus, received the Year 9 awards. The award for Junior Outstanding Cultural Achievement was presented to Jamison Kehl while Maraya Palfery was named Junior Sportswoman of the Year. In the Senior School, the Outstanding Academic Excellence award for Year 10 was awarded to Matthew Craigie and Daniel Nunns in Year 11.

The Australian Defence Force Long Tan Youth Leadership Award for Year 10 was presented to Karree Lindenmayer and Penny Fisher in Year 12. Ben Mander was named Junior Sportsman of the Year and Caitlin Wark was presented with the Senior Sportswoman of the Year trophy. The most highly sought awards each year are those which are presented to the Year 12 Graduating Class. The Senior Outstanding Cultural Achievement recipient was Nadia Dunning with Jarrad Greentree taking out the Senior Sportsman of the Year trophy. An elated Nichola Craigie was awarded the Parents’ and Citizens’ Association and Caltex “Best All Rounder ’. Kali Kuskopf had the honour of being named Cooroy and Eumundi Freemasons Senior Dux of the School.

“Boots for Bali” Charity Golf Day THE “Boots for Bali” Charity Golf Day was held at Cooroy Golf Club on Sunday 19 October. David Shore of Lake Macdonald, cooked up a storm on the Barbie to ensure all golfers were well fed. David and wife Pat will be travelling to Bali on November with organisers Eileen and David Walder to provide equipment with the proceeds from the Charity Day to a village kindergarten and to help villagers in Eastern Bali. The Walders expressed warm gratitude to those businesses and individuals who generously assisted with prizes and donations. “Without such help and the support of those who turned up to play, we could not continue to make a difference to children living in poverty,” Eileen said.

Wayne Brogden of Cooroy, whose team came third in the golfing competition, was more delighted with winning the golfing clown in the monster raffle.

dining & entertainment Cooran Bye bye blackened bananas - hello banana bag Acoustic BANANAS are the No. 1 selling fruit in Australia; they taste great, are nutritious and have their own protective skin. Yet how many bananas have you thrown away due to them over-ripening? Cooroy Harvest Fresh, Maple St Cooroy, has the solution. Now stocking The Original Banana Bag, which will extend the life of your bananas by two weeks or longer. Some people prefer their bananas riper than others, so all you have to do is wait until your banana is perfect to your taste, then pop it in the drawstring bag and put it in the fridge. The Banana Bag has the exact amount of insulation and air needed to stop the flesh over-ripening while keeping the skin warm enough to prevent it from blackening. The Original Banana Bag is exclusive to Cooroy Harvest Fresh, no other shop in Australia have them, so call in and grab one for yourself or as a Christmas present for a banana lover for only $9.95 or order one on line at bananabag.com.au Joe Bartolo, owner of Cooroy Harvest Fresh, has also been busy peeling and chopping his fresh fruit every morning making delicious Fruit Salad just in time for the summer weather; grab a small or large container for the perfect breakfast, lunch or dessert. CAKE decorating is truly making a comeback with some now preferring to bake and decorate their own celebration cakes. Baking your own prized cake form start to finish is considered an achievement, knowing how to decorate it is another, some would say an art form in itself. The cake remains to be the anticipation of any party, wedding or celebration. Some approach decorating a cake with fear, which is really just down to the ‘unknown’. Katey from Buttercups Cake Decorating Store in Cooroy runs Cake Decorating Classes ranging from one on one tutorials, group lessons and children’s workshops. For those who prefer to admire the art of cake decorating without adorning an apron Buttercups would love to help make that next special occasion even sweeter with a cake made just for you. health Will you have “Happy Feet” this summer?

COOROY RAG

AS the weather warms up, out come the flip flops and sandals. Unfortunately though, this type of footwear can often result in foot problems and pain. We have already noticed an increase in the number of people presenting to the clinic complaining of heel pain. Many of you will be familiar with this. You wake up and as you put your foot on the ground, there is sharp pain under the heel like you’ve stepped on a pin. The first few steps are very painful, then things ease off. The same happens each morning until gradually the symptoms are there most of the time. This condition is known as plantar fasciitis which is an inflammation of the connective tissue which runs from the ball of the foot to the heel of the foot (plantar fascia). This inflammation is caused by excessive and repetitive strain being placed on the foot without adequate support and /or poor biomechanics. While sandals and flip flops may be cooler to wear in summer, the majority of them have hard, flat soles and no arch support. When choosing summer sandals, be sure to choose a shoe that has some heel support, arch support and a firm but flexible sole. If you need to walk long distances, try to wear a more supportive shoe rather than sandals. Standard thongs should not be worn at all if you are suffering from heel or foot pain. The earlier that treatment is sought for foot pain, the easier it is to treat. Treatment can include antiinflammatories, ice, taping, massage, stretches, ultrasound and exercises to improve biomechanics. It is important to ensure that the calf muscles are flexible to allow adequate ankle bend and reduce the strain on the plantar fascia. Foot strengthening exercises can also be included to support the arch and reduce the risk of recurrence. A biomechanical assessment will determine if hip (gluteal muscle) weakness is contributing to the biomechanical problems. If you are suffering from foot pain or need some advice on summer footwear, seek advice from a health professional as soon as possible. Walking the walk for women’s cancer CATHY Breed was one of 756 walkers who participated in ‘The Weekend Walk To End Woman’s Cancer’ held in Brisbane over the weekend of October 25/26. The walk was 60km held over 2 days (30kms per day) and raised a total of $2,087,000 which will go to the Royal Brisbane Woman’s Hospital and QIMR Berghofer Research Institute for research into all Woman’s cancers. Cathy, a line dancer instructor, did the walk with fellow line dancers Clare Moynihan, Jenny Ogden and Carol Adcock. “It is such a worthy cause and all

money raised stays right here in Qld to help all Queenslanders,” said Cathy. “To do the walk we were required to raise a minimum of $2000 each which we raised by holding a charity line dance event at the start of August raising $7623.00. Qld line dancers from as far north as Childers, south to the Gold Coast and west to Kingaroy attended the event. Cathy, who is a breast cancer survivor, says they have all signed up to do the walk again next year and are looking for sponsors to help raise the $8000 needed. WOMEN in the Cooroy area are being urged to take advantage of free breast cancer screening at Queensland Health’s mobile service which will be located the Eden Rehabilitation Hospital, 50 Maple Street, Cooroy from 2 - 17 December 2014. Phone 13 20 50 to make an appointment or for further information.

A group of Year 8 Noosa District State High School students accompanied by the Junior School Deputy and two Year 8 teachers participated in the Noosa Breakfast Fun Run last week to raise funding and awareness for a cure and the treatment of breast cancer.

NOOSACARE Staff (Carramar and Kabara) really got into the swing of things in support of Pink October. Plenty of raffles, photo competitions and cupcake sales resulted in over $1000 being raised for the Breast Cancer Foundation. NoosaCare CEO Megan D’Elton said that the staff were committed to raising breast cancer awareness in support of their colleagues going through their breast cancer journey. Even the boys of NoosaCare showed support by wearing pink! Movember is another important month, raising awareness of men’s health.

KNOWLEDGE is power. Prevention is everything. Early detection is key. By taking a few simple steps such as maintaining a good diet and taking action early when experiencing a health issue, every Mo Bro can improve their chances of living a happy and healthy life. Here are a few suggestions to help you be the best Mo Bro you can be... Know your numbers No matter your age, one of the most important things you can do to stay healthy is to know and track your key health numbers. Tracking these and keeping them in the healthy range will lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and many types of cancer. The health numbrs you should watch: • Body Mass Index/Weight • Waistline • Blood pressure • HDL Cholesterol (healthy cholesterol) • LDL Cholesterol (unhealthy cholesterol) • Blood Glucose (sugar) Know your family health history Knowing your family history is one of the most powerful tools to understanding your health and it all starts with a conversation. Talk to your family and take note of illnesses that a direct relative has experienced. Be sure to learn about relatives that are deceased as well. Your genes can influence your risk of developing some forms of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and make you more susceptible to many mental health problems Move If you are not already doing some form of exercise, start small and work up to 20-30 minutes of moderate physical activity, 2-3 days a week. Also, try to stay on the move throughout the day - every little bit counts. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, squeeze in a walk or run during your lunch break or try standing on public transportation, rather than sitting. Take action early If you experience a health issue, take action, as early diagnosis is often key to living a healthy life. Find some time and make an appointment with your doctor and don’t be embarrassed to discuss your concerns. It could be one less worry to deal with. Don’t smoke If you do smoke, take steps to stop. Compared to non-smokers, smokers are about 20 times more likely to develop lung cancer. Smoking causes about 90% of lung cancer deaths in males and doubles your risk of heart disease. Get advice about how to quit smoking, as there are many options available. Sleep Well The quality of your sleep can dictate how much you eat, how fast your metabolism runs, how well you can fight off infections and how well you can cope with stress. Make sure you get enough sleep and keep a regular sleep pattern by going to bed and waking

up at roughly the same time. Eat a healthy diet Moderation is key, as is eating a wide range of foods to ensure you get a variety of nutrients and vitamins. When choosing your meals, ensure you fill up with fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy proteins like lean meats, poultry, fish, beans and nuts. Eat foods low in saturated fats, Trans fats, cholesterol, salt and added sugars. Drink water instead of beverages that contain a lot of sugar like soft drinks, sports drinks, fruit drinks or shakes. Stay at a healthy weight It’s important to track your Body Mass Index (BMI) to ensure you stay in a healthy range. Being overweight can lead to general health problems and the risk of chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, stroke and certain cancers with the risk greatly increasing for men with a waistline over 94CM. Balance calories from foods and drinks with calories you burn off by physical activities. Manage your stress Stress, particularly long-term stress, can be a factor in the onset or worsening of ill health. Managing your stress is essential to your health and wellbeing. Take some time out to reflect on what will make you feel better and do something you enjoy whether its sports, watching a movie or hanging out with your friends, get out there and have some fun! Stay mentally healthy There will be days when things don’t go your way. To help cope with these times, take positive action by working on improving your mental health and wellbeing, just as you would with your physical health and fitness. Get active and feel good about what you have in your life by connecting with people around you at work, home and socially. Everyone deals with problems differently so if you’re not your usual self, be sure to reach out in a way that works for you. There is plenty of knowledge and tools out there to solve any problems that you may have. It’s important to remember that it’ll get better. Drink alcohol in moderation Alcohol can be part of a healthy, balanced diet, but only if consumed in moderation. Give yourself the option of having alcoholfree days to Detox your body and feel good. Wear sunscreen When you’re enjoying life in the sun wear sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher. Check regularly for changes to your skin, paying particular attention to moles, and if you’re concerned about any skin changes see your doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment dramatically increases the survival rate from melanoma. Keep smiling Enough said! Talking up hinterland theatre WHEN’S the last time you had a night out at the theatre? Did you laugh or cry? What type of theatre do you want to see in Noosa’a hinterland venues? These questions and more will be part of a community conversation being hosted by Farmhouse Theatre Co and Pomona Community House from 5.45pm - 7pm on Tuesday 25 November at the Majestic Theatre, Pomona. Councillor Frank Wilkie, Chair of the Regional Arts Development Fund Committee at Noosa Council, will open the meeting. “There is a great history of theatre in Noosa’s hinterland and coastal communities and I am excited that this event will assist a new production company to connect with its audience.” The community conversation has flowed from an animated chat between hinterland locals Louise Bezel and Andrée Stark. “We bumped into eachother in Pomona last year and by the time we parted we’d agreed to stage a play at the Majestic. The dreaming has gone on from there”, recalls Louise, Director of Farmhouse Theatre Co. The pair met a few years ago when their children were attending kindy. Since then, Louise has continued her extensive career in film and theatre by taking

up teaching positions with NIDA and establishing the Farmhouse Theatre Company in Cooran. Andrée has scored acting roles with the Cooran Players and Noosa Arts Theatre whilst keeping her hand in community development. Now the duo has joined forces with a vision to provide hinterland residents with great live theatre in local venues. To get the ball rolling, they are researching audience interests, investigating productions costs and preparing Farmhouse Theatre Company’s first show. “We are keen to hear from local residents about what they would like to see and whether there is interest in getting more theatre back on our local stages”, said Andrée. “We will be meeting with hinterland residents and industry stakeholders in November to gather information that will help us plan future Farmhouse Theatre productions”. So join the community conversation at 5.45pm on Tuesday 25 November at the Majestic Theatre and help get local theatre alive in the hinterland. Nibblies provided and children welcome to attend. For more information contact Farmhouse Theatre Productions on 0417 315 128.

pomona QSports Australasian Championships showcases horsemanship HORSE enthusiasts on the Sunshine Coast converged on Pomona for QSports aninaugural Australasian Championships held on November 1st. Based around the Quantum Savvy Horsemanship programme’s ‘Southern Cross’ pattern, QSports was designed to showcase the horsemanship, communication and relationship between horse and human. It is a progressive sport that highlights both the skill of the rider and the connection between horse and human and it also augments the abilities of both as the competition progresses. A growing equestrian sport, that Quantum Savvy founders Shane and Meredith Ransley designed to encourage horsemen and women to develop their horsemanship skill and not just their sporting ability, QSports now has advocates competing in local and state level competitions throughout Queensland, NSW and Victoria as well as in the UK. “It’s important for horses and for people, that a sport encourages the rider or handler to work with the whole horse. His mind, body and emotion, and not just make him or her do more physically. There are a lot of horses out there now competing, or being prepared for competition whose only area of well being that is considered, is how well he is prepared physically to perform on the day. It might sound all warm and fuzzy, but without truly considering how the horse is feeling mentally and emotionally, you can’t expect him to do his best in competition. So much of this is sacrificed for the sake of a ribbon at present,” says Meredith. As a sport, QSports provides something for everyone from beginners and small children through to the highest levels. It can be done solely as ground work, making it ideal for non

Shane and Meredith Ransley riders and there are ridden classes as well. There are ground work classes based around short range tasks, as well as liberty, long reining and ranch rope classes. Ridden classes include one-rein riding, bareback, bridle less and contact riding. For Open Level competitors, there is also a Freestyle class, where competitors can choose to create their own pattern based around their individual strengths. Originator Shane Ransley says, “QSports judging is based around more than simply completing each task involved in a class. The rider or handler must show ability in a number of areas, each of which is an important principle in the Quantum Savvy Programme. These are, Release, Leadership, Technique, Harmony and Connection. Our aim is to encourage great horsemanship, as in true knowledge of the horse both physically and mentally, as well as emotional confidence in horse and rider.”

IMPACT Boxing hosted its annual Boxing tournament last week end at the “Stadium” at the Noosa District High School. This years tournament was the biggest yet, bringing a huge influx of people into Cooroy for the day. There were 130 boxers that weighed in to be matched. Out of the 130 that weighed in we managed to match 57 bouts. Impact boxing has been informed by Boxing Australia that this tournament now holds the Australian record for the most bouts held at an inter club tournament, something that the Impact Boxing Academy & Cooroy can be very proud of acheiving. ers travelled from Vic, N.T., NSW & throughout Qld to compete in Cooroy. The Impact crew all fought exceptionally well in front of their large home crowd. “These kids only get to compete in front of their home crowd once a year, so it’s a really big thing for them. The roar from the crowd as each one of the Impact fighters entered the ring was truly amazing. I would personally like to thank all the vol-

unteers that worked tirelessly through out the day/night to ensure that the tournament ran as smoothly as it did. Thank you to all the local businesses that helped to support us also. Without all your help we cannot put these shows on. It makes me proud to know Cooroy is leading the way with hosting such a great event. I look forward to doing it all again next year,” Mark Evans said.

Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club COOROY-Eumundi Cricket Club completed their second round of games on the 25th of October with mixed results. Our A grade side come in with a solid first innings win against Landsborough at Landsborough, which gets there account under way for the season after a first round defeat. The boys bowled first restricting Landsborough to 197 with the stand out bowlers being Joel “ Hate em there” Kennedy and Kaleb “Mummys Boy” Hamilton with both bowlers taking 3 wickets a piece. After an up and down batting performace last round the boys really decided to keep their head down and blasted an impressive score of 9 for 397. Janos Francis and Joel Kennedy hit half centuries to start off well but the 2 most impressive performances were from Mick “Crickety Carmen and Tom

“Bluey” Mackee with Carmen scoring a solid captains knock of 93, which included some magic stroke play and a couple of times he forgot to use the bat and just head butted the ball instead?! Mackee’s innings was just a continuation on from what he does every season, Get runs! B grade backed up their first round win with another in exciting fashion. Last year’s Grand finalists showed they’re going to be hard to beat again with a outright victory over Landsborough at home. Needing 101 to win, Cooroy almost made a meal of it. With 9 down Mcburnie and Hope got the job done with the bat in a gripping finish to secure the outright win. C grade played against Coolum at home but were unable to get the job done, going down in a first innings lost. Many encouraging signs for the boys
