Cooroy families honoured with Christmas stars

William and Jessie Cambage WILLIAM and Jessie Cambage are historic figures in Cooroy, having been one of the first residents to settle into what was an almost non-existent country town and create a life. Their descendant, Kennedy McGrath honours them by Sponsoring a Star on the Ri-Con Cooroy Christmas Tree to share their story.

William and Jessie (nee Kennedy) Cambage arrived in Cooroy from Milton NSW on 6 October 1911, at first taking up land at ‘Happy Jack’ on the Mary River with their children - Eva Mary, John Fisher, Melba Jessie, Emma Ann, William Donald, Isobel McPherson, Marjorie Daisy Fisher, Sarah Fisher, Flora Elizabeth, Edna Jane,

James and Sophie McGrath and Amy Violet. Of their children the elder 7 were born in Milton NSW and the younger 4 were born in Cooroy, where they had originally moved for the sake of their children’s education. William owned many farms in Cooroy from 1911 to 1949, he was a great family man who was well respected in the community.

For a number of years, he was a director of the ‘Wide Bay Dairy Association’. This Association operated butter factories in Cooroy, Gympie, Maryborough, and Wondai. He also served as a Councillor on the Noosa Shire Council from 1933 to 1949. Continued Page 4

news Community ensures butter factory keeps churning

COOROY RAG

At the beginning of this year, Noosa Council passed the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre back to the community under the management of the Cooroy Future Group Inc on a trial period of 12 months. CFG Chairman, Tex Pipke, has now confirmed that Council has authorised its CEO to enter into an

agreement with the Cooroy Future Group Inc to operate the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre for a three year period, with a three year option, commencing on 1 January 2017. Kerri Contini, Manager Libraries and Galleries at Council, has thanked the Cooroy Future Group and Butter Factory staff for

their genuine efforts in establishing the Butter Factory under the new community management model and congratulated all on the success of operations to date. “We are delighted to have this news”, said Tex. “Our Board and Management Committee are all volunteers, and we have

put in many hours, with our staff, to ensure the Butter Factory is full with exhibitions, workshops and other activities. We have noticed increased visitations and have received very positive feedback throughout the year”. “We have exciting proposals for new ventures in hand, and on 1 December

we will be opening a retail shop to support, promote and nurture handmade arts and crafts of local, predominantly Sunshine Coast, artists.” The Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre has four part time paid staff as well as a wonderful army of volunteers who meet and greet visitors to the BFAC and who will also be assisting in the running of the shop. As with any community organisations, the BFAC is always looking for more volunteers, so anyone looking to assist in this vibrant, growing arts centre, drop in, talk to the volunteer on duty and pick up some volunteer paperwork. “We’d love to see you” said Tex.

William was a foundation member of the Cooroy Bowls Club and a keen and well respected bowler until his death on 15 August 1951. Jessie predeceased William having died on 28 September 1941 and both are buried in the Cooroy Cemetery. Marjorie Cambage’s ashes are also with William and Jessie. Their daughter, Eva Mary, married William Mark McGrath at West Cooroy on 26 July 1922; they later operated the farm there until the early 1940’s. Together Mark and Eva raised a large family - Billie (deceased 1925), Marie Gladys, Elsie May (deceased 2014), Alan Mark, Eva Jean, Dorothy Merle, Walter Kennedy, and Errol John (deceased 1974). Both Mark and Eva died in 1979; their ashes are now interned in Cooroy Cemetery with their son Billie. Kennedy McGrath currently lives in Cooroy, Alan in Pomona, Marie in Sydney, Jean in Brisbane, and Dorothy in Warwick. Ruth Kerr, a grand-daughter of William and Jessie Cambage frequently visits Cooroy where she owns property. Ruth’s mother Sarah Fraser (nee Cambage), and father, Roy, are also buried in Cooroy Cemetery. If you’d like to honour someone – past or present you too can “Sponsor a Star” which costs $200. Contact admin@cooroy.com.au or to find out more about Christmas in Cooroy visit www.christmasincooroy.com.au.

The second star on the Ri-con Christmas tree is for a local Cooroy family James and Sophie McGrath and is sponsored by their descendent and well know local, Kennedy McGrath. “The Sponsor a Star on the Ricon Christmas Tree is such a great way to honour someone special in your life. Our family felt that as we descended from two pioneering families in Cooroy it was a great way to recognise them,” said Kennedy McGrath. James McGrath grew up in New South Wales and from his early boyhood, was closely connected with the breeding and improving of cattle, particularly AIS cattle and Ayrshire dairy cattle. James won in all the leading shows in New South Wales including Sydney with his biggest success gained with the Ayrshire bull, Loftus. James also went on to become a noted judge at Sydney and other main shows in NSW at different periods. He was also appointed Judge of the AIS and Ayrshire breeds at many Queensland shows. His advice, which was always freely given, was sought by many of the leading dairymen of the North Coast. At age 35 he married Sophie Mary Badans, of Jamberoo NSW, with whom he went on to have a beautiful family. James and Sophie moved from Nowra NSW, to Bundaberg in 1906 as manager of the dairy cattle for ‘Buss Estate’ at Bundaberg with their children Myra, Rita Jane, James Clyde, William Mark, Percy Mervyn. In Bundaberg they had another child, Herbert Wesley. The family moved to Cooroy in 1907, camping in the railway yards behind where the post office now stands. In 1908 the final addition to the family, Charles Phillip Crawford, arrived. The family then settled in the Happy Jack Creek area where they developed a dairy farm. Of their seven children two sons, James Clyde and William Mark, served in World War I. Sadly, James Clyde did not make it home. The Gympie Times reported that J. C. McGrath had been killed in action on Tuesday 22 October 1918 and the news was broken to his parents by Reverend J Gaunders. James had been on the front for three years and was just shy of twentyone when he died. In 1919 William Mark returned home to his family, hailed by the Gympie Times as a Returned Hero. The grief Sophie endured at the loss of her child never left her and she passed away four years later in Cooroy on Saturday 29 July 1922 and is buried in the Cooroy Cemetery. At almost 80 years of age, on Friday 10 June 1938 James passed away in the Cooroy Private Hospital. The funeral took place at the Cooroy Cemetery and the Methodist Reverend W. Lawton officiated at the graveside. The McGrath family is today remembered as a pioneer family of Cooroy and the incredible lives they lived are truly valued by those who live here.

Where is Australia going? Do we know? Do we care? We live in a world of talk, of political inactivity, Our politicians can tell us the problems, but solving them is beyond their capacity. We are losing our creativity, our proud sense of the adventurous, Our readiness to ‘have a go’ our precious national cleverness, But while we think we’re clever, and our world is ‘apple pie’, That other world is very busy, and tends to pass us by. We have a standard of living, the envy of other nations, But we find it impossible, to understand the overpopulated Asians. The list of problems seems endless, one could almost think it’s grave. The Government won’t confront it, they’re not willing, and not brave. People want a solid economy, a quick and fair solution, Highly paid economists, just add to the general confusion. Once more the Government is fiddling with education, they just can’t leave it alone, This time they’ve picked on funding, the reason is quite unknown. No wonder the teachers get confused, frustrated, and quite stressed, Just let them teach, ban politics, it’s obvious that they know best. The young people are taught for years, study, matriculate, Then can’t find a job, while the politicians just cogitate. It’s sad this wonderful country, is threatened with decline, All because our legislators are reluctant to toe the line.

A politician is someone who can sit on the fence, and still be able to keep two ears to the ground. Jim Dunstan

A PETITION calling on Main Roads to implement changes to assist with an easier traffic flow through Cooroy is available for public signing at Issa Creations, Belvedere Newsagency and Cooroy RSL until January 31, 2017. The petition states: After many years of pleading, our community asks for action now, before another fatality – in constructing an easier traffic flow throughout Cooroy – lessening grid locks, dangerous school conditions and freeing up emergency services. Safety ahead of bureaucracy – emergency service ahead of fatality. The petition is being organised by concerned Cooroy resident M. Prior who has sent detailed plans detailing problems and possible solutions to Noosa Council, Main Roads and Queensland Rail. “Gridlocks are dangerous, especially when life is endangered when police are unable to access Myall Street and ambulances are held up on the overpass,” says Mr Prior. “It’s a disgrace. Cooroy has to use every means possible to influence Main Roads to take action. “At the very least, the overhead walkway has to be relocated. A roundabout at the Elm and Diamond St and Elm and Myall St intersections. There is no excuse after all these years of pleading for necessary changes. We pay increasingly higher annual registration where Main Roads should be working in the interests of the general public, not sitting on their hands doing nothing. No delaying works at the behest of our Transport Minister until another fatality occurs,” said Mr Prior.

Family businesses Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy Loosely defined, a family business is that in which two or more family members work, and in which at least 50% of the ownership rests in family hands. Family-owned business is by far the largest sector in the Australian economy. If you operate a family business you will face some unique challenges. In addition to the typical concerns of a business of your size, in your industry, you will need to consider the following: • How can you balance the different needs, interests and priorities of family members and non-family members in your business? • How can you raise capital without sacrificing equity? • What criteria have you developed for family members joining the business? • Do you have a family council or other mechanism to ensure all family members have a say in the running of the business? • To whom will you pass control and/or ownership of your business? How can you ensure that this process is planned and orderly? Family businesses often

lack the right outlook and professional management practices to maximise the long-term growth and value in their businesses. They have the strong desire to accumulate wealth, but few family businesses seem willing to accept outside investment or use modern business practices to maintain or increase their value. Key missing elements are a business plan with written job descriptions for management and a formal strategic plan. All businesses should also have a documented ownership succession plan. Other areas where family businesses could improve are having non-family board members, hold regular board meetings, have a plan to address technological opportunities, make use

of business-to-business ecommerce practices and benchmark their business against world best practice. It is clear that a lot of effort and heartache goes into building a business so don’t fail to extract the maximum value when you exit. Whether or not you are planning on selling your business in the near or distant future, there are some fundamental strategies that can protect and build the value of a family business. If you have any questions on your business would like to discuss any other banking matter, Please feel free to drop into the branch or call me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy), 5485 1786 (Pomona) or you can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

Ways to be a super woman with your super Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* With women having less super money for retirement than men, there are some ways to play catch up. You may know the intimate details of your household finances, but what about your super balance? Along with the family home, super is often one of your most valuable assets. Yet many women are lagging behind men when it comes to the amount they’ll have saved in super for their retirement. Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that men between ages 55 and 64 have a higher average superannuation balance than women the same age: $321,993 compared with $180,0131. In fact, across all age groups, men have more super, and a quarter of women have no super savings at all2. Why do women have less super? The reasons vary, but commonly link back to women’s roles as caregivers. Women often take time out of the workforce to have

children, or to look after ageing parents, and when they return to work, many may do so in lower-paid roles or on a part-time basis. Statistics show 44% of employed women work part-time, compared with 15% of employed men3. On average, women also earn less than men, with the gender pay gap sitting at 17.9% as of November 20154. Coupled with a longer life expectancy – 84 years for women compared with 80 for men5 – this equates to a financial triple whammy. What could it mean for women and retirement? To retire comfortably now, it’s forecast that a single female would need $43,062 per year6. Even a modest standard of living in retirement – which allows for the basics – will cost $23,767 a year7, assuming you are in relatively good health and own your own home. With this in mind, the reality is that some women will be unable to lead the lifestyle they desire in retirement, some may need to delay retirement and work for longer, and some may

need to supplement their retirement income with the Age Pension. How to be a super woman with your super While the statistics show the challenges women face, there are a number of things you can do today to understand your super and make it work harder for you. • Consider consolidating. You can do a lost super search to help you track down any super you may have left behind when changing jobs and consolidate it into one super fund. But make sure you look out for any exit or withdrawal fees, or if there are implications to your insurance. • Salary sacrifice into super. Did you know you can ask your employer to put some of your pre-tax salary into your super? You’ll only be taxed 15%* on this amount. Bear in mind there are annual individual tax limits that apply to your employer super contributions. Find out more about how salary sacrificing could work for you by using our calculator. *30% if you earn over

$300,000 pa • After-tax contributions. As well as getting your employer to contribute more money into super, you can also contribute more yourself after you’ve been paid. There’s currently a limit of $180,000 per year for these super contributions. • Low income super contribution. If you earn $37,000 or less a year and put some pre-tax money into your super, you may get an automatic payment into your super account of up to $500 from the Australian Taxation Office. Learn more about the low income super contribution. • Spouse contributions. If you’re a low income earner or don’t earn an income at all, your spouse (or de facto partner) can put after-tax money into your super to top it up. If you earn $10,800 or less and your spouse contributes at least $3,000, this can get them an 18% tax offset— saving them up to $540 per year in tax. If your annual income exceeds $13,800 you can still

receive a spouse contribution but they won’t be able to receive the tax offset. We’re here to help If one of your goals is to retire right and you’d like help with boosting your super to achieve this goal, please call us on 07 5447 7740. Please note: As part of the 2016 Federal Budget, the Federal Government has proposed to reduce the concessional contributions cap to $25,000 p.a. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004 Authorised representatives and credit representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. COOROY RAG

Ailing symbol of sacrifice OR priceless heritage on death row EVER since the Cooroy Memorial Hall was closed for public use as a result of an unfortunate but necessary action by the Cooroy and District RSL management, its structural integrity and hopes of remedial refurbishment have been the subject of considerable efforts by good and dedicated people agonising over, just what could be done to restore, save and reopen the grand old building thus continuing its glorious journey through time from its origins in 1926. The Hall was built by the extraordinary generosity of local residents who agreed, as a caring and grateful community to dedicate a part of their meagre income to create a memorial to the Serviceman and Nurses from the region who gave so much for their country in World War One. These are the ‘Ordinary People’ Prime Minister Paul Keating referred to in his beautifully

crafted speech delivered in 1993 at the interment of the ‘Unknown Soldier’ in Canberra. Mr Keating made the very valid point that the “lesson was, that they were not ordinary.” Of course he was referring to the ‘Unknown Soldier’ but the sentiment applies equally to the Cooroy community in agreeing to fund the hall construction so long ago. The Cooroy and District RSL has been the recipient of baseless, grossly unfair and bitter criticism over its prudent decision to divest itself of responsibility as trustee and guardian of the old hall. And to the ‘nay-sayers’ who persist in targeting the RSL, please understand that the club must function, pay its bills, retain its staff and continue as a viable ex-service organisation whilst addressing its own core functions. Maintaining the old hall in an appropriate manner was simply beyond the clubs modest

resources. However, pointing the finger of blame in Australia has become a national pastime and to many - the truth be damned! The latest development in this issue sees the Noosa Shire Council making efforts to secure ownership of part of the land within the hall curtilage from the very silent, responsible state government department, both parties seemingly pursuing their own interests. Many local people are also questioning the apparent lack of significant involvement by our local member and speaker of the house, Mr Wellington who has had input in the past but seems conspicuous by his recent absence. The Council at its recent meeting in Cooroy made the profound claim ‘that the hall problem was ‘not of its making’ and felt obliged to offer up a series of options; Will the Cooroy and district community find the

cash to refurbish the hall ? Should we demolish the structure and convert it to a park and perhaps move the existing war memorial to the site? To the bureaucrats and councillors who would contemplate a demolition of this fine old building, I suggest you will answer to a very hostile community if such a plan comes to fruition. Councillor Ingrid Jackson put voice to what I believe is the only sensible and sustainable resolution to this issue. Council secures the necessary funds, just the way it does with any high profile and expensive civic project like the Hastings Street upgrade and other tourist industry related developments. The funds then committed to refurbish, up grade, modernise and convert the hall into a multi-use complex. The front six metres in depth (taken from the street boundary) of the

hall site being the subject of new construction of a number of commercial shop fronts for leasehold usage thus providing a continuing revenue stream to pay down money borrowed with any surplus being set aside for hall maintenance. And finally, the adjoining old car yard site that has been on the market for an extended period being acquired to accommodate the old war memorial currently occupying the small park on the Cooroy-Noosa Road with a tastefully designed small park facility. If an attractive design was adopted such a project would add significant appeal to the Cooroy CBD, enhance the streetscape, benefit the community at large and establish a fitting rebirth of a much loved historical building. Do not sully the legacy left us by our forebears. They deserve no less. Chris Simpson

Have a say on hall’s future DIARISE the date and come armed with ideas. That’s Council’s message to the Cooroy community ahead of a November 26 public workshop to discuss Cooroy Memorial Hall’s future. Council’s Acting Community Services Director Kerri Contini today urged all residents with an interest in the hall to come along and have a say. “Council is keen to hear from a wide range of community members. If you’d like to see the hall restored and reused in some way, let us know. If you’d like Council to consider other options for the site, such as establishing a park or playground on it, then come and share your ideas” she says. Ms Contini said a community consultation process had helped decide Cooroy Butter Factory’s future, and Council was hoping for a similar success this time. “We are also interested in hearing from people who might like to play a role in the future of the facility,” Ms Contini said. “This is about Council working with residents to achieve a positive outcome for the Cooroy community.” Last month Council took over as trustee of the memorial hall, which has been closed due to safety concerns since November last year. A recent building inspection showed that the hall needs at least $400,000 worth of work to fix various safety issues. To restore it properly will cost between $800,000 and $1million. Councillors and Council staff will be on hand at the workshop to discuss residents’ ideas. The public workshop on Saturday, November 26, will start at 9.30 am. It will be held in the Cooroy State School hall, 59 Elm Street, Cooroy.

news Have a say to help shape our new Noosa Plan

COOROY RAG

NOOSA Council has started work on a new Noosa Plan to shape Noosa’s look and feel for the next decade and beyond. Residents can have a say on a discussion paper, either online, or at one of 11 upcoming consultation sessions. “The Noosa Plan is a critical document that controls land use and development throughout the Shire. Over the next three years Council will work with the community to develop the new Noosa Plan. This will be the blueprint to shape Noosa for the next decade,” Mayor Tony Wellington says. The current Noosa Plan, developed in 2006, is 10 years old and due for review. “At this early stage in the planning process, we really want to hear residents’ ‘big picture’ ideas and how they feel about Noosa. What is it you cherish most about Noosa, or what would you like to see change?” Council has released a discussion paper to get

the conversation started. It outlines broad subject areas the Noosa Plan will cover. The discussion paper is now live on Council’s YourSay Noosa website at yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au. It calls for input on topics such as community, economy, housing, transport, environment and natural hazards. There is also focus on our distinct towns and local communities. The initial consultation phase will run until 12 December 2016. Council is urging the community to have a say on what Noosa should look like into the future. Consultation stands/sessions: Cooran General Store - Tuesday, 15 November, 9am-12pm. Boreen Point (opposite general store) Wednesday, 16 November, 2pm-6pm. Cooroy (near CWA Hall) - Tuesday, 22 November, 2pm-6pm. Other ways to have a say include:

Slow bus to hospital NOOSA Shire residents who depend on public transport are looking at a two hour trip to get to the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital after TransLink announced the finalised changes to the bus network. Councillor Ingrid Jackson said this is not a satisfactory outcome for Noosa Shire residents. “I am continuing to pursue this matter further along with Glen Elmes MP,” said Cr Jackson. “For those Noosa Shire residents who depend on public transport, this will mean a one hour trip on the 620 from Noosa Junction to Maroochydore, a 12 minute wait, and then transfer to the 611 for another 34 minute ride. About 1 ¾ hours.” (SCUH) in Birtinya, south of Kawana, is expected to open in April 2017. This will be a top teaching hospital, offering all the specialist medical services which previously required Noosa Shire

residents to attend Brisbane hospitals. “Over the last few months TransLink held consultation forums with Sunshine Coast residents in places like Caloundra, Buderim, Nambour and Maroochydore about proposed changes to bus services to serve the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. “There were no consultation venues in Noosa Shire,” said Cr Jackson. On the basis of the consultation, TransLink announced the finalised changes to the bus network on the Sunshine Coast. This includes a new bus route 611 running from Maroochydore to the new hospital. TransLink has reduced the originally proposed transfer wait times at Maroochydore bus station between the 620 and the new 611 to 12 minute wait instead of 25 minutes as originally proposed.

COOROY RAG

COOROY Community Kindergarten director, Diana Markovits said the children were very excited last week when Aboriginal artist Lyndon Davies delivered a special art piece that the kindy had commissioned to acknowledge the fact that the Cooroy Community kindergarten is built on the site of a traditional gathering/camping place for the local Gubbi Gubbi people. “This has been an important project for me that I was determined to see come to fruition ever since I discovered this fact a couple of years ago and I was very excited when the Workforce Council provided a grant to make the purchase of Lyndon’s art piece possible,” said Diana. “Lyndon is the current leader of the Gubbi Gubbi people, who better to paint it. “The piece shows in symbolic form the camping site and many paths leading to it. It also depicts

examples of bush tucker which would have been the reason why the Gubbi people chose this site. You can see the huge bunya tree across the road from us and a mountain possum and his tracks. Did you know that Cooroy means ‘Mountain Possum’ in the Gubbi Gubbi language? Also depicted are digging sticks and coolamons for carrying the bush tucker.” The three panels will be displayed outside by the kindy bush tucker garden. A fourth panel depicting a nearby river and the bush tucker it provided is displayed in the kindy playroom. “Acknowledging the historical and cultural significance of this site is important for the Aboriginal people, the kindy family and the whole Cooroy Community, after all, we are all Australians and their history is our history as well,” says Diana.

University scholarship up for grabs thanks to Bendigo Bank

Geoff Edwards and Bridge Muir surrounded by the Year 12 cohort at Noosa District State High School FOR one Year 12 student from Noosa District State High, it’s going to be a fabulous start to 2017. Well known for its support of the annual Australian Business Week (ABW) activities, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has once again pledged its support to

one local student when their annual university scholarship program application period opens in December. Branch manager, Geoff Edwards said providing support to a local student to further their tertiary education was part of the Community Bank branch’s commitment to the

school and building a stronger community. “The high cost associated with tertiary study can have a significant impact on a young person’s ability to further their education. Because of this, some may not get the chance to achieve their academic dreams with-

out some help. The scholarship is designed to assist regional and rural students planning to attend university for the first time in 2017,” Mr. Edwards said. ‘’Our Cooroy Community Bank branch is proud to support local youth by furthering their education and easing

some of the financial pressure on the recipient and their family,’’ he added. The scholarship will support a local student with tertiary and study related costs. The successful applicant will receive funding of $5,000 for one year and depending on academic performance, the scholarship will be renewed for a second $5,000 instalment to assist the second year of their study. Noosa District State High School Year 12 co-ordinator, Bridge Muir said she was delighted with the news that another NDSHS student will attend university next year, thanks to the generosity of the bank. “This will be the fifth year this scholarship will be awarded and we’re delighted to be chosen as the school who will give a student the opportunity to take their dreams to the next level. Last year, the winner was Chloe Bare and she’s doing very well in her chosen field, which is great news. This year’s winner will be a very lucky and worthy recipi-

Margit Cruice from Noosa Toastmasters was the overall winner of the International Speech Contest with her touching speech about her grandparents escape in war torn Europe during World War II. Major-General (Retired) John Cantwell OA, DSC delivered the keynote speech and gave a very memorable presentation on leadership in action. John drew on his wartime experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan to illustrate the importance of leadership qualities such as loyalty, accountability and consistency. Caterers Black Ant Gourmet did Cooroy proud with the quality and freshness of the food they provided. Cooroy Toastmasters meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 6.30pm at the Cooroy Library. ent. We’re also very happy to further strengthen our relationship with the Cooroy Community Bank branch - it’s a wonderful initiative,” Ms. Muir said. Eligible students are invited to apply at w w w. b e n d i g o adelaide.com.au/scholarships from 1 December until 27 January and will then be assessed. The lucky recipient will be announced in time to put

the funds towards set up costs for university study in early February. In the meantime, brochures are available from NDSHS reception, visiting the Cooroy Community Bank branch at 36 Maple Street or by calling 1300 304 541. news Sunshine ahead for Brisbane band

COOROY RAG

The Brisbane Pop-Folk group making waves, head to the Sunshine Coast. A pop-folk fanfare of toe-tapping melodies, soaring harmonies and happy high hopes; that’s the joy evoking sound that The Counterfeit Umbrellas bring to the stages and ears they grace. Off the back of their stellar performance at Peregian Originals in July, a headline show at Black Bunny Kitchen in August and a set at this year’s Caloundra Music Festival, the Brisbane group are set to hit the Coast again, appearing at the Cooroy Originals on the 27th November. The show is close to the heart of singer of the band, Jess Irvine, who grew up on the Sunshine Coast before moving to Brisbane to pursue music studies. “It’s good to be heading back home,” she says, adding she believes that the Coast will love the energetic, upbeat vibe they have to offer. With huge accolades such as opening for some of the nation’s finest acts including Ash Grunwald, Busby Marou, and Mental as Anything along with performances alongside Guy Sebastian and The Cat Empire; the upcoming band have recently

dropped their self-titled debut EP which they launched to a huge and welcoming crowd at the New Globe Theatre last month. The record features their smash-hit single, ‘Hold Back the Sun’, described by Music is My Muse as, “a sweet and uplifting tune that will melt even the most pessimistic of hearts”.

Congratulations to local lad Jez Underwood (15) who performed in the 6 performances of the musical ‘Jesus Christ Superstar) at the Caloundra Events Centre. Jez was the youngest member of the predominantly adult cast.

COOROY RAG Cooran acoustic night BE ready for anything as the final Acoustic Night for 2016 opens the doors for the very last show, on 19th November, at the Cooran Memorial School of Arts. This beautiful old hall is the home to what began as a simple idea; a get-together of musicians, and is now the very organic, very unique, Cooran Acoustic Night. Here is where you can find the novice, the talented, the bizarre, the unprocessed; and the act that truly catches your senses. It is a place where you can come and witness such astonishingly different performances, so well indicative of the diverse talent, and creative among us. All that happens on an Acoustic Night is managed and implemented by a team of volunteers. These few people do everything, from promoting to presenting, and enjoy working together doing what they can to contribute towards the making of a fun Acoustic Night. As this year draws to a close, they will be looking for new members, a team with fresh new ideas. A great opportunity for those people who want to have a go at learning the necessary skills and what is required in the production process: what it takes to bring a show to life. A real hands-on approach means everyone works together as a team, and no one is ever exempt from learning new things! All new people are given instruction and supported with mentoring. Required: A Stage manager/Coordinator; A Sound Engineer - no experience is necessary. The Cooran Acoustic Night looks forward to seeing you at the final Acoustic Night of 2016. Does your sporty child have sore feet? With the school year winding up, it is a busy time for kids with sport carnivals, end of year productions and club competitions. Often this means increased training sessions which can lead to children and adolescence complaining of different aches and pains. If the pain that they complain of is at the back of the heel which is affecting them from walking, running and playing sport they could be describing Sever’s disease. Sever’s disease is a common cause of heel pain for physically active and sporty children which usually occurs during a growth spurt of the adolescence. It most commonly caused due to excessive force and loading of the Achilles tendon onto the heel growth end plate (a cartilage point in immature bone). Other causes can be due to poor footwear, lower limb muscle weakness and poorly rehabilitated ankle sprains. Signs that your child may have Sever’s is if they complain of a gradual increase in pain at the at the back of the heel on one or both sides, an increase in heel pain when they raise onto their tip toes, limping when they walk or pain with running or during sport. Other symptoms may be tightness of the calf muscles and stiffness and heel pain in the morning with waking. If you suspect your child may have or could be developing this condition it is contact your GP or physiotherapist to assess and provide the best management. A physiotherapist at Hinteractive Physio will assist with evidence based treatment and management for the recovery of your child today. Potential treatment can include massage, joint mobilisation, providing heel supports or orthotics, electrotherapy, strengthening exercise programs and education. The aim of therapy is to return to a normal level of function and assist with return to physical ac-

tivity and sport. If you have any queries regarding Sever’s disease, do not hesitate to call the Hinteractive Physio team on 5442 5556 or visit our website: www.hinteractivephysio.com.au

Noosacare would like to extend thanks to the Rotary Club of Noosa for the generous donation of Parallel walking bars to our physiotherapy departments at both Carramar and Kabara. These assets will be very valuable for many of the Noosacare Residents that have impaired mobility and will help them to regain function and potentially independence. The walking rails will be a wonderful addition to the small physio gyms at Carramar and Kabara for many years to come. Thanks again to the Rotary Club of Noosa for their continued support. Lions donate new hoist to Eden

EDEN Rehabilitation Centre has received a generous donation of an extra hoist from the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club. Lions Club President, Vicki Dessaix, chose Eden for the Club’s ‘President’s Project’ and The Australian Lions Foundation approved the grant donating 50% of the costs which was matched by the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club. “Being a nurse I thought Eden would be a perfect candidate for the President’s Project (large project),” said Vicki. “A past patient of Eden’s had written to the Lions Club explaining that the hospital required another hoist,” says Vicki. For Eden the timing was perfect. “With 48 beds at any given time there may be multiple patients in the building who require a hoist,” said Eden’s General Manager, Warren Street. “I would sincerely like to thank Lions for their generous donation. Local patients rely on medical equipment such as hoists and Eden is very grateful for this kind gift. The club also donated a recliner chair which is used for pressure prevention. The goal of Lions Club is to ‘serve the public’. Eden was therefore a great fit as it’s local and healthcare + community etc. Eden ticked a lot of boxes.

Happy Birthday Ken Anderson (Produce Manager at Cooroy IGA). 55 plus GST! From all your staff and friends at IGA

SINCE childhood, Janelle Van Kalken knew that helping people was what she was destined to do: after completing her registered nurse training, midwifery was her chosen path because she had always loved working with pregnant women. Years of midwifery experience later with the privilege of assisting over 200 births, Janelle was inspired to seek out other ways to further help women during this significant stage in their life. “Midwifery taught me that pregnancy and birth are normal physiological processes. A woman’s body is designed to give birth and when you consider the complexities and intricacies of this entire experience; it truly is a miracle.” Over the course of Janelle’s midwifery career, it became very apparent to her that the expectant mother’s preparation for pregnancy and even her birth was easier with a wellfunctioning body. “Chiropractic was the obvious choice to enable me to help people achieve optimal body function.” A pregnant body needs gentle care and attention, Janelle understands this

concept. Chiropractic requires nothing to be added to your body or taken out. Provided there is no interference to your nervous system, your body knows what to do. When interference does occur, it prevents nerve signals travelling between the brain and the body, as they should. The chiropractic adjustment specifically removes the interference so that your body can restore function and work the way it was designed to. Janelle is inspired by

getting to the cause of pain and dysfunction, discovering how lifestyle factors influence a unique individual and helping others to be active participants in their own health to ensure they are living their best life. If your body has been complaining, you have been putting up with it for ages, and you are now ready to create a change, call Janelle at Vitality Place 0473 23 9355. Janelle is available Wednesdays in Pomona, 9 Factory Street.

Cooroy ladies golf club - Tee off for Breast Cancer Day

LEGENDS OF LEAGUE GALA DINNER 3RD FEBRUARY 2017

BOOK NOW

Winners Maria Taurer and Barbara Taylor with Kym Logan from Noosa River and Canal Cruises. PINK was the IN colour at the Cooroy Golf Club on Thursday with the ladies supporting the “Tee Off for Breast Cancer Research”

campaign. Players, carts and golf buggies, all draped in pink, made a colourful sight as they spread across the course to compete in a dodgy stableford event. ‘Get out of trouble’ tickets were available for purchase, giving a clear advantage to those anxious to be separated from their money. Over $1,000 was raised by this small but enthusiast club, for breast cancer research. They were well supported by generous donations from the Cooroy community and from the ongoing support from Noosa River and Canal Cruises who have provided not only their boat for a sunset cruise but also vouchers for the winners. The golfers could not have wished for two more deserving winners. Both ladies have recently had some medical issues and as you can see from the photo, Barbara Taylor came straight from her sick bed to support this truly worthwhile event ! Well done Cooroy Golf ladies.

AT the Regional SES Week Awards held in Gympie on Saturday 22 October, Stan Ryan received his 5th bar to his Meritorious Service Medal denoting 35 years’ continuous service to the SES and Carol Watkins received her Meritorious Service Medal denoting 10 years’ continuous service to the SES. A number of members of the Noosa Unit attended the ceremony and are shown with the two award recipients. Queensland Fire & Emergency Services’ Executive Manager, Merrick Ilett, also commissioned the Region’s new chainsaw trailer, a brainchild of Stan Ryan. This trailer was born from a list of essential equipment such as chainsaws, polesaws, generators and fuels together with a rough plan of the trailer, ensuring an efficient way to take all necessary equipment away on chainsaw training courses held around the region. This new trailer is to be used for training and operations and in this format can be deployed as required around the North Coast Region and elsewhere in Queensland.

Cricket: U12 Cougars

The U/12 Cooroy-Eumundi Cougars took on Flinders this weekend in what can only be described as an epic game of cricket. Flinders came out swinging with impressive knocks from their top order batsman. A super effort from Cougar’s Jacob toppled the lower order and all were out for an impressive 148. With a substantial total to chase, Cougars sent out their two big hitters, Louis and Lachlan with a hope they could hold their wickets and build a total the team could support. Louis came out swinging and notched up eight fours in his first knock of 39. Both boys retired on healthy scores and their teammates followed it up with some great support batting from Kynon and Jimmy. With great stamina and determination Liam, Flynn P, Flynn S, Max R, Max W and Jacob stuck it out and built a healthy total. Louis and Lachlan returned and required some thirty runs off thirty balls. It was a nail biting finish and both boy’s healthy half centuries secured a Cougar win.

Golf: Cooroy Vets FOR the past two weeks the Cooroy Vets have been playing for the coveted Cooroy Vets Champion. The weather was terrific for both days and we had a pretty good field. After all the figures were calculated the Grade Winners are as follows; Bob Noble took out both the gross and nett in A grade with 146 gross. Kerry Martin ( a new member ) took out B Grade with 178 gross and likeable Irishman Jimmy Henderson took out C Grade with a fine score of 184. Well done to all the players who participated in the event.

COOROY RAG

Clinton rises to the challenge CLINTON Stanley recently competed at the Police and Emergency Services Games held on the Sunshine Coast 8-15th October. It just happened to be Down Syndrome Awareness Month and Clinton wanted to show everyone out there that he could step up and be counted, so he nominated to swim seven events. He qualified as a current member of Queensland Lifesaving being a beach patrol member of Sunshine Beach for the past ten years. Clinton loves being on patrol and of course everyone knows he loves swimming. First held in 1984, the inaugural Australian National Police Games were founded with the intention of bringing Police Service personnel together under a common banner of sport. The spirit of friendly competition has been extended to embrace competitors from New Zealand and other Pacific nations. From 1999, all Emergency Services personnel were also invited to compete. There were 50 sports overall contested. Clinton competed in 50m 100m 200m 400m and

800m freestyle also 50m and 100m butterfly. He trained hard under the watchful eye of coach Jan Croft at the Noosa Aquatic Centre and Georgina Madison his personnel trainer at the gym. Clinton was made very welcome and came home with seven gold medals awarded in the Multi-Class Division. He opened the eyes of many

service people and their families showcasing his courage to swim against the land of the giants. He also raised awareness that although he was born with Down syndrome given the opportunity you can achieve anything. Everyone agreed Clinton did Step Up For Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
