Managing your day-to-day finances is a challenge and we all know that life can be unpredictable. Here are a few tips as we all start thinking about the expense of Christmas season ahead. As a general rule, it’s almost always better to use any spare cash you’ve got to pay down debt. This rule is even truer when it’s a mortgage for your own home or a credit card or personal loan. This type of debt isn’t tax-deductible and what this means is that any other investment (savings account, managed funds, share market etc) has to do substantially better than the interest rate on your mortgage to be a better deal. Say your interest rate on your mortgage is about 5% and your effective tax rate is 25%, then you’d need to get in excess of 9.3% on the investment for that to be a better option than paying the cash into your mortgage. There may be investments where you’re sure about getting 9.3% or better but is there any risk? There is no risk in paying down debt. Credit card interest rates typically go from 12.0% upwards, so credit card debt can be a little on the expensive side. Are you using your credit card sensibly? Too many of us don’t and in fact leave large balances unpaid on our cards. If you’ve got a debt that’s crept away from you, one option is to look at balance-transfer credit cards. A balance-transfer card allows you to take the balance from one card, move it to a new card, and get a “honeymoon” low rate on that balance for a period of time. It’s a good way to start afresh, but you

need to have a plan to get the debt under control, and not just run up a new debt on the new card. You still need to pay the debt off, and if you don’t, there will come a point where you’re facing a much higher interest rate. To talk more about budgeting or any other banking matter, please call into the branch or call me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona). You’re also welcome to email me at simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au. Simone Flavelle is the Senior Branch Manager of the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank.

Circle the date. Pomona is going to finish their 2018 event calendar with a bang on November 29. A big crowd is expected in Stan Topper Park for the annual Pomona in the Park celebration and the twilight event continues to grow in fun and size. The event is the biggest fundraiser for the year for the Pomona State School P&C, and draws locals of all ages. Getting underway at 5.30pm, the production will see performances

from each of the 13 classes as well as the school concert band, rock band, choir and the winner of Pomona’s Got Talent. School principal, Alyson Covey says it’s something the students and families of Pomona look forward to every year. “Make sure you’re at Stan Topper Park,” Alyson said. “The mega raffle grand prize to be won will be a two-night accommodation package at Eurong Beach Resort

on Fraser Island in a two-bedroom apartment. There’s also an accommodation prize at RACV Resort, a joy flight with Paradise Sea Planes and a hamper from Orange Café to be won along with heaps of other great prizes,” Alyson said. Tickets are only $2.00 and can be purchased on the night or from Pomona State School administration office in the lead up to the event. Plenty of food will be available on the night too, with the Cooroy

Pomona Lions running their BBQ food stall and ice cream and coffee vans will also be on site. Pomona Student Council will be selling show bags at the park on the night with proceeds going towards a new senior playground. The show bags will only be $5.00 with all goods donated by local businesses and only 100 show bags available, so you had better be quick. Events like Pomona in the Park don’t happen without generous supporters. Apart from the many volunteers who will band together to make the celebration possible, four local businesses are doing their part to support their community. Pomona IGA, Pages Furnishers, Energex and the Pomona Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank will be major sponsors on November 29. Pomona Community Bank Branch’s, Geoff Edwards said he knows the event will be a great success again this ear. “Pomona in the Park is another great chance for

Pomona to showcase its community spirit. As locals, we know it’s important for the kids, the family and most of all, the school. Our branch is able to continue to support Pomona State School with this event and other projects because locals choose to bank with us. “The more Pomona banks with us, the more we can give back. It’s part of why part why locals said they wanted their own bank in the first place. Whilst other banks continue to leave the hinterland, we’re here to stay,” Geoff said. In the lead up to Pomona in the Park, the entire school community will combine to help out in creating what is a massive temporary show ground for the celebration and the Year 6 students will countdown to the fireworks display at the end of the evening. For more information on Pomona on the Park, call Pomona State School on 5480 8222.

COOROY RAG Meet The Kindness Club!

Time to meet another kind-hearted club member! Along with our articles and projects, we will include member profiles. The children will share their feelings about kindness and a little about themselves. Milla – Grade 3 What does kindness mean to you? That if we keep spreading kindness it will be a kinder world and kindness will just keep going and going. The last kind deed you did for someone? I made Bruce (neighbour) some cookies because he sometimes would look after our dog and come around to our house. A kindness shown to you? My Mum cleaned my whole room and I was amazed at what she did. Now I have more space to play. How does kindness make you feel? Kindness makes me feel

really happy and excited and once I hear about kindness my heart blows up because there’s so much kindness. What makes you happy? Opening presents at Christmas, cuddling my teddies when I go to bed, and colouring with my friends. “Little hearts can make a big difference” The Kindness Club would love to hear from you and share your experiences! Rural Enterprise Program completes research and seeks discussion Community members are being encouraged to discuss future opportunities in sustainable agriculture for the region as part of the Noosa’s first Rural Enterpise Program. The Rural Enterprise Program is led by Country Noosa with partners from the University of the Sunshine Coast and Noosa and District Landcare, with funding from the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation Big Ideas grants. These upcoming forums/workshops follow the completion of the first phase of the project, which has involved initial research into the development a sustainable hinterland economy through rural enterprise. Three workshops will be held to identify the key opportunities for new products and markets, collaboration and resource sharing, and ecotourism in the hinterland. Anyone with an interest in these topics are encouraged to attend. The workshops will be held in Cooroy on 22nd November and in Kin Kin on 3rd December. See www.countrynoosa.com

for more information and to register. The workshops build on initial consultations with the local community and desktop research to uncover opportunities and enablers to support sustainable rural enterprise in the region. Nine concept papers covering everything from holistic farm planning and permaculture to carbon farming and ecotourism have been developed”, said project manager, Melanie Butcher. “Now that we have established areas of interest and undertaken the research, we want to gather community members and landowners to establish tangible next steps that will capitalise on those opportunities identified,” said Country Noosa’s Nina Saxton. Each concept paper outlines the enablers and constraints for the topic, and includes case studies from local sustainable farming initiatives, businesses, collaborations and projects from further afield. The concept papers will be made available on the Country Noosa website and for discussion at the three workshops.

Tasmania in March – See the highlights of the east coast as we head south, then cross Bass Strait on the Spirit of Tasmania. Tasmania boasts one of the world’s most pristine natural environments. From our start point at Devonport we will be captivated by the scenery. As we travel together, we will delve into the local life even further. The history will intrigue, the local artisans and village life will inspire us and of course, the food! Local cooks, local produce and local knowledge can only mean one thing….. a fantastic journey of discovery, including the Wild West Coast before heading home through western Victoria and New South Wales. The Outback and Gulf tour in May is a circle tour of Outback Queensland and the Gulf, by travelling this region we can show our support to the locals. From Charleville and Longreach to Mount Isa, the outback opens before us. Then we turn north towards the barras, the crocs and a sunset on the Gulf. The vast open spaces are truly appreciated at ground level with wonders at every turn, like the Undara Lava Tubes and so much more before we head for home. In July and August we are Bound for South Australia, come aboard for the full tour or join us in Adelaide. We head steadily south west towards Adelaide through inland New South Wales, onto Broken Hill and the Barossa, then to

complete the journey we visit Kangaroo Island, the Murray River Cruise and Western Plains Zoo and Tamworth. As the weather turns cool in August we set our sights northward towards the sun and head for Cairns and North Queensland. We travel north along the coast between the pristine waters of the Barrier Reef and the harsh cattle grazing lands. Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays; Townsville and Magnetic Island; Cairns and the Daintree, then inland for a wealth of new experiences and historical journeys from Undara to Charters Towers and home. St George, Broken Hill, Bourke and Lightning Ridge… adventure awaits you. Spread your wings in October and come with us to Norway, where we will immerse in a culture very different to ours. We board our cruise ship and follow the coast of Norway north to cross the Arctic Circle, stepping off the ship to explore the land and townships. Our final leg takes us to Iceland where by day we are guided to see many fascinating sights and by night we turn our attention to the heavens in hopes of seeing the Northern Lights. dining & entertainment Grease is the word at Eumundi Drive-in Starry Nights Outdoor Movies presents the one and only cult classic GREASE at the Eumundi Drive-in on Saturday 24 November and Sunday 25 November. Come along for a night of hydromatic systematic good times under the starry skies. Starry Nights Director Trent Harvison says screening film choice was in response to demand by movie-lovers across the Coast. “Grease is our most requested flick by a long shot,” says Trent. “With its mix of nostalgia, all time classic hit songs and Rydell High romance, it’s the perfect fit for a drive-in trip down memory lane”. “We encourage movie-goers to roll up by the car load, with the ticket price a flat $25 per car,” he says. “For those that prefer to walk-in and sit up the front, it’s just $10 per person”. “We’re happy for people to get comfortable on lounge chairs on utes, bring their own bean bags, or spread out a picnic rug on the grass,” he says. Trent explains that audio on the night is broadcast through the powerful Starry Nights outdoor speakers, with drivers also able to tune in via their FM car stereos. To guarantee a spot on the night, pre-book your tickets at www.ticketebo.com.au/starrynights. Venue: Eumundi Showgrounds, Black Stump Rd - off Memorial Drive, Eumundi. Use it or lose it! If you, like many Australians, have optical extras with a health fund that you haven’t used yet this year then it’s not too late to take advantage of our expertise at optometry@cooroy to find the perfect eyewear solution tailored to your unique needs. At optometry@cooroy we take our job as eyewear experts seriously and take the time to understand you in order to tailor all solutions to your unique vision, eye health and lifestyle needs. In our comprehensive eye examination we not only evaluate the sharpness of your vision, we examine the internal and external health of your eyes at length to check for signs of eye disease, UV damage and other general health conditions that can show up in the eyes. To ensure we provide a holistic examination our 360 degree comprehensive consultations may include 10 steps: Listening to you; Eye health; Eye focusing; Eye coordination; Eye protection; Contact Lenses; Lens Advice; Health and Lifestyle; Eye medications; Total Solution and Eyecare Plan

People often only come and see us when things start to get blurry or they have to hold a book closer to their face. The fact is 1 in 4 Australians are at risk of losing all or part of their vision due to eye disease - nearly half of these wait until their eyes deteriorate before getting them checked. We can’t comment on what others do but we can tell you that our 360 degree eye consultation is a comprehensive consultation. It is a holistic approach that includes an extensive eye consultation as well as advice on health, diet and products to help your vision. We take the time that is necessary to give you recommendations and tips for maintaining healthy eyes and vision. Regular eye examinations can help defend against avoidable vision loss and blindness. Many forms of eye disease, if picked up early, can be treated. In fact 75% of all eye disease can be treated with early detection. A beat pumping dance party workout Leanne Paix will be holding Jazzercise classes at the Cooroy Memorial Hall on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6pm. Jazzercise is the original dance party workout. No other dance fitness company can claim the Jazzercise legacy of 50 successful years in business. The fitness program blends dance cardio with Pilates, yoga, kickboxing and strength training for the ultimate full-body workout. In fact, one 55-minute session can burn up to 800 calories plus more during excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), which lasts up to 72 hours! Jazzercise class formats - Dance Mixx, Interval, Strike, Fusion, Strength and Core - incorporate important fitness trends such as high interval intensity training (HIIT) and recovery (LO)

training while building long, lean muscles and offering a mood boost that can’t be beat. “The Jazzercise method has stood the test of time because our program has continuously evolved to get you results,” says Leanne. “We constantly develop our choreography, mixing in new music. Today Jazzercise is a calorie-torching, beatpumping dance party workout that gets you results fast. We have a new look, new voice and new classes. We recharged our brand to reflect the calorie-crushing intensity of our workouts and confront the misconception that Jazzercise hasn’t evolved from the 1980’s. Our new brand expression is modern, motivating and fresh - just like what customers experience in class today. Take a class and see for yourself!”

Fifty years after he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, Cooroy’s Dr John Guthrie has received a medal to mark the occasion. He used the occasion to apologise to his daughter for making up a story about how he developed diabetes. “Please forgive me, Kim, for telling you when you were at kindy many years ago that I got diabetes from the toilet seat. “I know that when you told the class next day in ‘Show and Tell’ it caused you much embarrassment. So sorry!” Unlike type 2 diabetes, the onset of type 1 cannot be predicted or slowed through treatment, diet or exercise and is not contagious. It is an autoimmune condition that destroys insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Nearly 23,000 Queenslanders have type 1 diabetes and must inject synthetic insulin several times a day. The challenge for people injecting insulin is finding the delicate balance between the danger of a coma caused by hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose) on one hand and the deadly risk of diabetic

ketoacidosis, caused by hyperglycaemia (high blood glucose), on the other. John celebrated his 50th anniversary of living with type 1 diabetes at a gathering of Kellion Victory Medal recipients, staged on Sunday by Diabetes Queensland to highlight World Diabetes Day on November 14 at the Kedron-Wavell Services Club. The medals were presented by Dr Alan Stocks AM of the Kellion Diabetes Foundation. John said he had never allowed diabetes to reduce his lifestyle or activities, having played many sports such as rugby, squash, golf, and horse trail riding through the years, as well as travelling extensively. Besides apologising, John, who has a PhD in food technology and the assessment of internal food quality, was quick to thank his team of medical specialists, GP, and podiatrists, but most of all his family. “I am eternally grateful to my wife of 48 years, Sandra, and our two daughters Kim and Jane for their care and love.”

COOROY RAG Cooroy Probus

LEANNE PAIX JAZZERCISE INSTRUCTOR Happy 19th Birthday Dylan Evans

Happy Sweet 16th to Sonia Evans

Happy Birthday to Members Peter Dunwell, Lyn Bunney, Marie Barton and Ron Strudwick. The PROBUS Club of Cooroy continues to grow with visitors attending each meeting and deciding to join. Our Social Committee tries to organise at least one social gathering each week to keep us connected, keeps us active and most importantly - keep us fed ! At this month’s meeting we were enlightened by an address from Roslyn Leslie of Wolvo’s, a wildlife volunteers program. Her talk gave us information on a variety of Australian animals and what Wolvo’s volunteers do for them when injured. After the meeting we trooped off to the RSL for lunch and a tour of the excellent Centenary exhibition next door. A big thank you to all who contributed to putting that exhibition together. A job well done. Planning is underway for our Christmas luncheon at the Saw and Mill in Cooroy. We always try to support our local businesses. Anyone interested in learning more about our local PROBUS Club should come along to our next meeting on Monday 3rd December at 10 am in the Anglican Church Hall, Miva Street.

Understanding Insurance when buying a house in Queensland Many people don’t realise that when purchasing a residential property in Queensland that the risk for the property passes to the buyer from 5pm on the first business day after the contract date. This risk is not only for property damage but also personal injury. If the property is damaged between the contract date and the settlement date, unless the property is significantly damaged or completely destroyed, the buyer may still be obliged to go ahead with settlement. Although the seller does have the responsibility to be reasonable in looking after the property during the settlement period, it is very impor-

tant that you have insurance to protect your interests and to reduce risk if there is accidental damage (such as a storm or fire). If you are buying an investment property, you may not be aware of any injury or accident that may have occurred until a long time after settlement. And the seller’s insurer will invariably deny coverage if it was during the settlement period. Therefore it’s very important to organise insurance immediately after you sign a contract. If you have any questions please contact Andrew Markert at SPM Law 5440 4800.

U15 Oscar Long in full delivery stride taking 2 wickets for 7 runs against Caboolture 3A’s resumed their Round 3 local derby against Tewantin-Noosa at Sel Bonnel Oval with the visitors chasing 181 for first inning’s honours. But the hosts were left rueing a few dropped catches and missed half chances that could have swung the game in their favour. A solid match winning innings from TNT’s Kent Officer (70) was the difference in a closely fought contest that could have gone either way. Cooroy’s bowlers toiled, but anything short was dispatched on an unusually slow deck, and those half chances just didn’t go to hand. Phil Anderson’s outstanding 5 for 19 kept Cooroy in the game, but it wasn’t enough despite a committed and positive effort in the field. Lessons will be learnt from this tight one! 5th grade hosted Maleny at Cooroy, with the visitors winning the toss and batting first to a sound 6 for 178 off their 35 overs. Veteran Brett Underwood spearheaded the pace attack with superb figure of 4 for 24, backed up by Darcey Crawford-Rickards taking 3 for 18 off his 7 overs. In reply, Cooroy batted strongly with openers Josh Butterfield (32) and Darcey (38) building a solid base, before Chris Langfeldt (66) led the hosts home with 4 overs to

spare. A totally deserved first win of the season for the 5th grade boys. The U15’s game at Caboolture resumed with the hosts at 2-12, chasing a Cooroy total of 190. Many quick wickets fell early in the morning session, but a little resistance from the batting team got them to a total of 144 all out, falling 46 runs short. Stand out performances included Brayden Forrest (4 for 12), Oscar Long (2 for 7, and 2 catches) and Martin Kelly (2 catches). A great team effort giving CooroyEumundi U15’s their third consecutive win of the season. Playing at home, the undefeated U13’s received a blunt reality check from Maroochydore Green. Maroochydore elected to bat first and, despite a slow outfield, compiled a solid total of 137 with the loss of only 3 wickets. Cooroy-Eumundi’s run chase got off to a good start with opening pair Jack Lynch and Zac Murray retiring not out. This is where the good times ended though, as Maroochydore bowled a consistently good line and length and sent wickets tumbling quicker than the remaining batters could pad up! Within 23 overs, Cooroy-Eumundi were all out for just 85 runs delivering Maroochydore Green a resounding and well deserved victory. U12 Green won the toss and batted first against Tewantin-Noosa Lightening. A solid batting performance saw an opening stand of 58 between Henry Rudkin (24) and Lachie O’Sullivan (13), before Clancy Young (40) once again got in the runs. Steven Galea (35) and Matt Christensen (19) pushed the total to a formidable 193. In reply, TNT batted well but were restricetd to 128 with some tight and controlled bowling. Max Pascoe returned excellent figures of 3 for 35, in what was a superb team effort by all the lads. Away at Coolum, U12 White were unbeaten until this weekend. Batting first, they were not at their best, and despite Nathan Howarth’s 16no, the boys could only muster 2 for 96 off their 30 overs. In reply, Coolum were in trouble early, with Reilly Carroll taking out the stumps with the first ball of the innings, and Josh Plant once again in the wickets with 2 for 16. But it wasn’t enough, and the Thunder batted solidly to reach 3 for 145 at close, and a deserved victory. An unusually below par performance from the boys, with much to discuss at training this week!

COOROY RAG

Cooroy Dolphins are still in the swim Council to install a heat pump in the pool for all to use during the cooler months. In recent years, the chance to train through winter has meant strong growth in the club’s numbers and great results in regional competitions. It’s also been great for grass-roots involvement at the club with the pool Geoff Edwards and Megan Manners (sitting) are joined by the rest of the Cooroy Dolphins club members celebrating their recent success In the immortal words of Dory, ‘just keep swimming’. Recently, the Cooroy Dolphins had their annual Twilight Swimming Carnival, their largest fundraiser for the year. Incredibly, 24 clubs from the Wide Bay region attended, spanning from Bundaberg to Redcliffe. Held in picture perfect Spring conditions, the carnival gave 38 Cooroy Dolphin participants a great opportunity to give their best in a competitive environment. Encouragingly, many won medals against

www.cooroyrag.com.au

some of the bigger clubs on the coast. Cooroy Dolphins treasurer, Megan Manners said the carnival gave the Dolphins a great chance to showcase the swimmers and the club. “As a committee, we were overwhelmed by the support from some of our local businesses, sponsors and our parents of the club who gave so much time to make this carnival a success,” Megan said. One of those was Cooroy Community Bank of Bendigo

Bank, and Geoff Edwards was invited by the club to visit with the kids and share in their success. “We’re delighted to have supported the Dolphins for many years and this is just the latest opportunity to support the club. It’s just another way we continue to support the community that supports our Cooroy branch,” Geoff said. Back in 2012, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank partnered with Sunshine Coast

holding learn-to-swim sessions for all ages and providing swimming, fitness and health opportunities to the wider community. For more information about the Cooroy Dolphins Swimming Club or the Cooroy Pool, look them up on Facebook, go to cooroydolphins @gmail.com or call 0413 929 197.
