Xmas Feature ... 22-24 Pomona ............. 25-27 Congratulations to the over 200 Noosa District State High School graduates who celebrated the end of their high school days on November 14. It was all glamour and glitz with the boys looking dapper in their suits and the girls coiffed to perfection. It was a bit unfortunate that the heavens decided to open up with a torential downpour just as students began arriving at the school for the ceremony, but apart from a few runs in the spray tans most remained undaunted and unscathed and filled with enthusiasm for the future. Our Hinterland Rep is in! WITH the election now over, and the new Noosa Council getting ready to commence business as of January 1, hinterland business and community identity Sandy Bolton is thrilled to be one of the 6 successful candidates from the field of 19 to make it over the line in a nail biting finish. New Noosa Mayor, Noel Playford, will lead the new team of Sandy, Tony Wellington, Bob Abbot, Frank Pardon, Joe Jurisevic and Frank Wilkie. As the only female to form part of the new team, Sandy is very excited about her new role, and is

looking forward representing organisations and residents over the next 2 years. “The election experience was exhilarating as well as exhausting,” Sandy. “There was a fantastic community spirit between the Councillor candidates and their volunteers, with many new friendships and networks formed which will be of great benefit to our communities going forward. “The hardest part was not getting another female over the line. Hopefully at the next elections we will

have that opportunity. Sandy is now busy getting ready for January 1, and getting down to business. Prior to that date, Councillor elects cannot officially respond to residents’ concerns, however Sandy encourages community organisations, businesses and residents to contact her in readiness for her first official day on the job. Wimmers to relocate to old brickworks site

Peter Lavin with the designs for the new Wimmers Factory

PETER Lavin, owner of Wimmers and Cooroy Mountain Spring Water, is aiming to have the new Wimmers Softdrinks factory up and running on its new site by June 2014. Approval has been given by Sunshine Coast Council for the material change of use at the old PGH Brickworks site on Lake Macdonald Drive Cooroy, and construction will begin as soon as operational works are completed. Lavin said he was very happy with the support he has received from the community for the relocation project and predicts the move will help boost Cooroy’s economy. “The new factory has been designed to give us room to upgrade our equipment, which will allow us to run more efficiently and expand our operations,” Mr Lavin said. Another positive for the community is Mr Lavin’s offer of a large parcel of the land dedicated to community use and submissions will be reviewed within the next few weeks. Mr Lavin said the energy efficient design features of the $2.5m project, including landscaping, treatment of waste water and rain water runoff ensures minimal impact on the environment. A museum to house both PGH and Wimmers memorabilia has also been included in the plans with the expectation it will be a drawcard for tourists and visitors to the area. The clean up of the site has already begun on the site with thousands of bricks being donated to various organisations.

Hinterland Connect future in jeopardy

Private Housekeeping servicing the Sunshine Coast

Services

• weekly cleans • fortnightly cleans • spring cleans • bond cleans • builder cleans • office cleans • ironing

RECENT usage figures released by TransLink for the Hinterland Connect trial bus service have shown the service is failing to meet the benchmark set by the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Scott Emerson, putting its future in jeopardy. Half-funded by the Sunshine Coast Public Transport Levy, this service is a trial until 30 June 2014. Transport Strategy Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said Sunshine Coast Council’s original aim was to secure a permanent public transport option for the hinterland. “At this stage, bus patronage levels have not met Translink’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) which would ensure the continuation of the service—but they are close,” Cr Baberowski said. “The KPIs are based on passenger numbers, fares generated, distance travelled and the cost of the service. “Figures for August and September have shown they are slightly below the KPIs set for the Average Load and Value for Money benchmarks.”

Phone Rache 0413 876 166

Local division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said basically it comes down to getting more passengers on the bus. “For the Hinterland Connect bus service to continue, bus patronage levels must meet and exceed the KPIs identified by TransLink, consistently month after month—one good month won’t be enough,” Cr McKay said. “It’s up to the community to prove to TransLink they need this service and that it is viable. “Earlier this year, when TransLink was considering cancelling the service, the community rallied in support to ensure it continued—and they need to rally again, because the service is in real threat of being shut down. “Passenger numbers count—if we don’t get the passengers on board then this service will stop and there will no longer be a public transport option for the hinterland. “So take the opportunity to use this service, support this service and recommend it to your friends as this is your best chance of keeping it for the hinterland community.”

BRICKBATS to the bank teller here in Cooroy who didn’t wish to collate the small change I had brought in to exchange for bank notes. There was no other customer in the bank, just me. Her response was ‘we don’t do that!’. She did give me bags to collate the change into. When I pointed out that doing that myself would cause pain to my wrists that she saw were both splinted, she insisted that ‘we don’t do that!’. And yet, the week before, a different female teller did collate the change into bags - same scenario, just me, no queue! So what was the difference? I’d say it was good customer service vs bad customer service!

news Beware the Break Costs

Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy

THE economic climate, doom and gloom, shares are up, then down again. Large, well known companies declaring big losses... There’s no doubt that everyone’s financial situation is more “top of mind” at the moment. Since September 2008, we’ve seen official interest rates drop by 4.5%. These drops have been great for many home loan customers and it has provided relief for their household budgets. A 4.5% drop is significant, for example: If you had a home loan of $300,000 and you have seen this 4.5% reduction, the payments on your loan from September compared to now have probably dropped by close to $210 per week. Frustration is being felt by those on fixed rates. Break Costs can be costly. It’s important you talk to your bank about the break costs and enquire about your options as they can explain the cost to you. It almost seems methodical that people look to the banks to lay blame for problems in the economic community. “Bank bashing” can be almost categorised as a national pastime in Australia. But is it really justified? International banks and financial institutions around the world have not fared well as they have been operating in a less regulated banking

environment compared to Australian standards. They have also perhaps been lured into non traditional banking practices. These practices that now have proven unprofitable and sometimes unethical. While all this has been going on internationally our Australian banks have generally kept on following traditional banking practices, taking in deposits and then lending out those funds as home/investment loans. Conservative, but practices they would now be thankful for. Maybe we could be happy that our banks and consequently we (the customer) are not facing the same situations as our international banking colleagues! If you’d like to discuss any of this in any further detail, please contact me on 5447 7131 or geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

news Cream of the Christmas celebrations in Cooroy

COOROY RAG

WHEN it comes to the cream of the crop, Christmas in Cooroy is right up there in terms of festive season celebrations! The Christmas in Cooroy celebrations get a fantastic turnout of over 5,000 people

and they have the biggest program of FREE activities on offer, not to mention some really quirky and fun events that you just don’t see anywhere else! People from Hervey Bay to Brisbane and

across the Coast come back to the event year after year and it is growing in popularity as the word gets out about what a great event it is. “Christmas in Cooroy is unique because everything is free including rides, face painting, photos at Caravan of Smiles and the Santa visit. But while those things are attractive to people it is the wealth of unique entertainment and the terrific community atmosphere that really gets people excited,” explained event manager Danielle Taylor. The Bendigo Bank Street Parade is a big drawcard with around 30 floats decorated in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways. This year the theme is “Rock and Roll” and there are always lots of giveaways and lollies handed out into the crowds and people of

all ages are just amazed at how great the floats look. The Great Santa Race is a truly amazing spectacle with a crowd of Santa suit clad runners doing a roughly 300 metre sprint up the main street. There is a prize pool of $2,000 sponsored by Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group and while entry is $10 to compete in this you get a free Santa suit to run in and all the proceeds go to the Leukaemia Foundation. It is of course free to watch which is just as fun! The streets are decorated and there are more than 25 shops with window displays. You can vote for your favourite to win a $100 IGA voucher and get lots of great specials by scanning the QR codes on the windows. There is the Guardian Pharmacy Photo

Exhibition on display at the Butter Factory Arts Centre between the 6 December and 4 January. There will also be a smart phone photo competition and a Golden Ticket Promotion to win an ipad mini via The Cooroy App. Other highlights include the Poets Breakfast at the Cooroy Hotel, the Wimmers East versus West Tug of War, local band Smokin Mirrors, the Hinterland Christian Centre Choir, Uke Crazy People and a fantastic fireworks display sponsored by Cooroy Mountain Spring Water. Plus there are market stalls, food stalls and a bar. Christmas in Cooroy is on Saturday 7 December from 4pm and you can get the full program and all the information at www.christmasincooroy. com.au.

East & West Cooroy businesses battle it out

THE long running friendly feud between businesses on the east and west side of the Cooroy train tracks will again be officially waged

in the Wimmers East Versus West Tug of War at Christmas in Cooroy. “It is one of those quirky things about Cooroy that the town is

separated by the train line and there has been a long running joke about who is better East side or West side. “Two years ago a great

addition to the Christmas in Cooroy program was the East versus West Tug of War with the challenge quickly taken up by enthusiastic traders on both sides of the tracks. It is one of those quirky events that really suit Christmas in Cooroy and we were keen to add it to the program permanently. “Wimmers Soft Drinks have come on board as a sponsor and we know it is going to be even more exciting and fun this year,” said event Manager, Danielle Taylor. Last year there was a male and female heat with teams of eight. The Wimmers East Versus West Tug of War will be held at 6pm straight af-

ter the Bendigo Bank Street Parade. It should be a great spectacle and lots of fun to watch. So come down and give the traders your support by cheering them on in Apex Park on 7 December! Anyone interested in joining a team contact Andy Flitter from The Cooroy App for the East Side team on 0423 980 601 and for the West Side team contact David Manktelow from Mower & ATV on 5442 5999. Everyone is welcome, whether you own a business, work in a business or just want to support either the east or west side of town. Visit www. c h r i s t m a s i n c o o r o y. com.au.

Support student Braydon witnessed an older man collapse on the side of the road, while he was walking to school and he used his mobile phone to call for help. Braydon was able to provide accurate location details and he waited with the man until the ambulance arrived. “He needed help, so I did the right thing and phoned for the ambulance. Make hay while the sun shines By Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* MANY modern couples are choosing to delay marriage and children so they can establish themselves financially first. According to the new AMP.NATSEM Income and Wealth Report, Modern Family, the median age for women to tie the knot is now 28 years, while for men it is almost 30^. This is an increase of more than three years since 1991 when the median age to marry was 24.5 years for women and 26.7 for men. The new research has also found women are having their first baby later in life, with the median age for first-time mums now 28.9 years, up from 25.3 in 1981. This means it is now common for people to spend a number of years in the workforce before they embark on married life and starting a family. So how can young people make the most of their early earning years to set themselves up for a more secure financial future? Tips for young people to make hay while the sun shines and get ahead financially: 1. Get into the habit of saving – a good rule of thumb is to save around 10 per cent of your income. An online high interest savings account is a good place to stash your cash. 2. Salary sacrifice into super from an early age – the earlier you start, the larger your nest egg will be. Retirement might not be on your radar, but it’s a smart move to start salary sacrificing before you have too many financial responsibilities such as a mortgage and family. A financial planner can help you put a robust financial plan into action. 3. Be careful of debt – it’s difficult to build wealth if you’re drowning in debt. Mobile phones are a core part of young people’s social lives, but they can also be one of the biggest debt traps. Credit card debt and car loans are also common pitfalls.

4. Spend your money wisely – it’s tempting to blow your cash on designer clothes, a new car or going out. Sure, it’s ok to have some fun, but you need to make sure you are putting some of your money away for the future. One Saturday night out with friends could cost you as much as $200 by the time you add up the cost of dinner, drinks and a taxi home. And if you are doing that every week, that’s $800 a month! 5. Plan to get an early foot on the property ladder – start saving for a deposit for your first home as soon as possible as it can take a few years to get enough money together. 6. Get income protection – you wouldn’t drive your car out of the garage without insurance, but many young people leave the house each day without protecting one of their most important assets - themselves and their ability to earn an income. What would you do if the worst happened and you were unable to work due to illness or an accident? Remember, it’s much easier to get income protection while you are young and healthy. If cash flow is an issue, consider taking out income protection inside your super.

GREAT young minds have been hard at work at our local state schools these past few weeks. Those in the ‘affirmative’ took on those in the ‘negative’ in the annual Noosa District Debating Cup held at Noosaville State School held last week. Students representing Cooroy, Eumundi, Tewantin and Noosaville State Schools participated in a competition where round robin debates occurred on various subjects, such as whether it is best to holiday in Australia or overseas. The skills and the passion were on display for all to see during the finals held at Noosaville State School last Monday. For the record, Cooroy’s senior team and Noosaville’s junior team were crowned champions for 2013. In what has now become an annual event after the success of its inaugural year in 2012, the tournament proved to be a real hit with students from Grades 5, 6 and 7 finding a fun way to inspire debating with a little competitiveness

between the schools. Tournament coordinator, Sue Silburn said the Noosa District Debating Cup was a great success and is now a sought after title between the four schools and feels it will grow from strength to strength each year it’s held. “The kids have really embraced the annual Debaters Cup and we thank Bendigo Bank for their financial support of this event. It was with their help we were able to purchase medallions and the shiny new trophies for the junior and senior winners of the competition and provide each student who took part with a certificate of participation. I think all of us have been blown away by the standard of competition out there and we all had a lot of fun,” Ms. Silburn said. “We were delighted to add Cooroy State School to the competition this year and you can see by them taking out the senior title this year they have already put their stamp on the competition. The students and have worked

Mary Atkins pictured with Cooroy and Noosaville State School winning team representatives, Tahlia Burkett and Caley Dwyer really hard under the guidance of their coaches who then doubled as our adjudicators. I would really like to thank our guest adjudicators from the University of the Third Age whose expertise was invaluable. Debating is a great skill for the kids to have as they get older and we certainly have a few budding experts on our hands, but at the end of the day the tournament’s success is in the

enjoyment the students had in taking part,” she added. Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards said the bank is delighted about its continued involvement in sponsoring tournaments that develop students’ learning and sportsmanship. “We’re really proud to sponsor this competition and we were so impressed with the poise and delivery of so many

young debaters in the finals. Having public speaking novelist Mary Atkins there to speak with the kids was a real bonus too,” Geoff said. “This is just an extension of the great relationship between our Community Bank branches in Cooroy and Tewantin and all the schools represented and we look forward to offering our support for the Noosa District Debating Cup in 2014.” Geoff added.

Kevin and Valerie Kelly (developers) and Phil and Sam Hargrave (Wythes Real Estate) UNDER the banner of Ireland’s luckiest of charms, Cooroy’s newest housing estate Erindale Park is set to bring a little faith, hope, love and luck to the community. Drawing on their Irish heritage, project developers Kev and Val Kelly thought the rare and much sought-after four leaf clover would be the perfect symbol to represent the estate and provide a positive omen for the people who will soon live there. “We feel incredibly lucky to live in the Cooroy community and enjoy the friendly and laid-back lifestyle on offer here,” Mr Kelly said. “I can only hope to pass on a bit of our good fortune to others looking to make a similar move at Erindale Park.” ThinkAloud Creative Director, Chris Hall, who designed the Erindale Park brand, said the leaves of the four-leaf clover represented faith, hope, love and luck and would provide the perfect backdrop for the estate’s branding. In addition to the four-leaf clover, the brand aims to reflect the warmth of the Cooroy community and its connection to Noosa’s hinterland and beaches.

Wythes Real Estate Sales Representative Samantha Hargrave said “Cooroy is at the heart of the Sunshine Coast’s Hinterland region, and Erindale Park presents an exciting opportunity for people to find a new place to call home. “Construction is nearly complete on the first stage of the estate on Lake Macdonald Drive, comprising four 600 square metre lots, with lots starting in price from $195,000.” To celebrate the launch of the first stage of Erindale Park, the developers have launched a community competition which simply asks participants to explain - What do you love about Cooroy? In ten words or less, you will be in the draw to win 1 of 2 great prizes worth $500 each from local businesses Maison De Provence and the IGA Supermarket. For more information about this great competition, the Erindale Park estate and the Cooroy community please visit: www.erindalepark.com.au or contact Samantha Hargrave at Wythes Real Estate on 0417 750 507.

Extract of the speech given on Remembrance Day by Mr Jim Dunstan, OBE ON this day, 95 years ago, an Armistice was signed, and the Great War of 1914-1918 at last ended, bringing to a close a wasteful, cruel conflict which affected the lives, and the futures of a generation of young men, and of their wives, their children, their families, and their loved ones. The Armistice was signed at 11am, on the 11 th day, of the 11 th month, and the date was designated Armistice Day, to be celebrated each year, on that day, at the 11 th hour. It was tragically mistaken to be the war to end all wars. There have been other conflicts since then – World War 2, Korea, Vietnam, and peace-keeping operations in Timor, Iraq, Afghanistan – and Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day, to celebrate all these conflicts, rather than any specific day or campaign. War is the complete exercise in futility, misery, and waste, and sadly, it demands a tremendous cost in the lives of a nation’s youth, which is felt for generations. In World War 1,

Australia lost 60,000 men killed, and 150,000 injured, all on foreign soil, with Australia not under any direct threat. Our total population then was under 5 million. In World War 2, the scale of known casualties was horrendous. In the Russian campaign alone 27 million soldiers and civilians died – an average of 150,000 each day. It is estimated that 60 million people, three times the present popuation of Australia, were homeless. Through it all comes the message that there is no glamour in war, only savagery, dirt, misery, futility, frustration and sacrifice, all of which, especially sacrifice, is sometimes in vain. War cemeteries, and foreign fields, are full of the bodies of young men, and some women, on both sides, who died when their lives had not really begun, who were often at an age when they should have been at school, in Year 12, not buried in some foreign land. I grew up in those years between World

War 1 and World War 2, and I recall the sense of despondency, of hopelessness, among the older people of those times. Virtually every family had someone who had served. The returned serviceman was dulled by his experiences in the trenches, living in the mud, the filth, the rats, the fleas, the lice, the dead bodies of fellow soldiers, the constant shelling, the gas attacks, the merciless fighting with grenade, rifle, and bayonet. No sign of glamour or romance there. They say that war brings out the best in men, but it also brings out the beast in men. The Armistice brought an end to that barbaric killing, and the soldier returned to a country which was not the promised land fit for heroes. Then after another ten trying years, we had the Great Depression, a soul-destroying, humiliating catastrophe, which affected people of all ages. After ten yeas of the painful struggle to recover from that, came the Second World War. And after 6 years of

world wide conflict, came the VE and VP Armistices of the second war to end all wars. It had been an eventful 30 years. I spoke of the hopelessness which coloured that period between the wars, but that hopelessness was not in evidence after 1945. There was an air of celebration, of optimism, and a belief that there were brighter times ahead, a determination to build a better world, a better society, and to enjoy life while we were doing it. The ex-serviceman was far better cared for. And the nation recognised his contribution and his sacrifices. Repatriation services were steadily improved, and there was concern for the health of veterans. Credit for this must go to the sterling world of the re-invigorated RSL, and we now have a level of veterans’ care which is equal to any in the world. A major factor in recent years that has been deeply pleasing to the veterans is the increased interest and awareness, and partici-

pation of our young people in the celebration of ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day, and their appreciation of why those days should be recognised, not as times of sorrow and mourning, but as opportunities to pause and reflect and remember. We are sincerely grateful for that interest. Traditions have been built at great cost in human lives, by men who fought and died, who volunteered with no political or religious motivation, but to ensure that the freedom of our people was not lost. It is vital that the spirit of those traditions is preserved, and not allowed to wither and die from neglect. In the words of the famous American President Abraham Lincoln, “The world will little note, no long remember, what we say HERE, but it can never forget what they did THERE”. In conclusion may I make the observation from the acquired wisdom of my 95 years, that one thing we have learned from history is that we never learn from history.

news Wonderful contrasts in World of Wow Moments

COOROY RAG

‘A WORLD of Wow Moments’ is the latest fly-cruise-stay holiday from Worldwide Cruise Centres (worldwidecruisecentres.com.au). The name is appropriate because it’s hard to imagine a more varied and diverse exploration of the world in 49 days. Contrasts are phenomenal: from the ponies of the remote Shetland Isles to the urban bustle of downtown New York City; from the architecture and art treasures of Russia’s St Petersburg to the lapping of the waves in laid-back Charlotte Amalie, main town on St Thomas in the Caribbean. The holiday includes round-trip flights. You’ll fly from Sydney or Brisbane to Dubai and Europe on Emirates Airline, voted World’s Best Airline in the Skytrax awards this year and recipient of numerous other accolades for cuisine, inflight entertainment and overall service excellence. ‘A World of Wow Moments’ begins with stays in Dubai and Copenhagen and leads on with a leisurely 37-night Baltic/Iceland and transatlantic cruise aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Star. The cruise visits Copenhagen, Berlin, St Petersburg, Dublin, Scotland, Portugal and the US Virgin Islands, among other places, and the holiday finishes with three nights in central New York and two nights in Hawaii. ‘A World of Wow Moments’ costs from A$8999 per person twin share. It departs Australia on 8 September 2014 with an Emirates flight from Sydney or Brisbane to Dubai. A three-night stay in a three-star hotel, with daily breakfast, gives time to explore. Check out Dubai’s historic district, Deira, and stupendous shopping malls. Then jet on to Copenhagen for two nights in a three-star hotel to explore this city, home to Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark, formerly Mary Donaldson from Tasmania. Stroll the Tivoli Gardens. If you’re feeling energetic, try the Church of Our Saviour with its corkscrew spire. Then, board Norwegian Star and head for the port of Warnemunde in Germany, from where you can take an excursion to Berlin or arrange your own shorter trip to the delightful ancient city of Lübeck. The Estonian capital of Tallinn, a fairytale city with preserved medieval walls, cobbled squares and towers, comes next, followed by St Petersburg, Russia’s great imperial city and repository of art, where you’ll overnight aboard ship and stay for two days. On to Helsinki and Stockholm before disembarking in Copenha-

gen for another day in this delightful city before sailing on to Bergen in Norway, surrounded by seven mountains, seven fjords and the North Sea. One of Norway’s most beautiful towns, Alesund, ‘ comes next, before sailing to Reykjavik, capital of Iceland. Next port of call is Lerwick in Scotland’s Shetland Islands, with its grand Victorian houses and the region’s namesake little ponies. Take in the pure air and prepare for a day each in two of Europe’s finest cities: Dublin, Ireland’s Viking-founded capital; and the great Scottish metropolis of Glasgow. There’s plenty of time aboard Norwegian Star to create your own Wow Moments. Tuck into a classic juicy steak or choose from 14 delicious dining options ranging from Asian fusion to French Mediterranean. Sample nine bars and lounges, an extensive spa and the shipboard casino. Watch the sun go down from 14 decks above the ocean in the open-air Bier Garten. Try the state-of-the-art fitness centre, sports court, pools and hot tubs. Aboard this great ship, all shipboard main meals (excluding specialty restaurants) is included. So is most entertainment. Even gratuities are covered, so forget tipping. The cruise takes you on to exotic Ponta Delgada in the Portuguese Azores and across the Atlantic to balmy Charlotte Amalie, capital of St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. Disembark in Miami, America’s great Latin city, and jet north to New York for three nights at the Beacon Hotel (or similar) in New York. Plenty of time in the Big Apple, sometimes called the Capital of the World, to stroll Times Square, see Radio City Music Hall, enjoy Fifth Avenue shopping, the Broadway Theatre district, Central Park and Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Maybe lunch at one of the city’s iconic delis and sample a jazz bar. Your holiday isn’t over yet! Two nights in Hawaii, staying at the Ohana Waikiki East Hotel Honolulu, just minutes from the beach, break your trip back to Australia. Take a stroll or an open-trolley ride to royal Kapiolani Park, the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium. If you hit Honolulu’s shopping malls, you’re in luck: you’re flying back home with Hawaiian Airlines and they have one of the world’s most generous baggage policies. You can check in 32kg in economy class. For more information contact Cooroy Travel at the Wattle Street Complex, Cooroy or phone 5447 7088.

WE moved into a retirement village at Tewantin a few years ago for peace and security. That idea was shattered in the early hours of Monday 4th November, when I awoke at about 6am, went outside to my garden and was horrified to see my three beautiful garden pets had gone missing. One is my beloved “Mrs Patrick Campbell” a large coloured, life size metal pig. She was wearing chrome gumboots to match her chrome wings and chrome ears. She has a yellow stripe down her back, her left side is blue and her right side is red. She also has diamantes on her body. Another is “Pete, the randy red rooster”, resplendent in yellow comb, a red wing and a green wing. He was firmly anchored into the ground, with eight inch tent pegs so he would not fly away. Yet apparently he did. Also missing is “Sophie”, my blue ceramic cat, life size, given to me by a dear friend. I am horrified and disappointed in human nature, in the total lack of respect with regard to other people’s precious items. Neighbours reported a gang of children, roaming through the village the previous night after 11pm, not belonging to any retirees, probably casing the villas. A friend also lost a terracotta owl in those early hours. A stone statue of a woman was moved, but was obviously too heavy to carry, so she was left. If anyone sees my much loved garden pets, please report it to the police. There is a $100 reward for their return. Phone Helen 5447 1328.

Millicent Poulsen, nee Bechtel 1922-2013 AN era of a pioneering farm family in this district has come to an end with the passing of Millicent Poulsen. She led a remarkable and long life from Brisbane to the bush and then to Tewantin. From the middle of the twentieth century to the millennium, she lived with husband Ken on the Poulsen family farm at “Beechwood” west of Cooroy on the Mary River. Born on April 9, 1922, the eldest of 3 children, brother Len was 14 months younger while her sister, Nancye was born 8 years later. Both Len and Millicent went to Buranda State School where Millicent became a Brownie. After a scare at school during the polio epidemic, was sent to the Church of England Girls School in Warwick to become a boarder. She loved the chance to become a Girl Guide there. It was in Warwick that Millicent got her nose broken playing softball. When she asked to see a doctor, she was told “What’s wrong with a broken nose?” So she learned to live with her bent nose. Returning to Brisbane, she went to Somerville House. Millicent loved to draw. She did adult painting classes in her later years. By the time she finished school, the Second World War started. Millicent joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment and the Country Women’s Association. Her membership of the CWA was to be lifelong. Later she signed up for the Australian Army Medical Women’s Service. Her first task was to tend to troops bivouacked at the Exhibition Centre. She said the “poor fellows” hated their vaccination needles and some fainted. She sometimes thought: “How will they fare when they have to face live shooting?” She nursed at the Greenslopes Military Hospital then went back and forth from Brisbane

to Townsville, tending to the sick and wounded on troop trains. After the war, she did two years nursing, in Mackay, and then served as the boarders’ matron at the Moreton Bay High School. Millicent met her future husband, Ken Poulsen, through his younger sister, Dorothy, who was a classmate of hers at Somerville House. Ken was of Danish and English descent. Millicent and Ken discovered a mutual love of dancing and became dance partners. When Ken got around to asking Millicent to marry him, she said “Perhaps.” In one of her oral histories, Mum said: “Ever since I had been at boarding school, I thought country life would be wonderful.” They married September 22, 1950. They moved to the Poulsen’s family farm on the Mary River. It was on the telegraph line and old Cobb & Co. stagecoach route from the Gympie goldfields to Brisbane. The area near Mt. Tuchekoi was initially known as “Little Denmark” because of all the Danish settler-farmers there. The newly-weds had to stay with Ken’s mother and brother for six months, in the grand old Queenslander homestead at the end of a palm tree-lined drive. Millicent’s life spanned an era from biplanes to supersonic jets, telegraph to mobile phones and computers. She was able to move with the times with some, if not all, of this technology. She “wanted to be remembered as an environmentalist, a conservationist and a recycler.” She was a talented archivist kept all sorts of newspaper clippings over decades. During drought times on the farm, we would conserve water usage in an unusual way. The bathwater was “recycled” by using only one tub for the whole family. Mum as the cleanest would go first, then Neil, myself, and finally

Dad as the dirtiest in from the farm work. Only then it would be bucketed onto the plants in the garden! I’m sure this was a common story among farm families but our mother was certainly an early conservationist, well before the term became fashionable. Millicent had a rebellious streak and specifically asked for the Eureka flag to adorn her coffin. A close friend recalls meeting Millicent when she first took up a block out at Carters Ridge. “Mrs Poulsen seemed a member of the Blue Rinse set but she shocked me and her younger friends by announcing: “Marriage should be like joining the army. You should sign up for a number of years and then review it!” However, she stayed with Ken until he passed away and then kept the farm going for over a year after. And she had her wedding band on to the very last. The farm “Beechwood” was carved out of scrubland from part of Kenilworth station under three generations of the Poulsens. This was from land that local Aborigines had roamed for millennia. Millicent was part of opposing the planned destruction of an Aboriginal midden, a waste pile from corroborees, when the main roads department decided to straighten the old Bruce highway past the farm. In later years, she became a vocal opponent of the state government’s plan to dam the Mary River at Traveston Crossing. She displayed a “No Dam” badge on her hat and encouraged people to read the booklet on the issue. In her twilight years, Millicent’s sight became more and more affected by macular degeneration, making it more difficult to discern peoples’ faces and their expressions. Actually, Millicent could never be accused of having tunnel vision. She kept up a wide

interest in the state of the world. She continued to expand her knowledge of natural history as well. Not surprisingly, she was much in demand as part of her trivial pursuits team at Carramar. After her retirement from the farm, she said she wanted to visit all the capital cities of Australia. One of her first trips was to Hobart. Then she set off to do a few more of the trips she always wanted, especially New Zealand and Norfolk Island. Before her eyesight was too far-gone, she and Lois, another good friend from the farm days, set off on a trip around Australia. Millicent passed away peacefully on October 3, in her room at Carramar. Millicent will be missed by her family and many friends from her school and nursing days in Brisbane to the half century on the farm at Carters Ridge, to her retirement years in Hibiscus and her eight years among the residents, carers and nurses at Carramar Aged Care.

Krookid Kings mixing it up NOOSA District State High School’s Krookid Kings won the ‘Judges Encouragement Award’ at the Remix Hip Hop Competition last Saturday. Dance teacher Clare Gurnett accompanied the Krookid Kings to Southbank to complete in the massive interschool competition. “They did a fabulous job performing, despite injury and illness, and were up against fierce competition from 18 other crews. The event had a really inclusive and supportive atmosphere and I think it was really eye opening for the students to see the standards of many schools who are veterans of the comp,” Ms Gurnett said.

The Krookid Kings is comprised of Noosa District State High School students from a variety of year levels and includes Georgia Leslie, Courtney Melinz, Tylani NgataiStokes, Morgan Emmett, Maddy Hayward, Enya Jasinski, Jesse Gale and Jacob Gibson. The winners of the three divisions were Redlands Community Crew, Rochedale SHS and Marsden SHS. The ‘Judges Encouragement Award’ was a fitting acknowledgement for the Krookid King’s efforts at their first ever interschool event. A highlight for the girls of Krookid King’s was brushing shoulders with Academy of Brothers of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ fame.

Kick up your heels at Cooroy Chamber Christmas Party

Lighting up Cooroy DECEMBER 6th @ 6pm is the date for the official turning on of the town's Christmas lights

THE Cooroy Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Christmas Party on Wednesday 11th December at the Cooroy Hotel. “The Christmas Party is always a great night with relaxed entertainment and the opportunity to kick up your heels on the dance floor. It’s a time when we all get together and just enjoy each other’s company.” “You don’t have to be a Chamber member to come along. Some people use it as their staff Christmas Party or to entertain clients or just to catch up with some of the people in town that they are sometimes too busy to stop and socialise with. It is a very relaxed evening and we have Smokin’ Mirrors Duo playing as well as a photo booth to capture some candid fun on the night,” said President, Danielle Taylor. Tickets are $35 for members and $40 for non-members which includes a two course meal and entertainment. Booking and pre-payment is essential by Friday 6 December. Bookings can be made with Tania Stewart at Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy or email bookings@cooroy.com.au or online at www.trybooking.com/68838 Date Claimer: Wednesday 11th December at 6.00pm at Cooroy Hotel.

Shop locally this Christmas SHOPPING locally saves you money: Bigtown shops have done a good job of convincing us all that sole traders = expensive, but the evidence just isn’t there to back this up. If you add in travel, parking costs, fees to transport larger items home and customer time, the overall cost is often much greater. Shopping locally retains our communities: People don’t like losing shops and services in small towns and villages but don’t equate this to how they spend their money. Shops will only survive if customers spend locally – so if you want a vibrant town centre, where people can socialise as well as shop, we need to shop locally. Shopping locally creates jobs: Shops and businesses in our villages create local employment and self employment. These people in turn spend in the local economy. Evidence shows that for every $10 spent in an independent shop, $25 is generated for the local economy compared to $14 spent in multinationals. Local independent shops invest more in our communities: Sole traders and independent stores are proportionally more generous in their support for local charities, carnivals, schools and community events. So supporting local shops means a financial return for our community.

Ingredients 340g unsalted butter 340g moist brown sugar 6 eggs 340g raisins 340g sultanas 450g currants 150g almonds (whole or chopped) 170g mixed peel 115g glace cherries 340g plain flour 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon mixed spice grated rind and juice of 1 lemon 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 1 tablespoon treacle (or golden syrup) 5 tablespoons brandy/cognac/rum - whatever you prefer, and plenty to feed the cake in the lead up to Christmas Directions Firstly prepare the tin. Using a 22-25cm tin, brush the sides with melted to butter to lightly grease. Line the sides of the pan with 2 layers of baking paper that reaches 5 cm’s above the edge. Line the base with 3 layers of baking paper. Finally, wrap the outside of the pan with 3 layers of newspaper, reaching just above the baking baking paper, securing with kitchen string. This cake will be in the oven for a long period of time, and this will prevent your cake from buring during it’s long, hot siesta. Turn on the oven to 160 degrees celcius. In a very large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until it’s light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, until you have a smooth, rich batter. In a separate large bowl, mix your dry ingredients (dried fruit, nuts, flour and spices) together well. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed butter, with lemon rind and juice, treacle and chosen alcohol. Combine thoroughly, adding more alcohol if required to gain a dropping consistancy.

Cooroy I Eumundi I Tewantin

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR

Fill tin with cake batter ensuring there are no air pockets and the top of the batter is flattened out. Place in the oven on a mid-low rack for 2 hours, then drop the temperature to 150 degrees celcius for another 1 - 1.5 hours. Check the cake regularly in the second run. If your oven runs quite hot, you may find it’s ready in the first half hour at 150 degrees celcius. It’s cooked when it has a lovely golden colour across the top of the cake and springs back when lightly touched in the centre. Cool cake in tin, and once cool splash extra alcohol across top of cake and leave until all absorbed. Remove and it’s ready to eat! To store, wrap cake in 3 layers of baking paper, and double layers of foil. I feed my cake once a week from here right through until Christmas, simply opening her up, and splashing 30mls or so across the cake at a time. We love having this cake with custard, vanilla double cream, or just on its own with a cup of tea.

The race that stopped Pomona

IT is known as the race that stops the nation but it is certainly true to say it stopped Pomona. The Mel- bourne Cup was celebrated in fine style at the historic Majestic Theatre by around 70 enthusiastic pa- trons, mostly women but with some men in attendance as well. It was a full program with a fashion parade, sweeps, lucky door prizes, a competition for the best outfit, a wonderful lunch and, of course, watching the big race on the big screen. Chef, Brad Webb, and his team did a great job in serving a delicious meal starting with a range of tasty finger food before moving on to a superb roast chicken meal, a dish so often considered an essential part of Cup viewing. A selection of sweets was served with coffee to round

off yet another great dining experience at Valentino’s restaurant at the Majestic. Volunteers deftly organised a selection of sweeps to add some interest to the outcome of the Cup for those punters without a serious investment in the race. And if you missed out on the winner, there were many lucky door prizes on offer to keep people smiling. Fashion is almost as important as the race on Cup day and it was no different here in Pomona. The fashion parade featured the glamorous and versatile fashions from the La Mode de Fabienne bou- tique in Pomona. Fabienne and Frances did a fabulous job in selecting a range of outfits for four local vol- unteer models. The parade highlighted the comprehensive range of clothing and accessories available at this fabulous boutique right here in Pomona. Casual outfits, a diverse range of

elegant selections for your active socialising schedule through to outfits for those special occasions were all on display and can be found at Fabienne’s. And to top off the day there was prize for the best dressed person. Fabienne and Francis were called on to bring their astute professional judgement to bear on the important issues of colour coordination, style and cut. The prize for the best outfit went to Adele McClure of Pomona, in a stunning spring outfit with a matching pink hat. Who knows, next year maybe one of the gentlemen will enter. What a great event for Pomona and many thanks to Robyn Jones, Brad Webb and the entire team who worked so hard to enable others to enjoy such a lovely afternoon. Let’s hope that the 2014 Cup Day will be even bigger and grander at the Majestic.

pomona Kids create ultimate theatre experiment

COOROY RAG

THE Mary Valley Artslink theatre in technology project has taken on 18 young people from the region to collaborate and create their very own technological experiment. Kids are filming projects and exploring new ideas to create illusions that confront reality. The ability to create a scene and ultimately discard it for a new and better idea has encouraged greater confidence and acceptance within the group. Next experiment involves bringing imagination to life through ‘3D motion capture’ technology. John Haag’s Theatre of Animation has enabled interaction with this type of technology for perhaps the first time in Queensland. This is the technology used by sports medicine to improve performance and Hollywood blockbusters to create animated characters like Gollum from Lord of the Rings. The suit detects movement which can be projected onto a screen and be used to animate people and characters. Dinosaurs being a favourite! John Haag when considering this project noted, “It’s about exposing the

kids to possibilities, because we’re taking technology and apps and using them in a way they weren’t intended. In theatre there’s endless techniques and conventions stretching back thousands of years and shelves of books on proven workshop activities for any genre.” “This type of work shop has no history of precedents to fall back on and it’s using cantankerous unforgiving technology that wasn’t designed with theatre in mind. This project is about giving the kids exposure to experimentation where there is no formula for success and no guaranteed outcomes.” The project will culminate on November 30 at 7pm at Kandanga Hall with a theatrical creation by young people using storytelling and technology as their vehicle. COORAN State School has always been known to embrace our gifted and talented students. This year, many of our students have been part of an array of enrichment programs offered in the area. Three of our students have made a grand entrance into The Quest competition finishing second place in Mathematics and second in Humanities and finishing fourth in Science, securing a spot in the final in Brisbane. Luna Morrow (year 5), Finlay Jones (year 6) and Jarrod Archdall (year 6) entered the competition for the first time and blitzed the opposition. Using teamwork and leadership skills, the students quested their way through three problem solving scenarios. The Quest is presented by Brainways Edu-

cation in conjunction with Griffith University and provides students with complex topics which extend and enrich these gifted students. Working with the Periodic table, tackling the multifaceted characters in Shakespeare and running their own Hot Dog stand, these students rose to the challenge and impressed the judges with their fresh and imaginative approach to the theme of Illusion and Reality. Challenging student boundaries, stretching minds and gaining an understanding of a student’s own academic capacity is a key part of being a student at Cooran State School. Next year Cooran will send more students on the quest for academic excellence.

POMONA

New President for Pomona Meals

HARDWARE

OPEN 7 DAYS ROTARY Club of Cooroy has awarded Chaplain Paulette Gee of Pomona Primary School their Pride of Work Award 2013 for her tireless efforts in helping Rotary continue to develop their Early Act Club at the school. The club has been in operation for four years. Paulette has been instrumental in helping to keep the club active throughout these years. Under supervision of its parent club Rotary, Early Act Club works in many areas of service. Areas include school community, the community of Pomona and beyond and international communities. Early Act Club has fundraised this year for many charities including the Hear and Say Centre for deaf and hearing impaired children. the Cancer Foundation, aid abroad organisations as well as their own school chaplaincy program. Projects have included a community Car Wash Day, Odd Socks Day, Loud Shirt Day, Cupcake Day and the collection of blankets and towels for the RSPCA. There is just one more project left for 2013 and that is to make Christmas gifts for those rehabilitating in Cooroy’s Eden Hospital over the festive season. For what’s left of this school term Chappy Paulette and her loyal and hard working band of volunteers and generous donors from the Uniting Church and Rotary Club of Cooroy will continue to service brekky on Thursday and Friday mornings for any child who is hungry when they arrive to school. “Some mornings we serve 50 children multigrain toast with vegemite or honey, bananas and Milo,” says Chappy Paulette who knows that many children have breakfast at home but it can be so early that by the time they get to school, these growing children can be hungry again. And then there are times when everyone is running late for whatever reason, the brekky team is there for the children. “Not only are we filling tummies, we are often filling minds with positive conversations too. The area around our hall kitchen has become quite the gathering place from between 8 and 8.30.” says Chappy. When asked to speak at the Rotary presentation night Chappy Paulette, as she is affectionately known to just about everybody in Pomona, not only the children, said: “It was entirely unexpected. Imagine getting an award for something you do naturally because you love people. It was a wonderful surprise, one that I will cherish.” The Early Act Club and all volunteers embrace the Rotary slogan “Making a Difference, to someone else’s life”. And make a difference they will during 2014 with the many ideas that are rolling out of the group every week.

AT the recent Pomona Meals on Wheels AGM well known local businessman and community champion Stephen Hilditch was elected President for the next twelve months. Mr Hilditch said that he was happy to head up a wonderful organisation like Meals On Wheels that provides such an important service to the hinterland areas of Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran, Kin Kin, Boreen Point and Eumundi. For a couple of months now Mr Hilditch has been helping in the, well equipped, Meals On Wheels kitchen and has seen first hand the great work that the volunteers do and the delicious meals that they prepare. Mr Hilditch explained that the provision of meals is not just for the elderly but for anybody who is perhaps recovering from a serious accident or illness and is unable to adequately look after themselves. He indicated that Meals On Wheels would like more clients and definitely more volunteers who could lend a hand for a couple of hours a week or month on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning. Help is needed in the kitchen, administration and also delivery. Enquiries can be made to the office at Pomona on 5485 1777. We would love to hear from you.

Maths tournament success for Pomona INDOOR & OUTDO OR

Kody Vermeulen, Alex Lemon, James Stacey, Juliet Bias and Cian Jones. THE Pomona State School Mathematics Tournament Teams have done themselves and their school proud with recent successes in two district competitions. At the Noosa District Mathematics Olympiad held at Tewantin State School last term, one of Pomona’s talented Year 7 teams won their year level, with the Year 4 team achieving second place in their year level. Two year 7 teams and a year 6 team from Pomona then went on to further success at the larger Sunshine Coast Mathematics Tournament held at Lake Kawana last month, against stiff competition from forty other public and private schools across the Sunshine Coast. Pomona’s year 7A team gained overall third place at this competition and were the best performing year 7 team from a public school. These great results reflect positively on Pomona State School’s teaching standards and commitment to developing a love of mathematics in its students, particularly through the “Enrich-e-Matics” Program, offered from Year 3 to nominated students through the school’s Enrichment Program.

Committed to using local produce Dhom and Spencer (Dohms Kitchen) are committed to using as much local produce as possible, much of it grown in their own garden. Through their time at the Noosa Farmers Market they have also established valuable relationships with many of the producers at the market. The fresh green pepper season has just finished. “With the

onset of the summer rains we expect to receive the first Japanese Moso bamboo shoots from Jon at Cooran Bamboo”, says Spencer. “This is one of the most prized bamboo varieties which we use in salads, soups, stirfries and curries. We hope to harvest wild ginger, holy basil, betel leaves, snake beans, choko tips and round Thai eggplant from our

own garden in the coming weeks for our weekly specials. Later in the season we will have winged beans, long green and pea eggplants, the later shooting bamboo varieties, green mangoes and Thai guavas”. The roast duck dishes are legendary at Dhoms Kitchen. Only fresh organic ducks are use from Bendele Farm in

Kilkivan which are marinated and roasted in-house. During the local lychee season Spencer makes one of their house specialties: roast duck curry with Cooroy lychees and cherry tomatoes. Dhoms Kitchen only uses Australian seafood. “We are fortunate to have Jason and Alison (another friendship forged through the Noosa

Farmer’s Markets) from Spanner Crabs Noosa to look after our seafood needs”, notes Dhom. “We use a single trawler from up north that supplies us with tiger and ocean king prawns”. On New Year’s Eve Dhoms Kitchen will present a 5 course set menu. The price is $50 per person and includes corkage. Bookings are essential.

health Advanced Physio Clinic opens in Maple Lane

COOROY RAG

AFTER years of treating the local Cooroy and outlying communities, Tim Robinson has opened new purpose-built premises in Maple Lane, Cooroy. The new Advanced Physio Clinic has the latest equipment to accelerate the rehabilitation and recovery of patients with injuries. In partnership with Anytime Fitness Advanced Physio patients will be able to use state of the art exercise equipment for injury management. “My goal is to help anyone, regardless of age or injury, get back to their chosen activity as quickly as possible and be able to continue as long as possible,” Tim says. Tim Robinson is an experienced sports physiotherapist who has worked with elite athletes from a variety of sports, as well as international teams like the All Blacks and NZ ski team. He has also worked with the Waikato Chiefs in the Super 15 and has over 25 years of experience working with sports injuries. After graduating from Otago University he was fortunate enough to work with world renowned physiotherapist Brian

Mulligan. Brian’s passion for the profession and attention to detail has left an indelible mark on Tim. “We must empower patients to take responsibility for management of their injuries and stay pain free,” says Tim. Tim is a registered PGA golf rehab specialist and is able to perform swing analysis and utilise his knowledge of bio mechanics and strength training to help assist the golfer to both enjoy the game and look after their body. He has also lectured in sports medicine and is currently involved in cycling injury research and consults for the online website. He also is a keen cyclist. Tim also specialises in complex case management. He has trained in Craniosacral release through the Upledger Institute and Myofascial release technique through the Barnes Institute in the USA. Both of these techniques can be very effective in the treatment of chronic pain conditions such as Fibromyalgia and CFS syndrome. He also has post graduate qualifications in spinal manipulation. Tim and his family

have been living and working in Cooroy for seven years. His wife and two children love the Sunshine Coast hinterland and the environment that allows for such a great way of life. Tim and his staff look forward to caring for the local community from their new practice. There are flexible appointment times to cater for all working hours. Fore more information or an appointment phone 5447 7670.

Growing pains can be a real pain GROWING pains are a very real phenomenon. Young bodies can grow at an alarming rate and sometimes these growth rates can lead to very real and painful conditions. So when should you get serious about a growing pain? Basically if the pain lasts for longer than a few weeks then go off for a check up and certainly if the pain limits your child’s activity or sporting levels. There are a couple of common growth injuries. Osgood Schlatters occurs at the attachment of the patella tendon onto the

lower leg bone (tibia). The bones grow longer at a quicker rate than the muscles and tendons can lengthen and so a damaged area occurs at the joining of the two. A similar situation can occur at the bottom of the knee cap and also where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel (Sever’s syndrome). All these conditions can be very painful and restrictive. Physiotherapists’ help by settling the pain and inflammation, stretching and releasing the offending tight muscles, advise about activity levels and teach

taping techniques that help with return to sport and normal activities. Spinal regions of children are also subjected to the affects of growth spurts. Correct posture, strengthening exercises and advice on back care will definitely help with those aching younger backs. So if the youngsters of your household continually complain about their aches, take note – there is help at hand. Bring them in to see the qualified staff at Hinteractive Physio and take the pressure off those growing bodies. Ph: 5442 5556.

Men’s health peer education – new initiative at Cooroy RSL sub branch A MEN’S health education program, implemented by a MHPE Volunteer who has been trained by the Department of Veteran Affairs is being held on Monday, December 2 at 10am in the Cooroy RSL Club. The reason men have been targeted is men are reluctant to talk about their health issues or issues generally. They are less likely to seek medical assistance or see their GP when needed. The meetings are get togethers where Vets can gather in a non-invasive, relaxing atmosphere. Over a coffee or beer, like-minded people can have a chat with other vets who most

likely have the same problems or difficulties as they do or as some do. They can participate in cooking classes; go on outings; get together in a Men’s shed environment; go on fishing trips. The list goes on. There are a lot of very dedicated MHPE volunteers doing wonderful work for the Veteran community. The local MHPE volunteer is Terence Charles who is also a Welfare Officer with the Cooroy RSL Sub Branch. As a newly trained MHPE volunteer, he needs your help to get this kick started, so go along for a coffee and a chat.

Make fitness a social event FOR those of us who find motivation a little lacking when the topic of exercise comes up, turning fitness into a social event might help you reap both motivational and health benefits. Whether you join in a class in a gym or an outdoor bootcamp, or simply have a training buddy, there are many benefits to exercising with a group. If you work out with friends, accountability is a great motivator. If you don’t show up, you’ll be letting someone else down. Encouragement from an instructor or your workout buddies can be a key factor in keeping you on track. Remember that it feels good to give a compliment, too, so pay it forward. Another plus is the social aspect of group exercise. You can make friends with similar interests! One of the most important reason

to train in a group is because it’s fun. You’ll laugh, you’ll sweat, you’ll work hard and in no time you’ll be finished and feeling ready to face the world. It’s definitely more fun when you work out together. Group training can save you money too. There is no doubt that a personal trainer can help you achieve much better results in your exercise regime than going it alone. They can ensure you are using proper technique, help motivate you and keep you focussed. But for some the cost of a personal trainer is still outside their budgetary constraints, which is why Make a Difference Health & Fitness have introduced their new group sessions. “Our group sessions are still small with a maximum of six people at a time in our air

conditioned private studio. Plus you’ll be exercising with other people trying to achieve the same things as you are so you can really be a cheer squad for each other. You get the benefits of working with a personal trainer but at a reduced cost. We can cater for all fitness levels and will tailor your workout to your level of fitness and goals. Plus I believe in making exercise fun so you’ll be more likely to continue to exercise. Clients can be assured that we don’t have a boot camp mentally here at all,” said personal trainer, Lee Smith. Make a Difference Health & Fitness is located in Cooroy and group sessions are $12.50pp for a one hour session. Ph Lee on 5442 6179, 0407 597 748.

A needle by any other name As you may know, Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice dating back thousands of years. It involves the insertion of thin solid needles into specific points on the body to improve health and treat illness and is suitable for almost every health condition. Acupuncture offers a unique approach to health and well being with the ability to treat a wide range of conditions from musculoskeletal to mental health. Dry needling on the other hand is a process which involves inserting an acupuncture needle into a trigger point and is typically used to treat the pain associated with injuries. A trigger point is a tender spot on a tight band of muscle which causes pain when pressed or squeezed. Often those who train

in dry needling (also known as trigger point acupuncture) learn this process over a few days which is enough time to gain a rudimentary understanding of how to ‘needle the point that hurts’ and perhaps offer short-term relief. The increasing prevalence of the term ‘dry needling’ has created some confusion of late. Acupuncture practice incorporates many different needling techniques and a variety of these may be required to gain the best results. Dry needling refers to just one of these techniques and if you’re only having ‘dry needling’ you are missing out on most of what a registered acupuncturist has to offer. While acupuncture is considered very safe in the hands of well-trained practitioners, ‘dry nee-

Geoff Edwards is joined by Nikki Andrinopoulos, Karina Honeywell and some Grade 1 students from Cooroy State School at the Life Ed Van HAVE you ever wondered what that large caravan with the picture of a large giraffe is doing parked outside our schools? Well as so many of our local kids know, the giraffe’s name is Harold and the van is the Life Education Van. It provides our kids with drug and health education and empowers one million young Australians each year to make safe choices. Life Education was established 30 years ago to teach children ways to keep their bodies healthy and to equip them with the skills to make appropriate choices and a way of learning to stay secure in potentially unsafe situations. It’s a non-profit organisation, which operates in close partnership with our local schools and communities and relies on student fees and local community funding to meet costs. That’s where Bendigo Bank has helped out by subsidising the program. Now in its sixth year of sponsorship, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank offsets the program costs that is professionally designed and based on extensive research. On a local level, Cooloola-Noosa Life Education Association Inc. was formed in 1995 and from those humble beginnings with very little backing; more than 7,500 children from prep to Year 7 visited the van in 2012, starting at Chatsworth State School in Cooloola right through to Yandina State School. As many locals already know, the van also visits schools throughout the Noosa area at this time of year. In 2013, 22 schools and around 7,000 children have accessed the program to date, with an anticipated 8,000 children expected by year’s end. Each session is presented by educators who are fully qualified teachers and

Page 32 - Cooroy Rag, November 27, 2013

have undergone additional training in the area of health and drug education. Co-ordinator, Niki Andrinopoulos sees the program as an essential component of every child’s education. “As a primary school teacher of 21 years, I see Life Education as an integral part of a child’s time at school. In the younger grades we aim to teach children about their body and how it works. Our younger programs cover topics such as safety (including syringe safety), the importance of healthy eating and exercise, litter awareness, how to access emergency services, sun safety, friendships and bullying. “We receive support from the councils in Cooloola and the Sunshine Coast, and wonderful community organisations such as Bendigo Bank. Geoff Edwards and his team in Cooroy have been marvellous in their support for so many years now. We’re also blessed by the generosity of our wonderful volunteers. Without their support the program could not be subsidised and wouldn’t be accessible for many children in our region,” Ms. Andrinopoulos said. Classes from Years 5-7 cover topics such as the proper and safe use of medical drugs, smoking and alcohol and cyber safety awareness. In future, it’s hoped that enough funds can be raised to be able to introduce the high school program in our area. Ms. Andrinopoulos went on to say that once children have reached the senior classes, the aim is to have developed a sound understanding of their body and well being, so that they understand how special and truly unique they are. Life Education classes also provide a free parent information session for each school.

FEATURES: 10 minutes to Noosa River, power to 4 sites, 3 phase available, creek, dam & native riparian buffer, fully fenced, colorbond shed, chook pen, park like acreage under Mt Cooroy, native timbers, rainforest & palm oasis, native fauna and birdlife, absolute privacy, stunning views Your new property has had all the hard work done! 33+ acres of park like acreage where the sellers choose to mow instead of slash. As you enter the property from the private no thru laneway you are drawn to the views. With Mt Cooroy as the backdrop, there is a feeling of open space and absolute seclusion. Imagine walking out of your new home to this every day! Breakfast on the terrace, lunch at the oasis, sundowners and dinner on the deck? From the elevated house site options you have an overview of almost all

of the property. Interspersed between the established tall native timbers are pockets of botanical plantings. At the center, an incredible palm oasis with power in situ makes a fabulous outdoor entertainment area. Cocktails whilst the young ones play cricket or football? With quality fencing on the perimeter boundaries, a gentle creek flows along the western and southern sides protected by a native riparian buffer dotted with occasional rainforest growth. Power and a substantial colorbond shed have also been installed to store all your equipment needs as well as a Chook Hilton: fresh eggs daily! With 120m elevation on the Tinbeerwah Plateau you will enjoy the cooling summer breezes flowing in from the Pacific and you are only a short drive down the hill to the Noosa River restaurant precinct and on to Hastings Street and Main Beach. The current owners have purchased another home so the joy of creating a spectacular residence on this very private estate now lies in your hands. Bring your architect, bring your builder and call me for detailed land plans, aerial photography and contour maps. We are going to auction onsite on December 14 at 11am as the seller would like this wrapped up in time for Christmas. Inspections are Saturday from 10am to 11am until auction day, otherwise by private appointment. Phone David Lafferty, 0410 445 918 - Hinternoosa, 5447 7000. Price: Auction on-site, Saturday 14th December @ 10.30am.

sport Qld paddleboard representative

COOROY RAG

NOOSA District State High School Year 12 student Lachie Lansdown represented Queensland in the national paddle board championships at the Gold Coast last weekend and was awarded two runner-up prizes

in the long distance division. Lachie recently returned from a successful World Championships held in Hawaii, where his team won the team division. Lachie’s team finished the 52 kilometre paddle from Molokai to Oahu in 5 hours and 40 minutes, under very trying conditions with large surf and dangerous rips. “The world record is around 4 hours, but that is during good conditions,” Lachie said. Lachie will complete next year in Nicaragua, South America next year at the ISA World Stand Up Paddle and Paddleboard World Championships. Training is something Lachie undertakes every day except Sunday and he takes it all very seriously. “Training is worth it. It obviously works,” Lachie said. Training involves swimming laps for 2 hours a session, two paddleboard sessions, weights at the gym, kayaking and a 4 hour super Saturday session, without breaks. Lachie said anyone interested in the sport should do what he did and just, “get out in the waves and join a surf club”. The Noosa Surf Club will send four of its members to the world championships in 2014, including Lachie.

THEY say that Rugby is the game they play in heaven Well, Eumundi may not quite be heaven, but on a crisp winter morning you can almost see it from the lush, grassy hill at the Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union ground. Located at the Eumundi Showground, the Dragons Lair is a fantastic place to watch the enthusiastic, energetic juniors battle it out for game day supremacy during the Junior Rugby season. The Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union Club has called the Eumundi Showground home for 6 years and each year the club is growing its member base as more ‘wannabe Wallabies’ discover the friendly, fun and family atmosphere of the Dragons club. The club is fortunate to have a dedicated team of volunteer coaches that are guided in the latest coaching techniques for the modern Rugby game by the very experienced hand of Doug Toms. Doug is well known in the Junior Rugby Union circle here on the Sunshine Coast but his coaching experience reaches as far afield as the UK. Doug and the coaching team are focused on providing a training platform for the juniors that teaches correct technique, safe playing practices

and encourages good spirited competitiveness whilst still maintaining the ‘fun and enjoyment’ factor. This was recognised by Sunshine Coast Junior Ruby Union who awarded the club two ‘Spirit of Rugby’ awards during the 2013 season. Despite being a relatively small club compared with others on the Sunshine Coast, the Eumundi Dragons are very proud of the achievements of their junior players and especially so when player, Joel Kerr was this year selected to play at the State Primary School U12 Rugby Union Championships. The Dragons are very grateful for the support they receive from the community and are delighted to welcome the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank 2014 season. Manager, Geoff Edwards recently visited with the club’s committee to cement the bank’s commitment to the Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union club. With the 2014 Junior Rugby Union season drawing ever closer, kick off is in February next year, the club is seeking expressions of interest from keen juniors who would like to experience what it feels like to be a dragon! If you are interested in joining the Eumundi Dragons please email eumundidragons@gmail.com .

THE team at Wythes are very proud of our their first Wythes Annual Client Golf Day which turned out to be an absolute success. What a great day, our business has enjoyed huge success over the past 3 years and this was our perfect opportunity to thank our clients for their support. Over 60 clients enjoyed a quick pre drink prior to teeing off then the game was on. Everyone played 9 holes in teams of 5. Most people were new to golf so there was lots of laughs to be had. Alisa had the opportunity to drive the drinks cart and visit all of the teams throughout the day, she said her face was sore from laughing, everybody had a blast. After the golf a late lunch serenaded by live music ensured the afternoon continued with fun. Alisa presented the winning team with orange trophy’s of course and an encouragement aka worst team of the day award proudly won by Andrew Morris’s team. This event was a shared dream of Trisha’s and Alisa’s and we will continue this event annually and hope to see the attendance grow, as we would love each and every one of our clients to attend. Thank you again to all of our wonderful clients for your ongoing support.

sport Impact Boxing turns it on in front of its home crowd

COOROY RAG

IN front of a large crowd the Impact crew put on an awesome display of boxing at their annual tournament held at the Noosa District High School Stadium. The tournament attracted boxers from all over Australia who competed in a total of 34 bouts for the evening. The atmosphere was electric and all the fights were exciting and well matched. First up for the Impact crew was Payton “The Assassin” Aird-Cardiff. Once again Payton proved that she always comes to fight and when she couldn’t get a match in her own division she showed no hesitation in stepping up a weight division to fight a more experienced girl in Chloe Town from Toowoomba. In what was a very close encounter and could have gone either way, Chloe was awarded the victory via a split points decision. Next up was Alec “The Annihilator” AirdCardiff who was fighting for the 36kg Sunshine Coast Regional title. Alec’s opponent was Mikey Johnson from the Gold Coast. These two little men put on an amazing display of skills and technique as they stood toe to toe in centre ring. With the home crowd standing on its feet screaming their local boy home. Alec finished strong in the final round and was awarded the title and the belt! Cian “The Cannon” Jones was the next Impact fighter to climb through the ropes to take on Brendan Nairn from Brisbane. In what was another close bout after 3 hard fought rounds to the crowd’s surprise Brendan was awarded the win via a split points decision. Benny “The Bulldog” Cameron-Hands from the Impact stable was next up against Raymond “Razor” Glebow from Brisbane. This fight was always going to be a cracker

as these two have fought before with Raymond so far being unable to get a win against the Bulldog. As expected with the 38kg Sunshine Coast Regional title up for grabs this fight was nothing short of brilliant! Both boys boxed superbly with Benny being awarded the title and the belt via a split points decision! “Slamin Sam” Cameron-Hands was unable to get a match in his 46 kg division as was the current Australian 50kg champion Bryce Hansen. Both boys agreed to do an exhibition bout to show their skills to the extremely impressed crowd. Jim Luchetta was up next for the Impact crew. Jim was making his debut on the night and after his original opponent did not show up, Jim was left with no option but to step up to fight the more experienced Jake Hennesy from Beerwah. Both men were boxing well when towards the end of the second round Jim’s knee gave way on him. To his credit he chose to fight on and in severe pain was awarded the win via a points decision. In the main female bout of the evening Maddy “The Mauler” Phillips and Vilata Makata were fighting for the 60kg Sunshine Coast Regional Title. From the opening bell Maddy made it quite clear that in front of her home crowd that title was going to be hers. Maddy dominated the bout with her superior hand speed and aggression and was awarded the win via a points decision. In the main event of the evening Keegan “KO” Codd and Billy “The Bomber” Limov from Deception Bay were set to go to war for the 75kg Sunshine Coast Regional title. The crowd went wild as Keegan was called to centre ring to start the bout. From the opening

bell both men exchanged some heavy blows with neither boxer wanting to take a backwards step. Both boxers had their moments during the fight and with the crowd’s support Keegan came home with all guns firing till the final bell to be crowned the new 75 kg title holder. “What an awesome night of boxing! I am so proud of all our fighters,” said trainer, Mark Evans. “It’s a big thing to fight in front of your home crowd and these guys and girls have done themselves, their families and their club very proud. They all continue to grow and achieve their individual goals and move closer to their dreams with every bout they have. I think the crowd would agree that they witnessed something special within the Impact crew. “The Impact team will now turn its focus to the State titles to be held in Brisbane at the end of November. All monies raised at the Cooroy tournament will help fund these kids to travel to Perth next year for the Australian titles. “I would personally like to thank my wife Mel for all her support for myself and the Impact team. I would also like to thank all the people that helped out on the night and each and every person that walked through the door to help support these kids. Without your help & support this tournament could not happen. Rest assured that your support is helping these kids to follow their dreams of hopefully representing their country one day and for that I am truly grateful to you all.”
