Politics have descended to a pretty low degree, I’m sure that most of us would probably agree, Everything is personal, real policies dare not appear, Accusations of misogyny and sexism get uglier through the year. Julia won’t entertain calls for her and Tim to wed, And lets all those chauvinist remarks, sail right over her head, Tony is accused of having trouble with the opposite gender, Cycling running and swimming are more on his agenda. These personal subjects have no place in a Parliamentary forum, And members should attempt to preserve some decorum. Question Time sadly, borders on the simply absurd, Sometimes the answers cannot possibly be heard. Points of Order are raised on the lightest pretence, Censure motions are futilely called, and obviously make no sense. Cries of mock outrage, pointed fingers, disorder, The Speaker kicks someone out, they’d obviously ignored her. There are so many things crying for Parliament’s attention, Living costs, poverty, the aged, education, health, the pension. It’s not that difficult to produce good legislation, To take heed of the needs of this very lucky nation. People are tired of this Parliamentary discordance, And demand and deserve some progressive performance. Forget about winning the next federal election, And putting on a show for your own pre-selection, Keep in mind the truism that can be painfully right, A disgruntled electorate can give you one hell of a fright!! Jim Dunstan

The biggest free Christmas event on the Coast THE Great Santa Race is a truly amazing spectacle with Santa suit clad runners doing a roughly 300 metre sprint up the main street. There is a prize pool of $1,400 sponsored by Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group and while entry is $10 to compete in this you get a free Santa suit to run in and all the proceeds go to the Leukaemia Foundation. It is of course free to watch which is just as fun! The streets are decorated and there are 27 shops with window displays and you can vote for your favourite to win a $100 IGA voucher. There is the Guardian Pharmacy Photo Exhibition on display at the Butter Factory Arts Centre where you can also vote in the People’s Choice Award. This year there will also be a smart phone photo competition on the day via The Cooroy App. Everyone is also encouraged to come along dressed to the theme for this year ’s festival which is “Australiana”. Huge prize pool at the Cooroy Great Santa Race

A PRIZE pool of $1,400 is sure to see a huge field of entrants in the Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race on Saturday 3 December. The challenge is simple - make the short dash up Maple Street in Cooroy dressed in a santa suit! First prize is $500, second is $250 and third is $150 but the beauty is that you don’t even have to place to be a winner as there are also five random draws of $100! And if the prize pool isn’t enough enticement, the event also raises funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. So that should provide you with plenty of incentive to get your running shoes on! “This is the fourth year that we have had the mad-cap excitement of the Great Santa

Race as a part of the Christmas in Cooroy celebrations. We’ve had around 50 Santas in the last couple of years but it would be great if we could double those numbers and get 100 Santas streaking their way up Maple Street. There are thousands of people in the crowd cheering them on so it is all quite exciting. The more Santas that run, the more funds are raised for the Leukaemia Foundation,” said Danielle Taylor, Event Manager. The Great Santa Race will start at Apex Park in Cooroy at 4.30pm on Saturday 1st December. Entry to the Great Santa Race is only $10 and all entrants receive a free Santa suit to race in. Proceeds of the race are donated to Leukaemia Foundation. Participants

Poet’s Breakfast - a great start to the Festive Season THE annual Poet’s Breakfast has become a key part of the Christmas in Cooroy celebrations and is a great way to kick off the day on 1st December! This is the fifth year for the breakfast and it seems the poets just get better every year! “Not only do you get a fantastic buffet breakfast to start the day, but you’ll also get your share of laughter too because these poets are very entertaining,” said event manager, Danielle Taylor. MC for the event, popular hinterland poet Ian Mackay has mustered up a stellar lineup again. ABC’s evergreen “poet-in residence” and master of the short poem, Harry Donnelly will be there as will the very popular, “Irish Joe” Lynch and winner

of the coveted Woodford Poetry Slam Robin “Archie” Archbold. Each poet has developed his own, quite distinct style in both writing and performing but together they combine to produce a cohesive show that evolves as the morning unfolds. Tickets must be prepurchased via the Cooroy Hotel for only $30 which includes a hearty breakfast and a few hours of entertainment by some of the best local poets around. The Cooroy Poet’s Breakfast is at 8am on Saturday 1st December and bookings are essential by phoning 5447 6355 or visiting the Cooroy Hotel. ORGANISERS of the Australian Body Art Carnivale have announced the highly anticipated theme for 2013, and it is ... “The Best of Oz”! Event Manager Danielle Taylor says the theme lends itself to a wide range of interpretations for artists. “Think Aussie icons like the Opera House or Harbour Bridge, The Great Barrier Reef, Uluru, or Kakadu.” “Artists may be inspired to create works that relate to Dame Edna, Kylie Minogue, Metre Maids, Bondi Lifesavers, and

Plus there is a host of Aussie movies to draw inspiration from Mad Max to Priscilla Queen of the Desert,” she says. Danielle says the theme certainly doesn’t rule out interpretation of The Wizard of Oz either. “We’d welcome good and wicked witches, scarecrows, tin men, munchkins and more!” Held annually in Eumundi, the Australian Body Art Carnivale is Australia’s pre-

mier body art event, attracting artists and spectators from across Australia and overseas. It is a colourful and creative festival experience for all ages. The dates for 2013 are Saturday 11 May and Sunday 12 May (Mother’s Day). The event is centred on competitions in full body art and face painting, but also includes competitions and exhibitions in wearable art, vehicle art and photography. Free buses are back for summer holidays TRAVEL by bus on the Coast will be free again this summer with the return of Sunshine Coast Council’s Free Holiday Buses program. Council has partnered with TransLink to provide free travel on all public buses for locals and visitors from Wednesday 26 December 2012 to Sunday 6 January 2013. Transport Strategy Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said the program, funded by council’s Public Transport Levy, helped make travel easier for people on the Coast during the hectic holiday period. “We’re encouraging people to jump on board and try public transport services free of charge to see what’s available to them and in particular how attractive catching a modern bus can be,” he said. “The Free Holiday Buses initiative has proved very popular in the past with about 300,000 passengers using public buses during the free period last year. “It’s great to see people making the most of the free buses and hopefully considering using public transport on a more regular

basis. “The Free Holiday Buses program not only increases awareness and patronage, but also helps ease congestion on our roads throughout the busy festive season.” All Coast public transport will be free from 26 December to 6 January including: • TransLink’s Sunshine Coast Sunbus services (27 routes across the Sunshine Coast) • Glasshouse Country Coaches services (Hinterland Connect and MalenyLandsborough-Beerwah) • Flexilink services (Boreen Point to Tewantin, Conondale to Witta to Maleny, Kenilworth to Mapleton and Peachester to Beerwah) • Council Cabs services Normal booking procedures apply to Council Cabs and Flexilink services. Timetables for Sunbus services are available from translink.com.au or phone 13 12 30 anytime. For Glasshouse Country Coaches, Council Cabs and Flexilink timetables visit council’s website or phone (07) 5475 7272.

Queensland has THE highest rate of skin cancer in the World

Some facts; Every year… - More than 430,000 Australians are treated every year for skin cancers. - 10,500 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed. - Around 1600 die from melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Being thoroughly checked by your Doctor is NOT something that can be put off in this state, its something you should do every year as skin cancer is almost entirely preventable with early detection. At Maple St all our Doctors are more than capable of dealing with the majority of skin cancers. Examining the skin properly for cancers is not something that should be rushed. If you require a skin check, please make a full 15 minute appointment so that it can be done thoroughly. Sometimes with the help of a special skin microscope called a dermatoscope.

Storm season: It’s running cats and dogs

BOUQUET to the wonderful man who played his guitar outside IGA on Friday. You were so entertaining, thank you and well done!

THE onset of the storm season has seen the number of stray animals reported to Sunshine Coast Council multiplied. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said council called on animal owners to please be responsible for their pets and ensure they are safely contained within their property, particularly during storm events. “Council picked up 12 domestic pets over the weekend, six were reunited with their owners and the remaining six were impounded as they were not wearing an identification tag or microchipped,” she said. “These numbers are several more than usual over a weekend with no storm activity. “Many dogs and cats are frightened of thunder and lightening, with fireworks having a similar effect. “In their panic, dogs can somehow manage to escape properties that you may think on par with Alcatraz. “For advice on behavioural training or other options to calm dogs during storms, please speak with your vet. “If your pet is missing or you find a stray pet, phone council on 5475 7272.”

BOUQUETS to those women of Cooroy Golf Club who have put in so much time, effort and plants to make the garden at the entrance to the Club so attractive. BRICKBATS to those who have been stealing bromeliads from these gardens. You have no conscience and no sense of community! BRICKBATS to the impatient and grumpy drivers who beeped their car horns at Ricon staff (and their traffic control) putting up the lights on our town Christmas Tree. Considerable time, effort and money goes into the decoration of our tree. The tree is in a difficult position and the weather is hot. The decoration only takes a couple of days. Let’s be a little more considerate of community minded people doing their bit for our town. I hope you enjoy the lighting of the tree on November 30 along with the rest of us. A friendly wave from the car window would be a far more considerate gesture. If you are not feeling so Chrismassy, take an alternative route ... ho ho ho!! BRICKBAT to whoever removed the penguins and polar bear decorations from in front of Town & Country Home Rentals. Please return them as they were put up by volunteers and are purchased from donations! Email: editorial@cooroyrag.com.au

Cr McKay said the storm season always reinforced the importance of having your animal registered and microchipped. “Registered and microchipped dogs and cats can quickly be reunited with their owners if they stray,” she said. “To acknowledge and reward owners for doing the right thing for their pet and the community simply by registering their pet annually, council’s fee for the first impounding is zero. “Also remember to ensure your pet’s microchip details are up-to-date with your microchip register to help council, the vet or lost animal shelter to reunite you quickly and easily. “If your pet goes missing and your microchip details are not up-to-date and you do not know which database the chip is registered to, visit council’s website for some simple tips about how to resolve this quickly.” All dogs and cats must be registered and wear a council-issued registration tag when in public. Significant reduction in registration fees apply for desexed and microchipped dogs and cats, and for pensioners.

news Savings - the new credit

Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy AS the international financial world continues to work its way through its challenges, a buzz saying is emerging...Savings is the new credit! Many economists would acknowledge that the world financial system spiralled downwards when credit became a way of sourcing a lifestyle rather than putting savings aside for a lifestyle. Past generations had little or no access to such creatures as credit cards, pay day loans, overdrafts or even personal loans. As for going to the bank for a home loan, during some generations, this would only happen if you had at least a 50% deposit and had been a customer of the bank for sometime. So how have past generations coped given they too experienced such crisis as The Great Depression and “the recession we had to have”? Past generations didn’t have the world at its

finger tips via their computers or ability to access their bank account with a card and not just in their own country but world wide. Above all past generations had the attitude that you saved for the things that you wanted or you simple went without. As the world shows signs of coming out of this crisis, products such as debit cards, credit cards that reward the user for reducing balances, Christmas Club passbook account and various types of savings accounts are being considered more and more by consumers. To achieve savings relies on being able to budget your income over your necessary expenses and various budgeting tools are available these days to assist consumers with identifying necessary expenses. The key is to write everything down that you spend during the day for a period and then commence identifying the items that can be reduced or eliminated all together to find extra income to put aside as sav-

ings. Another key factor is to only use your savings for the necessary expenses. Most banks will be able to provide you with the guidance, budgeting tools and products that will enable you to jump on board the trend that is emerging and have savings for your life style requirements. If you have any questions on how to start your savings plan or would like to discuss any other banking matter, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

Community Bank blows out ten candles

CAN you believe it was a decade ago that Cooroy decided to start their own bank? Several original shareholders were on hand to celebrate the tenth birthday of Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank on 15 November – the very same date it opened its doors in 2002. The same branch has now given locals a real say in their own banking future. And with more than $400,000 given back to

the Cooroy and surrounding communities since 2008 from this branch alone and more than 10,000 accounts opened, the Community Bank model has obviously been welcomed by locals, said Cooroy Community Bank manager Fiona Hutchings. ‘’It was such a fantastic day and a time to reflect on our 10 years in business and celebrate this community achievement. It was also special to celebrate with so many familiar faces,” Ms.

Hutchings said. “A lot of great work has gone into this branch, but with every passing year we can see how much the support from the people of Cooroy has meant for groups and organisations in our community. When we opened our doors we promised to deliver a banking service that the people of Cooroy expected and deserved. I think we’ve achieved that goal and continue to uphold the same goals,” she said.

The celebration doubled as a fundraiser for the Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade with a sausage sizzle in front of the branch. “We donned the aprons, served cake and cool drinks and it was great to welcome so many who continue to support our Community Bank and the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service. We were really excited to support the inspirational efforts the volunteer crews put in year round,” Fiona said. Fiona added that Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL) who manages the Cooroy, Tewantin and Marcoola Community Bank branches has now provided shareholders with dividends to shareholders for 4 straight years with dividends totalling $477,111.64 since the company went into profit in 2008. Collectively, the 3 branches have now combined to give back $1.1 million to its communities, quite an achievement given the world economic climate of the past 4 years. “This has happened because local people are

continuing to bank with their local Community Bank branch. Our local sporting clubs, not-forprofit organisations and community groups are better off because local people invest in our Community Bank Company, SCCFSL. But we’re equally proud to share our profits with our community with ongoing support continuing for; Christmas In Cooroy festivities, Noosa District State High School, Eden Rehabilitation Centre, Cooroy State School, Cooroy Gymnastics, Cooroy Tennis Club, Cooroora United Soccer Club, Black Mountain and Ridgewood Rural Fire Brigades, Cooroy/ Noosa Genealogical and Historical Research Group, Pomona King of the Mountain Festival, Noosa Pirates Rugby League Club, Coastguard Noosa and many more. “We’re excited about what lies ahead for all our Community Bank branches on the coast and continue to live by message - bank with us and everyone benefits,” Fiona concluded.

Mary Valley scarecrow festival winners THE winners in the 2012 Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival have been announced. As luck – and judges’ preferences - would have it, a feathered bird took first place in the children’s category despite the fact that scarecrows are meant to chase them all away! The “chicken” carefully constructed by the Prep A class at Mary Valley State College won the kids’ category, followed by “Scarecrowasaurus” by Imbil’s Shanti Richards and Conondale entry “Billy the Kid” by Jack and Tom Shalley. Bob the Scary Builder won the traditional category for Charles Robey of Imbil, attracting judges’ votes for its good construction and a themed message for both children and adults regarding Bob the Builder and safety with tools. The judges liked the use of traditional and recycled material, and said a lot of thought and ingenuity went into the creative and technical approach in making the corn and the black crow. Second in the tradi-

tional ‘crows was Brooloo Betty - the Zombie Witch which featured attention to detail in the rings, hair adornments and pumpkins and was “strikingly attractive” with solar powered eye panels. The good traditional

scarecrow known as Cecil added wit and humour with a sign and collected third place for its Conondale creators. A Conondale scarecrow called “Dragon Rider” was awarded first in the artistic category for Daryl Jensen, fol-

Bob the scary builder IM 4 Combining a message of safety with tools and excellent scarecrow construction technique, Bob the Scary Builder was judged winner of the traditional category for Charles Robey of Imbil. Make the right transition YOU may need to review your transition to retirement arrangements in light of changes to the way superannuation contributions are taxed. Are you an Australian making the transition to retirement or would you say you’re a high income earner? If you answered yes to either question, you may need to take note of some of the changes introduced via the 2012/13 Federal Budget to the way superannuation contributions are taxed. These new rules might well affect your retirement plans. 1. Higher contributions tax for high income earners. The federal government is doubling the super contributions tax rate to 30% for Australians earning over $300,000. 2. Lower concessional contributions cap for over 50s Over the past few years, Australians over age 50 have enjoyed a significant tax break on their super contributions to encourage them to save for their retirement. They have been able to contribute $50,000 a year towards their super at the 15 per cent concessional rate of tax – that’s double the standard $25,000 annual concessional contributions cap. This tax break ended on 30 June 2012, but the government was planning to continue the incentive for Australians aged over 50 with a super balance under $500,000. However, the government is now deferring the start of this new system to 1 July 2014. The two-year deferral means that everyone, regardless of age, will now be subject to the same $25,000 concessional cap for the 2012/ 13 and 2013/14 financial years. Stay under the limit: You may need to review your arrangements to make sure you’re not making concessional contributions over the reduced concessional contributions cap. Going over the cap attracts a severe penalty. Plan early, plan well: Many people leave it right to the end of the tax year to look at their

super. But it’s worth putting a plan in place at the start of the year to avoid the last minute rush. Early planning means you stay in control all year and can avoid inadvertently breaching the $25,000 concessional cap. And remember, you can’t put salary into super at a concessional rate after you’ve earned it. Think about the bigger picture: If you’re very near to retirement, your ability to make additional concessional contributions might be significantly reduced. You’ll need to work out how the changes affect your overall retirement plan, particularly if you’re planning to Transition to Retirement (TtR) or you’re currently engaged in a TtR strategy. • If you’re over 50 years of age and you were taking advantage of the increased cap, you may need to reduce your concessional contributions to $25,000 for at least the next two years. You’ll also need to work out what to do with any income that would take your concessional contributions over $25,000 that you previously diverted to super. • And if you’re earning over $300,000 per annum, you need to be aware of how the higher tax rate is going to affect your retirement planning, because your super contributions will potentially attract a 30% tax. This means you’ll only be saving 16.5% on your marginal tax rate, compared with 31.5% under the previous rules. Look at your tax rate: For the majority of Australians, super is still the most effective vehicle for retirement saving, particularly with the super guarantee gradually increasing from 9 to 12% over the next decade. Earnings within super continue to be taxed at 15% and income in retirement from age 60 is tax-free. But the tax-effectiveness of extra super contributions will vary depending on how much you earn. If you’re in the higher marginal tax rate brackets, then making additional concessional con-

tributions up to the $25,000 cap might still be a great strategy. Taxpayers on more modest salaries might look to take advantage of the government’s low earner super contributions and co-contributions. And others might want to look outside super for alternative ways to invest any additional funds. * Chad Monroe and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd are Authorised Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd, ABN 89 051 208 327, AFS Licence No. 232706. We specialise in removing lantana/weed/tobacco bush/ tall grasses infestations, especially where businesses of a similar nature cannot access this type of terrain or the area has machinery or environmental conditions or constraints. “My service will enable clients/government departments to regain control of previously inaccessible land, where otherwise weeds and tall grasses have stopped them from maintaining it themselves,” said Ian. COOROY RAG U3A AN empathy and passion for the beauty and quirkiness found in the natural environment drives the work of Sunshine Coast artist Phyl Williams. Whimsical and unique sculptures and fibre forms are created from a variety of found and recycled materials. Texture and colour are important and finding the form within the chosen piece. Her photographs are sensitive and often vibrant images found while exploring the bush and shoreline. A recent journey through rural and coastal South Australia and another to the tip of Cap York and the Torres Strait Islands has provided numerous fresh ideas and materials, enough to keep her busy for months. Phyl’s sculpture and other works will be showcased at the Cooroy Library.

RSL Sub-Branch THE next meeting of the SubBranch will be held in the Club on Tuesday 11 December, commencing at 5.30pm. On behalf of the president and committee, we would like to wish all of our members and the citizens of Cooroy, Pomona and surrounding districts a very happy and safe Xmas and a great New Year and look forward to seeing you on our memorial days in 2013.

Got your drains ready for the wet season?

AT a special Rotary Awards night in Cooroy six young people were acknowledged for their attitude and performance to their work. The presentation of the awards was made at the CWA Hall in Cooroy on Monday 12th November where relatives and friends of the awardees along with members of the Rotary Club of Cooroy were present. Awardees came from Cooroy, Cooran and Eumundi. The Rotary “Pride of Work” award is to encourage pride in personal performance in the workplace, and to help create a national attitude for the benefit of the country. The award is in recognition of those who “go the extra mile” in their occupation and to those who are prepared to show an attitude to their work which is beyond the normal call of duty. Ray Judd, Chairman of The Vocational Service Committee in Cooroy Rotary, told them that it was no accident that they were there on the night to receive recognition for their work. “You have been selected from the community because you demonstrated the qualities of work associated with the objectives of this award.”.

David Cramb President Rotary Club of Cooroy Awardees are Lucy Cloonan from Eumundi, Cherrie Orr from Eumundi, Christina Luto from Eumundi, Nick Baker from Cooran, Erika Pernoud from Cooroy, and Janine Rampono from Cooroy

L’il Miss Molly Ryan MOLLY is 9 years old. She has been our ‘little angel’ since she was 8 weeks old. It has been a delightful privilege to have her as our pet. Always sweet tempered, loves everyone and everything – especially elderly folk, young folk, and all in between! Monday is her special day – the rubbish ruck comes! Before suffering with arthritis, Molly used to walk beside my mobility scooter each day; we used to walk anywhere between two to three kms a day, and she loved it. For about three years now, she has ridden on the scooter with me. This enables her to get out a bit and socialise and see all her adoring friends. Each morning, when we get up, she comes to the end of the bed. Stan and her then say their prayers. She puts her front legs on his knees, bows her head (he bows his too) and they ‘pray together’ for a minute. After breakfast, before Stan goes to the Camphor Laurel Mill, or SES,

they have a chat in the lounge room, discussing what Molly has to do that day. When Stan gets a call out re SES, she is his personal valet. She helps pull up his socks and put on his overalls. All very helpful in a hindering way. But we love her for it. She doesn’t like bush turkeys. They dig up daddy’s garden. Thunder – she ‘must’ have it!? As with most noises she wants to know where it came from. She loves being on the scooter, but the best is the car. There are many tales about our little Molly, all being kept in our hearts and minds, as she will be – always. Lyn Ryan

Letter to the editor

I was at the Library this week and noticed this Hoop Pine (Araucaria cunninghamii). I was photographing it when a man came up to me to ask what I was doing crawling through all the Lomandra’s for the perfect angle, he was so surprised that I noticed it and said so many would walk past and not. I work for Noosa District Landcare and helped plant the Lower Mill Site, my son is also on the Mill Board. I always look at plants and find them so incredibly tenacious, I draw a lot of strength from them actually, they survive and indeed thrive under the most extreme circumstances. A bird must have broken the tip, it looks like an alpaca on sunset, plants are so amazing. Meristematic cells are in the very tip of plants, that is what they take for tissue culture as they are like the umbilical cord, full of everything in abundance, the very tip of new growth in plants is called the Meristem. I just love plants so much, hence me working in conservation. I think many people don’t see the amazing beauty and resilience of our native plants. Wendy May

COOROY RAG Helping Queenslanders for 30 years by Carol Watkins, Deputy Local Controller, Sunshine Coast

THE week commencing 12 November was National SES Week and on Saturday 17 th a number of members from our Unit attended the SES Week awards for the North Coast Region, held in Gympie. Our Unit, Sunshine Coast North which comprises Cooroy, Pomona, Boreen Pt and Tewantin was honoured, being named the Regional Unit/Group of the Year in recognition of its work in this year ’s flooding in Cooroy, Pomona and Tewantin. This award was accepted on behalf of the Unit, by Stan Ryan, Lo-

cal Controller, Sunshine Coast North Unit. “Members of the Sunshine Coast North Unit demonstrated outstanding service to the community during the Cooroy severe weather event in February this year, confirmed to be the most severe weather event ever recorded on the Sunshine Coast,” EMQ executive manager Merrick Ilett said. “Three days later, this event was followed by further flooding in the Tewantin and Pomona areas where Sunshine Coast North members were again activated.” The Australia wide

theme for SES Week this year was ‘Take 30 seconds to thank the SES volunteers for 893,057 hours of service.” This figure is of course, Q u e e n s l a n d wide, however the number of hours put in by volunteers on the Sunshine Coast is also very significant. If one were to put a dollar value to the efforts of these people it would be quite remarkable. SES volunteers give all year round. In storms, floods and many other emergencies, they sacrifice their precious work and family time – not to mention sleep – to help people in need. We are always looking for new members and the next intake will be early next year, in February 2013. For information on joining the S.E.S. contact one of our Group Leaders: Pauline Eglington 0427 349218; for Pomona, Evelyn Buchanan, 0428 571213; Tewantin, Murray Caddie, 0410 512535; Boreen Point, Ron Williams 0488 795102.

news How high is the Hoop Pine? TO RAISE awareness and promote our beautiful botanical gardens at Lake Macdonald, Friends of the Noosa Botanic Gardens are running a competition ‘Guess the height of the Hoop Pine’. The Hoop Pine (Araucaria cunninghamii), is the oldest cultivated native tree in the gardens and was planted in 1935 by the ‘Powell’ family, the last private owners of the land that the gardens are now established. The Noosa Botanic Gardens are on the site of what was once an unofficial rubbish dump. Local resident Ida Duncan gained permission from Noosa Council to clear the site of rubbish and begin to create the Botanic Gardens. Two Council staff were appointed the following year. The Gardens were officially opened in 1990. Since then they have grown considerably to become one of the jewels in Noosa’s crown. There are still only two full time staff supplied by council. Entries close on Thursday 13 at 4pm and the winner will be announced on Friday December 14. The person who makes the correct guess or nearest guess will receive a $100 gift voucher for Fire & Ice restaurant and cafe, Cooroy. Under 15’s winner will receive $50 gift voucher for Possum Book Shop, Cooroy. Multiple winners will each share the prize. Correct guess will be to the nearest centimetre. A maximum of two guesses per person with entry forms at the entrance of the gardens. Winners will be notified by telephone and results, along with the actual height will be published in the Cooroy Rag. Sunshine Tree Surgery will climb and measure the tree one week before the draw. Guessing times are to coincide with Noosa Botanical Gardens opening times which are 6.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday. This competition is an initiative of the Friends of the Gardens and has been funded entirely through non taxpayer funds.

Meals on Wheels volunteer opportunities VOLUNTEERS are at the core of the expanding Pomona and District Meals on Wheels service, with a number of opportunities open for willing helpers – not least, someone who can take over the role of treasurer. “Irene Gibbs, who has been our treasurer for the past year, has resigned in order to handle other commitments,” President Michael Innis said, “so we are looking for someone able to take on that position as soon as possible. “And we can always use additional vol-

unteer helpers in our kitchen and as delivery drivers.” The service operates from the Pomona Memorial Hall, with deliveries three days a week to clients in Pomona, Cooroy, Eumundi, Cooran, Traveston, Kin Kin and Boreen Point. Freshly cooked three-course hot meals are provided on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with frozen meals also available. Kitchen volunteers work from 7am to about 11am and drivers for an hour or two from 11am on delivery days. Rosters are

prepared a month in advance with a commitment sought for as little as a couple of hours a month. The committee meeting this week heard that deliveries in October had topped the 50-a-day mark. Anyone interested in volunteering with Meals on Wheels can phone Anne Coombes at the office on 5485 1777 or Michael Innis on 0422 877 971. Kitchen supervisor Di Donaldson, 5442-6059 or 0400 795 919, would be happy to talk to people interested in helping in the kitchen.

Spring brings changes to Kindy grounds POMONA and District Kindergarten has used the recent school holidays to make some changes to the playground for the children to enjoy as the weather warms up. The lovely natural setting of the large outdoor play area has been enhanced by the addition of a meandering dry creek bed and timber bridges to access the gazebo and ever-popular sandpit. “The playground is now better than ever,” says Lyndal Fletcher, co-Director of the Kindy, “and the children will make wonderful use of the hard work put in by their parents and the local community.” Well shaded by trees the playground provides plenty of opportunities for the children to explore, discover and learn about the natural environment. As spring arrived last term, the adult-supported activities included planting vegeta-

bles and sunflowers and the creation of a frog pond, which the children have thoroughly enjoyed. With enrolments now open for 2013 and places still available, these new additions to the kindy will be ready for exploring by a new group of children in 2013. The kindy is located in a heritage-listed building in the heart of Pomona, in Stan Topper Park. As a community kindergarten, affiliated with C&K, the elected Management Committee each year has the role of focussing their efforts on areas of importance. The emphasis is on children and resources, not profits. Running a pre-prep program which has a play based curriculum, the experienced teaching staff encourage children to make choices and decisions, explore, problem solve and develop

Storm & Bushfire preparation & information evening DO you know what to do in the event of a flood or bushfire emergency? In response to the large demand for information, the Pomona & District Community House will be hosting an evening with the SES and RURAL FIRE BRIGADE on Tuesday 4th December at 6.30pm at the Lawson Shed, Pomona. With the amount of growth of vegetation over the past 2 years combined with a dry winter, we look like having a high risk of bush and grass fires during the summer. Rural Fire Services will be giving instructions on fire prevention and action in the case of fire and evacuation procedures. As everyone knows the Sunshine Coast, in particular Pomona, Cooran, Cooroy and Kin Kin, have experienced devastating floods in the last few years resulting in massive property damage. SES will advise on preparing for storms and flooding. Date: Tuesday, 4th December Time: 6.30pm Venue: Lawson Shed, Pomona & District Community House PLEASE BOOK IN AND LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE COMING Ph: 5485 2427 BE INFORMED, PREPARE AND STAY SAFE

their own independence and self-confidence. Throughout the year the children grow socially and emotionally and extend their thinking and physical skills. Free play in the playground is a large part of that learning journey. Pomona and District Kindergarten strives to be an inclusive and sustainable living and learning community. It’s philosophy includes an acknowledgement of the uniqueness and potential of all children, their families and the wider community, who are valued and share a sense of belonging within the community kindergarten. Fees are less than $24 per day and healthcare card holders may be eligible for $0 out-of-pocket. Currently taking enrolments for the 5 day fortnight pre-prep program in 2013, the kindy can be contacted on 5485 1381 for more information.

Pomona Art Market in the Paddock returns after hit with locals THE Old Railway Station Gallery at Pomona will be a hype of activity in November for the second ‘Art Market in the Paddock’. Local artists have begun cleaning out their studios in preparation for the big event where everything sold will be under $100. Pomona Art Gallery Convenor Wendy Catlin, says the first Art Market in the Paddock in June was such a great success, it’s now become a twice yearly event. “We have such talented artists who regularly use the gallery to create original paintings, pottery and jewellery,” Wendy said. “Art Market in the Paddock gives locals and tourists the opportunity to meet the artists and take home a treasured piece of original artwork.”

The Old Railway Station Gallery at Pomona is the perfect venue to host such an event with its rustic buildings, attractive gardens and green lawns, nestled in Noosa’s leading heritage town. “Our artists our inspired every time they come here. You couldn’t ask for more picturesque surrounds,” Wendy said. Art Market in the Paddock will be held on Saturday November 24 from 9:00am to 1:00pm. At the same time you can also visit the regular Pomona Country Markets for all your fresh produce and local wares – just up the street in Stan Topper Park. For more information visit the gallery website at www.pomonartgallery.com or call the office on (07) 5485 2950. Email: pomonagallery@gmail.com

Think GLOBALLY - Shop LOCALLY Shopping locally is about supporting local businesses, your own community, the environment and local economy.

POMONA

If you spend $5 in a local business, on average, that $5 will pass through 3 more “local hands” before leaving the area. If everyone, in Pomona did this we would have added nearly half a million dollars to our local economy and if you expand that to Cooran, Kin Kin, Boreen Point, Federal and Cooroy we are now talking about millions of dollars. Think how many job opportunities that could provide for our kids in the future! Choose local products and businesses where you can. Get to know your local butcher, baker, cabinet maker and other local businesses. Every dollar counts. Shopping locally is about many things. In our modern world it is necessary to reduce the impact on the environment for our planet . Local purchases also have potential health benefits. For example locally grown food is fresher and healthier. Economic, environmental and health consequences do not always occur to us when we buy something as simple as a piece of fruit. If you buy an orange grown locally (in Sth Qld for example) you are eating fresh produce that cost less to supply and transport both economically and environmentally compared to ones grown overseas. It’s about opening your eyes and supporting independent shops and businesses in your town. In Pomona we have food, clothes, health care; luxury products like body care, flowers, plants, gifts, accommodation, holidays and furniture plus more. Support your local growers, producers and services: be it the local IGA, hardware, mechanic, builders, produce, recyclers, antique dealers, farmers, fruiterer, baker, newsagency, pet supplies, florist, post office, accountants, local tradies (electricians, plumbers, plasterers, tilers, painters...) or visit our local markets. When you take time out to eat at a local restaurant or café or buy coffee and cake with a friend! We have a tea house, coffee shop, café, take-always, Chinese, Indian & Italian restaurants; Hotel and Bowls Clubs. Go further afield to find French, Thai, Indian and modern Australian Cuisine. Within our district find all that you need; shoes, bags, clothes, gourmet items and lots and lots of local produce. Turn into the door of that shop you walk past every day or check your locality guides. Go on, give it a try – there’s a good chance you’ll want to go back; go back to local, friendly, reliable service. Support our Community, our neighbours and build a future for our kids.

Around the Clubs & beyond THE month has been filled with activity, and for such a little village we manage to pack a lot in! The Cooroyactiv program welcomes Elaine Williams who has been busy visiting schools to disperse information on the State Government’s new initiative “Get in the Game”. Eligible children have access to $150 to take up a new sport with one of our registered local sports organisation. For more information visit www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/getinthegame The Opal Street Bowls Club has received some excellent support in the form of increased patronage and feedback from the community in response to media coverage regarding the future of this facility. Many suggestions, as progressive as they were, require a large investment in funds, which neither Council, State nor Federal Governments with their cuts would consider. Discussions regarding available land in Cooroy have revealed a severe lack of space zoned for Sport & Recreation, and a submission to the new draft Planning Scheme regarding this is being completed. Whilst on Planning, there seems in this draft the lack of appropriately zoned land for the much needed Caravan Park and RV Stop which has been a priority of the community for nearly 20 years. The financial opportunities that continue to be untapped from travelers that bypass our very special town and head north is an issue that needs addressing now to assist in recovering our economy, so please support any submissions regarding. Another issue of great concern to residents and business owners is the continuing vandalism that culminated in the Salvation Army building fire. The

Chamber of Commerce and Residents Association are scheduling a meeting to form an action group in response to the community’s call for zero tolerance on this matter. The meeting date and venue shall be sent out in the next week to all networks, so please pass on. The Cooroy Project and rejuvenation of the Memorial Hall has a new submission in for Round 3 of the Regional Development Australia Fund. The new application includes provision for a requested day room to accommodate support services for the community, including a Community Liaison Officer to further the capabilities of Cooroy to deal with economic & community challenges, and facilitate cohesion and collaboration between groups. We look forward to being able to announce a positive outcome from this submission, and being able to celebrate with the community at the Cooroy Ball which was rescheduled to February 16 to allow for announcements. At Maple Street, the sponsors and volunteers that have enabled the RSL to continue to provide many services to the Community in these especially hard times will be officially thanked with lashings of sangria and festive nibbles at the Club Xmas Party on Dec 1 at 2.30. Everyone will then take a position at the finishing line to cheer on those brave locals in the Santa Race, and then follow the Bendigo Street Parade on its journey. Christmas is such an exciting time, and we invite all of Cooroy to put on your glitter and enjoy the incredible efforts of the Chamber and their team who have decorated our town to perfection! See you there.

THAT time of year again and the Noosa Pipe Band along with the Society of St Andrews of Scotland, are putting on a Hogmanay Party in the Memorial hall at Cooroy, 31st December 2012. Both organisations rely on voluntary contributions which are then put back into local projects by the Society and the Noosa Band continues to provide performances at many of the local fetes and parades. DUE to popular demand Laksa Lemak is back on the lunch menu at Dhoms Kitchen. Over 40 ingredients are used in the making of this coconut curry noodle soup with the spices and herbs individually roasted and ground. Included in the house made curry paste are roasted fresh turmeric and ginger, candlenuts, lemongrass and cumin seed. Spencer adds pandanus leaf, curry leaf and lemongrass to flavour the laksa base. Available with free-range chicken, Australian banana prawns or grilled tofu, it is served with rice noodles and bean sprouts. It is topped with spring onion, Vietnamese mint, garden mint, saw leaf coriander and fried shallots. The laksa base is also

available for sale as a frozen curry sauce if you wish to make your own laksa at home. Spencer notes that “Laksa has it’s origins in a dish called ‘Kao Suey’ from the Shan State in Northern Burma. Versions of the dish were thought to have been brought to Northern Thailand and Malaysia and Singapore by Chinese Muslim traders”. Dhom’s Kitchen’s will add several new items to their award-winning frozen curry sauces and snacks in the coming weeks, including their popular house made Coconut Ice Cream. “The Seafood Curry Sauce is our most popular sauce” says Dhom. “It is perfect for grilled seafood or over steamed vegetables and tofu as a vegetarian dish. You can have a meal ready using the our sauces in under 20 minutes. As long as it takes to cook your rice!” If you are looking for a delicious Christmas gift why not buy a gift voucher from Dhom’s Kitchen. Dhom and Spencer have put together several set menus for group bookings and Christmas Parties during the festive period. Contact Dhom for further details. The restaurant will be open on New Year’s Eve for a five course set menu for $40 which will highlight local sustainable produce. Bookings are essential.

We’ve got Christmas wrapped this year

Warrior IVF mum shares to support others NINE years on fertility treatment and 19 attempts at falling pregnant makes Jenni Salisbury an expert in her own right. Not an expert on IVF, but an expert on how fertility treatment affects a person’s life and impacts them emotionally and physically. Jenni, now the proud mother of two, does not take motherhood for granted and understands the heartache of loss first hand. After 13 IVF attempts, Jenni and husband Dale finally received the news that they had been waiting for- Jenni was pregnant. The news improved beyond their comprehension, when it was revealed that Jenni was having twins. “We were gobsmacked when our doctor pointed out ‘two’ little blobs on the ultrasound,” Jenni said. “Even though we were in shock initially, we couldn’t have been happier. We felt like we had been blessed to be having twins after such a long time on IVF”. The joy of pregnancy was soon overshadowed by grief when Jenni went into premature labour at 19 weeks and sadly miscarried her identical twin girls. “It was the most heart wrenching night of my life. One minute I was pregnant, the next I was giving birth to my babies, knowing full well what the outcome would be. The worst part for me was not having control over what my body was doing” Jenni said. “My babies were perfectly healthy. It was just pure bad luck that I went into early labour and they were too young to have any chance of survival”. The loss of their twins gave Jenni and Dale the determination to continue with

their treatment. One year later Jenni gave birth to their first son, Taj. The embryo that she had implanted had been frozen from the same ‘batch’ as the twins. “We always knew it would happen for us one day, we just had no idea it would take us so long or that we would have to go through so much to realise our dream of becoming parents”’ Jenni said. Jenni now finds herself supporting others that are on a similar journey in their quest for a family. “I was continually approached by people who were on a similar journey to the one I had been on. They desperately needed to talk with someone who genuinely understood how they were feeling and what they were going through.” Jenni said. “IVF can be a long and lonely road for some couples and it is vital that they have someone who can empathise with them, support them and help them understand that they are not alone.” Realising that she had much to offer in the way of her own IVF experience, Jenni started an online blog for those dealing with infertility. “With 1 in 6 couples struggling with infertility, I felt that I needed a platform to be able to reach people beyond my own community. Jenni said. “The blog is designed to offer support for those affected by infertility and is a place where people can share their own stories with others who are on a similar journey.” Jenni Salisbury is the author of ‘Little Blessings.’ A personal story of my battle with infertility and the quest for a family’. COOROY RAG Have you got your party feet ready for this festive season???

Come in and see Maria, Scott and Chloe for all your feet requirements.

Rob Auld - and his Lyme Disease ROB Auld has Lyme disease. In last month’s Cooroy Rag I read an article on Lucy, also suffering from the same complaint, but with some different symptoms from Rob’s. I thought it could be helpful to other Cooroy residents to know of other aspects of this condition, seeing there is not just the one case in the Cooroy district. It may enable other people, similarly affected, to receive early help, which is more likely to achieve positive results in healing. With thanks, Jenny Waddell

Rob’s problems seemed to start on 11/4/ 11 when he bent over and twisted his neck while putting together some bunk beds. With sudden severe vertigo and nausea, he fell back against the wall and had to crawl to bed. The severe dizziness continued the next day, and Rob just managed a day’s work before going to the GP. He was diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a condition caused by a “crystal” coming loose in the inner ear and disrupting normal balance function. He was given exercises, and told it should go in a couple of days. Although the severe vertigo gradually lessened, Rob was left with a constant sense of disorientation and impaired balance. He had to hang onto furniture to get around inside, and was loaned a wheeled walker for use outside. His eyes flickered from side to side in a movement called “nystagmus.” This made it very difficult for him to focus. He also experienced problems concentrating. The GP was convinced Rob had a bad case of BPPV, and referred him to a physiotherapist for vestibular rehabilitation. This

helped with the extreme dizziness, but Rob remained off balance and disorientated. Rob was also given a referral to an ENT specialist, who referred him on to a neurologist. Rob had CT and MRI brain scans, multiple blood tests and full examinations by the specialists. They thought he may have Parkinson’s disease, MS or perhaps a brain tumour, but all the tests were clear. The neurologist and the GP dismissed the possibility of Lyme disease, telling him it doesn’t exist in Australia. The neurologist on the coast ultimately referred Rob to a psychiatrist, with the implication that he had a psychiatric disorder. Further consultations followed, including a neuro-opthalmologist, a holistic GP and another neurologist. Rob tried numerous complementary therapies in an attempt to alleviate symptoms. None of these had lasting benefit, but have cost into the thousands of dollars. Rob has experienced various other symptoms, including tremor, memory problems, seizures, stuttering, visual and hearing problems, muscle stiffness/pain, extreme fatigue and sleep disturbance. He has gone from being an extremely fit, hard working man to one who can barely walk a hundred metres with the walker. It was not until Rob tested positive for Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria responsible for Lyme disease, that we discovered all these symptoms were consistent with neurological Lyme disease. This was transmitted via a tick bite, of which Rob had received several in the course of his outdoor work. We are very grateful that another GP had the courage and wherewithal to refer Rob for this test. Most Australian doctors still hold the position that you cannot get Lyme disease

here, and they are not trained in how to diagnose or treat this problem. Since the diagnosis, the family has met a number of people who waited many years before getting an accurate diagnosis. Like the Auld‘s, they have gone through the trial and expense of multiple medical appointments, tests and therapies, by well meaning but ill-informed health care practitioners. Even on the right treatment, symptoms can take years to resolve. It is understood that some people never recover, and at worst, the disease can be fatal. Looking back, Rob probably had symptoms of Lyme disease about six months before the BPPV episode. He had experienced increasing fatigue, concentration problems and difficulty maintaining his heavy workload, but put it down to the hot summer and not getting any younger! This disease has had a profound impact on Rob and his family. He has been unable to work now for 19 months, and started on disability support pension 6 months ago. His wife has recently taken leave without pay from work and has just commenced on a carer payment. Their two daughters worry about their previously fit, active dad. They are very grateful to all those who have helped them in many ways. Rob and his family want to share their story as they believe there are others in this community going through unnecessary suffering because of Lyme disease. They would encourage people to persevere in getting an accurate diagnosis and never give up hope. As the community becomes more aware of this problem, it is hoped people can receive the treatment they need and not have to endure the hardships that other Lyme sufferers have gone through.

Improve your exercise motivation WE all know the health benefits of exercising and the possible health risks of not doing so but most of us do not incorporate exercise in our lifestyle. It is easy to make exercising a habit but you need to have the right mindset. Here are some powerful ways to motivate yourself! Put your workout times on your calendar – this will mentally and physically prepare you to do it and helps to make exercise a priority. Even three times a week will do. Get an exercise buddy - when you exercise alone, you might find it less enjoyable. Find someone or a few people to exercise with. Treat yourself - once in awhile, reward yourself for exercising with a massage as a way to motivate yourself more. Count your calories - the recommended calorie intake for men is 2,500 and for women 2,000. Too much can lead to weight gain. But exercise can turn your body into

a fat-burning engine. Visualise a sexier you - Who doesn’t want to develop a hotter figure? Hire a personal trainer – see results fast with a qualified personal trainer who will design a personalised workout that fits your needs. Keep the scales nearby - weigh yourself at least once a week to ensure you are on track. Sign up for an exercise class - learn more about the best techniques to make exercising a more enjoyable activity. It really helps! Think of a less-stressful life - exercising stimulates the production of endorphins in your brain, which in turn enlightens your mood. Read - the more you know, the more you become motivated to exercise. Surf the web, buy fitness books, and scan magazines! Don’t overdo it - too much time exercising will leave you physically and mentally

exhausted instead of energised and alert. Between 4 to 7 hours of exercise a week is the best to reap its benefits. Buy new clothes (smaller ones) - shop for new clothes that are smaller. Just by looking at them in your closet will motivate you to burn off some fat! Do something you enjoy - try dancing, yoga, sports, gardening, cycling, swimming, etc. Keep your body moving and you are exercising! Bring your workout clothes to work – then you will have no reason not to go to the gym. Set realistic goals - Instead of exercising for 30 minutes a day, start with 15 minutes. It’s best to begin with small steps as you are still building a habit and over time gradually increase the exercise period little by little. Get some motivation help by giving Lee Smith at Make a Difference Health & Fitness a call to on 5442 6179 or visit their website at www.madhf.com.au.

Avoid burn out during the silly season ONCE again Christmas is knocking on our doors. In just a few weeks we will be facing highly stressful periods organising yet another unforgettable festive season for our friends and families. We will be organising or family to come and stay with us, organising a massive feasts, presents, and overall a more remarkable experience than in previous years. Unfortunately those experiences come at a cost, and usually also involve eating way too much yummy foods, drinking heaps of alcohol and disagreements with the family. To avoid those kinds of outcomes here are some tips on how to stay on track and not getting completely drained, so we can start the New Year on a positive note. 1. When planning a Christmas feast, create a plan. Write down those ideas that are in your head, so you can actually look at it when its right in front of you. In this way you have clearer idea of what is achievable and realistic, and you can cross off the things that would create only problems and stress for you. 2. Keep it simple and plan from the heart, If you are just trying to impress your family, you just set yourself up for failure, which create regret for you, and your family will not be impressed with you at all. 3. Spend the money you can afford. Nothing worse than starting a new year with your credit card completely maxed out. 4. Presents don’t need to be massive, and expensive. Think of a creative way to give a present. For example, pick out some old photos and put them in a frame with a nice personal note.

5. Start early with your planning and use the time when nobody else is in the shopping centres yet, to buy your gifts. 6. Don’t be afraid to ask your family for help to get things organised or to get some ideas. If your family is involved in the arrangements, they are less likely to critise you for your ‘poor’ performance afterwards, plus it brings more joy and a brings the family closer together. 7. Christmas is the time to drink more alcohol than usual, so stay well hydrated with water, that keeps your body happy , which also means you can easier deal with challenges. 8. Most likely you will be challenged with heaps of yummy food temptations, so make some time to go for walks. You can motivate your entire family to go walking or even for a fun afternoon playing games in the garden or the park. 9. When you start feeling like everything is getting out of your hands, step back and take a deep breath. If you are still not feeling better, take 10 mins and lie in your bed with your eyes closed and just focussing on your breathing. I promise you will feel much better afterwards, and you can take a new approach to solve your problems. 10. If you are still completely stressed out you can give Maple Street Acupuncture a call on 5442 5526 for a treatment to restore your well being. They will be on call during Christmas and New Years, helping you to start the New Year in a healthy and happy way.

Checking for skin cancer

let’s talk hair

SHOULD you go to your GP to have your moles and skin checked or should you go to a specialised skin clinic? How common is skin cancer and is it always caused by the sun? I’ll answer the latter question first. Skin cancer is very common in Australia, in fact our rate of skin cancer is the highest in the world. It is estimated that roughly 70% of Australians will have a skin cancer at some time in their life, usually as they get older. In Queensland this will be even higher. Sun exposure is by far the biggest factor but obviously race and family history of skin cancer influence the likelihood of getting skin cancer. Also certain medications or toxins increase the risk of skin cancer, e.g. those on immunosuppressant drugs after an organ transplant. Skin cancer can be broadly divided into melanoma and non melanoma skin cancers (NMSC). Although the majority of skin cancer is NMSC, the risk of getting melanoma during a lifetime is about 1 in 15. As melanoma is more likely to spread early on to other parts of the body-a process known as metastasise- they have a greater risk of

Dr Kenny Corbett Maple Street Surgery Ph 5447 6644

death associated with them than the NMSC. Therefore they have to be excised with a wide margin of unaffected tissue and doctors have to check both at the time of diagnosis and also at subsequent intervals to make sure there is no sign of spread or recurrence. Some types of NMSC can also metastasise and although this is less likely than melanoma it still needs consideration. The above facts are important to think about when making the decision whether or not to go to a GP or skin clinic. Most skin clinics are staffed by GPs with a special interest in skin cancer. This generally means they will be competent at recognising and treating most types of skin cancer. Equally most GPs have considerable experience in the area. The onus is on the individual doctor to determine the limits of his or her skill level. For example I may feel confident excising a skin cancer on the back of a patient but less confident excising a cancer on the tip of their nose. The vital element here is trust. Do I trust this doctor to recognise their limits and act accordingly in my best interests as a patient? How is trust established? Well, firstly by establishing a doc-

tor patient relationship and working at it through continuity. So I would recommend that it doesn’t really matter where you go to but find a doctor that you trust, who answers your questions, who explains the procedure, performs it well, and ensures good follow up. And stick with them if you are happy with them. Don’t shop around and lose that continuity of care if you feel that your current doctor does a good job. If this is a skin clinic doctor, encourage them to liase with your GP to get a background history, if required, and go back to that same clinic for follow up. At Maple St we are more than happy to perform skin checks and between us are able to deal with the majority of skin cancers. Examining the skin properly for cancers isn’t really something that should be done in 30 seconds and if you require a skin check then make a full 15 minute appointment so that it can be done thoroughly, sometimes with the help of a special skin microscope called a dermatoscope. With summer coming this is a good time to think about skin protection, both with a skin check and by ‘slip, slop, slap’.

Kabara Hostel celebrates quarter century NOOSACARE’S Kabara Hostel in Cooroy recently celebrated 25 years of service to the community. The vision of a home for the aged to serve the hinterlands of the northern Sunshine Coast area was conceived when Mr Archie Jeffs, Chairman of the Noosa District Hospital and Mr bob Powell. Secretary-Manager of the Hospital, visited Toowoomba and Crows News in late 1979 on hospital business, and were given the opportunity to inspect a newly-established Hostel at Crows Nest. A feasibility study, carried out in Cooroy, Pomona, Eumundi and Kenilworth resulted in 80 eligible aged persons declaring their interest

in the project. Negotiations were then conducted with the Land Administration Board and the Noosa Shire Council to acquire 4 ¾ acres of crown land on the Eastern side of the town . A fund raising programme was commenced in 1982 to provide for 30 single motel type units. Kabara was opened in 1987 and has come a long way since them, offering 73 high and low care beds to our ageing community. The name “Kabara” is a word from the Kabi Tribe of Aboriginals that lived in the Cooroy area, meaning ‘a place of rest’ or ‘home’. Happy Birthday Kabara!

HUMANS have been sleeping on various forms of pillows for thousands of years. Substances such as timber, horse hair, cotton and wool have all been used in an attempt to find the ultimate in comfort. If you find yourself waking up with a stiff, sore neck, it is probably time to consider changing the type of pillow that you use. There are a variety of pillows on the market, all reporting to be the best for your neck. So what should you look for? The first thing to consider, is whether you are a side or back sleeper predominantly. Most people tend to end up sleeping on their sides to avoid snoring and this position is often hard to support in terms of the neck. When we sleep on our sides, the shoulder

causes the head to either tilt down towards the pillow (if using a thin pillow) or tilt upwards (if using 2 pillows or a thicker pillow). This incorrect alignment puts undue stress on the neck joints and causes tightness to develop in the neck musculature. The correct shape of a posture pillow includes a slight hollow for the head to rest in, a raised section for supporting the natural curve of the neck and an indent to cradle the shoulder. The next decision is the type of material that the pillow is made out of. This could be traditional foam, memory foam or latex. The type of material chosen should be based on personal preference and the size of the sleeper. Larger people will require a more dense material to en-

sure adequate support from the pillow. Don’t assume that the most expensive is necessarily the best. Try a variety of pillows to decide on the most comfortable material for your pillow. The final decision to be made is what size of pillow. If a pillow is too low or high, it will not allow for correct alignment of the spine. Many good pillows are now adjustable which allows the user to personalise the shape of the pillow to suit their needs. If you would like further advice on pillows, contact your local health provider for more information. Craig and Rebecca Steele at Hinteractive Physio stock a variety of pillows which may be suitable for your needs. They can be contacted on 5442 5556.

sport Another success for the Impact boxing team

COOROY RAG IT was another successful night at the office for the Impact boys when they travelled to Caboolture to compete. The Impact crew won 3 out of 4 fights for the night. Cian Jones was first up for the Impact boys. Cian fought the final for the 34kg National Golden gloves. After a very close fight Jones was crowned the National champ! Next up was Alec AirdCardiff. Alec took a step up to take on the current State title holder Bailey McGoughran. These two 10 yr olds gave the crowd an awesome display of boxing skills as they both boxed superbly. Bailey was awarded the decision in

L-R Cian Jones, Alec Aird-Cardiff, Tai Hawkins, Sam Cameron-Hands a very close fight. These boys are now destined to meet again at the State titles on November 30 where they will battle for the 32kg title. Tai Hawkins domi-

match with Mitch Mackie from Bundaberg. Mackie was looking to avenge his last loss to Sam but again Sam proved to be to strong and aggres-

swimming and basketball, all at State and National levels. Kie is a real inspiration, as in his spare time he volunteers at both the Riding for the Disabled Association in Yandina, and teaching basketball at the Nambour and Currimundi Special Schools. Most people would come home after the competition for a rest, but not Kie he is already back into training and hoping to compete at a State level in basketball next year.

EUMUNDI Tennis Club hosted a mixed doubles tournament and social day, on Sunday. In celebration of the centenary for the Eumundi School of Arts, the club revisited the period, playing with wooden racquets and dressed in clothing of the era. The club is renowned for its annual wooden racquet tournament “The Eumundi Timber Challenge”. Tournament organisers Paul Curtis & Chris Etheridge felt a celebration of tennis in Eumundi during the centenary was a perfect way to complement this historical event. “Tennis played a big part in the social lives of many in early day Eumundi,” Chris said. , The trophy is dedicated to the memory of Bessie Etheridge who passed away this year, age 97. “Bessie often spoke to me about district tennis in her youth and her lifelong love of the game,” Paul said.

SEVEN rowing competitors from the Noosa hinterland collected six gold medals and two silvers at the biennial Pan Pacific Masters Games at the Gold Coast this month. President Bob Upham said it was an excellent result and would help the club as it opens its arms to new members. Numbers have already swelled this year with an influx of rowers from the Mary Valley, many of them new to the sport and encouraged by the promised benefits to total body fitness, stress relief, weight loss and flexibility. Mr Upham said rowing was a sport that you could enjoy solo or as part of a social group, and participants

who join others in doubles, quads or eights benefited from being an integral part of a team – learning to row in synchronization. Members row every day on the beautiful waters of Lake McDonald near Cooroy, but if the weather turns for the worst, you can always head indoors and perfect your

technique on a rowing machine at the gym. The Noosa Boat Club was formed in 2008 and has forged a strong partnership with members of the local fish hatchery who have provided storage space for boats and gear above the breeding tanks in their shed. Mr Upham competed at the Pan Pacifics

alongside other members Linda Grams, Di Crouch, Carol Johnson, John Cutmore, Rachel Mecham and Paul Kerr. It was the second regatta event for Carol Johnson, who won her first gold medal. Club members are coached in-house by other accredited members who have rowed in the Queensland State masters team and won events at world masters games. “It is this depth of experience that helps new rowers learn to love the sport and we enjoy sharing our passion for rowing with them,” Mr Upham said. The eighth Pan Pacific games were held at Coomera on the Gold Coast and some 12,000 participants from 26

countries competed in 38 sports during the carnival. No qualifying standards or times are required to enter the Pan Pacific Masters Games. The only criterion is that participants meet the minimum age requirement for their respective sport, which for the majority is 30 years of age. To find out more about learn to row courses and membership at the Noosa Boat Club, contact rowing captain Sian Hebron 0435 043039. Noosa Boat Club members return with medals from the eighth Pan Pacific Masters Games at the Gold Coast. A keen rower sets off from the boat ramp at Lake McDonald near Cooroy.
