A bridge too far If you want to enter or leave Cooroy, at the railway bridge, The motorist has lots of things to keep in mind, First you have to brave the junction, the town side of the bridge, With traffic coming from the front, and also front behind. Across the bridge, and from the town, it’s pretty thick at times, As well there is the highway, and the Golf Course too, And when you add school buses, and schoolies parents’ cars, You could finish with a log jam, a very lengthy queue. While mostly it’s just waiting, with your knickers in a knot, Annoyed with all those drivers, who should be giving way, Watching them sail down the slope, past the Give Way sign, A sign they clearly have no intention, to properly obey.

You’d think that the traffic boffins, the ones that rule our roads, Would have done things better, and planned some years ahead, But perhaps it would be the wise solution, and lots less trouble too, To leave the lines, the bridge, the signs, and move the town instead!!

Rick Cooper and Wayne Hoens celebrate another good year for shareholders WHILE the rest of the world continues to patiently work through its ongoing economic challenges, it’s a far different story for investors in three of the coast’s Community Bank® branches. In fact it’s a continuing celebration of a real home-grown Sunshine Coast success story. Nearly 790 share holders, who have supported the Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin Community Bank® branches since their inception (with the Cooroy Community Bank® Branch opening in 2002) will now receive their fourth dividend in as many years. Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin Community Bank® branches Chairman Rick Cooper, said shareholders will each receive a share of the $136,339 the total dividend, based on 8.0 cents per share of 1,704,238 fully paid shares once the dividend is issued on 21 December. He said it will be a nice Christmas present for the company’s’ investors. “The result is a culmination of a lot of hard work and local support from the Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin and surrounding communities. As we often say, bank with us and everybody benefits,” Mr. Cooper said. “The directors of the Community Bank® Company have decided the dividend is a fair reward to all the

shareholders who initially funded the establishment of the branches and who have been patiently watching their development. It’s the fourth dividend in as many years for our share holders and our SCCFSL board, branch managers and staff are very proud of our continuing work in our communities. “Without share holders’ support, our branches simply wouldn’t exist,” Mr. Cooper added. Tewantin Community Bank branch manager, Wayne Hoens says the shareholders won’t be the only locals to benefit from the fourth dividend. “The company’s remaining profits are being channelled back into the Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin communities via a range of donations, sponsorships and scholarships. By June 2012, the total funds given back to the community will have exceeded $795,000. “In coming months the board will continue its program of community grants that will release further funds into our communities to assist with a wide range of projects. We’re really proud to be involved with a bank that’s giving locals a real say in the shaping of their own communities,” Mr. Hoens said.

IT has taken 16 years from when the renovation plans for the Memorial Hall were originally drawn up in 1995 to get close to realisation with the ‘Cooroy Project” as it is fondly dubbed nearing readiness for its application for funding with the RDA. This project, involving the refurbishment and redevelopment of the Memorial Hall, is a major and much needed initiative that will address many needs of the community and offer opportunities for economic benefit to the town and the shire. Below is a summary of some of these needs in response to various requests and community consultations since 1995. Total Kitchen rebuild to Commercial standard so that community members may hire for preparing product for the markets and private enterprise. New toilets that will be located in an extension to the Club side of the building; A storeroom for the stacking of tables and chairs; New tables and chairs; Refurbished bar; Refurbished office including fibre optic technology for economic development opportunities; Soundproof stacker doors for the “carpeted area” so this can be closed off for community meetings leaving the balance of the hall still available to hire; Refurbishment of all floors, the stage area etc.; Repainting of interior & exterior; Lowering of the raised floor in the dining/kitchen area; Insulation to the building and removal of asbestos; Works necessary to meet current Fire Regulations; Solar heating – under floor and for water; Natural cooling through passive improvements including a covered deck on the western side and an extra gable on the eastern side; Memorial Corridor and feature walls for the memorabilia; New audio/visual equipment including youth programs i.e. Wii; Sealed Car park at the back of the hall. All of these works will enhance and highlight the era of the building, and give the com-

munity a venue that is suitable for all current uses and some new ones including weddings, theatre, cultural events and business pursuits. There are also opportunities to address requests for a “community hub” that can combine activities & access to outdoor activities for youth, as well as hosting a Mentoring Program to capitalise the immense experience that Cooroy hosts in its retiree sector. The office in the Hall could be used by a Community Liaison Officer, who can provide a much needed service of keeping the community up to date on all matters relevant to Cooroy and its residents. Most importantly, this project has the ability and scope to bring economic benefit to Cooroy through the provision of jobs. This is multi faceted - not only from increased usage of the Hall and introduction of new events, but also from two major initiatives. The first is the “virtual markets” to provide a retail side for “Seasons of the Sun” which has pooled all producers on the Sunshine Coast into an alliance. The second is for specialised adult hospitality training, targeting the ongoing gap on the Sunshine Coast for staff that can provide the friendly, efficient and knowledgeable service required to accompany our food and outlets. To be successful with this project, we need your assistance in two ways by a) sending a letter of support outlining the need for this project and it’s importance at this time, especially with the current local economy and b) a letter with any further items that you believe could be addressed through this project that can assist you and the community. There will be a display at the Hall on Tuesday December 6 at 5pm with the draft plans and elevations, and a further opportunity for you to bring along any further ideas for inclusion. Class. Entry in this class also allows teams to include more innovation in their design and the GEM engineers did this by incorporating many features which were unique and untested by other teams. As the supervising teacher I was told by one of the engineering judges that the use of synthetic sapphire bearings and the variable wing design used by the five boys was outstanding and second only to the winners F1 Super Geeks from Pine Rivers High School. The Pine Rivers team have had National Finals experience having competed in this year’s competition and picking up several awards so the GEM result was very close to causing an upset. Noosa District Development Class team

“High Voltage Racing” were the stars of the day with the following awards: Best Team Collaboration; Best Development Class Portfolio; Best Engineered Car; and First Place winners in Development Class. Their win entitles them to represent Queensland in the 2012 National Championships to be held in Adelaide from 17th February to 3rd March. This event will also coincide with the Clipsal 500 V8 supercar race which all national finalists will attend. track – of all teams present! This was highly unusual as the Development Class cars must use standard wheels, axles and bearings and they are restricted to using a single machine process to fabricate the balsa wood car body. news Community meets for local project funding Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy ONE of the best parts about working for a bank is that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re often able to meet and interact with many people in your community. You see some people on the street and say hello, and you may even handle banking services for them. Others you collaborate with when working on projects and sponsorships that the bank supports. Others you see at a networking functions or local sporting events, but seldom do get the opportunity to bring everyone together in one place at one time. Recently, I had such an opportunity. Our Community Bank branch in Cooroy coordinated and hosted a Community Forum for Cooroy and surrounding communities. This forum has held for the purpose of getting together as many people with ideas and passion around our communities and its betterment. It was an ideal platform for bringing everyone together. This was held on November 9 at Cooroy State Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wonderful new hall. We had more than 100 people attend and these people represented many and varied organisations in the area from local and sporting groups, church groups, volunteer organisations, local businesses and schools. We had a variety of age groups represented which was terrific. It was particularly great to see a number of school students from Noosa District High School, and even the school leaders from the Cooroy State School were represented with their pre-prepared ideas around desired projects they would like to see happen in the area. These ideas were them put forward by one of their teachers. Everyone really valued the ideas from the youth. So often we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get to hear their thoughts around projects that they would like to see evolve.

The night was really energetic and insightful! Attendees were obviously passionate about their ideas about Cooroy and surrounding communities and there were some obvious similarities around some of the identified projects which is terrific. Additionally what unfolded was that some of the desired projects are already underway and people were simply unaware of this. The ideas were many and varied, and by the end of the night votes for the top projects identified were: â&#x20AC;˘ A second railway crossing in Conroy; â&#x20AC;˘ Modifications to Cooroyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Swimming pool to accommodate heating and disability access; â&#x20AC;˘ Improvements to phone reception in the Conroy and surrounding areas; â&#x20AC;˘ An RV park in the area: â&#x20AC;˘ More opportunities for economic development in the area, and: â&#x20AC;˘ Emergency accommodation for single men. Going forward, what we hope to assist with as a Community Bank is coordinate some of these projects and perhaps contribute some of the funds required. In particular we will look to partner with local groups and government bodies to make some of the identified projects come to life. I thank everyone for coming along and for their enthusiasm and participation in a great evening.

Wellington’s Way With Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington COOROY to Curra upgrade goes on display: At long last the Government has released the proposed upgrade of the Bruce Highway from Cooroy to Sankeys Road. I am pleased that the Government listened to our calls for improvements to the proposed location of the Cudgerie community’s access to the highway. I urge all interested parties to look at the proposal and make comment. There will be a copy of the upgrade information available in my Nambour office. You may be eligible for a service medal: I recently met with the present of the Sunshine Coast National Servicemen’s (Qld) Association Pat Tempest who is keen to hear from retired Australian defence service people who may be unaware that they are eligible for some service medals. He is trying to contact servicemen and women who are eligible for an Anniversary of National Service Medal and/or the Defence Medal. Apparently many of the old service records are unreliable, and the Association is urging servicemen and women or former service people to contact the Sunshine Coast secretary of the Association for information about their eligibility. You can ring the secretary on 54913561 or write to the Sunshine Coast National Servicemen’s Association at: PO Box 352 Moffat Beach, 4551 for further information. Eden celebrates 10 years: It was great to be able to join the team at Cooroy’s Eden Rehabilitation Centre recently to help celebrate 10 years operation in this community. The centre is the only private rehabilitation hospital between Brisbane and Cairns, and offers both hospital stay care or day therapy and other outpatient programs. During the 10th birthday celebration, there was special recognition for the many volunteers who assist at the centre and to the supportive community. Neighbourhood Disputes Act: Copies of the Neighbourhood Disputes Resolution Act are now available at my office. I have had many inquiries from residents who have had concerns about overhanging trees and boundary fences, but been unable to reach agreement with neighbours about possible solutions. This amended legislation should clear up confusion about neighbours’ responsibilities regarding these issues. If you have made an inquiry through my office for a copy of this legislation but have still not received it, please drop in to my Currie Street, Nambour office, or phone us on 5441 6933. Community Update INNER Cooroy Link Road: Last month I, along with other staff from council, hosted a successful community meeting about the Jarrah Street extension, at Cooroy Hall which was attended by about 60 residents. At the meeting I presented the background to the 10 year history and community consultation on this project and council’s technical experts also talked about the research that lead to the decision to construct the road. The community had the opportunity to voice concerns and council’s infrastructure department has taken on board those comments. Council is already looking at, and addressing, some of the concerns raised, such as design of the pedestrian refuge near the Garnet Square shops, speed signs along Garnet Street and car parks interfering with sight lines from Oak Street, pathways in Garnet Street and road pavement resurfacing. This long awaited link road is progressing at a fantastic pace, and should be completed by the first half of next year. Council Cabs – help for the community: If you, or someone you know, finds it difficult to get into town, Council Cabs may be able to help. Council Cabs is especially tailored for residents with disabilities and those aged over 60. The service picks you up from your home, drops you off at your local shops, and drives you home in the afternoon. Council provides the subsidised scheme, with funding from the Transport Levy, for an affordable fixed fare of $2 (each way) per trip. The Council Cabs service is available once a week to eligible resi-

dents in most areas of the Sunshine Coast. These areas include: Pomona, Cooran, Cooroy, Black Mountain, Cooroy Mountain, Lake McDonald, Tewantin, and Cooroibah. Carers and children of eligible passengers are also able to use the service. Booking a cab is simple, just call 1300 139 433 by 12.30pm the day before your travel (24 hour booking line). De-bunking the dog baiting myths: You may have noticed the subject of wild dog baiting on the Sunshine Coast has seen its fair share of media attention of late. Judging by a number of the stories that have been aired and printed, there appears to be a fair degree of misunderstanding when it comes to this issue. Council’s wild dog baiting program is a coordinated effort that involves State government agencies and private property owners. The baiting is performed twice a year and baits are only ever placed on private property. Before any baiting occurs, council writes to all residences within a 1k radius of the bait site to request consent. All residences within 2km of a baiting site are also sent notification letters in the mail. Every bait is placed at least 500m from the nearest residence. The baits themselves are tied and buried under the ground (so birds and other animals can’t get to them) and after seven days they’re checked and removed. Council’s wild dog baiting and trapping program has been in place since 2002. The program was initiated as a response to community need. Council is not actively imposing this baiting and trapping pro-

gram on the local community but rather responding to the community’s requests that measures be taken to control wild dog populations. Cooroy library: It’s hard to believe the Cooroy Library opened its doors less than 2 years ago. Before the doors even opened, council’s Cooroy Community Precinct Manager Tracey King was hard at work behind the scenes to ensure that from day one, the library was a welcoming and vibrant place. Tracey has recently headed off on maternity leave and I’m sure the many regular visitors who have come to know Tracey will join me in wishing her all the best. In brief: • Three new bicycle hoops will soon be installed outside the Mountain Stop Café in Pomona to help meet the parking needs of cyclists. • There will be a number of Division 12 areas undergoing roadworks over the next couple of months as part of council’s Capital Works Road Reseal and Rehabilitation Program. COOROY RAG Letters to the editor IT was one of those mediocre days a couple of days ago, claimed by the feel of neither feeling happy or sad. Certainly the day lacked any sparkle until surprise surprise! My very dear daughter-in-law walked into this Bowder Lodge bed-sit where I now reside bringing with her half a dozen copies of the recent publications of the Cooroy Rag. You lucky people to have such a vibrant township with people contributing to the essential make up of a delightful and well presented publication. I still remember contributing to the then much smaller editions of the Cooroy Rag. I was as happy as a pig in mud to find mention of locals known but not seen in many years. I have warm memories of Bob Abbot, and David Kirkman with his glorious mop of hair and diamond stud. I remember the simple routine of a predictable lifestyle. Who could now visualise the cream truck driver delivering meat, groceries or mail to the highway on the lengthy route between Pomona towards Gympie. I can vouch for mail, unsealed dropped off during the bean growing season, left by the carrier. Valuable items were left at the cream boxes, bean cheques included, with the envelope unsealed. Fancy trusting anything at all exposed to today’s congested roadways? One remembers the bypass road from Skyring Creek to Cooroy being an engineering feat. First big wet the 70ft cutting cut off the highway and back all the traffic had to travel through Pomona. I must thank you for the recently acquired newspaper items of interest contained in the Cooroy Rag. Many of us, now elderly, derive such satisfaction from thoroughly perusing such local coverage. XMAS and Friendship songs at our last Luncheon from the State Primary School, gave us some absolutely beautiful children singing and wonderful feelings to us all. We have a lot of support in our community as with 2 new members joining our ranks. Also recently we had 19 meet at Betty Waters Home for Brunch. Thanks Betty. Our AGM saw VIEW Clubs of Australia QB02 Zone councillor Judy Fischle re elect the committee with the added come back of Gwen Edwards to fill the bill. Robert Menzies (author) told of his travels and experiences and had two books for us to hear about. Our next social will be a craft and chat day at the Retirement Village Hall in Ferrell’s Road on Tuesday 29 th December at 11am. $2.00 donation to SMITH Family and bring a plate. Xmas will be on our mind but we enjoy a good chin wag as well. Many of us have been venturing to other VIEW Clubs in the areas with Noosaville VIEW’s “Pretty in Pink” Twin Water’s VIEW “Stardust” and a Gala Luncheon “Aussie Bush Xmas” at Caboolture. Some of our members were visiting Brisbane for the very first time ! Staying at the Manor Apartments, next door to the GPO, had us within walking distance to the Queens Street Mall - the shoppers amongst us were delighted ! All forms of transport were at our doorstep giving us direct access to all this beautiful city has to offer. Our senior’s ‘go cards’ were well used ! With a list of recommended ‘things to do while in Brisbane’ and only two pre booked tours - one to Parliament House, the other to St John’s Cathedral, members had the time and flexibility to plan their own day. Small groups scattered throughout

the city enjoying walks along South Bank, rides on the River Cat, and visits to the galleries, museums and shows. The gardens too were popular - a dazzling display of colour, fragrance and design. At night, we gathered back together for dinner and to share stories of the days adventures. Refreshed and energised we were out again, this time to the theatre, the opera, the casino or for a ride on the Wheel. Wonderful to have so much choice. These few days away with our Probus friends proved it is not necessary to have a rigid schedule of prepaid/ preorganised activities to have a great time. Fun and good fellowship can be contagious. Returning to Cooroy, all agreed how lucky we are to have all this so close to home.

A NUMBER of search warrants were executed by Cooroy Police during the month of November with four offenders charged with offences including Break and Enter, possession of stolen property, stealing and possession of dangerous drugs and utensils. These actions were a direct result of a spike in our break and enter offences around town and were successful from the point of view of solving some of our crime in town and holding the offenders to account. A 16 year old youth was also dealt with by police after being found in possession of stolen property from the Noosa District High School. With the party season and the end of school year upon us it is timely to remind the general public of their responsibilities in regards the supply of alcohol to minors at private parties and on private land. Most of us would be aware that it is a serious offence to supply alcohol to a person under the age of 18 years in a public place or on licensed premises but not so many of us would be aware that supplying alcohol to minors at a private party is also a serious offence. Section 156A of the Liquor Act 1992 states:- • An adult must not supply liquor to a minor at a private place unless they are a responsible adult for the minor; • A responsible adult is the parent, step-parent guardian or an adult who has parental rights and responsibilities for the minor; • The responsible adult must be responsibly supervising the minor. In considering whether the supply of alcohol is consistent with the responsible supervision of the minor, relevant factors include the following– (a) whether the adult is unduly intoxicated; (b) whether the minor is unduly intoxicated; (c) the age of the minor; (d) whether the minor is consuming the liquor

supplied with food; (e) whether the adult is responsibly supervising the minor’s consumption of the liquor supplied; (f) the quantity of liquor supplied and the period over which it was supplied. Where police lawfully attend a party and persons under the age of 18 years can be seen unduly intoxicated and acting badly then it seems obvious that proper supervision by responsible adults is not occurring so in this instance police could commence court proceedings against adults at the party who have been supplying liquor to the minors. The penalty for this offence is a maximum fine of $6000 and the indignity of a court appearance. If you are considering hosting a underage party please consider the above points and if in any doubt re your responsibilities in this regard please contact your local police station. Several local hoons have had their wings clipped of late thanks to members of the public being proactive and assisting police with the apprehension of these idiots. On the 18th of November a 21 year old Nandroya Rd man was caught drifting sideways around a roundabout in a high powered turbo charged vehicle with a 15 year old girl seated next to him. In another foolish act of driving a 32 year old Kauri street man was charged with a serious driving offence when he was seen doing circle work in Kauri street by a member of the public who phoned police with a registration number which led to the driver being sent to court by police. With the amount of black tyre marks on the roads around Cooroy at present we are very intent on bringing this type of driving to an end so please continue to report cars driving badly to the Cooroy Police on 54425030. A comment also has to be made in relation to the numerous children out on the streets unsuper-

vised by their parents on Halloween night. Some of the kids were accompanied by their parents and most behaved well but as with most things the actions of a few have ruined things for the majority. Several instances of youths acting like louts by egging houses and shouting obscenities to residents who did not hand over goodies have been reported to police. In a cowardly and despicable act, a male and female youth aged approximately 15 years knocked on the door of an 84 year old gentleman residing in Crystal Street, Cooroy asking for trick or treats. The kindly gentleman went to the kitchen to look for something to give them and whilst he was away from the door the youths entered his house and stole his wallet containing a large amount of pension money, which was to go to food and medicine. If you’re like me and are sitting there shaking your head with steam coming out of your ears then join the club as I have been approached by numerous community members who have offered to deal with the offenders by means not able to be mentioned in this column. What type of person would do this to an 84 year old?? Enough said but I would greatly appreciate any information from anyone who has knowledge of the below described offenders. Both suspects were wearing Halloween masks, the male described as being approximately 15 years of age, with an orange mask and a black robe and thin in build. The female was short and heavy wearing a witch’s hat, a mask and a cape. We would love to catch up with these two offenders so we could at least give some form of justice back to the victim.

Residents warned of heightened fire danger FIREFIGHTERS across the North Coast Region are reminding residents, particularly those located across the western areas, to remain vigilant following a spate of vegetation fires in recent days. The dry vegetation in the area combined with high to very high fire danger had the potential for even a small fire to spread quickly and threaten surrounding homes, other structures or even lives. Although at this stage of the year the bushfire season would typically be coming to an end, over the coming days and leading into the holiday period the combination of dry grassland and humidity in the area means the threat of bushfire is still very real. All residents are urged to do their part to decrease the risk of fire by taking care with cigarette butts, power tools and machinery and also educating others of potential bushfire danger. As there is the potential for a bad fire season with the hot, dry conditions we have been having, we are available to do an education evening for prepare, act, survive bush fire safety. by Carol Watkins, Deputy Local Controller, Sunshine Coast North WE’VE been quite busy once again with some ‘out of the ordinary’ happenings since we last went to press. On a Friday and Saturday night recently, 14 of our members were on hand to assist local police with welfare and traffic control at large operations on the Bruce Highway north of Cooroy. These types of operations, while running for significant lengths of time, are useful to us as they allow our people to maintain their competencies in activities such as traffic control, and put into use training done in running generators, emergency lighting and radio communications. SES Week 2011 ran recently and congratulations must go to Evelyn Buchanan from Pomona Group who was awarded an SES Week Award for “Dedication and consistency, particularly as Deputy Group leader representing her absent Group Leader”. Congratulations must also go to some of our members who, on a recent weekend, were about to start flood boat training at Tewantin, when an elderly gentleman drove off the wharf into the water. Their training kicked in, they instantly jumped in calling out for 000 to be telephoned, pulled him up above water and attended to him until ambulance and paramedics arrived to look after him. Each year we receive numerous calls for as-

sistance to members of our community who have thought a bit of water over the road is not an issue. Some have even ignored road closure signs. This is extremely dangerous behaviour. It is imperative you think about the consequences of your actions which can endanger your, and others’ lives. Flood waters can look extremely attractive to children – the chance to body surf, swim and splash around. Doing this is also extremely dangerous and children’s lives have been lost when playing in and around flood water. Some rules to observe at times of flood include: don’t drive through floodwater; stay away from drains, knee-deep water, fallen powerlines and trees; don’t allow children to play in, or near floodwater; avoid entering floodwater; if it’s essential, wear solid shoes and check the depth and current with a stick; don’t use gas or electrical appliances which have been in floodwater until they’ve been checked for safety by a registered gasfitter or electrician; throw away food that has been exposed to floodwater. Sub-branch Santa Sleigh THE Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub-Branch will have our Santa Sleigh in the foyer of the RSL Memorial Club for December 1st and 2nd. THE Cooroy library will once again have coffee and snacks thanks to Two Sisters of Cooroy who will begin running Library Espresso in December 2011. They will be serving coffees, teas, and pre-packaged hand-made food that celebrate the local area. Two Sisters of Cooroy is a business partnership between Anika and Katerina Annels. Both girls were brought up in Cooroy, attending Cooroy State School and Noosa District High. Katerina is a gourmet chef and has worked around the world, including on luxury private yachts in the Mediterranean, as well as hotels and restaurants in London and Italy. Before going onto great things around the world, Katerina started work at Pinto Thai and Bistro Bistro here in Cooroy but once away, she missed the beauty of our place and its outstanding products. Anika is passionate about coffee and art. She paints and pots and has been a long-term volunteer helping teach art at the Cooroy primary school as well as running her own Mudlark Pottery. Together, both girls are in search of

the perfect coffee as well as dreaming of white hot chocolates in mugs too big to ignore. The sisters are hoping that their nook in the library becomes a place for both body and soul, with local foods and drinks among the books. Katerina, the older of the two sisters says “We will be launching Library Espresso on December 5th , and look forward to providing great coffee, great customer service to the visitors of the library. Loyalty cards will be available to all who spread the word of this new micro-business. It is exciting to have learnt so much from my overseas travel that I can now bring back to Cooroy.” Opening hours will be trialled from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday, but will remain flexible and change on demand. There will be free coffees at the launch for library patrons to celebrate the opening of the Library Espresso by Anika and Katerina Annels, the Two Sisters of Cooroy. East Side versus West Side Traders in tug o’ war THE long running friendly feud between traders on the east and west side of the train tracks will be officially waged in a Tug of War at Christmas in Cooroy. This brand new addition to the program was the brain child of Denise Noonan of Quick Snip and the challenge was quickly taken up by enthusiastic traders on both sides of the tracks. “This was such a great, fun idea that the Christmas in Cooroy committee was keen to add it to the program. We will just have the one heat with a mixed team representing various businesses from each side of the tracks for the inaugural event but we can all see that it could develop in future years. It is

one of those quirky events that really suit Christmas in Cooroy. Volunteers wanted POMONA and District Kindergarten held it’s annual obsta-thon this week. It was a fun-filled morning of activity where the children of the kindy did 5 laps around an obstacle course and received a medal for all their hard work. Every lap was sponsored by family members or the greater community to help with fundraising as the kindy is a not for profit organization which relies heavily on it’s fundraising resources. A garage sale will help with the de cluttering of your property before you put your house on the market. It is also a perfect way to prepare you to move house. It will make you money and cut down on your costs by getting rid of unnecessary junk before you start to pack. I have found over the years in order for your garage sale to be a success there are a couple of key factors which must come into play which I will share with you. Firstly Choosing A Date. This should be done at least a month before to give you plenty of time to sort through, wash and clean any items that you are going to put for sale. Saturday’s tend to be the best day early in the mornings. Sunday’s are traditionally a day for relaxing with the family. Advertise Your Sale. There is no point having a garage sale if no-

body knows it’s on. Advertise in your local paper, put up posters and signs in the street and on the community notice boards. There are regular garage sale goers so it may pay to advertise online www.egarage sales.com.au is a popular choice for online garage sale hunters. It is important to put your address and the times which the garage sale will start and finish. Pricing & Displaying Your Wares. It is important that you price & display your items for sale properly. Clothing is always popular so if you can display it on racks or string a line up to show it off to its best advantage. WELL school holidays are just around the corner and Christmas is less than a month away, so many of us will be packing up the cars and starting the traditional road trip. For many people though, the thought of long car drives makes them cringe, with the memories of back aches and neck stiffness flooding back quickly. But it needn’t be such a painful experience! With some easy tips and a few exercises, you’ll be arriving at your destination full of the Christmas spirit instead of a belly full of paracetamol. But like most things, preparation is the key. If you have any niggling problems, get them sorted out before you go away. This way, you are starting your trip in good physical condition, rather than having to stop half way for urgent treatment. If you have room in your vehicle, be sure to pack your own pillows. This reduces those “wry” necks when you wake on the first morning of sleeping in a strange bed with a strange pillow. Next step- check your car set-up. Make sure that your seat is adjusted to provide optimum lumbar support and reduced arm straining to reach the steering wheel. Headrests need to be positioned so that they are not pushing the head forward, as this will cause neck pain and stiffness. Most people, and especially those with back pain, will find that the inbuilt lumbar support in their car seats is not enough to support the lower back on a long drive. Lumbar rolls

(round or d-shaped foam rolls) are a cheap and effective way to support the lower back while driving. They are simply placed in the curve of the lower back between the chair and the spine, and help to hold the natural lumbar curvature of the spine. Place your backside as far back in the chair as it will go, to help reduce “slouching”. Try and stop every hour or so to reduce muscle and joint fatigue. Simply go for a short walk and try the following stretches. 1. Place your hands in the hollow in the lower back and gently arch backwards as far as comfortable. Repeat this 5-10 times. 2. Place one heel on the ground with the toes pulled back. Lean forward, poking the bottom out the back until you feel the stretch in the back of the thigh. Hold 20 seconds and sway sides. 3. Stretch your neck by looking on a diagonal into your armpit. Hold 20 seconds and swap sides. Obviously, if you have any specific problems you should consult a therapist before you go, to get more specific exercises for your body. So with regular breaks, not only will you be protecting yourself from driver fatigue, but you will be doing your body a favour. OSTEOPOROSIS is weak or brittle bones due to a loss of bone density within the bone. This makes them more likely to fracture especially with mild impact-minimal trauma fractures. How common a problem is it? Well about 40% of women over the age of 50 will develop an osteoporotic fracture and for men over the age of 60 the figure is about 30%. Unfortunately most people only realise they’ve got osteoporosis after they get the associated fracture. They can get still get treated for osteoporosis but to a certain extent the horse has bolted. The main risk factor for osteoporosis is age but in addition younger adults can get it if they have a family history of oesteoporosis, take long term steroid medication, have poor absorption of minerals in the gut, e.g. coeliac disease, have overactive thyroid, having chronic kidney disease, having low body weight, and are heavy smokers and drinkers. There are other conditions that can contribute. The main bones likely to fracture are the spine, the hip and the wrist but any bone can break depending on how you fall. Breaking a bone at any time is bad enough but a bad fracture in the elderly may have significant implications for both quality of life and life expectancy. But rather than wait around to diagnose osteoporosis after having suffered a fracture it is much more sensible to try and diagnose osteoporosis prior to the fracture. However even if you have had a minimal trauma fracture it is not too late to get investigated for osteoporosis. Only about 10% of those who have sustained a fracture get investigated for osteoporosis after the fracture so it is important for doctors and patients to be more proactive. Once the diagnosis is made, what can be done to treat osteoporosis? First priority is to try and maintain bone density by regular weight bearing or resistance exercise. Say 3-4 times per week for 30 minutes each time. This stimulates the bone through loading and keeps it healthy. Many of us as we age have low Vitamin D levels so often taking Vitamin D and Calcium supplements are an important factor. There are a wide range of drugs now available to treat osteoporosis. They decrease your risk of minimal impact fracture by about 30%. They can be taken as daily, weekly or monthly tablets, by 6 monthly injections under the skin, or by yearly infusion into a vein. They are often given in combination with daily Vitamin D and Calcium supplements. How do we diagnose osteoporosis? This can be done by a Bone Density scan. This is available through Medicare if you are greater than 70 years of age or if you are less than 70 but have one of the above risk factors. CONGRATULATIONS to our students and staff for their effort in embracing events designed to support fundraising for community groups. On Thursday, October 13th our students and staff ‘donned the pink’ to support the Cooroy Pink Precinct day. Participants were asked to purchase a passport for a gold coin donation to support the cause, raising money and awareness for Breast Cancer Research. There was a good turn out of both Noosa High staff and students, par-

ticularly year 12 students. Mr Tony Leigh Sheridan, Head of Support Services, won the prize for best costume, which was impressive, if a little warm on the day. There were other head-turners; Mz Louize Lyle, Head of Performing Arts was hardly recognizable in a pink wig and over-sized sunglasses and Lacee Smith-Cripps was positively angelic. Other benefits included finding out about some of the interesting nooks in Cooroy Business Precinct and exercising on such a beautiful morning.

Great night out workout shed style THE Workout Shed and crew celebrated its 1st Birthday at The Cooroy Hotel Function Room on Friday November 19th. Patrons to the hotel might have wondered what the heck was going on as willing partiers took on some very silly challenges. Needless to say a huge night of laughs was had by all. Best mates share the medals

Clinton and Tyron with medals from the Nationals THE sporting spotlight was focused on Noosa Aquatic Centre for the Inaugural National Down Syndrome Short Course Swimming Championships and Novice Challenge. Swimmers from all over Australia and New Zealand came for a weekend of competition and fun. The sky was blue and the sun rays were as radiant as the smiles on the faces of the swimmers as the Opening Ceremony commenced. Included in the championships were best mates Tyron Brown and Clinton Stanley from Cooroy. The competition wasn’t just for world champion swimmers, the event included some swimmers competing for the first time. Where better to start at a National level. Tyron competed in six novice events winning Gold in the 50m Freestyle and Silver in the 25m Freestyle. Tyron’s mate Clinton competed in 6 Champi-

onships events. Clinton won gold medals for 400m and 800m Freestyle breaking 2 Masters 35 years and over World Records along the way. He also won 2 silver and 2 bronze medals. He finished with a total of 4 World Records. Tyron and Clinton showed great sportsmanship congratulating each other on their achievements; with plenty of high fives. There were so many highlights over the weekend. A letter to the swimmers from The Prime Minister Julia Gillard. The dinner held on Saturday night for 180 competitors, families and officials. The wonderful presentation stage built on the water, a dream come true. Who dares to say magic doesn’t happen. Many great swimmers were on hand to give out lucky lane prizes and to congratulate the swimmers during the 2 days. The Down Syndrome Down Under Swimming Organisation’s Ambassador Jessicah Schipper came to present medals also Nick Darcy, Melanie Schlanger, Chris Wright, Patron Hayden Kenny, even John Konrads popped in to say hello and have his photo taken with the swimmers. The best thing of all was the lovely Commemorative Medallion every swimmer received They were all Winners at the Championships. The event was made even more special as it was “Disability Awareness Week” Swimmers competing worn shirts with the logo “Energized with an extra chromosome”. The event raised awareness of the pathways available for swimmers with Down syndrome to compete from club level through to the highest level of representing Australia. Sue Stanley Meet Director

COMPETITIVE girls from Cooroy Gymnastics Club have had huge success this month competing at first the Gympie Invitational Competition and then the Mitchelton Youth Club Invitational Competition. Girls in levels 1-5 competed with outstanding results in all levels with many competing a new level and new skills on each apparatus. We would like to congratulate the level 4 and 5 girls on level testing and qualifying for State Championships. We wish the girls all the best in all their competitions to come and are so proud of the hard work they have put in this year.
