Cooroy wins in Christmas Spirit stakes MARY VALLEY LIFESTYLE

IT’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas, thanks to a wonderful group of Christmas elves who have been hard at work for months to put together the magical community celebration that is Christmas in Cooroy. The first sign of all this hard work appeared on Saturday when a record number of elves volunteered to decorate the town. Donning their new Christmassy green volunteer shirts sponsored by NoosaCare Inc, these dedicated volunteers put up tinsel, baubles, garland, lights and decorations

throughout Cooroy in a whirlwind of activity on Saturday morning. Richies Bakery and Fox & Hound Espresso rewarded them for their efforts with free coffee, tea and cold drinks which was much appreciated by all! The next round of excitement will be Friday 2nd December with the official lighting of the Ri-con Cooroy Christmas Tree at 7pm outside the Cooroy RSL. This year the ceremony will be even more special with stars dedicated in memory of Bill Savory, Dawn Kelly, James & Sophie

McGrath, William and Jessie Cambage and Amy Payne. There will also be carols by the Cherry Ripes at the tree this year and there is a 100% likelihood of snow flurries forecast for this year. To top off the evening there will be a Christmas movie, “Elf” on the library rooftop from 7.30pm! Even more fun can be had on Saturday 3rd December from 4pm with the Bendigo Bank Street Parade, the Noosa Hinterland Plumbing Great Santa Race, Cooroy Fish n Chips Santa Sack Races and free rides, face paint-

ing and lots more free entertainment at the Christmas in Cooroy festival. Hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Cooroy this event is a showcase of Christmas spirit for the region. You can get the full program and all the information at www.christmasincooroy. com.au. Christmas in Cooroy could not be run as a totally FREE event without the fantastic support from all its volunteers and funding partners: Ricon Contractors, Noosa Council, Cooroy Community Bank

Congradulations Class of 2016 NOOSA District State High School Year 12 students celebrated their graduation with a ceremony to publicly acknowledge their completion of high schooling. The elegantly dressed students crossed the hall stage in their formal dresses and suits and received their Queensland Senior Certificate of Education from school Principal Mr Chris Roff and Senior School Deputy Principal Ms Stacey Daveson. The audience applauded

and admired the attractive outfits as each student was individually named by Year 12 Coordinator Miss Bridge Muir. Principal Chris Roff spoke about the amazing transformations of the students from Year 8 to Year 12, referring to the analogy of a caterpillar metamorphosing into a beautiful, perfect butterfly. School Captain Matthew Craigie delivered the valedictorian speech, reflecting on the good times the Year 12 cohort have shared together and the importance of using their expert knowl-

edge of social media to stay connected long after graduation. School Vice-Captain Reagan Greentree acknowledged and thanked Senior School Deputy Ms Stacey Daveson, Senior School Head of Department Mrs Patty Riley, Year 12 Coordinator Bridge Muir, Year 12 home group teachers and all the subject area teachers at NDSHS for their guidance, professionalism, expertise, kindness and support. The audience enjoyed many laughs and light-hearted

moments with the Year 12 video, which featured students reflecting on what they would most miss about NDSHS, with “lunch, tuckshop, friends and Mr Boulden” as the most common responses. Most Year 12 students continued the celebrations attending the formal evening hosted by the RACV Noosa Resort. The RACV Noosa Resort’s entertaining area was elegantly decorated by the Year 12 parent formal committee, with stylish gold and white as this year ’s

theme colours. The Year 12 students enjoyed a tasty three course meal, posed for photo-booth pictures and then took to the dance floor, remaining there with many of their teachers for most of the evening. The RACV Noosa Resort’s Senior Conference and Events Coordinator Mr Shane Cox was most impressed by the Year 12’s behaviour and enthusiastic attitude. The Year 12 students had a topping night, receiving a send-off they deserved and will never forget.

A Star is Dawn THERE is no doubt that Dawn Christine Kelly is deserving of a star on the Ri-con Cooroy Christmas tree this year. She passed away in June 2015 at 68 years young but she will be remembered by the many lives that she touched while here on earth. Dawn had a love for animals, in particular Boxer dogs which were her great passion. She developed into an award winning handler at a young age and this is how she met her husband Ray, who was learning to be a dog show judge at the time. They spent over 50 years together and had three children - Sharon, Nicole and Jason and three grandchildren - Shauna, Darcy and Martin. When Dawn and Ray moved to Queensland they bought a passion fruit farm at Tinbeerwah and later ran the Traders Hut, Servo and Caravan Park in Hasting

Street, where the Sheraton is now. They also opened a sports and bicycle store in Cooroy which they ran for many years. Dawn was instrumental in lobbying the government to start a Special Education unit at the Noosa District High School and also volunteered to help students with reading and other life skills. Dawn was also a well-known face in the food canteen at the Cooroy Pony Club days and special events. She volunteered with the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club to organise hosting for a number of the Chernobyl disaster children and also hosted exchange students. She helped to organise the early Pomona King of the Mountain events and raised funds for our community, collecting money for cancer. Dawn worked in the Cooroy post office for many years and made many friends for her car-

ing attitude. When she retired after many years she loved to travel both caravanning around Australia and a number of oversea trips including Canada, Europe, New Zealand and most recently the Gallipoli Anniversary. Dawn took up pottery and loved her gardening including roses, fruit trees and other plantings. “Dawn, our darling mum, grandma, wife, sister, sister in law, aunty and friend. We will never forget you and we will remember, that on some nights a star will shine over Tinbeerwah, which will be you; our shining star forever,” said her husband, Ray Kelly. The Ri-con Cooroy Christmas tree will officially be lit up at 7pm on Friday 2 December which will include the star dedications, carols by The Cherry Ripes and expected light snow flurries.

150 years of community care THE fourth star on the Ri-con Christmas tree is for life-time community volunteer, Amy Payne, and is sponsored by her sister, Jean Evans and beloved friends. Amy Winnifred Wilcken was born in Gympie on April 17, 1917. She started school at Eumundi and finished her education at Eerwah Vale. Amy helped her parents on their dairy and banana farm until her marriage in 1937 to Les (aka Tiger) Payne. Amy moved to Cooroy and she and Les bought and sold farms, all the while also growing beans, until 1956 when they moved to Emerald Street and Amy’s community service began. She served on the QLD Red Cross for over 50

years helping Dr Luck with the blood bank, was a member for the Cooroy CWA for 64, was on the Steering Committee to raise funds to build Kabara Care in Cooroy where she held the position of Treasurer for 18 years until computers took over (and Amy being in her late 80s decided to let them take over), and delivered Meals on Wheels until she broke her shoulder at 88 years. Amy received many Community Awards including: 1982 Sunshine Coast Radio Station 4NA, 1995 Sunshine Coast 50 Years Anniversary World War II, 1998 Cooroy Rotary Club, 1998 Premier of QLD Award, 2001 Commonwealth Seniors, 2001

QLD Year of Volunteers, 2006 Australian Red Cross 50 Years Service, and 2006 Reg Bryant’s Cooroy Rotary Award. Amy was also a keen bowler and life member of Cooroy Bowls Club. Amy held many positions over the decades, including President and Treasurer many times. Amy also conducted Cards for Seniors for over 35 years. Amy was very humble about her service, preferring the joy of giving to that of receiving. She was a resident of Kabara Care Cooroy for four years and passed away at Nambour Hospital on May 4, 2016. She and Les did not have children. Les passed away 37 years ago. Amy was laid to rest

with Les in the Cooroy Cemetery. She is survived by her sister Jean Evans and family of “Aveo” Albany Creek. Amy is remembered as a uniquely kind and generous soul who gave freely of herself. If you’d like to honour

Trumped!! Oh the relief, the blessed relief, one thought it would never end, The American election was enough to send you right around the bend! But now it’s no more Hillary, no nasal political stuff, No percentages, no voters, no signs, no boring election guff. It will be interesting here in Australia, To see whether Donald’s a success or a miserable failure. Can you imagine the paybacks, the search for scapegoats, The know-alls, the gurus, the professors, the turncoats. The state-by-state endless post mortem, the debts, The foolish, the braggarts, the regrettable bets. The hopes, the disappointments, even the crocodile tears, The footpath interviews, the sobbing, the fears. Australia got deeply involved, the media went berserk, The pundits had a ball, but most of it, just guesswork. They took years to work it out, how did they get it so amiss, Only two candidates, and not even a near miss! They’ll work on the story for many a year my friend, It’ll be a long haul to any sort of end.

Students encouraged to have a voice

Hon Peter Wellington with Year 11 Social & Community Studies students NOOSA District State High School Year 11 Social and Community Studies students shared their last lesson of the term with special guest speaker past NDSHS student Hon Peter Wellington. The Independent Member for Nicklin spoke to the students about some of the changes he has observed at the school, and how much it has grown since he left in Year 10, before he joined the police force. Mr Wellington reassured many of the students who still don’t know what they want to do after graduation, that they still have plenty of time to figure out their lives. “I wouldn’t have believed it if you told me when I was at Noosa District that I would be in Parliament one day. The thought never crossed my mind,” Mr Wellington said. The students were advised by Mr Wellington to stay in school and complete Year 12, as this is something he wishes he did. “Education is so important. People with education

Page 6 - Cooroy Rag, November 30, 2016

are empowered and have a voice,” Mr Wellington said. The Year 11’s were urged to write letters or emails Mr Wellington and the local council about issues they felt passionately about in their community, with a few students expressing concerns over the dangerous intersection on the Cooroy railway bridge. “Letters from students are often taken more seriously than those written by adults, because, sadly, it is rare that we hear from young people,” Mr Wellington said. Mr Wellington assured the class that traffic lights were being considered and were the most likely option for the dangerous intersection in Cooroy as they would be cheaper and less disruptive than a roundabout. The students found Mr Wellington’s presentation to be interesting and he challenged many who had viewed all politicians as being unfriendly and unapproachable. “He made us feel like we’re important and that we have a voice, even if we’re not old enough to vote yet,” Year 11 student Reece Cody said.

CHRISTMAS budgetingCan you believe it? Tomorrow will be the first day of Christmas! It means we’re entering one of the busiest times of our year. Presents, work drinks, family functions and school holidays can also keep us feeling a little broke. December and January is also traditionally the most expensive time of the year for households. A few tips to financially survive the season include: • Budget before hand. Write a list including anticipated costs and then try to stick to it. • Try to save in advance. As I mentioned in previous columns if you saved $20 a week for a year you would have over $1,000. Some banks like our Cooroy and Pomona Bendigo Bank branches offer Christmas Club accounts to assist with savings for December. • Start your shopping early. This can effectively spread the

financial commitment over many weekly pays or pensions. This way it won’t feel too cumbersome all at once. • Try not to put everything on the credit card. This debt will only be there to pay later. Credit cards are great but they can easily get out of control. • Secret Santa or a Kris Kringle present giving can greatly reduce your cost. Everyone still gets a present and it does not cost as much. • At parties and BBQ’s don’t cater for 50 people when only 20 are coming. In addition share the work load and cost but getting

everyone to pitch in. Christmas and the holidays is usually a great time for everyone. Many have at least a few days off work to spend with family and friends. If you’re lucky enough to be one of them, enjoy your wellearned break. If you want to have a chat about any banking matter, feel free to contact me or any of our team on 5447 7131 (Cooroy), 5485 1786 (Pomona) or you can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

The school year may be drawing to a close, but great young minds have been hard at work at our local state schools these past few weeks. Those in the ‘affirmative’ took on those in the ‘negative’ in the annual Noosa District Debating Cup held at Noosaville State School on Monday. Students representing Cooroy, Cooran, Tewantin and Noosaville State Schools participated in a competition where round robin debates occurred on various subjects, such as whether performance enhancing drugs should be legalised. The skills and the passion were on display for all to see during the finals held at Noosaville State School on Monday. For the record, Cooroy’s senior team and Noosaville’s junior team were crowned

The champion Cooroy State School senior debating team champions for 2016. In what has now become an annual event since 2012, the tournament has proven to be a real hit, with students from Grades 5 and 6 finding a fun way to inspire debating with a little competitiveness between the schools. Tournament co-ordinator, Barb Allen said the Noosa District Debating Cup was a great success and is now a sought after title between the four schools and feels it will grow from strength to strength each year it’s held. “The kids have really embraced the annual Debaters’ Cup and we thank Bendigo Bank for their ongoing financial support of this event. Because of it, we’re able to purchase medallions and present the trophies for the junior and senior winners of the competition. Each student who takes

part also receives a certificate of participation. The standard of competition was high again in 2016 and we all had a lot of fun,” Mrs. Allen said. “This year we were also delighted to add Cooran State School to the competition. It’s great to have them on board and the students and have worked really hard under the guidance of their coaches and adjudicators. Debating is a great skill for the kids to have as they get older and we certainly have a few budding experts on our hands. At the end of the day the tournament’s success is in the enjoyment the students had in taking part,” she added. Tewantin Community Bank branch manager, Wayne Hoens said the bank is delighted about its continued involvement in sponsoring tournaments that develop students’ learning and sportsmanship.

Speeding vehicles on council’s radar

The new VMS sign reminds a driver to slow down. A NEW radar-activated message sign is helping put the brakes on speeding on local roads. Council plans to deploy the variable message sign (VMS) at speeding hotspots across the shire to remind lead-footed drivers to slow down on Council’s road network. It’s an initiative funded by the Queensland Government Community Road Safety Grants Program. Kauri Street at Cooroy is the sign’s first stop. It

was chosen due to recent complaints about vehicles speeding past the street’s childcare centres and dance school. “Every kilometre over the speed limit increases the risk of tragedy, particularly in areas where children are out and about and crossing roads,” says Project Officer Joanna Ferris. “The beauty of these signs is that they are mobile so we can move them around Council’s road network at the request of police, or in response to calls from the community.” Speeding vehicles trigger the VMS to display the speed limit, the vehicle’s speed, and a message urging the driver to slow down. “We know from other councils’ experience that they do help reduce speeding,” Ms Ferris says. A recent evaluation by Brisbane City Council found that such signs were effective in slowing around 40% of speeding vehicles. “At Kauri Street, we’ve tailored the message to remind speeding drivers that they’re putting children’s lives at risk.” VMS signs use LED technology and solar power, making them a great addition to road safety, and one that supports Council’s zero emissions target.

Want a great retirement? Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* WHEN the word retirement is mentioned in everyday discourse it’s often associated with numbers. The amount you’ll need to retire. The age at which you’ll stop working. The tax you’ll incur as you draw on your super. But what these numerical references neglect is the psychological dimension. As someone who’s decades away from retirement, I can’t talk about my personal experiences (there are none) or expectations (what retirement?). I’ll instead just refer to fresh research that explores the non-financial aspects, which are arguably as important as the financial. But first let’s go to a story broadcast on 60 Minutes a few years ago. Journalist Liz Hayes travelled to the Greek island of Ikaria – “a magical place where people live longer than anyone else on the planet. They also have lower rates of cancer and heart disease and almost no dementia.” So what makes the inhabitants live so long

(approximately 10 years longer than the rest of us) and so well? Is it the food? Is it the wine? Is it the island’s beauty? One local thinks it’s her love of Pepsi. A 100-year-old credits a hard life working on rocky hillsides. One of the scientists provides a more reasoned explanation: “[Retirees] are useful in the community until the very end … you must have purpose in your life.” In other words, it appears as though the Ikarians’ longevity is due to the fact their elderly are made to feel as though they matter. A younger resident describes it like this: “Nobody feels useless. And nobody is left alone.” The concept of mattering in old age has been emphasised in this month’s edition of the American Psychologist journal. The scholars refer to it as ‘psychological security’. It’s derived from activities such as volunteering, part-time work, community involvement and caregiving. The problem, however, is that “there is a gap between what older adults

want and need and what employers and policymakers are offering”. That gap is exacerbated by inflexible bosses, ageist attitudes and outdated social norms. Inflexible bosses are those who won’t create adaptive work environments or provide quality jobs at hours that suit their employees’ lifestyles. Ageist attitudes are those that overvalue youth and energy and undervalue older workers’ experience and knowledge. Outdated social norms are those that insist the age of 65 is the point at which people reach their use-by date. The researchers suggest there are three questions pre-retirees should ask themselves if they want to matter: • What can be done to enhance meaning and purpose in my life? • What in my current activity repertoire is most meaningful to me? • Where am I needed most? On answering those questions, they’re better placed to craft their ideal retirement even when

confronted by antiquated obstructionists. The critical need to continue mattering has also been elaborated on extensively in the latest issue of the Journal of Vocational Behavior. The two studies conducted by the researchers are linked by one element that seems to be at the core of mattering, namely: relationships. The Ikarians’ longevity is due to the fact their elderly are made to feel as though they matter. In sum, the cultivation of relationships at work prior to retirement, and the cultivation of relationships once an individual is retired, are key to the feeling that one matters in this world. Now, for the final word, let’s go to Leo Rosten, the American writer who penned a wonderful essay in the 1960s titled The Myths By Which We Live. He argued provocatively that crime does pay, that you shouldn’t always tell the truth, that every problem doesn’t have a solution, and that the purpose of life isn’t necessarily to be happy: “It is to be useful, to be

Cooroy Mountain climbers reward good causes

Order NOW for Christmas Don’t miss out!!

THE Rotary Club of Cooroy was delighted to donate funds raised at the Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival 2016 to good causes at a presentation evening held at the Cooroy Hotel on Saturday 19 November 2016. Attended by sponsors, partner companies and supporters who enable the event to take place, the local disability support group Sunshine Butterflies was presented with a cheque for $12,500. Cheques for $1,000 were given to the Queensland SES and to the Noosa District State High School Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and $500 each to the Noosa District High School Interact Club and the Black Mountain Rural Fire Service. Andrew Aves, President of the Rotary Club of Cooroy said Members of the Club are overjoyed by the very generous support we enjoyed at the Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival, in fact we were

almost overwhelmed by the number of people attending the Festival this year. On behalf of all those who climbed the Mountain it is an honour, to present the money raised to such worthy local good causes. Leanne Walsh, Founder of Sunshine Butterflies offered a big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the event. “Funds received will be allocated to ‘Our Backyard’; a 5 acre Hobby Farm in Cooroibah that has something for everyone of all ages and abilities. Our Backyard will soon be the new home of all Sunshine Butterflies activities including, music, drama, art, cooking and woodwork programs giving members plenty of room to spread their wings and shine. “Participants will learn about horticulture, permaculture, gardening skills, environmental activities, aquaculture and animal care.”

Aboriginal elder Ricko, guiding members of the Cooroy Probus Club around the exhibitions at Cherbourg. THE Probus Club of Cooroy ventured west to the aboriginal town of Cherbourg for their November outing Cherbourg began in 1901 as an aboriginal reserve. People from over 50 different clans were forcibly removed from all over Queensland and encamped there alongside the local Wakka Wakka people. The Ration Station museum and the Cherbourg Historical Precinct offered us a unique insight into the life of aboriginal people living in one of the most notoriously controlled reserves created under Queensland’’s Aboriginal Protection Acts. The exhibitions, the Cherbourg Timeline and the DVD’s gave us an overview of the history, the challenges and the personalities that have shaped

the town of Cherbourg......it also left us with food for thought as to how white settlement has affected the lives of our Australian aboriginal people. Sadly, time did not allow us to take part in the art workshop, the boomerang throwing or to sit around the yarning circle to hear some dreamtime stories. Many thanks to the Tewantin RSL who made a bus and driver available to the Cooroy Probus Club for this outing. Locals interested in learning more about our Probus Club are invited to attend one of our meetings held on the first Monday of each month in the Anglican Church Hall, Miva Street, Cooroy or ring our membership officer, John Pluck on 5485 0415

THE Tinbeerwah Art Group is seeking new members to join their Thursday morning class. We are inviting all painters and would be painters who are interested in joining an Art group next year to an information morning on Thursday 8th December from 10am - 12 noon at Tinbeerwah Hall. The Tinbeerwah Art Group was founded in 1994 by the late Gwen Blair. We have approximately 40 members who choose to paint on either Thursday or Friday from 9am - 12noon during school term times. We are inviting new members to join our Thursday group. We average about fifteen people each morning. A lot of our members are retired and can go away for extended periods then come back again so we have structured our fees to accommodate them. Members pay an annual fee and a class attendance fee so we are very flexible. We encourage artists of all abilities. Our members range from complete beginners to award winning artists. We paint in a variety of mediums -acrylics, watercolours, oils, pastels, charcoal and pencil, collage and mixed media. Mem-

bers are encouraged to develop their own unique styles. We invite a different guest tutor for each of our four terms which offers members the opportunity to try different techniques and develop their skills in different mediums. In 2017 we have already confirmed the return of two of our award winning tutors. Noreen Flood who was the winner of 2016 Kenilworth Art prize and is well known for her abstract and mixed media work and Kerry Wilson who specialises in drawing in pencil and charcoal. Bob Silver has been a long time member of T.A.G. and has tutored us in acrylics and watercolours and will continue to be available in 2017. Besides the tutored classes members have access to and can borrow from an extensive library of art books, magazines and DVD’s. We also organise bus trips to visit local, regional and Brisbane galleries. Once a year those members who wish to exhibit their work can participate in our annual Art Show which we use as an opportunity to raise funds for local charities. dining & entertainment Audience blindfolded for ‘curiosity experiment’ at Noosa Museum

COOROY RAG THE Curiosity Experiment – an interactive ghost story – is set to bring a supernatural experience to Noosa Museum in December for a limited season. The Curiosity Experiment is a story telling event with a dash of theatrical flair, old fashion radio-play elements and the participant’s own imagination. Throughout the performance, the intimate audience sits around a table and listens to the ghost story, unable to see a

thing unless they are game enough to peak beneath the blindfold. Director Nathan Schulz says the show is a unique theatrical experience. “The audience spends the entire performance blindfolded,” he said. “We concentrate on the deprivation of sight during performance to enhance the other senses and ignite the audience’s imagination and heighten suspense,” he said.

“I wanted to achieve something new, something different. I wanted to go back to a time when people used their imagination. “In this way the audience gets to watch, listen, think and feel having all their senses engaged rather than merely being the observer in a detached way,” he said. The Curiosity Experiment debuted in early 2016 at Brisbane’s Anywhere Festival and was met with success. The show was then performed at the Melbourne Fringe Festival and the team now has their sights set on the 2017 Ad-

elaide Fringe Festival. “The Noosa Museum show will be our only Sunshine Coast show before we take The Curiosity Experiment to the Adelaide Fringe Festival. So this will be audiences only chance to be part of the experiment. “This type of show can be performed almost anywhere. We cater the performance to the space. This is the first time we have performed in a Museum.” The Curiosity Experiment is produced by theatre company Nathan Schulz Presents in conjunction

with the Noosa Museum. The show will run on December 2 and December 4, with two shows a night at 7pm and 9pm. Tickets are $30 per person and can be booked through Noosa Museum by phoning 5485 1080 or emailing info@noosa museum.org.au. Warning: Show contains scares, mature and sensitive themes. Audience members are blindfolded for the duration of the performance. Audience participation, touch, smells and loud noises are also utilised.

Barbecued Christmas Turkey with Lemon, Parsley and Garlic Butter Try cooking your Christmas turkey on a Weber and free up your oven for all the accompaniments! Prepare the barbecue for roasting (in-direct method) at approx. 180°C. Put the butter in a large bowl and season with salt and pepper. Add the olive oil, lemon zest and juice, crushed garlic and chopped parsley and mix well. Gently loosen the skin on the breast from both ends of the bird (be careful not to tear the skin). Feel your way down towards the legs from the lower side of the breast, working your way under the skin of the legs to loosen the gap. Stuff half the butter mix under the skin and gently massage the butter around the breasts and down over the legs so that the meat is evenly covered. Finally, insert the bay leaves under the breast skin. Put the vegetables and sliced lemon in a roasting tin with the parsley and thyme. Place the bird on top, breast side up. Spread the rest of the butter all over the outside of the skin. Season well and drizzle with a little olive oil. Roast the turkey on the barbecue for 10–15 minutes. Then baste and lay the bacon over the breast. Baste again and put back on the barbecue with the lid closed. Cook for about 2 3/4

hours (or 30 mins per kg) basting occasionally. Check that the juices are running clear or check the internal temperature is over 75°C using a meat thermometer before removing from the barbecue. Leave to rest for at least 45 minutes. Remove the bay leaves from under the skin before carving. Use the veg and pan juices to make your gravy. health Diagnosis of headache and migraine

COOROY RAG

PHYSIOTHERAPIST Tim Robinson specialises in the accurate assessment and diagnosis of headache and migraine conditions for those affected by, or who experience, headaches or migraines. He identifies and diagnosis conditions and their causes and potential triggers that determine pain patterns. Having a particular focus on headaches, Tim has completed the level 2 certification for the Watson Headache Approach in Sydney. Tim has the experience and knowledge to help you with your condition and provide honest and effective advice, management and treatment and ensures that patient comfort is a priority as he does not use manipulation or rapid rotating techniques as part of his assessment. In the past, the vast majority of those who suffer from headaches and migraines, and have presented for years, have received little relief from most of the investigations with inconclusive results. These patients have often experienced little to no change after following advice and information from practitioners, medications, and cognitive behavioural therapy. Fortunately, new research has offered a more comprehensive insight into the treatment of headaches and migraines and provides a surer solution. To adopt the scientifically researched methods, the courses are based on the Watson headache approach an unparalleled protocol for the skilled assessment and management of the upper cervical spine (neck) and head-

ache and migraine conditions. The method of examination, treatment, and diagnostic accuracy is unmatched as it confirms if disorders of the upper neck are responsible for headaches or migraines and determines the exact nature of the disorder and which spinal joints are involved. Following a thorough assessment, Tim is able to determine which joints are contributing to this phenomenon. As a result, Tim may be able to de-sensitise the brain stem and effectively eliminate the root cause to achieve, at the very least, a reduction in the severity of symptoms and in many cases where the neck is involved, he can abolish the headache /migraine entirely. What you need to know about the procedure: • Assessment and treatment is safe and effective. • The accurate assessment of the neck will provide you with early feedback regarding possible outcomes. • Assessment and treatment is based on sophisticated, highly evolved and scientific researched methods. • There is no manipulation or high velocity thrust techniques. • Initial consultations are an hour in length to allow an appropriate time to assess you and manage your condition. Breaking bread IT has been popular around the world since the dawn of agriculture, versatile and yummy, bread is a tempting food, but for many of us it can trigger a range of health issues. Jodie Persovic, Nutritionist and Naturopath, says the most common problems for her clients are: bloating, cramps, constipation or diarrhoea, and generally feeling flat. These can be caused by any of breads ingredients: flour, preservatives, yeast or other additives. Wheat and rye flour each contain the infamous protein Gluten, as well as a carbohydrate known as Fructan. Whether it’s Gluten, Fructan or an additive, the

Amamoor kids win scarecrow prize IT is hard to imagine how many bottle caps went into Bottlecap Bobbie, but the massive effort gave Amamoor kids the prize they were looking for – overall winner of the children’s category in the annual Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival. The entry from Amamoor State School featured the school’s uniform colours on a full-size silhouette of a student. The Blue and White Teapot café at Amamoor won the prize for the most artistic scarecrow in the valley this year with Pottering Around. And the action-packed entry from Graham Walker at Brooloo collected the traditional prize. Aptly titled Get the Farmer, it features a bull chasing the landholder. More than 65 scarecrows could be found throughout the Mary Valley during the festival which attracted busloads of tourists and many self-drive visitors to the area.

Men’s Shed Pomona members recently presented 10 wildlife nesting boxes for installation at Unitywater’s Cooroy Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). The nesting boxes were crafted as part of a partnership which saw Unitywater assist the men’s shed with water and sewerage connections earlier this year. Unitywater Environmental Affairs Manager Kylie Crouch said the nesting boxes have allowed men’s shed members to participate in a worthwhile project to enhance the environment, providing shelter and nesting sites for birds and wildlife. “There is reasonably mature regrowth vegetation around the STP which provides a great food source for native wildlife but most of the trees aren’t old enough to have developed many hollows which a range of birds and animals need for resting and breeding,” Ms Crouch said. “So nesting boxes provide a worthwhile alternative until tree hollows are formed naturally.” The Men’s Shed had built a variety of nesting boxes for animals of different sizes. Some are larger with larger holes for bigger birds and possums and the smaller ones have been designed for smaller birds like rosellas and mammals like sugar and squirrel gliders. Kingfishers, other parrots, kookaburras, possums and microbats were other species that may use the nesting boxes. Men’s Shed Pomona Treasurer Brian Lawson said the members enjoyed making the nesting boxes. “We are happy with how they turned out and that birds and wildlife will have somewhere to call home,” Mr Lawson said. The Men’s Shed Pomona will host a stall with plants from their greenhouse at the Pomona Markets on 10 December and hope to purchase some new tools for further projects.

THIS is a property where every inch of it has been carefully thought out and designed to ensure it has created the very best in acreage living. With 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, this home has such a great design and will certainly impress all whom inspect. The high ceilings, extra wide hallways & huge open plan living makes this home incredibly light & bright and very easy living. There are two separate living areas with one been fully sound proofed making it ideal as a media room. The spacious kitchen is perfectly located overlooking the dining room and out to the stunning park like grounds that surround. The very best of chefs will approve the 5 burner gas stove & ample cupboards & drawers. Entertain until your heart is content under the massive outdoor entertainment area that overlooks the private land. The entertainment area is made complete with a built in kitchen & surround sound. Even the 9m x 9m shed has been carefully thought out with extra high 3.5m clearance for the highest of caravans and a side roller door making easy access for the mower to come in and out. There is side access on both sides of the home to the fully dog fenced 1.5 acres. The land is without doubt one of the best small acreage blocks I have seen, it is seriously like a football field bordered by 10ft high lilly pillys making it absolutely private. You can be cooking or entertaining while watching the kids play, there is even a cubby house for them to have some fun. The retiree will also appreciate the useable, level land as it is very easy care. All of the gardens around the home are low maintenance and are boarded by concrete edging making them very easy to care for. Contact Alisa Wythes on 0415 111 370 to arrange your viewing.
