Cooroy paints the town pink THE Cooroy library and the local community looked pretty in pink on Thursday 17 October at the 2013 Pink Precinct Fun Trail and raised more than $850 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). Division 12 Councillor Tony Wellington was joined by more than 150 dedicated participants and one dog who all came dressed in their best pink outfits and followed a surprise trail around the Mill Place Precinct. Cooroy’s local businesses generously donated a range of wonderful prizes and supported this muchloved annual event. A new addition this year to the festivities was the Smoothie Bike provided by Sunshine Coast Council. This proved popular with locals who used pedal power to whip up pink smoothies as a reward after all the hard work people put in on the Trail. Ingredients were donated by Pardons Fruit Market and Super IGA and the beautiful smoothies were produced by pedal power for the thirsty walkers! The event included a touching presentation by Carolyn McKinlay who shared her personal journey to battle and overcome breast cancer. NBCF is Australia’s leading community-supported organisation dedicated to supporting high quality research into the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer. When the NBCF was founded, 30% of women diagnosed with breast cancer lost their battle with the disease. In less than 20 years, this figure has halved. NBCF CEO Carole Renouf believes this achievement is primarily due to research – the most effective way to improve the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer. The contribution from activities such as 2013 Pink Precinct Fun Trail, will help bring NBCF closer to their goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.

news Poet’s Breakfast - a great start to the festive season

COOROY RAG THE annual Poet’s Breakfast has become a key part of the Christmas in Cooroy celebrations and is a great way to kick off the day on 7 December! This is the sixth year for the breakfast and it seems the poets just get better every year! “Not only do you get a fantastic buffet breakfast to start the day, but you’ll also get your share of laughter too because these poets are very entertaining,” said event manager, Danielle Taylor. MC for the event, popular hinterland poet Ian Mackay has mustered up a stellar lineup

again including ABC’s evergreen “poet-in residence” and master of the short poem, Harry Donnelly as will the very popular, “Irish Joe” Lynch and winner of the coveted Woodford Poetry Slam, Robin “Archie” Archbold. Each poet has developed his own, quite distinct style in both writing and performing but together they combine to produce a cohesive show that evolves as the morning unfolds. Tickets must be prepurchased via the Cooroy Hotel for only $30 which includes a hearty breakfast and a few hours of entertain-

Entries open for Great Santa Race

A PRIZE pool that has been increased to $2,000 is sure to see a huge field of entrants in the Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race on Saturday 7 December. The challenge is simple - make the short dash up Maple Street in Cooroy dressed in a Santa suit! First prize is $750, second is $500 and third is $250 but the beauty is that you don’t even have to place to be a winner as there are also five random draws of $100! If the prize pool isn’t enough enticement, the event also raises funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. So that should provide everyone with plenty of incentive to get their running shoes on! “This is the fifth year that we have had the mad-cap excitement of the Great Santa Race as a part of the Christmas in Cooroy celebrations. We’ve had around 50 Santas in the last couple of years but it would be

great if we could double those numbers and get 100 Santas streaking their way up Maple Street. There are thousands of people in the crowd cheering them on so it is all quite exciting. The more Santas that run, the more funds are raised for the Leukaemia Foundation,” said Danielle Taylor, Event Manager. The Great Santa Race will start at Apex Park in Cooroy at 4.30pm on Saturday 7 December. Entry to the Great Santa Race is only $10 and all entrants receive a free Santa suit to race in. Proceeds of the race are donated to Leukaemia Foundation. Participants must be 18 years and over and entries can be obtained online at www.christmasincooroy.com.au under the competitions tab. Ensure you enter early to secure a spot at the starting line. The Great Santa Race is a component of Christmas in Cooroy which is a fantastic

free community event with free rides and entertainment for the entire family. Hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Cooroy this event is a showcase of Christmas spirit for the region. The race will precede the popular Bendigo Bank Street Parade which then leads into other festivities such as music and fireworks in Apex Park. Christmas in Cooroy is a free non-for profit event hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Inc and the Rotary Club of Cooroy Inc. The event could not be run without the fantastic support from all its volunteers and funding partners: Cooroy Community Branch of Bendigo Bank, Wimmers Soft Drinks, Cooroy Hotel, Ri-con Contractors, Stella Conveyancing, Cooroy Pest Control, Zinc 96.1FM, Lukes Supa IGA Cooroy, Cooroy Rag, Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy, Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group, Qld Media Print, Firefly Solutions, Mower & ATV, Hinternoosa Real Estate, Ritek Building Solutions, David Lafferty @ Hinternoosa, Bamboo Australia, Gelignite Jacks, Hinterland Christian Centre and Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

ON the eve of this historic Noosa Council elections, it is the realisation that by next edition the rural community will know who will be looking after their best interests for the next 2 years. Well-known community and business identity Sandy Bolton is one of the three candidates out of 19 vying for 6 councillor positions who has a long association with our Hinterland communities, and has been working overtime to cover the whole Shire during the last month walking the streets. “It has been invigorating, and informative, as well as exhausting! Nearly 4,000 people later, the voice box is protesting. This period has not only identified the common issues that are shared between urban and rural dwellers, but also the vast differences. It is these differences that make it vital that we have at least two councillors elected on November 9 that fully understand rural people and life, and the problems faced.” As a local, totally independent, non-affiliated, community fo-

cused candidate, Sandy is committed to equally supporting the needs of business, the environment, community organisations, and residents through a return to solid basics of· Sound financial, infrastructure, and services management including a review of rates structure · Increased consultation for ALL residents to have their say on issues that affect their communities · Common sense, efficiency and solutions with a focus on customer service and simpler processes. Sandy says “Standing for Council is a natural extension of the work I have been doing all of my life in management for business and community organisations. I am very much a “people” person, and this I believe is an essential criteria for Councillors – great communication skills and empathy with residents” The Hinterland knows Sandy as the Sport & Recreation Coordinator for 8 of clubs, Community Manager for the

Cooroy RSL, and the host of fundraising events which assists up to 40 organisations annually. Current community efforts include the Cooroy Project and restoration of the Memorial Hall, and the continued focus to secure a site for RV’s and re-introduction of an Expo similar to our previous “Farming the Future” to provide a showcase for Hinterland product including sustainable practices and services “After 20 years involvement in our communities, I have an indepth understanding of the issues faced by the Hinterland and rural sector. Representing

you in Council is an opportunity to utilise diverse skills, knowledge, networks and experience with local, State and Federal government to find solutions to these” Sandy is dedicated to ensuring the Noosa Shire has the future that you are looking for - a protected environment, vibrant economy and an inclusive community. “We can achieve this through the development of the basics outlined above and balanced representation. Let’s keep it simple for the first year and build a solid base with a return of the standards of service you require, and address the priorities.”

Sandy’s final word before Election Day? “ I care very much about you, your families and our communities. I will listen, and I will do. Together we will achieve you vision for a prosperous future, and I ask for your support on Nov 9.” “And to the many wonderful people who have supported me on this campaign, you have been incredible and I take this opportunity to thank you so much.” You can contact Sandy on 0405483579 or email sandybolton@bigpond.com. Time to get off the gravy train! The public, understandably, are thoroughly cranky, With the politicians’ financial hanky panky, Being caught out wrongly claiming expenses, And when it’s revealed, offering pathetic defences. Anything can be claimed as having an electorate purpose, The whole system seems to be an expensive political circus. A flight from Perth to Cairns, accompanied by the wife, Pay for it myself??? Not on your cotton picking life! The taxpayers seem to think it was clearly a rort, So I’d better pay it back, now that I’ve been caught, You went to a fellow pollie’s wedding celebrations? Well someone had to convey the Parliament’s congratulations! Buying those expensive books, with a bookcase of large dimensions?? Paying for them myself, is not in my intentions. In private enterprise, you wouldn’t just pay it back, If it was on the same scale, you’d probably get the sack. Some allowances are possibly a financial nonsense, A tempting mark for those who lack political conscience. But they are a ready source of funds, easily available, And even the pollies admit, their interpretation can be debatable, The examples that have been embarrassingly revealed, Makes you wonder how many more have been cunningly concealed. But if you believe that parliament will interfere with that lovely money, You must believe in airborne pigs, and the cuddly Easter Bunny. They say the Lord loves those who help themselves, But I’m sure He doesn’t like those caught helping themselves!!! Inspiring Cooroy THE Inspiring Australia Movement is gaining rapid momentum and unprecedented support throughout the cities and regional areas of Australia. It has also spilled over into New Zealand. The movement Inspires local communities to connect by creating local events where inspirational speakers from the community tell their story. By connecting with their stories. Inspiring Australia intends to prevent skyrocketing suicide rates. Inspiring Cooroy (part of this movement) will be holding it’s second event on November 28 at Cooroy Bowls Club. The event provides a platform: • For the Cooroy community to catch up, connect & make new friends. • Allows speakers to connect, give back & inspire the community by sharing their story. • Gives members of the community the opportunity to give much needed cash to a local charity. • Featuring a charity brings awareness of the wonderful resources available within our community when times get tough. • This in turn exposes the inspirational work provided by members of our community. The first Inspiring Cooroy event was attended by 58 people who raised $841.76 for Katie Rose Cottage. Further individual donations were made to the hospice as a result of the event. The next event is expected to grow as rapidly as the movement itself as more locals become aware

of this Inspirational event. Proceeds of the November 28 event will go to The Cooroy Family Support Centre who provide a wonderful service supporting and counseling individuals and their children during difficult times. Inspiring Cooroy was initiated by a local, Richard Hansen of Impact Presentations. Through connecting with locals and their stories Richard has discovered amazing inspiration which deserves to be shared. Richard believes that each of us has an inspiring story to tell. By telling your story you could inspire a person, the community or the world. Inspiring Cooroy will become a regular local event, run every 4 months. If you have an inspiring story or know someone who does contact events@impactpresentations.com.au The next Inspiring Cooroy event held on 28 November will feature: Matt Golinski- Matts battle to recover from a devastating event is one of true courage and inspiration. Dave Hackett - Despite leaving school at an early age, Cartoon Dave has written 14 books and inspires others to develop their creativity. Tex Pipke- Arrived in Cooroy 20 years ago as a ‘bombastic’ yank. He shares how Cooroy inspired him. Tickets can be purchased online at www.inspiringcooroy.com.au

An opportunity to shape the future of Cooroy If you are interested in helping to decide how Cooroy will change and grow, then come to the Cooroora Woodworkers clubhouse at the Lower Mill site at 6pm on the 28th of November for the first public meeting of the Cooroy Lower Mill Board. You will be able to meet Board members, hear about past and future plans and stroll around the sites

available for future community developments. Of course, you can also take the opportunity to have your say about what you think might be possible, and for a $20 fee, become a general member of the Board, which will keep you informed about progress and future opportunities. See you there!

Family Business

Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy LOOSELY defined, a family business is that in which two or more family members work, and in which at least 50% of the ownership rests in family hands. Family-owned business is by far the largest sector in the Australian economy. If you operate a family business you will face some unique challenges. In addition to the typical concerns of a business of your size, in your industry, you will need to consider the following: • How can you balance the different needs, interests and priorities of family members and nonfamily members in your business? • How can you raise capital without sacrificing equity? • What criteria have you developed for family members joining the business? • Do you have a family council or other mechanism to ensure all family members have a say in the running of the business? • To whom will you

pass control and/or ownership of your business? How can you ensure that this process is planned and orderly? Family businesses often lack the right outlook and professional management practices to maximise the long-term growth and value in their businesses. They have the strong desire to accumulate wealth, but few family businesses seem willing to accept outside investment or use modern business practices to maintain or increase their value. Key missing elements are a business plan with written job descriptions for management and a formal strategic plan. All businesses should also have a documented ownership succession plan. Other areas where family businesses could improve are having non-family board members, hold regular board meetings, have a plan to address technological opportunities, make use of

business-to-business e-commerce practices and benchmark their business against world best practice. It is clear that a lot of effort and heartache goes into building a business so don’t fail to extract the maximum value when you exit. Whether or not you are planning on selling your business in the near or distant future, there are some fundamental strategies that can protect and build the value of a family business. If you have any questions on your business would like to discuss any other banking matter, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

Wellington’s Way by MP Peter Wellington POLITICIANS Pays: This week Queensland Independent Remuneration Tribunal made a ruling in relation to pays for Members of Parliament. As was expected, the tribunal did not support the ridiculous 42% pay rise introduced by the Deputy Premier earlier this year and has ruled that politicians must repay all money received under that increase. I am more than happy to do this. The tribunal has also introduced a new allowance scheme which will result in greater accountability of allocations and the need for repayment of money not acquitted. Again, this is something I support. Review of the Manufactured Homes (Residential Parks) Act 2003: A number of our Retirement Villages are classed as Manufactured Homes and do not fall within the guidelines of the Retirement Villages Act. Over the years I have met with many Manufactured Home Park residents who have concerns about how their Villages are run and what they perceive to be shortcomings in the legislation. The Government has put out an online survey for Manufactured Home Park owners. The Minister had advised that the results of the survey will help form changes to the current legislation. Information on the survey is available from my office 54416933. Cooroy to Curra Upgrade: The Department of Transport and Main Roads has recently announced that the next construction phase of the Cooroy to Curra upgrade of the Bruce Highway is scheduled to start in the coming weeks. Work will involve: constructing just over 7km of new four-lane highway to the west of the existing highway between Cudgerie Drive and Sankeys Road; building a new interchange north of Cooroy, halfway between Cudgerie Drive and Black Mountain Range Road that will support travel in any direction; constructing an overpass for the new highway over Skyring Creek and Gardners Road; realigning a small section of Cooroy Connection Road to accommodate the new interchange.

news New works on Cooroy to Curra BIELBY Holdings Pty Ltd has been awarded a major contract for the Bruce Highway, Cooroy to Curra Section A upgrade, which will see works begin between Cudgerie Drive and Sankeys Road within weeks. The contract was announced today by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, and Queensland Member for Gympie, David Gibson, representing Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Scott Emerson. Mr Truss said the contract involved construction of seven kilometres of four-lane divided highway and a new northern Cooroy interchange. “Approximately 16,000 vehicles currently travel this section of the Bruce Highway each day, and this project will ensure the highway has enough capacity to deal with the expected growth in traffic over future decades,” Mr Truss said. “As work nears completion on the upgrade of Black Mountain Range Road, we can shift our focus to the new section of highway between Cudgerie Drive and Sankeys Road. “The Federal Liberal and Nationals Government will spend $2 billion to up-

grade the Bruce Highway through the Wide Bay electorate alone, making it faster, safer and less prone to flooding.” “This is a part of our $6.7 billion Bruce Highway package which, with funding from the Queensland Government, brings the total investment to $8.5 billion over the next ten years to provide better infrastructure for regional Queensland.” Mr Gibson said the contract would also involve the creation of a new interchange north of Cooroy and construction of bridges at Skyring Creek and Gardners Road. “The new Cooroy northern interchange will be built half way between Cudgerie Drive and Black Mountain Range Road, and roundabouts will be provided on each side of the upgraded highway to efficiently connect the local road network,” Mr Gibson said. “The existing highway between Cudgerie Drive and Sankeys Road will be left to service local motorists, and will connect to the interchange via one of the roundabouts.” The Australian and Queensland governments are jointly funding the $790 million Cooroy to Curra Section A, Bruce Highway Upgrade.

OBTAINING employment on the Sunshine Coast has continued to prove difficult as employers currently receive up to 300+ applicants for every position advertised, and government roles can exceed 1200 candidates. Evidence based statistics or examples of achievements are necessary to compete with other applicants. “It’s a competitive market on the Sunshine Coast, you have approx 6 seconds to captivate the reader by highlighting relevant skills and achievements at a glance,” says Ruth Carter – owner of Personalised Resumes, a Tewantin based business who services clients across Australia. “Resumes go through fads and phases and you must be marketed correctly, your resume tailored to your industry and presented in a professional format. Once a teacher, always a teacher! DAVID Wright moved to Cooroy in January 1987 when he joined the teaching staff at Noosa District SHS. He taught there until the end of 2000 and not long after that he left school teaching altogether. However it seems the old adage “once a teacher always a teacher” is certainly true where David is concerned! During the 1990’s David developed a software program to revolutionise managing household finances and since leaving the school environment he has been busily teaching people all around the world.

Regularly teaching at seminars in the major capital cities around Australia, he has also been a guest speaker on tour in New Zealand, he’s made a number of appearances in Los Angeles both at seminars and on national USA Television and more recently he’s spoken at Northampton University in the UK. You may have even seen David on A Current Affair or Today Tonight not long after he launched his Simply Budgets software program. In November he is flying to the USA again where he will be working with a company dedicated to

repairing Credit Ratings for people who have been hit had by the GFC. Before leaving on that mission David will be appearing at the

news Peter McGregor, an independent voice in council

COOROY RAG

NOOSA Council hopeful Peter McGregor knows all too well that the newly elected Noosa Council will have a difficult task in front of them in the next couple of years. Much is still unknown as to what resources, staffing and revenue the new council will inherit and when that is known the new Council will be called upon to make some tough

decisions to ensure that the new Noosa Council is efficient and effective in the manner that it does its business. Peter is a former Noosa councillor who believes he has the experience and knowledge that is required to ensure a responsible transition. Peter believes that Noosa must regain its sense of community which has been sadly lacking since amalgamation. Peter also believes that Council core business such as rates, roads, rubbish, parks and gardens and customer service will be high on his list of priorities. Much has been made on the financial ability of the new council and Peter believes that proper sustainable financial management will be required and having the right staff in position will go a long way towards achieving that goal. The community is crying out for Council to assist local business and Peter is dedicated to working with and encouraging and supporting local businesses and industry. Peter also wants to reintroduce the Noosa Safe Initiative which he implemented when last in Council and believes that through collaboration with the community, Council and Police, people can have the confidence in feeling safe and protected when going about their business.

People living and visiting Noosa love the ‘look and feel’ of the place and Peter is committed to ensuring community values and expectations are maintained. Asked why he is running for council, Peter said that is simple. I love the place, I am passionate about the place and I care about the place. Peter also said that he has previously demonstrated in the past that he will listen to, talk with, respond to and represent the whole community. He is keen, willing and committed to being your independent voice in Council. Peter McGregor is totally independent and has no alliance with any group, party, organisation or association.

WELL known Noosa businessman, sportsman and former Noosa Councillor Bob Jarvis is well into campaigning as a candidate in the Noosa Council Election. Bob says, “Many people had come into my shop over the past few months and asked me to stand as a Councillor,

particularly as this is an important point in Noosa’s history as we regain our local Shire. After a spell from being a community representative I have decided to roll up my sleeves and really get back into it. “Having our Shire back is a great positive for Noosa, but it also presents a challenge as we are no longer a small fish competing with many other small councils in a big sea for funding and resources. “This time we are a small fish competing against a few much larger regional councils. “The key for Noosa is to maintain and promote our point of difference as an advantage - that is our great lifestyle and special environment

and landscapes. “As a Councillor, I will work to continue to protect our point of difference.” Bob is running with the tagline “A vote for me ... is a voice for you”. Bob also says ... “I will also work to encourage businesses (through incentives) to source products locally where possible therefore sustaining locals in jobs…. I will work to restore kerbside cleanups…. and push for an expansion of rate rebates to residents that have implemented significant sustainability measures ... and work towards better roads and public transport, support for seniors and ensuring community groups and activities are supported

by Council…Most importantly I will fight to stop rate rises over the next two years….I will also continue to oppose any Coal Seam Gas CSG activity in Noosa Shire.” “For the past five years the community of Noosa was marginalized as we had our right to determine local affairs taken away from us and we were in danger of becoming just another urban suburb. “Now we have our chance to make a positive change for our future and to determine that future on our own terms with locals listening and acting for locals in a new Noosa Council.” Bob Jarvis’ grandfather and father fought for Australia in the First

and Second World Wars and that service to the nation had a profound influence on the young Bob. Bob goes on to say: “My grandfather used to say ”Actions speak louder than words”, so my “Action” is stand as a Councillor and vote on local issues, the issues local people care about, the way the local community wants me to vote as we have not had this opportunity for a while and we should make the most of it for the future of Noosa. “I care about keeping the Noosa dream and experience alive. I’m back and working with you, the local Noosa community, for a better and more positive future.”

Bob has his priorities right

THIS weekend, Noosa will enter a new era. The formation of our new council will see us turn the page and start a new chapter we can all be proud of. For the first time, the Noosa community will have the opportunity to elect a Mayor and ALL six Councillors. Noosa Council will need a solid commitment in the development of a sustainable economy, environment and lifestyle. To be successful, they will need to work as a team to build a solid foundation for Noosa’s future. Make no mistake, this new journey will be challenging. There will be tough decisions

needing a steady hand guided by compassion, experience and patience. I have spent 30 years in local government. I bring with me: experience, leadership, commitment and results. Experience: I bring a steady hand during Council debate and a passion for our community Leadership: by providing wise counsel in deliberations to support the enthusiasm of a new Council. Commitment: leading by example. I’ve put a lot of blood, sweat and tears in the way Noosa looks and feels today and I’m keen to ensure that isn’t threatened in the next 2 years if elected on November 9. Results: by using my extensive networks to help Council open doors to Government and Industry who will play a large role in Noosa’s future. It’s crucial Noosa Council gets off on the right foot from January 1. I believe I can provide the new team with some of the stability it will need to make sure this happens. If elected, I will continue doing the sorts of things that I have done for many years. My priority will be helping to shape a council that is responsive, sustainable and customer focused. I will also work to ensure Noosa Council’s financial responsibility. This is the council this community fought so hard to maintain in 2007, and has worked so hard to reinstate ever since.

A happy and healthy retirement By Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management IS retirement on the horizon for you? Have you started to think about what that means? Here’s a checklist to help gather your thoughts. As you enter the home stretch, the concept of retirement is slowly becoming more real. You’re starting to think more clearly about what sort of retirement you’d like. Now is a great time to start getting fit for your retirement future. Here are seven things to think about as you get your retirement plan into shape. 1. Invest with your head, not your heart When you’re investing your retirement nest egg, it’s easy to react emotionally, rather than examine the evidence rationally. This can lead to making poor investment decisions, such as moving your money around at the wrong time or trying to chase returns. By focusing on the three investment pillars—income, security and long-term growth—you can avoid making rash decisions. 2. Do it yourself In the lead-up to retirement, many Australians are turning to self managed super funds (SMSF) to take more control over their super. But SMSFs may not be for everyone. With more control comes more responsibility for compliance, investments and administration. Most SMSF owners find it pays to seek financial and taxation advice. 3. Make a smooth transition

Retirement used to represent a sharp break with the past. But these days, the transition doesn’t need to be so abrupt. A transition to retirement strategy allows you to continue working and contributing towards your super, while starting to draw an income from your retirement nest egg. 4. Maximise your Age Pension With all the focus on funding our own retirements, it’s easy to lose sight of the important role the Age Pension can play in boosting your retirement income. With careful structuring of your finances, you can maximise your benefits and help your retirement savings last the distance. 5. Prepare for aged care When we think about our retirement, we tend to focus on the early years. But there may come a time down the track when you need more help, whether it’s at home or at a residential care facility. Careful planning can help you choose the right option when the time comes. 6. Plan your estate A good estate plan will distribute your assets according to your wishes, protect your family’s interests and make sure your dependants are not hit with unexpected tax bills. It will make sure the right funds end up in the right hands at the right time. 7. Crunch the numbers Retirement isn’t just about the

dollars and cents. It’s about health, wealth and happiness. It’s about generating an income, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and using the skills you’ve built up over a lifetime to develop new hobbies and help others. But the numbers are a good place to start. How much have you saved and how much will you need to live on when you retire? If you get the numbers right—if you plan and prepare well—you’re more likely to get the lifestyle you want. You can live the way you want, where you want, doing the things that you love—spending more time with the grandkids, exploring new countries, enjoying good food and wine with friends. Doing your homework now can help you enjoy a better retirement down the track. Want to know more? Cooroy Community Gardens ONCE a month the Cooroy Community Gardens schedules a working bee at their Emerald Street sight. Tasks planned for the 13th of October included Keyhole garden, planting a mulberry tree, the making of fertiliser sausages and for the children the making of paper. All tasks were completed and a great day was had by all. The committee organises different activities to share helpful ideas that keep the gardens growth moving forward. Our next meeting will be held on the 9th of November at 4pm. It was decided that a Saturday afternoon working bee would be a bit cooler for all those that would like to attend. Activities on

the day will revolve around our float for the Christmas in Cooroy parade. Costa and Rosina, both live-in gardeners at the Cooroy Community Gardens will invite some of their friends to join in with the afternoons activities. Please come along and stay for an early dinner, with plate to share.

AGM COOROY Community Gardens is holding its Annual General Meeting at the Badminton Club in Emerald Street Cooroy on Thursday 28th November 2013. Start at 7pm sharp. All welcome.

Frank promises to bring back culture & transparency of old Noosa Council

I GREW up in Townsville, the oldest of nine children. Living in North Queensland gave me a passion for fishing which along with sport continues to this day. I trained with the railways as a sheet metal worker until joining the air force at 17. After serving in the RAAF for 6 years I moved to Brisbane with my family and worked as a fitter welder until Noosa attracted me with its unspoilt beauty and fish 30 years ago I did all sorts of odd jobs until opening a fruit shop in Tewantin with my brother, Lloyd. This business was very successful and I sold it in 1996 with the intention of travelling around Australia. Instead I was convinced by many locals to run for council and was consequentially elected on a platform of social

and economic ideas in 1997. During my 11 years with the Noosa Council I was instrumental in the streetscaping of Tewantin and the Main Beach restoration. I championed the construction of the ‘J’ which now houses Noosa Community Radio, the University of the Sunshine Coast and provides a venue for community events. I was the councillor who brought the idea of the Biosphere into council and drove it to fruition. Being chair of the works portfolio gave me the pleasure of being able to improve infrastructure across the whole of the shire. My last 4 years with Noosa Council were served as Deputy Mayor. I have chaired and volunteered in numerous organisations. I am currently President of Cooloola Noosa Life Education which promotes healthy life choices to 8500 children a year in schools across this area. I am an active member of the Rural Fire Brigade, former President of the Tewantin Noosa RSL and a life member of the sub-branch. Other memberships include Noosa Heads Surf Club, Sunshine Butterfly Kids and the Noosa Pirates. I like the idea of locals supporting locals and recently set up a new fruit shop in Tewantin. This

Past horse-drawn lifestyle in a new era

philosophy was also the reason behind my financing the establishment of the Noosa Farmers Market of which I am part owner. You will find me there on a Sunday morning selling local produce for my friends from the Bent Banana. I believe by encouraging diversity in business we can ensure that the people of Noosa, especially our youth are securely and meaningfully employed. My main priority in seeking election is to bring back the culture of the old Noosa Council; being open, transparent and accessible to the residents. I believe in fighting every budget time to keep rates low while maintaining the great services we had like the kerbside clean up. I am keen to see net fishing banned on the Noosa North Shore. I will advocate for small business. I intend to uphold the values of the planning scheme and protect the integrity of the biosphere. With my knowledge and love of Noosa, my experience of the history and workings of council and the connections I have built up over 30 years I am sure I can make the reestablishment of the Noosa Council a positive experience for all the residents of the shire.

CARRIAGE Driving—what used to be a necessity in the last few centuries is now a pleasurable and delightful activity. There is a club loosely based in Gympie called the Cooloola Carriage Club Inc. It covers all forms of carriage driving from Combined Driving Events (similar to ridden Eventing) and speed events to pleasure drives and showing. The Club is very keen to welcome new members, especially those that have had no experience with carriage driving or horses/ponies. The Club is affiliated with the Australian Carriage Driving Society Inc (our National body). We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at McDonald’s Conference Room in Gympie at 7.00 pm to discuss

what the members would like to do and usually have an event on the first weekend of the month, but we do try to fit in with other clubs. We have members from Nambour to Tinana South (south of Maryborough) and many towns in between. If anyone would like to learn more about carriage driving and would like to join our club and meet likeminded people, please contact one of the following Committee members. We are only too keen to spruke about our interest: Bronwyn McAdam (President) at Kandanga on 5484 3210 Dot Thomas (Secretary) at Pomona on 5485 1064 Dennis Bagnall (Treasurer) at Nambour on 5441 7624

REMEMBRANCE Day (11 November) marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year Australians observe one minute silence at 11 am on 11 November, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. This year is not only the 95th anniversary of the armistice on 11 November which ended the First World War, but also the 20th anniversary of the interment of the Unknown Australian Soldier in the Australian War Memorial’s Hall of Memory. Residents of Cooroy and surrounding areas can commemorate this special occasion by attending the service at the RSL Memorial Park Cooroy, commencing at 10.30. They will then be invited to receive nibbles and drinks at the RSL club.

Joe to clean up THE smell of urine is overwhelming when exiting your car and you may even have to avoid stepping in a Number 2, says Noosa Council candidate Joe Jurisevic. “One would think you had stepped into a street in a slum in Mumbai, or a well used toilet at the local football stadium that had not been cleaned after a long, hot, month, but this is the truck stop on the Bruce Highway at Pomona, a gateway to Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and Noosa tourism region. Following Clean Up Australia Day several years ago, this site was recognised as an environmental hazard with hundreds of tyres and general waste being dumped down the steep embankment created following road upgrades along this section of the Bruce Highway. Following my raising the issue, Main Roads responded positively by building a 1.8 metre high wire fence along the majority of the asphalt truck stop, and cleaning up the majority of waste on the slope below. Council provided two bins for the use of those stopping at the location. I suggested that toilets would be a good idea at this location as this is the only Highway stopping point between service stations at Gympie and Forest Glen. Main Roads advised that toilets would not be provided as it was considered an unofficial truck stop, and that people should plan their trips better. Main roads had assured me at that time that the truck stop would continue to be monitored, and any dumped waste collected. This issue should have been highlighted by Main Roads staff long before now had this been the case. The steep slope created is also covered in lantana and other weed species. During this year’s Clean Up Australia Day in the Noosa Region, the truck stop was once again discovered to be a dumping ground, with waste now being dumped over and

around the erected fence. However, the worst aspect of the stop, is the unofficial use of it as a public toilet with an overwhelming stench of urine and piles of faeces littering the ground. Clean Up Australia Day volunteers also collected a large number of plastic bottles that had been thrown over the fence filled with urine! This has now become an issue of public health once again, threatening the welfare of the citizens of Pomona and the local environment with the run off from this foul smelling road side stop. “I have been following up with State Ministers and local members since March regarding the health of Pomona residents. To date I have received a response from David Gibson inviting me to meet with TMR representatives to discuss the issue. A solution may finally be in sight with the Bruce Highway upgrade.” Joe Jurisevic Noosa Region Clean Up Australia Day co-ordinator & New Noosa Council Candidate

Camp Cooroora takes up challenge DURING The months of August and September, Camp Cooroora Scout Camp was host to a number of students from the Noosa District High School. The students were taking part in a programme to assist them in learning new practical skills in the building and construction industries. Camp Cooroora Scout Fellowship Chairman Mr. Brian Lund said “We were contacted by Ms. Lanie Hope from the Department of Education and Employment and asked if we could come up with some projects at the campsite that the students could participate in and suit the programme. One of our suggested projects was that they may be able to sand down the dining table and servery’s, plus paint the inside walls of the kitchen.” The construction programme which lasts

one afternoon for 6 weeks, included one week being briefed on health and safety aspects of the industry, a practical afternoon at Noosaville Bunnings store learning the practicle use of some hand tools and three weeks on the job. The last week comprising of a celebration BBQ and presentation of certificates. As it turned out, the students had time to paint the outside of the kitchen and the outside walls of the bunk rooms. The students were supervised by a teacher and the Chaplin from the High School, plus a staff member from Bunnings. Bunnings proudly donated the paint and other items to complete the project. Mr. Lund said that Camp Cooroora was very proud in offering the students the chance to hone their skills of painting at the campsite and were equally pleased in the finished job.

Free buses make travel easy over the summer break FROM 26 December 2013 to 5 January 2014, all public buses and council cabs will be free across the region, thanks to Sunshine Coast Council’s Public Transport Levy and TransLink. By leaving the car at home this holiday season, you could save money in petrol, alleviate parking and traffic hassles, and discover that buses are a convenient and comfortable travel option. Transport strategy portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski said if you haven’t been on a bus for some time, now is the perfect time to try one. “The fleet on the Sunshine Coast is air-conditioned, modern and comfortable and with the recent review in timetables, there is even better connectivity to trains and key locations around the Coast,” Cr Baberowski said. “Each year we continue to get really positive feedback from bus commuters who take advantage of the Free Holiday Buses pro-

gram. This feedback, together with passenger data is reviewed annually, to assess the program’s viability. “I think the most encouraging result from last year’s survey showed that 59% of respondents said they would use public transport more in the future as a result of the Free Holiday Buses program. “While 70% of Sunshine Coast locals, who normally don’t use the buses, enjoyed getting around to visit places on the Coast they hadn’t been in a while—free of charge.“So why not do something great for your pocket and our environment and catch the bus to your favourite holiday spot instead of driving.” The free services include: • TransLink’s Sunshine Coast Sunbus services (25 routes). • Glasshouse Country Coaches services (Hinterland Connect and MalenyLandsborough-Beerwah). • Flexilink services (Boreen Point to Tewantin, Lake Macdonald to Cooroy, Conondale to Witta to Maleny, Kenilworth to Mapleton and Peachester to Beerwah). • Council Cabs services. For specific route times and maps, pick up a timetable from your local council office, library or visitor information centre, or for TransLink’s Sunbus timetables visit translink.com.au or phone 13 12 30 anytime. For Glasshouse Country Coaches, Flexilink and Council Cabs timetables visit the public transport pages on www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or phone 5475 7272. THE last councillor elected to the former Noosa Council is hoping to be among the first in the new. Journalist and school teacher Frank Wilkie, who served just prior to amalgamation in 200708, said re-installing open governance and quality, cost-efficient services were top priorities. “I have a proven track record in council of holding the line against inappropriate development and if elected will again advocate for the protection of Noosa’s points of difference,” Mr Wilkie said. “It’s also critical we rapidly re-establish the responsive, accountable culture within the council that was central to its efficiency and success,” Mr Wilkie said. “Re-installing the open committee meetings, where residents can observe the debate surrounding issues prior to final decisions, is key to re-democratising our local government.” Ensuring the right staff culture was just as important as attracting quality councillors, he said. “State planning laws are such that overscale and inappropriate development can be proposed for virtually any area, as long as councillors or staff perceive sufficient public interest. “For this reason, we are only ever one bad council away from losing much of what we value.” A former Sunshine Coast Environment Council journalism award winner, Wilkie has also worked on management committees of cultural and sporting associations, including the Noosa Longweekend, Noosa Gymnastics Club, Noosa Arts Theatre and Peregian Beach Community House. “I will strive in a fiscally responsible way to assist all community groups achieve their

aims,” he said. The 50-year-old Peregian resident has a unique perspective on local government, having reported on Noosa council meetings for a decade as a journalist and then advocating in them as a councillor. “I’ve witnessed the workings of council, from the inside and out.” Mr Wilkie was elected as representative for the Eastern Beaches in a 2007 Division 4 byelection after Cr Vivien Griffin resigned. “I’ve shown I can work cooperatively with other elected representatives and staff to get the best outcome for residents. “If elected, I aim to build on this approach and look forward to helping make the new Noosa Council one we all can be proud of.”

NOOSA District State High School Year 12 student Millie Gluis has earned a Highly Commended prize in the Queensland History Teachers’ Association History Writing Competition. Millie’s essay on indigenous Australian health, explored the recent failings of government policy to rectify the disparity between the indigenous and non-indigenous state of health. “Today Indigenous mortality rates are just under two times as high as non-Indigenous,” Millie said. Millie believes that without an improvement in social-economic status and cultural reconciliation, there is little hope for Indigenous health. Millie’s history teacher, Wendy Martin is proud of her student’s efforts, with Ms Martin urging the school community to congratulate Millie. “It is great news for the Noosa High SOSE department,” Ms Martin said.

Students learnt about weaponry, armour, battles and knighthood through interactive demonstrations. The Year 8’s were then challenged to shoot a knight with a bow and rubber-tipped arrow. The knight was quick to deflect the incoming arrows with his shield and sharp reflexes. Year 8 student Jack O’Brien-Tucker would have hit the knight square in the stomach, if it wasn’t for the knight’s sharp reflex action. Students completed a workbook as they toured the Abbey Museum, which showcased relics from medieval times, ancient Egypt, the iron age and

Exemplary Practice in Primary Languages Education – Awards for Sunshine Coast Teachers

Alex Huxley on left, Oj Rugins PRIMARY educator Oj Rugins (Cooroy State School) was among eleven high performing Languages teachers across the state, recognised at an awards ceremony held at Brisbane City Hall on Saturday night. The inaugural, exemplary practice awards, presented by State Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek on behalf of the Modern Language Teachers’ Association of Queensland (MLTAQ), celebrate

effective practice as measured against National Professional Standards for Accomplished Teaching of Languages and Cultures. These include the dimensions of Educational Theory and Practice, Language Pedagogy, Language and Culture, Professional Relationships and Advocacy. Nominated by their school communities, the teachers were required to submit written and filmed evidence of their practice. Sensei Huxley promotes active engagement in teaching Japanese to his students through the fun induced by games and drills requiring a total physical response. Similarly, Monsieur Rugins engages his French students through a gestures approach integrated with music and drama to promote the exclusive use of French in the classroom. Presentation formalities concluded, the evening continued with an address by University of Melbourne Professor John Hajek, who demonstrated how success and multilingualism went hand in hand at individual, national and global levels.

Mary Valley Tomato Festival

Workin’ at the carwash

THE Noosa District State High School Interact Convenor and Pomona State School Early Act members with the school chaplain worked alongside the Cooroy Rotary Club to run a car wash at Pomona on Saturday morning, October 26. Over 20 cars were washed from 9am12pm, with each car washed earning the Pomona State School’s Early Act Club $10. The primary school students thoroughly enjoyed hosing down the cars (and each other) and attracting customers to the car wash at the Pomona Caltex by calling out, singing songs and waving signs. Pomona State School Chaplain Paulette Gee was impressed with the number of volunteers at the car wash

and the amount of customers it attracted. “It’s been a good morning. Much better than we expected,” Ms Gee said. The Pomona State School students found working with Bridge Muir, the Interact Convenor from Noosa District State High School, very interesting and they quizzed her on high school life. The majority of the Year 5 primary students assisting with the car wash will start at Noosa District State High School in Year 7 in 2015. “They are keen to continue helping the community through fundraising and projects, and they will be great assets to Noosa High. It was a great privilege working with such enthusiastic and fun-loving kids,” Ms Muir said.

IN January this year, a group of enthusiastic home gardeners decided to try to see who could grow the heaviest tomato. The competition was so successful that they decided to take it a step further and make it an annual competition. They formed a committee of four, later increased to five, to plan a full-blown Festival. However, the Festival is not just about growing tomatoes. There will be a series of tomato-based games, as well as market stalls, gourmet food stalls, a Grand Parade, a fashion parade, music and street entertainment. The Festival will be held in and around Imbil Bowls Club, where there is a natural outdoor amphitheatre looking out over beautiful Yabba Creek. This is where the musicians will be setting up, and the entertainment will go on into the night. Festivities for this year will kick off with a Supper Dance on Friday29th November, where the Tomato Festival Ambassador will be chosen. As an added attraction, Mary Valley Artslink will be holding an Art Exhibition, aptly titled ‘Imbil Alive’, at the Imbil RSL Hall over the weekend. This consists of invited Mary Valley artists, who will each display a selection of their work. Please visit our website www.maryvalleytomatofestival.com for any more information.

dining & entertainment Merci Cooroy - Village fulfills lifelong dream

COOROY RAG

Eric and Francoise Pernoud EVEN as a five year old living in the French Alps, Eric Pernoud dreamed of living in Australia. The iconic Australian drama Skippy fuelled the young frenchman’s love of the Australian bush and his desire to make this country his home. Today, Eric and Francoise Pernoud run the highly successful french patisserie, chocolatiere and homewares business Maison de Provence in Cooroy and truly believe they are fulfilling a child-

hood dream. “Cooroy, I believe is the real Australia I always imagined, close to some of the world’s best beaches, but also part of the Australian bush, with native animals like Kangaroos and great hiking tracks to enjoy the outdoors,” Eric said. “The town itself has a village atmosphere, but has all the amenities we need such as shopping, great schools, library, skate park and medical facilities and never any parking issues or stress. We

really are in the best place.” Cooroy was not Eric and Francoise’s first stop in Australia. Indeed it took 20 years to find the right place to really settle down. “I first came to Australia as a french pastry chef with the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Double Bay and I helped establish Ritz Carlton Hotels all over the AsiaPacific region,” he said. “My passion for the sport of paragliding then took me to the small country town of Manilla, near Tamworth, where we ran accommodation cabins near the world-famous Mount Borah. “These were both great experiences, but when we visited the Sunshine Coast in 2004 we fell in love with the region. Noosa reminded us of the glitzy St Tropez and places like Montville were very trendy and chic, we loved the combination and knew we could run our business here. “Cooroy has everything a young family could want to live and even start a business. With affordable housing, like that proposed at the new Erindale Park estate, there is plenty of opportunity for people to share in this great place.” Like Eric and Francois, the developers of Erindale Park estate, Kev and Val Kelly are passionate about the Cooroy community. To celebrate the launch of the first stage of Erindale Park, they are launching a community competition which simply asks participants to explain -

Angela enjoying her regular coffee at her favourite hinterland cafe Why you love living in Cooroy? In ten words or less, you will be in the draw to win 1 of 2 great prizes worth $500 each from local businesses Maison De Provence, and the IGA Supermarket. For more information about this great competition, the Erindale Park estate and the Cooroy community please visit: www.erindalepark.com.au or contact Samantha Hargrave at Wythes Real Estate on 0417 750 507

ARE you one of the many Australian’s who are trying to lose a few kilos or even just trying to get fit and tone up? Have you been slogging away but not really seeing results? There are many reasons why this might be the case. Diet and exercise are incredibly important to a healthy life. For many, however, diet and exercise don’t work for creating successful, longterm weight loss. Many imbalances within your body can cause weight gain and retention and exercise isn’t the answer for every imbalance. A

certain process, hormone or element important to your body’s function may not be working properly. Thus, it is causing weight gain or preventing weight loss. The reason diet and exercise often don’t always work for weight loss is because, while they do promote total body health, they are typically not targeted enough to address the specific imbalances keeping you fat. To lose weight, you must eat fewer calories than your body burns. However, eating too few calories can cause your body harm; this is known

as very-low-calorie diets, which almost always result in gaining lost weight back. Severely restricting your caloric intake can cause side effects such as hair loss due to a lack of essential nutrients; amenorrhea, or the absence of menstrual periods; muscle cramps; and fatigue. Crash diets can also cause headaches, irritation and dizziness. Eating too few calories can also cause your body to go into starvation mode, in which your body is not getting enough calories and begins to store any foods

you are currently eating into your fat reserves for later use. Your body believes this is the last food it’s going to get for a while and stores it for a time when it’s needed. Exercising too much may make you fatigued and unable to make it through the day. And not exercising enough or doing the wrong type of exercise won’t help you get results and may give you injuries. No matter how much you diet and exercise, it may be nearly impossible to lose weight if you have certain imbalances including insomnia, hormonal issues, poor di-

gestion, Candida, stress, bacteria, viral infections, hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue, heavy metal toxicity and so many more. So of course, it can seem overwhelming but the easiest answer is to get help! Make a Difference Health & Fitness in Cooroy offers a range of services with a naturopath and personal trainer at your disposal to tailor a plan to suit you so you will start seeing results! They offer both one-on-one and group sessions to suit your needs. Visit www.madhf.com.au or give them a call on 5442 6179.

Cooroora United kickin’ it with style ONCE again Cooroora United has finalised its season with some mighty wins on and off the field with two teams reaching the Grand Final stage. The 4th Division Seniors team took on Caloundra for what could only be described as a close and very intense game. Every team member showed their Cooroora Heart as they played not only for themselves,

their team but also their club supporters cheering from the grandstand, including a smooth moving Wombat mascot. Eventually going down 2-1, the team put in a solid effort under the watchful eye of Coach Matthew McNally and manager Tony McCarthy. But it was a junior team, the under 12 boys, who brought home a trophy for the club after a skilful game

Basketball winners

NOOSA District SHS Open Boys Basketball Team won the B Grade Grand Final for the Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools Basketball Association last Friday, 25th October. This is the first time that a basketball team from Noosa District SHS has won a title in this competition, which has been running for the last 12 years. The success of the team can be attributed to their hard work and dedication in training each week since February, 2013. The Open Boys Basketball Coach Chris Powell was pleased with the dedicated group of parents who travelled all over the Sunshine Coast to attend games and assist with official duties at the various games.

“This current season has been particularly close, since the grading games, with every game being won by 10 or less points. It was no surprise that the game came down to the wire, with the team was one point behind Sunshine Beach SHS by one point, with 3 seconds remaining in the game. Miracles do happen, and with a last gasp play a rebounded shot was taken before the buzzer, the shot going in to secure the championship points for Noosa District SHS,” Mr Powell said. The NDSHS team is comprised of genuine hard workers who showed a passion for the game all year and a willingness to improve their skills in all aspects of the game.

with Bribie at their home ground. Again the supporters where present to witness a great game, ending in Cooroora defeating Bribie 2 -0. Mark Micklewright was extremely proud of his young team and it will be exciting to follow this team in the years to come. Many other teams fought hard all season to earn their place in the semi-finals round including the U13 Boys, 14 Boys, U15 girls and 17 Girls. The 14 Boys got through to the Major semifinal but were beaten 1-0 in a very tough game by Caboolture, who went on to become the U14 Boys Grand Finalists. All players, coaches and managers were recognised at the Junior and Senior Presentations at seasons end with some receiving further acknowledgement when the major awards were announced. At a Junior level the players that demonstrated commendable playing skills and sportsmanship included Lachlan Constable - Male Junior Player of the Year, Jessica Trinder – Female Junior Player of the Year, both very worthy recipients of these perpetual trophies. At Senior presentation night, kindly hosted by the Cooroy Bowls Club, the senior teams gathered to celebrate their own seasons and honour a few of their own team mates throughout the night. Matthew Dawson, Captain of the 4 th Division Men’s team, scooped the pool winning the both the Best and Fairest trophy nominated by his coach and manager as well as the Players Players award voted upon by his own team mates. His golden night though did not finish there as he was called back to the stage to receive the Male Player of the Year Medal. He was soon joined by Stephany Mabb as she received the Female Player of the Year Award for her contribution to her Premier Women’s team, working to elevate the club’s profile through a variety of events and for her sportsmanship. Stephany won the Rising Star in 2012 and this was

Cooroy U12 Boys passed over to another worthy recipient, Ellie Breeze, as a junior playing up a level into the Women’s Division, Ellie definitely held her own with her outstanding skills as goalie. Often praised by the coaches of rival teams, Ellie Breeze is player to watch as she moves through the ranks. Roy Helling, won the Golden Boot for the player who had scored the most goals throughout the season. Club awards then went to outgoing Club President - Steve Standish as Club person of the Year to recognise his tireless support as president, coach and groundsman over the last three years and to Frank and Matti Van der Hurst, the prestigious Don Award, for their efforts as canteen managers. Matt Mc Nally was also honoured at the Sunshine Coast Football Presentation Night where he received the runner up trophy in the category of Outstanding Achiever Award 2013. While many clubs hang up their boots during the off season this is not the case for Cooroora, who run a very successful friendly Summer Soccer Competition every Monday Night at the clubs fields. Perhaps this is their secret weapon in player development!! Go Cooroora – Kick some goals in 2014.

WELL known Australian personality Samuel Johnson is gearing up to travel through Noosa on his 15,000km trip around Australia in an attempt to raise $1 million for breast cancer research – and he is doing it on a unicycle! Inspired by his sister Connie, who has been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, Samuel’s ‘Love Your Sister’ journey aims to remind all Australian women to be breast aware in an effort to promote early detection of breast cancer and improve survival rates. Samuel and Connie’s message to Australian women through ‘Love Your Sister’ is simple - Don’t fall into the Booby Trap – Be Breast Aware! “My sister is an amazing woman – vibrant, compassionate and a fantastic mother. After the diagnosis, I spoke to her about what she wanted her legacy to be and told her that I wanted to send her off with a bit of a bang,” said Samuel. “I was thinking she would say something like skydiving, but instead I’ve been given the challenge of a lifetime unicycling around Aus-

tralia and raising breast cancer awareness!” Having started in Melbourne on Friday, 15 February and taking all year Samuel’s ‘Love Your Sister ’ unicycle journey will eventually see him head through Victoria, South Australia, Northern Territory, Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland, as well as passing through Noosa along the way! All funds raised will be donated to the Garvan Research Foundation, a world leader in breast cancer research, and the Eden Monaro Cancer Support Group, which provides financial assistance and emotional support to cancer patients and their families. On Thursday, 7 November on the Noosa Pirates’ ground at Noosa District Sports Complex, unicyclists from schools around Noosa will be joined by well wishers and fundraisers to welcome Samuel to our special part of the world. There will also be a ‘Pink Balls and Bubbles’ fundraising function to take place at Coconut Grove Bistro on Duke Street, Sunshine Beach at 6.00pm on 7 November 2013, which Samuel

Samuel and Connie will be attending. Local co-ordinator of festivities Jasmin Boyd said the cause is one she is sure locals will be keen to get behind. “It been is an honour to be working with Samuel and his passionate, fun and hardworking team. His words describing Connie’s story as being too familiar in too many lives resonated powerfully with me. We hope Noosa locals will get involved on some level and get behind all the fun associated with the celebrations planned for November 7 – it should be memorable series of

fundraising events in Noosa,” she said. In addition his visit to Noosa and breaking the world record for the most distance travelled on a unicycle, Samuel will be going up Mt. Kosciusko, Ayres Rock and down into Lake Eyre as well as performing a series of ‘challenges’ set by the general public throughout his journey. “If me getting on unicycle and slogging it out across the bumpy roads of Australia on a unicycle reminds women to feel their breasts for any lumps and bumps, then it will absolutely be worth it,” said Samuel.

“And in any case, sitting on a unicycle seat for a year should definitely prove that I truly love my sister!” To donate to Love Your Sister; visit www.loveyoursister.org, head to Tewantin or Cooroy Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank, or call 1300 736 677. Shooting for Gold

JAMIE Warner has a dream – to represent his country at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio De Janeiro, Brasil. His colleagues at Eden Rehabilitation Hospital believe that Jamie can convert this dream to reality. Born right here in Cooroy at the hospital where he now works as a Rehabilitation Assistant, Jamie knows he needs to work hard to achieve his goal. Jamie is no stranger to hard work. After a motor bike accident in 2003 left him a below knee amputee, he has battled against the usual obstacles placed before amputees – wound heal-

ing, care of the stump and limb, prosthetic limb fitting, adjustment and gait training, dealing with access issues at home and in the community, overcoming the emotional impact of the loss of a limb, securing employment and supporting a family. Jamie has used the same fighting quality, commitment and determination enduring hours of training and competition in his aspiration to be Australia’s best Air Pistol shooter. Currently ranked fourth in the ten metre Air Pistol after a mere twelve months of competition, Jamie is well on track to achieve his goal to be

number one. It was when his friends took Jamie to a shooting range for his ‘Bucks’ party that he discovered his passion for the precision sport of competition shooting. Initially competing in both air rifle and air pistol events, Jamie made the decision, following advice from Australia’s Paralympic shooting team head coach, to concentrate solely on Air Pistol. The medal collection at home is growing rapidly. The pathway to Rio involves attaining qualifying scores through the Australia Cup and Oceania events. Jamie is currently awaiting news on his selection in the ‘aiming 4 Gold’ elite performance squad to focus on Australian representation at International shooting events. As a valued member of the Eden Rehabilitation team, Jamie provides first hand knowledge and support to patients on the journey to recovery after amputation. The staff at Eden are proudly supporting Jamie and will be holding raffles, competitions and even a staff vs patients ‘mini Olympics’ to raise funds to help him ‘Shoot for Gold,’ We welcome the support of the Cooroy community in assisting Jamie with his Olympic campaign.

sport Tee-off for Breast Cancer Research she tees off on the next hole. To complicate matters even more, the women could purchase Escape Tickets to be used instead of putting, to drop out of a bunker, or to escape a penalty when dropping out of a hazard. Joyce McKay won brilliantly with +13 and Assunta Easton came runner-up with +11. Approaches were taken by Carole Clancy, Freda Bull and Kaye Gilmour. Although scoring caused some headaches, one could not but smile at the end result of the day $518 raised for Breast Cancer Research. Well done, girls!

THE club house was a sea of pink – all shades – when the women came in after their competition on October 17. The occasion was a fund-raiser for Breast Cancer Research and 34 women teed off to win the trophy presented by Jocelyn Rabjohns. We played a Bisque Bogey versus Par which is unusual in itself, as a player must nominate how much of her handicap she uses on a hole before
