Arson suspected in Salvation army blaze

A 14-year-old Cooroy girl has appeared before the Noosa Children’s Court on one count of arson after the Heritage listed building leased by the Cooroy Salvation Army Store was destroyed last week. The Fire Department and Police were called to the Garnet Street address shortly after 7.30pm on Thursday night (October 25) to find the building well ablaze. It took fire fighters about 40 minutes to extinguish the fire but significant damage had already occurred. The building was unoccupied at the time.

Not my fave

MOST Friday afternoons I head to the Cooroy pub to try my luck at the raffles. I never win. I have the same luck with the Melbourne Cup, keno, pokies and two-up on ANZAC Day. It doesn’t bother me because I figure the universe is saving up a really big win for me, which explains my bitter disappointment when I didn’t even get one number in the $70 million Oz lotto last Tuesday. But then again, no one won and depending on the outcome of the jackpotted $100 million dollar draw (that happens before this issue hits the street), the December issue of the Cooroy Rag could feature photos of us sipping cocktails in the Maldives. Obviously, there has been a lot of talk in the office about what we’d do if we won and it’s sad really how small our dreams are. Nice house and car, no work ever again and travel. With $100 million there’s not even that dilemma about how much you can afford to share with everyone else. You know what I mean … “If I give everyone in my family a million dollars each, will I still have enough to buy new BMWs for the kids for Christmas or will I run out of money and have to go back to work.” It’s heady (and dare I say, greedy) stuff. They say money can’t buy you happiness, but I’m prepared to take on those odds. So good luck with your punting people, I hope one of us wins big! And there you have it ... luck, lotto and living in hope ... Having to scrape together our shrappers to buy a lotto ticket ... not my fave! IT’S no wonder we’re all confused, about the world today, Our minds are continually boggling, in a permanent state of dismay, With all the conflicting theories that bombard us day and night, And all the questions and answers, it’s hard to tell what’s right. So many different opinions, are being tossed around, No two experts can agree, common ground cannot be found. The Treasurer says the country’s fine, the Opposition claims we’re broke, Others day it’s all ridiculous, just a political joke. One executive says the boom goes on, especially if he’s a miner, Another says it’s slowing down, keep your eye on China. Economists get in the act, foretell interest rates will fall, And spend the next day trying to explain why they didn’t fall at all. The polls say the Libs are leading, Labor’s on the nose, Another poll next day, shows Labor actually rose. Banks say they are finding it tough, yet super profits still appear, Executives still get their performance bonus, however bad the year. One professor asserts, the teaching level is improving, Then another says the education system’s awful, and learning skills aren’t moving. Medicos and dieticians argue whether kids are getting fatter or fitter, There’s great debate about climate changes, the discussions at times quite bitter. Educationists say for the young to advance, must be computerised, But the medicos stress it’s more important that their muscles are exercised. Some experts claim we shouldn’t go to war, and must bring our soldiers back, But the Defence hierarchy says we should be there, in case of terrorist attack. Two star actors get married, and swear they are in love for life, But a few weeks later they divorce, and he’s looking for a new wife. All the economists, and the so-called experts, don’t really know where the world is at, Actually they are guessing, just like us, you can be sure of that. No wonder we’re all puzzled, and don’t know what to think, The only solution is just ignore it all, and enjoy a nice cold drink. Jim Dunstan

Cooroy Area Residents Group meeting to discuss storm damage prevention Thursday 15th November 7pm CWA Hall Cooroy CARA has invited Alan (Fox) Rogers our Local Disaster Coordinator to talk to residents about how they can best prepare for the upcoming storm season. Alan is from the Sunshine Coast Council and heads the Disaster Management Department. Also present will be Stan Ryan our local SES District Controller. Please come armed with any questions you may have on the topic. “I imagine everyone who attends will learn something valuable from the evening’s discussions”,said Ray Kelly, CARA’s president. One of the aims of CARA is to inform and educate residents of the Cooroy Area, to improve our community. “It’s one of the best places to live, but we all know storms happen so let’s get prepared” said Ray. “We are lucky to have two such knowledgeable gentlemen coming to the one night so I urge residents to come along to the free evening and while you are there join CARA.” CARA was formed to give a voice to residents of the area and that includes people from Tinbeerwah, Black Mountain, Ridgewood and Lake MacDonald to Ridgewood. “We felt as an organisation we would have more clout when dealing with Council and State Government if we formed an association”. said Ray. “We are now officially an Incorporated Association and look forward to welcoming new members.” CARA has also planned a social Christmas get together for their December meeting, so mark the 20th of December on your calendars. Bring along a plate of food and meet some of your fellow residents. More information on this to follow in the next Cooroy Rag. CARA’s February 21st meeting will be a question and answer session on deamalgamation as the polling date for deamalgamation should only be weeks away by then! It’s only $10 to become a member of CARA and after all there is significant research that suggests that being connected and engaged in your community improves your wellbeing! Meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month at 7pm at the CWA Hall in Cooroy. (With a break in January.) For further details email dawn.ray@bigpond.net.au Ray Kelly 0418196216

COOROY has looked pretty in pink during October and it’s all been for a great cause. The highlight of Breast Cancer Awareness celebrations was the Pink Precinct Fun Trail held through the town on October 18. The trail was created by Liz Bleechmore and the wonderful team at Cooroy library and the Cooroy community did the rest raising fun and awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Over 100 members of our community participated by dressing in their best pink outfits and following a surprise trail around Mill Place precinct and various Cooroy businesses and landmarks. Specially created passports were stamped at each location and prizes were awarded for the first to finish, the best pink costume and for bonus points. Gold coin donations were received totalling more than $400 and all proceeds went to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. There was a celebration breakfast provided by Cooroy Rotary, free face painting and fun for all ages. Businesses who took the time to participate were: Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Rotary Club of Cooroy, Cooroora Woodworkers Club, Camphor Laurel Timber Initiative, Friends of Mill Place, Maison de Provence , Jewellery Temptations, Maple Street Acupuncture, Serene Thai, Cooroy Cruise and Travel, Cooroy Family Support Centre, Splashes of Sunshine, Cooroy Newsagency, Wildflowers, Music2grow, Living Yoga, Belvedere News, Cooroy Shoes and Accessories, Cooroy Bowls and RSL Club, Sandpitt Kids, Possum Books, Lucy Cloonan Personal Training and Jenny Morris Tai Chi Group. news Train driver honoured for half a century of service

COOROY RAG IN 1962, the same year The Beatles released their first single Love Me Do, Queensland Rail’s own George Martin started his long career with the railways. Five decades later and the Cooroy resident has demonstrated his longevity in the business and chalked up 50 years of service. Mr Martin followed in his father ’s footsteps and joined the railways aged 15 as a Nipper or ‘Billy Boy’ in a Sunshine Coast bridge gang. “The ‘Billy Boy’ was an entry level position and they did all the runaround work for the gang from boiling the billy to handling the tools,” Mr Martin said. In 1965, Mr Martin transferred to Brisbane and took a position as an Engine Cleaner before moving to the Central Queensland town of Alpha as a Fireman in 1970. “When I was a boy all I wanted to be was a Train Driver, and it was while I was in Alpha that I was able to realise that dream and take the Locomotive Driver’s exam,” he said. Mr Martin transferred back to Brisbane in the

early 1970s before taking a Train Driver’s position in Cloncurry in 1975. Since then, he has been living out his childhood dream working as a Train Driver on both freight and passenger services around the state. “In 1985, I took a post in Gympie and worked the Imbil and Kingaroy line, and drove express freight trains to Bundaberg. “I have fond memories of my time in Gympie; it was a great job and I worked with fantastic people. “Out of all the trains I’ve driven over the years, my preference is still the old freight trains. They were two kilometres long so you had to know your route and how to handle the train,” he said. Fast forward and Mr Martin has been working as a City Train Driver from the Nambour depot since 2000. Despite 50 years on the job, retirement is out of the question for the father of four and grandfather of six (with another two on the way) because he still loves driving his trains.

Jim Benstead, Queensland Rail Acting Chief Executive Officer, said Mr Martin is a well respected and valuable member of the team. “I want to congratulate George for recording this amazing achievement and helping move Queensland Rail forward over the past 50 years.”

Congratulations to Lyn Becker who won a Spotlight voucher through the Guardian Pharmacy Knitting Program. A huge thank you to all the people who knitted garments for those in need.

COOROY RAG BOUQUETS & B R I C K B AT S DURING the last week of the school holidays in September someone kindly pinched the Old Railway Station Gallery’s “Open and Closed” little wooden sign that normally hangs near the front gate. Yeah, a bit old and tatty but it was used every day the gallery was open and we DO miss it! So...if anyone finds it hanging around we’d be grateful for it’s return. Maybe anonymously return it by placing it over the fence near the front gate. This would be most appreciated. BRICKBATS to the drivers/owners of heavy vehicles using Garnet St. A speed limit of 40kph still exists I believe, and the huge sign at the intersection of Maple and Garnet Streets is being ignored! It asks drivers of heavy vehicles not to use Garnet St between the hours 7p.m. to 7a.m. The sign cannot be missed - it’s size is enormous! You are using Garnet St from as early as 4a.m., and I see you every day, not just one or two, but many trucks! This remains a residential area, and it’s grossly unfair to the people who live here that you continue with your unthinking, selfish use of this road at night. BOUQUET to Jodi from Bruce Smith Insurance and congratulations on the fabulous news of a baby due in March. BOUQUET to the main who stopped traffic on the corner of Miva and Cooroy Tewantin Road last week for a koala to cross! west side of the Cooroy train tracks will be officially waged in the Wimmers East Versus West Tug of War at Christmas in Cooroy. “Last year this was a great addition to the program and the challenge was quickly taken up by enthusiastic traders on both sides of the tracks. It is one of those quirky events that really suit Christmas in Cooroy and we were keen to add it to the program permanently. Wimmers Soft Drinks have come on board as a sponsor to make it a reality and we know it is going to be even more exciting and fun this year,” said event Manager, Danielle Taylor. Last year there was just one heat with a mixed team but this year there will be a male and female heat with teams of eight. The Wimmers East Versus West Tug of War will be held at 6pm straight after the Bendigo Bank Street Parade. It should be a great spectacle and lots of fun to watch. So come down and give the traders your support by cheering them on in Apex Park on 1 December! Art & glass exhibition Something for

everyone

ANNIE McDonald and Nicole Voss (nv) are very excited about their upcoming exhibition ‘Summertime & Holidays’. This is Nicole’s first exhibition since she rediscovered her passion for painting again a few years ago. Her inspiration comes from the happiness she feels while blending different colours, giving her the freedom of expression, without the formality of structure, using different techniques and materials to create her unique paintings. Annie has been working in glass (an addiction) for over 25 years and loves the energy it gives her when she fires up the kiln, cutting, designing and creating the glassware, that take 24 hours, then to open the kiln, to see how her creations

have turned out, as it can be unpredictable. Nicole and Annie have been good friends for years and are looking forward to exhibiting their work together. There is a lot of fun and colour in the work they are presenting. The exhibition will be at ‘Rising Sun Retreat’, 8 Bridle Lane, Cooroy, 11 am to 5 pm Saturday 24th November. Enquiries 0407 768 516.

Credit Card Debt versus Home Loan Debt Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy

DEBT can be classified into three simple categories – bad, necessary and good. Bad debt is the never ending credit card balance that you never seem to be able to reduce, let alone pay off. Necessary debt is the loan that most of us need such as a car loan or home loan. Good debt is the tax deductible loan for income producing investments such as rented real estate properties or shares. To get ahead you need to concentrate of paying off the bad debt as quickly as possible and then reduce the necessary debt to a comfortable level. Start with the credit card account and make more than the minimum payments each month. If you have more than one credit card, consolidate the cards into one low interest card account, but make more than the minimum monthly payment. Next target the car or

personal loan. Check with your lender to ensure that you are permitted to make additional repayments without cost. A little extra can save considerable interest and reduce the loan term. If you are looking for a quick fix and if you have the equity in your home, seek an increase in your home loan and fully repay the credit card and/or car loan. If you choose this path, don’t be tempted to grow the credit card debt again. Have a credit card by all means, but have the limit reduced to a much smaller and manageable level. Now that you have consolidated your debts to a lower interest loan, have your salary paid into a mortgage offset account; create a budget that allows you to increase your payments; and change your repayments to fortnightly or weekly. In time this will reign in your bad debt. Then

you can consider borrowing to buy income producing investments, such as property or shares that are expected to grow in value over the long term. This type of good debt can also be more tax efficient as interest repayments on loans to buy an investment property or shares is generally tax deductible. If you have any questions about this or any other financial matter, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings @bendigoadelaide.com.au.

TWO teams of Noosa District State High School students have earned the right to compete at this year’s F1 in Schools National Championships to be held at the 2013 Avalon Air Show in Geelong. Professional Junior team High Voltage Racing and Development Class team Southern Cross Racing finished as class Champions in the recent state competition held at Bundaberg State High School. Both teams recorded the fastest lap and finished as Grand Prix and Knockout winners and both teams were awarded best team portfolio. The year 9 High Voltage team also won best pit display, and best team marketing. The Bundaberg competition has capped off nine months of planning, preparation, manufacturing and testing of their model Formula One race cars. The design process takes into account aerodynamic forces, friction management, lightweight construction and strict control of specifications.

Any errors in dimensions of the car can be costly with time penalties awarded for over or undersize wings or underweight cars. The model cars are powered by a cylinder of compressed carbon dioxide gas and accelerate from zero to 80 kph in fractions of a second. The High Voltage team were thrilled to find that their car was the fastest on track after time penalties were awarded and the Southern Cross team, all rookies, were second fastest in the Grand Prix. Fastest race time of the day went to High Voltage Racing at 1.069 seconds over 20 metres. Both teams will travel to Avalon airport in Victoria in February 2013 for a further two days of competition and a chance to be at one of the largest air shows in Australia. The best Development Class and Professional Class teams from the National Championships will represent Australia at the world competition.

NOOSA District State High School staff and students wore their best and brightest pink outfits and put on their running shoes in support of the Cooroy Pink Precinct Fun Trail, which raised money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation last Thursday morning. Participants donated a gold coin to the National Breast Cancer Foundation to obtain a special passport. The passport was stamped at different locations and businesses around the township of Cooroy as the fun trail was completed. Prizes were awarded to top place-getters and the best pink costume. The Cooroy Rotary hosted a hearty barbeque breakfast for the participants who had worked up a healthy appetite following their walk/run. Proceeds from the breakfast were also donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Organisers were impressed with the local State High School’s support of the worthwhile cause. A bright day for Summer NOOSA District State High School Year 10 student Summer Johnson took out top medals at the athletics State All Schools Competition held in Brisbane last week. Summer was placed second in the 90 metres hurdles and third in the 100 metres sprint. She did a personal best of 12.61 seconds in the sprint. “It felt really good to win two medals and make a personal best time,” Summer said. Summer became interested in athletics 4 years ago when she joined Little Athletics. Sally Pearson is Summer’s biggest

inspiration and she is grateful for the support of her family, friends and coach. “My coach and parents are my biggest supporters,” Summer said. Summer trains four times a week at Reid Park through the Noosa Athletics Club. The Nationals held in Hobart on November 30 are the next big challenge for Summer. Summer hopes to bring back the gold medal for the 90 metres hurdle event. Noosa District State High School staff and students wish Summer all the best in this big, important event.

COOROY RAG

WITH summer starting to remind us it’s on its way, volunteers from the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) are ready for action. This bushfire season, nearly 34,000 volunteers Queensland-wide will once again show us they’re serious about protecting their community. They come from all walks of life with a range of skills, but there is always a need for new members to keep brigades running in areas not covered by urban firefighters. Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade First Officer, Harry Kirk says it’s just about giving back. “Rural Fire Service volunteers are actively involved in our community and apart from fighting fires we also assist with flood and storm events in the region,” he said. “Positions range from operational roles, including firefighter, first officer and brigade officer through to nonoperational roles. Our members need to be at least 16 years of age and we have volunteers actively involved in community education, administration, fundraising and incident management. In addition to responding to fires, Rural Fire Brigades also undertake a range of planning and preparation activities throughout the year to prepare communities for the fire season. It’s a big commitment and it can be really hard work, but very special to be part of,” Harry added. A valued partner for Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade in recent years has been the Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank. They have

We’ll don the aprons from 10.30am and be serving cake and cool drinks to all who would like to attend,” Fiona said. “We hope lots of customers and locals will come along and we’re excited about sharing our milestone and remain proud to support the inspirational efforts the volunteer crews put in year round” she concluded. To find out more about becoming a volunteer with the QFRS, visit www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au or contact your local Rural Operations Area Office. How “super” is your Super? IF you’d like more control over your super to help maximise your financial freedom in retirement, then a self-managed super fund (SMSF) could be for you. SMSFs can provide a lot more flexibility and control than general public offer funds. Members of SMSFs are also normally the trustees, which puts them in the driver’s seat to owning their tomorrow’s today. So it’s no wonder we’ve seen more than 900,000(1) Australians invest their own superannuation and retirement funds into SMSFs now worth approximately $439bn, propelling them into the largest sector within the Australian superannuation system. And with more than 36,000(1) SMSFs being established in the last twelve months, this growing trend is set to continue.

However, with greater flexibility and control comes greater responsibility. And as with all super funds, SMSFs require constant monitoring to ensure ongoing compliance with ever changing SMSF-related laws and regulations. Without this ongoing management, a SMSF trustee could face financial and personal consequences for breaching any one of the various SMSF-related laws. That’s where we can help. We are accredited by AMP Financial Planning – Australia’s largest specialist provider of SMSF administration and advice, helping you to take control of your tomorrows with a tailored SMSF solution. We can make it easy for you to set up and run your SMSF and enjoy all of the unique features and benefits without the administrative and compliance headaches of

trying to stay up-to-date with regulatory changes. Why we have Pre Purchase pest inspections AM I alone in this? I just thought that a pre purchase building and pest inspection was just something we had to do when buying a house. But actually it’s really important. I am not going to comment on the building side, I will leave that up to you to decipher. But please read your pest report carefully because you could be buying a lemon. And this goes especially to new immigrants to Australia. The termites in this country can eat you out of house and home. I always remember when we bought our first home and the seller said he was very proud of the shed because he had it built 75mm higher than the level of the driveway and I thought to myself “Why is he telling me this? Weird!” Aha!! So he could see any termite tracks leading into the shed. When reading your report check if there is a current termite treatment in place. Make sure the building is termite free. If the pest controller finds live termites or a nest in the gar-

den, get them treated immediately or ask the seller to do it as a condition of purchase. If the termite treatment is not current you may be able to negotiate as part of the purchase to have the seller pay all or ½ the costs to have one installed. Make sure that it is done by a reputable pest controller and that it is done correctly, not all buildings suit chemical treatments, so you may require a baiting and monitoring system. Have another termite inspection done after the treatment is installed. Have it completed by an independent pest inspector, so you can double check it has been done properly. Read all the suggestion made by the pest inspector, fix them if you can, this will reduce the risk of termite attack. Again may I suggest you use a pest inspector who is independent of the seller, conveyance company and/or real estate agent. Lorna www.cooroypestcontrol.com

TRADITIONALLY most people think of mobile apps as games but we are starting to see larger businesses develop their own apps as a way of engaging their customers because they know that for most people, their mobile phone is an essential tool that is never out of arms reach, unlike their computer. Andy and Nova Flitter have come up with a different twist and have developed an app for the whole town so that locals and visitors can have all the information they could ever need about Cooroy, its businesses, clubs and community groups at their fingertips whenever and wherever they want it. “Having lived in Cooroy for 11 years, we hit on the idea of a community app for mobile phones that would act as a directory of everything that’s great about our town,” said Andy. “Once we started the research for the app, we were amazed at the number of businesses, clubs and associations that are based in and around the town that even after 11 years, we didn’t know existed and I imagine there are many other residents that will also be surprised at the diversity that surrounds us. So much so that, since we started, I have gone back to playing summer Soccer, taken up Bowls, joined the chamber of commerce and we employed a local printer to do all our cards, whereas before I had been using a firm in Noosa. “We’d been toying with the idea of mobile apps for some time and as with any new technology, it’s been a steep learning curve. Then a short while ago we found a method of building information style apps that could not only be updated and expanded in real time, but also pass the stringent approval processes to get the apps

into the two main marketplaces, Google’s Play Store and Apple’s iTunes. “In fact the biggest hurdle was passing Apple’s manual review process. Every app submitted is thoroughly checked by their technicians and every link and feature has to work perfectly or it is rejected, which means revisions and then another 3-4 weeks wait for a second review – it’s a bit like waiting for your exam results – fortunately the Cooroy app passed with flying colours first time,” said Andy. Other features of the app include contact details for doctors and allied health professionals, local schools, churches and community groups. There is also access to bus and rail timetables, a user contributed gallery of photos from the town and even a car finder that you can use to ensure you never forget where you parked your car, wherever you are in the world! “We really want the community to get involved with the app and the way it develops, if there is a feature you would like to see, let us know and we’ll work our way towards including it. We also want members of any clubs, groups or associations that are holding events or fundraisers to let us know so we can include them in our What’s On calendar and let everyone know when and where they are,” he said. The app is now live in both Apple’s iTunes store for iPhones and iPads and Google Play store for Android phones such as Samsung and HTC. To download the app for Free, use your phone to visit your app store and simply search for COOROY or visit our website www.thecooroyapp.com for more help. If you are unsure on how to download the app to your phone, or have any questions about this or other apps for busi-

ness, come along to the Cooroy Library on Friday 9th November anytime between 2pm and 4pm and Andy and Nova will show you how it’s done, explain how the app works and answer any questions you may have.

Community bank offers university scholarship ONE Year 12 student from Noosa District State High School will soon be adding to their graduation celebrations. Well known for its support of the annual Australian Business Week (ABW) activities, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank will now pledge its support to one local student when their new scholarship program opens in early December. Branch manager, Fiona Hutchings said providing support to a local student to further their tertiary education was part of the Community Bank branch’s commitment to the school and building a stronger community. “The high cost associated with tertiary study can have a significant impact on a young person’s ability to further their education. Because of this, some may not get the chance to achieve their academic dreams without some help. The scholarship is designed to assist regional and rural students planning to attend university for the first time in 2013,” Ms. Hutchings said. ‘’Our Cooroy Community Bank branch is proud to support local youth by furthering their education and easing some of the financial pressure on the recipient and their family. Maybe one day our community will benefit directly from the skills and knowledge they bring,” she added. The Cooroy Community Bank Scholarship will support a local student with tertiary and study related costs. The successful applicant will receive funding of $5,000 for one year and depending on academic performance, the scholarship will be renewed to assist the second year of their study. Noosa District State High School principal, Chris Roff said he was delighted with the news that another NDSHS student will attend university next year, thanks to the generosity of the bank. “This will be the first year that this scholar-

It will be such a great start for the lucky recipient. We’re also very happy to strengthen our relationship with Fiona and her team at the Cooroy Community Bank branch - it’s a great initiative,” Mr. Roff said. Applications are invited from eligible students from Monday, 3 December 2012 on line at www.bendigoadelaide.com.au/scholarships and will be assessed in early 2013 with the lucky recipient announced in time to put the funds towards set up costs for university study. In the meantime, brochures are available from NDSHS reception or by visiting the Cooroy Community Bank branch at 36 Maple Street or by calling 5447 7131. The Cooroy Community Bank Scholarship is part of the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Scholarship Program, with several Community Bank branches and other partners taking part from across Australia.

PROTECT your property from severe weather events. This is the time that all regional farm and property owners should prepare their property and review their policies to ensure they’re adequately covered for severe weather conditions expected over summer. The Bureau of Meteorology’s seasonal outlook for this summer points to higher than average temperatures across much of Australia – and there is an increased

risk of bushfires as a result of increased vegetation and associated higher fuel loads, following the wettest two year period on record. Whilst summer is a time we all look forward to, agencies such as the Bureau of Meteorology and emergency services organisations are on high alert for an increased risk in a range of severe weather conditions such as flooding, bushfires, cyclones and thunderstorms, which are common at this time of year. Prevention is the best way to protect your property when these warnings arise. Rural fire services organisations provide excellent checklists for preparing your property, such as clearing up vegetation and preparing an evacuation plan and the like. This is also an important time to review your insurance policies to ensure that sums insured are up to date and reflect true replacement values. Any recent changes to your home and lifestyle can mean you may need additional cover, to ensure in the event of an incident occurring your levels of cover are adequate to enable you to get back on your feet financially without experiencing undue hardship or delays. Situations where you may require additional cover include: Recent purchase of farming equipment; Upgrade to onsite sheds or workshops; Recent upgrades to home entertainment, technology or whitegoods; Renovations to your home such as a new kitchen, bathroom or outdoor pergola; and Extensions other to your home. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Insurance brokers are trained to analyse your situation and to recommend appropriate levels of cover and policies to best suit your particular situation. We are here to service your needs and offer you all assistance.

Got your drains ready for the wet season?

IF you’re looking for a barbecue you should have a look at the outstanding range of Weber barbecues, Australia’s No1 brand. The best place to see Weber is a specialist like Barbeque & Fireplace Centre. They have the entire range of Weber Barbecues (10 charcoal and 15 gas in all) from the portable Weber baby Q, $299, to the ultimate Summit E-6&0 6burner barbecue with side-burner, rotisserie, infrared burner, sear station and smoker for $4999. They also have the accessories, cookbooks, spare parts and real Weber know-how. There are four ranges of Weber gas barbecues the Weber Qs, the Weber Spirits, the Weber Genesis and Weber Summits. Compared with ordinary barbecues, they all offer outstanding advantages: • They feature specially angled bars that form a roof over the gas burner tube(s) so no meat juice or fat comes in contact with the flames. Instead of catching fire, meat juices sizzle and smoke on the hot bars while excess fats fall

harmlessly into the disposable fat tray underneath the barbecue, not a messy tray or sand trap. • Cooking with the lid down ensures that smoke trapped under the hood is circulated all around the meat, imparting Weber ’s unmatchable flavour. • Specially designed stainless steel burners in Weber gas barbecues use less gas than ordinary barbecues, yet they cook just as fast. • Barbecuing with the lid down not only delivers better flavour, but you also eliminate the spitting fat problem that leaves those filthy fat stains and barbecue grease on your patio or brick paving. • Cooking grills are either porcelain-enamelled

Cr Tony Wellington Electorate Open Office SUNSHINE Coast Council Division 12 representative, Tony Wellington, will be holding a series of “open office” opportunities throughout his electorate in November. He will make himself available at six localities, so that residents can come and speak with him directly. “I made a commitment during my election campaign to be available to everyone,” he said. “Of course I have already been meeting with many residents and also attending a range community group meet-

ings. But this new initiative allows residents to come and meet with me in their local area, and thus to discuss matters of concern, without having to make an appointment.” Cr Wellington will be available on: Tuesday November 13th at Cooran Hall between 1.30 pm and 2.00pm; Pomona Community House between 3.00pm and 4.00pm; and Cooroy Bowls Club between 4.30pm and 5.30pm. Thursday November 29th at Kin Kin Hall

between 1.30pm and 2.30pm; Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club, Boreen Point between 3.00pm and 4.00pm; and Tewantin CWA Hall between 4.30pm and 5.30pm. ”It will be interesting to see how many residents avail themselves of this opportunity,” says Cr Wellington. “Hopefully some will mark it in their diary and wander in to chat. The more people I meet, the more I learn about local issues.” For further information, please contact Cr Wellington’s office on 5449 5244.

Helping Queenslanders for 30 years by Carol Watkins, Deputy Local Controller, Sunshine Coast North

THE Bureau of Meteorology has amended its summer forecast. Previously we were advised to expect typical periodic flood events which shouldn’t be as widespread as previous years. Now they are predicting a wetter than average summer. So it seems no matter how good the science is, weather patterns remain unpredictable. Remember, in an emergency, the number to call for SES assistance is 132 500. And keep those gutters clean, tree branches away from roofs and yards free of items that can be picked up in the high winds of storms. Some of our members were on duty for the Pink October Fun Walk/Fun Run during the month. This event is now run annually from the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre and appears to be a success. The particularly interesting, and marvelous thing about this event was the number of

volunteers there. The wonderful volunteers from Rotary were there barbecuing and providing breakfast for the early risers; the bright pink t-shirts and polo shirts from the huge number of Mill Place volunteers were everywhere; and of course our orange could be seen at key points along the course, keeping the participants in the event safe, crossing the roads. It was a true reinforcement of the community spirit in our town of Cooroy. Another huge event is looming. Christmas in Cooroy is coming and it seems each year it gets bigger and better. We need around 19 of our members for this, with the whole town centre being completely closed down for around an hour, and some of Maple Street for an extra 2-3 hours for the festivities down near Mill Place and the Lions park. It is a big exercise for us and the opportunity for some of our newer

members to at last become involved in community activities. All of the new members who joined us in July now have their official ID numbers, most have achieved the first rank of Community Members and some are well on the way to achieving the rank of Field Officer. This is good news as the existing members will have more hands available to help during storm season; and the new members can see that the training they have been undertaking is getting results. We are always looking for new members and the next intake will be early next year, in February 2013. For information on joining the S.E.S. contact one of our Group Leaders: Pauline Eglington on 0427 349218; for Pomona, Evelyn Buchanan, 0428 571213; Tewantin, Murray Caddie, 0410 512535; and for Boreen Point, Ron Williams 0488 795102.

pomona Quad bike business approved

COOROY RAG

“An independent consultant assessed the applicant’s acoustic report and determined that noise will not be an unreasonable nuisance for residents. “Council has placed conditions on the operation of the business to limit noise impacts. Tours will be limited to two tours a day, Monday to Saturday and no tours on Sunday or public holidays.” Councillor OPray said the proposed development aligns with council’s goal of creating a more robust economy. “Building a mature, diversified economy means enabling growth in sectors like the tourism industry,” he said. “The addition of a diverse range of activities that appeal to different visitor groups is essential for a sustainable economy, particularly in hinterland areas rich in natural appeal. People interact with the natural environment in different ways and giving visitors more options will generate greater interest in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. “Council supports economic growth and job creation for locals and that means supporting local home based business too.” Council received 24 properly made submissions of which 13 supported and 11 objected to the application. A total of 709 not properly made submissions were received of which 585 supported and 124 objected to the application. One not properly made petition was also submitted to council with 155 objections to the application.

SUNSHINE Coast Council has approved an application for a home based quad bike tour business at Tablelands Rd, Cooran. Economic Development - Tourism, Sport and Major Events Portfolio Councillor, Jason OPray said development approval means the private residence can be used as a base for the operation of a quad bike business. “They will be able to store 12 quad bikes and can use their property as an induction area for tourists who will be given instructions on how to safely operate quad bikes. “The application was for the private residential component of the overall business plan and does not include the National Park. “The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection has already issued the business with a Commercial Activity Permit for tours through the National Park. “And Queensland Police has issued a conditional permit for the use of Tablelands Road and associated tracks within the park. Councillor OPray said the development application has received a great deal of support from the surrounding community, particularly neighbours directly adjoining the property. It’s important to remember that the majority of locals support sustainable tourism in the hinterland. “Council also considered submissions from people opposed to the application. I understand that some people are worried about the noise of the bikes and the potential impact on native wildlife and habitat,” he said.

ALL paths will lead to the Mary Valley on Saturday November 10 for this year’s Mary River Festival. With a reputation as “the friendliest festival you’ll find”, and “something very special” the organisers are planning something even better this year. There’s the new addition of a film tent, a local history tent, recycled instruments, information stalls, an acoustic jam tent and chalkboard, but the anticipated highlight will be the “Sounds of Mary” performance and light show early in the evening. Imagine a performance involving a giant lungfish, a huge Mary River Cod, a threemetre Mary River Turtle woven from that insidious environmental weed Cat’s Claw Creeper, huge puppets of the Mary’s frogs all tied together with a laser light show for which the Mary River Festival has become famous. Festival coordinator Joolie Gibbs said she’s delighted with the way this year’s event is shaping up. “This is a festival about what Tim Flannery has dubbed ‘one of our most special rivers”, it’s a joyous celebration of the resilience of those that live along it and in it, its human and its ecological communities.” From midday till 8pm the Kandanga sportsground will come alive with music, entertainment, good food, dance, great children’s activities and much more. Highlights of the music line-up are Brisbane-based singer songwriter John Malcolm, the acclaimed Hat Fitz and Cara, as well as the return of The Floating Bridges. For many it’ll be a celebration of the Remembrance Day reprieve Peter Garrett gave the Mary just on three years back, but it’s as much about looking forward as it is about looking back; looking forward to increased

recognition of the significance of “our” river and our role as custodians in both better understanding it and better caring for it. Join the community in Kandanga from noon on Saturday November 10 to be part of it. Entry is a mere $2. While you are in the Mary Valley, you can get active and try anything from canoeing and kayaking to cycling, camping, bushwalking and horse riding. This is the place to “come out to play”, check out the website www.maryvalleycountry.com.au for all the details and the events calendar.

news The Life of Harry Fry – A Veteran of Gallipoli

COOROY RAG

THIS time last year we wrote about the community project Adopt a Digger® and its aims for the Anzac Centenary. Harry’s great-grandniece found Harry’s page on the Adopt a Digger website which has set about a chain of events to culminate this Remembrance Day. Harry Fry was born in England in 1866. His family emigrated in 1877 and mostly lived in northern NSW and southern Queensland. 43 year old Harry enlisted in November 1914, sailed for Egypt one month later on HMAT Persic for Egypt, and then with the 5th Light Horse Regiment he landed at Gallipoli. On 28 June 1915 Harry was badly wounded during the attack on the Turkish held Balkan Gun Pits. He was evacuated to a hospital ship, then to hospital in Malta and later London. His wound having healed, but still suffering from shell shock, Harry arrived home in Australia exactly one year from the day of his departure. Harry was discharged as “medically unfit for further active service” on 12th April 1916, due to his wounds, diagnosed as still suffering from shell shock, and granted a pension by the Repatriation Department. In the years from 1916 to 1928, Harry moved around

a lot; he grew bananas in the Cooroy district in 1917-18 and again in the early 1920s. Like so many other returned soldiers the war took a terrible toll on Harry’s mental health. He became a reclusive loner and estranged from his family. When living in Mullumbimby in about June 1928 Harry apparently told the local RSL he was about to move to Armidale in NSW. Less than a year later Harry died in Armidale Hospital of heart disease on 5 March 1929, and was buried in an unmarked pauper grave, paid for by the NSW Police. Nobody took the trouble to inform his next of kin, his sister Ellen, who was still living in Cooroy. His great grand niece, Lila, has been looking for information about Harry for 15 years. In the last 12 months she has located his burial place at Armidale Cemetery. The Department of Veterans Affairs, through the Office of Australian War Graves, has now placed a bronze Memorial plaque on Harry’s grave at Armidale Cemetery, which will be dedicated on Remembrance Day 2012, with a Guard of Honour and service conducted by the 12/16 Hunter River Lancers. A fitting end for a brave soldier. Lest we forget.

dining & entertainment Award-winning German beer in Eumundi products at Dhom’s Kitchen

COOROY RAG

EUMUNDI beer was last brewed in Eumundi in 1992 before the German beer recipes were sold, ultimately to the Japanese brewer, Kirin who ceased manufacturing the famous beers at Brisbane in 2009. Eumundi Winery has long planned brewing of Eumundi beer, first with a beer sales Licence in 2002 and State and Federal brewery licences in 2009. However, Council Planning delays with the brewery Licences forced the Winery to close to the public for over three years. At last, the Winery - Brewery will re-open in early November with locally produced beer, wine and food, a “Bush Taverna or Das Lokal “. The five draft beers; 3 lagers, 1 ale and 1 wheat beer, are brewed to German Purity Laws by a German trained brewer, in collaboration with the resi-

dent winemaker. Only malt, yeast, hops and water are used with no additives, cane sugar or preservatives. The lagers are matured in cold storage [ lagering ] for several weeks and a 7% abv Bock should be ready to drink in 2 or 3 weeks. In time, the draft beers will be available in 2 litre take away bottles or “growlers”, the Eumundi Stubbie. The first stage of re-opening is the revival of the very popular ‘Be Hoppy Hour’, 5 to 9 pm. Craft beer, wine and comfort food, all at comfort prices. Later, when there is spare time after brewing beer, the brewery will again have live music at weekends, and maybe an OctoberFest every month :Oompah pah music, dress ups, steins and buxom barmaids.

The Foodies Guide to Brisbane (and surrounds) has awarded Dhom’s Kitchen the 2013 award for Best Curry Pastes and Sauces. Particular recognition was given to the sourcing of fresh ingredients from Dhom and Spencer’s own garden. Most of the other ingredients used in their preparations they source from friends at the Noosa Farmer’s Markets. The curry pastes and sauces available for sale are the same as those they use in their restaurant. “Our red curry paste is very versatile to make coconut-based curries as well as stock-based curries such as jungle curry” says Dhom. “It can also be used to make stir-fries and Thai fish cakes”. They also stock a range of ready-to-cook curry sauces in pouches: Green, Panang and Massaman curries, to name a few. “With our curry sauces you can have a meal in the table in under 20 minutes, as long as it takes to cook your rice” notes Dhom. They also sell hand made frozen spring rolls and curry puffs which can be cooked in the oven in just 15 to 20 minutes. Dhom and Spencer started selling their product range at the Noosa Farmers Markets several years ago and then continued to make them available when they opened Dhom’s Kitchen in Cooroy in early 2011. Their range of curry pastes, sauces and delicious snacks are manufactured on site in Cooroy and are available for sale during normal opening hours. The 2013 Foodies Guide to Brisbane, an SBS publication, has over 60 listings of provedores, food artisans and producers on the Sunshine Coast. It is an essential resource for those passionate about local food and sourcing those difficult-to-find ingredients. It is available in good bookstores and online as an iPhone app. Lunch: Wednesday-Saturday, 11.30am-2.00pm Dinner: Wednesday-Friday from 5.30pm 1a Garnet St., Cooroy ph. 5447 7710 Facebook: www.facebook.com/dhomskitchen Twitter: @dhomskitchen

Norma celebrates 80th birthday

NORMA Wall’s 80 th birthday was celebrated with a family picnic at Lake Macdonald on 20th October, 2012. She, and her husband Keith were surrounded by their family – 3 children, Linda, Gayle and Bill, 6 grand children – Ben, Kelly, Jade, Kathleen, Joe and Mitchell, their husbands, wives and partners, Rod, Annague, Scott, Kyle, Sarah and Carlie, and all 10 great grandchildren – Jed, Tyson, Milla, Lainey, Ted, Myf, Zac, Paige, Amelia and Eli. Norma’s brother and sister-inlaw Alec and Rene, together with sister Rae and Rae’s family, Peter, Louise and Sebastian, Craig and Angie and Sandra and Jake, helped to make it a very happy family re-union. The birthday cake had 4 candles – one for every score (20) years, because the IGA didn’t have 80 candles in stock and, as one wag put it, we would have to get a fire permit!! Norma was born in Cooroy to Bill and Murial LOWE on 20/10/1932 and grew up on a dairy farm in Ridgewood, with her sisters Audrey (dec’d 2011) and Rae, and brother Alec. After school she worked at Max Walker’s office before marrying Keith Wall and moving to Gunalda, in 1953. The young couple moved back to Cooroy with their toddler,

Linda and Keith worked with Page Motors while Norma helped start the local kindergarten. They then bought Potter’s Garage and started ‘Hydro Industries’ in Maple Street. They built their own home in Kauri St and welcomed daughter Gayle and son Bill to their family. Keith and Norma ran the picture theatre in the Memorial Hall for many years. This busy couple established Wall Motors in Pearl St and Norma kept the office running smoothly for Keith’s mechanical workshop. Norma was treasurer for the Girl Guides and the swimming club, supporting her children in their interests. On retirement, they enjoyed being a part of the Anglican Church, and were involved in Kid’s club, R.E. in the school, and of course the annual church fete. Norma joined Aglow and was their Treasurer for many years and is President of the Anglican Ladies Guild. Since the early 1990’s, Norma delivered Meals on Wheels in Cooroy, with Keith joining her soon after he retired. They have both been very involved in their grandchildrens’ lives, supporting them all with love and kindness and take a very active interest in their great grandchildren. Thanks Norma - Mum, Grandma, Aunty Norma for everything!!

COOROY RAG

WE all know the saying; “You can’t love someone without loving yourself” and the same can be said for looking after yourself; “You can’t take care of someone if you don’t take care of yourself”. Because honestly, how much good can you do for others when you yourself are run-down, depleted, lethargic, in pain, moody, depressed or stressed? We are generally inclined to put others before ourselves, and although this is done with the best of intentions, the results can be extremely destructive. On the flipside, by

putting a little bit of effort into taking care of number 1, you will actually be more willing and able to look after numbers 2, 3, 4 and however many more responsibilities you’ve got! Here at Maple St Acupuncture & Natural Medicine, we are strong advocates for looking after yourselves, and we provide all the necessary services to do it; from Acupuncture & Naturopathy through to Massage Therapy, Hypnotherapy & Kinesiology. Shoulder Pain PAIN in the shoulder can be for many reasons but most commonly it is due to a tear in the muscles or tendons of the shoulder. The group of muscles that surround the shoulder is called the rotator cuff. At the shoulder the main arm bone, the humerus, meets with the shoulder blade, scapula, and the collar bone, clavicle. The rotator cuff muscles help move and maintain stability in the shoulder joint. Why do these muscles tear? Well, the shoulder joint is one of the most mobile joints of the body but to stop us dislocating the shoulder the muscles of the rotator cuff have to work hard to prevent any excessive movements. Year after year this hard work causes wear and tear. So by the time we reach the age of 50 about 20% of us have a tear of some sort within the rotator cuff. The muscles of the rotator cuff consist of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis and teres minor. Supraspinatus abducts the arm; lifts it out to the side. Infraspinatus externally rotates the arm; imagine holding your hand up and waving. Teres minor helps with this. Subscapularis internally rotates the arm; imagine scratching the lower back with the back of your hand. If these muscles tear, either through gradual use or a traumatic injury they cause pain at the shoulder and down the arm(often worse at night), limitation of movement and weakness. Small tears will often cause very little in the way of symptoms and will repair themselves over a period of a few months. Some tears heal by depositing calcium within the tendon or muscle and it is these calcium deposits that limit movement and cause pain. Some tears are associated with inflammation of the soft tissue space around the joint, bursitis. Some tears lead to real stiffness of the joint and the capsule that surrounds the joint becomes stiff and painful. This can develop into frozen shoulder, a painful condition that can take 18 months to 2 years to settle. Some tears are partial, not

involving the whole tendon across, and some are full thickness and more complete. So what do you do if you suffer a tendon injury at the shoulder that cause pain, weakness or limitation in movement? It depends on a lot of factors and there is no simple answer. It depends on age and occupation as this will determine how much function you need. Small tears heal slowly over a few months and can result in almost full recovery. Other muscles and tendons can take over some of the function of the torn tendon and so if pain isn’t too bad waiting a few months will result in good recovery. In addition to the size of the tear it depends on how long it has been torn. Long standing tears cause wasting in the muscle and are more difficult to repair. Compare tying together two ends of a frayed rope versus tying together two freshly cut ends. In addition to just waiting assistance can be found in physiotherapy. This helps keep the joint mobile and prevents frozen shoulder and stiffness. Cortisone injections into the area can help with inflammation and pain. They don’t repair the tendon but can reduce the associated inflammation and can greatly help with pain and mobility. They can weaken the tendon potentially and so shouldn’t be used excessively. Surgical repair of rotator cuff tendons is a highly skilled area and means your arm in a sling for 6 weeks and a few months of physio to get full recovery. Selecting those patients who will benefit the most is the key but in general the younger and more active the patient, the shorter the duration of the tear and the greater the size of the tear then the better the result. If you feel you may have a rotator cuff injury best to discuss it with the local doctor or physio and work out what the best strategy may be.

WHEN it comes to exercise, the idea that something is better than nothing often holds true. But be warned that what you don’t know about exercising can in fact hurt you. Made up exercises, reckless form and improper breathing can lead to undesirable results and even injury. So if you’re unsure about how to work a certain muscle, how to perform an exercise, or how to properly breathe during an exercise, it is in your best interest to find a qualified fitness professional to help you out. Doing something is better than nothing in terms of fitness but creating your own exercises without the proper knowledge of human kinetics can be extremely risky. Each joint has a set distance and direction it can move which is commonly referred to as range of motion. Adding weight or resistance to a joint can force it outside its normal range of motion causing injury which is why it is

critical that the exercise you’re performing isn’t putting your joint in a compromised position. When it comes to exercise, form is extremely important for two reasons. Having good form assures that the muscles you’re working are receiving the full benefit from the exercise. It also ensures that your joints are in a strong and stable position to help prevent injury. When exercising with added resistance, if you’re using bad form techniques like swinging, jolting, or bouncing with the weight, then you’re putting yourself at risk for a potentially damaging amount of stress to your joints and connective tissues. Another often overlooked component is breathing. Oxygen plays a key role in energy production. Therefore, when you exercise you want to adequately supply the body with oxygen by breathing properly. Not only can holding your breathe during

exercise cause a spike in blood pressure, but it can also cause you to faint because it increases the internal pressure in the chest and abdomen. Correct breathing technique can also help improve performance as well lowering the risk of injury. Although doing some sort of exercise is better than nothing, you should be sure you’re not risking your safety to do so. Just remember if you don’t know how to work a particular muscle, how to do an exercise, or how to breathe properly when exercising, it can never hurt to ask a fully qualified fitness professional. If you’ve got questions, give Lee Smith a call at Make a Difference Health & Fitness. He’s a qualified personal trainer certified to work with all ages and fitness levels. He can put you on the track to safe and effective exercise and is only a phone call away on 5442 6179 or visit their website at www.madhf.com.au.

optometry@cooroy gives gift of vision to people in need • Wedding Ceremonies • Master of Ceremonies • Commitment Ceremonies • Life Celebrations • Funerals

LOCAL optometrists, Heather McLeod and Jenny Currie of o p t o m e t r y @ c o o r o y, joined the World Sight Day Challenge during the month of October to help give the gift of vision to people in developing countries and underserved communities. To support World Sight Day, Heather and Jenny donated their eye exam fees from Wednesday 24th October to help the more than 600 million people in the world who are blind or vision impaired simply because

they do not have access to an eye exam or glasses. “This is the first year that we have supported Optometry Giving Sight and we are proud to donate to such a worthwhile cause,” said Jenny. “The World Sight Day Challenge is a great way to help support the millions of people who don’t have access to the basic eye care that we can take for granted.” Heather and Jenny were inspired by stories like that of Loid Semente, who is one of the students training to become

an optometrist with the Mozambique Eyecare Project, supported by Optometry Giving Sight. Loid will be one of the first optometrists in her country. She is passionate about optometry because of the significant impact it can have for the people of Mozambique. “Sight is empowering. For some, access to eye care is the first step towards getting an education, or providing for your family,” she said. Children are especially vulnerable. Providing vision correction to a

school-age child can literally transform their entire life. Just $5 can provide an eye examination and a pair of glasses for someone in a developing country. Optometry Giving Sight guarantees that 85 percent of all funds raised by optometrists and their patients go directly to supporting programs that give sight to those most

in need. Funds raised from World Sight Day Challenge will be directed to projects in 35 projects across 23 countries around the world. optometry@cooroy is located at 62 Maple Street, Cooroy. Call 5442 5555 to schedule an appointment. For more information about Optometry Giving Sight visit www.givingsight.org.

news Lucy’s Lyme Light burning out

COOROY RAG

LUCY Jean McGrail, an 18 year old beautiful young woman from Cooroy, has been suffering with Borrelia burgdorferi also called Lyme Disease for over 7 years. Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread through the bite of the blacklegged tick. Lucy had developed arthritis 7 years earlier with the tender age of 11 years. Arthritis is one of the symptoms caused by Lyme Disease. The infection can also affect the skin, joints, heart, and the nervous system. When the bacterium affects the neurological part of the brain it can become fatal. Lucy and her family have tried for the last 7 years to find out what had caused the development of her arthritis. Her father Gary McGrail states: “We have taken Lucy to hospitals and doctors but been sent away without any treatment or suggestions of what had caused the arthritis. There is a misconception that Lyme Disease does not exist in Australia and doctors are not trained to diagnose the Disease, that’s maybe why nobody could help”. Lucy and her family did some research and came across information on the Lyme Disease. As the symptoms described matched hers, they decided to import the test kit from America after reading about its availability from overseas. In America the Disease is common and known to be transmitted from certain ticks found on deer and other animals. The tick harbors the bacterium in their stomachs. After paying for the test kit and having it sent to Sydney for diagnosis the results showed an infection by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi or Lyme Disease which is also called the ‘Great Imitator’ because it can imitate many other diseases such as MS, Parkinson’s Disease Motor Neuron Disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Lupus, Alzheimer’s Disease and many more. At least 15,000 people with Lyme Disease are diagnoses in Australia (and conservative estimates suggest another 200,000 undiagnosed people). If Lyme disease is not promptly or effec-

tively treated, damage to the joints, nerves, and brain may develop months or years after the infection. Symptoms at this stage include: Swelling and pain (inflammation) in the joints, especially in the knees, numbness and tingling in the hands, feet, or back, severe fatigue. Now that Lucy and her family know what causes all that pain they face a long way of medical treatments, more pain and not knowing what lays ahead for Lucy and if she will ever recover after 7 years of an infection with Lyme Disease. At the stage Lucy is not responding well to treatment and at 40kg is just a shadow of her former self. The cost of Lucy’s treatment exceeds $ 1500 a month easily and this is only for the basics. Visits to specialists and extra medication are not included. Lucy hasn’t been able to work because the arthritis made her wheel chair bound. The drive to see her doctor in Eumundi twice a day for treatment of antibiotics is shared by her boyfriend and her father alternately. There she receives ambulant transfusions to kill the bacteria in her body. To help Lucy and her family the community of Cooroy and Pomona have come together and created a support group. A music fundraiser, on 24 November will be organised to help with the cost of Lucy’s medical treatment and to create awareness of the Lyme Disease. For more information and to help Lucy please call Gary McGrail on 0439 464 463 and/ or donate to the ANZ Bank, BSB 014683, Acc. 378 277 888.

The health benefits of Aloe Vera ANGELA Andrews will be giving a free talk on the health benefits of Aloe Vera at the Cooroy CWA Hall on Saturday, November 10 at 10am. “Most people have Aloe Vera growing in their garden but do not realise that by eating and drinking it they gain much better health,” says Angela. “After giving a talk at a local retirement village I spoke to an elderly gentleman who told me he hated getting out of bed as his whole body ached, so I suggested he try the Aloe vera every morning, about a week later I saw him and asked him if he had tried it he said he had and he wished he had known of this years ago as he could now spring out of bed with no more pain. This was just from drinking the Aloe vera for a week,” she said. “I have spent 14 years researching the Aloe Vera plant and I have learnt many things from it and through my talks I wish to pass this information on to others. Even some doctors I have spoken with are impressed and are now recommending this way of eating and drinking at home while seeing your doctor.” All are welcome to attend.

private well up and away from the front road. A well set-up lockable shed with extra shower & toilet offers caravan drive through storage and undercover areas for tractors etc. 3 kw Solar will certainly assist with on-going power bills. School bus service for local kids, and there is a country convenience store just down the road. This property packs a lot of punch for only $485,000, and if you are a serious buyer this will be very hard to beat anywhere in the Noosa Hinterland. Inspections by appointment only. Phone Paul at Countryside Realty on 0437 346 256.

A slice of heaven, peace and tranquillity WHEN you arrive in flourishing leafy Pinbarren you’re greeted with crisp clean air, breathtaking views. Pinbarren mountain surrounded by lush bushland gives the region its name, nearby is iconic Mount Cooroora which can be seen from far and wide. Only minutes from Pomona and 30 mins drive from Noosa. Perfect property for the horse lover, with a fully fenced paddock that you can overlook with ease. Close to the network trail’s whether you want to jump on your horse and go, or even just walk it on foot. A beautiful, private and peaceful area, so close to every thing but far enough away. Two of the bedrooms have built in wardrobes, the main having an ensuite with a spa. The rumpus/activity room is private from the main area of the house. The joinery is ex-

quisite throughout the property, with a wonderful verendah to relax at the end of the day. The property has excellent ventilation and is very low maintenance. $599,000, 20 Sallwood Court, Pomona. Please call Kirsten von Homeyer 0419 046 823 / 5447 7000 of Hinternoosa for more information.

Get away from it all THIS unique 34.93 hectare property is a credit to the owners with over 13 years of hard work and dedication to create an absolute haven. • Abundant water is available from above average rainfall (1700mm per year), much of which is collected in eight permanent dams. • This arable land provides an option for a sustainable lifestyle based on growing one’s own food, grazing a few animals and aquaculture. Wood from native forest and the plantations will increasingly be available for construction and bioenergy. • New owners wishing to live on the property immediately will find a spacious colourbond shed with a liveable flat, power and water. • For the future, there are excellent building sites, some overlooking dams and having water views. • The farm has a private location at the end of a sealed road. Because the present owners have fol-

lowed eco-friendly practices as much as possible, wildlife populations have built up, and the property is both interesting and beautiful. Priced at $525,000, call Michael Robinson from Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland for further details on 0431 865 616 or at the office on 5485 1788, or call into the office at 8 Reserve Street, Pomona.

Cooroy Golf Club recently won the Zone Final in Nett Pennants. Although one of the smallest clubs in the Zone, our players have been very committed in travelling to other clubs for their Open Days and accumulated the most points for the Northern Division. We beat Beerwah from the south quite soundly in a play-off at Nambour. We will now play against Bargara and Nanango at Goomeri for the District title on 3 November, 2012. PHONE 5447 6033 NOOSA District State High School was strongly represented in this year’s Queensland All School’s Touch Championships, which were held in Brisbane from the 11th to the 14th of October. These Championships are the largest school sporting competition in the state, attracting teams from as far away as Charleville, Mount Isa, Gold Coast and Cairns. Noosa High has been attending this carnival for the last eight years and this year’s teams have achieved great results. The four teams represented were the 15 Girls A, 15 Girls B, 15 Boys and Open Boys. All teams performed well on the field and they were a credit to the school with their outstanding sportsmanship, conduct and behaviour. Best achievements came from the 15 Girls

COOROY MOUNTAIN RD, COOROY

A team (pictured) who continued their success from winning the Wide Bay All Schools Touch Carnival last month, by winning 5 out of their 7 games over the three days of pool games competition. They were unfortunate to not make the finals by only 2 touchdowns. Their performance in most of the other pools would have ensured them a finals birth! Each team selected a ‘Most Valuable Player’; and the four team winners were: 15 Girls A team – Nikki Craige; 15 Girls B team – Fraser Gray; 15 Boys team – Jye Baker; Open Boys team – Hayden Trask. Congratulations to these most valuable players and to all team members on their success during the carnival.
