Volunteers have Christmas in the basket

Trish Bignall is joined by Bendigo Bank's Geoff Edwards and some of the other Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade volunteers It’s hard to believe Christmas is less than two months away. For most of us, it’s a time to spend with loved ones, but for some local families affording the basics at that time of year is also unbelievable let alone any gifts to put under the tree. In 2014, Trish Bignall decided it was time to spread a little Christmas cheer to local families by calling on her family and friends to form the Sunshine Coast branch of the Basket Brigade. It’s all built on a

simple notion: that one small act of generosity on the part of one caring person can transform the lives of hundreds. This year, it’s hoped more than 300 hampers will be delivered to families in need on the Sunshine Coast. Always keen for more volunteers, the Basket Brigade Committee is calling people to donate cash, gifts and any free time readers may have to make a difference this Christmas. Continued Page 3

Huge turnout for Pink Precinct Fun Trail Cooroy’s streets were awash with walkers decked out in weird and wacky pink outfits last weekend, all participating in the Cooroy Pink Precinct Fun Trail. It was one of those typically unique Cooroy events that get a huge amount of community support, is a load of fun and is for a very worthy cause. Over $3,200 was raised for National Breast Cancer Foundation with approximately 250 participants including all ages and even some four legged participants. “The aim of the event is to raise awareness about Breast Cancer, the most commonly diagnosed disease in Australia. It was wonderful to see such fantastic support for the event and particularly how much it grew this year. A big thank you must go to all the people who supported the event from the organising committee to sponsors and participants,” said organiser Carol Christensen, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Secretary. There were loads of prizes up for grabs for best costumes and lucky door prizes and raffles for people completing the trail. There was even some fancy pink entertainment thanks to Nova Star Productions and Aerial Dreaming and a talk from breast cancer survivor, Kerrie Bryant-Adams which was a highlight of the day. Sandy Bolton, Member for Noosa, Councillor Brian Stockwell and Cr Joe Jurisevic all donned pink and joined participants on the treasure hunt around Cooroy. As is always the case in Cooroy, local businesses generously sponsored the event, hosted by Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Belvedere News, Fiona Winter Realty, Cooroy Future Group, Cooroora Woodworkers, Butter Factory Shop, Lou Lou’s Hair and Beauty, Cooroy Drapery,

Students Walk for Daniel

Noosa District State High School student leaders walked alongside Bruce and Denise Morcombe and the Day for Daniel ambassador Sophie Monk to commemorate Daniel Morcombe’s memory and to raise awareness of child safety. Mr Morcombe also spent time speaking to the students, thanking them for their support and posing for photographs. The students felt privileged to have the opportunity to partake in such an important day.

Basket Brigade volunteers hard at work A call out to local businesses is being made as well. One keen to support the cause again in 2018 is Bendigo Bank. Cooroy and Pomona Business Development Manager, Geoff Edwards was on hand this week to present $500 to the Basket Brigade Committee. Trish said it’s a mammoth task, but it’s made easier with the generosity of donations just like this one from Bendigo Bank.

“Their generosity to our wider community is well known and we’re delighted to have them on board again this year. They are also going to collect non-perishable hamper items in baskets placed their Cooroy, Tewantin and Pomona Community Bank branches for us. Every item will count,” Trish shared. “The basket sizes are determined by the size of each family. An age appropriate gift is

included for each family member. The baskets are delivered anonymously but they do include a simple note that says ‘This is from someone who cares. We hope that you can take care of yourself so one day you may be able to do the same for someone else’,” she added. Throughout the year, Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade raises funds and collect donations of toys and other non-perishable

food items. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, they bring all donations together and create food and gift baskets to distribute anonymously to families in need. Each basket contains items to create a wonderful Christmas lunch and additional treats. “While recipients receive a basket full of food, gifts and a caring message, the volunteers also greatly benefit from their participation.

Many volunteers return year after year and bring their family and friends to have an experience of selfless giving at a time when many of us take for granted all the wonderful things we have in our lives. If you would like to help out, the Basket Brigade team would love to hear from you. You can email Trish at sunshinecoastbasket brigade@magicmoments.org.au or call 0410 544 719 for further information.

Its been 84 years since the Pomona-Kin Kin Road Six Mile Creek Bridge (Crossing No. 7) was opened for traffic. The bridge services the local population along PomonaKin Kin Road on the northern side of Six Mile Creek. The bridge is 84 years old and long, long overdue for a replacement bridge wide enough to allow two-way traffic to cross and high enough that crossing is possible when the Six Mile is in flood. Currently after the flood waters recede the bridge has to be inspected before it is declared safe to use again. At times there is a period of 36 hours or longer before the ‘all clear’ to cross the bridge is given. 1488 people took the time to sign a petition supporting this issue some months ago. The Pomona Replace the Bridge Action Group visited our local state member Sandy Bolton with the petition supporting the request for her to take the case to Parliament and also to the State Transport Minister and his department heads to ask for a new higher and wider replacement bridge. “The ensuing growth in our population since the bridge was opened in 1934 shows that it is inadequate for current use,” said Action Group spokesperson, Ron Green. “The Six Mile Creek Bridge is used by quarry trucks and other heavy transport vehicles which includes school buses taking children to and from schools in Pomona and Cooroy. “Many of us are tired of the large amounts of money being spent to repair the bridge to prolong its life. We need some action now to have the bridge replaced. It is understood that this bridge is under the control of the State Government. So, with the assistance from the Federal Government’s Bridge and Roads Replacement Scheme (Roads for Recovery), we request action from these departments for a replacement bridge,” said Mr Green. “Come on! Please do the right thing and replace our 84 year old bridge crossing at Six Mile Creek.”

The Kindness Club would like to highlight amazing people doing kind things in and around town. Our first kind community member is John Ison. John has been a dedicated volunteer of the Breakfast Program at Cooroy State School for the past five years. He joins other wonderful Uniting Church volunteers to serve up to 140 students each Wednesday morning. John then returns each Thursday to help his wife, Chappy Ett, serve breakfast once again. John was a Scout Leader in the Nambour Area for many years and was involved in taking live entertainment into Sunshine Coast nursing homes.

At almost 85 years of age, John is showing no signs of slowing down with his community involvement. John now volunteers at Eden Hospital with a cheery smile, and is involved with the newly formed youth group “Kids on Maple” preparing fun and interesting programs, serving light meals and joining in the games and activities with the kids. John is highly active in the community and is very generous with his time, yet always finds time to help anyone in need. Thank you for being so kind John. You make the world a better place! Do you know of someone sharing kindness in Cooroy?

COOROY RAG Cooroy Pomona Lions

Hello and welcome to Lions Corner. September saw a big fundraising push for the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club to support drought affected farmers and businesses alike in North Queensland. A big thank you to all members of the public who attended the Lions Bookfest on Saturday 8th September. This raised approximately $2000 on the day and every cent was donated directly to the Farmers in Need through 4 of the Lions Clubs located in Winton, Emerald, Longreach and Springsure. Cooroy Pomona Lions also added another $3000 so that a total of $1500 each was sent to these 4 clubs which will then go to support the farmers in most need. Michael Roach, Chairperson for Drought Relief Lions Australia has been touring some of the affected areas – here is an excerpt from his diary to Melissa, Cabinet Secretary. “Michael has contacted me recently - he is currently in Jericho and has reported that Lions have today assisted a family with two young children on a farm 120 kms out of Aramac.

This family had only 1 bale of hay left and Lions have arranged for a truckload of hay to be delivered to their property tomorrow to provide food for their breeding stock. What a great effort that Lions can help save this family’s breeding stock and show this family that Lions are there to help during this difficult time for not just this family, but all of those families affected by drought in Western Queensland.” So every time you put your hand in your pocket at a Lions Sausage Sizzle, Bacon and Egg roll or even a mint located on shop counters, the net profit over the next 2 months will be working towards supporting drought affected farmers and their stock. WHAT’S ON IN NOVEMBER – Saturday November 10 – another Bookfest with hundreds of good reads, reference and rare books for sale at ridiculously low prices. Located in the Lions Den, Mountain Street, Pomona. Thursday 29 November – Pomona in the Park – Lions are catering with all profit going to the Pomona State School P&C. Got a little time to give and want to have fun with like minded people? Become a Lion. Contact Robin on 5485 3236 to see what being a Cooroy Pomona Lion is all about.

BOUQUETS & BRICKBATS BOUQUET to Jason who cleans all the footpaths in Cooroy township each morning. Great job mate! ~ Joe (Harvest Fresh)

When walking through the park in Cooroy recently I saw one waste bin at the play park/BMX track. There was no recycling bin. Next to the skateboard park there were 2 bins back to back. These appeared to both be recycling bins as they had pictorial instructions on the lids, but the lids were red and not yellow, and they also stated ‘Waste Only’. There was no waste bin present. We are all trying to recycle as much as possible but this is very confusing. Something has gone wrong. Jim Bird

Mum and Dad Investing Simone Flavelle, Senior Branch Manager, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches We often hear the term “Mum and Dad Investors” bandied about in the media, but what does it really mean? It’s used to identify a group of investors that typically have less than $100,000 of investable assets, not including their home or superannuation, who want to increase their wealth and who may have little experience with or knowledge about the share market. One of the important things to remember is that investing in the share market should be seen as a long term strategy. However, one of the problems with everyday investors is that they often buy when the market is at its peak. This is usually after the media has started reporting on the various “booms” and the incredible gains to be made. The problem with this is that the by the time the media hype is in full swing, prices have already been affected and it is too late for the everyday investors. Unfortunately many Mum and Dad investors also sell at the lowest points in the market after hanging on for a white knuckle ride through the plunge and realising how much money they have lost before deciding the share market is too risky and they want out. As infamous Australian stockbroker Rene Rivkin used to say, the trick to successful share investing is to turn this on its head by buying in gloom and selling in boom. Try to buy when ever your instinct, the media and all of your friends are telling you not to. There are many things to consider before you begin investing in the share market. These include your acceptable level of risk;

your desired return: and whether you are planning on borrowing to invest. Try to talk to as many informed people as possible. Attend seminars, but be wary of those that ask you to invest in their particular product or use high pressured selling techniques. Have a free consultation with the Financial Planner at our Cooroy or Pomona Community Bank branches and meet with your accountant to discuss your options. To talk more about this or any other banking matter, please call into the branch or call me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona). Roads to be re-sealed

Do the right thing and wheel it back in Council is reminding residents and business owners to bring their bins back in from the street promptly after they’ve been emptied. “As well as being an eyesore, bins left on footpaths get in the way of pedestrians and cyclists and force them to have to walk out on to the road to get past,” says Council’s Waste Manager Wayne Schafer. “In outdoor dining precincts the smell from bins left on the street can be off-putting for café and restaurant patrons. “Sometimes bins even end up in the road shoulders where they prevent access to parking spaces and potentially pose a hazard for drivers.” Mr Schafer said Council’s bin policy sets out

when and how residents and traders should place their bins out for collection. It also gives Council the power to enforce the rules, which apply to all three bins – general rubbish, recycling and garden waste, including wheelie bins and bulk bins. He said in most cases wheelie bins should be placed at the kerb on the evening before rubbish collection day, or by 6am on collection day, and moved back in as soon as possible after they’ve been emptied. “Where there are nearby outdoor dining areas, bins should be put out only after customers have finished dining on the evening before collection day. Alternatively, place the bins out before 6am on collection day,” Mr Schafer said.

As part of Council’s reseal and rehabilitation program, work will commence shortly to reseal various rural roads in the Noosa Council region. Work will commence mid-November 2018 and take approximately 2 weeks, weather dependent. Work will be completed during the day from 7am – 5pm. Every effort will be made to minimise the impact on traffic however, delays of up to 10 minutes can be expected. There will be no disruptions to TransLink bus services. Chontia ‘Live In Concert’

Chontia is one of the most exceptionally gifted and exiting vocalist’s and song writers to emerge from Australia in recent years. Her extraordinary vocal capabilities are a natural wonder; angelic and sweet one moment, soulful and hugely powerful the next. She delivers her performance with pitch perfect precision and heartfelt emotion totally captivating audiences. Her beautiful and masterfully penned songs tell the story of

life, love and hope. Chontia has been likened to some of the world’s greats including Aretha Franklin, Adele, Eta James and Bonnie Raitt. Born in Queensland in 1981 to a musical family, Chontia started singing from a very early age. Her natural gift as an exceptionally talented young singer was obvious to all around right from the start. Aged just 8 she performed publicly for the very first time sewing the seed for a life in music. Pursuing

her dreams, she never let up and at age just 18 she was well on the way to establishing herself as a standout performer. She started working extensively at venues in Sydney and around the central coast/Hunter region of NSW as a solo artist, developing her skills and growing a loyal fan base. In 2013 she moved to the Sunshine Coast and formed her band. During the past few years she has gone from strength to strength performing

throughout Australia at major festivals and venues. In 2019 she will begin an international tour which will include Europe, South and North America. As well as performances and tours with her own band she has also appeared as the guest vocalist with leading international and Australian artists, including: Phil Emmanuel, Steve Edmonds, Barry Charles, Doc Span (USA) Louie Shelton (USA) and many more. Together with an ensemble of the finest musicians gracing the stage of The Majestic Theatre, Chontia “Live in Concert” is set to be one of the biggest and most exciting events of the year: Chontia and her band will take you on an exhilarating musical journey of emotions from beginning until end. Sunday 25th November 2018.Majestic Theatre Pomona.2pm start. “Don’t Miss The Concert of the Year!”

Singer, songwriter and string plucker, Craig Madden is set to hit the stage at Cooroy RSL with his bluesy original music.

With over twenty years of experience touring Australia, Craig’s voice and lyrics ring with truth, soul and experience. His pumping rhythmic guitar

style growls underneath, at times melodic and sweet, at others blue and intense! Craig is an old school honest showman who makes you feel that he is sitting next to you, as if he is with you at the bar or perhaps the audience is with him on stage. Earlier this year he released his new album, The Flood and it’s a great listen. But hearing him live is the real deal. Don’t take our word for it, you can catch his unique style at Cooroy RSL on Friday 9th November from 6pm. If you’d like to add a great dinner to this free show, then make sure to book a table on 5447 6131.

A first at Fringe Festival for Noosa High Graduate

Noosa District State High School 2012 graduate Tremayne won the Theatre, Circus and Dance Award for the Darwin Fringe Festival 2018 for a production of his short play, TRAIN LINES. TRAIN LINES explores young adults in the workforce and their feelings around employment. Mr Gordon said he was very excited and surprised to win the award. “I am really proud of the work that everyone has put into this production,” Mr Gordon said. Mr Gordon visited a Year 12 Social and Community Studies class at his old school last week to talk about life after school and he assisted the students with their assessment piece, which involves creating an art installation for the local community. The students enjoyed the interactive nature of Mr Gordon’s presentation and found his personal anecdotes and insights to be very helpful for demystifying the world outside of NDSHS. “When I was at school, I thought life was happening anywhere else, but on the Sunshine Coast. It’s not until you move away that you realise how lucky we have it here on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Gordon said. Mr Gordon completed a degree in Creative Industries at the University of the Sunshine Coast and his Honours at the Queensland University of Technology and is now enjoying working in the Arts industry, acting, writing and producing theatre, and most recently, taking part in the Darwin Fringe Festival 2018.

Cooran Acoustic Night The final Cooran Acoustic Night of 2018 will be held on Sat. 17th November, in the Cooran School of Arts Memorial Hall. Come and see why the Cooran Acoustic Night is still attracting the interest of onlookers and participants through its doors. Dreamed up over 28 years ago this wonderful event (which occurs around every six weeks) entices the amateur and professional, the young and old alike. The night also provides those visiting a great look into the world of the performer as they strut their stuff, showcasing handmade instruments, unique one-time acts and the always eclectic content. Entertainment you’ll not see the likes of anywhere else. Come and see what all the fuss is about at Cooran Hall, King St. Cooran. Entry $4; Kids free. Great small meals available. Tea/Coffee/Cakes. Facebook: Cooran Acoustic Night

The NDSHS students were advised by Mr Gordon to remember to treat life like a marathon, not a race. “I couldn’t wait to leave school and get out of here. I was constantly racing and I didn’t pace myself. Take time to appreciate the beauty of the Sunshine Coast and be grateful for your family,” Mr Gordon said. Mr Gordon told the students to use their art assessment piece to create a sense of citizenship within the local community. “Art can make us responsible and it forces us to think seriously about our behaviours and actions,” Mr Gordon said. The students were keen to hear about Mr Gordon’s theatrical production, TRAIN LINES, with many hoping to see it when it comes to Brisbane’s La Boite Theatre Company on 24th and 25th November, 2018 as part of the Festival of Australian Student Theatre 2018. “I would also really like to bring this production to the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Gordon said. The Year 12 class thoroughly enjoyed Mr Gordon’s presentation, with student Ambur Phillips impressed with Mr Gordon’s depth of knowledge and expertise in the Arts industry. “We’re really lucky to have a past student like him who is eager to come back to the school to share with us all that he has done since high school,” Miss Phillips said. The class wished Mr Gordon all the best with his upcoming shows.

This exhibition at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery is a collection of artworks put together by a group of women who have met to create, play and journal over the last 7 years. Earlier this year, one of the women read the poem, She Let Go, by Rev Safire Rose, as a prompt for an evening of journaling and creative expression. The poem resonated deeply

with the women present. When the possibility of having a group exhibition at our local gallery emerged, the group was unanimous that they wanted to use She Let Go as the source for the artworks which have been developed through the practice of art journaling and creative expression. Both of these practices engage the artist in a process of letting go, exploring ways of being and expressing themselves. The exhibition will show a wide range of styles and techniques. In addition, the artists’ journals will be on

display. The journals will give an insight into the progression of the artworks from the first inklings of an idea through its various stages to completion. Massage for immunity No, we don’t develop an immunity to massage, thank goodness, rather massage helps our immune system! And how might it do this? In a number of ways, and relaxation is definitely part of the reason. Massage boosts lymphocytes, which are the fighter cells that combat dis-ease in the body. Not only has it been shown to increase white blood cells post-body work, but it eases inflammation by reducing cytokines. Some level of inflammation is involved in nearly every disease state. Massage moves lymph. Lymph is a fluid in our body that contains the toxins from cells, and it only moves around through physical movement, there’s no pump for lymph. Stagnation of lymph leads to disease and burdens the immune system. Massage is one of the best things you can do to stimulate the drainage of lymph. This helps to detoxify the body of old blood cells, toxins and strengthens the immune system.

Massage alleviates stress, reduces anxiety and reduces cortisol. So this is where the relaxation comes into play. Stress lowers our immune response, make us move vulnerable to illness. Massage has even been shown to boost serotonin & dopamine, neurotransmitter aiding in well-being and feelings of awesome! “In studies in which cortisol was assayed either in saliva or in urine, significant decreases were noted in cortisol levels (averaging decreases 31%). In studies in which the activating neurotransmitters (serotonin and dopamine) were assayed in urine, an average increase of 28% was noted for serotonin and an average increase of 31% was noted for dopamine. These studies combined suggest the stress-alleviating effects (decreased cortisol) and the activating effects (increased serotonin and dopamine) of massage therapy on a variety of medical conditions and stressful experiences.” A few honourable mentions to the other perks

Chappy Etts’ choir from Cooroy State School entertained the elderly residents at ‘Share and Care’ in the CWA hall on Wednesday 24 October. The songs were from the war years such as ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy’ ‘Pack up your Troubles’ and many more. It was a trip down memory lane for those in the audience who joined in singing with the students.

Breathe easier this summer The sun is a-shining, the birds are a-singing … but you’re just not feelin’ it … we live such hectic lives, that we sometimes forget to look after ourselves. So you decide to improve your diet and exercise more but every time you try to get out and active, you struggle to breathe … you cough … you wheeze … maybe it’s also time to give up those cigarettes. People smoke because the nicotine in tobacco is very addictive! However, continual exposure to all of the other chemicals in the tobacco smoke can lead to many other serious health conditions. Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a good option to consider. Clinical trials show it may increase your chances of quitting by 50-70% compared to unassisted quitting – well worth a try. So why should I use NRT? What makes it any better than smoking a cigarette?!! And isn’t it better to just quit “cold turkey?” The main benefit of NRT is that it prevents cravings in a smoker whilst allowing them to abstain from tobacco; therefore … You will not be inhaling all of the poisonous gases and chemicals You will be using a product far less addictive than cigarettes You will be able to reduce your body’s daily intake of nicotine gradually Your withdrawal from nicotine will be reduced Quitting smoking is such a personal thing, so it is important for you to feel comfortable in how you go about this life-changing process. Three of the most common methods for quitting using NRT include: Stopping smoking abruptly and using 1 form of NRT to control cravings Stopping smoking abruptly and use a combination of 2 NRT products (patches plus gum, Page 18 - Cooroy Rag, November 7, 2018

spray or lozenges) to control cravings Stopping smoking gradually by using 1 form of NRT to help REDUCE the number of cigarettes smoked daily whilst preparing to quit Your LiveLife pharmacist can help to advise you on which method may work in your personal situation. But it’s important to think holistically about your lifestyle when choosing to give up cigarettes. You will need to support your body through this process, so remember: Try to fit in a moderate amount of exercise in your week (30 minutes per day) Eat regular healthy meals, making sure you include plenty of fruit, vegetables and grains Limit your alcohol intake - it is important not to replace your smoking with drinking! Join a support group to help enable you to overcome the emotional and psychological dependence Quitline is a telephone service available to smokers who want to quit. You can call Quitline on 137848 from anywhere in Australia for the cost of a local call (except for mobile phones—normal charges apply). Try to keep positive and motivated about quitting. You may attempt to quit a number of times before you stop for good, and that is ok. Try to think of previous attempts to quit as practise. Remember that your quitting success rate may improve by avoiding situations which tempt you to smoke If NRT is not working for you, please talk to your LiveLife pharmacist - they will ensure you are getting the most from your regimen and that it is the most appropriate one for YOU. They can also advise on other prescription/non-prescription methods for quitting. Get happy and HEALTHY this Summer – Life; let LiveLife Pharmacy help you LIVE it.

Healthy gut, healthy body

Suffering from bloating, pain, constipation, diarrhoea or reflux? Uncomfortable gut symptoms indicate an imbalance in your digestive system. Gut health can affect your whole body, with digestive imbalances related to allergy, autoimmunity and even cardiovascular disease. So don’t ignore your symptoms! Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. Your digestive system is highly efficient at breaking down food to obtain the nutrients it needs to nourish your body; in a similar way that food scraps in a compost bin break down into nutrient-rich compost to nourish your garden. However, to function optimally, care must be given to all key aspects of your digestive system - from the foods you eat, to how well they are digested, the health of your gut lining, and the beneficial bacteria in your gut (the gastrointestinal microbiome). If one aspect is out of balance, the whole system is put under pressure. Over time, this can lead to uncomfortable gut symptoms and compromise your overall health. Your body produces digestive enzymes to help break food into smaller particles, so they can be absorbed. If you are stressed, tend to eat on the run, or have a digestive disorder of some kind, you may not produce sufficient enzymes. This can lead to symptoms of bloating and fullness after meals due to slow or

www.cooroyrag.com.au

incomplete digestion. Supporting enzyme production can provide relief from these symptoms. Just as a well-sealed compost bin contains the compost until it is ready to nourish your garden; a healthy gut lining contains digested foods until their nutrients are ready to be absorbed. Providing a robust barrier, your gut lining also keeps harmful substances (e.g. waste products) within your digestive tract, allowing only beneficial nutrients to enter your bloodstream. If the integrity of your gut lining is weakened (known as ‘leaky gut’) due to stress, alcohol, poor diet, or a digestive disorder; this may allow incompletely digested food particles and/ or waste products to leak into your bloodstream. This is associated with symptoms including bloating and gas, but also fatigue, ‘brain fog’, allergy, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The good news is that certain herbs and nutrients can improve digestive enzyme function and help heal a leaky gut. Gentian and dandelion root are naturally bitter herbs that stimulate your body’s production of enzymes to strengthen your overall digestive capacity. Glutamine is a component of protein that improves the integrity of your gut lining, therefore can help reduce gut symptoms. Zinc and vitamin A are nutrients essential for keeping the cells in your gut lining tightly packed together, reducing the gaps that result in a ‘leaky’ gut. You can also implement some good habits to improve your gut health; 1) ensure you have enough fibre to promote beneficial gut bacteria and overall digestive health, 2) reduce your intake of alcohol and processed, sugary foods which can harm your gut lining, 3) focus on stress management - stress reduces digestive enzyme production and increases leaky gut, and 4) eat slowly, chew thoroughly, and don’t eat on

the run. In summary supporting enzyme production and improving the integrity of your gut lining will enable you to break down food better and improve your gut symptoms - helping you feel healthier and more energetic. If you are struggling with uncomfortable gut symptoms, contact Jodie for a tailored treatment plan to address the key aspects of digestion, so you can feel your best! Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in a wide range of health conditions. You’ve got all the mod cons, too, with a ceramic cook top, built-in oven and dishwasher.

There’s plenty of room for family and friends with 4 bedrooms, main bathroom and an ensuited master bedroom with a floating timber floor and French doors to the garden. You’ll love the views of majestic Mt Cooroora from the open plan living area, the formal lounge and one of the bedrooms. This lovely home sits on 6.57 acres so you’ll never feel crowded. The land is selectively cleared with neat lawns and easy-care garden beds around the house. An added bonus is the very neat 3-bay shed with 2 roller doors plus an air-conditioned studio with glass sliding door. There’s plenty of water here, including a dam with a pump, and the property is protected by a full termite barrier. Located inland from Cooroy and Pomona, Black Mountain is a gorgeous spot to call home, offering some of the best views in the region. Just 28km from Noosa Heads, it’s home to several artists’ studios and boutique rural enterprises. There’s also easy access to Brisbane via the new Bruce Highway extension and less 5 minutes to the friendly village shops of Pomona. DUAL LIVING ECO HOME + STUDIO ON 2.5 ACRES

Bed 3; Bath 1; Car 6; 44 acres AUCTION ONSITE Sunday November 25, 10am This stunning 44-acre property, just a minute’s drive from Cooran Village and boasting gorgeous mountain views, goes to auction onsite at 10am on Sunday, 25 November 2018. Located at the end of a long driveway, you’ll feel as if you’re a million miles from anywhere, yet shops, cafes, primary school, sports oval and even a train station are just a short drive away. And the school bus stops at your gate! This spacious 3-bedroom home is ready to move into, but it’s also packed with potential should you wish to take it to the next level. The spacious open plan living area is filled with natural light and the modern kitchen features a dishwasher, breakfast bar and loads of storage. There’s a fireplace to keep you warm on chilly winter evenings and an air-conditioner to stay cool in summer. And there’s more; adjoining the home via a breezeway is a separate granny flat or master suite, with plumbing already in place for your private ensuite bathroom. The current owners’ renovation plans were halted when work demanded a move

to foreign shores, and that’s a bonus for you! The great features of this lovely property continue outside, where you’ll find a huge 3-bay American barn, open-sided farm shed, a single garage and a stable, with external and internal fencing on the property. The 44-acre (17.8ha) block is gently sloping, with pony paddocks, a dam and permanent creek frontage extending for approximately 1km. This property also comes with a secure future income. Approximately 6-hectares of the land has been used for a hardwood plantation, comprising Gympie Messmate and Brushbox. There’s still plenty of room for horses or cattle, and there’s also an above-ground concrete swimming pool, which just needs a little TLC. Offering secluded living, just a minute’s drive from Cooran, 15 minutes from Cooroy and 30 minutes from Noosa’s world-famous beach, this is a wonderful opportunity which needs to snapped up fast! Contact Sam Hargrave on 0425 777 121 or Phil Hargrave on 0417 750 507. Note: The property has a Joint Venture with the Department of Primary Industries for cabinet timber (tree farm).

Back at the gorgeous John Blanck Oval, day 2 of 3A’s clash against Maroochydore resumed with the hosts on 1 for 28 chasing Cooroy’s first innings total of 145. Some strong batting from Maroochydore’s skipper Matt Preston built pressure, but the game turned following 2 brilliant catches from Mark Young. From a healthy 3 for 66, Maroochydore capitualted under intense pressure from the Cooroy bowlers to 112 all out off 40 overs. The standout, was spinner Peter Clark, who returned exceptional figures of 6 for 37 off 10 overs. In their 2nd innings, solid batting from Cooroy-Eumundi saw them through to the close at 5 for 131, with Phil Anderson not out on 61. This was a real team effort and a credible win away from home. 5th grade were at home to Coolum in their 4th round clash. Batting first, Cooroy-Eumundi hit a respectable 146 with junior Brayden Forrest 35 not out and Darcy Crawford-Rickards a solid 28. Unfortunately, some excellent Coolum batting saw them home in the 27th over, despite brilliant catches from by Jonah Hope-Hodgetts and Zac Price. Darcy also chipped in with the ball, returning figures of 3 for 18. The boys travel to Glasshouse in the next round eager for a win. Day 2 for the U15’s commenced with CooroyEumundi in the field bowling to Maroochydore at 1 for 8, chasing 243. Another quick wicket put Maroochydore at 2-26, but their 3rd wicket partnership lasted a total of 114 runs, getting them back on target. Sharp hands from Zac Price (3 catches) and admirable bowling from Martin Kelly

(2/20) and Kai Badger (2/2) turned the game around, and the Maroochydore innings was finished off at 9-188, with Cooroy-Eumundi winning by a respectable 55 runs. The U13’s were at home to Grammar, and winning the toss decided to field first. Gus Gunton rattled the Grammar batting attack with a superb catch in slips, and Max Woods destroyed the middle order with two wickets off two balls. Under intense fielding pressure Grammar were all out for 86 runs. Against a spirited attack, solid batting saw Cooroy home with overs to spare. A tough day at the office saw U12 Green’s go down fighting at Coolum. Some superb Coolum batting took them to a healthy 2 for 133 off their 30 overs. Steven Galea battled hard for Cooroy, returning figures of 1 for 13. In reply, despite resilient defence form Zac Harrison (17) and Clancy Young (15), Cooroy couldn’t keep out the straight ones and were rolled for 63. U12 White away at Palmwoods batted first, with opener Angus Hetherington (40) once again starring with the bat. Supported by Jaxon Smith (24no) and Josh Plant (14no), the boys reached a respectable 6 for 137. Their run chase got off to a difficult start with Reilly Carroll taking 2 for 2 in the first over, helping reduce Palmwoods to 5 for 16 at one point. Spin-king Sandy Bath kept the pressure on, returning figures of 1 for 10 off his 5 overs, and despite some determined batting, Palmwoods were 7 for 91 at the close. Cooroy-Eumundi White notching up their 3rd convincing win of the season by 46 runs. Well done to all the Cougar Teams!

Myall St, Cooroy 5447 6258 • LAND CLEARING • FIRE ACCESS TRACKS • FENCE LINES • LANTANA INFESTATIONS • TREES & RE-GROWTH • STUMP GRINDING On Thursday 25 October, Cooroy Golf Club held their Invitation Day in conjunction with their fundraiser for Tee Off for Breast Cancer Research. Although our numbers were not great, the competition was fierce, with players purchasing so many Get out of Trouble stickers that they could not use them all. Combined with the Sunset Cruise donated by Gary and Kym from Noosa River and Canal Cruises, we managed to raise over one thousand dollars for the cause. Winners on the day were Judy Kitcher and Rosemary Caffyn (with an amazing 60 score) who were presented with Cruise tickets while Di Chard and Carmel Clark won vouchers from Wildflower Fashion as runners-up with 56 points on a countback. Many thanks to the sponsors and to all those involved in organising the day, helping out, donating items for the raffle and bringing morning tea.

CUFC goes global After our pre-season working bee with the help of our volunteers CUFC were able to clear out a lot of older playing strips that were not being utilised. Fortunately, one of our members, Asi Pako, was able to take some of these kits with her to her village in PNG where they were distributed amongst the locals and used for their village volleyball competition. The locals were very appreciative and Asi would like to thank CUFC and particularly the volunteers who worked on clearing the jerseys out for the donation. This is a great example of how volunteering a few hours within our small club can benefit our community and further!!
