Not my fave

US girls in the office are joining in the fundraiser ‘Mo for Movember’. Ever since our office tweezers went missing, it’s been game on. It got a bit scary there for a while, especially when the morning sun was shining through the windows, as any one of us could be randomly attacked by a colleague brandishing the metal apparatus, crying “just let me get this curly one”. It’s good to have honest friends, though not too many of them (that’s just asking for therapy) but one or two keeps us real and depilitated. But as nasty as the tweezer phase got, it was lot better than the deafening silence that greeted me when I returned to my desk last week after having my first professional spray tan. Unfortunately the gals weren’t the only ones who saw that before I got to have my after spray shower (highly recommended) as I found myself in every hospital and doctor waiting room until late into the night. Like Hansel and Gretel I left a trail behind me, not of breadcrumbs, but of stained furnishings. Occasionally, during the long waits to see doctors, I’d slip into the bathroom, carefully avoiding the white walls, and catch a glimpse of what I was morphing into. I was looking more and more like an orangutan as the minutes ticked by. Couple that with the missing tweezers and there you have it ... Mo’s, morphing and medical emergencies … looking like the Missing Link not my fave! Next edition: November 30 Booking deadline: November 17 Copy deadline: November 21

Getting old? Take your time! Would you like to live to the age of one hundred and fifty, About double your average lifetime now? The scientists declare they’ll soon have the recipe, Although they haven’t explained properly, exactly when and how.

summer at Peter's is airconditioned Open 7 days

It may sound fine at the moment, but I have some serious doubts, And I don’t personally want to live on earth that long. Our lives will have to make serious changes, And what we do now with our time, may suddenly look all wrong. Imagine the bureaucrat world, with all that time to waste, Gone would be any sense of urgency, procrastination would be the go. Governments could be in power for thirty years or more, And those ageing politicians, how their lovely supers would grow!! Airline captains still flying, at an age of one hundred and twenty, And those cute little airline hosties, still aloft at a ripe old age. Men would go to a strip show, to watch ninety year old pole dancers, And Lady Gaga turning a hundred, and still prancing around on stage!! People wouldn’t be married, until well into their forties, And after ninety years of marriage, perhaps you’d be divorced. Women would be pregnant for eighteen months or more, Although I guess by then, the pregnancy could be outsourced!!

“Senior moments” would probably stretch, into bothersome “senior hours”, And two Golden Weddings, would no doubt be seen as normal. And girls at the maturing age, of nearly thirty eight, Would drive their mothers crazy, preparing for the High School Formal. At golf you’d still be classed a junior, until the age of forty six, And all those sporting icons, who the crowds have long admired. Would be at their peak, and playing well, in their middle sixties, And when they reach their eighties, think it’s time that they retired. The possibilities are endless, my brain can barely cope, The future looks really daunting, and seems lacking any surety. I would prefer to the familiar, the Biblical three score years and ten, The boredom of this bold new age, would be a high price for maturity.

GIFT VOUCHERS

SOUND too good to be true? So what can deliver all of these things – being a Christmas in Cooroy Santa’s Helper of course! It takes about 100 people to run this free family event that attracts thousands of people each year! So, please consider helping out Christmas in Cooroy this year! As a community event it is fun and there are lots of volunteer roles that are really enjoyable and different such as wearing a costume or co-ordinating the street parade. Actually everything is enjoyable at Christmas in Cooroy and the people you work with are great for a laugh and a bit of fun too. It is really rewarding – if you don’t get a warm fuzzy feeling from the delight on the faces of young and old then you must be the Christmas Grinch (but don’t worry there is even a costume for that if that’s a role you’d like to play). Being a part of the Christmas in Cooroy volunteer team gives such a sense of achievement that you’ll be asking yourself why you didn’t do it earlier. There are all sorts of roles for volunteers from helping with decorations or assisting with the parade to selling raffle tickets or wearing a costume. People are needed for 26 November to assist with putting up the decorations around town, on 2 & 3 December for a whole host of tasks and on 7 January to pack away the decorations. You can volunteer for an hour or two or for a whole day – you’ll be appreciated regardless of your contribution and you’ll even get a fantastic shirt sponsored by Greenwood Grove Cooroy as a reward. The picturesque PEET’s Greenwood Grove estate in Cooroy is a new supporter of Christmas in Cooroy this year and their sponsorship reflects the integral role of the volunteer in this important community celebration. To register go to the website www.christmasincooroy.com.au or contact Danielle Taylor on 0403 023 802 or email advertising@ cooroy.com.au.

Remembrance Day Service A MEMORIAL Remembrance Day Service will be held at the RSL Memorial Park commencing !0-30 AM on 11/ 11/2011. Veterans and families, and members of the community are invited to attend. This service will be supported by the Noosa District State High School Band and Student participation will be a feature of the programme. The Cooroy RSL Sub-branch will be handing out poppies to all the children in the district on the day. The red ‘corn poppy’ takes its name from the way it flourished in grain fields. During the Flanders fighting, shells and shrapnel broke up the hard soil, exposing hundreds of dormant poppy seeds to the sunlight they needed for gerimination. Legend has it that white poppies originally grew in Flanders field, but became red due to the blood of the soldiers as it soaked into the ground.

Adopt a Digger

Cooroy digger Harry Fry. Harry was 43 when he enlisted into the 5th Light Horse Regiment

ON Remembrance Day last year local historian Chrissy Fletcher launched her community project, the website Adopt a Digger® and Chrissy invites all local Cooroy residents to adopt a WW1 digger or nurse from our district. In 2015 Australia will commemorate the Anzac Centenary and the project’s aim is to create a database of the military history of all diggers with connections to the Sunshine Coast region and to have it finalised by the date of the Centenary. The criteria for a digger’s inclusion is that they were born, lived in or had next of kin in our district. Chrissy is aware that the older members of our community are the last to have living memory of these diggers, and we need to capture their stories and first-hand knowledge before it is lost forever. When people adopt a digger by following prompts on the website, they

conduct research on the digger’s military information which is all freely available online. The website clearly explains how to do this and the data is then uploaded directly to the site by the researcher. Chrissy runs regular free “how to research” workshops and urges the community to get behind this voluntary project. Cooroy has links with 58 WW1 diggers, 13 of whom have been adopted, but Chrissy is finding more all the time. Recently, she discovered a further 8 diggers who served in the Light Horse Regiment who had not been documented. We don’t want these boys to be forgotten, we want them all to be remembered in a meaningful way. You can participate in this worthwhile remembrance project and help to commemorate the sacrifice and service of “our boys”. Chrissy also posts regular news articles and research tips on www.adoptadigger.org.

Huge prize pool at the Cooroy Great Santa Race A PRIZE pool of $1,400 is sure to see a huge field of entrants in the Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race on Saturday 3 December. The challenge is simple - make the short dash up Maple Street in Cooroy dressed in a santa suit! First prize is $500, second is $250 and third is $150 but the beauty is that you don’t even have to place to be a winner as there are also five random draws of $100! And if the prize pool isn’t enough enticement, the event will also be raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation providing even more incentive to get your running shoes on. “This is the third year that we have run the Great Santa Race and it is a really unique way to kick off the Christmas in Cooroy celebrations. We’ve had around 50 Santas in the last couple of years but this year we want to double it with 100 Santas streaking their way up Maple Street. There are also thousands of people in the crowd cheering them on so it is all quite exciting. We are hoping to reach the 100 target this year and that will mean even more funds for the Leukaemia Foundation,” said Danielle Taylor, Event Manager. The Great Santa Race will start at Apex Park in Cooroy at 4.30pm on Saturday 3rd December. Entry to the Great Santa Race

is only $10 and all entrants receive a free Santa suit to race in. Participants must be 18 years and over and entries can be obtained online at www.christmasincooroy.com.au. Ensure you enter early to secure a spot at the starting line. The Great Santa Race is a component of Christmas in Cooroy which is a fantastic free community event with free rides and entertainment for the entire family. Hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Cooroy this event is a showcase of Christmas spirit for the region. The race will precede the popular Bendigo Bank Street Parade which then leads into other festivities such as music and fireworks in Apex Park. The event could not be run without the fantastic support from all its volunteers and funding partners: Sunshine Coast Council, Arts Queensland, Festivals Australia, Bendigo Community Bank, Ri-con Contractors, Cooroy Rag, Luke’s Supa IGA Cooroy, Cooroy Hotel, The Plantation B & B, Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group, Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy, Greenwood Grove Cooroy, Zinc 96.1 FM, Ritek Building Solutions, Qld Media Print, Bone Lawyers, Hinterland Christian Centre, Sun-

Robert C. Hilditch D.C.

AFTER 32 years of working as a doctor in Cooroy, Dr David Kirkman has recently sold the management rights of the Maple Street Surgery. He felt the corporate governance involved in running a medical practice was becoming too onerous for someone trained in medicine so he can now concentrate 100% on being just that, a family doctor. He has handed over the reins to a couple experienced in running medical centres, Kathryn Davis and Bill Brown. Dr Kirkman said he has had a wonderful 32 years with many fond memories and colourful incidents having occurred over that time. He was quite a sight back in 1979 when he first arrived in Cooroy with afro hairdo and diamond in his ear, which was not the stereotype GP in 1979. He initially joined the practice of Dr Roy and

Dr David Kirkman (centre) pictured with Bill Brown and Kathryn Davis Marceline Luck and then branched out on his own in 1984 creating the Maple Street Surgery. He had a special interest in obstetrics and gained a reputation for conducting “natural” deliveries. He gave mothers the freedom of choice as to their preferred method of delivery rather than being flat on their back in the conventional “stranded beetle” position. He encouraged gravity assisted deliveries and was open

minded about water births in the Cooroy Hospital, which at the time was considered quite radical but has since become accepted as the norm 30 years later. Even though educated at a conventional medical school in WA, he respected the beliefs of people with alternative philosophies and acted to bridge the gap between conventional medicine and alternative therapies. Dr Kirkman encouraged expectant

mothers to avoid delivering children at home but rather in the safety of the hospital but at the same time allowing them to make their own choices. He still recalls one delivery where there were four generations of the mother’s family in the delivery room at the one time, together with her husband and her boyfriend, all under candle light with whale noises on a tape cassette playing as background music. He recalls Matron Leap - the director of nursing at the time throwing her hands up in the air claiming “now I’ve seen everything!” David has always been supported by his beautiful wife Jan who has not only worked as receptionist/registered nurse and practice manager, but also raised three delightful children. David has always considered Jan as the “heart” of the surgery with her ability to put

sick people at ease with her caring nature, and her creation of a “boutique” surgery with the regular supply of her home grown roses. They both have fond memories of the wonderful people they have had contact with over the years in the beautiful township of Cooroy, and now with Kath and Bill at the helm can concentrate 100 per cent on continuing to providing good patient care, along with their colleagues at Maple Street Surgery. Maple street surgery already bulk bill over 85% of our patients and have always bulk billed health cardholders, pensioners, concession cardholders, students and children under 16. Helping those who need it most, we are now expanding our bulk billing to all families that have fallen on hard times or been affected by the local business uncertainties. The surgery’s long held policy of helping those in need within our community, on the same day if at all possible, is a core value that will always be retained by the practice and all within it.

EST. 1988 MEET Majestic, Rudolph, Valentino and Buster, born in the front row of the gallery in Pomona’s Majestic Theatre during a school concert on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, offspring of a Shitzu/ Maltese mother and Cavalier King Charles dad. Said proud owner Janene Maxwell -Jones: “I don’t normally take my dog with me, but she was heavily pregnant and due any time. She also wouldn’t let me out of her sight. As there was no-one left to look after her at home and I didn’t want to miss my son’s performance, I took her with me, certainly not expecting she would have her puppies there.” The Majestic does not encourage canine audiences, but the staff couldn’t get too indignant about these new arrivals, born in the beam of a warming spotlight and taken home in a carton from the theatre store-room.

Mitch Cave with Jason Scnellaars SENIOR students, Aidler Hoffman, year 12, and Hussayni, year 11, each were awarded The Aerospace Gateway Schools Spirit of Aviation Award at the Celebration of Excellence evening on Wednesday night. It is the first year for the award to be offered to a year 12 student at Noosa High and is testament to the growing strength of the relatively new course. Last year, Noosa High purchased a fixed wing flight simulator and a rotary wing (helicopter) simulator as part of the Aviation and Aerospace Studies offered at the school since 2009. It was part of a move to allow the students to put their theory into practice. Recently, in September, students were very fortunate in gaining the enthusiasm and expertise of Captain Fergus Ponder and Captain Jason Scnellaars who ran an introductory class for the Year 12 Aviation students and offered instruction on how to fly the simulators. Mr Ponder is head of flight training at Becker’s and Mr Scnellaars is currently flying in the islands north of Papua New Guinea. Becker Helicopters, who operate from the Sunshine Coast Airport, gave freely their time and experience to enhance the benefits of students having access to the flight simulators. Mr Ponder indicated that Becker Helicopters are keen to foster and develop interest in Aviation and that they were happy to partner the school by offering their continued support for the course and its students.

TO improve your cash flow, you need the period between paying your expenses and getting paid by your debtors to be as short as possible. When you set up a new account, make sure you and your client both agree to the credit terms. This may include discounts for early payment, or interest charged for late payments. Once these terms are in place, monitor them by communicating with your client so they are always clearly informed of when they are expected to pay and also how late payments will be handled. For example, a threestep process may involve a phone call at two weeks late, a letter of demand at one month, and referral to a collection agency at two months. If an existing customer is stretching out your terms, you need to change their behaviour. A lot of owners

are scared to request prompt payment because they feel they will lose business by being too demanding, but by not doing this, you have actually become part of the problem. You need to assume a more assertive attitude, because once you’ve provided goods and/or services, you’re working for free until your customer pays you. However changing behaviour requires a gradual approach. Remember you’re the one who has let them creep out to these longer terms. So, you have to work with them to make changes; you can’t just pull a stick out and start beating them with it. Call them more frequently, and sooner than you usually would. For example, if someone is paying you regularly at 90 days, start calling them at 30 days and say ‘The invoice is due, can you please advise when it’ll be paid?’ You don’t want to lose your client by changing your

credit terms dramatically, but do explain to them that you need to be paid on time. If there have been exceptional circumstances that prevent your client from paying on time, find out if what they’re saying is plausible. If they can’t afford to pay the entire amount, develop a payment schedule and be clear on the consequences if the instalment terms are not met. If you have any questions about your business banking, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings@bendigo bank.com.au.

Wellington’s Way With Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington

HONOUR our servicemen: In Parliament we the independents were able to convince the government that our Parliament should honour all fallen defence servicemen and women with a minute’s silence. I was able to contact Cooroy, Nambour and Palmwoods RSL representatives during debate on this issue, and all of our local Sub-branches honour our serving and retired servicemen and women on a daily basis. We were all very pleased when the government agreed to change the way Parliament operates. In the future, whenever an Australian defence person is killed in action, a minutes silence will be held at the next sitting of Parliament as a sign of respect for our Australian heroes. Clearing up an identification issue: In Parliament I introduced my Identification Law Amendment Bill which,

if adopted will require a person to remove face covering so that they can be identified. I introduced this Bill because of public outcry when a New South Wales woman refused to remove her Burqa and prove her identity when required to by a Police Officer. This identification issue goes beyond religious beliefs and comes down to respect for our laws. You cannot prove who you are if your face is covered, and my Bill includes all facial covering including helmets, burqas and other face covers, and is restricted to the face. In my first reading speech I told Parliament that my Bill is needed to protect both our police officers and the public. Scam warnings: A recent investigation for a constituent who had inadvertently purchased products she did not agree to buy has revealed that some

unscrupulous telemarketers are not following the rules of offering a cooling off period to would-be customers. I urge people who are approached by phone or internet telemarketers or doorto-door salesmen to look into the companies offering the service or product before agreeing to anything or saying “yes” to any proposed deals. Useful websites to check out marketing groups are: www.scamwatch.gov.au and www.hoaxslayer.com, or contact your local Fair Trading Office. Meet me in Cooroy: I will be holding my next Cooroy meeting in the Cooroy RSL boardroom on Thursday, November 24. Anyone who would like to meet with me can organise an appointment by contacting my office on 5441 6933.

The original church, now used as the hall IN January 2012, the Cooroy Uniting Church, formerly the Methodist Church, will celebrate its’ centenary. The original church building is still on the site and is used as the church hall. Plans are underway to mark this important occasion with a special church service on Sunday 29th January 2012. Many people have had an association with the church, either through the weekly services or the various youth and adult groups which have existed over the years. This will be an opportunity for people to meet old friends and recall times past. THE NoosaCare Inc Board, Management, Staff, Residents and Volunteers bid a sad farewell to a great man and a friend to Kabara. Don Milligan held the position of Chairman of the Kabara Board for many years. Don’s commitment and passion for Kabara Aged Care Facility, Cooroy was evident, when he was faced with the difficult task of securing its long term financial viability by merging with another aged care organization. Don took the leap of faith and formed a relationship with Carramar. In 2006 both organizations merged to become “NoosaCare Inc”, Carramar and Kabara Sites. Don’s vision for Kabara was always “big” just like the man himself. Don instigated the construction of a new 32 bed facility, architecturally designing a modern building blending into the local community landscape. Don remained on the board right up until he decided to step back due to health issues but still kept his eye on Kabara via regular phone calls to management. Don’s health took a turn for the worse, and in 2010, Don moved into his beloved Kabara. It was a great honour for all staff members to provide care and friendship to Don right up until the day he passed away. A fitting end to a great man with a big heart…. Farewell William Donald Milligan you will be missed.

news Local celebrant recognised in Queensland Regional Awards

COOROY RAG

LOCAL Marriage Celebrant and Author, Celeste Frances Scott has been voted amongst the top 10 in Queensland in this year’s Queensland Regional Achievement and Community Awards in the Category of Regional Service Awards. The Regional Service Award applauds unsung heroes, and acknowledges those people who are passionate in dedicating their lives or professions to pursue their passion from a community based level. Awards Australia was established in 1989 in Western Australia and has expanded throughout Australia through the development of the Young Achiever Awards, Young Australian of the Year and other programs. The ever popular Hinterland town of Cooroy is where Celeste calls home, and it is from here she has established herself as one of the most in demand Marriage Celebrants on the Sunshine Coast and indeed Queensland because of the unique and original penmanship of her wedding cer-

emonies. “To play such a pivotal role in a couples life on the day of their wedding to accurately relay and portray their love story, is something I do not take for granted”, says Celeste. “It is an honour, but more so is the belief I have that comes from representing the town I live in and the greater area of the Noosa Region and the Sunshine Coast. To have been nominated for this award is a great privilege. ” In the past 7 years since Celeste became a Celebrant and published Author of The Ten Second Kiss, she has officiated over 600 ceremonies and in that time has proudly sung the praises of what this region has to offer couples who choose to marry here and bring their invited friends and family to this area. “I think the wedding dollar generated in this region on a weekly basis is greatly under estimated. The direct flow through effect it has for not only those in the wedding related industries, but also for the restaurants, cafes, accommodation houses, tourist facilities, hair and beauty salons and retailers cannot be undervalued. Each gain greatly and directly over those few days a couple chose to hold their wedding here and bring their guests to the Coast”, says Celeste. “I have the opportunity to work with many service providers state wide but I only ever align myself with the best of best when it comes to the suppliers I choose to work with”, says Celeste. “I believe in promoting local suppliers to my clients such as Trudy Croud of Lovebird Weddings who has captured the niche market for the boutique bespoke wedding, and award winning photographer Yanni Van Zijl of Yanni Photography. These are just two of the many women I love to work with as their businesses and passions parallel my own

in wanting to ensure the couples who put that most important day of their lives in our hands, will only ever feel as if they are our most important and valued client.” As Celeste further explained, “In most cases when a couple come to meet me for that initial meeting to discuss their wedding plans, I always choose one of my favourite cafes or restaurants here in Cooroy such as Jamaica Blue, Maison de Providence or even our very own Cooroy RSL as that meeting place. Often it is the first time the couple have come to Cooroy and instantly they fall in love with this town, often returning at a later date with friends and family to indulge in that wonderful wholesome community spirit we pride ourselves on. More often than not the couple are often congratulated on their forth coming wedding when they arrive by the waitresses or restaurant staff even before I have even opened my mouth as it has become common knowledge now that if I have has reserved a table there is usually at least one nervous groom and one excited bride about to join me.” The aim and objective of Awards Australia is to seek out and encourage, highlight and promote positive role models to inspire other Australians with the high selection criteria from individuals, businesses and communities who are performing remarkable achievements and give them the opportunity to be recognised for these achievements, whilst projecting a positive image to all Australians. This award is an opportunity for our whole community to gain inspiration from others through their achievements, demonstrated leadership and outstanding service to the local community. The winners of each category will be announced on the Gold Coast at the Gala Awards Presentation Dinner this month.

COOROY-based Ausmar Homes celebrated taking out the prestigious Professional Small Builder of the Year award for the fifth year in a row at last night’s HIA Queensland Awards held at Brisbane Convention Centre. The award sees the local builder one step closer to taking home the national award for the third consecutive year in May 2012. Ausmar Director, Tony Bryan, said it was encouraging to be recognised by the HIA particularly at a time when tough economic conditions are taking their toll on the industry. “Times are certainly tough in the building industry and we believe it is our ongoing commitment to quality,

exceptional customer service and delivering value for money that has helped us not only maintain but increase our market share in these difficult times,” said Mr Bryan. “We are very proud of this award and I’d like to thank everyone in the Ausmar team for their contribution. We have a great crew who share our passion for building quality homes for the Sunshine Coast community.” The awards, which aim to promote quality and professionalism in the housing industry, review four areas of the business, namely customer service, leadership in the business, business management and financial management.

History a winner for Alice FOR the second year in a row, a Noosa High student has won the prestigious state- wide History essay competition run by the Queensland History Teacher’s Association. Year 12 student, Alice Liddell, who won the Indigenous Topic Category, researched and wrote an essay about the contribution of Indigenous Australian service men and women in major military engagements in modern history. In her research, she learned of the prejudice and injustice that many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experienced while fighting for their country. Alice proposed a thesis that demonstrated how these people have not always been recognised or acknowledged, but that this is changing. On Year 12 parade, Acting Principal Barry Dittman presented Alice with a certificate and a cheque for $100 from the Queensland History Teachers’ Association. Mr Dittman, Alice and Ms Martin

news Neilsen’s answer questions on quarry

COOROY RAG

YOU will be aware that a lot has been said in the community, the media and social media sites regarding the Neilsen Group’s Kin Kin Quarry site at Shepperson Lane, Kin Kin. After a lengthy and comprehensive court case earlier this year during which time Neilsens, as operators of the quarry, could not make public comments or refute any of the claims made against them, we would now like to provide some facts regarding the site and the operators. I would also like to assure you that as one of the remaining family companies involved in Quarry operations in South East Queensland we are committed to maintaining the highest possible standards in the Kin Kin community and on the Sunshine Coast. Why does the Sunshine Coast need another quarry? Despite the Sunshine Coast’s mountainous terrain, geological, environmental and other land use constraints have led to a shortage of the quality asphalt materials needed to meet future roadbuilding demands. Another regional source is necessary to avoid reliance on costly and inefficient alternatives. The Kin Kin Quarry is a relatively small, boutique operation which will service the local area (approximately within a 50km radius around the site) with quality blue rock for the civil, construction, building and domestic markets. There will also be significant economic benefits for the town of Kin Kin and surrounding areas, with up to a dozen people employed directly at the site and indirect benefits for more than twice that number which will result from flow on effects stimulated by the operation. Why Kin Kin? The Kin Kin site is home to a large resource of Andesite, an excellent quality volcanic rock. Unlike many volcanic rocks common to the Sunshine Coast, the Andesite at Kin Kin possesses the characteristics that make it highly suitable for applications such as road surfacing. For this reason, the Kin Kin site has been labelled a Key Resource Area by the State Government, and a separation area has been established around the quarry to protect the surrounding community from the impacts of noise, dust, ground vibration and air blast overpressure that can occur during extraction. The increased competition the quarry will bring will also make roadbuilding more affordable for Local Government, leading to an increase in quality roads for the region. Quarries can only be positioned where the actual resource is located. The quarry is located in a valley, which acts as a natural amphitheatre and helps reduce noise; The sides of the valley, surrounding bushland and the distance of the quarry from main roads conceal the site from passing traffic; There are few neighbours and only a few residential properties within a radius of several kilometres. The Neilsen Group takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously and aims to minimise impacts as much as possible on the

surrounding habitat. At the Kin Kin site, all materials, including overburden and any clay and silt materials recovered from the water treatment system, will be used in the manufacture of quarry products or used for onsite works. Plant and equipment selection and placement within the site will also be driven by the need to minimise energy requirements and emissions. The Kin Kin Quarry has a cutting-edge, multi-stage water treatment solution to ensure any clay or silt settles out before stormwater is discharged offsite. The solution comprises a primary dam, for initial removal of coarser sediments, and a much smaller secondary dam, where an environmentally friendly coagulant is mixed with the water to accelerate the settling of very fine clay and silt particles. The process results in clean water which can be discharged safely if needed. The primary dam will have a capacity of approximately 28,000 cubic metres, and has been designed to provide around 130 percent of the recommended stormwater storage capacity required for the site. The Department of Energy and Resource Management (DERM) has stringent regulations regarding noise and ground vibration Recent blast monitoring results have shown noise levels falling well below DERM requirements. Once the site becomes fully operational, a blast will only occur once every few weeks on average and each blast will last less than a second. Neighbours will be notified of a planned blast, although the natural amphitheatre the quarry’s location provides will confine much of the noise within the quarry site. Both the bottom-up and top-down methods of extraction require the same compliance with stringent DERM and Sunshine Coast Council environmental regulations and the choice of extraction process is based on environmental and operational efficiencies. For the Kin Kin Quarry, the bottom-up extraction method has these advantages compared to the top-down alternative: It caters for smaller total operational areas and therefore less disturbance to the area overall; It will provide for a large, flat, hard stand area at the entrance to the site. This is necessary due to the increased size of the dam. The Neilsen Group is very pleased to learn of the State Government’s recent $3 million commitment to upgrade the Kin Kin-Pomona Road. The Neilsen Group CEO Mario Panuccio has lobbied extensively for the upgrade to both Local and State Government representatives and the company has generously offered to supply the quarry materials needed to complete the project at cost price. The Neilsen Group is committed to ensuring the safety of both its employees and other users of roads to and from the quarry and will continue to work with government and community decision-makers to effect necessary improvements. COOROY RAG EXTERRA termite management systems, Cooroy Pest Control and Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) have an innovative new partnership which will help save some of Australia’s most endangered species. Northern Australia is considered one of the last great intact wild places on the planet, alongside the Amazon, Antarctica and the Boreal Conifer Forests of Alaska. Australia has the highest number of endemic mammal and reptile species in the world, but also the worst rate of species extinction! Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is an independent, non-profit organisation dedicated to turning back this tide of extinctions. AWC’s strategy is to acquire land which contains vital habitat for endangered species and to then actively manage these properties to ensure the survival and re-

covery of threatened species and habitats. Exterra and Cooroy Pest Control will jointly contribute funds from each Exterra instalment to AWC - and each instalment will help AWC to secure 10 hectares (22 acres) of threatened wilderness in northern Australia. Cooroy Pest Control is a family owned business and is committed to working towards being environmentally responsible. Most of their fleet has been converted to diesel & they actively promote Exterra termite baiting & monitoring system to the Noosa Biosphere area. This system is non toxic to you, your family, your pets & the environment. If you would like more information on pest control or termite treatments, please call Cooroy Pest Control on 5472 0141 or email us on info@cooroypestcontrol.com.

Libraries are for babies too! COOROY Library hosts an amazing array of events for all of us, and that includes the youngest of all - our babies. The smallest, freshest minds and bodies rock and roll and get ready for learning on a weekly basis. Sunshine Coast Council works closely with health professionals and local businesses dedicated to early childhood to deliver high quality activities. Babies can begin their library life by meeting with the child health nurse any Thursday from 9-1. Noosa Community Health provides this popular outreach service for local parents who find it hard to travel far from home. “Parenting New Babies” is an informative 6 week course, also run in the Library on a regular basis. Organised and facilitated by Noosa Community Health, the course helps parents gain support, information and friendship in a supportive environment. Library staff offer a ‘Babes in Arms’ pro-

gram, that teaches baby and parent the gentle art of language through rhymes, songs and lullabies. Verna Hewitt, from early childhood educator “Kindermusik” offers a free session to the library community on the first Monday of every month called “Music 2 Grow”. Brodie from local company Kidfit also hosts baby band sessions at the library. These workshops introduce babies and parents to healthy eating and fun physical activity through songs and movement. It is wonderful to see so many babies here each week. They remind us of the important role we play in early literacy and learning. We look forward to seeing their new faces and we encourage all new parents to introduce their children to our activities as early as possible at Cooroy Library”. For information about these events contact the Cooroy Library on 5454 9000.

COOROY RAG Helping Queenslanders for 30 years

by Carol Watkins, Deputy Local Controller, Sunshine Coast North IF you a Facebook or Twitter follower, there’s a new website www.hardenup.org that aims to empower Queenslanders to become selfreliant during natural disasters. Climate change and population growth present new challenges for our severe weather resilience and this website aims to build community resilience to severe weather by raising awareness of hazard exposure. Social media offers the potential for members of the public to identify their personal risk exposure to cyclone, severe storm and storm surge and you can connect with HardenUp via your Facebook and/or Twitter accounts. Apparently during the 2011 storm and cyclone events, people were able to find out what was happening in their area by using Facebook and Twitter as opposed to waiting for ‘the next news bulletin’. Please have a look at another new website, www.stormwise.com.au, which is a joint initiative between SES and NRMA Insurance, containing storm safety tips as well as advice based on first-hand experiences of SES volunteers. Far North Queensland has been receiving unprecedented rain so far this season. We hope the deluge doesn’t spread to us down here in the South East. We in the SES have been talking a lot about sandbagging lately and it is perhaps timely to remind you to think about what happened last year. Did you get excess water into your property? Did water enter your house? Where did it enter? The most common entry points for water are through the garage, or through the front or back door. If this has happened to you, perhaps it is time to stock up on sandbags. Think about how many you need. The SES supplies sandbags – small enough to be lifted

by most people, and you probably need a row longer than your entry point, multiplied by three, so you can build a wall three sandbags high. You can contact any of the Group Leaders on their numbers below to arrange to collect some sandbags; or you can make your own, using shopping bags or garbage bags. Plastic placed below and up behind the bags is very useful too. A question I have posed in this colum previously is ‘are you able to survive without help for 72 hours?’ This is still a valid question as during a big storm event it can take quite a long time to get to all people needing assistance. Please take this into account and be prepared. All households should have an emergency kit, containing at least a torch with spare batteries, a first aid kit, a portable radio and important documents including insurance policies, all in a waterproof bag. For any further information on joining the S.E.S. contact our Group Leaders: for Cooroy, Pauline Eglington 0427 349218; Pomona, Steve Muir, 0428 571213; Tewantin, Murray Caddie, 0410 512535; and for Boreen Point, Ron Williams 0488 795102.

No amount of liquid sunshine was going to dampen Emily’s beautiful smile when she said I DO to long time beau Luke Grigg. Many Cooroy locals will remember Emily Horwood from the Bendigo Bank. Now calling Mackay home, it was always Cooroy, Emily had her heart set upon to exchange her wedding vows. Local Celebrant Celeste Frances Scott, along with family and friends ensured the ceremony was memorable for all the right reasons on the day for Luke and Emily.

They may have known each other for years as a couple of Cooroy local kids, but it took Cupid a decade or two to send that arrow off in the right direction for Brooke Bryant and Blake Magin. Marrying at the Cooroy Botanical Gardens on the fifteenth of October, these two long standing local families celebrated as local Celebrant Celeste Frances Scott officiated their love story.

Congratulations to Carla Munro of Cooroy and Aaron Moran of Bli Bli on their recent wedding on the 15/10/2011. The newly weds are pictured with their children Noah, Kloe and Coby

POMONA State School’s annual ‘Pomona in the Park’ is on again. In its sixth year, this community event is continuing to grow and provide a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talents of the Pomona State School students. Each November over 1000 people bring their picnic rugs and hampers to Stan Topper Park for an evening of fun and entertainment that culminates in a spectacular fireworks display. This end of year celebration is an opportunity for the students of Pomona SS to experience the rush of performing in front of a huge audience with the support of a professional sound and lighting system provided by the generous sponsorship of IGA Pomona and Page’s Furnishers. These local businesses have been onboard since the beginning and their continued support is greatly appreciated by the Pomona State School students, parents and staff. The Lions Club and Mannies provide a delicious array of food and

drinks to assist in the carnival atmosphere that makes the event one of the major community activities on the town’s calendar. As the time rapidly approaches, class teachers and students are busy planning performances that will be a major part of the Arts curriculum for term 4. Previous years have seen the stage come alive with dancing puppets, cave people walking their dinosaurs, jungle animals and Egyptian mummies. Who knows what wonderful characters will grace the main stage in this year’s spectacular? We eagerly await for Thursday 10 November, when downtown Pomona comes alive again with the songs, dancing feet and thunderous applause that spills across the surrounding hills only allowing the stillness of the night to reclaim the town after the final cracker has exploded ending another celebration of what makes Pomona State School and this town such a great place in which to live and learn.

Pamper packages at Lakeridge

THE year is passing by and we are all preparing for Christmas. For a lot of us it has been a hard year with the global economic crisis, businesses have to make sure that they offer value to their customers. At Lakeridge Health & Beauty this is something that we have always strived for. Looking after the health and wellbeing of our clients. Often our new clients will walk through the door and comment on how relaxed they already feel, as our bushland setting in Miva Street is very pleasing, and the clinic itself is cool and inviting. We understand our clients are looking for comfort, value for money and treatments and products that work. Lakeridge has been established in Cooroy

for 12 years. We have a very loyal client base, which is growing every day. White Ribbon Day WHITE Ribbon Day is 25 November, the UN Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The White Ribbon organisation’s current campaign encourages Australian men and boys to swear an oath to stop violence against women. The Oath – “I swear to never commit, excuse, or remain silent about violence against women” – goes beyond just clicking a button. By swearing the Oath and wearing a white ribbon on 25 November, we can all actively show our commitment to promote positive attitudes and behaviours towards women.

AS the weather warms up, out come the flip flops and sandals. Unfortunately though, this type of footwear can often result in foot problems and pain. We have already noticed an increase in the number of people presenting to the clinic complaining of heel pain. Many of you will be familiar with this. You wake up and as you put your foot on the ground, there is sharp pain under the heel like you’ve stepped on a pin. The first few steps are very painful, then things ease off. The same happens each morning until gradually the symptoms are there most of the time. This condition is known as plantar fasciitis which is an inflammation of the connective tissue which runs from the ball of the foot to the heel of the foot (plantar fascia). This inflammation is caused by excessive and repetitive strain being placed on the foot without adequate support and /or poor biomechanics. While sandals and flip flops may be cooler to wear in summer, the majority of them have hard, flat soles and no arch support. When

Make your own natural make up workshop WORKSHOP with Beautician & Organic Make-up Specialist Kate Noakes. IS YOUR CHILD’S SPINE IN LINE? KIDS SCOLIOSIS CHECK & INITIAL CONSULTATION Did you know scoliosis in kids does not always present with symptoms, however it may be related to other health problems as your child grows into adulthood including: spinal misalignment, headaches & neck concerns, hip problems & pelvic imbalance to name a few. These concerns may lead to degeneration, arthritis and pain. Have your child’s spine professionally checked! Discover how this method of health care will work for your child. Our approach deals with spinal correction, nutritional support and exercise programs. Best of all our method does not include any drugs or medication, it’s natural, low force & very safe.

choosing summer sandals, be sure to choose a shoe that has some heel support, arch support and a firm but flexible sole. If you need to walk long distances, try to wear a more supportive shoe rather than sandals. Standard thongs should not be worn at all if you are suffering from heel or foot pain. The earlier that treatment is sought for foot pain, the easier it is to treat. Treatment can include antiinflammatories, ice, taping, massage, stretches, ultrasound and taping. It is important to ensure that the calf muscles are flexible to allow adequate ankle bend and reduce the strain on the plantar fascia. Foot strengthening exercises can also be included to support the arch and reduce the risk of recurrence. A biomechanical assessment will determine if hip (gluteal muscle) weakness is contributing to the biomechanical problems. If you are suffering from foot pain or need some advice on summer footwear, seek advice from a health professional as soon as possible. Craig and Rebecca Steele own Hinteractive Physio and can be contacted on 5442 5556.

Popular psychic meditation class at Cooroy Libary HEATHER Paterson’s popular psychic meditation class at Cooroy Library every Thursday at 6 pm goes from strength to strength. However, she says new people are always very welcome! A psychic and clairvoyant, Heather says the popularity of the psychic meditation sessions has exceeded her expectations. “Through word of mouth it is quite amazing how many people have found me. It has evolved into something very special, a real community feel” Heather, a mother of two, said. Heather puts the success of the session down to two things “Firstly everybody who attends gets a psychic reading. People are always commenting how accurate the readings are. And secondly, about how much more calm and happier they feel after the meditation”. In the Cooroy Libary meditation session, Heather communicate’s and receives accurate messages from the group members’ deceased relatives and friends. “Once the meditation is over I share with everyone what I have seen for each person,” she said. “It’s lovely to be part of this group and to

share in the healing that happens for many people.” Born in Scotland, Heather says she is grateful to have been given such a gift that she shared with her mother and grandfather. “I did a reading with one man and we were able to connect with his girlfriend of about 20 years ago who had died in a car accident when they were together,” Heather said. “They didn’t get to say goodbye, so he was able to say goodbye and get closure after all those years.” To book a psychic reading or enquire about the Thursday 6.15pm Cooroy Library meditation/psychic reading, contact Heather on 0420 924 194 or (07) 5471 0172. Workout Shed celebrates 1st birthday with great giveaways IT’S a good news story … Cooroy and the Hinterland is getting fitter, healthier more social and The Workout Shed has turned one. “This month it’s your chance to join with us and be in the pool to win a great range of prizes from sporting equipment and accessories, training packages through to pamper packs, gifts and supplements,” said head trainer Russ Price. “We are also offering free fitness assessments (valued at $65) for all new clients for the whole of November. Russ said he is amazed at how quickly this year has gone. “We have gone from having one instructor and one type of Core Strength class to choose from, to 3 instructors and 5 different class offerings. Our specialised programmes and personal training focuses on the individual and not on mass numbers. It works and is helping many of our clients reach their health and fitness goals. We don’t have lock in contracts, we have per-

sonal service and a facility with atmosphere. And we have a massage therapist and recovery equipment to help you on your health journey. “Our youngest client is 12 and our eldest is 74. Age and ability is no barrier. The mind is the master. “We have a great crew of people who love a laugh and support each other, no matter what their ability. They value their health and are happy to invest in it, rather than invest in illness. It’s a positive approach to wellness.” So what do you do to win? All you have to do is enter the draw during the month of November, be a new client or be a current Workout Shed head and attend their Fitness Gala to be held at the Cooroy Hotel November 19 th. Should you wish to book in for your free fitness appraisal, simply call and make an appointment. So be a winner. Join in, meet some great people, get fitter and start 2012 flying! Drop in to the Shed at Lawnville Road or call 5442 6338.

EVER wanted to make your brown eyes blue? Or do you fancy vampire or cats eyes for a bit of fun at a party? For many teenagers and young adults who have no need for correction their vision, coloured and cosmetic contact lenses have become popular and most are not aware of risks of potentially costly health consequences. With the School Formal and the holiday Party season fast approaching, local optometrists Jenny Currie and Heather McLeod warn potential partygoers that purchasing bootleg coloured contact lenses from unlicensed vendors without prescription, professional fitting and care instruction might just be a fast track to the “eye hospital”. “We know that many young people are buying lenses from market stalls, fashion shops and even online, all without proper fitting and care instruction” says Jenny. “They don’t realise the serious consequences of a poor fitting or dirty lens. If a lens is too tight it can cause squeezing and scratching. If a lens is too loose, it will be uncomfortable, move around excessively and even fall out. But by far the most serious concern is the risk of serious infection. There are bacteria that have a predilection for the eye and can cause a severe eye infection which can potentially cause blindness.” “It’s scary for us to hear about young people sharing cosmetic contact lenses, wearing them without cleaning and disinfection in between wears and sleeping in these lenses” says Heather. “Due to the layer of tinted colour, these speciality lenses are thicker and harder than ordinary contact lenses. This can lead to the eyes being deprived of adequate moisture and oxygen” she adds. “When the eyes are deprived of water and oxygen, the blood vessels dilate, causing symptoms such as itchiness and bloodshot eyes.” Everyone wearing contact lenses, whether for vision or cosmetic reasons, should receive professional fitting, instruction and follow-up care. For further information on contact lenses or to arrange an appointment contact optometry@ cooroy on 5442 5555. optometry@cooroy can be found at 62 Maple Street, Cooroy. www.optometryatcooroy. com.au

APPARENTLY a death of a loved one and moving house are in the top 5 most stressful things to cope with when it comes to life changing events. I have just moved and totally agree, no matter how you go about it, it’s huge. So I thought I would share with you some useful moving tips that I’ve found work, which will save you time and effort when moving. The first thing to do is use the net, use a search engine such as Google or simply type in www.movinghouse.com.au then down load the moving house checklist. This checklist is so comprehensive it could almost move you itself! It has everything from the dates to booking the removalist to prompting you to return that library book, by the way of a tick check list. By reading through the list and by spending half a day on the phone you can organise the telephone, Internet, gas, electricity, disconnections and reconnection, the relevant authorities of your new address and have the kids school transfers sorted. As extra bonus you will have plenty of boxes ticked. Then it’s just the packing to go. Depending on your budget you can have the ultimate stress free move and hire a removalist, which specializes in packing up your house and then unpacking it for you at the other end. It’s the easiest but most costly way to go. If you are moving yourself on a slightly lesser budget, the best advice I have for you is to go around your home and pack up

one room at a time. Make sure to keep out just the essentials you need and buy lots and lots of butcher paper. Newspaper will leave your hands and treasures smeared black with ink especially if your belongings are left in boxes for a couple of weeks. Also get pest control in a couple of weeks prior to packing to ensure that you won’t be moving any unwanted pest from your old place to your new one. Pets are a big concern for many homeowners when moving too. My advice on this is to go the RSPCA website it’s full of practical know how on the best way to move your pets and how to ease them into their new environment. There are tips for specific pets and also extra steps for moving your pets interstate or overseas. So all in all I have found research is key. Use the net and ask your friends for advice. We all have moving horror stories to share and retrospect is always fabulous after the event. But whatever happens, remember moving is huge and no matter how organised you are it is always good to have a couple of days off just to get your head around the upheaval. The calmer you can stay the happier your kids, pets and family members will be too. If you are buying, selling or would like a free appraisal and some moving advice you can always contact me at melanie.hinterland@rh.com.au or on 0488 1207 205 and I will be happy to share my experience and expertise.

for the inspiration award. Adult leaders who received awards for leadership were Kate Thomson, Trevor Ross and Andrew Gilmour. An “adult leader of the year award” was then drawn from the group of adult recipients, with Andrew Gilmour taking the supreme award. Adult leader Bruce Dawson also received a certificate for ten years of meritorious service to the cadet program. Cadets and leaders from across the state are nominated each year in several categories. Groups are judged on performance in training, administration, operations policy and procedure.

Cooroy Rotary have a special evening at NDHS AT a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Cooroy held in the Hospitality wing of the Noosa District High School there were 3 great courses to satisfy the members and visitors appetite, followed by a talk on her homeland Sweden by our visiting exchange student Kajsa Berggrund. What a great job the staff and students do at this venue. Well done all. Kajsa is seen receiving gifts from David Cramb (International Director) and Rotary President Cath Lyndon.

Permaculture Noosa THE next Permaculture Noosa meeting will be held on Thursday, 17th November at the Memorial Hall, Maple Street, Cooroy (next to the RSL). Doors open at 7pm, the meeting is free and open to the public. The guest speakers this month include Tom Kendall who has a permaculture property at Kin Kin. Tom not only grows an abundance of food (including vegetables, meat and dairy) on his chemical free property, but he also teaches others about permaculture. Come along and hear Tom talk about what is happening in his garden and on his property at the moment. Our special guest is Anne Wensley, who has been living a permaculture lifestyle in Caloundra since the mid-1980’s. Anne believes permaculture has seeped into every facet of her life and she will be talking about the things she has experienced and the many things she has learnt during that time. Anne will talk about community activism, neighbourhood support groups, cashless trading,

banking, having no waste, using and educating local councillors and MP’s, being a mentor or wise elder, public disobedience, links with local media, ‘glocalisation’, being a village healer/counsellor, and providing home schooling advice. Come along to hear from these two very active and knowledgeable permaculture practitioners. We start the evening at 7pm with a MARKET PLACE, where members will be selling their home grown produce, goods they have made themselves, permaculture plants and organic dry goods, amongst other things. There will also be an ‘Advice Table’ with someone to answer your vegie gardening and permaculture questions. The evening concludes with tea, coffee, homemade Chai and cakes for supper (gold coin donation), which gives you the chance to talk to other permies and our guest speakers.
