THE newly renovated Cooroy Memorial Hall was the venue for the Cooroora Woodworkers Club annual Woodcraft Show over the last Friday and Saturday of September, and the event has been hailed a great success by club President John Cantwell. “Our Show attracted many visitors, including locals, people from the Sunshine Coast and holidaymakers from further afield,” said John. “We received very positive feedback from attendees, many of whom said there was a very welcoming feel about the event.”

The Deputy Mayor of Noosa, Councillor Frank Wilkie opened the show and heaped praise on the quality of the woodwork on display. “It is wonderful to see a communitybased club such as the Cooroora Woodworkers going from strength to strength, and the exhibits on show are a credit to the skill of the club members,” he told the crowd. As part of the Show, woodworking clubs from as far away as Ipswich battled to be judged the best in a variety of woodworking skills. Members of the Cooroora Woodworkers Club were ex-

cited to win the interclub competition, the first time in six years that the coveted winner ’s shield has returned to Cooroy. Visitors to the Show were able to view beautiful exhibits including woodturning, carving, boxes, furniture, intarsia, fretwork and toys. Items on display included work by local school students, and many visitors remarked on the quality of their work. Demonstrations throughout the two days kept visitors entertained, while the free box-making activity for kids was one of the busi-

RSL Club, Bendigo Bank and Noosa Council for their generous support. John also thanked the residents of Cooroy for their patronage of the Woodcraft Show, and especially their generosity towards an appeal for farmers battling the drought. “We asked visitors to make a gold coin donation but we were amazed how many notes were added to the collection to help Queensland farmers through this tough time,” he said. John summed up his closing address by saying, “I’m very proud of our club and its members, and I’m delighted with the way that local people and local businesses helped make our Woodcraft Show for 2018 such a roaring success. Thank you!”

Australian Body Art Festival, a Sunshine Coast Business Awards Finalist

FINALISTS in the 2018 Sunshine Coast Business Awards were announced on Monday 24 September in recognition of the region’s outstanding business lead-

ership. Amongst the 120 finalists, The Australian Body Art Festival was recognised in the category of Festivals and Events for their outstanding business

management, innovation and growth. Initial judging of finalists examined each submission for key aspects of business, including customer service, innovation, use of technology and commitment to sustainability. “This is a fantastic event that offers something really unique and different. Dozens of artists and thousands of spectators attend this festival each year and they always say how much they love it and what a wonderful experience it is to see living works of art come to life. As well as the cultural and social benefits this event also has significant economic benefits for the region,” said event manager, Danielle Taylor. Each year the Australian Body Art Festival is

organised and run by the volunteers at the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce who dedicate many, many hours to help create such a wonderful and unique festival. It attracts artists and spectators from around Australia and overseas and is a festival of colour and entertainment that sparks the imagination. With several types of body painting, fashion, music and roving entertainment on offer it is a two-day festival that should be on everyone’s must do list. In congratulating each of the finalists and winners, Awards Chair Jennifer Swaine said: “Once again it is fantastic and humbling to see firsthand the high calibre, innovative and progressive

business community we have here at the thriving Sunshine Coast.” “It is truly inspiring and rewarding to hear the stories of each of the finalists; it is a very significant achievement to be recognised for such achievement and every business involved deserves acknowledgement,” she said. Ms Swaine said that yet again the quality of entrants this year was impressive. “It is inspiring to see so many passionate and motivated professionals locally, building a solid future for the Sunshine Coast’s continued success, and these finalists are ambassadors for not only their industry but our region looking into the future.”

Join the Pink Precinct Fun Trail ON Saturday 20th October, Cooroy’s streets will be awash with walkers decked out in weird and wacky pink outfits all participating in a pink treasure hunt. While this event is an outright fun fest it also has an important cause - raising funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and awareness about the most commonly diagnosed disease in Australia that sees 1 in 8 Australian women and 1 in 700 Australian men expected to be diagnosed in their lifetime. Getting involved is simple and sure to be fun. Dress in pink, turn up at the Cooroy Memorial Hall at 8.30am on Saturday 20 October, purchase a passport for a gold coin donation and then embarked on a fun trail around Cooroy searching for pink objects and one blue object. There are loads of prizes up for grabs for best costumes and also lucky door prizes for people complet-

ing the trail. All ages and fitness levels can participate in the fun, with previous years seeing everything from prams to canines joining in. There is even some fancy pink entertainment thanks to the support of Nova Star Productions and Aerial Dreaming. As is always the case in Noosa, local businesses have generously sponsored the event by donating prizes. Hosted by Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Belvedere News, Fiona Winter Realty, Cooroy Future Group, Cooroora Woodworkers, Butter Factory Shop, Lou Lou’s Hair and Beauty, Cooroy Drapery, Cooroy Harvest Fresh, Katie Rose Cottage Op Shop, The Sacred Pantry, Noosa Physiotherapy, Inspired Martial Arts, Hinteractive Physio,

Councillor revisits 1988 A free tree for your thoughts

EUMUNDI CATTLE SALE Please give David a call to discuss the current market or for any of your livestock requirements To receive our updates and reports via email, please reply with “ADD” to our email address below.

David: 0412 704456 Clint: 0428711102 Email: david@starihaauctions.com.au www.starihaauctions.com.au

IN a re-enactment of his 1988 campaign Noosa Councillor Brian Stockwell is conducting a survey of hinterland residents to identify what they see as the challenges facing the local area. As he did back then, he is also offering free trees to those involved. “I am asking the same questions as were answered thirty years ago. It will be interesting to see if the expectations of people living in the hinterland have changed and to compare what people think are the greatest challenges facing their local area today compared to 1988,” Cr

Stockwell said. At that time the Noosa Hinterland was one of the fasting growing areas in Australia, which resulted in 41% of respondents considering ‘adopting a plan of sensible balanced development’ to be the greatest challenge facing the local area around Cooroy. In the lead up to the 1988 election Brian owned and operated a wholesale nursery and propagated one thousand native plants to give to residents. Over October he will be visiting the towns of Kin Kin, Cooran, Pomona and Cooroy re-enacting the gesture, offering anyone

willing to share their thoughts in the survey a free native plant. The results of the 1988 survey were encapsulated by then local cartoonist Kees Pel in a poster entitled “Concept 2000” (pictured). This long-term plan envisioned things that have long since come to pass, such as the tracks and trails network, a highway bypass of Cooroy; and at a time when fax machines were the latest technology and not even local schools had computers - a ‘satellite relay station’ on Black Mountain. However, other 1988 proposals are just as topical today, such as a community bus serv-

Brian Stockwell and Kees Pel with Concept 2000 Plan in 1988 icing the hinterland and a demonstration solar and wind farm. You can meet up with Cr Stockwell at after the Pink Precinct Fun trail in Cooroy on 20 October,

Kandanga students aim for scarecrow prize KANDANGA State School is working to increase its student numbers as 2019 nears, and it’s events like the Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival which allow the student body to show off. The school prides itself on its community connections, and its students won the children’s category of the annual scarecrow festival last year. P&C spokeswoman Lesa Bell said the children were eager to build their scarecrow entry this year before school broke for the September holidays, and they are hoping to impress the judges for the second year in a row. Their scarecrows are in the mix for cash prizes across four categories, including one for scarecrows made from the area’s aggressively invasive vine – cats claw. All scarecrows eligible for judging will be on show until November 10, and a Google map will be ready next week to lead you down country roads to discover new ‘crows as well as places in Mary Valley Country. Winners of the scarecrow awards will be announced at a harvest dinner with a seasonal banquet at Kandanga Kitchen on November 9, the eve of the Mary River Festival, from 6pm. Mary Valley Artslink, which hosts the annual festival, will run the bar. Bookings through Eventbrite. Festival inquiries info@maryvalleyartslink.com.au

Grab your broomstick and help celebrate Cooroy Blue Light’s 10th birthday Get your freak on and don your dancing shoes because the Cooroy Blue Light Disco is celebrating its 10th Birthday and 100th blue light disco on Saturday, October 13, with a Halloween themed outdoor family fun night at Cooroy State School. This fun-filled event runs from 5pm - 9pm and cost is $7 (which includes a ticket for a free sausage sizzle). As well as the DJ from 6pm, there’ll be a blow up obstacle course and target, face painting, lucky door prizes and best dressed prizes. The Cooroy Blue Light disco is a great community initiative that is fully supervised by Police, SES and Blue Card volunteers. It’s a safe fun environment for kids to enjoy some social time with their friends.

Free electric bike group ride Cooroy residents will have the chance to try out an electric bike during a free group ride being run by Zero Emissions Noosa. “The ride is scheduled for Saturday 10 November, from 8-10am, departing from Apex Park, Maple Street, opposite the Library,” said ZEN President Vivien Griffin. “We can take a maximum of 10 participants and rides fill up fast, so I encourage residents to book early. “We had to schedule a second ride at Tewantin due to the demand, and participants really enjoyed the experience.” “ZEN is running these rides as part of our commitment to encouraging more sustainable transport choices for many journeys, such as riding to work,

the shops or just recreational enjoyment. The sales of electric bikes are growing at a rapid rate globally, and these rides are our way to allow people to give them a go and ask questions.” “We supply the bikes and helmets. The ride will commence with a safety and technical briefing, and then we will explore a pathway and quiet road route around Cooroy to give people a chance to test the capacities of an electric bike. Adult riders of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate, but we cannot take children due to the size of the bikes.” “We are grateful to Noosa Council for its funding support. People can register at zeroemissionsnoosa@gmail.com or phone 0407116105.

Full steam ahead for markets THE Dagun Growers Market is up and running again and gearing up for the return of the Mary Valley Rattler. Train enthusiasts and spectators alike have been coming to buy their weekly fruit and veg as they wait for a view of the steam train during its final testing phase. The start date for passenger travel is imminent. While waiting for the train you can taste Kenilworth Dairies cheese, sample wines from Moffatdale Ridge or sit with a coffee and cake and chat with friends or the locals in very pleasant, congenial surroundings, and do your shopping. The market is held every Saturday at the Dagun station, starting at 3pm. The out-

standing fresh produce is grown in the Mary Valley using organic methods. No sprays and a soil improvement program means that nutrient rich, uncontaminated food is what you can be sure of. When rich, healthy soil is the basis of farming, there is a much reduced pest problem and while there might be the odd bite out of a leaf sometimes, there is no need for the killer chemicals. It’s a treat for both locals and visitors to take a drive through the Mary Valley, checking out the local towns, markets and food trail locations. And now the Dagun Growers Market is back on track there is one more great place to stop off.

Credit Card Debt versus Home Loan Debt Simone Flavelle, Senior Branch Manager, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches DEBT can be classified into three simple categories – bad, necessary and good. Bad debt is the never-ending credit card balance that you never seem to be able to reduce, let alone pay off. Necessary debt is the loan that most of us need such as a car loan or home loan. Good debt is the tax-deductible loan for income producing investments such as rented real estate properties or shares. To get ahead you need to concentrate of paying off the bad debt as quickly as possible and then reduce the necessary debt to a comfortable level. Start with the credit card account and make more than the minimum payments each month. If you have more than one credit card, consolidate the cards into one low interest card account, but make more than the minimum monthly payment. Next target the car or personal loan. Check with your lender to ensure that you are permitted to make additional repayments without cost. A little extra can save considerable interest and reduce the loan term. If you are looking for a quick fix and if you have the equity in your home, seek an increase in your home loan and fully repay the credit card and/or car loan. If you choose this path, don’t be tempted to grow the credit card debt again. Have a credit card by all means, but have the limit reduced to a much smaller and manageable level. Now that you have consolidated your debts to a lower interest loan, have your salary paid into a mortgage offset account; create a budget that allows you to increase your payments; and change your repayments to fortnightly or weekly. In time this will reign in your bad debt. Then you can consider borrowing to buy income producing investments, such as property or shares

that are expected to grow in value over the long term. This type of good debt can also be more tax efficient as interest repayments on loans to buy an investment property or shares is generally tax deductible. If you have any questions about these or any other financial matter, please contact me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona) or on email simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au. Self-employed? There’s still time to grow your super Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* While approximately 1.3 million Aussies run their own show, one in five has no superannuation at all. Many Australians see self-employment as a goal worth aiming for. But running your own show can mean retiring with very little in super savings – one in five self-employed people have no super at all compared to just 8% of employees. Self-employed women are especially hard hit. Among women aged in their sixties, the average super balance for wage and salary earners is $175,000 – double the average balance of $83,000 for women who run their own business. Self-employed workers face unique hurdles The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) is calling for the Superannuation Guarantee, which underpins compulsory employer-paid super contributions, to be extended to include those who work for themselves. With around 1.3 million Australians running their own show, the idea certainly has merit. However, as any self-employed person will know, it’s not always easy finding the money to contribute to super. Spare cash is often re-invested in the business or set aside to cover tax bills. Self-employed people can face uncertain income streams, and it may seem sensible to squirrel money away for those times when income is sporadic or leaner than usual. Make growing super a goal to work towards Nonetheless, if you work for yourself there are some good reasons to contribute to super. For starters, it offers a source of income in retirement – one that could be more of a sure thing than relying on the sale of your business to fund life after work. Adding to super may also provide tax savings today. If you’re self-employed you can claim an annual tax deduction for up to $25,000 in “concessional” (before-tax) super contributions. Incidentally, this cap now applies across all age groups – a change from previous years when older Australians were able to claim a bigger tax break for super contributions. Concessional contributions are taxed at 15% within your fund. If this is less than your personal tax rate, adding to

your super could be a very tax-friendly way to save for the future. That said, if you are a low to middle income earner, claiming all your super contributions on tax may see you missing out on the government’s co-contribution scheme. It’s an area where it pays to speak to your financial adviser to help you decide the right blend of before and after-tax contributions. Small steps may generate big results Super contributions don’t have to be large or made via a single lump sum. It can be far easier on your cash flow to make small, regular contributions, and thanks to the power of compounding returns, even modest contributions could make a valuable difference to your final nest egg. An easy way to make growing super effortless may be to set up regular, automatic payments to your fund. Talk to your financial adviser about an amount you can comfortably contribute to your super on a regular basis. If you intend to claim a tax break for contributions to super, be sure to let your fund know in writing before you lodge your tax return for the current financial year. This is another area where you can contact us on 07 5447 7740 for the reassurance of professional support.

Pomona moves to restore its war memorial ALMOST 100 years ago, when Pomona’s population was less than a quarter of today’s, residents were grappling with the mixed emotions of relief at a world at peace – finally after a four-year years of bitter conflict – and the despair of knowing that a generation of young men from the town had gone away to war, never to return. A glance at the Pomona honour board reveals their names – Kelleher, Carter, Page, Ward and others; echoed in street signs and family names still known to all in a new century. As names of Australian soldiers began appearing among the dead of WWI and were buried on foreign shores, their mothers at home sought to remember them. At Pomona, that resulted in the town being the first in Queensland to establish a Memorial Avenue of trees, one for each of the dead. The first tree was planted in Memorial Ave on Anzac Day 1917. The picket fences and plaques that defined each memorial tree have, sadly, long gone. Only one remains and is kept at the Noosa Shire Museum. In 1939, just months before the outbreak of WWII, a volunteer committee dedicated the Pomona WWI War Memorial, in the form of a rotunda in its own memorial park. Annual commemoration of wartime service and sacrifice ceased at the memorial about 40 years ago. A survey of war memorials conducted in 1985 revealed that the Pomona memorial had been vandalised, its guttering rusted and gone, roof tiles smashed, flagpole bent and its distinguishing feature – a commemorative red light in a brass fitting – missing. And although the memorial has been repaired since, the full plan of what was envisioned by the original memorial committee and its

architect, Sidney W. Prior, has never been realised. A Cenotaph was planned, for instance. Late last year, Noosa Shire Museum and heritage architect Laurie Jones of Sunshine Beach researched the history of the memorial for a conservation management plan, which has become the basis of a partial restoration of the memorial, assisted by Noosa Council and approved by the Cooroy-Pomona RSL Subbranch. Vice-president of the Noosa Shire Museum Management Committee, Peter Hansen, is chair of the restoration committee. Since its formation, many volunteers have come forward to clean and paint the memorial, plant its garden beds and restore the commemorative light. The work is proceeding throughout October, culminating in a rededication ceremony to be held at Pomona War Memorial on the evening of 11 November, when the red light at its apex will be switched on. It will glow from 6pm to 6am every night as a symbol of remembrance. The hour-long rededication ceremony is open to all. It will start at 6pm, to be followed by a ticketed commemorative dinner sponsored by Bendigo Bank, with Major Gen. (retired) John Cantwell, of Cooroy, as guest speaker. Tickets are $40 each and can be booked by contacting the Noosa Shire Museum on 5485 1080. It is hoped that the Pomona community will support both events. In particular, the museum says children should be the focus of the rededication, with a special request to parents to help their child prepare a posy to lay at the memorial on Sunday evening, 11 November, so that the practice of commemoration is passed to a new generation 100 years on from the signing of the Armistice that ended WWI.

Museum announces sponsorship deal with Copperhead Brewery

Peter Hansen (Noosa Museum Vice President) and Brian O’Connor (Museum Committee member) sample the new ale served to them by Copperhead Brewery Manager, Matt Cook NOOSA Shire museum has unveiled a novel scheme to raise funds – just drink beer. In a joint marketing and sponsorship deal with Cooroy’s Copperhead Brewery and Restaurant, a special batch of ‘old style’ English Golden Ale beer has been brewed, with the business agreeing to donate 50 cents for every pot, schooner and pint of Golden Ale sold. Brewery owner, Jason Cox has also generously agreed

to personally match the donation. An initial 300 litres of the special beer is expected to be sold during the next month and, if popular, will be followed by another batch of the flavoursome mid-strength drop. “This is a perfect partnership,” said general manager Matt Cook of the novel arrangement. “We were looking at some means of tying our corporate philosophy into the local community,

and giving back, then along came the museum, which pointed out the history of beer in Noosa. It was a perfect blend, so to speak.” Copperhead brewer Davy Stabler, formerly of Brouhaha craft brewers and Macleod Brewery at Maleny, said his creative inspiration had been an old English beer, malt driven, but with hop bitterness to balance the flavour. “It’s similar to what

Fix that hole!

Captain Cook would have brought out with him and what our diggers would have drank on their way to Brisbane,” he said. Members of the Noosa Shire Museum management committee were among the first to taste the freshly brewed ale and gave it a ‘thumbs up’. The committee members said the museum would remain open to approaches from other businesses that could see mutual benefits through marketing cooperation. “We value business partners who demonstrate a commitment to their community via engagement with us,” they said in a statement. “By supporting us, the brewery is encouraging our shire’s pride in place through knowledge of the past. It is adding economic value by contributing to local tourism and the cultural economy. It is also looking to the next generation by creating handson learning opportunities for all ages, which is part of the visioning for the museum.”

CLAUDIA Ianson presented a cheque for $2,456 to the Rotary Drought Appeal last month on behalf of the customers and management of the Pomona Hotel. Claudia Ianson, Managers of the Pomona Pub said: “With large swathes of eastern Australia in drought for periods ranging from a year to seven years, with the record dry condition, farmers are facing ruin across New South Wales and Queensland in what some are calling the worst drought in living memory. Customers at the hotel have been most generous helping to raise funds to assist these farmers and their families at this difficult time.” Funds were raised through a raffle and sales from a special keg of Great Northern that were matched by Andrew

Ianson, owner of the Pomona Hotel. Warren O’Neill, President of the Rotary Club of Cooroy said: “On behalf of Cooroy Rotary I am delighted to accept the cheque and a big thank you to you and your supporters for this very generous donation to a very worthy cause.” “What is expected to be a dismal grain harvest for large parts of eastern Australia is not just bad news for farmers — it will also hurt rural businesses and contractors who rely on the agricultural sector to stay in business.” “We all have to support our farmers or we all suffer in the long run and Rotary will ensure that every dollar of the funds raised gets those in need because of this crippling drought as soon as possible.”

Celebrating iconic buildings of architectural significance, the event aims to encourage people within local communities to visit buildings which are identified as having significant architectural, cultural and social value through their unique design. Current occupiers of participating sites are encouraged to share all areas of the building, including areas normally restricted to the public and help visitors learn more about the building’s history including their purpose for being built and their current use. The Pomona Railway Gallery will open from 10am – 2pm over the 20-21 October weekend. Originally the Pomona Railway Station platform buildings, they were donated by Queensland Rail and moved to their current site. Since opening in March 2001 the gallery has grown from two buildings to now five, creating unique spaces for creative art and crafts. The Majestic theatre will open from 10am –2pm Sat 20 October and give visitors access to the green room and back

stage, and provide a glimpse into its rare organ chamber which has been undergoing restoration for almost six years. ‘The donated English Compton organ is one of only three in Queensland and the only one owned by a private theatre’, said organist and volunteer restorer Don Clark. ‘Momentum is building as it nears completion and we have received enquiries from people around the world keen to see and hear it at the Majestic’, he said. Opened in 2015, the Pomona Fire Station boasts state-of-the-art facilities which include a 2 bay drive through Engine Shed, training room and office, outdoor training platform and RCR training pad (Road Crash Rescue). Its external finishes and design embrace the heritage character of the town and adjacent local heritage building. Visitors can meet fire officers and see the facility between 10am – 2pm Sat 20 October. The lowdown on Zenthai Shiatsu massage ZENThai Shiatsu massage is a unique form of body work that has been inspired and adapted from various other modalities. It is versatile, powerful and wow. ZenThai aims to intentionally move chi/qi in the body. This boosts blood supply to the nerves, and therefore to the entire system. Stagnation manifests as both physical ailments & emotional blockages, which are one and the same. As above, so below. As within, so without. No headspace goes unnoticed in the realm of the body! For that reason, a flowing & flushing system is a vital one. Movement is a good place to start. And what better way than to relax into your body while someone does yoga for you? Let’s have a closer look at the concepts underflowing ZenThai Shiatsu. Japanese Zen Shiatsu massage: Meaning ‘finger pressure’, shiatsu aims to mobilise & manipulate the body through assisted stretching. Consequently it involves the use of applying pressure through hands & feet to the skin, as well as leaning one’s body weight against key channels. The ‘Zen’ of Zen Shiatsu comes from the continual touch between giver and receiver, with two hands placed on the body at all times. The giver is very aware of the nature of their touch, gentle, firm, and always with love,

nurture and presence. Zen Shiatsu is sometimes called ‘the spirit of touch’. This is very relevant for ZenThai Shiatsu therapy. Thai massage: Thai massage is a great way to release muscular & energetic tension. It’s a movement based therapy. Thai massage incorporates acupressure points, assisted yoga postures, and is given on a floor mat with lots of body contact between the giver & receiver. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) energetic concepts: Shiatsu massage is actually based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) concepts of the body. Therefore, it has an understanding of organ meridians and acupressure points. A ZenThai Shiatsu practitioner may examine the receiver through palpation, tongue and pulse diagnosis, incorporating moxibustion, cupping and diet/lifestyle advice into the treatment. Osteopathic Techniques: This includes techniques focused on joint mobilisation, craniosacral techniques, connective tissue patterns and fascia unwinding. All in all this makes ZenThai Shiatsu a dynamite of a therapy. You can book in with our brilliant practitioner Jaime-Lee at the Maple St. Acupuncture Clinic in Cooroy to experience this miracle.

health Watch out for swooping magpies

COOROY RAG

COUNCIL is warning residents to watch out for swooping Magpies and other birds this spring, as the breeding season begins. “Most Magpies do not attack, but during breeding season some individual birds can become aggressive in defending their nests,” says Council’s Environmental Services Manager Craig Doolan. “Other birds such as Noisy Miners, Peewees and Butcherbirds can also be aggressive.” If you are walking or cycling in known areas with swooping birds there are some simple precautions you can take: • Wear a hat and sunglasses or hold an umbrella

over your head. • To avoid the risk of falling, dismount from a bike and walk quickly through the area. • Attach cable ties to bike helmets to distract the birds when riding. “Wearing a hat and sunglasses this time of year is not only sun-smart but provides protection from birds as well,” Mr Doolan said. “Council encourages residents to learn to live with Magpies. In some unique instances we may have to call in a contractor to remove the bird.” For further information, contact Council on (07) 5329 6500.

Elder Law - what you need to know WITH an ageing population, legal services dealing particularly with matters specific to elder law have become increasingly common. The reality is that we are living longer. Because of this, it is important that we have in place long term plans for us financially, legally and for our physical well-being from retirement and beyond. These decisions can impact on your quality of life, dignity and relationships with family and friends. While no one likes to face their own mortality; as the gap between retirement and death continues to grow it becomes more and more important to ask the hard questions. Have you given some thought and discussed a plan with your family about what would happen if you were unable to look after yourself anymore or if you lost the capacity to make financial and health decisions for yourself? There are documents such as your Will, Enduring Power of Attorney and Advance Health Directives that can ensure you are looked after the way you want to be. It’s very important to have a plan in place. You’ve worked very hard for your superannuation and assets so ensuring that your estate goes to the people you want it to should be a priority. You may want to help your grand children or

Page 16 - Cooroy Rag, October 10, 2018

ensure your spouse is financially looked after as well as your children. Having a will drafted by an experienced estate lawyer who understands the complexities and the legislation affecting estates and has seen the things that can go wrong is a much better option than attempting to complete this important document through a will kit on your own. Retirement villages these days are finding they have limited spaces so it’s important to get advice on your eligibility and to really understand the complexities of the individual village’s contracts. They can all be quite different and exit clauses can be very confusing to someone that doesn’t have contract experience of this kind. There has also been a lot of media recently regarding abuse both physical and financial of older Australians. As much as it’s difficult to think about, what would you do if that happened to you? An experienced elder law solicitor can assist with these often challenging decisions Most of us don’t like to admit we’re getting older; but taking the time to plan both financially and legally for the future will make those retirement years so much more golden. From Eumundi to Kona Ironman Caleb Noble set to take on world’s best!

IN downtown Eumundi, 22 year old Caleb Noble is the friendly landscape gardener tending to the gardens in the grounds of the Imperial Hotel Eumundi. Manager of the Imperial Hotel Paul Thomas has just announced that the hotel is thrilled to be sponsoring Caleb – not for his handy pruning work (he is good at that though!) but for his endeavours away from things horticultural. Caleb also just happens to be a superhuman Ironman.

NEW ORGANIC FACIAL Redeemable on Organic Products

He is the current Australian champion – ranked in the top three in the world in his group (the 18 - 24 yrs category), and has qualified to compete at KONA, the IRONMAN World Championships to be held in Hawaii on 14 October. “He’s so very humble about his standing as one of the top ironmen in Australia,” says Paul “And the dedication he has to training – after a full day’s work tending to gardens – is truly impressive”. Caleb trains seven days a week, averaging 28 hours of training, and starting most days at 3.30am. “I’m averaging 25-26 kms a week swimming at Noosa Main Beach and at the Noosa Aquatic Centre; cycling about 400kms a week across the Noosa hinterland and down the Coast where there’s no shortage of amazing spots; and I’m running 85 to100kms a week,” says Caleb “My favourite spot to run is the Noosa National Park – such a special place,” he says. To put the upcoming KONA race in perspective, it entails a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and a 42.2km run (the run alone is the length of a full marathon!) Caleb automatically qualified for KONA after winning the Port Macquarie Ironman (one of the three key Australian Ironman events) earlier this year. He has also recently teamed up with Noosa-based professional Ironman Pete Jacobs (who won KONA in 2012) as a training partner and mentor. Caleb says The Imperial Hotel Eumundi’s sponsorship will help make his Hawaiian KONA dream a reality.

Spreading the kindness on Saturday 22nd September. We enjoyed meeting new people, seeing friends and talking about kindness. Kindness Club member, Brooklyn, wrote “On Saturday, the Kindness Club went around Cooroy handing out coffee vouchers. We saw a person sitting on a bench near IGA by himself so we gave him one and he said we made his day. Combined Coastal Car Club 25 year celebrations

Life Members Past and current members recently gathered in Cooroy for a weekend of celebrations to mark 25 Years as the Combined Coastal Car Club. The weekend kicked off with a “Remember When” family BBQ. Members shared memories, laughs and, of course, enthusiasm for their cars. Memorabilia from over the years was on display. Newsletters, club minutes, photos, club uniforms and event shirts documented the club’s history since 1993. A series of hand-written letters congratulating the Club on the organisation of motorkhanas and car shows highlighted the success and popularity of the Club from its inception. A “Let’s Celebrate” dinner was held at the Cooroy RSL. Founding Member and Inaugural President Barry Potter, current President Cliff Watson, and Barry’s grandchildren Bailey and Nicholas unveiled the 1993 – 2018 Honour Board which was crafted by the members of Cooroy Camphor Laurel. Bailey and Nicholas also won the motoring trivia quiz.

The weather intervened in the planned ‘’Sunday Cruiz” but didn’t dampen spirits as members enjoyed an impromptu lunch at the Clubhouse to wrap up the weekend. The achievements and contributions of several club members were acknowledged during the celebrations. Founding Members Barry and Susanne Potter, Alan Kenzler, Darryl Nielsen and Dennis Brown were presented with Life Member pins. Robert Davies, Travis Adams, Arthur Spickett and Peter Wilkes were presented with 20 Year Membership pins. Thanks to all members and local businesses who helped make our 25 Year Celebrations a success. The Combined Coastal Car Club will host the annual Cooroy Car Show on Sunday 21st October 2018. Come and enjoy a great family day as we continue to celebrate 25 Years as the Combined Coastal Car Club! For more information: http:// combinedcoastalcarclub.com.au/ or visit their facebook page.

Brand new – never been lived in Well-designed kitchen with walk-in pantry Great-sized master suite with walk-in robe 3 more good-sized bedrooms with built-in robes

Bed 4; Batth 1; Car4; 1012m2 If your dream is to live in a beautifully renovated original Queenslander you’d better book an inspection of 4 Ruby Street right now! Believe me, a property of this quality won’t stay on the market for long. Dating back to around 1930, this gorgeous home was built during one of the most beautiful periods of Queensland architecture. Packed with original features, on a generous 1012m2 block in the country town of Cooroy, it also boasts all the mod cons. This is one of the best renovations we’ve seen, preserving the home’s original charm whilst adding the most exquisite fittings and furnishings. This is a property that would look completely at home on the glossy pages of Country Style magazine, yet it is also comfortable and welcoming. Space is not an issue with this Queenslander, with 4 pretty bedrooms. There are 4 separate living zones, including a side sunroom, sitting room, media room and lounge/dining area, and the huge rear deck overlooking the gardens is perfect for entertaining. This classic 1930s home features a stunning entertainer’s kitchen, with a magnificent mix of black granite bench tops and painted oak cupboards, a 900mm gas

cook top, electric oven, dishwasher and butler’s ceramic sink. It’s a striking contrast to the beautiful VJ walls, French doors, casement windows, fretwork, painted hoop pine floorboards and 10-ft high ceilings, featuring detail from the Art Deco era. It’s like stepping back in time, but with the comfort of air-conditioning and other mod cons! There’s a fully fenced dog-proof yard, rear lane access with room for a shed and a pool - and to park the caravan and boat – and the most charming landscaped cottage gardens complete with fruit trees. Under the house there’s parking for four cars. Alternatively, it would make a wonderful shady play area for the kids or, because it’s of legal height, you could extend the home for more living space if needed. All this just walking distance from Cooroy’s schools, shops, cafes and services, and 20 minutes from the Noosa beaches. If you’re looking for a home in town with loads of charm and character, then look no further than this beautifully renovated original Queenslander. Call me soon if you don’t want to miss out! Cooroora Utd's Justin Loveridge (left) and Tony McCarthy (right) were joined by their proud sponsors

Cooroora United Football Club took the opportunity to do two things at once last weekend. Trophies were handed out to great applause at the senior presentation night, but the fact the U17 boys team won their grand final game was simply amazing. The timing of the gathering also couldn’t have been better for the Wombats. Their sponsors were invited to see what all the hard work amounted to this season and many were in attendance. Sponsorship co-ordinator, Justin Loveridge thanked the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Chapman’s Auto Repairs, Nathan Harris, JD Construction & Project Management, Kinetic Builders, Wright Cut Meats, Gelignite Jacks, Noosa Trophy and Engraving, Hinternoosa, Hutchinson

Builders, Hinteractive Physio and everyone who has worked together to make the 2018 season such a great success. “Through our president, Tony McCarthy and a great committee our club has grown from strong community foundations - just like many of our sponsors. “We’re here because our community gets involved and supports us. Without them we wouldn’t have the club we have today,” Justin said. “We have a dynamic mix of players and some really great teams coming through, and our U17 boys’ team is a great part of that. Our men’s’ and women’s Wombat teams are playing great football, and any way you look at it we’re a club on the rise - it’s exciting,” he added. One long-term sponsor has been Bendigo Bank and Justin wanted to thank them for their ongoing support. “The team at Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches have been a great support to us for many years. It’s just great to know when we’re planning next season we already have their support, and so it is for 2019. It makes a big difference for our club,” he said. Those sentiments were echoed by Geoff Edwards. “Renewing our sponsorship is the next step in a great relationship with the Wombats. We’re able to commit to sponsorships like this as more locals choose to do their banking with Bendigo Bank. Our motto is ‘bank with us and everyone benefits’. I think we can all see great things for the club in 2019 and we’ll be there cheering them on,” Geoff said. Anyone looking to become involved with Cooroora United over the summer period or looking to sign up for 2019 can do so by contacting the club through its website: cufc.org.au.

International All Stars golf day a big hit

SOCIAL PLAY AFTERNOON SPECIAL 7 DAYS - ONLY $15 after 2.30pm Contact Club for MEMBERSHIP DEALS

(l-r) Team Captains Jim Henderson, Dave Lyons and Grant Smallacomb at the presentations with Bendigo Bank's Geoff Edwards It was once said of golf: If it goes left it’s a hook, if it goes right it’s a slice, and if it goes straight it’s a miracle! Enjoying their golf, no matter what the eventual score are members of the Cooroy Veterans who hosted their event at Cooroy Golf Club last week. Themed as a day for International All Stars, members were categorised as either being home grown Aussies or imported from overseas. The Aussies, under the captainship of Grant Smallacombe won the day. Bendigo Bank’s Geoff Edwards was there doing his bit for the Aussies, but also as a sponsor from the Cooroy Community Bank branch. “We’re a proud sponsor of Cooroy Golf Club and I had a blast with the members. We have a great relationship and look forward to hosting a few more tournaments and events at the club in the coming months,” Geoff said. Social golf is available 7 days a week at Cooroy Golf Club, and new members are also welcome. Every Wednesday is Veterans day and ladies golf takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Competition day is every Saturday and new members are always welcome. For any golfing enquires, call Cooroy Golf Club on 5447 6258.
