THERE was a huge turnout for the ‘Meet the Candidates’ night on Tuesday, October 8 at the Cooroy Memorial Hall, proof that there’s a strong community interest in knowing who our choices are when we line up at the ballot box on November 9 to vote in a new Noosa Mayor and our six council representatives. There were several familiar faces with an already proven council track record including Bob Abbot, Tony Wellington, Bob Jarvis and Frank Pardon, and many newbies amongst the 15 candidates on the night who have put their hand up to stand for the new Noosa Council. Each candidate was given a short time to introduce him or herself before taking questions from members of the 250-strong audience. Although each candidate comes from a different background and work environment with individual associated skills relating to these differences, the overriding message from all of them was their passion to protect our

environment, our lifestyle and culture and our tourism industry. All were enthusiastic about building on our Shire’s current strengths to ensure a fiscally stable, diverse and ecologically aware region that listens to the community. Mayor hopefuls, Noel Playford and Patricia Petersen were also in attendance. President of the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Danielle Taylor, said she was more than pleased at the level of interest from within our community. “Cooroy has always been well respected and represented in local council, and we are more than hopeful this good rapport will continue after the coming election. Voting is compulsory. Information regarding postal votes can be found on http://www.ecq.qld.gov.au/2013LG.aspx?id=10425 (See page 2 for local vothing booth locations.

Volunteer’s Race Day This is where your Search Stops!

The Vollie Gang GYMPIE Turf Club was abuzz with a multitude of race goers in their finest “Black and White” outfits on Saturday, September 21st. Boosting the crowd were 60 much loved volunteers from various organisations enjoying a great day out courtesy of Bendigo Bank, Cooroy Guardian Pharmacy and the Cooroy RSL. Representatives from the CWA, Cooroy Pomona Sub Branch, SES, Black Mt Fire Brigade, U3A, Chamber of Commerce, Cooroy Pomona Lions Club, Cooroy Scouts and various sports groups enjoyed a well earned glass of bubbles or

two and a tasty picnic as well as bit of a flutter on the ponies. Event organiser Sandy Bolton said “It was a great way to say “Thank you” to these much appreciated “vollies”, who are just some of the hardworking residents who keep our local community organisations and clubs running. Those who were unable to attend because of volunteering commitments - Be sure not to miss out next year!” Volunteering has always been a strong tradition in Australia; and Cooroy can be proud to have a very strong volunteering

base. It has been estimated that monetary value of volunteering effort in Australia is worth more than $200 billion a year. In excess of 6.4 million people volunteer their time in Australia. As well as keeping our local organisations running, volunteers benefit from the satisfaction of helping others, learning new skills, and making new friends which enhance the quality of their life and their health. Why not be part of the fun? Find out about volunteering opportunities through Volunteer Cooroy by calling Sandy Bolton or Elaine Williams 5447 6131.

Discover the secrets of the Cooroy log maze THE Cooroy Log Maze, situated behind the Cooroora Woodworkers at the Lower Mill site, will be officially opened on Saturday 2nd November at 12:30. There will be an air of celebration as the Cooroy Lower Mill Board invites everyone to gather and witness a great community achievement, finally completed after years of planning and with the support of Council and the community. You will be entertained by the dulcet tones of local singer Ayla Scanlan as you are invited to tour the site and enjoy the unique ambiance Cooroy has to offer. For the first time, members of the public will also have the opportunity to join the Lower Mill Board, which has guided the development of the Lower Mill site as a resource to enhance the town and facilitate the participation of diverse community

groups in achieving that goal. For a small fee, you will be invited to attend general meetings of the Board, where you will hear about future opportunities to further develop the Lower Mill site, make your opinions known, and help shape the future of your town. Membership also entitles you to have a vote in the appointment of future Board members, and even nominate to take an active guiding role. Open meetings, to which all members of the Board are invited, will be held during the year commencing with an inaugural General Meeting on November 20th. Most of us who have moved to Cooroy in recent times have done so because we appreciate the sense of community and unique identity that lies at the heart of our town – this is your chance to take an active role in helping your town to become the best it can be.

THE free annual photo competition sponsored by Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy has become a highly popular component of the Christmas in Cooroy program with hundreds of entries received each year. This year it is bound to be even better with an increased prize pool, a new junior category, a brand new theme and special discounts for entrants! Entry is free and the photos go on display in a special exhibition at the Butter Factory Arts Centre between Friday 6 December to Saturday 4 January 2014 with an official opening at 6pm on Friday 6th December. “The theme this year is “Hinterland Highlights” which is pretty broad and open to the imagination. We expect we’ll

see all sorts of photos entered such as great vistas, interesting architecture, events or local people. The photo must be taken somewhere on the Sunshine Coast but otherwise it is up to the photographer. It is a competition for all ages with past winners including children, teenagers and older entrants. This year there is a new category for juniors and some fantastic prizes thanks to the Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy. It’s worth digging through your photo albums to see if there is anything relevant or get out there and take some new snaps,” explained Christmas in Cooroy Event Manager, Danielle Taylor. Prizes this year are

$500 for first place open age category winner; second place open age category will receive a Fujifilm X-F1 camera; first place junior category (under 15 years) will receive a Fujifilm XP150 camera; and second place junior category will receive a Fujifilm T550 camera. Dear driver, I don’t know what you were thinking, When I was well on the roundabout, my blinker dutifully blinking, You ignored me, and sped on just the same, With no time to note number or name, Luckily God and my reflexes kept me alive, You added ten years to my life, so now I’m one hundred and five!

Hush little baby, don’t cry such a lot, Soon you may have company in your cosy warm cot. The Americans, God bless ‘em, are developing a scheme, Which theoretically, should be a mother’s dream. It’s a computer, which they claim, will analyse, What the baby’s problem is, every time he cries. They’re talking words like vocal vibrations, cranial nerves, and hertz, Most of it understandable only to the experts. (It will even have the ability, to reveal a tendency, for Mummy to have too much alcohol, during their pregnancy!!!) it all sounds amazing, a useful scientific concept, but one which I doubt all mothers will unhesitatingly accept.

Most mothers know the cry, for uncomfortable and wet, “You’d better come and change my pants, or I’ll get really upset,” Another cry means “I want to see my Mummy”, “And bring the milk bar with you, I’ve got an empty tunny.” She knows when he is bored, or perhaps just melancholic, But when his lungs are full throttle, it could mean the painful colic. And if it’s just a tiny whimper, which doesn’t wake Mum at all, Would the computer register it, as an unanswered call? It’s true that most mothers, can instantly and accurately tell; the reason for her baby’s piercing yell. She doesn’t need a computer to identify the worry, And if the problem is serious, she’s there is in one heck of a hurry.

Business health check Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy BY now, most of us are well and truly on the other side of the 2012/13 tax year. Returns have been completed and we have just finished the first quarter of the new financial year. How did you fair? Inevitably some owners will be smiling, others hoping nothing else will go wrong, and yet another group wondering why all their hard work has amounted to so little profit. Whichever group you see yourself in, now is the ideal time to do a ‘health check’ of your business. A health check is

taking a moment to assess how your business is running compared with how you want it to be running. One of the first outward signs of a business in ill-health is its relationships with customers and suppliers. Little things start to slip. Customer requests and orders get misplaced or are not followed through. Quotes and invoices contain errors or are not sent. Suppliers are not kept up to date with changing circumstances and are frequently asked for favours. The word ‘sorry’ becomes a common part of conversations with customers and suppliers. The next sign to look for is reluctance among customers and suppliers to deal with you. Early indications of this are customer orders being limited to items that cannot be sourced elsewhere, where previously the order was for a wider range of items or services. Other indications include a reduction in the amount of contact you are receiving from customers and suppliers, and continual postponements of visits or meetings with them. Internally, job satisfaction will be one of the first things to suffer. This will be evident in increased sick-leave as well as late arrivals and early departures, and only polite attendance at staff functions. In the background there may be finger pointing and gamesmanship among individual staff members or faction groups. There may be also a general sense that work is something to be suffered rather than something your staff are proud of and derive satisfaction from. These conditions will lead to increases in staff turnover and reduced productivity. Financially, cash-flow is the heartbeat of the business. While it goes up and down in every business as customer payments are

received and suppliers and expenses are paid, the variation should be kept to a minimum, and the trend watched very carefully. Another important element to include as part of the health check is a reality check. That is, it is a good idea to reflect on what the business actually is, which may be very different to what you hoped it would be and how you are trying to promote it. Does your perception of the business match reality, and as self diagnosis may be difficult, review the numbers and ask some people you trust what they think your business is. One final check is to take a look at the future, short and long term and realistically assess whether your business is in a fit state to cope with it. This is the equivalent of looking at your own body and declaring it healthy, but in no fit state to run a marathon. The key assessment in this context is to understand the economic and competitive environment your business is likely to be facing and whether the business is ready for the range of scenarios it may encounter. A key question to answer in this regard is: Who are my future customers, where will they come from and what will they want?

Sandy at the Biosphere Festival WITH an election date of November 9 set for the Noosa elections, local business and community identity Sandy Bolton has been “pounding the streets” in the run up as a councillor candidate for the new Council. Without the traditional shire divisions, this is a monumental task for all candidates, and it will be vital for Hinterland residents to get behind their local reps. Sandy, a resident of the Noosa Shire for 20 years, has an extensive history working with private and not-forprofit organisations and sporting clubs throughout the area in business development, corporate governance, advocacy and management, which has been an excellent “apprenticeship” for one of the six councillor positions. Over the years she has made a number of submissions on a wide variety of issues including Affordable Living, The Sunshine Coast Regional Draft Plan, and Employment Vision and has represented our community at council

forums. “An effective representative will ensure that the needs of the community are taken to their Council in a clear, cohesive manner, and negotiate these into workable actions that produce measurable results. I am passionate about people and communities having a voice, and for that voice to become a reality”, said Sandy. As an experienced advocate for small business and community organisations, Sandy has current and relevant feedback of the key issues facing the shire and the importance of developing a sound economic base. “Attaining a balance between the sectors of the environment, community services, business and our lifestyle is paramount for a sustainable future. We can achieve this through a Council committed to assisting all sectors of the community through the researching of options and accessible consultation methods, and seeking of mutually beneficial solutions”.

Sandy has lived in Kin Kin, Pomona and Cooroibah with three generations of her family over the past 20 years. She has a long association with the Hinterland through community initiatives including the Kin Kin Village Voice up to the current Cooroy Project, which is the restoration of the Cooroy Memorial Hall to provide a platform for business and community programs including a Tourism incubator. Currently, Sandy is the Sport and Recreation Co-ordinator for 8 Noosa shire sporting organisations, and the Community Initiatives Manager for the Cooroy RSL. The hinterland community will know Sandy as the MC for the Trivia Nights which has assisted in raising funds for over 40 organisations over the last couple of years. Community groups better off under new pricing structure MOST not-for-profit community and sporting groups will now pay less for water and sewerage services under Unitywater’s new pricing structure. Charges based on the number of toilet pedestals and urinals will be scrapped and access fees will instead be based on the size and number of water meters on the property under the new, standardised pricing. The impact of the changes will vary, depending on the charges that previously applied but even combined with higher State Government bulk water charges, the majority are likely to pay less. Unitywater CEO, George Theo, said the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay Regional Councils had determined which groups in our service area would be transferred to the new pricing structure next month and 68% of those groups were expected to benefit from the move. “The new structure has more emphasis on user pays, so most of those occasional users should be better off.” He said a formula would be used to calculate charges for sewerage usage based on metered water usage and the land use code for the property under the local government planning scheme. “Obviously some of these groups are contributing more to the sewerage network than others,” Mr Theo said. “The land use codes provide us with an indication of how water is being used on the property and how much water is entering the sewerage network.” Unitywater would work closely with councils and those groups facing an increase under the new structure, in an effort to minimise the impact. Unitywater was unable to provide grants or subsidies under the terms of its agreement with councils, and community and sporting groups should check with their council about whether any assistance is available.

FORMER Noosa and Sunshine Coast mayor hasconfirmed he will contest the Noosa Council election to be held on 9 November - but as a councillor and not as a mayoral candidate. A veteran of 30 years in local government, Bob put an end to speculation about his future and is looking forward to re-entering politics with his own unique, uncomplicated style. Bob said he believes he can add some continuity and long-term knowledge to the new Noosa Council. “It’s crucial this council gets off on the right foot from January 1 next year and I believe I can provide some stability,” Bob said. “I’ve put a lot of blood, sweat and tears in the way Noosa looks and feels today and I’m keen to ensure that isn’t threatened in the next 2 years. Councils’ primary roles in the next 2 years will be the consolidation of the finances and planning principles and rebuilding the culture of the organisation to the level of openness and customer service that we had in the previous Noosa Councils. I believe I have the experience and the temperament to do that job well,” he added. Having just completed his contract as mayoral mentor with the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ), Bob said that if elected he would be free to allocate his time to doing his new role well. He was also keen to clarify his position after constant questioning from many community sectors about his future. “There are some tough decisions to be made in the next 2 years and I believe a steady hand and a modicum of wise counsel will be required to get

the best outcomes for our community out of those debates. With my experience I am well suited for both those roles,” he said. When asked about why he wouldn’t be running for mayor on 9 November, Bob was candid in his response. “Early this year I was asked to comment on the possibility of de-amalgamation being successful. I said then that I believed it could work, but made it clear I wouldn’t be standing for mayor and that I had done my bit for Noosa and the Sunshine Coast in that position. I also said that I still had significant interest in Local Government and would still be keen to be involved in some way until I was ready to retire. Since then, I have spent 18 months in all parts of Queensland as a mayoral mentor and I’m now keen to finish my career doing my bit as a councillor in Noosa,” Bob concluded. .

Town pulls together for ‘a fair day out’ THE town of Eumundi has come together to host on behalf of Equity Works Association, ‘A Fair Day Out’, an upcoming event held to celebrate and encourage diverse abilities. The event is to be held on Saturday 19th of October at the Eumundi Markets. The free event will run from 10am until 2pm and will feature a set list of local musical talent combined with a jam tent, jumping castle, street performers, face painting and creative expression workshops. Kylie Moore from Equity Works stated the organisation was delighted to put into action such a fantastic event in conjunction with the Original Eumundi Markets. “The fact that we are receiving so much

support from Eumundi and the surrounding Sunshine Coast is incredible, it’s exactly what the event is all about - supporting your local community to create and encourage inclusive communities for all,” Ms Moore said. Local businesses including Eumundi Meats and artist, Tracey Keller have shown their support for the event by their donating goods and services for the major raffle. Peter Homan, from the Original Eumundi Markets shared how excited he was to be supporting the event. “It truly is fantastic to see Eumundi, and the Sunshine Coast for that matter, come together to support and encourage a great day in the sunshine”, Mr Homan said.

By Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management FOR most of us, spring means swooping magpies, blossom on the fruit trees and changing the winter doona. It may also mean the arrival of your annual super statement in your letter box or inbox. Making sense of your super statement Your super statement might look a bit daunting, but it’s not as complicated as you think. To help make it easy, here is a simple checklist to guide you through your super statement this spring. Did you receive your statement? If you haven’t received your statement, your contact details may be out-of-date or your statement may be sent at a different time of year— for example on your account anniversary. Did you get more than one statement? You might have good reasons for owning more than one super account to keep the benefits of a particular fund, such as insurance. But more often than not, it’s accidental. The more funds you have, the more sets of fees you’ll be paying. If you’ve been thinking about finding and bringing together your super accounts, this is a great time to do it. The ATO’s super seeker site (ato.gov.au/Calculators-and-tools/ SuperSeeker) is a good place to start looking. Have all your contributions been paid? Check your statement to make sure all payments made by your employer appear on your statement, as well as any extra voluntary contributions you’ve made. From 1 July, the minimum rate of employer super contributions is increasing from nine per cent to 9.25 per cent, the first of a series of increases over the next few years taking the rate to 12 per cent. You can boost your retirement nest egg by:

· sacrificing some funds from your pretax salary at a concessional tax rate · taking advantage of government incentives. · Where are your savings invested? Your statement tells you how your money is invested and where your future contributions will be allocated. Different asset mixes may work best for you, depending on your financial goals, when you plan to retire and how much risk you’re prepared to take on. Are you fully protected? Your statement tells you how much insurance cover you have with your fund and how much it’s costing. Many super funds provide a default level of insurance cover. But you might want to think about increasing your cover to make sure you and your family are fully protected financially if something happened to you. How much are you paying in fees? Your statement tells you the fees and costs you have paid for your super fund to manage and invest your savings. These include rebates (fees paid back into your account as per your fee structure), and direct fees (the fees that apply to your plan and Benefit Category). Who will receive your money if something happens to you? Your statement tells you who you’ve nominated as your beneficiary (if you have made your nomination)—the person who will receive your benefit in case of your death. It’s important to renew your nomination regularly, particularly after significant changes in your life. Do you have any questions about your super or your super statement? Call us today on 5447 7740 for a conversation. *Chad Monroe & Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004 are

SHE is widely seen as the well-balanced, environment candidate hinterland voters have been waiting for. As a home-grown local, Darlene Gower went to school in Pomona, Tewantin and Cooroy, and now her family is growing up here. Darlene is a local with a passion for protecting what makes Noosa special, and a long history of community work and achievements to back up what she says. “I’ve loved growing up here, bringing up my kids here and working here in property management and tourism. I feel it’s time to give something back so that my kids can continue to grow up in the same beautiful place that I did.” Darlene Gower was one of the field of candidates who fronted up at Cooroy Chamber of Commerce ‘meet the candidates’ night on October 9th. “As my friends and family know well, this is not a job I’m applying

for. It’s a passionate commitment. And it’s a continuation of what I’ve been doing for a long time.” Darlene is a Vice President and honorary life member of Noosa Parks Association and has volunteered years of work to its flagship roles in helping maintain our iconic Noosa National Park and Double Island Point headland and its old lighthouse and cottages. Darlene was one of those who rolled up her sleeves and helped the Noosa de-amalgamation campaign, but her habit of ‘getting stuck in’ started back in the early 80’s as a fundraiser and first “Surfgirl” at Sunshine Beach Surf Club. (For those with long memories, It was Darlene Timms back them) A background in tourism and property management has given Darlene a deep understanding of the importance of retaining the low-key balance that

Darlene Gower with her husband Glen, children Blake and Jade, and Ollie the dog sets this area apart and that brings tourism, investment and jobs here. “I care as much about our economic future as anyone and I want jobs here for our kids” she says, “but not at the expense of the protected environment we’ve worked so hard for.” “We need long-term, sustainable employment

that enhances our clean liveable reputation. The growth engine for Noosa must continue to be small, local, innovative businesses that keep jobs and investment close to home.” “In Council I will work hard to build stronger bridges to the community groups that are the backbone of our shire,

and I’ll retain a focus on keeping our rates affordable for people right across our community.” Darlene Gower says the people of Noosa have high expectations of the council they’ve voted overwhelmingly to restore. She says “I’m happy to let my record speak for itself.”

Joe reaffirms commitment to Noosa community JOE Jurasavic is reaffirming his commitment to the Noosa Community to stand as a candidate for a new community focused Noosa Council. “As a family man and local small business operator, I believe ‘Joe the Handyman’ will be a handy man to have on Council, with a proven track record of working for our community. I am committed to work for a return of the level of services that Noosa enjoyed prior to the amalgamation of Councils. ”I firmly believe that Noosa’s identity as a unique region creates an opportunity to engage in new tourism strategies and opportunities, particularly engaging new technology. I am interested in building on our unique and historical places and engaging with our Hinterland, to enhance the attraction that our river and beaches already offer to provide a more complete and engaging Noosa experience. ”We have a unique opportunity, using a new and fresh generation of candidates coupled with experience to create a council that

will listen and engage the community and give direction and certainty to all it’s constituents. By taking advantage of new technologies we can establish new methodologies of engaging with the community as a whole, from the beaches through the Hinterland, giving all an ongoing voice in a Community Council’s decision making. ”In the next two years a new Council will need to map out its processes for meeting the Noosa Community’s needs including environment, tourism, economy and enhancement of our community lifestyle. We need to continue with the momentum of positive community spirit following the overwhelming vote for Noosa’s independence. ”The election on November 9th will be for a Mayor and 6 Councillors representing the Entire Noosa Region. With no divisional boundaries, I will be asking for your support in engaging the entire Noosa Community through a letterbox drop, at pre polling and polling day booths and in discussions with your friends, work mates and neighbours.”

Trivia Night THE annual trivia night fundraiser for The Forest Star will be held on Saturday, November 2, 5.45pm for 6pm start, at the Cooroy RSL Club. Liz Agerbeek and Jennifer Sadler had no idea that the germ of an idea to have a local newsletter in their area would develop into a wonderful community development tool. For the past six years residents from the end of Lake MacDonald Drive through to Ringtail Ck Rd have contributed their ideas and articles of local interest to help build a network of support and information in their area. Interest groups have grown and include a book club, a garden group and an RV group. To ensure the ongoing costs are met the funds are supplemented by the one and only annual fund raising Trivia Night. $20 covers a meal and a guaranteed night of fun and the opportunity to win great raffle prizes. BID Stimson celebrated her 90th birthday on 19th September at Kabara. Family and friends enjoyed a special morning tea offering many of the culinary delights Bid has baked over the years. Bid’s sister Amy and made a special trip to be with her on her special day. Memorabilia and photos on display brought back many wonderful memories of those 90 years, including the Centenary Award for service to the community through meals on wheels and work for the disabled. Since moving to the area Bid has been a volunteer on the Cooroy Rag and a member of the Cooroy Uniting Church. Dancing has always been a passion with Bid and husband Stim, who ran a square dance club at their property. Bid attended the Steppin In Line dance classes as spectator and was regaled with a poem from the dancers. A great time was had by all. A special thanks to the wonderful staff at Kabara who helped to make this day perfect.

dining & entertainment School of Arts Hall turns 101!

COOROY RAG

SINCE last year’s centenary celebratory concert with Katie Noonan it’s been a big year for Eumundi’s School of Arts community hall. For those unaware, this building is actually owned and looked after by our community, not by council or state government but by Eumundi and a large, dedicated group of people over its life and many ups and downs. When it was built in 1912 it was two storeys and considered one of the finest in SE Qld, but an infestation by termites saw it being lowered to one storey. Old wooden halls need plenty of maintenance and this year has been an

expensive one, but the community is committed to preserving this piece of history and see it continue for the next generations. Katie Noonan and her musical friends have again offered to help us celebrate this icon of Eumundi as it turns 101. Tickets sold fast last year and we could have filled the hall twice, so get in quickly. A showcase of jazz with a classical flavour is on offer, featuring the four times ARIA winning and seven times platinum selling songstress Katie Noonan with her jazz trio Elixir. Saturday, November 16, 6.30 - 9.30pm; Doors open at 6pm, Eumundi School of Arts Hall, Cnr Pacey Street and Memorial Drive, Eumundi. Tickets available through Red Chair (07) 5473 9498 www.redchair.com.au, Berkelouw Books and at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre (07) 5442 8762. $30 Adults, $25 Concession, $70 Family (2 adults and 2 children). 100% of profits will go to the Eumundi

Elixir featuring Katie Noonan School of Arts and the Eumundi State School Food and licensed drinks will be available on the night.

Keep your cool this summer LILLY Pilly Boutique knows how to keep your cool this summer… The answer COTTON!…. As we all know cotton is renowned for keeping the body cool in summer and is very comfortable and affordable to wear. It is a non-allergenic natural soft fibre that doesn’t irritate sensitive skin and at Lilly Pilly Boutique this season, there’s plenty of cotton to go around. Get yourself into a gorgeous Jendi cotton summer dress, a pair of tailored Jump cotton capri pants or a lovely Ellis and Dewey cotton tunic and you will breeze through the summer heat without breaking a sweat. Stocking a variety of ranges in cotton and sizes from 8 -18, Lilly Pilly Boutique will help you find a cotton treat to cool your fever. Here are some summer season trends to help you wear cotton effortlessly…. Floral: A spring time staple, the floral trend will see women being able to inject a bright kaleidoscope of cotton colour into their wardrobes. This will feature across a range of items, from dresses, skirts, tops and for the loudest statement, pants. Wear the trend in one of three ways, head-to-toe for a bold declaration of flower power, mix another print such as stripes for a fashion-forward look, or keep it simple by pairing it with plain solid colours. White: White is the new black this season and its best worn from head-to-toe. The hue will feature heavily this summer. Get savvy by pairing oversized white shirts with narrow white legged trousers. Also invest in a classic crisp cotton white shirt as it’s a versatile and effortless mainstay. Balance the all-white look with subtle gold or silver earrings, matching bangles and classic oversized clutch. Ruffles: Not to be confused with the flounce of the late 80’s, this seasons Ruffles are structured and precise, designed to frame and flatter the female form. Ruffles add flair and fun to otherwise simple dresses, skirts and tops, making them a handy item for day-to-night dressing. Ruffles make a dramatic fashion statement on their own, so they are best paired with simple, classic accessories and handbags. Monochrome: See the world in black and white with the modern take on monochrome. There’s something reassuring

about clean, simple black-and-white cotton, especially when it forms the palette of classically flattering cuts such as tailored skirts, spotted wrap dresses and wide legged whimsical trousers. Best paired with assertive accessories such as bold coloured statement jewellery to maximise the impact. Relaxed Romance: This trend has all the coyness of a blossoming summer romance with sheer tops, floaty cotton maxi dresses and light loose kaftans keeping you looking cool, relaxed and whimsical. Add to the stress free comfort of this trend by pairing with feminine clutch bags, minimal jewellery and new season crystal Havaianas for an utterly irresistible look. Lilly Pilly is in Maple Street, Cooroy.

A passion for print

QMP is the local printer that has been serving the Cooroy and hinterland districts for over 21 years. Moving with technology is the key to staying ahead in any industry and QMP has done just that. Along with traditional offset printing, QMP also offers fast short runs in full colour printed digitally for those who need a quick quality job. In more recent years QMP has embraced wide format technology which enables them to print everything from corflute and panel signs to bumper stickers, market banners, large posters and product labels cut to any shape. In a society that has gone crazy over online shopping, QMP has retained its loyal customer base. “People have come to understand that in the world of print and graphic design, there is no substitute for sharing ideas across the table and working shoulder to shoulder with those who are truly qualified to help,” said owner Allan Mulcahy. “QMP invests a real personal interest in helping people promote themselves and their businesses. That’s what sets us apart from the impersonal online rat race,” he said. QMP is proudly local with a passion for supporting local clubs and charities. A regular sponsor of Christmas in Cooroy, and events such as Fusion, Pomona’s King of the Mountain and the Noosa Show, QMP is an active and valued part of our local community.

THERE is no need to drive to Noosa or Nambour or even Brisbane to see quality films. They are already right here in Pomona! Cinema Pomona has just released its programme for the summer months. Cinema Pomona is the local hinterland Film Society and screens movies every second Tuesday at 7pm at The Majestic Theatre in Pomona. A Film Society is a non-profit group of film lovers who enjoy watching movies different to those available through the large commercial movie chains. You can get ice cream and drinks at The Majestic but not popcorn! However you do get the “Big Screen” experience; the company of like-minded individuals; and of course fabulous films! This does not mean that the movies are “highbrow” or obscure. Yes, they are usually “foreign” and have sub-titles; but they are also funny, serious, challenging, different, unique and entertaining and often a combination of all those aspects. Over the next months Cinema Pomona will

be showing films from Russia, China, Iran, Spain, Serbia, Italy, Argentina and Laos. Screening on Tuesday 29 October will be an Iranian film “Children of Heaven”. This is a delightful story about a young boy who loses his sister’s only pair of shoes and the inventiveness the pair show to hide this loss from their parents. The film society has its own website www.cinemapomona.com.au which has details of all the films and an archive of those already shown. Membership details are also available on the website. Films are for members only. Everyone is welcome to come and join prior to the screening. Annual Membership works out at less than $4 per film or $2 with a concession. Another option is 10 films of your choice per year. Casual visitors are permitted on making a donation at the door. Cinema Pomona also has an extensive library of DVDs which members can access free of charge. Cinema Pomona is pleased to be showcasing world class films as well as the world class and unique Majestic Theatre.

Cara hosts a Meet the Candidate night CARA and the Hinterland Noosa Alliance are co-hosting a MEET THE CANDIDATE NIGHT on Tuesday the 22nd of October at the Pomona Showgrounds Pavilion. Everyone is welcome. It is a special meeting for four reasons. 1. It is being held in Pomona not Cooroy 2. CARA and the Hinterland Noosa Alliance have joined forces to put this night on. 3. It is being held after closing date for candidates. 4. It is an opportunity for everyone to ask questions of all potential candidates for our new Council.

This is a very important step for the new Noosa Shire so it’s vital as many people as possible participate in this process. We’re inviting everyone to come and put questions to the candidates. The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce hosted a meet the candidate night in Cooroy October 8th. This was before the QEC closing date for nominations. Candidates do not have to declare themselves until the 17th October so CARA and HNA felt it prudent to hold a Candidate evening following the closing of nominations when we know exactly who will be standing.

Op Shop Bop fashion parade walks down memory lane IT’S on again – Saturday 19th October – Pomona’s Op Shop Bop Fashion Parade! Now in its fifth year – and getting better every time – the Op Shop Bop Fashion parade gives Pomona’s three op shops the opportunity to show off the fantastic bargains they have to offer and to have some fun into the bargain. A combined effort of the Pomona & District Community House, Options 4 U, Pomona Lifeline and Pomona Red Cross, the fashion parade raises money for local events and programs. Kicking off at 9.30am (doors open at 9.00am) at the Pomona Memorial Hall, the op shop will present clothes in one of three different categories – ‘Smart Day Wear’, ‘Leisure’ and ‘After Five’. As usual, the final run down the catwalk has a special theme – this year’s theme is ‘Retro/Vintage Wear’. “We are delighted that Emma and Jesse, owners of a new retro shop in the heart of Pomona, will be supporting the event and putting in some of their wonderful vintage clothing,” says Heather Manders from the Pomona Community House. The new shop called the ‘Sunshine Café’ as a tribute to the

shop’s previous incarnation will be opening towards the end of October. Emma says she is delighted to be able to support this great community event. All clothes on display will be for sale and a voucher giving 10% off at Pomona op shops is included in the entry price. Singer, Andrea Kirwin will be adding her own style to the morning’s activities. Morning tea is included in the cost of entry. “I come to see the great clothes and also for the best homebaked morning tea on the coast,” says Judi Gilliland, a regular to the event. SO many private events, including corporate and community dinners, very large film groups, a wedding, high school film awards all booked for October, really keeping us busy and on our toes. Thanks volunteers! Drama and Dinner After Dark We had our first ‘Drama & Dinner After Dark’ film starring Louise Brooks in “Pandora’s Box”, a startlingly modern film made before censorship classification – high melodrama at its best and we are following that with – “ Diary of a Lost Girl” represents the second and final work of one of the cinema’s most compelling collaborations: G. New viewing platform at Boreen Point

SHOP 2/3 STATION ST, POMONA - PH: 5485 2128

A NEW viewing platform has been completed by the Sunshine Coast Council at Boreen Point on the edge of magnificent Lake Cootharaba. According to Division 12 councillor Tony Wellington, it’s the perfect place to sit and while away a few hours. “The view across Lake Cootharaba towards the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park is absolutely sensational,” he said. “It’s one of the great iconic views of our region.” “And it’s worth reminding ourselves that it could have been very different. Cooloola and Noosa North Shore were at various times under threat from mining interests and property developers. Decades of effort by local and state conservationists ensured that the view across the lake remains today much as it was in pre-European times.” “This viewing platform is close to the Eliza Fraser monument that celebrates the discovery of the shipwreck survivor in 1836.” The viewing platform replaces a former Department of Main Roads

structure that was damaged in the 2010 floods. There is a new entry statement to the viewing platform using the old jetty timbers. A timber shade structure is provided with custom timber seating. The concrete viewing platform is cantilevered over a new boulder revetment wall and the structure also features recycled jetty bollards. A plaque provides interpretive information about the area. The $260,000 construction cost included a significant contribution from former SCRC Mayor Bob Abbot’s discretionary funds. “The old jetty was an integral part of Boreen Point’s history and lakeside culture,” Bob Abbot said. “This new structure has recognised that history and has enhanced the recreational and cultural possibilities for all to enjoy. It’s certainly something Boreen Point residents can use and be proud of for years to come.” With the help of some good weather, the works were completed in 13 weeks - which was less than the expected construction period.

The PCYC Emergency Services Cadets were presented with community service certificates by the Assistant Minister for Volunteers Ted Malone MP at Noosa District State High School’s Pomona Campus last month. health Plan some time IN with the girls this month for women’s cancers!

COOROY RAG

THROUGHOUT October, Cancer Council Queensland is encouraging everyone to support their work in research, support and prevention for women’s cancers by hosting a Girls’ Night In. Cancer Council Queensland Spokesperson, Katie Clift, is encouraging Queensland women to make their time with friends count in the fight against women’s cancers. “By hosting your own Girls’ Night In you, are showing your support for the one in two Queensland women, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, aunts, daughters and friends, who will be diagnosed with cancer this year,” she said. “You may even help a friend prevent cancer

by raising awareness of the choices women can make to have regular cancer screening like Pap smears and mammograms, to reduce their cancer risk. “Girls’ Night In is a great way to have fun with your girlfriends and the possibilities of how you can enjoy your night are endless!” she said. This year in Queensland, almost 4000 women will be diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancer and sadly more than 750 women will die from these cancers. For more information about hosting a Girls’ Night In this October, visit www.girlsnightin.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85.

Risk of Lyme Disease LYME disease is the fastest growing tick borne disease in the world; people are infected every year from the bacteria and other microbes that can be transmitted through the bite of a tick. The Sunshine Coast is a haven for ticks and is known as one of Australia’s hotspots. Sharon Whiteman, President of the Lyme Disease Association of Australia, and Sunshine Coast resident said, after being bitten by an infected tick people may present with mild flu-like symptoms which, if untreated, can then manifest into debilitating symptoms often leaving people unable to walk, talk or even care for themselves. It is heartbreaking to see families devastated by Lyme disease with children unable to attend school, parents unable to care for their children, losing jobs, losing homes and people dying unnecessarily. Ms Whiteman explained, “We are receiving at least 70 enquiries a week from concerned Australians looking for answers to their declining health. Most have seen multi-

ple doctors and have no answers. We are sending on average around 90 blood test kits to specialist US laboratories for analysis each month. This does not include those tests being completed in Australia. Lyme is an emerging epidemic in Australia. October is LymeLight Awareness Month with activities to be staged around Australia to raise public awareness. Lyme disease can be avoided with early diagnosis and treatment. Unfortunately, in Australia the disease is only just starting to be recognised with the general public largely unaware of the risk and only a handful of health practitioners knowing how to treat the disease. We are holding public awareness and fundraising barbeques at Officeworks Maroochydore on Sunday 13 October and Bunnings Noosaville on Saturday 26 October. We invite people to drop by to support us and become Lyme Aware. You can also learn more about Lyme Disease at the LDAA website - www.lymedisease.org.au

health All you need to know about belly fats HOW much flab you have in your abdomen has a big impact on your health. Losing fats in your midsection not only improves your overall appearance but also improves your quality of health and lowers your risk of certain diseases. Health experts all agree that abdominal fat is the worst type of fat. To understand its impact on your health, you should know first that abdominal fat comes in two different forms: the subcutaneous fat and the visceral fat. Subcutaneous fat is like the fat elsewhere in your body and while it may not pose danger to your health it doesn’t do you good either. Visceral fat however, is one that surrounds your internal organs. Visceral obesity is linked to the risk of high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, and heart disease. Unlike the subcutaneous fats, the visceral fats cells release their metabolic wastes directly to the portal circulation, which carries blood straight to the liver. As a result, visceral fat cells are enlarged and stuffed by excess triglycerides, which deliver free fatty acids to the liver. These fatty acids also accumulate in the pancreas, heart, and other organs. This results in organ dysfunction, affecting your insulin levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. Visceral fat has also been linked to dementia, and certain forms of cancer, such as breast cancer and colon cancer. Consuming too many calories can lead to an increase in your waistline. Any kind of calories – whether from fatty foods, alcohol, or oversized portions of food, can lead to belly fats. Abdominal fat is often called ‘beer belly fats’ because alcohol calories are so easy to overdo. A glass of beer for example has about 150 calories. And if you down several glasses in one sitting, you can get calorie overload. Not to mention the calorie-dense foods you eat along with your beer. Abdominal fats tend to be more common among older people because as you advance in age, your calorie requirements also decline. Older people also tend to exercise less often so gaining weight is much easier. There’s no magic bullet to reducing belly fat. It is a result of a combination of proven methods – proper diet, exercise, sleep and stress management. Reducing your calorie intake or limiting it, will reduce your chances of gaining belly fat. Avoid consuming processed foods, saturated fats and highfat meals. Instead, choose whole foods that are high in fibre and nutrients, and low in calories. Exercising is also necessary to reduce belly fats. Doing aerobic activities like jogging, cycling, swimming and running is beneficial. Here’s the good news, Make a Difference Health and Fitness can offer you help with their combined professional services of naturopathy, nutrition and fitness training. Contact Lee on 5442 6179 or 0407 597 748 or visit www.madhf.com.au for your free no obligation consultation to discuss your individual requirements.

Bowen, the back and beyond BOWEN Therapist Debbie Newman said the post graduate seminar she has just attended in Brisbane stretched attendees concepts of the way they use Bowen. New research on pain pathways and the neuroplasticity of the brain led to a belief among therapists that science is agreeing with the way Bowen practitioners consider their therapy works on the body and the brain. Neuropathic pain can become chronic pain and Bowen is thought to reduce inflammation and reduce the body’s stress levels by changing the sympathetic nervous system to the parasympathetic or resting state. This effect alone allows the body to begin

healing whilst still on the treatment table! Examining common presentations of posture to help develop a clinical impression was an integral part of the weekend. As Elizabeth Kendall stated in her book “Muscles: Testing and Function, “good posture is that state of muscular and structural balance which protects the supporting structures of the body against injury or progressive deformity”. Bowen, made famous by the late Tom Bowen of Geelong , Victoria, is all about balancing the body. Phone Deb Newman for an appointment in either Pomona or Cooroy, on 0438 861 107.

Local optometrists joins the global campaign for universal eye health LOCAL optometrists Jenny Currie and Heather McLeod of optometry@cooroy are taking part in the World Sight Day Challenge during October, inviting members of the community to have their eyes tested during this month, to raise awareness of the campaign. The World Sight Day Challenge is the largest annual global fundraising campaign to address avoidable blindness caused by uncorrected refractive error – simply the need for an eye exam and glasses. On World Sight Day (October 10), optometry@cooroy donated their fees from all their eye examinations that day to help the more than 600 million people in the world who are blind or vision impaired simply because they do not have access to an eye exam or glasses. The campaign is run by global charity, Optometry Giving Sight. “This is the second year that we have

proudly supported Optometry Giving Sight” said Jenny. “The World Sight Day Challenge is a very positive campaign because preventable blindness is a solvable problem.” “Most people are surprised to learn that just $5 can be enough to help provide an eye exam and a pair of glasses to someone living in an underserved community. Everyone can make a difference.” The World Sight Day Challenge is also featuring new ‘people power’ wristbands to encourage everyone who visits optometry@cooroy to make a donation and publicly show their support for Optometry Giving Sight. Participating is easy – simply make a monthly or annual donation in October. optometry@cooroy is located at 62 Maple St, Cooroy. Call 5442 5555 to schedule an appointment!

Irish eyes smiling in Cooroy as new housing estate takes shape IRISH eyes are smiling on Cooroy as earthworks begin at the town’s newest housing estate, Erindale Park on Lake Macdonald Drive. Surrounded by emerald green trees and wide open space, the 33 lot estate aims to be a proud monument to developers Kev and Val Kelly’s love of this community and their desire to share the joy of hinterland living with others. “In 2006, Val and I came the visit our son, who had not long moved to the area. We had a look at some local real estate and just loved it. “The decision was made and we moved later that year,” Mr Kelly said. “We have never looked back, we just love this community, the beautiful countryside and the laid-back and friendly people.” It is a long way from Northern Ireland’s County Tyrone, where Kev Kelly’s GreatGreat Grandfather packed up his family and embarked on the long journey to Australia in 1872. For more than 100 years the Kellys called Victoria home, using the family’s knowledge and skills to establish successful veggie farming operations in areas like Cheltenham, Cranbourne and Dandenong and the family still has a veggie farm at Yarrawonga just south of the Murray. But it was Kev’s son Nicholas who started the family’s most recent migration, and since then Queensland has attracted three of Kev and Val’s six children. And if their 20 grandkids had their way, everyone would live on the Sunshine Coast. “One of the only reservations we had about moving to Cooroy was leaving our kids and grandkids in Victoria … but we soon

Dave Roberts and Shane Joyce, the local boys on the job at Erindale Park found out they love it here and visit all the time,” Mr Kelly said. The Kelly’s positive experience moving to the region has been a big factor in the family’s decision to develop the 15 acre former dairy farm block on Lake Macdonald Drive. “We want to create something truly special at Erindale Park. In a few years time I would love to see the place full of families and kids enjoying their new homes and the expanse of shared open space,” Mr Kelly said. Noosa Christian College snow trip

LATE last term the NCC 2013 Snow Trip returned home from Perisher Blue, near Canberra. The trip led by Mr Bernard saw seventeen of our High School students experience the snow, some for the very first time. On the first day, students enjoyed building snow men and having snow fights. Over the next four days students hit the slopes, going to skiing or snowboarding classes for the morning and then enjoying free skiing in the afternoon.

All students were competent on the slopes by the end of the four days, enjoying the challenge of exploring the different ski runs. Nights were a great time to share the day’s experience. Our school captain Sarah Martin who attended the trip says, “The snow trip was the last school trip for me and was probably one of the best. It was filled with lots of fun on the slopes, experiencing victories and massive stacks, making for amazing memories.”

Killing it in Kingaroy

L-R Cian Jones, Sam Cameron-Hands, Alec Aird-Cardiff & Ben Cameron-Hands IMPACT Boxing put on a dominating display of boxing when they travelled to the Kingaroy RSL last week end.

“Slamin Sam” Cameron-Hands stole the show with one of his best performances to date to claim the Junior

46 kg South Burnett Title. Sam’s opponent was Jake Tovalen from the Bundaberg boxing club.

Cooroy Business Bowls

These two boys had already fought once before with Sam claiming a close points decision in that one. From the opening bell it was clear that Sam wanted that belt. Sam stalked Tovalen and attacked with accurate and powerful combinations, forcing Tovalen onto the back foot throughout the round. When the bell rang to start round two Sam was in the middle of the ring like a flash. Tovalen by now realised he was in the toughest fight of his career. Tovalen came out with both hands blazing as he tried in vain to gain control of the fight. Sam slipped under a left hook thrown from Tovalen and came up with a cracking right hand which found its mark. The referee quickly intervened and gave Tovalen a standing eight count. The boys continued to box when Sam found his mark again with a superb combination and Tovalen was down. This time the referee stopped the fight and Sam was awarded the win and the title via a 2nd round TKO. Ben Cameron-Hands,

Alec Aird-Cardiff and Cian Jones all put on crowd pleasing performances in their exhibition bouts. “All the boys have boxed extremely well. Sam lifted to a new level. He boxed with controlled aggression and was totally focussed. We are at the serious end of the year now. We have our tournament in Cooroy on Nov 2, then we have the State titles which these guys need to win to go on to the Australian titles in Perth. So its full steam ahead for the Impact stable of fighters,” coach Mark Evans said. Impact Boxing Academy will be hosting their annual boxing tournament on Nov 2nd at the Noosa District High School. This is a great chance for our community to come along and support our local kids in a family friendly environment. This tournament promises to be huge, with some of the best boxers from all over Australia already locked in and about to descend on Cooroy.. For more info call Mark on 0403 264 048.
