Community Clubs continue their battle against rising costs

President of the Cooroy Bowls Club, John Simmons, searches for options to make the Club stay viable

WITH the current trend of Sunshine Coast Sporting organisations struggling financially, and no short term forecasts of improvement to the current local and state economy, local sports clubs continue to investigate options for their future. Frequent outcomes demonstrated locally and nationally have been

the closure of many clubs. It has been an extremely difficult time for the hospitality industry, with a trend for consumers to purchase takeaways from multi national chains and entertain at home, confirmed through the growth of multi chain bottle shops, and a decrease in “club and pub culture”. Not my fave THERE are few constants in this everchanging life, but the ‘Walk Around The Block’ that begins every Spring, when the layers of my winter attire are removed to reveal what lies beneath, is one of them. I started this week. Day one, massive blister on little toe. Day two, massive blisters between toes from having to wear thongs because of aforementioned blister. Day 3 started raining half way round. Day four, picked up my mail as I walked past the letter box and the cyclonic wind ripped it out of my hands forcing me to do a 200 yard dash to retrieve it. I have been doing the ‘Walk Around The Block’ sporadically for 20 years now, giving the neighbours some light entertainment right from the early years when I was a carefree bike rider being pulled along by an insane husky dog tied to the handle bars, to the present day limping, bedraggled old woman who can’t catch her mail. They have been witness to my soul dying and my hips spreading. I did ‘The Walk Around the Block’ when I was having contractions with my first child, pushing babies in prams, dragging toddlers on bikes, calling out shrilly to pre teens to get off the road when cars are coming, and walking 15 metres behind surly teenagers who are not speaking to me because they have been forced to join in on the fun of the ‘Walk Around The Block’. They have seen me in all sorts of walking attire, including full flannelette PJs, to house shorts that should never have never left the house, the lycra years complete with the thick soled rocking shoes that were apparently going to give me calves like a body builder, and they have seen my body shape turn from fat … to fatter. So there you have it … blistered, battered and, I think, finally beaten. Next edition: My body’s complete inability November 7 to generate endorphins from exercise … not my fave! What a joy for us all, the oldies and the young, Winter is over, and spring has now thankfully sprung. The days are getting longer, the temperature is rising, In our friendly climate, that’s quite energizing. The hormones and the testosterone are stirring, The females of the species are doing some purring. A young man’s fancy is surveying the chances, A young girl’s fancy is hoping for romances. The birds are singing their joyful song, And children are happier all the day long. Get down to the beach, relax in the sand, (Don’t overdo it when you’re trying to get tanned). Do a few stretches, go to the gym, Have a good run, enjoy a long swim. Slip into some shorts, put away the Jeans, Get out of bed, chockfull of beans. This is no time to be forecasting doom, And miserably talking of troubles and gloom. The sun’s in the heavens, the clouds in the sky, The countryside is a pleasant sight for the eye. Nature knows this and celebrates spring, With flowers in bloom, and birds who happily sing. Forget all your worries, don’t think of world strife, Just be grateful for this wonderful life.

One local Club going public with their battle is the Cooroy Bowls. President John Simmons stated that it had not just been these trends and the economic climate that has created their public search for workable alternatives to their clubs situation. John says that for the last six years various options had been investigated to address the major issues resulting from the then Noosa Council not proceeding with the promised purchase of the Maple Street site after the amalgamation of the Bowls and RSL. This created a dilemma as the amalgamation only proceeded on advice from Council representatives that the Club would be able to merge onto the Opal Street site, ensuring the future of bowls. Options that have been investigated over this time, which did not come to fruition due to either zoning constraints or the economic climate, have included a Country Club concept combining the RSL, Bowls and Golf onto one site, utilization of greens at the proposed RSL Care development, and the redevelopment of the current greens to covered synthetic to allow for increased usage. Applications to, and discussions with Sunshine Coast Council and Federal and State Government representatives for what assistance they can provide, have not revealed any further avenues available. This lack of future pathways, combined with a continuing difficult economy, increases to water and electricity costs, and a continuing national downturn trend in food and alcohol sales has led John to seek a “community inspired alternative that maximizes available resources. As John points out: “We are not alone in this. Many industries, organisations and businesses are in similar situations, with Clubs much larger and with better resources than our small club needing to look at alternatives in order to remain viable. Our main aim is to find an option that gives bowls, which is the most affordable, accessible and “user friendly sport available, the best possible chance of remaining available to the community. John said that even though Bowls had suffered nationally over the last decade with downturn in numbers, this was not the case for Cooroy. “Our biggest issue is that the green is at full capacity, and the clubhouse is under utilised. Over the past years through various initiatives the game has grown, but the income from this has not been enough to cover pre-existing debt and increasing charges. A change from a grass green to artificial would have allowed extra usage and increased income; however applications for funding for this have not been successful, said John. Currently, further meetings are being held with Council and the State Government, as well as other sports clubs in similar situations. A model identical to those being discussed by local coastal bowls Clubs such as Noosa Heads and Peregian may be viable, however requires a significant commitment by governing bodies to achieve. Similarly, options to build a green on an existing sports site that has an underutilized clubhouse would maximize resources and provide a sounder business model and security to both sports, however again, this requires Council assistance. During this time, a trial at the Bowls venue will be actioned to minimize costs by increasing the utilization of volunteers and investigating methods to reduce consumption of power and water. John asks that Cooroy supports this great little venue by coming along and enjoying the fabulous food on a summer evening out in the courtyard, or a fun game of bowls. John encourages members of the community or local organisations that may have workable suggestions or suitable models that may assist in securing the Bowls future to contact him on community@cooroyrsl.com.au.

news Elves hard at work for an Aussie Christmas in Cooroy

COOROY RAG

Oi Oi Oi - Some of Cooroy’s Christmas elves trying out some Australiana costumes (left to right) Monique Vecchio, David Manktelow, David Lafferty, James Vecchio, Lochie Williams, Michael Andersen, Hayley Williams and Fiona Hutchings THE dedicated team of volunteer Christmas Elves are hard at work to make this year ’s Christmas in Cooroy celebrations the best ever. This year celebrations will take place on Saturday, 1 December and they’ve chosen the theme of Australiana for the Bendigo Bank Street Parade and the Cooroy Guardian Central Pharmacy Photo Competition. Christmas in Cooroy has become a highlight on the Sunshine Coast Festive Season calendar and attracts many newcomers to the many thousands who already join the annual celebrations. “We’ve had a really great response to this year’s theme with several floats already in production and lots of

great ideas bouncing around like iconic Australian movies, personalities and literature not to mention some classic Aussie outfits like stockmen, surfers and the ever popular Aussie flag,” event manager, Danielle Taylor explained. “We really encourage businesses and community groups to get involved in the parade as it is a great way to get some exposure for your organisation and of course it is heaps of fun. One of the main reasons this event is so popular is because everything is free - even the rides, the face painting and the Santa visit are free,” she added. Christmas in Cooroy costs nearly $50,000 to produce and it is primarily funded from busi-

ness sponsorships and a Sunshine Coast Council Festive Season grant. “We couldn’t continue to produce the event if it wasn’t for this support,” Ms. Taylor continued. “About 100 volunteers donate hundreds of hours of their time which is amazing. They are the Christmas elves that really bring Cooroy’s Christmas spirit alive. This year Stellar Conveyancing have signed up for a three year sponsorship deal to fund volunteer t-shirts for the elves to thank them for their contributions,” she said. The other aspect of Christmas in Cooroy that makes it so popular is the diversity of things on the program and the opportunities to win great prizes. There is

approximately $1,000 in cash and prizes up for grab in the photo competition and $1,400 in cash in the Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race which also raises money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Other highlights include the Bendigo Bank Street Parade, which has been generously sponsored by the Cooroy Community Bank branch for the past five years. The Wimmers East versus West Tug of War will also be a highlight as it enters its second year. Other popular attractions will be Free face painting sponsored by David Lafferty of Hinternoosa, lots of free rides sponsored by The Cooroy Rag and Hinterland Christian Centre, a fantastic fireworks dis-

play sponsored by Wimmers Soft Drinks and a terrific line up of entertainment including local band Smokin Mirrors sponsored by Luke’s Supa IGA Cooroy. Last but not least, there will be market stalls, food stalls and even a bar sponsored by Cooroy Hotel. The town is also decorated with the now iconic Cooroy Christmas Tree by Ricon Contractors as well as decorations throughout town sponsored by Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Cooroy Pest Control, Town and Country Home Rentals, Hinternoosa Real Estate and Sunshine Mitre 10. There is also a Poet’s Breakfast at Cooroy Hotel which is the only ticketed event but for a very reasonable price you get a great breakfast and hear some top bush poets. Other sponsors that deserve a mention include Zinc 96.1FM, Queensland Media Print, Cooroy Mower & ATV, Ritek Building Solutions, Bamboo Australia and Firefly Solutions who sponsor some of the less glamorous aspects of the event like insurance, printing and first aid. Christmas in Cooroy is jointly run by the Rotary Club of Cooroy and the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and is being held on Saturday, 1st December from 4pm to 10pm. The official turning on of the Christmas lights on Friday, 30 November from 6pm to 7pm. All the latest information and entry forms can be found at www.christmasincooroy. com.au.

ARTIST Ian Gunn has won the 2012 $15,000 Kenilworth Painting Prize. Ian, one of fifteen artists to make the final selection with his large scale acrylic & watercolour on canvas painting “Sense of doubt. (Reality)” was announced as the winner of this prestigious prize on Friday evening. The event was officially opened by a very enthusiastic Peter Wellington M.P. and Ian was presented with the winning cheque by Andrew Powell M.P. Minister for the Environment & Heritage. Ian acknowledged the importance of Mr. Powell`s promise that the government would continue to support this art prize, which is so vital not only for the individual artist but for the whole of the Sunshine coast community. “I had seen the other finalist`s paintings online and with so much quality artwork was really surprised, but amazingly happy, to win such a fantastic prize” Ian said. The win has come after Ian having been a finalist in this competition on four previous occasions. It has been a fantastic year for Ian, who lives in the small community of Tandur, just twenty minutes south of Gympie, he was selected as a finalist in the $10,000 Lethbridge Art Prize in Brisbane. He has also been selected as a finalist in the $15,00 Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (JADA) which is a long standing national drawing competition administered by The Grafton Regional Art Gallery in New South Wales. The winner will be announced next month. Ian‘s drawing “Weekend worship”

was chosen as a finalist from 418 entries and along with the other finalists will commence a two year tour of regional galleries throughout Queensland and New South Wales next month. “It was of course fantastic to be selected for such an important art prize but the amazing fact that the last gallery venue for the tour in March 2014 is our own brilliant Gympie Regional Gallery, is the icing on the cake.” Ian said. You can see more of Ian‘s work at The Gympie Regional Gallery where he is part of a group exhibition “Tales from the studio” opening at 2.30pm Saturday 27th October.

SUNSHINE Coast Council wants to know what your rain gauge has been telling you. Local Disaster Management Group, chair Mayor Mark Jamieson said council has met with community members in Cooroy, Daintree Estate, and Pomona recently to talk about council activities since the floods earlier in the year. “Council shares a network of rain gauges with the Bureau of Meteorology that record the amount and intensity of rain that falls during flood events,” Mayor Jamieson said. “The accuracy of the rain gauge information collected is limited to the locations where the gauges are located. “The intensity of rainfall recorded at some of the gauges early in the year has been extreme - we experienced localised flash floods completely unprecedented in the recorded history of flooding on the Sunshine Coast. “The floods demonstrated the extreme variability of rainfall from one location to the next and that’s why council would like to hear from people who keep their own records of the rain. “Council can use reliable rainfall

data from the community to supplement information it records with the Bureau of Meteorology. “All the rainfall information council has can then be used to calibrate our flood models. “Modelling information is then used to prepare flood maps and the flood maps, in turn, help locals understand the extent of flood risk on their property. “Having accurate information about flood risk is essential for good emergency planning - it’s part of the Get Ready Sunshine Coast campaign. “The more information council and the community has means the better prepared we all can be in the event of extreme weather.” If you keep a record of rainfall on your property that’s measured on a daily basis at approximately the same time – then council would like to hear from you. Tell us the location of your rain gauge, specific collection dates and the amount of rainfall measured. Data will need to be emailed in a digitised format to hydrology@ sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or contact council on 5475 7272 for more information.

To start with, look within your business for ways to improve your competitive advantage. In order to differentiate yourself from your competitors, you need to study your competition intimately. Use a simple Excel spreadsheet to document their products, services, prices and promotional offers. Pricing is something that every business has to come to terms with, and it’s important that you make a strategic decision

about where you want your pricing to sit relevant to that of your competitors. In many cases, you’ll want to be competitive without pricing yourself out of business. Use the information you collected when getting to know your competition to compare your price to others in the market place. If you’re aiming to be price competitive, look over your operational costs to determine whether you can offer promotions that match or beat your competitors’ pricing. Don’t be tempted to

price your goods or services too low though as some of your potential customers may avoid you, thinking, “You get what you pay for”. When the day comes that your customer requires your service or products you want to be the first supplier they think of to fulfil their needs. It’s all about getting your name out there so that potential customers know who you are and why you’re different. The truth about diamonds HAVE you ever wondered why one diamond, which on first appearances is the same as another, can be twice, three times or even ten times more valuable? The most obvious difference is the size of the diamond but this is not a simple matter as the size is made up of two components, the cut of the stone and the weight or carat. Diamonds are graded in the first instance by weight. However, two stones of the same weight can look quite different in size because of the way they are cut. The basic weight of diamonds is a carat, which is divided into 100 points the same as a dollar is divided into 100 cents. If a one-carat diamond is cut perfectly to reflect light and give the diamond its sparkle, it will be 6.5mm in diameter. A half-carat or 50 point diamond will measure 5.1mm. A two-Carat Diamond measures approximately

8.00mm. Diamond colour grading is an alphabetic code where A, B, and C are rarely seen. Colour gradings from D to H are virtually unable to be differentiated by the naked eye. From I the colour tends to show a yellow tinge, which gets darker as the alphabet continues. Clarity is the diamond’s DNA and as with people is different with every stone. Every diamond has some inclusion. Even diamonds that are graded as Internally Flawless have white marks that can be seen under microscopic magnification. This is a very brief explanation of how diamonds are valued. To learn more or to have a diamond sourced especially for you from our connections in Antwerp, contact Peter or Elaine at Jewellery Temptations, Shop 9, 14 Maple Street, Cooroy or visit our web site at jewellertemptations.com.au.

Local Agricultural Shows get a boost MEMBER for Noosa, Glen Elmes, welcomed almost $20,000 in grants from the State Government to give a boost to local Shows. The funding has been allocated from the grants program initiated by the Minister for Local Government. Glen Elmes said: “ It is no news that money is tight this year. However, these grants are a real vote of confidence in the important role these Shows play in local communities. The funding is designed to ensure that our communities continue to host such signature events. We know that without them, many Shows across the state would simply fold. The Government does not want that to happen.”

“The Eumundi Park Recreational and Showgrounds Association will receive $5,706 while the Noosa Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial Society will receive $13,355,” Mr Elmes stated. “Within the Noosa region, the Eumundi and Noosa Shows are a focal point in each community and I am proud of the supporting role which these grants signal. “However, the real community heroes are the members of the Show Societies who give so generously of their time and their talent, in many cases year in and year out, to provide an event to be enjoyed by local people,” Mr Elmes went on to say.

ON Thursday the 4th October, Seb Vecchio, President of the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce tendered his resignation to the Chamber executive. Seb has finally heeded his medical teams advice to cut back on extra curricular activity and concentrate on his health and business. This was a difficult decision on his part but a necessary one. Seb has been actively involved with the Chamber for the past 12 years serving as an executive member for all bar one or two years during this time. The new president will be elected at the November general meeting. In the mean time Durn Dart, vice president will be taking over the reins.

Ben May receives The Order of Australia Secondary Schools Citizenship Award NOOSA District State High School Year 12 student Benjamin May was one of 12 Queensland students awarded with the prestigious The Order of Australia Association Secondary Schools Citizenship Awards at Parliament House on Friday September 21. Ben was recognised for representing Hervey Bay in the Queensland Youth Parliament, and being involved with Cooroy’s many community ventures, including Clean up Australia Day; fundraisers for cancer, medical research and school projects; and taking on the role as founding President of Noosa High’s local Interact Club. Ben said it was Cooroy’s powerful

sense of community that inspired him to become involved in the township’s many projects and ventures. “I believe at this young age, surrounding yourself with passionate community figures and investing your time in community clubs and associations, is vital for establishing a life-long sense of leadership and community service,” Ben said. Cooroy Rotary Club member Michael Anderson has been a mentor, inspiration and good friend of Ben’s, and Ben personally thanked Michael for his support and guidance in his thank you address at Parliament House.

FOR professional artist and tutor, Don Milner, his art, painting, exhibitions and teaching (or sharing and coaching as Don calls it) all go hand in hand. Don paints every day, exhibits twice a year and teaches regularly and has now begun weekly painting workshops here in Cooroy every Friday. Turning the corner into Miva Street and stopping at the church hall, local artist and tutor, Don Milner prepares to unload his vehicle and begin the day as he sets up for another of his inspiring painting workshops. ‘Click’ music now playing softly, easel set and canvas attached, paints laid out and brushes stand tall in their holding pots. All is ready and appreciative students take a break from their painting endeavors to gather around him as he begins to explain and demonstrate more useful techniques drawn from his experience gained from more than 37 years as a professional artist. Demonstration complete and students are back at their own easels again applying the newly acquired skills just shown to them. Don relaxes for a moment, steps back from his easel and has a chance to reminisce. “Phew.!! 2012.. Been a busy year.. but I love it that way.” Reflecting, he remembers the huge rains and unprecedented flooding earlier in the year and how many of his workshops had to be postponed. “Made things a bit sticky for a while” Don said smiling. However, he still managed to teach workshops in New Zealand, Toowoomba, St George, Redcliffe, Caloundra, Pomona and many other places despite the rain. However, Don always wanted to teach locally as well and now conducts weekly painting workshops in Cooroy every Friday.

Don went on and talked about his other painting workshops. “New Zealand was fabulous and Russell in the ‘Bay of Islands’ is so very picturesque and beautiful. Every year for the past 4 years he has also conducted a week long workshop at McGregor Winter School (USQ) at the University in Toowoomba. Coupled with weekly mentoring workshop in Bli Bli for experienced artists wanting to know more and grow their art through painting. A recent Judging appointment saw Don in Burpengary adjudicating over the local Artisans Guild of Caboolture and District’s yearly art competition. Along with his hectic teaching schedule, Don also exhibits twice a year and in April held a major solo exhibition at the Rosalie Gallery near Toowoomba where his paintings achieved great success through sales and were recognized with rave reviews from visitors and critics alike. This was on the heels of his retrospective exhibition in 2010 which was also highly acclaimed by all. He still finds time to paint and is up every morning before sunrise and can often be found working late into the night in pursuit of his artistic passion. “My day is never complete unless I paint or sketch something,” said Don. All this uses up a lot of time but he manages to complete several major painting commissions each year and have his work represented in many painting competitions which have already won him awards starting with two national portrait competition wins. A selection of Don’s paintings can be viewed on his web site at www.donmilnerart.com and it is well worth a visit, or Don can be contacted via email: info@donmilnerart.com

Five money lessons Dads should teach their kids By AMP Financial Planner Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management While many dads teach their kids practical things such as how to ride a bike or change a tyre, they often forget to share their hardearned lessons about money. Just think how much more financially secure we’d all be if we could turn back the clock and start over again, knowing what we do now. By teaching their children some simple tips about money, dads can help set their kids on track for a prosperous future. Five money secrets dads should share with their children: · The magic of money – Talk to your kids about your own financial milestones such as the first big thing you saved up for. Let them know how rewarding it felt to empty your money box on the counter and buy your first skateboard or album. Also, discuss things you wish you had done. Don’t be afraid to talk about your mistakes and what you learned from them. · Dodge the debt – Mobile phones are a core part of teenagers’ social lives, but they can also be one of the biggest debt traps. Credit card debt and car loans are also common pitfalls for young people, so it’s important to flag the potential dangers with older children. Make sure they understand they need to take responsibility for their own finances. · Every penny counts – It’s a good idea to encourage kids to develop good financial habits early in life. Whether they’re still receiving pocket money or have a part-time job, encourage them to set aside money for spending, saving and investing. Also, teach your

children how to be savvy spenders by showing them how to shop around for the best price. · The bank of mum and dad – Let your kids know everyone has to contribute to the household, even if it’s by helping with the chores. While parents often want to give their children a better life than they had, it’s easy to overdo it. You can teach kids the value of money by encouraging them to save for some things themselves. After they’ve finished studying, you can also ask them to pay board if they continue living at home as young adults. · Save for the future – When older children first begin their working life, it’s tempting for them to blow their new found cash on a flash set of wheels, designer clothes or going out. Of course this is part of being young, but also encourage them to set some long-term financial goals and discuss how they might achieve them. Saving for a car or deposit for a first home can take years, so the earlier they start the better. * Chad Monroe and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd are Authorised Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd, ABN 89 051 208 327, AFS Licence No. 232706. IN recent years, many locals have come to know Fiona Hutchings and Hayley Saunders and the team at the Cooroy Community Bank® Branch. Whether it’s through the $400,000 the branch has given back to the Cooroy and Pomona communities since 2008 or just being involved in sponsoring the many community events, schools and clubs in the area, the Community Bank® branch has made a difference and changed the banking landscape forever. Now, Bendigo Bank has decided to branch out - literally! From October 16, Hayley Saunders will be based at the new Pomona Customer Contact Centre at: 2 Station Street, Pomona on Tuesdays and Thursdays (opposite Pomona Hotel). Hayley says she’s excited about offering Pomona locals a choice when it comes to their banking. “I can’t wait to get started,” Hayley said. “Bendigo Bank has a great track record of improving the banking experience because we fo-

cus on people and our communities. Many Pomona locals already bank with us in Cooroy, so now I hope to assist them with their banking needs in right here in Pomona in the form of our Customer Contact Centre. I’ll start opening two days a week and see how we go. We won’t be able to complete any cash transactions, but I can open new accounts, help arrange any lending including home loans, personal loans, business lending and credit cards. I can also set up financial planning and business banking appointments,” she added. Hayley went on to say there had been numerous requests to set up a facility in town for some time. “Our message to everyone is simple - the more support we get, the more support we can give back to the community, just as we have done as major sponsor of the Pomona King of the Mountain Festival for the past three years. Every savings or investment account, every home or personal loan, every insurance policy, and every product or

service we offer, money goes back into our community. As one of our customers, you not only make a decision that benefits you, you make one that benefits the whole community,” Hayley concluded. Hayley will be based at the Pomona Customer Contact Centre at 2 Station Street, Pomona every Tuesday from 9.00am - 2.00pm and every Thursday from 11.00am - 5.00pm and other times by appointment. Other days, she will remain based at the Cooroy Community Bank® branch. If you would like to talk with Hayley about the new Pomona Customer Contact Centre or make an appointment to discuss your banking needs, please call 0402 131 252.

news Find the right hot water system

COOROY RAG

FLARE Gas Services is a locally owned and operated business servicing the Sunshine Coast and hinterland. They provide hot water services to commercial businesses and residential home owners. Owner Russell Brennan aims to “provide good old fashioned service combined with the most up to date advice and knowledge.” Russell and the friendly team at Flare Gas specialise in hot water systems - both solar and gas. They help you select a new hot water system, install the new system and can also manage all your repair and maintenance needs. “With so much choice in hot water systems it is important to have the right advice,” says Russell. “With my years of experience helping locals I know what’s a good product for local conditions and what’s not. It’s too easy for a customer to loose money with the wrong product and wrong advice.” Russell says it is important to ask questions about what your specific needs are first before considering recommending any hot water system. “It’s your house. You know

what you want. A good tradesman will take the time to really listen to you. They will ask questions to help understand how the way you live should influence your choice of a new hot water system.” Then based on your home and lifestyle needs Russell will walk you through your best options and explain the most cost effective option to suit your requirements and tell you why it’s the best option within your budget. Russell believes in providing advice and he takes the time to explain all aspects of the different hot water systems that you could choose. And in an emergency situation where your old hot water system is not working there is no need to rush the decision about which new hot water system to choose. Russell and the Flare Gas team have temporary hot water systems that can keep your family comfortable and clean until you have decided on the right hot water system for you. Call Russell on 0422 077 394 and let him help you when you need to talk about hot water systems.

Ron Manning 12/1/43 – 28/9/12 RON Manning, formerly a long time resident of the Cooroy Motel and Caravan Park, passed away peacefully in the Nambour hospital. Ron was born and raised in Brisbane. Number six in a family of fourteen. He lived a fair while on the Gold Coast and a few years in Cairns. He decided to settle on the Sunshine Coast in Cooroy after staying with sister Marg and husband Terry Legget, who then owned the Kin Kin pub. In his working life, Ron toiled in a varied number of trades. He was on the oil rigs when they discovered the oil on the Moonee fields, but he excelled in sales. He could sell ice to an Eskimo. Ron loved to have a coffee and a chat and loved his food. His whole big body would shake and roll with laughter when he got the giggles from a good joke, and you just had to laugh along when he got going. Ron will be missed by his family and friends. A memorial service was held in his honour on October 14. Ron’s brother Russell can be contacted on 0407 644 552.

Cooroy Scouting news WELL it’s back for another term of excitement and adventure. We hope you all had a great break (for those who were lucky enough to get one!!) and are all refreshed and rejuvenated. There is plenty of activity planned for the term including hiking, swimming, craft activities, games and much more. The scouts have an especially busy term with all those attending Jamboree (which is getting closer) having a lot of extra preparations to ensure a smooth and successful trip. The Venturer scouts (aged 14 to 18) and two of our leaders had a great weekend recently earning their Level 1 Abseiling qualifications on Artificial and Natural Surfaces. They camped at Baden Powel Park in Brisbane and trained on the 18 metre tower and then travelled to Kangaroo Point to train on the Cliffs. Everyone mastered the skills and equipment and had successfully the theory. Well done to all. A great big thank you the Maroochy Masonic Lodge for recently donating $1000 worth of lightweight camping gear to the Cooroy Venturer Scouts. What a generous donation! Our Venturer Scouts now have some excellent lightweight equipment for their future adventures. Our next car boot sale is scheduled for Sunday December 2nd. For inquiries and bookings contact Christina on 5442 5968. Our end of year Christmas Family Camp is scheduled for December 8 and 9 at Camp Cooroora. More info will be coming out to scout members soon. For any other Cooroy Scouts inquiries contact our Group Leader, Elaine Williams, on 0438851474.

Permaculture Noosa ON Thursday, 18 October, 2012 from 7pm at Memorial Hall, Maple St, Cooroy (Next to RSL) Presents Anne Gibson “Practical Frugal Gardening: How to Grow More for Less”. Anne will be discussing how to use everyday materials we have in our homes and gardens to save time, money and energy. With the price of fruit and vegetables rising, many of us are trying to grow at least some of our own food needs but buying new garden beds and supplies is not always an option. There are many ways to stretch the budget including repurposing everyday items to make planters, seed raisers, fruit fly traps, fertilisers and many other useful garden supplies - all easy ways to save money.

Anne will also be demonstrating some practical ways of applying the Permaculture principles of using and valuing renewable resources, nutrient cycling and producing no waste. Also, Mark Fry “How to Make Your Own Dome”. Mark will be explaining some different ideas on how to make a dome for your garden, to be used as a chook dome or cover for the vegie patch. Permaculture Noosa meetings are FREE and open to the public. Beginning at 7pm with a Marketplace (where members sell their produce or homemade products), the guest speakers start at 7.30pm and supper (gold coin donation) will be served at 9pm. THE Rotary District 9600 has received a Rotary Foundation Grant to send a Vocational Training Team of five people to Holland for a four weeks tour, for the purpose of studying Drug and Alcohol addiction and how the Netherlands handle this problem in their population. The Rotary Club of Cooroy endorsed two applicants for the team and both were successful. The first time two members of one club have been selected to be in a training team, Tania Broadbent, a Pharmacist, Team Leader and Cath Lyndon, Wellness Consultant/Nurse, Reserve Team Leader. The leaders must be Rotarians, the other three young people in or entering careers relevant to the study discipline, and not necessarily Rotarians. The area of focus is The Hague, the international centre for law, World Health and many other organizations, and corporate headquarters. The team

will be hosted by Rotarians of District 1600. The Dutch Vocational Training Team will be here on the Sunshine Coast for our Annual Conference to be held at Twin Waters in March 2013. They will give a presentation at the conference, then off to Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Nauru, part of 9600 Rotary district. The Dutch team study how we give service in those tropical islands. The Team from 9600 will train prior to leaving Australia; some of this done at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Royal Brisbane Hospital. On the return of the team their knowledge and insight will be applied to the drug and alcohol problems in South East Queensland, where in the first half of 2012, 4,500 young women were admitted to hospitals for drug and alcohol addiction.

EUMUNDI’S School of Arts Hall is celebrating its 100th Birthday on Thursday 15 November 2012 with a re-enactment of the 1912 opening ceremony and a Centenary Ball. When it opened on November 15, 1912, The School of Arts building was considered one of the finest buildings on the Sunshine Coast. Originally two stories, it had a library and billiards hall on the lower level. Over its 100 year history, it has hosted many activities inside its walls including card nights, indoor bowls, badminton, roller skating and debutante balls. It is still in constant use today, with the Independent theatre of Eumundi using it as a base, along with activities including kung fu, yoga, indoor bowls, dance classes, and various community meetings. Manager of Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre Wendy Birrell says the re-enactment on Thursday 15 November will include a procession on part of Eumundi’s main street, Memorial Drive, and a theatre style re-enactment of the 1912 opening. The event will involve local primary school children and past and present users of the hall. “We hope to recapture the real essence of 1912,” says Wendy. “We want as many people as possible to dress-up and come along to help us

celebrate this once in 100 years event”. The Centenary Ball on Friday 16 November will be held in the School of Arts hall and will be a night that showcases the history of the 100year-old building and celebrates its ongoing place in Eumundi. “Dust off your glad rags or come dressed in your favourite era from 1912 on,” says Wendy. “There will be great live music with the Sunshine Swing Band, as well as lucky door and best dressed prizes. The ticket price includes your first drink and supper from some of Eumundi’s finest foodies.” “The ball will be a night when we can kick our heels up and celebrate its special place in our community.” Profits from the Ball will go towards the ongoing maintenance of this wholly community run building. “Many of the halls in our region are around 100 years old and maintenance of these wooden buildings is very expensive. Please support this event so we can see this fabulous hall remain part of our community for many more years,” says Wendy. For your Ball ticket details, to leave memories of the hall or to volunteer to help please contact Wendy Birrell on 5442 8762, email manager@ discovereumundi.com.au or go to www.eumundihistorical foundation.com

Helping Queenslanders for 30 years April 2013, so keep an eye on the Bureau of Meteorology website to keep up to date. The last two years were wetter than average, and this summer expect typical periodic flood events but not as widespread as previous years. Remember floods are a part of Queensland summers. It is expected to trend towards a warmer than average Spring and early Summer. There should be a rapid increase in storms in the next month with a peak in activity over South East Queensland. This will be a return to normal thunderstorm season with more hail and wind storms in the South East compared to the previous two years. Warm temperatures plus dry fuel can mean an increase in fire activity, so stay alert and heed fire warnings. Sea temperatures are average as opposed

by Carol Watkins, Deputy Local Controller, Sunshine Coast North OUR members have been kept busy with community events which usually require a lot of man hours, often starting very early in the morning and not finishing until well in the afternoon. Recent events at which we’ve assisted include the Butterfly Kids Motorbike Ride, the Noosa Classic Car Club show, Vietnam Veterans Day and Noosa Biosphere Day. While time consuming, events are important to us as it enable our member to practice some of their skills while maintaining a presence in the community. I was fortunate to attend a workshop at Council recently which included a briefing by the Bureau of Meteorology on what we can expect weather wise in the next few months. 15 October was be the official release of weather predictions through to

As always, the key message remains to prepare, and remember to ask yourself ‘can I survive 3 days with power and water?’ As the government slogan goes …‘Get Ready Queensland’. An Information Morning Tea will be held in the Lawson Shed, Pomona on Wednesday 14 th of November at 10.00am with SES and Rural Fire Brigade to help you make vital decisions. As everyone knows the Sunshine Coast, in particular Pomona, Cooran, Cooroy and Kin Kin, have experienced devastating floods in the last few years resulting in massive property damage. POMONA Railway Station Gallery is proud to hold a solo exhibition by local artist Peter Teakle. His exhibition, “My View” will run to 8 November. Peter is a self taught artist who realized in his early twenties he wanted to make a career of his art. Working by day as a boiler maker, he set up a studio in his garage and began what was to be many years of studying art and artists and developing his talent I paint what I see-what I feel when I look at a scene and try to portray it in an honest and uncomplicated way. I love light- it is the essence of a painting, highlighting colour, depth, reflection and mood. Peter’s work reflect the moods of nature, isolation and solitude. Peter is well known in the community for his murals, artwork with children at the school and backdrops for local theatre groups and has won several regional awards for his work.

THE RSL Hall Fundraising Committee has been postponed their annual ball from October 20 to the February 16 to ensure they have a full house on the night. The Hall is a community hall and is not maintained by the council. It’s a rather a complicated system of applying for grants but those grants are reliant upon a reasonable sum being raised by the community first. If we don’t support such worthwhile causes we will find ourselves with no dance halls. $50 is great value for a fantastic dinner with an eight piece jazz band with the best of big band music, lots of danc-

Looking for creative young people for Y-shop SUNSHINE Coast Council is helping young people set up shop in libraries across the Coast this summer. Young people, aged between 12 and 18 years who have created their own original craft or artwork are encouraged to apply to become part of the only young adult ‘market’ in the region. Sunshine Coast Libraries will provide the venues, mentoring and promotion of the individual Y-shops for free. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said it is a great opportunity for young people on the Coast. “We want to support the youthful creative talent that exists in the region by providing a public space for them to display and sell their craft or artworks,” she said. “This is a chance for young artists to test the market while developing basic business skills for managing a business. Last year we had a large number of young people partici-

pate in the program who made jewellery, clothes and crafts of all kinds. Last year’s YShop culminated in 11 stallholders ‘graduating’ to the Eumundi Markets, gaining immeasurable retail experience. This year we would like to increase the number of ‘Y-shops’ to showcase the creative talents within the community.” Y-shops will be open every Saturday morning in libraries across the Coast from 9.30am to 11.30am from 1 December 2012 to 19 January 2013. Interested young people need to complete a registration of interest form and provide a sample or photo of their original work. Forms are available from any Sunshine Coast Library or online at council’s library website. Selected participants will then be invited to be part of the second annual Y-shop. For further information visit council’s library website call 1300 LIBRARY (1300 542 7279).

Full Moon dance has a new groove The Verrierdale Full Moon Dance has always been an iconic Sunshine Coast event but in the past few years a new groove has taken hold. What used to be a relatively small event has now grown into one of the most happening nights out on the coast. With capacity crowds flocking to each Dance to see some of Australia and New Zealand’s hottest live acts including Oka, Tijuana Cartel, Red Eyes, Mitzi, Dubmarine and many more. But the Full Moon Dances do more than provide an outlet for that extra full moon energy. The food and beverages at each event are run by the Verrierdale Community and all bar proceeds go back into the upkeep of the Dance’s wonderfully rustic old venue, the Verrierdale Hall. Malcolm Prendeville; who has been running the Full Moon Dance since 2009 and has worked with big events such as Woodford Folk Festival, the Caloundra Music Festival, the Brisbane River Festival, The Brisbane Multicultural Festival and many more; says his goal with the Dance is to truly create a fun and relaxed atmosphere where people of all ages can come together and enjoy great live music. The next Dance is on Saturday 3rd November and the lineup certainly is a standout with Brisbane 6-piece reggae band Kingfisha headlining and support by the dynamic and hypnotic Kooii and Saritah with her vibrant, rootsy, acoustic earth grooves.

NEW to Cooroy is EyeZ For You Beauty Salon (inside Cooroy Hair Salon). Beautician, Beth Calder recently moved to Cooroy from Glasshouse Mountains. She’s the new girl on the block, but not new to beauty. “I`ve been in the beauty industry since 1994 and have been working around the coast since then,” said Beth. “After having a brief rest from the industry I’ve returned with a renewed vigour and passion especially for the recent trends focusing on eyes. I’ve always loved the concept that the best approach to beauty rather than to conceal, is to “feature focus” on our best assets and with subtle corrections we can highlight our features which distracts from our flaws and has a much more successful and natural result. Our eyes the jewels of our face and what we look at when approaching and speaking with people, so when framed perfectly with beautiful brows and amazing eyelashes, all else pales away. I absolutely love working on brows and lashes as it’s amazing how much this alone can transform our face by opening up, brightening and framing our eyes. “The other main features to focus on are lips and cheeks and combined with healthy glowing skin, very little makeup is required for a lovely natural beauty that radiates. “This feature focusing applies to all ages, but is especially effective on over 50`s. This is when a lot of ladies find beauty and applying makeup a challenge. So this is definitely a case of less is more. So I’d like to talk about how we can offer treatment to do this. “Lash Lift is a treatment where we can re-angle your eyelashes to flick upwards semi-permantly. Because our lash growth cycle is from 8 to 12 weeks this is the duration of the treatment because by then we have all new eyelashes. Combine this with the new MyScara semi-permanent mascara, you have a match made in heaven for makeup-free eyes that open up like wow! “MyScara is superior to the old lash tint because its semi- permanent but unlike tint it also adds curl, length, volume and lift. Can you imagine hav-

ing eyes like this all of the time? No `Panda eyes` any more, no need to remove mascara all of the time. Because it feels a bit like having mascara on, it takes a little getting used to but usually after a few days, and your second MyScara you will be hooked for life. There are a few more details you need to know about this treatment so give me a call or pop into the salon for a chat. “Also very soon we will be adding Lash in a Flash Extensions if you want more length or volume and combined with MyScara on your bottom lashes only, is also a wonderful combination especially for a special occasion. So keep that in mind all you school leavers who are preparing for your formal, brides or anyone wanting to treat themselves. “We also hope to offer eyebrow threading very soon, in the meantime we do stencilling which is combined with waxing and gives amazing definition and lift and is like a mini eyebrow lift without surgery. Imagine how great you’re going to look with all of these options. We also will be offering regular waxing and tinting if that’s what you prefer which still looks incredibly great. “I can care for your skin too with facials using a natural but very active product call CShe. When I say we, I’m referring to my associate Clare who will be working with me. Clare is a skilled nail technician and both of us can offer the beautiful natural feeling, glossy genuine Shellac nail system. In the near future she will be adding to that the most beautiful and natural tan available, Tuscan Tan. We both look forward to meeting you, so come in soon or call EyeZ For You Beauty Salon on 0400 591 299.”

VERNOICA Garrett is a Holistequine Life Coach, and will be holding 2 day workshops on October 27th & 28th (Cleaning the slate to then “walk the talk”); and November 24th & 25th (Walking our truth to create a new reality). “If our life is not going to plan it is often because we are unknowingly sabotaging our efforts with old programs and beliefs from the past … our Holistequine life coaching horse “reads” this “information” sitting in our subconscious mind, and as we too reassess it as “energy” we stop taking it personally and easily clear it.....we then just need is to be shown how to develop good communication skills, the basis for all successful relationships. “When we appreciate that about 90% of the way we interact with others is through NON verbal communication then it is obvious we need to find better tools if we want to be happy. This especially applies to relationships between men and women, here our horses teach us to respect the differences between the male and female brain and we learn to stop being influenced by our emotions. “Without realising it we are all sensitive to these non verbal “cues” from others, for ex-

ample we may “feel” anger or frustration coming across from someone but because it sits unexpressed within their “energy field” and they may be “saying” something else we confused and don’t know how to deal with it “This subconscious language includes facial expressions, tone of voice, posture etc and represents the true feeling, intention and sincerity of a person i.e. the cues we really respond to...believing not so much with what people say. “When we introduce these new skills ourselves we are then on the front foot to avoid confrontation, we know what the other person is really communicating and as a result we build better relationships generally. “The Holistequine horses show us that the key to success is to balance the head with the heart, logic with unconditional love “It is not always easy to “say what we mean and mean what we say”, to be 100% confident that what we “want to get across” is going to be “heard” by others in a positive way and not misinterpreted as something else. Conflicts arise because we all “interpret” words differently through our own personal emotional filters. “Horses are masters of non verbal communication; they need these skills to survive. They demonstrate clearly how we too can trust this new way of “walking our higher truth”, feeling safe in the knowledge that we have “expressed ourselves” with the right amount of love AND authority....knowing that we have imparted our needs through our new internal Self worth and that our point of view is respected. “Our problem goes as we clean our own

The benefits of weight training on cognitive function THERE are many benefits of weight training for seniors including improved bone density, improved strength plus improved health for those with type 2 diabetes or those at risk of type 2 diabetes. Now, according to a new Canadian study, strength training has also been shown to help reverse memory loss in elderly women in the early stages of dementia. The six month study involved 86 women between the ages of 70 and 80 who had probable “mild cognitive impairment”. After weight training, researchers used MRIs to show increased blood flow to areas

of the participants’ brains that were associated with memory and other cognitive functions like attention, problem solving and decision making. The study also found that aerobics-based activity did not show the same mental health benefits as weight training although this type of activity still has many other health positive effects. If you are interested in joining an older adults exercise class, Lucy Cloonan has classes running at Miva Street Church Hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10.30am. health Managing cholesterol with exercise CHOLESTEROL is an essential component of cell membranes and is needed for many bodily functions, such as the production of hormones. It is produced in the liver when foods containing oil and fat are digested. Cholesterol in the blood is found in two types of particles - low density lipoproteins (LDL) which is the ‘bad’ cholesterol because it contributes to heart disease by narrowing the arteries; and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol which is the ‘good’ cholesterol as it keeps LDL levels in check. High cholesterol is major health concern affecting approximately half of all adult Australian’s. It is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke and is a ‘lifestyle’ disease that’s directly attributable to diets high in animal fats and/or trans fats. High cholesterol is totally preventable with a healthy diet. If you already suffer from high cholesterol levels treatments may include dietary changes, plant sterols and stanols, exercise, weight loss, avoid smoking and medication. While exercise itself does not burn off cholesterol like it can with fat tissue, when exercise is of a sufficient volume it can significantly reduce triglycerides and stimulate several metabolic enzyme systems in the muscles and liver to convert some of the cholesterol into the “good” HDL-cholesterol. For many people with cholesterol disorders the first choice of therapy is dietary modification. In general, reducing high-glycemic carbohydrates reduces triglycerides, and reducing saturated and trans-fat foods decreases the “bad” LDL-cholesterol. If LDL cholesterol is high enough, dietary therapy is often supplemented with cholesterol-lowering drug

therapy. Exercise is of tremendous benefit when used in combination with either of these two forms of therapy. For those who maintain a frequent and sufficient level of exercise, it is possible that their GP will reduce their cholesterol-lowering medication and in some cases stop it altogether. In general, for exercise to significantly lower cholesterol levels, a relatively high volume of exercise is recommended. Try to get at least 30 minutes of a moderate-intensity activity such as brisk walking on most, and preferably all, days of the week. You can do the activity all at once or break it up into shorter periods of at least 10 minutes each. Moderate-intensity activities include playing golf (walking the course, instead of riding in a cart), dancing, bowling, cycling (8km in 30 minutes), as well as gardening and house cleaning. More intense activities include jogging, swimming, doing aerobics, or playing basketball, football, soccer, racquetball, or tennis. As a result, fat weight loss tends to be associated with increases in HDL-cholesterol (good) and reductions in total cholesterol (good) and LDL-cholesterol (bad) levels, especially fat lost around the waist and abdomen. If you want help to prevent or treat high cholesterol, Make A Difference Health and Fitness can help. With a qualified Naturopath and a Personal Trainer on staff they can work with the treatment your doctor has prescribed to attack your cholesterol problems. Give them a call on 5442 6179 or visit their website at www.madhf.com.au for more information.

To heat or to ice? That is the question ONE of the common questions that we are asked as physiotherapists is whether you should apply heat or ice to an injury. While both have their place, it is important to understand the effect that they have on the body in order to apply the correct method for the injury. Acute injuries are sudden, often traumatic injuries that result in pain, swelling, inflammation and sometimes redness. They most often result from some sort of impact or trauma such as a fall, collision or sprain. Chronic injuries however, are often intermittent or slow to develop and often less intense in nature. They can be due to overuse or from poor healing of an acute injury. Ice is the best immediate treatment for acute injuries as it reduces swelling and pain. Ice works by causing vasoconstriction or narrowing of the blood vessels which reduces bleeding from the internal site of injury. Ice should be used for the first 48-72 hours post injury to reduce

inflammation. The ice should not be applied directly to the skin and should last no longer than 20 minutes per application. You need to leave 20-40 minutes between applications to prevent damage occurring to the tissues. Ice can also be used when a chronic injury has been aggravated eg. a runner with chronic shin splints has increased pain after a run. Heat is generally used for more chronic injuries, or where there is no inflammation or swelling. Stiff, sore muscles and joint pain often benefits from ice, especially neck or back pain. Heat helps to relax muscle spasm, increase the blood flow to the area and improve the elasticity of the connective tissues. There are many commercial heat packs available for purchase now, with some being able to be used for heat or ice therapy. If you have any doubts about what to use for your pain, contact Rebecca Steele at Hintractive Physio on 5442 5556.

Temptations farewells Sonja AFTER almost six years volunteering at Eden Rehabilitation Centre’s Temptations coffee shop, Sonja Smith has decided to step aside at the end of next month and take some time out for herself. Volunteering her services four to five days a week, Sonja’s tirelessness and dedication has seen the hospital cafe flourish. Staffed solely by volunteeers, Temptations now serves light meals such as burgers, sandwiches and wraps as well as coffee and cake, all at very reasonable prices. All money made from the cafe goes back into providing services at Eden. Sonja has made some great friends during her time at Temptations and she will be sorely missed. Thank you Sonja, we wish you well!

We are what we eat … well, duh! (Inspired by the documentary ‘Food Matters’) WE’VE all heard it. When it comes down to it, we all know it. Every traditional indigenous group practices it. And if you take it seriously, if only for a brief time, the benefits and outcomes simply can’t be denied. So why have we become so ignorant and destructive when selecting what we put in our mouths? A great quote to think about is: “With so little true free choices left in our society, the one thing we have total freedom over is what we eat and drink”. And with food literally being the construction blocks for every cell in our body, surely we should think a bit harder about what we’re expecting our bodies to, not only thrive and heal with, but in the long run; to simply survive on. The management of our health has changed drastically in modern times, to the point where instead of seeing a Doctor that is extremely competent, knowledgeable and wellpracticed in nutrition and it’s role in maintaining good health, we are pushed to interact almost solely with Medical Doctors, who are trained in Medicine and prescribe Medicines, and have little to no formal training in any nutritional studies whatsoever. tributed to adverse reactions with pharmaceutical drugs. And those aren’t overdoses, those are prescribed medications taken as directed by qualified physicians. Car accidents are responsible for over 30,000 deaths in the U.S per year and there are billions of dollars aimed at increasing road safety and reducing fatalities, yet very little efforts from any governing body to educate and inform people of the dangers of pharmaceutical drugs and what they’re alternative options are. It is actually illegal in this country, and most other ‘developed’ nations, to solely treat Cancer with anything other than Surgery, Radiation or Chemotherapy, and patients are forced to seek help overseas in places such as Mexico for alternatives. Did you know that by even steaming your vegetables for 5 minutes reduces the vegetables nutritional value by around 40%!!! So for your sake, your children’s sake, your wallet’s sake AND the planet’s sake… try your best to include as many raw foods in your diet as possible and please, limit the amount of processed, preserved food as well as sugars and carbohydrates you consume. Your body will thank you for it! For more information or to book in for a consultation please phone Maple St Acupuncture & Natural Medicine on 5442 5526.

Women overlooking heart & bone health at menopause

ACCREDITED BOWEN THERAPIST Dip BT

BOWENTHERAPY GENTLE PAIN RELIEF

While women going through menopause worry about hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes and disturbed sleep, they are forgetting two important areas of health also affected by menopause – their heart and bone health. The risk of heart disease and osteoporosis increases naturally with age – but those risks greatly accelerate around the time of menopause. Many women are preoccupied with hot flushes and night sweats and trying to work out what is going on with their body as it changes during this time of their life, so they don’t focus on how menopause can affect their bone or heart health at all. This is definitely a concern because we know there are links between falling levels of oestrogen and heart disease and bone density loss. Heart disease is the number one killer of Australian women – on average it kills 29 women each day. With Australian women enjoying a longer lifespan, taking care of heart and bone health in midlife is increasingly important. Find a good GP, book a long appointment and discuss your treatment options at menopause. For example, you need to know if HRT is right for you and it’s important to ask about the alternatives. Look at your relationship with your GP as a partnership for your health decisions.

Entertain, relax & enjoy or rent it out! OFFERING all the charm of yesteryear with beautiful modern touches, this stylish three bedroom home really captures the relaxed Queensland lifestyle. Set on 1012m2 this stylised Queenslander displays beautiful polished hardwood timber floors (which are an absolute showstopper) flowing throughout the home and combined with crisp neutral tones, open plan living areas and plenty of light and space to give this home a real wow factor. The main bedroom has separation from the others and offers walk in robe, ensuite and plenty of light through large casement windows. Whilst the other two bedrooms are of generous size and have their own special character. A modern kitchen is centrally located and acts as the perfect hub, whether you are enjoying a family dinner or entertaining friends.

Spacious air-conditioned living areas flow to an expansive outdoor entertaining deck, just a fantastic area that enjoys a north easterly outlook and looks out over a nature reserve to the rear of the property, kangaroos, wallabies and birdlife at your backdoor. A fully fenced back yard creates privacy and a safe and secure place for children to play carefree. Under the home you will find a large secure storage or workshop area, laundry and potential to further expand on this already generous home. Currently rented for $330 per week with great tenants in place – a great investment property! Priced at $325,000, call Michael Robinson from Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland for further details on 0431 865 616 or at the office on 5485 1788, or call into the office at 8 Reserve Street, Pomona.

KAREN and Brett Evans of Cooran, landed two tickets to the AFL Grand Final in Melbourne earlier this month. The pair was chosen as the lucky duo after participating in the Bupa Family Challenge, which helps parents and children learn about being active and making healthy food choices. More than 9000 families around the state were invited to take part in the competition.

The special promotion supported this season’s launch of the Bupa Healthy Community AFL Program, with more than 117 football clubs across the state receiving essential footy equipment and resources for junior players.
