Tip-toe through the Noosa Hinterland

THE Great Noosa Trail Walk 2016 held on the first weekend in October was a huge success with tickets booked out months in advance. This year over a 150 walkers and volunteer guides tip-toed through the Noosa Hinterland, taking only pictures and leaving only footprints while on the trails. They experienced some of the very best of Noosa Hinterland’s nature, culture and communities. Event founder, Shaun Walsh said the event was an exceptional opportunity to inject a bit of extra life

into the smaller towns along the way. “Over the three days, walkers stop at Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran and Kin Kin and we conservatively estimate that over $40,000 is injected back into the local economy to businesses and community groups.” The Great Noosa Trail Walk prides itself on being a safe and enjoyable way for people to experience the quiet beauty of the Noosa Hinterland with volunteers and trails guides scattered along the tracks to make sure walkers didn’t lose their way. As well as guides and volun-

teers the Great Noosa Trail Walk offered a shuttle service that transported walkers’ heavy luggage and camping gear to the evening’s campsite, freeing up walkers so they could really enjoy their time and stop and smell the roses. The trail boasts a beautiful scenic walk with sights beyond compare, and thanks to the volunteers who worked tirelessly over the long weekend, walkers of every fitness level and any profession were able to see every bit of it. Noosa Mayor, Tony Wellington joined the walk on Day One with fellow

Celebrate

councillors Ingrid Jackson, Jess Glassgow and Joe Jurisevic. “The Great Noosa Trail Walk is a terrific adjunct to our local events calendar, and a wonderfully inventive way to showcase the incredible offerings of our Noosa hinterland: not just the natural wonders, but our superbly friendly rural villages as well,” said Cr Wellington. “One of my favourite spots on the trail is the Cootharaba Lookout at the top of Wahpunga Range,” said Councillor Wellington. This stopping point offers a 180 degree panorama of the coast, from the Cooloola sand mass in the north, Lake Cootharaba stretching across the middle, and Noosa Heads in the south.” The planning for Great Noosa Trail Walk 2017 is already underway with many walkers chomping at the bit to pre-order their tickets which will be released shortly. news Fight back against mosquitoes in your backyard AFTER the recent rainfall, Council is urging residents to help keep mosquitoes under control in their backyards. Noosa Council Waste and Environmental Health Manager Wayne Schafer said the wet weather and warm temperatures made for ideal breeding conditions. While Council will start aerial treatments in early November to treat known local mosquito breeding sites, such as tidal areas and swamps, residents could help put the brakes on mosquitoes by removing fresh and stagnant water from their yards. “Some mosquitoes breed efficiently after rainfall, especially the common banded mosquito (Culex annulirostris), the most common in south east Queensland,” Mr Schafer says. “This mosquito breeds in shallow freshwater pools as well as in grassy drains and depressions in rural areas or suburbs with

open space, which includes most of Noosa Shire. These mosquitoes are known to carry diseases which can be transmitted to humans and pets.” Mosquitoes will breed in almost any site or container holding water, in most locations including in backyards. Places they breed include: unused tyres, bromeliad plants, water features, gutters, ponds, bird baths, neglected swimming pools, unscreened rainwater tanks, buckets and containers, blocked roof gutters, boats, pot plant bases and drains. Mr Schafer urged all residents to regularly flush out ponds and bird baths and remove areas where stagnant water could collect to eliminate breeding sites. He also urged the use of repellents, light clothing to cover arms and legs, and keeping screen doors and windows closed.

Council to meet in Cooroy NOOSA Council will hold its Ordinary Meeting in Cooroy in October, to give local residents a chance to meet the mayor and councillors and see how Council makes its decisions. The Ordinary Meeting – the last meeting in each meeting cycle – will be held at Cooroy Sports Hub, 5 Opal Street, Cooroy, on October 20. “We’ve held several of our Ordinary Meetings in different parts of the Shire since 2014 to make it easier for residents in those areas to attend and see how Council works,” says Mayor Tony Wellington. “This Council has decided to continue the

tradition established by the previous Noosa Council of taking our meetings to the people. It’s also an opportunity for residents to meet with their elected representatives. There will be time before and after the formal meeting for residents to chat with councillors.” All of the elected local government representatives will be present at the Cooroy Ordinary Meeting. Senior Council staff will also be in attendance. The actual meeting starts at 6pm, with meet-and-greet sessions beforehand from 5pm and after the meeting from approximately 6.30pm.

Proudly Sponsoring Cooroy

Geoff Edwards with the organising committee trying out some movie costumes for the Bendigo Bank Street Parade EACH and every year Christmas in Cooroy brings a little extra fun to the days leading up to Christmas. One of the main attractions is the Bendigo Bank Street Parade where around 30 community groups and businesses come together to produce a huge array of decorated floats and costumes galore. The theme for this year is ‘The Movies’ and the some of the organising committee got together this week to try out a few costume ideas including the Man from Snowy River, Scream, Gandalf from The Hobbit, King Arthur, the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Dobby from Harry Potter, Lancelot and Belle from Beauty & the Beast.

“The Bendigo Bank Street Parade is truly a spectacular part of Christmas in Cooroy and over 10,000 people line Maple Street to catch it. There are always lots of giveaways and lollies handed out into the crowds and people of all ages are just amazed at how great the floats look. People are always amazed that everything at Christmas in Cooroy is free and that couldn’t happen without sponsors like Cooroy Community Bank Branch,” said event manager, Danielle Taylor. “We are always pleased to be involved with Christmas in Cooroy as it’s so much fun and it really puts Cooroy on the map during the festive season. But the real reason we continue to

be major sponsors is that it gives so much benefit for the community. It is a showcase of great community spirit with everyone working together to produce something quite special,” said Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards. There is still time to be in the Bendigo Bank Street Parade, entry forms are available on the website – www.christmasincooroy. com.au. It’s a great way to get some exposure for your community group or business and it’s a lot of fun. The official lighting of the Ricon Christmas tree on Friday 2 December and the Christmas in Cooroy festival on Saturday 3 December have become a tradition for many families from Noosa and further.

Vacation Care takes off with a special visitor! VACATION Care began with much excitement for the children of Cooroy Outside School Hours Care (COSHC) with a visit from Lachlan Smart. The children have followed Lachie’s journey as he became the youngest person to circumnavigate the world solo in a single engine plane. The children’s connection with Lachie began when they started following his flight into the record books in June. A wall display of photographs and maps kept children apprised of Lachie’s location and his flight path. Lachie even made the time to answer questions the children sent him from halfway across the world! Lachie is hoping his adventure will encourage people, young people in particular, to set goals and work hard to achieve them and to follow their dreams. To show Lachie how the children had taken his message to heart, the children wrote their dreams onto a piece of

Lachlan Smart was a hit with the Cooroy Outside School Hours group paper before folding it into a paper plane. The children ‘launched’ their dreams by throwing their paper planes high into the sky during Lachie’s visit. After Lachie shared some of his experiences and answered the children’s many ques-

tions, the children presented Lachie with a special gift. After hearing the Mayor of Niagara Falls presented Lachie with the Key to the City, and how Mayor Mark Jamieson presented him with the Key to the City of the Sunshine Coast

upon his arrival home, the children presented Lachie with the key to COSHC hearts! A book of messages and drawings was also given to Lachie to show him how much he had come to mean to them. The children look forward to continuing

their friendship with Lachie and hope this inspirational young man’s determination and bravery encourages others to follow their dreams! For more information please visit www.wings aroundtheworld.com.au

I didn’t mean to get that close! Did you read the sorry tale, of this former politician, Who turned up in a war zone, on an unauthorised expedition. He claimed he was trying to contact a friend, a mate, Although he stood a chance of meeting with his fate. Apart from seeking his mate, he wanted to get a ‘feeling’, Of the area, the environment, or something equally appealing. I’m sure we could have helped with a mate if he came down to the RSL, And not only that, talk some sense into him a well!! War is not a travel holiday, a fantasy, a dream, When you get up close, things aren’t really what they seem. The Foreign Office tell you to stay away from places like Iraq, You’ll get no brownie points just a fat black mark. If you go there, and get mixed up in an affray, Remember that incoming enemy rifle fire, has the right of way!!

If a Government is good enough to give you all you want, remember it is also big enough to take it all away. Jim Dunstan

news Council to set 2026 zero emissions target Connecting with our community

COOROY RAG

Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy NOOSA Council aims to achieve its zero emissions goal by 2026 under a new strategy it is set to adopt this month. The draft organisational strategy follows a facilities and operations audit by Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE) experts Dr Stephen Bygrave and Michael Lord. “That audit gave us a baseline from which to set an achievable, yet ambitious, target,” says Mayor Tony Wellington. “BZE’s audit confirmed that our landfill and the way we manage waste are our biggest greenhouse gas contributors. “This is why Noosa Council is taking steps to increase recycling and reduce the amount of organic waste that ends up in landfill. Organic waste produces methane as it decomposes. “Currently we flare – or combust – the methane before it is released into the atmosphere. While this reduces its environmental impact by a factor of 20, powering the flaring process also produces greenhouse gas. So the less we need to flare, the better.” Cr Wellington said Council was investigating alternatives to flaring, including the potential to power garbage trucks from landfill gas. “This is happening overseas and our waste staff are talking with stakeholders about how we might trial something similar as part of our new waste

contract,” the Mayor said. “In line with Council’s Towards Zero Waste initiative, the new waste contract will also provide an expanded garden waste collection service to divert more organic waste from landfill. This will see a three bin system introduced across our urban areas.” Council is currently working with Unitywater to develop a way of creating useful compost from organic waste, sewage sludge and commercial food waste. “Of course there are many other actions that Council will need to take as we head towards our 2026 goal,” Cr Wellington said. “After waste, the next highest emitter of greenhouse gases are our Council buildings. “The next stage in this process will be to detail a set of actions to ensure we achieve our 2026 zero emissions target. “That action plan will look at how, for example, we reduce emissions from our facilities and also street lighting. “This is complicated by the fact that most of our streetlighting is actually owned by Energex. So we’ll be holding discussions with them about transitioning to LED ‘smart’ lighting.” Council hopes to ratify its Zero Emissions Noosa Strategy on October 20.

ANOTHER successful networking night hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce was held on October 6. These networking nights are a great way to connect with other local businesses and find out what we can offer each other. Great job chamber!

LIVING in the Noosa hinterland is about as good as life gets, I reckon. The people, our towns and the regional lifestyle we enjoy in Noosa Shire is one of our countries’ best kept secrets. Good communication is often one of the signs of a healthy community. Making sure a community supports its local businesses is important too. Our Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank is locally owned by our shareholders. It has now returned more than $600,000 to local schools, clubs, organisations and events in the past few years. How local? To use our latest example we’re supporting the inaugural Noosa International Film Festival from 3-6 November along with our Tewantin Community Bank branch. Pomona and Cooroy will both be hosting some of the more than 140 films on offer. If you’re into film, get along to those or some of the other venues in Noosa and Eumundi and get

behind another great festival that only adds to where we live. Why are we supporting this festival? Because that’s what we do. Through our customers’ banking we generate profits that go into supporting recipients just like NIFF. It’s why our team loves coming to work each day and why we’re growing with our community. Through our close community relationships, our Cooroy Community Bank branch and Pomona agency combine to give our towns a real say in their own future. We believe successful customers and successful communities create a successful bank - in that order. As we work to

provide banking products and services for our customers, we consider the bigger picture. So, if you’re interested in banking where the customer is connected to the bank, give us a try. We have a full range of products just like any full service bank and you’ll become more aware of work we do where it matters most. Our team will be more than happy to share more of our story with you and deliver the right advice and the products you need. Please feel free to drop into the branch or call me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy), 5485 1786 (Pomona) or you can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

How do I care for children and ageing parents? Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* BUDGETING, planning and accessing government entitlements could go a long way both financially and emotionally. As Australia’s population continues to age, more people are joining what’s been coined the ‘sandwich generation’—a group wedged between the needs of their kids and their older parents. If it’s something you’re juggling at the moment, or want to prepare yourself for in the future, here is some general information and a few tips, so you don’t lose sight of your own goals along the way. What is the sandwich generation? The phrase sandwich generation refers to people who are effectively ‘sandwiched’ between supporting ageing parents and their children—physically, emotionally and financially1. Coupled with work commitments and saving for retirement, it can be a tricky balancing act, and it’s possible some may have to stay in the workforce longer to meet

added financial obligations2. What triggered this scenario? Australia’s population is ageing Australians are living longer3. To put it into perspective, around 40 years ago, the number of people over age 85 was 80,000 and in another 40 years that number is projected to reach around two million4. This means that more individuals are helping parents who are ill and need assistance with daily tasks, with projections that the total cost of aged care in Australia will increase to $290 billion by 20555. Children are leaving the nest later Nearly one in four young adults age 20 to 34 continue to live at home, and of those who have moved out, more than half have returned home within two years6. Reasons for this include the increased cost of living, housing affordability issues, growing education debt, travel aspirations early in life, as well as many young people getting

married and having children later in life7. What are the costs? Feeling time poor and slightly out of pocket isn’t unusual for members of the sandwich generation. Many may be helping elderly parents with odd jobs and aged care costs, while also supporting children with things like schooling and accommodation, and, if they’re a bit older, possibly the purchase of big-ticket items, such as a car or their first property. In fact, estimates show baby boomer members of the sandwich generation are forking out $23 billion a year to assist elderly parents and adult children. And as far as time goes, they’re spending 109 hours helping their kids and 250 hours helping older relatives each year8. How can I manage or prepare myself? To live a modest lifestyle in retirement, you’ll need more than what the Age Pension can provide on its own, and more still if you want to live a comfortable

lifestyle9. If you’re caring for children and parents, here are some tips, so you can balance their needs, as well as your own. Look out for yourself and keep site of your future plans. • Create a budget and set financial boundaries • Keep saving and maintain control of your debt • Try to avoid dipping into your super savings • If you need help managing financially, please call us on 07 5447 7740 • Take time out for yourself and don’t lose track of your own goals • Get your children involved and teach them good habits • Start a savings fund early on - whether it be for education, a car or deposit for a property • Teach your children how to save and be financially independent • Set limits and make sure they’re chipping in financially, and domestically if they’re at home • Reassess the situation together every now and then to see how things

Now OPEN at NOOSA CIVIC

are working. • Communicate with your parents and don’t be afraid to seek assistance • Share the load with other family members • Find out if your parents are eligible for government benefits • See what help and care assistance is available • Communicate so you’re aware of their estate planning wishes • Should they need fulltime care, try to plan for this well in advance Taking care of others can be a wonderful thing, but don’t forget about your own needs along the way, and to take some time out every now and then. If you would like to discuss your situation, please call us on 07 5447 7740. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004 Authorised representatives and credit representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706. Butter Factory Exhibition: Connected

Victoria Fitzpatrick - 'High Tea' ‘A sparkling blue and white jewel, laced with swirling veils of white like a small pearl in a thick sea of black mystery.’ This is how astronaut Edgar Mitchell who died earlier this year described our earth from space in

1971. In the 45 years since then we have finally begun to realise how inextricably we are connected to everything in the environment of this fragile earthball, to each other and to the whole of the universe.

This is what twenty local artists have attempted to depict in a new exhibition at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre running from 28th October to 30th November. It is entitled ‘Con-

nected’. All artists are from the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and members of Arts Connect Inc. They have painted, drawn, moulded, printed, digitally designed and photographed their world in all its intricate and amazing connections. The creators of these 80 works are Anne GentrySmith, Annie McIntosh, Cathy Lawley, Deann Cumner, Fiona Groom, Gary Bell, Heather Gall, Jacky Lowry, Jan Roebuck, Judi Parkinson, June McCotter, Judy Berlak, Kim Murray, Leisa Gunton, Margie Lipscombe, Miles Allen, Nita Lester, Steve Parish, Victoria Fitzpatrick, Wayne Smith. Come along to the launch on Saturday 29 October at 1.00pm and meet the artists or on a guided tour with artists on Saturday 5 November at 11am and to artists’ workshops at the Centre. dining & entertinment International Film Festival comes to the hinterland

COOROY RAG The hinterland will play a part in the upcoming Noosa International Film Festival from 3 to 6 November with multiple screenings taking place in Cooroy, Eumundi and Pomona. Cooroy will feature with a special Ecoflicks event on Sunday 6th at the Cooroy State School Hall screening official selections from the short film competition as well as the premiere of the 2016 release documentary, SEED: The Untold Story. Ecoflicks began in 2010 as an initiative of the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association to encourage young filmmakers to share stories about the environment through film. This year, the Noosa International Film Festival took Ecoflicks global and has attracted filmmakers from our local region as well as internationally. Sunshine Coast young filmmakers, Emelia Ebejer and Zachary Daguiar will screen their film Forest Not Freeway. The screening will also include a presentation of prize awards to competition winners. For the second half of the Ecoflicks event, NIFF will screen environmental

documentary, SEED: The Untold Story. The film features a combination of interviews, archival footage, and animation to tell a compelling narrative about the seed industry. By the end of the film, viewers will understand the magic of seeds and the importance of growing one’s own life force. Festival Director, Peter Chenoweth encourages filmgoers to experience as much as possible. “The Noosa International Film Festival has something for anyone who enjoys film and it was our intention to bring the festival to the whole Shire. In doing so, we have created a different experience at each venue. Heading to Eumundi, short films will feature all weekend at the historic Eumundi School of Arts Hall. The festival received over 200 short film submissions from 31 countries and will screen the top 132 short films across the Festival’s venues. “The creativity of the short films is outstanding and with an average of 10 shorts per session, there is a good mix of genre,” says Peter. In Pomona, The Majes-

tic Theatre will screen two short film sessions during the Saturday and then the 1920 classic silent horror, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, directed by Robert Wiene will screen with traditional pianist on Saturday evening. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is considered one of the first true horror films, and is still thought to be one of the best. The Noosa International Film Festival will run at select venues in Noosa, Eumundi, Cooroy and Pomona from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 November. With an all premiere lineup of new release films from Australia and overseas and the attraction of internationally-acclaimed filmmakers, it was easy for well-known community supporters, Bendigo Bank to get behind the festival. Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards says the sponsorship is a great fit. “This is precisely what our Community Bank branches in Cooroy and Tewantin are all about - banking profits going back into our community. It’s because of the support locals’ show us that we can announce sponsorships as important

SEED: The Untold Story. as this one with the Noosa International Film Festival,” Geoff said. To explore the full festival program and to purchase your tickets, visit www.niff.com.au.

The Hub is modern, spacious and airy and is equipped to cater for boardroom size private meetings, daytime seminars and conferences, to lavish evening functions. Noosa Catering have moved their base from Noosa and will operate exclusively from the Hub kitchen. Noosa Catering is a well-established, top

end catering business serving prestigious out of house functions throughout the Sunshine Coast. “Their decision to relocate from Noosa to Cooroy is further evidence of the growing recognition of this town’s ability to attract viable businesses from the coast,” said Ron. Mathew Conquest and his team have also undertaken to assume responsibility for the catering requirements for the Hub. When booking a function at the Hub, Mathew will tailor a package to suit your food needs from platters to seated dining and Ron will be offering drinks packages to ensure your function stays within your budgeting requirements. The Hub is open now for bookings so make sure you get in early and book in your Christmas function to avoid disappointment. Phone 5472 0907.

Young people left out of fundraising antics The Cooroy Scout Group will leave its young people behind for a night of adults-only fundraising on Saturday, 5 November 2016. The fundraising event, which is hosted by the Cooroy RSL, is the ever-popular Drag Queen Bingo, which has been a huge hit with the Cooroy community. Cooroy Scout Group President, Sally Alexander, said that this event has the potential to be the Cooroy Scout Group’s major fundraising activity for the year. The Cooroy Scout Group supports more than 50 children and young people from ages eight to eighteen. It provides young people with experiences that develop their back-to-basic skills while building leadership capabilities and resilience through outdoor adventures in camping, hiking, canoeing and abseiling. Sally said that the Cooroy Scout Group is often ineligible to apply for various community and government grants and that this event will give the group a much-needed injection of funds to help cover ever-increasing operational expenses. “The Cooroy Scout Group is one of the most active scout groups within the District yet, due to the nature of the group’s activities, is often ineligible to apply for many sporting or leisure grants that are offered through councils and government organisations, which can make fundraising challenging,” said Sally. “Because of the nature of our activities, we don’t

fit neatly into a “sporting” box, or an “arts” box; although many of our activities touch on these things.” The Cooroy Scout Group is encouraging the community to show its support for the group by gathering a group of friends to come along to the Drag Queen Bingo night. The fundraising event will be complemented by a raffle, with prizes being drawn on the night. Sally said that she has been blown away by the support of a number of local businesses that have donated goods or services for the raffle. “We have five prize packs, each valued at more than $100, as well as our major prize, which is a 10-person Wanderer Air Dome Tent valued at $800 donated by the team at Noosa BCF. “Our major prize is being teamed with a Big4 Club Membership valued at $50 so the major prize winner can make immediate use of their new tent,” Sally said. Tickets to the fundraising event are $15 per person and bingo books are sold on the night at a cost of $5 per book. Balls drop at 8pm, but everyone is encouraged to come a little earlier to enjoy a meal and a few drinks at the Cooroy RSL prior to the show. “All people have to do is to book a table at the Cooroy RSL then come along for a night of laughter and fun,” said Sally. To book a table, call the Cooroy RSL on 5447 6131.

It will be hard to find a scarecrow to beat last year’s popular artistic winner - The Dear Crow Glen II by Crystal Aylmer. MARY Valley crafters are searching their cupboards for old clothes and recycling items as scarecrow season officially opens this week. A Sunshine Coast bus company has already booked a tour to the Noosa hinterland popularly known as Mary Valley Country, and organisers of the annual festival have put out the call for scarecrows on every street corner. It doesn’t take long for

the gangly ‘crows to come out of the hills and sheds after a cold winter, in preparation for protecting the spring crops from unofficial harvesting by the odd feathered friend. Registrations open this week for the festival, with scarecrows on display from October 21 to November 12. Winners will be presented with their cash prizes at harvest dinner on November 19, a special event being planned by the auspicing organisation

Mary Valley Artslink. Long-time festival volunteer Lyn Hughes encouraged valley visitors to take a selfie with a ‘crow when they come “scarecrow spotting”. If they hashtag #mvscarecrows, organisers will post it on their Facebook page Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival. “Let’s see who gets the most likes!” Mrs Hughes said. “The person with the most selfies with different scarecrows can win $50 as well.” The festival is designed to encourage people to plan a day out in Mary Valley Country, and see if they can find the variety of serious and not-so-serious straw creations along the way. Once all scarecrows are registered, a Google map can be downloaded to let you know where all the entries are. Each town chooses their finalists, which are then judged against each town in the Mary Valley in three categories with cash prizes: Child (5-15 years) $50, traditional (T-shape skeleton and straw body) $100, and artistic (anything that is an original idea) $100. From small square bales of hay to the oversized

round bales once stacked three high to create the popular Heidi in 2004, locals are encouraged to find old clothes, timber strips for frames and any other items which they can recycle into a scarecrow. Scarecrows are about creating a farmer look-alike in the crops to keep the birds away but they also mark the arrival of spring when we can look forward

to a burst of nature after winter, Mrs Hughes said. “We encourage an element of creative licence, and often humour is the best aspect of our scarecrow entries.” Inquiries to Lyn Hughes on 0409 382868 or email info@scarecrows.org.au You can find the festival on Facebook or visit www.maryvalleyartslink. com.au

A dream day NOOSA District State High School Year 11 economics students spent the day at Dreamworld learning firsthand about the importance of the tourism industry to Australia’s economy. The students attended an informative talk on Dreamworld’s history and operations from the theme park’s Education Officer Jacqueline Wood. The students were surprised and relieved to hear that all the rides are tested every morning before the theme park opens and Dreamworld has never had a visitor suffer a serious or fatal injury from using a ride. Dreamworld markets to domestic, national and international guests, with advertising across a variety of mediums the most successful way it has found to gain business. Actors are never used in the television commercials, with Dreamworld priding itself on showcasing genuine thrills and excitement from real people. The economics class enjoyed a full day at Dreamworld trying out some of the theme park’s terrifying and adrenalin-pumping experiences as well as visiting and photographing the diverse wildlife including cute Australian animals and the exotic tigers of Tiger Island. The Year 11 students had a dream day with their classmates.

Local optometrists join campaign to raise funds for World Sight Day

Thoughts from the heart WHERE are the homes of yesteryear where mums and dads loved to sit and lend an ear to their beloved families. So many homes had ‘elastic sides’ where all were welcomed in and simple food was shared by all and children were dearly loved. So all you mums and dads out there, treasure your children with care as you’ll never know such heartache until they are not there. Jean Jones, Cooroy

LOCAL optometrists Jenny Currie and Heather McLeod of optometry@cooroy recently took part in the World Sight Day Challenge during October to help give the gift of vision to people in underserved communities around the world. Now in its 10th year, the World Sight Day Challenge is the largest annual global fundraising campaign to address avoidable blindness caused by uncorrected refractive error - simply the need for an eye exam and glasses. On World Sight Day (Thursday October 13), Jenny and Heather donated their eye examination fees for the day to help the more than 600 million people in the world who are blind or vision impaired because they do not have access to an eye exam or glasses. The campaign is run by global charity, Optometry Giving Sight.

“We have supported Optometry Giving Sight for 5 years,” said Jenny. “Preventable blindness is a solvable problem and we are proud to help give better vision to those in need. Most people are surprised to learn that for as little as $5 someone living in an underserved community can be provided with an eye exam and a pair of glasses to transform their lives. Everyone can make a huge difference and we are thrilled to be contributing to the challenge.” To date, Optometry Giving Sight has disbursed funding from donors and sponsors to 106 projects in 42 countries. For more information go to www.givingsight.org optometry@cooroy is located at 62 Maple Street, Cooroy. Call 5442 5555 for more information.

Whiplash: A Pain in the Neck WE often see people coming in to the practice with whiplash complaining of neck pain and soreness after car crashes, but did you know that there are other causes of whiplash too? Whiplash is medically described as an injury resulting from sudden acceleration-deceleration forces on the neck. Imagine your neck moving in a similar motion to that of a cracking whip. This motion can happen in a backwards and forwards direction or a side to side motion. While the most common source of whiplash is motor vehicle accidents, other causes may include rollercoasters, bungee jumping and head collisions. Symptoms and severity of whiplash can vary significantly between people. The most commonly reported symptoms are neck pain and stiffness. This can occur anywhere from immediately after the injury to several days later. Other symptoms

of whiplash include headaches, dizziness, shoulder/arm/upper back pain, weakness and difficulty concentrating. If you believe you are suffering from any of these symptoms, get yourself to your GP or local physiotherapist for assessment and treatment. Physiotherapists will guide you through the best evidence based treatment aiming to improve individual each individual’s dysfunctions. Potential treatment methods include: continuing normal activities as able, joint mobilisation, massage, exercise, muscular retraining, dry needling, education and electrotherapy. The aim for therapy is to return you to previous level of function and activities of daily living. If you have any queries regarding whiplash, do not hesitate to call the friendly team at Hinteractive Physio on 5442 5556.

Gettin’ Prickly with it!

HEAT rash is the “generic” name for a number of skin problems that arise or worsen because of heat exposure. Common names for heat rash include prickly heat, miliaria rubra, sweat retention syndrome, and “sun” allergy. This disorder occurs all year round in the tropics, and elsewhere in the summer months when the weather is hot and humid. Treated early, with good advice from your LiveLife pharmacists, it is easily managed! But why does it happen? Heat rash is caused by a blockage of the sweat glands, especially after repeated episodes of sweating, leading to inflammation when sweat escapes into adjacent tissue. This causes the itching and prickling sensations that most people seek treatment for, as well as the red rash, which may be extensive. Most heat rash resolves without treatment, often within a day of changing to a cooler environment. Even though the sweat glands may take a week or two to be repaired, if there is not an excessive demand placed on the body for cooling, then the rash will clear quickly. The challenge is to manage heat rash if you need to remain in a hot and humid environment. Treatment will involve helping you with relief of symptoms, and giving advice as to how you can avoid it getting worse, or recurring. Who is at risk?

• Infants, and overweight children/adults are at particular risk of getting heat rash, as is anybody doing more physical activity than normal in a hot and humid environment. • Heat rash is also easily caused, or aggravated, by any skin lotion that has the ability to enter sweat glands (i.e. almost all skin lotions) and block them. • It is common to find sufferers of heat rash who have recently arrived in a hot area from a cooler climate, put on a good quality water resistant thick 50+ sunscreen, spent a lot of time outdoors in the sunshine enjoying themselves, and moisturised diligently after noticing some redness appearing on the skin. The increased and unusual demands on their sweat glands for cooling the body, the sunscreen, and the moisturiser have all contributed to the heat rash. How can you avoid it? Keep cool!! Remain in a cool environment e.g. air conditioning, in the water, or close to a fan, and allow for adequate ventilation of the skin. Take cool showers or baths, several times a day, and always after exercise or heat exposure. Always pat dry the skin with a towel, do not rub vigorously. Use cool packs on affected areas (but not for longer than 20 minutes per hour). Wear loose fitting, light, soft clothes. Avoid clothing that traps heat or moisture. Cotton underwear is better than no underwear if the groin or buttocks are affected. Avoid skin to skin contact elsewhere by placing a soft, clean washcloth or other material between skin folds e.g. under breasts. If the skin is irritated, avoid soaps, but use a non-soap alternative like Pinetarsol if necessary for cleanliness, or itch relief. Always avoid hot spas and saunas. Always wear a sunscreen, as sunburn will aggravate heat rash, but use an alcohol based or evaporative based sunscreen. Do not apply after-sun moisturisers to the affected area as they will block the already aggravated sweat ducts. Come in and visit your local LiveLife pharmacist for more advice! Blessing of the pets

Advanced Physio Cooroy THE Cooroy Anglican Church celebrated St Francis of Assisi, on Sunday 2 October, by a special service Blessing of the Pets. Rev’d Beverley Jane officiated at the service and blessed each of the pets present individually, those present, apart from humans, were 8 dogs, a cat and a silkie hen.

www.cooroyrag.com.au

All the pets were well behaved and seemed suitably impressed, with no fighting. Rev’d Beverley addressed the congregation by talking on the life and works of St Francis who lived in Italy as a friar and preacher in the 12th-13th century. The sermon can be heard by visiting the Parish web site on coorooraanglican.org.

Cooroy 8 Ball Association

The Cooroy team who competed in the “Best of the West” Comp in Gympie

Last week’s local comp winner Shaun, 2nd Frank. Another great turnout with 23 playing.

MEMBERS of the Cooroy 8 Ball Association recently competed in the “Best of the West” 8 Ball Competition held in Gympie. The A team finished fourth and the B Team just missed on the finals by a countback of games. Some stiff completion was offered by Ipswich, Toowoomba and Gympie Clubs. Congratulations to the boys for a great effort in their first time participating in this tournament. They have already been invited back to take part next year. The Cooroy 8 Ball Association hold a very popular pool comp every Wednesday night at the Cooroy Hotel. It’s growing every week but more players are always welcome. There’s some great prizes on offer (up to $200) and it’s a great social occasion as well so turn up on the night and join in the fun. Comp starts at 6.30, registration from 5.30.

fax: 5442 6093 L to R: Monthly medal winners, Lyn Blackmore, Christine Michael and Colleen Sykes. THE Cooroy Horse and Pony Club celebrated a very successful annual gymkhana on Sunday August 14th. The success of this event would not be possible without the very generous support of our local Business Community to whom we owe a huge debt. In particular the support of the Cooroy Rag who are always there for our club when we need them. Last but not least , many thanks to our members and their families who provided so much help.
