Asylum seekers a problem? Stop arguing and fix it! If ever our politics showed its outrageous side It has to be what is happening at this time. With this ridiculous situation of the asylum-seekers, And the politicians arguing with no reason or rhyme! The public is sick and tired of this continual bickering, With no attempt to work for a solution, It can be solved if the politicians did their job, And rid us of this costly confusion

The responsibility rests with us as a nation, The solution won’t come with unending quarrel, It should be treated on bi-partisan lines, The politicians’ behaviour is wrong, and immoral. Other countries have far greater refugee problems, They are handling them, and getting on with the task, Australians aren’t stupid, we can handle them too, Let’s do it, surely that’s not too much to ask?

SHOOTERS SUPPLIES

Who can blame them if they want to flee to Australia, This land must be a wonderful sight, We have signed a pledge, a covenant to accept them, And we are obliged to honour that commitment, as a right

Surely both sides together, can produce a suitable solution, Without all this on-shore, off-shore processing hostility, Forget all this futile, childish, blaming and naming, The people want you to show some responsibility! Why does everything have to become a political brawl, Instead of proper Parliamentary debate? Members must think beyond the next election, And in the name of national interest – collaborate! THE annual Photo Competition sponsored by Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy has become a highly popular component of the Christmas in Cooroy program. And this year it is bound to be even better with an increased prize pool! Entry is free and the prizes have been increased to $500 cash for first, a $100 Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy voucher for second and a $50 Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy voucher for third prize. Plus all three winners get a 12” x 12” canvas print of their entry. And it isn’t all about winning, because all the photos go into an exhibition at the Butter Factory Arts Centre for a few weeks in December so it is great just to enter and see your photo on display. “The theme is ‘My Favourite Things’ which gives a really broad basis for interpretation. The photo must be taken somewhere on the Sunshine Coast and it needs to be of something you consider to be one of your favourite things. The possibilities are endless and it is a competition for all ages with past winners including children, teenagers and older entrants. It’s worth digging through your photo albums to see if there is anything relevant or get out there and take some new snaps,” explained Christmas in Cooroy Event Manager, Danielle Taylor. Entries can be submitted to the Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy in Maple Street, Cooroy up until 5pm on Friday 25 November. For more information refer to the Christmas in Cooroy website – www.christmasincooroy.com.au.

David Lafferty, Fiona Hutchings and Seb Vecchio celebrating the $6,000 cheque being presented by Cooroy Community Bank branch for the 2011 Bendigo Bank Street Parade EVERYONE loves a parade, especially one at Christmas time! One of the highlights of the annual Christmas in Cooroy celebrations is the street parade which makes its way up Maple Street and back and attracts approximately 5,000 people into Cooroy. The Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has once again boosted Cooroy ’s celebrations by contributing $6,000 towards celebrations in 2011. Christmas in Cooroy is being held on Saturday, December 3 this year with the Bendigo Bank Street Parade commencing at 5.00pm.The theme for this year ’s event is

“Heroes and Villains ” and the staff at Bendigo Bank and many other businesses around Cooroy are busily planning their float. Event manager, Danielle Taylor says this year ’s parade them e is sure to bring out the fun in everyone. “The Bendigo Bank Street Parade is a great spectacle and thousands of people line the streets to watch the floats. The best float award is hotly contested with previous winners including the Cooroy Rag, Cooroy State School and Tadpoles, who took out the title last year. Who knows which amazing entry

will win this year? One thing is certain – it will be a colourful spectacular you won ’t want to miss, “Ms . Taylor added. “The Cooroy Community Bank branch ’s sponsorship is invaluable each year as there ’s so much that goes into planning a free community event such as Christmas in Cooroy. It simply couldn ’t be achieved without sponsorship from local businesses. Christmas in Cooroy has grown each year and so have the associated costs for everything from insurance to rides. The event is jointly hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club of Cooroy

and there are approximately 30 sponsors and a host of volunteers that make the event a success ,” she said. “The Christmas in Cooroy Committee started planning in February this year so it just goes to show how much there is involved,” explained David Lafferty, Chairperson of the Christmas in Cooroy Committee. Other major sponsors that have already agreed to sponsor this year ’s event include Ricon Contractors who decorate the Christmas Tree in Maple Street, Cooroy Hotel and The Plantation B&B who sponsor the bar area in Apex Park and the Poet ’s Breakfast , Luke ’s Supa IGA Cooroy who sponsor the staging and local band Smokin ’ Mirrors,Cooroy Rag who provide advertising and fund the free rides in Apex Park, Cooroy Central Guard-

ian Pharmacy who sponsor the photo competition, Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group who sponsor The Great Santa Race and Greenwood Grove who are sponsoring volunteer t-shirts. Sunshine Coast Council has also provided funding through their Community Grant Program under the Festive Season Strategy. There are still sponsorship opportunities (cash and inkind) available by contacting Event Manager, Danielle Taylor on 0403 023 802 or danielle@firefly solutions.com.au. THE 2011 Great Endeavour Rally was challenging and great fun with good people all working to raise money for the Endeavour Foundation. Once again, Lenny Clark (driver) and Vince Ryland (navigator) entered the event raising around $6000 for this worthy foundation. For those who wonder what it would be like to participate in the Great Endeavour Rally the following is an extract from Lenny’s trip diary: Sunday July 10: After breaking three wheel studs before reaching Widgee, we fixed the Wizard (mighty green wagon) and headed off on the yellow brick road to find Goodiwindi. With no further trouble we arrived and settled in and renewed friendships with fellow rallytives. Tuesday 12: After the street parade we finally headed off to Moonie for lunch. With some of the roughest tracks the Wizard has ever faced and getting bogged (so did almost all of the other entrants) we finally made it into Flinton. Wednesday 13: Flinton to Boolba, another day of rought and interesting tracks and gates and gates and gates. Thursday 14: Boolba to Dunkfield. The rian has started the racks are muddy, the dirt roads are slippery. Even trying to drive straight was difficult, one car decided to have a lie down on its side, most others ran off the road at least once. Friday 15: Dunkfield to Wyandra. Another wet day and after lunch at Morven Hall we headed back into the mud. Finished allt he stages late and headed to Wyandra on the transit stage in the dark. About 20kms from the end of the day a mob of cattle decided to see how tough the HX was. Not too sure who won, we bent and broke a few things but kept on going and the cow did a few barrel rolls, got up and bolted so

we were even. With no lights, only guided in by Car 98 we made it to camp. With the help of a winch we pulled it straight enough to continue. Saturday 16: Wyandra to Charleville all stages cancelled due to the wet conditions, we had a day in Charleville. Fixed the car a bit more, went to the footy and back to the dodgiest motel room yet, but it had a dry bed. Sunday 17: Charleville to Tambo. Augathella for lunch. First section cancelled but weather improved and we were back into it with gates more gates and more gates in total for the days over 200 gates. Monday 18: Tambo to Tooloombilla, another great day, great scenery. Fuel by tanker at Tooloombilla Rodeo grounds, camp oven meals, great food and the running of the ‘Stonehenge Gift’ (100m naked race) which for obvious reasons we didn’t partake. The bloke who rode the fibreglass horse naked is still walking funny from the fibreglass. Tuesday 19: Tooloombilla to Miles – clear sunny skies greeted us for the trip to Miles and after a few deep sandy patches and some big bumps we made it with a broken front shock that we fixed before tea at the historic village. Wednesday 20: Miles to Mt Alford – a bypass of the Condamine Gorge Road section because a few greenies thought we were going to wreck the road (they will stop us all from going anywhere if they get their way). Mt Alford pub, the site for tea and $1000 put on the bar from the parents of Grant, one of the 10 Endeavour clients that came on the rally (and what fun they had). Lenny and Vince are already looking forward to lining up for the 2012 Super Rally, Charleville to Yeppoon via The Grove Peninsula (East Arnhem Land). Please support them in their fundraising events to get them to the start line.

BOUQUETS & B R I C K B AT S BRICKBATS to the young man who held up and robbed the BP service station. All the staff there are always so friendly and none of them deserve to have this happen to them. You have shamed your whole local community!

BRICKBAT to the person who stole $50 of raffle takings for the National Breast Cancer Foundation this week. How appalling to steal from charity when local businesses have generously donated prizes and are selling tickets to support this worthy cause. BOUQUET to Lyn from IGA who generously organised the Paint the Town Pink for the Cindy Mackenzie Foundation. Well done and you all looked great in Pink. BOUQUET to Cooroy Police Sergeant Mal Scott, guest speaker at the Cooroy Probus Club. His talk was an interesting insight into the often difficult Police unit work in our town. We should be grateful for the community spirit evidenced by these officers, and give them every assistance. BOUQUET to the lady who won the raffles at the Wildflower Fashion Show. The win was much deserved. BRICKBAT to the truck drivers in Maple Street who don’t pull up to allow other drivers to reverse park. It’s getting dangerous out there! Email your bouquet and brickbats to editorial@cooroyrag.com.au The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered “Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

ON Saturday, the 17th of September, the Hinterland Christian Centre held a garage sale at the CWA Hall in Cooroy. Funds were raised to support the Cebu Missionary Foundation in the Philippines. Each year in October, the Hinterland Christian Centre sends a team to Cebu to assist with the work there. Cebu is the second largest city in the Philippines and the church there is situated next to a dump which is home to a great number of people. While there, the team of eight will be involved in visiting prisons, schools, feeding programs and taking medical aid to remote areas. The Hinterland Christian Centre would like to thank all those involved in helping on the day and the community for their support. The money raised exceeded expectations and will go a long way to making a huge difference to the vital work in Cebu.

Photography exhibition THE graduating exhibition of the 2011 Sunshine Coast TAFE Photography Students will open at the end of October, showcasing the best photographic works produced by the 18 graduating students who are preparing to enter the fastpaced photography industry. Vivid - A Photographic Exhibition, will run for three weeks, with the opening night on Friday 28th October at Noosa Marina, 2 Parkyn Court Tewantin, from 6:30 pm onwards. Cooroy photographer Malcolm Hewitt is among the 18 students who will be exhibiting at the Marina. “We’re really excited to show off our best and new work at the opening night. It’s going to be an awesome night celebrating the hard work we’ve put in over the past two years” he said. Come along to see the wonderful photographs and have a great time celebrating the success of these students.

Internet security Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy OVER the last couple of decades more and more of our banking takes place online, at ATM’s or over the phone. While it’s convenient for us, new technology also provides opportunities for villains to run scams designed to steal our account information and con us out of money. Here are some simple tips that can help to protect you from scams: • If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. • Get independent advice if an offer involves significant money, time or commitment. • Never send money or give out your credit card or online account details. • Keep your credit, debit and ATM cards safe. Don’t write down or tell anyone else your pin. • Check your bank account and credit card statements as soon as you get them. If you notice a suspect transaction, report it immediately. • Destroy documents that contain personal information, don’t just throw them out. • Install software to protect your computer from unauthorised access and keep it up to date. • Never enter your details on a website you’re not sure is genuine. • Change your password regularly.

• Be wary of unsolicited emails or phone calls requesting personal information or card numbers. Banks will not ask you to disclose this information. • Make sure nobody sees you entering your PIN into an ATM or EFTPOS machine. Also, your bank will be able to assist you with further ways of protecting your money. This can include Secure Microchip Technology which makes it harder for thieves to fraudulently copy your card details. A Security Token is also recommended if you are using Internet Banking as it provides an additional level of security by providing a random number that must be input before you can access your accounts. If you have any questions about internet banking security or any other matters, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings@bendigobank.com.au.

Community Update KNOW someone outstanding? Why not give them the recognition they deserve and nominate them for an Australia Day award. Nominations are now open for the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Lew Brennan, Awards 2012. These Div 12 Councillor awards provide an opportunity to publicly acknowledge the many local heroes within our community and to recognise personal achievements or outstanding service that may otherwise go unnoticed. Further details and entry kits are available through council libraries and customer service centres with downloadable kits or online nominations via council’s website. Nominations close on Friday 30 December 2011. Coles Creek Road construction works Work has started on pavement reconstruction and widening of a section of Coles Creek Road in Cooran. Construction should be completed within six weeks. This is the final piece of the total upgrade of Coles Creek Road that I initiated with council back in 1997. Once completed, we will have a safe bitumen school bus route, and access road from Cooran to the Bruce Highway for Cooran residents and visitors. Pretty in pink at the Cooroy library The Cooroy library will look pretty in pink in October to raise funds and awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Everyone’s invited to the library for the Pink Precinct Fun Trail and the Pink Readathon. The Pink Precinct Fun Trail will start at 7am on Thursday 13 October. Dress in your best pink outfit and follow a surprise trail around Mill Place precinct. Prizes will be given for the first to finish and the best pink costume. It’s great to see the Cooroy library partnering with local community groups and businesses to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Last year the Pinktober fashion parade, held at the Cooroy Library, raised over $2000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and they hope to increase the amount this year. Turn pink, join in, have fun and help others. For more information about these events ring the Cooroy Library on 5454 9000, or pop in and talk to one of the staff. Local parks get a makeover New playground equipment has now been installed and ready for the little ones to enjoy at Hall Park, Kin Kin and Sundial Park, Noosa Outlook. Council has spent close to $70,000 refurbishing these two parks that were greatly in need of an upgrade.

UNDER the state’s new pool safety laws, Friday 4th November 2011 is the deadline for all swimming pools to be registered. Penalties of up to $2000.00 will apply after this time. The deadline was actually extended by six months as a result of the floods and cyclones earlier in the year but it is highly unlikely that a further extension will granted.

So the 4th November is it! The register has been developed under the new pool safety laws and is principally made up of the records from the various councils across Queensland. However, according to local pool safety inspector, Chris Bell of Pool Fence Approvals, it can’t be taken for granted that a pool that was previously listed with the local council has been automatically transferred. You need to check! To do so, simply go to www.dlgp.qld.gov.au/ pool-safety and conduct a property search. Enter the street address or the real property description found on the rates notice. If the search confirms that the pool is registered, then there is nothing to worry about. If it isn’t, then click on ‘Alert the Pool Safety Council’. If you have any problems, or don’t have access to the internet,

then simply call Pool Fence Approvals on 5447 7737 or 0412 043 843 and they will do it for you and at no charge! Once a pool is confirmed as registered, pool owners have until the 30th November 2015 to comply with the new pool safety standards, unless their property is sold or leased in the meantime. To help identify what work might be required for compliance, Pool Fence Approvals are now providing a unique pre-inspection service that will enable any work to be carried out to suit the pool owner’s budget, and timetable. It is worth noting that, to date, all but one of the pools that they have inspected have required some form of repair and maintenance or changes, to the pool fence. So why not call them and arrange for a visit. They really are making your pool safety, their business.

Camping with the mod-cons DOES the idea of going camping give you nightmares at the thought of your socks standing up by themselves or your breath smelling like a crow’s crotch for the lack of proper ablution facilities? Does school holidays have you reciting the anti campers prayer … “Oh Dear Lord please make the school break weather forecast for constant rain, so I don’t have to sweat it out in a smelly old tent.” Does your idea of escaping the city bustle involve buying a farm or acreage and installing all the modcons? If you have answered “yes” to all of the above, then PinkTronix is pleased to inform you that a little salvation is in sight in the form of a TravelSat VAST mobile TV kit. The truth of the matter is that you won’t escape your parental obligations forever but you can mitigate much of the misery with a TravelSat Premium Plus from PinkTronix. With over 40 channels of rock solid VAST reception to entertain no mat-

ter where you are, the hordes of sand flies, mosquitoes and moths will simply be relegated to the status of minor annoyance as you lose yourself in latest line of mudslinging diatribes from parliament house. Watch the Bathurst 500 or your favourite cooking show, oblivious to the trickle of rain seeping through the seams in your Great Wall tent as the water pools in the low lying ground around your favourite pillow. You won’t even realize you are wiping away the sweat from 45 degree heat as the HDMI signal from the VAST decoder delivers you the latest footy match in full high definition. Go on … lash out and take the surround sound system with you as well. It won’t take up much room. The Altech decoder spits out audio thru 5.1 coax SPDIF and optical TOS link as well as stereo. Hey guys, remember the days when we had to make do with a stereo simulcasts? There you go…another great camp conversation

to distract and anaesthetise the mind as the billy boils over and the embers smoke out your van. So much misery … such an easy fix! So you think you can’t find the satellite …well that was yesterday. Hook up your SF 3280 programmable satellite finder and aside from the cries of your estranged wife seeking protection from the red bellied blacks, the only squeal you will hear will be from the signals on OPTUS C1 as your finder effortlessly locks on to the VAST transponder. The SF3280 ignores the pretenders. But I bet you can’t afford it … cos you want the house hooked up to VAST first right? Wrong!! The decoder can be shared and PinkTronix will offer you a great combo deal if you purchase a mobile kit and home installation together. IT can be a very confusing experience buying a ride on mower, particularly if it’s your first time. Some important factors apart from the purchase price need to be considered and an informed choice could save you time and money. Firstly, consider ‘whole of life’ costs as well as other facts never highlighted in brochures or websites full of specifications and marketing terminology. Most owners will keep the mower for at least four years so costs over this term can easily blow out if a misinformed decision is made. Below are some things to consider. Time in the seat. Your time could be better spent doing other things. Time is money. Fuel consumption. The longer you are using your mower the more fuel you will use. Reduce the time and reduce your fuel costs. Servicing. The more you use your mower the more often you will need to perform regular servicing. Oil and filter

replacements are necessary Wear and tear. Vibrating engines and high speed blades can cause many wear points on a mower and these can become loose, cracked or broken. When buying a large deck mower it important to find out, if the deck cuts & clears efficiently. The only way to find this out is to request a demonstration to test the performance. Deck construction can be confusing, the gauge (thickness) is what is important, not just the way it’s mounted or welded together. Advertised horsepower is probably the most misleading feature on a mower. Most manufacturers have increased horsepower to a point where they are too powerful for the mower deck and the end result will be belt failure causing costly down time for repairs. An emerging category is the zero turn mower. To the surprise of many, a good model can sometimes cost less than a well specified conventional mower and offer good manoeuvrability, vision and

the capacity to handle difficult or hilly terrain. Toro offers one of the largest ranges of zero turn mowers and is a market leader in features and design. A proven low centre of gravity, correct balance and bias front to rear, properly designed cutter decks with high blade speeds complete the reliable package. Independent drive to both drive wheels, all but eliminate traction problems. They utilise quality components and are backed with great warranties. They don’t have all the fancy items like headlights, engine enclosures, steering joints and complicated and unserviceable belt drives. With the strong Australian dollar it’s a great time to considering thinking outside the square which is ‘your backyard’. For any enquiries, sales and service, contact David and his team at Mower & ATV Solutions, Lower Mill Road, Cooroy, 5442 5999.

police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott THE recent Armed Robbery incident in Cooroy highlights the fact that we are not immune from the more violent style crimes more associated with the bigger centres such as Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Cooroy Police recently conducted an Armed Robbery Awareness Workshop at the Cooroy Hotel which was attended by representatives of over 60 businesses in Cooroy. Many strategies and common sense ideas were discussed on how best to protect your business against this type of offence and I have no doubt that some of the information gleaned by our business community during this workshop was instrumental in apprehending the alleged offender less than 24 hours after the offence was committed. Due to the quick thinking of the console operator Cooroy Police were able to arrive on scene within a minute of the offence occurring and commence the implementation of police cordons and the deployment of the Dog Squad shortly after. A Number of witnesses were located and together with the use of CCTV Footage from a number of nearby businesses a 24 year old local man was quickly identified sought for questioning as a person of interest. I would like to thank the locals who assisted police with our inquiries and also the witnesses and the console operator for providing very good initial information which greatly assisted us in the arrest of the offender. Matters like this are not solved by accident and to solve this one within 24 hours is a testament to the cooperation that is clearly evident between the local police and the community. If you are reading this and you played a part in the above then pat yourselves on the back for a job well done. The Cooroy Community is a safer place for your efforts. I would like to give an example of just how bad a community can become through apathy and a don’t care attitude. This example is a true example that happened to me at a previous centre that I worked in about 15 years ago. I recall that I was investigating a break and enter offence and as part of my investigation into the burglary of a family’s home I commenced a door knock of neighbours in an attempt at finding witnesses to the offence. Most often, this type of duty leads nowhere as the majority of people take little or no notice of there neighbourhood or its comings and goings. On this particular occasion I was surprised when a middle aged lady answered the door and when I asked if she had noticed anything suspicious about her neighbour ’s property during the day she readily admitted seeing a grubby looking male climbing through a side window and then leaving via

• Hydrobath • Clipping the back door carrying a bag full of property. Of course, I was amazed at this revelation and was very interested in her reasons for not phoning the police to report what she had seen. In a very sincere and calm manner she explained to me that it was not her job to report such matters and that she did not want to become involved in such things. To say the least I was completely amazed at this attitude but controlled my urge to berate her for her lack of good will. I actually reversed the scenario on her and asked her if it was her house being burgled what action would she expect from her neighbour in that case and of course she went silent and retreated into the dark recesses of her house. I’m happy to say that I have never came across that kind of community apathy in Cooroy but it again highlights the very important part that the community can play in keeping Cooroy Safe. Up until last week, Cooroy had not had a break and enter offence for several months. This all stopped last week with three business premises broken into in the early hours of the morning with Cash and other goods stolen. Police are currently following up on a number of leads in regards these offences and anyone with information in regards these matters please contact Cooroy Police on 54425030 or CrimeStoppers on 1800333000. Cooroy Police are set to relaunch the Cooroy “ON ALERT” community initiative. This program seeks to alert the Cooroy Business community in a timely manner to police issues within the Cooroy CBD. The Cooroy business community numbers about 150 businesses and most crime that occurs in Cooroy directly impacts upon these main stakeholders. I have previously compiled a Cooroy Business Chart or Business Tree which is distributed to all businesses. When a police matter needs to be disseminated to the community the police station rings the two lead businesses at the head of the tree and imparts the particular information. That business then phones the two businesses listed as there businesses to advise and so on until all businesses have been advised. Within 30 minutes of an incident taking place all 150 Cooroy businesses are aware of the police incident and then become empowered in keeping themselves and the community safe. Some example of how this may work is a suspect stolen vehicle seen getting around Cooroy or a missing child, or maybe some suspects off loading dud cheques to shop keepers. The examples of how this system can be utilised are numerous as this system has been used to great effect in Cooroy previously so expect to see this chart in operation within the next month or two.

COOROY RAG Helping Queenslanders for 30 years

by Carol Watkins, Deputy Local Controller, Sunshine Coast North COMMUNITY events once again have been a large part of our activity with SES volunteers attending and helping out at the 000 Mountain Bike Race, an all day event organised by the police service to raise money for charities in Pomona, and the Pink Precinct Fun Trail in Cooroy, The Daniel Morcombe search is now finished and our local SES members helped out the Caloundra SES unit continuously over the eight week duration. This was a land search unlike any other we’ve been involved in, and we learned many new skills working alongside highly skilled and knowledgeable police, including forensics specialists. As I write this, we’ve just come through an early morning storm. This untimely event reinforces how unpredictable the weather is. Storms can come at any time of the day, and sometimes with minimal warning. With winds in that storm up to 140kph, it’s a good idea to check that your house roof, plus any other roofs in the yard are firmly fixed. It is not unknown for nails holding roofs down to come loose over the years. I received alerts on my mobile phone, and by email from The Australian Early Warning Network, and if you haven’t subscribed to this, you can organise to receive alerts by going to www.ewn.com.au. Unfortunately, in Queensland, this is now only free to resi-

dents of Brisbane City Council area, whereas when I signed up it was free Australia wide. An alternative is to go to http:// www.bom.gov.au/products/ IDR083.loop.shtml on the internet where you can see the up to date weather radar map; and at the bottom of the page click on Weather and Warnings to see what is predicted. Our Local Controller, along with most Local Controllers in the State, has been invited to participate in the Queensland Flood Commission of Inquiry and has completed a questionnaire in relation to the nature, role and funding of SES units in Queensland, with emphasis on how our SES unit and its various groups operate, and how operations were undertaken during the 2010/2011 floods. This is important as it provides frontline feedback from those of us on the ground to the planners on what resources, including people and equipment, are essential for us to do our job. As volunteers we rely on up to date planning, strategies and resources. a relaxed and hands on learning environment. Workshop participants not only learn about the many topics on offer, they also have an opportunity to walk around the gardens and property areas and ask Cath and Paul about their home and the systems that have been implemented. An on-site and on-line consultation service is also offered by Cath. This is available to anyone with existing gardens who may have questions, prob-

lems or need help with an action plan for their home and gardens. Anyone wanting to establish sustainable systems like Kitchen Gardens, compost or worm farms, chooks or orchards may also need help with planning or creating of these areas. Consultations are offered on-site to residents of the Sunshine Coast and on-line to clients outside of the region. Anyone wanting to make a “tree change’ may require some assistance

when looking at a new property with a view to establishing a self-reliant or sustainable property. Cath can arrange to meet on-site and provide recommendations on the potential of the property for establishing these systems. If you are interested in attending a Sustainable Organic Workshop or booking a Consultation please visit www. cathmanuel.com or phone Cath on 0408 060 997. Next workshop November 12.

real estate Melanie’s tips for selling your home

COOROY RAG

THIS is a great time of the year to put your house on the market, the weather is warm, the days are breezy, the gardens are in bloom, Summer is definitely on its way. We’ve got your buyers, and they’re all lined up to view your property so what could possibly go wrong? Generally it goes without saying that all home buyers have two things in common, the first thing is they are looking for something a little bit different in a budget that suits and the second thing is that all of them will usually turn around and walk out your door if they notice one or more of these problems:First. The most off putting thing to a prospective buyer is Odours. The way that your house smells is the first thing that any buyer will notice. Cigarette smoke, pets, mildew and last night’s curry are the worst offenders. You can eliminate these by using an air freshener or before you put your house on the market shampoo the carpets, wash the curtains, cushion covers and bed linen. At the very least open the windows and ventilate by letting in that clean spring air before someone comes around. Second. Pets at the door. I love all animals but even the most loving pooch can frighten or have your buyers wiping their eyes and sneezing. Best take the dog for a walk and shoo out the cat, cover the birdcage and take your child’s pet mouse to the neighbours. Then there’s dimly lit rooms, Queenslanders don’t like to live in the dark, make sure that the house is shown off to its best by clean windows and keep the curtains wide open. Replace any dim or broken light fittings and turn on lamps in the sitting and bedrooms. Think about

trimming away branches from windows that may shadow the house it really helps to let the light in. Bugs really Bug. It truly is the exceptional few that want to live with spiders, cockroaches, ants or any other type of insects. Get rid of them and any evidence that they have been there. Ant piles in the lawn are also a deterrent so try the ant sand, I have used it myself and it works over time. The last thing on this list but one of the most important is the sellers who won’t leave the house. Go to the beach, have a coffee, or pop in on a friend, do anything you can to be out of the house. You know yourself that when looking for a home you want to be able to take your time and talk honestly with your agent. Buyers will ask more questions and clarify issues if you are not around. In the days where the market is so competitive why not have the edge? It is important to have the right person on your side. You can call me, Melanie Fink on 0488 107 205 at Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland if you are thinking of putting your house on the market, I will be able to give you great service and helpful practical advice on what not and what to do when selling your home.

Two of Cooroy’s well known businesswomen, (and mums) Margaret Kippen of Cooroy Drapery and Karen Marriott, Manager the RSL, celebrated family weddings in the month of September. Margaret and William embraced the day as their son Robert married Kim Buchanan (Above left) at an intimate beach side ceremony in Noosa. Rob and his beautiful bride Kim were both former students at Noosa District High. Karen, not one to hold back the tears was in fine form as she watched husband Gary escort their stunning daughter Kaila to her groom-in-waiting Derek Rose (Above right). The gorgeous ceremony was held at the Marriott family property on Cooroy Mountain Road. Both ceremonies were officiated by local celebrant Celeste Frances Scott, who portrayed each couples love story with all the romance, sentiment and hilarity that lead each to the point of saying ‘I DO’.

pomona Facts about the Noosa Hinterland Quarry

COOROY RAG

POMONA

Kin Kin Community Group Inc. THE proposed Quarry in the Hinterland near Kin Kin now playing out in the media is proving an emotive issue. There has been a considerable amount of conflicting information from the different camps. No doubt it has been hard for the general public to get a clear picture of the FACTS. The number of truck movements. The Mega Quarry management and its ardent lone voice promoter Lachlan Davis give an estimate of up to 40 trucks per day. Under oath in the P&E Court Ray Neilsen Director stated he intended to work the quarry to its fullest capacity. The hinterland Mega Quarry has a legal annual capacity limit of 1,000,000 tonnes; divided by a 250 workday year that means 4,000 tons a day. Divide that by a legal 40 ton truck & dog trailer load and you have 100 trucks loads. Of course that figure must be doubled to account for the truck movements journeying to and from the Quarry. FACT: up to 200 hundred truck movements a day which in an 8 hour day -that would mean one truck passing one way or the other every two and a half minutes. The state of the roads FACT: The shortest transport route between the hinterland quarry and the Bruce Highway is via Pomona.

FACT: The Kin Kin to Pomona road has been listed by RACQ as being the 10th worst road in Queensland. The first nine of the ten listed were horror stretches on major highways. FACT: The cost to upgrade these roads to a safe standard capable of accommodating the quarry trucks State Government estimates is $74 million. A modest $ 3million has been allocated by the State Government to upgrade the road. Before this road is upgraded to the standard required it would be neither safe, nor realistic if not criminally negligent to let this Mega Quarry development advance. The quarry will be good for the local economy? The Quarry management/ Lachlan Davis insist and promote that the Mega Quarry will be good for our local economy. FACT: The extraction industry is a low employer considering truck drivers are generally subcontractors in peak capacity the quarry would only employ around 6 to 10 fulltime people. FACT: The adjoining retreat and health spa Living Valley Springs now in jeopardy from the Mega Quarry employs 60 people alone and is the community’s largest employer. With only a local population base

of around 450 that means a significant number of livelihoods are at stake. Property values. The largest capital investment for most Australians is their home. FACT: Local realtors confirm that property values in our community have taken a direct hit and sales have stagnated since the announcement that Neilsens have the option for a Mega Quarry. Our Local Hinterland community has mixed economy of tourism, cottage industries and farming FACT: These industries are dependent on our Clean Green and Serene Environment. In fact as a brand ‘Clean Green and Serene’ is something worth preserving and nurturing so the region can attract more tourists, sell and create more local products and value add our farm produce. FACT: The Mega Quarry would compromise if not devastate this brand. Fears for the Environment FACT: The Mega Quarry if allowed to proceed will be situated in a catchment area that produces a third of all water flowing into the environmentally sensitive Noosa River catchment. FACT: Even in preparation stage the quarry has failed to contain spillage into this catchment.

Group who are based at the gallery, decided to present her with something she really wanted as a farewell gift. During Alan Fall’s recent exhibition in the Carriage on the gallery site, Trish was constantly admiring her

very favourite artwork created by Alan and so she was devastated to learn that it had been sold. So upset was Trish that whenever she popped into the gallery afterwards she couldn’t help herself…she just had to search the

gallery records in the office (unsuccessfully of course) to try and find out who had purchased the painting she so desired. Unbeknowns to Trish, the Hinterland Art Group had funded the purchase of the art work and it had been safely hidden away (it should also be noted that Pomona Inc. generously donated their commission in this instance). Last weekend Trish attended the birthday party of one of the HAG members and it was during the party that the painting was presented to her. To say Trish was shocked (but delighted of course) would be an understatement. It is now proudly hanging prominently in her home.

OVER 100 people enjoyed the sunshine at the ‘Old Fashioned Morning Tea’ held at the Noosa Museum in Pomona on Tuesday, September 13th, 2011. The morning was arranged to commemorate the 100th Birthday of the Museum’s building, which was erected early 1911. Its first public use was the designated Council Chambers of the then Noosa Shire. The date of the first meeting held in the building was September 13, 1911 – so it was fitting that this special centennial birthday was able to be organized for exactly 100 years later. Special guests included Mayor Bob Abbot (as the last Mayor of Noosa Shire Council and the first Mayor of the amalgamated Sunshine Coast Council). Members of the Museum were pleased to welcome the families of many past Chairmen and Councillors from Noosa Shire – some of whom travelled from Bundaberg, Brisbane and Beerwah. The Celebration Cake was cut by Esme Tait (granddaughter of James Duke who was the first Chairman of Noosa Shire) and Christine Chapman (our person over 100 years young). It was wonderful to see so many people greeting others they hadn’t seen for many years, swapping stories and reminiscing, as well as enjoying the Museum’s displays.

Mary River Festival – family river fun day THERE’S not much you can get for a gold coin these days, but the Family River Fun Day on Saturday October 22nd is value for money. Kybong, south of Gympie to host this once a year event as the first part of the Mary River Festival. Starting at 1pm the whole family can be kept entertained and occupied with activities which include swimming, canoeing, rockskipping, games, food, live music, dancing, evening performances with a solar-powered laser show, bonfire and camping. Les is very keen to encourage people to come down and enjoy the Mary River, whether you’re in the water, on the water, or beside the water. “There’s so much to enjoy with our river, and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves here last year. It was great family fun with non stop activities”, said Les who is passionate about the Mary River and its people. “We’re only 10 minutes drive out of Gympie heading south along the

Bruce highway, so it’s close for anyone from Gympie to come here. It’s also worth the trip if you have to travel a bit further. Campers are welcome.” While the children are being active, adults can laze on the riverbank, under a marquee, go canoeing or swimming, or even plant some trees. It is best if you can plan for a day and evening to make the most of the entertainment on offer. No need to think about dinner, with snacks available all day including wood fire pizza, sausage sandwiches, cakes tea and coffee. The barbeque will get going at approximately at 6pm, followed by music by the Tapper Girls and the Homestead Band. It will be amazing to see the solar-powered laser show at 9pm as it lights up the banks of the Mary River and then sit around the campfire. Les is offering overnight camping for free where you can wake up to the

McKisko at Cooran Hall BRISBANE-based singer songwriter McKisko (aka Helen Franzmann) grew up on a Macadamia Nut Farm in Cooran. Helen has recently released her stellar single Good Grief and has been touring the East Coast of Australia – playing shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide to support the release. Released on Monday 3 October 2011, Good Grief is the first tantalizing installation in a series of five seven inches that will be released over the next eighteen months. Each release will be a limited pressing of 500, with the vinyl and digital downloads available from: www.mckisko.com An accomplished musician, McKisko has performed with the likes of Bon Iver, Juana Molina, Tiny Vipers, Jose Gonzales and Robert Forster. As a child, Helen performed many times at the Cooran Municipal Hall and has decided, fittingly, to end her East Coast tour where it all started - in Cooran. Come down and see Helen play a very special show with Melbourne band ‘Roller One’ at the Cooran Hall on Saturday 22 October at 7pm. Tickets will be available at the door for $10.

Tupperware fundraiser at Pomona State School

MYSTERIOUS chalk artists were at work in Pomona last week. Pavements and noticeboards had us thinking about ‘what is a community’. Chalk was left around for people to add their drawings and thoughts. I wonder if it was done by the same crew who knitted the tree decorations in Pomona earlier this year?

POMONA State School is holding a tupperware catalogue party during the month of October, to help raise funds/gain containers for the hall kitchen, to be able to store ingredients for class cooking activities. If you would like to help the school reach their goal, by either purchasing tupperware or by hosting a party yourself, we would love to hear from you!! FOLLOWING the overwhelming success of their first seminar, which was held at the Cooroy Library, Vegan Era are hosting another one at the library on October 22nd at 9am, to share the health and environmental benefits of leading a compassionate, vegan lifestyle. Vegan Era is run by a passionate Sunshine Coast couple, David Rafter and Amanda Rootsey. “Mandy and Dave speak so beautifully and passionately about how the food on our plates affects our inside and outside worlds. They don’t judge, they don’t patronize – they just present these important, widely hidden truths. I left the last Vegan Era seminar feeling empowered to be in a position to make a difference,” said Jess Ainscough, the Sunshine Coast’s very own Wellness Warrior

(www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au). David is the youngest brother of tennis champion, Patrick Rafter, and was nominated for an Earth Hour Award earlier in the year for his environmental work. He has a wealth of knowledge on what we can be doing to tread lighter on our planet and do our part in the fight against global warming. Maximise your 2011 health fund rebate COOROY optometrists Heather McLeod and Jenny Currie are reminding all local residents who have extras coverage with a private health fund to make the most of their health fund membership before it expires at the end of the year. Heather from optometry@cooroy says most annual health funds optical benefits expire at the end of December and a lot of people may have not used up their rebates or claimed their full entitlements. “Don’t wait until it is too late” she advises. “Buying spectacles or contact lenses at optometry@cooroy and claiming your rebate is fast, easy and convenient as you don’t need to fill

out any extra paperwork or visit your health fund branch as we can claim directly through HiCaps on your behalf” Jenny says. “All you need to do is pay any gap that may remain.” Express your individuality and sense of style this summer and take advantage of your unused health rebate by purchasing a pair of stunning spectacles, prescription sunglasses or contact lenses before the end of the year. optometry@cooroy is located at 62 Maple Street, just up from the private hospital. Get back in the saddle HORSE-riding is a very common activity among hinterland residents and is a great form of exercise. Back pain is also a common complaint, so, when is horse-riding beneficial and when it is harmful? What exercise should you do to help prevent back pain from riding and reduce your time off the horse. Riding with a good technique uses most muscles in the body. Sitting on a saddle with a controlled, upright posture requires the core muscles to stabilise the body against the move-

ments of the horse. This type of activity is great for the spine, as long as good posture and core stability are maintained. Problems occur when people are suffering with back pain and have lost their core control before they start riding, or when they are riding with poor posture and control or for longer periods than their fitness allows. Getting a horse to move in certain ways under command requires whole body strength along with core stability. As physio’s we tend to see more injuries from

looking after horses than we do from riding. The manual work required to look after a horse requires lots of lifting, bending and twisting. These repetitive actions are known to be harmful to the spine and often lead to injury. Be aware of your spine when you are cleaning and maintaining your horses. Use your legs more than your spine for lifting and turning and consider a back support if you have had a previous injury. Most people ride on a

weekend basis and may not be physically fit enough to cope with the length of ride and postural control required. Having good cardiovascular fitness is essential, so this type of exercise (eg. Walking, swimming, running, cycling) should be incorporated into your lifestyle. Core stability exercises such as pilates and fitball exercises will ensure that the postural muscles have the endur-

ance required to support the spine during horseriding. If you are already suffering with back pain, it is essential to have these muscles working well before you return to riding. Seek advice from a physiotherapist early to avoid chronic back pain or time out of the saddle. Craig and Rebecca Steele operate Hinteractive Physio and can be contacted on 5442 5556.

Pain forced you out of the saddle?

Cooroy went walking for Pink October THE people of Cooroy came out in pink to join the Pink Precinct Fun Trail on Thursday October 13. The event was coordinated by the Cooroy Library with the generous support of the local businesses. Many locals and visitors, including parents, students, teachers and business owners, rose early and completed a trail around Cooroy in the name of fundraising and awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. There were pink fashions, facepainting and great food, all for the good of the cause. Sam Naudin inspired us with her first hand account of her journey as a Breast Cancer survivor then awarded the prizes for the Trail. The Bonus points prize for the Pink Precinct Fun Trail was won by Jarrod Thompson.

High tea at Yabbaloumba Retreat for breast cancer WHAT started as a “because we can” plan has blossomed into a pink spring treat run by volunteers. First plans were to have a high tea in the grounds of the luxury Yabbaloumba Retreat in the Mary Valley but with the usual aplomb of Kenilworth region residents it has morphed into a fiesta of fun, glamour, frivolity and special treats all for a good cause. It will be staged on Sunday, October 23 to co-incide with Breast Cancer Awareness month hence the Chicks in the Sticks pink ribbon high tea. The women running the event have all been touched by breast cancer either personally or through family. Australian women have a 1 in 9 lifetime risk of developing breast cancer and it is vital money is raised for research into the disease. The volunteers Kelly Hoyes, Barbara Campbell, Lolie Murtagh, Leanne Keogh, Toni Gitsham, Johanna Van Genderen and Monica Adams want the upmarket high tea to be loads of fun and have arranged an af-

ternoon tea with all the trimmings overlooking the picturesque Conondale ranges and national park. Group spokesperson Ms Hoyes said because of the nature of the event it was vital that people pre-booked their tickets. “We are limiting the numbers because we want this to be a very special event where women can spoil themselves and raise money for cancer research at the same time,“ Ms Hoyes said. Tea will be served in china cups so get your pinkies ready and of course the dress code is pink. If you have your own fine china tea cup bring it along to what will be an exquisite afternoon. There will be a fashion parade, including hats just in time for the Melbourne Cup, health and beauty treats, an auction, a complimentary glass of pink bubbles on arrival and of course you can decorate your table in the pink theme. To secure your $35 ticket contact Kelly on 5446 0155 or Loli on 5446 0222.

Noosa Boat Club going strong on Lake Macdonald NOOSA Boat Club has just held their second AGM at Lake Macdonald after a very successful year of competition and learn to row. One of the exciting things to happen to our club was to be successfull in our applications for two grants from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. The first grant was for the training of new coaches. We put 10 volunteer rowers through their Level 1 coaching course. Our club now boasts volunteer coaches from all 3 Levels accredited through Rowing Queensland. That is a lot of experience in one club and all are more than happy to pass that expertise on to willing new members. The second grant went

to the purchase of new sweep and sculling oars. These now equip

us to extend our club to new members. Noosa Boat Club is

A journey unfinished . . . ‘I’ll be back’ AFTER more than nine years, local boxing trainer Mark Evans, of Impact boxing fame, stepped back into the ring himself to represent Queensland in the Australian Masters Games held in Adelaide from October 7-16. The fight fell on the anniversary of the death of Alex Slade, one of Impact Boxing’s young and upcoming boxers who tragically died in the ring last year. Mark fought through to finals with a plus 1 win in both the first and second bouts but unfortunately lost the 3rd fight in what he says was a ‘questionable decision’ to one of the local boxers to bring home the Silver medal. His motivation now is to ensure he’s up to the task at the next Masters Games which will be held in Alice Springs in 2013. “I feel I have unfinished business and I’m extremely motivated,” says Mark. In the lead up to this event, Mark put his body through an intensive training regime for 15 weeks and managed to drop 15kg off his body weight. “I’d like to thank the staff at Corooy Family Practice and Hinteractive Physio for ensuring I was in the best condition I could possibly be in, and my training and fitness motivator Owen Shipp for his dedication and support. Also Gozzo for his support and importantly my wife Mel and kids and the entire Impact family. I couldn’t have done it without them.
