Huge local support for breast cancer month OCTOBER is ‘Breast Cancer’ month and sadly many of us have been touched by this insideous disease in some way. Cooroy and hinterland residents have once again started fundraising in earnest with many sporting and social events being organised to support this worthy cause. Cooroy lady golfers are busy preparing for their ‘Tee up for Breast Cancer’ golf day on Thursday 23rd October. Gary and Kym Logan of Noosa River and Canal Cruises offered their boat to help these ladies in their fundraising efforts and supporters, which included members of the Pomona Pacers Walk for Heart group, were recently treated to an evening cruise on the beautiful Noosa River. With a full compliment on board all dressed in pink for breast cancer and red for a healthy heart they turned many heads cruising by the Gympie Terrace waterfront. “Pink champagne flowed to help the supporters ‘sail’ down the Noosa River and certainly helped stir a happy, celebratory mood on board,” said organiser Patsy Fayne. “More sobering thoughts were held for family and friends affected by cancer, especially Breast Cancer … an all too common

I had better explain I suppose I have been stopped several times in the street, even phoned up at home, And asked if my latest effort was my retirement Rag poem, It was kind of those good people, to pay me such attention, Flattering, too, but finishing up was not my intention. My aim was only to relate the sad tale, Of my visit to hospital, and how I was getting so frail.

At the same time I must admit, that the words and the rhymes, Don’t come so easily, as they did in earlier times. I have to be careful, not to repeat pre-written verses, And not talk too much, of pretty girls, and kind nurses. Politicians, of course, are always fair game, With their everlasting excuses why they’re never to blame!! So I beg for your patience, I’ll write nothing silly I hope, If I do, I’m sure the editor, will capably cope, My tattered old brain is always liable to malfunction, The misplaced adjective, the disappearing conjunction. I can only trust that the poetry makes sense, But if it doesn’t, then old age, is my only defence. Jim Dunstan A man has several childhoods – I think my third was the best.

Shire boundaries now certain SC MAYOR Mark Jamieson has welcomed the decision by Local Government Minister David Crisafulli that further changes to Sunshine Coast boundaries will not proceed. In July, Sunshine Coast Council voted unanimously to keep its boundaries the same to protect the region and ensure certainty, stability and unity and safeguard the interests of people in Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs. Mayor Jamieson said Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs had been part of the Sunshine Coast Council area and former Maroochy local government area for more than a century. “Their unique character and attributes are celebrated by Council and this region. Council welcomes the Minister’s news as we continue to service, support and resource these communities as we have done 1890,” Mayor Jamieson said. “I have spoken to the Minister and he has confirmed he has written to residents who made submissions regarding the proposed boundary change. “Minister Crisafulli’s decision is welcomed as it will ease the concerns and confusion that has been generated for many residents about the potential for a boundary change. Since adopting its position, Council has received numerous letters and emails of support from residents in Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs, welcoming Council’s stance and indicating that they wish to see their communities remain within the Sunshine Coast Council area. “In my view, the Minister’s decision further reinforces that Council has taken the correct stance on this matter in the interests of the affected communities and the region as a whole. This council is getting on with the job, striving to make Sunshine Coast the most sustainable place in Australia – a sustainable economy, environment and community. “We look forward to working with communities across the region to deliver that goal.”

We will be back for sure!!! BRICKBATS to walkers who walk with their back to the traffic and bouquets to the ones who know better. BRICKBATS Please all you early morning walkers - learn some road sense (especially those who live in Cudgerie). I can remember a policeman coming to the school when I was a child and he told us if there’s no footpath, to walk on the right side of the road facing the traffic. We’re had a couple of near-misses from going round blind corners and suddenly being confronted by walkers with their back to us on the left side of the road. They can’t see the traffic approaching them and it’s usually made worse by the fact that most of them are walking in the middle of the road. BOUQUET to Tyron Brown. Council green waste bins for rural towns NOOSA Council is expanding the garden waste collection service to rural townships to counter the problem of green waste- lawn clippings, leaves, branches, twigs, weeds and palm fronds- going to landfill. Rural residents are being offered the service for a more environmentallyfriendly solution to managing their garden waste. This garden waste collection is an optional service. These lime-green lidded waste bins are collected from homes every fortnight on the alternative week to the yellow lidded recycling bin. Currently, most Noosa residents either fill their household rubbish bins with green waste which goes to landfill, or take

their green waste to the tip in a trailer themselves. Neither method is satisfactory. Green waste in landfill produces greenhouse gas emissions and takes up landfill space. Trips to the tip are expensive - petrol, tip disposal fees, trailer use and registration costs, and the cost of the time taken. The green waste bins cost $65 per annum for a fortnightly collection. Once ordered from Council, a new green waste bin will be delivered in approximately 4 weeks’ time. The green waste collected by council is shredded, aged, mulched and made available to residents, free of charge, for use as garden mulch.

Robert C. Hilditch D.C.

Over 3,000 coastal residents already use the garden waste service, saving money and creating time for other activities. The landfill site benefits through reduced organic load and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. People and the environment both win.

Democracy - the Noosa way NOOSA Council is set to become a Queensland and national leader in sharing decision-making with its community. A Noosa Community Jury of 24 randomly selected citizens will be used to consider certain complex and weighty local issues. Council could either ask for a recommendation, or in some circumstances Council may agree beforehand to implement the jury’s decision. Mayor Noel Playford says the Community Jury will not take over the Councillors’ role, but will complement their work when everyday citizens, given time and access to all the information they need, in independently facilitated forums, can make an informed decision that earns community trust. A citizens’ jury statistically reflecting the whole community will be randomly selected by an independent agency, not by the Council. “These are the vital ingredients” Mr Playford said, “random selection, time and access to information and facilitated forums, independent of the Council.” The Mayor described the jury as “innovative, genuine democracy”. “In the de-amalgamation battle, our community was not just fighting for the return of their council, but also for a bigger say in local decision-making.” The new democratic structure in Noosa will be organised in partnership with the newDemocracy Foundation, a respected, national research foundation made up of former leading politicians and academic experts in the field. Executive Director of the newDemocracy Foundation Iain Walker says the jury

concept has been successful overseas, and in trials around the country with local and state governments, where they’ve earned strong community support. “We think people have more trust in public decisions when they see more everyday people involved - the same way we trust the criminal jury” Mr Walker said. He said “Governments can be held to ransom by single issue activists, while governments everywhere can be guilty of consultation processes where they already have the final result firmly fixed in mind. The jury process helps to protect us from those pressures and to achieve a trusted outcome for the whole community.” Mr Walker praised the Noosa decision as “a first for Queensland, and of national importance because it brings the practical and trusted democracy of the jury system inside the local decision-making process to a greater degree than anyone has previously attempted.” He said “Noosa Council has taken a leadership role here, and newDemocracy is delighted to be able to assist in discovering how we make more trusted public decisions.” Mayor Playford said issues that best fit the model of a community jury are complex ones that need time to sift through competing arguments. “The future of waste management in Noosa Shire is one that could fit the bill, and perhaps the contentious issue of responsibility for houseboat hulks left to pollute our river.” “We could see both of these issues tackled by a Noosa Community Jury during 2015.”

THOSE who own a business think about ways of improving and strengthening their business every day. You probably don’t think about how it might cope without you, or indeed how you might cope without it. But just like every other sort of insurance, business risk protection is something you need to think about and plan for in case of future need. Try considering the 3Ds – determine value, decide strategy, document agreement. • Determine the value of your business - How much is the business worth? - Is the value based on an agreed formula, dollar value or an independent assessment? • Decide who should be left with what after the departure of a business party - Who takes ownership of the business? - What are the family’s needs and expectations? - What are the

business’s needs and expectations? - What is the family’s ongoing role in the management of the business? - What is involved in the day-to-day management of the business? • Document the agreement - A solicitor can help business owners set up a Buy/Sell Agreement to document how an outgoing proprietor’s business interest will be transferred to the continuing proprietor(s) upon a trigger event. Insurance is one of many solutions, so speak to a specialist to help you determine whether it’s the most appropriate and costeffective option for your business protection needs. When is a good time to shop for business risk insurance? If you are sitting on the fence or think you’ll get around to it some day, take a minute and ask yourself the following questions?

• What would happen to your business if you were sick or injured? • Will your current insurances, including those within super funds, be enough to pay-off your debts (eg. loan repayments) and keep your family comfortable for the rest of their lives? • What is the cost to your business if you talked to a specialist about putting in place the required strategy and funding to protect you, your family and the business? If you would like to discuss this type of insurance, please do not hesitate to contact me and I can arrange an obligation free consultation with one of Bendigo Bank’s specialists. The origins of countrynoosa.com and the Country Noosa Forum

IN the last edition, we mentioned an initiative to set up CountryNoosa.com and the Country Noosa Forum. We asked Dick Barnes to tell us about the origins of this activity and what it is trying to achieve. Some years ago, Dick and his wife, Kim, fell in love with the Noosa Shire for the magic combination it has of sea, country, and lifestyle. It is a long story, but they ended up wanting a lovely family homestead in the Noosa Hinterland that they could enjoy with their growing fam-

ily. As Dick says “that is when we got carried away and embarked on a second career as beef farmers”. Bellbird Homestead is a 400 acre property at Ridgewood west of Cooroy. The property now combines a sustainable beef cattle operation with a family homestead and environmentally significant areas. Ridges and gullies slope down to creeks and flats all of which have significant environmental value. Extensive paddock fencing, off stream cattle watering, environ-

mentally friendly crossings, and sensitive paddock improvements have been undertaken. Rotational grazing techniques are used to improve carrying capacity sustainably. Economies of scale are an important factor. Through various agreements, Bellbird Homestead farms a further 600 acres giving a total of 1000 acres and 400 breeding cows producing pasture fed beef. As a result of the rotational grazing approach, all creeks and gullies have been protected with riparian boundaries and extensive re-vegeta-

tion has been undertaken to provide nature corridors from the State Forest through the property. So what has this got to do with the Country Noosa Forum? “Well, while we were developing Bellbird, we had a great deal lot of real help from all sorts of directions” says Dick. “This included farm planning, pasture management, breeding tips and a wide range of grants that helped us with the sustainability and conservation aspects. Our Farm Manager has done a magnificent job helping us build and operate the farm side. In conservation and sustainability we had great help from Landcare, MRCCC, BMRG and the DPI. However, the world has now changed and the sort of help we had is now in short supply. For example, grants are no longer easily available and Government Extension Officers have not been replaced as they

retire”. Dick got together with Rod Ritchie and they put up the CountryNoosa.com website. The thrust is to encourage primary production in the country areas of the Shire and its surroundings in line with “local food, sustainably produced”. They are trying to get like-minded people together to broaden knowledge and support each other. They kicked off with a survey to assess interest and this has proved very valuable. The vision and the survey results can be seen on the website. Top of the list was getting together and, interestingly, coping with weeds and pest animals. So, given these results, the Country Noosa Forum will kick off with a field day at Bellbird on 27th September. The numbers planning to attend are very encouraging including great support from Council. We will let you know how it went in the next edition. Dick Barnes

“Remember When…” Photo Competition THE annual photo competition sponsored by Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy is a really popular component of the Christmas in Cooroy program with hundreds of entries received each year which all go on display in the Butter Factory Arts Centre throughout December. We can’t wait to see what amazing photos are entered this year. It is a competition for all ages with past winners including children, teenagers and older entrants,” explained Christmas in Cooroy Event Manager, Danielle Taylor. Art for art’s sake - Noosa Show style THIS year’s Art Exhibition at the Noosa Country Show was a resounding success, with strong numbers taking in the best our part of the world has to offer. Nina Shadforth, Director of Noosa Galleries officiated at the opening of the exhibition with inspiring words to the Artists to ‘maintain their momentum’. Nina said the quality of entries this year were exceptional and she is looking forward to returning for more in 2015. In a strong show of support, artists and a host of sponsors and donors who supported the new-look, new-direction exhibition witnessed the large crosssection of local talent first-hand. Cr. Sandy Bolton further enhanced her growing reputation as a wonderful MC as she introduced eleven prestigious awards. Each was presented by an impressive array of individuals including: Geoff Edwards from Cooroy

(L-R) Tina Bernard, Keith Haining, Nina Shadforth, Geoff Edwards, Cr Sandy Bolton, Sandra Fox-Spencer and Grand Champion Janey Richards gather Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Tina Bernard from Cooroy RSL and the Hon. Warren Truss, Deputy Prime Minister. The standard of the art and photography entries were commended by the judges and Art Presenters alike. There was a lovely ceramic donation from artist, Penny

McIntyre and the Lyn Fraser-Roberts painting was raffled off. Both Acts of generosity from the artists was greatly appreciated. Many more local sponsors who provided drinks and many other services must be thanked and their efforts applauded. Janey Richards was the Grand Champion for the 2014

and truly came to life during this year’s celebrations. It’s hoped now that now the exhibition is over for 2014, local businesses and galleries will embrace the artworks and adorn their spaces with these quality artworks so everyone can enjoy and purchase these treasures all year round.

NATIVE Australian Gliders undergoing rehabilitation in the Noosa Hinterland will soon be gliding freely if the 2014 Miss Noosa Showgirls have anything to do with it. This year Wildcare Australia’s Glider Rehabilitation Enclosure Project was chosen as the cofunding recipient for the Noosa Country Show Miss Showgirl fundraising efforts. The purpose-built large enclosure will be designed to allow native Greater Gliders, Yellow Bellied Gliders, Sugar and Squirrel gliders quality gliding practice before they are released back into the wild. The Noosa and Sunshine Coast region is home to 5 species of native glider – the Greater Glider, Yellow-bellied Glider, Sugar Glider, Squirrel Glider and the tiny Feathertail Glider. Domestic animal attacks, entrapment on barbed wire fences and tree felling are the common reasons that dozens of gliders require rescue and rehabilitation in the region each year. Wildcare Australia is a not-for-profit voluntary wildlife rehabilitation organisation with over 500 members across South East Queensland. They treat over 5000 native animals each year.

Controlling feral dogs RESIDENTS in the rural areas of the Noosa Shire whose livestock or families are being harassed or attacked by wild dogs, dingos or foxes should contact Customer Service at Noosa Council and provide detailed information about the nature of the problem. Council’s pest animal control officers will contact the property owner to discuss the problem and work with the landholder on a pest animal control program. It is important to note that rural property owners have a responsibility to control feral animals on their land. Council supports property owners activities to control feral animals by providing information, traps, arranging baiting programs and assisting with humane removal. When a council program is undertaken to control feral animals within a

specific area, appropriate signage is erected to inform neighbouring residents and visitors of the actions being taken. Over the past 8 months, Council has been actively engaged in mitigating the feral dog problem in the western area of the Shire by removing 38 feral dogs . Council will continue to be proactive and work to reduce the feral dog problem in that area. It is important to be aware that unrestrained, unregistered dogs that harass stock can be destroyed. Owners are encouraged to ensure that their domestic dogs are not allowed to roam free, hunt in packs and chase or injure stock. For more information contact Noosa Council Customer Service Phone 07 5329 6500 or email mail@noosa.qld.gov.au<mailto:mail@noosa.qld.gov.au>

IF you are over 55 and potentially eligible for a Centrelink benefit, you need to read this. You may need to take action. Will the changes reduce the amount you receive? From 1 January 2015 new Centrelink rules could affect your government age pension entitlements for the rest of your life. Let’s look at what the changes could mean for you. Have you spoken with a financial adviser recently? It pays to be aware that if you receive a government age pension and set up or make changes to an account-based pension after 1 January 2015, you may be worse off. You have limited time to work out whether reviewing or setting-up an account-based pension before 1 January 2015 will help you—it’s a good time to seek advice. What will the changes mean for you? All account-based pensions (ABPs)— including allocated pensions—set-up after 1 January 2015 will be assessed the same way as other financial assets. So if you’re receiving a government age pension it may be reduced as a result. This also applies to those ABPs set up before this date that are not eligible to preserve the old rules. If you’re eligible, it’s not too late to set up an ABP before 1 January 2015 under the current rules. In fact, doing so may preserve your government age pension entitlements. Are you eligible? If you have money in super but you haven’t set up an ABP yet, you may be able to preserve or maybe even increase your government pension entitlements if you are:

• Male or Female and aged over 65 at 31 December 2014 • Receiving a government age pension by 1 January 2015. When’s the best time to set-up an ABP? As an example let’s take a look at Jane and Michael’s situation to see how the changes to Centrelink will work. Jane and Michael are about to retire in November 2014 as they will reach age pension age of 65. They own their own home and have super of $$150,000 (Jane) and $135,000 (Michael) and no other assets. If they leave their money in super then Centrelink will deem it to earn 2%pa on the first $79,600 and 3.5% pa on the balance (ie income of $14,481). They are currently entitled to an age pension of $32,337 pa combined under the income test. If the deeming rate was to increase to say 4% and 5.5% respectively, then their age pension would reduce to $29,487 pa combined, a drop of $2,850. On the other hand, if Jane and Michael used their super balances to start ABPs before 1 January 2015 and draw the minimum income of $14,250 combined, then only $31 is counted under the income test and they would receive the full age pension of $33,035. This is $698 pa more than if they left their money in super. The reason for this is that under the current income test for ABPs, an amount is ignored each year worked out by dividing the initial start balance by their life expectancy at that time. In this case Jane and Michael can draw up to $6,938 pa and $7,281 pa before anything is counted under the income test. And better still – if the deeming rate was to increase to say 4% and 5.5% respectively, then their age pension would not be impacted and remain at the full level.

But if they wait until 1 January 2015 to transfer their super money to ABPs, then they will be subject to the new deeming income test for ABPs, which will deem their ABPs to earn 2%pa on the first $79,600 and 3.5% pa on the balance (ie income of $14,481). This is no different to leaving their money in Super and they will receive a reduced age pension of $32,337 pa. What if you make changes to your existing ABP? Any changes you make to your ABP after 1 January 2015 could make your ABP assessable under the new rules—for example, if you: · Change your ABP provider · Combine multiple ABPs or consolidate super into your ABP · Add or remove a reversionary beneficiary (a person you’ve nominated to receive your pension income when you die) · Cease receipt of a government payment Start a death benefit pension for anyone other than a reversionary beneficiary. It’s important to seek financial advice about whether setting up or reviewing your ABP now will help you preserve any age pension entitlements you may have. *Chad Monroe & Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004 are Authorised Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. Eumundi Sculpture Prize Winner announced ORGANISERS of the Eumundi Sculpture Prize are excited to announce the winner of the inaugural Eumundi Sculpture Prize. In this first year a large number of submissions for the Prize were received from sculptors nationwide. The theme was an important aspect of Eumundi’s development as a town – the Eumundi Timber Industry. The entries were shortlisted to 10, who then went on to make a maquette of their design (a small 3D version). The Award Announcement was held at The Fig Tree @ Eumundi Restaurant on Sunday 14 September and was well attended by art lovers and many of the artists who entered were present. The maquettes on display at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre

where moved to the Fig Tree just for this event and transformed the restaurant into a sculpture gallery for the afternoon. A panel of three arts professionals judged the Prize and their spokesperson Michael Hawker from the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art gave the audience great comments and feedback about all the shortlisted artists’ maquettes before announcing the winner as Hew Chee Fong with his entry titled ‘Sustainable’. Taken from the artist statement the sculpture - ‘Sustainable is a steel-like, totemic granite sculpture conceived to celebrate and commemorate methods and systems and that won’t deplete resources or harm natural cycles’. This years’ winner will now create a final large sculpture that will be placed in the Caplick Park area.

Planned to be an annual event – over the years Eumundi will become home to many wonderful sculptures. The official unveiling of the winning sculpture and the announcement of People’s Choice will be held on Friday 12 December at an Original Eumundi Markets night market with a celebration for the whole family. Everyone is invited to vote for the People’s Choice Award either at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre or via the website until 10 December 2014.

Free fun with smart table at Cooroy Library COOROY Library has opened its doors for anyone to try the new and exciting smart table. This great piece of technological brilliance is an interactive tabletop that can download apps and works as a giant tablet. Collections and Programs Co-ordinator Tracey King said the table is already proving popular with the workshops being run using the device and the library is now encouraging individuals and community groups to come in and experience this new technology. ‘People are amazed with the fact that more than one person can ‘touch’ the table at the same time. It’s fantastic to see lots of people sitting together working on the same jigsaw,’ she said. ‘The interactive table that looks like it’s come from a sci-fi movie, will be used in many up-coming library workshops and is now available at Cooroy Library for people

to come in and have a play.’ ‘New technologies seem to be getting smaller and smaller, which can be quite challenging for some people and the great thing about this table is that you can learn in a group and create as a group, taking away the isolation and scariness of using new gadgets on your own.’ The table has a 32 multi-touch capability and is ready with downloaded jigsaws, games, drum sets and other amazing apps for the public to have a play. ‘The potential for what we can do with our new favourite toy is so exciting. We’re so thrilled to be able to offer this great service to the community.’ The smart table was funded by the Queensland Government through State Library of Queensland’s Technology Trendsetters program. Magpies on the swoop NOW is peak season for magpie nesting and residents are encouraged to be cautious. A Noosa Council spokesperson said that reports of swooping magpies are on the rise. ‘Most magpies do not attack, but during breeding season some individual birds can become aggressive in defending their nest’. The best way is to avoid walking or cycling through the magpies nesting area during breeding season, which lasts several weeks. If you must travel through a known nesting area, then there are some simple precautions you can take: Travel in groups; Wear a hat and sunglasses or hold an umbrella over your head; Dismount from a bike and walk quickly through the affected area to avoid the risk of falling; Attach cable ties to bike helmets to distract the birds when riding. In response to a magpie complaint, Council can assess the situation and arrange appropriate signage. Council would encourage residents to learn to live with magpies. In some rare cases, a contractor may need to be engaged to remove a bird. For further information contact Council on 5329 6500.

NO longer is it acceptable for patrons of licensed premises to be served alcohol to the point where they become intoxicated. Strict laws governing the responsible service of alcohol were introduced several years ago, which makes it an offence to serve liquor to a person who is adversely affected by alcohol within a licensed premises. Gone are the days were pubs and clubs filled people full of booze then turfed them out onto the street to become the problem of the public and police. Many examples of people drinking to access then creating mayhem on the streets and in their cars have led to the creation of these laws. Hotel and Club Licensees and Managers as well as employees face hefty fines and loss of liquor licenses if they serve people who are noticeably affected by liquor so don’t blame staff members or management if you are cut off from being served alcohol and served a glass of water instead. Pubs and Clubs are very aware of their responsibilities in this regard and licensed premises are monitored by police attending to ensure compliance. Past court decisions have held Licensed Premises as liable for the actions of persons when they leave their premises. Management and staff have been successfully sued when things go

wrong and people are killed and seriously injured from the actions of these people. On Saturday the 20th of September, 2014 at about 6.30am the Cooroy Butchery in Maple St, Cooroy was severely damaged by fire. The fire has been deemed as suspicious by fire investigators with investigations continuing so anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Maple Street or Maple Lane at about 6am Saturday morning and saw something suspicious please contact local police or contact crime stoppers on 1800 333 000. A Family business has been greatly affected by this malicious act so anyone with information please come forward to help solve this matter. The Bruce Highway upgrade is set to enter a new phase with new lane markings and significant changes in traffic flows in the vicinity of the southern Bruce Hwy interchange into and out of the Cooroy Township. One major change will see Myall street, which is the road that travels south and merges onto the previously 110km/h Bruce Hwy reduced in speed down to 70 km/h to allow for traffic to merge into a single live lane of the Bruce highway travelling south. Previous to these changes all traffic has been able to build up speed to 110km/h

and then merge safely into a dedicated lane travelling south. The redevelopment of the highway has meant that this section of the highway has been temporarily reduced from two lanes down to one lane to allow for construction crews to have safe access to their work sites. Drivers who regularly travel this route need to be very aware that instead of merging into their own dedicated lane they will now be merging into a live lane with all south bound Bruce Highway traffic now in the one lane which may make it more difficult than previous to merge. Drivers need to use common sense and obey normal merging rules when merging onto the highway. The new merging lane will be fully compliant with safety standards and will be the same as most other merging lanes onto the highway. As an added safety measure Bruce Highway traffic will be reduced in speed down to 70km/h until half way down Nandroya Hill before returning to 110km/ h so the impact upon your journey will be minimal. Police will be performing radar within these work sites to ensure compliance with speed zones for the safety of workman and motorist alike. Please comply with Traffic Controllers and signs as they are playing an integral role in keeping these roadwork’s sites a safe place to work and travel through.

Discovering New Authors: Carl Hiaasen WITH time being as precious as it is for most of us, the temptation to just stick with the authors you know and enjoy is understandable. After all, we’ve all had the experience of gambling on a new author for a bit of holiday reading, only to throw the book away in disgust halfway through. And, of course, our friend’s favourite ever book, which leaves us doubting what we knew about them... Fair warning, I’m not saying you’ll enjoy the books I recommend either – but it’s always worth a try! Carl Hiaasen was previously an investigative journalist in Florida with a particular interest in the shady (often political) dealings that led to massive developments and rolling golf courses popping up in pristine parts of the Everglades and the Keys. This sense of outrage at the damage done to the waterways and wildlife habitats is something that permeates his novels, and the bad guys – the real estate developers, the political fixers, the racist rednecks and bullies – inevitably come to a decidedly nasty end. You can’t help but feel that the lawfully dubious actions of his heroes are the kind of thing he’d have liked to have done. And probably thought about doing. A lot. Which is not to say his novels are nothing more than a rant against development, or a denouncement of Florida and its rampant tourism. These are intelligent, gripping crime stories, full of savagely funny dialogue and

peopled with casts of idealistic misfits and obsessive criminals. Whether it’s the one-eyed ex-Governor of California hiding out in the mangrove swamps in a shower hat and a kilt while plotting the kidnapping and re-education of a property developer (involving sea urchins), or the lottery winner out to get her stolen ticket back from the aspiring white supremacists who stole it and killed her turtle, the characters are drawn with warmth and sympathy, and an eye for the more ridiculous aspects of human nature. The bad guys get what’s coming to them, and the good(ish) guys live on with an unsettling feeling that there’s a lot to do to save the world still – even their small corner of it. You can’t accuse Carl Hiaasen of high literature, but he’s undeniably a master of the fun, fast-paced crime caper. His books are perfect for a weekend or holiday read, satisfying and undemanding. They’re also a long way from the cliched crime thrillers that seem to abound these days – he’s a truly original writer and never disappoints. My only caveat is that it’s best not to read his books in public – giggling quietly to yourself is never reassuring for others. Find Carl Hiassen books at “of Cabbages & Kings”, 3/14 Maple Lane, Cooroy. Call us on 07 5447 7090, or find us online at www.ofcabbagesandkings.com.au. Cooroy-Noosa Family and Local History Group THE “Show and Tell” morning held by CooroyNoosa Family and Local History Group was a great success. Edna Smith told us about her baking efforts using her mother-in-law’s rolling pin, other stories such as “How Swimming Put Tewantin on the Map” and “Travelling Folk and Sweet Makers” were examples of how interesting our family history can be, but a member’s collection of her grandmother’s undergarments had us amused and amazed. The Annual General Meeting was held in September with Bev Warner elected as President, Margaret Rickard as Vice President, Georgina Day as Treasurer and Julie Kinloch as Secretary. All members thank them for their hard work, dedication and endless enthusiasm maintaining the Group. Bev Warner will hold a Q&A Workshop at 1.00pm on Saturday, 11th October, it is a chance to solve some of the research brickwalls or tricky computer site problems. The monthly meeting will follow the

ASTUTE buyers are seeing the potential of Cooroy’s newest housing estate development Erindale Park, located in the prestigious Lake Macdonald precinct. Just minutes from Cooroy’s CBD, Erindale Park delivers a range of impressive lifestyle benefits that people of all ages can enjoy. Alisa Wythes of Wythes Real Estate said Erindale Park was an outstanding opportunity offering affordable entry level packages in a highly sought after location. “We are so proud to be involved with the Erindale Park Estate…it exudes everything peaceful, country living is about,” she said. “I have a real passion for the area and know just how much of a wonderful place this is to reside.” A born and bred local, Alisa Wythes has established a reputation as one of the Hinterland’s most highly regarded real estate professionals. “My family has been involved in real estate locally for over 25 years - it is in my DNA,” she said. “So when my mum Trish and I had the opportunity to start our own agency a few years ago we jumped at the chance and we have not looked back.” With extensive knowledge of the local community and the hinterland property market, the Wythes team know a good deal when they see one. “Erindale Park will be such a special place to live. The owners of the estate also live in Cooroy and understand what a great place it is. This shows throughout the development,” Alisa said. “As well as its location in the prestigious Lake Macdonald precinct, Erindale Park will have beautiful park land for all residents to enjoy.” One of the lucky buyers, who got in early at Erindale Park, is 26 year old Daniel Williamson from Tewantin. “I had been looking for a place for over six months and noticed that prices were on there rise, so when the first release at Erindale Park was available I jumped in,” Daniel said. “I was able to get the first home buyers grant and a stamp duty concession, which saved me about $20,000. Now I can move out on my own and look forward to having my own space.” According to Alisa Wythes the only way to secure land at Erindale Park is to act fast. “There is currently only one parcel of land avail-

able at Erindale Park, with all other sold,” she said. Lot 3, which is currently available has a lovely easterly aspect, the earthworks have been done, so it would be a nice easy build. The land is available from $215,000 or a house and land package from $438,000.” New land releases at Erindale Park will be available soon. For more information about Erindale Park visit the website www.erindalepark.com.au and sign up for regular updates via our E-newsletter or contact Alisa Wythes at Wythes Real Estate on 0415 111 370.

Oktoberfest fun facts OKTOBERFEST is the world’s largest fair, celebrated in many countries around the world. It has been an important part of German culture now since 1810 and has grown in popularity worldwide. Australians have been enjoying this event since the 1960’s, embracing the party atmosphere and enjoying good food and drink. • The legal drinking age for beer and wine in Germany is 16 years old, and just 14 if you’re accompanied by an adult. • In November of 2008, Bavarian waitress Anita Schwartz broke the record for most beer steins carried at once. Schwartz balanced 19 full beer steins—5 in each hand, and 9 positioned on top of these—and walked 40 metres without spilling. To set this Guinness record, Schwartz carried a total of 45 kg in her arms alone.

www.cooroyrag.com.au

• Oktoberfest started as a wedding feast in 1810. • Oktoberfest beer has from 0.6 to 1.1% more alcohol and sugar than the average German beer. • Traditionally, visitors to Oktoberfest wear Bavarian hats (Tirolerhüte). The more tufts of goat hair on your hat, the wealthier you are considered to be. • In 200 years, Oktoberfest has only been cancelled 24 times due to war and cholera epidemics. • Festivities historically included horse racing, however this ceased in 1960. Club Cooroy RSL will be getting into the Oktoberfest spirit this year by offering delicious German taste treats in Anzac’s Restaurant. Why not join us? Guaranteed yummy food without the beer hall crowds!

dining & entertainment GEIST: The German Genius and Spirit in Song NOOSAVILLE Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel Saturday 25 October 5pm, Caloundra Regional Art Gallery Friday 31 October 6 pm, Cooran Hall Sunday 2 November 3pm. A rapturous evening of classical music from Germany to heal the spirit. Geist means spirit in German. Amanda Cole (mezzo-soprano) and Janet Brewer (piano & harpsichord) take you on a wondrous journey through German song, from the hauntingly beautiful chant of Hildegard of Bingen to the seductive allure of Kurt Weill. This exquisite program will feature some of our favourite composers–Bach, Handel and Schubert–as well as those less well-known such as Clara Schumann, Albert, Prince Consort (Queen Victoria’s husband) and Henry Handel Richardson– famed Australian author of The Getting of Wisdom. Andrew Paszkowski (viola) joins the duo for a beguiling masterwork by Brahms: a rare trio in two movements for piano, viola and contralto. Cole is known both locally and abroad for the lyrical beauty of her singing as well as her marvelous musicianship and innovative programming. Enjoy a special evening of classical music and be prepared for an unusual concert. At Caloundra there will be a cash bar. At Cooran, Clooney’s restaurant will extend their opening hours for concert patrons. See www.amandacolemezzo.com more information. Amanda Cole is a compelling and passionate performer specialising in art song, oratorio, chamber music, early music and the avant garde. As a soloist she has performed with some of the premier choirs, orchestras and ensembles in New Zealand. In Australia she has appeared with some of the country’s finest orchestras. Janet Brewer is well known to audiences in the Sunshine Coast, most commonly as soloist with Pacific Chamber Players,

dining & entertainment Harpist and High Tea

COOROY RAG

THE hauntingly magical sound of the harp will combine with the tinkle of fine china and the excited chatter of ladies enjoying high tea at Yabbaloumba Retreat near Kenilworth on Sunday, October 19. Harpist Dr Judy Flieter will perform at the pink-themed Chicks in the Sticks high tea where guests will have a wonderful afternoon while at the sametime raising money for research into breast cancer. Group spokeswoman Kelli Hoyes said the handful of volunteers who organise the afternoon had all been touched by breast cancer either directly or indirectly. “We know how vital it is that research funds are raised to help the Queensland Cancer Council in its endeavours to find a cure for breast cancer,” Kelli said. The high tea, which has established itself as a must attend event on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland calendar, has proven so popular that the number of guests has to be limited so it is vital you get in early to book your tickets. The very talented ladies of the Kenilworth Quilt and Craft group have made a “musthave” quilt to be raffled on the day and there is also a large, popular multi draw raffle. The huge charity auction is a real crowd pleaser thanks to the generousity of people and businesses who support the high tea which is in its fourth year.

FAMILY FUN DAY SUNDAY 19TH OCTOBER

There will also be prizes for the best dressed table, best hat and many more. Just about everyone goes home with a treat. The finishing touches are being added to the menu for the afternoon tea which will be served from 2pm. While the exact details are still being finalised you can be guaranteed the food will be yummy. On arrival, from 1pm there will be a free glass of pink bubbles for guests and non-alcoholic punch will be available. Tickets are $39 each and can be purchased now from Lolie Murtagh 54460 0222 or Kelli Hoyes 5446 0155 or 5446 0598

Come and try sailing

Father and daughter team, Scott and Riley Sinclair, get ready to race IF you want to get into a sport that the whole family can do together, think about sailing. It is never to late to learn. Whether you want to sail alone, with a partner or even with the whole family, there will be a boat to suit your needs. We are blessed in our beautiful region to have one of the great sailing venues and one of the best volunteer run sailing clubs in Australia. Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club is situated at Boreen Point, only 15 minutes from Noosa. Whilst being a family orientated club with sail training and two races run every Sunday, we also hold regattas and State and National titles during the season. Charlie Hacker, the club coach, is a local legend who has been teaching juniors and seniors to sail for well

over 30 years. On Friday and Saturday 26/27 th September, Charlie is running a two day Try Sailing clinic. During these two days, you will learn to rig a boat and be taken out with experienced sailors who will instruct, guide and give you a chance to have a go yourself. The cost of the two day Try Sailing clinic is $50 per person for nonclub members. However, if you wish to join the club with a 12 month membership the price is only $10 per person. Club membership also entitles you to ongoing free sail training every Sunday morning and use of the club boats. For enquiries, phone Charlie Hacker on Ph 0427548527 or see www.lcsc.org.au

Kin Kin Yarn KIN KIN’S inaugural story-telling festival, The Kin Kin Yarn kicks off at 9am on the 5th of October with four highly talented, experienced and thoroughly entertaining wordsmiths calling themselves a “pack of bards” In medieval times a bard was a professional poet, employed to compose eulogies for the lord of the manor. This was a paid ‘gig’, and if there weren’t sufficient funds on the table the bard would then compose an unflattering piece of satire pointing out their master’s shortcomings. Amongst many talents bards were also widely regarded as keepers of history, transmitting the stories of their people through song and poetry. The most famous bard was William Shakespeare who was known as the bard of Avon. Hosting Kin Kin Yarn’s ‘Pack of Bards’ is Ian Mackay, a Woodford Poet’s Breakfast icon…who also hosts poet’s breakfasts at many

regional festivals including Maleny Music Weekend, Kenilworth Art Festival and Christmas in Cooroy. Ian is a greenthumbed mulcher of words. Robin ‘Archie’ Archbold, founder of Nimbin’s ‘World Cup of Poetry’, is the only performer to have won both the Woodford Folk Festival Poetry Slam and the Woodford Folk Festival Storytelling Award. Archie is the master of unique. ‘Irish Joe’ Lynch is an

amazing story-teller who has won major competitions at the Woodford Folk Festival, The National Folk Festival and the Gympie Muster, and has also featured at clubs and other festivals around the country. Irish Joe has a wonderfully-sensitive mind. Harry ‘H’ Donnelly is an award-winning poet well known to ABC Coast FM listeners with his ‘Thoughts of H’ poems every Friday morning for close to 350 consecutive weeks.

He has often featured at The Gympie Muster, Tamworth and Woodford Folk Festivals. Harry majors in ‘one minute mayhem’. Brunch with the ‘Pack of bards’ at the Kin Kin Yarn is just part of what promises to be an entertaining day for the entire family with plenty of free entertainment for the kids and many stories to be told. The Kin Kin Yarn is being held on the Kin Kin oval from 9am to 4pm on Sunday the 6th of October.

Maple St Acupuncture welcomes Gigi Mirto to the clinic BORN in Naples, southern Italy, Gigi Mirto has lived and worked in a number of countries over the past 24 years, including Morocco, the UK, France and Thailand, immersing himself into, and being influenced by, the local cultures, customs and spiritualities. Aware of being a natural healer since a very young age, in July 1996 he came to Australia, as part of a long ‘global pilgrimage’, and began the study of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Qi Gong. The resulting ‘blend’ of a great range of relevant life experiences, his innate access to healing energy and information, and the intimate understanding of TCM and the complexities of human physiology has produced in him a powerful and effective practitioner with a truly holistic approach to health and Well- being. At a purely physical level Gigi works effectively with pains, aches and discomforts, both acute and chronic. In addition, the power of his techniques has been effective at resolving or managing deeper, systemic issues like insomnia, anxiety, lifestyle changes and emotional upsets. “I have also had the opportunity,

time and time again, to facilitate profound healing and resolution with patients who have suffered from one or several traumas, of differing severity, at some point in their lives.” Gigi considers himself to be primarily a practitioner and teacher of Qi Gong & Acupuncture. Qi Gong is an ancient Chinese esoteric and alchemical practice consisting of a series of subtle exercises. Literally translating into ‘Vital Energy (Qi) work (Gong)’, aims at unblocking, cultivating and increasing the flow of Qi and physiological fluids in the body’s pathways. Its benefits are widely acknowledged and, in Chinese hospitals, a medical version is often an integral part of the treatment protocol for most pathologies. Gigi also uses Traditional Chinese Medicinal Massage (known in China as ‘An Mo Tui Na’), as well as ‘Qi Nei Zang’ and ‘Jing Therapy’ manipulation and Energy re-balancing techniques, are the medical and external ‘hands-on’ applications of this discipline and his main area of service in life. To enquire or make a booking please contact Maple St Acupuncture & Natural Medicine on 5442 5526.

Resistance training for health bodies RESISTANCE (or weight) training is something that is often overlooked, especially by females. Most people think that to lose weight, they just need to do cardio exercise such as swimming, walking and running. Many females think that by lifting weights, they will look more bulky or masculine. This is simply not the case! While cardio exercise is also important to health, resistance training is the best strategy for changing your appearance and keeping your bone density and connective tissue healthy. Resistance exercises help boost your metabolic rate and increase your endurance during other physical activities. When combined with a good nutrition plan providing healthy quantities of protein, gains in muscle mass and tone burn calories at a faster rate and help to keep your blood glucose levels under control. More stable blood glucose levels not only improve your health but assist in burning any unwanted body fat. For females especially, resistance exercise is important for maintaining bone density, which is even more important after menopause. In addition to assisting bone density, resistance training is important for keeping our tendons strong and preventing debilitating degenerative tears. Determining the starting resistance for your new or improved resistance program is best assessed by a qualified Physiotherapist, Exercise Physiologist, or Personal Trainer. For those new to weight training, the initial weight may be used for the first month and more resistance slowly added as your program is progressed for your

health Exciting new CADCAM technology for Dentistry is here

COOROY RAG

AT Wattle Street Dental Dr Wei Shen is introducing the new Cerec OmniCam Chairside Solutions. Cerec enables biocompatible porcelain ceramic material to be produced easily while you wait. If you have visitid Wattle street dental before, you probably have already met the old Cerec 3D in the past. The new OmniCam is even better with the lately CADCAM technology. It can make inlays, onlays, crowns and bridges in one single visit.. Early next year, the software update can also enable cerec to design/make invisible braces, and help lower the cost down. Cerec Omnicam uses a state-of-theart digital 3D camera to create a virtual model of your tooth on the computer screen ( That’s right, no more disgusting gooey stuff in your mouth). The ceramic restoration is then designed using state-of-the-art CAD software which allows us to customize the shape and detail to exactly fit your specific clinical needs. The restoration is being milled on site which means you don’t need to wait for weeks while having a plastic tempory filling in your mouth. The strong ceramic material is biocompatible-enamel like material which is perfect to replace ugly metal fillings that are deteriorating in your mouth. It can also protect and preserve your natural tooth structure where the cracks have been developing. Metal fillings don’t stick to your teeth, and after years of deterioration, the bacterial can track down the side of the grooves and cause decay. What’s even worse is sometimes

crack can develop around old metal fillings to extend all the way to the nerve. Occasionally when cracks are untreated, they can lead to expensive root canal treatment or extraction. If you are sick of having teeth repaired every 2-3 years and can’t afford crowns, this might be a good solution for you as it is economical, it offers longevity and protection of further deterioration of your teeth. (A Cerec restoration can be delivered in one appointment. No more uncomfortable impression trays full of goop in your mouth. No more plastic temporaries in your mouth while you wait for laboratory work to be completed; a process which can take weeks and a series of dental appointments. Cerec means the restoration is completed in one visit. ) Because the new machine is so efficient, we are actually going to lower the price!!! We can give you a new quote at your next visit if would like to replace your amalgam filling or need a new crown. We also have happy gas available for extra-sensitive patients. Give us a call on 5447 7669 to see if you are a good candidate for cerec.

HeartCare extends services to Cooroy COOROY patients will have front-door access to cardiology services as HeartCare Sunshine Coast prepares to launch a local cardiology service in October, 2014. Interventional Cardiologist, Dr Jonathan Cherry, will visit Cooroy every month, meaning patients no longer have to travel to Nambour or Noosa for a cardiology consultation. The Cooroy clinic is HeartCare Sunshine Coast’s third visiting service in the Hinterland region and aligns with a broader plan to provide quality and accessible cardiology services throughout the Sunshine Coast. Dr Cherry said, “We’re continually looking to fill service gaps in areas where patients have historically had to travel long distances to access cardiology services. Cooroy already offers some specialist services and we’re pleased to add cardiology to this list”. Dr Jonathan Cherry and Dr Tau Boga are permanently based at Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital (SCUPH). Dr Boga

already regularly visits Gympie, while Dr Cherry launched a service in Maleny earlier this year. Since opening in April, 2014 the doctors and staff at HeartCare Sunshine Coast have made it a focus to provide comprehensive cardiology services with a local focus. HeartCare Sunshine Coast is a part of HeartCare Partners, which has been operating across Queensland for over 25 years. The practice boasts the widest network of cardiology clinics across the state with facilities in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Hervey Bay as well as a partner practice in Bundaberg. HeartCare Partners’ cardiologists also provide visiting services in other regional centres. “Being part of a larger network means we have strong links with specialists all over the state who support each other to provide the best treatments available,” Dr Boga said. “HeartCare Partners is part of GenesisCare and is able to use its national network to improve outcomes for patients”, he added.

Looking after your wellbeing

DR SHARON Chant enjoys working at Cooroy Wellbeing Centre and has been there for almost a year; joining Phil McManus, Natasha

Jones and Maxine Smith. She is an integrative medical practitioner; which means she uses conventional medical management for

treating illness, and combines this with a nutritional and environmental approach to discovering the cause of ill health. By getting to what is really causing a state of dis-ease; then there is then a better understanding of how to approach a treatment plan. She has undertaken additional training from the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine during her medical career, which has expanded her tools for searching for the underlying causes and therefore enables the necessary changes to be made to bring about a state of health and wellbeing. Dr Chant has completed some Advanced Nutrient Therapy training with Dr William Walsh, from the Walsh Research Institute in the USA. Dr Walsh trains doctors in using nutrient therapy to improve mental health; and therefore nutrition and mental health is an integral part of her practice. Clinic is open Monday; Tuesday; Thursday; Friday ; 8.30 – 5 pm. Phone 54477403.

health Help your kids to be happy and healthy

NOT long now until school holidays are over and the kids are back at school again. At school and childcare, kids are exposed to a host of bacteria and viruses and are often susceptible to infections. A sick child can quickly spread their germs around the family having a big impact on family life. The start of the school term is the perfect time to boost your

child’s immunity, so that they stay strong and healthy and don’t fall victim to frequent infections. Developing robust immunity is essential to every aspect of childhood development. In fact, healthy immunity in children sets the stage for good health well into adult life! Naturopath, Maria from Make A Difference Health & Fitness can help you keep your kids healthy this year. Healthy kids are happier

and behave better, need less time off school and cause less disruption to the smooth running of family life. Over 70% of our immune system lives in and around the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, having high levels of good bacteria in the digestive system is essential for building a strong immune system in growing children. The beneficial balance of ‘good bugs’ in the gut is easily upset by many

factors, including antibiotics, high sugar diets and stress. This can lead to an increased risk of colds and flus for your kids. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that you can give your kids as a supplement to aid in the development and maintenance of healthy digestive and immune function. Diet and lifestyle have an effect on your children’s immune system. To give them the best support ensure your child eats plenty of vegetables and fruit every day; eats protein-rich foods in each meal or snack; drinks plenty of water daily; has adequate sleep and rest; and has regular exercise. Reducing sugary foods and sweets, as these can suppress optimal immune function and avoiding or severely limit processed foods, additives and artificial flavours will also help your child stay as happy and healthy as possible. If you’d like more tips or help, give Maria a call on 5442 6179 or 0407 597 748 or visit www.madhf.com.au to find out more.

WELL known ceramist Robyn Gill will open her exhibition “PORCELAIN Black, White or Colour” at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery on 4 October. Robyn has travelled extensively to China for study, residency and exhibition and has won many awards for her fine works. Robyn states the following regarding this exhibiton: Colour and experience from nature rather than a reproduction of it, have inspired my Art and gives purpose to the emotional content of beauty and filtering light. Several Residencies in China starting in 2007 increased my passion with Porcelain and encouraged me to push it to its limit. The pieces in this exhibition have been inspired from previous works over the last 10 years, including Celadon, Black/White and most recently working with Coloured Porcelain. I love the process of Carving and how the Celadon glaze melts into the work and the rich colour and layered patterning of Coloured Porcelain. Every success leads me further down the same path and excites my passion to continue with this medium. The exhbition will be held in the Carriage and will last until Oct 29th. Mary River Festival THE Mary River Festival, held each year in Kandanga in early November has acquired a reputation of being one of the friendliest, most laid back festivals you’d find, with a great mix of top music, art, kid’s activities and much much more. This festival runs on a not for profit basis with an incredibly lean budget, through the generous involvement of CoolArts Gympie, the Save the Mary Group and the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee, as well as a number of individuals, and enjoys wonderful support from musicians and participants. As well as the sense of community

though, what really powers this festival is the exuberance unleashed five years back, after Peter Garrett gave the federal thumbs-down on the Traveston Crossing Dam proposal. It was that enormous relief and the grabbing in both hands of the ongoing environmental stewardship of the Mary River that runs through every part of this festival. This year’s festival, with a theme of “Weaving community” will be held on Saturday November 8 at Jack Spicer Oval in the heart of Kandanga. More information at www.maryriverfestival.org.au

Funding to help Kin Kin preserve Anzac memories A NEW Federal Government grant of $525 will help the Kin Kin community to commemorate the contributions of ex-service personnel from the area. This funding will be provided to the Kin Kin Community Group, to install a new memorial honour board, alongside the existing memorial plaque in the Butter Factory Park, recognizing the names of Kin Kin residents who fought in the First World War. This honour board will ensure that the contribution of the Kin Kin community to this significant period in our nation’s history is not forgotten. I wish to recognise in particular, the efforts of Mr Arthur Johnston, who researched and compiled the list of veterans from the Kin Kin community. After the outbreak of the First World

War, the Kin Kin community, like many other small towns across our nation, enlisted volunteers from diverse backgrounds and occupations. “Unfortunately many Australians, including some from Kin Kin, perished in war, especially in France and other parts of Europe. It is fitting that we make this effort to remember their sacrifice and contributions,” said Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss. “This project complements many other commemorative activities that are being planned in communities in Wide Bay to recognise the Centenary of Anzac.” The Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program is a key element of the Australian Government’s Anzac Centenary program.

pomona Friendly rivalry as Mary Valley towns welcome scarecrows RIVALRY is growing between towns in the Mary Valley as they vie to display the most scarecrows in the annual festival which opened on September 15. A flurry of registrations in Kandanga has the tiny village leading the race in the Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival, with Imbil not far behind. The Kandanga Postie - Athol - has become the stuff of local legend and is featured on his Postie bike out the front of the Kandanga Post Office. A poem submitted with his entry describes how he delivers mail through rain, hail and shine, but you can rarely catch him to have a chat, unless you find him at his “other” office - the local pub. The festival stretches from Dagun to Conondale, and this year there are cash prizes for ‘crows judged as Mary Valley champions, which will be presented at the Mary River Festival on November 8. Pack a picnic or choose a local cafe or hotel for a country lunch, and come “scarecrow spotting” in the Mary Valley until October 17. Organisers will upload a Google map with the locations of scarecrows onto the website www.scarecrows.org.au and this will help you plan your trip. Originally built to ward off birds from the farm crops, scarecrows today are usually relegated to the domestic vegetable patch. The Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival is auspiced by the Mary Valley Artslink organisation, which aims to promote the growth of the arts as a viable industry within the Mary Valley by providing a framework for artists to build projects. It is affiliated with Artslink Queensland. Inquiries to Mrs Watson on 5484 3010, email info@scarecrows.org.au or visit www.scarecrows.org.au

Junior Dolphins premiership splash! FIVE Noosa Junior teams contested all but one of the six SCRU Junior Grand Finals last Saturday, with the Under 12s, 14s and 18s teams winning their respective premierships. U12 Noosa 24 def Brothers 12: It was an impressive season for the committed U12s winning the Premiership and John Connelly Shield, Maroochy Sun Surf 7’s and an undefeated performance at the Surfers Paradise City vs Surf Rugby Carnival. U13 Noosa 15 - SCGS 20: Grammar got out to a lead of 20 to 5 in the second half and had the Noosa boys on the ropes. Noosa could have wilted, but the whole team showed a lot of heart and fought back. The Sonny Payne award for the Grand Final was awarded to Isaac Stearn and Jack Usai for their unwa-

vering commitment. U14 Noosa 29 def Maroochydore 3: Congratulations to Coaches Jason Larsen and Andres Moccero on a great season. U16 Noosa 10 - SCGS 13: A penalty goal in the dying minutes of the game was all that stood between the teams at full time, with the Dolphins unlucky not to come away with the draw. U18 Noosa Dolphins 19 def Caloundra Lighthouses 13: Try scorers Andrew Ramsden 2, Tommy Christie 1. Conversions - Brad Morgan 1, Chris Morgan 1. IMPACT Boxing has been busy as usual of late. The Impact team have been working hard in their preparation to compete in Cairns on the 18th of October. The Impact boxers that will be flying the Impact Boxing flag for the Cairns show are Maddy Phillips, Taylah Robertson & Cian Jones. All boxers are enjoying a hard preparation which has been fuelled by Coach Mark Evans’s return from the Australian Institue of Sport. Mark was invited to the Institute of sport by Australia’s two Olympic coaches, Kevin Smith and Don Abnett to help with the training of a Philippines Elite team. “It was a great honour to be invited down for the training camp at the AIS. I got to observe & learn some different training techniques from one of the worlds most Elite amateur boxing teams and their coaching staff. The Philippine team are ranked number eight in the world so to get a chance to train with them was an awesome experience. As an added bonus Australia’s own Commonwealth gold medallist Shelley Watts is back in training in preparation for the Women’s World Games to be held in Korea in November. It’s not every day that you get to hold pads and train with a history making gold medallist. Shelley is living proof that hard work pays off and dreams do come true. “Whilst I was there I also did some extra coaching training with Kevin and Don to build on the coaching methods & the development programme that I will be teaching in Qld as the States development Coach. I am very excited about my newly appointed role with Boxing Australia and I cannot wait to share what I have learnt in the gym with our Impact Boxers. It is also nice to know that our little

Glasgow Commonwealth gold medallist Shelley Watts with Mark Evans gym in Cooroy is now being recognised at the highest level in our sport. Exciting times a head for myself and our athletes,” Mark Evans said. Anyone, male or female that is interested in boxing either competitive or just for fitness can contact Mark on 0403 264 048.. ”Impact Boxing would also like to remind everyone that we are holding our annual boxing tournament on Nov 1st at “The Stadium” Noosa District High School. So far we have boxers from Vic, NSW & the N.T. that have nominated. This show is a great opportunity for our kids to show case their skills in front of their home town. Hope to see you all there.”

Eumundi Dragons thank their ardent supporters

Geoff Edwards from Cooroy Community Bank branch joins Scott Thompson and players at the Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Club presentation day ANOTHER successful season has come to an end for Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Club. President, Scott Thompson took time to thank the club faithful and sponsors at their presentation day last weekend. “Like most clubs, our season began with our sign on day in February and our wonderful committee has really put in the hard yards for us in

2014. I’m really proud of what our club has achieved this season, but watching the improvement of so many of our players has been the greatest reward of all,” Scott said. “The enthusiasm of our coaches, managers and volunteers has provided so much benefit to our players and we’re very grateful for all they have done,” he added. On presentation day,

Scott welcomed Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank’s Geoff Edwards and thanked him for his support. Applause soon broke out after Geoff announced the bank would again support the club again in 2015, ensuring junior rugby will continue to be played in our Noosa Hinterland community. “We’ve so appreciated the support of The

Cooroy Community Bank this season and it’s great to know they’ll be on board with us again in 2015. Geoff and his team are so great to work with and their sponsorship allows us

to offer support for all lovers of the game they play in heaven,” Scott said. Those sentiments were echoed by Geoff. “We’re delighted to be on board again, giving kids an opportunity to stay fit, learn more about this great game and have lots of fun at the same time. Let’s hope even more locals businesses sign on and get involved in supporting the Dragons in 2015,” Geoff said. So as thoughts already turn to 2015, Scott called on any boys and girls of all age groups who would be interested in joining the club next year to get in touch with the club. They can do this through the Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Club website w w w. e u m u n d i dragons.rugbynet.com or by calling Scott on 0448 191 218.
