THE Cooroy Lower Mill Board (CLMB) is planning to change its name to Cooroy Future Group (CFG) to reflect its growing role in managing events and projects in the vibrant hinterland town of Cooroy. On September 22nd, Noosa Council announced that the CLMB has been chosen to run and grow the success of the Butter Factory Arts Centre for an initial trial period starting on January 1, 2016. CLMB President Tex Pipke, said the decision heralds

a new, brighter future for the Butter Factory as an integral arts and community centre in Cooroy. With this challenging project CLMB has concluded that the name should be more reflective of involvement with the Cooroy Community. Mayor Noel Playford had suggested the probable value of such a change at a Council Committee meeting in March. Continued on Page 4

Hop, Hop, Hop, Merry Christmas! The Facts - No Spin!

INTRODUCED last year, the Cooroy Fish and Chips Santa Sack Races were so popular that it has become a permanent addition to the Christmas in Cooroy program. Last year, even Councillor Sandy Bolton had a crack and was happily beaten by the entire field of happy hoppers! This event is reminiscent of community picnics of days gone past and it is just as popular today with the kids! It’s a great activity for children of all ages and every child that participates receives a small gift but most of all it is lots of fun. If your child wants to participate make sure you’re at the starting line opposite the Library at 4pm at Christmas in Cooroy on Saturday 5 December. The Santa Sack Race is a part of Christmas in Cooroy which is a fantastic free community event with free rides and entertainment for the entire family. Hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Cooroy this event is a showcase of Christmas spirit for the region. And everything is FREE including rides thanks to sponsorship of the Cooroy Rag - so you can have a great family day out without breaking the budget! For more information on Christmas in Cooroy or the Santa Sack Race visit www.christmasincooroy.com.au.

In September we sold 18 properties in and around Cooroy where we achieved an average sale price of $899,333. The only thing stopping us from selling more properties is having more properties to sell. If you’re considering selling or alternatively you’re currently on the market and not enjoying success, contact Anita or Maggie for an obligation free meeting to explain how we can get your property sold for a good price in the shortest possible time.

Cooroy Christmas Tree extra special this year EACH year, Ricon Contractors decorate our beautiful tree on the roundabout at Emerald & Maple Streets which we believe is the best tree on the Sunshine Coast! The Cooroy community is extremely proud of the beautiful Christmas Tree and turn out in droves for the official turning on of the lights ceremony. This year, our Christmas Tree is extra special as there will be eight opportunities to sponsor an 80cm star on the Christmas Tree. These stars can be used to memorialise a loved one; or can be dedicated to those who are overseas and can’t be with us during the festive season; or even to give someone recognition for special efforts. A story will be written about the person each star is being dedicated to which will be placed near the tree on the wall of the Cooroy RSL for the month of December. “Christmas in Cooroy is such a wonderful event that is focussed on family, community and all the spirit of the festive season. Ricon’s Sponsor a Star idea is such a lovely way to include those who can’t be with us,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Danielle Taylor. “We lost my Nana a couple of weeks ago, so I immediately wanted to sponsor a star in her name, Audrey Cooper. She was 94 years old and still living on her own until recently and while she had never made it up to Christmas in Cooroy she followed the media stories on the event and was very proud of my involvement as event manager. Now this Christ-

mas she will be a part of our town’s special event too.” Audrey Cooper nee Hungerford was born in Woombye in April 1921 and had a lot of wonderful stories of her country life there as a child with her siblings. She had many loves but cherished her family most of all. She often commented that as long as she was surrounded by her loved ones, she had everything. She raised her two girls, Raylee and Robyn on her own which would have been a formidable task at the time. She always had an incredibly positive attitude and her advice to others who were feeling unhappy in any way was to try to keep your cup at least half full. Her own cup was mostly overflowing. She had plenty of joy to spread around leaving most people happier after being in her presence. She loved her puzzles and was a master of Suduko and together with her sister Claudia would finish the Woman’s Day crossword nearly every week! Audrey loved writing letters and poetry and has written an extensive life story which is in the process of being published. Audrey would be delighted to be memorialised on the Cooroy Christmas tree. Cooroy’s beautiful Christmas Tree is turned on in an official ceremony on Friday 4th December and as a further show of community spirit, people are urged to bring along a non-perishable item which will be donated to create gift baskets for those in need this festive season. Mr Pipke said that for more than a decade the group has been known as the Cooroy Lower Mill Board, incorporating as a not for profit company approximately 7 years ago. This enabled CLMB to qualify for grant monies to further the refurbishment of the Mill Site, (refurbishing the Boiler and Kilns, The Log Maze, powering the site and tree planting). During this time many people have be-

come familiar with the name without knowing exactly what the mission is. The Mission is: To develop and sustain facilities on the Cooroy Lower Mill Site for present and future generations of the community with balanced consideration to history, culture, education, arts and economics. He said the essence of the mission statement applies not only to work on the Mill Site, but also to enhancing the overall future of Cooroy, and is emi-

nently suited to the work ahead for the Butter Factory Arts Centre. The Cooroy Future Group will continue the hard work of the Fusion Festival Committee where every May over 10,000 people enjoy a wonderful free experience thanks to the generous support of the Cooroy business community and the volunteer Cooroy Fusion Committee. Mr Pipke said that working for the Cooroy Community’s future has led to choosing the name

Cooroy Future Group Inc. From January 1 st 2016 CLMB will operate under the new name. The mission will not change. Mr Pipke said: “So looking to our future, we think our new name will reflect the ongoing work of the Board very well. It is timely to now recognise the past members of the CLMB and I personally express my gratitude to those who have been part of our efforts over the years and welcome those who will yet bring their

energy to our goals. We also acknowledge the ongoing support given by the Friends of Mill Place (FOMP) and the Cooroy Library staff.” He said the decision in relation to managing the Butter Factory Arts Centre has been made after lengthy consultation and thanked the Council for its co-operation and belief in CLMB’s capacity to undertake this important role. Mr Pipke paid tribute to the Noosa Shire Council

COOROY RAG I thought I had reached a venerable old age, But old Father Time kept turning the page. Maybe I can still have a bit of a fling, The autumn of old age is just as nice as spring. But one thing that intrigues me is the change in education, And the way they educated my early generation. Teachers taught us, gurus and know-alls left the teachers quite alone, They didn’t confuse them, interference was happily unknown. We liked our teachers, they made, and we kept, the rules, And discipline was pretty tight, throughout those early schools. The cane was used occasionally of course, but we boys never cried, A stiff upper lip was a matter of youthful masculine pride. I recall one teacher’s method of boyhood punishment, Was to make us sit among the girls, actually an encouragement. One day I was duly sentenced, so among the girls I sat, Anabel, the girl who sat in front of me, had her hair in a lovely plait, Sadly I could not resist temptation, and that plait of Anabel, Was dipped into that innocent but convenient inkwell. The teacher was not too severe on me, a half an hour detention, But Anabel, who possessed the plait, gave me some attention. But perhaps the teachers have to change, although I cannot reason why, They taught us pretty well, as we can testify, But I see in the national press today, There is another major teacher survey on the way.

switch and will be asked which service you require – police, fire or ambulance,” he said. “If you require the fire service, the Telstra switch operator will connect you to a Fire Communications Officer, who will ask you a series of questions to help identify the nature of the emergency and where you are. “It is very important that you don’t hang up until asked to by the operator.” Questions you will be asked include: What is the location of the incident? What is the nature of the emergency? Is anyone trapped, injured, endangered or unaccounted for? What is your phone number? What is burning? Are any persons or livestock being threatened by the fire? Is it close to any structures? If so, how close to the structure is the fire? Is anyone in attendance at the fire? What size is the fire? What is the best access to the fire? “By knowing the answer to as many of these questions as possible, you will help us to help you during a fire emergency.” For more information, visit www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au. or contact Jackie Kirk, Volunteer Community Educator, Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade, 0427476067.

THIS bushfire season, the Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) is asking south-east Queenslanders to be well informed when reporting a fire emergency to authorities. RFSQ South Eastern Regional Manager Corey Bock said it was vital residents equipped themselves with as much information as possible about a bushfire incident when calling Triple Zero (000) to report a fire emergency. “Ensure you know where the fire is located, including a street number, name, nearest cross street and locality,” Mr Bock said. “In rural areas it is important to know your rural road number (located on a fluorescent picket) and correct road name which will assist emergency services to know how far your property is from the nearest major intersection along that road. “We rely on residents to report fire emergencies and by knowing this information, you will help firefighters protect life and property during an emergency.” Mr Bock said making a call to emergency services was very simple. “When you first dial Triple Zero (000), you’ll get through to an emergency Telstra

A huge amount of time and effort go into producing the beautiful work displayed. THIS column highlights an issue that some in our hinterland community are already sadly experienced with - and it’s happening more often. Identity theft occurs when someone, without your knowledge, acquires your personal information and uses it to commit fraud in order to steal money or obtain other benefits. The consequences can be both financially and emotionally devastating. Criminals may obtain your personal information through a variety of methods. It can be as simple as using ID from a stolen wallet or purse, intercepting mail, stealing sensitive information from your rubbish, gathering details stored on computers or shared on social networking sites, or even through public record. Once stolen, there are a number of ways identity thieves can use your information. They may use credit card details to make purchases, or as supporting documents to obtain even more information in order to establish new

bank accounts and take out loans in your name, running up huge debts. There are some simple tips we can all take to protect our identity. • Don’t do internet banking on a public computer. Ensure that all passwords are hard to guess, and that your home computer has adequate protection. • Lock your letterbox and shred sensitive mail before throwing it out. • Always be suspicious if anyone asks you to divulge your personal information, and remember that the scammers may use an elaborate and convincing story. A legitimate financial institution will never send you an email asking you to follow a link, so don’t

be tricked. And, if you are contacted by someone claiming to be from a bank, ask for their contact details and call them back – however always use the telephone book or a bank statement to obtain the phone number, don’t rely on the number provided by them, or sent in an email. There are a number of websites which can help you protect against identity theft, or deal with it once it has occurred. Try www.scamwatch. gov.au, http:// www.bankers. asn.au or www.mycredit file.com.au For further information about identity theft, please call into the branch or call me on 5447 7131. You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

JOHN was born in Goomeri 1927 and passed away Saturday 3 rd October 2015. John spent his younger years working on farms, in and around Murgon, Windera, Cloyna, Watchbox, and in the cheese factory at Tansey. John’s first love was motor bikes. Some he owned were a Two-stroke Coventry Eagle, a BSA and an AJS. When John meet his future wife Sylvia at Watchbox, his motor bike was sold for a Model T Ford utility. It must have been a bit rough as mum would later joke, I wouldn’t get in it till he put a roof on it. In 1947 Sylvia moved with her family to Cooroy where John & Sylvia married in the family home in Kauri Street in 1948. They started their married life share farming with Frank & Irene Kenzler at Mary’ Creek. Then they took on a farm of their own in the same area. Due to both coming down with tuberculosis, (John spending many months, and Sylvia 18 months in hospital) they lost their house and farm. John never gave up. He moved to Cooroy and worked as a carpenter for a local builder, Jim Bryant. This lasted for seventeen happy years where they built many a house and other buildings in Cooroy and the local area, one being the Lutheran Church in Diamond St. In those years it was common to relocate homes on the back of trucks. He was happy to point out houses in the area that they moved then renovated. The Cooroy Kindergarten is one example. Due to having seven children he had to work seven days a week most of the year. On weekends he either did private carpentry, or worked the local bean farms, ploughing and planting the hills by horse and plough. He did the hills as they were too steep for tractors in those days. Sometimes, after a hard days work, he would walk from home to his mates dairy farm to give them a hand with the milking and have an afternoon chat. They bought their house at 29 Tewantin Rd where, over the years as the family grew, many changes were made to the house. When the beer strike was on one Christmas, dad’s home brew became very popular. I can remember the line up of his mates, new and old, down the side of the house to get a few bottles of Christmas cheer. They came in with a bag of sugar and left with an armful of tallies. John gave up carpentry to live on, and work and manage a dairy farm at Black Mountain. The farm had been owned by Frank, Les and Cecil Kenzler. The property started just past the Cooroy tip on Black Mountain Rd, and took in most of the area to Black Mountain Range Road and across to the Bruce highway. There were other smaller farms in this area but the biggest was the Kenzler farm. His management came to an end when the new owner’s ill health forced him to sell. John and Sylvia moved back into their

house at Tewantin Road. Later he moved to land that his son Robert bought at Black Mountain, where they had a house built. At this time he started work at the lower saw mill in Cooroy. First as a tractor driver moving the timber into the planing shed, then later becoming a machinist. He was very proud of the hand rails, T&G, weather boards and other top class timber products he turned out. Later they moved to Kauri St Cooroy, next to the Old Bichel family home where they’d married so many years before. Here they lived until Sylvia passed away in 2013. John, due to ill health, moved into Kabara until he passed away Saturday 3 rd October 2015. John loved his indoor bowls, later taking up lawn bowls. He was a past president and life member of the Cooroy Bowls club. He won more championships than we can remember. He always had time to teach others and never baulked at playing with the newbee’s. The fun was in the playing he’d say, not in the winning. To those who knew John he was a quiet gentle man. He never had a bad word to say of anyone. I’m very proud to say I never heard anyone have a bad word spoken of him! John was the proud father of Keith (d), Robert, Mervyn (d), Eric, Lenore, Gary and Mark. He will be sadly missed by family and friends. John always said he lived in the best years, seeing the old and the new. He liked the old ways best where they always had time to play cards, sit together and talk and laugh. Life was hard but family life was full of joy. When Christmas was a whole street affair, fire works on Guy fawks night and so many other wonderful times. If you only knew how hard a life he’d had your heart could only swell with pride and love for the man he was. Good bye dad we miss you so much. Gary Kenzler & Family

Successful protest march

THE Global March for elephants, rhinos and lions held in Eumundi on October 3, was a huge success. A Harley Davidson escorted the march of over 80 participants through the Eumundi township with onlookers lining the street in support. The protest march, organised by Leanne Baxter, Marie-Louise and Chris Sarjeant, is to draw attention and try to pre-

vent canned lion hunting in South Africa. Canned hunting is the term used for an industry which breeds lions to be hunted. Australia bans any body parts from elephants and rhinos from being imported into the country but protesters want this extended to lions. Shop manager: Kile Beaumont explains the Restricted Master Key System, as ‘a highly restricted system and a very important security installation for business premises. We install the Restricted Master Key System and there is strict control to guarantee that the keys cannot be copied without proof of identification and authorization. The system is specifically designed to ensure the highest levels of security using a unique multi-level depth of security (1-9 levels). The key control capability allows for user accountability and an exact record and audit of the key trail. The system tracks the number of keys assigned and identifies any unaccounted for keys. SATURDAY, 10th October, the Cooroy Horse and Pony Club celebrated their 50th anniversary. Past and present members and friends celebrated in style, from 3pm until late, with afternoon tea, a two course meal a band and drinks. During the course of the afternoon a demonstration of dressage, jumping and novelties by current young members of the club bought back fond memories to many. Our life time member and local legend, Joan Boyce, cut the cake together with Irene Caddell who was a founding member of the club. It was a wonderfully warm gathering with lots of memories on display, bringing back all those shared years. A special thanks to all those who made it a success.

Tim Robinson, Principal of Advanced Physio Cooroy, demonstrates some of the supplies donated to Rongdal Preschool in Vanuatu. THE Robinson family (Tim, Jacqui, Courtney and Lachlan) of Advanced Physio in Cooroy spent a week in Vanuatu in September. The visit to Vanuatu by the Robinsons was more than a holiday. They had arranged to take with them 60 kilograms of school supplies to assist local recovery from Cyclone Pam. The school supplies had been donated by the Cooroy community, and collected by Advanced Physio, Cooroy Doctors Surgery and the Belvedere Newsagency. Virgin Airlines provided free transport for the student supplies. The Robinsons visited one of the most damaged Vanuatu schools and were met by local headmaster Max of Rongdal Preschool. He guided them on a tour of the almost abandoned school site, completely devastated by the Cyclone. A single post remained where once an entire library had stood.

Max said ‘Education is important to Vanuatu as a developing nation. Our kids need education to succeed and through them we will make progress’. Max welcomed the donation from Cooroy and said that it would make a difference to the recovery of the local schools. Jacqui Robinson said ‘It is important that people in Australia know that Vanuatu still smiles. We can support them by being tourists, as the holiday resorts are all undamaged’. Cyclone Pam - The Facts In March 2015, one of the worst cyclones on record, category 5 tropical cyclone Pam, struck the island nation of Vanuatu. With winds of up to 320 kilometres per hour, it demolished homes, schools and entire villages. Eleven people were killed and over 75,000 left in dire need of emergency shelter as they struggled with the destruction of 96% of food crops.

Brainy talk DR Michael Nagel, Associate Professor in the School of Education at the University of the Sunshine Coast presents a fascinating insight into how our brains develop and work at Cooroy Library on 13 November at 2pm. Nominated as Australian Lecturer of the Year each year since 2010, Dr Nagel, a regular guest on ‘TV New Zealand Breakfast’, ‘Sunrise’, ‘A Current Affair’ and ‘The Project’, is also a member of the prestigious International Neuropsychological Society. He is the Queensland Director of the Australian Council on Children and the Media, sits on a number of education boards and committees and is a feature writer for the ‘Child’ series of magazines which offers parenting advice to more than one million Australian readers. This talk will have interest for people of all ages as he discusses the most important things to do to foster healthy development in young minds and maintain such health as one ages. What might technology be doing to the human brain? How does stress impact on brain? This presentation shares the latest science research while debunking a number of myths related to the brain and how it functions. The presentation also examines important links between nature and nurture and unpacks the science of neuroplasticity and the factors that can hinder and enhance the development of the mind through the lifespan. Dr Nagel teaches and researches in the areas of cognition, human development, behaviour and learning at USC. He is the author of ten books on child development and learning with a particular focus on the paediatric brain, and used by teachers and parents in over twenty countries. His most prominent books to date include ‘BoysStir-Us: Working WITH the Hidden Nature of Boys’, ‘In the Beginning: The Brain, Early Development and Learning’, ‘Nurturing A Healthy Mind: Doing What Matters Most for Your Child’s Developing Brain, ‘It’s a Girl Thing’ and ‘In The Middle: The Adolescent Brain, Behaviour and Learning’. Dr Nagel has also delivered over 300 workshops and seminars for parents and teachers nationally and internationally When he is not busy professionally, he spends his time learning the important lessons of life from his own children, Madeline and Harrison.

New reception area for Kabara

AS part of NoosaCare’s refurbishment programme, we have relocated the Kabara aged care facility’s reception/ main entry area. Our new reception area opened on 29th September, 2015. The new entrance into Kabara will be located around the corner from the current entry to Cooroy Mountain Road. The relocation will improve security to the site via one entry enabling easier access when construction of our new building is completed. Construction of a new 32 room building is due to commence in November 2015 and will be completed mid 2016. The design has incorporated elements

to include natural light to all residents’ living and communal spaces. This enhances the experience and stimulation of the external and internal environments. The ambience of the interior will have a contemporary modern look, while still feeling like home. New staff car parking will be included on site to alleviate the congestion on street parking and improve access for neighbours and visitors to the site. CEO Megan D’Elton said: “Staff safety is of the utmost importance, especially at night. The on site parking will increase staff security with CCTV being installed in the car park and the new 32 bed building.”

ing additions in the form of accessories, you will soon be looking and feeling fabulous. A main point is to KEEP IT SIMPLE. We often over-think and complicate matters, when all we really need to do is to look at our clothes with fresh eyes and pare it back, making full use of our basics. To begin, think about all those winter items that will no longer be needed for the next 6 months or so. If possible, move these out of your wardrobe and pack them neatly away (with moth protectors to keep in good condition). If you can’t physically move them out of your closet, place them at the least-used end of your rack or hanging rail. That way, you won’t have to wade through them every time you are in need of a current outfit. So now we have our basic spring/summer collection of clothing on clear display. How are these looking? Are they in good shape and ready to wear? This is the time to cast a critical eye over these garments and see what needs attention or what is no longer suitable. It is definitely worth trying each item of clothing on, to see if they are going to make the grade.

When you are happy with your remaining collection, try adding a few accessories to give your wardrobe an injection of colour and style. Exciting trends are emerging on the catwalk for spring, giving us the opportunity to invest in accessories with some lively pops of colour, including aqua, orange, lemon and the ever-popular lime green. All this can be done without spending a whole lot of money - in the form of scarves, a statement necklace or two (layer them), fabulous earrings, and stacked bangles. These will all elevate your outfit to the next level, leaving you feeling together and polished. More exciting hints and tips on Personal Styling will form part of a Workshop Event being organized by Inside/ Outside Feeling Great at the Cooroy Library on Thursday 26th November, 10.00 am 1.15 pm. There will also be an uplifting workshop on discovering inner happiness, as well as a delicious morning tea. Women of all ages are welcome. For bookings phone 0439708142 or 0431105879. ON Saturday November 7th the Pomona & District Community House will host a Family Fun Day to celebrate twenty years of service to the community. In November 1995 a committee was formed to

find out if the Pomona community and surrounding districts would like a Community Centre to be housed in the old Station Master’s residence in Pomona. The support was overwhelming and now, twenty years later,

Art Market in the Paddock POMONA Railway Station Gallery is holding its Summer Art Market in the Paddock adjoining the Gallery, 10 Station Street, Pomona on Saturday 28 November 2015 from 9am to 1pm. Music and entertainment will be provided by local bush band FlashJack, and homemade goodies and refreshments will be available for purchase. The market provides the opportunity to own quality art and craft at affordable prices, and perhaps purchase early Christmas presents direct from the artist. There will be approximately 30-40 stalls exhibiting paintings, ceramics, woodwork, handcrafts and more. The aim of the market is to promote local artists, artisans and crafts persons and to give the public an opportunity to meet with the creative community. Nothing will be priced over $100 and all proceeds go directly to the artist. A contemporary abstract and traditional painting exhibition titled Twixt and Between by local artist, Helen Lawson, will be on display in the Railway Carriage. Artist stall registration forms are available at www.pomonartgallery.com or from the Gallery at 10 Station Street Pomona. More information can be obtained by calling the Gallery 5485 2950

the Pomona & District Community House (PCH) is known throughout the Noosa shire and the Sunshine Coast as being a leader among community centres. Joy Cross, recently re-elected as president of

PCH, said that the organisations new vision statement, “Community Spirit at its Best” sums up the role of the Community House. “While we celebrate our 20th anniversary in November, we remain excited about the future of PCH, always endeavouring to improve our programs while looking out for, and establishing, new programs and events to serve the community better,” she said. The Community House began with information, referral and basic office services, gradually developing and organising events for the whole community, always with an eye to promote the health and well-being and social connectedness of the community. Activities at the

House now include: Centrelink Access point; Tax help; Legal Aid; a weekly writers group; scrabble; pilates; astronomy group, Pomona Pixel People photography group and Brain HQ a ‘brain training’ program available free of charge. Regular events include a monthly Community Connect morning tea (an information sharing opportunity for anyone in the community) and regular cooking classes. The Community House celebrates annual events such as Youth Week, Seniors Week, Volunteers Week, International Women’s Day and collaborates with several other groups and organisations on other events throughout the year.

Bras n’ Bikes Charity Ride for Bloomhill LOCAL Sunshine Coast charity Bloomhill Cancer Care will once again be the beneficiary of the annual Bra’s n’ Bikes Charity Ride being held on Sunday 25 October. The ride will be the largest congregation of bikes in Queensland this year and will travel from Aussie World on a scenic route that ends in Kin Kin at the Country Life Hotel for lunch. At the lunch venue, there will be an auction held with some fantastic items on offer. Registration for the ride commences at Aussie World from 07:30am. The cost is a $15 donation per bike. In addition there will be patches and neck socks on sale and the Bra Bar will be selling bras of all shapes, sizes and designs. Bloomhill Cancer Care General Manager, Mervat Quirke said that Bloomhill is honoured and appreciative to continue the ongoing partnership with

Girl Torque. “All the funds Bloomhill receives from the Bras n’ Bikes ride will allow us to continue to deliver vital support services to our clients, their families and carers” Mervat said. “Everyone is invited to get involved and decorate their bikes with a pink theme in celebration of October and support the Power of Pink” Mervat said. Bloomhill Cancer Care is a Sunshine Coast based charity that supports people of all ages on the Sunshine Coast to live well with cancer. This support extends to families and carers. COOROY RAG

Heidi was a popular entry using round hay bales. Here’s a great idea for the Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival 2015! Registrations open this week for the festival, with scarecrows on display from October 24 to November 14. The organisers are using Facebook to help the festival attract more visitors. Coordinator Heinke Butt said this year, when visitors come “scarecrow spotting” as the sport is called, she wants them to bring their smart phones and snap a selfie with a scarecrow. If they hashtag #mvscarecrows, organisers will post it on their Facebook page Mary Valley Scare-

crow Festival. “Let’s see who gets the most likes!” she said. “The person with the most selfies with different scarecrows can win $50 as well.” As she launched the festival this week, Ms Butt urged locals from Conondale through to Dagun to get creative and make straw creatures to decorate as many farm gates and streets as they can. The festival is designed to encourage people to plan a day out in Mary Valley Country, and see if they can find the variety of serious and not-soserious straw creations along the way. Once all scarecrows are registered, a Google map can be downloaded to let you know where all the entries are. “Each town chooses their finalists, who are then judged against each town in the Mary Valley, with prizes for the winners who will be announced at the Mary River Festival on November 14,” Ms Butt said. Three categories offer cash prizes in the Mary Valley overall judging: Child (5-15 years) $50, traditional (T-shape skeleton and straw body) $100, and artistic (anything that is an original idea) $100. From small square bales of hay to the oversized round bales once stacked three high to create the popular Heidi in 2004, locals are encouraged to find old clothes, timber strips for frames and any other items which they can recycle into a scarecrow. “Scarecrows are about creating a farmer look-a-like in the crops to keep the birds away. “They also mark the arrival of spring when we can look forward to a burst of nature after winter. “The Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival is about that and more – we have an element of creative licence and often humour is obvious in some of the scarecrow entries.” The community art organisation Mary Valley Artslink auspices the scarecrow festival. Inquiries to Heinke Butt on 0419 024291 or email info@scarecrows.org.au You can find the festival on Facebook or visit www.scarecrows.org.au

OCTOBER is month when the women from Cooroy Golf Club raise funds for Australian Breast Cancer Research. The golf event, Tee Off for Breast Cancer Research, is programmed for 22 October 2015. On this day, the women dress themselves and their carts in pink to symbolise the difficulties so many of their family and friends have endured in their dealings with breast cancer. Australian Breast Cancer Research supports vital medical research into the prevention, detection, management and treatment of breast cancer. Monies raised for this research is having a wonderful impact on the survival rates of those diagnosed with cancer. Fundraising began in earnest on September 28 with a Full Moon Cruise

on the Noosa River. What a way to spend “happy hour cruising down the Noosa River, sun setting to the west and a full moon rising to the east! This was all possible because of the very generous offer from Kym and Gary Logan of Noosa River and Canal Cruises who donated their time, their boat and their crew for this very special evening. These good people also provide prizes for our Tee Off for Breast Cancer Research golf event. The friendship and support of the Pomona Pacers, an enthusiastic Walk for Heart group from Pomona was appreciated. Those wishing to be involved with this group who walk every weekday in Pomona should contact Karen on 0408 652 821.

The Many Benefits of Tai Chi Do you have sore and achy joints that prevent you from doing most types of exercise? Do you feel unsafe at the gym and worry about your balance? Maybe you should consider Tai Chi. Tai Chi is a safe, low impact form of exercise that utilises major muscle groups to improve your strength and endurance. Studies have found that Tai Chi also enhances balance, agility, coordination and flexibility due to a series of repetitive, slow, weight-bearing movements combined with deep

breathing techniques. Tai Chi is safe on hips and knees due to its low impact movements throughout the class. If you are interested in trying Tai Chi, you can discuss your requirements with physiotherapist and Tai Chi instructor Courtney Vella from Hinteractive Physio. Tai Chi classes are held on a Wednesday evening at 5.30pm and a Friday morning at 10am. For more information, please contact Hinteractive Physio on 5442 5556.

My Journey with Leukaemia by Lis Blake HOW often do we sit down and ask our bodies - ‘how do you feel?’ With our busy life-styles we often ignore the one thing that is definitely the most important possession we own. I know I used to! Some 30 years ago when I first started taking an interest into ‘why’ certain things occurred in my life, I was blessed to have some amazing teachers ‘fall into my lap!’ One of them was Dr. John Harrison who wrote ‘Love Your Disease: It’s

Keeping You Healthy’, and I was even more blessed to have the opportunity to work with him. At that time I had managed ‘to develop’· Leukemia and I was looking for answers as to why this had happened. I can remember him saying ‘that “it’’ will go away when you don’t need it anymore!’ When he said that it made no sense to me at all! Now I can happily say that with awareness and yes much introspection - I have no symptoms and this I accomplished with

no help from the medical profession. I must add here that in my work with clients, I always suggest that they seek medical advice. And how I managed to turn around the cancer I had will not necessarily apply to others because we are all different.’ This is an extract from an article written for the October issue of Holistic Bliss magazine which is available now at: http://www.keys toselfmastery.com/myjourney-with-leukaemia/ When I turned

Leukaemia around some 10 years ago, I had no idea I would be starting workshops on the Sunshine Coast to help people with the energy changes that we’re now experiencing. During the first workshop at Cooroy Library in June this year some of the things we explored were: why many people are feeling they ‘don’t belong’ here on the planet; why they are super-sensitive to just about everything; why they keep seeing numbers such as 11:11;

Loyal employee to retire from Noosa Care LOYAL employee Pamela Mackay, has worked with NoosaCare’s Carramar and Kabara aged care facilities for 30 years. Pamela commenced with Carramar in 1985 as a relief administration employee until 1988. She then became a personal carer, trained as an activities coordinator and was publicity officer for the ‘Friends of Carramar’. Pamela transferred to Kabara in Cooroy as Diversional Therapist in 1992 and remained in this capacity up until her retirement. Pamela was on the Committee for the Ageing, working to bring respite into this area, was publicity officer for the Scouting Movement running fund raisers and was on the Tewantin School PC as Secretary. Pamela has two sons and plans to enjoy her retirement by taking on some new hobbies and gardening and having a general clean up. CEO Megan D’Elton said: “We appreciate Pamela’s loyalty throughout her 30 years at NoosaCare. Her devotion to the organization is to be admired. She will be missed.”

www.cooroyrag.com.au

why they are waking up at 2 a.m. and feeling ‘that time is speeding up’. The fourth workshop called ‘Make Your Body Your Friend!’ is about to be held. There are many ways to do this and for this seminar we will be exploring topics such as: • Is our DNA carbonbased or has it switched over to crystalline? • And if it has changed what does this mean? • Can we communicate with our body - can we talk to our cells? • And if we can - how do they respond? • Could Metaphysics help us with handling Spiritual Awakening Symptoms? • Are you ‘sensitive’ or an ‘empath?’ These subjects plus many more will be discussed. I will also be explaining my ‘Journey with Leukaemia’ in detail. A ‘question & answer’ segment follows the afternoon tea which is included in the cost of the workshop. When you bring a friend a discounted priced is available. Each workshop ends with a guided meditation set to high

vibrational music. With the changes that have occurred in the last few years, we are finding that the two levels of vibrational energy are unable to live together i.e. something has to give and we have a choice to make! When we are aware of what is happening - we can understand that the actual energies that are uncomfortable are helping us to let go of what isn’t

working for us. So in fact this is an amazing opportunity from which to learn and move forward. Find out more by joining me at the Ivory Palms Conference Centre, 73 Hilton Terrace Noosaville on Saturday, 31st October, 2015 at 1.30 p.m. Bookings are essential. THE Noosa District State High School Interact Club raised $300 through the sale of sausages for the Rotary Life Straws project. Life Straws provide people in developing nations with a useful, ultra-light, straw filter where they can drink contaminated water safely. A Life Straw filters a maximum of 1000 litres of water, enough for one person for one year. Year 11 Student Leader Karree Lindenmayer presented the Cooroy Rotary Club with a cheque for $300 at today’s full school parade. This money will be used to assist people to access safe drinking water in countries that are impoverished, war-torn, or effected by natural disasters. LAST month David Frith and Murray Brown took part in Amy’s Gran Fondo which is a 120km cycling event along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. Amy’s Gran Fondo is the only event on the Australian cycling calendar that provides the safe and unique experience of riding on a fully closed road. About 6000 riders took part in this year’s event, staged by the Amy Gillett Foundation, a charity aiming to reduce the incidence of death and injury to bike riders on the road. Amy Gillett was an Australian cyclist who represented her country at track cycling and was killed in 2005 by a motorist while out training in Germany with other members of the Australian women’s cycling squad.

David and Murray travelled down with a couple of other local cycling buddies and all qualified in their respective age groups for the 2016 UCI Amateur Road World Championships (UWCT Final) in Perth. David Frith took up cycling about 3 years ago when some health problems prevented him from running. Previously he used to run up and down Mount Cooroora in Pomona for fun but now he’s a selfconfessed cycling nut. “This year I’ve been coached by Nick Formosa who has helped me get fitter and recover quicker. He’s helped me improve my cadence which has helped me ride consistently, rather than needing to take days off training,” said David. “A low carb, high fat diet recommended to me by my GP has also worked really well for my training! “We’re very lucky to live in such a great place for cycling. I train just about every day and my favourite places are west of Cooroy (Skyring Creek Road and Black Mountain) and riding up to Montville. “I’m really excited about wearing the Aussie green and gold! And even my long suffering wife is excited about going to Perth!”

NOOSA District State High School Year 12 student Caitlin Wark competed at the Noosa International Rugby 7’s in the open women’s Sunshine Coast Stingrays team last weekend. Caitlin had just returned to the sport after rupturing her ACL at Queensland All Schools last year and undergoing a knee reconstruction. Caitlin put in a strong performance, helping her team to the semi-finals, but the team were unlucky and went down to Country King Browns in a fast, high-impact contest. Caitlin will compete in Toowoomba next weekend with her open women’s Stingray’s team, and will represent Sienna College at the upcoming All Schools Rugby 7’s on the Gold Coast.

COOROY RAG Great performance from young guns

IMPACT Boxing Academy has held its annual “Young Guns” Boxing Tournament last week end with great success. This annual event continues to grow, attracting competitors from all over Australia. “These kids train hard all year round & this event gives them a chance to showcase their skills in front of their home crowd. They compete all over the country & some of them the world so to compete in front of family and friends in their home town means so much to them. Win, lose or draw they always give 100%,” Coach Mark Evans said. The crowd were entertained with 30 bouts, most of which were of an extremely high skill level. All the Impact fighters performed well with some stand out performances from Ben Cameron-Hands, Byron Mckeown & Brock Shelley to name a few. All money raised from this event will go towards funding future trips away to compete for the Impact crew. “I would like to thank everyone that came to support this tournament. Without your support we could not bring boxing to Cooroy. These shows are about the kids and I know how much these shows mean to them. Thank you again and I look forward to doing it all again next year,” Coach Mark Evans said.

sport UNLIMITED GOLF Bendigo’s support keeps after 3pm only $15 MEMBERSHIPS Pomona Bowls Club rolling IF you have a love for lawn bowls or maybe a really great meal, or both, then make sure you visit Pomona Bowls Club. The greens are about as well regarded as the club’s new chef, Karsten Arnott. His new menus for lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday are attracting patrons from far and wide, with the Sunday roast and the all-you-can-eat buffet a standout. Pomona Bowls Club has around 80 bowling members and 200 social members, and has been in operation since 1948. It’s a club that is well known for its friendly atmosphere and welcomes both young and old to a sport that grows in popularity each year. One thing the club prides itself on is its connection with the Pomona community. So, it only seems natural that the club’s long term sponsor is Bendigo Bank - at the Cooroy Community Bank branch and now the Pomona Agency. After all, it was at a community meeting last year when the idea of bringing the agency into town began. Since opening in April, more and more locals have learned the value of good, old fashioned service from Geoff Edwards and his team and in this case, how anyone’s banking choice can give a community a real say in its own future. Club secretary and Men’s President, Bob Andrews met with Geoff at the club last week and thanked

him for the partnership between the two organisations. “We’re a club very rich in tradition and passionate about our bowls. We greatly appreciate the support of Bendigo Bank and we’re excited to be sponsored by a bank that is continually giving back to its community. “This isn’t just a financial donation to us, it’s a long term business relationship with Bendigo Bank. We’re delighted to have our own banking services in Pomona and getting sound advice in terms of our financial management,” Bob said. Those sentiments were echoed by Geoff. “Our sponsorship is the latest step in a great relationship. We’re getting more involved with events and sponsorships in Pomona as the agency strengthens. The Community Banking model is simple - the more locals bank with us, the more we give back. Our motto is ‘bank with us and everyone benefits’. We’re already a major sponsor of Pomona King of the Mountain Festival, Noosa Country Show, Pomona Demons and look forward to doing a lot more with Pomona State School and, of course Pomona Bowls Club, “ Geoff said. If you would like any further information about playing or dining at Pomona Bowls Club, call 5485 1202. If you’d like to speak with Geoff Edwards about the Pomona Agency of Bendigo Bank, you can reach him on 0418 158 089.
