Make sure you get on board! HAVE wheels, will travel. There’s a brightly signed bus driving around Cooroy and the Noosa hinterland and locals couldn’t be happier with the service it’s providing. In recent months, the Cooroy RSL Club decided to thank its sponsors by placing the logos of the many local businesses who help keep the Sub-Branch Community Bus on the road. Funds from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Cooroy RSL Sub-Branch and the Cooroy RSL Club made the purchase of the bus possible. Manager of Cooroy RSL, Tina Bernard said the bus is a great partnership as the financial assistance provided by L-R: Denis Thompson (volunteer courtesy bus driver), Geoff Edwards (Cooroy Community Bank branch manager), the local sponsors enaTony Kershaw (volunteer courtesy bus driver), Elaine Williams (Cooroy RSL Club), Tina Bernard (Cooroy RSL Club bles the club to run and manager) and Leanne White (Cooroy RSL Club) maintain the bus, which will be used to raise essential funds for the club’s ongoing operations. sponsors and manager of the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo “The bus has become a really popular part of what we do in our commu- Bank, Geoff Edwards said the relationship with the bank and Cooroy RSL is nity. Why do the media persist in publishing this past affair, About two politicians and their historical personal, bitter warfare. All this futile dredging through the Rudd and Gillard drama, (At least we are getting a rest from the usual target, Mr Palmer). Who said what, who did what, it’s being done to death, There’s no point in arguing now, might as well save your breath. Politics lives on arguments, of plotting, and vicious back stabbing, Of rumour-mongering, undermining, and blatant attention grabbing. The modern politician’s aim, and absorbing chief direction, Is to save his seat, enjoy the perks, and win the next election. Any news person delights to catch unawares, a minister who is normally elusive, All the better if there’s some story, which he can label “Scandal’ or “Exclusive’. Politicians write about themselves, in glossy covered books, Making out they were heroes, even if perhaps they were really sooks. It fills their time, I guess, when they finally get around to retiring, Although the resultant book, is not usually gripping or inspiring, People have lost interest in the Rudd-Gillard affair, that’s clear, I suggest that nobody cares, and everyone’s had it right up to here. This year the prizes for the Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race are $750 each for first male and first female, $250 for second and $150 for third. The beauty of this race is that you don’t even have to place to be a winner as there are also five random draws of $100! Increasing the prize pool to $2,400 is sure to see a huge field of entrants in the Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race on Saturday 7 December. But the prize pool isn’t the only enticement that gets people involved, as the event also raises funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, providing everyone with plenty of incentive to get their

running shoes on! “This is the sixth year that we have had the mad-cap excitement of the Great Santa Race as a part of the Christmas in Cooroy celebrations. We’ve had around 50 Santas in the last couple of years but it would be great if we could double those numbers and get 100 Santas streaking their way up Maple Street. There are thousands of people in the crowd cheering them on

so it is all quite exciting. The more Santas that run, the more funds are raised for the Leukaemia Foundation,” said Danielle Taylor, Event Manager. The Great Santa Race will start at Apex Park in Cooroy at 4.30pm on Saturday 6 December. Entry to the Great Santa Race is only $10 and all entrants receive a free Santa suit to race in. Proceeds of the race are donated to Leukaemia Foundation. Par-

ticipants must be 18 years and over and entries can be obtained online at www.christmas incooroy. com.au under the competitions tab. Ensure you enter early to secure a spot at the starting line. The Great Santa Race is a component of Christmas in Cooroy which is a fantastic free community event with free rides and entertainment for the entire family. Hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of

Commerce and the Rotary Club of Cooroy this event is a showcase of Christmas spirit for the region. The race will precede the popular Bendigo Bank Street Parade which then leads into other festivities such as music and fireworks in Apex Park. Christmas in Cooroy could not be run as a free event without the fantastic support from all its volunteers and funding partners.

Jarrad receives Citizenship Award

REALITY Bites is back and this year, for the first time, in Eumundi. With more room to move, the festival has added two new venues and an extra day to its program. The workshop series will begin on Thursday October 23 in the beautiful stateof-the-art Cooroy Library, and our schools program is based at the Noosa District High School in Cooroy. Literary events kick off on Friday October 24 at the Green Room, upstairs at the old Imperial Hotel in Eumundi where it’s all about LOVE, a major theme of the festival. First up, award-winning journalist, David Leser, turns his unflinching gaze on himself in relation with his father. He tells a beautiful story of the making of a man through the great loves of his life - his mother, his children, the women he has loved and especially his father. Food lovers can hear Zane Hacker tell his tale of high adventure as chef on an Antarctic base. Then only a recent graduate of Noosa District High, Zane pitched his idea for his new book at our very first ever Pitching Clinic six years ago, and now he’s back with one hell of a mouthwatering story to tell. Then the language of love goes under the microscope, as panellists Mandy Sayer, Anna Campbell, Tony Birch and David Leser interrogate the literary use and abuse of the “L” word. In the evening, the Green Room in Eumundi will also host the launch of Australian Love Stories by Ashley Hay, and elegies of resistance by Geoffrey Datson (ed). Patrons can stay on after the day’s sessions, celebrate the launch of these two books, then kick back and relax over a drink or two and enjoy the poet’s Speakeasy, featuring readings by festival guest authors. This event is free. Reality Bites is spreading the love with a specially discounted Friday Pass for those with an afternoon to spend immersed in words of love. “We want newcomers to fall in love with the festival on Friday,” says Event manager Annette Hughes. “The Friday Pass is ideal for people who have never been to a writers’ festival before. They can try out the experience for not a lot of outlay, and if they like it, upgrade to a festival pass on the day.” The festival continues till 26 October in Eumundi. Check website for program and huge savings on Festival Passes. Tickets at the door from $20/$15. Jarrad said he felt privileged to meet the Queensland governor and described His Excellency The Honourable Paul de Jersey AC as “a wonderful man with a great sense of humour.” Jarrad is waiting to hear back from the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) regarding his medical clearance and hopes to relocate to Canberra following his graduation from Noosa High at the end of this term to join ADFA. “I attended the ADFA Open Day in Canberra a few weeks ago. It was fun,” Jarrad said. Noosa District State High School wishes Jarrad all the best in his continued illustrious contribution to the country as a dedicated, kind and charitable Australian citizen.

COOROY RAG BOUQUETS & B R I C K B AT S BOUQUET To Noosa Shire Council for the work on the Cooroy Memorial Triangle, it looks fabulous. Congratulations to all of the staff who made this possible! Your work is appreciated by many especially the RSL & their families. Our Community & Council is lucky to have such dedicated workers BRICKBAT to the old lady with a walking stick and blue car near the Cooroy markets. I was almost in the park this week in Cooroy when you decided to walk behind my reversing car. It was only the reversing camera alarm and me being alert to what was happening behind me that you were you not hit. I am sure it would have been much safer and less stressful for us both had you waited a few seconds to enter your car parked next door. I am pleased you were able to drive off in your car and not an Ambulance. BOUQUETS to the staff at the Cooroy RSL for their help in making our Mother’s 90th Birthday morning tea such a success. Everything was done that we requested plus some. It was a great day Thanks to you all ~ The Wilkin Family BRICKBATS to the person who opened their car door rather vigorously, without any consideration to the car next door (my car), outside IGA on Wednesday (September 17). It was possibly a 4x4 from the height of the dent and missing paint. Of course, no note was left. It would have been obvious as the dent was large. I thought our little township was more caring than this. BRICKBATS to drivers who refuse to slow down when driving past ridden horses. Being a country area I would have thought alot more people would have the respect to do so. Unfortunately not. BRICKBAT to the gentleman that keeps on ringing the council every week, and complaining about menial things against all the small business owners in Pomona. You have obviously never had a small business of your own and therefore don’t appreciate how hard it is for all of us especially in such a small town. BRICKBATS to the bakeries whose cakes and buns always taste stale. I don’t know if it’s because they’ve been frozen or if they’re just days old. I used to buy these items from bakeries to ensure their freshness but I may as well buy the high preservative ones from the supermarket. They taste fresher and are cheaper.

Owning your own little piece of Australia Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy HELPING people on the road to owning their own home is one of the most enjoyable parts of a bank manager’s job. Like the pursuit of any big dream, there’s some work involved and some processes to follow in setting up your home loan. You will need to have saved a certain amount of your own funds as a deposit - which is usually a minimum of 5% of the purchase price if you are using mortgage insurance. There are also other costs to allow for, such as the loan set up costs, stamp duty for the purchase as well as your own solicitors charges and search fees. Having the deposit is the first big step in the process. You also need to fit the criteria of the lender’s policy for such things as job stability and capacity to repay the loan. These things will all be taken in to account during the assessment

period. The assessment process may vary from bank to bank and depend upon what type of loan you’re applying for. For example at Bendigo Bank your local manager will have their own lending authority to approve most credit cards, personal and residential loans. It’s always a good idea to get to know the staff at your local bank and the manager in particular. With all the electronic means of banking in this day and age, ATM’s, internet, phone banking, direct credit and debits, not all customers regularly visit their branch and getting to know each other can be difficult. A bank will need to use letters, emails or phone calls to stay in touch with customers they usually don’t see. Nothing is more reassuring during any application process than feeling confident

in the representative guiding you through it. So, if you have that dream of owning your own little piece of this great country we all call home, please call into the Cooroy Community Bank branch or contact me on 5447 7131 or geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

Country Noosa forum off to a great start AS outlined in the last edition of the “Rag”, the Country Noosa Forum kicked off with an initial field day on September 27th hosted by Dick and Kim Barnes at Bellbird Homestead, Ridgewood. Nearly 60 people attended with a wide range of primary production interests and this great response supports the need for the Forum that was covered in the last article. Dick started with a welcome and an overview of his beef cattle enterprise, including a presentation of property development, a case study on rotational grazing, and the current challenges to a beef producer. The meeting was well supported by Noosa Councillors and Sandy Bolton gave an address titled Encouraging Rural Enterprise. This touched on issues such as how Council can help with business initiatives; aspects of the new Noosa Plan and the formation of a d a t a b a s e o f stakeholders; the draft regional plan including adjacent areas to the Noosa Shire; and talked about the importance of rural industries to the economic welfare of the shire as a foil to the ups and downs of the tourism industry. She also pointed out that people needed to be educated to shop for local produce and products. Local Landcare boss Phil Moran gave a very interesting talk on the management of local weed species, while former DPI extension officer Graeme Elphinstone gave an entertaining and informative talk on tackling the weed of all weeds, Giant Rats Tail. Both speakers fielded a range of questions which proved our poll findings that

www.cooroyrag.com.au

Field Day crowd weed management was a hot topic in the Noosa Shire. Noosa Council officer Ken English delivered a talk on feral animals, including the genetic make-up of wild dogs and the ways and means of their eradication. He described the baiting and trapping methods, and the new research using tracking technology and genetic testing to discover the behaviour and territorial activities. After a tasty lunch, Black Mountain farmers Anna and Mike Henbury gave a fascinating presentation on their new chicken farming enterprise, which involves a series of chicken coups moved along the paddocks. Currently producing pastured chicken meat, later in the year laying hens will be introduced to supply the local egg market. It turns out this is to be just the start of their plan to integrate chicken and beef meat production in a whole-of-farm enterprise which could well be a forerunner for other suitable properties in the Noosa Shire and elsewhere. There was much enthusiasm for both the

technical and social content of the day. There were many suggestions as to how the website should be developed and it was agreed that a pro-

gramme of quarterly meetings should be proposed based on ideas discussed at the meeting. Dick Barnes and Rod Ritchie are busy working on the way ahead. If you

have not already done so, visit countrynoosa.com to see how it is doing and register to receive the newsletter on coming events.

Council to replace wheelie bins free NOOSA Council has announced that it will replace damaged wheelie bins free of charge because Council wants to ensure that everyone’s bin is vermin-proof, hygienic and safe to use. These two animals are on the brink of extinction. 123 cities around the world and all major cities in Australia participated in the protest. Organisers, Chris and Marie-Louise Sarjeant from Eumundi, said Elephants die every 15 mins, rhinos die between every 9 to 11 hours. In the next two decades if this continues they will be gone. There is no reverse button on Extinction. Every species that is lost is stolen from our children and their children. There is little more that can be said, other than demand the buying stops so the horrendously cruel killing can too.

Wings towards a Butterfly Hobby Farm N O T- F O R - P R O F I T disability support organisation Sunshine Butterflies is seeking the vital support of the community to help create their dream of a Hobby Farm at their property recently purchased at Cooroibah. Sunshine Butterflies is a local disability charity that offers support, activities & programs and respite for people of all ages with disabilities and their families. To make their dream a reality, Sunshine Butterflies needed to raise a $100,000 deposit to pur-

chase the property which went to auction in September. They are now one step closer to reaching the Sunshine Butterflies vision which has been in place for a long time,” said Leanne. “The benefits of this will be huge, not only for Sunshine Butterflies but the community in general whether you have a disability or not,” said Leanne. The property is called “Our Backyard” and will be available for their members to enjoy days at their Hobby Farm and learn about h o r t i c u l t u r e ,

disabilities and everyone in fact Leanne said. Spending time with animals is excellent for building confidence, self esteem and reducing stress and anxiety. Sunshine Butterflies currently provides programs such as music, woodwork, art, cooking, sewing , swimming clubs, early interventions therapy, support groups, siblings club and many other services such as their Family Care Program which will all be transferred and co-ordinated from the new location in

2015. They are still looking for Foundation Donations which are fully tax deductible and will either be classed as platinum, gold, silver or bronze depending on the amount, which will be acknowledged through large pavers placed within the hobby farm or logo and insignia placed on a sponsor board on the house. Anyone who wishes to donate can visit the Sunshine Butterflies website www.sunshine butterflies.com.au or phone 5470 2830 for more information.

Vietnam trip enriches lives of students

Providing Total Business Care Principal: Seb Vecchio

AN educational and humanitarian trip to Vietnam over the September school holidays enriched the lives of a group from Noosa District State High School. 20 students, a parent, the school chaplain, school nurse and Noosa District State High School Year 10 Co-ordinator spent 13 days in Vietnam learning firsthand about the country’s diverse culture, geography, fascinating history, food, religion and its friendly, generous, intrepid people. The group also conducted humanitarian work at a Catholic orphanage for blind children in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Highlights of the trip

included a cruise and seafood lunch in the UNESCO World Heritage Halong Bay, exploring the limestone caves and being awestruck by the spectacular seascape of the limestone pillars jutting majestically from the jade coloured water. Students also enjoyed staying in the luxurious Hoi An Resort with its poolside dining and indulgent (and very affordable) spa treatments. The Hoi An Resort was also conveniently located near market stalls and outlets where students were able to have beautiful one-of-akind formal dresses made to order. Students partook in

some celebrity spotting in Hoi An (Scarlett Johansson) and enjoyed the relaxed change of pace of the French inspired town. The main focus of the trip was to undertake two days of humanitarian work at an orphanage for blind, abandoned children in Ho Chi Minh City, which the Noosa High students found to be most rewarding, inspiring and life-changing. Students at Noosa High raised money through sausage sizzles and joint projects supported by the school’s Interact Club and Student Council, with the money used to purchase toys suitable for blind children at Nambour Toy World, and food, which

was purchased in Vietnam. Noosa High students and staff worked with the orphanage’s staff and students to produce a nutritious lunch of fresh fruit, baguettes, spring rolls, rice and curry, which was shared and enjoyed in a social setting. The orphanage was overwhelmed with Noosa District State High School’s generosity and it was very moving to see the orphans hug, hold on to their new toys and smile and cry as they expressed their gratitude and love for the students of Noosa High. The Noosa High students were impressed with the talents the orphans were able to showcase through their musical, story-telling, beading, artwork, soccer and computer skills and their positive outlook on life and generous spirit. The school trip to Vietnam has augmented the lives of the Noosa High group, with many now planning their next overseas adventure and some reconsidering their personal values and ca-

reer pathways, with a few students looking into the prospects of further missionary and humanitarian projects and teaching English as a second language (ESL). The Vietnam trip has proven to be a wonderful educational experience, with many students learning so much about Vietnam as a country and, in so doing, acquired and learned so much about themselves.

DO you need to take action now? If you are over 55 and potentially eligible for a Centrelink benefit, you need to read this. You may need to take action. New rules are coming on 1 January 2015 that could reduce your Centrelink benefits. These rules change the way that superannuation-based pensions will affect entitlements to Centrelink benefits that are subject to an income test (such as the age pension) The new rules will only affect those who start receiving their Centrelink benefits after 1 January 2015, or who start or change their superannuation-based pensions after that date. If you may be eligible for both a Centrelink benefit and a superannuation-based pension next year, you may need to take action this year to maximise your Centrelink benefits in the future. It’s important that to consider your own situation before you decide what to do. Your financial adviser can give you a personalised recommendation to help you consider whether to: start a new superannuation-based pension now; or make changes to an existing superannuation-based pension before the deadline; or apply for Centrelink entitlements that you are not receiving. These things take time, so it’s important you act now. Will the changes reduce the amount you receive? From 1 January 2015 new Centrelink rules could affect your government age pension entitlements for the rest of your

life. It pays to be aware that if you receive a government age pension and set up or make changes to an accountbased pension after 1 January 2015, you may be worse off. Use the time before the end of this year to work out whether reviewing or setting-up an accountbased pension before 1 January 2015 will help you—and put your plan in place. What will the changes mean for you? All account-based pensions (ABPs)—including allocated pensions—set-up after 1 January 2015 will be assessed the same way as other financial assets. So if you’re receiving a government age pension it may be reduced as a result. This also applies to those ABPs set up before this date that are not eligible to preserve the old rules. If you’re eligible, it’s not too late to set up an ABP before 1 January 2015 under the current rules. In fact, doing so may preserve your government age pension entitlements. Are you eligible? If you have money in super but you haven’t set up an ABP yet, you may be able to preserve or maybe even increase your government pension entitlements if you are: Aged over 65 at 31 December 2014; Receiving a government age pension by 1 January 2015. What if you make changes to your existing ABP? Any changes you make to your ABP after 1 January 2015 could make your ABP assessable under the new rules—for example, if

you: Change your ABP provider; Add or remove a reversionary beneficiary (a person you’ve nominated to receive your pension income when you die); Combine multiple ABPs or consolidate super into your ABP; Cease receipt of a government payment Start a death benefit pension for anyone other than a reversionary beneficiary. It’s important to speak with your financial adviser about whether setting up or reviewing your ABP now will help you preserve any age pension entitlements you may have. Now might also be a good time to review your estate plan. ExampleLet’s take a look at Jane and Michael’s situation. If Jane and Michael, both aged 65, retired with a combined super fund balance of $273,000 and minimal other assets, they would currently be entitled to a full Government age pension under the assets test, and if they start an ABP prior to 1 January 2015, they

would also be entitled to the full Government age pension under the income test (depending on level of income drawings). If they transferred the $273,000 to an ABP after 1 January 2015, then deemed income of $8,361 pa would be counted towards their income test, which would reduce their combined age pension by about $19 per fortnight ($494 pa). At current levels of 2% and 3.5%, deeming rates are comparatively low. In the event that the deeming rate increased to, say, 6% pa, their age pension would be reduced by a total of $173 per fortnight ($4,498 pa).If they transferred the $273,000 to an ABP before 1 January 2015, they could draw an annual income of up to $20,011 before their age pension would reduce under the income test (assuming Jane is an automatic reversionary on Michael’s ABP).What you need to knowThe example above is illustrative only and is not an estimate of the investment returns you will re-

ceive or fees and costs you will incur. This example is based on the following assumptions (a) Rates used are valid up to 30 June 2015 (includes maximum pension supplement and clean energy supplement). (b) No other income or assets have been factored into the calculation (eg lifestyle assets and/or any other investments). (c) Deeming rates are 2% up to $79,600 for a couple, and 3.5% for amounts above this figure. *Chad Monroe & Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004 are Authorised Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. Updated Age Pension Guide now available FEDERAL Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, today released an updated edition of his Age Pension Guide. Mr Truss said the Guide was extremely popular amongst pensioners because it explains the terms and conditions that apply to the Age Pension as simply as possible. “The Age Pension rules can be confusing and complicated for many people. This guide is designed in an easy to use format to help pensioners understand their entitlements,” Mr Truss said. “It also reassures pensioners that the Age Pension will continue to increase twice per year, as it has done in the past when payment rates are updated on the 20th March and 20th of September. “Income and as-

set tests, and deeming and other provisions are also adjusted from time to time, which can affect the amount of assistance that pensioners are entitled to receive, so it is important that people have access to the latest information about the support that is available and where it is available from. “The Guide also provides useful information about a range of other issues relating to pensions, including the Pension Bonus and Work Bonus Schemes, the Carer Payment and Allowance, as well as health and discount cards that are available to pensioners,” Mr Truss said. “The Guide is available free of charge and can be ordered by telephoning 1300 301 968, or downloaded from my website www.warrentruss.com.”

Eumundi School of Arts hall turning 102

Eumundi School of Arts Hall in 1914

The Hall as it stands today

TO celebrate this grand age Eumundi will be putting on what has become an annual fundraiser concert, on Friday 24 October, this year part of the Reality Bites Literary Festival. Enjoy an evening of music and community featuring 4x ARIA winning and 7x platinum selling songstress Katie Noonan alongside wonderful cellist Louise King and exciting up and coming Ebony Hamacek. Doors will open at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. These talented musical artists and those assisting in the running of this event give their valuable time each year to raise funds towards the maintenance of the hall and to buy musical instruments for the Eumundi State School music department. Most halls in the region are Council owned or run but the Eumundi School of Arts from the beginning has been trusted to the community for its maintenance and use. The land it’s on was gazetted to the community in 1905 by the State Government and a hall was built in 1908 but was soon found to be too small. A new hall was proposed in 1911 and was built using mostly donated timber felled in the area and milled at no charge in Etheridge’s sawmill which was where Caplick Park now is. The hall opened to quite a fanfare and a two day celebration on 15 November 1912 and was considered one of the finest buildings in the area. Over the years there have been changes to the hall including two additions. Once two storey and quite ornate the ravages

of time and a number of termite attacks saw it lowered to the one story building we have today. The centre of Eumundi life for many years with debutante balls, wedding receptions, war fundraising efforts, silent movies and talkies, and now to monthly showings by the Eumundi World Cinema group the hall has had a multitude of uses over the years including badminton, roller skating and boxing. Yoga and indoor bowls have been going for many years and still continue. Activities today also include a theatre group, kung fu and children’s creative dance with community meetings and one off uses in between. Currently the hall is in trust to the Eumundi and District Historical Association who oversees rentals and each year finds the funds to run it, insure it and do the repairs and maintenance of this grand old lady. This year Dinner, Dessert and a Drink (tea or coffee) are included in your concert ticket which can be purchased from Discover Eumundi, Berkelouw Books and online at www.redchair.com.au where you can also find more information on this event. Please support this fabulous event and the Eumundi School of Arts Hall so we can all continue to enjoy it for many more years to come.

Read widely, read wildly READERS are snobs. I hate to say it, but it’s true. We sniff at those who read something we consider inferior – be it romance when we love gritty crime, or true life when we prefer fantasy, or chick lit when we only read classic literature. Why would anyone read such a trashy/boring/ ridiculous/etc book?

Look, try this book instead. It’s much better. It’ll really change the way you read. So, dutifully, we read the books our peers, our teachers, the literary critics and the media tell us are good, and that we must enjoy (and so avoid the sniffy gaze of the bookshop owner...). But here’s

the thing – just like there’s no bad ice cream flavour, just different tastes, there are no intrinsically bad books either. My boring vanilla is your peppermint chocolate chip. Or something, I may have lost track of my metaphor. There’s one of those anonymous internet quotes that floats around, getting attributed incorrectly to various famous people: “If you think reading is boring, you’re doing it wrong.” Well, sort of. I’d suggest you’re reading the wrong books, rather than actually reading wrong, which may be the sentiment behind the quote. And that I do agree with – there’s a book out there for everyone. Unfortunately, because we have to flounder through a lot of well-intentioned suggestions first, some of us never find that book that will spark our love of reading and give us the chance to live those thousand lives Mr Martin

recommends, as well as our own. So the only solution is to read widely, and wildly. Try everything. Read Shakespeare, Jackie Collins, Carl Sagan and J K Rowling. Read true life stories and fantasy epics. If the title grabs you, if the cover intrigues you, try it, even if you’ve never heard of it. If it loosely intersects with your interests in life, or doesn’t, try it. If someone says it’s good, or if they say it’s terrible, try it. Because somewhere out there is the book that will transport you, that will make you reluctant to finish it, reluctant to set it down to eat or sleep or work. And then you’ll have the reading bug, which, sorry to say, has no cure whatsoever. But it’s fantastic. Wild reading welcome at “of Cabbages & Kings”, 3/14 Maple Lane, Cooroy. Give me a call on 5447 7090, or stop by the website www.ofcabbagesandkings. com.au See you soon!

COOROY RAG Brushstrokes and Barbed Wire – Lasting Impressions Gallery, Kenilworth Well known Sunshine Coast artist Pam Walpole will open an exhibition of her most recent works at 11.00 am on Sunday, October 26 th at Lasting Impressions Gallery in Kenilworth. With great intuition, Pam captures two of the major aspects that characterise the Australian landscape. Far from the busyness of the cities she discovers swirling rivers and cool lily ponds that speak of peace and sunshine. But often, endless miles or just a stonesthrow away, the remnants of a homestead, a drove’s camp, a forgotten railway siding evoke the harsh life of generations past. On her recent trip up the Oodnadatta Track, Pam gathered images as well as detritus

Tinbeerwah Art Group

strewn across the outback and recreated her impressions on canvas in the studio. The resulting paintings and collages form the starkly contrasting exhibition titled ‘Brushstrokes and Barbed Wire’. ‘Pam is a highly regarded painter and sculptor whose work can be found in many collections including in the new Sunshine Coast Private Hospital says Kaye Cathro, director of Lasting Impressions Gallery. ‘Her current show, however, is the most lively of Pam’s work yet’. The exhibition will be open from October 26th to November 9th and paintings may be viewed on the gallery’s website www.lastingimpressionsgallery.net.

THE Tinbeerwah Art Group’s Art Show at Tinbeerwah Hall earlier this month was its biggest and most successful ever. At the official opening last Friday night the bubbles flowed, the paintings sold and so did the art books generously donated by Lindsay Blair husband of the late Gwen Blair (founder of Tinbeerwah Art Group) and her friend Rene Conway. Celebrations continued with a rousing chorus of happy birthday and a cake for T.A.G.’S oldest member Ivor Burnell-Jones who celebrates his 97th birthday this week. T.A.G. tutor Lyn FraserRoberts performed the official opening and donated a painting for the raffle which was won by Peter Harris of Tewantin. T.A.G. artist Jean Parker of Black Mountain won the Peoples Choice prize. The Art Show was open all weekend and proceeds from the entry, raffle and book sales raised an amazing $1500 which has been donated to Katie Rose Cottage in memory of Gwen Blair. The members of Tinbeerwah Art Group would like to thank all those who generously supported our show and made donations.

Local quality residential lots ‘rare as hen’s teeth’ WITH new lots at Erindale Park scheduled to hit the market in coming weeks, Cooroy Real Estate Agents are joining forces to sell these rare quality parcels of residential land. Local estate agency hinternoosa will coordinate the sale of Erindale Park’s new release, with principal agent Murray Brown choosing to work with all local real estate representatives to promote Erindale Park and its many benefits. “Hinternoosa has sold more than 20 residential lots in the last 12 months across the region - but demand is definitely outstripping supply,” Mr Brown said. “Right now, high quality, flat and affordable residential land lots are virtually impossible to find with estates from Eumundi to Pomona nearly out of stock. “New land releases at Erindale Park present a great opportunity. Buyers can purchase offthe-plan to secure a place in this much sought-after area. Pre-purchasing also allows buyers to lock in today’s price, guarding against the rising cost of residential land.” Mr Brown said there were a number of other key advantages that set Erindale Park apart from its competition. “Erindale Park’s developer has committed to complete site works as standard across Erindale Park lots, prior to the start of construction. This absorbs a significant cost for buyers and means each lot is flat and ready to build your dream home. “Other key benefits include the generous landscaping bonus offered with house and land packages, which includes turf, a concrete driveway and garden fence. “Erindale Park lots will also have access to seven acres of parklands featuring walking paths, bike tracks and green open space for

Murray Brown and David Crerar from hinternoosa, look forward to finding buyers for Erindale Park. families and friends to enjoy.” Mr Brown said the size and shape of lots at Erindale Park were another important feature offering home builders a broad choice in the style of homes to be built across the estate. “Some lots have street frontage or park frontage of over 50 metres, giving buyers the option of building grand acreage style homes, with plenty of room left for lawns, a swimming pool, caravan or garden shed. “Other lots lean towards a more compact home - perhaps for people wanting to downsize. “It truly is a place that can accommodate anyone from first-home buyers, to families, to retirees. It has options to suit all budgets and tastes, in an area destined to be one of Cooroy’s premier residential addresses.” For more information about Erindale Park visit www.erindalepark.com.au or contact David Crerar from hinternoosa on 0418 712 054 or (07) 5447 7000 or email: davidc@hinternoosa.com.au

Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society

Nita Bettridge ORCHIDS are one of the easiest plants to cultivate especially in the sub tropical climate on the Sunshine Coast and hinterland. There are in excess of 30,000 species of orchids in the world found on all continents except Antarctica. Orchids are broken up into two main groups, the ones that grow on trees (epiphytes) and the one that grow on the ground (terrestrials). You do need to know the difference as they have completely different growing conditions. This is where joining an Orchid Society helps. I have plants growing in my garden some in full sun and others in the shade. They definitely look exotic when in flower. Most of orchid in cultivation originate in South America or South East Asia so need a little more care than our Australian natives in the way of water and humidity. Orchids hate being grown in pots but human nature is to control nature so we cultivate them in pots to sell or transport easily. When growing in pots you should repot every two years to stop the roots from rotting, you also have to provide all nutrients and moisture for the potted plants. Now is the most important time of the orchid calendar as it is ideal for repotting because the plants have new growths and new roots. You often hear (Orchids) don’t need water but they are living things and need regular care. The Noosa Society meets at the Tinbeerwah Hall the first Saturday of the month at 1pm for a 1.30 start. Visitors are welcome. For more information contact John Green, President Noosa District Orchid &Foliage Society on 54832764 or check our web site.

A very social hub THE most recent initiative in Cooroy is the Cooroy Sports Hub. The Hub is a re-energised renovation of the old Bowls Club and has taken some time to emerge because it grew even as it was being built. The building at 5 Opal Street, Cooroy is modern, sophisticated and accommodating in ‘the new country style’ with a façade that will be reminiscent of our new library. On entry, the diamond polished floor, elevated slatted foyer and wallless interior give an overwhelming sense of space. The five-metre doors bring the outside in, leading onto a floodlit beer garden and alfresco area. The decor features clean lines and Scandinavian style blond-wood furniture, softened by the addition of a lounging conversation pit. The extended bar gives a sense of stepping inside a rusty kettle with a tasteful blend of brass and copper tones. It is named ‘The Hub’ because that is what is intended - to become the social hub of

It’s the perfect place for families who want to enjoy the community spirit the town is known for. The Hub offers the ideal

Bookings are also being taken now for the Melbourne Cup Luncheon. Cost is $45 per head for a three-course lunch that includes a glass of champagne or

For the love of pizza

NATHAN Derome, owner of Gold Creek Pizza in North Arm says he first fell in love with “pizza” as a young boy growing up in Sydney. “I grew up in Bankstown, Birrong to be exact, and we had this amazing Italian family restaurant. It was a huge place to my little eyes. With a massive stone faced pizza oven set into the building, the smells and sound coming from behind that counter meant my father had to constantly pick me up to see what was happening back there. I am a behind the veil kind of guy. “Needless to say that stuck with me, so after years of slogging it out in other people’s kitchens from cafés to fine dine, the time came to open my own place. Logically I went for my first love, pizza. “Love, respect, and creativity, not to men-

tion great pizzas and awesome desserts is the vibe we went for with Gold Creek Pizza,” says Nathan. “Wherever possible we are using organic & local products, however being a Pizza Place this can be tricky at times, and we always endeavour to do our best. “We have several vegetarian options including our most popular pizza the “Prima Vera” – Herb roasted pumpkin, artichoke hearts, Roasted Red Caps & Button mushrooms & rosemary on a nap sauce base. We have the Option 1 which is a 3 cheese blend, or the Option 2 which is baby spinach and garlic oil, no cheese. “We run our menu in a slightly differing way to others. We have “naked” pizzas, these have no Nap Sauce and we have “Fully Dressed” which is our Nap sauce based pizzas. What are you waiting for? Call in and say Hi, to Nathan and Melanie, they’d love to cook you a pizza or drop in for a coffee and menu perusal. Be sure to check us their Facebook page at GoldCreekPizza. Ph 0401 482 574.

dining & entertainment Pacific Chamber Players at Cooran

THE third and final concert in the series for 2014 will be performed by the Pacific Chamber Players on Saturday 8th November, 2pm, at Cooran. The 18th century music programme will feature music by Brandle, Ries and Mozart. A virtual unknown composer, Joseph Brandle , who was born in Bavaria in 1760 was self taught apart from some ‘polishing’ in a Monastry and Catholic seminary. He wrote a large number of quintets for the Bassoon and it is thought that he wrote these for his wealthy client, Jacques Hardman, an enthusiastic Bassoonist. Brilliant local Bassoonist Neil Heymink, will perform in the Quintet for Bassoon, Piano and strings in F Major, op 13. Neil will again perform, this time with cellist Anne Bowyer, Mozart’s Duo for Bassoon and Cello, K292. Janet Brewer (piano), violinist Julie Anne O’Reilly and clarinettist Graham Evans.will delight the

audience with Piano Trio in Bb, Op 28 composed by Ferdinand Reis, born in Bonn about 1784 and who secured a position with Ludwig Beethoven and became a lifelong friend, pupil and secretary and copyist to the great composer Andrew Pazskowski, Viola, Julie Anne O’Reilly, Jenny Vandenberg (violin), and Anne Bowyer, cello. Will end this entertaining programme with Mozart ‘s String Quartet in Bb K458 (‘The Hunt) . The programme provides a beautiful variety of chamber music befitting an afternoon concert in a Sunshine Coast Setting, (instead of the palacial settings of the period in Europe!) Tickets priced at $25, $20 (concession), $15 each for a group of 8 persons with students 15 years and under, $5. The Pacific Chamber Players have been invited to be part of the Brisbane based radio 4MBS music festival in 2015. Further details of the concert will be detailed on the website in 2015 –

Gift wrapping supports hospice

Pat Atkinson with a volunteer, with the biggest gift wrapped last year SUNSHINE Hospice Fundraising team member Pat Atkinson, knows more than most people that Christmas is not far away.

Pat knows Christmas means presents and for the hospice it represents Christmas Gift Wraps which when undertaken by volunteers and for a gold coin donation provide vitally important additions to its revenue. “The hospice cares for terminally ill people at its six bed facility at Doonan at no charge to its guests, and with a minimum of government help, on-going funding is critical,” Pat said. “Last year more than 100 volunteers gave of their time to the gift wrap at the Sunshine Plaza in Maroochydore, and this year we will be looking for even more help.” Pat said the gift wrap runs from Monday, December 1st up to Christmas Eve. Shifts are four hours long, it’s busy but not difficult, and it’s extremely enjoyable. Consensus from the volunteers was that it’s fun! “So if you like having fun, being busy, contributing to a worthwhile charity, and enjoy all the excitement of Christmas, please find out more about volunteering for this,” she said. “ You can do so by emailing or ringing me, pat.atkinson1@bigpond.com, 5442 2485, 0404 980 222.”

Buddies for kids for Christmas GRAB your friends, family and work mates and get into the Christmas Spirit and come along to a fantastic afternoon of music and fun while helping out a very worthy cause along the way. Buddies for Kids for Christmas, a fundraiser to help at risk children in our community, will be held on 16 th November 2014 at Club Cooroy (RSL), Maple Street Cooroy from 12 noon. The event will be hosted by Keely Jackson (Scentsy Consultant) and Debbie Turner. The two girls got together and thought what can we do to help at risk children in our local community. Keely has the product and Debbie has the drive to get in and do for others, so Buddies for Kids came to life. “Oz Bayldon (founder of Music 4 Children) is a friend of Keely’s and after he agreed to help out

with some music, things really started to move along,” said Deb. Oz has many achievements to his credit including a world record for playing the highest gig (Mount Everest), building an orphanage in Nepal and a free creative education school in London. He will be gathering some musical mates to provide the musical entertainment for the afternoon. Rachael Witton, Business Development Manager at SunnyKids gratefully accepted the girls’ offer of raising as much money as possible to buy buddies to give to at risk children in our local area. “SunnyKids is grateful for the efforts of Keeley, Debbie and the strong community spirit in Cooroy, we encourage you to get behind this great event and be part of bringing some joy to

at risk kids”, she said. Club Cooroy (RSL) will provide a light meal which is included in the $20 per person ticket cost. Bookings are essential, please call the club on 5447 6131 and book your seat today. Pre purchase tickets are available by contacting Debbie 0407 476 814

or Keely 0439 341 097. Buddies are available for purchase at $39 each. If you are unable to make the day and wish to purchase a buddie, Keely and Debbie can help you with the purchase. The girls have been busy collecting donations for the mega raffle being

drawn on the day. Further donations will be greatly appreciated. Please contact Keely or Debbie if you, your family, friends or any business can help. “All money raised will be used to purchase buddies, the more buddies we can purchase the more children we can help,” said Deb.

SPECIAL

The whole truth - simple ways to detox

THROUGHOUT our life we are exposed to many toxins, from the day we are born we are constantly relying on our body’s detoxification pathways to eliminate at a constant rate and prevent toxic accumulation.Simple ways to combat common toxic symptoms is to not only Detox yearly, but constantly consume liver supportive and detoxifying foods, such as dandelion root, broccoli sprouts, spinach, chlorella, and chlorophyll. These antioxidant foods support detoxification by providing essential nutrients, and assisting to balance acidity. Some would say you can’t go past Apple Cider Vinegar, or some simple lemon in warm water, to help alkalise the body and boost toxic elimination. Keep it simple this spring: reduce processed foods, increase whole fruits, vegetables, nuts and lean meat, and eat (or drink) your greens. This simple dietary change will provide a great amount of dietary fibre, which may assist faecal movement through the colon, keeping you sparkly clean from top to toe. Why not try starting these beautiful Spring days with a green smoothie? Five steps to a perfect Green Smoothie 1. Start with a good handful of greens. Choose from spinach, kale, rocket, tatsoi, bok choi, or cos lettuce. If you are new to green

www.cooroyrag.com.au

smoothies, I recommend starting with a small handful of spinach and gradually increasing as your taste buds acquire a new taste (and your cravings demand more!). Rotate your greens regularly to keep it interesting and balanced. You can include some fresh herbs in your greens mix too, like basil, coriander and parsley. 2. Next add some fruit. Banana, apple, orange, lemon, lime, kiwi, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, mango all make for beautiful smoothies and you can choose whether you prefer a creamy smoothie (banana or mango), a berry (more of a purple smoothie) or a more citrus based smoothie (orange, lemon, lime). Start off including a moderate amount of fruit (up to two pieces) and gradually reduce as you get used to the green goodness. You can also top your blended smoothie with fresh passionfruit or berries. 3. Then the liquid. Explore different nut milks (almond, cashew, Brazil nut, cashew), coconut milk or cream, coconut water (even try a fresh young coconut and include the scraped out flesh), or just filtered water or ice. 4. Blend for 1-2 minutes until creamy. 5. Additions. You can boost your smoothie to include more protein, vitamins and minerals by adding extras like hemp seeds, Maca powder, Macqui berry powder, bee pollen, Acai berry powder, Spirulina or Super Greens powder (chlorella, alfalfa, barley grass, wheat-grass), cinnamon, fresh ginger and turmeric. TIPS: make a few days worth of ingredients in advance. Put your greens and fruit in ziplock bags and store in the freezer ready to add to your blender with liquid of choice. On cooler days or to give your digestive fire a boost, make your green smoothie room temperature by blending for 2-3 minutes and serve at room temperature. Here is a great Green Smoothie for beginners:

Goodness Gracious Green Smoothie Serves 1 GF DF VG In a blender add: 1 large handful spinach, 1/2 frozen banana, 1/4 cup pineapple, 1/2 cup almond milk, 2 cups filtered room temp water and blend for 2 minutes. Top with bee pollen for extra energy and a sprinkle of desiccated coconut for good luck. This makes a very liquid smoothie and I usually drink this throughout the day. Students on the Run for Funds PRIMARY students from Noosa Christian College, Cooroy will be running in the adidas School Fun-Run this Friday October 24th, to raise vital funds for their school. After a very successful event in 2013, students have again been preparing for the run and seeking support from the local community through sponsorship. “The adidas School Fun-Run presents an excellent platform to get students excited and involved in physical activity”, said teacher Mr Adam Coe. “I am very proud of the students for getting involved”. “Noosa Christian College, Cooroy is setting a new standard for other schools to fol-

low by choosing a way to raise money that is supportive of the ‘Nutrition in Schools’ policy and delivers positive messages about the importance of physical activity to a child’s healthy growth and development. I think it’s wonderful that organisations such as adidas and CUA are making this style of health-based school fundraising possible””, said Brendan Hopp, General Manager of The Fundraising Group. Look out for Noosa Christian College students and support them if you can with a few dollars - you’ll be making a difference to their fundraising goal and encouraging them to do their best.

The players trained together for 3 days prior to the championships. Established in 1981, School Sport Australia is responsible for the development and promotion of school sport in Australia. sport UNLIMITED GOLF after 3pm only $15 Keeping in Touch AN enormous week of Touch Football action saw our normal fixture round as well as over 100 of our junior players participate in the annual Queensland All Schools Touch Carnival. The carnival was held over four days in Brisbane with over 3000 players from around the state participating over the duration of the event. Our players competed in their school teams from Noosa District State High School, Sunshine Beach State High School, Good Shepherd Lutheran College and St Andrew’s Anglican College. The standard of the carnival was extremely high and all of the teams should be congratulated on their superb efforts. Thank you to the schools, coaches, players and parents for their time, effort and financial commitment in the continued support of our game and association. A battle of the Good Shepherd U10’s got last Wednesday’s games underway with the boys taking the win against the girls this time around. Charlie, Bronte, Macie and Levi had great games for their teams. In a close match Purple Panthers proved too strong in the end over Pink Storm with Lilliana, Breanna and Elle performing well. The Screaming Iguanas and Blazers played a tough match with the Iguanas coming out on top. Zayne, Curtis and Thomas all had mighty games. The U12 division saw the Banana Splits put in a tough fight before That Cool Team took the points. Emily, Holly and Lily led the way for their teams. Saints and GSLC (girls) played well with Saints taking the win with Ryan, Harriet and Levi giving strong performances. Devils were gallant in their loss against Vipers with Harrison, Flynn and Will showing great play.
