A Moment in Time for Bendigo Bank Street Parade! Christmas in Cooroy is celebrating 15 years on Saturday 7 December and to mark the momentous occasion, the theme for this year’s Bendigo Bank Street Parade is “A Moment in Time”. Spectators line Maple Street for the beloved parade and you can expect there will be some interesting floats from local community groups and businesses this year! With the “Moment in Time Theme”, we will probably see some flash backs to significant periods from the past like the Roaring 20s, the Roman Empire or the

moon landing. One thing is for certain – there will be lollies, laughs and fun for all to share. Christmas in Cooroy is one of the most anticipated events of the festive season. With free rides, entertainment, fun activities and even an appearance from the jolly man in red; it is truly no wonder that crowds flock to enjoy this incredible festival. Every year Christmas in Cooroy showcases dozens of the best dressed floats the Noosa Hinterland has to offer and the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank

has been proudly sponsoring the Street Parade for over a decade. “Christmas in Cooroy is an amazing festival - it’s so much fun and it really showcases Cooroy’s amazing community spirit. Volunteers, community groups and businesses all work together to produce something quite special. The event has a wonderful community atmosphere and it’s an event we are proud to support and love to attend,” said Cooroy Community Bank Senior Manager, Simone Flavelle. Cooroy’s very own, Australian Body Art Festival is one of the events from across regional Queensland that will receive a boost in funding from the Palaszczuk Government, with Tourism and Events Queensland today launching the latest round of the Queensland Destination Events Program. Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said 20 events would receive a total of $828,000 across eight regions in the 13th round of QDEP funding. “We invest in events because they bring tourists to regional Queensland and support local jobs,” she said. “We work closely with organisers to maximise the impact of these events for our economy – encouraging tourists to stay in regional Queensland to experience what we have to offer,” said Ms Jones. Australian Body Art Festival is run by Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and attracts over 9000 attendees from around Australia and overseas to the 2 day event held in

Cooroy. It showcases world class body painting, wearable art, musicians and street performers and has an amazing unique community feel that is typically Cooroy. The event puts $1.5 million back to the local economy through visitor spend. “We are so excited to receive funding through the QDEP program, it’s a great event and to receive this support for marketing

will make a huge difference. We couldn’t do it without the funding support of grants and our awesome sponsors and encourage anyone interested in getting involved to contact us,” said Event Manager, Danielle Taylor. The Art Hub Cooroy’s latest exhibition features Christine Hopkins, Karan Gerard and Mary Bulloch. Art has always been a strong part of Beerwah artist Christine Hopkins’s life, and, despite a 14-year hiatus; Christine picked up the paintbrush again late 2017, with painting becoming an integral part of her being. 2018 saw Christine taking the plunge and having her first solo exhibition in September at Beerwah as well as several local art exhibitions in the Sunshine Coast region. Karan first began painting in oil with her father over 40 years ago. Karan now paints with watercolour, challenging herself to interpret each picture with an ex-

pressive or impressionist style. Karan is also obsessed with negative painting - creating an image by painting around it. Both of these techniques are evident in this exhibition. Mary’s intention is based on simple forms, inspired by nature. The process has an importance on the outcomes of Mary’s work. “Working with ceramics becomes a meditative process, as the medium coupled with the immediate environment; determine how the piece will eventually evolve. Every form is a highly individual, composite yet minimalist piece”. This not to be missed exhibition runs from October 25 - November 22 at The Art Hub Cooroy, 3/2 Emerald Street.

BOUQUETS & BRICKBATS BRICKBATS to Noosa Council for changing the two car parks in Emerald St outside Peter’s cafe and the German Bakehouse in favour of a Loading Zone. It takes away two valuable car spaces in an already crowded street and yet there is no visible advantage to any commercial business in that area. The only gain possible is the employment of already overworked signwriters. BOUQUETS to all the Community Groups and organisations and the volunteers who do so much work. Whether it’s fundraising or beautifying our town or putting your hand up for jobs that need to be done, we thank you. Where would we be without you? BOUQUET to our local drivers who know the road rules at our Elm & Maple Street roundabout crossing. You can tell that visitors, L-platers and P-platers get confused as to who gives way here and I’m sure a lot of accidents are avoided because most of us are aware of this and are patient and accommodating. I’m sure it’s appreciated.

How Christmas in Cooroy benefits all of us Simone Flavelle, Senior Branch Manager, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Through our Community Bank branches right here in the hinterland, I’ve come to learn there is no power for change greater than our community discovering what it cares about. By supporting our local businesses and events, we enhance our community experience for everyone who live and work here and those who visit out magic part of the world. Well, it’s time to circle your diaries, because one of those is Christmas in Cooroy. On Saturday, December 7, we will all be celebrating the 15th anniversary of this great community get-together. It’s still widely recognised as one of the best events on the coast and Cooroy swells to capacity on the day. I’m proud to say our Cooroy Community Bank branch has been a sponsor of the Christmas in Cooroy Street Parade for more than 10 years. Along with the other sponsors, we look forward to seeing thousands turn out to really get into the Christmas spirit. Apart from the amazing work done by the Chamber of Commerce and so many other community volunteers, Christmas in Cooroy ensures exposure for our region and attracts customers to our town. It’s a great example of our community supporting and celebrating itself. So, as we gear up for what is sure to be a great day in only six week or so, it’s important we keep supporting local businesses wherever we can to keep our profits local. Food, produce and services – so much of it is right here in the hinter-

land. It’s no co-incidence this is what we do at all our Community Bank branches across the country. It’s generating profits from our branches which we, in turn, give back to our community. We ask locals to bank with us so we can keep making a difference right here. If you would like to learn more about the many ways your Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches are involved in our community, contact me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona) or on email at simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au and see how doing your banking with us makes a difference for all who live here.

Noosa councillors making their mark Cr Ingrid Jackson, who since her election in 2016 has pursued greater transparency and accountability at Noosa Council, has announced she will not stand for reelection next year. Cr Jackson said she was making the announcement early to give time for capable people in the community to offer themselves for election. “Our community needs experienced, knowledgeable, hard-working and ethical people to lead it,” she said. Cr Jackson, the only woman councillor, said she had enjoyed representing the people of Noosa even though finding herself a minority of one on many important issues. “There is considerable pressure to conform,” she said. “Right from the start we

were told that councillors should operate, not as the independents the community thought it had elected, but as a team that would work in solidarity. There were directions given about the need to acquiesce to the team. To me, these were at variance with our role as independently-elected councillors, and even contradicted the rules that govern councillor behaviour.” Cr Jackson said that when she began to express independence on certain issues, it was often met with hostility. There have been 10 official complaints made about her of which eight were dismissed after formal investigation while a decision is pending on two recent ones. “Each of the official complaints, which I believe were politically inspired, imposed considerable stress, and that I am the only woman councillor has made such antagonism even more isolating and oppressive,” she said. But she had always felt she had the support of the community which was instrumental in maintaining her determination to press for greater transparency and accountability and for taking residents’ concerns seriously. “I feel I achieved some small success in enabling our major meetings to be video-streamed and council minutes to show how councillors voted, but too frequently my efforts to open the council to greater transparency fell on fallow ground,” Cr Jackson said. “Democracy dies in darkness and it withers when too much happens in the shadows behind closed doors and beyond the cameras.” Cr Jackson also said unelected influencers should never be accorded the ability to steer decisions, or to benefit from them. “I will look back on my four years in local government not with undiluted affection but as an important time in my life when I contributed what I could to make our community a better place. But in the meantime I will use my remaining time on Noosa Council to continue to press strenuously for the kind of progressive reforms I have been advocating.”

Ingrid made the announcement just before Cr Jess Glasgow made the news with his performance on the reality TV show The Bachelorette resulting in a call from Mayor Tony Wellington for his resignation. “I am calling on Cr Jess Glasgow to resign immediately from his role as Councillor of Noosa,” said Mayor Wellington. “With his appearance on the reality TV show The Bachelorette, Councillor Jess Glasgow has revealed behaviour that is totally inappropriate for a Noosa councillor, indeed for any individual. “The behaviour displayed was misogynistic, crude and highly offensive. “Whether or not Mr Glasgow was simply performing for the cameras, he showed incredibly poor judgement in allowing himself to be filmed lying, being extremely and consistently disrespectful of women, and outright offensive. “That he did so whilst referencing Noosa is of great concern to many Noosa residents, Noosa businesses, visitors to Noosa and our Council staff. After the first episode, I stated that Cr Glasgow would be referred to the Office of the Independent Assessor as a result of his behaviour bringing the Council and community into disrepute. Compounding this were untruths by Cr Glasgow told to the media suggesting that he had received the Mayor’s approval to appear on the TV program, as well as false statements about supposed accrued leave and pay entitlements. “Having now viewed the second episode of the program, I have spoken to Cr Glasgow and told him to seriously consider resigning from his position as Councillor on the Noosa Council. “Whilst I do not have the legal authority to remove a sitting councillor, he has arguably brought the Council into disrepute and undermined the good reputation of our Shire. Put simply, there is absolutely no room for vile misogyny and loutish behaviour in Noosa or in Noosa Council.” A remorseful Cr Glasgow stated he will not be resigning and will leave it for the public to decide his fate at the next election.

Healing neural networks from the past - a Weekend Retreat on Black Mountain, Nov. 2nd & 3rd. Neuroscientists tell us our behavior and emotions are driven by wiring in the brain that is 90% out of our awareness – meaning it is pre-programmed!! No wonder we often feel that we don’t understand ourselves or wish that we knew how to react or feel differently to what is happening in our lives. We can often blame or judge ourselves for how we feel or what we think and wish that we could do better. In this weekend we will come to understand that this comes from our early childhood experiences and, more importantly, from the capacity of our caregivers to tune into and help us with our emotions. The great news is that the brain can be rewired and that LOVE is the most potent way to do it!! Knowing how to overcome pain, trauma and judgement in order to love ourselves is a mature skill that many of us entered adult life without. This fun and loving weekend WILLchange how you feel about yourself and your life!! In a small group we will make space for you and your Inner Child self to feel safe and seen and heard. We will learn how to love and support this beau-

Marjori Adelaide Aspinall 30.8.40 – 17.9.19 Marj was born in Gympie and grew up on her parents’ dairy farm at Evans Road in Cooroy. She rode her horse Darky to school each day. After leaving school her first job was at Woombye as a telephonist. She lived in the hotel. Marj met her husband Reg at Woombye. They married and had three children, Robert, Peter and Jenny, and lived in Cooroy. Marj worked at the Cooroy exchange as a telephonist. She also worked for Parry’s Corner Store for some time and at the Cooroy RSL as well as picking beans. After Reg and Marj parted company she moved to Emerald where she worked in a hotel before moving to Springsure where Marj met Bobby Aspinall. They moved to Meteor Downs and had their son Kevin. Marj started work at the station as the cook for up to ten men. Marj loved to cook and all the men on the station loved her cooking. Everyone loved her tomato relish. After Marj and Bobby separated, Marj and Kevin moved to Eumundi. They moved into a cottage on Tempelton’s Farm. Marj started to work for John Templeton where she picked ginger and worked in the ginger shed. One thing Marg was never afraid of was hard work. After a few years she worked at John Templeton’s home doing house duties and preparing meals. She also enjoyed minding the children until she retired. Marj loved to help with fundraising. She devoted countless hours to many different causes over her lifetime. From helping organise mini rodeos at Cooroy and Pomona to the goose club at Joe’s Waterhole where she helped for many years. She also had a great input into the swimming pool at Eumundi.

When Marj became unwell she moved in with her daughter Jenny for a short time, but as she began to need more care she went to live at Kabara where she made many good friends, including her little mate Vinnie who would come and check on her every day and never forgot her birthday. As she became more unwell she would say, “I’m not going anywhere, I still have a few more people to upset and give a cheeky gin to.” Marj loved to fish, including going up the beach with the fishing club from time to time and just throwing a line in the river. Her great mate Didi would make some sandwiches, grab a couple of ciders, pick up Marj and off the two would go to the river for a fish and good old chin wag. Marj also loved to play Keno and have the odd bet with her good mates Kev and Geoff. Marj was a hard working loveable, cheeky person. She would speak her mind. A lot of people at Kabara loved her and her personality. But the fight got too much in the end. Marj earned her wings. Fly high Marj. Be at peace and be free. The family would like to thank all the staff at Kabara for looking after and loving Marj.

Full line-up released for Offbeat Music Festival The Offbeat Music Festival has released the full line-up for the event, taking place on Saturday 2 November at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi, with more than 20 bands scheduled to perform on five stages throughout the day and into the night. Festival Organiser Alice Jones says the festival showcases a wealth of great talent guaranteed to get the groove just right. “We’re thrilled to be welcoming headlining acts from interstate like The Beautiful Girls, Vaudeville Smash and Kallidad, as well as some of Brisbane’s best in bands like Blues Arcadia, Black Rabbit George, Kurilpa Reach and First Beige,” she says. “Of course the Sunshine Coast has produced so many killer bands too, many of which have huge followings beyond our patch of paradise,” Alice says. Alice says local acts featuring on the OFFBEAT line-up include the one and only OKA, along with amazing performers Ayla, Ruby Gilbert, Fieu, Fragile Animals, Dorah Jacson, Streams, Malia Stirling, Zac Gunthorpe, Tobias, The Crikeys, Alfanant, The Lots, The Rumbrellas, Renny Field and more. “It’s sensational to have a chance to bring these artists together – and it is going to be hard to decide who to see on the day,” Alice says. “It’ll be a choose-your-own-adventure of fine tunes and good times in the truly unique venue we have here in The Imperial Hotel and Eumundi Brewery.” And why OFFBEAT? Alice says the festival promises to be just that. “A little offbeat, a bit quirky, a little off the beaten track, and a bit of the unexpected!” “Excitement is building and tickets are selling fast, so we’re encouraging music lovers to get their tickets now to avoid disappointment as we are strictly limited with numbers,” Alice says. The festival will take place from 12noon – late. Festival-goers keen to camp in Eumundi are advised to contact either The Eumundi Showgrounds on 5442 7224 or Eumundi RV Stopover on 0412 566 671. N.B. Did you know that one in nine people in Australia have asthma?! It is a disease that can affect people of all ages and something that we really should have some understanding of. Unfortunately, we are currently unable to “cure” asthma; but we have many different management strategies in the pharmacy that can manage our patients’ symptoms quite well. There are many different symptoms which may accompany the condition; however, the most common are: Breathlessness; Wheezing; A tight feeling in the chest; Continuing cough. Children can often show other signs such as: Not eating or drinking as much as usual; Crying; Having a stomach ache and/ or vomiting; Tiring quickly; Getting more “puffed out” when exercising/running etc. What is actually happening in the body of an asthmatic? Muscles in the airways tighten and the lining of the airway then becomes swollen/inflamed; this in turn produces a sticky mucous. Over time these changes cause the airways to become narrow, making it difficult to breathe. Asthma symptoms are often worsened by what we refer to as “triggers.” A trigger is something that irritates the airways and may differ from person-toperson.

Some of the more common triggers include house dust mites, animal fur, pollen, tobacco smoke, exercise, cold air and chest infections. Asthma patients need to see their doctor regularly and will generally be given a “management plan” detailing their specific instructions for treatment/management of an attack. Depending on the severity of the condition, the patient may use a “reliever” medicine just when having an attack, or they may be using “preventative” medicine every day in more severe cases. In any case, we are here to help and guide you through your individual treatment/management plans, so come in and speak with your LiveLife Pharmacist today! We will ensure you know exactly how and when to use your medications and help you to feel better sooner! www.cooroyrag.com.au

Move more, sit less More movement in your day can improve mental, physical health and even workplace productivity. Physiotherapists know that one of the most significant contributors to pain and injury is simply lack of physical activity. Getting more movement in your day doesn’t need to be about highintensity exercise, all movement can be beneficial. Here are a few tips to help increase the amount of motion in your day. 1. Try the Pomodoro Technique at work or when studying The Pomodoro Technique, developed in the late 1980s, recommends breaking work into intervals, usually 25 minutes at a time interrupted by short rests. Studies’ have shown that by creating small time limits, you can focus more intently and the breaks can be useful motivators. Use these intervals as prompts for a short walk, some squats or stretches. Not only will you have made your day more productive, but you will also have added some movement to your day. 2. Challenge a friend to match your steps A little healthy competition is a great way to keep you motivated to move more. You can set daily, weekly and monthly targets and compare progress to keep you on track. You can use an

app like ‘Habitica’ to help track and create movement habits in a game format. 3. Park further away This is an oldie, but a goodie. If you can’t ride or walk to your daily destinations, try parking further away and using the opportunity to walk. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator and getting up and walking while taking phone calls are also great ways to increase your daily movement. 4. Have a kettle boiling exercise routine. The time spent waiting for the kettle to boil can feel like an eternity. Use this time to undertake a mini exercise routine. Try fitting in two sets of five squats, five lunges; five heel raises or try to balance on each leg for two minutes. 5. Stretch before bed Gentle stretches before bed are a great way to relax and keep your joints mobile as well as preventing cramps. Create a routine and make it part of our nightly ritual for better sleep and a healthier body. Our physiotherapists are happy to help you find strategies to create more movement throughout the day. Come and have a chat with us to see what might work for you. Hinteractive Physio can be contacted on 5442 5556.

Showcasing innovations, invention and ideas AgVention is coming to the Mary Valley on Friday 25 October. Showcasing innovation, invention and ideas - AgVention is the brain-child of Tim and Amber Scott from Bos Rural and will be powered by the Food and Agribusiness Network. The event has attracted national interest with speakers and exhibitors coming from Silicon Valley, New Zealand and Tasmania including: Provenir Australia’s first mobile on-farm abattoir, Vence virtual fencing, Moovement livestock location trackers, Halo Robotics drone spraying, remote monitoring, irrigation controllers, inbuilt inverter solar pumps, non-chemical parasite control products and a brand-new USDA certified organic herbicide not seen on the Australian market (to name just a few). AgVention was conceived almost a decade ago after Tim Scott, at the time running the Australasian division for a multinational rural tech business, was seeing less innovation on the Australian agricultural field day circuit. At the same time, the international field days he was attending were noticeably more interesting. Realising this he envisaged that AgVention had to be different. “We have all spent days on end at field days looking for those little gems that have the potential to change the way we do business, AgVention circumvents that by only having exhibitors come with one product that has the potential to change agriculture,” Mr Scott said. “We want to hear from speakers that are inspiring, be introduced to food that’s local and source information that’s new.” Bos Rural has a regenerative agriculture focus and the shop has led the rural supply industry in being one of the first to eliminate synthetic fertilisers, herbicides, fungicides and most other chemicals from their range. AgVention reflects this passion to remove chemical from our food chain by attracting some never seen before, nonchemical and certified organic products. The event will exhibit a brand-new USDA certified organic herbicide that has the potential to replace current defoliant chemicals which has not been seen in the Australian market.

Quality food production at the grass roots level is a key focus of AgVention, according to event co-founder Amber Scott. “Ag tech has a bit of a bad reputation for innovation at the expense of food integrity,” she said. “AgVention seeks to bring together stakeholders across the breadth of agriculture, but ultimately to keep actual producers at the heart of the innovation process to ensure the end result is about producing better food.” The event will be powered by the Food and Agribusiness Network, which Bos Rural and Kandanga Farm Store are members of. FAN is Australia’s fastest growing food and agribusiness cluster and works with 300 members across the whole food value chain from Gympie, Noosa, Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay. FAN General Manager Emma Greenhatch said the group was excited to partner with Tim and Amber on the delivery of this unique event. “This event brings to life our network’s purpose of being a conduit for communication, promoting knowledge acquisition and sharing amongst our members and the broader industry,” said Ms Greenhatch. “We invite farmers, food producers, locals, businesses, companies and anyone who is interested in food production, agri-innovation and the future of farming to attend this valuable and informative event.” The event at the Kandanga Farm Store will feature four exhibition areas, a “Meet the Makers Market”, speakers tent and local entertainment. Panel sessions include The Future of Food, Farming with Integrity and Farming with Renewables. The day will be capped off with beers and banter in the “Sundowner Lounge” and a Field to Fork Feast featuring Gympie Gold Regional Produce (tickets are essential). The event is proudly supported by Gympie Regional Council, Rural Weekly and the Department of Innovation, Industry and Science Business Entrepreneurs’ Program. What’s happening in the market?

Last week the Hotspotting report says that the Sunshine Coast has become the strongest property market in Queensland, and has been boosted by its strengthening economy and major infrastructure spending. The Sunshine Coast was gifted pole position in the report, Investor Opportunities as Real Estate Rebounds, which was released by Ryder Property Research. Since 2014, according to the report 20,000 jobs have been created on the Sunshine Coast, bringing over $20 billion in infrastructure projects. Ad-

ditionally, private investment has either been completed, is under construction or in the pipeline, and with the Sunshine Coast International Airport expected to be completed next year, that growth is expected to power on. Few factors generate property price growth like major new infrastructure spending, which generates jobs, economic activity and improved amenity for residents, the report said. With interest rate cuts and an ease on lending, it has meant that we have more buyers entering the market and we are looking for new properties to match their needs. The Ray White team at Eumundi have an office conveniently located right across from the markets and with easy access to the Bruce Highway so this means we capture lots of buyer interest from the many visitors to the area. We also have had buyer enquiry locally as well as from down south and we are endeavouring to find suitable properties for these buyers. We would love to chat with you if you would like to capitalise on this interest and are considering selling or just want to find out what your property is worth. Please give Rita a call on 0434140940 or drop a line to rita.malone@raywhite.com

Little Ray of Giving A ‘Little Ray of Giving’ is an initiative of Ray White since 2012 with 300 Ray White offices across Australia and New Zealand raising gifts for disadvantaged families at Christmas. For years our family business at Ray White Dayboro has supported the ‘Little Ray of Giving’, and this year our Eumundi office will team up with local organisations to help us assist those going through a rough time and share the joy of Christmas. Please join with us as we collect gifts or food hampers from the first week in November, with distribution to the families around the 10th of December. These gifts will go under our ‘Little Ray of Giving’ Christmas tree in both our Dayboro and Eumundi offices.

www.cooroyrag.com.au

Over the years we have watched many Mums and Dads use this opportunity to encourage their children to show gratitude by giving a gift for child in need. It is a great help if the gifts are wrapped, however we are happy to wrap them if needed. Likewise, we appreciate you dropping them into the office in Eumundi right opposite the Eumundi Markets or we can collect them from you. Ensure if you wrap them first please let us know us know which age group your gift is suitable for and if it is for a girl or boy. It is a really simple way to put a smile on the face of a young child who might otherwise go without this Christmas. We’re proud of the difference our businesses are making to families who are struggling at an expensive time of year. Cooroy Rag, October 23, 2019 - Page 17

The landscaped gardens are low maintenance with several fruit trees – including macadamia, mango, pomegranate, lemon, lime, mandarin and banana – and a raised herb and thriving vegetable beds. With a land size of 976m2, there’s plenty of room to add a pool and or a large shed. Built around 100 years ago, the property is on town water and has NBN, so what are you waiting for? There is only one like this. To view this gorgeous property, contact Sam Hargrave 0425 777 121 - Ray White Pomona Hinterland.

Great performance by Cooroy gymnasts at State Championships WAG Level 5: Monique Blackmore: 1st All Around, 1st Floor, 2nd Vault Level 4: Anika Bojanowski: 2nd Beam MAG Level 6: Parker Anthony 2nd Pommel Level 5: Oscar Robinson 2nd All Around, 1st Parallel Bars, 1st Horizontal Bar, 2nd Rings Level 4: Mackenzie Jones 1st All Around, 1st Rings, 1st Parallel Bars, 1st Horizontal Bar; Dermott Craig 3rd All Around, 3rd Parallel Bars, 2nd Horizontal Bar Level 3: Elliott Clare: 3rd Floor and 3rd Vault The gymnasts are back already training hard for next year’s competition.

Gymnasts from Cooroy Gymnastics Club competed at the Queensland State Championships. This year the club had a team of fourteen athletes attending the annual event which was held at the Chandler Sports Arena in Brisbane. The five day event included almost 1000 gymnasts from over 60 clubs from all regions of Queensland. The WAG team consisted of Anika Bojanowski, Saskia Cook, Madeleine Stevens, Sienna Lambert, Monique Blackmore and Isabel Iriondo, with all girls competing in the individual competition and Monique also competing for the Sunshine Coast in the Qld Regional Team Challenge.

Noosa Hinterland Golf The most memorable golf and social experience

The MAG team was made up of, Zayden Johnston, Izzy Mackay-Masterton, Elliot Clare, Kahn Ormerod, Mackenzie Jones, Dermott Craig, Oscar Robinson and Parker Anthony. All boys competed in the individual competition with Mackenzie, Dermott, Oscar and Parker all representing our region and placing on the podium, with the level 4 team coming away with gold and the level 5/6 combined team taking silver. This year the club performed well across both gym sports, coming away with 8 State Championships and 18 individual medals as well as a first and second place in the regional team challenge.

Changes for Pomona Bowls Club The Pomona Bowls Club is changing its name and its focus to broaden its community connection. On October 12 the club was officially relaunched as Club Pomona, with a $1 annual membership for non bowlers. The relaunch featured a band, wine tasting, raffles, an extra session of the club’s popular Jag the Joker and a choice of bar food or a full menu from our King of the Mountain Bistro. An internal redesign is under way to improve the ambience and convert the premises into a licensed community club with a bowling green rather than just a bowls club. The recently elected chairman, Peter Read, said the aim was to attract wider community support and build a reputation as “our local watering hole” for all age groups. He said after several years of substantial losses, a new business model was needed to make the club viable. “Without broader support the club is unlikely to survive. To retain a viable community club in the town, we need this support – or another local asset will be lost,” Mr Read said. A block of land used as part of the club’s car park has been put on the market to help finance the restructure. The club has 12 poker machines and two of the older machines are about to be replaced with new units. More social events will be held to attract bigger numbers to the club and two performances by an Elvis impersonator were among the recent

successes. Bowls will continue to play an important part of the new club, with social members paying only $1 annually or $30 if they wish to play in interclub events. More serious members will pay a full membership with access to Bowls Queensland events. Mr Read sees stronger social and barefoot bowls as the key to a viable future. Barefoot bowls is being played on Thursdays from 6.30 – 7.30 pm and on Fridays at 4.30pm social team bowls are played with new and beginner bowlers always welcome. More Saturday and Sunday social competitions are also planned and family or business groups are welcome to hold private days on the green, with free loan bowls available. Ladies bowls is played on Wednesdays from 10am and men are also welcome for these games. A contract caterer provides bar food and bistro meals on Thursdays and Fridays and off-site catering for private events can be arranged. The bar and pokies are open from 11am on Mondays and Tuesdays and 10am on the other days. Other community and sporting clubs are being urged to make use of the Club Pomona facilities for regular or special gatherings and the club is an ideal venue for Christmas parties, birthdays, weddings, wakes or other special occasions. A courtesy bus is available, and pickups can be booked by phoning the club on 5485 1202.
