Exhibition in Cooroy Memorial Hall for Centenary of Armistice

SUNDAY 11 November 2018 is the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, when the guns fell silent on the Western Front, marking the end of World War 1. Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch has organised a special 10 day exhibition and display in the Cooroy Memorial Hall for the Centenary of Armistice.

“Many long hours of research and work have been done in the preparation of this exhibition which will tell the story of how and why the war began. It will display the history of the many battles that occurred where our young soldiers died,” said Ian Whisker, the Exhibition Director. Included in the display

will be many photos and information boards including material from the Maritime Museum and Adopt a Digger. Memorabilia will also be on display such as uniforms and a mock World War I trench that is being built inside the hall. Visitors can walk through the trench to experience the conditions that the troops fought under. En-

try to the exhibition is free and will be suitable for all ages. The whole community is encouraged to visit the display. An official opening of the display by Mr Llew O’Brien MP Federal Member for Wide Bay is to be held in the Memorial Hall on Thursday 1st November commencing at 4.00 pm. All who wish to attend are most welcome. The exhibition will be displayed in the Cooroy Memorial Hall from Thursday 1st until Saturday 10th November from 10am until 4 pm each day. On Sunday 11th, Remembrance Day a commemorative service will be held at the Cenotaph which will commence at 10.40 am. Funding from Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien through the Armistice Centenary Grant Program was received for this exhibition. “We all know 11 November as Remembrance Day, but its origins started 100 years ago when the Armistice ending the fight-

ing during the First World War was signed,” said Mr O’Brien. World War 1 began in 1914 and lasted for four years. More than 416,000 Australians volunteered for service in World War 1. Of these, 324,000 served overseas. More than 60,000 Australians were killed, including 45,000 who died on the Western Front in France and Belgium and more than 8,000 who died on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. In Australia and other allied countries, 11 November became known as Armistice Day, a day to remember those who died in World War 1. After World War 2, the Australian Government agreed to the United Kingdom’s proposal that Armistice Day be renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in both World Wars. Today the loss of Australian lives from all wars, conflicts and peace keeping operations is commemorated on Remembrance Day.

A Christmas light show for all to enjoy RUDOLF isn’t the only one who can light up the skies this December! Every year, Christmas in Cooroy showcases a truly magical light display. From the wonderous lighting of the Studio Steel Christmas tree outside the Cooroy RSL, through to the dazzling, twinkling decorations that our volunteers spend so much time hanging throughout Cooroy. Cooroy is always dazzling in December. But the stunning light show doesn’t stop there as the Cooroy RSL has been working a little elfish magic of their own and are generously sponsoring a firework display to blow your socks off at Christmas in Cooroy. The Cooroy RSL Fireworks will begin at 7:15pm on Saturday 1 December in the peak entertainment period of Christmas in Cooroy. The show will light up the sky from Apex Park and is always a firm favourite with the crowds, young and old alike. We want all the good boys and girls to have fun and enjoy this spectacular light show, so make sure you pack earmuffs if you’re not fond of loud noises! Similarly, if you live near Apex Park, we encourage you to ensure that all pets are secure and safe.

A blood-spattered zombie was the scariest ‘crow on display when ABC Sunshine Coast Radio’s Rob Blackmore donned his judging hat this year. The Brooloo Zombie by Myles Corcoran won the children’s category in the annual Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival, and no doubt will be a hit with bus tours already scheduled to visit the region. Mr Blackmore backed social media interest in The Lorax, inspired by the Dr Seuss children’s character and the Universal movie of the same name, giving the Artistic prize to its creators - the Fitzgerald family of Imbil. It very much captured Mr Blackmore’s imagination, and he was glad that someone was speaking for the trees! Go for a drive out to 668 Yabba Creek Road, Imbil to see the Lorax, and if you keep going to Borumba Deer Park, you can check out another great entry, Shifting Gears. Susanne Spokes of Imbil must have used a few bales of straw to create her masterpiece titled The Aussie BBQ, featuring at least six scarecrows in a scene that won her the Traditional scarecrow prize. All winners will receive $100 each and trophies at the annual Harvest Dinner (or is it an Aussie BBQ) with a seasonal banquet prepared by Kandanga Kitchen on Friday November 9. Book via Eventbrite. It is a quality scarecrow season this year and you can see them all yourself by downloading the Google map on the website – just scroll to the bottom of the page http:// www.maryvalleyartslink.com.au/mary-valley-scarecrowfestival Scarecrows will be on display until November 10. The festival is hosted by Mary Valley Artslink, which also brings you the Mary Valley Art Festival each July in Imbil. Don’t stray into Brooloo at night or the Brooloo Zombie might get you! It was judged the best Child entry for young Myles Corcoran.

A skill shortage area, the automotive industry, offers a broad and diverse range of careers that provide local, national and international career paths for trainees, apprentices and personnel in automotive industry manufacturing, retail and repair and maintenance operations. “Identifying an unmet need in the local area, Regional Training added the small engine course to its scope of registration. With the training program being run successfully for a number of years in

the Gympie region, it was decided to trial the program at Noosa district,” said automotive trainer Peter Casasola. Attending the course 1 day per week, students gain hands-on experience rebuilding engines, working with fuel and electrical systems along with servicing and repairing a variety of equipment and vehicles. Along with gaining practical life skills, students also complete 6 core units common to a number of automotive industry qualifications. “Completion of this course gives students interested in automotive related fields a huge advantage. All students completing the training have gained skill sets that are applicable to many different industry areas,” he said.

Family businesses Simone Flavelle, Senior Branch Manager, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches LOOSELY defined, a family business is that in which two or more family members work, and in which at least 50% of the ownership rests in family hands. Familyowned business is by far the largest sector in the Australian economy. If you operate a family business you will face some unique challenges. In addition to the typical concerns of a business of your size, in your industry, you will need to consider the following: • How can you balance the different needs, interests and priorities of family members and non-family members in your business? • How can you raise capital without sacrificing equity? • What criteria have you developed for family members joining the business? • Do you have a family council or other mechanism to ensure all family members have a say in the running of the business? • To whom will you pass control and/or ownership of your business? How can you ensure that this process is planned and orderly? Family businesses often lack the right outlook and professional management practices to maximise the long-term growth and value in their businesses. They have the strong desire to accumulate wealth, but few family businesses seem willing to accept outside investment or use modern business practices to maintain or increase their value. Key missing elements are a business plan with written job descriptions for management and a formal strategic plan. All businesses should also have a documented ownership succession plan. Other areas where family businesses could improve are having non-family board members, hold regular board meetings, have a plan to

address technological opportunities, make use of business-to-business e-commerce practices and benchmark their business against world best practice. It is clear that a lot of effort and heartache goes into building a business so don’t fail to extract the maximum value when you exit. Whether or not you are planning on selling your business in the near or distant future, there are some fundamental strategies that can protect and build the value of a family business. If you have any questions on your business would like to discuss any other banking matter, feel free to drop into the branch or call me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy), 5485 1786 (Pomona) or you can also email me at simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

Getting ready for retirement Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* AS you approach your fifties and sixties, you will probably start to think about retiring. For many women, this can herald a significant change in lifestyle. Some early planning for this new stage of life can help you enjoy a successful transition from work to your retirement. In Australia there is no fixed age at which women have to retire. Currently, you can access superannuation from age 55 to 60 depending on when you were born. You may be entitled to the age pension from age 65 to 67, depending on when you were born. Many women choose a gradual transition to retirement, often winding back their working days over a few years. This lets you become accustomed to a reduced workload and gives you time to develop hobbies or interests for later in your retirement. By delaying full-time retirement, you can also accumulate a larger nest egg. There are many options available to help you make the transition to retirement. For example, a transition to retirement income stream, or pension, lets you draw down your super to supplement your employment income when you cut back your working week. Case study: Jill, a 60-year-old divorcee, wanted to retire but was concerned about the loss of social contact and mental stimulation that work provided. ‘This year I’ve moved from a full-time role to a parttime position. Initially I felt I had a lot of time on my hands, so I joined the volunteer group at my local hospital, and now I feel busier than ever! ‘I’m still keen to stay on at work for a few more years but getting a taste of retirement has been really reassuring. I’m not so worried about being bored or lonely after I finish up with work. And by putting off my full retirement and not drawing on my retirement savings, my nest egg should last longer.’ Will you have enough money? The amount of money you will need to retire depends on your age and your intended lifestyle. Most retirees need more income in their first years of retirement when they might take the opportunity to travel or pursue hobbies. As they get older, their lifestyle winds down and they will need less income.

If you earn substantial take-home pay but still worry that your super won’t be enough to fund a comfortable retirement, it may be possible to give your nest egg a last minute boost. Speak to your employer about salary sacrificing, or contributing to super from your pre-tax income. While it means taking home less pay now, it is a simple way to add to your super. It may also be tax effective. If you’re on a lower income you may be eligible for a government co-contribution. Find out more from the Australian Tax Office: Super co-contributions. Our tax and super systems are complex. Getting good advice to help you navigate through your finances can make a big difference. For many women, retirement involves a significant change in lifestyle. Not only do you have more leisure time, you are likely to see a lot more of your family and friends. Talk to your partner about how you are both coping with retirement. Healthy communication will smooth the transition from worker to retiree, and let you make the most of this new stage of life. Like any of life’s milestones, retirement requires careful planning to make it fulfilling. Looking ahead at how much money you will need and what you like to do will help you ease into retirement and enjoy your accomplishments. Councils combine for sports plan SUNSHINE Coast, Noosa and Gympie councils have combined to produce the Draft Regional Facilities Plan for Difficult to Locate Sports to guide the need and location of regional facilities for four sports. The draft Regional Facilities Plan for Difficult to Locate Sports considers the needs of aviation (ultra-lights, model aeroplanes, para-gliding and hang-gliding), motorcycling, shooting and competitive powered water sports. Sunshine Coast Council endorsed the draft plan on October 12 and it will go to Noosa and Gympie councils to consider later this month. If approved by all councils, it will be available for the community to provide feedback from late October. Tourism, Events and Sport Portfolio Councillor Jason O’Pray said there were some sports which can be harder to accommodate than other sports for a range of reasons. “These sports generally require access to large sites where they can undertake their activities without adversely impacting on residents,” Cr O’Pray said. “There are challenges involved in locating, developing and managing facilities for difficult to locate sports and the three councils have agreed on a collaborative approach. “The aim is to share the overall planning and investment priorities for the four specific sports. “The draft plan has been prepared with input from sporting organisations and includes recommendations to guide the planning and development of the four difficult to locate sports and will assist in identifying short, medium and long term priorities.” External consultation occurred as part of the development of the draft plan, including reference groups and targeted consultation with relevant peak bodies, local organisations and clubs. “It is important to note the draft plan focuses on public land and community-based clubs and sports and does not include private facilities,” Cr O’Pray said. If the draft plan is approved by Noosa and Gympie councils, Sunshine Coast Council residents will be able to view it on council’s website and have the opportunity to provide feedback before November 23.

Cooroy Rotary President Warren O’Neill THE Rotary Club of Cooroy is honoured to contribute $11,675.20 to the Rotary Drought Assistance on behalf of the people who supported our Helicopter Ball Drop at the Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival 2018. Included are additional donations received from residents at the Cooroy Rotary sausage sizzle outside our local IGA, donations of more than $1,000 from the residents of Palm Lake Resort and almost $2,500 from the customers and management of the Pomona Pub. “We work with Rotary Clubs across the state including the Rotary Club of Pioneer Valley and the Rotary Club of Longreach to ensure that every cent we receive is given to help relieve the drought-

stricken farmers and their families,” said Cooroy Rotary President, Warren O’Neill. “Rotary has already delivered 3,700 tons of hay or 68 double road trains and this is organised at a central property where grazers can come to collect the hay and made a day of it.” “The project is run entirely by volunteers and every cent of the donated funds will go direct to those in need, and be spent locally for the ongoing benefits of the community in these difficult times. “To date 800 $250.00 debit cards have been distributed to enable farmers to spend the money locally to maintain the local commercial infrastructure of these remote communities.”

Bold as Love raffle winner Congratulation to winner of the Bold as Love Jewellery raffle David Beveridge. David won a jewellery hamper valued at $1000 including a $100 gift voucher.

From seed to tree An embryonic plant encased within my hands, unlike any I have seen before, glimmering golden in dazzling light, planted in nourishing soil, the shell releases the beginning of life concealed within, beams of light hit the young shoot as it bursts out of the moistened earth, the radiant golden stem began a metamorphosis into a youthful sapling, leaves that are a vivid, neon emerald green, I knew there was something peculiar about this tree, maybe it will teach me in the future – as we grow together. By Isaac (Year 3)

Woodland Creature His pleading voices bubbled in my mind, as I create him from moist earth I find, his fissured clay skin has always begged for pleasure, as he leads a life of total leisure. My little friend liked to play, in one place, he’ll never stay, he’s never had an evil thought, and in heroic battles, he’s never fought. His life ebbs away, he finally got his way, as he falls and cracks apart, from the earth his love departs. By Harley (Year 4)

The Bold as Love Jewellery raffle raised $350 towards the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce’s Xmas Tree Decoration Fund.

Gelignite Jack’s celebrate a Halloween Birthday THIS month Gelignite Jack’s in Cooroy celebrates its 16th Birthday, just in time for Halloween. Satish Lal, owner of this busy discount variety store has, as usual, embraced this day by stocking up on costumes galore. House and garden spooky decorations, fake blood, teeth, masks and gruesome accessories abound so beware - the Halloween aisle is alive with witches’ cackles, hanging mummies, skeletons, bats and spiders! Satish says that between 60 to 80 trick or treaters visit his house every year in Cooroy on Halloween night, all fully dressed in costume and his wife Jayshiree and their kids love it. Gelignite Jack’s always loves a dress up and has been a regular float participant in the Christmas in Cooroy street parade for the last 8 years where Satish, with his family and staff, go all out and are one of the most popular floats of the day. Satish is already busily planning this year’s float, as well as organising Christmas stock for the shop, which he is excited to say will see a better variety then ever at better bargain prices! Satish says 16 years ago there were six Gelignite Jack’s stores in the area from Nambour to Gympie, now the Cooroy Gelignite Jacks stands alone and Satish credits this to the fabulous support of the Cooroy people and wider community. He values this support very much and in turn is a great supporter of community organisations and events, including Christmas in Cooroy, Cooroy Fusion Festival, Pink Fun

An eclectic mix of all things French & Gorgeous The new owner of French & Gorgeous, Diane Rees, says she is finally living her passion for great food, fashion and home décor. Since taking over the Diamond Street business on August 1st, Diane has been busily re-organising, re-furbishing and re-stocking with an eclectic mix of all things French and gorgeous. The beautiful old world farmhouse is overflowing with luxurious French linen bedding, soft furnishings and home décor including lamps, tableware and giftware, and is the only stockist outside of Sydney of the popular Emma Bridgewater kitchen ware. For the fashionista there’s an abundance of Italian linen fashion as well as local labels including Hut, Georgie A, Noosa Living and Walnut. Belts, handbags, shoes, jewellery, French and Gorgeous can dress you from head to toe. The popular café has also been revamped, the flaky cherry pie, buttery croissants and other beautifully homemade pastries are still available, all baked in house, but Diane has revamped the lunch menu to include loads more savoury dishes which include Vegan, Paleo and gluten free options. So now you can browse the store, then enjoy lunch seated indoors around farmhouse tables, or relax in the stunning outdoor garden seating, where dogs are also welcome. French and Gorgeous is fast cementing itself as a Destination Stop in the Noosa Hinterland, and while Diane says she has a lot of out of town visitors and international shoppers, she gives heartfelt thanks to all the support the local community has shown and is grateful to be able to share her passion with them. If you’re having a wedding or function, the café and outdoor dining area is available for hire or for use for the wedding photography. If you’re at-

dining & entertainment Peter Rabbit on the Rooftop

COME along to the Cooroy Library Rooftop on Friday 2 November for the screening of ‘Peter Rabbit’. 88 artists on show at BFAC

(L-R) ‘Roy’ by Lisa Jones; ‘Bottlebrush’ by Holly Leonardson, ‘Under the Sea’ by Linda Clarke. SEE for yourself if the Sunshine Coast has a visual language of its own at Cooroy’s Butter Factory Arts Centre. BFAC presents four group exhibitions in its second last exhibition program of 2018, showing the works of 88 Sunshine Coast-based artists and creatives until November 27. Their annual members exhibition, ‘Eclectica’ shared its opening night with the cultural centre’s Inaugural Portrait Prize, ‘Local Heroes’ on Saturday October 20. All up, 88 artists will have

works on the walls – an experience that stands to offer a broader insight, according to BFAC coordinator, Alicia Sharples. “It’ll be fantastic to see the works of so many artists on show in the same space. All these artists, from the school students through to some of our region’s most accomplished professional artists, share the experience of living on the Sunshine Coast,” Ms Sharples said. “And while each show has either no theme, or a very broad one like ‘Local Heroes’, it’ll be fantastic to see if there is some sort of

shared visual language between the works. “We’d love to hear people’s response to that.” Sunshine Coast based Archibald Prize finalist,

Jandamarra Cadd will judge entries in the ‘Local Heroes Portrait Prize’. Known for our love of the environment and wildlife, Sunshine Coast art often

depicts elements from the natural world but what other similarities might we find? Or, is there little to no connection between an artist and its environment?

Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society THE Noosa Society has recently conducted its Spring Show in Cooroy and would like to thank all those people who attended to see the great range of Orchid flowers from around the world. You are welcome to attend the meetings held at Tinbeerwah hall on the second Saturday of the month. The meeting time is 1pm for a 1.30 start. Most meetings have a quest speaker and plant sales; there is always a mini show from the members showcasing their flowers that are in bloom at the time.

Some of Will and Alice’s grandchildren who enjoyed a great day telling stories, swapping photos and catching up. Back Row:- Greg Warner, John Burrell, Laurence Dobe, Ross Burrell, Janet Reid, Bill Reid, Annette Craine (Warner), Desleigh Barrow (Reid), Peter White, Alan Warner, Ken Burrell. Front Row:- Robert Dobe, Karen Adams (Dobe), Kerry Parry (White), Lynda Johnston (Reid) A reunion was held on Saturday October 13 at Cooroy Car Club to mark 100 years of the Reid Family in Cooroy. Wilfred and Alice Reid married in 1918 and resided all their married life at 59 Maple Street, Cooroy. They were some of the early settlers in Cooroy and Alice was a member of the CWA and enjoyed doing many different types of craftwork including caneware, shellwork, feather flowers and toymaking to name a few. Wilfred Reid bought 25 bee hives from his parents’ home at Booval, Ipswich when he moved to Cooroy with Alice and their land ran from Maple through to Myall Street (4 large blocks). He built his first honey shed with a bark roof and 2 frame extractors. These were turned by hand when used to extract honey from the frames. Wilfred had trucks to transport the hives to heavily timbered areas near the coast - during winter for the Ti-tree and inland during summer for the Box and Iron-bark. Some of the sites were

Landsborough, Caloundra, Kenilworth and Tewantin. Robbing the hives was often done with voluntary help, men and boys found a few days camping, fishing and robbing hives was most enjoyable. In 1942 a two storey honey shed was built and at the peak of production up to 500 hives were in use and in a good season, needed to be robbed once a week. Honey was sent by rail in 60lb tins and labelled Reid’s Golden Seal Pure Honey. This honey was sold for 6 pence a pound then. Will and Alice had 6 children - Phyllis (Dobe), Marjorie (Warner), Bill Reid, Betty (Vickers), Marion (Burrell), and Lexie (White). They all enjoyed a wonderful childhood, camping at Noosa Woods, fishing, prawning, swimming and travelling all over the coast to camp near the local creeks and swimming areas, often with neighbours and friends along for the ride.

Probus Club of Cooroy

Lyn and Trevor Bunney, Rob Dayman, Ron Strudwick, Kathryn Poynter and Michael Fayne all members of the Cooroy Probus Club choosing their bowls before the roll up THE Probus Club of Cooroy meets on the first Monday of each month in the Anglican Church Hall, Miva Street at 10 am. A short meeting, a longer morning tea - time for a chat catch up with friend, followed by an interesting and informative guest speaker all helps our retired community members keep connected. This month our more active members tried their hand at lawn bowls while others enjoyed a happy hour cheering on from the sidelines. We joined forces for an excellent meal at the Saw and Mill where the staff were extremely attentive and professional. Highly recommended. Planning is underway for Christmas celebrations and for 2019. Anyone interested in learning more about the Cooroy Probus Club can come along to Dawn and Brian Jones watching and a monthly meeting or ring our membership officer, cheering on the Probus Club lawn John Pluck for more details m 0427 090 750. bowlers Page 14 - Cooroy Rag, October 24, 2018

10 years of optometry@cooroy

THIS year optometry@cooroy celebrates its 10 year anniversary of providing quality independent optometric eye care for the local Cooroy community and beyond from the

white and green house at 62 Maple Street. The story actually goes back even further as optometrist Heather McLeod commenced practice part-time in Cooroy in 1997.

Both the township of Cooroy and Heather McLeod Optometrists steadily grew until to meet an ever-increasing demand she invited Sunshine Coast optometrist Jenny Currie to join her as a business partner and thus optometry@cooroy was born in 2008. Both ladies have always endeavoured to provide a personalised service to their customers. It is not unusual for either Jenny or Heather to see a patient one day and then be standing beside them at the checkout at the IGA the next day. “When you work and live in a community you have to keep the service personal”, says Jenny. “We try to take time to explain a patients eye issues in a way they can understand” adds Heather. In the last 10 years the team at optometry@cooroy have continued to heavily invest in the latest technology including cameras and scanners to be used in monitoring eye health. Jenny and Heather emphasizes that there is more to a comprehensive eye examination than just checking eyesight and prescribing glasses or contact lenses and all of that certainly takes longer than the 15 minutes allotted elsewhere. The practice also helps a large number of paediatric patients whose parents bring them from as far afield as Kingaroy and Tin Can Bay to access the Behavioural Optometry services that Jenny and Heather provide. Behavioural optometry is

an expanded area of vision care that particularly considers how vision may impact learning as well as dealing with eye teaming and focus problems in people of any age. In 2014 Jenny’s husband Ray Smith joined the team as Practice Manager to allow the optometrists more time to concentrate on patient care rather than the day-to-day running of the business. With a previous background in Engineering, Ray admits his favourite part of the day is repairing spectacle frames that customers have damaged in sometimes unbelievable ways. Ray loves a challenge! He also has a goal to have and wear as many sets of glasses as Elton John. “We are proud to support Australian companies” says Ray. “We source most of our spectacle lenses from an Australian lens company and as many of our frames from Australian companies as we can. “We consider our suppliers to be part of the team that provide your spectacles and contact lenses. They must provide a quality product as well as keeping up with the latest fashion.” The future is looking bright for optometry@cooroy and the team have a vision to continue to provide ever improving eyecare for their patients through education and technology.

Fortnightly drop-in centre to help our most vulnerable COUNCIL has teamed up with a wide range of agencies and not-for-profit organisations to launch a fortnightly one-stop shop initiative to give vulnerable locals easy access to essential services. “Social Services Hub Day is a fortnightly dropin centre where those facing hardship can access doctors, and not-for-profit and government services to help them find accommodation and

employment, all in the one location,” said Acting Mayor Frank Wilkie. “Anyone who is experiencing homelessness, or is at risk of it, is welcome to the Hub Day at TaitDuke Community Cottage in Tewantin.” Agencies and not-for-profits working with Council will deliver the initiative, including Sunny Street, St Vincent de Paul, Red Cross Employment Services and Orange Sky Laundry.

Sunny Street provides health screening, disease support, wound care and preventative health services such as immunisation and education to those in need. “Sunny Street offers the opportunity to have a good conversation with doctors and/or nurses about their health journey,” said Sunny Street cofounder Sonia Goodwin. Hub Day will complement the existing weekly

Orange Sky Laundry Service. Hub Day will take place fortnightly on Tuesdays from 9.30am – 1.30pm, at Tait-Duke Community Cottage, Earl Street Tewantin. “It’s not just open to those experiencing homelessness, anyone who is facing barriers to accessing essential services such as visiting the doctor, is more than welcome,” said Community Development Manager, Alison Hamblin.

COOROY RAG Community Centre opens at Kabara

Why is sleep important? SLEEP plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life. Getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help protect your mental health, physical health, quality of life, and safety. The way you feel while you’re awake depends in part on what happens while you’re sleeping. During sleep your body is working to support healthy brain function and maintain your physical health. In children and teens, sleep also helps support growth and development. Sleep helps your brain work properly. While you’re sleeping your brain is preparing for the next day. It’s forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information. Sleep also plays an important role in your physical health. For example, sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. What happens if you don’t get enough sleep? The damage from sleep deficiency can occur in an instant or it can harm you over time. For example, ongoing sleep deficiency can raise your risk for some chronic health problems. It also can affect how well you think, react, work, learn, and get along with others. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Sleep deficiency also increases the risk of obesity. Sleep deficiency results in a higher than normal blood sugar level, which may increase your risk for diabetes. Ongoing sleep deficiency can change the way in which your immune system responds. For example, if you’re sleep deficient you may have trouble fighting common infections. How can I improve my sleep? Medications and herbs from the pharmacy are useful in aiding sleep, but it is important to also

ensure you are practising good sleep principles DAILY to make certain you are giving yourself the best quality sleep possible. Here are some tips for those of you who might be having difficulty in the sleep department. Reduce your caffeine intake - do not have any food, medicines, or drinks that contain caffeine or other stimulants after midday or for six hours before bedtime. Reduce or quit smoking; nicotine is a stimulant. Reduce your alcohol intake or at least avoid alcohol within six hours of bedtime. Do not have a heavy meal just before bedtime Do not do any strenuous exercise within four hours of bedtime (but exercising earlier in the day is helpful). Exercise that involves relaxation or meditation (eg., yoga) may be useful close to bedtime. The bedroom should be a quiet, relaxing place to sleep Earplugs and eye shades may be useful if you are sleeping with a snoring or wakeful partner. Make sure the bedroom is dark with good curtains to stop early morning sunlight. Mood and atmosphere - try to relax and wind down with a routine before going to bed Do not do anything that is mentally demanding within 90 minutes of going to bed, such as studying. Go to bed when sleepy/tired. If you cannot get off to sleep after 20-30 minutes then get up. If you can, go into another room and do something else such as reading or watching TV rather than brooding in bed. Go back to bed when sleepy. You can repeat this as often as necessary until you are asleep. For more information visit your LiveLife Pharmacist at Cooroy or Pomona.

A wonderful full day of Cardmaking was held on Saturday 13th October at Cooroy Primary School Hall. This event was held to raise funds to continue the ‘Footprints Program’ at Sunshine Coast University Hospital. This enables us to supply paper craft materials to make ‘Footprints Cards’ whereby ‘angel babies’ are acknowledged and parents/grandparents are provided with a special footprint memory card. The Footprints program has been in place at Mater Hospital since 2007. The Paper Angels team has implemented this

into several other hospitals throughout Brisbane, Gold and Sunshine Coast. This event was coordinated by Gaye Schrader as part of the Paper Angels team of Independent Stampin’ Up! Demonstrators. Other local demonstrators involved in this event were Barbara Boesten and Jill Potts. Tai Chi introductory course AN introductory Tai Chi class is to commence on October 28 and is to be run over a period of six weeks. Organised by the Australian Tai Chi Academy, the course is designed to be a fun and no-frills introduction to the invigorating nature of low impact and soft exercise essential to the underlying principles of Tai Chi. Classified as a ‘cultural treasure’ by the Chinese people, Tai Chi is an exercise that promotes improved health outcomes through gentle exercise and relaxation. It actively improves oxygen saturation, heart function and join flexibility amongst many other health benefits. Its ‘soft’ approach to exercise makes it ideal for all ages. Furthermore, its emphasis on gentle exercise makes it a valuable tool for cardio and physiological rehabilitation. The Australian Tai Chi and Kung Fu Academy, foundered by Dr Nat Yuen (Cardiologist and Tai Chi Grandmaster) and Grand Master Henry Sue (9th Degree Grandmaster of Southern Style Praying Mantis Kung Fu) has been running regular Tai Chi classes in Australia since the Page 18 - Cooroy Rag, October 24, 2018

1960s. With its headquarters in Brisbane, the school has been instrumental in providing genuine Tai Chi to all Australians. Cooroy classes are to be run by Stephen Locke, qualified instructor and student of Master Sue for over 40 years. The classes are to be held on Sunday mornings at the Cooroy Badminton Centre, between 8.30am and 9.30am. the cost is $50 for the 6 week introductory course. The introduction to the Tai Chi course is designed to be a fun way to improve health and vitaility. The Sunday morning time slot is intended to allow people a chance to experience Tai Chi and still have their valuable weekend time for family or personal commitments. It’s a great way to commence the day and perhaps enjoy all Cooroy has to offer. The venue is set amongst the Cooroy Community gardens with plenty of parking and ample space. To make a booking, contact Stephen Locke on 0409 457 295 or email Stephen.locke5@bigpond.com or Mark Rutherford on 0408 641 323.

IF you have a love for lawn bowls or maybe a really great meal, then make sure you visit Pomona Bowls Club. The greens are about as well regarded as the skills of new chef, Kris Abdy. His menus for lunch and dinner will be sure to attract patrons from far and wide. Pomona Bowls Club has around 80 bowling members and 200 social members, and has been in operation since 1948. It’s a club that is well known for its friendly atmosphere and welcomes both young and old to a sport that grows in popularity each year. One thing the club prides itself on is its connection with the Pomona community. So, it only seems natural that the club’s longterm sponsor is the Pomona Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. After all, it was Pomona residents that decided they wanted their own bank and the community made it happen, opening in April 2015. Since then, more and more locals have

(l-r) Geoff Edwards, Darryl Edmonds and Simone Flavelle from Pomona Community Bank branch joined Judy Muir and Marie Robertson at the club last week

learned the value of good, old fashioned service and have seen the change their banking can make. Club treasurer, Judy Muir met with managers, Simone Flavelle, Darryl Edmonds and Geoff Edwards at the club last week and thanked him for the partnership between the two organisations. “We’re a club very rich in tradition and passionate about our bowls. “We greatly appreciate the support of Bendigo Bank and we’re excited to be sponsored by a bank that is continually giving back to its community. “We’re enjoying our business relationship with Bendigo Bank, too. We know we’re lucky to have our own banking services in Pomona when so many others are continuing to close down all over the country in towns like ours. They’ve stuck by us, so we’re sticking by them,” Judy said. For Simone Flavelle, this year’s sponsorship is the latest step in a great relationship. “We’re continuing to support the community and businesses that support us. As our Pomona branch continues to strengthen, we want to remind locals that the more they bank with us, the more we give back. “In addition to our support of Pomona Bowls Club, we’re proud to support Pomona’s upcoming Centennial Remembrance Day ceremony and are major sponsors of the Pomona King of the Mountain Festival, Noosa Country Show, Pomona State School and more,” Simone said. If you would like any further information about playing or dining at Pomona Bowls Club, call 5485 1202. If you’d like to speak with Simone or any of the team at Pomona Community Bank branch, call 5485 1786.

Match Reports: Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club managed to notch up first round victories in the U15, U13 and U12 age groups, with only one narrow 8 run loss in the other U12 match. U15’s: Cooroy-Eumundi restricted Flinders to 131 with great bowling from Brayden Forrest (4 for 11 off 4), and Lachie Harrison (3 for 13 off 5). In reply, Cooroy-Eumundi were 7 for 153 after their 30 overs, with Ryan Christensen hitting a fine 40, and Oscar Long 34. U13’s: Yandina chose to bat first and posted a strong total of 157 runs. In the field, Eric Mahe stunned the Yandina team and the spectators with a side-on direct hit run out, from the out field. Cooroy’s run chase got off to a shakey start until Marcus Morley and Zac Murray settled in and the runs began to flow. Following this partnership, Gus Gunton (9) and Joe Murray (retired 30 no) combined to get the run chase seriously underway. Marcus (30 no) and Zac (55 no) returned to the crease and remained unbeaten to close out the game for Cooroy with a final total of 5/167. U12 White: took on Tewantin-Noosa Lightning on the St Thomas More School Oval. Openers Reilly Carroll (35) and Angus Hetherington (35 no) got the team off to a flyer, with Nathan Howarth and Jaxon Smith also batting through to retire not out, all contributing to a total of 4 for 141. In reply, tight bowling from Josh Plant (1 for 8 off 5) and some sharp catching behind the stumps by Nathan Howarth, restricted Tewantin-Noosa to 118 all out. U12 Green: hosted Tewantin-Noosa Storm at our new junior ground at Eumundi State School. Batting first, CooroyEumundi were restricted by good bowling to 108 all out. It could have been a lot less without the efforts of Zac Harrison (38) and Clancy Young (29 no), who batted together for the last wicket from the 13th to the 28th over. They both displayed great discipline and patience in achieving a respectable team total. Fine bowling from Clancy Young (3 for 7 off 5) and 2 wickets from Henry Rudkin built pressure, but good batting from Tewantin-Noosa got them home with 7 wickets down. No games were possible in Senior grades due to bad weather.
