New Cooroy Markets a big hit

THE first Cooroy Farmers & Artisans market was a huge success and a real win for our beautiful hinterland town. Thousands of people turned out to see the fantastic variety of local produce, products and artworks. Australian celebrity chef, Matt Golinski was a big hit with the crowds, cooking up vegetables, chicken, beef and fish sourced at the market. Unfortunately due to damage to the market site from recent heavy rain, the 2nd Cooroy Farmers & Artisans Market scheduled for 21 October was cancelled. “It was disappointing to have to cancel our 2nd market but everyone has been very supportive of our decision and we know November 4 is going to be even bigger and better with over 60 stalls booked in and some great local entertainment, said Danielle Taylor, one of the market organisers. November 4 will have even more fantastic produce, food and artisan stalls from around the region plus support from local stars, Phippsy and Jamison Kehl to provide entertainment. Andrew Phipps, or Phippsy as he is more well known, will be cooking up a storm with local produce from 10am to 11am. Former host of shows like Hooked on Water and Getaway, Phippsy is also known as an auMatt Golinski & Danielle Taylor

thor of cook books, chef, fishing expert and most recently for his new Noosa Junction restaurant, ZZ Taps. Fantastic Cooroy musician, Jamison Kehl will be back for her second market performance from 8am. Sixteen-year-old Jamison was one of 10 young women from Queensland to take part in the inaugural Big Sky Girl Mentoring Program this year and has since been performing around the Coast, recently also releasing her first single, Limerence. At each market there is also a stall space donated to a community group to utilise as a fundraiser and/or to raise awareness. There are two community groups for November 4. The first is Christmas in Cooroy with their volunteers selling raffle tickets to raise funds for the fantastic free event they put on in December that has free rides, street parade and more! The second is a fundraiser by Bella, an 8 year old Visionary Wildlife Warrior. Cooroy Farmers & Artisans Markets are on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturdays of each month to support local growers and artists and highlight the diversity of produce and talent in our region. Creamery space Michelle Mann is inspired daily by all that is around her, real and imaginary. She expresses energy and emotion through her paintings giving the viewer an opportunity to enter her fantasy world. The intuitive artworks in the Gold Lotus series are rich in colour and contain powerful messages. Michelle hopes to inspire those who see her work, to step out of their daily life, take a few minutes and see the world from a different view.

Making Light of the Dark Ian Richter Making Light of the Dark is a collection of photographic images that speak to those people who have Depression, for within the images’ reversed state, all darkness becomes light, and colour is reversed. It is hoped by ‘turning it around’, people who suffer from depression and related mental illness can be helped through an awareness and greater understanding of mental illness; people will know there is help out there and that they don’t have to go through it alone. This exhibition provides a unique way for many people to view the world in a new light. Making Light of the Dark is held in conjunction with Queensland Mental Health Week 2017.

No place for coal mines in Noosa Shire State Member for Noosa Glen Elmes MP has written to Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Dr Anthony Lynham and the CEO’s of Coal Stream and Bauple Exploration who have permits to explore Cooran for coal, insisting there is no place and no appetite and absolutely no community support for coal mining anywhere in the Noosa Shire. “While it is impossible to protect the entire community from developments that not everyone may agree with, there would not be a single person, local or tourist, which would support coal mining in this Shire. Noosa is an international destination and one of the most lucrative and successful tourism markets in Queensland – a threat to this pristine environment would be an economic disaster for our community. Having spent many years living in the Bowen Basin, I have experienced first-hand the economic prosperity that comes from mining, both from the resources from which Queensland has benefited greatly, but also from the local economy. While

job creation is one positive aspect of mining, a coal mine in the Noosa Shire would destroy more jobs than it could possibly create. “In my opinion, until such time as renewable energy becomes 100 per cent reliable then there is a place for clean coal. Without clean coal the price of electricity which is already crippling local families will increase further and we will have failed in providing affordable, efficient and reliable energy solutions to the community. “It is essential we get the mix right and the timing right for any changes to our energy supply, but there is no doubting that the coal industry is on notice and must be forced to innovate. “Coal mining in Noosa Shire would be an environmental travesty and while I question the likelihood that any exploration will find coal in extractable quantities – I applaud the Cooran Earth Rights group and in particular Helen Moffitt with whom I have met, for their informative and balanced perspective on energy production, Mr Elmes said.

Bowls Club sold THE Cooroy Sports Hub in Opal Street and the Energex Property in Cooroy has been sold after Ron and Travis McCarthy received a “very attractive offer” from what Ron believes may be a Gympie Syndicate. Mr McCarthy, who has been lobbying Council to allow redevelopment of the sites, said he had been in negotiations with Aldi Supermarket, but a late offer came in from a Syndicate with a very short contract period and the deal was done through a

spokesperson for the Heritage Property Trust. Ron, who has always envisaged Cooroy with an East Side Shopping Village, said the 6500sqm property has a lot of potential. “I believe development of the sites is inevitable and the purchasers obviously saw its value and potential,” said Mr McCarthy. Mr McCarthy said the Bowls Club would continue to operate and leases honoured as the new owners wait for the new town plan.

news Basket Brigade to bring help and hope for Christmas

COOROY RAG SOME aren’t ready to think about it, but for most of us Christmas is a time to spend with loved ones. For many local families affording the basics at Christmas time is almost impossible, let alone any gifts to put under the tree. In 2014, Noosa local Trish Bignall decided it was time to spread a little Christmas cheer to local families by calling on her family & friends to form the Sunshine Coast branch of the Basket Brigade. It’s all built on a simple notion: that one small act of generosity on the part of one caring person can transform the lives of hundreds. The Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade is part of the Magic Moments Foundation - a not for profit organisation doing great work since 1995. In its global form, The Basket Brigade concept has grown from its beginnings in the U.S.A. to provide baskets of food and household items for an estimated two million people annually. This year, it’s hoped more than 300 hampers will be delivered to families in need on the Sunshine

Coast. Always keen for more volunteers, the Basket Brigade Committee is calling people to donate cash, gifts and any free time readers may have to make a difference this Christmas. A call out to local businesses is being made as well, and one keen to support the cause again in 2017 is the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank. Manager, Geoff Edwards was on hand this week to present $500 to the Basket Brigade Committee. “It’s a mammoth task, but made easier with the generosity of donations just like this one from Bendigo Bank. Their generosity to our wider community is well known and we’re delighted to have them on board again this year,” Trish shared. Throughout the year Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade raises funds and collect donations of toys and non-perishable food items. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, they bring all donations together and create food and gift baskets to distribute anonymously to families in need. Each bas-

An age appropriate gift is included for each family member. The baskets are delivered anonymously but they do include a simple note that says “This is from someone who cares. We hope that you

FEDERAL Member for Wide Bay, Llew O’Brien today announced new Coalition Government funding for Men’s Sheds including those at Pomona and Kilkivan to assist men in their communities. “Almost $14,000 will be provided to Men’s Sheds that will support the delivery of new projects to benefit their local communities,” Mr O’Brien said. “I’m pleased to confirm Pomona Men’s Shed has been allocated $4,000 towards the purchase of colorbond sheeting, a concrete floor, access doors, lighting and power installation, and crane hire to move a container, providing safer facilities for the Men’s Shed members. “Kilkivan Men’s Shed will receive $4,842 for the purchase of an air compressor, compound mitre saw, metal cut off saw, combo kit, welder in-

verter, orbital and belt sanders, first aid kit, first aid and safety courses,” Mr O’Brien said. “This funding will be used by members to expand the range of quality products and increase participation in activities that advance the health and well-being of members through health seminars and distribution of health information and resources. “Men’s Sheds strengthen the community by encouraging participation and supporting volunteers. They contribute to the growth and development of other local organisations too by sharing resources with them. They serve an important health and wellbeing role by reducing social isolation and improving mental health, particularly among retired and older men, providing mentors for those facing uncertainty in life and who are looking to acquire new skills.”

can take care of yourself so that one day you may be able to do the same for someone else. “While recipients receive a basket full of food, gifts and a caring message, the volunteers also greatly benefit from their participation. Many volunteers return year after year and bring their family and friends to have an experience of selfless giving at a

time when many of us take for granted all the wonderful things we have in our lives. Unfortunately, there is never a shortage of families in need so if you would like to help out, the Basket Brigade team would love to hear from you. Upgrade to Mary River Bridge and Black Mountain Rd QUITE a bit of work has already been done to improve Black Mountain Road this year and the next stage will be to address two dangerous bends before the existing work continues. There will also be maintenance work done from Eungella Road right through to the dirt section of road including widening the road at the hump near the old Black Mountain school. Replacement of the Mary River Bridge is expected to begin in May next year. The pedestrian crossing over the creek will also be replaced. Speed limit will stay the same after construction is completed but the weight limit will increase. It should take 16 weeks for works to be completed on bridge. Detailed maps of the works can be viewed at Cooroy Hotel - contact Colleen if you’d like to view them.

BOUQUETS & BRICKBATS BRICKBATS to whoever vandalised the park at Erindale Park Estate. A picket was smashed through the rubber protective layer of the park and then the picket was left pointy side up, which is extremely dangerous and could have caused serious injuries to the children playing on the equipment. It's hard to understand why the offenders would destroy a public asset that is only there for the enjoyment of the community. It is estimated to cost several thousands of dollars to fix. BRICKBATS to the person who put threatening flyers aimed at cat owners in letter boxes at Greenwood Grove. The flyer used expletives and a picture of a noose. Not good for the kiddies who checked the letterboxes. Extreme! BRICKBATS to people who let their dogs urinate on anything at all outside local shops. COOROY RAG

Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank IT’S never an easy subject to talk about and we hope we never need it, but I’m regularly in discussion about the life’s unexpected outcomes with our customers. Discussions range from unexpected employment or job security or possible reduced hours. Another is the perceived lack of alternative employment options should they wish or have to change employers or career paths. We tend to insure our home, cars and housing contents. However, we aren’t aware or simply don’t often tend to insure one of our most vital assets - our income. Take Personal Risk Insurance for example. What is it? Personal Risk Insurance comes in a number of forms but essentially it is an insurance policy that is taken out to cover an individual in the event they suffer from a serious illness, an injury or death. This includes Income Protection Insurance, Total and Permanent /Disability Insurance, Trauma Insurance and the most commonly known, Life Insurance. Income Insurance is also becoming more and more important these days. This type of insurance is designed to replace your income if you are unable to work due to illness or injury. Most policies can cover up to 75% of your before tax income and it is paid directly to you the customer. They don’t pay it directly to banks or real-estate agents etc. There is generally a waiting period which means it does not cover people for short term illnesses such as mild cases of the flu or an absenteeism of 2-3 days. More and more people are now being encouraged to look at Income Insurance for a number of reasons, including: • A heavy reliance on two incomes to service bank debts and lifestyle. What happens if one of the incomes suddenly disappears? • Insufficient savings or back-up options

should income cease. • An increase in statistics around likelihood of ill health before the age of 65. • An increase in statistics around serious illness such as cancer, heart disease and stroke. The topic of Income Protection Insurance is a big one. Some people may already have some limited coverage through their employee superannuation. Additionally premiums paid for these policies often can have tax advantages. My advice is to speak with a professional Financial Planner who can listen to your needs and then advise you of your options. Next time, I’ll go into more detail about Trauma Insurance, Total and Permanent Disability Insurance and Life Insurance. If you have any questions about insurance of any kind, please call into the Cooroy or Pomona branch or call us on 5447 7131 or 5485 1786. You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* Arguably, the most common fear holding an investor back from achieving a great return is a misunderstanding of what happens when markets fall (as they invariably do). In order to use fear to our advantage, we would be well served to seek to understand the following three principles around shares and their value: • A share is simply a small slice of company ownership; • A company’s value ultimately depends on its present and future potential cash flows; • Value may not always equal price. Multi-billionaire and world’s most successful investor, Warren Buffett, has defined investment as “the transfer to others of purchasing power now with the reasoned expectation of receiving more purchasing power – after taxes have been paid on nominal gains – in the future. More succinctly, investing is forgoing consumption now in order to have the ability to consume more at a later date.” In other words, it requires patience. Buying a stock (or house, or managed fund) and simply hoping the price goes up soon is, most certainly, not investing. While we may naturally feel emotions based on what the price does over this shorter term, history has shown it is vital not to let these emotions steer our financial decisions. Focus on quality and don’t speculate A share is simply a slice of ownership in a business. For this reason, focus should be directed at the quality of the businesses and their prospects for the future, rather than a chart with a line that wiggles up and down as the price rises and falls. Unfortunately, in the financial media, there is a clear focus on explaining short-term fluctuations in share price. Commentators often try to attribute every little rise and fall to a particular event or issue. The risk is that an investor may start taking their cues from price movements - which is driven by short-term sentiment and emotion, rather than value - which is ultimately driven by the cash flows a business generates now and into the future. Benjamin Graham, often known as the ‘father of value investing’, famously said that “Price is what you pay, value is what you get.” While the price of a share will certainly fluctuate, (sometimes multiple times per second, every day of the year!), the value of a company’s future cash flows is likely to be far less volatile. Speculation; i.e. buying and blindly hop-

ing that a price will go up soon, might be considered the antithesis of investing, and shouldn’t ever be considered a safe strategy. Mark Twain once aptly mused that, “October is one of the most dangerous months to speculate in shares. The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August and February.” If a share price falls sharply, yet the value of the business’s future cash flow doesn’t change, this may provide a wonderful opportunity to purchase further shares at a discounted price, hence maximising the potential return and reducing the potential for loss. A skilled fund manager will take advantage of this by applying this principle to a portfolio of businesses in order to further reduce risk to the investor through diversification. Paradoxically, as an investor, your hope should generally be that prices fall in the short term. Volatility is the friend of the long-term investor. That is not to say asset price volatility doesn’t matter. For example, self-funded retirees being forced into selling units at a temporarily reduced price in order to fund their lifestyle isn’t an attractive proposition. For this reason, financial planners commonly emphasise the importance of maintaining an adequate cash reserve - particularly in retirement. Whether you are invested in a managed fund, direct shares or an investment property, price matters at precisely two times when you buy and when you sell. The return on an investment depends on these prices and the distributions you receive over the investment period. For these reasons, most quality fund managers will tend to remain focused on the fundamental prospects of the underlying companies owned, and think as a business owner rather than a ‘stock picker’. Taking a break from social media is becoming a popular and welcome trend. The benefits of doing so include freeing up time for engaging in ‘real life’. The addictiveness of social media is becoming more talked about and concerning. Year 11 co-ordinator at Noosa District State High School, Brigid Muir, recently sent us this article about her experience after deleting Facebook and Messenger apps from her phone. One of the best things I have done in recent days is delete the Facebook and Messenger apps off my iPhone. The reason for this was to limit the ‘pull’ and control these apps have. I was finding that it was almost impossible to ignore the notifications and updates on Facebook and Messenger with their visual and aural alerts as to a friend liking something or requesting a banal chat. While I am not completing a full social media detox, I felt it was necessary to limit my screen time as I was feeling that my iPhone was controlling me and not as it should be, with the human controlling the device. Social media is addictive by its very nature. We all want to be liked, appreciated and found to be funny, attractive and witty. This is a part of the human condition and how we are all wired. Facebook fuels narcissism and many believe that their thousands of friends or followers represent their popularity and likeability. Unfortunately, this often does not translate into reality. I know that even after an extensive Facebook friend cull, there would probably only be around 15 out of my 390 friends who I would classify as close friends. It’s these friends (namely family) who I could trust to help out if I

was faced with difficulties or dire circumstances. The other 375 I would really only see as associates, who probably wouldn’t drop a thing if I needed help. A profile photo update requires immediate attention from all friends and followers, with many liking, loving and commenting on the attractiveness of the picture within minutes of its posting. Funny stories, anecdotes and rhetorical questions that we would often not waste a person’s time with retelling are shared, commented and reacted to on mass by our friends and followers. Thoughts on politics are dumped into newsfeeds and sometimes controversial topics create arguments that probably wouldn’t be provided with much air time outside of Facebook. Since deleting the Facebook and Messenger apps, I have been more productive in my work and studies. I have had more time to surf, run and exercise and it is liberating not having to tell the world how many minutes or kilometres were spent during my workout. I am sleeping better and feel more energised of a morning. My iPhone battery lasts a lot longer between charges too. It’s nice to be able to make eye contact with people in the street and to sit at a café and people watch, as opposed to posting photos of my food. Eye contact is powerful and in recent days I have noticed that many people have very beautiful eyes, which when gazed into can provide an interesting glimpse into their soul. It makes me sad to think that many miss flirtatious glances as their eyes are firmly fixed, staring at their screens. Perhaps I am becoming more cynical with age, but I think a break from social media would do everyone the world of good.

to the Naot Day, Cooroy Shoes had already stocked their busy Maple Street store with the new Naot range and Assaf was ready to offer his assistance to a shop full of excited customers. Some of the Naot customers were already familiar with the brand and some just discovering Naot, but all excited to be in the draw to win a free pair of Naots and a gift of decadent foot cream. Mosaic workshop SUE Hoskin and Gwen Smithers invite you to take a walk through a forest of tiles, glass, ceramics and paintings at their exhibition at the Cooroy Butter Factory from November 3 to December 5. The two artists met through a local pottery club and share a common love of ceramics and mosaic. Gwen, a garden lover, creates quirky pieces for the garden while Sue, an accomplished mosaic teacher, is not afraid to explore unique approaches to this ancient art. The Cooroy Butter Factory welcomes Sue back as this is where she taught her very first mosaic class in 1998. “Mosaic for me began in 1994, when a friend and I gave it a try, I just fell in love with it from there. Inspired by Architect, Antonio Gaudi and traditional mosaic methods I began my journey,

piece by piece,” said Sue. “In 1995 I started wholesaling to many businesses and sold work on consignment through art galleries in Brisbane, Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. Eumundi Markets was a great start as well, and I did many consignment pieces for clients all over Australia. “I began teaching at the Cooroy Butter factory in 1998, loved the place then and love it still. I have met so many people through my teaching travels and find myself back here again with this exhibition. So glad this beautiful building is still being used.” Sue will also be holding Mosaic workshops with two children’s workshops on Demember 3 and a 2day workshop for adults on November 11 and 12. The race is on! Over 80 Year 10 students competed in the Noosa District State High School CO2 race day. The students worked for a term and a half designing and manufacturing tiny streamline rockets. The day culminated in some students’ cars competing in the state titles held at the Maryborough Technology Challenge. Two students competed in the general shop category against over 90 students from 25 schools across the state. NDSHS students Riley Crawford and Aaron Towle placed 10th and 16th respectively. NDSHS student Jack Bell finished a very creditable sixth in the state challenge, which was good enough to send his car to the national final. Jack’s car did even better at the nationals finishing third overall.

How does mediation work? AS court waiting lists have grown longer over the past decade, and some lawyers’ fees have grown larger, mediation has become increasingly popular as a way of ending disputes. Nationally accredited Cooroy mediator Ms Pamela Sweetapple said mediation was essentially a conversation designed to resolve conflict. It could be used to solve a wide range of disputes, such as commercial and workplace disputes, and community and family matters. During a mediation session, the mediator helps the parties to explore the reasons for their conflict, and to discuss ways of ending it. The solutions that might be imposed by a court are not the only ones that parties can consider during mediation. For example, while a court decision might result in one winner and one loser, mediation allows parties an opportunity to work together and to end conflicts in less harmful and expensive ways than court proceedings.

Ms Sweetapple said that mediation reduced legal costs by settling matters early, and usually ensured a better ongoing relationship between parties. “About 85 per cent of matters that come to mediation settle there,” she said. An early settlement was especially important if people had to continue to work together or to co-parent children. Another advantage of mediation is that conflicts are dealt with privately and not in public, as they are in courts. Ms Sweetapple said that trained mediators could help people to focus on the causes of their conflict and to generate workable solutions that allowed them to get on with their lives. Lawyers who mediate can also offer informed opinions about likely outcomes if matters go to court. “Mediation is nearly always worth a try,” she said. For more information, contact Consensus Mediations at 12 Emerald Street, Cooroy.

WANT a free night out at the Ridgewood Hall head to ‘Rockin RoundThe Ridges’ on 11th November at 7pm That’s right it is free!!! A dance and birthday party for the Naming of the Sunshine Coast 50 years ago generously sponsored by the Noosa Shire Council. So take advantage of this big night out for all. The band for the night will be Glen Albrecht and ”Ricochet”. These boys are self taught and from age 13 they started their own band ”Western Express” in the 80’s. For those of you who were locals in ‘95 – ‘96 their band, then called ”Sunburst”, played at the hall 3 times due to their talent and popularity with the locals. Some of you would remember ”The Webb Brothers” who wrote and sang ”Who Put the Roo in the Stew” and ”The Jockeys are Striking” - hit songs back then. The three Albrecht brothers were part of their band. Our BBQ will be set up on the verandah for anyone to use. But still bring along some money for raffles and a good time. If you or someone you know is having a birthday in November, join in the party and bring your cake. BYO Drinks.

AFTER the excitement of Noosa Orchestra’s August Concerts, Maestro Antoni Bonetti returns to Cooran to present two wonderful pieces in the repertoire along with a medley from “Hairspray”. The first is Mozart’s Harp and Flute Concerto - and who doesn’t love a harp in conversation with a gentle flute? It’s perfection.

The orchestra follows with the powerful and explosive Dvorak 8th Symphony. The orchestration is astounding and the final movement is breathtaking with its trumpet fanfare and violent tempo changes - so come prepared to be thrilled ! Tickets are available at the door or at Eventbrite.com.au Cooran Hall, Sunday 5th November 2.30pm.

Ageing with wisdom & style AS we enter middle-age and beyond, we all aspire to age with wisdom and style. Here are some great tips for doing just that. 1. Be your authentic self: Now is the time to honour your uniqueness. It is also a time to feel comfortable with who you really are, and not feel that you have to conform to how other people expect you to be. 2. Reflect your character and personality through your personal styling: This means choosing clothes to wear that make you feel happy and confident. Say goodbye to being a slave to the latest fashion trends. 3. “Treat yourself” as an acknowledgement of your self worth: If you have had a

lifetime of putting yourself last, of denying yourself all the luxuries of life, now is the time to treat yourself. Maybe it’s with a nice piece of jewellery, a new hairstyle or a whole makeover ... whatever it is, know that you are deserving of such special treatment. 4. Declutter your surroundings: This process is about simplifying, giving a sense of lightness and freedom, so you don’t feel so weighed down. So whether it’s dealing with a wardrobe full of unwearable clothes, a living room full of knick knacks that are just dust collectors, or a kitchen full of old pots and pans, make a commitment to do it. You will find it so worth the effort. 5. Let go of unhelpful thoughts: What good is entertaining such thoughts as “I’m not good enough” or “I’m not attractive enough.” These thoughts only serve to diminish you. Instead

choose thoughts that are going to lift you up and make you feel self-assured and happy. 6. Connect with community in a positive way: Whether it’s through a social, sporting, spiritual, cultural or business/ work network or whether it’s through your contribution to charitable causes, being with people of similar values imbues a sense of shared connection. Ageing is not about retreating from community, but being a positive role model and light for others. Many more valuable insights on Ageing with Wisdom and Style will be discovered at an upcoming workshop for women at the Cooroy Library on Saturday 11 November 10am1.30pm. Workshop guides are Deb, a Louise Hay Heal Your Life Coach & Cat a Personal Stylist. For full details and bookings phone 0436 104 237 or email insideoutsidegreat@gmail.com

Do I need physio after a cortisone injection? AS physiotherapists, we see a number of clients who have been referred to have a cortisone injection. Usually this is for bursitis, but can also be used for other inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. Common areas where cortisone injections are used for bursitis are the shoulders and hips. Some people have had physiotherapy prior to the injection but some clients we eventually see have not had physiotherapy either pre injection or post injection and present after the injection has not relieved symptoms in the long term. In most situations, physiotherapy could be an option before injection for ailments involving bursitis, unless there is significant pain and trouble sleeping. After the injection, there is a period of relative rest necessary until the therapy can begin. Physiotherapy is an extremely important step in recovery after cortisone injection. The cortisone is a strong antiinflammatory which often reduces pain levels, but in most cases fails to address the cause of the bursitis. There may be muscle imbalances, biomechanical dysfunction or movement pattern disorders that have contributed to the develop-

ment of bursitis in the first case and must be addressed to prevent future recurrence requiring subsequent injections. A physiotherapist has extensive training in the assessment and management of movement disorders, biomechanics and muscle activation patterns. They will assess the function of the muscles and joints around the affected area and devise a personalised treatment and rehabilitation program. You do not need a doctors referral to see a physiotherapist in private practice and we are able to claim your private health insurance rebates for you directly. In the event that an assessment reveals excessive inflammation, your physiotherapist will advise a review with your doctor to determine if a guided injection is required before further physiotherapy treatment. If you would like to discuss your condition with a physiotherapist or book an appointment to begin your rehabilitation journey, call the highly skilled team at Hinteractive Physio on 5442 5556 or visit our website (www.hinteractivephysio.com.au) for more information. We can also be found on Facebook and Instagram (hinteractivephysio).

What does low GI really mean? YOU probably hear a lot about eating “low GI foods” ... but what does that actually mean? Firstly, what are carbohydrates? Carbohydrates are a large group of compounds (including sugars, starch and cellulose) that when broken down, produce energy for the body. However, not all carbohydrate foods are created equal, in fact they behave quite differently in our bodies. The glycemic index or GI describes this difference by ranking carbohydrates according to their effect on our blood glucose levels. Choosing low GI carbs (or “complex carbohydrates”) - the ones that produce only small fluctuations in our blood glucose and insulin levels - is the secret to long-term health, reducing your risk of heart disease and diabetes. It is also a key fac-

Page 14 - Cooroy Rag, October 25, 2017

tor in maintaining a sustainable healthy weight range. Eating a lot of high GI foods can be detrimental to your health because it pushes your body to extremes. This is especially true if you are overweight and sedentary. Switching to eating mainly low GI carbs that slowly trickle glucose into your blood stream keeps your energy levels balanced and means you will feel fuller for longer between meals. Examples of Low GI foods: Breakfast cereals based on oat, barley & bran; Basmati rice; Sweet potato; Wholegrain/rye bread; Fresh fruit; Lentils; Baked Beans. Examples of High GI foods: Lollies and chocolate; Canned fruit in syrup; White Bread. The staff at your local LiveLife pharmacy can help answer your questions on diabetes!

Sandplay for therapy Lorraine Marryatt is a local qualified and experienced Pomona Therapist and is now introducing Sandplay into her range of Counselling options. Sandplay therapy brings to the surface the issues the subconscious wants to express and heal, it wastes no words getting straight to the heart of the matter. It has been a successful method of therapy for over 70 years in England and 50 years in Switzerland, it has only recently been introduced to Australia, USA and Japan. Lorraine’s first experience with Sandplay Therapy was when it was recommended to her children after a traumatic incident. She noticed how quickly her children improved, even after 1 session. “My children went on to have 3 sessions and I had 2, I then realised just how powerful this therapy was, so I went on to study the Therapy obtaining my certificate to compliment my Diploma in Counselling,” said Lorraine. Sandplay Therapy uses a sand tray and figurines, which become symbols for the subconscious allowing it to “speak”. The client is en-

couraged to choose figurines from the shelves that they are drawn to and place them in the tray of sand. The therapist then asks the clients about the sand tray world they have created. Clarity is achieved as hurts and feelings are given expression through the symbols and healing begins. “In my counselling I use several techniques for example REALITY / CHOICE therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy, (CBT) and solution focussed brief therapy, but I love Sandplay Therapy because it gets to the root of the problem quickly. Often the problem we think we have is not the issue, people are often surprised after a therapy session what the underlying issue really is,” said Lorraine. If you are interested in a session of Sandplay Therapy with Lorraine for yourself or a member of your family, or if you have found that traditional counselling methods failed to solve your problems, Contact Lorraine Marryatt at Sandplay Therapy on 5485 2635 / 0439 763 934 or email l.marryatt@hotmail.com or visit the Facebook Page - Sandplay Therapy. Sessions cost $50 per hour.

Supporting people with dementia NOOSACARE is hitting the local neighbourhood trail with a Dementia Friendly Business campaign. Their mission is to educate businesses on dementia and provide them with some simple solutions on how they can best support people living with dementia. Sandra Gilbert Group Care Manager & Dementia Living Coach at NoosaCare says there have been some other small projects across Australia, however our dream and my personal mission is to educate as many Noosa Businesses over the next twelve months so we can truly claim Noosa as a Dementia Friendly Community. On the 11th of August Sandra gave NoosaCare’s inaugural training session to the staff

and volunteers at Carramar Op Shop. For over 34 years the Op Shop has been a huge contributor with all funds raised going back into Noosacare’s Carramar & Kabara sites. The training session was so well received that even customers stopped to listen in and validated how important this training was to our community. Globally there is a dementia crisis and no family is immune from having a member develop this illness. And it’s difficult, but there are resources. We as a community need to rally around to provide more resources and understanding for families when they are in the public. For Dementia Business Training please contact Sandra Gilbert at Noosacare on 5449 8799

to all our valued shoppers

for your patience over the past few weeks while we develop the New Store Layout. Just to let you know the Bread and Bakery Department will share an aisle with the Tea & Coffee from this week. We still have to install some new refrigeration for our New Cheese Barge and to make room for some exciting new prepared meals. The Grocery aisles now run from Food items all together to Non Food items all together. We endeavour to make shopping more practical and easier. Once again a BIG THANKYOU to our customers and apologies for any inconvenience occurred during your shopping experience.
