Debbie Gallagher's 1980 Holden Sandman

All roads will lead to Cooroy on Sunday 20th October as the Combined Coastal Car Club hosts their annual Car Show. Almost 200 vehicles are expected to be on display at the event which welcomes all makes and models of cars and machinery. Passionate enthusiasts like Shirley Wilde will be buffing and polishing their cars in preparation for the Show and Shine. Shirley and her impeccable 1976 Leyland Mini Van (top left) were last year’s winners of the Best Van trophy which is just one of the almost 40 categories up for judging in the Show and Shine. Shirley is an accomplished mechanic who was hands-on in the restoration of her Mini, including the difficult task of fitting a radiator in a mini engine bay. Shirley’s Mini outscored Sue Chapman’s prized 1971 HQ Holden and Debbie Gallagher’s 1980 Holden Sandman and in the battle for the Best Van category. The enthusiasm for special interest vehicles is increasing with club memberships and car show partici-

pation growing across all ages and genders. The 2018 Cooroy Car Show saw the largest rise in entries from young and female enthusiasts since the Show started in 1995. The Cooroy Car Show is a great family day with trade stands, food and drinks, Entrants’ Lucky Draw, jumping castle, line dancing, and demonstrations by the dedicated volunteers at the Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade.

Reforms in aged care in recent years has meant the system has become complex and could even be confusing. Throw in that it is a highly emotive topic and it means it is an area that is in-demand for quality financial advice. With a Royal Commission into aged care announced in 2018 we expect to see more changes and more demand for services, advice and options, so here are some things to consider if you are looking at care for yourself or a loved one either at home or at a local aged care facility. Did you know? There are about 1.3 million people in Australia who access aged care (Aged Care Roadmap, Australian Government, March 2016). Aged care is not just for the elderly. Usually it is the children or grandchildren that are

forced to look into aged care when the need becomes desperate, and by that time it is often too late to properly consider and plan for the best outcome. Whilst this may not affect you directly or impact you right now – sometimes a crisis can occur, which may involve you or a loved one being unable to return home. Whether considering options for yourself or deciding how best to help someone close to you, aged care is a complex area requiring careful thought. There is much uncertainty surrounding this issue: • whether you can remain in your own home, • which facility you may have to move into, and whether it is close to loved ones, • how much it will cost, and where the money will come from.

Trail Walk re-scheduled ganic Local - Or Spanish Greenback

HOW TOMATOES USED TO TASTE! 4 Memorial Ave Pomona ph: 5485 1922

The fires on the Sunshine Coast, together with the forecast weather conditions for October, have forced organisers to postpone the Great Noosa Trail Walk scheduled for the long weekend in October this year. The walk is planned to be rescheduled to the long weekend from the 2nd to the 4th of May next year. The State Emergency Service (SES), the National Trust (Qld) and local fire services have endorsed our decision to defer the walk until it is cooler and the risk of bushfires has passed. The good news is that the National Trust (Qld), which is a valued sponsor of the Great Noosa Trail Walk, has agreed to honour its agreement to provide membership of the National Trust to everyone who registered for the walk in October. For further information, refunds or to rebook for next year please email gntw@cooroyfuturegroup.com.au

This process can not only be overwhelming and stressful, but it can also have a significant emotional and financial impact on your loved ones. The earlier you think about aged care, the more in control you are, and the better outcome you can hope for. When it comes to Aged Care the following issues require consideration: • Whether you are still quite independent, but want access to help around you if required, belonging to a community • Whether you can access help in your own home instead of moving into an Aged Care facility • How to fund the initial accommodation payment (lump sum, daily payment or combination) and ongoing costs of aged care if you do have to go into a facility

• Maximising Centrelink entitlements • Minimising aged care means – tested fees • Showing the benefits of tax offsets • Deciding whether to keep the family home or rent/sell the family home • Reviewing other relevant strategies and Estate implications As a professional financial adviser specialising in aged care, Tracey takes pride in working with her clients over time to consider their whole financial plan, a part of which is aged care. “By working together, we build a better relationship, one based on trust and understanding, and this helps our clients get peace of mind that they have someone looking out for their financial future and lifestyle”. Kess Prior, winner of the major prize

That was certainly the case at the drawing of the Noosa Open Studios Art Union at the Cooroy Hotel when Kess Prior’s ticket was pulled out as the winner of the major prize, a trip for two to the Margaret River Region Open Studios in Western Australia, very generously donated by Hinternoosa Real Estate in Cooroy. Ulrich Sherry was the lucky winner of the much sought after prize trip for two to the Museum of Old and New Art, on the River Derwent in Hobart, Tasmania. Third prize went to well known Cooroy identity, Carol Watkins who will get to enjoy a weekend for two, courtesy of the Sofitel in Noosa Heads, including dinner at the Beach House Restaurant. Last, but by no means least of the major prize winners were Jane and Richard Holmes who will have the pleasure of immersing themselves

in the amazing collection of art by Vincent Fantauzzo, during a weekend stay the Art Series Hotel, of the same name, at the Howard Smith Wharves in Brisbane. In addition to the above, 15 other winners will get to enjoy dinner for two at the increasingly popular Cooroy Hotel Drive Thru. According to President, Chris Bell, the response to their first art union exceeded all expectations although it really wasn’t surprising, given the high quality of the prizes on offer. As a result, he believes that this will be a regular part of future fundraising for Noosa Open Studios as it encourages all the participating artists and galleries to get involved and make a start on the hosting of next year’s event. A full list of the sponsors and the winners can be seen at noosaopenstudios.com.au

BEGINNERS TO ADVANCED THEORY & PRACTICAL

10 Fantail Cresent Cooroy

Christmas in Cooroy is celebrating 15 years and it is going to be bigger and better than ever. One of the new additions, is the King & Queen of Christmas in Cooroy! This is a fundraising pageant and the male and female that raise the most funds for Christmas in Cooroy will be crowned the King & Queen of the festival. The fun doesn’t stop there of course, after being crowned and cloaked, the King & Queen take pride of place on the King & Queen float in the Bendigo Bank Street Parade. But the other participants, don’t miss out. They become the royal courtiers and accompany the newly crowned royalty on the float. “Thousands of dollars are raised each year by our volunteers and the volunteers on the organising committee thought that this was a great way to help with fundraising while also encouraging volunteer par-

ticipation and a bit of healthy competition as well,” said event manager, Danielle Taylor. You can raise funds in any way you like as long as it is legal. When you register you will receive an official fundraising pack to help you get started. There are lots of new surprise additions to the festival this year and we have some fantastic sponsors on board to help support the event, but there is also a significant amount of fundraising needed each year to keep this the fabulous free event that it has evolved to. The theme for the Bendigo Bank Street Parade is a ‘Moment In Time’ and this could be your moment in the spotlight to remember for all time! If you are interested in participating in the King & Queen of Christmas in Cooroy, email advertising@cooroy.com.au for an info pack or jump onto the website at www.christmasincooroy.com.au for more information!

FRESH SUMMER VIBES!

The end of an era Museum, with most of these years also spent serving as president of the Cooroora Historical Society. This was a full-time volunteer role and one which she approached with commitment and professionalism on behalf of her local community. A quiet achiever, Jeanette was involved in many areas of the local community over many years. Some may remember her playing the piano accordion for the Cooran Singers, while others will remember her early contribution to the development of the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre. For those of us who worked with her, she was always the sparky little lady with a twinkle in her eye and a kind word for everyone. While kind, she was also firm and not one to let others suffer injustice. A memorial service will be held 10am, Saturday 12th October, 2019, at the Pomona Memorial Hall.

Those who own a business think about ways of improving and strengthening their business every day. You probably don’t think about how it might cope without you, or indeed how you might cope without it. But just like every other sort of insurance, business risk protection is something you need to think about and plan for in case of future need. Try considering the 3Ds – determine value, decide strategy, document agreement. Determine the value of your business • How much is the business worth? • Is the value based on an agreed formula, dollar value or an independent assessment? Decide who should be left with what after the departure of a business party • Who takes ownership of the business? • What are the family’s needs and expectations? • What are the business’s needs and expectations? • What is the family’s ongoing role in the management of the business? • What is involved in the day-to-day management of the business? Document the agreement • A solicitor can help business owners set up a Buy/Sell Agreement to document how an outgoing proprietor’s business interest will be transferred to the continuing proprietor(s) upon a trigger event. Insurance is one of many solutions, so speak to a specialist to help you determine whether it’s the most appropriate and cost-effective option for your business protection needs. When is a good time to shop for business risk insurance? If you are sitting on the fence or think you’ll get around to it some day, take a minute and ask yourself the following questions? • What would happen to your business if you

were sick or injured? • Will your current insurances, including those within super funds, be enough to pay-off your debts (eg. loan repayments) and keep your family comfortable for the rest of their lives? • What is the cost to your business if you talked to a specialist about putting in place the required strategy and funding to protect you, your family and the business? If you would like to discuss your business and this type of insurance, please don’t hesitate to contact me and I can arrange an obligation free consultation with one of Bendigo Bank’s specialists along with some great, local customer service. Just call into Cooroy or Pomona Community Bank branches or email me at simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au. Oh, to be under 8!

(l-r) Bendigo Bank's Piggy with Jodie Brampton and Bertie were all smiles on the day

Cooran State School was filled with fun and laughter during their annual Under-8s Day celebration on September 13. The event was held to celebrate all that’s great about being under the

age of eight. The many stalls created awareness of the services, businesses, activities and organisations within our hinterland community involving children and support for their families.

Celebrate

It showcased what they had to offer the kids and the wider community in an educational and fun-filled morning. It also marked the 63rd year of Under 8’s Week in Queensland, this year celebrating the culture and diversity in our community. Locally, the Pomona Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank got involved as an extension of the great and long-standing relationship they have with the school. Customer Relationship Officer, Jo Winter was there with mascot, Piggy talking with parents, and sharing with the kids whilst handling out magnets, Piggy banks, backtags and bookmarks. It was just one the events where parents, grandparents and carers of Cooran State School students joined in with the activities during the morning. A variety of art stalls and community services were also represented. What a day!

news Katie Rose Cottage resumes service after attracting long term government funding

MP Sandy Bolton with Katie Rose Cottage Hospice Chairperson, Carol Raye outside the Doonan premises Last week, Katie Rose Cottage Hospice (KRCH) Chairperson, Carol Raye, in conjunction with the Hon. Member for Noosa MP, Sandy Bolton, announced that the highly regarded 24/7 hospice service will be recommencing on the October 14, 2019. The accredited ‘end of life’ service based in Doonan had temporarily suspended its 24/7 services in July, pending the outcome of ongoing funding negotiations with the State Government. The KRCH nursing and care teams provide incredibly professional ‘end of life’ care honouring the individual and working to fulfil the patients every need. The three bed facility, owned by the charity is set on 3 acres of beautifully established gardens. Ms Bolton was instrumental in helping KRCH succeed in attracting a 3-year part funding agreement with the State Government. Ms Raye said that Ms Bolton had helped enormously by lobbying the Minister for Health, Steven Miles MP, encouraging them to work with KRCH by providing the

3-year funding package, similar to that received by other hospices in Queensland. “We are ecstatic that we will be recommencing services and thank Sandy for her tireless work. Getting the ear of government amongst many other competing demands is not easy. Passion and perseverance by Sandy and our Hospice team has led to this outcome,” said Ms Raye. Ms Bolton said she was proud to have been able to help secure long term funding for such a wonderful community service. She also thanked the Minister for Health, Stephen Miles who had committed to working with KRCH, long term, to ensure the best practice end of life care was available to all residing on the Sunshine Coast, and further afield. On behalf of Katie Rose Cottage Hospice, Ms Raye thanked Ms Bolton for her tireless work and support for KRCH and also thanks the Minister for Health and the Queensland Government.

trucks have blind spots . RYDA is an all-day out of school excursion. The students are divided up into small groups and there are 6 sessions of 30 minutes, these session are delivered by qualified Facilitators This program is offered FREE to all students and is made possible by the generous assistance given by the Queensland Government and other sponsors. COOROY RAG

The country girl with a big heart People with Purpose in Our Community Deborah Daybell has worked at Cooroy’s Lifeline charity shop for 22 years and organised the popular annual Denim and Country Sale for 13 years. That’s a long haul and yet, amazingly, she remains as helpful and good-natured as ever. So, what keeps her going? What fuels her enthusiasm? Her answer is straightforward and honest. “I just like it when people get a really good deal,” she says. “Like when they pick up a brand new R.M. Williams shirt (which usually retail at over $100) for only $25!” Deborah’s friendly, giving spirit may have a lot to do with where she comes from. She grew up in Mount Isa, where her mum worked at a drug rehabilitation centre, and she definitely still feels a strong connection to country districts and people. This, she explains, is a major reason why she wanted to create a sale that dealt specifically in good quality country clothing – which is often pricey in the shops. She says she is constantly amazed at the quality of some of the clothing that is donated to them. “Just the other day, a woman walked in with four pairs of brand new Wranglers,” she says. With this kind of quality, it’s no wonder the sale did so well this year, with shoppers coming from as far afield as Brisbane and Bundaberg. They made $71,000 in total ($41,000 on the first day) and didn’t have much stock left over at the end. Deborah says it helped a lot that they were able to use the refurbished Cooroy Memorial Hall again which meant that everything was more spacious and organised. Not surprisingly, Deborah helped raise funds for the Hall refurbishment by holding a Mega Raffle. With the help of her other Lifeline volunteers, they sold $4,000 worth of tickets

outside the front of the IGA – and this amount was then matched by Council. Preparations for next year’s sale are already well underway with 80 cartons of clothing collected already, including good quality leather jackets, boots, bags, belts, Driza-Bone, etc. Once again it will take place in May (7th, 8th and 9th), backing onto the Fusion Festival. Last year, Deborah got students from NDHS involved (upcycling denim) and they will be back next year, doing something different. Meanwhile, there is still plenty of life in the Lifeline shop which celebrated 25 years in Cooroy last year. Over the years, Deborah has overseen a large expansion in the premises, as well as surviving a fire which burnt down the butchery next door. She has also witnessed a lot of change in the town and remembers toddlers coming into the shop who are now going to uni! Like all charity shops, Lifeline relies on donations. They have two bins in the carpark opposite the Cooroy Library or people can drop items at the shop. Lifeline also offers a helpful service in which they drop a bin off at your house. You can fill it at your leisure and then they will collect it when you’re ready. All the money from the Lifeline shop and the Denim and Country Sale goes to Lifeline’s Suicide Prevention Line (13 11 14), helping to support the counselling centre. Deborah emphasises that she couldn’t do any of this work without all the amazing volunteers that give their time so generously. Lifeline is always on the lookout for more volunteers so anyone interested should pop into the shop, where they will be assured of a warm and friendly, country welcome.

Melony Brests and Sall Monalla A fantastic fun-filled night of food, fabulous floor shows, funky Bingo games and fancy prizes, will give you a chance to help our desperate Sunshine Coast Koalas who have been doing it very tough lately. Just a couple of years ago, photographer and koala rescuer Bernard Jean could name 11 koalas within the Noosa National Park. A month ago, he reported he could only find three. Since then recent bush fires added to the extreme drought conditions, while more development requiring the destruction of vital food trees saw increasingly more koalas killed by vehicles recently as they vainly struggle to find trees, including healthy breeding females and their joeys, several being rescued sick and transported to veterinary treatment, some too ill to save and yet another female mauled to death by a loose dog on Tewantin Golf course with her badly injured joey now in a volunteer carer’s hands.

Surgery aims to reduce stigma around mental health issues

One in five Australians aged 16-85 experience a mental illness in any year with the most common mental illnesses being depression, anxiety and substance use disorder. Over half of these people do not seek any treatment options which is vital in dealing with mental illness. There are now many affordable options available to sufferers, it’s important to know them all and seek assistance as soon as possible. • Every day at least 8 Australians die from suicide and a further thirty people will attempt to take their own life. That’s 65,000 attempts and 3000 deaths every year. • Males account for 75% of all suicides and are unfortunately the least likely to seek help. • Suicide is the leading cause of death for young people aged 25-44, more so than car accidents. Maple Street Surgery will be holding an afternoon tea on Thursday 10th October at the Cooroy RSL 2-4.30pm (gold coin donation) to not only help raise awareness

about mental health and wellness, but also aims to reduce the stigma and promote helpseeking for the people of our community. This event is anyone interested in finding out more about mental illness, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, pre-natal depression, mood disorders, suicide and self-harm, post-traumatic stress disorder and wellness, including family and friends. Black Dog Institute staff, Eden Mental Health Nurses, Psychologists, and our dedicated Registered Nurse Lilly and other staff from Maple Street Surgery will be there to discuss causes, signs and symptoms of mental illness, advise when and where to seek help and offer support and guidance that will assist our community develop practical strategies for helping a friend or family member suffering from depression or anxiety. So, come on down and have a cuppa and a chat and grab some information that will be easily available. Remember, you are not alone.

health Warning signs for a faulty “ticker” When experiencing the symptoms of heart attack, it is important to understand they may not always be sudden or severe and may vary widely from person-to-person. You may have just one of these symptoms … you may experience them all. They may come on suddenly or develop more slowly over a period of time. It is important to call 000 if you experience any of the following. You can never be too careful with your heart! Some of the more common signs include: • Discomfort/pain in the centre of the chest. This often feels like a heaviness or tightness and may spread to the arms, shoulders, neck, jaw or back. • Shortness of breath • Nausea and cold sweats • Dizziness/light-headedness • Generally feeling “unwell” or “not quite right” People often confuse the term “heart attack” (as above) with “cardiac arrest.” A sudden cardiac ar-

rest is caused by the heart malfunctioning and then stopping beating unexpectedly. It is triggered by an electrical malfunction in the heart, causing the heartbeat to become irregular. In comparison, a heart attack, as described above, occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked, preventing oxygen-rich blood from reaching a section of the heart. If this blockage cannot be reopened quickly, then parts of the heart begin to “die.” You may ask how these 2 conditions are linked? When a sudden cardiac arrest occurs, it is often caused by a heart attack as it disrupts the heart rhythm and therefore increase the risk of sending the heart into “arrest”. LiveLife Pharmacies have taken an interest in your heart-health and have invested to ensure there is a defibrillator machine available at ALL of their pharmacy locations. Just another way they are helping you to LiveLife well and happy!

Mithing a tooth? Wattle Street Dental in Cooroy is currently offering a free Dental Implant consultation (worth $350). Dr Wei Shen, also known as the gentle Dentist, realises how important it is to have your missing teeth replaced and says that her patients have discovered the secret to feeling great again with dental implants. “Dental implants are the most comfortable, permanent and naturallooking way to fix missing teeth allowing patients to eat, laugh and smile with confidence,” says Dr Wei. Getting dental implants also: • Restores your smile • Increases selfesteem • Functions just like a natural tooth Not many people realise how important it is to get missing teeth replaced. There are cosmetic problems as well as functional problems. If it is a front tooth, this missing tooth has an obvious effect to a person’s smile and

confidence. What about a tooth that is missing at the back of the mouth? Some of the problem with missing teeth are: • Super-erupting of opposing teeth (teeth moving up or down into the space created from the missing tooth) • Compromised and lopsided chewing patterns which can lead to TM joint problems • Drifting of adjacent teeth into the space of the missing tooth • Higher risk of

cavities and periodontal disease in areas where food gets trapped • Loss of bone height in the area where the tooth was extracted • Problems to surrounding teeth due to increased incidence of cheek biting, tongue biting and ulcers. Have questions or want to book a consultation this week? The next step is to give Wattle Street Dental a call at 5447 7669, or drop in to 1/13 Garnet St, Cooroy.

What can the people of Cooroy do to help? Look out for the Moths, turn off all unnecessary lighting and record the Moth ( with photo) on the Vic Zoos’ survey page. Bogong Moths migrate every year about this time, from SE Qld to the Victorian Alps. Two years ago there were 4. 4 billion Moths. The past two years none have been seen in the Victorian Alps. The bogong Moth is the favourite food of Australia’s only hibernating marsupial, the tiny pygmy-possum. The little possum once woke up surrounded by thousands of his favourite food, the bogong Moth. Now nothing. Without the Moths the pygmy-possum is critically endangered. Possum numbers down to 2,000 The Moth navigates his migration by using the earth’s magnetic field and visual markers but the artificial lights are a trap and distraction It is thought that if all unnecessary lighting is turned off ( even look at reducing the strong lights to a softer mood) this will help to stop trapping ( killing) the Moths. (Birds and koalas cannot sleep near the excessive lighting that is taking over) Vic Zoos have a page on the internet where you can photo and record the time, date and location if you find a Bogong Moth. It’s early days yet. I have recorded two Moths at Sunshine Beach. Please, all environmentalists at Cooroy and surrounds, join in. Patricia Balderstone

Pink Ribbon breakfast at Saw & Mill This October you can help stop deaths from breast cancer by simply getting together with your friends, family and colleagues to raise funds for game-changing breast cancer research. The Cooroy Pink Ribbon Breakfast cohosted by SPM Law and Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland will be held at Saw & Mill on Friday 25 October at 8am. Tickets available for $20 at www.trybooking.com/ 555157<http://www.trybooking.com/555157> Now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, the incidence of breast cancer continues to grow. A staggering one in eight Australians will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. This equates to 50 women facing a diagnosis each and every day in Australia. Every day, eight women will lose their lives to breast cancer. Every year, 3,128 women and 28 men will lose their lives to breast cancer. In the 25 years since The National Breast Cancer Foundation’s inception, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer has increased from 76% to 90%. Ultimately, NBCF is working towards a goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. The guest speaker for the breakfast will be Dr Jonathan Beesley from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. Dr Jonathan has been a member of the Cancer Genetics Laboratory at QIMR Berghofer for 15 years. He has a background in molecular biology laboratories and now carries out computer-based research. Jonathan has a key role in the international Breast Cancer Association Consortium, with a major focus on using genomic data to identify potential cancer risk genes. His main re-

search interests revolve around applying computational methods to help understand the mechanisms governing normal regulation of these genes and how things can go wrong leading to cancer. The gorgeous Naomi Smith, a breast cancer survivor will also speak of her journey. Naomi Smith has more than twenty five years sales & leadership experience within the Corporate, Financial and SME Business sectors. Having been diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2018, Naomi has taken time out to undertake a series of treatments including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation on her journey to wellness. This journey has been a head, heart and soul sabbatical which has led Naomi to a new level of spiritual and emotional connection - bringing unexpected gifts & growth throughout the challenges. The breakfast will be a relaxed, fun morning and thanks to many wonderful local businesses there will be raffle with lots prizes. Thank you to all the local businesses that have supported the event so far by donating their time and products including Mr Jay Balloons, Closet Confidential, Serge’s Pizza & Pasta Pomona, Spill de beans, This Bird, Liquor legends Cooroy, Live Life Pharmacy - Cooroy, Ikatan Day Spa, Trail 518,Studio 24,Cooroy Newsagency, Elegant Beauty & Brows, Wright Cut Meats, Cooroy Country Menswear & Jeanery, Mulberry Café, Galah Home, Cooroy Barbers, Sunshine Mitre 10, Tyrepower Noosaville.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is yet another strong reminder to all Australian women they should put their health andwell-being first. Early detection remains the best chance of survival. It is important women of all ages self-check their breasts, and women aged 50 to 74 years take up BreastScreen Australia’s invitation of a free screening. Many women are still not participating in the free screening program, although it could save their lives. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Australian women apart from non-melanoma skin cancer. As a result of the huge strides we have made in

diagnosing breast cancer early and in treatment, more than nine out of 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia will survive. There are known risk factors for breast cancer, and while some such as family history are not modifiable, some are. Every woman should learn about these to understand her own risk. Information is available on the Cancer Australia’s website: https:// breastcancerriskfactors.gov.au. The Breast Screen van will be in Opal Street, Cooroy, on October 21 until November 7. Call 132 050 to book an appointment.

Vivid vision Optometrist Jenny with patient Jan The world’s most sophisticated virtual reality vision improvement system has recently arrived in Cooroy at our local optometry practice, optometry@cooroy. Principal Optometrist Jenny Currie says “We are so excited to now be able to offer Vivid Vision. It is the most exciting and powerful optometry development to hit our shores. It is an immersive and therapeutic tool that uses virtual reality headsets and sophisticated software to treat lazy eye (amblyopia), turned eye (strabismus) and all sorts of other binocular vision disturbances. I have been treating amblyopia and strabismus for more than 30 years and I am confident that Vivid Vision will truly be a game-changer.” Designed to motivate both children and adult patients and improve their visual skills through games and tests that are fun and intuitive. As they play their way through the various virtual reality scenarios the behavioural optometrists can monitor and control every aspect of the patients’ experience live while manipulating their vision system to correct visual dysfunctions.

“There has been a long held belief that if amblyopia wasn’t corrected before a critical age, usually around 8, then, well too bad. “We know now from latest research that adults well past the critical age can be treated due to brain plasticity (the ability of the brain to change of reorganise) so treatment later in life isn’t out of the question” says Jenny. Vivid reports over 95% success rate from patients treated. Exciting new research released in late April this year from British Columbia reported how 34 amblyopic patients aged 3 – 69 years who had been unsuccessful with traditional patching treatment gained an average improvement of visual acuity for the amblyopic eye of 1.5 lines after 8 weeks of treatment. The optometrists at optometry@cooroy are looking forward to partnering with their binocularly-challenged patients in their 3D journey. optometry@cooroy can be found at 62 Maple Street. Call them on 5442 5555 to arrange an appointment.

The Kindness Club is proud to share a project we’ve been working on for quite some time. We have written and illustrated a story book! The Kindness Club brainstormed ideas together before Wendy and Kyla (10 years) put the ideas into words. “Bear and Mouse: A Kindness Story” is a story about kindness bringing together the most unlikely of friends. The children of The Kindness Club then contributed their special touches to the illustrations to help bring the story to life.

Copies of our book have been printed for Cooroy’s childcare centres, kindergarten, doctors waiting rooms, and for our town and school libraries. A colourful and entertaining way of sharing our kindness message with our little community members! We only hope the children enjoy reading our book as much as we enjoyed creating it! For more information about The Kindness Club or our book please email Wendy at thekindnessclub@outlook.com

COOROY RAG Patches of Cooroy

Patches of Cooroy held their annual Quilt Show on August 30-31 with the event raising $3000 which was shared between Katie Rose Cottage, Smart Pups Assistance Dogs, Sunshine Butterflies, and Riding for the Disabled as well as the Sandra Jones Centre. The quilt in the background was one of the group’s original friendship quilts with a block made by each member. Patches of Cooroy began in the CWA Hall in September 1999 with 11 ladies joining on that first day. The aim of the group was to foster friendships and share our knowledge and sewing experience, to learn Patchwork and Quilting, help each other and be there for each other for whatever challenges life deals us. Twenty years on and the group has 59 members and on any Tuesday be-

tween 30 and 40 ladies meet in the CWA Hall. It has been said the sound of chatter heard outside the hall is happy noise. Our members’ skills have grown in many areas. Very basic quilts to exquisite art quilts, excellent knitters and crocheters to amazing and delicate embroidered items. Some days, stitching is the priority other days, it’s the chatting that soothes the soul.

COOROY RAG Ray White hosts annual muster

The Team of Ray White Rural Ray White & Rural Livestock has hosted its annual muster, grabbing the attention of almost 200 of Australia’s real estate agents. The one-day conference was held at the Gold Coast, featuring economists, industry thoughtleaders, elite agents and entrepreneurs as speakers. Speaking at the event, keynote speaker and former Wallabies captain Stephen Moore discussed sovereign risk and political uncertainty worldwide affecting the industry. “It’s been dry and it’s continuing to stay dry but we are optimistic that it will break. It’s happened before and it will happen again,” he said, before talking about the rise of “alternative meat products”. “A lot of people think it’s a fad but we are seeing more supermarket shelves being stocked with plant based meats. Mr Moore said the key to getting people to work in remote communities was for organisations to care about its people. “You will always attract people to rural and remote and regional Australia if you are known as kind and good to your staff,” he said. Also speaking at the event, REA Group chief economist Nerida Conisbee said while many areas of Australia were affected by drought, many mining towns were seeing big improvements. “The worst of the property market was January, when there was very little to be positive about but it all drastically turned around in May after the election,” she said. “Chinese buyer activity is at its lowest level ever

in residential housing but not in rural where there’s still a lot of interest. “Agricultural and mining demand underpin the rural market - just have a think about the fall in demand for sugar cane now compared to the increase in demand for almonds. “Trade wars can be a big benefit to many rural areas, along with improvements in transport and employment to a region. “Look at Tamworth where prices are up more than 20 per cent in the last 12 months, while Townsville has experienced the toughest market in Queensland where prices are down 20 per cent since 2009. The western outback of WA is also down by 35 per cent, and it’s also tough in Perth. “We are starting to see positive conditions for example in Mackay prices are up 2.4 per cent, and nine per cent higher growth in rents in the last 12 months. Mining towns are back especially in Blackwater and Dysart.” Ray White Rural & Livestock chairman Paul White said he was so very proud of the network’s success over its 25 year history. “It’s good for my heart and soul to see you all. A lot of people who work for public companies don’t get such a connection with their network but this is what our family does and we have done for 25 years ago,” Mr White said. “Marketing is our philosophy at Ray White. We were marketing mad, and marketing your name through marketing property is the best way to get your name out and people notice you,” he said. That’s why, for our 25th anniversary, we’re focused on looking forward.

Holiday or Home? School Holiday time inevitably means people leave their home base and travel to the Sunshine Coast to experience all it has to offer. I have recently met some people who have loved their holiday choice so much they have been tempted to relocate here permanently. And why not! It is one of Australia’s most desirable places to live. Also, it is an exciting time for the Sunshine Coast, because It is undergoing an economic transformation. The largest health precinct in Australia is located here with the $1.8billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital providing thousands of jobs and career opportunities. The Sunshine Coast is home to over 300,000 people and is to increase to just under 500,000 by 2036 - this could be you! One of the reasons people want to relocate is to find the perfect balance between work and lifestyle. The Sunshine Coast has a reputation for having a laid-back culture and when researching for a new home everyone operates on the distance calculator of ‘how far from the beach?’ And fortunately, up here nowhere is far from the beach! Eumundi is a hinterland town that offers a thriving art and live-music scene. It also hosts the famous Eumundi markets and offers a friendly village-like community. There are also two primary schools in Eumundi, and to get into this school precinct is sought-after. Ray White Rural has two offices at both Dayboro and Eumundi which offers maximum exposure for properties from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast. Another great attraction is when compared with other major Australian cities, the Sunshine Coast has competitive house prices and a below average median house rental ($460/week). I recently had a couple in our office who had a 10-year plan to relocate to the Sunshine Coast and wanted to take

advantage of buying now and renting out for a few years. I love being able to assist these people by having the local knowledge to guide their journey. If Eumundi is on your radar to investigate for relocation, we have a great home set on 2.5 acres, only minutes from town. It comes complete with swimming pool and parklike gardens and trees which offer plenty of room for the kids to play. It is located within the local Eumundi school precinct and offers close access to both Noosa and the highway for access further south and onto Brisbane. Another area that offers great access to Noosa beaches and the highway for easy transit to the southern end of the coast or Brisbane is Tinbeerwah. This area is known to the locals as the Golden Triangle situated between Tewantin, Cooroy and Doonan. Here you will find prestige properties set on small fertile acreage blocks, with some properties on the edge of the escarpment that enjoy panoramic views sweeping from Noosa Heads to Coolum. Located just 15 minutes from the beach it offers peace and tranquillity yet so close to beach access. We are fortunate to have listed another property with a family home at Tinbeerwah complete with swimming pool and nearly 6 acres perfectly set up for a young family with a horse or two. It is located on a quiet sealed street and is located near the Noosa horse riding trail network. We are located right across from the Eumundi markets and welcome you to pop in for a chat or give me a call anytime. If any of these properties interest you please let me know as I would love to arrange an inspection. Rita Malone Local Property Consultant Ray White Rural Eumundi

Celebrating 25 year the Ray White Rural network came together on the Gold Coast for their annual Rural & Regional Summit & Awards Night. Offices from across Australia come together at the Gold Coast for the annual award & Rural & Regional Summit. A huge congratulation goes to our principal, Vicki Pain for being awarded number 10 principal for 2018/2019. Vicki’s dedication to her clients over the past 15 years has truly paid off. “Proud as punch to take out the number 10 principal for the Rural Network across the Australian network. I love helping people find the home of their dreams. Consistently achieving record sales prices for our sellers. Lots of element fill our day. This being said, achieving this award it doesn’t all happen without my dedicated staff. No phone call, appointment, appraisal, open home, marketing campaign and we have had quite a few of them over the years and more recently the success of our Ray White Rural & Rural Lifestyle Property Runs. The success of our Eumundi office connects our lifestyle buyers from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast.” A proud family business with three generations. Contact one of our family or staff to list your property and be part of our next Rural Lifestyle Property Run.

Lake MacDonald Fresh Water Fishing Club The Lake Macdonald fishing club has been busy of late with local fishing comps and their annual Bunnings BBQ. The club’s fishing comp is very close this year for club champion, with only 2 fishing dates left to finish off the year. 1st place to date is Paul Fleming 155 points, 2nd Russell Manning 154 points, 3rd Gary Kenzler 150 points & 4th Wayne Stall 120 points. There’s been an average of 18 members turning out for fishing days with a BBQ to finish off the mornings. The last fishing day will be the Toby Brown interclub comp. This is in memory of club founder and a truly wonderful man. Toby could not have guessed the club he helped form 29 years ago would still be going with some of the first members still wetting a line. To fish our local impoundments you need a fishing licence. You can get them on line or from your local Post Office. If you are a senior or pensioner don’t forget to ask for a discount. No outboard motors on Lake Macdonald but electric, paddle, or sail is fine, or get onto one of the 2 jetties and fish the sunset. If using baits (live shrimp) very light floats with a smallish hook around 2 metres down. Soft plastics work well and surface lures on sunset or sunrise good to get the Saratoga biting. The club has worked with the DPI, stocking groups, Council and other state Government

bodies over the years on restocking, research, Mary River Cod breeding, infrastructure in and around the lake and advice on what fish species to introduce to fresh water impoundments. New fisheries regulations started 1 September 2019. A fact sheet is available with more information available online at www.daf.gov. au/business-priorities/fisheries. Club meetings are at the Saw & Mill the last Thursday of every month. Some of the members have dinner first at 6 pm and our meeting from 7pm till 8pm. Visitors or anyone with a interest in joining our club welcome to come along. Thank you to Bunnings for their ongoing support over the years with fundraising.

Clean sweep for Impact boxers Riley Whitestyles

Paige Robinson

Impact Boxing Academy had a clean sweep at the recent Queensland State Titles with 5 out of 5 Boxers walking away with Gold medals. Another outstanding performance from the club. Riley Whitestyles and Paige Robinson were just two of the standouts. Both these boxers stepped up a weight division and came home with solid wins. At just 14 years of age Paige was having her 22nd fight to claim her 3rd consecutive State title. Riley 16yrs was having his 60th bout to claim his 4th State Title. Keana Welsh, Erin Carter and Adam Carr also walked away with Gold. All five boxers will now represent Queensland at the Australian Titles held on the Gold Coast from October 22nd - 25th. Riley and Keana have also been invited to a Futures program training camp at the AIS in Canberra as part of a select squad from all over Australia. The Impact crew will now also turn their focus to the Annual “Young Guns” tournament to be held at the Noosa District High School on October 19. This year’s tournament has a real ANZAC theme to it as New Zealand will be sending a team over to compete. Team Impact made up part of a Queensland representative team that travelled to NZ in July to win the ANZAC Series cup. The kiwis have promised that they are coming to collect the cup and take it back across the ditch.
