Spot the Scarecrow!

Hans and Claudia, created by the Price family, follow the tradition of round bale scarecrows Have you heard the one about the Scarecrow who didn’t eat? He was already stuffed! Jokes aside, now that spring is here, there’s going to be influx of straw creatures around the hills of the Mary Valley, South-East Queensland, all vying for a cash prize in the annual Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival. Scarecrows came out of hiding on September 9, and will guard farm gates and village shops until the judges award the Grand Champions their prize money at the Harvest BBQ on October 4, at Yabba Creek Parkland, Imbil from 5pm.

The Scarecrow Festival is great fodder for ‘crow spotting, the fun game for visitors who travel country roads looking for straw creatures, arty sculptures and other creations honoring the tradition of building scarecrows. There will be a Google map to lead you down country roads to discover new places. You can find scarecrows from Conondale and Kenilworth through the Sunshine Coast hinterland north to Dagun, near Gympie. It’s a great excuse to pack a picnic and tour through Mary Valley Country!

The locals will tell you that it’s all about the fun. A few ‘crows have a distinct purpose in life, carrying on as their forebears did, protecting crops by scaring away the birds, but others are just there to dress up the paddocks and maybe even share the wry humour of the country folk who live in the valley. It’s how they deal with the seasons of country life – flood, drought and everything in between. Plan your self-drive tour through the beautiful Mary Valley and spot the Scarecrows! Don’t miss the 30th annual Cooroora Woodworkers Show petition, schools and people’s choice. The fierce but friendly competitions will decide the best exhibits in woodturning, carving, marquetry, toy-making, pyrography, wood art and general woodworking. Cash prizes and goods are on offer to the winning entries, generously donated by Cooroy businesses. There are also plenty of activities to watch, with demonstrations throughout both days of woodturning, boxmaking, carving and other woodworking crafts. Club members are on hand to answer questions and provide woodworking advice. Visitors can also see logs being milled into slabs of timber which are available for purchase along with pre-milled timber of several varieties. Many of the exhibits are on sale, plus wooden toys, show bags and ready-to-build wooden kits. A large number of private stall holders also join in our Show, with craft items and woodworking items on sale.

The Cooroora Woodworkers Club will be holding its 30th annual Woodcraft Show in the Cooroy Memorial Hall on Friday and Saturday, September 20 and 21. The Woodcraft Show allows club members to show their skills to the general public and share with them the joy of woodworking. Visitors are always delighted by the beauty of natural wood, especially when it has been hand-crafted into an attractive or functional object. The Show features displays of work by club members and woodworkers from other clubs, as well as works produced by talented local school students. The event also includes competitions between regional woodworking clubs as well as the Cooroora Woodworkers internal com-

An unassuming nature belies an incredible skill within Aileen McPhee. The stalwart of the Cooroora Woodworkers’ Club is capable of exquisite, intricately-carved work in many artforms. Aileen’s work will be among many of her club colleagues’ on display at the Woodcraft Show. It is people like Eileen who help make the club the vibrant community organisation that it remains today after more than 30 years. “The club is made up of many different ages, up to

88, and great people, and it is a pleasure to either make something or just have morning tea and listen to the many stories members have to tell,” says Eileen. “Learning is a very important part of the club either by just listening or by practical demonstrations. There is a lot of woodworking knowledge and always readily available if needed. The club offers some structured workshops but mostly people make their own items with encouragement from others.” Aileen sought out the club

almost 10 years ago, wanting to find someone to teach carving. “I had a picture frame that was carved on two corners and I needed to reproduce another one,” she recalled. “But I fell in love with this form of woodwork and have found it was a great way of giving something hand-made for birthday and Christmas presents, so it became my new hobby. I find beauty in nature so most of my carvings are of flowers or leaves.” Variety of opportunity is what Aileen values in the club. “There is always something new to learn. I have (done) cabinet making, learnt pyrography, tried my hand at box making and scroll saw, and now am being taught woodturning by one of our life-time members and master in this field.” Aileen has seen an increase in younger folk joining the club, as well as more women, “which is great, and encouraging. They bring new and fresh ideas.” “There will be some remarkable pieces on show, it never ceases to amaze me what some people can make,” she said.

news Mayor praised for climate change commitment

COOROY RAG Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington has been honoured for his work on climate change at the national Cities Power Partnership Awards in Sydney. Cr Wellington received the Climate Ambassador Award in recognition of his leadership driving climate change action and emissions reduction in Noosa Shire and further afield. Cr Wellington said he is humbled and honoured to be recognised as a leader on climate change. “It was extremely humbling and quite surprising to be regarded as an Ambassador on climate change, but this is an award I share with my fellow Councillors, and also the staff at Noosa Council,” he said. “Everyone at council has been unanimous in their support for our actions and advocacy on this essential issue.” Cr Wellington said. “I’m so very fortunate to be surrounded by people who understand that we have to be courageous in the face of what the CEO of BHP recently called an “existential crisis” facing humankind.” While in Sydney, Cr Wel-

lington had the chance to spend some brief time with his grandchildren, who live there, reinforcing why action on climate change is about their future on the planet. “Local governments are at the coal face when it comes to dealing with climate change and its consequences. We need to lead by example and the weight of evidence is so clear and keeps mounting. “If we don’t take action now, the costs of inaction are definitely going to be borne by residents and ratepayers everywhere.” “This is not being alarmist. Too many people focus discussions on sea level rise, where the greatest threat posed by climate change is what we’re collectively doing to the weather and the massive repercussions if global average temperatures rise above 1.5 degrees.” Cr Wellington lamented. Noosa Council has an ambitious plan to have net zero emissions by 2026 and recently became the first local government in Queensland to declare a “Climate Emergency”.

David Craven, director of Cities Power Partnership applauded Mayor Wellington on his commitment, passion and consistent approach to climate change. “Tony shone in a competitive field of entrants and was an early champion of climate change and hasn’t wavered since,” he said. The Cities Power Partnership includes 110 local governments across the nation, representing 12 million Australians. Cr Wellington’s main contender for the award was the President – equivalent to a mayor – of Margaret River Shire, Pam Townsend. “Pam is doing terrific things on the opposite side of the country and perhaps together, we can form a pincer movement from the east and west in the battle to tackle climate change.” Noosa Council was also a finalist for its Zero Net Emission (ZEN) by 2026 initiative in the Renewable Energy Achievement Award, which was won by the Act Government for its emissions reduction projects.

Clean-up bill hits $15,000 after more asbestos dumped The bill to clean up asbestos dumped on the roadside during the kerbside rubbish collection is set to hit $15,000 following the discovery of three more piles. Council’s Waste Coordinator Ian Florence says it’s been a disappointing end to the annual kerbside rubbish collection. “These are acts of illegal dumping that have put members of the public at risk and so far cost ratepayers at least $15,000 in removal and clean-up costs,” he said. Specialist asbestos contractors removed around a tonne of asbestos each from Bakers Road, Jampot Creek Road and Falls Creek Road. “Combined with the asbestos removed last week from Western Branch Road, it’s in excess of four tonnes of hazardous material dumped beside the road,” Mr Florence said. “It’s illegal dumping - asbestos is not, nor has it ever been, accepted as part of the kerbside bulk rubbish collection. Asbestos removal and disposal is a specialised field as exposure to asbestos fibres poses

serious health risks.” Mr Florence said illegal dumping was a serious offence, particularly in the case of hazardous material. “As soon as we’re made aware of dumped asbestos, we inspect and secure each site with warning tape and signage,” Mr Florence said. “An asbestos removal contractor is called in to remove the material under the guidance of an independent hygienist. “The asbestos material is then sent to Council’s landfill facility and the dump site thoroughly decontaminated, with a clearance certificate provided by the hygienist.” Mr Florence said Council was investigating each recent incident and hoped to prosecute. “The culprits should expect to cop a fine, which may be in excess of $130,000 if the matter is prosecuted,” he said. “Anyone dumping asbestos on the street is putting members of the public at risk and we take that very seriously.”

The first Kenilworth Show was staged on November 25, 1919. It heralded the beginning of a new era for the district. The “War to end all wars” had been won and although 8 of the sons of the district had not returned – 21 others were welcomed home. The district had survived the onslaught of two bouts of Spanish Flu in that year and had weathered the drought conditions. The community combined to give the population some event to enjoy after the tough times. The committee cleared leased land, built facilities and were rewarded with 300 people attending and a full complement of entries in all sections. A century later the 2019 Kenilworth Show and Rodeo continues in the tradition of the first show, providing an event for the community to enjoy. On the program for the 2019 Show and Rodeo on Saturday September 21, is Show Jumping beginning at 8am, Show horse events at 8.30 a.m. in two rings in the main arena. Kids go wild on Spring holidays Spring School Holidays are approaching and with them comes an opportunity for local children to engage in nature play and learning at the Natureweavers Forest School Holiday Program. Natureweavers Forest School has been working with children in wildspace since 2010. Based in Black Mountain, Natureweavers children gather for a weekly earth school program, made up of mostly pre-- school and homeschooled children. However, the school holidays mean that all children can come along and re-- wild! “Holidays are one of my favourite times of the year at Natureweavers,” says Carly Garner, lead

mentor at Natureweavers. “Children who are inside, seated and quiet for most of their day at school, come to our holiday programs and can go on epic forest adventures, light real fires, forage for local wildfoods, build cubbies and forts, climb tall trees. It is such a pleasure to see them playing outside, learning in, with and from nature.” The Natureweavers Spring Holiday program is on from Monday 23 September through to Friday 4 October in Black Mountain. I have enjoyed a particularly busy diary over the past few weeks with Parliament sitting twice in three weeks (writing this this column from Townsville), Committee travel in between, and a busy schedule of community group meetings and events in the Nicklin Electorate. A big thank you to the organising committees and volunteers involved in some stand-out local events delivered recently – Eumundi School of Rock, Yandina Street Fair and Retro Rocks in Nambour. I know how hard you have all worked to makes these events a success and I was delighted to attend and to be able to provide sponsorship support. Community Groups wanting to host events are welcome to borrow my 3 x 3 marquees and also my portable microphone and speaker – just book the items through my office. Congratulations to the latest recipients of the Nicklin Heroes Awards: • AerialCatz - Yandina based Aerialcatz – a team of around 70 local students who have been training hard to deliver their

first public performance on 14 th September (follow them on Facebook). • Millan Power a year 6 student at Nambour Christian College who is an all-rounder when it comes to his sport and is achieving really great things. • Woombye Care who are working on a project to assist residents who have compromised mobility. • Sunshine Linus whose 120 members need support to continue doing the great work they do making quilts for our local hospitals and aged care facilities. It is mobile office time again. Please watch my Facebook page or contact my office (5406 4100) for details of locations and times in the week commencing 23 September.

It’s never an easy subject to talk about and we hope we never need it, but I’m regularly in discussion about the life’s unexpected outcomes with our customers. Discussions range from unexpected employment or job security or possible reduced hours. Another is the perceived lack of alternative employment options should they wish or have to change employers or career paths. We tend to insure our home, cars and housing contents. However, we aren’t aware or simply don’t often tend to insure one of our most vital assets - our income. Take Personal Risk Insurance for example. What is it? Personal Risk Insurance comes in a number of forms but essentially it is an insurance policy that is taken out to cover an individual in the event they suffer from a serious illness, an injury or death. This includes Income Protection Insurance, Total and Permanent /Disability Insurance, Trauma Insurance and the most commonly known, Life Insurance. Income Insurance is also becoming more and more important these days. This type of insurance is designed to replace your income if you are unable to work due to illness or injury. Most policies can cover up to 75% of your before-tax income and it is paid directly to you the customer. They don’t pay it directly to banks or real-estate agents etc. There is generally a waiting period which means it does not cover people for short term illnesses such as mild cases of the flu or an absenteeism of 2-3 days. More and more people are now being encouraged to look at Income Insurance for a number of reasons, including: • A heavy reliance on two incomes to service bank debts and lifestyle. What happens if one of the incomes suddenly disappears? • Insufficient savings or back-up options should income cease.

• An increase in statistics around likelihood of ill health before the age of 65. • An increase in statistics around serious illness such as cancer, heart disease and stroke. The topic of Income Protection Insurance is a big one. Some people may already have some limited coverage through their employee superannuation. Additionally, premiums paid for these policies often can have tax advantages. My advice is to speak with a professional Financial Planner who can listen to your needs and then advise you of your options. In my next column, I’ll go into more detail about Trauma Insurance, Total and Permanent Disability Insurance and Life Insurance. If you have any questions about insurance of any kind, please call into the Cooroy or Pomona branch or call us on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona). Huge success - Noosa Botanic Gardens plant fair If the huge attendance at the Father’s Day Plant Fair at the Noosa Botanic Gardens is anything to go by, there is going to be a whole lot of gardening going on around the Noosa Shire region this week. The beautiful Spring sunshine brought the families out in huge numbers to enjoy Father’s Day in the picturesque Botanic Gardens on the banks of Lake Macdonald. And it appears they didn’t go home empty handed either with many a departing car’s back seat and boot filled with plants. Jill Brownlee, President of the Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends said the Plant Fair was ‘a wonderful community event attracting each year more and more younger families with children to enjoy the Gardens.’ Many attendees new to gardening really appreciated the specialized staff holders spending time to provide advice. Noosa and District Landcare had big sales of their Boronia Keysii plants (Noosa’s floral emblem) which only earlier this year they were able to gain accreditation to propagate this endangered species. “Estimated attendance was around 3000 plus and the new Creativity Zone established by the Noosa Arts & Crafts Association attracted enthusiastic young people who particularly enjoyed working with clay, doing eco dyeing and learning how to stitch, knit, crochet and draw botanical related items” said Jill. Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends wish to thank all locals who bought from their Propagation Shed and are already busy restocking in preparation for their next big plant sale on Saturday 30 November. Net proceeds from the Plant Fair are redirected back to supporting the Noosa Botanic Gardens. If you’d like to become involved, check out how via their website: noosabotanicgardensfriends.com or via Facebook.

Sheila Jaenke (Nee McCaul) Sheila was born at Ramsay near Toowoomba, the fourth child of Jeremiah and Sarah McCaul and had two brothers and five sisters. During her childhood she had to help with the usual household chores and also in her father’s cheese factory. The family had to walk three miles, across creeks and paddocks to get to and from school every day. Her career as a teacher began when she completed school in Toowoomba, and she went on to teach at many schools throughout south east Queensland. Her hobbies in her younger life were playing tennis and she was an A-Grade player, knitting, cooking and sewing and making her own clothes including her wedding dress. Her favourite pastime was dancing, and it was at a dance at Windera that she met George William Jaenke and they married in October 1950. Together they farmed at various properties until in 1959 they purchased a small farm at West Cooroy. They had seven sons prior to moving to Cooroy and it was then that three daughters arrived followed by son number eight. Eleven children, what an achievement. Imagine cooking, sewing, cleaning, washing for 11 children. She passed on her vast knowledge to her children as they grew up and later to her grandchildren. On the farm they grew beans and peas and when retirement came, Sheila had time to enjoy her beautiful gardens, her exquisite craft work and reading to fill her days. The farm was sold, and they moved to Maple Street in Cooroy in 1988. Here Sheila tended her gardens, attended craft and church groups and enjoyed time with the grandchildren. They had time to travel and visit family and friends. Sadly, Sheila’s husband passed away in 2007. Sheila remained in her home and kept busy with her knitting for various charities, reading, gardening and travelling with family. Sheila’s family, her faith and her friends were very important in her life. She was a wonderful cook and her baking was delicious.

2/7/1925 – 6/8/2019

After a fracture in 2017, Sheila moved to live with her daughter at Wamuran until a few months ago when she entered Arcare in Caboolture, where she filled her days reading as she was no longer able to do her much-loved craft work. She never complained or grumbled when life and mobility became difficult. In July this year she celebrated her 94th birthday with her daughters and heard from many family and friends. Peacefully, Sheila passed away on August 6 at Arcare and is now at peace and in God’s care. She is survived by her youngest sister, her 11 children and their partners, 17 of her 18 grandchildren and their partners and her 7 great grandchildren. She was a much-loved Mother, Mother-in-law, Grandma, Great Grandma, Sister, Aunty and friend and will be missed by those who shared her life.

Pete Velenski - Plan bee

CWA Variety Fair

People with Purpose in Our Community Pete Velenski’s involvement with native bees (also known as stingless bees, bush bees or sugarbag bees) goes back more than 20 years. Back then, Pete had a land clearing business and would often come across hives in hollow trees and logs. “We started to relocate them,” says Pete. “Otherwise they would be turned into mulch which wouldn’t be good.” Not good at all, especially considering the important role these bees play in our eco-system with the rapid decline in pollinators becoming a real problem around the world. To date, Pete estimates he has rescued and relocated well over a hundred native beehives. Considering that each hive usually houses between 3,000 and 7,000 bees (and sometimes more), that is a lot of potential pollinators! Pete retired from land clearing some time ago but his bee work is still going strong. These days other land clearers call him when they come across hives and he goes out and rescues them.

“We have to get to them quick,” he says, “before parasites get in and destroy the hive.” The bees are relocated to a variety of locations – often to farms as they are very popular with farmers, especially those farming macadamias, blueberries, mangoes, avocados, lychees and strawberries. Macadamia farmers are especially keen because native bees are small enough to get right down into the flowers (unlike the bigger honey bee) and this can lead to improved harvests and bigger fruits. Pete also places hives on people’s properties, including many around Cooroy, Pomona and further afield. A lot of people think these bees prefer native vegetation, but they actually thrive even more (and produce more honey) in areas near urban gardens because of the flowering plants all year round. Native bees play an important role in pollinating both native and exotic plants, including a lot of vegetables and herbs. Pete also has a number of hives at his place in the suburbs of Cooroy, including many still in their origi-

nal logs and stumps – one of which he rescued when Cudgerie Estate was being cleared some 18 or so years ago. He is also very involved in the propagation of native bees and builds high quality “bee boxes” which the bees clearly thrive in. Pete warns that there are a lot of cheap boxes out there which he refers to as “bee coffins” for good reason. He recommends that people should only buy boxes if there are bees supplied with them. Pete has spent a lot of time perfecting his boxes which he builds in his impressively equipped workshop. To create ideal conditions for the bees there are a lot of factors to consider. For example, his boxes have thick walls (made from long-lasting cypress pine) so that they are well insulated (like being inside a log). The ideal temperature for the bees is between 18 and 37°C, hence the reason native bees only occur naturally in the warmer, wetter areas of Australia. “If the temperature is not right the bees remain dormant,” Pete explains. He also supplies poly-

styrene covers to prevent the boxes from getting too hot. Pete’s boxes consist of three sections that come apart. This enables the owner to remove a section (when the hive is full) and use it to start a new hive. When Pete sells a box it comes with the bottom section “choc-ablock” with the comb, bees, brood, etc. The boxes also have a place on top to attach a container to collect the honey, but this only happens when all three sections are full. A typical native beehive will only produce approximately 1kg of honey a year, which probably explains why it can cost up to $400 a kilo! Generally called “sugarbag honey”, the taste is unique and delectable. Look out for Pete at events like Cooroy Fusion, the Gympie Show and the Cooroy Landscape open day and anyone interested in the propagation of native bees can contact Pete on 0422 878 992. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more knowledgeable, beefriendly man.

Letter to the editor In reply to Kathryn Hood, August 28, 2019, the increased numbers of Indian Mynas is unfortunately also being experienced in Eumundi, and many other areas of the Sunshine Coast. The Indian Myna population can explode in a very short time due to the fact that each pair can breed three times a year laying up to four eggs per clutch. Furthermore, they are not migratory, so they just move in, settle in and take over. A number of residents are already assisting the Sunshine Coast Council with their control program by trapping this inva-

An ‘A’ for achievement for Noosa District Noosa District State High School (NDSHS) achieved great success in cultural, leadership, sporting and academic pursuits this semester. The Athena Project, NDSHS’s girl-based Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program was launched. This project involves 13 outstanding girls in Year 9 and 10 and engaged them in two days of mentorship and masterclasses with leading female STEM ambassadors at the Peregian Digital Hub. The Year 9 and 10 female students involved in the Athena Project attended an exclusive visit to both Parliament House to meet with Hon. Minister Kate Jones, and to the University of Queensland (UQ) to engage with nano technology/ robotics scientists. NDSHS Senior Secondary Deputy Principal Renee Rackley said that she was very proud of the Athena Project students conduct and involvement in the opportunities afforded to them. “As always, we are incredibly proud of our students and strive to provide rich STEM experiences to ensure our girls are at the

cutting edge of the industry,” Ms Rackley said. NDSHS attained excellence in sport with the mountain bike team achieving great success at the National High Schools Championships. Fourteen male students from Year 7 to Year 12 competed with the best in Australia country in three separate styles of mountain biking over three days. The school did exceptionally well to place ninth overall and a third consecutive top ten finish, with almost 400 riders attending from 89 schools. This result was made even more remarkable given that most other schools in the top ten had teams of 18 to 22 riders and older riders. NDSHS mountain bike coordinator Andrew Mahony congratulated the NDSHS mountain bikers on their triumphant return to the school. Sporting success for the school was also had at the regional athletics trails for track and field held at the University of the Sunshine Coast on August 29 and 30, with a number of students now representing NDSHS at the state finals held in Cairns.

Excellence was also achieved with the NDSHS Opti-Minds Year 10 team traveling to Brisbane to compete at the State Championships recently, taking out first placing. This NDSHS team was subsequently recognised for demonstrating the Spirit of Opti-Minds for brilliant teamwork. The school’s Year 7 and 8 team took home the honours award, which was a great achievement as this was the team’s first time in the competition. The NDSHS Cattle Show Team also returned to the school with prizes after attending the Mary Valley Show at Imbil last Saturday. The school’s Cattle Show Team took out a plethora of first, second and third prizes to reinforce the agricultural talents at the school. NDSHS Agricultural Science teacher Kerryn Foley said the students handled the cattle expertly in the young handler’s class 1525 year old division. “Our students placed in three of the top four positions – a huge congratulations to our students and staff and we look forward to demonstrating our strengths further at the

Noosa Show,” Ms Foley said. The NDSHS Bi-annual Creative Showcase was held last week. A large, enthusiastic audience was entertained by a vast array of student talent and skill, ranging from aerial gymnastics, contemporary ballet, freestyle hiphop and live music. The school was lucky enough to have former student and local talent Emma Thomlinson and Peter Koppes from The Church perform the classic Australian song Under the Milky Way. Certificate II in Creative Industries – Live Production students managed and coordinated the night’s audio and visual elements, creating the perfect environment for an incredible show. Head of Performing Arts Alison Rexa said that she was impressed by the extra-curricular opportunities offered at NDSHS. “The ways in which students participate in the range of activities on offer at the school, always demonstrating great passion and gusto, makes for a vibrant, engaging and exciting place for our students to develop and grow,” Ms Rackley said.

dining & entertainment Free Park Sounds at Dick Caplick Park

The Rumbrellas Grab your picnic rug on Sunday September 15 from 2pm - 5pm and head to Dick Caplick Park in Eumundi for ‘Park Sounds’ - a fabulous afternoon of free live music. The line-up will see Renny Field, Tobe Robinson and The Rumbrellas take to the stage! The Rumbrellas are an explosion of funk, soul, reggae and hip hop, featuring members of festival favourites The Toothfaeries,

Jambezi, Houseprouds and The Barleyshakes. Spearheading the Rumbrellas’ sound is lyricist/guitarist Ryan Giles, whose passion for creating and performing dancebased music shines through in everything he does. Ryan is the sharp focal point to a new sound of groove-heavy beats, infectious melodies, coupled with intelligent, positive and conscious songcraft.

Ryan, Sparky and Jay Ray’s live performance experience is undeniable, and the one style and sound they truly love is the feel and groove of old school hip hop. Having formed as the Rumbrellas, they found the muse that would hit them like a freight train, and within a very short space of time, have written more than 25 new tracks. Capturing the spirit of 80s and early 90s dance and hip hop, they found they had

single-handedly created a new sound. Fans of De La Soul, Arrested Development, Beastie Boys, Tone Loc, Sublime, Fugees and A Tribe Called Quest will feel right at home with the Rumbrellas. Soulful. Engaging. Enigmatic. That’s Toby Robinson. Toby’s music brings the room to life. After two decades performing on the international stage, Toby has cemented his reputation as

one of Australia’s leading indie/ folk pop artists, playing alongside Missy Higgins, Jen Cloher, Archie Roach, Fanny Lumsden and Toni Childs. Known for his exceptional breadth, craftsmanship and songwriting ability, Toby and his music are loved by the radio community. Every single he’s released has been added to ABC network Australiawide and played on Triple J and Double J, and his latest single ‘When The Sun Come Up Again’ sat at #1 for more than a month on the AMRAP charts last year. Toby has toured for the past three years, living on the road and building audiences around Australia, including performances at Woodford Folk Festival, Tamworth Country Music Festival, and Mullumbimby Music Festival, as well as organising drought relief concerts in towns throughout Western Queensland. Renny Field has played concert stages, street corners, living rooms, island resorts, country pubs, op shops and more. His performances are the sum total of all these experiences - of how they have shaped him as a musician,

of where they have brought him as a person. A way of bridging the gap between the things that define us as individuals and the common ground that we all share. Drawing heavily on the folk influences of artists he has toured and performed with over the years, his music veers from rambling

dialogues to deep explorations of the heart and soul, the stories interwoven through a pop sensibility that remains constant through shifting musical landscapes. An exploration of the space where art meets life and vice versa. N.B. This is an alcoholfree event.

Bronwyn looks after birds and possums and occasionally cares for gliders. She has also taken care of bandicoots (she told Maddie the little bandicoots are so cute!) Healthy Sleep Solutions is Australia’s premier facilitator of home-based sleep studies, CPAP treatment introductions and ongoing management of sleep apnoea patients Assessment for sleep apnoea can be undertaken in the convenience of your own home with a simple diagnostic test which is Medicare approved for qualifying patients, no waiting lists and fast turnaround of results. All sleep studies are reported on by accredited independent Specialist Sleep Physicians with concise management recommendations provided for all patients and their referring Doctors. Ongoing assistance is provided to all patients requiring treatment.

The most common form of sleep apnoea is obstructive sleep apnoea where the muscles in the back of the throat temporarily relax which partially or totally blocks the airway whilst you are asleep causing you to stop breathing. These pauses in breathing (apnoeas) can last for more than 10 seconds and it is not uncommon to experience apnoea’s that last for a minute or more. People with this problem may not realise this is happening because they think they slept throughout the night, and sleep apnoea is frequently noticed by the sufferer’s sleeping partner. Sleep apnoea is easily treated and often without the need for medication. The benefits of treatment are lifesaving through dramatically lowering your risk of heart disease and stroke . Treatment can give you back more energy and help you live a longer, healthier, happier and more fulfilling life. As well as the Sleep Clinic at the Life Enhancing Centre, Cooroy, Healthy Sleep Solutions have established Sleep Clinics in Noosa, Eumundi and other sites throughout the Sunshine Coast and hinterland areas. Communicating with Confidence is the priority

Speech Pathologist, Melanie McHugh There are 1.2 million Australians with communication disability. Speech pathologists like Sarah Lock and Melanie McHugh from Eden Private Hospital work with these Australians to provide them with the confidence to communicate. “In Australia today, communication disability is largely invisible. Unseen and out-of-sight,” Sarah Lock said. “Australians with communication disability cannot maximise future educational, health and social outcomes, without the intervention of a speech pathologist. “Communicating with confidence is vital to enable everyone to participate fully in the social, educational, economic and sporting aspects of community life in the Sunshine Coast.” Only 38 per cent of Australians with communication disability are participating in the workforce compared with 80 per cent of people without communication disability. People with communication disability are also less likely

to have a non-school qualification (42 per cent), than those without communication disability (61 per cent). “Communication is a basic human right,” added Melanie McHugh. “Communication, by definition, involves at least two people. It is important that everyone understands that communication is more than speech. “Australians with communication difficulties communicate with others using a variety of means, including wordbased or picture-based communication boards or books, sign and gesture, and spelling. “Technology is playing a growing and vital role in keeping Australians with communication difficulties engaged with their family, friends and those in the Sunshine Coast.” Assistive technology, such as electronic communication and speech generating devices, voice amplification and computer access aids (including eye-gaze mouse control and head tracking devices) allow people with communication difficulties to communicate with those around them. Speech pathologists study, diagnose and treat communication disability, including difficulties with speech, language, reading and writing, stuttering and voice. They work with Australians who have communication disability that may: • emerge during early childhood e.g. speech and language disorders, stuttering, difficulties learning to read and write; or • arise from premature birth, or may be present from birth e.g. cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, fragile X syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, hearing impairments and cleft palate; or • occur as a result of physical, intellectual or sensory disability or a mental illness; or • occur during adult years e.g. traumatic brain injury, stroke, head/neck cancers, neurodegenerative disorders such as motor neurone disease; or • develop in the elderly e.g. dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease. For more information phone Eden Hospital on 5472 6472.

You know the old saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover”. Well unfortunately we are all guilty of doing just that. Think of how you felt the last time you met someone that had poor dental hygiene and bad breath - was your first thought that they didn’t take good care of their health? If you don’t brush and floss teeth daily, food particles can remain in your mouth, which promotes bacterial growth between teeth, around the gums, and on the tongue. This causes bad breath and increases the risk of plaque formation on the teeth, leading to decay and other gum disease. A beautiful clean white toothy smile is something we all aim for and something that is often used by others as a measurement of our overall health. However, looking after your oral health can do more than keep your smile attractive; new research suggests that the health of your mouth mirrors the condition of your body as a whole. For example, when your mouth is healthy, chances are your overall health is good, too. On the other hand, if you have poor oral health, you may have other health problems. Dentists recommend brushing the teeth twice daily! Did you know it is generally preferred to floss BEFORE brushing so that the fluoride from the toothpaste can better “seep” between the teeth. It will also ensure that any plaque that is “flicked off” by the floss can then be brushed off the teeth! Ensure you concentrate on every section of your mouth; don’t forget your gums and tongue! After brushing, it is important to use a good quality mouthwash for extra fluoride protection on the teeth and disinfection of plaque/bad breath causing bacteria. Don’t forget this final important step! It kills up to 97% of germs left behind after brushing!

After brushing, rinse your toothbrush under running water! Store your toothbrush in a clean dry place. Do not share a toothbrush, as this can spread germs. Replace your toothbrush often (usually every 3 months) - after this time, toothbrushes are much less effective at removing plaque from teeth and gums compared to new ones. How do I safely whiten my teeth? This is such a common request in the pharmacy and it is important that you consult our pharmacists if you are at all unsure, as not everyone’s teeth are suitable for whitening. If your teeth and gums are not in healthy condition before whitening, the procedure may even cause more damage. Even if there appears to be nothing wrong with your teeth there may be other reasons why whitening may not work or be suitable. If we find there aren’t any appropriate whitening kits for you in the pharmacy, remember artificial whitening is not the only option for maintaining white teeth. For healthier and better looking teeth in general you should: brush the teeth twice a day for 2 minutes using a fluoride toothpaste; Floss your teeth daily; Chew sugar free gum after meals; Drink water throughout the day; Consume a sensible diet; Visit your dentist regularly; Avoid foods and drinks which may stain the teeth; e.g. herbal/black tea, coffee, red wine, spicy foods like curries, and cigarettes. Teeth will last forever if looked after well - tooth loss is not a normal part of ageing! The most common contributing factor to tooth loss is gum disease! Teeth are the hardest part of your body For more information call your LiveLife Pharmacist on 5447 6028.

U7: The Dragons U7’s had a great game on Saturday against a talented Noosa team. The U7’s played their last game with awesome determination to limit the Noosa players scoring opportunities through some excellent defence. The attacking prowess, honed over the last months was also on display with a player of the day performance from Henry. The Noosa defence was also strong but some elusive running from the Dragons saw them cross the line a number of times. The team would like to thank their excellent coach Luke Youd for doing a great job throughout the year and Doug Toms for leading the club through another successful season. Go the Dragons!! U10: The final game for the season and it was a tight game against Brothers at Kawana this weekend. The Dragons started well scoring the first try, and the game was back and forth with both teams playing strong tough rugby. At half time Dragons were ahead with a small lead, and the second half proved just as impressive from both sides as the first. Some text book tackles, powerful scrums and good positional play from the backs punctuated the game. Brothers ran away with the win late in the second half despite a gallant effort from our boys. Man of the Match went to an outstanding Ely and Louis was rewarded for Most Improved. We are all very proud of how the team has grown and improved this year, and we look forward to seeing what is possible next year. A big round of thanks to the Coaches, Bryan, Brendan and Dan who volunteer their time each week, and to Glenn for being best Water Man on Ground week after week.
