Christmas has come early for Cooroy’s hall COOROY’S hall will soon have a brand new, state of the art kitchen, thanks to a $32,000 grant just received from the Queensland Government. CMHA’s treasurer Carol Johnston said the Association had applied for a grant from the Gambling Community Fund administered by the Queensland Government to cover the costs of a new kitchen for the hall. “We just found out last week that our application has been successful,” Ms

Johnston said. CMHA member Caroline Foxton, who helped to compile the successful grant application in May this year, said the money would mean that the hall’s kitchen would be completely renovated and very well suited to the needs of all users of the newly renovated hall. Local builder Harry Kirk, who is leading a team of builders and enthusiastic labourers in rebuilding the hall, expects the new kitchen to be installed before Christmas.

Ms Johnston said the hall was being redesigned to cater for a wide variety of community uses, and the revamped kitchen would be a very welcome facility for the community’s benefit. The Cooroy Memorial Hall renovations are being jointly financed by Noosa Council and the CMHA with Council providing up to $192,000 from its Heritage Levy and the CMHA providing an equivalent amount in cash, grant funding and in-kind services.

Ignite talks launching in Cooroy A series of short talks where people get to present their story, idea or passion with the world is coming to the Sunshine Coast. This is no ordinary delivery of presentations, there is a twist. Each presenter must deliver their talk along with 20 slides that will advance every 15 seconds giving them 5 minutes of fame. This presentation format called IGNITE® is an international phenomenon and is being launched in Cooroy on the 28th of September, 2017. Professional compére, presentation coach and designer Richard Hansen said that he was frustrated by the lack of opportunities for the everyday person to deliver a message or tell a story to the world. A lot of event managers are looking for speakers who are well known or have expertise in a certain field. He also looked at a number of open talks and found that a lot of these were themed therefore restricting most people from speaking. Ignite was different. One of the philosophies that attracted Richard to Ignite is “Everyone speaks”. After looking at the many videos available online from some of the 350 events around the world and contacting

the Ignite team he applied for, and through his business, Impact Presentations, he was granted a license to run Ignite events on the Sunshine Coast. With the first event launching in Cooroy, he was quickly inundated with applications to speak. With so many interesting applications, choosing speakers was no easy task. We want to maintain a variety of speakers and topics at each event and so every application was first considered on story interest. The speakers we chose must deliver their presentations using the strict Ignite format regardless of their public speaking experience. Audiences attending an Ignite Sunshine Coast event can be assured that there will be no long, boring bullet point presentations. They can also enjoy the presentations knowing that under Ignite Community Events licensing conditions speakers are prohibited from promoting any product, service or business during their presentation. Tickets can be purchased online for the launch of Ignite Sunshine Coast at www.impactpresentations.com.au/events/ignite

Land ownership helps Botanic Gardens to blossom

SHAPING ACTIVEWEAR NOW AT

Sweetpea & Jasmin 24 MAPLE ST COOROY - 5447 6658 THE formal transfer of the land that is home to Noosa Botanic Gardens is finally underway. After 9 years with Seqwater, ownership of the land is reverting back to Noosa Council. Agreements are in place, and the formal process should be completed by Christmas. “Being located right next to Lake Macdonald, the land was transferred into Seqwater’s ownership as a result of a restructure of Queensland’s water supply in 2008,” Mayor Tony Wellington explained. “Despite the land ownership situation, Council has continued to maintain the Gardens, with considerable help from the Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens and volunteers. However, this new land deal will remove uncertainty and allow both Council and the community to plan the future of this much-loved facility. “Council has budgeted to undertake a master planning process for the Botanic

Gardens, so the agreement with Seqwater is very timely. “We are very grateful to Seqwater for their understanding and cooperation.” The agreement involves a reconfiguration of Seqwater’s property (via boundary realignments) to split the lake and foreshore land into separate parcels. “As part of the deal, Council will also be acquiring the Lake Macdonald Park next to the Botanic Gardens, including the boat ramp,” Mayor Wellington added. “Thanks to Seqwater’s generosity, all of the land will transfer to Council at nil cost.” The Noosa Botanic Gardens were the brainchild of resident Ida Duncan in the 1980s. The Gardens were officially opened by then Mayor Noel Playford in August 1990. Freshwater cod season closes

EUMUNDI CATTLE SALE Please give David a call to discuss the current market or for any of your livestock requirements To receive our updates and reports via email, please reply with “ADD” to our email address below.

A CLOSED season applies to Mary River cod and Murray cod from now to 30 November 2017. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officer Coby Walker said the annual closure during spawning season is an important measure to allow the species to reproduce so there are viable stocks of these fish for future generations to enjoy. “For Mary River cod, the closure applies to all Queensland non-tidal waters, including stocked impoundments,” Mr Walker said. “The closed season for Murray cod applies only to Queensland waters within the Murray Darling Drainage Division. “An exception to this closed season applies to Beardmore, Beehive, Connolly, Cooby, Coolmunda, Glenlyon, Leslie and Storm King dams where the fish are stocked. “If fishing for Murray cod at one of the stocked dams where the closure does not apply, a minimum size limit of 60 cm, maximum size limit of 110 cm and a possession limit of 2 applies. “All fishers aged over 18 years must also have a stocked impoundment permit for recreational freshwater fishing except at Beardmore dam which is not included on the Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS).” Mr Walker said changes were made to legislation to give greater protection to

Mary River cod and Murray cod in 2014. “Outside the closed season, Mary River cod is a no take species in all waters except upstream of the walls of Cressbrook, Hinze, Maroon, Moogerah, North Pine, Somerset and Wivenhoe dams, and lakes Dyer (Bill Gunn Dam) and Clarendon. “It was found that Mary River cod are breeding in the waters within and upstream of these impoundments, so a three month closure was implemented to protect them during their spawning period. “Fish caught during the spawning season puts them and their ability to breed at risk. “For this reason, the closure was expanded to include all Queensland non-tidal waters.” For more information on Queensland fishing rules, visit www.fisheries.qld.gov.au, call 13 25 23.

THE Cooroy Chamber of Commerce is hosting another of their popular networking nights on Tuesday 3 October at Club Cooroy RSL and sponsored by Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. Cooroy Chamber networking nights bring Cooroy business owners, community organisation representatives and Cooroy community leaders together to network, socialise and get the latest news. “This will be an informal networking night so it is a bit different to our structured networking night that we held at the beginning of the year. Our networking nights are always very popular as they intimate enough that you can really get to know people but big enough that you make some new connections. Past attendees have said they have developed new business relationships at these meetings and that they are a great way to get to know others in the community,” said Cooroy Chamber President, Danielle Taylor. Tickets are only $5 for Cooroy Chamber members and $10 for non-members which includes light nibbles. There will also be a cash bar available. Bookings can be made online with credit card at www.trybooking.com/RWPU or via email to bookings@cooroy.com.au for an invoice. Date Claimer: Tuesday 3rd October, 5.45pm for a 6.00pm start at Club Cooroy RSL

New market for Cooroy supports local Farmers & Artists THE Cooroy Farmers and Artisans Market have announced that their first market will be on Saturday 7 October from 6am to noon at Lower Mill Road Cooroy. Markets will then be held consistently on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturdays of each month. Typical of Cooroy, these won’t be any normal markets but instead they will be a Farmers Market with an artistic twist. There will be stalls with local produce and value-added products like sauces and pickles, “Made in the Biosphere” products from local artists located in the Noosa & Great Sandy Straight Biospheres, food stalls and entertainment. One thing you won’t be seeing at these markets are imported or mass-produced items. At each market there will also be

stall space donated to a community group to utilise as a fundraiser and/ or to raise awareness. The idea behind the market is to support local growers and artists and highlight the diversity of produce and talent in our region. It will also showcase Cooroy and bring people into town who will hopefully also visit our other retailers. Plus, it will activate the vacant land at the Mill Site Precinct and has great ties with the Butter Factory Arts Centre, the Cooroora Woodworkers and Cooroy Camphor Laurel Inc which all have excellent examples of local artisans on display. For more information or to register your interest as a stallholder, visit www.cooroymarket.com.au.

news Dads enjoy their day at the Botanic Gardens

COOROY RAG

DADS and their families were out in numbers at the annual Spring Plant Fair at the Noosa Botanic Gardens on Sunday. The beautiful sunny weather certainly brought the gardeners and those who just enjoy gardens to the beautiful Botanic Gardens nestled on the banks of Lake Macdonald at Cooroy. Mayor Tony Wellington officially opened the Fair revealing that, subject to some paperwork still to be signed off, the land upon which the Gardens are sited will soon change ownership from SEQWater to Noosa Shire Council: this ownership change being just one of a number of initiatives the Council are discussing in relation to the Noosa Botanic Gardens. Quoting Roman orator Cicero, Mayor Wellington concluded “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need – and Noosa Shire region certainly has a beautiful Botanic Gardens and quality libraries”. Now in its 3rd year and organised by the Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends to inject additional monies into the Botanic Gardens the Plant Fair attracts attendees from all along the Sunshine Coast and up to Gympie. “Numbers this year were up again on the previous year”, said Event Manager Jill Brownlee. “All the stall holders love this event, its unique location and the friendliness and genuine interest of attendees.” Local wedding planning representatives participated this year showcasing what a stunning venue the Botanic Gardens with the Lake Macdonald backdrop is with its variety of wedding setup options. With informative garden guru speakers; variety of plant and garden related stalls; food and beverage; as well as entertainment coupled with a sunny Spring day, the Plant Fair was once again an outstanding success. And gardeners, put a note in your diary – the Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends in conjunction with Noosa High School will hold their follow-up November Plant Sale selling plants unsold at the Plant Fair plus others propagated in the interim. A second chance to get your garden beautiful for your summer visitors.

COOROY RAG

Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank WE all choose to live somewhere. In our case, its Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran, Kin, Lake MacDonald or somewhere in between. We’re part of the beautiful hinterland and our community is a solid and vibrant one. A successful community benefits all who live in it. By that I mean our residents feel safe living here, we have access to quality facilities, we’re able to earn a living here and our towns have an energetic feel to them. To enhance our community experience, we can choose to do a few things to make a real difference for everyone. Choosing to shop locally is a great start. By shopping in our own back yard we get to know the people we deal with on a regular basis. This can be comforting as most people like to deal with people they know and trust. Local business will often try to support other local businesses so fruit, vegies and other items are often sourced from around our region. Shopping locally supports the local business owner. Utilising facilities, attractions or even attending local events is another way of supporting our community. We proudly sponsor the Noosa Country Show and have done so for many years along with Noosa Council. It’s good, old fashioned community celebration at its best and brings generations and the many facets of our community together. Attending events like this ensures exposure for our region and it attracts customers into our towns. The great thing about the Noosa Country

Show, its president, Cameron Magick and his amazing team of volunteers is that the event is produced to support local businesses by local business owners and community volunteers. It’s a great example of our community supporting and celebrating itself. This event has been getting bigger and bigger over the years and the bottom line is a celebration with a thriving community is always a great place to be. So, why not get out there and enjoy the great community we have here? 1st Place for F1 students

The NDSHS F1 students include Ben Walters-Fink, Jayden Lamb, Sam Merchant, Rosie Small and Cooper Lee, who all worked tirelessly for nearly 12 months in the lead up to the competition.

NOOSA District State High Schools elite F1 students took out first place at the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) challenge at Runcorn, and in October, are heading to the state championships held at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane. Student team manager Rosie Small was pleased to be recognised for the hard work the team put in. “It’s something we are really proud of,” Rosie said. The F1 in Schools Program is the largest international STEM competition in world running in 34 countries involving 9 million students globally. The program focuses on developing the creativity and innovation of high school students through a structured engineering design project based on the development of a model formula one racing car. F1 in Schools hub coordinator for the Sunshine Coast Brad Huggins was very pleased with the students’ results. “It is a group of dedicated students that are working hard towards carving a very bright future for themselves,” Mr Huggins said.

Five small things you can do in retirement Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* IF you are retired, you don’t want to fritter away the savings you’ve worked all your life to achieve. So, whether you’re living a comfortable or modest lifestyle in retirement, there are still ways you can make every dollar count and stretch your dollar further. Here are five things to consider: 1. Sell your second car if it’s not critical to your daily routine. Not only could you top up your savings with the sale’s proceeds but you will save on annual registration, insurance and maintenance costs. Find out which concessions are available to you in your state to travel by public transport. Or catch a taxi occasionally as it will still be cheaper than maintaining a second car. 2. Renegotiate your bills to boost your finances.

Check with your providers about bundling your services to save on services such as technology (phone, broadband), energy (electricity, gas), insurance (home & contents, car, caravan, boat) and private health costs. Or check other providers’ rates through comparison websites. Ask if the provider offers a pensioner or seniors discount and then put what you save towards other expenses. 3. Find out what government discounts and rebates you’re entitled to – visit the Department of Social Services or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs websites to learn about benefits and payments, such as pensions, allowances, bonuses, concession cards, supplements and other services

you can access. Or find out about the Seniors Card for discounts on travel, health, lifestyle, government services and finance in your state. 4. Buy groceries cheaply by doing research online to check for sales, half-priced or discounted items before you go shopping. You can also buy in bulk and then share the costs with your neighbours or family. Remember to check details such as use-by dates, the policy on returning items, as well as how and when you can take delivery of your groceries if you buy online. 5. Have your bills paid automatically from your bank account by setting up a direct debit. Most suppliers have this facility, so go online, check your bill or ring your provider to get the details. If

you normally pay your bills in person, you’ll save time and effort by not travelling to the post office (or wherever you pay your bills). Also, you won’t have to check your bills tray every day to remember to pay them when they’re due. These days we need to look after our finances for much longer than we’ve had to in the past. Now, if you’re a male aged 65, you could expect to live for another 19 years (to age 84) while a 65year-old woman’s life expectancy is 87, which is around 30 years longer than our Aussie ancestors of the 1800s. So it’s important to make sure your funds will last the distance % both now and in the future. If you would like to save more and spend less, please contact us on 07 5447 7740.

COOROY RAG

“RYDA” Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program took place out at The House with no Steps on Friday with 165 year 11 students with 8 Teachers supervising on the day. The students were from Noosa District State High. This program has been running for 8 years now and the numbers of students attending is growing. The program is run by the Rotary Clubs of Noosa, Noosa Heads, Noosa Daybreak and Cooroy all volunteering their time free , President of the Rotary Club of Noosa Tess Alexandroff believes that” if we can save just one life with this program then it has been worthwhile”. RYDA is being offered to all year 11 students from Coolum, Noosa, Doonan, Peregian , Cooroy FREE including the bus transport for the students by the Transport and Main Roads department. We do not teach your child how to drive, you

must arrange this. We make them aware of their responsibilities and hopefully they will become better and safer drivers .Sessions cover, Speed and Stopping. How to avoid a crash. Hazards and Distractions. Designed to improve hazard perception skills. Rights and Responsibilities. Deals with risk areas for young drivers The Personality Test, After the Crash and Genève’s story . The greatest impact at RYDA often comes from the personal stories of loss and survival where students come face to face with the conaquenses of making Poor Decisions. “It was an interesting and informative day, teaching the students (and staff) skills that could potentially save lives. RYDA is a one day program conducted at an out of school venue, now is the time to equip young people with the tools and knowledge they need to stay safe on the road,” said Senior teacher Bridge Muir.

Let’s talk about suicide

news Hayfever the scourge of spring IT’S Spring. Guess what that means for some of us? Sneezing? Itchy, watery eyes? There are some things you can do at home that may help improve your symptoms and get you through the “sneezy” seasons. Some of these include: Splashing the eyes with cold water to flush out any pollen/allergens; Staying indoors on windy days and as much as possible in Spring; Reduce your exposure to dust and dust mites, animals and animal dander/hair; Be clever about the plants you have in your garden—choose plants that are pollinated by birds/insects, rather than plants that release seeds into the air; Limit your grass area at home—consider replacing with bricked/paved areas; Smear petroleum jelly (e.g. Vaseline) inside the nose to prevent pollen from irritating the lining of your nose; Vacuum regularly

15 Welfare Officers and an advocate attended a Suicide Prevention Workshop organised by the Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub-branch last week. The workshop was targeted specifically for members of the veteran community and SubBranch Membership Officer Greg Holmes said everyone who attended learnt a lot. “Most people with thoughts of suicide signal

Dr Wei celebrates Would you know how to save a life? her 4th year at Wattle Street Dental DR. Wei from Wattle Street Dental would like to thank her clients for their loyalty and patronage over the last four years. She frankly says that taking over the business four years ago was a very impulsive decision and it has been a bumpy ride. “I didn’t do enough homework about what kind of business I’d bought into and I made lots of financial mistakes,” says Dr Wei. “Three years ago, just before Christmas, I got slammed with a $27,000 council bill that should have been paid before I took over the business, which I couldn’t afford. And two years ago I had to sell our house in Victoria just to keep the cash flow going and keep the staff paid. I didn’t know how long I could keep it up financially without going bust. “But I didn’t give up! I concentrated on patient care and tried to grow my business through word of mouth and advertising! Today we are going strong with three dentists, two hygienists/oral health therapists and twelve staff members! I’m very busy with smile makeovers, implants, orthodontics, TMJ and myofunctional therapy because my patients know I have invested in myself and in the practice to provide the best holistic comprehensive care.” Dr. Caitlyn joined the practice early this year and Dr. Mimi Chien has just joined the team. Dr. Mimi has been working in Mount Isa for the last two years. She is both a qualified pharmacist and dentist. “She’s great with patients and is available for appointments from Wednesday to Saturdays,” says Dr. Wei. As well as normal trading hours Wattle Street Dental is open late Monday to Thursday night and Saturdays for your convenience. Phone 5447 7669.

WE never know when the worst could happen. The important thing is knowing what to do if it does. In Australia, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of heart attacks and cardiac arrests and kills one Australian every 12 minutes. More alarmingly, the survival rate from a cardiac arrest is only 9%. Thankfully, there is help at hand as if an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) can be used in the first three to four minutes, the chance of survival is 70-75%. Every minute of delay in accessing an AED reduces the chance of success by 10%. There are two critical factors in improving these statistics - having AED’s readily available in the community and a community that knows what to do. Because of Cooroy’s strong community connection, two local businesses have partnered to create an AED App that maps locations of where AED’s are available and accessible to the community. The Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has purchased the latest AED, now positioned on the wall behind the front desk at Club Cooroy RSL at 25 Maple Street. Know What To Do (First Aid and AED supplier) and Our Town Apps are creating a free app to show where the nearest AED is in Cooroy should one ever need to be accessed. Jon Symmonds from Know What To Do said the first five minutes are crucial, but there are simple things you can learn that will make a difference. “Over 90% of first aid is performed on loved ones by loved ones, so it makes sense to attend a first aid course to be trained for any situation. With AED training included in this course, we hope locals will enquire not only for themselves but look to bring friends or family members to a course. We are also looking forward to

Jon Symmonds from Know What To Do demonstrates as Elaine Williams and Bendigo Banks' Geoff Edwards look on hearing from any local business that have an AED and are prepared to make it publicly available to save a life. They simply contact me so we can add its location into the app,” he added. “I hope no-one ever has to use this, but if we do it’s great to know this device could save a life,” says Geoff Edwards, Manager of the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank. The donation from the Community Bank branch was made as part of the ‘Defib Your Club for Life’ program, which Bendigo Bank has supported in communities across Australia. “We’re always looking for ways we can strengthen our community in the hinterland and believe a defibrillator is one of the most important pieces of equipment any club or town can have,” Geoff added. For more information about Know What To Do and the first aid courses available, the new AED app, or advice on the best AED, contact Jon Symmonds on 0413 770 846.

2017 Eumundi School of Rock winners FOLLOWING on from the hugely successful inaugural Eumundi School of Rock last year, the band is getting back together with some familiar faces and fresh blood ready to rock the hinterland! The brainchild of multi award-winning local songstress Katie Noonan, last year’s inaugural School of Rock program saw nineteen students aged from eight to thirteen years old undertake more than three months of auditions, training, mentoring and support by the School of Rock teachers. The final result saw three distinctive bands perform on stage in front of a packed house and steal the limelight from Aussie luminaries including Jack Carty, Katie and Tyrone Noonan and Band of Frequencies. Katie Noonan said this year 20 budding musicians from grades three to eight and across a range of musical disciplines from bass to keys and

guitar have made the cut. They will now begin weekly training and mentoring sessions led by Katie and School of Rock teachers including Band of Frequencies band members, National Jazz award-winning saxophonist Zac Hurren and new vocal coach Clint Francis from Thump. “Eumundi School of Rock provides a unique opportunity - at no cost to the student – to develop their musical skills and learn stagecraft under the tutorship of top professionals - and step up and truly perform to a real audience as part of a genuine rock band,” Katie said. Katie said the level of talent in the local community was astounding and that she was pleased to see some of the 2016 kids return to the program. “If you thought 2016 was mind-blowing, wait until school’s out for the class of 2017!”

Congratulations to Brock Shelley and Jodi Gadd on the birth of baby Harleigh Rose born 28th August

Ambulance officer Jeff Langton with Amber and baby Isabell, Luke, Rhys and Steven Congratulations to Amber and Steven Barnes on the birth of baby Isabell. She is a new baby sister for Rhys and Luke. Isabell decided to arrive in a rush and was born at home. Pomona Ambulance Officer Jeff Langton arrived at 7.36am at the home in Black Mountain and with the assistance of fellow Ambos Brenda and Dave (and Amber’s mum Maria Penny) delivered Isabell into the world at 7.40am. This is the 5th baby Jeff has delivered in his 15 years

as an Ambulance Officer and said, although rushed, everything went smoothly. Weighing in at a healthy 8lb 13oz, it seems as though little Isabell was just following in her mother’s footsteps, who herself was born in the backseat of a car. “I’d like to thank Jeff and the crew for their assistance, and my mum, Steve and the boys. It was a very special moment,” said Amber. Congratulations to the family!

Built in 2000, this level entry, solid brick-andtile home sits on a fully fenced 8,878m2 (2.19 acres) block. It’s the ideal home for those who love their space and privacy, but still want very easy access to shops, schools and cafes. Approaching the house via the bitumen driveway and electric entry gate, it’s easy to imagine the children, chooks and dogs running around the established gardens. There are secret paths to explore, fruit and nuts to pick, and a delightful private ‘picnic’ spot - the perfect place for a cuppa! Rest a minute to enjoy the amazing birdlife and seasonal ‘songs’. On hot days you’ll really appreciate the sparkling, in-ground saltwater pool, set amongst the beautiful gardens. A portico opens to the first of two spacious living areas, with glass sliding doors opening to a covered patio. The second living area, a relaxed dining/family space, incorporates a fabulous open kitchen with modern appliances and loads of bench space and cupboards. This smart home is networked for your convenience, with electricity tariffs wired to take advantage of cost savings for the hot water and pool operation. There’s also a 5kw solar system. The master bedroom features a lovely ensuite,

walk-in robe, and floor-to-ceiling bay windows. All the additional bedrooms have built-ins, and the main bathroom includes a separate bath and shower. The self-contained guest accommodation includes a living space, kitchen, separate bathroom and even its own private courtyard. As you would expect in a home of this quality, there are ceiling fans, air-conditioning, security doors, underground power, and ample water, with 15,000 gallons of storage, plus an additional tank for pool top-ups. The billabong is set up with a pump to irrigate those stunning gardens, and it’s fenced to keep your children safe. Topping off this great package is a 2-bay Colorbond shed with workshop and storage, plus a chook house and run - and the chooks are included for free! The current owner has truly loved living here, describing it as a “rock solid family home with loads of improvements over the years”. You could be close to self-sufficient here if you wished, with the conveniences of town living close-by. What more could you ask for! Contact Sam Hargrave 0425 777 121 or Phil Hargrave 0417 750 507.
