Join the Pink Precinct Fun Trail

Cooroy’s Pink Precinct Fun Trail is one of those typically unique Cooroy events. On Saturday 19th October, Cooroy’s streets will be awash with walkers decked out in weird and wacky pink outfits all participating in a pink treasure hunt.

While this event is an outright fun fest it also has an important cause - raising funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and awareness about the most commonly diagnosed disease in Australia that sees 1 in 8 Australian women and 1 in 700 Australian men expected to be diagnosed in their lifetime.

Getting involved is simple and sure to be fun. Dress in pink, turn up at the Cooroy Memorial Hall at 8.30am on

Saturday 19 October, purchase a passport for a gold coin donation and then embarked on a fun trail around Cooroy.

There are loads of prizes up for grabs for best costumes, raffles and lucky door prizes. All ages and fitness levels can participate in the fun, with previous years seeing everything from prams to canines joining in.

Fitbits from Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and Cooroy Future Group Inc and a Childs Bike from Hinternoosa Real Estate are the major prizes.

Noosa Country Show draws big crowds Under gorgeous blue skies the 110th annual Noosa Country Show attracted thousands of locals last weekend, and they went home happy.

Organisers of this year’s show said there was something for everyone and the ticket sales proved it.

Few country shows have stood the test of time as well and the Pomona showground is still the hub of the community in the town where Noosa Shire was originally formed so many years ago.

For two full days, the main arena was full of horses and activity with people of all ages showing off what they have. Riders from all over regional Queensland came to enter with some as young as five years old.

As with all good shows there was sideshow alley, rides of all kinds face painting, great family entertainment and food as far as the eye could see. A massive selection of different goodies meant that show goers were spoiled for choice.

Show goers were happy and right into the spirit of the two-day celebration.

Our show remains one of Queensland’s premier traditional country shows and thus there was plenty of artwork, baked goods, vegetables and fruit, flowers, jams, photographs, plants and more. Some 18 sections submitting for judging including horses, flowers and fruit and vegetables in categories for kids and adults and a massive variety throughout the pavilion.

Show president, Peter Travis said he was delighted how thing all came together over the two days.

“It’s been a labour of love again this year, but we’re very happy with the way it all went,” he said.

“We’re a passionate show committee and thrilled with the program we assembled for 2019. I really want to thank them for their incredible efforts, al-

Uncle Bob’s Jug Band and Smoke ‘n’ Mirrors all packed a punch. Kids enjoyed The Kangagang and the fireworks as the evening entertainment kicked into gear.

The Honky-Tonk Rodeo wowed the crowd on Saturday night and horse events took place right

across the two days. Perhaps it was the affordable ticket price is what attracted so many for the two days? A family pass for one day was $35 with kids under 5 years free.

Time to top-up your tanks?

Unitywater is encouraging residents who are not connected to the town water supply to check their tanks and book in a water delivery.

Unitywater Executive Manager Customer and Community Katherine Gee said that with recent dry weather and no rain forecast, it was a good time to consider topping up tanks.

“It’s getting warmer and generally water consumption increases for activities such as watering gardens,” Ms Gee said.

“We’re seeing our fill stations for water carriers being used more frequently and some residents may be very close to running out or have run out of water already so it’s really important to check tank levels regularly.

“We empathise with residents on tank water during this prolonged dry weather and encourage them to think about topping up and contacting their water carrier before they run dry.”

Ms Gee said that with the lack of rainfall across South-East Queensland, it was important for everyone to be water wise.

“You can limit your showers to four minutes, water the garden in the early morning or late afternoon and make sure appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines are only used when they are full,” she said.

Insurance. It remains one of the hottest topics at workplaces and around coast dinner tables after the craziness of the past few weeks.

Lions Corner Well the King of the Mountain Festival is over for another year, many thanks to all our volunteers, sponsors and of course the competitors who always amaze us with their athletic abilities. Planning is already underway for next years event. The first part of the festival was our Poker run which was well attended by approximately 150 riders. All riders and passengers enjoyed a run up to Gunalda, had a scrumptious home made morning tea and then back to Pomona Bowls club for the presentation of trophies and prizes.

Next event was the Prince and Princess Race which is run on the Saturday before the big race. This is to give our younger runners a taste of the mountain track.

Lots of activities take place on the Sunday including the Skate Jam, Bowls tournament, car show, Antiques and Collectables fair, Mountain Bike ride through the forest, 3 km family fun run and crowd favourite the primary school relays. The day culminates in the International Mountain Challenge which is a test of mental and physical ability of all the competitors. You can find the list of all sponsors on our KOM website.

We held another Bookfest last weekend with lots of great bargains to be had. Fill a bag for $10 was the catch cry. Keep an eye out for our next one in November. October 12 will be our Trivia night which will be held at the Lions Den Cnr School and Mountain St Pomona. $20 entry includes nibbles, hot supper, tea and coffee and a lucky door prize.

Residents warned not to be complacent, with hot, dry weather set to continue Noosa residents need to be on high fire alert, with hot, dry conditions set to continue across the region for at least the next month.

Noosa Council’s Local Disaster Coordinator Carl Billingham said the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) was predicting prolonged hot and dry weather into next month.

“In the wake of the recent bushfire events we

have had extensive discussions with BOM about the short-term forecast for the region and unfortunately it’s not good,” he said.

“Unprecedented hot and dry conditions are forecast for the next month with nil rainfall, making for extremely hazardous conditions.

“We’re asking residents not to be complacent as the risk of bushfire is very

real. Take extra care over the coming weeks – uphold fire bans and never throw cigarette butts from car windows.

Not only is this dangerous, it’s illegal, and carries fines in excess of $5,222.

“The likelihood of bushfires remains high so we all need be vigilant and make sure we are all bushfire-ready,” Mr Billingham said.

Developing a bushfire

Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society Springtime is the most important time in the growing phase of orchids. Most of the plants have flowered and are now producing new growths and new roots; this is the ideal time to repot your collection. Most of the orchids I grow are ephytes (grow on trees) and hate been grown in pots. The potting media which is normally bark should be replaced every 2 years as it breaks down and causes the mix to hold too much moisture, which leads to the roots rotting. I feel the most important part of successfully cultivating Orchids in pots is the fresh media. I try to use the best potting media I can get as I feel my plants deserve that.

Remnants Contained - The Keeping of Memories Remnants Contained The Keeping of Memories is an exhibition by local artist Penny McIntyre and opens on Friday 27 September at Wan’din’in arts space, 73 Memorial Drive, Eumundi from 6 to 8 pm.

Penny spent the majority of her life in Brisbane, growing up within a large family.

Her father was a Melbourne artist involved with the early “Social Realist” movement, and his influence and strong views on social justice had a lasting effect on her young mind. Her journey with storytelling through creative mediums commenced with ceramics in 1986 at South Brisbane Tafe shortly after the birth of her second child.

“Many years later when timing was right, finances almost there I had the luxury of full time study at Queensland College of Art,” says Penny.

This opened the door

for a new practice in metalsmithing, jewellery and small s c u l p t u r e . P e n n y ’s skills in manipulating metal, combined with her strong affinity with found objects, ceramics and creating a narrative have resulted in a fabulous collection of objects, jewellery and sculpture.

This exhibition will be her first solo show and was conceived two years ago during the overwhelming task of collating and sifting through collections of “stuff” in her studio.

These “very necessary bits and pieces” Penny says, “only an artist would understand why we keep so much”.

Many are very precious to her and contain mixed memories which form a narrative on past lives, travels, family and old friendships with the importance lying in “our relationship with our memory – what we do with it is important –to learn from mistakes

and improve things for others and ourselves in the future” says Penny.

This is an exhibition for everyone, if you wish to be challenged, amused or tempted by the vast variety of jewellery, critters in cages and remnants contained…

“The keeping of memories, the collection of remnants and the need to contain our possessions using a myriad of objects, boxes and jewellery becomes an obsession with many. We keep mementos and create collections, we compartmentalize our collections and build on their number. Sorting and labeling, containing and storing, this obsession with order and containment and particularly the need to own “stuff” was connected historically to times of hardship, however in contemporary times it is connected to our fear of lost identity and purpose and the need for

some control over our environment – the over regulated lives we inhabit stifling our creative and impulsive natures”. Light refreshments, live music and a cash bar will be available at the opening.

After 20 plus years serving the local community, Hope Central Church is opening their new auditorium on Saturday October 5th.

Pastors Graham and Michelle Young took the role of Senior Pastors four years ago and immediately decided to finish what had been approved by council back in 2002, which included a new 250 seat auditorium.

This with new offices, a playmaze for children, a cafe and total modernising of the building has now been accomplished. Pastor Graham compliments the amazing church for enabling this accomplishment. Hundreds of hours volunteered and a great group of generous people have enabled this to be completed. The church has a congregation of over 100 people and are looking forward to growing larger and helping more people in the years ahead.

As well as opening the new building on Satur-

day October 5th, they are also changing their name to Impact Church Sunshine Coast. Impact Church has seven congregations around Australia and are a part of the Australian Christian Churches movement.

“By joining with Impact Churches there will be greater opportunity for this local church to have leadership development and support in all areas of growth,” said Pastor Graham.

The big opening day is for the whole community. It is a free event and there will be free fairy floss, popcorn, a sausage sizzle, tours of the new premises, a big jumping castle and more. The playmaze will also be open on the Saturday, free for all children aged 1-11 years (don’t forget your socks).

Fundraising for our drought affected farmers continues to be an urgent issue, with farmers facing record hardships across Queensland and New South Wales.

Last month the Cooroy RSL raised $600 for drought affected farmers with Rural Aid’s Parma for a Farmer Campaign.

For every parmigiana sold during August at Cooroy RSL, $2 was donated to Rural Aid’s Buy a Bale initiative! These funds go towards providing fodder, financial assistance, water, and more to those in need!

Stay away from bats!

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service’s (SCHHS) public health unit is urging locals and visitors not to touch bats, even if they seem sick, injured or dead.

Public health physician Dr Rosie Muller said drought conditions and recent bushfires across the state had impacted the habitats and food sources of bats, meaning it would be more common to find injured, sick or dead bats.

“Bats can be affected by hot weather, fires and smoke, and people

may want to help them, however, we urge members of the public to avoid touching bats,” Dr Muller said.

“Bats can infect people with Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV). ABLV is like the rabies virus, and infection can be fatal. All bats are potential carriers of Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV) which is why only trained and vaccinated professionals should handle them.

“ABLV can be spread from bats to people through a bat bite, scratch or by getting bat saliva in the eyes, nose or mouth.

Weight Loss and the Set Point Obesity and excess weight are occurring in epidemic proportions. Nearly two-thirds of Australian adults and over a quarter of children and adolescents were classified as overweight or obese in 2014-2015. Apart from the detriment to cardiovascular health, carrying extra weight often comes with selfesteem issues which affect quality of life.

Despite all this doom and gloom, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Dietitian and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more.

“All individuals have a unique metabolic ‘set-point’, a weight range that your body fights to maintain. To stay in its ‘happy place’, your body will resist weight loss attempts and cause you to regain weight after successful weight loss. The set-point is

raised by a number of factors - sedentary lifestyle; lack of exercise; frequent consumption of sugar combined with saturated fats; inadequate protein; poor sleep; stress or anxiety; poor gut health; and high toxin exposure. Lowering your set-point is key to losing weight and keeping it off. Read on to learn more about how to prevent the rebound weight gain that often occurs with diets that aren’t designed for safe and sustainable weight loss.

“Highly processed foods can be a roadblock on your weight loss journey. They are specifically designed with ingredients such as fat and sugar to hijack your brain, making it harder to stop eating them. Described by obesity researchers as ‘hyperpalatable’,

these often highly processed foods confuse your brain’s fullness threshold so you continually want more. In contrast, wholefoods have minimal fat and sugar, and contain fibre which naturally allows your appetite to normalise. Basket Buddies need your help

Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade have launched our 2019 Basket Buddies program for 2019 but we need your help to reach our 2019 goal of 350 baskets.

Thank you for all that have signed up so far, we are grateful for your support but we are currently about 100 hampers short of delivering our 2019 target.

Our Basket buddies program is currently in its 11th week with 14 more to go, but we would love to be able to reach our target this year.

Last year, the Basket Brigade were once again overwhelmed by the generosity of Sunshine Coast families, workplaces, schools and other groups who

collected food items each week, for the baskets.

It’s easy to be a Basket Buddy and anyone can join. For just a few dollars a week, you can really make a difference this Christmas to a Sunshine Coast family in need.

If you’re able to add one extra food item to your weekly shopping basket online at http://eepurl.com/ grFC_H You’ll then receive a food list - so you’ll know what to buy each week.

Then you just keep collecting your food items right up to the drop off/collection week in late November. The Basket Brigade team will then tally all the food collected by the Basket Buddies, and work out what they need to buy, if anything, to top up the 350 baskets.

All the food donated will be packed into baskets for all nominated families/individuals, along with a gift for every family member. All baskets will be delivered by Basket Brigade volunteers right across the Sunshine Coast on Saturday, 14 December.

Pet owners urged to keep an eye out during parasite season Spring is the season when the weather finally starts warming up and the humidity starts making the population of Queensland sweat. However, Spring also ushers in the hordes of parasites which target our pets and cause potentially fatal illnesses, including tick paralysis and heartworm disease.

Parasite prevention is a critical part of pet ownership and needs to be the responsibility of all pet parents. If left untreated, fleas, ticks, and worms can have serious impacts on pet’s health.

While most parasites cause mild irritations for your pet, Richard Murrihy, owner of Pet Affair in Cooroy, is urging all pet owners to constantly check on their pet and take action if they notice any change in their behaviour or health.

If your pet is living with a parasite, sooner or later you will see physical symptoms which can impact your pet’s health or comfort.

Richard believes that there are many ways that you can ensure that your pet is being monitored and staying parasite-free.

“Pets often get a parasite at some point in their life – in fact, it’s probably less common to for a pet to live their whole life without ever coming in contact with a parasite.

Common parasites that your pet may include fleas or worms, while some other parasites are more common during the Spring season, such as ticks or ear mites.

“Keep in mind that it can take several days before symptoms appear after a parasite has come in contact with your pet, so checking regularly can help treat parasites before the symptoms get too serious.

“Some of the things that pet owners should be looking out for are significant changes in behaviour, such as “scooting”, weight loss, change in appetite or water consumption, or panting. “ Richard says pet owners should fully understand the danger of parasites in order to prevent them. “Parasites can cause life-threatening conditions to your pet if left untreated. If that isn’t enough cause for concern, some parasites can even infect and transmit diseases to humans,

Tips for exercising when you have pain One of the most challenging aspects of living with an injury or chronic pain is how it can quickly impact your exercise routine. If you have been working towards a fitness or weight goal, this can be extremely demoralizing. Here are a few tips that can help to keep you on track while you recover.

Staying as active as possible during this time can mean you’re in the best position to reach your goals again once your injury has healed.

1. Try a new activity: When injury strikes, it can be tempting to stop exercising altogether and rest while you recover. An injury can be frustrating, but it can also be an opportunity to try out a different sport. If you’re a runner with an ankle injury, you can keep up your fitness by swimming instead.

Cycling can be an excellent option for people for dealing with knee pain, and if you’re a swimmer with shoulder pain, maybe switch to running for a while. Check with your physiotherapist for some ideas to keep you moving.

2. Exercise within your limits: If you’re getting pain at 5km, this doesn’t always mean you should give up running altogether. Your physiotherapist can help you monitor your symptoms carefully and plan an exercise routine that keeps your fitness up while reducing symptom flare-ups. Staying as active as

possible throughout your recovery can also mean that you a better placed to get back to your best performance once symptoms reside.

3. Take the opportunity to improve your footwear and equipment: Injury and pain can be a great prompt to look at your equipment and technique.

For example, with hip and knee pain, the type of shoes you wear can have a significant difference.

Often pain has more than once cause, with technique and equipment more often than not having a substantial impact on the stress placed on your body. Your physiotherapist is an excellent source of advice in this area, don’t hesitate to ask for an assessment.

4. Take to the water: Hydrotherapy has long been used to help patients with joint pain or muscle weakness exercise. The water helps reduce joint stress and provide extra sensory input that can reduce pain. Exercising in water can be especially helpful for sufferers of chronic pain or those who have pain with weight-bearing. Speak to your physio for a hydrotherapy program if you’re not sure how to approach exercise in water.

Noosa Biosphere gets the nod of approval Noosa Shire’s place among the world’s biosphere reserves is assured for another decade, with UNESCO giving Noosa Biosphere Reserve the 10-year tick of approval.

Mayor Tony Wellington said the acknowledgement is another win for the region.

“It is wonderful to receive confirmation that UNESCO has not only confirmed the ongoing status of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve, but that they have done so with accolades.

“Noosa Shire was designated a Biosphere Reserve in 2007 by UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere program. In true pioneering Noosa fashion, it was the first biosphere designation in Queensland,” he said.

The World Network of Biosphere Reserves, which recognises areas that demonstrate a balanced relationship between nature and people, now consists of 701 biosphere reserves in 124 countries.

In its review, the Advisory Committee acknowledged the efforts to manage tourism and the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation’s initiatives across the restoration of fish in the river and work on koala populations.

“All Biosphere Reserves are required to carry out periodic reviews and report back to UNESCO. This is Noosa’s first assessment, and it appears we passed with flying colours.

“The Advisory Committee noted our Zero Emissions Noosa objective, and encouraged authorities to continue efforts t o reach this goal. They also commended Noosa on its efforts to deal with feral animals that present major threats to biodiversity conservation, entreating us to share our experiences with other biosphere reserves that also suffer from invasive species.

The Cooroy Golf Club Management Committee recently suggested a new look promotions campaign, including a facelift, to acknowledge the 84 years the club has been in existence. The Committee invited enthusiastic artists from the Creative Artists Group at Noosa Arts and Crafts to paint a mural on the face of the club house.

Designed by Gabi Dick with a theme to acknowledge wildlife on the course and the early platypus emblem of the Club, and drawn up by Annelise Howes, the mural consists of a caricature golf buggy painted by Dave Gilbert and Don Clelland, a great platypus painted by Jill Harris, a nearby startled possum painted by Tricia Bradford, a giant kookaburra painted by Annelise Howes, and a reminder to golfers to keep their tempers with a golf club wrapped around a tree by Tricia Brad-

ford. Several bunkers and water hazards complete the design.

Managed by Club Secretary, Andrew Dick and his wife, Gabi, both of whom worked tirelessly, blocking in a background with the help of Don Clelland and reproducing projected outlines the evening prior to painting. The exercise took two fun filled days applying paint to walls, clothing, hands and faces in spite of a freezing wind that dried the paint on the brushes before it could be used, using paint donated by Resene from Paint Right Noosaville with the help of Kim who suggested and helped select the materials and scaffolding kindly lent by Ron ad Grant.

Cooroy Golf Club Manager Wayne Paston, initially looked on apprehensively but was delighted with the final results.

Applications open for Women Leaders in Sport program Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien is encouraging female coaches, officials and administrators to develop their leadership skills with the Australian Government’s 2020 Women Leaders in Sport program.

The Women Leaders in Sport program has provided professional development to more than 24,000 women since its inception in 2002 and applications for the 2020 program close 23 September 2019.

“This important national program gives aspiring female leaders the skills to shape the future of sport in Australia, reach their leadership potential as coaches, officials or administrations and develop an even stronger sporting culture,” Mr O’Brien said. “I encourage women in Wide Bay to put their hands up and apply to participate in this program so they can lead the new generation of local sports stars.”

The Women Leaders in Sport program is managed by Sport Australia in partnership with the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s

Office for Women. The Women Leaders in Sport program comprises Leadership Workshops for individuals and organisations, as well as development grants of up to $3,000 for individuals, and up to $20,000 for organisations.

Minister for Youth and Sport Richard Colbeck said the program was part of the Australian Government’s commitment to supporting more girls and women in sport at all levels.

“This program complements a range of Federal Government initiatives to support more girls and women in sport, such as our $150 million investment to build and upgrade female-friendly facilities around the country,” Minister Colbeck said.

“A program like Women Leaders in Sport builds capability among women and is a fantastic avenue to attract, retain and nurture female talent in sport.”

Help Nathan compete in Global Games Help Nathan compete in the 2019 Global Games for Athletes with an Intellectual Disability.

Nathan Glarvey resides in Cooroy and has been chosen to represent Australia in the upcoming 2019, INAS, Global Games, (International Federation for Athletes with Intellectual Impairments) which is to be held in Brisbane this October.

The Global Games will be hosting around 1000 athletes from all over the world, 13 athletes are selected to be a part of the Australian Cycling Team, 12 of the team are from Victoria and only 1 has been selected from Queensland - Nathan Glarvey.

Nathan is Autistic with an Intellectual Impairment.

He lives independently with his best mate “Bill” his pet Jack Russell. He works part time in Noosa at the Noosa Peppers Resort but the cost of becoming a team member is $3500 which is beyond his reach. Nathan has previously represented Australia in Athletics in Tunisia, Hungary and Germany winning a gold medal in the German Nationals 10000

metres. Since 2004 Nathan has held the Australian Record for the Marathon for Athletes with an Intellectual Disability.

Nathan was previously on the Australian Paralympics team and chosen to represent in the 2004 event in Beijing but because of the cheating scandal that involved the Spanish team in the 2000 Sydney Olympics all athletes with an Intellectual Disability were not allowed to compete.

Since then he has endeavoured to compete in as many challenging events that he can compete in.

One of these events is the Ironman event where Nathan Swims 5 Klm, Cycles 180 Klm and then runs a 42 Klm Marathon where he finished in 11 hrs 22 minutes with a position of 289th out of over 1100 competitors.

A representative of Sports Inclusion for the INAS saw that the United States have made claims that they have the only athlete in the world with an Intellectual Impairment to compete

and represent them in an Ironman event. What they didn’t know was that Nathan has completed in six Full Ironman events recording times much faster than the United States claim.

Nathan’s present points status in the Ironman events ranks him 48th in the country and 507th in the world rankings.

Ironman times and asked him to try out for the cycling team. Nathan quickly entered some cycling road events and managed to obtain a good enough time to win himself a position in the Australian Team.

How you can help Nathan Nathan needs help to achieve his goal and he needs to raise over $8000 for the costs of Registration for the Global Games and further costs for the upgrading of his Racing Bike and equipment. The Cooroy community, RSL, Lions and Rotary have already got behind Nathan with some support but he still requires a considerable amount to achieve his goals to enable him to compete on an International level.
