Cutters break their drought after 26 years

WE are The Cutters - Check out the scoreboard - 9495 days, (26 years and 3 days). That’s how long it’s been since the Pomona-Cooran Cutters last tasted premiership glory. In a game where no inch was given by either team it was the composure and will to win, that got the Cutters an 11-0 win over the Beachmere Pelicans at Sunshine Coast Stadium. After being the competition leaders since round 1, the Pelicans went in as favourites despite losing a player to suspension. After the extra time thriller against Kilcoy the week before there was an air of confidence coming from Chris Kenny Oval during the week. Two busloads of supporters made sure that Sunshine Coast Stadium would have a sea of blue and gold for the game. Team captain Grant Adams led the players out onto the field. This Cutters’ team has both youth and experience in a 17 year old Lachlan Proctor and 44 year old Des McLeary, playing in his 23rd season for the club, without having gained premiership success. Also

in the team was Cutters’ President Dylan Crawford-Window. His dad Geoff “Wrecka” Window was a member of the victorious 1992 Cutters side. Field position was vital for both teams but neither team was able to capitalise on it until the 14th minute when Kyle Jones dived over from dummy half to open the scoring. It was just reward for Kyle who has been one of the Cutters most consistent players all year. Jake Scanlan was able to convert the try making it a 6-nil game. A head clash between Jim Johnstone and his Beachmere counterpart meant the 3 try hero from the week before needed to come off and be tended to. His replacement Jonah Hope-Hoggets, didn’t let anyone down especially when he crossed over the line out wide just before half time after some great lead up work by Grant Adams and Jake Bullen. With the conversion just missing a 10 - nil score line was well earnt for the Cutters whose defence at times were on the ropes after some silly penalties and dropped ball. Continued Page 3

Cutters break their drought after 26 years

From Page 1 The theme during halftime was to leave nothing in the tank and the Cutters’ forwards did just that. Book ends Dave Fray and Jon Broad took countless hit-ups, while Liam Cobb despite giving away a lot of size, showed plenty of ticker. In this final half of footy for the year, with everything on the line, the Cutters took no backward step. With a stiff breeze behind them, Beachmere tried time and time again to play the game down the Cutters end. They underestimated the back 3, comprising of

wingers Ben Hayes, Jim Johnstone and fullback Jake Scanlan. They returned each kick with venom which the forwards took confidence from. Beachmere did get their chances but the Cutters’ defence held tight, holding Beachmere players up over the line several times. When Beachmere did get over the line they were ruled to be offside from the kick. With time running out Beachmere started to play panicked footy. This led to an error leaving the Cutters in a good position. A 5th tackle

penalty with 3 minutes to go, allowed the Cutters to wind the clock down and a field goal to be slotted over by Luke Martin, which took the score to 11 – nil. This made it near impossible for Beachmere to win. The last 2 minutes saw celebrations start for the loyal and faithful Cutters’ supporters on the hill. Once fulltime sounded emotion overcame all. For the players and coach the realisation hit that the 26 year premiership drought was over. The defeats in 2013 and 2015 were now a distant memory, especially for

several players who played in those games. As a fitting tribute, the link between the only Cutters’ premiership side and this year’s side, Dylan Crawford-Window, was named the Mal Meninga medallist for being Man of the Match. His experience, bullocking runs and defence was a catalyst in the win. The mantra of leaving nothing in the tank ran true as each player dug deep. Celebrations lasted well into the night and following days, as the crowning trophy Betsy, took pride of place at Cutter Headquarters.

Our beautiful Cooroy Christmas Tree needs refurbishment of the lights and decorations. We are hoping for a small contribution from everyone in the community to have the best Christmas tree ever. $1 donation from everyone in Cooroy would make the best tree ever. You can donate at Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank. Bold as Love Jewellers has also donated a raffle prize of $1000 jewellery hamper to raise funds with tickets avalable instore.

Noosa Country Show draws big crowds GREY skies may have threatened, but the 109th annual Noosa Country Show attracted thousands of locals last weekend, and they went home happy. Organisers of this year’s show said there was something for everyone and the ticket sales proved it. Few country shows have stood the test of time as well and the Pomona showground is still the hub of the community in the town where Noosa Shire was originally formed so many years ago. For two full days, the main arena was full of horses and activity with people of all ages showing off what they have. Riders from all over regional Queensland came to enter with some as young as five years old. As with all good shows there was sideshow alley, rides of all kinds face painting, great family entertain-

A massive selection of different goodies meant that show goers were spoiled for choice. The rain never really took hold and show goers

were happy and right into the spirit of the twoday celebration. Our show remains one of Queensland’s premier traditional country shows and this there was plenty of artwork,

Some 18 sections submitting for judging including horses, flowers and fruit and vegetables in categories for kids and adults and a massive variety throughout the pavilion. Show president, Cameron Magick said he was delighted how thing all came together over the two days. “It’s been a labour of love again this year, but we’re very happy with the way it all went,” she said. “We’re a passionate show committee and thrilled with the program we assembled for 2018. I really want to thank them for their incredible efforts, allowing us to showcase the very best of Noosa Country to so many. We have to thank our many sponsors too. Noosa Council has been a great support along Geoff Edwards and the team at the Pomona and Cooroy Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank”, Cameron added. This year, a great mix

of our local school bands and more experienced local acts filled the two stages providing great music and entertainment for fans of all ages. Hard Labour, Shades of Grey and Robin and the Hoods, Smoke and Mirrors, Contraband, Fiona O’Shea & The Passengers, FYG Chutney and Uncle Bob’s Jug Band all packed a punch. Kids enjoyed The Kangagang and the fireworks as the evening entertainment kicked into gear. The honky-tonk rodeo wowed the crowd on Saturday night and horse events took place right across the two days. The ever-favourite Classic Car Show and Ute Muster were also crowd pleasers on Saturday. Perhaps it was the affordable ticket price is what attracted so many for the two days? A family pass for one day was $35 and $45 for both days. If you missed the 109th instalment of this great community get-together, then plan to get along in 2019.

Maple Street’s safer pedestrian crossing?

The Pedestrian crossing at Tewantin is a lot more visible to traffic COOROY residents were much relieved when it was announced that a new and safer pedestrian crossing was to be installed by Council in Maple Street. Unfortunately many have been left disappointed with the outcome saying the crossing is barely any improvement to what was already there with it seeming to be very vehicle friendly offering little or no more safety to pedestrians. “If it couldn’t be any more raised, then we would have much preferred something like the

Page 6 - Cooroy Rag, September 26, 2018

one at Tewantin (pictured above) with lines also marked on the ramps which would have made it much more visible to traffic (and therefore safer for pedestrians),” said one resident. The traffic has steadily increased in Cooroy over the last several years and Maple Street, being our main street, now has a constant flow of traffic all day with peak periods likened to that in much more populated areas such as Mooloolaba. news Packaging - information worth knowing Simone Flavelle, Senior Branch Manager, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches It’s not always widely known by most banking customers, but by taking certain banking products at your branch there are sometimes very worthwhile discounts available on your home loans or home loan lines of credit. When I talk to my friends about banking, they usually want to know “What’s in it for me?” Sure, don’t we all? Well, you may need to check with your local branch on their particular policies but often you might be eligible for a discount on your variable loan interest rate. Also you may find that it is not just on your home loan rate that discounts are applicable. For instance on your everyday accounts, most fees and charges could be absorbed by the bank. These advantages are achieved by what we call Packaging. Packaging refers to the idea of having several specified accounts or nominated items of business relationships with your bank. For example: By taking out your home insurance with your banks affiliated insurer and you may receive a 0.5 % discount on your home loan rate. On a $250,000 loan that equates to over $1,200 in interest saved in one year. Also, if your everyday accounts are not currently with the same bank as your home loan provider, there may be benefits in changing them. You might receive exemptions on account fees or alternatively a reduction in your home loan interest rate or both. Every individual customer’s situation is

unique. There are some who might receive little or no advantage in adjusting their current banking or insurance circumstances. For many who want to be sure they’re making the most of every money saving opportunity, the local bank branch is not far away. In our case, that’s at 36 Maple Street, Cooroy and 3 Station Street, Pomona where we’d be happy to chat about Packaging or any home loan matter. You can also contact me on 5447 7131 or 5485 1786 or on email simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au. news Is it better to buy an investment property or home first?

COOROY RAG

Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* THERE’S a lot to consider when buying an investment property or home, especially for the first time. Have you been saving for a long time and feel ready to get into the property market? Maybe you’re considering buying a home to live in or investing in a property you can rent out to somebody else. Either way, it’s worth knowing some more about both options to ensure you’re making a well-informed decision, noting that regardless of what you choose to do, property prices can go through major swings that can occur with little warning. Buying your first property to live in: • First home owner grants. Depending on which state or territory you live in, could help you to finance your first home purchase. This doesn’t apply to investment properties, and in some states you’ll lose your right to this grant if you buy an investment property first. • Security and stability. You can stay in your home as long as you like, as long as you’re making your home loan repayments. • Exempt from capital gains tax (CGT). Any home that is classified as your main residence, whether it’s your first

place or not, is free from CGT when you go to sell it. • Expenses stack up and aren’t tax deductible. There will be initial costs, such as stamp duty and legal fees, as well as ongoing costs, such as water rates, building insurance and repairs. When buying an investment property, you’ll also be hit with these costs, but depending on your situation some of the costs attached to your investment property may be tax deductible. • Where you really want to live may not be where you can actually afford to buy. So, whether it means choosing a place that’s smaller, further out from the city, or looking for a job closer to your new home, you may have to make some trade-offs. Buying your first property as an investment: • You may get a cheaper place. An investment property doesn’t need to tick all the boxes of your ‘dream home’. • It’s not an emotional decision. Your purchase should be based on investment potential, including forecast rental return and capital growth. So, instead of walking into a place and having to love the look of

it, you can walk in with your investor’s hat on. • Earn rental income. If you’re renting out your investment property, you’ll be getting money from someone else to contribute to your mortgage, which means you could pay off your loan sooner. Bear in mind however that the rent you receive may not completely cover your home loan repayments and additional costs. • Tax advantages and disadvantages. Many of the costs associated with an investment property are often tax deductible. For instance, the interest and fees you pay on your loan, advertising for tenants, as well as cleaning, gardening, maintenance and pest control. Also, if your property is negatively geared - which simply means the interest, and other costs you incur are more than the income your investment property produces - the loss can reduce the amount of tax you pay on your earnings at tax time. On the flip side, if you sell your investment property down the track and make a profit, capital gains tax may be payable. • Management and obligations. If you’re time poor or located a long distance from your investment property, another thing you’ll need to

think about is appointing a property manager to take care of certain duties. On top of that, there are various responsibilities that apply to landlords before, during and when ending a tenancy and these can differ depending on which state the investment property is located. Whatever you decide to do, please contact us first on 07 5447 7740. We can assist you to make sure your strategy suits your lifestyle, circumstances and financial goals.

Volunteers needed for Sub-Branch TO continue the tradition of the Returned & Services League of Australia, your local Sub-Branch needs support from local ex-service men and women. Besides duties of President, Deputy President, Secretary, Treasurer, membership and other committee positions, support is needed for: Anzac Day, Remembrance Day, Vietnam Day and other special occasions; Visitation to hospitals, aged care, rehabilitation and like facilities; Drivers of bus and car to take members to appointments etc; Welfare officials to care for widows and families and those in need; Pension / advocate duties; Gardeners / landscapers for Cenotaph and cemetery areas. These duties can only be carried out successfully with sufficient volunteers. Any support you may be able to give, as little as it may be, would make it easier on the present volunteers. news Dinner with the Mayor a sell out success THE Saw and Mill restaurant was fully booked for the ‘Dinner with the Mayor’ event, hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, on September 18th. Diners were entertained by MC Richard Hansen, who even tried his hand at rapping, as they enjoyed their 2 Course meal. SGT Mal Scott, was a guest speaker, who shared how Cooroy had deterred crime in the township since the installation of CCTV cameras. Also his feedback from visiting police to our area about how friendly everyone was, and how surprised they were at being greeted in the street as they walked around town. Mal was applauded as our Town Hero, and thanked for his tireless work in our community. Mayor Tony Wellington spoke of works completed and in progress in the Noosa Shire. Of interest was that the

population cap would be reached by 2041. Paid parking is being investigated for Hasting Street precinct, with recent expert advice being given to Council that paid parking is proven not to in any way lessen traffic, but the revenue raised could be used for more transport / road infrastructure. For Cooroy the intersection at Myall and Elm was mentioned, with the likelihood of traffic lights being installed, as this will be the fastest and cheapest way to solve this confusing junction.

For a roundabout to be put in, land would have to be reclaimed which would be expensive and would be a much longer process. There will be community consultation before any final decision will be made. Also of mention was a waterplay nature park being developed next to the Cooroy Library, which is headed by Cr Frank Pardon. Mayor Wellington then went on to talk about his life and career at the request of Mr. Hansen. The audience was given a brief overview of by Tony’s life before local politics. Many

were surprised by his background in the arts. He is an accomplished artist, a passionate photographer and also worked in the editing department in many Australian movies, including Dead Calm. He talked eloquently of how he ended up as Mayor, beginning when he joined the protest group for the Sunshine Coast Amalgamation. The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce was recognised as being one of the strongest chambers in Queensland and will continue hosting ‘Dinner with the Mayor’ nights as they have for over a decade.

news Don’t miss Woodworkers Show

COOROY RAG

LAST year the Cooroy-based Cooroora Woodworkers Club adopted a new leadership team and began a significant renewal of club policies and activities. High on the list was updating club governance, improving member experience and enhancing safety. An equipment review resulted in the installation of several new machines in the workshop as well as a bigger and better log handling tractor at the timber milling site. Club membership has continued to grow, with a mix of men and women of all ages taking advantage of the club’s excellent facilities. One of the changes made was to re-schedule our annual Woodcraft Show from May late September, and to return the event to the Cooroy Memorial Hall. The event will run over two full days, 28th and 29th September, beginning at 8.30 each day. Club President John Cantwell says that this year’s show will be better than ever. “Our annual Woodcraft Show allows our members to show their skills to the general public and to engage in friendly competitions with other woodworking clubs,” he said. “In this age of disposable mass-produced consumer items, visitors to our events are always delighted by the beauty of natural wood, especially when it has been crafted into an attractive or functional hand-made object.” As always, the Cooroy Woodcraft Show will feature impressive displays of work by club members and woodworkers form regional clubs, as well as works produced by talented local school students. John Cantwell told us, “Competitions are a great way to add interest to any event and this year the judges will have their work cut out choosing the best exhibits in a variety of classes such as woodturning, carving, marquetry, toy-making and general woodworking.” Cash prizes and goods are on offer to the winning entries, generously donated by Cooroy businesses.

There will also be plenty of activities to watch, with demonstrations throughout both days of woodturning, box-making, carving and other woodworking crafts. Club members will be on hand to answer questions and provide woodworking advice. Kids will be able to try assembling a small box that they can keep to hold that special something. Visitors who enjoy a bit of noise and sawdust can see logs being milled into beautiful slabs of timber which will be available for purchase along with pre-milled timber of several varieties. Many of the exhibits will be on sale, plus small wooden items, toys, show bags and ready-to-build box kits will also be offered at very modest prices. Each year, the Cooroora Woodworkers Club conducts its major fund-raising raffle in conjunction with the Woodcraft Show. This year the prize is an absolutely beautiful blanket box constructed by club members using our own timber. Tickets are on sale now at various outlets and the lucky winner will be announced at the conclusion of the Show. Club President John added, “All proceeds from the raffle and other activities go directly back into the club so that we can continue to provide an enjoyable hands-on activity for members of our community, some of whom have never worked with wood before. Come and join the fun at our Show!”

Scarecrows have a new role in Mary Valley SCARECROWS will be robbing the Mary Valley of more than one kind of pest this spring, as organisers officially open scarecrow season. A new category with $100 prize money has been offered for scarecrows made from the area’s aggressively invasive vine – cats claw. Harvesting the woody fibre helps revive local vegetation, while making scarecrows has historically been a cue for local birdlife to leave farmers’ crops alone. Residents have until October 1 to build their scarecrow entries for the annual Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival, which above everything gives people an opportunity to channel country humour into humanoid form. The festival runs from October 1 to November 10, and entries need to be registered and displayed by October 1 to be judged. A $100 prize is on offer in the traditional and artistic categories, as well as cats claw, with $50 for the children’s category (five years to 15 years). Keen residents picked up some tips on using cats

claw at the weaving workshop held in conjunction with the Mary River Festival at the weekend at Kandanga. Installation artist Rene Bahloo shared her skills and thoughts about weaving our world into a better place. Book for the next workshop via email cy78@activ8.net.au or phone Glenda on 0411 43589. The scarecrow festival had its origins in the Mary Valley hinterland and has been held for more than 15 years, with ‘crows popping up in obvious and unlikely places from Conondale through to Dagun near Gympie. The scarecrow festival is great fodder for ‘crow spotting, the fun game for visitors who travel country roads looking for straw creatures, arty sculptures and other creations honoring the tradition of building scarecrows. There’s a map to lead you down country roads and discover new places, and it’s a great excuse to pack a picnic and tour through Mary Valley Country. The locals will tell you that it’s all about fun. A few ‘crows have a distinct purpose in life, carrying on as

Rene Bahloo shows off her cats claw creation at the weaving workshop at Kandanga. their forebears did, protecting crops by scaring away the birds. But others are just there to dress up the paddocks and maybe even share the wry humour of the country folk who live in the Mary Valley all year round. It’s how they deal with the seasons of country life – flood, drought and everything in between. And even better, making scarecrows doesn’t cost an arm and a leg! You usually have the

bones of a scarecrow in the shed – a broomstick, a bale of hay and some old clothes. The scarecrow map will be uploaded to Google in the first week of October, so that you can plan your self-drive tour. Jack Ritchie and Mila Duffy centre with their ASM and plaque from Cooroy Scouts, with last years ASM recipients Joel Worrall-Perry (left) and Macklin Beasley (right), holding the shield with the names of Cooroy Scout’s ASM recipients. THE Australian Scout Medallion (ASM) is the highest award in the Scout Section. It is considered the pinnacle of Scouting at this stage. To earn the Australian Scout Medallion a Scout must have participated in a Scout Leadership Course, demonstrated an active leadership role in Scouting and achieved the Adventurer

Cord. It is the culmination of several years of hard work. Since the awards introduction in 2003, only 176 of them have been awarded, thirteen of them to Cooroy Scouts. On the 20th of September, Jack Ritchie and Mila Duffy received their ASM, presented to them by their parents in the presence of District Commissioner, Ken “Roo” Howes and the Cooroy Scout Troop.

Vale: Brenda Shipp (nee Goodchild) 8.6.43 - 14.8.18

BRENDA Jean Shipp was born in Murgon Queensland on the 8th of June 1943. She was the third of six children born to Thomas & Phyllis Muggeridge (nee Goodchild). Brenda’s early childhood was spent on farming land near Murgon where her parents grew grain crops and ran a dairy farm. In 1949 the Murgon property was sold and the family relocated to Cooroy where they bought a dairy and small crop property at Black Mountain. Brenda attended the Black Mountain School and following her schooling years, remained on the family farm helping her parents. At age 18 Brenda travelled to Brisbane to sign up to the Australian Army. Upon returning to Cooroy to arrange her relocation to Sydney she met her

future husband Noel Shipp at a Junior Farmers meeting. Following three years of service as a cook at the Ingleburn Hospital in Sydney. Brenda applied to be discharged to return to Cooroy to marry Noel. They took up residence on their newly acquired small crop property located on the banks of Lake McDonald. It was here they started a family with the births of Ian & Russell, followed three years later by Tracy. Hard times on the land are nothing new to Australian farmers and after a period of time Noel & Brenda decided to sell the family farm with Noel taking full time employment with a local pastoral company, while Brenda continued her farm laboring jobs while raising her family. Some years later Noel & Brenda returned to full time farming on a property at Lawnville Road, Cooroy growing small crops. After a period, relocating to their current home at Black Mountain. Upon retirement Brenda devoted her life to pursuing activities she loved. Looking after her growing family with the births of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Spending time with friends. Tending a large garden of flowers, orchids, vegetables and cactus. Sewing patchwork quilts, knitting, crocheting, camping, travelling Australia and pursuing her passion for V8 motor racing. After being diagnosed and successfully treated for breast cancer in her mid 60’s Brenda also spent time raising money for the Cancer Council. Brenda passed on the 14 August 2018 after a five-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She will be sadly missed. The greatest comfort during our sorrow has been the expressions of sympathy conveyed to us in so many ways. Noel Shipp and family deeply appreciate everyone’s thoughtfulness and thank you all most sincerely.

COOROY RAG

FROM 1914 to 1918 when Eumundi and the surrounding area was just starting to develop and had a population of around 500, 104 local men enrolled to fight for king and country in WW1. Of those 104 men, 20 did not return and Eumundi’s Main Street (now Memorial Drive) and Gridley Street was planted with 20 Memorial Trees each with a plaque which remain to this day to remember them. This year will see the 100th Anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended WW1 on November 11, 1918 at 11am. This day is now known as Remembrance Day and will be commemorated by the Eumundi Historical Association in a number of ways before and on the date including a supper dance reminiscent of the WW1 era. Back in 1918 Eumundi had a ‘Welcome Home Committee’ that held many social functions in the School of Arts hall in honour of local returned soldiers. Many of the returning soldiers took over a year to finally make their way home, and the welcome home functions continued until the end of 1919. In the spirit of the ‘Welcome Home Committee’ in commemorating and celebrating the return of the 84 who survived the war, with many returning to Eumundi, and to mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, the Eumundi Historical Association feel it only fitting to honour these men again with a Supper Dance in the heritage listed School

of Arts hall. The Eumundi School of Arts hall now in its 106th year played a pivotal part in Eumundi’s participation in WW1, with many events held in the hall to raise money for the ‘war effort’ and the WW1 Roll of Honour still takes pride of place in the hall, by the stage for all to see. The Eumundi Historical Association, which is the trustee of the hall for the community, has recently undertaken some major renovations of the hall. With it looking its best, the Association president Donata Page believes ‘it’s time to put on a get together, to not only honour those who returned from WW1, but to also honour the hall, which over its many years has weathered many storms and still remains’. Polish up your dancing shoes and bring out your glad rags to enjoy what promises to be a great evening with some nostalgic old time melodies from the 10 piece Pete Kelly Swing Band, ably supported by singers Melissa Isles and Carl Beck and a fabulous supper is planned by chef Peter Wolfe of Free Ranging Chef included in the ticket price. Tickets are $50, includes supper and entertainment, there will be a licenced bar available, no BYO. More details at www.eumundi historicalassn.org/supper-dance . Tickets are available online at www.ticketebo.com/ eumundisupperdance or Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre at 73 Memorial Drive Eumundi.

Creating Hormonal Harmony FROM puberty, to periods, to menopause – hormones can pose a challenge for many women throughout their lives. You may be all too familiar with symptoms such as painful, heavy or irregular periods, premenstrual mood swings and bloating, hot flushes … and the list goes on. Female hormonal conditions are complex and frequently frustrating for women. While hormonal fluctuations have traditionally been blamed, there is more to this story - many other factors also affect the subtle balance required for optimal hormonal harmony. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. The ups and downs of hormonal symptoms may be related to one of these conditions. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS): includes symptoms of breast tenderness, migraines and mood changes prior to your period. PMS may be linked to lowered progesterone levels and often made worse by stress. Endometriosis and fibroids: women with these conditions often experience heavy, painful periods, pain throughout the month, bloating, and sometimes weight gain. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS): missing periods, facial hair growth, sugar cravings, weight gain and difficulty conceiving are commonly experienced, due to higher than normal testosterone and lower progesterone levels. Menopause: many women suffer from hot flushes, night sweats, and anxiety, as their periods come to a stop. While these conditions are influenced by subtle changes in hormone levels, many other factors also play a role. Some of these factors come from your body - such as inflammation, being overweight, and feeling stressed. The environment you live in can also play havoc with hormones. Tox-

ins are virtually unavoidable and many have hormone-like effects and may negatively affect your hormonal balance. Restoring hormonal balance is key. Herbs and nutrients can address these factors and help to harmonise your hormones. Vitex also known as chaste tree, this traditional herb helps regulate the menstrual cycle, and is often used to help reduce the moodiness associated with PMS. Liquorice and peony: help normalise testosterone levels, reducing excess facial hair, weight gain and promoting fertility in women with PCOS. Rehmannia and zizyphus: have been used to reduce the length and duration of hot flushes in menopause. Magnesium: is beneficial for all women, particularly as many have insufficient dietary intakes of this key mineral. Magnesium also provides relief from mood symptoms, period pain and hot flushes, to name a few. The right food, stress management and your environment all assist in restoring balance too. Eat organic foods to reduce your consumption of added growth promoting hormones (in meats) and pesticides (on fruits and vegetables) that have been linked to hormonal imbalance. Avoid hormone-disrupting chemicals found in plastics by using glassware for storing and reheating food and drinks. Reduce feelings of stress and anxiety with simple breathing exercises. Try breathing in for a count of five, holding your breath for a count of five, and breathing out for a count of five. Repeat for three minutes, twice daily. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in a wide range of health conditions. Where is your pain really coming from? HAVE you ever been to see a physiotherapist for pain in one part of your body and when they treated you, they focused on a completely different area? While this can be a strange experience, it can be even more puzzling when the treatment actually works. So what is going on, shouldn’t pain be treated where it is being felt? When pain is felt at a different location from where the pain is being caused, this is called ‘referred pain’ and is actually more common than you think. Exactly why this happens is a little complicated, and in fact, we don’t yet understand everything about the way that pain is processed. Pain is usually felt when something causes damage to the body, sending an electrical impulse

to the brain. The brain receives this information and process it to make sense of which part of the body the signal is coming from and what kind of pain it is. When the brain thinks that the pain is coming from a different area than where the damage or signal is actually coming from, this creates the phenomenon of referred pain. Sometimes referred pain is easy to explain, such as when a nerve becomes injured or irritated, causing the pain to be felt along the length of the nerve. This often feels like a sharp, burning pain that runs in a strip, along the skin. Other examples of referred pain are more difficult to explain and in some cases seem to defy explanation. Perhaps you have heard about the

Healing and dealing with wounds PROVIDING advice on wound care is a dayto-day occurrence in our LiveLife pharmacies ... here are some helpful wound care hints that we would love to share with you this month! Wounds are generally classified as either an “Abrasion” or an “incised wound.” But what does this mean? • An abrasion means that the surface layer of the skin has been broken. Thin-skinned bony areas - knees, ankles and elbows - are more prone to abrasions than thicker, more padded areas. • Incised wounds are caused by sharp objects, such as knives or shards of glass, slicing into the skin. Depending on the injury, underlying blood vessels can be punctured, leading to significant blood loss. So what are the main first aid points for managing cuts and scrapes? Stop the bleeding, Clean the wound, Apply an antiseptic/antibiotic, Cover the wound, Change the dressing, Get stitches for deep wounds if required, Look for signs of infection.

For the past 100 years, wounds have been allowed to dry out. They have been left open and allowed to heal with the aid of dry dressings. Modern studies have now suggested that drying out the live cells which are trying to seal the wound actually slow healing. I suppose this is understandable when we think about the fact that live cells only live in water. The other complication of dry wound healing is that when a dry dressing is changed, new cells may scab and stick to the old dry gauze. This is certainly not ideal. strange phenomenon of phantom pain where amputees continue to feel pain as though it was in the place where their limbs used to be. Muscular trigger points can also cause referred pain. The mechanism behind this is a bit trickier to understand, but is thought to be explained by tight bands of muscle tissues that cause pain to be felt in predictable patterns around the body. Adding to this, we know that other tissues of the body can cause pain to be felt in a different location, including discs of the spine and internal organs. Many times the internal organs can refer pain in peculiar patterns and this can actually lead to serious illnesses being mistaken for muscular aches and pains. Kidney pain can be felt in the lower back and tragically, some

people fail to recognize that they are having a heart attack because they feel pain in their neck and arm, not in their chest. We also know that not understanding or being afraid of pain can make pain feel stronger. In rare cases, people who have pain in one hand can feel pain just by seeing their other hand moving in a mirror. There are many other fascinating aspects to pain, and understanding how it works is an important part of managing your symptoms. To understand how referred pain may be affecting you, chat to your physiotherapist who can help with any questions. health Cooroy Shoes find feet a happy home

COOROY RAG

IRIS Taylor’s feet found a happy home in the new pair of NAOT shoes she won from Cooroy Shoes and Accessories. Iris suffers from Arthritis in her feet and says she has found relief in the NAOT shoe range, so she was excited to attend the NAOT VIP day at Cooroy Shoes on Friday 14th and she is very happy that her entry on the day won her a pair of her favourite shoes. This is the fourth year that owner Maree Millar has hosted the event and it, “just keeps getting bigger and better”. Comfortable, stylish orthotic based shoes, the NAOT brand has become an international success story since starting in a Kibbutz in Northern Israel in 1942, making simple work shoes and sandals. The key to NAOT’s success is their footbed, which combines a blend of natural latex and a layer of cork designed to mould to the shape of the foot, absorb shock and remove moisture. This is then coated in a high quality, pampering suede. Got your own orthotic? You can remove the footbed and replace it with your own orthotic. Deep toe and heel counters, velcro for adjustability and soft leathers in fashionable colours all make this brand a winner. Wilhelmina Jones, shoe fitter extraordinaire at Cooroy Shoes and Accessories, also recommends brands Klouds, Ziera and Frankie 4 to anyone who is having trouble with their feet. She understands that no one wants to forego style for comfort and has earned a reputation for finding the perfect fitting shoes to meet her customer’s needs. “Special thanks also, to Suncoast Podiatry for lending us Amy. It was great to have such a lovely local podiatrist in-store. And again, we thank Naot

Australia for flying Assaf Danby all the way from Melbourne with his expert first-hand knowledge of the brand,” said Maree. So, if you’re looking for style and needing comfort, drop in to Cooroy Shoes, on Maple Street and see the new range of summer footwear, and while you’re there browse through the handbags, wallets, scarves and range of jewellery.

Meet The Kindness Club! WE would like to introduce you to our kind-hearted club members. Along with our articles and projects, we will include member profiles. The children will share their feelings about kindness and a little about themselves.

Brooklyn – Grade 4 What does kindness mean to you? I like to see kindness spreading because it means our planet is taking steps by steps to be a kinder world. Kindness means a lot to me. The last kind deed you did for someone? I clean the table after dinner so my Mum can put her feet up after work. A kindness shown to you? One day I left my lunch at home and Deb, the tuckshop lady, gave me a free salad wrap. How does kindness make you feel? It makes me feel happy because other people are feeling happy. What else makes you happy? Going shopping with my Mum, seeing my friends, and sleeping in till 12 o’clock! “Little hearts can make a big difference” The Kindness Club would love to hear from you and share your experiences! Chloe & Wendy join the Pomona Ag team POMONA Ag Supplies, welcome new team members Wendy Vono and Chloe Edwards into the ever-thriving business. Since purchasing the store in July this year Barbara, with her husband Stuart, have brought their passion for the land and animals with them. Pomona Ag customers have benefited greatly from their dedication, to not only offering a diverse product range and easier access throughout the store, but also in their genuine interest in their customer’s needs and their willingness to bring that to them. The latest addition to the store is Wendy Vono, who brings with her a wealth of experience in animal care and horticultural training. Wendy has built up her own business in looking after gardens and properties in the local area and has spent many years working in the Nursery industry. She will be instore on Thursdays and Saturdays, so make sure to drop in and pick her mind if you have any gardening queries. Wendy says in the present

Cooroy Legal turns one dry climate, the key to keeping your garden free from heat stress is to mulch, mulch then mulch some more. Also Foliar Feeding is recommended. This is where you mix a liquid fertilizer with water and spray on the leaves. This helps with better nutrient absorption for healthier plants. Chloe has lived in Traveston her entire life and is a student at Cooroy Campus. Chloe works after school and on Saturdays and has a keen interest in her horses, her lit-

tle sister, Emily, and gaining experience in the animal industry. Barbara is also seeking feedback from locals who are experiencing paddock die back, which is affecting a number of local land owners, as the ‘GROW’ company is eager to work on rejuvenation solutions and are hoping to organise information sessions for those impacted. Pomona Ag Supplies , 21 Factory Street opens its doors at 8am Monday to Saturday, and closes 5pm Monday to Fridays and Noon on Saturdays.

COOROY’S newest legal centre is celebrating its first birthday this month. Director of Cooroy Legal Centre Pamela Sweetapple said the last 12 months had been very satisfying as the practice had found its niche in the local community. “We have had a very busy first year, meeting many of the locals and helping them to resolve their legal issues,” she said. “We’re looking forward to the next 12 months.” Ms Sweetapple said all the staff at the practice had enjoyed meeting many of the business people in Cooroy and dealing with their leasing and contractual problems, as well as continuing their work in family law, wills and estates and conveyancing. The practice is now an approved legal aid provider for family law matters, domestic violence and child protection cases. Phone 5447 7637.

HORSE GEAR COOROORA United FC faced of with Beerwah in Saturday’s Grand Final at Maroochydore. Whilst Cooroora were dominant during the season Beerwah were up for the challenge having been victorious in the semi final grinding out a hard fought 1-0 victory earning their place in the 2018 decider. Cooroora in true fashion showed grit and determination eventually overcoming Gympie Diggers 1-0 in extra time in the Preliminary Final. The Grand Final did not disappoint with the score locked at 0-0 at half time. Eventually a great cross from the side-line and finish from Wilson Peerce sealed the victory 1-0 for Cooroora. A great season for both Cooroora and Beerwah. Congratulations CUFC on a well deserved premiership!

Pirates Women’s team are recruiting! 2018 has been a big year for Women’s Rugby League. Not only with the first WNRL competition kicking off, but also for the first Women’s Rugby League competition on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, with 5 teams - Noosa, Caboolture, South Burnett, Kawana and Nambour. Caboolture taking out the title of Maudsley Excavation Grand Final Winners. With the 2019 season just around the corner the Noosa Pirates Women’s team are recruiting! They have kicked started their preseason training and have got a number on new women coming through giving it a go, but they still want new and hidden talents to come and try it out. One of the original team members, Stacey Neal said “I grew up playing touch football but never considered playing league until this year, I was shy and had a hard time getting in to the rhythm of an entirely new sport but by the end of the season I was so excited to step out on to the field! The friendships I’ve made through the Noosa team are ones I’ve never had before, so much love and encouragement from the women have made me a better player and I can’t wait for next year to get back out there and smash the other teams!” Noosa Pirates Club Secretary Jess Goldthorpe said “Our ladies team has the full support of the Club and Committee, and the biggest fanfare not only from the Men’s teams in the Club, but all the supporters (big and small), who came to watch games rain, hail or shine” The Noosa Pirate Women’s preseason training is held Tuesday & Thursday at 5.30pm at Pirate Park in Tewantin. So, if you are turning 17 or older, get your boots out of the closet or go buy a set for an awesome experience with the girls! Mothers, do not be discouraged, bring the littlies or biggies along to watch you train and play.

Softall Sign-on NEW and experienced softball players from 4 years to adults are invited to sign on for the coming Noosa softball season on Wednesday 10 October at the club grounds in Tewantin. The summer season starts on Saturday 13 October, with softball played at the Noosa fields every Saturday for beginner to advanced male and female players. “Little League for boys and girls aged from 4 to 10 years is a fun and safe place for them to learn basic ball and batting skills, or improve the skills they already have,” Richard said. “There’s mixed boys and girls competition for Under 13s, 15s and 17s, and seniors play social men’s and women’s matches. Noosa’s three softball clubs, Dodgers, Slammers and Redsox provide mid-week training for beginners to advanced players. Team shirts and paying equipment are provided. Sign-on for all ages is at the Noosa District Sports Complex, Butler Street, Tewantin (behind Drysdales Funerals) on Wednesday 10 October from 3.30pm5pm. Just come along to sign up or try it out, or for information email noosasoftball@gmail.com. Also follow Noosa Softball on Facebook at www.facebook.com/noosadsoftball

Dolphins dive into success COOROY Dolphins Swimming Club attended the Kawana Waters Swim Carnival on Saturday. The club took home 6 medals and loads of personal best times. Cooroy Dolphin Sophie Jansen swum PBs all day, some more than 6 secs and almost broke a pool record! ‘I enjoyed racing in the 50m pool today and all the other clubs are so friendly. I was happy with my new medals. I got a 1 st, 2nd and 3 rd. It was a really fun day swimming with the odd handstand and cartwheel thrown in while I was waiting.”

Fellow swimmer Jessica Broadhead said she “enjoyed having lots more competition as there is heaps of kids in my age group and I had lots of fun. I am really enjoying pushing myself and today I got heaps of PBS!” The Cooroy Dolphins are having a Come & Try night on Wednesday

ON Sunday 9 September, 48 golfers participated in a 9-hole Ambrose tournament at Cooroy Golf Club sponsored by Saw & Mill Sports Club in Cooroy. After a shotgun start and 9 holes in perfect conditions, we adjourned to the bowling club where we were very well looked after with refreshments and finger food. Congratulations to the winners on the day - Paddi Gannon and Steve Parker. They were closely followed by Craig Ryan and Wayne Brogden with Aileen Morton and David Tink coming third. This is going to be a 3monthly event, so get your teams together for the next one. Thank you Saw & Mill for a great day and your support and sponsorship

10th of October at 5.30pm. We encourage anyone who wants to try out swim club to come along. It is a FREE event open to kids of all ages and abilities. For more information Contact the Cooroy Dolphins on Facebook or email cooroy dolphins@gmail.com

Come & try sailing IF you want to get into a sport that the whole family can do together, think about sailing. It is never to late to learn. Whether you want to sail alone, with a partner or even with the whole family, there will be a boat to suit your needs. We are blessed in our beautiful region to have one of Australia’s great sailing venues and one of the best volunteer only run sailing clubs in Australia. Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club is

situated at Boreen Point, only 15 minutes from Noosa. Whilst being a family orientated club with sail training and two races run every Sunday, we also

hold regattas and State and National titles during the season. Charlie Hacker, the club coach, is a local legend who has been teaching juniors

and seniors to sail for well over 30 years. On Friday and Saturday 28th and 29th September, Charlie is running a two day Try Sailing clinic. During these two days, you will learn to rig a boat and be taken out with experienced sailors who will instruct, guide and give you a chance to have a go yourself. The cost of the two day Try Sailing clinic is $50 per person for non-club mem-

bers. However, if you wish to join the club with a 12 month, affordable membership, the price is only $10 per person. Club membership also entitles you to ongoing free sail training every Sunday morning and use of the club boats while learning. For enquiries, phone Charlie Hacker on Ph 0427548527 or see www.lcsc.org.au or just turn up.
