Grand Final Winners 2013 - Pomona Demons POMONA/Cooroy Demons made it two premierships in three years when they travelled to Landsborough to take on Bribie Island in the SEQAFL Div 4 grand final on Saturday. The young senior demons, with an average age of just 21 years old, emerged triumphant after a belligerent and aggressive performance 12.15.87 to 5.9.39. The game concluded a season on the back of an 11 game winning streak. In a time when sport has been enmeshed in controversy across many codes, the family orientated Demons progressed through the 2013 season in an unassuming manner, as only the young can. The Dee’s side consisted of 3 sets of brothers, two father/son combinations and one set of cousins. On top of that, all but two players on the list of 22 came from either their junior ranks or are the sons of former players. In a time in sport where loyalty has for the most part been passed over in favor of financial gain, this side epitomises the benefits of being raised in a small town environment and the joys of mateship The win must also be seen as a yet another fine achievement for rookie coach Alex Mckinnon, who assumed this role after a stellar playing career for the Demons, which included seven seasons as club captain and twice being named club champion. Mckinnon was also a member of the Demons long awaited first flag in 2011.

He was supported off field by Team Manager Travis Hartshorn, while Bill Magin and Scott Pettigrove provided tactical initiative. All four of these men are life members of the club as well as Sunshine Coast AFL Hall of Fame recipients, further demonstrating the loyalty and long term commitment of personnel, this proud club enjoys. Blake Magin, Lanze Magin and 2013 premiership captain Shaun Maxfield aslo provided great leadership and were an important part of the combined ‘Brain Trust’. Best Players on the day in a comprehensive team display over 4 quarters were Lanze Magin, Billy Mahony, Dan Maxfield ,Kyle Gunn, Scotty Stiefler, Al Mahony, Blake Magin, Ty VanSanten, Shaun Maxfield , Nick Woolley and Wayne Mahony while Kyle Collett held Bribie Islands league leading goalkicking recipient, J.Maher goalless. Scotty Stiefler recieved the League award for best afield in the Grand Final. A replay of the game was shown at the Pomona Hotel for players and supporters on the Wednesday with host/cameraman Brian Doyle keeping the momentum going with good food and cold beer. Goal kickers on the day were: Kyle (Kegsy) Gunn 3, Ty Van Santen 3 and one apiece to Shaun Maxfield, Micheal Daddow, Al Mahony, Scotty Steifler, Harry White and Lanze Magin.

news Bank commits to Xmas in Cooroy for another 3 years

COOROY RAG

EVERYONE loves a parade, especially one that rocks! One of the highlights of the annual Christmas in Cooroy celebrations is the Street Parade which makes its way up Maple Street and back and attracts over 5,000 people into Cooroy. The Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has once again boosted Cooroy’s celebrations by committing $21,000 or $7,000 per year for the next 3 years. That’s big news for a community event that had humble beginnings only nine years ago and is now regarded as one of the real highlights on the Festive Season calendar on the Sunshine Coast. But you know you are on a winner when there are over 40 businesses and community groups that get together to celebrate. Christmas in Cooroy is being held on Saturday, 7 December this year with the Bendigo Bank

Street Parade commencing at 4.00pm. The theme for this year’s event is “Rock ’n’ Roll” and the team at the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank like many other businesses around Cooroy is already busily planning their float. Event manager, Danielle Taylor says this year’s parade theme is sure to bring out the fun in everyone. “The Bendigo Bank Street Parade is a great spectacle and thousands of people line the streets to watch the floats. The best float award is hotly contested with previous winners including Spiritus, Cooroy Rag and Cooroy State School who took out the title last year. Who knows which amazing entry will win this year? One thing is certain – it will be a colourful spectacle that no lover of Rock ‘n’ Roll will want to miss, “Danielle said.

“The Cooroy Community Bank branch’s sponsorship has been integral to the success of the event for many years now, but to have them support us for the next 3 years for such a generous amount is just incredible! There’s so much that goes into planning a free community event such as Christmas in Cooroy every year and it simply couldn’t be achieved without sponsorship from local businesses,” she added. “Christmas in Cooroy has grown each year and so have the associated costs for everything from insurance to rides. The event is jointly hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club of Cooroy and there are approximately 30 sponsors and a host of volunteers that make the event a success,” she said. Other major sponsors that have already agreed

to sponsor this year’s event include Ricon Contractors who decorate the beautiful Christmas Tree in Maple Street that is switched on in its own ceremony on Friday 6 December. They are

joined by Cooroy Hotel who sponsor the bar area in Apex Park and the Poet’s Breakfast, Cooroy Rag who provide advertising and fund the free rides in Apex Park, Cooroy Guardian Pharmacy who sponsor the photo competition, David Lafferty of Hinternoosa who sponsors the free face painting, Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group who sponsor The Great Santa Race and Stellar Conveyancing who sponsor the volunteer tshirts. Sunshine Coast Council has also provided $5,000 funding through their Festive Season Strategy. There are still sponsorship opportunities (cash and inkind) available by contacting Event Manager, Danielle Taylor on 0403 023 802 or advertising @cooroy.com.au. Love Cooroy? Like Cooroy! IF you love Cooroy than get onto Facebook and like the new Cooroy Facebook page, “Cooroy - Heart of Noosa Country” (www.facebook.com/ Cooroy)! The new page highlights all the wonderful things that Cooroy has to offer to both visitors and locals alike. “We’ve got so much that happens in Cooroy on a daily basis and we know the calendar and news sections on the Cooroy website are really popular, so the next logical step was to have a Facebook page. We’ll be posting all sorts of information onto Cooroy’s Facebook page including special offers from local businesses, updates from local community and sporting groups

and great entertainment and events,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Danielle Taylor. “As well as being a great communication tool, the idea behind the Cooroy Facebook page is the philosophy of supporting your local community and buying local. It will also give businesses and community groups some exposure on the social media platform as a lot don’t have a Facebook page yet so we’ll be a bit of a starting platform for them. And those that do have a Facebook page don’t miss out because we can do cross promotions with them also.”

Pedestrians finally get safe crossing A NEW footbridge across a creek at Cooroy will mean pedestrians no longer have to dice with danger. Until now, residents walking to and from Cooroy’s CBD along Mary River Road were forced to walk on the roadway, in the vehicle lane, in order to negotiate the creek. Council’s new footbridge means they can now safely cross without forcing cars to swerve around them. Division 12 Councillor Tony Wellington said it was the culmination of a long-held desire. “I noted the lack of safe pedestrian access on Mary River Road during my election campaign,” he said. (see Noosa News article, April 13, 2012, p7) “So when I got elected, it was one of the first projects that I approved for funding using my Councillor divisional allocation. “I guess it’s an indication of how slow bureaucracy can be that it has taken more than a year to get completed. But there were many design considerations, including the option of adding a pathway to the existing vehicle bridge. Council also had to deal with the State

The Cooroy Facebook page is an initiative of the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Inc which has applied for a grant through Sunshine Coast Council grants program for the project.

Government because they are the head of power over the waterway. The design had to be fish-friendly. “I was amazed that a pedestrian access was not provided when the nearby roundabout and heavy vehicle bypass were constructed. Residents were told in 2010 that a footbridge would be included when the roundabout was built. But the promised footbridge never materialised. On asking why, one resident was told by Council staff that funding was no longer available. “Of course all this preceded my time on Council. So one of my earliest tasks after being elected was to find the money to get the footbridge built. As there was no allocation in the capital works program, the only way to fund it was to use my discretionary divisional funds.” “I have already had positive feedback from the Cooroy community about the bridge, including its sleek modern design. And I am grateful to all the Council staff who helped bring this project to fruition.”

Not long now … be brave! The target is getting close, the campaign really getting hot, Most voters are still confused, they don’t know who from what. The media has driven us mad, bombarding our suffering ears, With candidates and commentators, almost bringing us to tears. The air is thick with politicians, experts, and professors, Solemnly, giving us their forecasts, when in truth they are only guessers. Weeks of so-called leaders’ debates, boring everybody’s socks off, The only treatment for that is to turn the idiot box off. We’ve had the personal attacks, the revival of some ancient scandal, The allegations, the heated outbursts, which some find hard to handle. The furore after one candidate was told she had sex appeal, The allegations about some party doing a preference deal. When it’s all over, come the post mortems, who is going to get the blame, The victory speeches, and the traditional getting-even game. The party members will hasten, to get their expected rewards, The overseas postings, the cushy jobs, the seats on company boards. The promises will be put away until the next election, When they’ll be produced again, a sort of political resurrection. Things will change of course, and luckily they do, In spite of the politicians, and all their bally-hoo. There always will be changes, with natural lows and highs, Remember if nothing ever changed, there’d be no butterflies. Jim Dunstan

AS the financial world continues to stand firm as it faces the ongoing pressures of the current crisis a buzz saying is emerging...Savings is the new credit! Many economists would acknowledge that the world financial system spiralled downwards when credit became a way of sourcing a lifestyle rather than putting savings aside for a lifestyle. Past generations had little or no access to such creatures as credit cards, pay day loans, overdrafts or even personal loans. As for going to the bank for a home loan, during some generations, this would only happen if you had at least a 50% deposit and had been a customer of the bank for sometime. So how have past generations coped given they too experienced such crisis as The Great Depression and “the recession we had to have”? Past generations didn’t have the world at its finger tips via their computers or ability to access their bank account with a card and not just in their own country but world wide. Above all past generations had the attitude that you saved for the things that you wanted or you simple went without. As the world shows signs of coming out of this crisis, products such as debit cards, credit cards that reward the user for reducing balances, Christmas Club passbook account and various types of savings accounts are being considered more and more by consumers. To achieve savings relies on being able to budget your income over your necessary expenses and various budgeting tools are available these days to assist consumers with identifying necessary expenses. The key is to write everything down that you spend during the day for a period and then commence identifying the items that can be

reduced or eliminated all together to find extra income to put aside as savings. Another key factor is to only use your savings for the necessary expenses. Most banks will be able to provide you with the guidance, budgeting tools and products that will enable you to jump on board the trend that is emerging and have savings for your life style requirements. If you have any questions on how to start your savings plan or would like to discuss any other banking matter, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

Laugh at life An African pygmy visiting England, went to his first cricket match. On his return, he described it to his witch doctor: “It was a beautiful sunny day,” he said. “And a big crowd of people had gathered around this big field of grass. In the middle was a thin strip of mowed grass, and at either end there were three sticks pushed into the ground. A man in a long overcoat came out with two men in sweaters, and he tossed something silvery into the air. They then went off, and on came eleven men in seaters and white pants. One of them had pads on his legs, and wore great big gloves. Then out came two men with padded legs, and small gloves, and holding big sticks. They took position at either end of the strip, and another man came running towards one of them and threw a red ball at the man holding the stick. And at that very moment, it started to pour. Those white men sure know how to make it rain!!”

THE Cooroy Area Residents Association (CARA) general meeting held on Thursday 15 August again attracted a packed house. The main topic of discussion was the proposed poultry farm at Top Forestry Road Cooroy. The applicant had been scheduled to present his views to the community, but unfortunately gave late notice that he was unable to attend. Sunshine Coast Regional Council officer, Kerri Coyle, Coordinator, Planning Applications (North) kindly stepped into the breach and fielded a range of tricky questions from the community.Present were opponents of the proposal who had concerns including the suitability of the use in a biosphere, impacts on the environment particularly the waterways in the steep country in the area, suitability of Top Forestry Road and other roads to service the trucks, traffic hazards and health impacts. Also present were a number of farmers concerned that if they cannot farm in rural areas, where can they go to ensure food production. It emerged that many of those present were ‘guilty’ – the farmers had created the lots and people chose to

live on those lots which are, of course, in a rural area where agricultural activities are one of the intended uses.Paul Summers of CARA’s management committee who chaired the lively debate observed that “There was a lot of passion in the room on both sides of the discussion. While I wouldn’t suggest that anyone changed their mind as a consequence of listening to the debate, I believe that everyone saw that there was another side to the story. This is not an easy decision for the Council.”The application has reached the decision stage; however the Council has sought additional information from the applicant. The applicant has in turn extended the period in which the Council is required to decide the application. At this stage it is expected the decision will be taken at the Council’s October meeting. For further information regarding CARA go to www.caracooroy.com and for the development application go to www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au click the PD Online link and insert the application number: MCU12/0184.

THE Mary Valley is turning tradition on its ear this year with the annual Scarecrow Festival about to kick off on September 14. The scary fellows will hang around until October 18. Registrations opened on August 19 and the stuffed figures will be popping up on country roads and busy streets from September 14. Categories are Open, Traditional and Child (5-15yrs). You can choose to make a traditional ‘crow, or enter something extraordinary in the artistic category. There is also a children’s category for five to 15-year-old scarecrow creators. If you have never made a ‘crow before, here’s some starting tips. You can make a simple “skeleton” from two wooden pieces like broomsticks by binding them together to form a cross. Use a pillowcase or a pumpkin or similar for a head (remember that a pumpkin will shrink over time). Paint a face and put head on the top of the cross.

For hands and legs put a shirt over your cross-shaped frame and use gloves for hands or tie the ends of the sleeves so the stuffing will stay inside. Put the pants on and leave enough wood at the bottom of the leg to stake your scarecrow in the ground. Traditionally stuffing is made of straw or hay, but you can use clothing, plastic bags or even newspapers. Stuff the pants first, tuck the shirt in, button and zip the pants. Tie rope or twine around the waist to act as a belt. Stuff the shirt arms first, then the rest of the torso. Then accessorise to your heart’s content. Find out more by emailing info@scarecrows.org.au or visit www.scarecrows.org.au You can pick up a registration form from the following locations: Conondale Shop, Kenilworth Information Centre, Ridges Shop at Poulson Road, Mary Valley Traders at Imbil, Kandanga Information Centre.

chance for a ride to all comers. “You could be the lucky winner of an hour-long Harley Davidson motorcycle ride through the Hinterland” President Lyn said. “The Rotary Club of Cooroy will hold a raffle with its monthly regular sausage sizzle outside Cooroy IGA on the first Saturday of each month.” The next sausage siz-

zle is on 7 September. Raffle tickets will be sold for $2 each or 6 for $10 and drawn at the end of the sausage sizzle at 1.00pm by a well known local identity.” President Lyn explained that “Fund-raising initiatives such as the Sausage Sizzle and Raffle assist the Rotary Club to make even greater contributions to the local community and the local support the Club receives is much appreciated.” The Rotary Club meets at the Cooroy CWA Hall each Monday evening 6.30pm- 7.30pm with an optional dinner at the RSL afterwards. There is a strong Guest Speaker Program and the Club welcomes visitors to its meetings. For further information, contact President Lyn Hodges on email: president@cooroy rotary.org.au or Membership Director Bob Ward on 0412 715 461.

Lost, but Not Forgotten

WORLD War II and Korea Day will be commemorated at Cooroy and Pomona Sub Branch on Saturday 14 September, with a luncheon commencing at 12.00. Cost for non WWII and Korea veterans will be $35 per person, the bus will be available. Bookings are essential. Phone 5447 6131. Local Cooroy and Pomona RSL Sub Branch member Stan Phillips remembers his friends and comrades who lost their lives during the Korean War. He visited South Korea several years ago and recalls a dinner which was held in memory of the fallen. The guest speaker was the owner of Samsung Electronics who was actually a colonel during the war. During his speech he recalled “I looked over the hill and a short distance away, saw a group of Aussie soldiers. I thought to myself, they won’t be there in the morning because they will be overrun by the Chinese Army. To my surprise, they were still there and I was amazed. I didn’t know whether they were good soldiers or bad soldiers or just too plain lazy to run away! However, I’m proud to have known every one of you”. Last year, well known member of the Sub Branch Bill Edwards was making a trip to South Korea. Stan requested that he visit the gravesites of his lost friends. He was very grateful when Bill returned with some photos. Now Stan knows that these brave soldiers are lost but not forgotten.

A ‘super’ way to get insurance cover

Providing Total Business Care Principal: Seb Vecchio

services include

By Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management WHETHER you’re starting a family or have a mortgage to pay, it’s important to take out insurance, so that you’re covered in case something happens. And if you’re heard about buying personal insurance through your super, you may be wondering whether it’s a good idea or whether there are drawbacks. Insuring the smart way: If you’re working, you may have some personal insurance cover in your super fund. If so, it is probably the default level of cover offered by the fund and may not account for your personal circumstances. Insurance cover in super typically pays a benefit if the super account holder dies or becomes totally and permanently disabled. Sometimes, employers also organise for income protection insurance to be included in their corporate super plan for their employees. Once you’ve collected information on what insurance you have now, we can help you work out whether you need additional insurance, what type of insurance is right for you, how much extra insurance cover you may need and the best insurance provider for you. What cover is available in super? • Life insurance pays a lump sum if you die, which can help your family pay off the mortgage and other immediate debts, and can be invested to provide for the ongoing needs of your family. • Income protection pays a percentage (generally up to 75%) of your regular monthly income if you can’t work due to sickness or injury, to help you and your family pay the bills. • Total and permanent disablement cover pays a lump sum if you are unable to work ever again, due to being totally and permanently disabled, which can help pay for medi-

cal and rehabilitation costs. The case for insurance in super: • In some cases, holding insurance through super can be cheaper, because the trustee of the super fund can negotiate lower premium rates in its policy with the insurer, due to the number of members in the fund taking out cover. • There may be a tax advantage, because you can pay for your premiums using pre-tax income. • It helps with cash flow, as you don’t have to pay premiums out of your take-home pay. • It’s easy to manage, because premiums are automatically deducted from your super account balance. • Some funds automatically accept you for cover without checking your health or finances. …and the case against: • Using your super to pay for insurance premiums may affect your retirement savings balance. • The range of policies and level of cover available may be more limited. • If for example, you move jobs or take an extended period of leave, you may need to monitor your existing super fund balance regularly to ensure you have enough money to pay for premiums so you don’t lose your insurance cover. • Some beneficiaries may need to pay tax on some benefits received on your death. • You can nominate who you would like to receive your superannuation benefit (including any life insurance benefits) when you die. However, unless you make a binding nomination, it is ultimately the trustee who decides who will receive your benefit, although the trustee will consider your nomination when making its decision.

• It could take longer to receive your insurance benefits, as the insurer pays the benefit to the fund trustee, who then distributes it to you or your beneficiaries. And there may be more stringent conditions of release for disability benefits. Best of both worlds: As well as protecting your wealth, you’ll also need to think about tax implications and planning your estate. For some people, holding insurance both in and outside super is the suitable solution, but whether this is right for you will depend on your personal circumstances.

CAROLINE Holderness is the new owner of Wildflower Fashion. Originally from the UK, where all her retail fashion experience was gained by running her own shops, Caroline has lived in Cooroy for the past seven years. “Fashion has always been my passion and I have missed it over the last few years, so I’m really exited about Wildflower,” said Caroline. “It is a lovely shop and I plan to make a few changes by adding a few new labels, lots of fashion accessories including jewellery, bags, scarves hats etc. and I’m also aiming to cater to all age groups from 30 plus. “I will also be giving the shop a bit of a face lift over the next few months including a new colour scheme and branding, and I look forward to meeting new and existing customers, so please call in and say hello,” said Caroline. The shop is bursting with the colours of the new season, with new stock arriving regularly and Caroline said she is delighted by the great response so far from the locals.

Director, Diana Markovits and Teaching Assistant Angie Hargie at our temporary new entrance via the railway carpark on Maple Street. EXCITEMENT is in the air at the Cooroy Community Kindergarten, as work on the long awaited extension and renovations begin. The feeling of relief follows what feels like years of anticipation and preparation. Long serving Director, Diana Markovits, is thrilled to finally have some major improvements done to enhance the iconic Kindergarten. “Things will be a little hectic around here for a few weeks initially, but we expect minimal impact to the delivery of our teaching program with majority of works being completed outside of our general operating hours and during the upcoming holiday period.” Diana said, “and the children are all very excited to follow the progress through strategically placed peep holes!” The $200,000.00 renovation will see a 5 metre extension to the northern end of the building, along with a complete refurbishment internally and the removal of all asbestos within the premises. Local builder, Gary Dean, of Complete Coastal Constructions has been

contracted to carry out the works. The works are only possible due to the one-off Renovation and Refurbishment Grant Program offered to Queensland Kindergartens by the Queensland Government mid-2012. Their aim is to enhance existing kindergarten facilities throughout the state to support participation of all eligible children through the ongoing delivery or expansion of quality kindergarten programs in addition to complementing the implementation of the National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education and Care. President, Soraya McLean stated “Through the persistence and dedication of passionate committee members, we are very excited to finally commence works after such a long process. It will ensure that the Kindergarten remains a wonderful asset to Cooroy and surrounding Communities well in to the future and I look forward to sharing with everyone at our official opening in 2014.” Works are scheduled to be completed during the Christmas holiday period.

DISCOUNTS FOR SENIOR CARD HOLDERS

IN yet another example of the community working together with local police I am able to report that a 36 year old Childers man has been arrested and charged with the Break and Enter of a Cooroy Business after some excellent investigative work by the Cooroy Police. The early arrest occurred on the same day as the offence occurred and was made possible by the community reporting suspicious behaviour leading to swift action by police in locating stolen goods from the unlawful entry offence. The early arrest more than likely stopped other offences from being committed on other premises in the town so the police and the community can once again pat themselves on the back for such a good result. I have previously reported that sometimes the smaller communities can be lulled into a false sense of security thinking that the more major crimes only occur in the larger communities. This of course, is not the case, which was again highlighted last week with the attempted armed hold up of a West Cooroy business when two offenders, one of whom was allegedly brandishing a knife attempted to rob the business and flee. Again, swift action by Cooroy Police apprehended one of the offenders in Eumundi shortly after the offence and the second offender was arrested after a short police pursuit in Coolum. Both men have been charged with offences related to this incident with both due to appear in court in the near future. Business owners should always seek to minimise cash holdings at all times and introduce a drop safe system and seek to bank on a daily basis. In matters such as this, a good description of the offender(s) and any associated vehicle are very im-

portant and the quick apprehension of the alleged offenders in this case was made possible by a very good description of the suspects and the vehicle including a registration number. For information on how to make your business a less attractive target of thieves please contact the Cooroy Police on 5442 5030 or the Sunshine Coast Crime Prevention Unit on 5475 2412. In the past six weeks there has been seven drink drivers dealt with by Cooroy police which is very disappointing given the fact that it is so well known that police put a high priority on getting drink drivers off our roads. With more than one drink driver per week being detected in Cooroy it’s timely to remind drivers not to risk the consequences and to catch the courtesy bus that all of our licensed premises run for there patrons wishing to have a drink without having to worry about driving home. It has also been reported that door to door workmen/salesmen are still operating in the area selling their services for tree lopping and similar work. Whilst not all workmen going door to door are dodgy, members of the community need to be aware that some are and to take firm measures to ensure they are not caught up in a scam. Can I suggest that all qualifications are thoroughly checked and you ask to see proper identification to know who you are dealing with. Ask for a written quote and time to compare the quote with industry standards either via the phone or internet and once a price is set and the agreed work done do not succumb to any form of standover tactics to try and up the price. If you are pressured in anyway simply say you are not interested and walk away. In some previous incidents, some of these

door to door salesmen have been linked to thefts due to them entering properties under the pretence of seeking work so please keep an eye on your properties and also your neighbour’s properties and report suspicious behaviour to the police. Remember that Registration details of suspect vehicles is gold to the police which generally allows us to track down offenders so always seek to write car rego’s down just in case it becomes relevant later.

news Cooroy Cruise and Travel under new ownership

COOROY RAG

BORN and bred Noosa girl, Natalie Cherry has taken over ownership of Cooroy Cruise and Travel. The agency, which last year relocated from Emerald Street to Garnet street has been operating for more than 30 years. Natalie is the perfect person to take over this agency having lived in Noosa for over 30 years and operating as a travel agent in the region for 17 years. The agency, which was formally Cooroy Travel, is probably the longest operating travel agency in the region. This is one of the main reasons Natalie bought the agency to work as a sister store to Noosa Cruise and Travel, located in Noosaville. Although Natalie bought the business several months ago, she has now finalised all licensing and ensured the office is covered under the TCF (Travel compensation Fund) to ensure clients safety and security when booking with their local agency, something that Natalie says is a serious

risk as this is not guaranteed when booking on the internet. Her expertise and experience will be a major benefit to the area for those looking to make their leisure or business travel arrangements. Things that the consumer doesn’t think about, like long standing relationships with travel companies and airlines, are a huge advantage to have. Her destination experience includes: Africa, South America, China, Papua New Guinea, Asia, Europe, Pacific, India, Morocco, Japan, America, Various cruising such as Azamara, Orion &, Seabourn. The core values that Natalie stands for, such as customer service, will be evident if you visit the new staff in the new office. Her passion for personalised service is the reason for her success and why she says ‘Our reputation is your guarantee’. Natalie is proud to see both offices thriving with a strong staff of 8 and a combined travel experience of over 60 years. The staff work as a team to look after customers from both offices. Still actively involved in Noosa Cruise and Travel, she now has Cooroy born and bred girl ,Veronica Baillie, managing the Noosa office. Veronica with over 10 years’ experience says, “Working as a team benefits our staff and clients. We like to know that all our clients are getting the best of our combined experience and everyone is onboard to help each other”. The staff at Noosa and Cooroy Cruise and Travel are well travelled themselves in a range of different holidaying types from independent to group travel. Veronica is currently in Chile, having recently been on safari to Tanzania. She is now planning a trek with The Gorillas in Uganda. Emily has travelled recently to the Caribbean, Egypt and Turkey and Michelle has holidayed the Mexican Riviera and has returned from a French River Cruise.

They are happy to help with all types of holiday and corporate itinerary planning. Cruising is just a “drop in the ocean” of the travel advice they have on offer. Although they do all facets of travel with the recent fluctuations in the dollar, now more than ever, cruising is representing incredible value. Nowhere else can you find a holiday that will include accommodation, transport from port to port, meals and entertainment, eliminating much of the need to budget for most daily expenses. As cruise lines continually expand their fleets and branch out into newer and more exciting destinations, there is a cruise holiday on offer to suit everyone’s needs. Coming into the earlybird season where airlines offer incredible discounted and packaged deals on airfares, now is the perfect time to start exploring all the holiday options so visit the stores to find out more. Affiliations with American Express presents clients with the opportunity to use points towards their holiday arrangements and membership with Cruise Co earns their clients Qantas frequent flyer points on most cruise bookings. Such affiliations, along with memberships with many other major cruise wholesale providers, helps bring Cruise Sale, Natalie’s dedicated online cruise business, to the forefront of discounted cruise deals. Never one to rest, Natalie is already looking for her next project, which is currently developing a specialised area for independent travellers, taking advantage of discounted and eliminated single supplements for those travelling on their own. If you are interested in this or anything travel please get in touch with her 5447 7088. She is very happy to help and looking forward to giving and receiving support from the locals of the hinterland.

Helping Queenslanders for 30 years by Carol Watkins, Deputy Local Controller, Sunshine Coast North THE last few months have been keeping us very busy even though storm season is over for now. Events are always big for us during the winter months and many a Saturday or Sunday sees us assisting community groups with parking of vehicles, and manning of road barriers. Every Sunday we have people at the Noosa Farmers’ Markets and in addition to that, this winter we were active at Cooroy Fusion, the Steiner School’s annual event, the District Cross Country Event at Kin Kin State School, the Noosa State High 50th Anniversary, Anzac Day in Cooroy and Tewantin, and Floating Land at Boreen Pt. King of the Mountain is com-

ing up soon as is the Noosa Festival of Water and the International Car Rally. Unfortunately, road traffic crashes are still occurring, and we still attend to those when asked to by the Police or Fire Service. In April we were invited to take part in a mock Forensic Land Search assisting our local police demonstrate to an International Police Convention how these are undertaken. We were delighted to be a part of this but were amused when members of the NYPD were quite concerned that prison inmates were allowed to actually walk around unsupervised, and even manage and control such a serious operation. Of course, in the US, prisoners wear orange jumpsuits, but

luckily our local police service quickly enlightened them! Earlier this year, we took delivery of a mobile sandbagging machine. This is an expensive piece of machinery, which we were able to purchase because of donations received over many years and so we thank you, our community, for your support. Frock up for the FORMAL Tips for preparing for the school formal The Year 12 school formal and schoolies week probably occupies more of your thoughts during your final year at school than getting a good OP score. As the mother of two former graduates, here’s a couple of tips I’ve learnt which, hopefully, will help put things in perspective and ensure the night is memorable (in a good way). For the girls, the formal is all about the dress, for the boys, the formal is all about the girls. So girls, you can opt for classic elegance, or choose to make a statement. This is your night, let yourself shine. If you feel confident, you’ll have a great time. If you feel uncomfortable and self-conscious in what you’re wearing you won’t. And there’s no need to spend a fortune because, trust me, you will never wear that dress again. All the good intentions of cutting it off and turning it into a cocktail dress will never happen. The “future you” will one day stumble across it in your wardrobe, try and squeeze it on and wonder how on earth you ever thought you were fat back then. Oh, sorry, maybe that’s just me. Another piece of advice is not to go overboard on the hair spend because if I know my teenagers, you can bet that at some stage during the night, your friend will be holding it back while you vomit Jagermeister into a stranger’s garden. And as for shoes, I’ve seen so many beautiful girls with beautiful frocks ruin the whole look by being unable to walk in their 8 inch heels. Again, comfort means confidence and confidence equals a good time. Make sure you get lots of photos with your mates because once school’s finished you’ll miss those faces you’re used to seeing every day. And most of all … enjoy the night, make memories. Your days of the old school yard are finally over.

THE school formal is probably one of the most major and much anticipated events of your final year of high school. Parents have lamented that the preparations are much akin to planning a wedding, especially for the girls, so with only a couple of months to go, now is the time to start planning. Ensure that you’re organised way ahead of time and have budgeted for all of the expenses.

Co-operative support for MV growers A GROUP of keen growers, interested in establishing a network of support for Mary Valley farmers, gathered recently in Kandanga Hall, to officially form the Mary Valley Country Harvest Co-operative. Their aim is to help farms become more efficient and easier to run and therefore more profitable. To do this, they believe a collaborative approach to distribution, purchasing, marketing, and facilities are necessary. The enthusiasm for locally grown, quality food means the group can strengthen and grow existing relationships with Sunshine Coast and local markets, restaurants and food outlets. The idea is through an organised, collaborative approach to production in order to maintain supply of large orders, reduce gluts and shortages and help spread the risk. Training and education feature strongly within the Cooperative’s aims. They sight opportunities to offer support and training, targeting new landholders to the region, whilst also offering mentoring by existing farmers, familiar with the soils and diversity of the valley. A cooperative approach also means bulk purchasing power, shared farm equipment and shared storage facilities. The question of quality assurance was raised in order that time spent building relationships not be put at risk by poor management of standards. A standards system will be implemented by the group similar to current food standards to avoid these problems occurring. The group already has the support of the Mary Valley Country Flavours certification program which promotes “Get local”. The brand maintains food has been grown in the Mary Valley while highlighting the quality and diversity of food grown here. The group seems set to make their mark in supporting farmers at a time when fruit trees continue to be bulldozed as farms are considered no longer viable. For more information about the MVC Harvest Cooperative please contact Elaine on 0459 225 399 or email dagungrowersmarket@gmail.com

IN early September, selected year 7 students from Pomona State School will join thousands of other students across Australia to focus their knowledge and passion for the environment during the 2013 “Target Kids Teaching Kids Week”. Through the use of comedy, songs, quizzes, rap, plays and experiments, students will be teaching each other about environmental issues such as climate change, water, waste, conservation, energy, habitat destruction, population and pollution. This extraordinary educational event will be held at Lake Kawana on September 4th and 5th, and is supported by various local government agencies, community groups and other organisations. The students participating in “Kids Teaching Kids” are required to make a creative and entertaining presentation

to deliver to their peers at the conference. For this project, eleven of the Pomona State School’s Eco-Warriors have worked with local filmmaker Ben Lockens to create a documentary depicting some important aspects of our cultural and environmental heritage, including indigenous environmental knowledge and bush tucker foods. According to the event’s creator Arron Wood (a previous Australian Environmentalist of the Year), “Adults take a back seat at this event. Kids teach each other in much more interesting creative ways than the usual classroom format.” “Most importantly, the kids learn they can make a real difference on these issues, despite the magnitude of problems facing their environment,” Arron said.

THE kids of Kin Kin are getting an early Xmas present from Council. Division 12 Councillor Tony Wellington has allocated some of his divisional funds towards an upgrade of the skate park in the sports ground. “The existing skate park just had beginner ramps, and many of the local kids had outgrown them,” he said. “I was hearing of parents having to drive their children to skate parks further afield so they could enjoy a bigger challenge. This skate ramp gets plenty of use. Every day after school there are kids enjoying the facility. Last financial year I was able to provide a shade structure. The two new ramps funded from this year’s divisional

allocation are half-pipes that will provide plenty of outdoor exercise and fun.” A crane was called in to position the 11-ton units next to the existing ramps. Noosa Engineering removed the handrails and reinstalled the new custom units. All this work was completed in one day. Kin Kin School Principal Trent Shaw agreed that the new challenging sections will be much appreciated. “There are not a lot of facilities for young people out here in Kin Kin,” he said. “It’s fantastic that the Council appreciates the needs of rural kids. The new sections of the skate park will be much enjoyed.”

THE Noosa Country Show H2O Art Exhibition will be held in the Squash Courts the 6th & 7th September, Exhibition Street Pomona. Interested persons are invited to attend. Winning artists of each of the seven sections will be announced at the Opening on Thursday evening.

POMONA

It’s Noosa Country showtime! SHOWTIME comes to Pomona on Friday September 6 when the 104th Noosa Country Show opens for two days of traditional show entertainment along with plenty of new attractions. Sideshows and rides, taste treats that only a country show can provide, live music and educational displays, art and crafts – they’re all there along with horse events, cattle and dog judging and woodchopping. Fireworks will light up the sky on Friday evening, and on Saturday night there’ll be the thrills and spills of rodeo. A two-day program of live music has been arranged by the Australian Institute of Country Music. The dog show on the Friday has long been a Noosa Show attraction, but this year the family dog could well become a star by appearing in the Most Loveable Muttley event where pedigrees count for nothing. It’s open to kids up to 12 years. Just put doggy on a lead, fill in an entry form at the Secretary’s Office by 2pm, and get down to the Dog Show area on the tennis courts ready for judging at 3pm. “Kids in the garden” is a new category in the revamped Fruit and Veg section, giving a chance for youngsters to show off their own garden produce. There’s a Primary School Challenge too, sponsored by Jeff and Kay Kelloway of Pomona Fruit & Vegie Market. In Horticulture, another chance for juniors: enter an arrangement of greenery and blooms with the theme “September in my Garden”. Kay Ashby-McBride is the new steward. The horse section, which occupies the centre of the showground on both days, has been given a major update with guidance from Ekka organisers. While there are a lot fewer classes, show organisers believe the new program will cater much better for both equestrians and horse lovers. Stud Beef Cattle is another section that has been updated, with assistance from John Masterman and students of Noosa District High School. The new beef cattle steward is Viv Temple. In the Pavilion craft area, don’t miss the display of work by Noosa’s highly skilled practitioners of botanical art, and some amazing examples of “altered books” and traditional scrap-booking. As well, exponents of a variety of crafts will be demonstrating their skill and passing on tips in activities including spinning, knitting, counted cross-stitch, crocheting and quilting. The Creative Craft section includes a new “challenge” which builds on the success of last year’s event. You’ll be amazed at the ideas people come up with when asked to best use a piece of the same fabric, this time in a table centrepiece or runner. There’s a “bit of fun” to check out too. In cookery, there’s a new novelty class

and fudge has been reintroduced to meet popular demand. An apiculture section has been introduced this year, with honey tasting opportunities and bee-keeping demos as well as the competition among the region’s honeymakers. This year the volunteers of the Pomona Railway Station Art Gallery are helping by organising and presenting the Art section. The theme is H2O - water, the essential for life, and there’ll be an opportunity to see the exhibits and meet the artists at an H20 Exhibition Opening and Awards Presentation on Thursday, September 5, from 6pm. Always popular, the animal nursery and

The presenting chefs at the Maleny Real Food Festival: Chris White from Hungry Feel Eating House, Laurent Vancam from Chef Laurent, Monica Topliss from Kunara Organic Café, Cameron Matthews from The Long Apron at Spicers Clovelly Estate and Chris Bond from Pomodoras on Obi.

VISITORS to the Real Food Festival will have the opportunity to taste the flavours of the world this year, with more than 30 ready-to-eat stalls offering a range of international cuisines. The festival, held from 7th to 8th September in Maleny is a celebration of the Sunshine Coast’s local food industry from paddock to plate. Festival Director, Julie Shelton said guests could eat their way around the globe, with the festival featuring traditional foods from Africa, Brazil, Italy, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia, Vietnam, Mexico, Germany, and of course, modern Australia. “The variety of the foods on offer this year will be amazing – something to suit any age, palate or preference,” Julie said. Entry is $15 for a daily adult pass and children under 16 are free.

Dhom’s Thai Cooking Tips DHOM offers some tips from her popular cooking classes at Dhom’s Kitchen. Invest in some essential Thai cooking utensils: mortar and pestle, steel wok and spatula and a rice cooker. Electric vs gas cooking: It is possible to make excellent Thai food with a frying pan on an electric stove. Often a heavy-duty, deep teflon aluminium pan produces better results on an electric stove than a wok due to the pan’s larger surface area. Trust you palette: Cook to your own taste. Inexperienced cooks tend to over sweeten Thai dishes. Thais cook to their own individual taste. It is not insulting to the chef or your host to adjust the flavour of your meal at the table. Use lime not lemon juice for authentic flavours: Lime juice loses its sharpness after a few minutes. For salads and soups requiring lime juice, add

a squeeze of lime juice before serving. Grow your own essential Thai ingredients: lemongrass, galangal, coriander, mint, turmeric, chillies, Thai coriander, Thai basil, spring onion and kaffir lime. Fish sauce: While strong and pungent on its own, it can add balance and harmony to a dish that salt and soya sauce cannot. For a simple accompaniment, ‘narm pla prik’, add finely sliced chilli to fish sauce. Cooking Thai jasmine rice. Use a good rice cooker to cook perfect jasmine rice. Wash rice in several changes of water before cooking. Aged rice cooks better and will need a little more water than young rice. The next cooking demonstration will be on 10 September (Quick & Easy Thai) and 24 September (Pad Thai Noodles and Soups). For bookings contact Dhom on 5447 7710.

Wind in the Willows VETERAN actor, Keith Souter, says his next role as Flash Harry in Wind in the Willows, is a wonderful part. In the past couple of years Keith has mixed his adult stage roles with a spate of villains in Indee children’s shows. From the pirate Smee in Peter Pan to an Ugly Sister in Cinderella, Keith’s enjoyed them all, but he says Flash Harry is something different. ”Harry is a super salesman who sells cars to Mr. Toad. Each colour is a dearer price, even though they’re the same model.

Harry is funny and he’s fun to play.” Keith will be joined by another Indee veteran, Debbie Pitura who will take on the role of Mr. Toad in the September school holidays production. The Wind in the Willows will play at the Indee Theatre in Eumundi, 5pm Friday 27th September, 4pm Saturday 28th and 11am Sunday 29th plus 4pm Saturday 5th & 3pm Sunday 6 th October. The worst day of my life IT was a Saturday afternoon, my husband and I were both chilling out at home watching a bit of TV and chatting about things. Suddenly my husband of nearly 42 years collapsed and slumped over. Thinking he was messing around, I said to him what are you doing. Then when I realised he was not responding, called the ambulance and described what was happening. Being so panicked, I couldn’t even tell if he was breathing or not. They asked me if I knew CPR, and I told them I had learnt resuscitation, but it was such a long time ago. They told me they would help me perform CPR until the ambulance arrived. Even though I was unsure I could do it correctly, I knew I had to do whatever I could until help arrived. The ambulance staff were all amazing, giving me instruction over the phone and talking to me the whole time, counting with me to keep constant compressions. I continued until the ambulance arrived. It seemed an eternity but it was only a matter of minutes, I believe. The Paramedics were so calm and in control reassuring me all the while. My husband had gone into cardiac arrest, and as well as CPR he required a Defibrillator to start his heart. The Paramedics and then the Intensive Care Paramedic worked on him for some time including several shocks to his heart before he was stable enough to transport to Hospital. After outstanding treatment at Nambour General Hospital, he is now recovering well. All staff who treated and cared for him from

the Emergency Department, Intensive Care and finally Coronary Care Unit and Specialists were absolutely wonderful. Not all outcomes are as good as this. Our family has a great result, with him recovering well and getting stronger every day. I wanted to share this experience with others in the community. I intend to update my CPR knowledge as soon as I can. If you get the opportunity to learn the basics of CPR please take it. You never know when you may need it. It could save the life of someone, especially a loved one. Actually, it turned out to be the best day of my life. My husband survived. Gayl Hoskin

Register your interest in CPR classes GAYL has asked Dr Ken Corbett at Maple Street Surgery if he would conduct CPR classes as she didn’t realise how much it has changed over the years. Dr Corbett has readily agreed providing there is enough interest from the community, so if you’d like to learn and/or have a refresher, please phone Gayl on 5472 0404. It could be worth a life.

health Noosa Hinterland Denture Services Have “Happy Feet” New dentures Repairs This Summer? AS the weather warms up, out come the flip flops and sandals. Unfortunately though, this type of footwear can often result in foot problems and pain. We have already noticed an increase in the number of people presenting to the clinic complaining of heel pain. Many of you will be familiar with this. You wake up and as you put your foot on the ground, there is sharp pain under the heel like you’ve stepped on a pin. The first few steps are very painful, then things ease off. The same happens each morning until gradually the symptoms are there most of the time. This condition is known as plantar fasciitis which is an inflammation of the connective tissue which runs from the ball of the foot to the heel of the foot (plantar fascia). This inflammation is caused by excessive and repetitive strain being placed on the foot without adequate support and /or poor biomechanics. While sandals and flip flops may be cooler to wear in summer, the majority of them have hard, flat soles and no arch support. When choosing summer sandals, be sure to choose a shoe that has some heel support, arch support and a firm but flexible sole. If you need to walk long distances, try to wear a more supportive shoe rather than sandals. Standard thongs should not be worn at all if you are suffering from heel or foot pain. The earlier that treatment is sought for foot pain, the easier it is to treat. Treatment can include antiinflammatories, ice, taping, massage, stretches, ultrasound and taping. It is important to ensure that the calf muscles are flexible to allow adequate ankle bend and reduce the strain on the plantar fascia. Foot strengthening exercises can also be included to support the arch and reduce the risk of recurrence. A biomechanical assessment will determine if hip (gluteal muscle) weakness is contributing to the biomechanical problems. If you are suffering from foot pain or need some advice on summer footwear, seek advice from a health professional as soon as possible. Kinesologist promotes wellbeing CATHERINE Arbuckle has been practicing kinesiology for over five years and employs a range of kinesiology approaches including PKP, Touch for Health and Brain Gym. She also draws upon her psychological training and experience in working with children to support people to realize their health and wellbeing goals. Catherine believes in a holistic approach to health and teaches people techniques to use themselves outside of the kinesiology session. Kinesiology is an approach that combines Western techniques and Eastern wisdom. It promotes physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing by identifying what is inhibiting the person’s innate healing abilities and what is needed to re-

store balance and health. People seek kinesiology to support pain management, injury recovery, learning difficulties, stress, and allergies as well as remove barriers to personal growth. A kinesiology session uses gentle muscle testing to identify stresses and energy blockages in your system. It also enables Catherine to determine what is specifically required for you and what you want to achieve. Catherine is available for sessions on Wednesday and weekends by appointment at Life Enhancing Chiropractic. Book a session with Catherine to balance mind and body by calling Life Enhancing Chiropractic on 07 54720808 or Catherine on 0448 841727.

Stresses of life wearing you out? ARE you one of the many Australians who have a fast paced life that is wearing you down? You may be a CEO, business owner or even a mum with young children. It is likely that there was a time where you felt you could take on the world and you thrived under pressure. You might have occasionally had to strain to do everything but you pushed through. But most of us hit a wall at some time. We find it’s not so easy to keep pushing through; we start to feel fatigued and achieving what we used to becomes so much harder. And often we blame getting older or just put it down to the effects of non-stop overwork. Lee Smith & Maria Sturre of Make A Difference Health & Fitness has a solution, “Often

we blame our low energy levels on overwork but most often it is about your health. Unfortunately, busy people often don’t believe they need to prioritise their health and fitness. They figure that getting winded by a five-minute run or having above-average blood pressure doesn’t stop them from doing their job. But they don’t realise that the reason their energy levels are low is because their health is suffering and that this can easily be turned around.” All aspects of your life can be the victim of that kind of thinking. When you neglect your health and fitness it affects your decision making, attention span and stress levels making it more difficult to get work done. Family life is impaired also, as you tend to be tired and detached. Not to mention the myriad of health problems that can end up having serious long term effects. Lee says dramatic results can be found by focussing on your health and fitness. “People have trouble sticking to an exercise program when they don’t really know how far they’ve come or how successful they are. Keeping health in mind also gets easier as you get fitter as you start to feel great and don’t want to lose your energy levels again. But getting started is usually the hardest step as people find it overwhelming and don’t know where to start. To help people get started, we’ve developed a great offer which includes a fitness assessment, goal setting, one-on-one session with a personal trainer and a VLA consultation with our naturopath. health Amy’s story and why she’s passionate about helping you achieve wellness AMY Steinbeck is an acupuncturist and Doctor of Chinese Medicine with a passion for living with integrity, living fully and eating wholly. “I love food and more specifically wholefoods and foods that make me feel good,” said Amy. “Food is my medicine and I like my medicine to be delicious. It gives me so much pleasure to inspire people to eat creatively and enjoy what they eat, to cook simply from grass roots and to prepare food with love to cook from the heart and to feed the soul! I love getting the chance to spend a few hours in the kitchen but I also like to prepare and cook quickly and simply as I am also a mum to two small and delicious human beings. “But there’s a twist … last year three weeks after the glorious homebirth of our beautiful daughter I had a very unexpected and earth shattering grand mal seizure. I had just dropped our son off at his Grandma’s, driven to our clinic to have my first much-needed massage post-birth, put the sleeping baby down and was chatting to my good friend and therapist when my brain literally ‘glitched’. I remember thinking ‘this is really weird, I’m going to say so as soon as I can’ but I couldn’t and the last thing I remember I was waking up and being wheeled out of the clinic on a stretcher and into an ambulance. “After CT scans and MRI’s I was told I had a growth on my brain that needed to be operated on in the next week and that it was a suspected tumour. As you can imagine, I was devastated and terrified and contemplating my own mortality. I was wondering if I’d see my children grow up and if my daughter would ever remember me. The following week I underwent a craniotomy and the surgeons were able to remove most of the tumour. The tumour was a Type II Oligodendroglioma which means (as it was told to me by my sur-

geon) that on the sliding scale of benign to malignant it was on the benign end, but over the period of the next 10 years it will slide up to the malignant end. “Oh and it will grow back in that time. Screeech! Stop the record! That’s when I finally said: “No. This isn’t happening to me, this is not my story.” “And so my journey began and continues today….my journey of discovery, to be mindful of my health and vitality and to reduce the tumour and to stop it ever growing back. I embrace my life long journey to raise my children as a healthy mother and to be here for my husband for many more years to come. I choose to live as cleanly and fully as possible and to live in truth and integrity. “As I continue on this journey I am leaving no stone unturned as I research and explore everything from Nutrition to NLP; Massage to Metaphysics; Homeopathy to Hypnotherapy and of course lots of Acupuncture and Chinese medicine. “My desire is also to inspire and encourage you to create change in your own life…to challenge yourself, to impassion your life and to dare greatly.” To contact Amy phone Maple Street Acupuncture on 5442 5526.

NOOSA District State High School’s athletics day on Friday August 9 was a sunny affair with perfect weather. Students participated in a variety of events to earn points for their house including the 100 metre heats, 200 metres, 400 metres, 800 metres and the 100 metre relays; shot put; long jump; triple jump; high jump; best dressed and war cry competitions. Students wore a variety of attire, with many opting for a take on the ‘onesie’. Sponge Bob, The Joker, Angry Birds, the Mario Brothers and bananas also featured. All students who finished first or second in their sporting event are invited into the school team for the North District representative carnival. Third place-getters are the reserves.

Noosa Junior Rugby League THE Junior Stingray selectors have announced the finalised teams to represent the Sunshine Coast at the QJRU State Championships at Albany Creek from Monday 23 September until Wednesday 25 September. Selectors have also named shadows for each team to cover possible injuries in the weeks leading up to departure. 27 Noosa Players have made the final cut with a further 4 players selected as shadows. Experienced Junior Stingray’s Coach, Kelvin Heirdsfield said that “this has been one of the most difficult years he can remember in trying to select a team, with so many quality players available. While it’s difficult to see some players miss out, it’s a great sign for the future of Sunshine Coast rugby”. Junior Stingray Under 16 Head Coach, Ian Brown, said “it’s great to see some of the shadows that missed out last year gain selection this year as a result of their continued desire to improve and keep working on their game”. The depth of talent in each age group has resulted in strong squads and the expectation of the good results come September. For the first time, this year there will also be City and Country teams selected in all age groups, with the

Junior Stingray players vying for selection in each Country team, who will each play City at Ballymore on Friday 27 September. This new initiative from the QJRU restores the traditional Country v City rivalry with the country regions always keen to put the city boys in their place. A Jersey Presentation will take place on Sunday 15 September, before the team depart for the Championships on Monday 23 September. The Noosa Dolphins wish to congratulate the following Noosa players to have made selection as follows: U17s Jnr Stingray Team 2013 James Grigson, Mac Kippen, Sam Murray, Will Rogers, Aden Troxell, Jasper Webb (Shadow) - U16s Jnr Stingray Team 2013 - Jarrad Greentree, Zac Howson, Brad Morgan, Chris Morgan, Andrew Ramsden, Jed Younie (Shadow) - U15s Jnr Stingray Team 2013 - Zac Allen, Ben Ashman, Patrick Gelling, Luke Giacca, Dylan Hein, David Hoffman, Borore Howton, Ben Rogers - U14s Jnr Stingray Team 2013 - Jesse Birkett, Oscar Rogers, Jake Staveley (Shadow) - U13s Jnr Stingrays Team 2013 - Joel Cavell, John Gelling, Adam Jurisevic, Kai Marshall, Alex Moses, Jesse Russell, Sameet Raju (Shadow)

Benny “The Bulldog” Cameron-Hands IMPACT fighters put in a golden performance at this year’s National Golden Gloves tournament. The National Golden Gloves attracted over 250 fighters from all over Australia and some parts of the world. There were 170 bouts contested over 4 days making this tournament one of the biggest tournaments to be held in the country. First up for the Impact crew was “Slamin Sam” CameronHands. Sam’s opponent was Taryn Walker from Caboolture. “Both boys boxed extremely well and although we thought Sam had done enough to win it wasn’t to be his night and Walker was awarded the Gold with a split points decision and Sam took home the Silver,” said coach Mark Evans. “Next up was Benny “The Bulldog” Cameron-Hands. Benny drew Dechlan Powell from W.A. in the final bout.

Cian “The Cannon” Jones These two boys fought for the Australian title in Adelaide in February this year with Benny being crowned the Australian champ in that one. With the two top boxers in their division in the country fighting in the final it was always going to be a cracker of a fight. Benny once again proved why he is the champ as he was awarded the golden gloves in a tough and very close victory. “Next up was Cian “The Cannon” Jones. Cian’s oppononent was Braedan Nairn from Brisbane. These two boys have already fought in title fights against each other previously with each boy having one victory each against the other one. This was to be

Payton “The Assassin” Aird-Cardiff’s the decider and what a decider it turned out to be. Both boys stood toe to toe with each of them having their moments through out the fight. Cian came home strong in the last round & was declared the winner & the new Golden Gloves champ! “Finally for the Impact crew it was Payton “The Assassin” Aird-Cardiff’s turn to climb into centre ring. Payton could not get a fight in her own division so she stepped to the 57 kg division to challenge a girl two years older than her and who was also undefeated from New Caledonia. Payton fought her heart out but when the final bell rang her opponent was awarded the victory and

“Slamin Sam” CameronHands Payton took home the Silver Gloves. “I am so proud again of these kids, they all fought their hearts out,” said Mark. “Sam was very unlucky not to get the decision in his fight, a rematch is already on the cards for him. Benny and Cian boxed extremely well to gain another two solid wins and have both won their Golden Gloves two years running now. Payton was also impressive with her performance against her first International bout. Not many kids can say they have fought an international opponent at 13 yrs of age. The experience she gained from that fight will make her so much stronger for her next one.”

Well known local boxing coach, Mark Evans, along with a team of other locals, competed in the recent Tough Mudder event held in Caloundra recently. Mark (insert right) had this to say about the event: “If you thought boxing was tough, think again! The tough mudder was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Twenty kms of running through a state forest with an obstacle challenge every two km! Lucky we are Tough Mudda Funkas!” (the name of their team)

Cooroora United ladies are looking good AS their first season in the Premier Women’s Division begins to wind down, the Cooroora United ladies took time to thank one of their valued sponsors this week. Outgoing Cooroora United president and ladies’ coach, Steve Standish was on hand with the ladies to share a laugh and a photo with Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards and express how much the team appreciates their smart team jackets to wear this season on top of the funding provided to the club. “We all know that sponsorship plays a key role in supporting a team and the Cooroy Community Bank branch sponsorship of Cooroora United is one of many that continue to be a great fit for us. We support the

community bank that in turn supports us,” Steve said. “The club has

worked really hard at all age levels this season and it’s great to see the results. To see

so many of our teams out there enjoying their football on so many levels is just fantastic

and it’s so great for all the volunteers who put so much into this great club.” Geoff Edwards said he’s delighted to have been able to support the club for another season. “Cooroora United is filled with some great team players. We see our sponsorship as a great fit and I think all the ladies look great in their jackets. We look forward to sponsoring Cooroora United again in 2014. Go the wombats!” Geoff said. Anyone looking to become involved with Cooroora United can do so by contacting the club through any of the numbers on its website: cufc.org.au. Geoff Edwards is joined by coach Steve Standish and the Cooroora United ladies in their team jackets

A big congratulations to the Cooroora 4th Div Men’s team (The Mighty Wombats) who took out the title of Minor Premiers last weekend. They will now compete against Coolum (the outcome of which won’t be known until the paper goes to press) but if they win that match they will go straight into the Grand Final which will be played at Coolum on September 13.
