ONE of the Sunshine Coast’s longest operating companies is about to resume production after moving to the site of Cooroy’s old brickworks factory. Businessman Peter Lavin has spent millions of dollars on the sparkling new factory in Lake Macdonald. Final touches on the landscaping are being completed and machinery testing is currently underway with the first batch of Wimmers softdrinks expected to be produced at the new factory by the end of this month. Mr Lavin is enthusiastic about the future of Wimmers with the new factory allowing him the room to expand. “It’s all about keeping your costs down, keeping your product competitive and getting exposure into major supermarkets,” he said. Mr Lavin has spent $8 million on the move but he says the investment will be worth it. “You’ve got to have faith in the product and the area,” he said. Wimmers has been using the original softdrink recipes for over 100 years. Already being distributed through IGA stores, Coles and Woolworths now have Wimmers products in their distribution centres. Mr Lavin plans to expand the business by including nutrient waters in the range and has already garnered a lot of interest from China. The Company, Noosa Beverages, also owns Cooroy Mountain Spring Water.

news It will be all smiles at Xmas in Cooroy for tug of war

COOROY RAG THE long-running, friendly feud between businesses on the east and west side of the Cooroy train tracks will again be officially waged in the East Versus West Tug of War at Christmas in Cooroy. This year new sponsors have come on board, Hinterland Dental. “The East versus West Tug of War has been a popular part of Christmas in Cooroy for several years now. Hinterland Dental have come on board as the sponsor this year so we know it will be smiles all around when the teams go head to head in battle this year,” said event Manager, Danielle Taylor. “The challenge is always quickly taken up by enthusiastic traders on both sides of the tracks to see

Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival 2015 ON Sunday 18 October 2015 the Rotary Club of Cooroy will provide an opportunity to climb Cooroy Mountain. This is only the second time in 9 years that the public will have access to the mountain across private land. For just $10 (age under 16 free) you can come along and enjoy a fun day of music, a kids’ activity centre, food and market stalls and have a chance to climb Cooroy Mountain. Linda Morell, President of the Rotary Club of Cooroy said: “As part of the Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival and with a very generous sponsorship donation from McDermott Helicopters, there is a chance to see Cooroy from the sky for only $50.” Start the day with billy tea and damper and a hearty BBQ breakfast, stroll

through the rainforest walkway or sit and listen to the wonderful stories from bush poet, John Major. Entertainment will be provided by the wonderful local UkeCrazy People, part of the big, wonderful club the Sunshine Coast Ukulele Masters. The event is to raise funds for good causes and this year local Sunshine Coast disability support service Sunshine Butterflies will be the main beneficiary. Sunshine Butterflies are supporting babies, kids, tweens, teens and adults with a disability and their families where their proceeds will be used to further their ‘Our Backyard Project’ a 5 acre Hobby Farm in Cooroibah (just out of Tewantin/Noosa) that has something for everyone of all ages and abilities

Linda Morrell, President of the Rotary Club of Cooroy said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a Sunday morning walk and get a view of our beautiful countryside from the top of Mount Cooroy.

Last year we attracted over 750 participants and we expect to match and improve on the number this year.” “We are very grateful to our main sponsors, Cooroy Mountain Spring

Water for providing access to the mountain and McDermott Helicopters who will provide short flights over the mountain and the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce for the free loan of equipment.”

Hello Spring It’s September at last, and I wish I were young Spring has arrived, but alas, my Spring has long been sprung. The hormones have begun bubbling in the birds and the bees, Especially in the delightful and shapely feminine young shes. I cast my mind back to my younger spring days, When we conformed to prim and proper old fashioned ways. Life was more contented, more fun, more sunny, And boys were inclined to be all hands and no money. But along with Spring, and its glorious flowers, Its colourful gardens where you could wander for hours, Only to be greeted by dive-bombing mapgies, Aiming for your head, your ears, and your eyes. Not caring a jot that you were romantically inclined, The law of the jungle was occupying their mind. My courage sinks low in cowardly full retreat, As I flee unashamedly down the sheltering street. My mind is on pleasanter things, not some Kamikaze Magpie behind me, Guarding her chicks in a nearby gum tree. (Much nicer to think of someone better looking, like Deborah, No matter what the challenge, how could one ignore her??? I would have loved a rhyme for the charming Deb, But the best I could do was unsuitable – World Wide Web!! Sorry!) They are truly wonderful, those dedicated nurses, Inspiring admiring poets to writing romantic springtime verses.

BARB Schilds started working at Tewantin Community Bank branch 11 years ago when that branch first opened. She worked there a full time teller for four years. At Tewantin’s loss, Barb transferred to Cooroy as a full time teller and has been with the Cooroy Community Bank branch ever since. To have more time with her family, in 2008, Barb chose to go part-time which has been the case until now. Barb has now made the decision to hang up her abacus and retire to enjoy her time with her husband and travel the world.· After talking to the bank’s customers it’s very clear dear Barb will be sorely missed.· She has been a wonderful supporter for many years of the sponsorships the Cooroy branch has been involved with.· Although all of Cooroy will all miss her wonderful dry humour and her friendship, we are delighted with her decision to move on to the next exciting chapter in her life. Go well Barb and thanks for everything!

IF you don’t have a nest egg saved up or an equity partner, then you may need to borrow to finance your purchase. That’s when it’s time to call your local banker. Your branch will need key financial information about the business, including profitability, cash flow, sales forecasts and growth potential. Your business banker will look for a sound business with healthy cash flow to ensure you can repay the loan. You’ll need some equity in your business by investing your own money. And you’ll usually need to provide security for the loan, such as a residential property, business assets or other assets, like a share portfolio. What you’ll need • The current balance sheet. • A full tax return for the business for the last two years. • A profit and loss statement for the business for the last two years. • Details of your qualifications and any previous experience in running a business. • Information about your

personal assets and liabilities. • Details about the equity you plan to invest in the business. • Depending on your experience and the profitability of the business, you may also need to put together forecasts of expected profit and loss and cash flow for the first two years. Pitfalls to avoid • Leaving it too late. It can take time for your banker to assess the proposal. Leave yourself time to put your application together and secure finance before you need to sign on the dotted line. • Too little financial information. Your banker needs all the key numbers to make a decision. Cutting

corners on your application could mean you end up gathering more information later. • Not borrowing enough. A lack of money to keep the business going is a common cause of business failure. You need to ensure you have enough capital to feed your business from day to day, without starving it of cash flow. At the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank we specialise in working with local businesses of all sizes. So, if you have any questions about any form of your business or finances, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

REV it up, chrome it up, fire it up and give it up. Look out Coastal Cruisers it’s on again! The call has gone out once again for all bike enthusiasts to be a part of the fabulous Annual Noosa Charity Bike Ride on Sunday 27th September 2015. This event gets bigger, better and louder each year, with bikers coming from as far as Bundaberg and the Gold Coast to hit the highways all for a great cause. This successful and highly anticipated ride is now in its 9th year and held in support of Sunshine Butterflies a local charity that has stamped its purple butterfly trademark on the hearts of many Coast families caring for children and young adults with disabilities. Sunshine Butterflies has been the passion and drive behind Founder and Principal Leanne Walsh following the birth of her son

Curtis, born with Cerebral Palsy 20 years ago. Through Leanne’s vision of creating a need for her Son, she has brought to reality all that Sunshine Butterflies now encompasses. With no government funding, it is events such as this annual charity bike ride that enables many of the high quality programs to continue including the dream of ‘Our Backyard’ a 5 acre hobby farm under development at Cooroibah which has been supported by established organisation such as The Variety Club donating the playground. Fundraising days like this will further expand services to meet the ongoing needs for families of persons with disabilities and awareness to the greater community. The bikes fire up at the AFL grounds at Noosa and meander their way up through the lush Hinterland roads towards Kin Kin where all participants

down helmets at the Kin Kin Hotel for a good old ‘Coin Toss’. Then its helmets back on, as everyone hits the road towards the final destination at Silky Oak Tea Gardens at Gympie for a cold beer

and a hot Roast Buffet Lunch. Consistently well respected businesses get on board with sponsorship raffles. This year there are a number of great raffles to be won including 2 women’s leather jackets valued

at $400 each donated by April Bella. For the very small outlay of $20 per bike this is a great cause for our legendary Sunday Cruisers to get behind. Registration on the day starts at 8:30am.

Desex your dog and save COUNCIL is reminding residents new dog registration charges take effect this year. The new structure rewards pensioners with free registration if they de-sex their dogs. Dog owners, generally, will pay less if their pet is desexed. However Council will no longer offer a discount for dogs that are micro-chipped, to

reflect changes in state law. This means that most dog owners will pay $30 a year. “Registration for a desexed dog is $30, or free with a pensioner discount. That compares with $140 to register a dog that has not been desexed or $115 with the concession. Mr Amson praised

Noosa residents for desexing their pets, with the Shire recording one of the highest de-sexing rates in Queensland. Council will begin mailing out annual registration renewal forms from September 1. The regulated dog registration will rise from $257 to $400 per year. Mr Amson said that the

second highest number of calls received by Council from the public was about dogs and responding to them was both time consuming and costly. “In July, for example, local laws officers spent more than 450 hours dealing with stray dogs, following up complaints about barking dogs, investigating dog at-

tacks and other animal management activities.” Council believes that the new fee structure is fair and will recoup most of the costs of the service that Council provides. Under the Animal Management Act Council must spend all income from registration fees on animal management activities.

NOOSA Regional Art Gallery Director, Nina Shadforth, has announced that the PopUp Art Series Exhibition that has been at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre since May will now continue through until the end of the year. “The success of the exhibition has been so encouraging from both artists and the community of Cooroy and I am really pleased to be able to extend the PopUp shows through to the end of the year”, said Gallery Director Nina Shadforth. The PopUp Art Series Exhibition has been a collaboration between the Noosa Regional Art Gallery and regional

artists through Artists Collective and coordinated by well known local artists Tricia Bradford and Gabi Dick. “Visitation to the Butter Factory has increased steadily with the PopUp exhibition which is gaining traction in terms of the visitor knowing that there will be artists on-site to talk to, be able to purchase an original work of art (at reasonable prices) and even see artists working”, added Ms Shadforth. Throughout the remaining months of this year, the PopUp exhibition will also be peppered with annual local favourites: Noosa District State High School

Yr 12 Student Exhibition and the Christmas in Cooroy Photographic Exhibition. “The PopUp series concept has certainly activated the Butter Factory space and I believe that the local businesses are starting to see some positive signs and reasons to extend their hours for visitors to Cooroy who like to visit galleries and enjoy a coffee or lunch as part of their visit”, said Nina.

Asset building years By Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* During their 20s and 30s, most people focus on the basics of financial security: families, first home deposits, super contributions and personal investments. By the time you reach your mid-forties, things have usually changed. You’ve progressed in your career and you’ll typically see your salary and net worth rising, along with your living expenses. More importantly, you are just about to enter your peak earning years. In terms of building assets, these can be your golden years so it’s important you plan to use them effectively. Sorting out the options This is a period of many options, and a few risks. Should you concentrate on paying off your mortgage? Reducing your tax? Building your personal investment portfolio? Making a career change? Investing for a more comfortable retirement? Or a combination of these strategies? Finding the right answers means some serious thought about what your life and investment priorities are, and sitting down to talk with your financial planner may help. The answers are different for each of us, and getting them right is the key to maximising the financial possibilities that these peak earning years present. Sylvia and Gerry’s storySylvia, who’s in her mid-forties, runs her own catering company, while Gerry, also in his mid forties, is a structural engineer.

The older of their two sons will be completing school next year. Gerry was recently promoted and the boost to his salary means they expect to have at least $13,000 to save, invest or spend in the coming year. Gerry intends to continue salary sacrificing to build up his super which now stands at $267,000, while Sylvia has accumulated $22,000 in her fund. She plans to boost her super when she sells her catering business sometime after she reaches 55, or the boys have left home. They believe their insurance cover is adequate; however, they ran down their modest cash reserves to support Sylvia’s new business, and want to add at least $15,000. They are happy to continue paying off their variable rate mortgage which is $280,000, though they are not sure if they should be more aggressive in reducing that. When Sylvia and Gerry met their financial planner, they brought along their list of questions, though Sylvia was more interested in super while Gerry’s focus was on building their investments. Over several meetings, their planner presented them with a number of scenarios. Sylvia and Gerry were able to weigh up paying down their mortgage with their surplus funds over time, compared with salary sacrificing that same money into super. The planner also indicated to them the possible impact of fluctuating market conditions on their super.

They also determined the lump sum amount required if Sylvia and Gerry wanted to retire when Gerry reached age 65.This information gave some focus to their discussions. They decided to pay down their mortgage with some of their surplus funds each year, and contribute the remainder of the surplus funds to their managed investment portfolio. This allowed them to build their wealth inside and outside of super to bolster their retirement goals. Putting your plans together As this story suggests, there are many situations and options that people have in their asset-building years. An important first step is to take stock and develop your own ‘shopping list’. The decisions and the changes start with you, and we’re here to help. THE Foundation for Culture and Arts Eumundi is delighted to announce the 2015 winner of the Eumundi Sculpture Prize. It is ‘The Spirit Orb” by Meg Geer and Richard Thompson. The winner announcement at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre was in the presence of a large crowd of enthusiastic art lovers and community leaders and supporters. On display were the maquettes (3D models) created by the eight sculptors shortlisted by the three judges: Samantha Littley, Curator of the University of Queensland Art Museum, Philip Bacon, Director Philip Bacon Galleries and well known art collector and philanthropist and John Mainwaring, Sunshine Coast architect and art collector. An excited Meg Geer said, “This win is part of my dream come true. Four years ago I made a career change to become a full time designer and artist. This will be our first public art sculpture so it’s a special thrill.” Chair of the Foundation for Culture and Arts Eumundi Michael Carney said, “The judges were impressed with the creative interpretation of the theme The Anzac Spirit – yesterday, today, tomorrow by sculptors across Australia seeking to win the $20,000 national acquisitive public art prize. The Foundation is most appreciative of the Experience Eumundi sponsorship for the prize contributed by the Eumundi Combined Community Organisation.” The maquettes will continue to be on display at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre until 10 December. There is an opportunity for visitors to cast a vote for the People’s Choice award at the Centre or via www.eumundisculptureprize.com. Berkelouw Books have donated a $50 lucky prize for one entrant in People’s Choice voting. This year’s winners will now create the full size sculpture that will be placed in Eumundi’s Amphitheatre. Arts in Action festival goes underwater OH to be a kid again! The 2015 Eumundi State School Arts in Action Festival took place last week and what a celebration it was. Organisers and participants went crazy with the theme Under the Sea with a presentation in the school hall that would rival a Hollywood movie set. Every year the Eumundi State School P&C put together this festival to

create a memory for every child who attends the school. It may be the biggest fundraising event of the year, but the festival is created to give families from the school the opportunity to be involved in making our children happy if just for a day. Rides were on hand for the adrenalin rush, stalls gave the kids the opportunity to learn how to purchase fun things

with their pocket money and the auction of classcreated art pieces were about celebrating the artistic talent within a very special school. Eumundi P&C volunteers and staff worked hard to provide the best event they can every year, and this year was no exception. It’s challenging with huge expenses attached to an event of this festival’s size but, costs are covered and

provide excess to support our school in all its educational endeavours. One of the new sponsors to come on board this year was the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. Eumundi State School P&C Operations Manager and one of the organisers of the festival, Karen Allen said it was great to have the Community Bank’s support. “Geoff Edwards and his team have been fantastic to us this year,” Karen said. “Bendigo Bank have sponsored a lots of Eumundi events and activities over the years and we’re delighted to have received funds to be able to have made this celebration what it was this year. How Bendigo and our market and business community come together to help support Eumundi State School is just fantastic,” she added. Karen went on to thank all the school’s families, staff and visitors for supporting the Arts in Action Festival in 2015 and say how much everyone is looking forward to the festival in 2016.

Sivyers family commemoration FAMILY members came from far and wide for the unveiling of the commemorative plaque and handing over to Council by patriatch Ron of a much treasured family shot. One of the pioneering families of our community, a visit to the Sivyers family website documents life in the early days of Cooroy and Tinbeerwah where Clarence Sivyer worked hard on the rail-

ways to provide for 12 children. Our history is full of inspirational stories, and the hardships faced by our pioneers. If you would love

to find out about our history, take a visit to the Museum @ Pomona chat to the Genies, or online on the Council webby.

New owners Bronwyn and John Heinzel are very excited to have taken over the business and will continue to provide your quality patchwork fabric, yarns and haberdashery needs, as well as offering some great classes. Steep slopes, no probs for Darrel ground as its track system is low impact and total weight is only 1400kg allowing most jobs to be maintained through wet seasons.” So when it’s time to tackle those tough areas, give Darrel Hinson at All Slopes Remote Control Mowing a call on 0457 001 251.

MANY property owners in the hinterland would be familiar with Darrel Hinson. For over 8 years Darrel operated DG Posi-Track Mulching, a machine that cleared and mulched at the same time. After seeing a real need for something that could safely tackle steep areas on properties, Darrel bought an innovative machine designed to do just that and has now started a brand new business, All Slopes Remote Control Mowing. “Sloping, hard to reach areas are not only a problem to keep clear, but also can be too dangerous for an average ride on, slasher or brush cutter,” says Darrel. “The Green Climber is designed for the maintenance and cleaning up of steep slopes. It is equipped with expandable undercarriage tracks

and a long range remote control up to 300m. The Green Climber is virtually unstoppable on any slope whether it’s working uphill or downhill and being remote controlled means there is no risk to life in the event of an accident,” says Darrel. “The flail mower is a 1300mm cut and spins at 3000 rpm producing a fine cut to most grasses and vegetation. The mowing deck is 1400mm wide which means it can fit through most places for easy access and when the going gets steep the track system can be hydraulically shifted out from 1300mm to 1700mm for even more stability on steep slopes and the mowing deck can be side shifted left or right 400mm like the track system for extra reach. “It’s also able to work in sandy areas and wet

‘THE raison d’être of life is to find beauty and calm in our hectic life,’ says Ian Mastin, the classical still life artist whose work is shown in the UK, Hongkong and New York. Hence his exhibition at Lasting Impressions Gallery in Kenilworth is aptly titled ‘Raison d’être 2015’. His small-scale paintings are a feast of luscious fruit, noble wines and cheeses, antique vessels and precious books. These intimate paintings exquisitely capture the beauty of the enjoyable moments so often overlooked in today’s world. Ian’s skill in depicting them in every delightful detail makes his work highly sought after by col-

Ride the Mary Valley and raise funds for charity DO you want to explore Mary Valley Country in South-East Queensland on horseback over three days in October? Here is the ride for you, and you can help raise funds for the local school chaplaincy committee at the same time. The inaugural “Trailblazers Charity Ride” is a three-day horse ride leaving Imbil Showgrounds on October 3 and riding west towards Borumba Dam through forestry, cattle stations and open country. You will be passing through country rarely opened to the public and

camping for two nights with the benefit of a ground crew to cart your food, showers, tents, horse feed and fencing. The $385 price tag includes meals and will help fund the Mary Valley chaplaincy program, which employs two chaplains in the valley, serving Kandanga, Amamoor and Jones Hill schools and Mary Valley College at Imbil. As part of their program, the chaplains meet a big need with “Breaky Clubs” where with the assistance of local volunteers and funding from the Imbil RSL, they feed up to 50

Spokesperson Bronwyn Kirkegard said the ride was a pro-active way for the chaplaincy program to shore up the small amount of Government funding it receives. “We believe our funding could face further cuts, and the community is not prepared to wait for this to happen,” she said. “We already know what a great job our chappies do, and we believe the consequences of this program ceasing will be very detrimental to our local schools and families. “The chappies are very pro-active and do a great job of working with children to identify needs before they become a problem. “They also work very

hard to assist the parents and staff in our school communities and have become a valued part of all four schools.” You can find out more about the school chaplaincy program at www.

Prepare for bushfire season As we enter bushfire season, have you prepared and cleared vegetation around your property? You may think that living near or in suburbia means you won’t be affected by bushfires. This is not the case. Bushland near highly populated areas can be impacted so here are some helpful tips to prepare for the bushfire season: - Ensure your house number is clearly displayed (for emergency service crews). - Mow your lawn regularly. - Remove excess combustible material (e.g. dry grass, dead leaves and branches) from your yard. - Move any flammable items such as wood piles, paper, boxes, crates and garden furniture well away from the house. - Trim low-lying branches (those under 2m in height). - Keep gutters clear of leaf litter. - Buy and test gutter plugs. - Enclose open areas under decks and verandas. - Install fine steel wire mesh screens on all windows and doors. - Make sure any LPG cylinders are upright and relief valves are pointed away from the house. - Check that pumps, generators and water systems are working. - Replace any damaged roofing and seal any gaps. - Check that your first-aid kit is fully stocked. Now is the time to ensure you and your family understand bushfire warning mes-

sages. Queensland Fire Emergency Service (QFES) bushfire warnings are issued to provide valuable and concise information during a bushfire event. There are three levels of warnings: - ADVICE: Monitor conditions and review your bushfire survival plan. - WATCH AND ACT: Conditions are changing. Start taking action and follow your Bushfire Survival Plan. - EMERGENCY WARNING: You are in danger. Action your Bushfire Survival Plan now., The type of warning issued by QFES is in line with the severity of the fire and the potential to impact property. The severity of a fire is determined by a number of factors including the temperature, humidity, wind speed and dryness of vegetation. It’s essential for all Queenslanders to educate themselves and their families and understand the levels of warning to ensure they aren’t confused or panicked if a warning is issued for their area. Remember: don’t wait on an official warning if you decide to leave. Emergency incidents can start quickly and threaten homes and lives within minutes. It is also a great time to sit down with your family and discuss a Bushfire Survival Plan and what steps to take. To find out more about bushfire preparedness, including bushfire warnings visit: www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/bushfires For more information contact Jackie Kirk, Volunteer Community Educator, Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade, 0427476067.

Suicide awareness for older people DID you know that persons over the age of 80 have the highest rate of suicide in Australia? Many people will know of someone who has attempted suicide or who has died by suicide and asked themselves the question – “Is there anything I could have done to prevent it?” COTA Queensland has launched its Suicide Awareness for Older People project to deliver peer education information sessions on the Sunshine Coast. Dale English will be presenting a talk at the Pomona & District Community House on Friday 25 September where you will learn about: • The risk factors for suicide • How to assist someone you know who you believe may be at risk • Where you can go for assistance on the Sunshine Coast if you are concerned about a friend or family member. Following Dale’s talk, experienced social worker and counsellor, Aimee Stanyer, will spend some time exploring ideas around mindfulness and selfcare. Mindfulness invites you to take a moment to focus on what is present for you and compassionate self-care helps us to refocus on practicing kindness with yourself. This is a time to reflect on you and what is important to you – essential in dealing with our busy and sometimes complicated lives. This free event, which includes a light lunch, is funded by Noosa Council and COTA. Date: Friday, September 25 Time: 10.00am – 12.30pm (approx.) Chat to any one of our Cooroy locals and you will encounter someone who has received Bowen from Lisa or they will know of someone who has been treated. When Lisa was asked “what is the single most important thing you would like people to know or recognize about Lakeridge Health and Beauty?” Lisa’s response was “Our high quality products and services. There are many bargain skin care and beauty treatments and products around, being delivered by people who aren’t specifically therapists. The old saying ‘you get what you pay for’ is true in the short and long term where your skin is concerned.” Ably assisting Lisa in the salon is Carly Brady. Carly is highly trained and experienced. With years of salon experience in IPL hair removal and skin rejuvenation, sensitive skin safe products and treatments, certified in Advanced Chemical Peels and she is a little bundle of product knowledge. Meditation for students WITH all the interest in meditation for children, one has to ask the question, how does meditation translate into your children’s daily lives? How can it help students facing the anxiety of their final examinations? Parents always ask how we can we help our kids to be happy, caring and calm in today’s world? Ideally, the education of children should integrate their intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual development. However, present day education is still primarily focused on academic achievement with some additional emphasis on sport and physical education. The emotional and spiritual development of children tends to receive less attention. Education is an important aspect in how their outer world, helping the child to acquire skills which eventually assist them in earning a living. Meditation deals with their inner world and their personal development in the art of living, whereby they can experience a balanced and productive life based on inner strength, positive actions and harmonious relationships. Anapana meditation is based on selfawareness and self-knowing. This type of learning, which deals with the human condition as opposed to intellectual assumptions, is the development of wisdom based on one’s own experiences. Anapana meditation is a simple, non-sectarian technique

www.cooroyrag.com.au

which involves awareness of natural respiration. Once learnt, the technique can be applied anywhere at any time in their life. Children who come to one-day or twoday Anapana courses follow a schedule of short meditation sessions interspersed with games and other activities for the student’s enjoyment. Small groups of children are guided by a Children’s Course Teacher. The course includes group discussions, games and creative activities, all of which aim at encouraging the expression of originality in each child and developing the skills to face the challenges he or she encounters in day-to-day life. The two-day children’s courses are held at the Vipassana Meditation Centre in Pomona. Experience has shown that children 8 years and over reap the most benefit. Separate one day courses are held for teenagers. The next children’s course at Pomona is on 28-29 September for 8 to 12 year olds and 30 September for teenagers,13 to 16 years. This teenager’s course will greatly benefit students who are preparing for their final examinations, increasing their confidence and improving their memory. If you would like your teenagers or children to attend our September courses please register online https:// www.dhamma.org/en/schedules/schrasmi or ring Jan Wood 54852968.

Naturopathy and Children WE all want our children to be the happiest and healthiest they can be. Healthy children have healthy weight, healthy immune defence, healthy gut function, healthy behaviour and healthy brain development. How exactly do we achieve this? Every day we are bombarded with so many mixed messages about how to look after our kids. People tell us our children are poor eaters, overweight, underweight, overactive or unfocused. There is certainly no shortage of ideas on how to best raise our children. One thing we are certain of, children have special health requirements. Children are not simply smaller versions of adults; they are physiologically different in the way their bodies work. Childhood is a time of immense social, intellectual and physical development and as a result children often have increased nutritional needs. Natural medicines for children must take into consideration a child’s individual requirements and stages of physical development. Fortunately there are many ways your naturopath can help your child achieve happier, healthier lives. ADHD, Learning Disorders & Behavioural Issues Several key nutrients can help support healthy brain function in your child including, zinc, magnesium, iron, B vitamins, folate, iron and vitamin C. Multivitamins and minerals, along with fish oils will provide your child with the nutrients they need for optimal brain function. Herbs such as ginkgo and brahmi have also been shown to help boost memory and learning. Supplementing with zinc and vitamin C has also been shown to boost the immune system to help them avoid colds and flues. While acute infections can be supported with antibacterial and anti-viral herbs such as cat’s claw and andrographis. Cod liver oil provides a source of vitamins A and D with omega-3 essential fatty acids. Vitamins A and D are key nutrients for healthy immune resistance which is vital in the management of food and environmental sensitivities and to provide protection against infection. A daily dose can help maintain a healthy immune system. Your Naturopath can also advise natural remedies for supporting coughs, eczema, asthma, hayfever, allergic cough, recurrent infections and ear infections. Some basic diet recommendations that can help support your child’s health include: • Ensure your child eats a full breakfast every day. • Include plenty of vegetables and fruit in their diet every day

• Make sure they drink plenty of pure water • Avoid or severely limit processed foods, additives and artificial flavours in their diet Growing children need a healthy lifestyle. Consider the following suggestions that your child may benefit from: • Identify your child’s interests and encourage active participation • Exercise and fresh air are important • Ensure adequate sleep and rest • Positive role models and family support is essential Naturopathic Doctor, Vanessa Doyle can provide your child with an individual program to help improve their health and assist them in reaching their full potential in life. COOROY AUTO WRECKERS & ENGINE CENTRE

The Noosa District Junior Rugby League Club again hosted the Sunshine Coast Mini Mod Carnival Gala day on the 23rd August 2015. There were 1200 participants from the under 7s – under 10s age groups from all over the Sunshine Coast, including teams from as far south as Caboolture, Stanley Rivers & Bribie Island and Gympie in the north. The kids were kept busy playing four games per team throughout the day, as well as getting

autographs from SC Falcons Q-cup and Melbourne Storm players. The SC Falcons mascot also made an appearance. The Noosa District Junior rugby League Committee, players, officials and supporters should be proud of the day hosted by the Club – it was a huge success and one the kids talk about for a long time. Many thanks to all our sponsors who also made this day happen.

COOROY pool was built in 1975 along with the Cooroy Dolphin Swimming club being founded at the same time with lots of fundraising from the school and the community. It was the first real (chlorinated) pool to be built in the Noosa shire (there was one little salt water pool in Tewantin). The teachers at the time John Porter and Jim Williams (Head of PE) were largely involved and went on to become the first committee members of the Club. There have been some key families over the years who have been hugely involved in the club, notably the Dayle family, O’Sullivan family, Christensen

family, Campbell family, McFayden family plus many more - all who have dedicated their time to helping the Cooroy Dolphin Swimming Club grow and be the fantastic we know today. Currently the swimming pool is a 25m heated swimming pool. This pool services our school and local surrounding feeder schools. The pool is the home to Cooroy Dolphins Swimming Club who run their club activities and carnivals from this pool. The Cooroy Rag is proud to have supported the Club with a $500 donation which went towards flags and lanes.

A golden performance by Impact boxers IMPACT Boxing put in a golden performance at the recent National Golden Gloves tournament. Benny “The Bulldog” Cameron-Hands stole the show when he stepped up a division to challenge the NZ champion Junior Tapau. Junior is the NZ 50kg junior champion & is on his way to Russia to represent NZ at the World junior championships. The step up in weight & class proved to be no problem for Benny as he totally dominated to win every round & in doing so he claimed his 5 National Golden Gloves Title. Luke Martin also gave the New Zealanders a few headaches when he took on their 56kg Elite champion. Luke took to his opponent from the opening bell & continued to get stronger with each round, being awarded the winner of the bout by way of a unanimous decision. Luke will now focus on winning the state title next week end which will form the first part of his pathway for Olympic

selection for Reo in 2016. Not to be outshined by the bigger boys, 34kg Coen Allman stepped up to the plate to take on Gaige Russell from Bundaberg & was declared the winner & new Champ! Sasha Allman, Taylah Robertson & Byron Mckeown were all awarded their silver gloves in bouts that honestly could have gone either way. Sam Cameron-Hands has just been elected the team captain to lead the Australian Junior Boxing team into the World Championships in Russia. Being elected the team captain is the highest honour attainable with in the team! We wish you & your team mates all the best of luck in your quest for GOLD! Impact Boxing will be hosting their annual boxing tournament at the Noosa District High School on Saturday October 3rd. Please come along & support our local kids as they strive to reach their goals!

Hurricane hits Brisbane LAST weekend saw Local Noosa athlete Bryce Hurricane Hegarty from Noosa Box Office take on the best of the best Amateur Boxers from all over Australia in the Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament held in Brisbane over four days, where each Boxer must weigh in every day and try to make it through each bout to the Final. Hegarty stopped his first opponent, a taller former National Champion three times during the bout to move through to the Final on Sunday which was also Hegarty’s 21st Birthday, The Final was a great matchup and bout which saw Hegarty step up to claim the bout in a points decision and win the Golden Gloves 75kg division for the second year in a row. For his efforts Hegarty was selected in the Australian Boxing Team which is headed to Germany in October to train, spar and compete over a two week period. As soon as Hegarty returns from Germany
