IT was a beautiful and moving day.

More than 50 people attended the official unveiling of a memorial to remember four people killed in one of Cooroy’s biggest tragedies.

Derek Lange, 11; his mother June, 30; Shayne Parker, 9; and Ricky Von Blanckensee, 18, all died in a tragic accident in

Cooroy Creek on Saturday 5 December 1981.

Four decades later, the families of Derek, June, Shayne and Ricky came together on Saturday 1 April for the unveiling of a timber bench seat and plaque dedicated to their loved ones.

They were joined by Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart, councillors Amelia Lorentson and Karen Finzel,

Noosa Council’s Heritage Coordinator Jane Harding, Robert Skelton MP, members of the Cooroora Woodworkers Club, Cooroy Rag staff and the community.

This editor was honoured to start the ceremony and read a poem and statement on behalf of the families. Cr Stewart then officially opened the memorial and the families

cut the ribbon.

Shayne Parker’s father, George, said the memorial is greatly appreciated by the families deeply affected by this tragic accident.

“We would like to thank Alex from the Cooroy Rag along with staff members, local business owners and my old work colleague Max Arbuthnot for all their strong support in making this day possible.

“This seat and plaque will serve as a loving reminder to those lives lost and for the families and the public to remember them by.”

The memorial was a community effort made possible by the generosity and hard work of Max Arbuthnot, Steve and Ian and the Cooroora Woodworkers Club, Jane Harding and Noosa Council, Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart,

Andrew Porter, Cordwells Concrete, Matt Purcell and Cooroy Rag staff Alex, Judy, Jodi, Kristina and Peta.

It is located behind the Cooroora Woodworkers Club on Lower Mill Road, Cooroy, where it will remain as a legacy to Derek, June, Shayne and Ricky now and into the future.

From the desk of your roaming editor

MY family and I recently played tourists in the Mary Valley.

We booked tickets to experience a historic rail journey on the restored vintage steam engine, the Mary Valley Rattler.

Even though I grew up in Cooroy and live in Pomona, I am ashamed to admit I hadn’t been on the Rattler before.

And I wish I had gone sooner.

It was fabulous.

From the moment we arrived, all the volunteers were helpful and friendly and oh-so-knowledgeable.

We loved rocking along with the windows wide open, waving to cars at the level crossings and getting a new perspective of the Mary Valley.

I used to ride my motorbike out that way regularly but being on the Rattler gave me a different view of the beautiful valley, villages and farms.

We found watching the steam engine being turned around at Amamoor fascinating and enjoyed a delicious lunch (pre-ordered from the train) on our return to Gympie at the Rattler’s Rusty Rails Cafe.

If you haven’t ridden the Rattler yet, I highly recommend it.

Bouquets and Brickbats

BOUQUETS to Mayor Clare and councillors for their attendance at the Cooroy Creek memorial. It was deeply appreciated by the family and friends who attended.

BOUQUETS to Pomona. Recently in Pomona stopping for a toilet break and my friend left her backpack hanging on the hook therein. I just wanted to acknowledge the friendly, kind and helpful people of

Pomona who helped us in our search. Thank you to Warwick at the council depot, the lovely people at the newsagent, SpillDEBeans cafe, an unknown I met at the toilets that had been serviced who gave me the name of the likely keeper of the backpack to start the search, and finally Jason who drove back to town to deliver our lost luggage. Together we solved the mystery and we are grateful

to have experienced the wonderful community spirit of Pomona.

BRICKBATS to the driver of a 4WD that deliberately ran over a small red-bellied black snake as it slithered across the road towards the creek on Reserve Street, Pomona (near the IGA). What a low act, especially as the car in front of you stopped and then went wide around the snake. Karma will get you.

Pomona’s pedestrian problem

A GROUP of concerned residents is calling for pedestrian crossings on Pomona’s main thoroughfare.

Save Noosa Hinterland is advocating for two pedestrian crossings in Pomona: one on Factory Street and one on Hill Street.

Save Noosa Hinterland committee member Nick Cooke said as a representative of the group, he has been requesting pedestrian crossings on several roads in Pomona since 2020.

“Pomona is busier than ever and is facing high volumes of traffic and quarry trucks. The safety risks are immense and they are made worse by the severe

lack of safe crossings and paths.

“As a Save Noosa Hinterland representative, I have been requesting safe crossings and paths across several roads in Pomona since 2020, particularly on roads the trucks travel, but unfortunately am still requesting them years later. I have also been requesting temporary crossings for immediate safety.

“I have sent emails, submitted to the budget consultation and raised in person with councillors, the mayor and MP Sandy Bolton, including in public forums and at the quarry roundtables.”

State MP Sandy Bolton said she has advocated, and will continue to advocate, on behalf of residents withTransport and Main Roads (TMR) for pedestrian crossings on state-managed roads in Pomona. "There is no doubt that there is a necessity for pedestrian crossings on Factory Street and Hill Street for seniors, children and others who rely on being able to cross to access essential services.”

A TMR spokesperson said they are liaising with Noosa Council in regard to any potential future crossings on the town’s state-controlled roads.

LiveLife Helping Our Community

As part of LiveLife Pharmacies goal of giving back to the Community, we are opening submissions to local Charity, Community and Support Groups to participate in our “LiveLife Community Support Program”.

Each group chosen to participate will be allocated a specific month and will receive funds donated by the local LiveLife Pharmacies.

“We understand Noosa Council is considering the best location and type of pedestrian facilities for Pomona through its placemaking initiative.”

Noosa Council's Environment and Sustainable Development Director Kim Rawlings said pedestrian crossings, where state roads are concerned, are the responsibility of the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).

“However, council recently endorsed a placemaking program for Pomona which, among many other things, will look at movement and access through the town. “This process will help to

inform future planning for roads and footpaths within Pomona, as well as consider the need for infrastructure such as pedestrian crossings.

“As a key stakeholder, council looks forward to working closely with TMR as the placemaking project progresses.”

Pomona and District Chamber of Commerce (PDCC) president Phil Moran said the placemaking study is an opportunity to step back and plan the future of the town.

“PDCC has been lobbying for this because Pomona is perfect for it.

“All these matters will be discussed during the placemaking initiative.”

Ms Bolton said they welcome Noosa Council's Pomona placemaking initiative to help determine the best locations for connectivity and types of crossings.

"Our ongoing advocacy includes whether there are any possible temporary measures that can be utilised safely and TMR have responded over the years with the need to work with council's precinct planning,

therefore the placemaking initiative is great news," she said.

But Mr Cooke said they cannot wait for the completion of the council's placemaking study to get these crossings.

“The safety risks are too great. Parents are worried for their kids and just want them to be able to get off the bus and cross the road safely.

“Every day, pedestrians are being put at risk on these roads.

“Factory Street connects one side of Pomona to the other and is also a quarry truck route.

"There are children as young as five years old crossing Hill Street to the dog park after school, on a dangerous bend with cars and trucks flying past, pulling out of the servo and out of Subway Ave. Then there are the elderly and disabled.

“We need crossings on these roads immediately, even temporary crossings until permanent ones can be installed,” Mr Cooke said.

Cooroy's Maple Street Surgery director Bill Brown said the Cooroy and the hinterland community is growing rapidly but important health services like doctors are simply not keeping up with this growth.

“One Cooroy practice has closed its books and another only has one doctor.

“And we all know the closing of doctors’ surgeries in Imbil and Pomona recently has only added to this shortage.

“It has effectively been up to Maple Street Surgery to try to fill this shortfall in healthcare.

“We are fortunate to have 13 doctors (three on maternity leave), but people need to have some patience and understanding that we are doing the very best we can given the pressure both staff and doctors are now under.

“We have had staff need mental health breaks as a result of patients displaying abusive and aggressive behaviour."

Mr Brown said every practice's costs have gone up “massively” since COVID but Medicare benefits have not and this is why most

practices on the Coast are no longer bulk billing to stay in business.

"The current state government has also recently redefined the definition of a consulting doctor and will soon impose a 4.75 per cent of 'gross income' payroll tax which, when implemented, will either add $15 to the cost of a standard appointment or incur a $5 surcharge as this is a tax the business is expected to pay.

"I would encourage people to look into this and speak to their local member.”

Mr Brown said Maple Street Surgery is a mixed billing practice where bulk billing is always at the discretion of the doctor.

"Unfortunately, the way things are going, bulk billing will soon be a thing of the past given ongoing wage pressures and other costs rapidly developing in the space.

“This is not what we want either but like most other practices, we have had to adapt to a changing environment.

"We now have to ask for a deposit for new patients as many simply don't turn up when they know they won't get bulk billed.

"We also have six pages of people who hung up

or refused to pay after a telehealth appointment, hence why we need to get a deposit."

Australian Medical Association president Professor Robson said, over successive governments before this one, there was a Medicare freeze that lasted almost a decade.

"Like all businesses, the costs of providing medical care go up each year, with increases in wages for staff, rent, medical equipment, cleaning, electricity, technology and insurance, and these increases must all be covered by the fees a doctor charges.

"Years of frozen indexation means that a patient's Medicare rebate is permanently lower than what it would have otherwise been had the freeze not been put in place. This is one of the key reasons why patients are facing larger out-of-pocket costs when they visit their GP.

"We estimate since the beginning of the freeze, close to $4 billion of funding has been lost from general practice around the country, and that's funding that goes to Australian patients who are seeing doctors."

The AMA said critical problems of access and affordability in general practice can't be addressed without better indexation of Medicare.

In the meantime, Mr Brown said Maple Street Surgery has been fortunate to have two new female doctors start recently; both are currently taking new patients.

"We have six to 10 doctors on the floor most days, except Saturdays when we generally have three.

"We do have appointments available every day but please make sure you call at 8 am to ensure an appointment.

"We also have online bookings available and would encourage you to use that option."

Stolen sign returned decades later

A SIGN stolen from Cooroy over 20 years ago has been mysteriously returned.

Cooroy Barbers owner Graham Causon came into work one day to find a barbershop sign (pictured) along with a note.

“A lady came in when I wasn’t here and left it with a note,” Graham said.

According to the note, the woman lived in Cooroy 26 years ago when her “silly boyfriend at the time” stole the sign.

“I have always felt bad about it, and at Hebrews

13:18 it says we should be honest in all things.

“So I [sic] return it to its home and hope it can be hung at the barbershop where it belongs.

“I’m sorry it took so long.”

It is signed: love “a good conscience”.

At the time, the barbershop sign used to hang out the front of Toby Brown’s real estate agency on Maple Street when barber Peter Robinson had a chair at the back.

The real estate agency, beside Springs Pharmacy, is now part of LiveLife

Pharmacy on Maple Street.

Peter ’s son, Danny Robinson said his dad had the barbershop there for many years.

“He was at the back of Toby Brown’s real estate then moved to a shop in Tewantin.”

Peter sadly passed away over a decade ago.

Long-time local Thelma Ludwig said he was a character.

“We all called him Peter Robbie and he was a character in his own right, always ready for a chat.”

Council addresses Pomona tree

ment Director Kim Rawlings said council issued an approval two years ago for the removal of the tree.

“The tree, which was located on private property, was causing damage to infrastructure both on the property where it was growing and on neighbouring properties.”

MP in Imbil for pumped hydro project

THE Queensland Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen, and for Public Works and Procurement, was in Imbil last month.

MP Mick De Brenni visited Borumba Dam to talk to the local community and give an update on the pumped hydro project.

The Borumba Dam Pumped Hydro is a 2-gigawatt energy storage facility that will be connected to the existing electricity transmission network by line corridors.

Mr De Brenni said he felt the visit was a positive one. “We had the opportunity to talk with locals and receive feedback on the project. Overall, the feedback I received was positive.

“The Borumba Pumped Hydro Energy Storage Project (Borumba PHES Project) will make the region home to one of the most important renewable energy projects in the nation.”

Mr De Brenni said the Borumba PHES Project is the cornerstone of the Queensland SuperGrid, which will deliver 64,000

jobs across the Queensland region and 36,000 jobs in the green economy.

“Already we have teamed up with local businesses, the Lake Borumba Fish Stocking Association has been providing water transport, and we have secured helicopter transportation with McDermott Aviation in Cooroy and earthmoving works with a company in Kilcoy.

“And there will be a significant announcement for local businesses coming up.”

Mr De Brenni said during his visit he had the opportunity to meet with landowners about the connection to the SuperGrid.

“Some have concerns around transition line options and we are listening closely to work through those issues.

“Queensland Hydro and Powerlink are delivering the project and will be continuing their public consultation and providing further updates on transmission corridors and the project.

“And I will be back to the

region many times.”

Mr De Brenni said they have been working for over a year on a report for the government before moving onto the next stage.

“The government will be receiving it soon, which means we will be able to proceed to major geotechnical works, which is the next phase of the project and will commence next year.

“The final construction phase will be completed by the end of the decade.”

Mr De Brenni said once complete, the Borumba PHES Project will play a big part in cutting energy emissions for Queensland by 96 per cent.

“By 2032, our plan is to see Queensland's energy supply be 70 per cent renewable energy.

“This project is critical to enable that renewable energy source to be soaked up and returned to the grid when needed.

“Australia cannot meet its emission targets without this project.”

A COOROY legend has helped first-hand to preserve Cooroy’s butter factory history.

Former Wide Bay Co-Op Butter Factory worker Alan Kenzler spent six hours with Noosa Council and a film crew at the Cooroy Butter Factory to document what it was like working there during its heyday of production.

Alan worked at the Maple Street factory for 16 years from 1950 to 1966, first as a general hand, then a cream tester, a cream grader, and in the main position as a cream pasteuriser.

Noosa Council Heritage Coordinator Jane Harding said that as a former employee, Alan has been able to provide them with a detailed, firsthand account of the daily process of butter making, the functions of each room in the building, and some of the other staff

worked at the site.

“The Cooroy Butter Factory, formerly a hub of industry in the community, has evolved into a thriving arts centre. It's important that heritage buildings find new life and continue to be used but the original use remains at the heart of a building's story.

“Visitors to the butter factory are always interested to learn more about how the building operated originally.

“Alan’s account is both fascinating and a valuable contribution to the historic record.”

Filmmaker Chris Peckham from Source Media said to capture a story from a first-person perspective is vital.

“Alan lived and breathed the butter factory as a full-time employee. His story is unique and will tell others about day-to-day life in a bustling local workplace from an era that is now lost to the large-scale farming and production of today.”

When completed, the film, funded by the Noosa Council Heritage Levy, will play in the Butter Factory Arts Centre and will also be viewable via the Heritage Noosa platform (heritage. noosa.qld.gov.au).

If anyone has photos or memorabilia of the Cooroy Butter Factory that could be included in the film, please contact the project team at heritage@noosa.qld.gov.au or phone 5329 6534.

Family farewells former Cooroy vet

Multi Award Winning

A FORMER Cooroy vet has passed away at the age of 88.

Evan Singleton was the owner and veterinary surgeon of what is now Cooroora Veterinary Clinic.

Daughter Debbie Jeppesen said Evan ran two successful practices in Cooroy and Noosa throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

“Upon moving to Cooroy, Dad set up his own practice at his home in Black Mountain.

“His practice was very busy. The phone rang constantly and that buzzer on the door of the old surgery would be pressed at all hours of the night.

“Dad would attend to all no matter what time of day, through pouring rain and floods. He earned the trust and loyalty of many owners of both small and large animals.

“It was common for him to return home after attending such calls as an overnight calving case bearing a box

of tomatoes or a dozen eggs – an indication that the farmer couldn't afford to pay.”

Debbie said many a morning Evan would arrive at his Lanyana Way vet surgery to be greeted by a box of kittens or puppies left on the doorstep overnight.

“Every single one of those animals was always taken home to Black Mountain to find a home. At one count we had 14 dogs; only two of them were ours.”

Evan volunteered as a judge for the beef and dairy cattle sections at local shows and vetted at endurance ride events whenever he could.

“He also assisted the Cooroy Pony Club many times by giving lectures to help the riders achieve their various certificates.”

Evan began his veterinary career after winning a scholarship to study veterinary science at the University of Queensland.

“It was at UQ that Dad joined the Armed Forces and completed his national service.”

Then in 1968, Evan was sent around the world by the Department of Primary

Industries to investigate AI [artificial insemination] techniques.

“Dad completed his PhD on The Effect of Heat on the Bovine Testes of the Bull and conducted many artificial insemination schools to teach local Cooroy farmers the technique to assist in their breeding endeavours.”

Debbie said Evan sold his Black Mountain practice and the Noosa Junction surgery to take a position with Australian Quarantine Inspection Services in Brisbane.

“But he never forgot his years servicing the Cooroy area and its locals as their vet and spoke fondly of his practice days.”

Evan continued to work for AQIS until 1999 when he offered private consultancy until the age of 82.

He passed away in Brisbane on 13 March 2023, at the age of 88.

Evan will be remembered as a lover of all creatures great and small, as well as his dedication to his family and profession. He is survived by his wife Nerida, seven children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Student learns the tricks of the trade

FOR the past five years, Cooroy Landscape Supplies has had a Year 10 work experience student from Noosa District SHS come and learn the tricks of the trade.

Owner Siona Howard said this year they had Darcy

come and help for a week. “He was a lovely young man who was willing to jump in and give everything a go.

“Darcy helped out with deliveries, customer orders, bagging the products and driving the forklift.

“There was a lot to learn about the products and mechanical training.”

Siona said it was a pleasure to have Darcy on board.

“Thanks for all your help, Darcy.”

Pomona Distillery to expand

POPULAR business, Pomona Distilling Co., is expanding.

The restaurant on Reserve Street has approval for a smokehouse and charcoal grill beside its current premises.

Owner Robin Yates said the additional kitchen, cold room, bar and toilets will be built behind the existing

bar.

“Entrance to the smokehouse will be through from the bar.

“It will have the same look as the Distillery, with recycled and upcycled timbers, but will offer an alternative with specialty meats such as tomahawks and ribs.”

Robin said he hopes the

expansion, which will create an extra 25 jobs, will be complete by Christmas.

“Now that we have approval I hope to start construction in May/June and have it completed by Christmas.”

The smokehouse will be open the same hours as the Distillery: Wednesday to Sunday.

I HAVE been on a long journey to understanding our local farming. Last year I worked with the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) on the Agri-Hub project, where we held numerous public consultations and a symposium to identify the big issues and the next steps. It climaxed with the NBRF Grow for Noosa Gala where Matt Golinski created a three-course meal from a smorgasbord of local ingredients, all from within 60 km. He spoke of the importance of supporting local farmers, learning to grow and prepare these foods, and getting them into our diets.

There is a cornucopia of foods that prosper in our subtropical environment which are foreign to most of us and full of potential cooking bliss. Permaculture Noosa is at the centre of this evolution. The pavilion will be the first, key step to taking up Matt’s challenge by growing subtropical foods like arrowroot and sumbung and getting them into our daily diets.

This is a place where you will be able to grow crops, pick and prepare them in the kitchen, and leave with seedlings so you can join in the journey.

However, the pavilion is still under construction and needs you to join in the cob or mud wall-building workshops. Please see permaculturenoosa.com.au for more information.

Back to the vision of a food-producing, climatechange-resilient, healthy, foodie, Noosa economy, distribution and facilitating farmers back onto the land are two big issues. We need a tool for measuring the value change from degraded land to highly fertile, regenerated land and can we turn the value of the transition to highly fertile land into a monetary measurement and sell this to those who support the project?

The cost of regenerating the land is great and the value gained from agriculture produced does not actually support the change in land

use (in our free market economy).

One idea is to create a currency, like coupons or carbon credits, that can be traded in Noosa and is based on verified emission savings. For example, they can be linked to carbon sequestration from biochar from our own tip which is mixed with mulch and used for agriculture. Also, they can be tied to emissions savings from solar and batteries. The money raised would facilitate these community-building projects.

The big picture is to connect the dots from Matt Golinski’s words and the family garden to the wider community health and Noosa food resiliency. This includes facilitating local agri-business through many measures and groups. From my experience, we all have a shared vision. We are just working on the map to get there.

Please note this is my personal opinion and does not represent the position of council. Tom

NOOSA Council has called for a meeting with the state’s resources minister seeking a review of Queensland’s rating system to lessen the financial impact that dramatic land value increases are having on ratepayers.

Many Noosa land values have doubled in 12 months and if we simply feed the Valuer-General’s new valuations into our rating structure, our ratepayers face average increases of around 44 per cent at a time when many in our community can ill afford it.

In Queensland, under the Local Government Act, councils calculate rates as a percentage of land values, as assessed by the state’s valuer, the Valuer-General. It’s disappointing the state government opted to conduct land valuations in Noosa for the second consecutive year rather than every three years, which is the usual process. After such significant increases last year, Council requested the state not to put our shire’s property owners through this process again so soon, given

the floods we experienced in 2022. Similarly, there seems to be little understanding as to why land valuations were conducted two years in a row for some councils and not for others. For example, Sunshine Coast Council did not incur a second consecutive valuation, whereas Gympie and Noosa Shire did.

Councillors are committed to keeping rate rises to a minimum, through the budget process, with staff working on a range of scenarios to lessen the impact of the sharp property valuation increases come budget time.

Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig will join me to meet the minister in the coming weeks and we both look forward to putting our two councils’ cases forward to ensure stability and certainty for our community and our ratepayers going forward. Council has reviewed the short-stay local law 12 months since it was introduced in an effort by Council to regulate the use of Noosa properties for short-stay letting. We are adding two new temporary

compliance officers who will help work through the backlog of short-stay applications, given the significant volume that we received early on. They will also help to increase enforcement and identify unapproved short-stay properties and speed up the approvals process which the industry has asked for. With the Local Law, approval process and complaints hotline, we’ve been able to implement a code of conduct for short-stay guests, compile a healthy database of short-stay properties, and begin to identify owners not playing by the rules. About 2,500 property owners have applied for approval under the local law in the first 12 months, which is a good result.

Finally, there’s still time to make use of the free holiday buses, back for the Easter break. Park and ride the free electric 065 Loop Bus into Hastings Street from the AFL grounds on Weyba Road. You can choose to park your car anywhere along the loop bus route and simply jump on. The Go Noosa Free Holiday Bus program is delivered in partnership with Translink.

Until next month, stay safe, Clare

Federal Member for Wide Bay

WITH the threat of natural disasters in Wide Bay – like bushfires and floods and our many dangerous roads – it’s important that people can get the call out for help when they need to contact emergency services. We also need to make sure that families and businesses can connect and communicate, so it’s important for the government to keep working with telecommunication companies to extend and improve the mobile phone and broadband networks throughout Wide Bay.

The former Liberal and Nationals Coalition Government understood this and extended the mobile phone network into black spot areas by providing subsidies for telecommunication companies to boost coverage in locations where it wasn’t economically viable for them to do so alone. Across Australia, the Coalition Government’s Mobile Phone Black Spot Program leveraged $875 million to invest in 1,270 new mobile stations.

In Wide Bay, the Coalition Government worked with

telcos to extend the mobile phone network to 19 locations, including Wolvi Mountain Road, Kin Kin, Boreen Point and Cootharaba, and there are still many locations across the 14,227 square kilometre Wide Bay electorate that need coverage. The new Regional Connectivity and Mobile Black Spots grants support network operators to extend communications coverage to rural and regional locations. Licensed telecommunications carriers, or a consortium made up of a carrier, state or local governments, regional development bodies, or industry, business, or community groups can apply for funding to deliver new place-based or improved broadband and mobile services in regional areas.

A project noticeboard

has been established to assist communities to form partnerships with the telecommunications sector to develop applications for funding, and project proposals can be uploaded to the noticeboard by 31 May 2023. Further information is available at www.infrastructure.gov.au/rcp

Just as we need to continue to invest in new and upgraded roads, we also need to make new investments to continually improve and extend communications networks, just as the former coalition government did. I am continuing to make representations to the Minister for Communications to encourage the Australian Government to address black spots in Wide Bay so people in all communities can stay in touch. Working Group met last month to view proposed changes to address the issues impacting this area. After four years of advocacy to get to the ‘pointy end’, we look forward to sharing what will be implemented immediately, and those that will take longer through legislative change. With Easter coming up and secured extra resources, spread the word that there is a zero-tolerance approach to anyone doing wrong by our community whether speeding, driving on dunes, hooning or any other unacceptable behaviour.

New land valuations for the Noosa Electorate have been released, and it may cause concern for those already having financial difficulties. These valuations do not determine how much local governments across Queensland have to charge in rates, as it is councils who decide how much is required for their next budgets and use valuations to calculate. We have posted to SandyBolton.

com/Land-Valuations-Local-Government-Rate-Calculations-March-2023 an explanation of this, as well as details if you require a review of your property valuation and land tax exemptions.

As I write, after a busy week in Parliament, a reminder that you can view Parliament live anytime via Parliament.qld.gov.au/ Work-of-the-Assembly/ Live-and-Archived-Broadcasts, and my speeches are shared to SandyBolton. com/Parliament/Speeches, outlining the rationale on how Noosa’s vote is utilised! This includes the Strengthening Community Safety Bill in endeavours to reduce youth crime, and my speech outlined the failures and the expectation of residents for longer-term solutions.

In an Adjournment speech, I spoke of recent concerns regarding some conflict between First Nations people in relation to the Cooloola Great Walk, requesting that any final approvals not be issued until there is some clarity and resolution.

Bringing Kabi Kabi back to their country should not be negatively accompanied by what seems to be questioned on Native Title and other processes, and as part of ‘truth telling’ at the start of Path to Treaty, this is a good place to start open communications.

Raising funds for Noosa’s own

LOCAL not-for-profit

WomenKind Australia Inc. is raising funds to build a sanctuary for women and families in Noosa affected by domestic abuse or homelessness.

WomenKind Australia Inc. founder Josanne Falla said the sanctuary will provide a space to rest and recoup after domestic abuse, or offer some respite from homelessness.

“As we all know, there is a massive housing crisis in our region with so many women couchsurfing with friends or family, or living in their cars.

“This is extremely dangerous for a woman with or without kids and we, the community, must come up with our own answers.

“Our aim is to buy, build or lease land to accommodate a cottage or tiny home and gradually increase the available space in the future.”

Josanne said their goal is to raise $500,000 to start with, through their ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign.

“There is the opportunity for businesses, corporates and philanthropists to buy a brick at $5,000 each and help us start from the

ground up with the creation of this property.

“This will be a tax-deductible expense and they will also have their name inscribed on the property for perpetuity – their name will live on forever and be gratefully remembered.”

Josanne said only 90 of these bricks remain to be secured.

“Help us, help our women and families that no one is either seeing or acknowledging or not moving quickly enough.”

Visit womenkind.com.au for details.

ENVIRONMENTAL group, Backyards for Biodiversity, promotes the importance and potential of urban areas for native biodiversity in South East Queensland, with the aim to educate residents as to the beauty and environmental value of plants and wildlife and the ways that nature can enrich our lives.

Backyards for Biodiversity committee member Robyn Combes is the guest speaker at the Noosa Parks Association’s Friday Environment Forum on 14 April.

Robyn has lived on the Sunshine Coast since the

early 1980s and has learnt an enormous amount about ecology, geology, flora and fauna on their small property on the Blackall Ranges, east of Montville.

At the forum, she will detail the aims of Backyards for Biodiversity and the benefits to biodiversity that result from replacing some lawn or exotic species with local native plants.

Robyn will also outline how to create such an environment with reference to the support and resources offered by Backyards for Biodiversity. By creating a backyard for biodiversity in

an urban area, we can help support our wildlife.

Everyone is welcome at the NPA Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville. The forum starts at 10:30 am and morning tea is available from 10 to 10:25 am. Entry is $5 by ‘tap & go’ at the door and includes morning tea/coffee.

Join the bird observers at 8:30 am in the car park for interpretive birding.

And on 28 April, Geoff Acton from Zero Emissions Noosa will speak about community batteries. For more information visit noosaparks.org.au.

ANZAC, we will remember

“My personal recollection is one of my father who sometimes spoke tearfully of his older brother whose body is buried somewhere in Damascus. He was only 11 when he lost a brother.

“There was a maternal aunt who would respond to an unexpected knock at the door: ‘This might be Albert now’, meaning this could be her son coming home.

“He was a crew member on a plane that was shot down just off Milne Bay. It was never recovered.”

John said there remains a vacant spot in that family that will never be filled.

“Of course, there are organisations such as RSL Legacy and others who do great work caring for these families but as I’ve already said, that vacancy will never be completely filled.”

THE term ANZAC was formed over 100 years ago during the First World War.

An acronym, ANZAC stands for Australia and New Zealand Army Corps.

A National Serviceman from 1958 and Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch life member,

Gallipoli, “a lost cause during the First World War”.

“It was termed ‘the war to end all wars’ but then many were killed and injured during the Second World War, the Malayan skirmish, Korea, Vietnam, The Gulf War, Afghanistan, Iraq and many other bloody

men and women lost their lives and tens of thousands were injured and lives were shattered as a result of war. Cities, villages and indeed whole countries had to be rebuilt.”

John said everyone knows of families who lost a father, brother, sister or a close family member, whose bodies remain in a foreign land and some who have never been

John said this Anzac Day, Tuesday 25 April, think of the families who had members torn from them as a result of war and the devastation that resulted.

“This year as you attend a dawn service, witness a march and remember those who served and those who paid the supreme sacrifice, remember too, the families of the Veterans and pay tribute to them.”

Noisy cuckoo flies the nest

A COOROY resident thought she had a very noisy, hungry magpie in her yard.

Gillian Bradley said the bird was making such a racket, it sounded like it was dying.

“It turns out it wasn’t a magpie but a rather large, hungry, baby channel-billed cuckoo demanding breakfast from its hardworking surrogate crow parents.”

The channel-billed cuckoo is known as the largest brood parasite in the world because it sneaks its eggs into other birds’ nests and tricks them into raising its young.

Straight from the horse’s mouth

on condition but not needing a high-energy diet. Hygain has a large range that is suited to these horses –Showtorque, Grotorque, Trucare, Release, Trugain, and Honey B; Stance Copra; Johnson’s Weight Gain.

Performer, workhorse mix … just to name a few.

HAY there. Do you find it completely confusing when you go into a produce store looking for the right diet for your horse/ponies? You are not the only one.

Let’s start with the good doer/paddock ornament. You cannot beat the good old pony pellet. They still have the minerals and vitamins added and are the most cost-effective within their range: Hygain – Allrounder, Zero; Barastoc Calm Performer; Mitavite – Economix, Cool Cusada, Xtra Cool; Coprice Cool Conditioner; Prydes EasiFeed Essentials; Johnson’s Horse and Pony.

Now the horse that is underweight and needs to put

The metabolic horse/ founder pony: Hygain –Balanced, Zero ICE and Munga; Barastoc – Meta Safe, Low-Cal Cruiser; Prydes – Easisport grainfree low-sugar horse pellet; Johnson’s – Fibre Balancer, Alfalfa Plus. Micrbeet, Speedi-Beet, Maxisoy, Founder Guard and Khonkes Trim can also be added to help get the essential vitamins and minerals into your metabolic horse.

The pleasure pony: pony club, trail riding, weekend hobby riding needing something low energy. Hygain –Balanced, Zero, ICE Honey B, Tru Gain, Allrounder; Mitavit – Munga, Xtra Cool, Cool Crusada. Johnson’s –Horse and Pony; Barastoc – Sport and Leisure, barley flakes and molasses.

Performance/show horse: Hygain – Show Torque, Balanced, ICE, Tru gain; Johnson’s – Horse and Pony, Platinum Low GI; Stance

Copra; Barastoc – Complete

Older horses: Hygain –Tru Care, Tru Gain, Equine Senior, Honey B, Fibre Essentials; Mitavite – Gumnuts; Johnson’s – Old Timer, Speedi-Beet, Microbeet, Maxisoy and Fibre Balancer, Alfalfa Plus are very good to add to the grain mixes as they add moisture and are an easy way to get fibre into the older horse who most likely have some teeth issues as well. Brood mares, foals, young horses and stallions: Hygain –Grotorque, Balanced, Tru Gain; Mitavite – Breeda, Studgrow: Prydes – BioMare Cubes, Easifeed Dry stud balancer for dry pasture; Johnson’s- Mare and Foal; Barastoc – Breed and Grow.

There are many more brands out there but these are some of the more commonly available in your local produce stores. Please remember that this is a basic guide to feeding your horses and it is most important that your horses have a minimum of one per cent of their body weight in roughage per day.

It is also important to remember that the amount prescribed on the bag of feed you choose to purchase is also only a guide to feeding your horse. Overfeeding your horse causes all sorts of problems, from health problems to behaviour problems.

or gardens.

“I have had multiple conversations, during and after the project completion, including with parents about how the mural project has inspired their children to paint and draw more and their interest in jobs as an artist. This is such a buzz for me as that wasn’t a possibility I had as a kid.

“It’s certainly clear to me the ongoing connections that have been created between myself and future generations of our town, with my walks down the streets of Pomona now including so many more interactions and questions from inquisitive young people and their families.

CLASSROOM walls at Pomona State School are all the brighter and more beautiful thanks to a colourful mural of local fauna and flora by artist Tia Carrigan. Owner of This Bird Florist & Creative Studio in Pomona, Tia said through the art project The Bees, The Birds

and the Garden They Live In, she had the opportunity to chat with students.

“The project allowed me to have all manner of conversations ranging from art and painting to jobs in artistic industries, to the science around our local wildlife, to their own joy of art, animals

“I feel very privileged to have had this experience in this project.”

The project was made possible thanks to a Regional Arts Development Fund grant – a partnership between the Queensland State Government and Noosa Shire Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

THE annual Cooroy State School Easter Bonnet Parade was egg-cellent again this year.

Students from Prep, Year One and Year Two showed

off their creative bonnet creations to the applause of fellow students as they made their way through the school to the hall for a parade with parents.

Even the Easter Bunny made an appearance.

School lops locks for cancer charity

STUDENTS and staff at Good Shepherd Lutheran College have said goodbye to their locks for charity.

Fourteen Good Shepherd students and two staff members pledged to cut or shave their hair to raise funds for this year’s World’s Greatest Shave campaign.

Year 5 student Nina Hughes shaved her head for the cause – and for her mum who is battling cancer.

“It is hard that my mum has cancer and I really wanted to help her but there is nothing that I could do, and then The World’s

Greatest Shave came along and I wanted to do it with all of my heart,” Nina said. Nina was supported by her friend Phoebe Sayer (Year 5) who also shaved her head on stage with Nina in front of their peers.

Nina has raised over $10,000 alone.

In its eleventh year of supporting the campaign, the entire college supported the campaign through a variety of fundraising activities including bake sales, sausage sizzles, friendship bracelets, busking stations, Crazy Hair Day and

carwash.

Good Shepherd Pastoral Care Coordinator Damien Johns said it was amazing to see the community come together and go well past their initial target of $25,000.

“This year’s result of close to $35,000 is a record for the college, and as we love to break records, I’m sure we will aim even higher next year.

“Good Shepherd has raised well over $200,000 in its 11-year history of raising money for blood cancer research,” Damien said.

Seven decades of bowls

With six weeks remaining in Wednesday night’s business bowls, Cops and Robbers and Page Furnishers are fighting over the top spot on the ladder but are being pursued relentlessly by Britten Built closely following in second place.

Thursday night’s Hi Rollers also have six weeks remaining. Currently, the Yandina team is on top just eight ahead of Hot Shots, with Grasshoppers a further six behind. The leading teams are all yet to have a bye though, so things may all change in the coming weeks.

FOLLOWING WWII, lawn bowling clubs began to spring up around the country. Perhaps it was seen as a more sociable and less vigorous activity than tennis, football and cricket which were the major sporting activities at the time. Lawn bowls also enabled a broader cross-section of the community to participate, including women.

The Cooroy Bowls Club

has seen many changes in the 77 years since three Cooroy neighbours – Bob Kerr, Jack Bennett and Bill Holzapfel – decided, over a cup of tea one Sunday morning, that starting a bowls club sounded like a good idea. The current green that the club plays on today is named after Bob Kerr.

The 2023 Hinterland competition has just concluded. Although they didn’t feature in the finals, both the men’s and women’s teams gener-

ally acquitted themselves well. The ladies in particular finished on a high, winning their last three matches. Two of the matches were against the competition’s ladder leaders. A wonderful effort. It was great to see that every member of the club who expressed an interest in participating in the competition was given the opportunity to do so, irrespective of their ability. Congratulations to the team managers Rolley and Maureen.

One lucky reader of the Cooroy Rag can win a free game of bowls for four people (bowls supplied) including free tips from members of the bowls club, plus a schooner of beer or soft drink each. Simply text to 0428 549 003 the year the three gentlemen mentioned in the article above got together over a cup of tea and the Cooroy Bowls Club was born. The winner will be drawn from all the correct entries received by 26 April. The prize has been generously donated by Your Mates BowlsPub and members of the Cooroy Bowls Club.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Cooroy Bowls Club, please email the secretary at breece@bigpond.net.au.

Agency finalist in national awards

George Real Estate agents celebrate school leaders

A COOROY real estate agency has been nominated as a finalist in two categories of the nationally recognised Real Estate Business Awards.

Countryside Noosa Realty has been nominated for the Small Boutique Independent Agency of the Year, and agents Kimberlea and Eliot Krause have been nominated for the Sales Campaign of the Year.

Countryside Noosa Realty principal Robyn Kildey said she is so proud of her team for being finalists in these nationally recognised

awards.

“To be a boutique agency and be receiving this recognition is a testament to the honest and ethical business we have strived to provide our clients for the past 20 years,” Robyn said.

Senior sales consultant Kimberlea Krause said she and Eliot are beyond thrilled to be nominated as a finalist.

“This is a national recognition and it means the world to us to know the hard work and determination we put into the customised approach of our sales cam-

paigns have been selected among some of Australia’s finest.

“We are also so proud of our entire team for being nominated as a finalist in the Small Boutique Independent Agency of the Year category. We feel so privileged to be working among such wonderful people. We can’t thank them all enough; we would not be where we are without all of them,” Kimberlea said.

The entire Countryside Noosa Realty team will be heading to Sydney in May for the awards ceremony.

POMONA real estate agency, George Real Estate was surprised by Pomona State School recently when they were asked to present the Year 6 Leadership Awards.

Agent Brian George said it was an honour to present the awards.

“As usual it was another fantastic way to recognise some of the superstars coming through one of our beautiful local state schools.

“Congratulations boys and girls, excellent work.”

Pomona State School said as student leaders, they will have the opportunity to

make a positive impact on the school community by setting an example for their peers, representing their class in school meetings, organising and leading school events, and contributing to the well-being of their school community.

“We are confident that you will take your responsibilities seriously and carry out your duties with integrity, enthusiasm, and respect for others. Your willingness to take on this leadership role shows that you are capable of making a positive difference in the lives of those around

you.

“Thank you to Brian and Carlene George from George Real Estate who presented our school leaders with their badges. We appreciate your contribution and continued support of our school.

“We look forward to seeing all the great things our school leaders will achieve in their new role as school captains and sports captains, and we wish you all the best in your endeavours. Congratulations once again on this well-deserved achievement.”

The three generous-sized bedrooms, with ceiling fans, are accessed through French doors. There is a modern ensuite, and the large walk-in robe offers great storage. The main bathroom is more traditional in style and features a

clawfoot bath and classic finishes.

Relax on the verandah on three sides and soak up the peaceful and quiet ambience overlooking nothing but acreage properties with livestock and views for miles. Stairs from the verandah lead under the house to where car parking space is available. Storage is plentiful and the laundry is easily accessible. Water to the home is provided from approximately 5,000 gallons of rainwater. A 5 kW solar system offsets your power usage and a large electric hot water system ensures long hot showers.

An impressive inground saltwater pool creates a stunning feature in front of the Queenslander, shaded by large trees and bordered by a well-manicured lawn. There is an established mango orchard, picturesque poincianas, jacarandas and a 400-year-old majestic fig tree.

There is a designated chook run, a 9 x 7 m shed which has power, and approximately 5,000 gallons of rainwater.

All this set on 1.84 acres only minutes from Cooroy with uninterrupted views to Cooroy Mountain.

WHEN stepping foot on this peaceful 87-acre property, it’s hard to determine what you sense the most: the gentle cooling breezes, the harmonic chorus of native birdsong, or the realisation of the immense opportunity in front of you.

Nestled privately at the end of your meandering tree-lined driveway is the solid four-bedroom family

home. Built in 1990, it offers the warmth and character of a brick exterior and a hardy Colorbond roof.

The same brickwork features on one internal wall and the wood-burning fireplace located at the heart of the open-plan living areas. The living space is complemented by air-conditioning and fans, ensuring ideal temperature comfort all year around.

The kitchen is a generous size with ample cupboard space and a large pantry. The large windows give natural light and views overlooking your vast property.

There are four bedrooms containing solid and functional built-in wardrobes and ceiling fans. The main bedroom contains an

air-conditioner and a glass sliding door which leads out to the verandah. The home is serviced by an electric hot water system and Biolytix septic system. Three-phase power is also available on the property. There are roughly seven acres of cleared, gently sloping land surrounding the home. There is a 6 x 9 m shed which has power and water connected. The property is connected to the town supply and there is also a large dam and underwater springs. A seasonal creek that fills from Jampot Creek wanders through the property. The location is within walking distance of the township of Cooran and the local school is literally over the fence; it is perfect for your young family.
