Hot, dry summer ahead

McDermott Aviation waterbombing a bushfire. Photo: McDermott Aviation.

Residents advised get ready, be prepared for bushfires BY ALEX PURCELL WITH a hot, dry summer ahead, residents are being advised to get ready and be prepared for bushfires. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) area director for rural fire, Inspector Andrew Allan, told the Cooroy Rag we're in for a hotter and drier summer than normal. "With El Nino, we're looking at a hot, dry summer, and coming out of two to three years of wet, the fuel has had an opportunity to grow. "Because of this, we've more chance of fast-running grass fires

out the back of the hinterland. "The other downside with El Nino is, with potential storms and cyclones, the amount doesn't increase but the intensity does. "And lightning strikes often happen on top of hills making fires inaccessible." Inspector Allan said we're going to get bushfires this season but not like those in 2019. "Those bushfires were unprecedented. Next year is going to be the year for intense bushfires. With El Nino extending into next year, fuels are going to be very dry." And there have been a number of bushfires on the Coast this season already.

"The Beerwah fire in September was a large one. QFES were on that one for a week with 65 fire trucks and air operations," Inspector Allan said. Cooroy company McDermott Aviation assisted in the aerial firefighting of the Beerwah fire. McDermott Aviation business manager Samantha McDermott said so far they have flown over 400 hours in Queensland and 90 hours in NSW water bombing fires. "We have two pilots who started their contracts in Queensland and already they've flown over 300 hours on the contract machines alone, fighting fires from Bundaberg to Toowoomba."

For over 20 years, McDermott Aviation has been helping fight fires all over the world and hold contracts right across Australia with NAFC (National Aerial Firefighting Centre). "We have two contracts in Queensland, nine in WA, three in Victoria, two in NSW and four in Tasmania. "On these 84-day government contracts, we move a helicopter and a pilot to a standby base and have to respond to a fire within 15 minutes. "We also have contracts overseas, and in Greece this season (Australian winter) we've flown around 1,250 hours with eight

aircraft." Inspector Allan said while next year is going to be the year for intense bushfires, that doesn't mean we can get complacent. "Unfortunately, the fire that hurts the most is the one we weren't expecting. Be vigilant. If you see smoke, ring 000 (triple zero). "Clean up properties in semi-rural areas, remove flammables in the yard, trim trees overhanging buildings and cut any long grass around the house. Make a defendable area. "And have a bushfire plan as well, in the event there is a large fire in the area. You can download one from the QFES website."

From the desk of your roaming editor GROWING up on acreage in Cooroy, I don’t remember ever having a run-in with a snake. Even when I spent hours playing in our paddock as a kid, or as a teenager riding around on my horse. Alex Purcell, Cooroy And my parents’ house is Rag Roaming Editor quite snakey. In fact, a video of two snakes dangling off their roof and falling three storeys to the ground went viral on morning TV a few years ago. So, I had my first run-in with a snake last week – two in fact – both in the same spot. When we’re travelling to NSW, we like to stay on the Bingara common, on the Gwydir River. It is a popular spot for RVs and along the riverfront is always the busiest. So we like to go up the back, away from everyone so the kids and dogs can run around, but that was until a brown snake decided it wanted to move in with us. With my husband at work, I locked the kids and dogs inside the van and sat watching where I thought the snake was. Thinking it was still there, hours later my daughter went to get something and saw the snake curled up behind our van. Needless to say, we stayed inside the van until my husband got home and then we moved camp. Thinking there was safety in numbers, we moved down to the river along with everyone else. But that was false security. A day later a red belly black slithered out of the river and up underneath our caravan. Short of packing up and moving the van again, we put everyone inside and decided to wait it out, thinking it would move on overnight. Here’s hoping it did.

Local’s tribute to the old Cooroy police station

Rob Jeffs with the Ford Zephyr ute, the old Cooroy police station and officer-in-charge residence and a proposed design of the new police facility.

AFTER the old police station and officer-in-charge residence on the corner of Garnet and Maple Streets was removed last month to make way for the new $4 million facility, one long-time local has paid tribute to the old building and a former sergeant. Rob Jeffs said this one incident, with the then officer in charge, Sergeant Charles Hartvigsen, taught him as a young 'fella' how to behave. Rob said in 1958 his dad, Archie Jeffs, purchased a brand new bright green Ford Zephyr ute with red upholstery. “I was 17 years old and had gained my driver’s

licence earlier that year so on my birthday, on 31 January 1958, I was allowed to drive it. “Being an apprentice motor mechanic and very much interested in all things mechanical and especially cars, I could not help myself but install an 'oogler' horn and boy oh boy, did that thing 'sing!'. To say it was loud is probably understating things – it was very loud.” Rob said back then, every Friday night was dance night in the Cooroy and surrounding districts, and on this night it was Yandina’s dance night. “At this time cars were not plentiful so it was custom-

ary to give a lift to as many young people as you could, to make sure all your friends could attend the dances. “So here I was driving the Zephyr Ute with three young 'sheilas' in the front seat with me. As I drove down the main street of Cooroy, I thought it only proper to blow the horn a few times. “It was as we drove past the top pub, the Victory Hotel, that I noticed my friend 'Pud' Allery's ute was parked outside the pub. So I parked the Zephyr on the wrong side of the street and I dashed into the pub to let Pud know where we were heading. “Now I had no sooner

got those words out of my mouth, I heard someone in the pub exclaim, ‘Oh no, Old Charlie's coming across the street.’ “So I wasted no time and bolted out of the pub and unfortunately, right to the spot where 'Old Charlie' was waiting. “He said, ‘Just a minute there, sonny, you come with me,’ and with that Old Charlie escorted me across the intersection and into the police station. “He said, ‘I have been watching you and your stupid reckless driving and that bloody loud horn. So I am going to make an example of you to the other 'hoons'

who think they can drive as they like.’” Rob said he was charged with driving over the speed limit and reckless parking on the wrong side of the street; too many passengers in the front seat of a ute; going into a hotel under age (had to be over 21 then); and blowing an excessively loud horn continuously. “Old Charlie said, ‘I want you back in here at 10 am sharp on Monday morning.’ “Come Monday morning, my boss at Page Motors, Frank Johns, said we need a vehicle registration done and to take it over to the police station. Of all things, I could not believe my bad luck.

“On arrival, who should be at the desk, but 'Old Charlie'. He took his time fixing up the paperwork all the while still whistling ‘When the Saints Come Marching In’. “Then he said, ‘Did you tell your father what happened last Friday night?’ “I meekly replied, ‘No Sergeant, I didn’t.’” Rob said with that, Old Charlie smacked the top of the counter with the flat of his hand and roared with laughter. “He said, ‘I knew it! I knew you would not be game to tell your father because he would be on my side. I also bet my wife two bob you would not tell your father and I won!’ “Then he said, ‘This time I am letting you off with a warning but I won't have to tell you again, will I?’ “And I said, ‘No Sergeant and thank you very much.’ “So here's to all the memories and here's a thanks from me to 'Old Charlie',” Rob said. Council addresses draft plan concerns A SUBMISSION to the Queensland Government detailing Noosa Council’s concerns with the draft South East Queensland Regional Plan and its implications for the Noosa Shire has been finalised. The 18-page submission, unanimously endorsed by council, addressed concerns such as: the plan doesn’t provide for any state-funded infrastructure needed to cater for the extra 19,100 people the plan requires Noosa to accommodate by

2046; it puts at risk Noosa’s iconic values – previously protected by state legislation – such as low-rise development and lack of traffic lights; and building heights of more than four storeys have not been part of council’s planning vision for the shire, nor is there community support for the increased heights. Mayor Clare Stewart said expecting Noosa to accommodate another 19,100 people by 2046 was unrealistic, especially without sub-

RUMOURS the decommissioned Tewantin TAFE site had been sold have been quashed by Sandy Bolton’s office. The office of the Independent Member for Noosa said

the site continues to be of great interest to their office and to many in the community. “With some misinformation emanating, we want to clarify there has been no

stantial state infrastructure funding commitments. “We understand that by 2026 the state expects us to accommodate another 11,200 people. That’s an annual growth rate of over 3.9 per cent which hasn’t been experienced in Noosa since the 1990s and it just isn’t sustainable. “The state has not committed to any new infrastructure to support the projected population increases for Noosa,” Cr Stewart said.

change in the status of the site, as previously reported in our Decommissioned Tafe Site update in July 2022. “When the expression of interest process for its future use was finalised in 2022, the announcement regarding the successful proponent was delayed due to Federal Court native title processes which is not specific to this site, rather the broader claim. “This was hoped to have been completed last month; however with the claim being amended to three separate claims, we now have another wait, potentially until next year, and once this has been completed, information will be broadcast.” Ms Bolton’s office said native titles claims and determinations are made under federal government legislation, and as a state MP, Ms Bolton has no control over them or their timeframes. “However, we have previous Noosa 360 updates to keep residents informed at http://www.sandybolton. com/?s=Native+Title. “For any queries relating specifically to native title processes, please contact our local federal MPs.” Constructed in 2004 by the Queensland Government, the Tewantin TAFE campus was vacated in 2014.

Health costs of Black Mountain landslide

Phil Broad at his Black Mountain home.

A BLACK Mountain resident who relies on carers said the landslide has made it hard to get help. Phil Broad has quadriplegia and relies on carers coming to his Black Mountain home twice a day. “I’m an amputee in a wheelchair. If they don’t come, I can’t get up. “During the initial flooding, when the landslip happened, no one could get to me for about four days. “Since the slip, I have had to go to Sunshine Coast University Hospital a couple of times a month and QAS [Queensland Ambulance Service] handled that, but I’ve had three carers have to resign because of the

maintenance and cost of their cars. “That is the biggest issue – getting student nurses to come to my home to help me.” Mr Broad said in the past two years, since the landslide, the roads have improved. “I’m happy with the council. They’re doing the best they can and I don’t think there is anything else they can do.” While he is concerned residents west of the landslide will only have one exit heading into two fire seasons, Mr Broad said he respects the time involved in fixing the landslip. “It is a big project; they

have to get it right. “I do feel sorry for the small businesses along the route and families trying to get their kids to school but it is no one's fault – it is nature and they’re all doing the best they can.” Noosa Council said work on the landslide commenced last week with initial activities including setting up site offices and storage areas, making room for large equipment to access the site, and installing fencing to keep the construction area safe. "Construction will generally be undertaken between Monday and Saturday, 6 am to 6 pm. The community will be advised of construction activities outside these hours. The contractor will also have a dedicated phone line during construction so directly impacted residents can raise any concerns about construction activities. "The detour via Andersons Road will remain in place during construction, and Council has just undertaken maintenance on the detour to make sure it is safe for motorists. "This is a complex reconstruction project in a constrained area and access to the construction site must be limited to authorised personnel only, for the safety of workers and the community. Fencing will be installed this week to restrict all access through this area. "All material, equipment, and personnel will mostly use the road on the eastern side of the landslip. The community will be advised if access is needed via the detour. Ongoing maintenance of the detour will continue. "Council appreciates the ongoing patience and support from the community as the reconstruction program continues."

WITH the application for a proposed supermarket in Eumundi scheduled for council discussion, the developer has slammed a new application that has been lodged for a proposed second supermarket site. Altum Property Group’s proposed development application for a supermarket at the southern end of Eumundi is scheduled for discussion at a full Sunshine Coast Council meeting on 26 October. But Altum Property Group director Alex Rigby said now an impact assessable application has been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council proposing a supermarket on the old Eumundi Butter Factory site. “I find it incredible that a decision on our application has been delayed by Sunshine Coast Council planners for over one year and now when we are in the final stages of achieving an approval for a supermarket application, this new application has been lodged.

“The application is a time-waster and I question the financial viability from a construction cost perspective when you consider the public works, retaining works and civil fill required.” A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said the council issued a Development Permit for Material Change of Use of Premises (Shopping Centre) and Preliminary Approval for Material Change of Use to override the Planning Scheme under Section 242 of the Sustainable Planning Act 2009 for a Mixed Use Development on 13 March 2020. “This approval was over land at 106, 108, 110 & 124 Memorial Drive, 1 & 3 Cook Street, 18 Elizabeth Street and 9 Caplick Way, Eumundi (Council Reference MCU16/0284). “The development permit component involves the establishment of a small-scale, boutique shopping centre which includes shops such as a grocer or delicatessen, cafes/restaurants, profes-

sional services and health services. “A total gross floor area of 1,033 m2 (gross leasable floor area of 785 m2) is proposed across three separate buildings which are linked via ground level walkways and a public piazza space. “This approval has not been enacted by the developer but remains in effect until March 2026 unless further extended.” Mr Rigby said he believes if the latest application for the Butter Factory site application were to be approved, it would bring further congestion to the town centre, especially on market days and other activities within the township. “We have a dedicated 9,915 m2 site at 10 Memorial Drive, Eumundi, which is located at the southern entrance to town and well away from the high traffic zone of the town centre. “Our site already includes an approved service station and it is construction-ready with all major access work already completed.”

OUR NEW RACKS ARE NOW STOCKED WITH TREATED PINE TIMBER HALLOWEEN is just around the corner and Pomona’s haunted house is returning with a new thrilling themed maze. Every year, Lanze Magin and his partner Jasmine Sternberg transform the front yard of their Pavilion Street property into a spooky maze to scare brave trick-or-treaters. Lanze said this year the theme is the Haunted Pirate Ship Maze. “I can’t give away too much but everything is centred around that theme.” Lanze said the maze has several tricks and scares to get hearts pumping. “I start building it a week out from Halloween and Jasmine then paints and fills with props. “We have lots of volunteers who are scarers in the maze or on props or lolly stations.” What started as a Halloween-themed party for two of their children a few years ago has grown into a destination for trick-or-treaters and their parents. “The first year we had about 40 kids come through. Now we have close to 300 or 400. “Past themes have been a circus, evil clowns and Hotel Transylvania. “Many on the street are starting to get involved too and welcoming trick-ortreaters. It's good for the kids and for the neighbourhood. “It’s free, something fun to

do and it’s fun to scare the kids.” Queensland Police said while everyone loves a good scare they are reminding community members to “creep” it real and ensure the safety of children is a top priority. “Trick-or-treaters should be accompanied by a trusted, responsible adult monster at all times; always walk, not run, between houses and stick to the footpath rather than the road; wear bright colours to enhance your visibility to passing motorists; never enter a stranger’s house, even if they have invited you in after knocking on their door. Consider joining your household on a neighbourhood adventure – there is safety in numbers for little witches and vampires trick or treating later into the night – then

go home and dig into your cavity starter pack.” Queensland Police also has downloadable posters for homeowners. “If you are happy to receive trick-or-treaters at your haunted house, you can download, print and display the green welcome poster in a prominent position outside your home. “We know that not everyone wants to have spooky knocks on their doors, so there is also a poster to ward off the creatures of the night.” Lance and Jasmine's Haunted Pirate Ship Maze at 62 Pavilion Street Pomona will be open from 5:30 to 7 pm on Tuesday 31 October. “The rule is though, if you don’t go through the maze, you don't get lollies at the end,” Lanze said.

Whether at the beach, playing golf, running, playing with your grandchildren outside, or just walking to your car, the wind doesn’t sound great with traditional hearing technology. And did you know that hands, hair, glasses or a facemask touching the hearing aids, creates the same sound as wind brushing over them? Fortunately with Oticon Real™, you are protected from all those potentially unpleasant sounds. That way, you can stay sharp in the real world.

Traditional hearing aids allow these sounds to enter at full force. This stresses the noise reduction system, forcing it to inefficiently reduce a broader range of frequencies than necessary. This leads to a reduction of both the interfering sounds and the important ones, resulting in unclear speech. Featuring double-patented technology, the Wind and Handling Stabiliser in Oticon Real™ detects and cleans up noise from both the wind and the hearing aid being touched. It selects the microphone with the cleanest sound input, preventing disruptive sound from entering the

system. It then reduces the remaining noise from the other microphone efficiently and only in the frequencies affected by the noise. This provides a cleaner sound, helping you receive better access to speech in windy environments. We invite you to a free trial^ of Oticon Real™ hearing devices. It’s risk-free and without obligation. Call 5443 6633 to take advantage of this offer.

THE grave of a Cooroy man’s step-grandfather has been discovered 83 years after it was thought he died at sea. Paul Norton’s step-grandfather Francesco D’Inverno was believed to have been lost at sea, but three weeks ago the family was advised of his grave in Scotland. Paul said it was a bizarre turn of events that led to the discovery. “For decades, these people have been tending to Frank’s grave. “Recently they did a search and discovered he was the second husband of my grandmother, Ginevra Tasselli, after tracking the marriage certificate. “My grandmother’s married name to her first husband was Tasselli. “So they went on Face-

book and did a search for Tasselli family members and my second cousin Charlotte, who is married but kept her maiden name and her married name on Facebook, came up and that’s how they found us. “These lovely people have never given up and finally a mystery is solved.” Paul said Frank was on a boat when it was torpedoed during the Second World War. “Many Italians were rounded up for no apparent reason even when they had resided in England for many years. “Frank was an Italian and he ended up as one of the prisoners on the boat, the Arandora Star (also known as The Star of Shame), which departed Liverpool for Canada and was torpedoed

off Ireland. “We all assumed he was lost at sea but his body washed up in Scotland and when they found his body he had paperwork on him so that’s how they knew his name. “And that’s where he’s been buried for the past 83 years and we had no idea.” Paul said the hunt is now on for any other relatives Frank might have had in Italy, while organising a proper headstone and memorial. “The family are contributing to this and there will be a service and/or ceremony next year. “They’re also trying to see if there are any of Frank’s relatives in Italy they can contact, and we think he has family in America as well.”

Cooroy pharmacist-owner wins state award

Jacqueline with her award.

First birthday for family dental

Aroosha, Rod and the team at Tewantin Family Dental.

LIVELIFE Pharmacy Cooroy pharmacist-owner has won a prestigious state award. Jacqueline Meyer has been named the 2023 Queensland Pharmacist of the Year at the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) Queensland Excellence Awards. Jacqueline said she feels very honoured and humbled to receive such an award. “I genuinely appreciate and care for the community each and every day. As a female pharmacist, a busy wife and mum and a business owner, sometimes life can be overwhelming but when moments like this happen it allows me to stop and appreciate the phar-

macy service that I strive to provide the community. I feel that collaboration is the key, not only with other health providers in the region but also the community, as pharmacy is often the first access point for people and their healthcare needs. “I am very proud of the whole pharmacy team that works beside me as we look after the health and well-being of our local community.” Jacqueline said she is passionate about medication safety, upholding quality standards, professionalism in the industry and growing the role of pharmacists in the safe, appropriate use of medicines from dosage to education and reviewing

medications. “I sit on two local medication advisory committees for a palliative care hospice and Eden Private Hospital, working collaboratively with prescribers and nurses in both environments and providing nurse education, antibiotic stewardship and patient education.” Jacqueline has also trained as a lactation consultant to fill the gap in local services and enhance the support available to mothers in the region. As the founder and host of the free Hinterland Health Expo in Cooroy, Jacqueline has developed relationships with key health services in the local region, uniting health

providers, building positive relationships and facilitating collaborations between practitioners at the annual event. As a female business owner and mother, Jacqueline said she is particularly dedicated to inspiring young pharmacists to establish their careers within the profession and has trained and mentored more than 10 PSA interns. Jacqueline received the 2023 Queensland Pharmacist of the Year from the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) at their Queensland Excellence Awards in Brisbane on Saturday 23 September. LiveLife Pharmacy is at 26 Maple Street, Cooroy.

TEWANTIN Family Dental has celebrated its first birthday. Former Cooroy dentist Dr Arosha Weerakoon and prosthetist Rob Arthur bought Dr Frances Wing’s dental surgery in the Cooloola Centre one year ago. Arosha said she and Rob are grateful to all of Fran’s previous patients who trusted them to continue her good work. “We are also grateful to our patients from Cooroy and Noosa who followed

us. It’s given us a thrill to catch up with familiar faces and get to know our new patients. “We also welcome anyone new who is looking to change. We care about our patients, we stay in touch, and love that we can provide dental and denture care under one roof. “It’s wonderful to have found a new home and we look forward to serving the community for many more years.” Arosha said they would

also like to thank their wonderful staff who have helped create a welcoming, friendly, and caring environment. The anniversary also coincides with some special news. “I was inducted as an honorary fellow into the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the International College of Dentists at the recent World Dental Congress hosted in Sydney at the end of September. “I was accepted into both

organisations as a fellow because of my service to higher education in dentistry, presentations at local and international conferences, my role in the International Dental Ethics & Law Society, and publications with The Conversation Media Group,” Arosha said. A lecturer with a PhD from the University of Queensland, Arosha has also won many awards. Contact Arosha and the team at Tewantin Family Dental on (07) 5449 7167.

For the fight against fires

The Transalls C160 plane and the internal water tank.

TWO Cooroy businesses have worked together to create a brand-new fire-fighting machine. McDermott Aviation bought an ex-army plane and Helitak Fire Fighting Equipment manufactured a water tank for it. McDermott Aviation business manager Sam McDermott said the plane is the first of three that they have purchased from Germany. “We purchased three Transalls C160s from the German government but this is the first one to do

the trip to Australia. “It is now based at the Sunshine Coast Airport and we are waiting for final certification from CASA, the civil aviation authority. “With the help of Helitak, we developed a high-capacity water-bombing tank that can be attached to the plane.” Helitak CEO and chief engineer Jason Schellars said the internal tank which can hold 14,000 litres – putting it in the category of a large tank – can be installed on the plane in as little as 30 minutes.

“We designed the tank with as little airframe modification as possible and modified the bottom of the aircraft to suit, so within half an hour it is installed and it is ready to go. “It can go from a water tanker to a cargo plane in an hour.” Jason said the tank was designed on the Sunshine Coast with Cooroy staff. Sam said once the plane is certified, they hope to get a contract for it in Australia or even Germany. Visit mcdermottaviation. com and helitak.com.au.

Cooroy travel agents share their love of Africa A COOROY couple with a passion for Africa are thrilled to be able to share their favourite destination with others. Travel guides Peter and Jacky Emery said they love escorting small groups on African safaris. “We take a maximum of eight guests. Mostly they are like-minded folk with a love of wildlife and the great outdoors. Many make lifelong friends on these trips through shared experiences and shared interests. “In Botswana, friendships are often forged around the campfire after a day’s

viewing, a glass of wine in hand, and with the anticipation of a delicious dinner being prepared in the camp kitchen. “And we often catch up with previous guests for coffee and a chat.” Peter said it is such a privilege for them to be able to share with others the places that they love. “Such as Botswana’s Okavango Delta and Kenya’s Masai Mara, both very special but at the same time very different. We love seeing our guests’ reactions upon seeing their first wild elephant up close

and personal or their first close encounter with a big male lion, all from the safety of the safari vehicle under the care of a professional guide.” Peter said their three safaris next year – two in Botswana and one in Kenya – offer the chance to see endangered species. “Botswana, for example, is a hotspot for African wild dogs, also known as painted dogs because of their blotchy tan, black and white colouring, and formerly known as Cape hunting dogs. “Elephant encounters are

virtually guaranteed and it is very common to see lions, leopards and Cape buffaloes. The only one of the so-called ‘Big Five’ that we are very unlikely to see is the rhino. Sadly, these had been poached out. However, in recent years, rhinos have been reintroduced on remote islands deep in the delta where they can be protected.” But Peter said guests wanting to see a rhino will have a better chance on their luxury bush-camp Kenya safari. “There we have an excellent chance of seeing the

other four members of the ‘Big Five’ - lions, elephants, leopards and cape buffaloes.. “In Kenya, we are also likely to see cheetahs. We can see them in Botswana too but our chances are greater in Kenya. “In Kenya, we also hope to see some of the less well-known species such as gerenuks and lesser kudus. Gerenuks are extraordinary creatures, almost looking like a cross between an impala and a giraffe. They stand on their hind legs, stretching their long necks up into the thorn bushes to

pluck the juiciest leaves. The lesser kudu is a small, shy version of the greater kudu that we will almost certainly see in Botswana. They have beautiful long spiral horns.” Peter said whichever safari their guests choose, they are guaranteed a life-changing experience. “I bet that even before they return home, they will be planning their next safari.” For details on Peter and Jacky’s escorted safaris visit ucangoonsafari.com.au or call 0449 689 447 or 0439 074 700.

Cooroy charity CEO recognised with award COOROY charity PTSD Dogs Australia’s CEO has been awarded a Prime Minister’s award. CEO and co-founder of PTSD Dogs Australia, Angie Weeks, was honoured with the 2023 Prime Minister’s National Veterans’ Employment Award in the category of Partner Entrepreneur of the Year. The awards are a platform to highlight the remarkable skills and abilities in the veteran community, both as employees and entrepre-

neurs, and acknowledge organisations that actively recruit, employ and support veterans and their families in the civilian workforce. Angie said it is such an honour to be recognised for the work they do. “It is so rewarding to see the transformative effects that the dogs have for their handlers – reducing anxiety and depression and improving the overall quality of life of veterans – and the positive impact that the dogs have had on their

families, helping them to reconnect and improve their relationships.” PTSD Dogs Australia is a non-profit organisation that rescues, trains and provides at no cost, service dogs for veterans and first responders suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In the five years since the organisation was established by Angie, her husband Roger, accountant Julie Morrisson and Barrister Pattifield, Angie has trained

A COOROY volunteer has been recognised as a community hero. Uniform 4 Kids (U4K) member Jeanette Reichmann has been awarded the Bendigo Community Bank Sunshine Coast Community Hero Award for the Cooroy area. Jeanette said the award came as a complete surprise. “I had no idea I had even been nominated until the night.” The Bendigo Community Bank Sunshine Coast Community Hero Awards honour individuals who have displayed “outstanding service to their community, as selected by a volunteer committee”. Bendigo Bank Cooroy branch manager Steve Clarke said these heroes are people who have dedicated time and creativity towards uplifting and enriching the lives of others, earning them well-deserved recognition as true champions for good. “A community hero can be anyone who spends

their time contributing to the local area through an act of service. They are usually the people who don’t expect to be thanked for the work they do but who we couldn’t imagine the community without.” The chosen heroes were revealed during the Bendigo Community Bank Sunshine Coast Spring Fair celebrations on Saturday, 2 September. Jeanette said she got involved with U4K after moving to Palm Lake Resort. “I had nursed for 46 years at the same hospital in Victoria. We moved up here because our children and grandchildren live here. “When we arrived at Palm Lake, we were taken around and I saw all the U4K ladies sewing. I met Yvonne and she was very welcoming so I said to my husband I might go up and look at helping. “And I love it. I do it two days a week. “It is such a wonderful thing. It is lovely to see the happiness on the kids’ faces when we get that feedback,

and the group has a good camaraderie – they’re a nice group of people.” Uniforms 4 Kids began in Cooroy with a handful of home sewers. Today, more than 35 volunteers have sewn over 28,000 items of clothing for kids in need. “We’re the biggest group in the area. We get all the uniforms from police, flying doctors, border force and Australia Zoo, and make clothes for children. And they’re beautiful. “There are a lot of kids out there that need a lot of help.” Jeanette was awarded $5,000 from Bendigo Bank to put towards a charity of her choice. “I have put it towards U4K. “Bendigo Bank need a big thank you; they do a lot for the area,” Jeanette said. Steve said $1.7 million has been given back to the local community this financial year. “With up to 80 per cent of profits returned to the community, local banking certainly makes a big impact.”

Tall Trees ‘triumphant’ return

People’s Choice winner Jane Welsh and runner-up Jandamarra Cadd in front of each other’s work.

AFTER a year in limbo, Cooran’s Tall Trees Art Exhibition returned with a bang. The annual art extravaganza held in venues all along King Street on 16 and 17 September was a huge success. Tall Trees Art Inc. committee member and communications officer Wendy Birrell said from the opening on Saturday night to the close on Sunday afternoon, Cooran was buzzing with a fabulous creative, colourful and welcoming vibe.

“A total of 12 venues showcased a great variety of artworks from Sunshine Coast and Noosa hinterland artists, starting at the Lazy Fox cafe at the southern end of King Street to the common space just past the brewery. “The transformation of the historic Cooran Hall into a well-curated gallery was something to behold.” Wendy said excited and enthusiastic children – and some adults too – followed the ‘Molly’s Dollys’ trail of

Students shine in Spring Spectacular GOOD Shepherd Lutheran College has celebrated spring with more than 400 family and friends at their annual Spring Spectacular concert. Over 250 students, from Prep to Year 12, took to the stage in two concerts performing over 40 songs from classical to jazz, musical theatre and modern. The evening featured performances by the senior jazz band, the senior musical theatre and dance troupe, the junior choir, the Aurora choir, the wind ensemble, the Maroon band and the Year 4 band as part of the school’s immersion program. Director of Instrumental Music, Jim Tomkins, said they were fortunate to have

Antoni Bonetti, conductor of the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra, lead the Good Shepherd Lutheran College orchestra in a number of pieces including The Marriage of Figaro. “This concert is the

highlight of our musical calendar and features the culmination of many hours of practice and commitment by all the students, staff and parents so it is a wonderful event for our school.”

PSS cookbook is ready for pre-orders

Plates of Pomona cookbook.

POMONA State School’s Plates of Pomona cookbook is now available for pre-orders. The cookbook features over 100 recipes from the community, and money

raised from advertising and sales will go towards a new playground for the school. P&C secretary Jess McNamara said the school has a few hardcopies in the office for people to view.

“Orders will be available for pickup in week nine, ready to be placed under the Christmas tree. “Also available for purchase are our farm garden tea towels illustrated by our students. “These are a perfect accompaniment to our Plates of Pomona cookbook. “Our budding prep, grade 1 and 2 students are responsible for illustrating our fruit and vegetable garden tea towel; our grade 3 and 4 students combined their artistic talents to create our insect and flower garden tea towel; and our grade 5 and 6 students put their seriously fabulous drawing skills into practice to produce our food and farm animals tea towel. “We are pretty impressed with our students’ drawing talent! “Purchase individually or in a bundle,” Jess said.

NDSHS students go skiing

NDSHS students on the ski trip to Perisher.

A GROUP of Noosa District State High School students have enjoyed a school trip to the snow. Teachers Martin Stieger and Alarna Priestley accompanied 23 students on a five-day ski trip to Perisher last month. Ms Priestley said with the hottest winter in Australian

history, they had certainly never seen conditions like it before, but there was snow to be skied. “The first two days had such strong winds we were only able to use T-bars to access the terrain. Day three saw the chairlifts open for most of the day, and day four was back to T-bars

only. “Our students were incredible and still made the most of their time and snow available, with the majority of students skiing or boarding until 4 pm each day. We were so proud of the students’ enthusiasm and making the most of their conditions. “Our nights were filled with either saunas, pool games, video games, jigsaws, VR, watching football games or just relaxing in the rooms or around the fireplace. “Once again, Peer Gynt Lodge provided an incredible and personalised experience. Thank you to Shane and Karen. “Thank you for making us proud, Noosa District Ski Trippers 2023.”

Brian Stockwell Councillor for Noosa Shire WHETHER you’ve lived here all your life or moved here recently, it’s likely that the town’s character is a big part of why you like to call the Cooroy area home. When you compare it to previously similar places, like Nerang which has been swamped by the amorphous characterless conurbation of the Gold Coast, we’ve managed to keep the essence of what is important about the town. But is that about to change? The town is now coming under sustained pressure from outside influences. Maintaining Cooroy’s character has not come easily. It is only through the community and councillors standing up for the principles of the Noosa Plan and the controls it uses to avoid ‘big city’ type urban growth. For example, council is currently in a court battle to protect the southern entrance to the town from a retirement resort on land zoned for rural and recreational purposes. Ironically, this site was subject to a similarly refused develop-

ment application in 1990 that led to the adoption of the first character protections gazetted in the Cooroy Development Control Plan (in 1992). That plan aimed to “reinforce those elements of town design, architecture and streetscape which contribute to the country town character of Cooroy and ensure that all new development enhances the character of the township.” This objective has been reflected in the subsequent 2006 and current 2020 Planning Schemes. Recently one of the big two supermarket chains has been engaging residents. They have yet to meet with council staff, let alone submit a development application. Reportedly, their plan is to build a supermarket on land zoned for community uses (residential care facility) and for environmental management and conservation. A supermarket complex would not only be completely inconsistent with the planning scheme but, in my opinion, also represent a

significant threat to the vitality of the business centre of Cooroy. There are numerous examples across Australia where traditional shopping areas have declined dramatically when supermarket complexes are built on the edge of towns or outside of historic business centres. The Noosa Plan 2020 has sufficient land zoned to cater for Cooroy’s retail needs well into the future. Any supermarket chain is able to acquire appropriately zoned land in the District Centre and with sensitive design could augment existing small businesses rather than draw customers away from them. While retail convenience is something we all prize in this busy world, it should not come at the cost of turning Cooroy into just another bland homogenous replication of suburbs strewn across the South East Queensland megalopolis. Please note the views expressed in this article are my own, not necessarily those of the Noosa Council. Brian

Clare Stewart Noosa Mayor AS Noosa Council continues to wage a war on waste, we have launched a new polystyrene thermal processing machine at the Eumundi-Noosa Road waste facility as well as the new Containers for Change reverse vending machine. The new polystyrene thermal processing machine means we can process polystyrene in-house, sparing an estimated 50 tonnes the size of two Olympic swimming pools of polystyrene from ending up in our landfill each year. This machine will also save us over $380,000 annually in landfill costs and help us reduce emissions and conserve valuable landfill space. For a one-off cost of $300,000, this machine is well and truly cost-efficient and effective. Gympie Council has committed to sending its polystyrene for processing as part of the newly signed Waste Memorandum of Understanding agreement between our two councils, and residents are able to drop off their polystyrene anytime for recycling.

Meanwhile, our new Containers for Change reverse vending machine is getting great feedback. Made by Ecoboxtec the machine uses Artificial Intelligence to accept eligible drink containers and in doing so, provides a monetary rebate. Noosa Council is continually looking for opportunities to turn waste into a resource and these two new machines go a long way in achieving that. Noosa Council has recently made a submission opposing an application by the Kin Kin Quarry operator to clear over eight hectares of the quarry site. Council doesn’t have an assessment role as it is handled under the Federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The area proposed to be cleared is in the existing quarry footprint but we have serious concerns regarding impacts to threatened flora and fauna species, including koalas, greater gliders and scrub turpentine. Residents have also made submis-

sions and we thank them for that as we collectively stand together and await the outcome of our current court action against the operator of the quarry over alleged breaches of the Quarry Management Plan. Finally, remember to have your say as part of our destination management plan consultation. A destination management plan is a blueprint for protecting a community’s key values while guiding the evolution of the tourism industry. It considers the interests of all stakeholders. Feedback from the Discussion Paper on Noosa’s Destination Management will help shape the management of Noosa Shire as a community and as a premier destination. There are so many ways you can get involved: reading the discussion paper and completing a short five-minute survey, sending a submission to council, or even registering to take part in one of the face-toface workshops or coffee chats being held across our shire. For more information, please visit Noosa Council’s website: yoursay.noosa.qld. gov.au. Until next month, take care, Clare

Llew O’Brien Federal Member for Wide Bay EARLIER this year the Kin Kin quarry operator lodged an application under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity and Conservation (EPBC) Act to clear more than eight hectares of remnant vegetation that is identified as core critical koala habitat, as well as habitat for the greater glider and grey-headed flying fox. The EPBC assessment process requires the applicant to make a referral to the minister, Tania Plibersek, via the Federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, whose role is to apply the law to protect Australia’s unique animals, plants, habitats, and places. At the time of writing this column, the application is now subject to a request for further information. The Federal Environment Minister has asked the Kin Kin Quarry operator for additional details before she makes her decision. While I am hopeful the minister will recognise the

terrible impact this land clearing proposal will have on this patch of critical local habitat, I am concerned that this minister has already given the green light to clearing essential koala habitat to make way for a wind farm near Rockhampton. In 2020, the former Coalition government refused to allow the operators of the Lotus Creek wind farm to clear 341 hectares of old-growth forest to install 55 wind turbines on the Nebo-Connors Range. Fast forward to a change of government in 2022, and Minister Plibersek overturned this decision and gave the go-ahead to clear the forest that has been described as “koala central”. I sincerely hope that the minister’s decision to bulldoze koala habitat to make way for an industrial-scale energy project is not an indication that the Labor Government is prepared to pursue ideology ahead of our endangered species. The Kin Kin Quarry was

granted development approval in 1987 and unfortunately, the council has no assessment role in relation to the recent vegetation clearing application, as it is proposed to occur within the existing quarry footprint. As the quarry held development approval prior to the core critical koala habitat being identified in the project area in the South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy 2020-2025, they do not require any further local or state government approvals to clear this vegetation. I have written to Minister Plibersek to convey my objections to this land-clearing proposal and have not yet received a response. The federal government has no role in regulating the quarry’s day-to-day operations or activities; however, the proposed vegetation clearing at the site triggers the need for EPBC Act assessment as the activity is likely to have a significant impact on local threatened species and ecological communities. I encourage everyone who is concerned about this clearing proposal to email Minister Plibersek at minister.plibersek@dcceew.gov. au. Llew

Dear Editor, I note that the council has instigated a program of questions to ‘help shape Pomona’. Now, that’s the third question and may not need to be asked if we ask the first two questions. Question 1: Does anyone in Pomona think it needs reshaping? Question 2: Do the locals need outside help/interference with this reshaping? It is interesting that outsiders are pushing the meeting – it’s not been instigated by the people of Pomona. The people of Pomona are mature adults running their own businesses, properties and communities, quite without the interference of outsiders. See, the people have come to Pomona because they like it. Or, they’re born here and they stay because they like it. The town has a particular vibe, a spirit, that suits them. That

spirit cannot be defined or written up in agendas and remits. It is just what we experience as we engage with the people, businesses, buildings, conversations, trees, birds, animals and climate in this tiny part of the cosmos. Any meddling by outsiders could destroy the uniqueness that brings and keeps people here. Further, the spirit of a community is fluid, evolving as the people do. Forcing a plan on that fluidity will stem the flow and stifle the natural growth of the town and its creativity. To ask another question, how would the council employees feel if a posse of Pomonians arrived at their smart offices and forced a meeting to discuss the changes that are needed in council activities? That is what is happening in Pomona. Before the third question is asked, can we please ask the first question: do

any locals want any improvements? If that’s a NO, no further questions are required. If it’s a YES, then let us ask the second question: can the locals handle it themselves? If that’s a YES, the third question is irrelevant. Philip J Bradbury Pomona Dear Editor In regards to the Cooroy Butter Factory well, this water, of very good quality, was solely used in the manufacture of butter and ice making. Ice was also sold in summer months to Cooroy residents in the early years, before electric refrigerators. I suggest a wooden four-post structure, about two metres high, with a hip rooftop of corrugated iron to represent the old pump house be erected on top of the existing concrete cover. Demons celebrate season Entries open for Noosa Ultra-Trail®

Pomona Demons’ end-of-season celebration.

POMONA Demons have celebrated another fabulous season with a celebration and campout. Pomona Aussie Rules Football Club president Matt Conquest said the club experienced fantastic growth with lots of new members and families joining. “We fielded a very solid U9s team, led by coach Lainee Magin, developing their skills, learning rules and taking on some tackling with modified tackle coming into play this year. “Our U11 cohort was strong with the club fielding two teams, Blue and Gold, coached by Billy Magin and Rohan Freeman. Both teams had great success. Our older U11 Blue team is now two years undefeated. “Our U13 boys went from strength to strength under the watchful eye of coach Tim McNamara. The boys had a successful season,

making it through to the grand final in their division. “And we had our first standalone U15 girls’ team who applied themselves and improved remarkably through the season.” Matt said the club had three players selected for Brisbane Lions AFL Academy. “Congratulations to Xanthe Millington, Jai Clifford and Tennyson Conquest for their achievements and recognition. From here they may be selected and play some high-level football against other skilled teams for a spot in the State side. “We had quite the list of players shining this year out of district and regional footy too.” Looking ahead, Matt said there are some exciting things to come. “Our inaugural Summer 9s competition starts Thursday 19 October. It’s non-contact

and purely for fun. “Seniors footy is also coming back to Pomona and we have our first meeting on 26 October at 6:30 pm at the clubhouse in Pomona. “From a committee level, we have some great development plans on the horizon to extend and renovate the clubhouse and install new lighting. We are looking into funding avenues through grants and local and state government.” Matt said they would like to thank all their sponsors for their support. “It means so much that the community is supporting grassroots football clubs. Please support them like they support our club. “We are always looking for new members and families. If you love AFL and would like to be involved in the club, shoot us an email at pomonademons@ hotmail.com.”

Noosa Ultra-Trail race ambassador Kellie Angel. QUEENSLAND’S largest trail run event is returning to the hinterland for its third year. Noosa Ultra-Trail® will be held 21–24 March 2024 and entries are now open. Event director Nick Stewart said early bird entities opened on 1 September. “We are expecting a field of 1,800 runners in 2024 to traverse the spectacular Noosa Biosphere trails located within the Noosa hinterland. “The Noosa Ultra-Trail is

Queensland’s most popular festival-style trail run event. “The support we have had from Tourism & Events Queensland, Queensland Parks & Wildlife, and Tourism Noosa has been fantastic and we’re thrilled to be able to showcase the Noosa hinterland to people from around Australia and all over the world again.” Nick said Noosa Ultra-Trail participants have the chance to run through the stunning national parks and state forests and along quiet country roads while taking in the charm of towns such as Pomona and Cooran. “The Noosa Ultra-Trail offers runners a choice of six distances, including the Forest 15, Cross Country 25, Pomona Sundowner 30, Out’N’Back 50, Hinterland Traverse 80, and the ultimate challenge – the Ultra-Trail 100. “The diverse range in distances and terrain has seen the event welcome

participants from a range of disciplines, such as road runners, triathletes, hiking and trekking, alongside traditional trail runners.” The event is a UTMB Index event, attracting some of the world’s best trail runners including race ambassador Kellie Angel, a three-time World Trail Running Championship Australian representative. “Joining Kellie as race ambassadors once again are Craig Alexander, five times Ironman triathlon world champion; celebrity chef and local, Matt Golinski; and internationally renowned wellness specialist and local, Kat Harding. “A range of lifestyle activities are also part of the four-day schedule, providing event participants and their family and friends the opportunity to experience the best of what Noosa has to offer.” To learn more or enter the Noosa Ultra-Trail, visit: noosaultratrail.com.au

Badminton medalists CONGRATULATIONS to Cooroy Badminton Club juniors for gaining first, second, third and fourth place at a com-

petition at Nambour Badminton Centre, and to coach Andi Dakó for organising this great event.

Monthly real estate market wrap up

With Sirah Robb, Director and Principal of Hinternoosa Real Estate

ELEANOR Creagh, senior economist at PropTrack, recently highlighted a national resurgence in the property market. September marked the ninth consecutive month of national home price growth, with prices now up 3.75 per cent higher than a year ago, entirely regaining the price falls of 2022 despite an uplift in the number of properties coming to market. Buyer and seller confidence is notably

on the rise, presenting a stark turnaround from the fast declines observed at a national level in 2022. National trends provide useful context for what we are seeing at Hinternoosa in our local market. In September, we saw 402 groups through our open homes and private inspections. The ability to attract this volume of buyer interest, combined with our strategic

approach and super-team seamlessly on a number of dynamic, continues to yield sales this month to achieve the best results in the market premium results for our – like the sale of 84 Botanica clients, including 64 Binalong Cct, Doonan, which sold just Rd, Pinbarren, which sold three days from going live prior to auction.
