Christmas In Cooroy spreads Christmas cheer BY ALEX PURCELL

Merry Christmas!

I

'TIS the season to be jolly and Cooroy came alive with the spirit of Christmas for the annual Christmas In Cooroy celebration. More than 5,000 people attended the time-honoured Cooroy event on Friday 9 December. A free event hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, president Sirah Robb said it was wonderful to see the community come together. “Volunteers started organising the event in May this year, so after hundreds of hours of preparation it was special to see it all come together on the night. “We estimate 5,000 to 6,000 visitors gathered for a night of joy, laughter and community celebration.” Cooroy sparkled with Christmas magic from the moment Santa arrived in a parade led by emergency services, stilt walkers and marching band to when the community gathered for the annual lighting of the town’s Christmas tree. “The Cooroy Chamber's new Santa photo scene looked spectacular and was a hit, with photos being taken from the moment Santa arrived in style in a hot rod, to the end of the event,” Ms Robb said. “We gave away to attendees 300 free show bags with generous inclusions from local businesses. “Late-night trading was popular, with many getting a start on their Christmas shopping. Showcasing our local businesses is a key initiative of the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and has proven to be

popular since the updated format Christmas In Cooroy was adopted in 2020 in response to requirements during the pandemic.

More than 5,000 people attended the time-honoured Cooroy event on Friday 9 December. “There was an incredible lineup of free activities, competitions and entertainment. The Santa race had everyone holding their breath as the winner somersaulted over the finish line. Some serious talent was seen in the bike decorating competition and Jingle Joggers were seen jaunting around Cooroy in their reindeer antlers. “But the lighting of the tree was the most magical of all, with everyone gathering under the snow on lighting.” From 5:30 to 8:30 pm attendees enjoyed live music, entertainment, stalls, activities, markets, and food and drink in Cooroy's Maple and Emerald Streets and Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre. Ms Robb said the success of Christmas In Cooroy would not have been possible without everyone involved. “Thank you to the hard work and dedication of the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Christmas In Cooroy committee, local businesses, our very generous sponsors, and passionate volunteers who poured their hearts into creating a memorable event. “A very big thank you to all.”

From the desk of your editor IT always begins to feel a lot like Christmas when Christmas In Cooroy comes to town. The fun and festivities, Santa, the lighting of the tree – it never fails to Alex Purcell, sprinkle me with the magic Cooroy Rag Editor of Christmas and make me excited about the festive season ahead. And this year was no different. What a wonderful event! Kudos to everyone involved in Christmas In Cooroy 2023 – from the organisers to the shop fronts, the stall holders to the entertainers, and everyone who came – you all contributed to making this Christmas In Cooroy a magical community celebration. We have been spoilt this year with community Christmas events. Pomona’s inaugural Christmas Market and Late Night Trading Street Fair on 1 December was a fabulous evening. It was wonderful to see the main street come alive in the spirit of Christmas. Congratulations to all involved in bringing this event to life and I hope the success of it means this will be the first of many Pomona Christmas fairs. As we slide into the week before Christmas and begin winding down for a well-deserved break, we’d like to thank you for your support of your community newspaper this year. It has been an honour to be your voice, to celebrate our community, and to invest profits generated from our local advertisers back into the community that we serve. We look forward to doing it all again in 2024. Merry Christmas,

Bouquets and Brickbats BOUQUETS to the team and everyone involved in Christmas In Cooroy. What a fabulous, family-friendly fun event. We look forward to this event every year and each year, you continue to outdo yourselves. Bravo!

Bouquets to the beautiful Mal who paid for my groceries at the IGA counter because my mobile phone went flat just as I was about to pay and I couldn't access my card. You made me feel warm and fuzzy. Looking forward to returning the favour in this beautiful town of Pomona or where I'm needed.

BOUQUETS to the new dentist in Pomona. Very good at his job and lovely staff. They are absolutely beautiful and so handy and well-priced. BRICKBATS to the people who walk out of local cafes without paying for meals served/takeaways picked up. My 14-yearold daughter has her first part-time job in a local cafe and has been distressed by this selfish behaviour on her shifts. I know we're all under more cost-of-living pressures these days but if you can't afford to eat out or get takeaway then just don't do it!

Cooroy coffee venue Busstop Espresso to close A HOME-BASED Cooroy coffee venue will close its doors in February after part of its application was refused by council. Busstop Espresso's application for a change to a development approval for their roadside stall to include a food and drink outlet at 201 Mary River Road was rejected at a mid-November Noosa Council ordinary meeting. Noosa Council's Development and Regulation director Richard MacGillivray said the application to include a food and drink outlet (coffee shop) was inconsistent with the Noosa Plan 2020. "The food and drink outlet component of the application was refused as it was contrary to the site's rural zoning, and traffic and car parking impacts were not adequately addressed. "Officers based their recommendations on the current regulations and carefully considered all aspects of the Planning Scheme," he said.

Busstop Espresso owner Rob Noy said they understand it wasn't foreseen in the Noosa Plan but their business has organically filled a need. "We know what the plan says but we think there is a greater good in giving us a licence. "This decision will negatively impact our community and the hundreds of other people who use Busstop's services weekly. "We believe Busstop Espresso is not just another cafe; it is a unique and special place that greatly enhances the Cooroy community." Noosa Council CEO Larry Sengstock said council acknowledges the strong community connection the applicant has created with the operation since its opening. "This was a difficult, and for some, an unpopular decision; however council has a consistent approach to adhering to its existing regulations in the Planning Scheme.

"It's been the main factor in helping make Noosa Shire what it is today and if we go outside the scheme, it can set a concerning precedent, no matter how popular an operation is with sections of the community." Council received a 148-signature petition from residents requesting that the Noosa Plan be enforced and the unlawful operation cease. Busstop Espresso’s neighbour Joyce Brumley said as the closest neighbour, she has experienced firsthand some of the negative impacts daily. "I wanted to ensure my family's basic human right of free access into our home and safety for my children when crossing the road to catch the school bus. “Excess traffic generated by the business made this commute across the 80 km/h road for my children not just difficult but also dangerous. “I have had customers parking in front of my property posing privacy, safety

and security risks. “I have had some customers use my home as if it is some sort of designated smoking area. “And when two customers breached my home in June 2023 and came close to my twin daughters who were playing well inside our property, I reported this incident to the police.” Ms Brumley said she made several neighbourly verbal and documented attempts with the Noys. “Every time, I was disappointed with their trivial response. So when Noosa Council gave us all a chance to have our say, I had no choice but to object to this application as is my right as a ratepayer. “I am sure anyone in my position would do the same thing for their family.” Ms Brumley said she is not the critical reason the business has been asked to close down, contrary to comments on social media. “If this business met the criteria, they would have been approved.

Busstop Espresso location on Mary River Road, Cooroy

“I would like to commend our town planners and councillors for protecting our way of life and I hope that in time Busstop Espresso will find a new, suitable location to call home.” Mr Noy said while it is unlikely they can overturn the decision, they have launched an online petition. "We have a petition, change.org/p/save-thebusstop-espresso, and are aiming for 2,500 signatures from ratepayers in the community. "While we would like to overturn the decision, we have been advised there is

little chance of that. "So we will work our way through the next three months and look at what other options are available in council." Noosa Council approved the establishment of a new building for a roadside stall and Mr Sengstock said council will work with the applicant to look at options for an appropriate alternative site for the food and drink outlet. Busstop Espresso also operates The Other Busstop Cafe at Eden Private Hospital, Monday to Friday.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! The pavement has been repaired on the Cooroy railway overpass on Elm Street.

We wish all our customers a Merry Christmas on behalf of LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy and LiveLife Pharmacy Pomona. PAVEMENT repairs have been completed on Cooroy’s railway overpass. The works carried out last week addressed the condition of the road surface on the eastbound and westbound approaches of Elm Street. Member for Nicklin Robert Skelton MP said the resurfacing came following months of community feedback, along with consistent lobbying to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) from himself and Independent Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton MP. “A huge thank you to everyone in the Cooroy community who reached out to me and my office. It’s thanks to your advocacy that we’re seeing some action on this issue,” Mr Skelton said. Ms Bolton said even

though the bridge and the two historically dangerous intersections (the intersections of Elm & Myall Streets and Elm & Diamond Streets) are within the Nicklin State Electorate, she has continued to raise them with TMR and advocate on behalf of the community. “This has included the need for TMR to re-engage with residents on the intersections and hold a community meeting.” Ms Bolton said TMR also advised her that they had recently conducted an engineering review of the railway overpass structure. The review concluded that based on the current loading and network demands, the bridge is considered serviceable and is to be monitored and maintained accordingly. “Many Noosa hinterland

residents traverse this route daily to access their place of work, essential goods and services, as well as for their children’s educational needs. Safety for all must be a priority.” Ms Bolton said she is continuing efforts to see the two Cooroy intersections remedied as well. “We will continue our efforts alongside Nicklin MP Rob Skelton for the intersections to be made safer, and we encourage residents to lend their voice,” Ms Bolton said. Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton MP started a petition calling on TMR to restart community consultations for the two Cooroy intersections. The petition can be signed at: bit.ly/CooroyIntersections.

Car park becomes ‘people’s park’ NOOSA Main Beach car park will be partially closed from December 23 to January 7 to be transformed into a “people’s park”. The 42-car car park next to the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club will be converted into a temporary pop-up park to provide seating, shade, entertainment and a meeting place for residents and visitors. Noosa Council said the pop-up park

was in response to the large number of people and vehicles descending on the area during the busy Christmas New Year period. “The pop-up park is designed to provide a family-friendly atmosphere in an area that is traditionally heavily trafficked with people and vehicles.” Disability parks will remain on-site.

Pink Up Cooroy raises $21k for charity

Pink Up Cooroy organiser Carol Christensen and McGrath Breast Care Nurse Racheal Stevens.

THE McGrath Foundation is $21,000 better off thanks to the Cooroy community. Cooroy’s annual Pink Up Cooroy fundraiser in October raised $21,808.07 to help the foundation supply breast care nurses to men and women going through breast cancer. Pink Up Cooroy organiser Carol Christensen said she

is so proud of the amount raised and the wonderful community that has supported this fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation. “I want to thank the 63 businesses and community groups that donated prizes for raffles and auctions or donated cash to the fundraiser. “I also want to thank

Trevor and Averil Wilcox for their generous donation of a diamond that was raffled. “Thanks to the Cooroy Hotel, Your Mates Brewing Co. and Cooroy RSL for donating a gold coin from their schnitzel sales in October. “Thanks to my team of pink helpers for all the help planning and making the fundraiser such a success. You are all amazing. “And thanks to the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce for keeping the event on their calendar and letting me run with it. “Pink Up Cooroy is a true community event, so thanks to the community for supporting.” Ms Christensen said with lots of communities like Cooroy raising awareness in October, the federal government has committed to more funding for cancer care nurses. “This will allow the McGrath Foundation to recruit 100 new all-cancer care nurses to support all people with cancer.”

Cooroy police station on schedule

Moving of the old jailhouse. Photo: Shawn Justice | Facebook.

CONSTRUCTION of Cooroy’s new $4 million police facility is progressing as planned. Cooroy Police acting officer in charge Allan

O'Neill said it is all going to schedule. “The old jailhouse cell has been moved and the concrete slab has been poured.

“At this stage, it is all going to schedule.” The old police station and officer-in-charge residence on the corner of Garnet and Maple Streets was removed in September to make way for the new station which will have an office for the officer-in-charge, a general duties day room, an equipment store, a holding cell and an interview room. Works are expected to be completed in May/June 2024. The project is part of the $300 million Queensland Police Service’s capital works program which will deliver major new police facilities across Queensland.

“Planting was undertaken utilising mattocks to dig holes, a difficult task due to the thick natural regeneration of ground covers, grasses, and shrubs throughout the planting zone. “Additionally, Noosa Landcare has been managing weeds within the planting areas, treating Gympie Messmate regrowth from the hardwood plantations and pine wildlings from softwood plantations, lantana, camphor laurel, and a variety of other woody weeds. “This has been carried out in conjunction with the planting of trees in the Yurol and Ringtail State Forest.”

The public tables without shade umbrellas outside the Cooran Community Store.

FOLLOWING the removal of shade umbrellas in the public space on the main street of Cooran earlier this year, the Cooran Community Store has been asking Noosa Council to take responsibility and to provide shade and shelter. Cooran Community Store owner Elyse Patten said after council removed the shade umbrellas and offered no alternative, she noticed a disparity of shelter offered in Cooran compared with other Noosa shire towns and began talking to Mayor Clare Stewart, Cr Karen Finzel and Cr Amelia Lorentson about this “inequality”. “I have been asking council since March to take responsibility for this space and to provide shade and shelter. They are, shortsightedly, attempting to move the expense and responsibility to us, owners of the nearby business Cooran Community Store.

“While that would be long-term advantageous to the business, my concern is that future owners of the store may not share my view that this space should be freely accessible to the community at all times. “We believe that to foster a vibrant and connected community we need meeting spaces dedicated to that goal and we think this is a key location.” Councillor Amelia Lorentson said she requested that the issue of the shade umbrellas be decided by the full council. “I urged the council to provide temporary shade umbrellas, conduct community consultations for long-term shelter plans, allocate funds for additional shade trees, and consider a Cooran Recreation Precinct Plan." The motion received unanimous support from councillors at the general meeting. The full council

#SHOPLOCALTHISCHRISTMAS

agreed that the public space at 12 King Street is for community use and not private ownership. “This was a huge win for the people of Cooran who passionately advocated for the protection of this community space,” Cr Lorentson said. Ms Patten said it is a big win for the community. “A lot of people were saying there is no point in trying. I don't agree with that. I hope this is a shot of hope for our community to speak up when we need something and put our voices together. “We hope to get more shade for Cooran in the future, in the park and skate park. Cooran’s infrastructure is way behind other towns’ in the shire and I would love the community to get together and see what else we can do. Now we feel we can be heard, we will ask for more.”

The long-time Pomona resident, who has spent the past six years as captain and OIC of Pomona QFES Fire & Rescue Station, will hang up his uniform for the last time at the end of the month. Capt. They are a great group of people and I will certainly miss working with them. “For over 16 years, I have been involved with the training of firefighters throughout the region and state, and have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of new firefight-

New look, food for Kin Kin Hotel Cooroy Shoes’

Newly renovated Kin Kin Hotel chefs Mark Bunter and Oscar Holgado.

KIN Kin’s pub has reopened after extensive renovations. Kin Kin Hotel owner David Ezrine said it has been a labour of love after purchasing the property a couple of years ago. “We opened up the back barn area but then got kicked in the teeth with the floods so we decided to close up and renovate it properly.” David said they have taken

the 1915 building back to its original condition with modern requirements. “The building is one of the few heritage assets in Noosa and we wanted to do what they would have done 100 years ago. “There are things we’ve kept such as the many hats on the wall and a great collection of memorabilia.” The hotel’s front bar opened to the public on 30

November but the back area is still under construction. “After Christmas we will open the Chop House, as we are calling it. “It will be led by Oscar Holgado and will provide customers with a real farmto-plate experience. It will showcase different cuts of meat and Oscar and the team of chefs will have the opportunity to engage with people, providing an elevated food experience.” David said they aim to provide a new approach to food and hospitality while not forgetting who they are and what they’re doing. “What we're going to do is different. We will be looking to source all of our ingredients from local providers eventually and this includes talking to farmers, looking at the husbandry and working with them. “We’ll be doing our butchering on site, pickling our own veggies and making our own sauces. “We’ve had a great start with so many wonderful people in the area doing great things but it is going to take time to build these food supply chains.” David said the food and flavour is going to be exciting. “We’re going to be spe-

cialising in cooking over fire, smoking, brining and pickling, offering an interesting food program. “The bar menu will be small plate tastings of what the Chop House will generate, which will be a more extensive food offering.” The pub’s accommodation has also been restored to its original condition and will lend itself to group bookings. “Once we launch the accommodation, with separate rooms and a shared bathroom, it will be sold as a group booking. “And we will still have camping out the back.” David and his team, having also purchased The Black Ant cafe and restaurant across the road and other commercial properties on the main street, hope to make Kin Kin a destination for good food and hospitality. “We are trying to reinvent hospitality in a way we think might be missing in the region. “Our style is not to bring in a thousand people but to keep it authentic. “My role is to empower people, to curate wonderful people and opportunities to make Kin Kin a destination for good food and hospitality.”

Cooroy's Angels of Eden Maleny Dairies creams sprinkle Christmas magic the competition again

Eden Private Hospital’s Angels of Eden in front of this year’s display.

COOROY’S private rehabilitation hospital has been touched by angels. A team of dedicated Eden Private rehabilitation nursing staff has spent all year hand-making decorations to brighten the lives of the patients admitted to the hospital over December and January. Eden Private Hospital Director of Clinical Services Matthew Rowe said this group of dedicated nurses are referred to as the Angels

of Eden. “The Spirit of Christmas is a tradition at Eden Private. “These dedicated nursing staff have worked at Eden for a long time and are well known around the community for their dedication to rehabilitation nursing at Eden Private Hospital. “As nurses, they have dedicated their careers to helping others, and in my opinion deserve recognition as they are truly the Angels of Eden.” The Angels of Eden are

Penny Lovelace, Sarah Miller, Susana Sullivan, Ann-Marie Street, Amanda Robb, Janine Bishop and Deb Hunt. Penny said since she and Sarah started the Spirit of Christmas, it has become contagious. “Sarah is the one that inspires us all year with her creative ideas and then it just takes off. “Each year, one person selects the theme. This year the theme is angels. “Everyone gets involved. We handmade all the paper angels and even a couple of husbands came in to help us decorate. “A beautiful lady from Pomona made four stainedglass angels and I bought the mannequin and dressed her for the display.” Penny said the Spirit of Christmas is all about showing care and commitment to each other and their patients. “Here at Eden, we support and nurture each other. It’s a family environment. We would love the community to come and be involved. Drop in and see our display and have a photo in front of our angel wings.”

Maleny Dairies with their award at the Sunshine Coast Business Awards gala in November.

FOR the second time, Maleny Dairies has won the Large Business of the Year for Food and Agribusiness category at the Sunshine Coast Business Awards. Maleny Dairies CEO and Cooroy resident Stephen Tait said the award recognises what they have achieved in the past year.

"It's wonderful for our farmers and staff to receive this recognition given what we have achieved over the past 12 months. "Since October 2022, we have brought three new products to market: sour cream, lactose-free full cream milk, and lactose-free pure cream. In 2024, we will

continue to innovate and create new products for our loyal consumer base." Maleny Dairies sources milk from 11 different local farms, and processes and bottles it at their plant. Owners Ross and Sally Hopper said the flexibility and control afforded to them by managing their plant has facilitated the opportunity for them to pay their farmers at a much higher rate per litre of milk. “In turn, this has enabled the farmers to keep their herds healthy and their farms viable.” Stephen said they are all about paying farmers top dollar for their premium milk. “There's not a day that goes by where I am not overwhelmed by the amount of work, care and love that our farmers and the Maleny Dairies team put into producing our fresh, pure, quality milk and dairy products.” The Coast’s longest-established business awards, the Sunshine Coast Business Awards, recognise the many business success stories throughout the region.

For a limited time only Dr Celestino and Dr Rakib will bulk bill all concession card holders and children under 18 years. This applies to NEW patients only. Important: FREE initial skin check using advanced dermatoscope and mole photography by Dr Hasan

branch manager Steve Clarke was tasked with choosing the winner. Steve said he drove around to all of the houses, taking a short video of each, which he then took back to the office for the entire team to provide their input and vote on the winner. “The winner of this year’s Cooroy Christmas lights competition is 3 Dianella Court, Cooroy, and second is 6 Bagnalls Road, Cooroy.

“One of the main reasons we chose 3 Dianella Court as the winner was because it had a flashing Cooroy sign which we liked and the homeowners had made the most of the whole space.” Looking for something to do? Be sure to go for a drive and check out all the entrants. There are also some impressive light displays on Kauri Street, Cooroy.

SunnyKids launches Christmas appeal

SunnyKids CEO Kathleen Hope.

DOMESTIC and family violence organisation SunnyKids has launched its annual Christmas appeal, Sunny Christmas for Kids. This year, SunnyKids is asking the community to consider what Christmas may look like for a child impacted by domestic and family violence. SunnyKids CEO Kathleen Hope said for many of the

children and families in their care, Christmas isn't filled with joy and delicious food and an abundance of gifts. “In fact, for many of these children, Christmas is a time of heightened awareness of the presents they will not receive and the obvious breakdowns that are occurring within their own family situation. “Sadly, for many of the

children we care for, Christmas highlights all that they do not have and amplifies the mess, the noise and the chaos. For many of the children we care for, Christmas is a period painted with comparisons. A stark reminder of what they don't have. A day of the year that's never joyous. Just another day.” SunnyKids is asking the community to support their Sunny Christmas for Kids Appeal to help give the gift of a brighter future. “For as little as $600 or $50 a month, you can ensure a child impacted by domestic and family violence receives the support they need. “With your donation to our Christmas appeal, we can ensure these children receive counselling, medical care, food and clothing, access to school supplies, educational support and expert safety planning to keep them safe and away from harm.” Anyone who would like to donate can do so at: sunnyxmas-for-kids-2023.raisely. com/

An inspiring young heart

The Kindness Club has sent Toby (pictured) a package to express their gratitude and admiration.

COOROY’S The Kindness Club loves hearing stories about kindness.

The Kindness Club organiser, Wendy Scott, said when the club heard about a boy using his free time and pocket money to help others, they were very inspired. “The children heard about 12-year-old Toby from his nanna Jeanette who lives in Cooroy. “Toby spends much of his free time and pocket money helping others. He volunteers at his local sleepbus and with local Hervey Bay charity We Care 2, and donates toys to Toy Run. “He collects and donates food for those in need, and every few weeks he buys chocolates and flowers to surprise others. “Toby was a 2023 final-

ist in Awards Australia’s Queensland Community Achievement Awards for his many kind deeds.” To express their gratitude and admiration, The Kindness Club children sent Toby an appreciation certificate, drawings, and a necklace and pendant. “The children want Toby to feel the warmth of kindness that he bestows on so many. The world is a much better place with Toby in it.” Wendy said The Kindness Club would like to thank the community for their support again this year. “And wish you all a wonderful and safe Christmas. “With lots of love from The Kindness Club.”

NDSHS year 7 and 8 students at Bli Bli Aqua Park for their rewards day.

NOOSA District State High School (NDSHS) Pomona Campus students have enjoyed a rewards day at Bli Bli Aqua Park. The excursion was for year 7 and 8 students for their attendance and alignment with the school's Positive Behaviour for Learning values.

Year 7 Coordinator Callum Gordon said the students displayed exemplary behaviour and school spirit. "There were multiple other schools at the water park; our students set high standards for respectful behaviour and community engagement," he said.

Santa calls a fun way to teach kids UNTIL Christmas Eve, Santa is just a phone call away from over 15,000 payphones around the country. Children around Australia can have a Christmas chat with Santa, Ms Claus and Santa’s right-hand elf by dialling # HO HO HO ((#464646) from a Telstra payphone. Telstra area general manager Michael Marom said Telstra will then put Aussie kids in direct contact with Santa’s switchboard where they can press 1 for Santa, 2 for Mrs Claus, or 3 for

Our hospitals are open and accepting patients this Christmas holiday season 2023 has been another testing year and many of us will be looking forward to taking time off and enjoying the holiday season with our loved ones. However, Christmas is not always the most wonderful time of the year for many and the New Year may not begin how you had wished. The extra pressures during this time can be srtressful and stressful for some individuals and families. Anxiety, depression and substance abuse can be exacerbated by the demands and expectations, whether they be physical, emotional or financial. To those who may feel the strain of the season and the start of the New Year, I want to assure you that you are not alone, nor do you have to struggle without help. Please reach out to others during this period to ensure everyone gets the empathy and humanity needed. I hope we all get into the true spirit of Christmas and can help each other this holiday season and into 2024. Wishing you all the very best, Mary Williams

Forever Fitter with Ange

Let's talk real talk about losing weight DID you know, the top two New Year's resolutions are to exercise more and lose some weight? For the latter, diets might seem like the go-to, but in reality, there's a better way to go about it. Why diets don't work They put you on the weight gain/loss rollercoaster. Diets can give you a quick win, but can you keep it up? Most likely, no. Quick weight loss often means saying bye-bye to your muscles and saying hello to a terrible relationship with food and fluctuating weight, which usually trends upwards over time. They aren't personalised Your age, metabolism, and how much you move are so crucial in getting your diet in balance for you, but most diets ignore them. This is generally because they don't have enough information about you to make them successful. What works for Jane won't work

for Jill; everyone's answer for food is very personal to them. Way too restrictive Diets usually start with a list of things you are not allowed to eat. The problem is, forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest! We can become fixated on the foods we are told we aren't allowed. Withholding certain foods can also leave you lacking the vitamins and minerals your body needs, or even worse, make you hate on food altogether. Ignoring the feels Emotional eating, stress, life – these things matter, but diets act like they're not a factor. Spoiler: they are! We are humans, not robots, so we need flexible, calculated methods to help us grow past things like emotional or hormonal eating. Calories ≠ quality Some diets focus heavily on calories while paying little to no attention to where

those calories are coming from. Your body needs various nutrition depending on your age, weight, gender and personal situation. Just focusing on calories alone will not get you to your goal. A MUCH better approach to losing weight this year would be: Smart learning Get to know your body, and understand what it needs for you to live the life you want to live. Learning what makes you feel good and what you like to do are crucial in finding your forever food and weight solution. Don't focus only on the scales When your body changes, it will do so gradually, because losing weight is a healing process. It didn't take a week to put on; it's not going to take a week to take it off! For my clients we weigh in once a week or once a month – whichever they choose. Aside from

that, we measure progress by how well they adhere to their new food plan, how well their clothes are fitting and how much more energy they have. These successes are much better indicators of long-term weight loss success than the number on the scales. Eat what sparks joy You love pizza? Great. Enjoy it. Pick foods you love, and make your taste buds dance. It's a party, not a punishment. The magic lies in knowing WHEN and HOW MUCH of these foods you should eat. These are things an educated professional can help you learn. Buddy up with a Forever Fitter dietitian A dietitian is your ticket to success. They have dedicated their lives to helping people just like you achieve their goals. They have studied for upwards of three years at uni and have full-time experience with a wide variety of people just like you! They'll whip up a plan that's all about you – realistic, doable, and not a diet jail. We have dietitians working for us at Forever Fitter. Please get in touch if you would like to connect. and humans behaving a little less inhibited than usual can be a recipe for trouble. Be aware and let the children know that chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, contains compounds that can cause symptoms including hyperactivity, tremors, diarrhoea, vomiting and potentially death, due to effects on the heart. Symptoms usually begin within a few hours of ingestion and your only clue may be the remains of a wrapper. Grapes and sultanas contain an unknown compound that in dogs leads to kidney failure. The sensitivity of individual animals to this compound varies but cannot be predicted, so it is prudent to seek veterinary attention for any dog that has ingested grapes and grape by-products. Even with successful management of the initial crisis, some dogs go on to have lifelong kidney damage. Treatment for both of these situations involves inducing vomiting, stomach flushing

and, if severely affected, intensive care. Prompt attention maximises the odds of a good outcome. The other compound worth touching on is xylitol, an artificial sweetener found in some lollies. When eaten by a dog, xylitol causes an excessive release of insulin, leading to dangerously low blood sugar levels and in some cases, liver failure. Symptoms include weakness, collapse and seizures. Treatment involves inducing vomiting followed by intensive care to stabilise blood glucose and manage the effects on the liver. Well, enough of the doom and gloom. Merry Christmas! Thank you for your ongoing support in 2023. From Craig, Leanne and the team

AS we approach another year’s end, many of us look forward to taking some time off for festivities and frolics. No one wants their fun ruined by an unplanned visit to the vet, especially if the situation was avoidable. With this in mind, I feel a few tips for a trouble-free Christmas break are in order. Firstly, ensure all tick preventatives are up to date. Recent rains will have encouraged these critters to go forth and multiply, making an already active population more so. The other frequent cause of animals needing emergency care at this time of year relates to pets, especially dogs, eating things they shouldn’t. If your pet is not particularly food motivated, the chances of them ingesting something potentially harmful are much reduced. If, on the other hand, you have a pet such as mine who will have a good go at eating anything smaller than his head, extra care is warranted. Abundant food

WITH Christmas just around the corner, female snakes are nesting while male snakes are feasting. Snake Catcher Noosa’s Luke Huntley said female snakes are now settling down to lay their eggs and have their babies, and the boys are out getting something to eat. “The eastern brown snake is the world's second most venomous snake but she's still a mumma. “This one (pictured) I relocated from under a front door path. She was about to lay her eggs. “Towards her tail end is all swollen and she looks full. They are all eggs. She would have laid those eggs under the path and then come in and out getting sun and then wrapped herself around them to incubate them.” Luke said this time of year is the incubation period and generally a little slower before the big rush in January for the second half of snake season. “So keep an eye out everyone and have a great Christmas.” Luke and his team can be contacted 24/7 on 0499 920 290.

Sandy Bolton Independent State Member for Noosa WE are heading into the Christmas season, and thankfully we have received some much-needed rain. However, even though the fire ban has been lifted, please remain vigilant and do not take any risks. One minor decision or action can lead to the devastation of our community, so please check the information regarding getting ready for all situations, including water supply shortages for those on tanks, at the link below. Regarding infrastructure, our ongoing efforts for better connectivity for residents have included seeking a trial train shuttle from Gympie North to Nambour to connect with the timetable there, and bus services that address gaps to access work and medical services. Funding has now been secured for the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) for consulta-

tion on a Northern Sunshine Coast Transport Strategy. In addition, consultation on the planned Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line, which happily was not cut in the federal government's review, is also underway. Following our updates on the Lake Macdonald Dam Upgrade and a meeting with Seqwater, final planning is progressing and they are on track to provide dates for community consultation by the end of this year, pending approvals. With Six Mile Bridge #7 replacement now open, it was wonderful to drive across after much advocacy starting back when I was a councillor. We look forward to the official opening with everyone and some bubbles! Have a wonderful, safe holiday season! Even though my office is closed from Friday 22 December to Monday 8 January 2024, important contact numbers are available at SandyBolton.com/KeyContacts and you can always contact me if urgent via Messenger. We look forward to seeing you out and about enjoying our beautiful home over the break! Sandy

Clare Stewart Noosa Mayor THANK you so much to all who contributed to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. Your support has helped local charities reach more people in need in Noosa this festive season. This year’s appeal supported the Salvation Army Noosa, St Vincent de Paul Noosa, Santa’s Classy Helpers, SunnyKids, Womenkind and Youturn Youth Support. Noosa Council’s ‘Go Noosa’ free holiday buses return for the Christmas and New Year period. Now until 21 January 2024, five free Translink services run across the shire. For more information on the free bus service, visit translink.com. au or noosa.qld.gov.au. As we come to the close of 2023, the year has been challenging for so many in our community, with rising costs of living, increased housing shortages and the impacts of a major weather event still being felt. Among all of this, however, the

Phone: (07) 5442 6888 Mobile: 0400 737 595 4 Jarrah St, Cooroy www.ecocottages.com.au resilience and spirit of the Noosa Shire community has so clearly shone through. It is something that continues to inspire me daily. This is my last column before Christmas and it is the final time I will have the opportunity as mayor to wish you all a very merry Christmas. I hope that your Christmas is full of joy and happiness, and that celebrations and festivities are spent in the presence of loved ones. As we turn our minds and hearts to those across the world who are suffering this Christmas, we are reminded of the blessings that have been bestowed upon us, and how lucky we truly are. On behalf of all councillors and all at Noosa Council, we wish you, your families and loved ones, a safe, happy and peaceful Christmas and every blessing. Merry Christmas, Clare.

Llew O’Brien Federal Member for Wide Bay AS we approach Christmas, our roads, particularly the Bruce Highway, will be very busy during the school holidays with people travelling to visit family and friends or heading off on holiday, and I encourage everyone to drive very carefully. A study undertaken by the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety Queensland has tragically identified that the Christmas and New Year period is the most dangerous time for traffic crashes. Road crashes during the Christmas season are 21 per cent

more likely to result in death or serious injury than crashes that occur over the rest of the year, so please be careful and cautious behind the wheel. Like many others in the region, I am keeping a close eye on the status of the Kin Kin Quarry vegetation clearing application currently undergoing assessment via the Environmental Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act. The application is still pending, awaiting further information from the quarry operator before the minister makes her decision on the future of this vital piece of critical habitat. Keep an eye on your letterbox for my summer newsletter which will be delivered to all households shortly, and I wish everyone a happy Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. Llew

Wishing the Community and our Valued Customers a safe and Merry Christmas. All the best for a Prosperous New Year.

Cooroy Horse and Pony Club is celebrating a stellar year.

Ph: 5400 8896 1/12 Maple Street, Cooroy

AS another year draws to a close, so does Cooroy Horse & Pony Club’s season. Cooroy Horse & Pony Club secretary Leeona Baxter said this year the club grew in new members, with many accolades achieved at local and state levels along with a lot of personal equestrian goals reached. “The long-standing friendly rivalry was put to the test at the annual Pomona versus Cooroy PC challenge, with Cooroy coming home

victorious and retaining the much-prized challenge cup. “Our annual gymkhana was a huge success attracting 80 riders from the region along with 200 family, friends and spectators. “Such an event requires lots of work behind the scenes by the club committee and many volunteers and would not be possible without the ongoing support of our local businesses and community.” Leeona said on behalf of

the club and its members, they would like to thank the Cooroy community for its continued support of the club. “We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season and look forward to another year of growth and comradeship at Cooroy Horse and Pony Club in 2024. “If you would like to find out what pony club is about or enquire about joining, please email cooroypc@outlook. com.au.”

Private equestrian property, Private hinterland renovated Queenslander living with views Sale by Tender

IF you are looking for privacy, luxury, views and a little bit of history in the Noosa hinterland, then look no further – this 23-acre property has it all. Found at the end of a no through road, the 100-yearold Queenslander – the old schoolmaster’s house from the nearby town of Kin Kin – was transported to this idyllic location seven years ago and has been beautifully renovated and added to, using the highest of standards including VJ walls, ornate cornices, polished timber floors and heritage fittings. With four generously sized bedrooms plus large office and sewing room, it also offers the opportunity for an Airbnb, with two entrances and two separate living spaces. A parents’ retreat is situat-

ed at one end of the house with its own en-suite and walk-in robe, and overlooks the 9x5m deep fresh-water pool which blends seamlessly into the landscape and has breathtaking views to the hills beyond. The huge open-plan living – with slow combustion wood fire, dining, and modern equipped kitchen with walk-in pantry – flows out onto a large, north-facing verandah. A second living-roomcome-library leads to the main, generously sized bathroom with bathtub and laundry cleverly hidden behind sliding doors. The property boasts a twocar carport, a three-bay shed plus two large undercover stables, and tack shed plus multiple paddocks fenced with horse-safe electric and timber fencing. There is a

There is a newly erected olympic-size 20 x 60m sand and timber fenced dressage arena (completed in 2023) which is situated within its own private paddock amongst multiple horse-safe paddocks and a private entrance. This property also has a second income revenue in place with three agistment paddocks, all with horse-safe fencing, shelters, water and shed and, most appealingly, a separate road entrance. There is council approval in place for a second dwelling. All you need to do is put your own cabin or cottage there; a brand new BioCycle system is already installed.

real estate

Market wrap-up with Sirah AS we wave goodbye to 2023 and usher in a new year, it is a perfect moment to reflect on the dynamic Noosa hinterland real estate market. DECEMBER has historically been the precursor to a flurry of activity, with buyers typically spending summer months researching potential homes, leading to a significant increase in enquiries come January and February. Recent data from REA

(realestate.com.au) highlights this trend, revealing a remarkable 23 per cent increase in visits to their Buy section over the past three years, totalling 183 million in summer 22/23. This surge in interest translates into a five per cent rise in enquiries during January and February compared to the annual average and an 11 per cent growth in summertime buyer enquiries over the last three years. Notably, one in seven buy enquiries in January stems from buyers who first viewed the property in December. Looking ahead, the Noosa hinterland market shows

encouraging signs of growth. With an expanding population, partly fuelled by the return of overseas migration, and potential interest rate cuts in 2024, our region’s property demand appears robust. Our latest Suburb Flyover Report offers invaluable insights for homeowners and prospective buyers. To delve deeper, scan the QR code and see how your suburb is performing. At Hinternoosa, 2023 has been an exceptional year. Engaging with over 100 new prospective buyers each week and achieving an 84 per cent auction clearance rate, we have led the field in

both property sales volume and record prices. Highlights have included the auction of 18 Miva St, Cooroy, setting a new benchmark for in-town Cooroy properties. Similarly, 71 Dahlia Rd, Verrierdale’s auction fetched an impressive $2,100,000. The swift two-week sale of 256-266 Verrierdale Rd for $3,000,000; plus 9 Crystal St, Cooroy, which sold under the hammer for a street record of $1,100,000; and 84 Botanica Circuit, Doonan, which sold in two days for a top price, not only underscore our impact on setting benchmark prices but also

our ability to revitalise properties that had previously sat idle on the market with other agencies. Our commitment to maximising results for our clients has enabled them to progress to their next life chapter sooner, in the best possible position. As we celebrate the festive season, we extend our heartfelt wishes to everyone for a wonderful 2024. The Noosa hinterland continues to be not just a place, but a lifestyle, and the team at Hinternoosa are thrilled to be part of your real estate journey in this beautiful region.
