Memorial for Derek, Shayne, June and Ricky

IT was one of the biggest tragedies in Cooroy.

Derek Lange, 11; his mother June, 30; Shayne Parker, 9; and Ricky Von Blanckensee, 18, all died in a tragic accident on Saturday 5 December 1981.

Now, four decades later, their families finally have somewhere to come and remember their loved ones and everything that has been lost since that terrible day.

A memorial bench seat in memory of Derek, June, Shayne and Ricky has been installed behind the

Cooroora Woodworkers Club overlooking Cooroy Creek.

Shayne Parker’s father George said the memorial has been a long time coming.

“A lot of people in Cooroy didn’t know what happened. It was forgotten and that is sad.

“This memorial means a lot to our family. It is something for our kids and grandkids later on and for the town.”

Cliff Von Blanckensee said they will never have closure but the memorial will serve as a legacy to those they lost.

“We will never have closure, because to us we will always remember our little brother.

“But now generations will see that bench and see that plaque and that will go on forever. We just want to remember the families that were lost.”

Husband of June and father of Derek, Terry Lange, said he would like to thank everyone who has put in the work to achieve this.

“I really wish that Robyn and I could be there for this occasion but unfortunately it’s just not possible at the moment.

“Once again, thanks very

much to all concerned who made this happen. It really means a lot to me and the rest of my family.”

June’s daughter and Derek’s sister, Rachelle Dewhurst, said she is moved by the memorial.

“This endeavour has a community spirit, just like Cooroy all those years ago. It is nice to know that in this present day, this spirit does still exist.

“Thank you to all those involved for your efforts. They are most appreciated.”

The installation of the memorial bench seat has been a community effort.

With the full support of

the families, the Cooroy Rag advocated for a memorial to remember Derek, June, Shayne and Ricky.

The Cooroora Woodworkers Club built a timber bench seat out of local timbers and invited the seat to be installed on their premises.

After a meeting at council chambers between Noosa Council and the Cooroy Rag staff, both parties met at the woodworkers’ clubhouse and agreed on a location for the memorial seat.

Local concreter Andrew Porter donated his time and expertise to pour the slab for the seat, and

Cordwells Concrete donated the concrete.

The families were the first to view the memorial bench seat last Friday (pictured).

An official unveiling of the memorial will be held on Saturday 1 April at 10 am at the Cooroora Woodworkers Club, 8 Lower Mill Road, Cooroy.

The community is invited to attend the event, along with the families, Cooroy Rag staff, Cooroora Woodworkers Club members, councillors, council staff, and others who have been instrumental in the installation of this memorial.

IT was bittersweet seeing the families of the four people tragically killed in Cooroy Creek finally receiving a memorial in honour of their loved ones.

While this memorial provides somewhere for them to come and remember Derek, June, Shayne and Ricky, it will never ease the grief of losing their loved ones.

It has been an honour for us, the Cooroy Rag staff, to be trusted by the families to advocate for this memorial on their behalf.

We can’t thank enough those who have been instrumental in bringing this memorial to fruition: the families, Steve and Ian and the Cooroora Woodworkers Club, Jane from Noosa Council, Mayor Clare Stewart, Max Arbuthnot, Andrew Porter, local businesses that offered supplies and everyone who offered support.

We hope this memorial will serve as a legacy to Derek, June, Shayne and Ricky, and remind our community and visitors of everything that has been lost since that tragic day.

THIS is a 1914 map of the Cooroy area that advertised blocks of land near the old showground. The original advertisement, on thick

leathery paper, was discovered by a Gosford friend, ‘genealogist’ Bernie Childs, in the Ballina Library store. Realising it was of little interest there, he sent

it to me – a ‘born and bred’ Cooroy-ite - and I gave the original to my old friend Rob Sharry, a strong member of the Historical Society, for the society but when I checked, the good ladies there assured me it wasn’t recorded, so all I can think is that his son might have it from Rob’s papers. Lucky I made a couple of scans – one of which is this photo.

This particular photo is of a drawing of course, of a large section of the rural area of Cooroy, but it is advertising land in Cooroy township – blocks big enough for a house cow, perhaps.

It also has indications of existing, imagined or gazetted roads and indicates what looks like timber allotments and, more interestingly, who the registered owners were.

The exhibition seeks to explore oneself through reflection in a mirror. Each artist was challenged to create two artworks: one a portrait on an actual mirror, and the second a work which could be a painting or sculpture that contains their reflection.

A special morning tea to explore the exhibition was held on 8 March for IWD.

Kevin said more than 100 women attended the morning tea at BFAC. “It was a great event. There was an upbeat vibe and lots of catering compliments.

Noosa Council councillor Karen Finzel said the event was a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women around the world and to recognize the ongoing struggle for gender equality.

“As women, we have made significant strides in recent years, but there is still much work to be done. Women still face discrimination and barriers in many areas of life, including in the workplace, in politics, and in their personal lives.

“But we are not alone in this fight. On IWD, millions of women around the world came together to demand change and to fight for a future where every woman has the opportunity to reach her full potential.”

Other upcoming events around IWD at Cooroy BFAC include a workshop and the opening of a new show.

The Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (BFAC) held exhibitions and celebratory events around this year’s IWD.

Kevin Wilson said there was a large turnout for the opening night for three major

THE speed limit on Kin Kin Road in Pomona has been reduced.

The 1.2 km section between Exhibition Street and Subway Avenue intersections, locally known as Factory Street, has been reduced to 50 km/hour.

Transport and Main Roads (TMR) conducted a speed limit review in response to community concerns.

TMR Minister Mark Bailey MP said they’ve listened to the community and the existing 60 km/h speed limit will

be reduced to 50 km/h on this stretch near the shops.

“The recommendation to permanently lower the speed limit was endorsed by the local Speed Management Committee following the review.

“The committee included representatives from the Queensland Police Service, Noosa Shire Council and TMR.”

Mr Bailey said when looking at speed limits a range of factors are considered, including road function, road-

side environment, prevailing traffic speeds and crash history.

“Driving to the conditions, including speeds appropriate to the environment, saves lives, and I urge all motorists to observe the changes when they come into effect.

“The Palaszczuk Government will be delivering almost $3.1 billion of road and transport infrastructure projects across the Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas over the next four years.”

Council unveils brand refresh

FOR the first time in 30 years, Noosa Council has refreshed its brand to complement the soon-to-be-released Corporate Plan.

CEO Scott Waters said given the extensive work on developing the Corporate Plan, a new blueprint for council, it was timely to implement a more modern, flexible refresh of the council brand.

“The previous logo and branding has certainly served the organisation well, but as we move to an agile,

contemporary organisation, it’s important to respect the past and acknowledge the modern, professional approach of this council.

“The change really allows us, as a major employer in the shire, to show who we are, what we deliver and what we value,” Mr Waters said.

The brand refresh has been designed to respect the integrity of the iconic boronia wildflower which was part of the 1990 design, but with a refreshed image and identity that portrays a modern, agile and customer-centric organisation and is more accessible for the visually impaired.

THE Cooroy Rag wouldn’t be the paper it is today without Judy Painter.

In 2000, the Cooroy local, along with another longtime local and friend, Deb Boyle, turned the Cooroy Rag into a not-for-profit and gave it back to the community.

Judy said the reasoning for this was at the time there were newspapers looking to buy the paper and shut it down.

“The Rag would have been lost, perhaps forever.”

During its 60-plus years of publishing history, the Cooroy Rag has had other names and many owners but for the past 20 years, it has been a 100 per cent community-owned newspaper, giving its profits back to the community it serves.

“This significant ‘gift’ has injected over $1 million back into the community

a legacy

We send our best wishes from our family to yours during this festive time

over the years,” Judy said.

Then COVID hit and the paper was closed down.

“So I came back and volunteered my time to get the paper back into circulation.

“And with the help of Janet Webb and Alex Purcell and the amazing support of the community that understands the importance of owning its own paper, we were able to kick the Cooroy Rag off again.”

What started as a sixweek volunteering stint, turned into an almost threeyear journey for Judy.

“It has been so much fun working on the paper again. Our community is so lucky to have such a professional and dedicated team.

“I love working alongside Alex, Jodi, Kristina, Peta and our wonderful volunteer proofreader Lorraine and the other team members we have had along the way.

“We have made this paper the best it has ever been. We have introduced puzzles and classifieds and brought more community involvement into the paper than it has ever had before.”

While Judy has now stepped down from her position as sales manager with the Cooroy Rag, she said this doesn’t mean she has stepped away for good.

“Even though the ocean is calling and my husband Ray and I are looking at heading off to islands still to be explored, I will continue with the Cooroy Rag in a consultancy position.

“I will still attend functions when I’m not wandering beaches and will still be here to support staff whenever needed.”

And the paper will still run pics of her when she’s not looking.

for flood-affected

LOCAL residents impacted by the 2022 floods are being invited to catch up with Council on a weekly basis.

Noosa Council has arranged a weekly community event in Cooroy to bring together members of the community who have been affected by the 2022 floods. Noosa Council Community Services Director Kerri Contini said the weekly Sip and Social aims to foster connection and conversations.

“As the recovery program continues across the hinterland, a sip and social event will be held every Saturday for Cooroy, Pomona, Black Mountain and Federal residents.

“Open to everyone, we hope that Sip and Social will foster connection, understanding and unity, stirring up conversations around the topics of acceptance and resilience.

“Residents are encouraged to bring friends and

join us for free coffee.”

The event will be held in Cooroy at Busstop Espresso (201 Mary River Road, Cooroy) from 9 am to 10 am on Saturdays.

“Council has employed a Community Recovery & Resilience Officer to work closely with those residents impacted by last year’s floods. She regularly visits the impacted communities and hopes this sip and social event will help residents to reconnect” Kerri said.

Couple’s lifetime together

COOROY couple Jim and Ruth Grant recently celebrated their blue sapphire anniversary.

The couple marked the occasion with family and friends at Cooroy RSL on 25 February, exactly 65 years to the day.

Daughter Sue Pearce said it was a fabulous day.

“Mum and Dad had a wonderful afternoon at the Cooroy RSL celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary with 82 guests.”

Sue said the couple first met in Innisfail when Ruth used to walk past Jim’s property.

“Dad was a Pinbarren man who went north to find his way. He had a virgin block of land at Mena Creek (the home of Paronella Park) that he was clearing to plant crops and build a shed on.

“Mum’s family were farmers around Caboolture and they went to Mena Creek to help one of her brothers establish a dairy farm.

“The farm was next to Dad’s block and Mum’s other brother had a dairy farm on the other side, so they were neighbours.

“Mum and Dad met when Mum used to walk past Dad’s block between the two dairy farms.

“He happened to be busy at the shed every time she walked past,” Sue laughed. After a courtship, the couple married at the Presbyterian Church in Innisfail.

“They then lived at the property in Mena Creek until 1974 when they sold and moved to Cooroy.

“They bought a house in Kauri Street and, nearly 50 years later, they still live there.”

Sue said after moving to Cooroy, Jim worked with his uncle building spray races for cattle dips.

“They travelled all over Queensland, NSW and the Northern Territory building them. After that, Dad was employed at the top sawmill on Holts Road in Cooroy.

“And when he finished there he went and worked for the Bonnells’ carting company, driving trucks, carting gravel and anything else.

“He worked there until he retired.

“Mum was the tuckshop convenor at the high school. She also joined the Cooroy CWA and is still a member today.

“They both played tennis in the early days, then later joined bowls. They are both good community members.”

Local selected as finalist in global award

Multi Award Winning

A COOROY woman has been named as a finalist for a global award.

Robyn Simpson, founder of local social enterprise Choose the ‘Tude, has been selected as a finalist for the 2023 Women Changing the World Awards.

The Women Changing the World Awards celebrate and recognize women globally who are achieving outstanding success in areas such as sustainability, humanitarian work, leadership, advocacy, tech, product development, education, health and innovation.

A working mum of two, Robyn said Choose the ‘Tude is dedicated to helping working parents develop healthy, happy, future citizens through positive

publishing and memorable events.

“Everything we do is driven by our desire to raise happy humans and create kind communities in order to reverse damaging and costly social trends such as bullying.

“We do this by raising awareness, creating tools and resources for parents and educators and organising community events to encourage personal connections and restore the ‘village’ support network.”

Robyn is also the co-producer of Indelible, a docuseries which identifies the root causes of bullying and calls on subject matter experts across the fields of neuroscience, psychology and parenting to provide insights

on how to truly prevent bullying before it becomes an issue. Robyn said she believes bullying is preventable with the right knowledge, tools, support and dedication. The work we do is as beneficial to the adults as much as the children we are raising. Our events create opportunities for whole community engagement and promote positive messages and inspire acts of kindness.

“Each event supports at least one related not-forprofit so we can lift others up while communicating to a broad audience.”

The winners of the 2023 Women Changing the World Awards will be announced at an event in London, United Kingdom, on 18 April 2023.

RSL renos complete NoosaCare appoints new CEO

LOCAL aged care provider NoosaCare has appointed a new CEO.

Grant Simpson joined the NoosaCare team in late January this year, bringing with him extensive experience in the aged care, medical research and community care sectors, having worked as a director of marketing & partnerships at Anglicare Sydney, foundation director at Neuroscience Research Australia, CEO at MWP Care and CEO of Lifeline South West Qld.

Grant said it’s a privilege to be a part of the NoosaCare team.

“I am thoroughly impressed with the dedication our staff and volunteers have to support the dignity and individuality of each of our residents. Supporting people in our community as they age is a vital area for us all and I’m excited to play a role in charting NoosaCare’s future to ensure the choices and well-being of our residents are at the heart of all we do.

“A key area of focus for NoosaCare will be the development of a new strategic plan to enable NoosaCare to be well-positioned to meet the future needs of older people. We are reviewing which areas of support will be most in demand in the future and which NoosaCare is best equipped to deliver against.

“Building a skilled and capable workforce is a critically important area for NoosaCare. Our goal is to be an employer of choice in the Noosa region, attracting staff who are dedicated to the care of others and who are looking for career development pathways.”

NoosaCare’s president Ann Harrap said following the Royal Commission there are significant changes taking place in the aged care sector, and residential aged care facilities need to adapt to stay viable and sustainable.

“The board welcomes Grant’s experience in driving strategic change but also his new ideas to help shape NoosaCare’s future in the best interests of our residents,” she said.

AFTER six long weeks, the renovations at the Cooroy RSL are complete.

Cooroy RSL functions manager Leanne White said the bar has been under construction since 30 January.

“A major part of the reno-

vations was replacing the old bar with a fresh modern bar, with better functionality and equipment.

“It has really opened the club, making it feel bigger and brighter even though it is the same footprint.

“The reception and the

kitchen also had a mini facelift to complement the impressive bar.”

Leanne said the response from the customers has been positive.

To check out the new bar area, drop into Cooroy RSL at 25 Maple St, Cooroy.

WE can all agree the 2023 year is moving along at full speed and one doesn’t have to look far to see Noosa alive with activities throughout the shire highlighting our desire for connections to people, place and stories.

International Women’s Day 2023 was widely celebrated throughout Noosa to acknowledge the achievements of women around the world and to recognise the ongoing struggle for gender equality. As women, we have made significant strides in recent years, but there is still much work to be done. Women still face discrimination and barriers in many areas of life, including the workplace, in politics and in their personal lives. Noosa Council currently has plenty on offer to engage with our local residents and warmly welcomes everyone to have their say on what matters most to them via ‘your say’ links found on the Council website or by dropping into one of the pop-up events being held at various locations throughout the shire to have a friendly chat with the

staff. The Corporate Plan has been developed with our community in mind, outlining a strategic roadmap to guide council decision-making in supporting the community vision for our shire which has been shaped by community feedback and strengthened by five key pillars to include environment, future, prosperity, community and excellence: yoursay. noosa.qld.gov.au/corporate-plan-2023-2028.

The key focus of the plan is protecting the amenity of Noosa, enhancing our lifestyles, and preserving our rich natural environment. Let us know what you think of the final draft before it is finalised.

In a quest to discover the stories and places, character and values that are important to our residents, the Noosa Shire Heritage staff are inviting you to have your say about what is important and what you think defines Noosa’s heritage and character: yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au/ noosa-local-heritage-review.

During March, Council is seeking to gain a better

understanding of our community’s views in connection to places and features –both built and natural – that are significant to Noosa’s unique story, character and identity from the coast to the mountains, with a view to identifying, protecting and conserving our rich history now and into the future.

Bringing community together is a great way to connect people with one another with the view of building resilience post the 2022 floods and to foster a sense of well-being and belonging. With this in mind, the Council has started a Noosa hinterland ‘Sip and Social’ event being held every Saturday in Cooroy from March to June at the Busstop Espresso: noosa.qld.gov.au/ events/event/619/sip-and-social-noosa-hinterland.

The event is certainly growing in popularity with over 160 people popping in for a free coffee and conversation since it started in the last weekend of February.

If I can provide any assistance please feel free to contact me: karen.finzel@ noosa.qld.gov.au. Karen

COUNCIL is cracking down on illegal camping, with Local Laws staff taking a zero-tolerance approach in response to growing community frustrations. Last year Council issued 212 fines for illegal camping and the issue accounted for about a third of the total complaints relating to local laws in Noosa.

Local Laws officers have already issued over 50 fines in the first two months this year. The crackdown is on travellers illegally camping, not on local people who may be sleeping rough in cars due to the housing crisis. Council officers are very sensitive to these issues; when staff come across people in genuine need they are trained to be able to support them to access services that can assist them.

Remember to nominate the special places, buildings and features you feel are important to the character, identity, and story of our shire. The aim of the project is to capture the places across the shire, from the

coast to the hinterland, that are important in telling the story of the Noosa region over time. The input provided will help Council recognise, celebrate, and conserve the special places and features we want to hold onto for future generations. It can be anything from a special place to a street, a unique building, or even a view.

The feedback received during the consultation, which runs until the end of March 2023, will help council to ensure Noosa’s heritage and character remain an integral part of our local identity and landscape. Visit Council’s Your Say Noosa website to take the survey, learn more about the review, or register for a community presentation or pop-up at locations across the shire – yoursay. noosa.qld.gov.au.

In exciting news for our hinterland residents, Pomona will be the site of Noosa Council’s first placemaking initiative. The trial continues our investment in the hinterland and our commitment to

supporting and enhancing the unique character and charm of Noosa’s diverse communities. A placebased approach to planning looks to build on a community’s unique connections to a place and the location’s values with a focus on creating vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive communities and public spaces.

It’s about putting people at the heart of council decisions. Crucial to the success of the trial is working closely with residents, businesses, and other stakeholders – the people who live, work and play in Pomona – to identify and enhance the town’s unique assets and attributes that create a sense of place, liveability, and social connections.

Finally, Cooroy, Black Mountain and Federal residents are invited to attend Sip and Social every Saturday at Busstop Espresso in Cooroy – 201 Mary River Road, Cooroy. The event aims to bring together members of our hinterland community who have been affected by the 2022 floods and it’s open to everyone. Every Saturday from 9 to 10 am.

Until next month, stay safe. Clare.

AUSTRALIA owes a great debt to our veterans who helped secure our freedom, and the Australian Government is releasing a new Certificate of Appreciation to honour their service and sacrifice.

Defence Force veterans who served overseas in Australia’s Defence Forces from the Second World War on, and those who served on the home front during the Second World War, are invited to apply for the certificate. Veterans who served overseas in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations, or those who provided logistics support in Vietnam, or served on the home front during World War II are eligible to receive the certificate under the guidelines set by the Australian Government.

The Certificates of Appreciation are designed primarily for living veterans, to express our nation’s gratitude and recognise their service. Application forms and further information regarding eligibility is available by contacting my office on 4121 2936, or llew. obrien.mp@aph.gov.au, or

Households and businesses in Cooroy will soon be able to connect full fibre to their premises as part of the National Broadband Network’s Fibre Upgrade Program.

Full fibre connection to the NBN network delivers a faster and more reliable internet experience for home and business users. Fibre to the premises (FTTP) connections will require an NBN network device to be installed inside your home. This device requires power to operate and can only be installed by an approved NBN installer or phone and internet provider.

To request a FTTP connection, customers at eligible premises will need to place an order with a retailer and connect to one of NBN’s three highest residential wholesale speed tiers.

You can check your address to see if it is eligible now, or register for updates, on the NBN website www.nbnco. com.au/residential/upgrades/ fttp-upgrade-with-higherspeed-tiers.

We have now seen 10 con-

secutive interest rate rises by the independent Reserve Bank of Australia. The banks need to pass on these rises to deposit holders as quickly as they move to raise interest rates on borrowers. These interest rate rises are biting and the cost of living keeps on going up, in spite of the government promising lower interest rates and lower living costs.

The cost of living will be made worse if the government’s proposal to impose a 10 per cent increase on fuel taxes and registration charges on truckies proceeds, costing the sector an additional $2.6 billion, which will be added onto the price of everything travelling on a truck so we’ll all end up paying more.

From 20 March 2023 there will be an increase to the Age Pension and Supplement of $37.50 per fortnight for singles and $28.20 per fortnight for each member of a couple. If you would like a copy of my Age Pension Guide, please contact my office on 4121 2936, or email llew.obrien. mp@aph.gov.au. Llew

Concert of hidden gems

PACIFIC Chamber Players have been presenting quality chamber music on the Sunshine Coast for the last 21 years and their first program for 2023 presents Hidden Gems of the chamber music repertoire.

Louis Spohr’s “Grand Nonetto” op 31 is an emerald, making use of each instrument’s particular idiosyncrasies to create a work of musical colour and originality. Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor KV 478 is a diamond, taking the listener on a journey from Sturm und Drang through a

lyrical Andante finishing with a happy Rondo. Thuille’s Sextet for Piano and Winds is the ruby, consisting of four movements: the first one opens with horn creating a sense of nobility, the second is sombre and dignified, the third a charming Gavotte, the fourth is full of high spirits and lovely melodies.

The concert will be presented at Cooroy Memorial Hall on Sunday 26 March. Retired ABC Producer Nancy Tow will precede it at 2:00 pm with an informative talk about the music.

Tickets are available online or cash at the door: $33 for adults, $30 concession and $10 for school students.

The program is framed by Mozart’s Haffner Symphony, a work composed by Mozart when Mozart was just 26 years of age and is

a testament to his genius. Felix Mendelssohn brings two talented clarinetists, Ruth Bonetti and Lee Bryant, together in a fabulous concerto-style piece in three short movements. Natalie holds oil painting classes in Pomona for groups of no more than three for $45 each and private lessons for $50 for two hours including the use of all paints and brushes.

“My students are from diverse backgrounds from not having lifted a brush, to wanting to try working with oils.”

LOCAL artist, Natalie Barlow is hosting art classes in Pomona.

The artist, whose paintings are currently exhibited in a group exhibition, More Than The Sum Of Its Parts at the Noosa Regional Gallery until April, works with oil. Natalie also exhibits her paintings at the Pomona Gallery.

Cooroy community supports permaculture pavilion

Benefit Fund grant plus two Noosa Council grants have provided the balance of the building cost.”

Construction has now started on building the cob walls of the building and Sandra said they anticipate the pavilion will be ready for use by the end of May.

“The pillars and roof are now in place and we have started on the cob building which will house a kitchen, office and storeroom.

“Come and be part of building the cob walls. It’s a lot of fun.”

Race banks on sponsors

help make a difference too.

“Each year, the majority of the Community Bank’s profits are poured back into the community.”

Trish said while they love supporting events such as the KOTM, they are encouraging the local community to bank locally to continue providing communities with ongoing support.

THE Permaculture Noosa Community Pavilion is almost finished.

And it is all thanks to the Cooroy community.

Permaculture Noosa vice president Sandra Guy said over 60 per cent of the funds for the pavilion came from generous local business support and Permaculture Noosa’s hard-working fundraising team.

“Bendigo Bank was the major sponsor donating $50,000. Other sponsors include Seasons IGA Cooroy, Alsahwa Eco Wellness Retreat Verridale, Countryside Realty Noosa, Cooroy RSL, Reece Plumbing Noosaville, Cooroy Landscapes, Bunnings Noosaville, Frame Tree Custom Framing Cooroy, and Cooroy Produce. “A Gambling Community

Sandra said the pavilion arose from a vision to provide an outdoor covered learning area that can be used by the whole community for gatherings, meetings, workshops, and just sitting and enjoying the serenity.

“None of this would have happened without a dedicated team fundraising and chasing donations and grants from a variety of sources.”

The next cob workshop dates are 25 and 26 March. For further information or to make a booking visit permaculturenoosa.com.au.

DON WALKER & BAND

EVERY year, for 44 years, the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club has hosted the iconic Pomona King of the Mountain (KOTM) event.

And for the 12th year, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank is the major race sponsor.

Cooroy Pomona Lions Club secretary and KOTM chairperson Heather Manders said the Lions Club’s 18 current members work tirelessly to fundraise throughout the year.

“Plus we support local schools and sporting clubs in our endeavours. Every dollar we make is donated back into the local community or to Lions Club projects.

Running the KOTM event takes thousands of hours of labour and much money.

“The passion and dedication of the seven KOTM team members are commendable as they work

behind the scenes to deliver a great day out. On the KOTM day, the team relies on local volunteers such as SES, Noosa Ultra & Trail Runners, schools, the local Bendigo Bank team, and the local community who step up and help on the day,” Heather said.

Community Bank chair Trish Radge said Noosa Council provides an event grant, and the KOTM team invites local businesses to offer sponsorship dollars to help host the event.

“We are proud to be once again supporting the event with a donation of $8,000 to fund the Bendigo Bank Mountain Challenge race technology.

“The Cooroy Community Bank has the vision to be a source of empowerment for the community. When you choose to bank with Bendigo Bank Cooroy, you

“Our Bendigo Bank Cooroy team are only too happy to help with any banking matters. To date, our local community banks have given over $2.3 m back to local clubs, infrastructure projects and community groups,” Trish said.

Heather said they love working with the Cooroy Bendigo Bank team.

“We have the same goals: to make our community a better place for all.”

Other KOTM sponsors for 2023 include Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland, Pomona True Value Hardware, Pomona IGA, Cooroy Rag, Cooroy RSL, Zinc 96.1, Venture Cycles, and LiveLife Pharmacy.

Op shop extension complete

COOROY’S Katie Rose op shop is now bigger and better.

The charity op shop on Emerald Street has finished a 48 m2 extension to its existing store to provide more space for storage, sorting and admin.

Katie Rose Cottage Hospice head of fundraising and partnerships Leigh McCready said the extension will free up the initial shop space for more products to sell.

COOROY Freemasons would like to thank everyone who participated in the raffle to raise money for SunnyKids.

Freemason Sam Law said it was amazing to see how much the community wanted to contribute to help the fight against domestic violence.

“Huge congratulations to Aidan Fleming for winning first prize, a $500 gift voucher for computers and phones at Harvey Norman Noosaville.

“Congratulations to Victoria for winning second prize, a $250 prepaid MasterCard; and congratulations to the third prize winner who has asked to remain anonymous. A massive thank you to Geoff at Harvey Norman Noosaville for donating the first prize, and another thank you to Matt at Cooroy Post Office for helping to donate the second prize.

“Also a huge shout-out to all who helped to sell tickets, including both Cooroy and Pomona Post Offices.”

Sam said the Freemasons pledged to match the total raised from the ticket sales to donate to SunnyKids.

“We raised $2,400 in total from ticket sales, so a total of $4,800 was donated to SunnyKids.

“Stay tuned for more raffles this year to support more of our local not-forprofit organisations.

“If you would like more information on Freemasonry and how to join, email us at cooroymasons@gmail. com.”

Harmony Day at PCH

POMONA & District Community House (PCH) will be celebrating inclusiveness and a sense of belonging with three free events on Harmony Day, Friday 24 March.

The day will start with a fun and interesting sharing of cultural knowledge/ story-telling workshop in the Lawson Shed from 9 to 11:30 am facilitated by local Albertina Banks, an Australian of Indonesian–Dutch ancestry.

A teacher of 30 years, Albertina and her family migrated in 1962 as political refugees from West Papua, Indonesia, not knowing a word of English nor having any clue about Australian culture, so she has firsthand knowledge of the enormous challenges faced

by new immigrant families in their resettlement and adjustment phase.

The workshop will include exploring interesting topics of cultural differences in relation to respect and courtesy, individualism and collectivism, and communication issues due to language barriers that can cause serious misunderstanding.

The workshop is appropriate for ages 10 years and up, and includes morning tea with an interesting range of snacks from different cultures.

The second event from 3 pm features well-known local master weaver Kilagi Nielson, an Australian of Papua New Guinea ancestry. She will teach some weaving techniques

as well as share her cultural knowledge.

This is a fun and exciting after-school activity for children and their parents/ grandparents/carers to share time together learning a new skill from another culture.

The third and final event is a community Harmony Day dinner.

This is a great opportunity to catch up with friends and/or make new friends. Local a cappella group LASCA will sing a repertoire of beautiful international songs prior to the community dinner.

To RSVP for any of the events, please contact Pomona Community House on 5485 2427 or email admin@ pomonacommunityhouse. com.au.

“We would like to thank our lovely customers for their ongoing support. Our fantastic volunteers are always happy to help you with anything you may need.”

Food waste issue topic of talk

can be done to reduce the amount of food going to landfill – thereby not only helping feed people in need but also helping save the planet.

FOOD waste – an enormous, worldwide environmental issue – is the topic of the Noosa Parks Association’s next Friday Forum. OzHarvest Sunshine Coast and Gympie founder and coordinator Michele Lipner will expand on the topics of food insecurity and food waste, providing an overview of the challenges and achievements on the Sunshine Coast and in Gympie over the last 8.5 years.

Since its foundation in 2014, this local OzHarvest program has diverted and redistributed over 800,000 kg of quality food – the equivalent of over 2.2 million meals – to community members in need.

Michele will also delve into the issue of food waste, including why so much food is wasted, where in the production/consumption cycle we waste the most food, the impact of food waste on the environment, and what

Michele spent almost 25 years in the international aid and development sector and brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to OzHarvest Sunshine Coast and Gympie. She was recently recognised for her efforts on behalf of OzHarvest by being awarded the 2023 Sunshine Coast (Council) Citizen of the Year. Discover the extent of the food waste issue and how to help at the Friday Forum on 24 March at the NPA Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville. The forum starts at 10:30 am and morning tea is available from 10 to 10:25 am. Entry is $5 by tap & go at the door, and includes morning tea/coffee.

A newly released, community-developed OzHarvest recipe book, SunnyCoast Eats will be available for $30 and for every book sold, a book is distributed to a recipient of OzHarvest food.

Snake noodle season Autumn gardening

son, because of all the baby snakes around.

“Over the next couple of months, snakes will be hatching and being born all over the place. This is no reason to panic though –this happens every year.

“Some important facts about baby snakes: the moment they are born (live birth or hatch) they are completely independent, they do not hang out in groups, and mum doesn’t hang around at all.

“The moment they come into this world they all take off and do their own thing; they are completely ready for their new lives.”

Luke said Cooroy and the Noosa hinterland are his favourite places to catch snakes.

“It’s so beautiful and everyone’s so nice. With the wetter weather we’ve been having, I did catch a beautiful big red belly from a chicken coop just recently at Lake Macdonald. Red bellies love water and the rain certainly brings them out.”

If you have a snake you need relocated or just want to ask questions or for advice, Luke and his team are available 24/7 and are locally based, always. Phone 0499 920 290.

WITH the cooler autumn climate here, getting out in the garden will certainly be much more enjoyable. It has been quite a warm and dry start to the year for Cooroy compared to the floods of 2022. A few storms have kept things green; however the dams and tanks could use a good top-up to see us through the generally dryer winter months ahead. There is still time, so fingers crossed. Right now, the soil is still warm enough for many plants to get a good start

before winter arrives, so preparing your garden beds now is a great idea. Removing all the summer crops that have given their produce, turning your soil and adding some compost is an inspiring way to get motivated to plant your next batch of goodies.

Some great things to plant now are broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Asian greens and strawberries. Micro greens such as spinach and rocket are also winners at this time of year.

Perhaps you would like to bring some beautiful colour

into your space. Flowering plants such as impatiens, cineraria, cornflower, pansy, poppy, viola, snapdragon and sweet pea will be sure to bring a smile. Edible flowers such as nasturtium and calendula/marigolds not only help brighten your veggie patch, they also help to discourage certain pests from attacking your crops, while encouraging helpful insects such as bees and ladybugs. We all know the importance of bees, but did you know that ladybugs love eating things like aphids and mites? Fun fact: ladybugs can eat up to 50 aphids in one day. Wow, they are a natural insect repellent. Happy gardening and whatever you plant, remember to water and mulch. Nurture your plants and, more importantly, your soil.

Swimmers celebrate third annual camp Rugby league clubs join forces for training session

THE Kandanga & District

Swimming Club recently held their third annual development camp at the Cotton Tree Caravan Park on the Sunshine Coast. The camp challenges and supports swimmers in new ways. Formal activities include beach games, a training session in the Cotton Tree’s 50-metre pool and a fun run to Alexandra Headland.

Kandanga & District Swimming Club secretary and coach Sam McDowall said the camp culminates in an ocean swim from Mooloolaba Spit to Mooloolaba Main Beach.

“Many challenges are

overcome when the swimmers and a group of parents jump into the ocean to swim in the open water, and it was wonderful to see everyone from ages 6 to 60 swimming their way to shore.”

Sam said this great experience was provided through grants from Cooroy Rag and RACQ Gympie plus regular meat tray raffles hosted by the Kandanga Hotel.

“We also acknowledge our club families, who volunteer their free time to support their kids.

“We are so grateful to have received a grant from the Cooroy Rag for $500 to help subsidise this important part

of our club’s season. We had 62 people attend the camp which is a great opportunity for our swimmers and their families to gather together to participate in a range of activities that aren’t available in Kandanga.

“Our awesome club has become a great starting point for many friendships and is quite a social hub in our small community.

“New members are always welcome, and as the end of the club’s 43rd season approaches, we look forward to many more years of fitness and fun.”

For more information contact 0468 494 029.

THREE junior rugby league clubs have come together for a training session with the NRL Dolphins. Under-13 players from the Noosa Pirates Rugby League Club, Coolum Colts and Nambour Junior Rugby League Club joined forces at Pirate Park on Sunday 4 March.

Noosa Pirates club president Liam Anlezark said there was a great turnout for the skill session.

“The event featured four sessions: skills rotation, referee talk about rule changes

from U12s to U13s, finishing with the three clubs having some game time.

“We’d like to say a special thank you to out-going president Paul Dwyer for helping coordinate this special event and a huge thank you to Shane Morris, NRL Dolphins Game Development officer, and Beau Condon, NRL Game Development officer, and legendary player Sam Tagatese for facilitating the session.”

Liam said it was great working with Shane Morris on this project.

“Thank you to everyone who came down to the club.

“Having the NRL Dolphins down at Pirate Park was a huge privilege for the club and a great synergy for our junior development program. We wish them all the best for their inaugural season.

“Thanks also to all Coolum and Nambour players and families for coming to Pirate Park, and of course a big thank you to all our volunteers who helped make this event such a success.”

Super fish smashes swim challenge The year of the Demons

THERE are exciting times ahead for the Pomona Demons.

The long-standing AFL club is gearing up for another big season and some big changes.

Pomona Demons president Matt Conquest said they have several comps coming up as well as grand plans on the drawing board.

“The hinterland’s inaugural Summer Nine Aside AFL competition, including business teams, friends, mums,

dads, sons, and daughters, will be heaps of fun.

“We also have the senior men’s and women’s teams in 2024 competition.

“Also this year, we are upgrading and extending the clubhouse with the very cool concept for a social club/hub in the heart of the hinterland,” Matt said.

Junior and youth teams have now started back in pre-season training.

“The youth teams are loving their weekly fitness

sessions at Impact Boxing and Fitness Centre. We’ll have some fit kids out there.

“It’s exciting to see the talent develop amongst our U9, U11, U13 and U15G age groups. It’s shaping up to be a really amazing year for the Demons.

“If you have kids aged 7–15 interested in footy (AFL), come down to the club on a Thursday afternoon from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. We would love to see you.”

COOROY’S super fish has completed his Starlight Foundation challenge.

Swimmer Clinton Stanley vowed to swim 60 km and raise much-needed funds – $5465 – for the Starlight Foundation.

Clinton said he surpassed

his goal with the help of his friends from the Sunshine Coast community.

“With you supporting me I swam 70 km and raised $7,000.

“You have brought happiness to sick kids and their families and I truly thank

you for your kindness.

“I am the lucky one – even though I have an intellectual disability, I am fit and healthy and live my dream, while every day, a sick child is admitted to hospital in Australia,” Clinton said.

WALKING into this grand colonial Queenslander is like stepping into a bit of Australian history. The high ceilings, original VJ walls, French doors, ornate fretwork, glass detailing, and of course the polished timber floors make it a special home to be in. The air-conditioned,

open-plan living areas are substantial in size. The well-placed windows allow an abundance of natural light and airflow as well as magnificent views over the hinterland towards the backdrop of Mt Cooroy.

The well-appointed kitchen is both functional and spacious with ample cupboards, a large gas oven and cooktop, a dishwasher, and a double stainless sink. A wood-burning fireplace is set next to the kitchen, offering warmth throughout the home during the cooler months.

The three generous-sized bedrooms, with ceiling fans, are accessed through French doors. There is a modern ensuite, and the large walk-in robe offers

great storage. The main bathroom is more traditional in style and features a clawfoot bath and classic finishes. Relax on the verandah on three sides and soak up the peaceful and quiet ambience overlooking nothing but acreage properties with livestock and views for miles. Stairs from the verandah lead under the house to where car parking space is available. Storage is plentiful and the laundry is easily accessible. Water to the home is provided from approximately 5,000 gallons of rainwater. A 5 kW solar system offsets your power usage and a large electric hot water system ensures long hot showers.

An impressive inground saltwater pool creates a stunning feature in front of the Queenslander, shaded by large trees and bordered by a well-manicured lawn. There is an established mango orchard, picturesque poincianas, jacarandas and a 400-year-old majestic fig tree.

There is a designated chook run, a 9 x 7 m shed which has power, and approximately 5,000 gallons of rainwater.

All this set on 1.84 acres only minutes from Cooroy with uninterrupted views to Cooroy Mountain.
