Bed 4; Bath 2; Car 2 Forthcoming Auction Perched beside a freshwater lake in the Cooroy hinterland, this unique four-bedroom property offers peaceful, low impact living. Originally designed with energy efficiency in mind, the steel framed home combines solar passive design with low energy lighting and energy and water efficient fittings. Solar is installed with an inverter to feed power back into the grid. The energy efficient features compliment the design elements, with high, vaulted ceilings and full-length glass windows and sliding doors overlooking the water. Sit on one of the multiple outdoor decks to catch the easterly breezes off the water, while protecting yourself from the western sun which is shaded by extensive landscaping and the natural hillside. The home is constructed with at-level access from the double garage, through to the spacious living and kitchen space. The space flows naturally, opening up to the magnificent water outlooks which dominate the home. Four large bedrooms are privately positioned on a splitlevel arrangement, with the main bedroom located separately with its own private deck access and courtyard off the ensuite. The sprawling timber decks are nestled among established grass trees and low maintenance natives which attract a myriad of bird life. The privacy and space of this property is unrivalled, and the outlook is truly unique and magical. Quality floating timber floors run through the living area which features a central kitchen with quality appliances including a five-burner gas stove. The home’s cladding was selected for its sound and heat insulating properties to support the in-house comfort and eco properties. It is also fire retardant. There is room to move on this property which includes your own lakeside parklands, yet you are just five minutes from the centre of Cooroy and 20 minutes to Noosa’s famous beaches. This property offers comfortable living with low impact lifestyle options. Make sure you inspect it today. Contact Jim Ennis at Fiona Winter Realty on 0402 587 298.

More than 2,000 shoe boxes arrive in time for Christmas

Rotary Members Tess Alexandroff, Carol Johnston and Stan Quin with Adam Garvey (Cooroy SS), and Darryl Edmonds (Bendigo)

Christmas has arrived early in East Timor. Educational care parcels in the form of the 2,000 shoe boxes collected from Cooroy, Tewantin, Coolum and Pacific Paradise State Schools left in June and made it through storms and a school-term break to arrive in Timor. Thanks to a collective and determined community effort, the educational parcels were distributed at Sao Miguel (St. Michael) at Raikotu. It’s a school about 30 minutes west of Dili and thousands of students were waiting eagerly to receive one. The school officially has 150 kindergarten students, 250 of primary age and some 200 junior high school kids, but the surrounding area

of need stretches to include hundreds more. With the help of the Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank in Cooroy, Pomona, Tewantin and Marcoola the Rotary Clubs of Cooroy and Noosa, the school was identified as a community school with no help from the ministry of education in Timor. Each parcel took the form of a decorated shoe box with enclosed items including exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils, all topped off with a personal item from each student from the three state schools to the child opening it at the other end. The Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank and the Rotary

Club of Noosa share the shipment costs because both organisations continue to see an opportunity to support a cause that would instil a sense of responsibility into each student who compiled these special gifts. Cooroy State School’s, Adam Garvey said learning of the arrival of the shoe boxes brought an emotional reaction from the students. For the hundreds of students who got involved at the school, the spirit of the project really hit home as they prepared to watch the video of the shoe boxes arriving. “The students and our school all have a real connection to this project. They had a ball putting the care parcels

together in June. It’s great to see the collective efforts of the kids, their families and the teams at Bendigo Bank and Rotary put those shoe boxes into the hands of the kids who need them most,’’ Mr. Garvey said. “It’s also wonderful to see their thoughtfulness come full circle and we’re proud to have been part of it all again this year. Every shoe box was personally decorated and had educational items to further the education of a child less fortunate than themselves. Each student also enclosed something small of theirs such as a soft toy or tennis ball. It added something simple but personal to each box,” he

added. Darryl Edmonds is the Customer Relationship manager from Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches. He feels the project continues to build on something special. “Our Community Banks are all about giving back and in this case the community recipients are international ones. This project is about community partnership and feels as relevant now as when we started in 2008. We’re delighted to continue our collaboration with Rotary and we’re looking forward to watching some of the kids recognise their shoe box in the video. We all love this project and look forward to doing it all again in 2019,” he said.

Merry Christmas everyone - what a year! Sandy Bolton MP

EUMUNDI CATTLE SALE Please give David a call to discuss the current market or for any of your livestock requirements To receive our updates and reports via email, please reply with “ADD” to our email address below.

Even though much of Cooroy is not officially in the Noosa electorate, as you know my heart is there from long history. With fellow MP Marty’s blessing, I cross the ‘border’ to continue attending events and advocating with him on your behalf and it is wonderful that we can do that – a case of double trouble? For those on the ‘Noosa’ electorate side of town, our annual ‘Connect’ and December edition of the newsletter will be coming to you via the letterbox before end of year so please be on the lookout. Copies are also available at our office and you can receive an email version through the ‘subscribe’ at www.sandybolton.com. I will not rehash what is in there, however there is a handy contacts list and summary on where we are with the ‘hitlist’, as well the Noosa Survey which assists in prioritising our efforts in 2019.

Over the year it has been wonderful to catch up with everyone at events, and swapping ‘MC’ duty at Christmas in Cooroy to ‘judging’ was great fun, especially initiating MP Marty and Mayor Tony into the street parade! The mobile office out front of the Memorial Hall was a great opportunity to discuss the proposed intersection solutions by TMR, and correct some incorrect assumptions on this. With the consultation close date pushed out to February 18, and a town meeting scheduled the first week of February, the opportunity for Cooroy to discuss both short and long term vision and solutions to address these historical safety concerns is here. The consultation regarding the Lake MacDonald upgrade has closed and a draft Impact Assessment Report will come back out for comment next year. Seqwater has been available to residents to discuss concerns including the truck routes, and are available on 1800 902 294, otherwise we will be updating through

Noosa360 as news come through. A reminder that we have a number of MP funded initiatives on the go, and would be appreciate your feedback on any that we undertake, along with any ideas you would like to see implemented. In 2018 these focused on at risk and unemployed youth, as well looking at ‘outside the box’ solutions to historical issues. To finish, 2018 has been an exciting and successful year for our electorate from multiple aspects, and I thank everyone who make our communities so very special through their volunteerism and hard work in so many arenas, and who inspire and motivate others through their ongoing efforts and passions to create the most beautiful, caring and connected place to live anywhere. How lucky are we? As the Electorate Office will be closed from 3pm Friday 21st December until 9am Monday 7th January, if you have any emergency or crisis issues please call 000, Lifeline on

13 11 14, refer to our handy contacts list in the mail out, or refer to the State Government’s Oneplace Community Services Directory on www.oneplace.org.au.

Warmest regards to everyone for a happy, safe and healthy Christmas and New Year, and I look forward to seeing you out and about with my ‘grandies’!! Sandy

Local heroes fund Local Heroes Portrait Prize Cooroy’s answer to the Archibald Prize, the inaugural Local Heroes Portrait Prize went off without a hitch at the Butter Factory, last month, thanks to the generosity of sponsors. A homage to the spirit of community in Cooroy and beyond, the exhibition featured portraits of ‘local heroes’ as

Fiona Winter Realty’s Jim Ennis (L) and People’s Choice prizewinner, Lew Brennan at BFAC.

painted Sunshine Coast artists. Local men, Tex Pipke and Jim Ennis donated cash prizes for the winning work, as judged by Dr. Jandamarra Cadd, and People’s Choice, respectively. Pipke’s $500 first prize went to figurative painter Don Milner while Cooroy’s Lew Brennan won over the crowds for Jim Ennis’ People’s Choice prize of $250. BFAC co-ordinator said the community spirit of Cooroy continues to inspire her.

“This was such a beautiful exhibition to really celebrate the people that more often than not, work behind the scenes of a community to help if flourish. “We couldn’t have attracted the high calibre of entries or audience numbers if it weren’t for the generosity of Tex Pipke and Jim Ennis thank you gentlemen!”. Local Heroes Portrait Prize will return to BFAC in 2019. Keep an eye out for announcements in the new year.

Botanic Gardens plant sale success If attendance and sales at the Summer Plant Sale held at Noosa Botanic Gardens this month is anything to go by, there was a lot of gardening happening in the Noosa Shire on the weekend! “People starting arriving before 9am and the stream never stopped until we closed at lunchtime” said Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends President, Jill Brownlee. “And the result was that we raised almost $5000 to support Noosa Botanic Gardens’ activities”, added Treasurer Fiona Martyn. Propagating Team Leader, David Lee, was delighted with this outcome from his team’s efforts. “We love these Gardens” said David who travels each week with his wife from Buderim to do this voluntary work. “The Noosa Botanic Gardens are unique with

their beautiful setting on Lake Macdonald, the amazing amphitheatre with its lake backdrop, and all the interesting botanic ‘rooms’ with the rainforest, Monet lily pond, and the plant species from across the world”. “There is much on the horizon proposed for 2019” said President Jill “but we can only achieve positioning Noosa Botanic Gardens as a botanic garden of excellence with the involvement of members – whether it is getting ‘down and dirty’ with the Thursdays gardening team or developing and utilizing skills in the propagation shed or creating and facilitating special events for public enjoyment.” If you think you’d like to utilize your current skills and experience or develop new ones through membership of the Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends, give Jill a call on 0412 053281 or email: jill@creativedialogue.com

Let’s not throw away Christmas The Plastic Free Noosa team are urging Noosa Shire residents to reduce their plastic packaging as much as they can this Christmas. ‘95% of all plastic packaging is used once and then thrown away as waste or litter.’ said Chad Buxton, coordinator of Plastic Free Noosa, ‘and Christmas is a time when our use of plastic packaging skyrockets. We are urging everyone to consider buying presents for friends and family that reduce litter and change wasteful habits’. Top of the list includes: • Reusable water bottles and coffee cups • A reusable bag (such as a Boomerang Bag) • Reusable straw sets • Reusable picnic kits • Beeswax food wraps and coverings ‘You can find many of these items at local markets or at a number of Plastic Free Noosa member local busineses, which are listed on our website’ said Chad. Wrap these gifts in newspaper, fabric or reuse old gift paper, wrapping in twine. When entertaining, consider using your own cutlery and cups, and don’t use plastic straws or stirrers - do you really need them? It’s also a great time of year to dine out. ‘One super easy thing you can do is choose to dine at a Noosa café or restaurant that is certified as a Plastic Free Champion through us. Choose to support them and let them know you appreciate their commitment! said Chad. To find a Plastic Free Champion, or to learn more, head to www.plasticfreenoosa.org

Christmas budgeting Simone Flavelle, Senior Branch Manager, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank How are your Christmas preparations going? It’s the busiest and often happiest time of our year, but also one of the most expensive. Presents, work drinks, family functions and school holidays can also keep us feeling a little broke. To financially survive the Festive Season, try following these tips: • Stick to your budget. Write a list including anticipated costs and then try to live by it. • Try to save in advance. As I mentioned in my column last edition, if you saved $20 a week for a year you would have over $1,000. At our Bendigo Bank branches in Cooroy, Pomona, we offer Christmas Club accounts to assist with savings for December. • Start your shopping early. This can effectively spread the financial commitment over many weekly pays or pensions.

This way it won’t feel too cumbersome all at once. • Try not to put everything on the credit card. This debt will only be there to pay later. Credit cards are great but they can easily get out of control. • Secret Santa or a Kris Kringle present giving can greatly reduce your cost. Everyone still gets a present and it does not cost as much. • At parties and BBQ’s don’t cater for 50 people when only 20 are coming. In addition share the work load and cost but getting everyone to pitch in. Christmas and the holidays is usually a great time for everyone. Many have at least a few days off work to spend with family and friends. If you’re lucky enough to be one of them, enjoy your well-earned break. So, on behalf of all

our team here I wish you and all your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. I’ll be back in 2019 with more columns. If you want to have a chat about any banking matter, feel free to contact me or any of our team on 5447 7131 (Cooroy), 5485 1786 (Pomona) or you can also email me at simone.flavelle@bendigo adelaide.com.au. Winners all round at Christmas in Cooroy!

Winner Wayne Pendergast with Dave Manktelow from Mower & ATV There is no argument that everyone who attended Christmas in Cooroy was a winner. Thousands of people partook in the cornucopia of free Christmas activities and enjoyed perfect weather and the amazing community spirit that Cooroy is famous for. One very excited winner was Wayne Pendergast who had the winning ticket in the raffle for the Toro mower. He was very excited to pick it up last week from Dave Manktelow at Mower & ATV. A joyful Christmas twist is that Wayne works at Studio Steel and helped to install the beautiful Cooroy Christmas tree which was

switched on by Haylea Rose who is celebrating 5 years cancer free this year and is a big fan of Christmas in Cooroy. The Leukaemia Foundation were winners too with over $700 raised via the Bentleys Great Santa Stroll. It was a sight to see with about 30 Santa suit clad walkers cruising up the main street of Cooroy. Spectators lined the street for the ever-popular Bendigo Bank Street Parade and the floats were of a spectacular standard again. Thirty businesses and community groups participated and the “Past,

Present, Future” theme was a big hit with young and old alike. Wythes Real Estate took out the Best Float award with their 70s Flower Power inspired float but it was a close call with another year of tough competition according to judges Sandy Bolton, Marty Hunt and Tony Wellington. The Shed at Cooroy East Side Traders team kept the title of best tuggers in the East versus West Tug of War! The Cooroy Computers team of West Side Traders gave a valiant effort but are back to training for another year. The free activities kept

people entertained all evening with the free rides sponsored by Cooroy Rag & Madills Motor Group, a foam party sponsored by Cooroy Legal Centre, the SPV Accounting sponsored face painting, the Cooroy Fish & Chips Santa Sack Races, a visit from Santa sponsored by Gelignite Jacks, the fantastic entertainment program sponsored by Cooroy Supa IGA, free popcorn from the Leather Doctor and of course the spectacular fireworks display sponsored by Cooroy RSL. If you missed out on this winning event, there is still time for you to win with the Cooroy Family Practice Shop Window Trail. Just by voting for your favourite window before 21 December, you can win a $100 Cooroy Supa IGA Voucher. Entry forms are available in shops and at Cooroy IGA. Neville Richard Richardson 5/9/32 – 28/10/18

Nev came into this world somewhat differently than most of us. He wasn’t born in a hospital, he was born in a slab hut on the banks of Cootharaba Lake on the 5th day of September 1932. He was the fourth child of Archie and Annie Richardson. Nev lived at Cootharaba until he was 12 years old attending Cootharaba School until it closed. When he was 9, he and his sister Myra milked cows on a farm at Kin Kin Creek. After the school closed their lessons were done by correspondence which he used

to love, because Myra would do his school work while he and his brother Bill were out in the scrub shooting birds with their shanghaies. A much smarter option, or so he thought. When Nev was 12 he and the family moved to the current farm at West Cooroy, there Nev had to go back to school. Well what a shock that was for him. He went to being top of his class at Cootharaba because of Myra doing his work, to knowing very little at West Cooroy. Nev never liked school and

would prefer to get the cane rather than do his homework. One day when the homework was being marked, the teacher asked Nev to stand beside him so that way he wasn’t wearing out the floor walking back and forth to get the cane. When he turned 14, the teacher asked Archie (Nev’s father) to come up to the school. He told him it would be a very good idea if Nev left school. It was then Nev started working on the farm full time. In the 1950s Nev got a job cutting cane with his brother Bill and later field working in the cane. After this Nev and Bill got a contract with Jimmy Bell cutting cordwood for Cooroy Butter Factory, a job he and Bill absolutely loved. Nev said Jim was the best bloke he’d ever worked for and he’d help them out whenever he could. Bill became ill and kept getting severe chest pain so they decided to give cutting cordwood away. It was at this time they went driving trucks, Bill for Peter Andreassen and Nev for his brother in-law in Gympie. In 958 Nev’s brother, who was also his

best mate died in a truck accident just west of Gympie. This is when Nev returned home to the farm. In 1960 Nev and his future wife Gloria bought a house from Frank Sauer in Gympie and with the help of his father they dismantled it and rebuilt it on the farm at West Cooroy. Here was where Nev spent the rest of his life. In 1962 Nev married the love of his life Gloria Williams. Their first son Kevin was born in 1963 followed by another son Max in 1967. He continued to work on the farm until early 1970s when he took on a second job as a builder’s labourer for Col Koch and then Norcon Constructions. Christmas 1978 Nev had had enough of working away from the farm, because he had to get up at 2.30am to do the morning milking to get to work on time. When he finished he turned the farm from cream to bulk milk. Nev loved milking his cows for which he received numerous milk quality awards. In 1982 Max left school to grow beans and other small crops. Nev helped to pick these, which he con-

tinued to do when Kevin also came back to the farm. He kept this up until Gloria passed away in 1997. Kevin then took over Gloria’s share of the dairy farm. In 2001 after the deregulation Nev said he’d milked cows since he was 9 years old and he wasn’t going to do it for nothing so he shut the dairy down. But he still kept milking his house cow or two, supplying the district in milk. Just because he stopped dairying didn’t mean he retired, he was straight back into helping Max and Barbara. His granddaughter Tomika was also born in 2001, adding a lot of love to his life. Nev continued to pick beans, peas, squash, zucchini and egg plant. He also helped muster and work on the beef cattle with the boys. In 2015 he decided he just couldn’t help pick anymore because of the hills hurting his knees. He continued to help with the cattle up until six months ago when he finally retired for good, so he could sit on his back verandah looking out over the farm he loved so much. Nev will be greatly missed by many.

Trish and Laura from the Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade with Charlie Cobb and Tina Price=Wilson

L – R: Simon Hanicek, Peter Althaus, Major Warren Parkinson and Charlie Cobb

Some festive joy and relief was provided by members of the Cooroora Woodworkers for the less fortunate and often forgotten families existing in our society today, particularly the children. Charlie Cobb and his merry band of toymakers have been making sweat and sawdust in their annual project of providing some 300 wooden toys to put beaming smiles on the faces of those kids in need. Last Saturday, Trish and Laura from the Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade – a part of the

Magic Moments Foundation - a national not for profit organization formed to create a coalition of caring volunteers who commit to provide outreach for those forgotten by society – as well as Major Warren Parkinson from the Salvation Army were on hand to receive the donated toys. Charlie Cobb and all the other toymakers of the Cooroora Woodworkers hopes their efforts spread Christmas cheer to the disadvantraged families of the Sunshine Coast.

People with purpose in our community Scouts honoured to have these leaders Perhaps not surprisingly, in today’s age of iPads and YouTube, parents love sending their kids to Scouts. It’s all about getting them away from those screens and into the great outdoors. The good news is that Scouts today is also extremely popular with the kids, as is the case with the Cooroy Scout Group which actually has a waiting list for some levels. One Cooroy dad said that his son had gone to his first scout meeting with some fear and trepidation (mainly because he didn’t know anyone) but, after spending the evening building a fire, cooking sausages, and making new friends, he has not looked back and now absolutely loves it. A visit to the Cooroy Scout Hall on an early Thursday evening confirms this – all the kids, including the younger Cub Scout group (aged 8 to 10.5 years) and the Scout group (10.5 to 14.5 years) are clearly having a lot of fun and learning some practical skills as well. “It’s not school and it’s not home – it’s a place where kids learn by doing,” says the Cub Scout

Leader, Kristy Worrall, who has been a volunteer leader for more than six years. “They are learning and benefiting in so many ways and they don’t even realise it because they are having so much fun.” Scout Leader, Wendy Duffy, agrees, adding that “scouting helps to nurture self-confidence, as well as responsibility and leadership because as they progress they teach and assist those following up behind them.” Not only are there the weekly meetings but also regular weekend camps and other outdoor activities including hiking, abseiling and mountain-biking. Of course, all of this adds up to a lot of hours for the volunteer leaders including all the time spent shopping and preparing for the camps. When you consider that Wendy works as a nurse and Kristy runs her own business, the volunteer-manhours they manage to fit in for Scouts is really quite amazing. Both Wendy and Kristy got involved when their own children joined the group. Neither had planned to take this route

Cooroy upgrade but when leadership positions fell vacant and the future of the group was threatened, they decided to step up. Wendy says she could see how much her own children were benefiting from Scouts and the thought of losing it all due to a lack of leadership was too horrible to contemplate. Like Kristy, she did the necessary training (now all available online) and has been the Scout leader ever since. Wendy, Kristy and the other volunteer leaders are doing a tremendous job but they need support. For the group to survive going forward, more volunteer leaders are needed. Yes, some commitment is required but Wendy and Kristy will be the first to tell you how rewarding this work is – not just for the children and also for the leaders. The smiling faces and happy voices at the Cooroy Scout Hall is all testament to this. The community should be proud. Ian Pugh

Lights will increase traffic grid, roundabouts decrease it. This is not about costs but solving traffic flow – accessing emergency vehicles. Traffic flow cannot be achieved without doubling the width of the road (rail) overpass. Then in succession relocating the urban brigade (half acre next to the rurals if necessary, on a 99 year forestry lease), 5 houses on the east of Myall and entrance to the golf course a further 300 metres south. Most of this can be constructed not affecting present traffic. $22m for the overpass, less than $50m for the completed project. Cooroy deserves a proper solution, not a cheap bandaid affect which will further congest with increased population (and as a gateway to Noosa). Noosa council does not help – they buckle at the knees with the slightest pressure from Main Roads and admit it’s all about the cheapest option. Cooroy, don’t be blackmailed by superficial dictators, reject Main Roads’ proposal. If you are given a job, you do it properly – the first time. Even if it has to be done in stages. Cooran State School Musical – Creepy Town Cooran State School performed their annual musical last month to a delighted crowd of parents, grandparents, fellow students and local community members. Each year Mrs Deby D’Onofrio produces, choreographs and directs the school musical to an exceptional standard, and this year was no different. The audience was taken on a scary and often humorous journey through the eyes of a very vegetarian vampire Lucy. The very vegetarian vampire Lucy just did not fit in with her fellow vampire, zombies and werewolves; she just didn’t like to eat meat! Her parents were at their wits end. Then on day Lucy met a HUMAN and

her life changed. They became friends and planned of ways to leave their so called allotted lives. The musical was not just for the budding young actors of Cooran SS. Those who were more inclined to stay in the background helped with set design and the making of the sets, advertising & promotion, ticket production and working as back stage crew. The annual musical takes an extreme amount of effort for all who are involved, but in the end the result is amazing with students, parents and teachers all being treated to a fantastic night of entertainment and fun!

along with their parents. After the presentation one of the parents thanked us saying that the school was a lovely school and now she was confident that her child starting next year would also have the ability to explore digital learning. Digital learning forms a part of the whole curriculum these days and is essential to assist in skilling the future workers into jobs that do not exist today. It was a really “feel good” moment, being able to assist the children in our local community.

Explorations - Discovering new landscapes Gympie region artist Nicole Harper invites you to discover your own landscape in a new exhibition opening at Pomona Railway Gallery in the Carriage Room on Saturday 5 January 2019. Titled ‘Explorations’, the new body of work focuses on interpreting the places we find ourselves everyday. The aim of the artist is not to provide an

accurate portrayal of the locations we visit but rather to invoke the feelings and responses you had while there. “I have always been drawn to the everyday scene and the beauty that is often overlooked,” Nicole says. “It sounds like a cliché however I hope everyone has had one of these moments.” Nicole grew up surrounded by art and

with a mother who is a successful artist in her own right. After dabbling in school, she didn’t pick up a paintbrush again until finding herself living on a remote cattle station as a wife and mother to three children. She found painting gave her a way of appreciating the landscape she found herself in and also gave her an identity that was separate from the roles she played as wife, mother, school teacher, cook and other duties required of the boss’s wife. “It wasn’t the grandiose that caught my eye to paint, it was always a simple thing like a row of trees or an open plain. It is also the hardest thing to take something so simple and share it with others.” After establishing herself as an artist in western Queensland and exhibiting throughout the state, Nicole moved with her family to the Gympie region in 2014. Art has seen other priorities take its place since then

however this will be her third solo exhibition since moving to the region, after exhibiting in Gympie Regional Gallery and at The Butter Factory Arts Centre in Cooroy. ‘Explorations’ opens at 10:30am on Saturday 5 January at Pomona Railway Gallery and will be on display until 6 February 2019. The live music kicks off in the Imperial Beer Garden from 5pm with BENNY O and his acoustic magic. The Brewery (ticketed gig) will be pumping from 7.30pm (doors open 7pm) with Band of Frequencies getting the vibe just right. One of Australia’s premier jam bands and true believers in sounds beyond boundaries, Band of Frequencies draw their influences from a vast spectrum of blues, roots, rock, funk and psychedelic styles. Their signature blend comes from years of live experimentation, constantly pushing their influences into the creative fires to see what melts, what explodes and what merges. They’ll then hand over the stage to the one and only OKA. Embracing the future without losing sight of the past, OKA draw upon their indigenous connection to place and country to create their signature feel-good Australian earth sound - an irresistible blend of influences spanning house, big beat, reggae-dub, roots, jazz and world music. A mash-up of dance and downtempo electro beats marinated in the mys-

tical spirit of the Dreamtime. At the creative heart of the music is Stu Boga Fergie (aka DidgeriSTU) who connects you to earth with the deep subsonic pulse and resonance of his Yidaki (didgeridoo). He is the big man behind the electronic beats, keys and vocals inspired by his aboriginal heritage. news Some important information about low back pain

COOROY RAG

Low back pain (LBP) is thought to affect up to 60 to 80% of the Western population throughout the course of their life. Many people do not have any preceding events to cause this back pain, although specific injuries can also initiate their symptoms. Lower back pain constitutes almost half of all chronic pain. This has a huge effect on quality of life and people with LBP tend to have more time off work and higher of medical costs than those who do not have symptoms. Sedentary lifestyles, increased body weight, reduced physical activity and sustained poor postures are all contributing factors to LBP. Obesity rates in the western world have never been higher, and this is known to cause greater rates of musculoskeletal pain than ever before. Back pain can strike suddenly or build up slowly over a period of time. Many people report sudden and severe onset of back pain from a seemingly innocent movement. Others find that their back aches towards the end of the workday and follows a regular pattern. Thankfully, more and more workplaces are advocating for better ergonomic set-ups in order to pre-emptively reduce the incidence of LBP amongst employees. Dealing with back pain is complicated as there are many treatments to choose from. Unfortunately, there is rarely a miracle cure that works for everyone. What research tells us is that effective and timely advice, thorough professional assessment and a tailored exercise program shows the best outcomes in the long term. There are some cases where your physiotherapist or doctor will suggest that you have imaging such as an x-ray or MRI. While imaging can be helpful in ruling out serious

injuries it is important to realise that if everyone was to have an MRI of their spine, it is reasonable to expect that most people would have changes in the appearance of their spines, even if they don’t have any pain or other symptoms. The take-home message is that scans do not always paint an accurate picture of what is happening within a person’s back. The back is made up of a number of different structures that work together to achieve the required movements needed to perform daily activities. With such a complex combination of tissues and joints, aches and pains can be caused by any number of structures. Keeping the muscles and joints of the spine strong and healthy can have a remarkable impact on pain levels regardless of the specific structure causing symptoms. If you are suffering from back pain, speak to your physiotherapist for advice on how to best manage your symptoms. While no one can prevent back pain with 100% certainty, keeping active, avoiding smoking and maintaining a healthy relationship with alcohol and heavy labour, can reduce your chances of having low back pain. Remember, this is general advice and you should always see a medical professional for advice on your individual condition. Hinteractive Physio has a choice of male and female experience physiotherapists who can assess your low back pain and provide an individualized management and prevention plan. They also offer Pilates and strengthening classes with their physiotherapists so that you can be confident in the exercise you are performing. You can contact them on 5442 5556 or visit www.hinteractivephysio.com.au

This ensures no bleeding or pain. DermaFrac improves the appearance of: Fine lines and wrinkles, Aging skin, UV damage, Sun damage and pigmentation, Enlarged pores, Skin’s strength, Oily congested skin, Dry & Dehydrated skin.

There are four different serums available for DermaFrac treatments: Hydrate – This serum uses Hyaluronic acid with a patented technology called Hylasponge to form a fully hydrated layer that helps guarantee that hydration is delivered into deeper layers of skin. It also delivers intense hydration to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Clarify – The clarify solution features two key active ingredients. Salicylic acid opens clogged pores and neutralizes bacteria

within the pores. It reduces pore congestion and breakouts on skin. Lactic acid, part of the alpha hydroxy acid family, exfoliates the outer layer of skin and increases collagen production to minimise fine lines and wrinkles and reduce blackheads and whiteheads. Rejuvenate – This serum has five active ingredients that stimulate fibroblast and collagen production in the skin. They also help relax muscles to prevent wrinkling from repeated muscle movement. Lighten – This serum uti-

lises Kojic acid to lighten skin by suppressing melanocyte activity and pigmentation. It also has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. “At Lakeridge Health, Beauty & Skin Care we ensure each client new to our clinic has a thorough consultation in which the Skin Therapist will ascertain which products and treatments are best suited to your skin or your skin concerns,” clinic manager, Lisa Lister. Before you flush your contact lenses consider this If you have ever flushed your used contact lenses down the sink and thrown their blister packs in the bin, you are not alone. Although out of sight, these products don’t simply disappear into thin air. Every year, in Australia alone, an estimated 115 million used contact lenses and blister packs are sent to landfills and around 15 to 20 percent of wearers are flushing the lenses down the sink. Worryingly when the lenses make their way into a wastewater treatment facility, they don’t biodegrade easily and may break up into pieces and make their way into surface water. Once there, they can cause environmental damage and contribute to the growing problem of microplastic pollution. As contacts are denser than water, they sink, and this could ultimately pose a threat to aquatic life, especially bottom feeders that may ingest the contacts. While contact lenses are far from the largest source of microplastic pollution in water, they appear to be a readily avoidable one. The blister packs are also too small to effectively recycle in traditional recycling systems, in-

stead going to landfill and contributing to non-biodegradable waste. Once received at Terracycle the contact lens waste is separated by composition and cleaned. The metal layers of the blister packs are recycled separately, while the contact lenses and plastic components of the blister packs are melted into plastic that can be remolded to make recycled products. In addition, for every kilogram of used contact lenses and blister packs collects through the program, $1 will be donated to Optometry Giving Sight, a charity dedicated to help prevent blindness around the world. Local optometrists, optometry@cooroy, are participating in the Terracycle contact lens recycling program and are happy to take collection of any brand of contact lenses and blister packs that are brought to their Cooroy practice, whether you are a patient there or not. Drop off your used contact lenses and blister packs to optometry@cooroy at 62 Maple Street or phone on 5442 555 for more information.

Christmas with SAUERS

An outstanding team performance by the senior lads of 3A’s got them over the line in an enthralling encounter against Palmwoods on Saturday. Winning the toss and batting first, Cooroy started strongly before accurate Palmwoods’ bowling slowed the run rate. Score board pressure then built, and Cooroy were reduced to 149 all out, with Mark Young’s classy 42 the stand out performance. In reply, those demons of the many dropped catches in their last couple of games were finally expelled, as some outstanding fielding and tight, accurate bowling meant that Palmwoods were always behind the required run rate. Wickets fell regularly to force that score board pressure, before Robbie Plant chipped in at the end taking 3 for 12, to wrap up the tail, and Palmwoods all out for 132. A true team efffort this, with everybody contributing to that well deserved victory. In their first T20 battle of the season, 5th grade hosted Landsborough at Cooroy. Batting first, Landsborough reached 8 for 120 off their 20 overs, with Grant Adams and Tony Rickards both taking 2 wickets each. In reply, Cooroy chased the total down with ease in the 16th over, with Dale Scanlan smashing a quickfire 53 including 6 sixes, and skipper Gary ‘Rowdy’ Anderson in support with a classy 27.

Round 6 saw a top of the table clash for the U15’s against Tewantin Noosa. TNT won the toss and elected to bat. Wickets were hard to come by in the early overs, but once the top order had been dismissed, the tail collapsed. Outstanding bowling from Ryan Christensen, producing his maiden 5 wicket haul (5-24), tidy medium pacers from Jacob Weinberg (2 wickets) and some fine glove work from Jack Ritchie (2 stumpings), restricted Tewantin to just 138 runs. Openers from Cooroy made a 50 run partnership, putting them on the front foot early on. Day 1 ended with Cooroy at 1/68, 70 runs behind. All to play for next week! U12 Green also hosted Palmwoods this week, and after winning the toss, elected to field first. Some good Palmwoods batting got them to 125 off their 30 overs, but the Eumundi State School ground has a fast outfield, and the boys were never worried. Some fine batting from Matt Christensen (40no), Steven Galea and Callum Steele both making 21, and Clancy Young a fine 22, helped push the total to a dominant 192 off their 30 overs. An impressive team performance, and a well earned victory. U12 White were away to division leaders SC Grammar. This produced an outstanding fielding performance from the boys, who all worked hard to restrict the classy Grammar batsmen to 154. A superb caught and bowled from Ethan Hunt, an outstanding run out by Nathan Howarth, a first career wicket and a superb catch for Nathan Hindmarsh, plus another fine bowling spell from Josh Plant (2-23) were the highlights of a true team effort. Unfortunately, the batting didn’t live up to the fielding standards, and the boys were dismissed fairly cheaply. However, lots of positives to take away from this encounter! Special mention to U10 Brodie Carroll, who filled in at the last minute and was exceptional with both bat and ball. This lad is one to watch for the future!

No Worries at Cooroy Golf Club

Manager of the Cooroy Golf Club Wayne Patston with new sponsor Claudia Zannidakis of Cooroy No Worries RV Stop

Cooroy No Worries RV Stop have taken up a 1 year major corporate sponsorship of Cooroy Golf Club. Owners of the RV Stop, John Morrow, Irene Zehnder and Claudia Zannidakis are proud supporters of the Cooroy community and believe the sponsorship deal will benefit both the Cooroy Golf Club and the RV Stop. Cooroy Golf Club Manager, Wayne Patston, said he was more than delighted that Cooroy No Worries RV Stop had taken up a major sponsorship offer. “When Noosa Council enforced their signage laws we lost over $30,000 in sponsorship deals which was a big hit for the club,” said Mr Patson. “I’m over the moon that Cooroy No Worries RV Stop has come on board and we are delighted to be able to promote such a great local business.” Cooroy No Worries RV Stop, located at 154 Holts Road, has been in operation for four years and has the capacity to

take around 30 vans. The pet friendly, fully serviced park offers everything travellers are looking for including showers, toilets, laundry, a full camp kitchen with fridge and cooking facilities and a Happy Hour ecreation room with TV. “We are happy to be able to direct visitors to all the local hot spots Cooroy and the hinterland has to offer,” said Claudia. “We can now offer discounts to visitors who wish to partake in

a round or two of golf and we are delighted to have our signage in such prominent position at the Club. “We hope more visitors will decide to come and stay at our park while they’re here and also spend some time and money at other local businesses.” Mr Patson said there were many sponsorship packages on offer at the Golf Club, from $250 to $5000 and urged any business who wished to get involved to contact him at the Club.
