Fire survivors warn ‘have a plan’

A YEAR after losing their home in the devastating Cooroibah bushfires, Holly Kemp is warning others to have an emergency plan. When on November 8, fire tore through bushland opposite their Lake Cooroibah Road home, Holly told the Cooroy Rag it happened so fast they were evacuating before they even got the notice. “It happened that quickly we didn't have time to get an evacuation notice.” Earlier that day, Holly’s husband David had had a bike accident in Brisbane and she and young daughter, Ruby were about to leave for Brisbane when Holly saw plumes of smoke in the distance. “I had gathered some important docs into a basket by the front door just in case and when it came to it, adrenaline kicked in and I grabbed what I could before yelling to our cottage tenant that it is time to go and we all jumped in the car.” While the fire raged across the road it was embers that ignited the Kemp’s Balinese hut by their pool, burning the back deck and part of the house. “It was an old weatherboard house with a timber deck around the pool. “The fire took the whole back deck and the back of the house on Friday after we left but then it self-ignited again on the Saturday and because the firies had moved on, no one noticed for hours. It was a helicopter flying overhead that saw it burning again.” Holly said when police called to tell them some damage had been sustained to their home, she thought they were referring to the deck. “I said, I know and they said, ‘No, it’s burned down.” When the family were escorted back to their property on the Sunday, nothing could have prepared the Kemps for the destruction. While neighbouring properties lost sheds

INSET AND ABOVE RIGHT: The Kemp’s home after the fire RIGHT: David Kemp, Sophie Clements and Holly Kemp and other small buildings, the Kemp’s home for the past four years had been destroyed. Wanting a fresh start for what was 2020, Holly said they had the house demolished four weeks later and started looking for a builder to help them rebuild. “It took us a little while to find a builder but Sophie from Scott Clements Constructions reached out to us on Facebook Messenger and said that they wanted to help. “Scott has been a builder for 30 years and he did what he could with his trades to rebuild our home.” Now, almost a year to the day, Holly, David and Ruby are living in a brand new, bricks and mortar home. “We moved in two weeks ago.” Looking back, Holly is grateful she took the time to gather their important documents, a few wedding photos and irreplaceable family photos. “We had 10 minutes to get out. If I had had to dig around in files, I wouldn't have had time.” Now she is warning others to do the same. “Keep documents safe or upload what you can and keep it on digital files. “Be aware of keeping things tidy in the yard. Know where things are kept and stacked. “With gardens and trees, clear what you can and what you're allowed to by council laws and keep debris away from the house. “Think about your building materials and don’t keep a Balinese hut by your pool.” Noosa Council is also warning residents to prepare an emergency plan. Councillor Karen Finzel said the sweltering conditions provided recently by the current heatwave happen to coincide with people coming together to mark one

year since the devastating bushfires. “Without question, this provides the perfect launchpad to propel even the most fatigued into action. “Understanding the likelihood and risk of emergencies within your local area ahead of our main disaster season from November to April is important. “Recently, after chatting with the bushfire survivors gathering at Noosa Council community events throughout the Shire has reminded me of the importance of time invested to prepare your own emergency plan well in advance.” Cr Finzel said have discussions with family, friends and neighbours. “Considering what you will do if an emergency happens is time well spent while not forgetting to include a plan for your home, car, family pets and livestock for all disasters.” An integral part of disaster management also includes thinking about recovery. “Disaster affects everyone differently. It's okay to ask for help and if you are able to help others the Local Disaster

Management Group will let you know how and where to register as a volunteer at the time of each disaster.” Noosa Council has launched a new emergency dashboard, a one-stop-hub for all emergency related news, support and contacts. In the event of an emergency, residents will be able to go to the dashboard and receive emergency news alerts, road conditions, power outages and weather warnings in real time as well as links to all emergency contacts, evacuation centres and relevant social media feeds. Visit Noosa Councils’ disaster dashboard here: http:// disaster.noosa.qld.gov.au/ or download Noosa Council Emergency Action Guide from Noosa Council website or telephone Council (07) 5329 6500 for limited print editions for those without internet access.

CCC says 'thanks Cooroy, you were brilliant' CHRISTMAS in Cooroy was a huge success. Many locals, hinterland residents and visitors flocked to our town to enjoy the festivities on Friday, December 4. Organised by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, there was live entertainment, kidfriendly events and competitions, a number of stores open for late night trading and food. For making the new look Christmas in Cooroy 2020, such a huge success, president Chris Bell would lke to thank: “Paul Kluck, Kerry Hodges and the Cooroy Energex team for seamlessly erecting the lights up on the tree, and in record time. Barry Hamlet, Kev Smith and Will Burns, ably assisted by Frank, for making it all happen and ensuring that the star was actually illuminated this year. Richard Hansen for live streaming on Facebook, the unofficial, COVID free, lighting up of the tree which received 2,300 views of the video in just 48 hours. Wow! “The Butter Factory Arts Centre for sponsoring the decorated bikes competition – an impressive 32 entries. Thanks also to Duncan McQueen for the unenviable task of judging the winners. “The SES who are always there, helping keep everyone safe, particularly the kids in the bike competition. “The IGA for ensuring that the Cherry Ripes shopping trolleys were filled, with what else, but Cherry Ripes and for handing out to those who deserved them. “Cooroy Pest Control for the impressive decorations on the clock tower roundabout. “Brian Luck for his marathon effort in Santa’s chair. Gelignite Jack’s for the sweet treats and his amazing helpers who handed them out to all those who enjoyed the photo booth, all 300 kids, with a few parents thrown in for good measure. “Wrights Cut Meats and the IGA for providing the hams and Brett Hill and Gary Christensen

for their persuasive skills in selling tickets. “Ray Kelly and Paul Kluck for crowd control and for keeping everyone COVID safe in the Memorial Hall. “Cooroy Rotary for their barbecue, which actually sold out. That’s unheard of! “Elsa, Anna and Olaf (of the Doo Wop Dolls) for taking time out to make a bunch of kids evening extra special, with the photo opportunities. “To all the stores who remained open and joined in the spirit of the evening with late night shopping. “Wrights Cut Meats for their generous and tasty giveaways, complete with great entertainment by Kale on guitar and vocals. “The Saw & Mill truck stage featuring the Renditions’ open mike for all up and coming musicians to play along with the band. “Robyn Kildey and Countryside Realty for generously pulling Christmas crackers with many of the visitors, none of whom went away empty-handed. “Joe from Cooroy Harvest Fresh and his lifechanging banana bags. Blue Brown Bag and Cooroy Shoes for their amazing ‘one night only’ specials. Kerry Martin from Cooroy Jeanery and Menswear for the candy canes. “We also need a huge shout out to Noosa Council for their generous support in embracing a new look Christmas in Cooroy and of course, the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Executive for making it all happen. A lot of hard work, but all very rewarding. “And last, but not least, a big vote of thanks to Adam and Jo A’Hang, who finished the evening for us on a high note by finding and handing in a wallet, completely intact, that the Chamber’s man on the microphone, Richard Hansen, had unknowingly lost, earlier in the evening!” See all our photos on page 18 and 19

Dam closure ‘end of an era’ for local fishermen LAST month, the Cooroy Rag reported Lake Macdonald will be upgraded as part of Seqwater’s Dam Improvement Program. For local fishermen like Gary Kenzler, who has been fishing there since 1968, this may mean an end of an era. Gary told the Cooroy Rag the rebuild could take up to three years to complete and then several more for the dam to return to the state it is currently in. “After the repairs and when God refills the dam with water, we will restock. But for the fish stock to get to the size and numbers they are at present, this may take several more years. But on the bright side, it’ll be there for many, many more years of happy times.” During the upgrade, the dam water will be temporarily lowered and aquatic fauna caught and relocated while the existing dam and

Robbo’s got

spillway structure are removed and a new one rebuilt in the same location. Gary said in the meantime, fish from Lake Macdonald will be kept in other local impoundments “When the time is right, we (Lake Macdonald Fresh Water Fishing Club) will be there to help with the restocking and the minding of the dam as we’ve done for the last 30 years.” Early works on the rebuild are currently underway with the construction for the replacement road on the bridge to the Noosa Water Treatment Plant.

This month we have seen the opening of another new business in town - What's for Dessert, Pomona? A delicatessen of sweet treats including local fudge, gelato and locally crafted cheeses. Yum. Businesses seem to keep booming with local eateries drawing regular crowds and hosting numerous Christmas parties. The town is bustling come Monday to Friday and on Saturday it becomes truly alive when the now-weekly markets draw people from near and far to the numerous stalls of local produce, bricka-brac, plants and more. council news

From the Mayor’s desk

IT’S hard to believe that Christmas is almost here. We’ve all had a tough year and with the mantra #weareallinthistogether never more pertinent, Noosa Council is bringing some Christmas cheer to your doorstep. We’ve launched the Connecting Noosa Christmas Convoy in an effort to spread some Christmas cheer through the community. The convoy will also help to recognise the efforts of our emergency services during Covid and the bushfires last year. They will feature in the convoy along with of course, Santa. The convoy starts in Boreen Point and Cooroibah on Monday night, December 7, 2020, and moves to Kin Kin, Pomona and Cooroy on Tuesday. It then travels through parts of Tewantin on Wednesday December 9, 2020 followed by the beachside suburbs of Peregian, Castaways and Sunrise Beach on Thursday afternoon, December 10, 2020. As many of our regular community events can’t go ahead due to the pandemic restrictions, this will ensure everyone gets to enjoy the Christmas Spirit with neighbours and family.

Speaking of Christmas, I am delighted to launch our first ever Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is a way to lend a helping hand to not-forprofit and local charities. Our local charities do a tremendous job but after such a challenging year, any support is greatly appreciated. The appeal is calling for donations of gift cards or gift vouchers to local attractions. I’m kicking off the appeal with $500 worth of gift cards and I’d be so pleased if you would join me in supporting this appeal in any way that you can- however big or small. The appeal is supporting the great works of the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul Noosa, Youturn Youth Support and Santa’s Classy Helpers. See Council’s website to find out what our charities need most and how you can help: www.noosa.qld.gov.au. Well despite a tough year for all, we all put one foot in front of the other and marched on. Council’s annual report is now live on our website. It’s an interesting snapshot of the past year. Despite Covid19 restrictions, staff answered more than 88,000 enquiries, we emptied more than 1.5million bins, libraries loaned more than 349,000 books and other items, finding new ways to serve our community even with doors having to be closed. Other highlights and one which I am incredibly proud of is the fact that we’ve almost doubled our budget on fire trail building and maintenance in Council bush reserves and we have increased our budget by 71 per cent for controlled burns on Council land. We’ve distributed over $1.3 million in grants to the community and environmental groups plus art and other projects during the 19/20 year. To finish off 2020 on a high note, a range of roadworks on Maple, Myall and Emerald Streets in Cooroy is now complete. There

wishes you a

are new bike lanes, additional disabled parking, additional motorbike parking and new asphalt. We are incredibly grateful for all the patience the locals have shown while this work has been underway, Thank you. All in all, it’s been a big year, but as the Christmas season is well and truly upon us, we have much to celebrate, reflect on and be thankful for. We hope to see as many of you as possible over the coming weeks on our Christmas Convoy and on behalf of all Councillors and Council staff I wish you and your loved ones a peaceful, joyful, safe and Merry Christmas. WITH decorations, twinkling lights and that festive feel in abundance, we are very much ready for the holiday season! As we look back on a year of change, challenges and resilience, to think in a short 12 months we have journeyed through bushfire disasters straight into a pandemic and subsequent economic recovery efforts. As all occurs, we post in Facebook updates and to Noosa 360 at www.sandybolton.com, where you can also subscribe to our monthly newsletter jammed packed with local and Chamber happenings. Out of the toughest of challenges comes new knowledge, incredible people and realisations, including what is relevant and

important in our world. It is difficult in my valedictory speech on behalf of the cross bench, to ‘wrap’ the year into 15 minutes. So for anything that did not fit in, there have been separate posts and speeches including all the ‘good’ in the budget, as well expressing deep gratitude to our residents who went above and beyond during these last months. From businesses to community groups, from students to teachers, and everyone who had to work, learn and respond quickly to a rapidly changing situation with no blueprint, words are not enough. In the angst and tears, there has also been

much hope and many positives that we can take into 2021 and beyond. As we enjoy a Christmas with loved ones, please spare thoughts for those who continue to be separated from family or suffered great loss. Please reach out to any alone, with an invitation of sharing as this can be the loneliest of times for some. Having missed many of the end of year catch ups due to 3 weeks of Parliamentary commitments including the Budget processes, I am sitting on the 10th floor of the Parliamentary ‘annexe’, eager to return home and see you all out and about… and dare I hope we may soon be allowed to hug? Our office closes for Christmas from the 18th December to the 4th January and our very hard-working team are looking forward to a ‘recharge’ in readiness for an exciting 2021. Don’t forget if you have any State matters you would like addressed prior to the break, contact us via 53193100 or noosa@parliament.qld.gov.au. In closing, under your tree this year, may the greatest gift of caring and sharing be yours, and the kindness that makes our world beautiful, come to you in abundance.

Merry Christmas everyone, see you shortly! Sandy

Manufacturing & Sales on the Sunshine Coast for Over 40 years

From Llew O’Brien... I WOULD like to extend my best wishes to everyone in the Cooroy, Pomona and Noosa’s hinterland communities for a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This year has been a difficult one for everyone as a result of the pandemic and while Australia has risen to the challenges of tackling COVID-19 better than most countries, we must acknowledge our nation’s recovery will be a slow and sometimes painful process. I am thankful to everyone in Wide Bay who showed common sense and decency in helping stop the spread of COVID-19, and particularly our medical professionals and aged care workers who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to keep us and our vulnerable elderly safe. As we move into 2021, there are many reasons we can be optimistic about a brighter year ahead. Locally, Noosa Council will receive $1.6 million from the Australian and Queensland Governments to improve and create new links within the CooranPomona section of Noosa’s hinterland trails network, helping revitalise the tourism sector. The Morrison Government is also working with the Noosa Council to replace local bridges with $450,000 allocated to replace the timber Cooroy Belli Creek Road Bridge and $755,437 to replace the timber Lawnville Road Bridge. These infrastructure projects will create and support local jobs at a time when they are needed most. The future is also looking bright for the

still family owned and operated!

In addition to over 100 models in our Double Sided, Domestic Mattress Range we also have Ensemble Bases, and Adjustable Bed Bases that include a massage feature as well Noosa Show, with a $85,675 grant through the Morrison Government’s Regional Agricultural Show Development Grants Program to revitalise the main arena of the Pomona Showgrounds, and a further $34,985 is being delivered to ensure the Noosa Show goes on next year. I recently had the honour of opening a new mural commemorating the service of Navy, Air Force and Army personnel at the Cooroy-Pomona RSL, which I was pleased to support through a $8,240 grant. I encourage everyone to pause and reflect on the service and sacrifice of our defence personnel, when visiting the RSL on Maple Street. New change room amenities at the Cooroy Badminton Club Hall are being funded through a $20,000 Building Better Regions grant, and we can look forward to a Noosa Alive festival in 2021, with a $60,000 grant to the Noosa Long Weekend to expand the program with four new performances.

Study on future role of newspapers WITH the future of local news making headlines across the globe and the rise of COVID-19 exacerbating some of the challenges facing the local sector, particularly print newspapers, a project is canvassing community opinion for a research project on the future role of local newspapers such as the Cooroy Rag . As part of an Australian Research Council Project, involving researchers and industry leaders from Deakin University, RMIT and Country Press Australia, the project brings together several of the nation’s leading local media and journalism studies experts. This study aims to move beyond merely documenting the challenges facing local news, to seek innovative solutions to secure the sustainability of the country press in a digital world. The four aims that will drive the research are: to provide an evidenced-based assessment of the civic value of Australia’s country press; to investigate understandings of sustainability and innovation in the news-media sector; to

develop a model of innovation that supports the sustainability of our country press; and to refine and extend a methodological framework for researching local news in digital spaces. The four key projects that will underpin these aims are: a comprehensive national and international assessment of government policy, reports and industry documentation on the sustainability and innovation of Australia's regional news sector; two of the largest national surveys to fully investigate the dominant factors leading to social and cultural innovation of Australia's regional news sector; targeted and expert input to solve innovation challenges through workshops and interviews with rural news proprietors, editors and journalists in Australia and internationally; and a PhD scholar will conduct a comprehensive assessment of country newspapers, charting the factors underlying their varied and mixed fortunes. Save our koalas BY EMMA SAUNDERSON AUSTRALIA is causing our beloved koalas to gradually decrease in population and the majority of us are unaware. By 2050, it is estimated that the koala species will become extinct entirely. We cannot let this happen, otherwise we will be losing a key part of Australian culture and one of our most iconic animals. Without making a change now, we will all be contributing first-hand to this devastating issue. Each of us are equipped with the ability to intervene and help our koalas be on the path to recovery. However we are not yet doing so. Currently, Australia’s climate is posing severe threats to their existence - most recently in the form of bushfires. An estimated total of 5000 koalas died in the NSW bushfires this year, that also destroyed 24% of their habitat on public land. Whilst this devastating loss could not have been prevented at the time, many other situations can be. This includes

death or injury by dogs, cats, traffic, habitat loss, human disturbance and further outbreak of diseases brought on by unnecessary stress. Humankind has a tendency to be greedy, prioritising economic profit, whilst leaving the environment as an afterthought. To overcome these issues and save the species from extinction we need to become more serious in our efforts to rectify this. Simply controlling our animals, being extra aware in areas near eucalyptus forests, minimising paper usage (to stop the need for deforestation), donating to charities that support koala rehabilitation and protection and remaining mindful of surrounding wildlife will all help significantly. This will allow them to start to return to their original lifestyle where they can live safely and disease free.

Kindy fired up by special guests THE Cooroy Community Kindergarten children were very excited to have special guests fire-fighter Glenn and George come along and share about their jobs, especially what special uniforms they have to wear to protect them from fires. The children learnt some handy tips if their smoke alarm goes off or their clothes catch on fire. The shiny red fire engine had lots of eyes

checking over the very interesting and unusual tools and equipment and climbing up into the big truck isn’t as easy as it looks. The grass is looking very green thanks to them testing out the powerful hose on the pretend fire. The fire-fighters were very impressed with how quickly all the children performed our fire-drill. Do you know it’s all about “Get down low and GO GO GO” ?

Business idea becomes reality for local students COLE Campbell and Cole Suter both just graduated from Good Shepherd Lutheran College and these savvy business entrepreneurs have already transformed a business idea into reality. Cole and Cole have started an online business selling small quantities of graphite products including graphite blocks, graphite rods, and flexible graphite sheets to businesses all over Australia. Their newest product is Rigid Graphite Insulation. By utilising the insulating properties of graphite combined with classic insulating techniques, they offer a range of industrial-grade insulating materials. Customers have included universities, glassblowers, and rocket manufacturers. In 2019, both students were fortunate to connect with a local business and engage in work experience with Graphite Australia, a supplier of quality graphite and carbon products. Graphite Australia were pleased to participate in the Good Shepherd Lutheran College Work Experience program and commend the College for supporting students to gain exposure to the world of business and entrepreneurship. During their placement with Graphite Australia, the students gained insight into international sales and marketing and received an explanation of various graphite products, their manufacturing processes and industry applications. Cole Suter said the work experience placement was a fantastic opportunity to gain first-hand experience about what real international business looks like.

“The entire experience was extremely engaging and educational." But Cole and Cole’s experience didn’t end there. Prior to the chaos that COVID-19 brought with it, their knowledge of procurement was further enhanced by a trip to China to meet with multiple suppliers and the company’s procurement partner. After cementing a good understanding of the product and processes, these two Good Shepherd graduates proceeded to complete the necessary business set up which included the development of a website, various business-related registrations, and financial planning, before launching Speciality Graphite Australia in 2019. The business has since been growing in size and reputation.

CSS student wins writers award

Betty McAdam presents award to Heidi Anthony A COOROY State School student has won the Laraine Mahoney Writers Award for 2020. Heidi Anthony was awarded the “Best Writer in Year 6” by Cooroy-Noosa Genealogical and Historical Research Group (CNG) in association with the Cooroy Book Club and the Cooroy State School. Heidi received $100 in prize money and a trophy, presented to her by CSS English teacher, Betty McAdam. The “Best Writer” award was introduced in memory of Laraine Mahoney, who passed away in 2018. Laraine Mahoney was a teacher at Cooroy State School, a member of CNG Group and Cooroy Book Club. Heidi’s written piece titled, The Grand

Lord Brumby was inspired by a picture of a rickety-foot bridge that was supplied to all students for the writing exercise. In her story, Heidi’s character falls through the bridge into the river below and emerges, battered but luckily still alive, on the shore of a wonderful, somehow magical island. Heidi, who says she would like to work with animals one day, featured a brumby horse in her story. The Grand Lord Brumby will be republished in the March edition of the CNG’s Missing Link Journal. The Missing Link Journal is published twice a year, in March and November, and is available to the public online at: www.genealogy-noosa.org.au.

Community spirit shining bright

FOR Shane and Lorna O’Donnell from Cooroy Termite & Pest Control, installing the Christmas lights on Cooroy’s famous clock tower is a way of giving back to the community. “We love living and working in Cooroy,” Lorna said. “And we’re so grateful for all the support we’ve received over the years.” The O’Donnell’s bought Cooroy Pest Control 11 years ago and since then it has grown steadily from a single-vehicle operation to a company with five vehicles on the road and nine staff, many of whom live locally. It was 10 years ago that the company volunteered to help decorate the Cooroy roundabout and they have basically been doing the clock tower ever since. “You know Christmas is around the corner when you see Shane up a ladder decorating the clock tower.” One incident, which they still laugh about today, happened when Shane’s youngest daughter, Hannah, was working at the Cooroy Hotel pub. “In the middle of her shift, one of the patrons asked if that was her dad who was decorating the clock tower. When Hannah

said that it was, the patron replied casually, ‘Well, he’s just fallen off his ladder!’ “Luckily, Shane had landed in some bushes so there was no permanent damage. These days, he does admit to exercising a bit more caution so as not to provide the guys in the pub with any more entertainment.” Taking the odd spill is actually something Shane is familiar with from his life before moving to Australia. Although born in Perth, he grew up in Zimbabwe where one of his first jobs was photographing and filming white-water rafting on the Zambezi River. He met Lorna in Victoria Falls and they ran their own business there for many years before the economy started to deteriorate. “With the Zim dollar plummeting faster than a bungee jumper off Vic Falls bridge, we decided it was time to move and Australia was the obvious destination,” Lorna said. Sydney was where they started but it wasn’t long before they were craving the wide-open spaces which they were used to. Cooroy seemed like the perfect place. They moved onto acreage near Lake Macdonald and they haven’t looked back since. In addition to the Christmas lights, Cooroy Termite & Pest Control try to help the community in other areas as well. They have installed termite protection systems around the Memorial Hall and the Cooroy Scout Hall which they maintain on a pro bono basis. And then, of course, there is the work that goes into making that clock tower sparkle so beautifully.

Former NDSHS students flying high

Nina Burkardt FROM aerospace studies to flying high in the sky, two former Noosa District State High School students are loving life as commercial pilots. Nina Burkardt and Mitchell Thomas both graduated from Noosa High in 2017 and now both work at Wide Bay Air Charters in Kybong. Cooroy local Nina said she discovered her love of flying at 15 but the seed was planted long before then. “My father was an aircraft engineer at Mcdermott Aviation. We spent a lot of school holidays in hangers. Then my older brother started flying model airplanes. “Initially the bug would have come from being around the helicopters but I think it was after my brother got me into model aeroplanes too.” From there, Nina enrolled in aerospace studies at school. “During the course, one of my teachers found a scholarship for the Recreational Flying Company in Kybong and said I should apply. “I did and I got a phone call to say I’d won the runner up prize which included the first five hours of my training for free.” And Nina has been flying ever since. Today, the 20-year-old lives in Cooran and works for Wide Bay Air Charter as a casual pilot, helping with scenic flights. “We do a lot of Fraser Island scenic flights and I get to fly a lot with Mitchell which is great.” And Nina has aspirations to become a crop duster in the future. “I’d love to do crop dusting. There’s a lot of experience needed before you can do it including a turbine rating and more hours so I’ve got a little more to do first.” Mitchell Thomas grew up in a small town

on the Darling Downs and moved to Cooroy with his family in 2006. With a grandfather and an aunty who used to fly, Mitchell said when he enrolled in the same aerospace studies at Noosa High they were very encouraging. “There are a few different people in my family who used to fly. My aunt did her helicopter licence and Grandad got his private pilot licence back in the 60s. “When I told them I was doing aerospace as a subject at school they were both very encouraging.” After completing the aerospace subject, which Mitchell said is very similar to the theory for your licence, he asked Nina about her scholarship. “I asked her where she was going and went to the same place.” And he hasn’t looked back. Still living in Cooroy, the now 20-yearold is working as a commercial pilot at Wide Bay Air Charter too. “I do their scenic flights and some of the charter flights at their centre. “Sometimes it’s really busy with quite a few flights on the weekends and other times it's once or twice a week. “We’re starting to get busier coming up to Christmas as people give flights as presents.” Mitchell has just completed his familiarisation flight to fly a Baron airplane which does longer charter flights. Wide Bay Air Charter Chief Pilot Paul McKeown said Nina and Mitchell are two fine examples of young, local people who have a dream and are working hard to make that dream a reality. “They’re two of our youngest commercial pilots and they are awesome.”

Local writer pens a quirky Christmas story LOCAL writer Christina Darwin has written a quirky children’s picture book about a brush turkey. Christina said the story came about after watching brush turkeys and other rainforest birds in her garden in Cooran. “It occurred to me that Australian children’s picture books were still dominated by the ‘cute and cuddly’ Australian animals, predominantly the koala, kangaroo and wombat. There are very few stories about rainforest birds, reptiles and other fauna and flora.” Christina said her aim is to educate children about the environment and preserving habitat. “When we educate children to care for the environment, we need to inform them of the immense diversity that exists within it. That includes the lesser-known species and their habitats.” So, with this passion to extend awareness in mind, Christina wrote her first story “Quirky’s Christmas Tree,” then drew up sketches to convey her ideas for each page and approached Alan Pirie, a talented local artist, to produce the illustrations from them. “Alan also has a passion for native birds which are the subject of many fine drawings in his private collection.” The result is a vibrant children’s picture book that gives a uniquely Australian slant on Christmas. “Its main characters are the Australian Brush Turkey and the Blue Satin Bowerbird. The story is written in rhyming couplets and is wonderfully illustrated with vibrant colours.

“Turkeys have traditionally been synonymous with Christmas. Along the Eastern seaboard of Australia, we have our very own turkey, known to First Nations people as ‘Gweela.’ It is a protected bird recognised for its determination. “The Blue Satin Bowerbird is famous for decorating its nest or ‘bower’ with brightly coloured objects. The pairing of these two birds and their unique characteristics, provides the backstory for this picture book,” Christina said. The story is one of optimism, with an emphasis on preservation of habitat and underlying messages of cooperation, tolerance and creative thinking. “Quirky the brush turkey and Billy the bowerbird give us every reason to celebrate Christmas with their comical antics." Quirky’s Christmas Tree is available for purchase in stores throughout Noosa and the hinterland including Noosa Information Centre in Hastings Street, Sandy Pages in Noosa Junction, Gibsons in Noosaville, Tewantin Newsagency Village Book Shop, Hastings St Annie’s Book Shop in Kingfisher Drive, Peregian, Bowerbird in Eumundi, Yellow Door and Alamazon in Cooran and Landcare in Pomona. The sequel, Little Bea, the Albino Turkey will be launched at Easter.

where are they now?

Cooroy seeing double - again MANY long-time Cooroy locals would remember seeing well-known twins Nick and Leo Comino in their parent’s hardware store. And if those locals have been in Cooroy lately, they might think they are seeing double - again. While Nick has been living in Cooroy for the past eight years, as the owner and managing director of popular cafe Jamaica Blue, twin Leo has recently moved back to town. So if you think you’ve seen Nick and said hello only to receive a funny look, you might be saying hello to Leo. The Cooroy Rag caught up with the Comino twins to find out what has changed for them since they left Cooroy as young men. Nick - After finishing school, Nick did his chef apprenticeship in Noosa. “I worked at a couple of different restaurants there then moved out to Emerald where I worked for six years as a chef and towards the end, managing restaurants.” While living in Emerald, Nick met his wife, Tanya and they had daughter Ellie (11) and son Ari (9). But after six years in central Queensland he said they’d “had enough” and it was time to “move back to paradise”. “So we came home to Cooroy and started looking for businesses here.” And they found Jamaica Blue. “Ironically, I used to work at Bistro Bistro where Jamaica Blue is now.” Eight years later and Jamaica Blue is a thriving eatery in Cooroy run by Nick and his team of 16 staff. “Business is good and I would like to thank Cooroy for their support over the years and for being understanding with the restrictions surrounding COVID.” One of the benefits of moving back to your hometown,” Nick said is that his children are being taught by teachers who taught him during his school years.

“Both my kids went to Cooroy Kindy and were taught by Diana who taught Leo and I. Now they are both at Cooroy State School. Ellie has just been told she’s school captain next year.” Nick said he and his family love being back in Cooroy. “We live in paradise. We took it for granted when we were kids, then you move around a bit and go hang on, our parents lived here for a reason.” Nick and Leo’s parents, Tim and Anna Comino bought the Mitre 10 where it is today but moved it out to the old Energex building on Jarrah Street. After they sold it, it moved back to its original shop front, where it remains in Maple Street. Leo - Since leaving school, Leo has done a lot of interesting things - and has some interesting stories to go with them. “I left home as soon as school finished and started working in Noosa, then got into door-to-door sales. “After that I moved to Emerald at 18 where I worked with family doing a traineeship in hospitality.” Leo said after lots of long hours he took on another job - the hardest one yet. “I started working in a foundry. They melt metal and made anything metal related for railway and construction. That was hard

work. I’d ride my bike there in 40 degree heat and then work 10 hours a day dragging metal, grinding and welding next to a 1,300 degree furnace.” After leaving Emerald, Leo went to Brisbane where he obtained an advanced Diploma in Business. “It was half a degree in a year but when I finished, it was at the same time as all the uni graduates. I found I couldn't get work so I went back into hospitality. “At one stage I had this crazy sales job. It was on commission only, selling stuff imported from China like remote controlled cars, candles, diary. We’d take our stock on a trolley on the train out into the suburbs of Brisbane and cold canvas businesses. I did quite well at that but there was no future.” Leon said after working in sales he realised it was better than hospitality and went in to work in sales with a contractor for AAPT and Optus. “I worked my way up to manager and then I was like, what’s next. I’d always wanted to do real estate so I applied for a job but went to the wrong real estate agency on the otherwise of town! Not ideal when you’re going for a job in real estate but somehow I convinced the guy to give me a job on a wage even though I had no car, driver’s or real estate licence and within a couple of weeks I’d taken a loan to buy a car and taught myself how to drive, passed my driver’s licence and then got my real estate licence.” Leo then sold real estate for two years but after hurting his ankle doing Japanese jiu jitsu he moved back to Cooroy for a brief hiatus to rehabilitate before moving to Melbourne where he has lived for the past 10 years working up the corporate ladder growing a small agency into a market leader. Then earlier this year, in the middle of

Leo and wife Kanna

Nick and wife Tanya with children Ellie and Ari the pandemic, Leo launched his own business providing digital marketing services for large ecommerce retailers. Today he has a team of 15, works with market leading brands like RM Williams and is hitting impressive milestones. “This year has been really challenging. I got married last November, left the business I was running, then the pandemic hit and I launched my business. My wife, Kanna fell pregnant while we had no income and we drove from Victoria to Cooroy to escape the pandemic and help my parents. It has been the biggest year of my life.” Leo and Kanna will be in Cooroy for the interim. “We have an apartment back in Melbourne but we’re just waiting to see what happens with the pandemic.”

GIFT DEPARTMENT

The Rag R Reeview by The Rusty Fork WELCOME to our latest version of The Rag Review. This month we selected The Pomona Distilling Co. Now, I have to tell you, The Rusty Fork has tried this place when it first opened and didn’t rush back. But we had some mates visiting and put together a party of eight and tried again. Wow! It really was a second coming. The quality of the food, the polished and friendly staff, the beautiful courtyard all led to a great night and left our visitors with a strong appreciation for the hinterland dining culture. It was a hot and humid Saturday when we went and I was dreading sitting outside. I was wrong! The gentle breeze that flowed through the courtyard among the festive lighting, made the whole setting quite beautiful. I started with a cleansing Japanese Lager from Heads of Noosa, one of my all time favourite beers, and produced just down the road. I did mention how hot the day had been, so quickly had a second. Mrs Fork tried a Cooroora Mist, a signature gin combined with elderflower and rosewater syrup and lots of ice. A great, sweet, refreshing cocktail to make the balmy evening even more perfect. Our friends also tried the Pomona Spritz with Aperol, lemon and sparkling wine. The jug didn’t last long. Time to order our meals and I was pleased that the table ordered a wide array of food for me to sample! Entrees included Bao which was fresh, succulent pork belly, and a flavour treat. Scallops were delightful and the onion bhaji was crisp, tasty and full of awesome flavours.

One of our friends had the Charcuterie board, and the cheese and local produce were a standout. Mains arrived, which were the most delicious panko-crumbed flathead fillets and great chips. The pork belly was very popular, and judging by the clean plates was a big hit. But the star of the show was the chicken parmi, the spicy Korean sauce instead of stodgy tomato, the succulent chicken and the crisp panko crumb, great chips and Kimchi mayo. The flavours were explosive, and one of the best parmi’s the rusty Fork has ever had, and believe me, it’s not my first rodeo! The mains were all accompanied by Yalumba Shiraz which was beautiful, and reasonably priced at $42 per bottle. Unfortunately, we didn’t try any of the desserts but what a great reason to go back. Overall, we had a great night and will be sure to go back next time we have visitors. There is no better upmarket pub food in the hinterland, so grab some mates and go before summer ends! Exclusive health retreat opens

A NEW exclusive health retreat has opened in Cooroy. Set on 75 acres of koala habitat at Black Mountain, Sundara Ayurveda Retreat is a place for anyone wanting to be nurtured, take a deep pause or rest and create a new path of vitality and health. Founders Heidi and Joe Veraa said the retreat has been a vision of theirs for many years. “Our exclusive retreat space has been a vision of ours for a good 25 years of studying yoga, meditation and classical ayurvedic medicine. “We have brought all of our loves of natural healing and cleansing together to offer one-on-one retreats and we also welcome couples and friends.” Heidi and Joe offer exclusive day retreats as well as three, five and seven-day programs for one guest at a time. “This is a personal service with a personalised program created for the guest with Ayurvedic practitioners, specially trained Ayurveda therapists,

yoga and meditation teachers, soul guides, life and diet coaches, Crystal Tone sound experiences and clean, organic Ayurvedic food and teas.” Heidi and Joe said they created an experience where guests can rejuvenate from decades of deep stress and gently or deeply cleanse with a client specific detox program. “These are opportunities for a full reset of every layer of the human being.” Facilities include a Magnesium pool, hydrotherapy pool and infrared sauna. On a dedicated nature reserve, guests can also choose from a number of walking tracks around the property that are semirainforest with a healthy group of koalas, deep ponds and a creek with waterfalls and a family of platypus. “The land is full of joyful nature and guests will be nurtured.” For more information contact Heidi and Joe at Sundara on: 07 5455 5050, email: welcome@sundara.com.au or visit: www.sundara.com.au.

Feel your best this silly season THE party vibe is in the air and Christmas is fast approaching. Cooroy LiveLife pharmacists have these helpful hints to keep you feeling your best throughout the silly season: Find time to relax and take some time out for you. You may even like to take a few moments a day to practice meditation or stress-relieving breathing techniques. Stay active and remember to keep up your exercise routine. Take advantage of those beautiful summer days and take a walk in the park, or down by the beach. Stay hydrated and ensure you are drinking plenty of water, especially if you are indulging in some alcoholic Christmas cheer. Try to keep to no more than one alcoholic drink per hour. Remember to fit in your vegetables, fruit and whole-grains in between the yummy

Christmas treats. Nutrition is what keeps your body fuelled for the exciting day-today festivities. Try to keep seven to eight hours of sleep in your daily routine. Consider supplements to support your body during this busy time of the year: - B-group vitamins, for energy and recovery after consuming alcohol - St Mary’s Thistle, to support the liver detoxification process - Multi-vitamins, to ensure you aren’t missing out of anything essential when your diet may be a little less balanced than usual - Probiotics, to keep your digestive health in optimal condition and support your immune system For more helpful hints, see the staff at Cooroy LiveLife Pharmacy.

Cutting-edge robotic technology advances rehabilitation at Eden

NEW state-of-the-art robotic technology has been launched at Eden Private Hospital in Cooroy, making it the only hospital in South-East Queensland to offer an extensive robotics rehabilitation program. The technology, which has just arrived in Australia, will benefit adult and paediatric rehabilitation patients by helping to improve functional deficits associated with stroke and other neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and Parkinson's, as well as a range of disabilities. The program was launched after a significant investment in state-of-the-art robotics, sensors, virtual reality and gamification equipment to achieve enhanced results for patients. Eden Private chief executive officer, Jo

Munday, said hospital operator Healthe Care successfully trialled the technology earlier this year at Eden Private before establishing the advanced rehabilitation program. "Our focus is on remaining at the forefront of new and innovative technologies that can improve outcomes for patients and there is a significant evidence-base on the benefits of introducing robotics into our rehabilitation program, a widely used approach internationally, particularly in Europe. "Eden Private has a long-established reputation of pioneering rehabilitation on the Sunshine Coast and with robotic technology the future of healthcare, we continue that proud track-record with this new program." Eden Private director of rehabilitation, Dr

Phoebe Slape said the results and feedback from patients who trialled the robotics technology were overwhelmingly positive. "One of Eden’s young stroke survivors said she felt she completed her exercises much more comprehensively on the devices than she did in traditional therapy sessions and we had a patient with multiple sclerosis tell us she felt significant benefit from the couple of weeks of the trial. "Evidence shows repetition aids recovery and, across the board, patients find the robotics not only challenges but engages them to keep working towards their goals, with gaming and virtual reality incorporated to aid in motivation." Eden Private Hospital Allied Health manager John Turnbull said the new technology enables the hospital to enhance the effect of traditional rehabilitation by allowing patients to engage in a higher volume of therapy within a similar or reduced timeframe. "It has particular application for those who

have suffered a stroke as it provides the opportunity for greater engagement with cognitive and motor retraining activities, which is vital to promoting recovery of lost function. "Exposure to increased volume and activity is the most important thing in neurological recovery for many patients and with stroke the common theme is 'the more you do, the better you recover'." Mr Turnbull said the technology also enabled real-time feedback during therapy sessions and would be offered as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program that included traditional interdisciplinary therapies. "The new technology provides reports on assessment, activity volume and progress and connects the patient information across the various devices so they can see how they are progressing in a graphic way, which can be highly motivating. "We believe the incorporation of this new technology along with a rehabilitation program heavily focussed on functional retraining will allow us to achieve optimal results with patients." Eden Private, the longest operating hospital on the Sunshine Coast, is licensed to provide level five rehabilitation, offering intensive programs to patients across all age groups. The new robotics will be available to inpatients, day patients and outpatients, with those who are uninsured able to access a package of sessions, tailored to their individual needs. The therapy is also available to patients under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) or other funding schemes.

With appreciation and gratitude we wish you a

Six-foot brown caught in Cooran A MASSIVE six-foot brown snake has been caught at a home in Cooran. Snake Catcher Noosa Luke Huntley told the Cooroy Rag it has to be one of the biggest ones this season. “It wasn’t as big as the one I caught outside the aged care facility in Cooroy recently. But it was up there. It was a big, thick, chunky male.” Luke said he got a call from a mum in Cooran saying a big snake had gone into a downpipe on her property and hadn’t come out. “I blocked one end off and started filling it with water thinking that would flush him out. I tried that six

times but the snake was so big it could wedge its body into the elbow of the pipe. “Slowly he slithers out straight into the bag and when I relocated him, he was so calm. He didn’t have a go at me once.” Luke said it was a big male. “With brown snakes, the females when fully grown are typically smaller and petite. While the males are big and chunky with big heads.” Luke said breeding season is now over and there will be a lull in snake activity until hatching season in February. “Over Christmas and early January,

female snakes go to lay their eggs and the males, tired after breeding season, tend to disappear. “Hatching season is February and it will be insane. Because it hasn’t been too dry, there’s been so many snakes around. There have been more browns this season than I have ever got. I think it is a combination of a good amount of rain before breeding season and the fires from last year pushing more wildlife closer to people.” For snake relocations call Luke at Snake Catcher Noosa on0499 920 290.

Majestic Theatre

The Art Hub THE Anglican Church, Cooroy was opened and dedicated by Archdeacon Henry Le Fanu on 21 March, 1914 . The land was given to the Church by Mr Syd Fisher. In 1911 Rev John Steer, the first minister and a planning committee envisaged the church being built in a short time but due to

unforeseen circumstances, there had to be a revision of the original plans and a contract was given to Livingstone and Lewis at the end of August 1913 for a sum of 200 pounds. This building was destroyed by a cyclone in February 1954 and the present building was dedicated in November 1954.

Restoration Australia episode airs THE episode about the Cooroy house on Restoration Australia has aired. For three years, ABC show Restoration Australia followed Melissa and Jack Boyd’s journey of lovingly restoring the 100-yearold Queenslander they had moved to their McPauls Road property. Melissa told the Cooroy Rag they thought “the ABC did a great job putting it all together and we were all pretty happy with it”. The episode can be streamed on the ABC iView app.

THE Art & Sculpture Gallery at THE ART HUB Cooroy is currently exhibiting the amazing creative artworks of Jan Carlson, Peter Scott and Carolan Ciot. Jan Carlson discovered watercolour in the early 1990s, in particular the wet in wet technique. She immediately fell in love with the medium, its challenges and unpredictable qualities. Since then, Jan has won many awards and in 2006 she was asked to teach watercolour classes at the Royal Qld Art Society, Brisbane. She participated in the Hamilton Island program when she held numerous classes and workshops. Peter Scott is a ceramic artist and is again exhibiting at the Gallery. Peter is also currently exhibiting in Japan. While Peter was living with his son he became totally immersed in the Japanese World of Artistic creations. He returns to Japan

New dessert shop satisfying sweet tooths A NEW shop has opened in Pomona to satisfy the sweet tooths. What’s for Dessert Pomona? has opened on Reserve Street with cabinets overflowing with delicious treats. Owner Sharron McAtee said they have gelato, cakes, desserts, cheesecakes, fudge and more. “We have nine gelato flavours, whole cakes, half cakes and cakes of all different sizes, sticky date puddings, cheesecakes, trifles, fruit salad, fudgyboombahs fudge and more. “Some of the food I make, the rest is made by a chef and an Italian company both in Brisbane. All the desserts are made from scratch, like homemade food. I’m very particular about that.” Sharron and husband John Haverkamp opened the shop because simply, “everyone loves desserts”. “We owned a deli in Alstonville in NSW for six years, we retired, got bored with retirement and decided to open another business. “We decided to open a dessert shop because everyone loves desserts. People can’t resist it, when you have a really good colourful display. “We hope everyone enjoys the dessert concept. Plus it was bringing something different to Pomona. There was a need for scrummy sweets.” Sharron said they spent a lot of time researching areas and settled on Pomona for a number of reasons. “We had a look around at various places

in the area. First, we looked for vacant shop and then the location of that shop. “My daughter lives in Yandina so I knew the town and it was the best fit.” What’s for Dessert Pomona? opened two weeks ago and Sharron said the response has been very good. “People have been really positive and friendly and the other business owners have been very welcoming towards us. “Everyone has been generous of spirit and we really feel it.” Sharron and John are now gearing up for a busy Christmas.

Cooran couple create environmental activity books PASSIONATE environmentalists Jim Bird and Helen Moffitt have created an environmental activity book in an effort to bring a voice to Australia’s youth. The Cooran couple said they collaborated creatively to produce an environmental initiative that could reach right across Australia, after feeling frustrated by the ineffectual response from the government to take appropriate action in regards to tackling climate change. Jim said each book carries an important message. “They have not only fun puzzles and interesting facts, they are also highly educational and come with a postcard addressed to the Prime Minister, asking him to take immediate action to greatly expand the production of solar and wind power energy, building our future on renewable energies and not on fossil fuels.” Jim and Helen hope through the delivery of many postcards to the PM over a long period of time, he will be made further aware that the Australian public knows he is receiving them. “We believe that young people may

succeed where we adults are failing, and that if the Prime Minister receives many postcards from young people around Australia, he will be compelled to respond to their requests,” Helen said. At their own expense, Jim and Helen have produced 10,000 copies of the activities books and have begun to distribute these, free of charge, to young people. “Already, we are receiving a great response. The books have also been offered to schools, and we are hopeful they too take part in the process of offering our kids an opportunity to make their opinion heard concerning their future.” Jim said the Sunshine Coast Environmental Council have pledged their support for the project (non-financial). "We do hope to recoup some finances through our Go Fund Me campaign. Find further info about our broader plans and help support us through our website: https://ourfutureshowbag.org/.” The environmental activity books are available free from Cooran General Store and Pomona Newsagency.

“We have already started receiving Christmas orders for cheesecakes, cakes, tarts and pies. “We also have a lot of Christmas sweets and condiments that are selling really well such as plum puddings, biscuits and traditional sauces.” They even have sweet treats for your pets. “We have dog and horse Christmas treats that are good enough to eat!” What’s for Dessert Pomona is open Monday to Friday 9.30am to 4pm and Saturday 8.30am to 1pm.

Operator sought for Pomona pool

THE Department of Education owns the Pomona State School pool, with the school responsible for appointing a new operator (lessee). Should the school be successful in engaging an operator who is willing to provide community access outside of school times then Council will make a $10,000 contribution available to the operator to help offset some of the operational costs. This practice is consistent with Council's actions in previous years. Operating a pool is costly and complicated and the low level of community utilisation over recent years has eroded the confidence of prospective operators in the viability of the operation. To date the financial viability of the operation has not been proven. In the meantime, Council is pleased to support a number of other aquatic facilities in the Shire, which the community can readily access. These include the Tewantin and Cooroy school pools - both also recipients of a $10,000 contribution from Council in exchange for providing community access - and the Noosa Aquatic Centre, the Shire's flagship aquatic facility which Council proudly owns and operates. Noosa Council issued this statement to Cooroy Rag.

Straw bale house wins awards

A STRAW bale house in Black Mountain has won awards for its excellence in sustainable living. Designed by WD Architects and built by Cooran company Overland Design and Construct, the house won the Master Builders Excellence in Sustainable Living Award for the Sunshine Coast then Queensland and was a finalist in the nationals. WD Architects and Overland Design and Construct business partner Andrew Webb told the Cooroy Rag the house is made out of straw bales, cypress pine and lime render. “A key benefit in this climate is the low amount of energy it takes to create the walls - from growing to transporting the materials - and at the end of the building’s life in 100 or more years, it’s compostable and non-toxic. “The cypress pine framing is naturally termite resistant, the internal walls are light straw clay, which is a good way to get some thermal mass into the structure and the external walls are rendered. “With half a-metre-thick walls and a wellinsulated ceiling and metal roof, it is a 10

star rated house with no need for any artificial heating or cooling all year round.” The house, built for a local couple and their dogs, is two storeys with a honed concrete slab on the ground level and main living area and bedrooms on the second level. Built overlooking the rolling green pastures of Black Mountain, the house is in a bushfire zone but Andrew said straw bale houses stand up well to bushfires. “With rendering inside and out straw bale walls are rated up to Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) 29.” Andrew said while winning the excellence in sustainable living award is kudos for their business, it is what they specialise in. “The focus of Overland Design and Construct is to design and build energy efficient sustainable buildings. For me, sustainable living is the focus of my career.” While Andrew designs the sustainable buildings, business partner Phil Schou builds them. “Phil is the licenced builder in the company with decades of experience.”

Pomona Kin Kin Road voted worst road in Queensland POMONA Kin Kin Road has been voted the worst road in Queensland by RACQ members. The RACQ Unroadworthy Roads Survey 2020 received more than1000 nominations for 410 different Queensland roads that members considered to be in “poor or inadequate condition, unfit for the function they were designed to perform or not providing an acceptable level of service to the road user”. Pomona Kin Kin Road received 84 nominations, knocking the Bruce Highway out of the top spot. Save Noosa Hinterland Inc. association President Sarah Keating told the Cooroy Rag the survey reflects how dangerous the road is. "It has three single-lane bridges, steep winding paths with a sheer drop, several areas where there is only space for one vehicle and no pavements or laybys. "Plus the road is crumbling everywhere as it is only a poured on road." The survey results come ahead of a roundtable meeting at Noosa Council on Wednesday, December 16 to discuss Pomona Kin Kin Road and Cordwells Concrete Quarry. "The meeting on Wednesday is a big one. There will be two representatives from Cordwells as well as Noosa Council CEO and Mayor and councillors," Sarah said. Save Noosa Hinterland Inc. is hosting a meeting that afternoon to update the community. "It's hard to keep everyone informed because not everyone on the route has Facebook so we're holding a meeting that afternoon at the Majestic Theatre. "State MP Sandy Bolton and Noosa

Council Mayor Clare Stewart are going to be there to update everyone direct from Council because everyone is getting stressed with the miscommunication about what is being done." Sarah said the association is concerned heading into the holiday season about the number of tourists that will be on Pomona Kin Kin Road. "It has been promoted by Noosa Tourism as a tourist drive and they've no idea of the dangers and what they're going to come across." Earlier last month, the speed limit on two sections of Pomona Kin Kin Road was reduced to 80km/h to improve safety for motorists and address the ongoing concerns of residents. The 90km/h speed limit has been reduced to 80km/h northbound from Pomona through to the start of the 60km/h limit near Upper Pinbarren Creek Road, which will assist in creating safer crossing of the bridges, including Six Mile Bridge #7 while the existing 100km/h speed limit has been reduced to 80km/h from Williams Road to the start of the 60km/h zone on approach to Kin Kin. Festival at CMH SUNSHINE Butterflies are now offering one-on-one ‘Farm Animal Enrichment Sessions’ to assist people of all ages and abilities. Founder and CEO Leanne Walsh said the sessions allow participants to care and interact with their farm animals in a safe and supportive environment. “Participants develop various life skills that help build self-esteem, confidence and shape positive behaviours. “These sessions are open to the general public and people of all abilities, with facilities offering wheelchair access.” Each session offers individualised instruction, depending on the participant's needs and confidence with animals. “Our experienced instructors and support workers provide social and emotional support with every session and tailor the activities to suit the needs of each participant. “Some of the benefits may include improving mood, developing communication skills to connect with others, lowering anxiety and decreasing agitation, encouraging self-expression and decreasing isolation and depression.” The sessions allow people of all abilities to experience the benefits of a

human-animal bond through fun and safe farmyard activities. “They can observe and interact with our various farm animals using communication, trust and confidence skills. “Liberty Training, which is delivered by our ‘horse whisperer’ Sally Clay, allows the participant to develop a true connection with the horse, pony or donkey without ropes or reins. This is extremely rewarding and practises trust-building using positive communication. “And there are mutual animal enrichment practices including grooming, petting and stroking our horses, ponies and donkey,” Leanne said. Sessions can be funded from Core or Capacity NDIS funding and are conducted at Sunshine Butterflies’ ‘Our Backyard’ the five-acre home in Cooroibah. “‘Our Backyard’ is home to numerous friendly farm animals including two cows, a goat, several sheep, Jimmy the donkey, ducks, chickens, geese, guinea fowls, a family of peacocks, two miniature ponies, a horse, three dogs and Rosie the cat.” For more information call 07 5470 2830 or admin@sunshinebutterflies.com.au

IF you learn just one thing every day, you'd become a wise person. This is the sentiment of Probus Cooroy members after a recent visit to the Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum. On the outing organised by Iris, the group learned that in 1867, James Nash panned 70 ounces of gold which sparked a gold rush that created the city of Gympie and saved the new colony of Queensland from bankruptcy. Not only did the miners work hard, but they also played cards with round playing cards. Who would have known such things existed? From the Museum, members adjourned to the old Gympie Railway Station where they were made most welcome and enjoyed a tasty lunch. In late November, members met at Goodness Gracious in Cooroy for morning coffee where Dawn had decorated the space in the spirit of Christmas. Members, families and guests will celebrate the club’s Christmas lunch at Saw & Mill. Probus Cooroy is proud to have continued operating this year the best

it possibly could under trying circumstances. Christmas Greetings to all and a special thanks to the Cooroy RSL for being so accommodating and the Cooroy Rag for publicising the club's activities. Next year should see many more fun activities when COVID allows the club to spread its wings. If you'd like to join, phone 0413 947 320.

Lions Club donate electoral printers to local schools THE Cooroy Pomona Lions Club have donated printers used by the Electoral Commission during the recent election, to local schools. President Terie Wakeham said when the opportunity arose to recycle the printers, the Club moved fast to secure them. “We had to move quickly to request them but thanks to members Peter and Mary Kiernan, once contact was made, the printers became property of the Club.” Terie said member, Geoff Baileu then made contact with all the local schools to arrange donating the recycled printers. So far, three printers have been donated to Kin Kin Primary School, four to Federal Primary and another five to Cooroy State Primary School. “Geoff, another member, Ashley and I, were able to carry on the Lions tradition of ‘we serve’ by delivering the printers to the local schools shortly thereafter.” Terie said the schools were delighted with the new printers. “They stated many students had iPads

In keeping with the CWA theme the Lions ladies answered the call to action and whipped up some yummy cakes and slices for sale. THE Lake Macdonald Fresh Water Fishing Club is celebrating another year under their belts. Gary Kenzler said there weren’t too many outings in 2020 but lots of fish caught. “We had a good turnout at our last comp recently with eleven adults. Within half an hour I’d caught a 43cm Bass which was bigger than any Russell caught but size didn’t count, I later found out. It was all about quantity.” At the end of the event, the number of fish caught were: 62 Bass of average size 31/ 45cm, two Yellow Belly of average size 41cm, two Saratoga and four catfish of average size 46cm. The winners were: Sixth place: Gary with four Bass and one catfish. Fifth place: Wayne with five Bass. Fourth place: Timmy with five Bass. Third place: Paul with five Bass (one at 45cm). Second place: Mike with five Bass (one at 45cm) biggest Bass first caught and one Yellow Belly. First place: Yet again was Russell with five Bass and three catfish. “Well done everyone and especially to Russell, the comp winner. He tells us his secret is he’s been part of every fingerling

placed in the lake and kissed every one of them. “Mind you, the biggest fish of the day busted off my line then took Russell’s bait and the end result was a broken rod tip and broken fishing reel because the fish got away.” Gary said prior to the event a couple of juniors got in some practice off the jetty. “Jack Aspinall caught a nice 39cm Bass and his mate Aiden Weier a 37cm bass. Both were as proud as punch and it was worth the effort of getting out of bed at the sun rise. Jack used up all his luck as on comp day he caught one small Bass but still obtained a prize in the juniors. The club ended the day with their break up on Noosa River with family and friends sharing a “few coldies, nice food and lots of fishing stories”. “On behalf of our club we wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas, may 2021 be kinder to you all. “There are worse things you can do in life than sit beside or on Lake Macdonald with a fishing rod in your hands, enjoying the peace and quiet and great views,” Gary said.

New polo field and Polo Club on the Sunshine Coast

THERE is a new polo field and Polo club in Cooroy. International lawyer and investigator, Niall Coburn has built a polo field on his farm at Cooroy Mountain and formed a club that is part of the Queensland Polo Association. The polo field is on the family private farm. Niall told the Cooroy Rag it all came about because of his personal love of horses and playing polo and to encourage others. “I love horses and playing polo and had an idea to enhance my sport and share my enthusiasm with others and help younger people learn to play polo. It’s one of the oldest sports in the world going back centuries. I emphasise that this is country polo”. Niall said it was in Singapore that he had the vision for a polo field so with his wife Illy, he found property suitable and named it Noosa Country Polo. “I have worked internationally but maintained a house in Sunshine Beach for 25 years and I wanted to see if I could create the polo field on the Sunshine Coast.” Niall and his wife Illy found the property suitable to build Noosa Country Polo on

Tunba Court off Cooroy Mountain Road. Part of the old Dath Henderson farm, Niall built the polo field on the flat area where they used to grow corn for the cattle and has plans to move a century-old house from Moree to the property in the near future and renovating it. “We have the polo field and a practice field and when we have tournaments we have agistment for up to 60 horses in competitions. As a club of the Queensland Polo Association, under the Australian Polo Association, Niall said they opened just as the Gympie-Mary Valley Polo Club was closing down. Since making his vision a reality, Niall has hosted a very successful non-profit event, the Queensland Polo Championships in early October. “At the event in October, we had people attend to watch high-grade polo teams from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast and money raised went to Katie Rose Cottage. “Several local businesses sponsored the event including, BMW, Boiling Pot Brewery and Rolling Rock. And we employed people from the Cooroy area to help us with the

event. Niall has plans for a few events a year to bring the community of Cooroy together. “We want to host a two-day event in June and people come in and stay in accommodation in the area. “We want to make it a community event, where everyone is welcome and no one is left out. “We’re also planning a special season event at the end of September next year and hope to host a beginners’ match in the next few weeks.” In the meantime, the Noosa polo field is open for other clubs to come and use the field as guests and Niall is also breeding polo ponies from one of the renowned polo blood stock in Australia. “We’re breeding out of a stallion formerly owned by James Packer’s polo farm at Elliston and have three amazing foals. The birth of a new foal makes me so happy!” For more information visit: https:// noosacountrypolo.com/

Gym jumping into the next 25 years COOROY Gymnastics Club has celebrated 25 years in their training centre. From humble beginnings in the old Cooroy Showgrounds buildings in 1988, the Cooroy Gymnastics Club moved into their current centre on December 9, 1995 enabling the club to grow into what it has become today. Club spokesperson Craig Jones said before the new centre was built, club members trained in one of the old show buildings. “Described as not much more than a chicken shed by one of the original members, it was approximately five metres by 25 metres. The gymnasts trained with a beam and bar, and a floor area consisting of old mats over the hardwood floor. Despite the rather primitive conditions, gymnasts trained and improved their skills.” But in 1992, when the Cooroy Primary School was victorious in Division 3 of the 1992 Pacific School Games in Darwin where they represented Queensland, it was decided the gymnasts should have better training facilities. “The club started a plan to provide a muchimproved gymnastics club. Driven by the club’s committee, led by Helen Park and Glenn Thew work began. They worked hard on the grant process and getting support from Noosa Council which provided tenure of land at the show grounds and funding to support the State Government grant for the new building. “Most of the work was done locally and in many cases gratis to assist with the fledgling community club.” In under three years, the committee had been successful in designing, funding and building a gymnastics centre in Cooroy that would provide a home for the club into the future. Since the opening of the training centre, the club has grown to over 500 members annually and also provides classes for schools throughout the area.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas & a Great 2021 from all the team at Cooroy Auto Wreckers

“Once in the new facility, the gymnasts were able to quickly build their skills and results started to come in for the club.” In 2011, Jonah Harrison became the club’s first all-around State Champion with many to follow including Ashton Davis, Oscar Robinson, Flynn MacKeown, Mackenzie Jones, Monique Blackmore and Finlay Jones. “Cooroy was achieving regular success at a State level and in 2017 had its first success at Nationals with gymnast Kyle McCartney winning pommel at Level 10. Kyle achieved four medals at the 2017 Australian Championships including a third all-round and selection for the Australian Levels tour of New Zealand. More success followed at a national level with champion Finlay Jones winning five medals at Level 7, including three gold in 2018. “Following up in 2019, the club had two representatives Dean Chandler and Finlay Jones at Nationals making up a quarter of the Level 8 Queensland team. Finlay once again won the all-round division and winning another five medals. Due to his success at this National event, Finlay was selected for an international tour to the USA and was awarded the Queensland Mens Level athlete of 2019.” These recent successes are substantiation of the community’s foresight to invest in the local youth for the future. “The gymnastics club has truly grown from its humble beginnings. It has now been fitted outing upgraded continually with top-level equipment. Its floor and training facility feature much of the same apparatus used at Olympics and World Championships. It has become successful which is all due to the commitment of parents who have formed and run the committees and coaches who have delivered what the Cooroy community set out to achieve in the 80s.”

High Rollers V Business Bowls

IT is mentioned in “The History of The Club 1946-1996” compiled by Kennedy McGrath that the idea was formed by Bob Kerr over a cup of tea back in 1946 when it was thought Cooroy needed a different sport. Bob Kerr donated the land and with the help of volunteers except for a professional cabinet maker, the idea became a reality. So, on Thursday night at The Saw and Mill the club hosted the High Rollers V Business Bowls Challenge. Business Bowls is a collection of local business people who play at the club on a Wednesday night. High Rollers is a collection of people who love a game of social bowls at the same club. At the end of the year, Wednesday and Thursday nights come together for a challenge to finish the off the season. Both teams played for The Syd Kerr Memorial Trophy kindly donated by Graham, son of Syd and grandson of Bob back in 1997. It was a real pleasure to see the green

full with so many enthusiastic players. The laughter and bantering echoed around especially when the lights went out comments like “we need your high vis shirts” and “who turned the lights off” added fun to the night and in true Cooroy spirit, the game continued while the lights warmed up again. This year High Rollers won (go High Rollers) whoops not very impartial of me, sorry. The night finished with a great meal. Thank you Kim and Saw & Mill. Also, thanks go to the organisers Michael Loe of the Business Bowls and Maureen Bottomley and Roley Hassell from High Rollers and to all the teams who participated to make this a very enjoyable night. Cooroy Community Bowls Club is open to anyone who would like to play or learn the game of Lawn bowls. We are a very friendly club with members eager to pass on their skills in the game so if you are for it come along and have fun. See you on the green!

FOR a year that had all the initial hallmarks of a bumper season, that was then unlikely to go ahead at all and somehow finally got to kick off in July, the Noosa Pirates have managed to complete their epic 2020 season in fine form. Despite not having a Sunshine Coast Senior Rugby League competition, the Junior teams held the flag high fielding an amazing 18 teams in the Junior competition, that this year also included the Under 18 team. “To say that we are happy with the way the season turned out, is an understatement,” stated new Pirates incoming President Paul Dwyer. “Without the unbelievable commitment and support of players, parents, carers, coaches, managers, volunteers, sponsors and supporters, the ship simply would not have left the dock this season,’” he added. “Our community really backed us on this one and we are so grateful. It was great to see the kids most importantly having fun with friends, being active and participating in their chosen sport.” While registrations were understandably down this year (about 20%), response was great with the younger age divisions fielding two teams each. The club also enjoyed success in the older competitive age divisions with the Under 14 team making the Grand Final while the Under

16 team was crowned undefeated Premiers. The Under 18 team narrowly missed the Grand Final on points differential after an outstanding late season run. While the interrupted season played havoc with some planned upgrades at the Cooroy complex, new seating and shade sails are now in place that will no doubt improve the spectator experience at the much-loved spiritual home. “As one club now, we share our teams and events between the two towns and in 2021 we’re looking at the possibility of hosting a Senior league game fixture at Cooroy too which will be huge for the town. “Cooroy, is very much a part of our club DNA and we remain committed for the long term. I think our recent improvements and investment at the venue show that we’re here to stay,” finished President Dwyer. “With the 2020 season being pushed back into the year, the 2021 season will be upon us before it we know it, with a mid-March competition kick off scheduled for both Junior and Senior age divisions. To get on-board and play Rugby League with the mighty Noosa Pirates, you just need to go to https:// profile.mysideline.com.au/register/ clubsearch and type in ‘Noosa’. Go Pirates!”

COOROORA United Football Club Women’s team have secured the 2020 premiership, meaning back to back wins across two very successful seasons. The ladies started training way back in January with coach Ben Mander taking the reins but after round one, the global hiccup of COVID-19 stopped the season in its tracks. Fortunately for the wombabes, the silver lining was their 2019 coach Matt Dawson being sent home from living abroad and signed back on to work with Ben. A few extra players jumped on board and it proved to be a strong squad. Tough competition from Noosa, Kawana and Maleny throughout the season pushed the Cooroy girls and they were presented with the premiership trophy after their final match at Kawana. Over 100 goals and almost a perfect season Cooroora United are proud of their ladies team, the way they play the game and the way they represent the club and our town. Congratulations ladies you have again proven you can match it with the best on the Sunny Coast. Onwards and upwards 2021!
