What a difference a year makes

Not my fave
AFTER scooping up yet another pile of puppy poo from beneath my computer desk, this column just became a lot easier to write. I know exactly what is ‘not my fave’ … Gilbert, my untrained, hyperactive, sneaky, greedy, savings-sucking puppy. While the rest of family’s waistlines have steadily expanded over the holiday season, my puppy has had several visits to the vet to have his stomach pumped. It’s almost as though the article I ran in the last edition about what not to feed your pets became Gilly’s menu. The first vet visit came after being woken up in the middle of the night by a howling, drooling puppy wrapped in the plum pudding sack … that’s right folks, grapes and raisins, top of the toxic list. The second visit was when I found the packet of ratsak scattered over the lounge room rug. A week later I got out of bed in the morning to find him sitting in the lolly bowl on the kitchen table with chocolate M&Ms stuck to him like Velcro. He’s also managed to somehow chew up a packet of thyroid tablets (which are stored in the fridge, so that’s scary), destroyed every pair of underwear and socks we own and devoured entire rolls of toilet paper. His own numerous, and specially bought chew toys I find squirreled away in his doggy bed, all in pristine condition. I’m not saying he’s not adorable and we all love him dearly, but oh I wish Santa had bought me a kitten. So there you have it ... Puppies, plum puddings and poo, I really don’t like to say it out loud but ... Gilbert, not my fave! This time last year much of Queensland, including the Sunshine Coast hinterland, was battling torrential rain and flood waters. These school holidays we’ve had mostly sunny skies with temperatures in Cooroy last week reaching a scorching 35 degrees. Sophie and Abbie Talbot discovered the best way to cool off while out shopping with mum and dad was to sneak a quick splash at our local drinking fountain.

Did we learn anything, what have we to show? We had floods, cyclones and earthquakes all causing great loss, With Mother Nature letting us know, who is really the boss.

The usual rumours abounded, about Gillard and Rudd, And the unlovely sight of the politicians slinging mud. Oprah put a show on to tell the world of Australia, In spite of the cost, they admit it was a failure.

Obama came, and the Queen, and Will and wife Kate, But people with mortgages only watched that interest rate. Peter Slipper spent our money, but is now on a better wicket, And New Zealand played well, to beat us at cricket. Asylum seekers in boats were a major worry, While there were lots of arguments, about water in the Murray. Show biz and TV folk provided their share of scandal, And sporting icons were paid much more than they could handle. QANTAS fought the unions, grounded passengers really cranky, A Health Office executive arrested for some financial hanky panky. Tony Abbot kept saying “no”, kept shaking his head, Bob Brown kept preaching green, making Liberals see red. All this is now history, part of our yesterday. We shouldn’t let it interfere, with what we do today. This coming year’s story will probably resemble the one past, With the familiar plot, just some changes in the cast, Let us hope for peace and goodwill among the great powers, And be grateful that we live in the great country of ours. Shop Window Competition Winners THE Queensland Media Print Shop Window Trail was another great hit this year with 21 businesses entering and hundreds of the people voting on their favourite windows. Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy won the competition by a landslide and their window definitely deserved it as it was gorgeous. The Cooroy RSL came in at second place by a slight margin with many of the other windows hot on their heels in the vote tally. All of the windows were fantastic and hats off to our retailers for making Cooroy such a fantastic place to visit at Christmas.

Apex Park Upgrade AS you may be aware, on the 5th December 2011 stage 1 works started on the replacement of the existing playground fencing in Apex Park. These works were identified during a safety audit by Council playground inspectors and a recent community petition sent to Cr Brennan by Kate Rush as a possible solution to improve the playground facilities. Stage 1: • Removal and dispose old fencing • Extend fencing area to include all playground elements • Install new hardwood timber / heavy duty aluminium fencing panels (black) • Duration of works 5 - 7 days Stage 2, estimated start date mid to

Cooroy Community Group meeting THE Cooroy Community group’s steering committee has made much progress in forming a group in Cooroy and District. The steering group has finalised the reports and will place them before a public meeting set down for the 9th February 2012 at the CWA hall starting at 7 pm. THIS is an opportunity for our community to hear about Australia’s pathway to 100% renewable, sustainable energy explained in layman’s language. Dr Helen Fairweather, a Senior Lecturer with the University of Sunshine Coast, will be outlining Beyond Zero Emissions awardwinning research at the next Permaculture Noosa meeting, to be held on Thursday 19th January 2012. Beyond Zero Emissions is a not-for profit group of researchers and engineers who volunteer their time to produce a plan for replacing traditional power generation with 100% renewable energy. Their Stationary Energy Plan, produced in partnership with the University of Melbourne Energy Institute, has been endorsed by leading Australians, such as Professor Tim Flannery, Sir Gustav Nossal and Robin Batterham, AO. At the National Environmental Awards, this plan won the 2010 Mercedes-Benz award for Environmental Research, and BZE founder, Matthew Wright, was named Young Environmentalist of the year. The Stationery Energy Plan is a blueprint for a future free from climate-changing fossil fuels and environment damaging coal seam gas. The plan is fully costed, uses existing commercially available
technology and will provide baseload power. Come along and hear about the ideas which are already changing other economies, such as Spain and China. “We believe that people want information about how Australia can act in a timely and effective way to help arrest climate change,” says James Bramwell, Director from the independent research group, Beyond Zero Emissions. “Moreover there are some exciting opportunities for Australia to develop new industries and create new job opportunities in renewable power generation.” “Birth & Life in Cambodia” Dr Kirsten Small, is a qualified specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist, travelled to Cambodia in October 2011 and worked as a volunteer. Kirsten who is currently teaching at university and is involved with Nambour Community Garden and Transition Town Nambour, will be sharing some of her stories and photos with us. Permaculture Noosa meeting is FREE and open to the public. Beginning at 7pm with a Marketplace, the talks start at 7.30pm and supper (gold coin donation) will be served at 9pm. news Invest in information THE Cooroy Library is hosting a free session on Thursday February 23, from 10am to 11.15am, to help people move through the various phases of life with financial independence. The Investing with Safety session conducted by Centrelink will demonstrate how a few simple habits can put you in charge of your financial position. The session will cover a range of topics that include investment choices, investing with safety, global economy and investment impacts. Sunshine Coast Council’s Manager Libraries and Gallery Services, Ross Duncan said Libraries are pleased to partner with Centrelink who can offer investment advice to residents of the Sunshine Coast for free. “Smart investment decisions can be made when you have relevant, up to date and professional advice,” Mr Duncan said. Centrelink’s Financial Information Service Officer, Greg Barrie said that investing doesn’t have to be difficult. “With the right information and some professional advice, the options that suit your situation will become a lot clearer,” Mr Barrie said. news Get involved in The Paving Project @ Eumundi Markets SUNSHINE Coast locals and tourists alike have a chance to leave their mark on the world-famous Original Eumundi Markets when The Paving Project @ Eumundi markets kicks off today (January 18). ‘The Paving Project @ Eumundi Markets’ is a public art project involving the carving (each one unique) of unfired pavers that will be fired and laid within the market precinct. And you are all invited to take part! Market Manager Peter Homan says the project is funded through Sunshine Coast Regional Council’s Cultural Development Grants program. “We have engaged Sunshine Coast artist and ceramic teacher Michael Ciavarella to coordinate the workshops on market days,” Peter says. “Michael introduced the idea for the project after establishing similar projects at Woodford Folk Festival and in Cooroy. “This is a fabulous community arts opportunity for the town of Eumundi – a chance for members of the Eumundi community and the broader Sunshine Coast arts community, as well as stallholders, tourists and visitors to the market to become involved, and leave their mark on the
world-famous Eumundi Markets. Peter says participants will discover the project is inclusive, fun, easy-to-do, and appropriate for children and adults alike. “You do not need to have any ceramics or sculpting experience to take part – just plenty of enthusiasm and a desire to be part of something special,” says Peter. With appropriate instruction and carving/sculptural tools, members of the public will be able to easily decorate the pavers. The designs can be as complex as those carving wish them to be - but will be very effective if simple words or symbols are used. “Funding has enabled us to offer the opportunity to participate for FREE – so as not to preclude any members of our community from participating. “After its completion, we see the community artwork becoming a great reason for people to return to our town and marketplace again – to find their pavers laid in the pathways of Eumundi! Peter says the project also serves to improve the infrastructure in the market site – being a work of art that is functional (a useful paved zone) as well as decorative.

Regenerative work can perhaps be shared, but degenerative work must be delegated within or outsourced, otherwise it will detract from your more serious tasks. Because growth can be tough, some small businesses fail to achieve it and they either go out of business or they regress to their smaller operations. Often businesses fail because too many people start businesses for the wrong reasons, most of which relate to making more money or doing less work. The definition of winning is progress through struggle, and the greatest struggle for any small company is not external conditions, but internal motivation and commitment. Fishing It was around this time last year that I was arranging for a group of recreational fisherman to meet with the Minister, to discuss the proposed changes to Snapper fishing laws in Queensland. The subject of fishing is one that is close to the hearts of many on the Coast and it was recently put to me that we, as elected Members of Parliament, need to do more to protect our fish stocks for future generations to enjoy. Back when I was on Council, I donated my payment for sitting on the Caloundra and Maroochy Water Board to stocking our local dams and I am keen to continue to do what I can to ensure that future generations are able to enjoy this wonderful recreational pastime. One very keen fisherman suggested that the rules and regulations that we currently have in place are good enough, they just need to be enforced. He said that he thought the reason fisherman were not catching as many fish as they used to, was because some fisherman were taking fish that were too small and that the authorities should be policing this and not looking at ways to further restrict fishing areas. Put simply, he said that every fish should be allowed to grow big enough to breed and that way there would be plenty of fish. I would be interested in hearing the thoughts of other keen fisherman. You can say NO! I have been contacted by a resident who is concerned about the behaviour of door to door sales people from an electrical supply company. She said, the salesman wanted to see her electricity account and when she said no, he became quite pushy. If you are confronted by similar behaviour, you are within your rights to ask for the salesman’s name and to report them. Or simply say no, and shut the door. You can also do as this lady did, and contact my office and I will lodge a complaint on your behalf. Scams Our Parliamentary Services IT people recently advised my office of the latest email scam to come across their desks. This scam email is made to look like an official email from Telstra BigPond. The email scam advises of a problem with the account and asks readers to click on a hyperlink that will direct your PC to a bogus website where you PC may be infected. hopefully a male influence from Andrew)! We are all excited and can’t wait to see what comes. We would like to say a big thankyou to Vic Toonan our local Locksmith for all the work he has done on our Den over the holidays. Cooroy Rugby League field upgrade WORKS to improve the Cooroy Rugby League Field are on track to deliver a very high standard of playing field to the community by mid February 2012. The new surface material will provide exceptional ability to sustain the turf playing surface, drainage and longevity towards the use of the facility. They also have the added attraction of handcrafted lady beetles fused with Tina’s vessels and made by master hot flame blower, Wolfgang Engel. This renewed vigour has eventuated as Tina has had to reinvent herself since the closure of the last large scale glass blowing studio at Yandina in July 2010. She has been blowing her exquisite glass creations from a small but environmentally friendly studio in Noosaville called “Hot Stuff Studio”. This studio is owned and operated by fellow glass blower, Sean O’Donahue, formally of Waterford Crystal, so you now know the qual-
ity of the work he produces due to his past experience. He has created what Tina calls a “Zen Way Of Working” which has been hard for Tina to adjust to after the roaring sound of gas fired furnaces that she has been used to it the past. Here she works in the quite tranquillity of electric furnaces which are nearly noiseless in their operation. Together with the use of recycled glass and meticulous health and safety standards she now has entered the world of “Zen Glass Blowing” which she must admit tickles her fancy. EVERY year kids start school - and every year parents wonder what to do. Whether it’s your child’s first day at preschool or the start of fifth grade, there are always new challenges. Kids, as well as parents, often struggle with saying goodbye at the classroom door and hello to the start of a new year. Some kids will start the year off easily, breezing into the classroom with a quick goodbye - but after a few days (or even weeks) - cling as you try to leave. Others will enter the building only under protest from day one. Then there are
those who rush off to school with great enthusiasm but meltdown the instant you pick them up. Others may get stomachaches, or have difficulty falling asleep. Some may even experience going to school as a rejection, particularly if a younger sibling stays home with a parent or caregiver. These are challenging but frequent reactions to the start of school. All kids have a lot to adjust to when they are going to a new school or moving up to a new grade. To help you ease your kids into the school experience, try these practical strategies for getting off to a good start.
A little advance preparation can make the first week a lot easier. Here’s some helpful suggestions: Describe what will happen on the first day. Ask your child compelling questions. Meet kids in the class. Give children control over what they can control. For example, if you pick out a new backpack or lunchbox, let your child choose the
colour. Plan ahead how you will say goodbye. Get up early. Don’t talk about how much you will miss your child. Focus on fun. If your child gets upset, acknowledge the feeling and ask her for suggestions. Ask the teacher for help. Make a swift exit. Don’t be surprised if your child is upset at the end of the day, Kids of-
ten save up their hard feelings for the parents because it feels safer to let these feelings out at home than at school. You can even expect a surge in sibling rivalry or fighting with parents at home. Kids don’t usually come home and tell you ‘things got rough on the playground,’ but they may act out their feelings at home.

LATE last year we happily donated our time and money to enjoy a wonderful experience at Elephant stay, the Royal Elephant Kraal and Village in Ayutthaya, Thailand. It is a non profit organization built to give retiring elephants a safe and caring environment in which to retire and also to safe guard the future of the Asian elephant through a wonderful breeding program. The Kraal was home to over 90 elephants but with the recent floods devastating most of Ayutthaya, most have been moved to higher ground. Unfortunately 8 mother elephants and their 7 babies plus mahouts and their families are stranded by the rising flood waters on the walls of the Royal Elephant Kraal where only weeks ago we were playing. The most pressing need is to keep a food supply available for the elephants and their babies. Most of the rescue craft, understandably, are being used to ferry villagers and what little they

AS the weather warms and cane toads populate Cooroy gardens, veterinary experts are urging dog owners to be aware of the dangers the poisonous amphibians can pose to their pets. There has been a sharp rise in the number of dogs treated for toad poisoning recently and vets are warning pet owners this is a serious and widespread problem. Poisoning can have potentially fatal consequences for your pet. “When threatened, toads emit a milky, toxic secretion from glands behind their ears as a defence mechanism. The toxin is absorbed by a dog via the gums and eyes. Once the toxin is absorbed it will quickly make its way through their system. The high incidence of toad poisonings stemmed from the relatively easy way in which poisoning can occur. Many dogs are curious about cane toads
and will attempt to lick them or grab them in their mouths. Dog owners should act quickly once toad poisoning has occurred. Symptoms of toad poisoning can include drooling, foaming at the mouth, red gums, vomiting, heart rhythm abnormalities and convulsions. Swallowing the toad will cause the same signs with more severe vomiting or diarrhoea.” Pet owners should also repeatedly wash out the dog’s mouth and wipe the teeth and gums to remove any toxic remnants, but avoid using a hose as this may cause the dog to breathe in the water. A wet towel is a good option as pet owners can rinse and wipe repeatedly. If your dog has mouthed or swallowed a toad it is vital to seek immediate aid from a vet as the animal can die within 15 minutes of the poisoning occurring.

WHEN little Indi Fisher of Pomona celebrated her 2nd birthday, her invitations read ‘please make a donation in lieu of a present’. Mum said, “Instead of receiving presents from friends and family, we set up a donation box for money to go to charity. As we have had a few members of our family and close friends battling cancer, we chose to have a pink party (also Indi’s favourite colour). We held her party in the church hall in Pomona and around 30 people attended”. “In the months after Indi’s birthday, our very dear friend Isabelle came to stay at Katie Rose Cottage. Indi spent time with Isabelle at the Cottage and in her words “I love Isabelle’s new house”. The party was a huge success with donations on the day totalling $440 and Katie Rose Cottage in Doonan was very fortunate to be the recipient of the ‘takings’. COOROY RAG police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott WELL it’s been a very busy Christmas New Year period for Cooroy Police with the crime, domestic violence and traffic issues keeping us busy. Several burglary offences have occurred around town however I’m pleased to advise that a 16 year old local youth has been apprehended and dealt with by police for 11 of these offences. The quick apprehension of this youth was made possible by some very good police work utilising forensic evidence combined with excellent local knowledge that local police officers have developed over an extended period of time. Most of us here at the station have been stationed in Cooroy for lengthy periods of time and have become interwoven into the community so when an incident occurs it is just about assured that one of us will know the offender or at least know someone that does. Time and time again an offence occurs and some seemingly insignificant observation by someone links in with another small fact which then develops into hard evidence which then leads to an arrest. As an example, this latest incident was solved when an off duty officer saw the suspect in the vicinity of the burglary offence and it was only the fleeting recognition of a distinctive piece of jewellery that then led to the offender being identified and a Search Warrant being taken out and executed. Several Break and Enter offences at the High School have also been solved with the same 16 year old being dealt with over these incidents as well. The incidence of Domestic Violence continues to be of serious concern with police being called to a number of very volatile situations in the past month. In the worst of them an offender poured petrol over the interior of a house and set fire to a bed and it was a real miracle that the house did not explode with people inside with the house being filled with petrol fumes. A 31 year old man was arrested by police and charged with several serious criminal and domestic violence offences. With the serious financial stress that most family units are under combined with family get togethers over Christmas and New Year the potential for serious Domestic Violence has increased. Hot weather and the increased consumption of alcohol are also triggers for this type of behaviour. help lines can stop a serious incident occurring when a minor issue leads to a brain snap with the consequences being police intervention and serious Criminal and Domestic Violence charges. Drink Driving continues to be high on the agenda for police. Cooroy police apprehended four drink drivers over the Christmas New Year Period which was disappointing considering that our apprehension rates had been on the decline in the months leading up to Christmas. When RBT rates are up and the apprehension rates down this shows that the message is getting through with people heeding the warning given every day through the media and through the very visible presence of police on our roads. I struggle to comprehend why people risk there licenses and possibly there livelihoods by risking driving when they have been drinking. I hope to report next month that no drink drivers were apprehended for the month of January and February. I read an interesting letter to the editor in the Courier Mail recently where a lady was berating police for issuing infringement notices to people who were failing to stop at a stop sign that she felt shouldn’t be there in the first place. The lady obviously felt very strongly about the issue as she went to the trouble of writing into the paper and expressed very strong opinions on the issue. I noted with interest that she admitted to not stopping at the stop sign as it was in her opinion not needed. Everyone deserves an opinion and deserves to be heard so my issue is not with her opinion but rather the fact that she seems to have missed the point that driving is all about attitude. An attitude to drive safely and to obey the road rules at all time and not just when it suits you. To my way of thinking it’s a very simple thing to do when confronted with a stop sign. Stop. Yes, stop means stop. If a driver can’t abide by this very basic of road safety rule then I have to wonder what other road rules are just too hard to abide by. Unfortunately, the most proven way to change people’s attitude to driving is by enforcement and monetary fines. The TV ads and newspaper warnings and news stories are all great but the real deterrent is the fear of a fine. I know that some of you will have your blood pressure rising when you read this and I can hear the comments of “It’s nothing but revenue raising” but the simple way to avoid fines is to change your attitude to driving (ie: near enough is good enough) and obey the road rules.

NOW we’re into 2012, it may be timely to look back on the last year – 2011. There were some lessons learned from some of the major events we encountered, with the most significant being the floods here in the southern part of the State; and Cyclone Yasi in the north. Enquiries into the floods have made important recommendations which affect our operations and how we assist everyone in the community. The cyclone is a reminder of the preparations that need to be made when facing all types of events from the smallest storm to the biggest cyclonic. In many cases, people forget too quickly the impact of these events and what they need to do to prepare themselves. We have been told to advise the community, and this is being reinforced in the media, that people need to be self sufficient for 72 hours. The Victorian SES recently received over 2000 requests for assistance during one severe storm event alone, and as you can imagine, it can take many days for a team of volunteers, to investigate, evaluate and attend to this amount of damage. Our usual tips for storm season include: check and clean gutters; keep yards clear of loose items; ensure house numbers are visible, particularly at night, so we can find you if you need help; keep pets in a secure, safe place. You can keep a watch on the Gympie weather radar map by visiting http://mirror.bom.gov.au/ products/IDR082.loop.shtml on the internet. And don’t forget your emergency survival pack which should be kept ready and should contain a torch with extra batteries, a battery operated radio, fresh water, and some non perishable food. We have been fairly quiet on the road, with fewer requests for us to attend motor vehicle accidents. However, on New Year’s Day morning we were all woken quite early with pagers going off with a request to attend the first of the year on the Bruce Highway. Fortunately there were no serious injuries suffered by occupants of the vehicles, but not a good start to the year. Looking forward to 2012, we hope it will be a less eventful year from a weather point of view and that motor vehicles accidents will continue to stay lower. news Don’t forget to set some New Year’s money resolutions THE New Year is a time when people tend to reflect on the changes they’d like to make in their lives. If you’re keen to get on top of your finances, here are 10 things people can do, regardless of their income levels, to improve their financial wellbeing in 2012. Top 10 New Year money resolutions: 1. Start with a budget: It’s essential to have a household budget and stick to it. If you spend more than you earn, it can quickly land you on the rollercoaster of debt. Make a promise to start living within your means. 2. Differentiate between ‘wants’ and ‘needs’: Don’t be too hard on yourself, but do you really need the $100 per month pay TV package? You probably don’t watch half the programs. Cars are big traps too. It’s nice to drive the latest and greatest, but don’t live for your car. Be sensible. 3. Shop smart: Look for ways to reduce your spending such as taking your own lunch to work, cutting back on take-away dinners, car pooling and planning meals to avoid waste.. 4. Use credit cards wisely: Credit card debt is fine if you pay it off each month before interest is incurred. But if you have a large amount of debt sitting on your card, it could be costing you an astronomical amount in interest each year. Interest rates on credit cards are sometimes as high as 20 per cent or more, so it’s important to pay off this kind of debt as fast as possible. To do that you will need to make more than the minimum repayments each month. If you have several cards maxed-out, consider rolling all the debt in to one low interest-bearing card to save on interest. Once you have finally paid the card off, cut it up and switch to a debit card if you have to. 5. Have an emergency fund: As a contingency for life’s unexpected expenses, it’s vital to have an emergency fund or access to cash through a mortgage redraw facility or offset account. A good rule of thumb is to have at least three months salary in the kitty. 6. Get savvy with your super: Australians are losing around $1 billion a year in fees, lost payments and earnings by holding several super accounts they aren’t contributing to (Rice Warner Actuaries 2008). amp.com.au/consolidate, or by calling 133 888. Also consider topping up your superannuation by salary sacrificing another two to five per cent of your income, depending on how much you can afford. Lower income earners should also make the most of the government co-contribution scheme. 7. Review your mortgage: The most effective way to save interest on your home loan is to make extra repayments each month. People can also attack their loan faster by paying fortnightly instead of monthly and making lump sum repayments whenever they can. 8. Have a debt strategy: Financial worries can be very stressful, so it is important for people to take control of their debt before it starts controlling them. The general rule of thumb is to pay off ‘bad’ debt like credit cards first as they usually have the highest interest rates. 9. Protect your family: It’s not something we want to think about, but you need to ask yourself how your family would cope financially if you or your partner were injured in an accident, became too sick to work, or even worse, passed away. These days, insurance doesn’t have to be a big drain on the budget. If cash flow is tight, you can get affordable life insurance and income protection through your superannuation. 10. Save for the future: While most people are pretty good at saving for short-term goals such as end of year holidays, they often forget to put money aside for the future. Make sure you have a savings plan for medium-term goals such as a deposit on your first home and longer term milestones, like retirement funding and the kid’s education. When it comes to a Cooroy country wedding, it is hard to beat this one. Local couple Nathan Marriott and Kelly Rixon have known each other since they were a couple of kids in diapers. On Saturday 7 th January, they exchanged wedding vows at Nathan’s parents (Gary and Karen Marriott), stunning Cooroy Mountain Road property, affectionately known as ‘The Willy Nilly Ranch’. Traditional pad Thai noodles with banana prawns DHOM’S Kitchen opened its doors in Cooroy almost nine months ago. Its operators, Dhom Chotipimai and Spencer Willmott (both ex Pinto Thai) are delighted with the response to date. “We started off as a
deli-cafe, opening just a couple of nights a week. We quickly realised that there was more demand than anticipated for our traditional home-style Central Thai Cuisine,” says Dhom. “We are now open five nights for dinner and two days
for lunch”. Dhom’s Kitchen is inspired by the many small restaurants seen across Thailand that describe themselves as ‘Hong Aharn’ or ‘Little Restaurant’, similar to a French Bistro. These family run restaurants produce simple home cooking using quality ingredients. Dhom and Spencer are committed to using as much local produce as possible. Through their time at the Noosa Farmers Market they have established valuable relationships with many of the producers at the market. They have also established a small market garden to supply their restaurant. “At the moment we are harvesting wild ginger, holy basil, betel leaves, snake beans, choko tips and round Thai eggplant,” says Spencer. “All these go into our daily specials. In the coming weeks we are looking forward to wing beans, long green eggplant, Thai guavas and green papaya.” Dhoms Kitchen only uses Australian seafood. “We are fortunate to have Jason and Alison
(another friendship forged through the Noosa Farmer ’s Markets) from Spanner Crabs Noosa to look after our seafood needs.” At Dhoms Kitchen all their curry pastes, sauces and marinades are hand made on the premises. They also make a range of frozen curry sauces and curries and delicious snacks which are available for sale from their restaurant. By the way, Dhom’s Kitchen does not have a microwave! YOUNG Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions are being urged to come together to embrace and showcase their culture via song writing and recording, hip-hop dancing and art workshops based on the theme of identity. The workshops, known as Sounds Like me, are being run by United Synergies in partnership with local Indigenous creative artists, and will culminate in performances at the annual Booin Gari Festival, to be held on Tuesday, April 3. The festival is a celebration of the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Sunshine and Cooloola Coast region. Program coordinator Leanne Milmlow said in order to connect with culture and the local area, the young people would kick off the series of workshops by participating in a cultural landscape tour– concluding the day with a bush tucker meal with mentors, artists and United Synergies staff.
Some of the young people from Cooroy who performed at our AGM in November. The hip hop workshops will be held by the same organisation. This would allow the young people to get to know each other and allow the mentoring and support to begin - underpinning the success of the project, Leanne said. Three workshops are planned, with participants able to select one, two or all three workshops. Workshop 1 –Song writing and recording facilitated by De Greer-

THE Pomona Walk for Heart group, the Pomona Pacers, held their Moon Walk and Christmas breakup on 13 December 2011. The group made a presentation to Faye Patrick who is standing down as leader after more than 12 months of dedicated leadership. Faye and Ellen Leape (our most consistent walker) were also presented with 2011 Queensland Walking Champion Awards from the Heart Foundation for their commitment to the walking program. The Pomona Pacers meet every week-day morning in front of the Pomona Community House at 6.30 am during summer. We claim to be one of the most active groups on the Sunshine Coast as most other groups walk one or two days a week. There is no obligation to walk every day and we can have anywhere from three to eight members walking on any one day. Paddle the beautiful Upper Mary River THIS school holidays why not make the most of the wonderful weather and get a group of friends together and make the most of our beautiful Mary River by taking a kayak trip. The trip from Walker bridge down to Vic Olsen bridge at Tuchekoi, is a paddle of approximately four and a half hours. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the shade of the overhanging natives along the way. There are a few rapids to negotiate along the way so keep paddling in order to keep your kayak going straight! The river is a peaceful place with large lillypillys, ficus and she oaks overhanging parts of the river and providing shade. You’ll often be escorted by bright blue sa-
cred kingfishers that dart from tree to tree along the waterway and the occasional group of wild ducks. Eagles soar overhead, mullet splash in the water and water dragons scuttle up logs for a quick escape. You might even be lucky enough to spy a platypus. Another magnificent paddle is from Pickering bridge, closer to Kenilworth, down through huge rainforest trees, ficus and lillypillys to the old timber Walker bridge. This is about a three hour paddle, maybe shorter if you don’t spend so much time gazing at the magnificent specimens of trees along the riverbanks that managed to withstand the high flood waters of last year. You’ll see much wildlife as you glide
past, maybe a lungfish, jumping mullet, ducks, kingfishers, turtles and water lizards. It’s very evident that where the river bank had old established trees, less detrimental erosion had occurred, less banks washed away. So folks get out and enjoy our beautiful river. Get a group of friends, choose a get in spot, and a destination, maybe a car shuffle to retrieve your car and kayaks. Choose a trip that suits your fitness and capability. If you don’t own a kayak you can always hire one from Ride the Mary, a local business who will drop you to a location and collect you as arranged. A wonderful way to get some exercise and enjoy the natural beauty around us.

WHEN a large quiet river passes through a narrow gorge the turbulence of the water causes greater noise. The same principle applies to air passing through our nose and throat down into our lungs. The narrower the air passage is then the more noise, in the form of snoring, which is generated. Isn’t this just a problem for adults? Well, actually snoring in children is relatively common. About 10-20% of kids snore. So what? Well, the main potential problem with snoring is that the air passage narrows so much that breathing can actually stop. This might last for just a few seconds, after which the child wakes up, the muscles of the airway regain their tone and the passage opens and breathing resumes. This is called obstructive sleep apnoea. This is most common in kids between the ages of 2 and 7 when their tonsils and adenoids are large and more likely to cause airway blockage. So although 10-20% of kids snore only about 2% may have sleep apnoea. Waking up continually in your sleep tends to disrupt the quality of deep restoring sleep and we know how much our kids need a good sleep. The kid with sleep apnoea may wake up in the morning, after having spent a disturbed night snoring heavily, and feel tired and might sleep excessively during the day. They may sound quite nasal due to their blocked adenoids at the back of the nose; they may have recurrent tonsillitis due to their large tonsils; they may have bad hearing as the Eustachian tube from the middle ear to the back of the throat is blocked and fluid accumulates in the middle ear. They might have poor concentration and attention and other behavioural issues due to their chronic sleep deprivation. What can be done about it? Well if the child is significantly overweight then weight loss is important. If nasal congestion caused by hay fever is contributing then nasal sprays can settle this. However removal of tonsils and/or adenoids generally cures the problem in about 90% of kids. If you feel your child might be affected by significant habitual snoring or sleep apnoea contact your local doctor for an assessment. Kids who sleep well help adults to sleep well. WELL the end of school holidays are nearly upon us and as parents we are busily getting the kids prepared for school. Now is the time to ensure that your kids are prepared with the right equipment for their young bodies. Ill-fitting backpacks and poor footwear are the cause of many aches and pains in school-aged children. When buying school bags, take into consideration the size of the child and the weight that is going to be carried in the bag. Children should not be using bags that are slung over their shoulder, resulting in a leaning to one side. Back pain and muscle imbalances are commonly caused by carrying bags on one shoulder only. Small children should not have large backpacks that weigh them down. The straps of the backpack should be adjustable to allow the pack to sit snugly against the spine. Heavy loads should be place in the back of the backpack where the load is closest to the spine, minimising the strain placed on the spine. If you are unsure about your child’s backpack, talk to a health professional who can recommend particular brands. School shoes are also being purchases frantically at this time of year. Try and talk your kids out of wearing trendy skate-type shoes, as often these have no arch support, no cushioning and poor heel support. Invest in a good pair of shoes and have them fitted correctly to ensure that there is some room for growth. Many brands include a couple of pairs of inner-soles to ensure a correct fit and also allow for some growth of the foot. To this end, Cooroora is looking to sign up more talented and enthusiastic senior players to join the very competitive 1st and Reserves team for the 2012 season. Cooroora United Football Club made the move from Wide Bay Soccer in 2012 and now competiting at a significantly higher level in the Sunshine Coast Competition, which also offers the benefits of television exposure for all players and sponsors. Although the initial club callout is for Senior players (senior men’s training to begin early January) the club, through the Junior and Senior Directors of Coaching , encourages all players of all levels and experience (other teams training to begin mid to end of February). Make a ‘Mark’ with Impact IMPACT Boxing Academy has opened its doors again this week to prepare for another great year of competition & fitness training in general. The renovations are now complete giving the gym the added space that it needed to cope with its continual growth. The gym’s facilities include a weight training area, a competition size boxing ring, a boxing bag & cardio area, a sauna & a huge outdoor deck area for some fresh air cardio workouts. All though the Impact Boxing Academy is predominately a competitive boxing club that trains amateur & Professional boxers it also caters to those that are purely interested in their general fitness & well being. “These participants are basically trained very similar to the boxers. The training involves strength & conditioning work along with hi cardio & skill work. We target the whole body & cardiovascular system. Basically it is a total body work out. A lot of the fighters that we

This is a great chance for anyone interested in playing tennis to have a go. Suitable footwear required. Balls provided and we will have some spare racquets available for use by anyone who needs one. Join us for mixed social tennis on Sunday 6 February at 3pm. Balls provided and cost is $2 for members and $5 for non members.
