Clinton is swimming in medals CLINTON Stanley swam the race of his life to win Gold and take out the title of 1500m World Champion at the 5 th World Down Syndrome Swimming Championships in Taiwan smashing his PB by 36 seconds with a time of 23.18.64. A gutsy swim considering he was nearly withdrawn from the race due to illness. This outstanding achievement caps off what has been a long and successful swimming career for this dedicated, quiet achiever. Clinton has been competing in the pool for 17 years and at 34 shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, he is just getting better and better. He set many personal best times in the lead up to this event, winning 11 medals in international competition before advancing into the World Competition (finals) winning another 8 World Medals, 4 Gold, 3 Silver, 1 Bronze and setting two World Records. This was Clinton’s 6th time wearing the Green and Gold representing Australia. Over his swimming career he has won 38 World Medals 13 National Medals 72 State Medals and 42 Down Syndrome World Records in various strokes and distances. He has competed in Special Olympics for Ten Pin Bowling also Golf at State level and Swimming and Tennis at National level.

How you can help the flood victims OUR hearts go out to the thousands of families affected by one of the worst floods in Queensland’s history. WHEN he isn’t working, competing or training he loves watching sport on TV, Clinton works part time at Wimmers in Cooroy and is a volunteer life safer at Sunshine Beach SLSC and Noosa Aquatic Centre. Clinton’s mother, and Australian Team Manager, Sue Stanley, said Clinton was determined to win in Taiwan and is understandably brimming with pride at her son’s accomplishments. “He put in so much work training at Noosa with coach Ian Robinson and during the race remembered to pace himself and stay focused,” said Sue. “I felt so proud of him as I watched him step onto the podium. He looked so happy receiving his beautiful glass medal, bear and flowers. It was his time to shine, watching the raising of the flags and listening to the National Anthem being played for him and Australia. Australian Head Coach, Ross Sanderson, said it was the best swim he had seen Clinton do.” Clinton has been nominated for the Sunshine Coast Sports Award and will attend the dinner with his family later this month at the Hyatt Regency. The Australian team came home victorious emulating what they did two years ago in Portugal. They are World Champions for the second time. “I cannot put into words how proud and honoured I felt to be part of this fantastic team. It was amazing how well Australia did at the World Championships considering having 12 hour days at the pool. It was certainly their fitness and preparation for the event that got them through,” said Sue. Clinton would like to thank his many supporters and those who sent Herograms while he was overseas. The next World Championships will be held in Italy in 2012. Clinton has resumed training in his quest for selection later this year. The Down Syndrome Down Under Swimming Organisation will be holding its Inaugural National Short Course Championships at Noosa this September for swimmers with Down syndrome; hopefully this will be the start of great things for swimmers with Down syndrome.

Goodbye old year, and take your weather with you! The old year has passed, and what a year it has been, With weather contradictions the like we’ve rarely seen. First we have a drought, and then a drenching flood, A land of dust, which soon became a land of clinging mud. Most of Central Queensland was totally inundated, With townships isolated, and whole communities evacuated. Then it all moved South, and flooded many of our towns, Bundaberg, Maryborough, Gympie, Brisbane, the Darling Downs. Toowoomba’s tsunami-like flash flood was a totally tragic event, A disaster which sadly, was impossible to prevent. Afterwards will come the clean-up, revealing the human tragedy, the cost, The despair of funding your business, your home, a lifetime of treasures lost. There is money for relief, of course, but this fact must be faced, Many lost treasures bear memories, and these cannot be replaced. How can you put a value, on photographs of yesteryear, Of beloved Dad or Nana, of others you hold dear. Of prizes of school achievements, or letters from a loved one, Of trophies that in contests past, have been so proudly won. Those wonderful people of the SES, and the ambos, and the police, Gave assistance in case of need, as they saw help calls increase. Some motorists crossed flooded causeways, although they were told they shouldn’t, But happily most drivers took the advice, and very wisely wouldn’t. While someone dives into a raging river, just to have a thoughtless swim, Then needing some volunteer’s rescue, at the risk of his life and limb. The government brought in water restrictions, when dams were running dry, Now the dams are overflowing, and flood levels are getting high! It was decided to build another dam, to help in times of drought, But the locals really got up in arms, so they threw that project out! They built an expensive desal plant, then discovered there’s not really any need, (Don’t you worry about the cost, that’s only political chicken feed!) But the scale of this disaster is impossible to conceive, Many of the stories we are hearing are difficult to believe. The crisis is not over yet, it will continue for weeks ahead, And the areas which are affected are unbelievably widespread. Our hopes and hearts go out to those, the victims of this devastation, It’s a disaster we must face as individuals, but more importantly, as a nation. Jim Dunstan

COOROY RAG

Cooroy’s community spirit lights up COOROY has a special community spirit that enables special things to happen that don’t happen in many other towns. And perhaps one of the biggest examples of this is the decorating of Cooroy at Christmas time. This year the decorations were the best yet and the town had an amazing festive feel. The Christmas decorations that adorned the streets and rooftops took months of planning and were designed by Danielle Taylor of Firefly Solutions with a team of approximately 25 volunteers putting them up. The decorations were funded by a variety of businesses, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and Sunshine Coast Regional Council through the grants program. Ricon Contractors’ designed, purchased and installed the decorations on our beautiful Christmas tree which is the centre point of our decorations. They do a fantastic job and our tree is the envy of many other towns on the Sunshine Coast. Ritek Building Solutions sponsored the roundabout decorations; Melco Lanhams

Mitre 10, Bone Lawyers, Town & Country Home Rentals, Bendigo Bank, Luke’s Supa IGA and Guardian Pharmacy sponsored the rooftop decorations; and Cooroy Chamber funded the street decorations and promotions with assistance from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council grants program. There were also 22 shops in town that entered the Shop Window Trail. Tracy Vecchio created the gorgeous costumed possums which adorned each window. The best windows were chosen by People’s Choice and hundreds of entry forms were received from people across the Coast that had come to see the town decorations and experience the festive spirit of Cooroy. “The Shop Window Trail was a really popular component of Christmas in Cooroy this year. We received very positive feedback. All of the windows were fantastic and the competition was very fierce this year. ‘Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy’ won the best window and second went to ‘It’s a Fashion Thing’. They both win

Queensland Media Print vouchers and bragging rights for the rest of the year! And the winner of the lucky draw for the $100 Cooroy IGA voucher was Chloe Buckland from Cooroy,” said event manager, Danielle Taylor. A big thank you must go to everyone who contributed to making the spirit of Christmas come alive in Cooroy. The removal of the Christmas decorations has been delayed due to the weather, but once it fines up volunteers will be needed and very much appreciated. Also, there will be a planning meeting in January to discuss the outcomes of the 2010 event and commence planning for 2011 Christmas in Cooroy. The meeting is open to anyone interested and details will be available on www.christmasincooroy.com.au. If you’d like to help take down the decorations or have more information about the planning meeting you can register on the website or contact Danielle Taylor on advertising@cooroy.com.au or phone 0403 023 802.

Experiencing brown outs in your area? Energy harvesting may be the answer REDUCING electricity consumption in our homes and harvesting the suns light with a solar system is a win win situation for all. Because coal fired power stations have a reduced demand of electricity generation feeding the national grid. You get paid for excess solar electricity generated feeding the grid, thus supporting the community power supply by limiting low voltages known as brown outs. The environment is saved by reducing our carbon footprint with less CO2 polluting emissions from the power stations. Specialising now in this exciting field “Renewable Energy” is Ecoast Energy - a

COOROY RAG Letter to the editor I WELCOME the Liberal National Party’s new found interest in the Bruce Highway (December 2010, page 7). But the six LNP politicians which have come together to “lobby” for extra funding either have no shame or are suffering from collective amnesia. As much as they would like to rewrite history half of them – Truss, Entsch and Neville – were members of the former Howard Government which had 12 years to take action and failed. Mr Truss was even the Transport Minister! Worst still, they starved the Bruce Highway of much-needed funding at the very time record tax revenues were flowing into the Treasury due to the previous mining boom. Federal Labor knows what needs to be done. That’s why we’ve already quadrupled spending on the Bruce Highway. Indeed, whereas our predeces-

sors spent $1.2 billion over twelve years on this road, Federal Labor is spending $2.6 billion over just six years – more than twice as much in the half the time. As a result, hundreds of workers are currently onsite upgrading and rebuilding 158 kilometres of the Bruce Highway. Had the LNP made a similar financial commitment to ours during their 12 years in office, the Bruce Highway would today be a much better, safer road. While our progress over the last three years has been substantial, we’ve always said it was going to take more than one or two parliamentary terms to put right more than a decade of neglect. It will require both sustained investment as well as proper long term planning. The Gillard Labor Government will continue to deliver both. BRICKBATS to those who park their cars on the road in Wattle Street opposite the shopping complex. It makes it such a tight squeeze for traffic and I’m sure it won’t be long before a vehicle is sideswiped. It’d be a lot better if you parked up on the footpath a bit. BRICKBATS to the resident on Ponderosa Drive who lives directly behind The Plantation. You may have a beef with the venue, but the couples choosing to marry there are the innocent party. To intentionally begin playing the bagpipes (badly) then yelling abuse the precise moment the bride begins her walk down the aisle...does nothing for your cause. If your objective was to ruin this young woman’s wedding day by having her in tears the moment her ceremony started because of your noise pollution, then good on you. May Karma greet you and your bagpipes eye to eye one day and have you realise the enormity of your thoughtless actions on a day this couple will never have again. BRICKBAT to the video shop who charged late fees for DVD’s due back Sunday when roads were closed around Cooroy during flash flooding and there was no possible way of returning them on time ... very un-Australian! BRICKBATS to the people who left their dogs on their own for a week over Christmas. With all the rain we had they did not have enough shelter. Shame on you, you know who you are. BOUQUET to Cooroy, the township with Christmas heart. Thank you Cooroy for the wonderful decorations we appreciated on a day in Cooroy. A lot of work and love went into every niche - the new library and decorated light poles and festive centrepiece tree at the roundabouts. In fac, the whole township sparkled with Christmas spirit and many smiling faces adding to the festive goodwill! BOUQUET Birthday wishes to Fiona Hutchings at Bendigo Bank. In our community it starts with

Budgeting Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy THE word is “budget” is often enough to make people instantly stop reading; however a budget can be a valuable tool in managing your finances and planning for the future. If you don’t already have a budget how about doing up a new budget for the New Year? The first step is to work out your income, including your regular pay (use the take home amount) along with any extras you may receive such as interest on investments, rental income or government allowances. Many budgets work on a monthly basis however I prefer to work in the same cycle as my payday which is fortnightly. Maybe (just for fun) you could prepare one of each and then see which feels best. Now gather up all of your bank statements, utility accounts (electricity, water, rates and gas), bills, and rego papers, to provide as much information as possible about your regular expenses. List all of your expenses, separating them into fixed and variable categories. Fixed items include things such as rent or mortgage payments, loan repayments or school fees. Variable expenses can include phone bills (depending on your plan) groceries, clothes, entertainment costs and medical expenses. Don’t forget to include the big expenses that might happen only once or twice a year, such as rates or rego, and it also helps to add a percentage as a buffer to allow for increases in costs or unexpected expenses. After totalling up these figures, you will then need to divide this amount into the same timeframe you have used for you income, monthly, fortnightly or weekly. Now compare the two figures. Hopefully your income column is higher than your expenses, although you may find that it is not. If this is the case, you have two options – one, earn more money (often easier said than

done) or two, you are going to have to review your expenditure and try to start reducing your outgoings. Some easy things to think about are taking your lunch to work rather than buying it everyday, cutting down on the number of takeaway coffees you purchase, planning your meals in advance and grocery shopping less often to avoid impulse purchases, and make sure you only buy something if you have the cash rather than automatically reaching for the credit card. Once you have your income exceeding your expenses, it is important that you review and tweak your budget regularly. It is also a good plan to set up some separate accounts into which you can put aside funds to cover your usual expenses, while at the same time saving for the big irregular items mentioned above. Now you will be in a position to plan for the future with your spare funds, by using them to pay off any debt, starting with the highest interest debt first, and maintaining your minimum monthly payments on the rest. Once that is paid, close the account and start paying all the excess into the next highest interest debt, and when they are all finished you can start saving with a feeling of relief. To talk more about budgeting or any other banking matter, please call into the branch or call me on 5447 7131. You can also email me at fiona.hutchings@bendigobank.com.au.

Auto parts business aims to be indespensable

Terry Gladwood and Terry Hall at their new Automate Spares Premises in Jarrah Street FOLLOWING the successful launch last year of his mobile auto parts business, AutoMate Spares, Terry Hall has set up a permanent shopfront in Jarrah Street, Cooroy. Terry, and his offsider Terry Gladwood (Tezza), both have over 20 years’ experience in the automotive industry. These blokes know their stuff and to many busy mechanical businesses and people who rely on having their machinery and equipment back in operation as fast as possible, this knowledge is worth its weight in gold. “Our aim is to give customers fast, efficient and reliable service at competitive prices,” says Terry. “At this stage we are steadily increasing our stock holding and although the recent flooding has slowed us down a bit, once that situation eases up we can usually guarantee that what we don’t have in stock we can get same day or overnight delivery. After working for other businesses for so many years, Terry and Tezza are extremely keen to focus their energy and experience into their own business and are both enthusiastic about the support they have already received from locals. “We are both locals ourselves. We know what the area and industry requires and are confident that once word gets out it’ll be full steam ahead,” said Terry. AutoMate Spares stocks parts for cars, light trucks, light earthmoving equipment and speciality equipment. They are also distributors for Prolube and Penrite oils, Super Charge Batteries, Fulcrum Suspension and agents for Bearing Service. You’ll find AutoMate Spares and ‘The Indespensables’ at Shop 2/1 Jarrah Street, Cooroy or phone them on 5442 6890.

Did you get a pet for Christmas? OWNING a new puppy or kitten is a wonderful pleasure. Whether you get your new pet from a breeder or a welfare organisation, they should have had their first vaccination and worming treatment and now the law is that they must be microchipped. Make sure you receive the microchip papers which will have your pet’s unique number. All puppies need to be wormed every two weeks until three months of age then every month until six months old, then every three months for the rest of their life. Kittens are wormed every two weeks until three months old, then every three months for the rest of their lives. If puppies and kittens are not wormed their lives could be in danger as they can become anaemic, so worming is essential. The other important veterinary care is vaccination. It is most important that all puppies and kittens are vaccinated. Consult your veterinar-

ian for the correct regime best suited for your puppy or kitten. House training need not be difficult. Take your puppy to the same place in the garden as soon as it wakes up, after each meal, last thing before you go to bed, and whenever you see it sniffing around. Praise your puppy when he/she gets it right. Never punish your puppy if accidents occur. Good food is essential for puppies and kittens assisting with strong bones, healthy teeth, and muscle develop-

ment. For long haired puppies and kittens start brushing them as soon as you bring them home. A few minutes a day to start then slowly increase. Your puppy should enjoy being brushed. Allow plenty of time to play with your puppy or kitten as human interaction on a regular basis is important. Enjoy your new puppy or kitten for many years. Celebrating 50 years

COOROY RAG

This year, the Cooroy Rag celebrates its 50th birthday and in recognition of this milestone we though it appropriate to feature some snippets of the past. We’ll be setting aside space in each edition for the rest of the year so if you have any old Cooroy Rags stashed away we’d love to have a look at them. Please call in to the office or phone us on 5442 6699.

The history of the Cooroy Rag as we know it: THE Cooroy Rag was first published on April 28, 1961 by the Connolly family, who owned a real estate agency in Maple Street and were looking for a more efficient way to advertise. It was issued every Wednesday and was a simple roneoed format of six or eight foolscap pages with advertising for business houses, forthcoming events, social activities and items of interest which had happened in the town and district. Although these days the format has been modernised, the content remains virtually unchanged. When Mr Connolly Snr became ill, the real estate business was sold to Mr and Mrs Colin Duke and the Connollys continued the publication of the paper from their residence with the assistance of the Dukes, who became the collection

agency for items of submission. This continued until December 1968 when the paper was offered for sale and publication ceased. Living out of town was one, in her words, was one very naïve farmer’s wife who didn’t like picking beans. Even though Edna Smith had no publishing experience, had never used a duplicator or seen a stencil, she knew how to type and decided it would be a far more interesting project than bending over boringly picking beans. Even though she had four children and an aged

father living away, Edna says she had a wonderful husband who agreed to the proposal that owning a newspaper might by okay. “Little did he know how much future aid he would be giving me,” laughs Edna. “My first issue was was not the great achievement I had hoped. You could hardly see the headline, no one told me you needed a hard surface under the stencil and I’d never used a scribe or lettering guides before. Things could only improve.”

In those days people paid 40 cents for a yearly subscription. This paid for the delivery boys who delivered the papers to the town mailboxes. Cream carriers delivered them to the farm areas for free, while others collected their copy from the estate agency. In February 1969 Edna resumed the publication of The Cooroy Rag with the help of Mrs Connolly and the Dukes. In August 1970 Edna sold the paper to Mrs Donna Lomas who was thrilled to have the opportunity of improving the publication with younger ideas. However, sadly she had an accidednt and was not able to continue, so again there was a pause in

Celebrating 50 years

COOROY RAG the “Rag’s” life until Edna was approached by Mrs Florence Duke to be a partner and with the aid of Mrs Jenny Duke and Mrs Connolly they begain again in March 1971. The Cooroy Rag has had a chequered career and there have been many changes, but it has served the town in supplying information very well. Others who followed on were Tom and Harriet Perryn, Joy Laurie and Margaret Chinn. Margaret who ran the paper until 1998. She was able to change the whole look of the paper with the aid of a computer and having it printed professionally. She also changed the name to “The Review”. After Margaret Chinn passed away, the paper

once again ceased publication. Then in 2000 Judy Painter and Deb Boyle were offered the opportunity from the Cooroy Community Jobs Scheme to get the paper back on track. In 2002 they had the opportunity to buy it but decided to hand it to the community so it could never be sold again or fall into the wrong hands. A committee of local business people was formed and the Cooroy Rag now donates all profits after costs back to the local community. It’s certainly going to be a fun experience looking through old editions. We hope you too will enjoy the published items. You never know, you might just see your name mentioned.

FOR the past 25 years Ron and Sue McMah of Marlin Park Brooloo have produced top quality natural grassfed beef for the Japanese and Korean export market at their property in the Mary Valley. Over the years they have observed the increasing trend of injustice with regards to Australian farmers and domestic consumers in relation to the rewards the farmers receive for their product and the price that the consumers pay for quality beef. It is for those reasons that they decided to create their product Mary Valley Prime Beef. Without the middleman they are able to offer a product that is equal to the best Australia can produce for a fraction of the cost that consumers have become familiar with paying. Angus, Hereford and Murray Grey steers are raised and handled with best practice principles without the use of hormones or antibiotics. Cattle are fed a limited grain ration in the paddock to further improve marbling and tenderness yet retaining the unique flavour and goodness of natural grassfed beef. Their product is snap frozen into easy access packs and delivered to your door with free delivery. The clean, green beef is processed and packed at an accredited abattoir and Safe Food Qld accredited butchery with carcasses hung for a minimum of 14 days ensuring absolute tenderness. McMahs endeavour to keep the

quality high and price low and you will be safe in the knowledge that you always know where your beef comes from – locally pro-

duced, clean and no imports. Fair To The Customer – Fair To The Farmer. Phone Mary Valley Prime on 5484 5165.

A new, easy way to train your dog BARK BUSTERS is offering a new and unique style of dog training. It takes the pressure off the owner, especially if they do not have the time or energy to put into training. This is how it works ....... The owner brings their dog to Aunty Faith’s Bed & Bone, whereupon we conduct an in depth interview. We get a clear understanding of their needs and I then formulate a 3 day customised ‘boot camp’ for their dog. The dog is then checked in to stay at Aunty Faith’s Bed & Bone for a period of 3 days where I do all the necessary training to get their pooch under control and obedience trained. Check in times are flexible and at the owner’s convenience. (Pre-training inspections are welcomed) The owner receives a daily update of their dog’s progress. When the training is complete I then in-

struct the owner on exactly how to maintain the control, and leave them with written notes and a guarantee to work with the owner should they experience any problems. They are also taught the techniques of walking their dog on a lead, recall, sitting, staying all their obedience needs. We address all other aspects of behaviour including jumping up, over exuberance, destructive behaviour, barking, not responding to commands and separation anxiety etc. All accomodation, food, training and advice is included in the price of just $220. Clients often tell me that their dog is so much better behaved after a holiday with me - and that is WITHOUT training. (Of course, it will not last if the owner doesn’t apply our techniques.) We still offer ‘in home’ training where we go to the owners home, where the dog is relaxed, and learns much faster than in a group setting. For more information phon 5447 7769.

news Making pool safety their business!

COOROY RAG

WHILST not all pool owners are in agreement with the new pool safety laws that were introduced by the state government on the 1st December 2010, it is difficult to argue with the intent, that is, to reduce infant drownings and immersion related injuries, particularly in the under five year olds. Over the past three years, a total of 18 young Queenslanders have drowned in private pools and according to one study, it was determined that 86 percent were the direct result of the pool barrier being non-compliant, that is, the pool was either improperly fenced, not fenced at all or the gate had been propped open. The new laws which are administered by the Pool Safety Council, require the mandatory inspection of all pools and according to a recent article in the Sunday Mail, in the short time since the legislation came into effect, the majority of pools inspected have failed. Apart from the cost of rectifying the relevant flaws, there is the added cost of the re-inspection before a compliance certificate can be issued. Combined with the cost of the initial inspection, the complete process can cost well in excess of $400.00. The new pool safety standards forbid climbable fences, climbable objects, including vegetation, near fences, gates that open inwards and doors and windows that allow access to the pool area from a residence. Due consideration also has to be given to access from a neighbours property and ensure that the appropriate measures are taken to restrict same. Pool Fence Approvals is a Cooroy based company that has been established specifically to conduct pool safety inspections. According to Chris Bell, proprietor and licensed inspector for the business, they are offering a fixed price service that includes

pre-inspection advice. This is intended to assist the pool owners in making their own assessment and any necessary repairs, prior to the formal inspection. If requested, he will even make a pre-inspection visit to advise on any items or issues that may need clarification. Whilst it might seem an obvious statement to make, Mr Bell suggests due diligence when it comes to selecting a pool inspector since the new regulations mean that as soon as you engage someone do the work, you cannot change to another inspector if you believe they are incompetent, inexperienced or you just don’t like the issues of non-conformity that they raise. It is worth noting that to cope with the demand for inspections, the Pool Safety Council granted all Queensland private building certifiers automatic qualification as a pool safety inspector, for a period of twelve months. This is despite the fact that they were not required to attend the training course or satisfy the stringent testing regime. Furthermore, this status is only valid for twelve months and if, during that time, they elect not to take the training, then they will be unable to conduct further inspections. Another consideration when selecting an inspection service, is that of professional indemnity insurance. The Pool Safety Council specifies a minimum coverage of $1 million but this is thought to be grossly inadequate, particularly in terms of the consequences in the event of the unthinkable, that is, an immersion injury or drowning. Pool Fence Approvals carries coverage of $5 million. Pool Fence Approvals are serious about pool safety, in fact, they are making it their business! For more information, contact them on 5447 7737, mobile 0412 043 843 or by email to chris@poolfenceapprovals.com

news Community Banks back Rural Fire Brigade stations

COOROY RAG WITH all this rain around, it’s easy to forget we’re still in our fire season. In the middle of mopping up our local Rural Fire Brigade is warning against complacency, with the official bush fire season still very much in effect across our region once the hotter weather and drier conditions return. The constant rain has put Noosa in a better position this bush fire season com-

pared to previous years but the message is that no-one should be complacent about the risk of fires. Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade First Officer, Harry Kirk says it’s just about remaining vigilant. “The rain has obviously eased drought conditions in our region, but it’s also caused a significant increase in grass and vegetation growth. We haven’t seen growth like this for some years and that means there is still very real potential for a significant grass fire season once the rain stops and the weather warms up again” Harry said. “Grass fires can quickly threaten people, property and livestock, so everyone should prepare themselves, their family and their property during the fire season. The most important preparation is to complete a Bush Fire Survival Plan, which encompasses all the actions people need to take before and during bush fires.” Harry added. Bush Fire Survival Plans and information on preparing for bush

Fiona Hutchings pictured with the crew from Black Mountain and grass fires can be found at www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au. In the meantime, Cooroy and Tewantin Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank have been keen to lend their support to the Black Mountain and Ridgewood Rural Fire Brigade stations. “We really come to appreciate our sponsorship from the Community Bank branches enabling us to purchase much needed fire fighting knapsacks and wet weather gear,” Harry said. Ridgewood Rural

Fire Station was also happy recipients of some funds to help with their fire fighting supplies. Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Fiona Hutchings said the sponsorship is a great fit for both parties. “We should all be aware of the fantastic work all the Rural Fire Brigade stations do around our region. We’re delighted to support the Black Mountain and Ridgewood stations with a total sponsorship of $3,000. The volunteer crews at both stations are inspirational with the

time and effort they put in year round” Fiona added. Since 2002, Community Bank Branches in Cooroy, Tewantin and Marcoola have combined to give back more than $455,000 to community groups, schools and organisations just like Black Mountain and Ridgewood Rural Fire Brigades. The branches continue to provide communities with an opportunity to enhance control over their community capital, ensuring more money stays in the area for local investment.

THE Sunshine Coast hinterland didn’t fare too badly when compared to the Lockyer Valley, Brisbane, Ipswich and Gympie, but we certainly had our fair share of localised flooding. With the relentless, torrential rain, low lying areas soon resembled inland seas and roads were blocked by raging flood waters. Thankfully, although the water rose quickly, it also dispersed quickly with no homes affected. Thanks to everyone who sent in photos so those of us who were trapped can have a look at what happened.

ST Valentine, in recent years has become the famed ‘Patron Saint of Love and Romance’. His true story is somewhat different having been arrested and imprisoned upon being caught marrying Christian couples and otherwise aiding Christians who were at the time being persecuted by Claudius in Rome. The Anglican Parish of Cooroora are taking a leaf from Valentine’s book and will be celebrating and supporting marriages in a Valentine’s Dinner on February 11th. “We know that many marriages are going through tough times, especially at the moment, with the economic situation and our recent poor weather and flooding hampering many Christmas celebrations.” said

the Revd Julie Woolner. “We are hoping to bring a little joy and happiness into difficult relationships at this time.” It is hoped the evening will be a romantic and inspiring night with two members of the Cooroy congregation offering some insights into marriage through their own experience. In December, Joy and Lawrie Ramm celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary – a mark of the strength of their relationship. Joy and Lawrie said, “We just expected our marriage to last. There have been some difficult times but we never expected to separate and so you have to work with each other.”

Along with hearing some insights from Joy and Lawrie, guests will dine at tables for two with a three course meal served to them, along with champagne and soft drinks. “This is not a fundraiser. It is a way of supporting and encouraging those who are married in our community. We’ve kept the cost of the meal to $40.00 per couple to encourage couples to come along.” said the Revd Julie Woolner. The dinner will be held at Holy Nativity Church Hall, corner of Miva Street and Tewantin Road, Cooroy from 6pm on Friday 11th February. Bookings and more details are available by contacting the Parish Office on 5485 1218 or emailing jwoolner@cooroora.org .

THE Queensland flood victims’ crisis is the focus for the Belli Hall’s next Old-Time Dance to be held on Saturday 29 January, from 7.30 pm. Donating their time to the cause is our regular live-band, the Sunshine Swing Band. As well, all proceedings from dance entry fees will be donated to the Qld Disaster Relief Fund, administered by the Red Cross. This is our Australia Day dance so come along and enjoy some good old-style dancing while supporting a worthy cause. Everyone is welcome, including children and ‘learners’. Entry fee is $12 per adult, $5 for students; children are free. A hearty supper with tea and coffee is included along with

door prizes. Belli Hall is located in beautiful Belli Park at 1170 Kenilworth Road, just past Belli Picnic Shop toward Kenilworth. For our fund-raising dance free bus transport is available from Cooran, Pomona and Cooroy. Transport from Nambour and local areas is available for groups by arrangement. To enquire about transport ring Robert on 0429 154 060 or check our website. For dance or hall information ring Margaret on 5447 0175 or visit our website at www.bellihall.com The next Belli Hall Committee Meeting is scheduled for Tues., 8 Feb. at 7.30 pm. All Belli Park and local residents are invited.

Bagpipes ring in the New Year THE Noosa Pipe Band’s New Year’s Eve Hogmanay, held in the Memorial Hall, Cooroy, was supported by other musicians from the Redcliffe Pipe Band. The Celtic Crossover Band played a mixture of Scottish, Celtic and modern dancing and singing music. A lot of fun was had by the families and couples who came, with a mixture of traditional Scottish dancing, such as ‘Stripping the Willow’, and singing some of the traditional Scottish tunes such as ‘Flower of Scotland’ and ‘Ye canna shove yer Granny aff the Bus’. The raffle and ‘tossing a coin’ competition helped to raise much needed funds for the Band, and the evening was finished in full cry with everyone on the dance floor singing Auld Lang Sine. The Noosa Pipe Band and the Society of St Andrews, Scotland would like to thank all those that supported the function and wish them all a Happy and prosperous New Year.

Congratualtions to Aimee (Howden) and Steve Grubner who shared a delightful wedding ceremony with family and friends at the Maroochy Bushland Botanical Gardens on Saturday the 20th of November. The ceremony beautifully reflected their love and commitment to each other and their children. A highlight of the day was seeing the children share in every aspect of the ceremony from the tying of ribbons to the pouring of coloured sand.

Everybody Welcome

Australia Day celebrations THE Noosa District Junior Rugby League club will be raising money for a flood affected rugby league club at the upcoming Cooroy Library Australia Day celebrations. We will be hosting a fundraising BBQ, with all profits raised to be donated to a club in need. We are asking people to dig deep, buy a sausage and help us help another rugby league club going through terrible loss. At this time, we do not know which Club needs help the most, but we will be making enquiries through QRL. Any money donations, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated.

Not a single detail was spared as beautiful bride Tahlia Smith walked down the isle to marry, Dave Matthews at the Little White Wedding Church in Maleny on Saturday the 27th of November 2010. The reception was held at The Key overlooking the Glass House Mountains. The very happy couple then jetted off to a Island Honeymoon to soak up the sunshine.

Congratulations to Jacob and Liz Horsey who promised their never ending love to each other amongst family and friends at Avatars Abode at Kiel Mountain on Sunday 19th September 2010. A beautiful ceremony filled with vivid colour and the promise of new beginnings. Family and friends came from far and wide to share in the joyous celebration.

COOROY RAG Helping Queenslanders for 30 years SES by Carol Watkins, Group Leader, Cooroy S.E.S. AS we go to press, we are in the middle of an extraordinary weather event. Since Christmas we have been constantly busy with sandbagging and tarping jobs– not a high pressure workload, until now. This Friday started with serious flooding and progressed through to unbelievable sights on Sunday. Water, water everywhere literally. On Saturday after some sandbagging and various repair jobs we were called to a job with a difference. A farmer on the Bruce Highway near Federal was concerned about cattle in a low lying paddock and wanted to move them to a higher, safer paddock on the other side of the highway. We were activated to stop the traffic while the cattle were herded about 150 metres up the highway and through the gate on the other side of the highway. What an exercise! Cattle were wandering everywhere and stopping to chew on, to them, succulent grass, while the ma-

THE congregation at St John’s Lutheran Church in the Mary Valley town of Imbil has been worshipping there for the last 75 years. It is a small congregation which covers a wide age group. In 1936 visiting preachers began to conduct Lutheran Services in private homes and public halls. These people were members of the then ELCA branch of the Lutheran Church.

In 1945, Pastor Les Grope conducted the first UELCA Lutheran Service in Imbil in a private home. After that a number of makeshift houses of worship were used by the congregation. The ultimate aim was to have their own House of Worship. This began to take concrete shape when the Kandanga Cemetery Chapel was purchased and moved to Imbil. On February 22nd 1959 the congregation realized their dream with the opening and dedication of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lambert-Hyne Drive, Imbil. This congregation is part of the Gympie Lutheran Church Parish and the current Pastor, Rev Frank Rasenberger, lives in Gympie. The congregation now meets every 1st and 3rd Sunday for Regular Service including Holy Commun-

ion at 10.30 am. There is also a Lay Reading Service on the 4th Sunday of the month at 9.00am. On the occasional 5th Sunday of the month, the congregation combines with other churches in nearby Kenilworth for a Combined Ecumenical Service at 10.30am. Although the congregation is small, it is very friendly and enjoys having visitors at its services. Ideally, like any church, we would welcome new members. St John’s Church can be found on the river side of the main street in the township of Imbil. Our services finish in time for the arrival of the Mary Valley Rattler. This allows visitors to enjoy all the other things that Imbil and district have to offer such as the markets, the dam and forest drives. Just before Christmas we were activated to undertake a land search for an elderly man missing from his home in Doonan. This search went on for 4 days, and we went back again after Christmas for a final day to re-do an area. Unfortunately to date, this gentleman has not been located. Thank you once again, to local residents who provided support of cold drinks in the hot and humid conditions. Some people still do not realise that all SES members are volunteers who give of their time quite selflessly and fortunately, at times like this, have very valuable support from their families who are left alone for many long hours. As my husband says ‘these are extraordinary times’. Our next intake for new members is fast approaching. Induction will be conducted on Saturday 12 February. For information please call for Cooroy Carol Watkins, 0427 349218; Pomona, Steve Muir, 0428 571213; Tewantin, Murray Caddie, 0410 512535; and for Boreen Point, Ron Williams, 0488 795102.

jority of motorists were patiently waiting at another halt, out of many, on the highway. Sunday was very full on with all groups in our local SES activated, but in a very short time, after being able to complete a few jobs, both Boreen Point and Pomona Groups were locked in with entries flooded to their communities. Cooroy and Tewantin proceeded to undertake the rest of the jobs with two of our traffic controllers posted on Cooroy Noosa Road for about 5 hours in the driving rain, as this road was flooded in a number of places, and closed by the police. Thank you to the residents who dropped me a very welcome cup of hot coffee. Monday morning at 3.00am Cooroy floodboat was activated to attend an emergency on the Bruce Highway although the two operators, plus the Local Controller, had been out all day and late into Sunday night. Monday morning has dawned with predictions of more rain, with flash flooding, so no doubt we’ll be out with as many of our volunteers as possible again.

Mayor Bob Abbot has thanked the community for their generosity and re-emphasised that all calls made through council’s 5475 7272 number regarding these offers are being recorded by council customer service staff in anticipation of requests for such help. “Due to the large number of calls, we ask that where possible, residents email http:/ /bit.ly/VolQLDCREW or alternatively customerservice@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

“It will take some time for these regions to work out the logistics of relocating people, given they have all allocated respite areas organised and we ask that those registering as volunteers wait until such requests come through,” Cr Abbot said. Council’s three welfare centres, stood down last week, are also still in standby mode as potential receiving centres and can be re-activated at short notice. Cr Abbot said the many offers of physical goods such as food hampers, blankets etc would be best administered through existing and efficient distribution networks such Red Cross, the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul. “Please call Red Cross, Salvation Army or Vinnies to find out what’s required; what are the priorities; and how to get supplies there,” he said.

to register and council will pass on your details your details,” Cr Abbot said. “When the email is processed, customer service officers will send a return email asking ‘Do you have any objections to us providing your details to Volunteering Sunshine Coast who are coordinating coastal volunteers?’ “This is a necessary step for insurance purposes.” Before volunteers can be contacted further and allocated for assignments, council will await actual requests from neighbouring regions, Cr Abbot said. “But we continue to welcome all forms of offers to assist,” he said. The flood levels in some areas have not reached the predicted levels feared, but there are still a large number of people affected, the mayor said.

Young Australian drivers troubled by poor night vision

5442 5556 Hinteractive Physio

HALF of young drivers find it more difficult to focus on the roads when driving at night, a recent online survey by Optometrists Association Australia has found. The national survey of 1,000 Australian drivers, aged 18 to 25, also found one in three are concerned their vision might impact their ability to identify hazards at night. Fifty-one per cent of women and 36 per cent of men reported their night vision was poor to average. Local optometrists, Heather McLeod and Jenny Currie from optometry@cooroy are urging young people to consider having an eye examination to ensure safe driving at night. “In a regional location such as ours with less available public transport there is defi-

nitely a need for many to drive at night. Also, with the recent poor weather conditions, good vision is even more important to a driver’s ability to identify hazards and concentrate on the roads” says Jenny. “The findings reiterate the importance of having regular eye checks to ensure you are as fit as possible to drive safely on our roads.” Fourteen per cent of survey participants avoided driving at night due to difficulties with their vision. Tiredness (91%), the strong lights of on-coming cars (86%), distractions within the car (82%), and eye conditions such as short-sightedness (32%), had the greatest impact on vision when driving at night, according. to the survey. Heather says “It is not uncommon for

people with perfect day vision to have some difficulties seeing at night, including blurriness, double-vision or even seeing haloes around lights. “Dry, tired or fatigued eyes are other common problems for many people, particularly those who use a computer or study for long periods.” If you are concerned about your night vision or are experiencing sight difficulties whilst driving, visit your optometrist for an eye examination. Visual examinations by an optometrist are either bulk-billed or attract a Medicare rebate and no referral is required. For more information or to book an appointment visit optometry@cooroy at 62 Maple Street, Cooroy or phone 5442 5555.

DOUBLE Happiness Acupuncture and Oriental Health is launching Donation Day in 2011. On the first Wednesday of every month Double Happiness is opening it’s doors for people to come along and have an acupuncture treatment and pay by donation. “People on low incomes often face limited health care choices and are often only able to access health care that can be bulked billed. Donation Day is a way to make acupuncture accessible to everyone,” says Emma Iwinska of Double Happiness. “If you have a chronic health problem you are often unable to work, and in turn do not have the money for complementary health care. “Acupuncture is highly successful for pain management and is now being used in some Australian hospitals in emergency departments, cardio units, maternity wards, and for drug and alcohol dependence.

Emma has treated clients with acupuncture in a diverse range of settings. “I have worked in drug and alcohol detoxification, crisis accommodation centres, a women’s prison, private practice and hospitals. The beauty of acupuncture is its ability to help everyone no matter what their situation. “I have seen so many amazing responses to acupuncture and it is highly rewarding to be working with such a diverse range of people, including those who really need it but normally have no way to afford it. Assessing funding for community based projects is always very challenging, so if there are any philanthropists out there who would interested in helping support a community clinic of complementary therapies please contact me.” Acupuncture is effective in treating almost any health complaint including anxiety, depression, digestive problems,

chronic fatigue, sore backs, menopausal and fertility problems. Double Happiness specialises in the very gentle style of Japanese acupuncture, giving clients a relaxing and peaceful acupuncture session. Emma also offers a specialised form of treatment for children called shonishin. Shonishin uses insertion free techniques including tapping and massage to improve children’s health and can treat anything from chronic ear infections and digestive problems, to hyperactivity and behavioural issues. The Double Happiness practice specialises in gynaecology, obstetric and paediatric health and also offers a holistic plan for chronic disease management. If you would like to book an acupuncture treatment on Donation Day please contact Emma on 5442 7075 or 0431 946 366. The Double Happiness Oriental Health practice is located at 37 Memorial Drive Eumundi.

health How to keep your New Years’ resolutions toned up

COOROY RAG

WE’RE already well into the new year and people are already hard at work on their fitness and weight loss goals. To avoid being disappointed at the end of the year, maybe it’s time to change your approach to achieving your goals. Instead of asking yourself how you can lose more weight, why not ask yourself how you could enjoy exercise more? Instead of watching the scales every morning to mark your successes (or failures), why not track your smaller, yet more important accomplishments? This year we should focus on fit, healthy and better toned bodies. Muscle mass is a very important function of health and improvements in this component of your body composition offers improvements in not just strength and tone, but also to bone density, balance and coordination. Hopefully among the gifts you received from Santa are some that can help you have a healthier and stronger year this year. “Exer-Games” (such as Wii-fit) are very

More stable blood glucose levels not only improve your health but assist in burning any unwanted body fat gained over the festive season. “Determining the starting resistance for your new or improved resistance program is best assessed by a qualified Physiotherapist, Exercise Physiologist, or Personal Trainer. For those new to weight training, the initial weight may be used for the first month and more resistance slowly added as your program is progressed for your improvements or you may choose to use a different type of resistance program as you adapt to your toned and healthier muscle mass. A warm up period is required before beginning your resistance exercise routine as warm muscles are more flexible and less likely to be injured. This is a good point of your day to get a walk into your lifestyle, or if you already participate in cardio exercise it is a great opportunity to add a few extra exercises into your routine to keep your muscles well toned.” Phone Hinteractive Physio on 5442 5556.

Health and fitness success just a step away AT this time of year it is quite likely that many of us have made a New Year’s resolution to address our health and fitness. popular and most have recent updates and variations with a focus on making movement fun and are great for getting sedentary people moving, but not intense enough for increasing strength and tone for experienced exercisers. Resistance / weight training is often the focus of those who want to increase strength and provide definition of muscles in targeted areas of the body,” said Craig Steele, Sports Physiotherapist at Hinteractive Physio. “While cardio exercise is also important to health, resistance training is the best strategy for changing your appearance and keeping your bone density and connective tissue healthy. “Resistance exercises help boost your metabolic rate and increase your endurance during other physical activities. “When combined with a good nutrition plan providing healthy quantities of protein, gains in muscle mass and tone burn calories at a faster rate and help to keep your blood glucose levels under control.

granted when I was younger as I was a ballet dancer. However, since having children I hadn’t done any exercise at all and the scales had crept up to alarming figures. I had tried all the diets with no success and when my youngest child went to school last year, I decided it was the year for me to focus on myself. “I chose Make a Difference Health & Fitness to help me achieve my goals as I felt I needed the help of a personal trainer to keep me focussed and accountable. My life has absolutely changed since I’ve been going to Lee - I’ve got more energy, lost about 20 kgs, and my muscle tone has improved. Lee’s approach is really supportive and encouraging but he makes sure you work to your potential. “I never would have believed that I would be the type of person to exercise five times a week, but that’s what I’m doing now - once a week with Lee in the studio as well as swimming, jogging or bike riding. I’ve even competed in some mini-triathlons and have signed up for the Noosa & Mooloolaba triathlons this year as a bit of a goal. “I’ve also used the naturopath services of Maria at Make a Difference and this has kick started my metabolism which was practically non-existent. Maria has also helped with my eating choices and given me lots of guidance. They are a great team and the combination of their services is so effective and has really helped change my mindset and my life. real estate Let’s talk about the elephant in the room IS it a Real Estate price bubble or a media bubble of journalistic hot air? Hinternoosa.com.au would like to burst that bubble with facts and suggest that our hinterland market provides a gift to both buyers and sellers (whose properties are priced realistically). I’ve said it before, but it applies even more today, that our hinterland demographic is a lot more resilient than other regions in Australia. Despite Sooth-Sayers predictions of Murray Brown further downward pressure on prices, the hinterland continues to provide the perfect environment to purchase your green dream. Sales have ranged from $300,000 to in the millions, with an average price of $568,700. We’re experiencing good turnover in local property in the 4th quarter of 2010, over the past 3 months we’ve written a contract every 2nd working day! Our buyer demographic is largely made up of people who aspire to live a low stress sustainable lifestyle. Hinterland properties offer a more holistic approach to affordable family life and we’re very lucky to have the best of both worlds with the glamour of Noosa Heads on our doorstep should we chose to indulge. Although we also have excellent shopping, restaurants and cafés dotted locally in the hinterland pockets of Cooroy, Pomona, Eumundi & Doonan/Tinbeerwah. Following hot off the heels of our nine million dollar library complex, Cooroy coffee connoisseurs are well pleased that Jamaica Blue has come to our town. Well as 2011 begins it’s time to reflect on where we have been and where we are going. Considering the challenging economic climate in Australia and the inclement weather that we experienced in the second half of the year, all in all the results were good for 2010. On average hinternoosa.com.au, in our core business area, in the Noosa Hinterland incorporating Eumundi, Cooroy and Pomona averaged about 10 to 12 sales a month and even December effected by the flooding and the festive season saw us write a dozen contracts with an average sale price around $700,000. I anticipate that 2011 will see more of the same. The restrained economic climate in the world, along with the stronger dollar, will limit the number of buyers in our market place. However if buyers and sellers are realistic I anticipate that we will write similar business this year to what was the case in 2010. Buyers continue to do a lot of their research online, hence they are very well informed and more than ever the three P’s are critical to achieve a sale at a good price. For those that are unaware the three P’s are Price, Presentation and Promotion. In 2011 sellers and agents who don’t keep the focus right on the three P’s simply won’t sell. Already in January 2011, hinternoosa.com.au has achieved some benchmark sale prices in the town of Cooroy. This demonstrates that whilst there are a reduced number of buyers in the market place, they are prepared to pay the price when they find the dream property. Our region enjoys a buyers demographic that is very broad. For this reason it is my view that the economic impacts of the Eastern Australian flooding and the high Australian dollar will only slightly reduce the number of buyers active in the market place, as they will be replaced by purchasers who are not affected by those two circumstances. Murray Brown, principal hinternoosa.com.au

THERE may have been a GFC in 2010 but that did not stop the amazing efforts of one small country RSL and their volunteers who raised over $50,000 for the community through their Community Benefit Events which included the now famous Aussie Trivia, the outrageous good fun of the Barefoot Bowls and BBQs, and the culturally invigorating Art Exhibitions with a twist! Recipients of these funds were many, and included essential service organisations such as the SES and the Black Mountain Fire Brigade, care providers Katie Rose Cottage and Bloomhill Cancer Help, and sporting clubs such as the Cooroy Pony Club and Badminton. Young Australian Gymnastic representative Dillon was also assisted, with funds raised to help fly him to Las Vegas in March to do Cooroy proud and compete with the world’s best. This fundraising was in addition to the extra community services that the Cooroy RSL has initiated, such as the Community bus which provides shopping trips and transport for medical appointments to the elderly and the disabled, the Tourist Information stand, and application to provide Cooroy with a Sport & Recreation Coordinator. Club representative Sandy Bolton said that the

RSL has truly become the hub of Cooroy, and that the incredible injection of funds into the Community in hard times continues to ensure that Cooroy has the best in services for all ages, making it one of the most desirable locations to live in the Sunshine Coast. On behalf of the club she would like to thank all members and visitors who have attended the many fundraising events throughout the year, and to the volunteers and businesses especially Guardian Pharmacy who continue to provide the essential sponsorship to make much of this possible. The aim for 2011 is to exceed last year’s efforts, and the team has a range of events that are not only great fun, but raise monies for the regions non profit sector, and continue to strengthen Cooroy as the caring, friendly town that it is famous for. For more information on how your organisation can become a recipient, or how you as part of the community can help out, please contact Sandy Bolton on 54476131. The next fundraiser is for the Community Hospice on the 22nd, and the Art Exhibition/ Chocolate Feast on Feb 11 for Eden Rehabilitation Centre.

Noosa Boat Club encourages new members Course is under water but the Beer is Cold Support your local Club

Myall St, Cooroy • 5447 6258 Chrissie Fussell, safe on “trainer wheels” tranquil peaceful Lake Macdonald. NOOSA Boat Club, started in just June 2009, is firmly established on scenic Lake Macdonald with rowers on the water most days of the week. Club captain Linda Grams is keen to acknowledge the support the club has had since its earliest days from the Noosa District Community Hatchery. “We’ve had a great relationship with the hatchery since our first days of planning the club,” she said. “The ongoing support from Vince Collis has been phenomenal, we simply wouldn’t be there without it.” The hatchery provides an important base for the club and storage for its boats and equipment. The rowing club has steadily increased its membership since it started, catering for rowers of all abilities and ages. “Our members range from complete be-

ginners to longstanding rowers and across an age range that stretches from 16 to 70,” Linda said. “Our club atmosphere is strongly encouraging, with personalised coaching, and from day one we’ve had a strong emphasis on safety. “It’s such a sociable and enjoyable way to keep fit, in a fantastic natural environment.” First time rower Chrissie Fussell, who joined the club in August last year, couldn’t agree more and found “trainer wheels”, floats attached to a scull, a huge help in becoming confident and feeling safe on the lake. “It was a great start, and being on the lake gives a beautiful, tranquil connection with nature,” she said. Chrissie found the club very welcoming, and rowing has given her a new focus on her health and fitness.

“Rowers of all ages can participate together,” she said. “On the water I find myself on an equal footing with all age groups, you’re not put into a box.” Noosa Boat Club encourages all rowing interests from social to competitive and in the last year members have competed in state, national and international competitions, bringing home a large clutch of medals. Linda said they are keen to take on more new members, especially new recruits for Learn to Row courses. Membership is not necessary for Learn to Row programs and course fees can be offset against membership when it is taken up. Anyone interested in finding out more about Noosa Boat Club and signing up for a Learn to Row course can call Linda Grams on 0402 484 614.
