Hats off to locals who shaved for a cure

Not My Fave!

I’VE spent some time in the waiting room of the doctor’s surgery lately and I have to say, I wish they’d tone it down a bit with the scary posters. When I get bored with reading the 1989 Woman’s Days the rest of my usual 40 minute waiting period is spent reading all of the paraphernalia on the walls so by the time I get to see the doctor I’ve already given myself a breast examination, convinced myself I have, at the very least, a melanoma, heart and lung disease and have decided just to double check again that women can’t get prostate cancer. No wonder my blood pressure is always high. I’m pretty sure they have a secret memo on their computer suggesting I’m a hypochondriac when the truth is I’m just a sucker for advertising. I do save them some money on diagnostics though. After mentioning how I got teary after my teenage son asked if I wanted to share the bathroom mirror for a little mummy/son shaving sesh they didn’t need to do a blood test to diagnose peri-menopause. I don’t know if it’s a blessing or a curse that we get hairy and wrinkly at the same age we start to lose our close up vision. Just as I’m now unsure that when people say I look like my father if they’re referring to our height and eye colour or our ear hair and bushy brows. All I can hope for is that I don’t end up being featured in one of those Woman’s Days as the mummy who turned into daddy. So there you have it ... Memos, mirrors and menopause. Finding the wax pot empty... not my fave! There was some great local support once again for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser. Dan Chricton, Bill Brandenburg, Matt Dawson, Dallas Crisp, Kym Bourke, Lyn Johanson, Jamie Robertson, Sandy Bolton, Roger Lange, Fozzy Rowland, Elise from Salon Unique who did the hair shaving, Chloe MacFarlane, Daniel Cummings, Sandy Loveday, Eddie Rykenberg, Wayde Burkett. We’ll let you know the amount raised next issue, after it’s all been counted. Thanks once again to the Cooroy community for your generosity

Noosa De-amalgamation Information Night

The Footy Umpire or Referee One thing I never have a desire to be, Is a football umpire, or referee, Whatever the level, whatever the code, They must really suffer a pressure overload. He must keep up with the speed of the game, While the crowd keep calling him a very rude name, He can’t pretend he’s injured, to get a short rest, I’m surprised more don’t suffer a cardiac arrest.

When some big boofy forward, three times his size Confronts him and yells “Ain’t you got eyes??!!! He has to stay calm, perhaps wear a sweet grin, And give him the answer – a spell in the bin. Then some poor little hooker, beneath a collapsed scrum, Screams “Hey ref, some bloke’s just bitten me right on the bum,” The ref answers gently, “Oh dear that wasn’t very nice,” “Have your coach kiss it better, then sit on some ice.” When he makes a decision, half the crowd think he’s right, Then a crash tackle happens, and starts a big fight, He looks on sadly, but no blood seems to flow, So he just blows his whistle and gets on with the show. There’s the bounce in the centre, the ruck, and the maul A push in the back, or handling the ball, He has to watch closely, eyes in back of head With the crowd asking loudly if his parents were wed.

DE-AMALGAMATION is a hot topic at present and there are many opinions on whether it is a good thing or not. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce will hold a public meeting so the community can hear more about it. Noel Playford from Noosa Independence Alliance will attend to outline the details about their proposed new Noosa Council. He will speak about financial details, structure and their new marketing campaign. There will also be a question and answer session after his presentation to answer any queries from the community. Also the Member for Noosa, Mr Glen Elmes MP, will be in attendance to provide information on how the proposed new Noosa Council would proceed through the State Government. The meeting is open to the general public and will be held at the Cooroy Hotel on Tuesday 12 April 2011 commencing at 6pm. To assist with planning it would be appreciated if you could advise if you are attending by emailing info@cooroy.com.au.

So please be understanding and kind to these chaps If they didn’t function, your sports would collapse, They have to train hard, just like the teams, The job is demanding, not as easy as it seems. It would be nice, in the rooms when the game’s at an end, And the teams all sing songs, with a pretty rough blend, If they all sang a song, to give credit where it’s due, “We don’t know why we love you ref, but we do, we do, we do.”

WINNER of last issue’s “What Have We Here” was Mark Dare of Cooroy who correctly guessed that the pic was the the 105mm Pack Howitzer Mobile Artillery Gun located in the Cooroy RSL Memorial Park. Interestingly enough, Cooroy local, Vern Johnston, was amongst the first gun crew to fire the gun in Australia and his son, Paul, was on the last gun crew. The gun was in service from 1962 to 1975. To win “What have we here”, you must tell us what and where abouts this is located? Send your entry to: What Have We Here?, Cooroy Rag, PO Box 898, Cooroy 4563 or email editorial@cooroyrag.com.au to be in the running for a $25 dinner voucher at the Cooroy RSL Club. Entries will be drawn on April 8.

THE ‘Cooroy Shop Till You Drop’ competition was drawn at Cooroy Saddlery Warehouse on Saturday the 5th of March. Shoppers had to attach 12 dockets from 12 different local retail stores and then drop them in at the Saddlery in Jarrah St to be in the running to win a share of $1,500 in prizes. Of the many entries, the lucky winner was Janet Webb. Janet gets to spend $1,000 worth of shopping vouchers from local retailers. Cooroy Saddlery Warehouse offered a bonus of an extra $100 in cash for the winner if they were present at the draw. Can you believe Janet was at the store and left 5 mins before she was drawn out as the winner! Many thanks to the 35 retailers who donated gift vouchers. The promotion was designed to help boost local business in a fun way where everyone had a chance to benefit in some way.

TRUSS - FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WIDE BAY: NEWS that the Federal Labor Government has not allocated any money to start construction on upgrading Section A of the notorious Cooroy to Curra section of the Bruce Highway until at least 2015 will shock local motorists. A spokesman for Federal Transport and Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese has been quoted in local media as saying that the $200 million allocated by Labor to the Cooroy to Curra upgrade of the Highway between 2009-11 will be spent only on planning studies and land acquisitions. Minister Albanese has refused to name a starting date for construction but his spokesman’s comments seem to confirm local fears that the Government will not even start construction of Section A until 2015 or later. At the last election, the Coalition committed $800 million for road construction between Cooroy and Curra. In contrast, Labor committed just $200 million, and now it seems that money will not build a single kilometre of new highway. $200 million seems to be an extraordinary amount of money to spend on planning and land, since most of the Section A corridor was acquired by the previous Government. Section A extends from south of Cooroy to Sankeys Road. We know that the Government is currently building the Section B upgrade which goes around the non-existent Traveston Crossing dam on a route that is longer and more expensive than the community’s preferred option. This is a project that was to be funded by the State Government but is now being largely paid for by the Federal Government using money from the previous Government’s Future Fund. The urgency for the upgrade has only increased since Labor promised its $200 million, as traffic volumes and the freight task of the Highway have also risen. Now we have the RACQ’s Australian Road Assessment report which confirms that the Cooroy to Gympie section of the Bruce Highway is Queensland’s worst, but the Gillard Government refuses to say when construction will even start on Section A. Action needs to be taken now. Reduced speed limits, painted median strips, flashing signs and fewer overtaking opportunities do nothing to increase the capacity of the Highway. We need a genuine road building commitment from the Government if the safety and efficiency of the Highway is to be improved. The Government cannot afford to wait any longer, as delays to the Cooroy to Curra upgrade will impact on other projects along the Highway which also require priority.”

ALBANESE - FEDERAL MINISTER FOR INFRASTRUCTUREAND TRANSPORT: THE Gillard Labor Government has repeatedly stated our commitment to the staged upgrade and duplication of the entire stretch of the Bruce Highway between Cooroy and Curra – contrary to the shameful and dishonest claims made by Nationals Leader Warren Truss (p4, March 2, 2011). Indeed when it comes to this issue, Mr Truss has zero credibility. No one should forget that during his 12 years as a member of the former Howard Government – including almost two years as Federal Transport Minister – Mr Truss failed to secure even one dollar to begin the upgrade of this notorious section of highway. Put simply, when he had a chance to do something to fix this piece of road infrastructure, Mr Truss chose to do nothing – a record I intend to remind him of every time he attempts to play politics with

this issue. Compared to Mr Truss’ 12 years of inaction and neglect, this Federal Labor Government has already started construction on Section B, the only section the former government had bothered to do any planning on. This $613 million project is on track to be completed by next year. In addition, we’ve also committed $200 million to finish the detailed planning and pre-construction activities which Mr Truss failed to do along the remaining three sections. In fact out of this allocation we’ve already spent $75 million on necessary land resumptions. Here’s the bottom line: if the former Howard Government had made a financial commitment equal to the one we’re now making then this stretch of highway would today be almost fully duplicated. Despite attempts to rewrite history, this is one fact Mr Truss can’t erase or hide from.

Letter to the editor SO according to the recent article in a (unnamed) newspaper also read by locals we have been informed that the little man won a round. I speak of the stoush between the owners of The Plantation vs selected residents on Ponderosa Dr. While I have been involved with a number of challenges with local and state government over the years both privately and through local interest groups (Chamber of Commerce, Lower Mill Board and others) I think it would be interesting to now reflect on who has actually won and lost in the process of the above bruhaha. First, let us understand that it was not the whole of Pondrosa Dr residents that picked this fight. It was not even the majority of residents of this street that backed this confrontation. So one might wonder if it was a minority view. Second, the acreage (20+/-) that is dedicated to The Planation has not been a residential block but has been approved as a Bed & Breakfast with the attendant development costs of such a high quality establishment. It was a Pollonia plantation before this. Not wishing to say one side is right or one side is wrong, I do think the effect of the decision is a costly one for Cooroy. Having a local facility that caters for weddings (an idea that is coming back into vogue) but in so doing employs a goodly number of people (locals) and also brings in a lot of visitors. I would expect that each wedding would result in something nearing 100 motel room nights for visitng

guests and with it the attendant expenditure of many dollars for food and fuel. Cooroy of course has little in the way of motel facilities but we sure do have restaurants also employing local people who could be benefitting from this increased trade. It might even have encouraged the building of a motel in Cooroy given that the need is certainly obvious. Notwithstanding, that the little guy ought to have the right to defend his “castle” I just wonder if this has been a winning decision? The owners of the Plantation can be credited with having brought a lot of jobs to Cooroy, not to mention a great dining facility in the Hotel. They are very supportive of local activities by donating to Christmas in Cooroy, giving free space for a number of people and groups to hold their various meetings at no charge for the space and in general being very supportive of our community even if they don’t yet live here. Finally, having lived in Cooroy on Kauri Street near the cemetary, I know how noise travels in a quiet community. We would be able to listen to the play by play on the sports oval whenever there was a football game and that was all the way across town. This “racket” was just something one has to endure if one wants to share in a small community. In the end I think this has been an opportunity lost . . . Tex Pipke, Cooroy

COOROY RAG BOUQUETS & B R I C K B AT S BOUQUET: Sitting outside Eagle Boys late one avo, I watched a group of 8 teenagers walking towards me along Elm Street. The boys shirtless, shorts around their knees, girls wearing bum freezers as my dad would call them. Then one boy just tossed his empty coke can on the road and kept walking. This made me cranky and I wound down my window and said, “Excuse me mate, would you mind picking up that can you just tossed?” Expecting a mouthful of abuse, he politely said “Sorry lady. That was thoughtless.” He then ran the length of Elm St picked it up, and ran back and placed it in the bin outside Eagle Boys. I came away thinking how proud I was of this young man’s subsequent actions especially having been chipped in front of his mates. I guess we can sit back and make judgments, but maybe in this town we just need to let these kids know what is and is not acceptable in our eyes and then give them the chance to show us what lies beneath the appearance. 4 Emerald Street, (Opp IGA) Cooroy Phone IF you were out and about in Cooroy on the evening of Thursday 3rd March you may have been astonished by the sight of some fifty “odd” people all clad in red dresses – yes! Men as well as women! – cavorting through town. What you would have encountered were the Hinterland Hash House Harriers taking part in their annual Red Dress Charity Run. This year the event was organised to benefit The Sunshine Coast Hospice Community. The Cooroy RSL very kindly relaxed their otherwise stringent dress code that evening to allow some decidedly strange looking folk into the club for a very tasty meal followed by a charity auction. With donations of goods made by both the members themselves and many Cooroy businesses, some $530 was raised for the hospice. This was a special event for the Hinterland Hash House Harriers. Usually, every Thursday evening at 6:15 the group meets to run or walk a trail set for them by the week’s “hares”. In all weathers and every kind of terrain (particularly favouring bush trails), this somewhat quirky and highly enthusiastic group is a close-knit, egalitarian bunch from amazingly diverse backgrounds and generally “mature” years. They are part of a world-wide but completely informal organisation of clubs that like to combine exercise with fun activities and plenty of partying. The idea of starting a Hash House Harriers club based around Pomona and Cooroy in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland came in 2006 when several members of the Noosa Silvertails HHH were on a train booked exclusively for an international contingent of Hashers who were heading from Singapore to Chiang Mai. Around 20 to 40 members now turn out every Thursday evening for a night of exercise, a meal and a bit of a party. New walkers or runners are always welcome, and asked to bring a good torch and suitable shoes, a sense of humour and fun. If you think you might survive an evening with the Hinterland Hash House Harriers, why not give Gloria Bale a call at ISSA in Cooroy on 5447 6155.

EX Noosa District SHS graduate and now Adjunct Professor, Nursing Director of Research at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, Jeanine Young, was awarded a Certificate of Achievement Australia Day Award by Queensland Health for her commitment to research in paediatrics and child health. Jeanine, who graduated from NDSHS in 1984, is passionate about infant and child health. Her belief that children require advocates who strive to ensure that health services meet their needs has been a driving force throughout her 23 year career in nursing, midwifery and child health. Jeanine’s valuable work into researching Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), earned her an international award at Deakin’s University for Leadership in Nursing and Midwifery in 2010 and she will participate in the SIDS and KIDS national Consensus Forum on the Safe Sleeping public health recommendations to be relaunched nationally this year. Jeanine’s pioneering work on risk reduction has been instrumental in developing policy and protocols for health professionals throughout Australia. Jeanine’s mother Sue, who lives Eumundi, is justifiably proud of her daughter and I’m sure we all join her in offering our congratulations to Jeanine.

Debt to Equity ONE of the key issues that needs to be considered by business owners, is what is the right mix between debt and equity and more particularly in the current financial climate, have the fundamentals really changed? In good times debt is generally referred to as gearing. In bad times, gearing is generally referred to as debt. At any time people will also have a particular personal view on what the right level of exposure is. One of the key measures of debt levels is called interest coverage. This is a measure of the proportion of the cash flow of the business that is consumed by paying interest on the debt. It is a measure that fluctuates with the performance of the business as well as the interest rate. It also has a tendency to be a non-issue in good times and a substantial problem in bad times. Whether you are buying a business or simply expanding, a key consid-

eration is the question of how you are going to fund it. The three simple choices are: • Either raise money through equity (selling part of the company to others), • Arrange debt finance (borrowing money), • A combination of the two. As a general rule these choices will have a similar degree of difficulty. That is, if it is easy to get a loan, it will also be easier to find investors, and, if it is difficult it will be difficult for both. Equity is forever, whereas business loans have terms. What is bringing some highly geared companies some problems is that they need to refinance their loans in a tight financial market. Equity based businesses do not have this problem as there is no requirement to refinance equity. Establishing your own range of debt and equity limits is essentially a personal choice. In part it will be influenced by

the minimum level of ownership you are prepared to accept (e.g., 51%). It may also be influenced by the level of debt you are comfortable with and/or you are able to obtain. 8 Reserve Street, Pomona JOANIE helps keep our heroes afloat: Jenny and I enjoyed a terrific afternoon out at the Cooroy RSL at Saturday’s Keep Our Local Heroes Afloat event with about 180 other keen supporters. Congratulations must go to organiser Joanie Boyce, the Cooroy RSL and the many entertainers who gave their time for a great cause. Joanie managed to attract musicians, dancers and singers aged from 8 to 81, many from the local district, while other very professional artists came from as far away as Warwick, Beaudesert and Maryborough. The proceeds tallied around $3000, and will be handed over to the local SES and Red Cross members at an RSL presentation soon. Joanie is not a novice at fundraising - earlier this year she managed to raise $600 for charity at her 81st birthday bash. Well done Joanie. Powerline proposals to be reviewed: I recently contacted the Minister for Energy and Water Utilities Stephen Robertson in relation to the proposed Woolooga to West Cooroy powerline. After meetings with the Minister and his staff, PAGE representatives and affected landowners living in the path of Powerlink’s proposed route, I have asked the Minister would his department organise for an independent review of both the Powerlink proposal and the PAGE committee’s alternative proposed route. A special State Government unit has now been assigned the role of investigating both the Powerlink proposal and the alternative

PAGE proposal (which is aligned more closely with the main highway). I requested a meeting with this unit and have been refused this opportunity. I have now asked the Minister for particulars of this unit’s proven independence on assessing similar applications. I have also asked for particulars about what resources are available to the unit so it can independently investigate matters before making recommendations to the Minister. I have made it clear to the Minister’s office that if this information isn’t provided to me, I will have no alternative other than taking this matter up with the Premier. Highway plan display delayed: I have been in touch with Main Roads regarding the delayed public display of the Bruce Highway upgrade between Curra and Cooroy (Cooroy southern interchange to Sankeys Road). Main Roads has advised me that the display, originally planned for December 2010, will be organised as soon at the Federal Government finalises a range of investigations and provides final approvals for the plan. I will keep you up to date on the progress of this project and hope to see plans in the near future. Be wary of needle injuries on trains: I have raised a number of issues with the Transport Minister following a recent report of a local woman receiving a needle-stick injury in a Brisbane train. I have asked the Minister to introduce warnings on train public address systems about the possibility of syringes being placed around

Joanie Boyce received a Community Service Award from MP Peter Wellington for her efforts in raising $3000 for Red Cross and the SES at her ‘Keep Our Heroes Afloat’ Variety Concert at the RSL last month train seats where travellers can be injured. The incident reported in Sunshine Coast media indicated the syringe had been deliberately placed, pointing upward between the seat and the wall, so it would in-

jure whoever sat in the seat. I have been in direct contact with the woman who was injured, and she has had to have blood tests and will require further testing over time to ensure she has not been infected

with any disease. I have also requested information on security recordings on trains and train stations to clarify whether police are able to trace people responsible for this deliberate act on public transport.

Seniors get connected TELSTRA is providing free hands-on mobile phone tutorials to seniors in Noosa on Tuesday 29 March, hosted by The Gadget Guy, Peter Blasina. Telstra Country Wide Area General Manager for the Sunshine Coast, Kris Carver, said Telstra Connected Seniors sessions were designed to help local seniors get the most out of their mobile phone and stay connected with their families, friends and the world around them. “While some seniors can send picture messages to loved ones, others lack confidence doing simpler tasks like adding a contact. We all learn at our own pace, and in our own way, so we ’re encouraging seniors to attend these sessions, and enjoy hands-on advice from experienced Telstra staff,” said Mr Carver said.

Peter Blasina aka, the Gadget Guy, will provide hands-on mobile coaching sessions, helping seniors tame modern technology and become more connected. The free sessions offer step-by-step instructions on sending an SMS, taking and sending photos, storing important contact details for emergencies and will also address questions seniors might have about their specific mobile phone. Telstra Connected Seniors is a national program designed to help older Australians learn about new technologies.Since the program ’s inception in 2007, Telstra has delivered face-face workshops to assist over 65,000 older Australians feel a sense of accomplishment by getting online and using their mobile phones as well as many more via online training support.

Cooroy Community Gardens COOROY Community Gardens are gathering momentum as the design for the gardens starts to take shape and the opening date of 1 May looms. The Driving Committee behind the gardens have started to assess the site that is located behind the Butter Factory Arts Centre and Pottery. This undeveloped area of the Mill Place precinct is open for the community to consider how they would like to see the site developed. Initial community workshops and meetings have resulted in the establishment of a Driving Committee who will guide the development of the Cooroy Community Gardens. The role of the Driving Committee, according to the Chair, Phil McManus, is to ensure that the community are involved and engaged during the garden development process. “We want to make

sure that the community see this as a space that is at the heart of the Cooroy community. We want anyone who wants to be involved to join in and be part of the gardens as they develop and grow.” The Driving Committee will guide site design and implementation activities. They plan on working with community members and businesses to develop partnerships and share resources. The Driving Committee has attracted many members including artists, horticulturalists, politicians, community leaders, health practitioners and permaculturalists. Phil McManus is looking forward to the opportunities that the garden development presents, “We have a voluntary group representing the wide variety of interests and aspirations of the community, it’s going to be a unique garden reflecting the diverse nature of the

Cooroy community.” The underpinning wish for the gardens is that they will become a place for education and demonstration. It will be a place that people can learn about health, gardening, sustainability and care for the community. The Driving Committee are focussing their efforts on an initial site assessment and analysis. This means taking into account current infrastructure, soil types, aspect, and access at the site. A proposal for the design of the gardens will be developed early next year and the community will be engaged in the process of finalising what the gardens will look like. Any enquiries regarding the Cooroy Community Gardens can be directed to Phil McManus on 5485 0818 or CooroyCommunityGardens@hotmail.com.

news Local family business keeps pace with technology

COOROY RAG KEEPING up with technological changes in any industry is a daunting challenge, but none more so than in the graphics and manufacturing sector. Local printing company, Queensland Media Print has been continually rising to this challenge ever since it began nearly 20 years ago. Owner Allan Mulcahy says that recent developments in digital technology have caused a total shift in the way many print jobs are carried out. He says that Queensland Media Print (or QMP as it is more often referred to these days) embraced digital technology about 7 years ago and in the time since has upgraded it’s equipment to keep ahead. Today QMP continues to produce much of it’s product using the traditional ‘Offset’ printing method but is increasingly printing short runs of full colour brochures, flyers, business cards and stationery using the cost and time efficient digital process.

QMP’s most recent diversification came with the introduction of Wide Format Technolgy which gives the company the ability to print Outdoor Vinyl Banners, Roller Display Banners, Car magnets, outdoor stickers plus Corflute signage to almost any size. In another move to meet the growing needs of our business community, QMP now designs and maintains websites. Websites are almost indispensable to any business in this modern era of online browsing. Allan believes that effective websites do not need to be expensive and these days websites are a necessary marketing tool that are within the reach of even the smallest one man operation. QMP has always been committed to providing local business with a high standard of product and the friendly kind of service that reflects it’s country spirit. Allan says that when he founded the business in 1992, he was keen for a change of pace and lifestyle. Both Allan and his wife Sue were born and

Steve at work bred in Cooroy and received all their education here. Allan’s first industry was Radio where he spent 20 years working in 5 Queensland commercial stations at all levels from his start as office boy at 4IP in the early 70’s to General Manager of 4ZR in Queensland’s central west. He was a familiar voice on the Sunshine Coast’s 4NA and 4SS before it became known as Mix FM. Allan says the move from Radio to Graphic Design and Printing was the result of an interest that got out of control. “I was very interested in the whole printing proc-

ess and when computerisation came to the industry in the mid eighties, I was more keen than ever to dabble and learn the trade.” he said. When the time was right to take the plunge, Allan was supported by his radio colleagues who became his biggest and most faithful client base. It was through this radio connection that Queensland Media Print got its name. Twenty years later QMP still does printing for Channel Seven and various radio stations. Today QMP is in the same location that it was when it started. This reflects Allan and Sue’s

initial desire for a change in lifestyle. Set on 2 arcres of bushland in Lamonts Road, only 2 kilometres from the heart of Cooroy, QMP offers the perfect environment for creativity while still being only 4 minutes drive from Cooroy’s business hub. As far as the future is concerned, Allan is philosophical. “We never know about the future, we can only be sure we do our very best with the present and keep our eyes open as we look ahead. We have an element of control over the future if we plan it well.” He said.

YEAR 12 graduate, Dean Tsilfidis, was awarded the Cooroy Queen Alexander Scholarship of $500 dollars by Michael Hebron of Freemasons Queensland early this year. Dean is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering at University of Queensland after turning down a job with WYSIWYG when he was still a student at Noosa High. Dean developed a passion for engineering technology early on when he joined the F1 in Schools program in year 8 and remained a committed participant for the 4 years. “He is absolutely fearless with computers and ICTs” said Mr Presling, Industrial Technology teacher at Noosa High, “and he is also a very talented graphic

designer.” Dean has a history of demonstrating focus and initiative. In 2008 he worked with a company at Yandina in an effort to interface school software with their machine in order to design superior wheels for the F1 racing car. He was also part of the International Collaborative Team for F1 that competed in London in 2009, winning best Graphic Design Folio, the Collaborative Team award and placing 3rd overall.

What lies beneath: potholes in the making MOTORISTS might understandably believe all the Coast’s road potholes from the January floods are fixed - and if they’re not, they should be. But many potholes are still rising - or yet to rise - to the surface, and council seeks your help as they finally make their debut and their potentially dangerous presence felt. As the sun beats down on us in the last throes of summer, it is important to note that the huge amount of water which fell in January has substantially raised underground water tables and that water is looking for ways to re-surface. “The floods this year were preceded by large falls earlier in the season which had

already raised the underground levels, exacerbating the flood activity in January; even now the water level is high,” council’s Civil Works Manager John Netherton said. “While motorists use council’s 3500-kilometre road network as well as those under the jurisdiction of Main Roads, our crews continue flat-out fixing reported potholes,” he said. “But often these have to be temporary repairs until such time as the road base underneath them is totally dried out.” Any attempt to permanently re-surface a road while the saturated base remains would prove to be short-lived, Mr Netherton said.

In many cases, only the constant grind of traffic using a stretch of saturated road over a period of time will ultimately develop a pothole - and that hole itself may develop quite suddenly. “Council asks that motorists be patient on Coast roads and drive to local conditions for a safe journey,” Mr Netherton said. Police have noted that the major cause of fatal accidents across the state in 2011 to date have been due to motorists not driving to the conditions. Any motorist spotting a new pothole emerging should urgently contact council on 5475 7272 or email us. Details of current road closures on the Coast can be found on our website.

beautifully restored carriages coupled with the unique sights, sound and smells of the blacksmith’s workshop kept our members both entertained and enthralled. Those young at heart jumped into the simulator to test their skills in driving a modern ‘Tilt Train’, and a much, much older locomotive engine. COOROY RAG police with Sergeant Mal Scott COOROY Police are experiencing an increase in calls for service which relate to business owners notifying police of groups of youths congregating in or near shops and other public places causing detriment to their business by bad behaviour. Police have very specific powers when it comes to situations such as this. These Powers are called “Move On Directions” and lawfully give police the ability to direct persons to “Move On” and not to return to that location or face arrest. I have been approached by a number of shop owners stating that this problem only seems to be getting worse and that they have not called the police as they were of the opinion that the police were powerless in this regard. To clear up this misconception I would like to quote the relevant legislation. The Legislation states:(1) A police officer may issue a Move On Direction in relation to a person or group of persons at or near a regulated place which includes any public place if a police officer reasonably suspects the person’s behaviour is or has been– (a) causing anxiety to a person entering, at or leaving the place, reasonably arising in all the circumstances; or (b) interfering with trade or business at the place by unnecessarily obstructing, hindering or impeding someone entering, at or leaving the place; or (c) disorderly, indecent, offensive, or threatening to someone entering, at or leaving the place; or

(d) disrupting the peaceable and orderly conduct of any event, entertainment or gathering at the place. A police officer may give to a person or group of persons doing a relevant act (described above) any direction that is reasonable in the circumstances. (a) leave the regulated place and not return or be within the regulated place within a stated reasonable time of not more than 24 hours; (b) leave a stated part of the regulated place and not return or be within the stated part of the regulated place within a stated reasonable time of not more than 24 hours; (c) move from a particular location at or near the regulated place for a stated reasonable distance, in a stated direction, and not return or be within the stated distance from the place within a stated reasonable time of not more than 24 hours. I would like to encourage anyone that is experiencing this bad behaviour anywhere within the Cooroy CBD to notify police of what is happening so we can attend and assess the situation. We can not address behaviour that we are not aware of so let us know so we can attend to deal with the matter. Our problems areas continue to be Apex Park, Maple street and the Cooroy Library.

continually comes up empty handed when visiting Cooroy he will leave us alone and visit greener pastures. In regards my last couple of articles in the Cooroy Rag it would seem that our youth are out of control due to continued bad press that this issue has gained over past months. It is important to note that it is only a very small minority who are causing the problems around town. I would estimate that the core group of offending youths number less than 15 so when you consider the big picture that is only a small minority of the kids of Cooroy. If as a community we can continue to stand up and say that this behaviour will not be tolerated in Cooroy then we will go along way to stamping out the bad element.

No further break and enter offences have occurred in the past 3 to 4 weeks but I would still like to push the point that NO CASH is kept on premises as we have been targeted by a thief who is only after cash so if he

Can I remind people that RBT is high on the priority list with Cooroy Police so expect to be pulled over and breath tested at any time. Think before you drive.

We had well over 150 kids at our last Blue Light Disco last week and all of whom were extremely well behaved so we are by no means losing the battle when it comes to the kids of Cooroy.

COOROY Scout Group is off to a good start this year with a great variety of activities planned and underway already. One of our recent highlights was sailing on the Noosa River. Cooroy Cub Scouts, Scouts and Venturer Scouts had an excellent afternoon sailing with the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club. The weather was ideal with warm conditions and just the right amount of wind to ensure everyone had a pleasant sail. NYRC provided all the boats, equipment, support and instructors ensuring a safe and fun learning activity for the children and a worry free afternoon for the adults. All our scouts received personal attention and enjoyed hands on experience steering and trimming the sails. They finished the day with a fun race where they were able to practice their new skills before heading in and unrigging. A big thank you to Paul Blundell and all the youth instructors at NYRC for providing such an excellent afternoon on the water. Some of our future scouting events include a night hike for the scouts in preparation for a weekend navigation challenge, an expedition for the Venturers and a bike hike along the Noosa

River for the cub scouts. Well done to our leaders and Venturer Scouts who successfully renewed and completed their first aid and CPR training recently. As usual, our Group used the services of Safetywave First Aid Training in Tewantin run by Steve Fitzpatrick. Thank you Steve for an educational, informative (and entertaining) course once again. Upcoming Community events: CAR BOOT SALE - Sunday 3rd April 2011 - Stalls; Pony rides; Sausage sizzle, tea, coffee and drinks; Scout activity display. At the Cooroy Scout Den, Mary River Road, Cooroy. Book a site or cme and buy. Contact Keeley 5447 6737 or Kathy 5485 2368. Site fee $10 per site - Set up time 7am. IF you’ve noticed a hive of activity recently at the Diamond St Shopping Centre, then you’re not the only one! While working on the new shop fit-out, Subway Franchisee Jason Sandford-Bell, was asked by a passer by what kind of business was going into the empty premises. “Subway” he replied. The passerby looked confused as he asked “Do they know?” referring to the current Subway just a few doors away. The answer is of course, yes! Jason , who also has Subway stores in Coolum Beach, Tewantin, Noosa Civic, and two in Sunshine Plaza, employing over 75 locals, was eager to expand the Cooroy store – literally! “Originally, the current store was the only premises vacant in Cooroy in 2007, so we opened the Subway. However, Subway has been so popular in Cooroy that the premises were no longer big enough. We only had minimal seating, storage and we literally couldn’t fit any more customers into the store,” Jason explains. “So, when this opportunity arose, we just knew it was the right move”. The new location will be an innovative concept for Subway Sunshine Coast with an extended seating area including a designated coffee lounge. “We have a new coffee machine arriving that makes a great tasting coffee, so it will be an excellent venue for people to meet and relax as well as continuing to enjoy their subs, wraps, salads and catering platters”. With over 15 locals staffing the store, many of whom start as school kids and only leave to go to Uni, Subway is proud to be a part of the local economy. “The local community has made Subway one of its own, so we are really excited to be able to expand the business and offer more to the Cooroy and surrounding communities.” The new premises is due to open on Wednesday 30th of March.

A great effort by the young SES cadets and their supervisors, who got out there in mass numbers to get the job done! Well done to everyone to who took part! Their wildly different stories entertained and inspired the audience. In addition, Aimee Stanyer from Focus, Division of General Practice invited guests to participate in the morning by asking them to consider, “What are some of the important changes you have seen in your lifetime?” and, “What advice would you give a young woman about coping with change?” Some of the great suggestions include: • Feel your worth and value as a woman • Always look at the positives • Don’t be frightened by change, change is growth and without change there is no growth • Remember to take time for yourself • Try to be flexible and open-minded – we are learners for life – throughout life! • It’s OK not to have the answer • Be yourself The morning was capped off with a truly

Problem learners may suffer poor vision SIXTY per cent of children who are “problem learners have been found to suffer from undetected vision problems, warn local optometrists Heather McLeod and Jenny Currie, who are encouraging all parents to have their children’s eyes tested, particularly if they are not performing to their potential. Undetected vision problems are estimated to affect approximately one in four Australian children – or 600,000 nationally – which may contribute to potential learning difficulties in reading, writing, viewing a whiteboard, computer use and other classroom activities. The Optometrists Association Australia recently launched its first Children’s Vision Day on 10 March 2011, themed “good vision, good learning”, to raise awareness about the importance of looking after the health of children’s eyes throughout their schooling. A recent review undertaken as part of the National Children’s Vision Screening Project reported most children with academic or behavioural problems fail one or more visual tests. “With 80% of what children learn

coming through their vision information processing, we know that vision plays a significant part in the learning process for a child and there’s a definite link between some vision impairments and educational outcomes,” says Heather. “We all rely on good vision to see clearly and sharply. Vision problems can make learning difficult and stressful and prevent children from achieving their full potential.” “Parents and teachers should watch for signs that a child may have a vision problem, including avoidance of reading and writing, blurred vision or discomfort with reading and writing, problems with comprehension and short attention span” adds Jenny. “Most importantly, most vision problems amongst school-aged children can be easily managed if detected early”. All children should have their eyes examined by an optometrist prior to starting school and regularly thereafter to detect and manage vision problems promptly. For further information please contact optometry@cooroy at 62 Maple Street, Cooroy or phone 5442 5555 for an appointment. www.optometryat cooroy.com.au

Bio-Energy Medicine - utilizing state of the art ‘Bio-Resonance Device’ CAN you believe it? New-generation bioenergetic medicine has arrived in Pomona. Suzanne White is a Homoeopath who has fallen under the spell of this amazing device and is bringing its magic to the Hinterland. “The ‘Bio-Resonance Device’ works exclusively with all levels of the patient’s immune system,” says Suzanne. “This healing system treats physical, mental and emotional imbalances. All the functions of the human body are controlled by electromagnetic signals (EM signals). “The ‘Bio-Resonance Device’ reads the EM signals in your body and compares them with a data base of over 120,000 known EM signatures of allergens, viruses, bacteria, damaged cells, etc. It also reads the disruptions caused by interference fields of elec-

trical appliances, microwaves, mobile phones, geopathic stress, chemicals, heavy metals, dental material, food additives (etc.) “As well as inducing unpleasant and disturbing symptoms, these external influences are capable of causing all kinds of diseases, such as: asthma, arthritis, candida, epilepsy, heart problems, emotional disturbances, chronic fatigue, diseases of the organs – and the list goes on. “The device doesn’t diagnose illness. It measures the degree of disturbance in the energetic resonance of one’s bodily system. The further the energetic frequencies of the system are from optimal health is the degree to which the immune system needs to correct the situation. Our immune system exists to protect us from all kinds of illnesses, even

against body cells that have degenerated for various reasons. “However, because of the toxic soup we live in in this present age the immune system becomes like a blindfolded boxer – strong but blind! The ‘Bio-Resonance Device’ restores its sight. This device is a highly accurate non-invasive diagnostic tool which also creates a custom made remedy specifically for each person,” says Suzanne. You can contact Suzanne on 5485 2529 or 0432 240 630.

WITH a world in transition Niranjan at Suba Hevana believes it is important that everyone learns to meditate. Speaking at the studio in the Evergreen Lifestyle Centre Niranjan said learning to meditate is not so hard. “In fact it is easy and simple, anyone can meditate,” said Niranjan. “Meditation helps us to be aware of our inner world which is made up of thoughts and feelings. “Meditation also allows us to go beyond thoughts and feelings and get in touch with our essence, the consciousness behind life itself. “During these challenging time we are living in, to relieve the inner tensions and

health

Learn to Meditate frustrations that we feel, it is good to take up a more constructive method like meditation to unblock the inner tensions.” “It is important for us to understand the power of meditation that connects to happiness that is within us all. “Meditation helps us to understand ourselves deeply and helps us to face life’s challenges and bring inner peace. “Learning to meditate is a gift that you give yourself.” For the past three years Suba Hevana has offered meditation classes in Noosa and

If birthday candles were lit to match their years the 188 flames would have set the fire alarms ringing! Myra, 95 years young, celebrated with her daughters Joan and Patsy and their husbands while Murray, a foundation member of the Cooroy Probus Club and celebrating 93 years, had a surprise visit from the current Probus President, Michael Fayne. WITH increasing pressures in everyday life the medical fraternity constantly prescribes the latest pill suggested by the drug companies. In some instances they work but often they don’t. Stress is increasing proportionally to people’s search for holistic practitioners to lead them out of a life of misery. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is currently considered one of the most powerful tools you can use to expand personal development at a rate unrealisable in most other forms of therapy. ‘All the stress we face in life is created by programs. These programs are created by our conscious mind in response to ongoing pressure of individual environments. By adjusting some and eliminating others we take control of our lives. Unless these programs are altered people often face a life of interminable therapy but three effective NLP sessions can and will open doors to your unconscious mind. In a typical session questions are asked that seem ‘a bit out there’ but that’s the linguistic element of NLP. Whatever your unconscious mind says... however it reacts you can bet your life that it’s something you need to become aware of. Search NLP on the web and discover what a boon it may represent to you if stress is affecting the happiness levels in your life. Phone Unconscious Connections 5472 0080. Pilates and Osteoarthritis WHAT Is Pilates? Pilates, named after its creator Joseph Pilates, is an exercise system that focuses on the core postural muscles that keep the body balanced and the spine in healthy alignment. Pilates was first developed in the early 1900s to improve Joseph Pilate’s health and that of fellow World War I prisoners of war. In the 1980s, Pilates regained popularity among anyone interested in its health benefits. Pilates can be taught using special Pilates equipment in settings that are private or semi-private. There are also group mat classes (performed on mats) that do not use equipment. Pilates Equipment - Essentially, there are three pieces of equipment used with Pilates: The Reformer; The Cadillac; The Wunda Chair. Mat exercises focus on strengthening the trunk muscles and hip muscles while increasing the flexibility of the spine and hips. Who Benefits from Pilates? Pilates is a great form of exercise for arthritis patients who shy away from exercise, which they feel they cannot do. Pilates is gentle — it does not stress your joints or add burden to ligaments and cartilage that surround the joints. Instead, Pilates is based

on these principles: Mental focus is used to perfect movements and muscle control; Awareness of proper spine position is vital while exercising; Development of deep muscles of the back and abdomen supports proper posture; Breathing techniques are used to promote mental focusing and centering; Lengthening, strengthening and flexibility increases in the muscles. How Pilates May Help Osteoarthritis Pilates can offer many health benefits. Specific to osteoarthritis, lengthening your body through Pilates movements might help relieve soreness. Stretching is thought to help with blood flow and the delivery of nutrients to muscles and tendons. Better circulation may also serve to relieve aches and stiffness. Subtle improvements in posture may result in fewer aches and pains, too. All Pilates exercises start in your core (your abdomen), stay in your core and end in your core. Before trying Pilates exercises, you must learn how to move from your core, and only then will you be able to realize the full benefit of Pilates. Should You Start a Pilates Program Today? Because you have a chronic medical condition, check to be sure your doctor has no objection to you beginning a Pilates pro-

gram. Most likely, your doctor will encourage your participation rather than discourage it. Contact Intouch Physio on 5442 5666.

THIS unique home has a classic European influence highlighted by excellent craftsmanship, timber walls, exposed beams, high raked ceilings and skylights which add detail and a light airy feel and warmth to the living areas. A mixture of Australian hardwood timbers floors are showcased throughout the entire house and a wood fire heater adds to the ambiance and creates the perfect centerpiece for those cosy winter nights. SINCE the current Cooroy Gymnastics building was opened in December 1995, locals of all ages and skill level have made their way to Cooroy Sports Complex. But it’s not just for gymnasts. The club runs adult fitness classes, teen fitness classes as well as trampolining for those who wish to purely learn flips. Each term over 300 gymnasts participate in Kindergym and after-

noon programs. The club also hosts special needs children from our local schools, allowing them to experience the gymnasium. Manager of Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Fiona Hutchings was delighted to hand over a $1,500 sponsorship cheque to Cooroy Gymnastics Club President, Craig Jones this week towards new equipment for the club. “We see it as a great fit for Cooroy Gymnastics and our Community Bank,” Mr. Jones said. “As our many members know, Cooroy Gymnastics is a wonderful family club and it’s great to have had our Cooroy Community Bank’s support in recent years, and we’re thrilled to have them on board for an-

other year. As many locals are learning, the Bendigo gives back to its community and their sponsorship of the club has given us a lot to be excited about during 2011.” Those sentiments were echoed by Ms. Hutchings. “Cooroy Gymnastics Club is made up of great people who have built their club from the ground up. The club just seems to be busy and filled with so many age groups just having fun. It’s just wonderful to see so many smiling faces. Our Cooroy Community Bank of Bendigo Bank sees our sponsorship as a great way to support the club now and in the years ahead”, Ms. Hutchings added. If you would like to know more about

sport Noosa Pirates kick off the season with a great start

COOROY RAG

U9’s Zack and Bailey NOOSA Pirates Juniors travelled far and wide over the weekend with some great results. The players have been training hard over the past fortnight in the wet con-

ditions and enjoyed the rewards of the first game of the year with new and old players coming together our teams played in the true spirit of the game.

U7Gold played fantastic footy at Beachmere on Saturday with strong defence and some dashing attack. These boys were very impressive showing that the future of the Pirates is in good hands. The crowd at Beachmere was further entertained from U8 Gold with some great tries, impressive defence and tackles being made close to their line. Special mention to Michael who scored his first try in his, first game of rugby league. Kawana saw U8 Blues’ Liam Langton tackle his heart out and a courageous defensive effort from all the boys proving they will be a team to watch this season. U10 Gold put in a huge effort for first game of season with some hot attack and solid defence on our line. With size and speed they were too much for the opposition; as were U11 Gold playing in Beachmere. With new front rowers James ‘Bronco’ Bray and Cecil ‘the steam roller’ Christenson taking the ball to the line all day,

the boys were too strong for the courageous hosts. Great effort boys, all the makings of a great season ahead! U12 Gold started the year in great style belting last year’s premiers by 48 to nil. The guys were right on song from the start with some brutal defence and some exciting attack. As we know this is only the first game but it is a great way to kick off another big year. The whole team played well with Jacko, Ali, Locky, Glen and Asher the stand outs. Our three new players Jackson Rau, Nick Aylward and little Brin Lloyd who scored his first try for the mighty pirates. Showing encouraging play, Noosa U12 Blue, with outstanding efforts from Taon Mulcahy, Connah Camilleri and Jonathon Lowth joined a well drilled Coolum for the whole fifty minutes in an entertaining game. Great work guys! U13’s travelled to Caboolture with the Caboolture running away with the game from the Golds in the last seven minutes; however

Noosa never gave up and showed great promise of things to come this year. Final score 30 – 18. The Blue team played a close contest but were too hard to beat in the end with a fantastic display of footy finishing with a score of Noosa 30 to Caboolture 24. U14’s also headed south, to Bribie and had a tough day at the office a few players out but coach Mick looks forward to a stronger performance next week. Our thanks to the Noosa Seniors for holding Friday nights’ game at Pirate Park that saw our U15’s take on the Caloundra premiers. Although going down in the end, the boys showed their potential by winning the second half. Friday night had great results for the U16’s playing in the nine a side comp at Maroochydore. The boys had a blinder of a night with a win over Palmwoods, loss to Beerwah and a win over Bribie Island; last year’s winners. The team only had one reserve due to an injury and all played fantastic footy.
