Christmas is coming to town March 25, 2020

FREE

Energex donated their time and resources to get the Christmas tree erected and decorated this year, along with other community members: Barry Hamlet, Kevin Smith, Richard Oxborough and Frank Voeten

BY ALEX PURCELL IT’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas. The iconic Christmas tree on the roundabout in Maple Street is erected and Christmas is coming to town in the form of Christmas in Cooroy on December 4. Like many things in 2020, Christmas in Cooroy will look a whole lot different this year. However, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President Chris Bell told the Cooroy Rag they are dedicated to spreading some sparkle around the community. “Due to the COVID-19 restrictions on holding events, there will be no street parade this year, no Santa Race and no fireworks. “Instead, the attention is on late night trading in Cooroy

from 5.30pm to 8.00pm on Friday, December 4. Most of the local retailers are on board and will be keen to welcome shoppers with special offers and promotions. It’s been a tough year so come and show them your support.” As well as the annual Christmas lights competition, local businesses will be competing for the best dressed Christmas window. “Cooroy Country Jeanery and Menswear will be keen to make it three wins in a row. Who is going to stop them?” Another first time novelty this year is the Crazy Christmas Bikes Competition, which will start down near the Library and end at the top end of town. “Let the imagination run wild as there will be great prizes on offer for the best dressed bike and rider. It is

open to all ages up to 16 years. In the Memorial Hall, the Doo Wop Dolls will be on stage performing their Christmas show with beautiful harmonies and classic authentic costumes. All ages are guaranteed a wonderful time.” “Social distancing doesn’t mean that kids can’t get a photo with Santa but they will find him in his marquee in front of the Memorial Hall, along with his helpers and photo booth.” “Busking around town will be The Cherry Ripes. These two fun loving grey haired sisters from Kandanga take their music very seriously but others consider them a musical comedy duo. You will hear them coming, guaranteed.” Continued on page 2

Meet your new Rag staff

Continued from page 1

AFTER the Cooroy Rag community newspaper was closed down in March due to COVID, a team of dedicated and experienced locals came on board to resurrect what is believed to be the only non-profit newspaper in Australia. The first edition back went off with a bang and every edition since then has been bigger and better than the one before. And while it is the advertisers whose support of this newspaper makes it possible in the first place, it is the new staff who work hard to give the community the voice it deserves. So, without further ado, it is time to introduce your new Rag staff, whose passion and experience and local knowledge are what makes this paper a cut above the rest.

Editor: Alex Purcell

Ventriloquist Eric Read and his mate Sparky, who recently appeared on Channel Nine’s Millionaire Hot Seat will drop by and superheroes Spiderman and Wonder Woman will be working their magic, having fun with bubbles and balloon twisting while stilt walkers, Leonie and Jazz from Nova Star Productions wander about town. “The classic ham wheel is back again this year with Gary and Brett, who will be selling off several draws for leg hams and other Christmas goodies during the evening. “And a number of local eateries will have goodies on offer, as well as the Cooroy Rotary who will be firing up the barbie for their traditional sausage sizzle.” There will also be entertainment at the Little Shop of Soul courtyard. “So, bring the kids down town and make an evening of it,” Chris said. MANY would remember Alex as Alex Rumley. Born and raised in Cooroy, Alex is the daughter of teacher Gillian Bradley and attended Cooroy Kindergarten, Cooroy State Primary School and Noosa District State High School. Since discovering writing at a young age, Alex has always known she wanted to be a writer. Heading to Uni after high school, Alex obtained a Bachelor of Communications with a double major in Journalism and Creative Writing from the University of the Sunshine Coast. After writing and managing editorial for a number of national magazines, Alex moved into online as the editor of Finda, a people and events website owned by APN.

From there, she became a key member in APN and later News Corp’s online team which oversaw the management of 56 online news websites in Queensland and New South Wales. In this role, Alex wrote some of the mostread stories on the network and plans to bring this experience to the Rag with a new news website in the future. Alex also spent several years as the social media editor for News Corp’s News Regional Media, managing the social networks for the 56 newspapers, training journalists in the best use of social media and developing strategies for the group, one of which came second to the New York Times in an international media award for best use of social media. Today, Alex has her own successful digital and social media marketing company with clients Australia wide. She loves being the editor of the Cooroy Rag and interviewing interesting people, writing stories about what’s happening and giving a voice back to the community she grew up in and loves. Alex lives in Pomona with her family, husband Matt and children, Harry and Chloe.

community as it is today and we believe, it is still the only newspaper in Australia owned and supported by the businesses that financially support it. During 2000 and 2009 the Cooroy Rag team won two Sunshine Coast small business awards and Judy was awarded the Community Service Award in 2006 by The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce. After the shutdown of the paper earlier this year due to COVID, Judy volunteered to help put the paper once again back on the streets. And once again it has been hugely supported by local businesses, so much so that the last three editions have been the largest monthly papers the Cooroy Rag has ever produced. Judy was offered the opportunity to stay on along with an experienced team of dedicated workers and has accepted the challenge. If you haven’t met her yet, be assured you will, as the Cooroy Rag Community Newspaper team is all about support and communication with our local businesses. Judy lives in Cootharaba with her husband, Ray.

MANY would know Judy from her years on the Cooroy Rag. But what many mightn’t know, is Judy is the reason the Cooroy Rag is the community newspaper it is today. In 2000, Judy and former Cooroy local Deb Boyle were given the opportunity to resurrect the Cooroy Rag. With huge support from the local businesses, it was quickly back on the streets and it was so popular, other newspapers started circling wanting to buy it. So, Judy suggested the ownership be transferred to the community, ensuring better continuity and creating the ability to financially flow back into the

Since returning to Australia she has worked in advertising, Steve Parish Publishing and since moving the the Coast, she has worked freelance as a designer for the Eumundi Green. Lil brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the production of the Cooroy Rag and is a vauled member of the team. She lives in Cooroy with her husband, Paul and daughters Isabel and Rose.

Accident takes out street library THE popular street library on the corner of Elm and Gem Streets in Cooroy has been damaged by a car. Owner, Michelle Vercoe said it was an accident and she hopes to have the library back up and running shortly. “Unfortunately, overnight someone has reversed into my fence, crushing the front doors of the library. "I hope to have it fixed and up and running again in a week or so and hopefully my fence will be fixed at some stage as well." Michelle said she installed the library earlier in the year after she saw an opportunity to share her love for reading with others. "I am an avid reader and just as COVID was kicking off and all the libraries were closed, I saw an opportunity. "We get so much foot traffic past our house and I thought I could share my passion for reading with the community." Michelle said her family made her the red and yellow library box which she registered and hung on the fence outside her house.

“It's a proper street library that I have registered online with Street Library Australia. I’ve called it Enchanting on Elm Street. "Since I put it up, it has been so popular. There are no rules, people can take one or many books. They can also leave books of their own but I just went and bought a heap from Carol at Belvedere Newsagency - a few Enid Blyton titles among them." Once mended, you will find Enchanting on Elm Street on the corner of Elm and Gem Streets, Cooroy.

December. With the school year fast coming to a close, this recruitment drive is hoped to attract some locals, both new and old, with a strong sense of community, to start an exciting new chapter in Cooroy.

NOOSA Mayor Clare Stewart has called for an urgent independent assessment to be completed on the Pomona Kin Kin Road. Cr Stewart has flagged the idea in a letter to Transport Minister Mark Bailey and the DirectorGeneral of Transport and Main Roads. “We need this road to become a priority for the newly elected government,” she said. “The independent expert review would include a detailed report on the safety and suitability of the Pomona Kin Kin Road and provide a risk analysis and subsequent recommendations.” Cr Stewart has called on the Minister and Director General asking that the report be conducted as an immediate priority, given the safety issues associated with the road. Hinterland residents told council they fear the worst, with up to 69 quarry trucks driving in and out of the quarry everyday. That means 138 truck movements in total every day. In her letter, Cr Stewart said the community is rightly outraged with many suffering mentally because of the toll the trucks are taking on the community. Cr Stewart told the Minister, a number of residents speak of feeling ‘trapped’, being too frightened to leave their homes and drive along the road because of the narrowness and unsuitability of the road to handle both trucks and cars at the same time. “We are strongly advocating for the community and will continue to support residents where we can, so I hope by writing to the relevant minister and department, we see the appropriate response from the State Government,” Cr Stewart said. Cr Stewart has asked Noosa MP Sandy Bolton to send a letter of support to the Minister and relevant state department. Council plans to engage a barrister to scrutinise the Quarry Management Plan Approval, has issued nearly 27,000 in fines for alleged breaches

Transport Minister Mark Bailey to the QMP and staff are continually monitoring traffic movements from the quarry. “This council has been very active in listening to the residents and taking action where appropriate,” Cr Stewart said. Cr Stewart said Council is unable to make any changes to the approvals or the haulage route without Cordwell Resources making an application to change it. Council has facilitated several roundtable discussions to provide a forum for all parties, including the quarry operator, to address issues and have positive talks about possible solutions. “The roundtable talks have been effective, but upgrades to the road and safety improvements are the responsibility of the State Government, so we need them to be part of future discussions,” Cr Stewart said.

to step out in style

John Diprose, Sandy Bolton, Sue Hoskin, Frank Wilkie, Llew O'Brien and Marty Hunt THE new memorial mosaics on the wall of the Cooroy RSL have been recognised for the first time in an official photo shoot. Federal Member Llew O'Brien, State Members Marty Hunt and Sandy Bolton, Noosa Councillor Frank Wilkie, members of the Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch, artist Sue Hoskin and members of the public attended the event at the end of September. Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch member John Diprose said the mosaic is laid out in three parts representing “the Royal Australian Navy, The Royal Australian Air Force and the Australian

Army foot soldier, cavalry, dog squad and nursing. “The First Australians are acknowledged with the depiction of the possum ‘Kurui’ the aboriginal name for Cooroy.” The artworks were completed by local mosaic artist Sue Hoskin with funding made available through Federal Government grant “Stronger Communities” via the office of Llew O'Brien, federal member for Wide Bay, Cooroy RSL Citizens Club, Brian Stanford and Cooroy RSL Sub Branch. If you have not seen the mosaic yet, take the time to go and have a look and take a photo or two.

round the regions Come visit yesterday ■ ■ ■

BY CELESTE FRANCES SCOTT THIS month, I invite you to discover the rich history and heritage culture that is my backyard. The Mary Valley comes under the umbrella of the greater Gympie Region with the town of Gympie situated on the beautiful Mary River. Gympie has an important and colourful history being cited as the "Town that saved Queensland from Bankruptcy”. James Nash was the man who did just that in 1867 when he claimed his place in history as being the person who first discovered gold after the government of the day offered a reward for gold found within 90 miles of Brisbane. The Gympie Town Hall is built on that very site. That call for gold brought the hills and valleys alive with prospectors bringing life, farming, families, and amazing stories to this area. I encourage you to visit The Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum as it provides a fascinating peek for every Queenslander into our history. Next month, I will take you onboard The Mary Valley Rattler as the story continues on how she too played an integral part in shaping this chapter in the history of our beautiful Sunshine State. ■ ■ ■

Meals on Wheels local heroes

BY KAREN FINZEL MEALS on Wheels Pomona has been in operation since 1989 when local volunteers Betty Maher and Brenda Goody began serving $1 meals to elderly residents in need. It did not take long and the service increased to preparing 170 meals per week.

Page 6 - Cooroy Rag, November 2020

Betty Maher is recognised as a ‘local hero’ and now in her 90s, is still living in her home in Pomona. Betty has fond memories of those early days organising volunteers and preparing meals out of the Pomona Memorial Hall kitchen. Meals on Wheels is an iconic Australian Non-for-Profit organisation that has been bringing local communities together for more than 60 years. Over the years the Pomona Meals on Wheels service has expanded to deliver nutritious midday meals prepared from locally sourced fresh produce, delivered with a smile by dedicated volunteers to people’s homes in the surrounding Noosa Hinterland suburbs. If you are interested in volunteering or having a meal delivered please call 5485 1777. ■ ■ ■

remained engaged through the COVID restrictions. More than 93 per cent of students achieved a “C” or above across English, Maths and Science. The recent Kind Kids Festival was a week-long celebration of student and community resilience with drumming workshops. wellbeing and team building exercises and art make-and-take sessions led by a visiting local artist. A long-held school tradition, Arts in the Garden, was this year extended to include all grades. Students enjoyed creating vertical bamboo gardens, miniature terrariums, nature weaving crowns, seed pod paintings and clay nature prints. The KKSS Playgroup operates at the school on Thursdays from 9.00-10.30am in a reinvigorated play space. Louise says, “Our playgroup continues to grow but we are keen to have more families enrol at the school, especially in the P2, to ensure the continued healthy and vibrant growth of the community”. ■ ■ ■

Who are you?

BY NARELLE SCHUH KIN Kin State School (KKSS) offers a personalised learning experience for students and their families beyond the norms of integrated school curricula and works on maximising and prioritising individuals’ strengths and opportunities. KKSS has long been regarded for its outstanding Kitchen Garden Program with school and community members embracing the environmentally-centred and unique resource located within its grounds. Principal, Louise Parry says, “We ensure that the Kitchen Garden is an area of comfort, rest and learning where students are able to connect with their selves, others and the environment. Recently, the school's Arts Expo saw Specialist Music Teacher, Anna Oakley share her knowledge and experience to develop an event that showcased the talents of each and every student. Class teachers presented visual arts displays of creative and imaginative pieces of student artwork over the year. The annual P&C Spring raffle was live streamed on the school’s Facebook page and exceeded fundraising expectations even in these challenging COVID times. During COVID, a Learning at Home Program was developed with the option of both paper-based and online learning modules, with Semester 1 achievement summaries confirming students

BY MIA HACKER I HAVE worked for 22 years in the digital media industry with a sharp focus on creative expression for the past 10 years. Recently this has pivoted towards immersion in place with natural mediums and connection with cultural knowledge and journey. For 16 years, events and festivals have paved the way for sharing my creative digital eye for detail in the world that surrounds us. My international imagery utilised over the past eight years shares analysis of space and place in both urban and natural environments of Los Angeles and London. These works ask the viewer to look deeper and question what is this an artwork of? I plan to exhibit a new direction of expression that explores my evolving connection to country and immersion in bush environments and places of cultural significance, giving deeper response to feeling and thinking and making connections with aspects of bark, earth, leaves, feathers, shadows spirit and changes with time. news

From Mayor Clare’s desk THERE has been much community concern around the operation of the Kin Kin quarry. Noosa Council will engage a barrister to review all aspects of the Kin Kin Quarry approval (Quarry Management Plan). It’s imperative that we have the best legal advice possible to help determine if there is anything we can do regarding the current approval, which was granted back in the 1980s by the then council. There is now a lot more demand for construction materials and the quarry’s operations far exceed initial expectations. In short, circumstances have materially changed. We’ve heard the community’s concerns about the number of trucks coming and going from this site and the safety of the designated route and we are all doing as much as we can, within the constraints that we have, to stand with the community on this issue. As the year continues to fly by and we find ourselves in November, it was pleasing to see councils across Queensland come together at the recent Local Government Conference which Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie and I attended. More importantly, it was fantastic that the majority of Queensland councils backed Noosa Council’s motion calling for a review of the way costs are awarded when councils are forced to defend their planning scheme in court. For years, councils across Queensland have had to foot much of the bill to defend their decisions to refuse planning applications even though the proposed development may have been in significant conflict with the town plan. With a vote of 201 to 15 in support of our motion, it means that we’ve won the first major battle in reducing the huge cost to ratepayers when it comes to defending our planning

decisions. The LGAQ can now lobby the Queensland Government to review how appeal costs are awarded where a development proposal is found to significantly conflict with the council’s planning scheme. As we edge closer to Christmas it is wonderful to see our ever popular free buses, including the loop bus, back on the road this Christmas. Subject to Translink approval, travel will be free on a number of Translink services from 12 December 2020- 26 January 2021. The loop bus will service stops along Noosa Drive, Weyba Road and Noosa Parade to make getting around town far easier and cost effective. Our other Go Noosa initiatives such as park-and-ride facilities and extra parking at Noosa Heads (in the form of paid parking) in the Lions Park will return. With more people able to get out and about at Christmas, it will hopefully go some way toward helping our local businesses bounce back after a tough year due to Covid-19. Talking about tough years, the ‘Connecting Noosa’ November program is out now. 2020 has been a year like no other and ‘Connecting Noosa’ is a Council initiative to help residents to reconnect with friends and make new ones, by coming together to take part in free community activities which include yoga, tai chi, tech talks, sewing, dance and art classes. For more information please visit noosa.qld.gov.au for details. Until next month, stay safe, Clare.

Lake Macdonald dam upgrade

THE Lake Macdonald Dam (Six Mile Creek Dam) is scheduled to be upgraded as part of Seqwater’s Dam Improvement Program. It will be the first major safety upgrade to the dam since it was raised in 1980. Like all major infrastructure, dams are regularly assessed and upgraded to comply with modern engineering guidelines and national standards. The safety upgrade will involve; temporarily lowering the water level, catching and relocating aquatic fauna, removing the existing dam and spillway structure and rebuilding a new dam and spillway in the same location. The early works activities for the project are currently underway and construction for the replacement of the road bridge to the Noosa Water Treatment Plant is expected to commence this month.

Q&A with Sandy Bolton HOW are you feeling about winning the election? Incredibly humbled, honoured and privileged. As well excited for what we can continue to achieve together. Anything you would like to say to voters in the Noosa Shire? Words cannot convey the gratitude in efforts to keep Noosa independent. Your voices, and votes are very powerful and this election sent a very clear message. Thank you everyone for your fabulous support and efforts, and I look forward to seeing you over the coming weeks! Tell us a bit about yourself personally: what do you like to do in your downtime, hobbies, interests. Downtime is a rarity! However as soon as I get a day, it is spent with family, and as a self confessed crazy repurposer, a trip to the tip where nothing is safe! As well, love any moments outdoors, with our pooch Jet and my much better ‘half’ Shoey! Where's your favourite place to go in the shire? Everywhere! We have so many hidden treasures from trails in the hinterland, to shady pockets along the North Shore (very welcomed when the sand is ‘hotplate’ hot!!). My dream would be to just meander through our shops without a timeframe – we have so many unique offerings and really cool Noosa biz that it would take weeks. What can you tell us about the plans for Cooroy/Pomona area? Our stunning country Noosa has a number of priorities, with the inappropriate volume of heavy haulage vehicles which are impacting residents, businesses, and our infrastructure being an urgency . A combined effort to address is underway including myself, Mayor Clare,

Noosa Council staff, police, the Department of Main Roads & Transport (DTMR) and representatives from the community. Another, which is exciting, is the start of the Six Mile Bridge #7 replacement. I, with so many who have worked on this, are eager to see the shovel in the ground in 2021! Commencement dates are still being finalized, however the completion date was originally set for mid 2022. Now that you have been voted back in, are there any other plans you have for Cooroy/Pomona area that we haven't heard about yet? Connectivity and accessibility continue to be an advocacy including connecting to the Brisbane train timetables and filling the pathway ‘gaps’ for pedestrians and cyclists. We await the finalisation of Noosa Council’s Master Plan so we can advocate for reclassifications of sections such as the Cooran Pomona links if needed as well the funding required. Even though these are not in the Noosa electorate, I will continue to support the Nicklin MP regarding the Cooroy intersections to get these resolved. DTMR held consultation previously on the signalization and works associated as a solution, and we have been waiting on the outcomes of this, which have been frustratingly slow! How blessed we are to live in such an incredible community, with beauty in our people and places. After living here for three decades, I still pinch myself on how fortunate we are, and I hope you do as well!

Addressing issues and tackling projects in the hinterland BY SANDY BOLTON MP Member for Noosa WE have not yet officially formed the 57th Parliament, however, are close with much to do before Christmas! Sittings also need to cover budgets and estimates which are a lengthy process and given the past year, not easy! Representation for me is not about a set of lines on a map. A small amount of East Cooroy sits within the Noosa Electorate, alongside Lake MacDonald, Cooran, Kin Kin and Pomona. The Cooroy township is vitally important to many of my constituents and myself, and I look forward to working with whoever represents the Nicklin Electorate to ensure good outcomes for both sides of that ‘boundary’! There are several issues of high priority in our beautiful hinterland. One is the inappropriate volume of heavy haulage vehicles which are impacting residents, businesses, and infrastructure. This is a combined effort including myself, Mayor Clare, Noosa Council, police, Department of Main Roads & Transport and representatives from the community. Updates can be found at www.sandybolton.com Noosa 360 or contact my office on 5319 3100. An exciting event will be the start of the Six Mile Bridge #7 replacement, and many of us are eager to see that shovel in the ground in 2021! Connectivity and accessibility are vital from within the electorate to exterior such as connecting to the Brisbane train timetables. Filling the pathway ‘gaps’ for pedestrian and cycling has been a high

priority for many, as without safe options the shift away from cars will remain as is, an aspiration instead of a realisation. We await the finalisation of Noosa Council’s Master Plan so we can advocate for reclassifications if needed and required funding. For further updates please join us on Facebook at Sandy Bolton MP, subscribe to our monthly newsletter via www.sandybolton.com, or for any State Government matters, simply contact either myself on noosa@parliament.qld.gov.au or Nicklin office on nicklin@parliament.qld.gov.au Blessings to all and see you on the Christmas trail if Parliament allows! Funds for tech to help fight bushfires

Cooroy history in pictures

BY LLEW O’BRIEN Federal Member for Wide Bay THIS time last year, Australia was heading into one of the worst bushfire seasons in recent memory as flames tore through vast swathes of our country including areas of Noosa. While the devastation caused by these fires may have since been overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic, bushfire recovery is very much still underway, and the Morrison Government is committed to sticking with fire-affected regions for the long haul. We’re also committed to supporting the development of world-first technologies to help detect and fight bushfires, to protect smaller communities like Cooroy and help put out blazes before they can take hold and this technology is being developed right on our doorstep at Noosa Council’s Digital Hub. The Digital Hub will receive $200,000 in federal grants to deliver their world-first FireTech Connect commercialisation program for promising bushfire-resilience technologies, including $100,000 through the Morrison Government’s Incubator Support Initiative’s Expert in Residence (EIR) component, an element of the Entrepreneurs’ Programme. A further $100,000 through the Regional Tourism Bushfire Recovery Grants program will help the start-ups put their technology on the world stage, with a

Noosa tech company Fireball International will receive $500,000 through the Entrepreneurs' Programme for an innovative new system that could detect bushfires in as little as three minutes, allowing for rapid response and control. This innovative technology will reduce significantly both the human and financial cost of wildfires such as those seen in Noosa and, on a greater scale, across Australia last summer. As we head into another summer bushfire season, these grants provide a critical support mechanism to potentially prevent future bushfires. They will boost the region’s technology sector, and get innovative companies and visitors back into the Noosa area, further stimulating our economy.

The presentation by the Tinbeerwah community BY LINDA SIVYER ON August 26, 1916 the Cooroy district took part in ”Do Without Week” to raise funds for the War effort. According to Trove NLA, the Gympie Times and Mary River Mining Gazette on Saturday, September 2, 1916 reported: “The effort made by Cooroy to assist our wounded soldiers and their dependents, was brought to a conclusion last Saturday with a carnival and procession. It can safely be said that it was one of the most unqualified successes that has yet been recorded on the North Coast line. Cooroy and outside districts, especially Tinbeerwah, Cooroy West and Mary River road, must be congratulated on such a fine result. The total amount raised was 250 pounds!”

The Magic of Aladdin comes alive at Good Shepherd

THE story you know and love was given the royal treatment by local school students at Good Shepherd Lutheran College. Brought to life with an explosion of vivid colours, textures, song and dance, over 80 students from Year 4 to Year 12 carried the audience to the mysterious far away land of Agrabah. Mr Jim Tomkin and Mrs Kirsten Lee, musical directors of Aladdin Jr. at Good Shepherd were thrilled to be able to bring this beautiful story to the stage, especially after months of uncertainty. “The biggest challenge was to keep the performers rehearsing, even when they were at home during COVID-19 and we weren’t certain the musical could proceed. We were so relieved to be able to perform in front of an audience. It was really rewarding for the students, in fact for everyone involved," said Mr Tomkins. “A lot of hard work and dedication went into bringing our vision to life. Over 50 staff

Page 10 - Cooroy Rag, November 2020

members and many parents were on that journey with us. The energy and vibes that the students brought to rehearsals were amazing," said Mrs Lee. While the four shows were performed with strict COVID-19 compliance measures in place, the level of excitement within the cast remained unaffected and the families were thrilled to return to a different sense of normality. “Working within the restrictions resulted in us having to reduce the number of attendees. However it was great to welcome families back onto campus as we are used to sharing these wonderful experiences with the entire College community,” Good Shepherd Principal Mr Anthony Dyer said. While students reflect on the amazing journey of friendship and dedication, they continue to relish the applause and cheers of a live audience.

Posted with love WITH international and domestic border restrictions still in place, staying connected is more important than ever. Not being able to see loved ones for an extended period can certainly take a toll on our hearts. The Kindness Club have several members in this situation so have been looking for new ways to reach out to special people in our lives. 'Love Pillows' are currently being delivered around Australia, England and the USA! The Kindness Club kids drew colourful designs and wrote messages of love on mini handmade cushions. The children took their 'love pillows' home and hugged them for a few days (to fill them up with love) before sending them on their way! Another way we are staying connected with family and friends is through handwritten letters. For many of us, letter writing has been replaced by emails, texts and social media. And while technology

provides fast, convenient, real-time communication, there's something special about finding a handwritten letter in the letterbox! Would you enjoy a handwritten letter from The Kindness Club? Please email Wendy at thekindnessclub@outlook.com and we will pop one in the mail!

Just some of the fun being had at Pomona Kindy WE are little scientists at our kindergarten. Our children love to explore and transform materials from one thing to another. Mixing colour is always a favourite and the children have created some beautiful natural tones to use on their artwork. One of our most loved investigations is with goop. The children love to change the colour, texture and

feel of this amazing substance. Our latest investigation has been how to catch bubbles with our hands and create different objects without them popping – some have even discovered how to put their finger in a bubble without it popping. With time and imagination, it is amazing to see the discoveries children can make.

NDSHS staff and students farewell popular principal

NOOSA District State High School’s much-loved former principal Max Steven passed away in September. Staff have memories of a man who was a scholar, a gentleman and a generous leader who was NDSHS principal from 1989 to 2002. Mr Steven was a supportive mentor for many staff along their teaching journey. He was remembered for his witty sense of humour and wisdom to appreciate and nurture the diversity within the school community. Former student and current English Head of Department Alarna Priestley described Mr Steven as “an astute principal.” “He commanded the stage, the veranda of our current A Block building, when we had our weekly and sometimes daily parades. All the students had an innate respect for him. Every word Mr Stevens spoke had measure and meaning. He inspired us, he disciplined us and he

taught us how to be proud of ourselves. There is not a single student who spoke without respect for him,” Ms Priestley said. Those who knew Mr Steven felt honoured to work with him and to be guided by him. The NDSHS Facebook page was flooded with condolences from past staff and students. Former NDSHS teacher Liz Garbacz said: “He was such a wonderful man in so many ways, least of all his compassion and understanding of those he led. He is by far the best principal I worked under, I felt valued and supported and was encouraged to pursue my aspirations. Goodbye fair gentleman.” Pamela Wade said: “As a young teacher, Max Steven, was the gentlest principal who effortlessly mentored and kept a cohesive NDHS team going. Thank you for your leadership. RIP Max.” Past student Melinda Jones Watson said: “He was such an amazing principal and person.” Trina Riethmuller said: “Oh no, So sad RIP Mr Stevens, such a fantastic principal.” Luke J Strahly said: “RIP Mr Stevens. Your were a great principal and you'll be greatly missed mate.” Schanna Cleaver: “Very sad. Great principal.” Issa Schultz: “A lovely man, respected by all. RIP.” For this editor, also a former student of NDSHS when Mr Stevens was principal is saddened by loss, “He will be remembered fondly.”

Possum Magic should be about Mistletoe THE magic of creative expression has oozed through while weaving in local cultural learnings about Kabi Kabi country. This has been such a powerful project and Kabi Kabi Traditional Owner Aunty Beverly Hand has produced a stunning interactional mural. The Cooroy Community Kindergarten children are feeling very lucky to have this new inspirational and vibrant artwork to inspire them. “Thanks to Tamsin Kerr from Cooroora Institute for supporting the impromptu Artist in Residence for Aunty Beverly Hand and Zoe Renouf. Thanks to Charlie Hacker aka The BeeMan for sorting out transport and

installation of the mural panels.” Kindy child Ishara said, “I love Possums and now I know what they like to eat, I can’t wait for my next Kindy day so I can draw on some more leaves on the grass tree and add some more footprints too”. “Big thank you to our wonderful community sponsors.”

Business wins achievement award COOROY health and beauty clinic, Lakeridge has been awarded Sothys Business Achievement award for 2019/ 2020. Owner, Lisa Lister said it was a great surprise. “After Lakeridge moved to 11 Garnett Street in September 2019, six months later we were closed within 24 hours at the direction of the government due to the COVID-19 virus. “We were closed for eight weeks and at first, went into panic mode not knowing when we were allowed to re-open. It became very stressful. “We were very lucky in that we had lots of support from our accountants and also our landlord so the stress was lightened once we knew there would be government assistance and rent relief.” Lisa said she and her team used the forced shutdown period to create a new operating system for clients to book and buy online. “COVID has had some positives in that we now can offer our clients booking and buying online which is much more convenient for those that have busy lifestyles or need to book or buy after hours.” After eight weeks, Lakerige reopened COVID compliant and has been busier than ever. “We have been established in Cooroy for over 15 years and we have a very dedicated client base who were very supportive with the expansion. We have also a lot of new clients. “Lakeridge is growing stronger and this is a great outcome as we are keeping people employed and that is what we need as small business, community support.” On achieving the award, Lisa said she’d like to thank her staff and clients.

“I would like to thank our staff for their ongoing professionalism, always offering exceptional service and dedication to our clients’ concerns. But most of all thank you to our wonderful client base. Thank you for your ongoing support and we look forward to serving Cooroy for years to come.” For all your beauty, skincare, Bowen or massage needs book or buy online at lakeridgecooroy.com.au

business

The face changing the face of real estate SIRAH Robb is a powerhouse. The young mum-of-one is the owner of Wythes Real Estate with husband John Robb. In a short period of time, she has led the way to doubling the business in all aspects from sales to properties managed to staff and offices. A huge achievement for anyone, let alone someone who used to “do real estate as a hobby” in her two weeks off as a sports dietitian working with staff on their health and lifestyle in the oil and gas industry all over Australia. “I’ve always had an interest in property,” Sirah told the Cooroy Rag. “I bought my first house as soon as I left Uni and then I would buy and renovate properties in my time off work.” “So, although it was a big career change, it was a natural transition for me into becoming a real estate agent in 2010.” Sirah was given her start as an agent by an Australian flagship agency from Europe that specialised in luxury properties in Mooloolaba, before being approached by Fiona from Fiona Winter realty in 2012. “It made sense for me to focus on being an agent in an area that I am passionate about and where I lived, so the move was an easy decision. When the Doonan office became available I was the licensee for Fiona there while she still had a Noosaville office. I was there for five great years.” In 2016, Sirah and John had their son Jack and when she came back from maternity leave in 2017, John made a career change from engineering to real estate and joined Sirah. Wythes Real Estate came on the market shortly after. “I’d always had an interest in owning my own agency and when Wythes came up

it was such a great fit: a family-run business focused on the hinterland with a great culture and long-term staff.” Sirah said she was pleased to discover behind the scenes the foundations were really strong too and there were a number of good systems in place. “Trisha and Alisa Wythes had built a successful business with a really positive energy. I felt Wythes was a business we could build on with our experience from previous careers outside of real estate in addition to experience in the industry.” “John and my professional backgrounds and skill sets from previous careers really set us apart in real estate. Our aim was to raise the bar of how real estate is done and to raise the profile of the industry in general, so those working in real estate are seen as true professionals. To achieve the best results and provide the best service, being professional is essential. Our approach is to be more of a coach to a team versus a boss to staff. We provide a platform that focuses on continual professional and personal development, innovation, community service and a strong team culture to facilitate all staff to succeed in their role and be industry leaders.” Sirah is an executive on the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Committee and has become an integral part of the community. She is passionate about donating her time and funds to numerous events. “The team and I give back time and sponsor a lot of local initiatives such as the Cooroy CCTV cameras.” “We're also a major sponsor of other local events such as Sconetime, the Noosa Hinterland Christmas Carols, Australian

Body Art Festival, Fusion Festival and local school awards.” With Wythes celebrating its 10-year anniversary in January, a huge milestone Sirah said the whole team is very proud of, she reflects on what has been “an incredible journey”. “When we bought the business 3 years ago there were nine staff and one office in Cooroy. Now we have 16 staff and two locations. “We have experienced great growth in sales and property management over this time. The community has really embraced us and the way we are doing real estate.” Sirah said purchasing the second office last year brought her full circle. “The purchase of Fiona Winter Realty in Doonan was quite sentimental and special because that’s where I built my real estate career.” “We rebranded the office to Wythes and it has been a successful transition with the Wythes culture, approach and results now shining through for our clients in this area.” Looking ahead to the future, Sirah said there will be a continued focus on further raising the bar for their sales and property management clients to keep providing the best real estate experience available, along with a few other exciting things coming up. “In what seems like a short time, we’re so proud of the results we've been able to achieve, what we’re able to give back to the community and how the community has embraced our holistic approach to real estate. We’re focusing on taking that to the next level.” These results have been recognised on national, state and local levels. “We're super proud of being recognised by a number of industry bodies through awards.” “We won the state REIQ Innovation award in 2019 and Community Service award in 2020. We've been recognised as national finalists for regional sales person of the year (Alisa Wythes), Principal of the year (Sirah Robb) and locally at the Sunshine Coast Business and Business Women’s awards we've made finalist for

our Professional Services and Business Woman of the Year (Sirah Robb).” Next year, Wythes will also move offices and host the hinterland’s first property expo. “We've bought the old Commonwealth Bank building in Cooroy, two doors down from our current Cooroy location, so our project for next year is renovating that site and moving the Cooroy team to that building.” “Another big thing we're very excited about is the Noosa Hinterland Property Expo. The idea started from wanting to do a thank-you and information night for our clients and now it has grown into a major event that will promote the Noosa Hinterland, everything great about living here, and it will bring together under one roof local experts for anything related to property. We have special guest speaker Shelly Craft from The Block, live coverage by SeaFM, a charity auction for Drought Angels, lots of other guest speakers, exhibitors and fun for the kids. “Wythes are the major event sponsor, Noosa Council are supporters and there are a number of other sponsors who have jumped on board to make the inaugural event a success. The free family-friendly event is being held in Cooroy on March 20 and 21, 2021 and we can’t wait to see everyone there.” *See page 39 of this edition of the Cooroy Rag for more details.

Local store has Christmas ideas galore

IF you are looking for some Christmas gift or decoration ideas this year, look no further than Galah Home. The Cooroy homewares store is packed with items that will give your Christmas a beautiful edge this year. Owner Bekki Woodcock said if anyone is stuck for inspiration or ideas to come on in. “If you need a gift for the person who has everything, you will find something new and unique at Galah Home. “We have something for everybody. We have loved sourcing and carefully curating ideas locally and far and wide. From gifts to decorations we are sure they will bring joy to you and your family. “Our store favourites are our dog and cat advent calendars full of treats for the furry ones, our Australiana tree decorations that support the Starlight Foundation, beautifully bright baubles from artist Anna Blatman along with our handmade wreaths that have been selling out fast. “Our beautiful Australian hand

screenprinted tea-towels, napkins, table runners and tablecloths have also been a firm favourite.” Bekki said they especially love to support small businesses where things are made or sourced locally. “We have locally made timber baubles, botanical essential oil perfumes, soaps, candles, and organic teas. These sit alongside jewellery that comes all the way from Turkey, wine tumblers, sparkling flutes and wine bottles to keep your summer drinks cooled to perfection. “Clothing has been arriving weekly and you can browse our range for those special or everyday outfits.” When it comes to styling your Christmas table, Bekki suggests keeping it simple. “Use placemats and napkins, along with baubles and gift tags as a place setting, coupled with natural elements like pinecones, rosemary and gumnuts and add a candle for a scent of Christmas.” To see more, visit Galah Home, Shop 2/ 1 Emerald St, Cooroy.

Family returns to run iconic pub WHEN it comes to a family run business, you don’t get more family-run than the Apollonian Hotel. Local family the Paynters have owned the Apollonian Hotel since moving the building, originally an old music hall, from Gympie to Boreen Point over 30 years ago. And now, son George is running the business. George, 25, was born on the family property in Cootharaba, raised at the pub in Boreen Point before heading off on some sailing adventures with his parents and starting school. He went to school at Good Shepherd in Noosaville before travelling to Europe twice while obtaining a business degree in Townsville - extending the gap in gap years while doing uni. George was travelling around Australia when COVID hit and returned home from Western Australia to take over running the popular pub. In the past five months, the Apollonian has become even more popular with the beautiful trees and sweeping lawns as the setting for a great hearty well-priced meal seven days a week for lunch and dinner. When asked what makes the Apollonian Hotel so successful, George told the Cooroy Rag it all comes down to creating a happy environment with food seven days a week. “We’re here seven days a week so you need to be in a happy environment. We make sure all our staff are happy. You have to have happy staff, period.” Since returning to the Apollonian, George has initiated a number of events that have the pub pumping multiple nights of the week. “We have a muso’s jam every second Friday and a ukulele night every second

George (centre) with staff Monday and on the first Wednesday of the month we have a bluegrass night where people bring their bluegrass instrument to jam. Every Sunday some local girls who make arts and craft, come down and sell their clothing, jewellery, pottery, paintings and prints.” Instead of the famed spit roast, which cannot operate due to COVID, George has introduced smoked meat platters on Saturday and Sunday for lunch. “We do smoke beef brisket, pork shoulder, chicken wings, cauliflower, pumpkins and loaded spuds as well as the a la carte menu.” The Paynters have also renovated and reopened the pub’s accommodation. “We have 10 rooms that we have repainted and fitted out with new beds. There are five rooms with queen beds, three with queen and single beds and three with king singles. “They’re booked out most weekends and they’re booked out for the next three or four weekends to come.” The Apollonian Hotel is open from 10am to 10pm seven days a week for lunch and dinner and caters for weddings and private events also. Farewell to a beloved Cooroy lady

HELEN Bichel (nee Merry) moved to Cooroy as a young woman in 1954 when her father had the opportunity to buy a grocery store. Helen’s husband, Ron told the Cooroy Rag her father bought the grocery store at the top end of town from Mr Archie Jeffs. In those days, the shop was where Cooroy Country Wear is today. “They moved to Miva Street in Cooroy when her father purchased the grocery store and that’s where Helen worked, with her father in the shop.” Ron and Helen met and married two years later on September 15, 1956 at the Methodist Church in Cooroy. “We moved into a house in Kauri Street and had two children born at Cooroy Hospital; son Ken and daughter Fiona.” When their children attended Cooroy Kindergarten, Helen worked there as an assistant teacher.

“Her father was instrumental in bringing the kindergarten to where it is now. The building used to be the state school at West Cooroy and H e l e n ’s f a t h e r, M r M e r r y, w a s t h e president of the kindy at the time and brought it into where it is today.” Then, in 1961, Ron and Helen bought t h e F. A R o w g r o c e r y s t o r e , w h e r e Harvest Fresh and the op-shop are now, turning it into the first self-serve supermarket in the area. “When we bought the supermarket we changed it into a self-serve supermarket which was pretty new in those days. “Self-serve meant you walked in and filled your own trolley up. “Before that, supermarkets had a big long counter, and the assistants used to make up your order for you off an order form. “Marriott McKenzie was our competition, our opposition when we bought the shop.” While the children were growing up, attending Cooroy Primary and Cooroy High School, Helen worked part-time with Ron in the supermarket. They later joined the 4 Square chain of stores. Helen also received a diploma in flower arranging. “She got her diploma from the late Val Fuller who ran the florist.” She loved singing in the Cooroy Choir in the early 70s. In 1974, Ron and Helen sold the supermarket and moved to Chermside briefly before buying and retiring in Buderim in 1981. “We lived in Buderim for 40 years but for Helen, Cooroy was always home. Cooroy is still very dear in our hearts.” Helen passed away from Lewy Body Parkinsons Dementia on October 28, 2020. She was 86 years old. “She passed away peacefully at home with family. “She was a real lady, a lovely girl. She dedicated her life to raising her children,” Ron said.

Koala Rescue Queensland said they are very grateful for Dominic’s self-motivation and commitment. “Dominic contacted us out of the blue and said he wanted to raise funds to help koalas. He came to visit us at our base in Caloundra and we could tell he was genuinely interested. “He’s begun dropping contact information in letterboxes around areas where koalas have been seen crossing roads around Tewantin. “He’s also planned a school fundraising project with his Year 6 teacher. It includes the sponsorship of rescued koalas and other activities to increase awareness of the threats to these beautiful animals and of the dedication and commitment required to rescue them and care for them. “Dom keeps coming up with new ideas for ways to help us out, and then carries through with them.” If you would like to help Dominic and his cause, donation tins for KRQ can be found in various shops around Cooroy, Eumundi and Pomona. The Cooroy Rag caught up with 37year-old Angus to see what’s happened in the nine years since this photo was taken. “Since that photo was taken Alicia, 32 and I have had two little boys, Kynan, 4 and Jackson, 2 with a third boy on the way. “We live at Brookfield where my wife is a teacher and I am a plumber at Urban Utilities.”

Rag R Reeview by the Rusty Fork WELCOME to our new section, The Rag Review. Each month we will select an eatery in the Cooroy Hinterland area to be reviewed by our very own Rusty Fork. This is aimed at highlighting the wonderful array of restaurants, cafés, coffee shops that we are lucky to have in our local area. The first to be selected was The Pomona Village Kitchen. First impressions were amazing as we entered the lush and relaxed tropical room set with lots of small tables and a quirky bar area. We were seated inside as requested and were soon offered drinks from the list on the wall. Rusty had a great chardonnay and Mrs Fork chose the French rose’. Unfortunately, the French was out of stock, but the Victorian substitute was very pleasing. Both wines were served in stemless wine glasses and limited to exactly a standard drink. This is great if you are driving and need to count your drinks but they were very small serves none the less. We selected some starters of Kara age chicken and some sweet potato chips. The chicken was nice enough, but the smoky flavour of the extra crisp sweet potato chips and their sweet chilli dipping sauce were a standout. The Pomona Village Kitchen menu has a curry of the month and a broth of the month. Rusty chose the broth which was a chilled gazpacho served with soft shelled crab and sour dough toast. The flavours were perfect. It was just like an ice-cold Bloody Mary, lots of cucumber to balance the spice, and the soft-shell crab gave a

Other staff were obviously young local girls who have not had a lot of restaurant experience nor training, but had a light, fresh approach to casual service. Overall a very pleasant evening with good food, reasonable prices, and friendly service. Fork ratings (out of 10): Food: 7 Service: 7 Atmosphere: 7 luxury to the texture. This was the perfect choice on a warm hinterland evening. Mrs Fork chose the curry of the month which was a chilli con carne made with pulled beef. Again, the flavour combination was a sublime balance, with rice, kim chee and corn chips as accompaniments. The spice level was a perfect medium as advertised and the creaminess of the slow cooked beef made for a very pleasant meal. Junior Fork also tagged along for the experience and chose the nachos served with slow cooked beef ribs. It was another very pleasant meal, although not as outstanding as the gazpacho or the chilli con carne. Not a great deal of room was left after such satisfying mains, but we decided to share a serve of the churros which arrived with a decadent salted caramel dipping sauce. It was slightly doughy inside but overall made a very pleasant end to a great meal. Service was provided by a capable waiter, who although needing to run to the kitchen to check on the answer to every question, was very personable and warm.

IN the four weeks the BreastScreen van has been in Opal Street, Cooroy it has seen almost 500 ladies. BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast health promotion officer, Gillian Duffy told the Cooroy Rag the service has been very popular. "We have been full every day. We hope we've provided a good service to all the ladies in the hinterland area." The van is off to Beerwah next and then Kenilworth in March, returning to Cooroy in October, 2021. But, for women wanting a breast screen there is a BreastScreen facility in Noosa. "We have a fixed site in Noosaville in Goodchap Street. That service is open t h r e e d a y s a w e e k , Tu e s d a y, We d n e s d a y, T h u r s d a y s o I w o u l d encourage anyone who didn't get to the Cooroy van to go there," Gillian said. Visit BreastScreen Queensland N o o s a v i l l e a t 9 0 G o o d c h a p St , Noosaville QLD 4566. Phone: 13 20 50 to book.

The BreastScreen Queensland Program is provided free to women aged 40 years and over and no doctor’s referral is needed. Women aged 50 to 74 are strongly encouraged to have a breast screen every two years. THE FACTS: • 75% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50. Younger women do get breast cancer, but the risk of breast cancer increases dramatically after the age of 50. • Nine out of 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer have NO family history of the disease. While women with a family history of breast cancer are more at risk, most women diagnosed have no family history of the disease. • A breast screen every two years is the best way to detect breast cancer early, well before you or your doctor can feel anything. • Women aged 40 years and over are eligible for a free breastscreen every two years at a BreastScreen Queensland Service. Women aged 50-74 years are particularly encouraged to attend.

Cooroy State School steps out for mental health THE staff, students and families of Cooroy State School highly value and support mental health and wellness in our Cooroy community. So when Mental Health Week came around in October, we decided to go one better and make it a mental health month. For 28 days, our school community ‘Stepped Out for Mental Health’, and between the kids and adults, we stepped a staggering 14,180,093 steps. The event has been a fun way for us to unite and promote the benefits of physical activity and teamwork for our mental health and wellness. As always Jo Munday, the CEO and her fantastic team at the Eden Private Hospital, support our school. This year it was to donate a beautiful hamper as a prize for our stepping competition. Our Wellbeing Team here at the school decided to award it to Sunny Coast Accountants for their community spirit. Both Eden Private Hospital and Sunny Coast Accountants are amazing

ambassadors for mental health in our community. The partnership between our organisations shows how education, health and business can all join together to make our community stronger. We are looking forward to making our Mental Health Week activities bigger and better in 2021.

Mental health training being held at hall MENTAL First Aid (MHFA) Training is being held at Cooroy Memorial Hall on November 23 and 30. The one course is being held over two separate days. At this stage, access to the course is by closed invitation to key community members via Noosa Council's Community Development networks as the course can only accommodate 20 people due to COVID safe restrictions. Noosa Council Community Development Officer, Cheryl Pattison said she hopes a series of MHFA courses will run with another two or three planned for next year. "These will be open to the broader community to attend and if possible, depending on COVID, more participants will be allowed." As part of the Category C Bushfire Recovery/Resilience program, Council has identified a series of actions to improve community mental health outcomes.

Hot tips from Ambos as we come into summer

Representatives of the Cooroy & District LAC and the Queensland Ambulance Service

Jennifer Currie & Associates

RECENTLY the Cooroy and District Local Ambulance Committee held a meeting to welcome several new members into their ranks. At the same time, we sadly said goodbye to long-time members John and Margaret Gabb, who after almost twenty years of service to the QAS, have decided to retire and move to Brisbane. Both have been committed members and served in various positions on the committee, John most recently as Honorary Treasurer. Both have been committed advocates for ambulance services within the Noosa Shire, including the funding and provision of countless community interactions, first aid and CPR awareness sessions. We wish them well in their new home and know the Cooroy community will greatly miss them. The hot weather is well upon us now, and the recent storms in the area highlight the importance of being prepared at home. Have you made plans about what you would do if you had to vacate your house due to storm damage, or if you were isolated for a period due to flooding?

Some key tips I like to recommend include: - Have a list of your medications, your medical conditions and your GP’s contact details - Keep a supply of your regular medications on hand in case you need them and try to refill prescriptions a few days before you need to - Keep a well-stocked first aid kit at home and in your car for minor injuries - Learn first aid/CPR and know how to call Triple ZERO (000), including when you have no landline - Visit the Queensland ‘Get Ready’ website for more advice, tips and suggestions at www.getready.qld.gov.au. Finally, along with the hot weather is an increase in activity from our slithery friends! There were 16 snake bites reported across the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service during October 2020, an increase from three bites during September 2020. It is important to remember that most snake bites occur when people try to kill or move the reptile, including when they try to get between the snake and a pet. The best advice is always to give a snake a wide birth, and if you are concerned, contact a licenced snake catcher (there are several in the area). If you do get bitten, the most important advice is: - Stay still and as calm as possible - Call Triple ZERO (000) for an ambulance - Don’t wash the wound, apply a pressure bandage along the entire limb if available - Don’t use tourniquets, cut the wound, or suck the venom. If you would like to book in for first aid training, visit the Queensland Ambulance Service website https://bookings.qld.gov.au/ services/firstaid/ Ben Phipps, Officer in Charge, Cooroy Station, QAS

Browns, browns and more browns

LOCAL snake catcher Luke Huntley told the Cooroy Rag he has been run off his feet catching brown snakes in Cooroy and Pomona. “I have caught more brown snakes this season than I ever have. I’m catching one or two browns a day mainly in Cooroy.” Luke said that it’s not that there are more snakes than usual, it is just perfect weather conditions for them. “Last year the bushfires and everything

being so dry disrupted their cycle but this year because we’re in an El Nina with the hot days and afternoon rain, that humidity and that warmth is perfect for them.” Luke said thankfully, so far, he hasn’t spoken to anyone who has been bitten this season. “Most people get bitten when they are trying to catch or kill a snake. I tell people to think about their families and picture a life support machine because that’s where you’ll end up if you get bitten by a brown snake. Leave them alone and call a professional. “Also, if you get caught killing a snake you get a $18 000 fine. The fines are there to protect the snakes because they are a protected species and to protect people by deterring them from risking their lives trying to kill a snake. “Take the safer option, call a professional snake catcher.” For any snake concerns, call Luke Huntley from Snake Catcher Noosa on 0499 920 290.

Snakes bites: 16 bitten last month THE number of people bitten by snakes is on the rise as the weather heats up, with 16 presentations in October across Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service emergency departments. SCHHS Emergency Consultant Dr Barrie Field said that although snakes can be encountered throughout the year in Queensland, they are more active in the summer months. “As the temperatures rise so do snake sightings. Many species, including some venomous (dangerous) ones, can be found in residential areas, including in people’s houses, in supermarket car parks and on public beaches and sand dunes. Page 30 - Cooroy Rag, November 2020

“There is also an increase in sightings, and in bites, during school and public holiday periods and during the peak periods of visitor numbers to the Sunshine Coast. “Everyone needs to be aware that we share the environment with a number of potentially dangerous snakes and should know what to do if bitten,” Dr Field said. The SCHHS has recorded around 125 snake bite-related presentations so far in 2020, with 90 of these occurring in the first four months of the year. In September there were three presentations for snake bite, but in October there were 16.

How to protect your pets this tick season IT’S that time of the year again where ticks and fleas are more prevalent and people are asking what is better for their pets. The market place has many options including one month, three month and six month treatments. Some people know what they want but many people are not sure how the treatments work. Most work with the oils of the skin so if the flea or tick bites they die. I'll note though that Nexgard is distributed through the bloodstream directly still affecting the parasites as they bite. If your dog swims every day then a chewable should be your choice as the topical treatment needs time to dry to be effective. So, what to buy: Nexgard, Spectra, Bravecto or Simparica? Well, it comes down to whether your dog has a heartworm needle as that eliminates Spectra. If you don't want monthly treatment then that leaves Bravecto as a three or six month treatment and that becomes internal or topical. Or if you want worming included one tablet does all. Pricing is similar but as always, it is cheaper buying in six packs. Don't forget to look around for pricing and plan ahead on these treatments as price and availability vary. For example recently one large store was selling a six month treatment for $109.99 while we sell it at $92.99. Another thing about ticks is they don't jump. They wait for us using sensors. They can smell ammonia and feel temperature change then attach as we or our pets go by. Bandicoots are big movers of ticks into our environment so as the weather warms there is more tick movement. Ticks survive the winter in a variety of ways,

Lights comp for businesses

Van loses top in subway

A RENTAL van has been badly damaged after being driven through Pomona Subway. The hire vehicle was bigger than the signed 2.8m subway clearance, effectively scalping the truck as it passed through. Local business owner John Boe said he was working nearby when he heard an "almighty crash". "I went out and saw this truck trying to dislodge from under the subway. "I went over to see if everyone was alright and there were two young fellas. They had just hired the van 20 minutes earlier."

John said he was the first on the scene and after, 20 people pulled up as did the fire brigade and Queensland Rail staff to inspect the bridge. Thankfully, no one was injured and the bridge given the all clear. "They drove clear through the subway and out the other end taking the back clean off. They were worried they'd lose their deposit. “I called the local rental company to tell them about the accident, they couldn't believe it," John said.

THE Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club is inviting Pomona businesses to “dress to impress” for Christmas again this year. Businesses are encouraged to deck out their shopfronts for the annual Pomona Christmas Lights Competition and go in the draw to win $200 and a trophy. Lions Club member Vicki Dessaix said they hope the prize money will encourage more businesses to participate after the trophy wasn’t awarded last year. “With a $200 added incentive, businesses might be convinced to try again. This is the year that we need cheer in the town.” Invitations have gone out and judging will take place on Thursday, December 17 with the winner announced at the Pomona Markets on Saturday, December 19. Pomona State School students are also invited to team up with a participating business to help by bringing their creativity to their display. Also bringing cheer to Pomona, the Lions Club will erect Santa and his sleigh over the arch at the entrance to Stan Topper Park and large illuminated Christmas presents have been hung in the tree next to the Pomona War Memorial in Joe Bazzo Park by Noosa Council. While the Pomona Night of Lights event has been cancelled due to COVID-19, the Pomona Community House is looking at alternative Christmas festivities.

What’s all the racquet at Pomona Tennis Club PEOPLE will often say, “I didn’t know Pomona had a tennis club” followed by, “where is it?”. Well, the club is located in the Pomona Showgrounds off Exhibition Street and has two hard courts, a clubhouse and offers a number of tennis activities for everyone. For juniors, coaching sessions are held on Thursday afternoons with primary and beginner students at 3.30pm and high school students and fixture players at 4.15pm. The club has 30 junior members who participate in coaching, fixtures, junior development tournaments and use the club socially with their families. For anyone looking for a fun way to get fit, Cardio Tennis fun fitness sessions are held every Wednesday morning from 9am. The session is jam-packed with tennis games and drills and costs just $10. Both junior coaching and cardio tennis classes are run by tennis coach, Rob Schmitt. Rob is a qualified Tennis Australia Junior Development Coach and an ATPCA Advanced Level Coach. Any adult can join in the social tennis sessions held on Tuesday mornings at 9am and Friday nights starting at 7pm. Court hire is also available for the public. Everybody is welcome at Pomona Tennis Club. Call Adrian on 0428 714585 for more details.

THE Mary Valley Rattler is now offering a pet-friendly service. The new ‘Pets On Board’ service allows passengers to share the heritage steam train experience with their favourite fourlegged friend. Mary Valley Rattler general manager Micheal Green said for many, pets are part of the family and they want to share this experience with them. “We have had many requests from potential passengers asking whether they can bring their dogs. Naturally, we’ve allowed passengers with Guide Dogs to travel on the Rattler and everyone has been supportive, so extending the opportunity to other passengers to bring along a wellbehaved pet was a logical evolution.” The Rattler has configured a carriage with two segregated booths that can accommodate up to six people per booth with up to two pets per booth from the same family. “It is part of our philosophy of making the Rattler available to everyone in the

community. Earlier this month we launched an all-access carriage that was specially designed to facilitate wheelchair passengers and that has attracted a flood of bookings. We believe our pet-friendly facilities will also encourage greater inclusion and participation amongst the community.” The Mary Valley Rattler operates a range of services across the week from Gympie Station to Amamoor in the Mary Valley. Each three-hour journey captures the beauty and history of the rich agricultural – and former gold mining – region from the comfort of beautifully restored heritage carriages. The pricing for passengers is the same as the regular service and $10 per pet cost is applied. Pets can travel on board the Rattler on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday services subject to availability. Terms and conditions apply. For more info visit the Mary Valley Rattler at https:// www.maryvalleyrattler.com.au/

Paper Angels support grieving families

WICKER workers Ron and Cathie Twaddle are just one of three artists displaying their wares in the latest exhibition at The Art Hub, Cooroy. Until December 4, the Twaddle’s wicker baskets, made with traditional materials and methods while experimenting with colour, texture and form, are on display. After running their Brisbane-based business, And Woven Cane, making and repairing classic cane furniture, traditional baskets and running workshops for 40 years, the husband and wife team moved to Caboolture.

PAPER Angels make special cards for parents and grandparents of stillborn babies. The Stampin’ Up! demonstrators, Gaye Schrader, Barbara Boesten and Jill Potts make ‘Keepsake Feet and Handprint’ cards and supply them to the bereavement department of maternity wards for grieving families and to measure the progress of premature babies. Maternity Inpatient Unit, Fetal Loss team leader, Katelyn Brown said the volunteers at Paper Angels support their Maternity Inpatient Unit’s Butterfly Suite with an invaluable service. “These angels make and donate beautiful hand and footprints cards that we use to provide treasured keepsakes of their

babies for grieving families. “The care and attention that Paper Angels use in creating these cards is clear and valued when we see just how much families cherish the keepsakes we provide and it makes an extremely difficult time for grieving families just that little bit easier.” Every year, Paper Angels hold an annual Christmas Card Charity Workshop. This year’s workshop was Paper Angels’ fifth event fundraising for the SCUH Maternity Bereavement Ward.

TWO husband and wife teams have combined to create art using many different mediums. Local artists Audrey and Ian Gunn and Kerry and David Sanders said visitors to the Pop Up Art exhibition at the old Commonwealth Bank this month will see “the joy in the handmade”. “Exhibiting small and large scale paintings, beautiful ceramics, superb metal sculpture (again small and large scale) and exquisite mixed media work.” Kerry Sanders is one half of the very successful locally-based Hartfire Design team. Her love of nature is expressed in her handmade ceramics. This includes everything from sculpture, art for your garden, dinnerware and water features. Kerry has also completed many commissions, exhibitions and festivals and is passionate about passing on her extensive knowledge through teaching at her Hartfire Design Studio in the Cooroy hinterland. David Sanders, Kerry’s husband, completes this union of passion for ceramics and metal. Working in metal is second nature to David or Wolf as he prefers to be called. Wolf recently showcased his amazing sculptural talent at Swell Contemporary Sculpture Festival, Queensland’s largest, on the Gold Coast. Crowds were amazed not only at the craftsmanship but the sheer scale of his commissioned work, “Adam and Eve”, as it was over two metres in height. He also creates work on a smaller scale, which will be on show here. He is in great demand with a waiting list of private commissions. Audrey Gunn is an award-winning artist who works in many different media including ceramics, sculpture and works on paper. For the Pop Up, Audrey will be exhibiting mixed media work which will showcase her contemporary use of silk embroidery, creating life drawings, botanicals and more. Audrey has exhibited widely and has completed commissions in Australia, England and America. Audrey’s husband Ian has participated in over 50 exhibitions in Queensland and interstate and his paintings are held in private and public collections worldwide. He works from his shared studio just 30 minutes from Cooroy. The subject matter for all of the small and large scale paintings in this exhibition are based on the landscape, fauna and flora he loves. To see Audrey, Ian, Kerry and Wolf’s work, visit the Pop Up Gallery at 32 Maple Street (old Commonwealth Bank building) Cooroy on Thursdays 10am-3pm, Fridays 10am-3pm, Saturdays 9am-1pm and Sundays 9am-12 noon until November 29, 2020.

Probus celebrate Joyce’s 94th TRIPS to Kenilworth, luncheons, morning coffee sessions, a visit to the Heritage Centre, a planned trip to Gympie and a whole lot of companionship are some of the club’s recent activities. It was a very well attended RSL luncheon to celebrate Joyce Cunningham's 94th birthday recently. A life member of the club, Joyce was presented with a bouquet on her special occasion. Then there were more special memories relived at the Heritage Centre when Iris Tomlinson and Joyce Cunningham told us all just how local, local is with Iris being born in Cooroy and Joyce at Elanda Point. It was an interesting morning spent with the genealogy group and how proud they should be for raising $300,000 for the magnificent set-up they have here in Cooroy.

It was with shock we learn of Nancy Thom's passing. Nancy was in her element contacting members whom she heard were not well, always ready to cheer them up. Her family gave her a wonderful farewell and past and present Probus members were privileged to be included in the eulogy. Inducting new members is always a thrill, so Lilo Standler and Rita Miller are a welcome addition. If you would like to join Probus Cooroy, contact Jeanette on 0413 947 320.

Historical group’s Missing Link journal out now TWICE a year, the Cooroy-Noosa Genealogical & Historical Research Group publishes an official journal. Missing Link contains articles of local and genealogical interest as well as items to assist with research. November’s edition is out now. The journal is distributed to group members as well as libraries, government bodies and scores of other historical research groups around Australia and overseas. In this latest edition, Winifred Wynn writes about Forgotten Noosa Schools, the bare basics education provided to early settlers’ children by teachers who were paid £1 per week and had to board at farmhouses. Washing Day by Helga Hill recounts her childhood memories of Mondays spent boiling the copper and the smell of Lux soap

Freemasons donate funds to Katie Rose Cottage THE Cooroy Freemasons have presented Katie Rose Cottage Hospice with a cheque for $9600. The funds, from the Freemason’s Board of Benevolence, are to assist the charity with offsetting increased costs and loss of income due to COVID. Cooroy Freemasons said costs of cleaning and sanitising equipment and the facility has risen dramatically for Katie Rose due to the pandemic. “This is at a time when a major source of their income, from the opportunity shops, was closed down, making for very challenging times,” the statement to the Cooroy Rag reads. Katie Rose Cottage Hospice delivers a 24 hour, seven days a week service within the Sunshine Coast community. “This compassionate and devoted

Carol Raye of Kattie Rose Hospice with members of Cooroy Queen Alexandra Lodge in Cooroy palliative care facility enables those with major health issues to remain in their homes for as long as possible. They also provide the same caring service

from their three-bed facility in Noosa. “The Cooroy Freemasons are very proud they were able to secure a grant from the benevolent arm of Freemasons Queensland. This has enabled Katie Rose Hospice to continue their invaluable work without any major disruptions to their operations. “We would all like to hope, that when our time comes, we never need to avail ourselves of this service. However, it is reassuring to know that Katie Rose Cottage Hospice is operating in our community.” Hand Heart Pocket, the Freemasons Charity arm has provided over $785,000.00 worth of emergency grants throughout Queensland to assist charitable organisations to offset the spiralling costs of the COVID pandemic.

Missing Link journal committee members at work on the latest edition: Helga Hill, Liz Diggles and Louise Ball flakes. The Dunera Boys is a now-famous story about the HMT Dunera, a ship that arrived in Australia in September 1940 with 2000 Jewish refugees aboard who were mistaken for German enemy aliens. They were detained in a camp for a year before the bungle was remedied. There are articles on German migration to Queensland as well as stories by members who have researched their family heritage from Germany and Poland. My Lost Jewish History by Louise Ball reads like a detective story as she searches for clues about her great-great-grandfather. The November 2020 edition of Missing Link is now available on their website in digital format along with many other useful publications, guides and research tools. Visit genealogy-noosa.org.au/ and follow the links to Missing Link. You can visit the Noosa-Cooroy Genealogical Group’s Heritage Centre on Emerald Street, Cooroy from 9.30am to 1pm Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. There is a specialised library and a bank of computers with access to several international resources and volunteers to help you with your research. The public is welcome.

Cricket team tee off for Breast Cancer Trials Research OCTOBER 22, 2020 proved to be a very successful day for fund raising for Breast Cancer Research at Cooroy Golf Club. About 50 eager women set out in a blaze of pink to master the novelty course. The winning team consisted of Tina Thomas, Juliet Hall, Joyce McKay and Kaye Gilmour, with Chris Michael, Sarah Brogden, Amanda Tie and Margit Cruise coming second. Pin shots went to Juliet Hall (twice) and Leith Barr, with Toni Mason winning the accuracy drive for nearest to Bundy Bear resplendent in a pink feather boa. Maria Taurer had reason to celebrate – her tee shot on the 10th somehow managed to find its way through the small gap in the toilet seat surrounding the hole to finish in the hole. Congratulations on your hole-in-one, Maria. The auction held after the game, very ably conducted by Kirsty Patten (who prefers playing soccer to golf), proved to be a huge success. This exclusive, peaceful home has been designed to make the most of its magnificent position in beautiful Ocean View and must be seen to be appreciated. • 3.7 acres of horse friendly acreage with spring fed dam • 6m x 12m Shed + 12m x 7m Awning Agent: Ray White Rural Eumundi Phone: 5442 8080

‘The Orchard’ WATER, the key element to the production! 'The Orchard' is well watered from the two dams servicing irrigation feeders to the entire property and is set on some 18 acres. Established trees include 244 lychee trees, 205 mango trees, and approximately 3500 stone fruit trees and a smaller plantation of some 40 fig trees. With the balance of the acreage providing a perfect space for the potential to grow one of the more popular, but also in high demand crops, of garlic and ginger. 'The Orchard' is set in both a private and protected environment with approximately 90% of the established fruits covered with both overhead and side netting providing protection to the produce. Also impressive with this property is the shed space offering not only one but two sheds, one of which is 7x26m and the other 12x6m and complete with 4m x 3½m cold room awaiting the next crop. Situated just one hour from the Brisbane CBD, a rural lifestyle with income has never been easier for the business professionals who have work commitments based in the city but aspire to the opportunity to live and raise their family in the rural environment. With dual accommodation, and pool house, the home offers an array of opportunities from the extended family, weekend getaways or even Airbnb. Totally renovated in 2017 it exhibits influences of a Mediterranean style expressing both timeless and quintessential character. Working from home is another

great option with the selfcontained granny flat with the Mediterranean influence which overlooks the still waters of the large pool and outdoor entertaining area, which also connects to the self-contained one bedroom pool house fitted with a kitchen. The current owners have decided that it is time to downsize and are offering 'The Orchard' to a new family with aspirations and many more years of enjoyment, sharing and marketing their produce both locally and to wider markets.
