Coming off our tenth anniversary, Copley Fine Art Auctions, LLC has hit some major benchmarks. As one of the country’s fastest growing auction companies, Copley has tallied more than $40 million in total sales since its inception. These results are a direct reflection of the confidence and support that our clients place with our firm. In addition, Copley just completed its most successful Winter Sale to date, achieving over $2 million in sales. Our strategic partnership with the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition continues to pay dividends for both organizations, making Copley’s February Charleston auction one of the signature Sporting Art events of the year. During the past decade, the Copley team has established world record auction results for dozens and dozens of American, Sporting, Wildlife, and decoy artists. Copley’s consistent sell-through rate of nearly 90% speaks volumes in terms of our team’s market knowledge as well as our commitment and dedication to these fields. On August 1st, Copley will be expanding and moving its headquarters to historic Hingham, Massachusetts. This beautiful coastal shipping port, first settled in 1635, has a rich history. We welcome you to visit our new showrooms. Simultaneously, our firm’s American painting breadth will also expand exponentially as American painting dealer Robert C. “Terry” Vose, III joins the Copley team. Terry is widely recognized as one of the most respected American painting dealers in the world. I have looked up to Terry for over twenty-five years and to have the opportunity to work side by side with him will be a great privilege, not to mention a tremendous education! Copley has worked hard to earn the reputation as a firm of straight shooters. With over 10,000 Sporting Art objects sold in the last ten years, Copley’s enormous database is coveted for its accurate auction reporting. As a true measure of the marketplace, this powerful research tool gives our customers tremendous peace of mind by enabling them to make educated purchasing and selling decisions. We are exceedingly proud of these well-kept records and view this database as one of our greatest assets to the public. To make this resource even more user-friendly and accessible, starting in 2017, Copley’s proprietary database will be searchable on Copley’s mobile app. Speaking of our app, in a few weeks Copley’s first mobile app will be launched! The app will allow our clients to bid directly from their phones and tablets in this upcoming Sporting Sale. Copley is rising to new heights and we couldn’t make this journey without our loyal clients. “Benson's annual fishing trips to Canada's Gaspe Peninsula inspired dozens of watercolors and oils that ranged from quiet studies of boats at rest to paintings of the fishermen themselves. Frank Weston Benson, one of the Ten American Painters and a leading influence in the Boston School of American Impressionism, was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on March 24, 1862. In his youth, Benson was a gifted athlete and excelled at boxing, sailing, and tennis. Growing up along the extensive marshes surrounding his native Salem, Benson learned to hunt and fish at an early age. Benson loved nature and birds in particular. He wanted to combine his love for birds and his love for art by pursuing a career as an ornithological illustrator in the manner of John James Audubon (1785-1851). As a child he spent many hours at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard and Benson’s mother, who was herself a painter, encouraged him in this pursuit. In 1880, Benson enrolled at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He studied with the school’s founding teachers, Otto Grundmann (1844-1890) and Frederick Crowninshield (1845-1918). Among his classmates were Willard Metcalf (1858-1925), William Bicknell (1860-1947), Edmund C. Tarbell (1862-1938), and Joseph Lindon Smith (1863-1950). Benson learned quickly and was recognized as a particularly gifted student. In 1882, while still attending classes at the Museum School, Benson began to teach free evening drawing classes in Salem. In 1885 Benson rented a painting studio in Salem. He began to exhibit at the Boston Art Club and the National Academy of Design in New York, receiving much critical acclaim and numerous awards. After his marriage to Ellen Peirson in 1888, he taught at the Boston Museum School with his friend Edmund Tarbell intermittently until 1930. PROVENANCE: William V. Andrew Newell Wyeth was born in 1917 in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, to Carolyn Bockius Wyeth and the well-known American artist N.C. Wyeth. Andrew was the youngest of five siblings, and after years of home tutoring and art instruction from his father, Wyeth achieved his own extraordinary fame and success for his paintings. Wyeth drew heavily from his personal experience for the subjects of his works, focusing intensely on the individuals and environments around him and depicting them in the realist tradition. Two families and two locations influenced him in particular: the Kuerners in Pennsylvania and the Olsons in Maine. Wyeth’s paintings of Maine lent the artist his earliest commercial success. He recalled, “When I was eighteen or nineteen [in 1937], he [N.C. Wyeth] showed some of my watercolors, primarily of Maine, to William Macbeth who had the only gallery in New York that exclusively handled American paintings. And Macbeth put on an exhibition and the show was a big success. Sold out.” Wyeth also noted, “I loved the works of Winslow Homer, his watercolors...which I studied intently so I could assimilate his various watercolor technique.” The fast-drying quality of watercolor compelled Wyeth to paint quickly. Beth Venn, curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Newark Museum in New Jersey, writes, “It is Wyeth’s work in watercolor that most clearly demonstrates the astonishing depth and range of his technical and expressive capacity.” This 1940 watercolor titled Terns on Little Green Island depicts a lobsterman, four pot buoys in the foreground of a small Maine coastal island, and a number of darting terns in the sky. It was painted during a time of experimentation when Wyeth was exploring the outlying islands during the summer with a rowboat and a friend. The vibrant colors Wyeth observed on
the island are exhibited in depths of blues, purples, greens, and reds. The vibrancy and active brushstrokes attest to the robust experimentation of the young artist. In 1940 Wyeth married Betsy James, and the painting is inscribed “For Bess” from the newlywed couple. Mrs. Raymond W. Gowdy, nee Bess Battey, was the daughter of Herbert Verner Battey, an attorney and public servant in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Mrs. Gowdy was a musician and lived in Connecticut and Rockland, Maine. The careful observation and technical virtuosity on display in Terns on Little Green Island make this work a classic Maine scene by one of America’s best-known artists. Wyeth’s works can be found in major museum collections across the country, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Metropolitan Museum, New York, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. He received the National Medal of Arts in 2007 and died in 2009 at the age of ninety-one. This watercolor will be included in Betsy James Wyeth's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work. Born in Winthrop, Massachusetts, John Whorf spent many years painting the seascapes around Provincetown, Massachusetts. As a young man, he studied in Boston at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and the St. Botolph Studio under Philip Leslie Hale (1865-1931) and Sherman Kidd (1877-1952). In 1919, after recovering from a paralyzing accident, Whorf traveled to Europe. He painted throughout France, Portugal, and Morocco, gradually shifting to painting watercolors as well as oils. Whorf held his first one-man show in 1921, and continued to hold them twice a year for the next thirty-five years.

His first land-based job came in 1905 for the well-known sporting artist and illustratorA.B. Frost, who inspired him to pursue a career in art. Fischer spent two years at the Académie Julian in France before settling in Wilmington, DE,to study with the eminent American illustrator Howard Pyle a nd the Brandywine School.
He became the Artist Laureate of the U.S. Coast Guard in 1943, exhibiting his wartime drawings at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC. Owen Gromme was born in Wisconsin in 1896, and spent much of his childhood hunting in the wetlands and forests near his home. Gromme made his career as the Curator of Birds and Mammals at the Milwaukee Public Museum, staying in this position for over four decades. In this capacity he traveled across the United States and to Africa documenting the wildlife he encountered. Although he was a high school dropout, by the time of his death in 1991 Owen Gromme had received five honorary doctorates, as well as published and illustrated Birds of Wisconsin. Born in Syracuse, New York, Bishop developed a passion for waterfowl while hunting with his father. He graduated from Cornell University in 1909, and later spent four years in the military. In 1920 upon moving to Philadelphia, where he worked at a copper manufacturing plant, Bishop’s career as an artist began. He picked up a discarded piece of copper plate, covered it with wax, and created his first etching. Four years later, in 1924, he won the Charles M. Lea Prize at the Philadelphia Print Club for his work Canada Geese. Bishop was a member of the Philadelphia
Printmakers Club, the Philadelphia Sketch Club, the Philadelphia Watercolor Club, and the Philadelphia Art Alliance. Bishop wrote and illustrated Bishop’s Birds and in 1948 he produced Bishop's Waterfowl. In 1962, he collaborated with Edgar M. Queeny on Prairie Wings. The artwork in Bishop’s books are superb renderings of birds in their natural habitat, for he was able to capture the fluidity of a bird’s flight and recreate detailed landscapes in the background. He was a highly energetic and enthusiastic individual. His passion for wildlife helped him to produce images that were both life-like and accurate. Bishop’s work is held in the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Everson Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. PROVENANCE:

Known as one of America’s earliest sporting artists, Arthur Fitzgerald Tait was born in Liverpool, England, in 1819. From an early age he was interested in both art and the outdoors. Tait worked for the firm of Thomas Agnew, a famous art dealer and lithographer in Manchester, trained in lithography and drawing, and explored the open land around the city. However, many of the most beautiful vistas and hunting grounds were private and off-limits. While in the employ of the art firm, Tait was exposed to the works of Edwin Landseer (1802-1873), Richard Ansdell (1818-1885), and John Frederick Herring (1815-1907), among others. In Liverpool, beginning in 1843, Tait spent time with fellow artist George Catlin (17961872), which may have whetted the young artist’s appetite to explore life in America. Catlin, who was twenty-three years older than Tait, had spent much of the previous decade living in the American West chronicling the life of American natives through his careful drawings and sketches of their clothing, weapons, and ceremonies. There is little doubt that Catlin’s stories would have captivated the young and talented Tait. In 1850, Tait boarded a boat with his wife and came to America. By 1852 Tait was pursuing his interests in wildlife and hunting, based on the subject matter of his works. He worked from a studio in New York City, but spent a great deal of time on Long Lake in the Adirondack region, where he acquired skills as an angler, hunter, and keen observer of wildlife. These skills were as important for Tait’s art as his fine ability with brush and pigment, since they gave an authenticity to his portrayals of outdoor life which was virtually unrivalled at the time. His relative freedom to paint wherever he wanted in the woods of New York was obviously liberating to the artist, who had felt confined by the strict laws governing trespassing and hunting on private property in England.
With this liberation and experience of the outdoors, Tait’s artistic career flourished. In 1852, only two years after Tait arrived in New York, Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) and James Merritt Ives (1824-1895) purchased the first of many works from the budding artist. In that same year, Tait was asked to hang a half-dozen works at the National Academy of Design’s annual exhibition. By 1854 he had achieved an associate membership and four years later he became a full member. Editions of Tait’s works for Currier and Ives were reproduced by the thousands and formed some of America’s most iconic images of the Victorian era. The exceptionally popular “American Field Sports” series showcased Tait’s abilities as an upland bird and dog painter and included the four lithographs A Chance for Both Barrels, Flushed, On a Point, and Retrieving. These hunting scenes, along with his camping and woodland scenes, resonated with the public as an integral part of the American experience and continue to inform us of our history as a nation. Seminal works by Tait, such as An Anxious Moment, A Tight Fix, and Trappers at Fault: Looking for the Trail, have become embedded as part of our

heritage and serve as signposts along our path as a nation. Edwin Megargee was born in Philadelphia in 1883. He studied at Georgetown University, the Drexel Art Institute in Philadelphia, and the Art Students League in New York and specialized in paintings of domestic animals and sporting subjects. Many of his sporting dog scenes appeared in Field & Stream and in his portfolio, Gun Dogs at Work. He is best known as a leading portrayer of prize-winning gun dogs, including pointers, setters, retrievers, and spaniels. In 1953, Megargee illustrated Julie Campbell Tatham’s World Book of Dogs. In it, he is referred to as, “a licensed (and very active) judge of the American Kennel Club and Chairman of its Library Committee. As breeder, judge and owner of firstclass sporting and bench show dogs, he brings to his paintings and illustrations a thorough knowledge of animal structure, color and authenticity of atmosphere.” A color print published and copyrighted by West Surf Publications in 1972 accompanies the painting. Roland Clark is known as a premier wildlife etcher and painter. He was born in New Rochelle, New York, and studied at the Art Students League in Manhattan. After living in the Tidewater region of Virginia for several years, where he enjoyed hunting and other outdoor pursuits, Clark returned to New York City and devoted himself
to painting and illustrating full-time. Beginning in 1937, the Derrydale Press reproduced two of Clark’s watercolors of wildfowl every year in limited edition prints. In addition, he submitted illustrations to Ducks Unlimited, a booklet that was published by the More Game Birds in America Foundation. Robert Abbett, born in Indiana in 1926, is best known for his depictions of sporting dogs, fly-fishing, and Western life. He began his career as an advertising illustrator, attending night and weekend classes at both the Chicago Academy of Fine Art and the American Academy of Art where he found himself drawn to editorial and advertising art. In 1953 he moved from Chicago to Connecticut to be closer to the editorial markets. There he illustrated for Argosy, The Woman’s Home Companion, Sports Afield, Reader’s Digest, and True magazines. He also worked with several West Coast motion picture studios and drew covers for many of the leading paperback publishers.
Robert Abbett was commissioned to paint his first animal portrait of Luke in 1970. It was with this painting that he transitioned from working as an illustrator to a full-time gallery artist. Abbett is recognized as a master in the field of sporting dog portraiture. His popularity and appeal have been attributed to allowing his subjects to remain individuals. In his dog images, for example, he incorporates a pose, or an expression, that makes the animal appear real and endearing. Abbett also spends significant time creating the “right” background for his images. By setting the perimeters of the story, the background supplies much of the narrative. Using his impressionistic style, Abbett often suggests time and space without giving all of the details. The intention is to draw viewers in and give them the opportunity to complete the picture with their own experiences. $7,000 - $10,000

Lynn Bogue Hunt was born in rural Honeoye Falls, New York, into a family that ran a small sawmill operation. He grew up with modest means, but spent hours outside exploring the natural surroundings in the woods near his home. He often collected birds and practiced taxidermy, a hobby that led to his accurate portrayal of his wildlife subjects. Hunt contributed illustrations to his own articles, as well as cover illustrations to magazines such as Field & Stream, Sports Afield, and Free Press. In his lifetime he painted for private collectors and companies, such as DuPont, illustrated over forty books, and produced roughly two hundred and fifty magazine covers. Though he spent much of his life far from nature in New York City, Hunt had a strong foundation as a knowledgeable outdoorsman, bird hunter, and fisherman, enabling him to accurately capture the essence of the outdoors. $10,000 - $15,000

A. B. Frost was born in Philadelphia in 1851, but spent his most prolific years in New Jersey. Considered one of the great illustrators of the Golden Age of Illustration, he illustrated more than ninety books and produced thousands of illustrations for Harper’s Weekly, Scribner’s, and Life magazines. Frost’s illustrative work chronicles the mood and details of the daily life of farmers, hunters, and fishermen, as well as barnyards and pastoral motifs.
This work, Grouse Shooting in the Rhododendrons, is the original watercolor reproduced by The Derrydale Press in a “set of four A.B. Frost prints published in 1933-34 [that] are easily the most desirable of all the sporting prints to own. Made under the supervision of John Frost, the artist’s second son, who himself hand-colored the first impressions,...these were done on the finest imported rag paper and the plates were destroyed after 200 copies were made.” This “grouse hunting scene with an excellent study of an English setter pointing a bird” is among Frost’s finest work.
By 1876, he was on Harper’s staff working on many books, including Tom Sawyer, Uncle Remus, and Mr. Dooley. He also illustrated Theodore Roosevelt’s sporting book, Hunting Trips of a Ranchman.

John Frost, called Jack, was born to noted sporting artist A.B. Frost in Philadelphia in 1890. Louis John Rhead was a highly respected illustrator during the Golden Age of Illustration from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. He was born in England to a family who for generations had been artistically involved in the pottery industry in Stoke-on-Trent. His father, George Woolliscroft Rhead, had a particular gift for pottery design and four of his eleven children entered the field. At the age of thirteen, Louis went to France for three years to study under Gustave Boulanger, with whom contemporary Frank W. Benson also studied. Upon returning to England he apprenticed at Mintons, the china factory, before winning a scholarship to the South Kensington Art School in London. He designed posters and book jackets for the English publisher Cassell. In 1883, an American publishing house called Appleton, offered him the position of art director which he accepted and subsequently moved to New York. In addition to his book illustrations, his poster work for periodicals including Century, Scribner’s, The Bookman, The New York Sun, and The Morning Journal were highly regarded. He collaborated with his brother George Wooliscroft Rhead to illustrate John Bunyan’s Pilgrim's Progress and Alfred Lord Tennyson’s Idylls of the King. In all, Rhead authored seven books on angling; the first of which
was The Speckled Brook Trout. Additionally, he illustrated many children’s books, including Swiss Family Robinson, Gulliver’s Travels, and Treasure Island. Rhead was an accomplished painter, designer, and author. He was a member of the New York Watercolor Society and the Architectural League. Rhead’s painting A Cool Spot in Leafy June captures the moment of truth when the trout is brought to net. The artist has masterfully painted a cold water stream in June. Sunlight dapples on the surface and shadows flicker across the rocks. The fisherman is completely focused on his task, oblivious to his rapt audience peering down from the bridge. His pipe is clenched between his teeth as he holds the bent fly rod high in his right hand while a creel is slung over his right shoulder. At the ready, he scoops his net through the water toward the tiring fish. The viewer anticipates the next second when the fish will be safely in the angler’s net. Rhead’s composition, especially his noteworthy use of light and shadow, reflects his talent and training. PROVENANCE: Milton C. Edmund Henry Osthaus was born in Hildesheim, Germany, in 1858. He was the son of a prosperous farmer who subsequently immigrated to Toledo, Ohio. Osthaus studied at the Royal Academy of the Arts in Dusseldorf from 1874 to 1882 with Andreas Muller, Peter Jansen, E. von Gebhardt, Ernst Deger, and wildlife and landscape painter Christian Kroner. In 1883, after studying painting for six years, Edmund Osthaus became an instructor at the Toledo Academy of Fine Arts. He served as the director from 1886-1893, refining his painting technique and pursuing his passions: hunting and fishing. In 1893 Osthaus dedicated his full attention to painting, shooting, and field trials. He was a charter member of the National Field Trial Association established in Newton, North Carolina, in 1895. “Edmund Osthaus followed field trials from the fall prairie chicken trials in Canada to the important quail trials in the South in midwinter, judging, sketching, and sometimes entering his dogs. He was a handsome, powerfully built man. "His artistic talent combined with his love of dogs enabled him to capture the essence of the focused working dog while depicting them in precise anatomical detail. Any painter who paints for shooting men had better be a shooting man himself, for no one is more jealously critical of detail than the man who knows guns and dogs and game... Edmund Osthaus, who trained and shot over his own setters and pointers, transformed oil paint into dog flesh quivering under the stress of a point." Harry A. Driscole was a renowned “piscatorial” artist who lived in Peekskill, New York. He specialized in painting game fish. A 1910 biography on the artist in Field and Stream notes, “He paints nothing else but fish and loves to pose them in the act of being captured in their native haunts. Like all good artists, he poses his subjects with imagination and sentiment, and is careful in his details to be absolutely correct in his delineation of a particular fish. He prefers at all times to paint from the real animal and makes a practice of painting pictures of fish for sportsmen who naturally wish to preserve a memento of some particularly good capture they have made when pursuing their craft on lakes and in running streams. There is no doubt that the picture of a fish caught in a dramatic attitude is really a finer memento of piscatorial prowess than any stuffed fish can be when nailed to a board, with, or without, the accompaniment of a glass box.” LITERATURE:

In his monograph on the artist, James A. Craig writes, “Frank Vining Smith enjoyed in his day the critical and monetary success most artists never attain. His work was exhibited coast to coast in the country’s most prestigious galleries and collected nationwide...His training had been among the finest: Frank W. Benson, Philip L. Hale and Edmund C. Tarbell would provide him with the tools necessary to excel in his chosen profession.” Smith, born in 1879 in Whitman, MA, settled in Hingham to a life of hunting, fishing, and creating art. Craig reports, “Beginning in the 1940s, Smith ... embraced sporting themes. Portrayals of wildlife and sporting subjects had been popularized by Winslow Homer in the late nineteenth century. By 1912, Smith’s former instructor Frank Benson was painting scenes of men hunting in forests or fishing in marshes, and these drew acclaim in his later years…such themes by Homer and Benson appealed to Bostonians…”
Craig continues, “‘Social interactions between local artists and affluent men from the business and professional worlds were unusually strong in Boston… The artistic depiction of outdoorsmen at moments of excellence was a direct extension of such social rituals of relaxation and competition. Smith followed their legacy and was acknowledged in his day as the heir to this tradition and one of the ‘three…leading living painters of sporting subjects in New England.’” Craig also notes, “Employing an interesting and somewhat unusual perspective, Smith often chose to feature encounters between wildlife and hunters, whether sudden and unexpected, or quiet and suspenseful.” Hello Baby is a classic flyfishing scene with vibrant brushstrokes and a peaceful atmosphere, where the startled deer share the canvas with a fisherman enjoying his lunch. Harry (given name Henry) Brown Baker was born in 1868 in Spencer, West Virginia. At age fifteen Baker travelled west and settled in Shawnee, Kansas. Perhaps it was Frederic Remington’s success in peddling pictures to locals in Kansas City that inspired Harry Baker to seek firsthand material for his own art. After marrying Maude Claire Hainer of Emporia, Kansas, in 1897, Harry Brown Baker moved with his bride to Oklahoma City where he earned a living as a travelling salesman for the McAlester Fuel Company of McAlester, located in the Choctaw region of Indian Territory. Travelling through Indian Territory that had been opened to white settlement by the Indian Appropriations Act of 1889, Baker was a witness to the clash of cultures on the southern frontier and the life of cowboys and settlers. With the exception of some inspiration from Remington, it is probable that Baker was a self-taught artist. He achieved a measure of success in selling his work to eastern publishing companies as illustrations for use in the bourgeoning market for low-priced books of adventure stories about life in the West. Harry Baker’s limited commercial success with his art perhaps motivated him to seek out serious instruction. At the time Paris was the location of art schools favored by American artists, so in 1904 Harry and Maude, who was also a self-taught artist herself, took the train to New York and sailed to Europe. The formal instruction he received in Paris had an important effect on Baker’s preferred profession and upon returning home in 1906, he became a full-time artist and illustrator of books and magazines. He continued his studies at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art, founded by William Merritt Chase in 1896, where he became a protégé of Frank Alva Parsons (1866-1930). Promoted to be director of the school, Parsons hired Baker to teach life drawing. Baker and Maude moved back to Paris again for the 1927-28 academic year during which time he taught at the New York School’s Paris ateliers. Baker continued teaching at the New York School, subsequently known as the Parsons School of Design, until his death in 1941. He was survived by his wife who passed away in 1946.

Robert Farrington Elwell was born in Boston in 1874 to a stone mason. He studied to be a civil engineer and pursued art on the side. While sketching Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show for The Boston Globe in 1892, he caught the cowboy showman’s attention. William F. Cody invited Elwell out West, where he went in 1896 and ultimately became Cody’s ranch manager and close friend.

Get an old pack saddle & practice packing on one of your horses.” Cody fondly continues, “Say what kind of a cook are you? I agree to cook if you will learn how to pack. I am going to make an all round Mountain Man of you. I hope we will spend many years together in our beloved mountains. And you will be known as Buffalo Bill’s Rocky Mountain Artist.” He asks, “Did I tell you that Schreyvogel stayed with the show three weeks. Taking photographs and making studies. He is now painting the Battle of Summit Springs and I will bring it with me this fall.” At the end of the three-page letter, Cody adds on, “I can hard wait for Nov the 5th. The day we leave E. with our little pack outfit. And push off into the Rockies.”
Elwell managed the T E Ranch Headquarters, Buffalo Bill’s ranch located on the Shoshone River, near the Wapiti Ridge in Wyoming. The National Register of Historic Places application for the ranch notes, “two or three carefully stacked piles of horns and antlers---some of them shed, some the result of winter kills and others trophies of the chase. Because these horn-pile collections must have been started as far back as the time of Buffalo Bill himself, they represent the best selections off of a great former wildlife winter range area.”
Elwell’s painting depicts a pack horse drenched in golden light walking along the Wapiti Ridge in Wyoming. The horse follows a man, who is hinted at with a foot, and carries a prized elk antler through the rocky landscape. Indeed, as noted in the Boston Globe, “In [Elwell’s] pictures and writings he lives over again much of the life he lived with Buffalo Bill in the Wild West show, on the ranches, on the prairies, foothills and mountain trails. And you feel the thrill of his enthusiasm for the great outdoors in all the pictures.”
A 1907 letter from Cody to Elwell documents the preparation and excitement for a fall pack trip that year and for future trips with other famous artists. Cody writes, “I’m glad you like the mountains. Schreyvogel wanted to make the trip with us this fall but I told him no, not this fall but next fall he can go. Remington, Russell the Cowboy artist, also Lenders the artist all want to go. All these artists are wild to study our fast disappearing West.”
A folder of snapshots taken by Elwell from 1898-1900 can be found in the McCracken Research Library, and the artist’s work can be found in the Whitney Western Art Museum. Both the library and the museum are at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming. He died in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1962.
He goes on to discuss details, “Say if all goes well we will ride leave E Nov. 5. That will give us ten days shooting big game before the season closes Nov 15. This painting depicting two setters in the field was commissioned in 1901 by Samuel Henry Vandergrift. Samuel, born in 1866 in Oil City, Pennsylvania, was the son of Captain Jacob J. Vandergrift, an American industrialist who rose from cabin boy to oil industry tycoon. Historian John T. Flynn writes, “After the war he moved to Oil City, drilled for oil, and built a refinery. He was a pipe line pioneer, building a four-mile carrier…which by additions and extensions was one day to expand into that far-flung tangle of pipes owned by the Standard.” Captain Vandergrift was the Vice President of the National Refiners’ Association to John D. Rockefeller’s President, and his cooperation was key to forming Standard Oil. Among other pursuits, J.J. was also a principle investor in the Apollo Iron and Steel Company. A planned community for his workers, Vandergrift, PA, bears his name.
Vancroft Kennel was a highly decorated, prize-winning operation run by Vandergrift’s brother Joseph. In 1902, the New York Times reported, “Vandergrift, also of Pittsburg, owner of the Van Croft Kennels, swept everything before him in the English setter classes, the leader being Champion Barton Tory, pronounced by Eastern judges at the New York show to be the finest type of English setter in the world.” The kennel imported setters from abroad in the early 1900s, including Queen’s Place Pride and Queen’s Pride.
Samuel entered the family oil and banking businesses, including Apollo, the Pittsburgh Trust Company and Keystone Bank, among others. He managed the family estate and pursued his gentlemanly hobbies of yachting, shooting, fishing, and power boat racing. He was a member of the American Ornithologists’ Union, and in 1903 he won the Herron Hill Gun Club Championship. Vandergrift entered his setter, David Copperfield, in the all-ages stakes of the Monongahela Club’s field trial in 1898, with the dog, “ranging and hunting in a stylish and merry way, which produced favorable impressions as to his work…After over an hour’s trial they were ordered up.” He was on the board as a founding member of the Duquesne Kennel Club and was also an active member of the New York Yacht Club, the Thousand Islands Yacht Club, and the Nittany Rod & Gun Club.
Gustav Muss-Arnolt specialized in the depiction of hunters and their dogs. He worked as a judge in dog shows, served on the board of the American Kennel Club from 1906-1909, and demonstrated an incredible knowledge of a variety of sporting breeds in his paintings. Throughout his career, Muss-Arnolt’s illustrations were published in many magazines such as Harper’s Weekly and the American Kennel Club Gazette. He worked steadily for many years, creating commissions for magazines such as Collier’s, The Saturday Evening Post, Gray’s Sporting Journal, and many others. Golden’s exuberant, colorful paintings appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and he was voted one of the magazine’s top ten artists of all time. HARRY AND JUDY BEXTEL COLLECTION Harry, like fellow architect and decoy collector Joel Barber (1876–1952), was drawn to the decoy as a truly American art form. The Bextels began collecting decoys over 35 years ago and quickly immersed themselves in the field, forming a special relationship with Mark McNair. For early patrons, such as Barrie and Bernice Stavis and the Bextels among others, McNair created some of his best work. Harry spent much of his career as an associate with the renowned architectural firm Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates where he designed spaces for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City from 1967 until his retirement in 2011.

A search through our extensive decoy library does not reveal a finer paint execution on an Illinois River preener than that found on this elegant hen. Many in the decoy collecting field consider this to be the finest Graves decoy ever to be offered for sale due to its combination of ideal paint, exquisite form, and near mint condition. Graves built the Graves Decoy Company out of the workshop behind his home. Upon the death of Robert Elliston in 1915, Graves purchased Elliston’s entire business including wood, patterns, tools, and commissioned rigs. He also astutely hired Catherine Elliston to continue painting decoys for his company. As with fellow Illinois River masters Elliston and Perdew, Graves produced preeners and this graceful form is the most coveted by collectors today. The high placement of the glass eyes evolved from his early, Elliston-influenced pieces. Graves’s middle and later period carvings have eye placement more in the center of the head. Graves sold decoys to wealthy hunters and to sporting goods stores for the handsome sum of $75 - $100 per dozen and his decoys today continue to demand a premium among collectors. The decoy is finished with aluminum wing tips and a special two-piece copper bottom plate which, when unlatched, serves as a keel. John Schweikart lived and worked in Detroit. John and his brother Carl were motor boat and racing yacht builders. In addition to serving as the president of Schweikart Boat
Works, John would sail his own boat, The Huntress, to victory in regattas and to his camp on Strawberry Island on Lake St. Clair to hunt and fish. Mackey’s American Bird Decoys and Joel Barber’s Wild Fowl Decoys both begin their first chapter with stories of Dudley decoys and the authors’ reverence for them. Barber’s particular love of Dudleys is illustrated in the first three plates of his book; the first of which depicts two Dudley decoys prominently displayed top and center on a collection wall. In 1981 a panel of experts reviewing the decoy collection at the Shelburne Museum declared a Dudley decoy of Barber’s to be the best of the museum’s collection. This decoy is one of the finest Dudley carvings ever to be offered at auction. The artist’s special treatment of the wing separation and pinch-breast carving sets it apart from most of the maker’s forms. William J. Mackey, Jr., in his book American Bird Decoys, was so impressed with Dudley’s work that he wrote, “the heads on Dudley’s decoys are the finest the writer has ever seen.” This rare example carries excellent provenance and is in very good condition by Dudley standards. These two points cannot be overstated when considering Dudley decoys. The provenance leads directly from the George and Hope Wick Collection to the current consignor. Related examples from this rig are painted as bluebill drakes, and some consider this decoy to be a bluebill hen - an equally important and rare Dudley.

The Dudley decoy has always been known for its bold, singular form and this carving exemplifies all of the desirable attributes one looks for. To draw from Gene and Linda Kangas’ Decoys: A North American Survey, “A visual study of the complete Dudley bird form, whatever the species, reveals an uninterrupted flow from bill tip to tail’s end. The successful manner in which the bill fits into the lower cheeks, the cut of the neck-base, sweeping powerful chest, and smooth, curved body combine into one of the finer sculptural solutions in the decoy world...The Dudley carving style consistently depicts both the head and body forms as a totality, resulting in a fine sculptural portrait…” The underside retains the original weight, a paper label with “66”, and an “E.L.M.” brand. A double stamp of the brand appears on the back as well. According to North Carolina decoy historian Kroghie Andresen the rig brand is from Pocahontas Fowling Club member Edward L. Maher. The form, execution, rarity, condition, and provenance of this hen place it among the finest North Carolina decoys to ever be offered for sale at auction. PROVENANCE: E.L.M. Soper’s iconic stick-up Canada goose decoys have made a lasting impression on decoy enthusiasts. Only a half-dozen Soper stick-ups in varying poses have surfaced. These decoys have found their way into some of the most important decoy collections ever assembled, including those of Joel Barber, William J. Mackey, Jr., Quintina Colio, and the Shelburne Museum. The United States State Department selected a pair of Soper geese to be exhibited at the 1970 World’s Fair in Osaka, Japan. According to New Jersey decoy historian Grove Conrad, Joel Barber was taken by these stick-ups and had intended to use one for the frontispiece of his unfinished book. This hollow decoy features graceful lines and simple paint design. Original paint with even gunning wear, an age line, professional repair to neck base, darkening to rubs on body, and working wash over white. The exquisite paint on this decoy, from the intricate ticking on the face to the vermiculation on the back and banding on tail, is among the finest seen on any Massachusetts shorebird carving. It carefully represents spring plumage. The body features feather-light hollow construction. The paint has an excellent dry surface. Decoys by this maker have at times been attributed to Tom Wilson, with two examples recently approaching and surpassing the $100,000 mark at auction. This decoy is one of the premier Massachusetts shorebirds in existence. Excellent original paint with even gunning wear, roughness to very tip of original bill and wing tips, and the underside has a faint age line, and flattening around the stick hole for resting. Hailing from the rig of J. C. Willis, this plump plover sits at the zenith of all Holmes shorebirds that have surfaced. The likeness of species in this carving is striking. Crowell shipped his bounty from Cape Cod to Boston via rail.

An exceptional breast-preening eider drake exhibiting the maker’s finest form. This boldly carved coastal gunning decoy measures a full 18 inches in length and a stout 9 inches in width. The bird is carved perfectly to scale with its content head inletted in the body. The decoy’s clean lines flow over its raised wings through to its uplifted tail.
drove carvers to produce big, solid decoys with modest paint patterns. “Seaworthiness, durability, practicality, effectiveness and affordability were essential considerations...Wilson’s genius is demonstrated by his ability to work within those existing traditions, yet elevate the Maine decoy to a higher level of artistic achievement.”
Wilson was born “Down East,” on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Though he is foremost remembered as carver, he was also a boat builder, waterman, outdoorsman, and lighthouse keeper. He was an attendant to a number of Maine’s lighthouses, including the Great Duck Island Light, Goose Rocks Station on Fox Island, Two Lights Station on Cape Elizabeth, Marshall Point Light at Port Clyde and lastly Spring Point Light in Casco Bay. According to art historian Gene Kangas, “his job as a lighthouse keeper provided financial security and ample time to facilitate rapid artistic advancement. Imaginative decoys and wildlife carvings being shaped in an incredible variety of poses.”
Wilson’s interests were, by no means, limited to decoys. He carved a variety of songbirds, decoratives, weathervanes, and big cats. A pair of Wilson’s tigers are featured in the American Identities exhibit, on display as a part of the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, New York. Goose decoys by this maker are extremely rare. A bold, hollow carving with pronounced eye grooves, glass eyes, and V-carved raised primaries. This decoy was part of a rig of geese and black ducks ordered from Watson by a Hampton Bay, Long Island bayman in 1928. His rig brand "ACP" is impressed twice in the bottom. A hole in the bottom reveals that this was possibly used as a field decoy. Mostly original paint with touch-up to areas of filled nails and some over-paint professionally removed. Made by the Ward brothers in 1929, this decoy is from the rig of the Excelsior Brass Gun Club. The Club was located on Deal Island, Maryland, on the southern edge of the Dames Quarter Marsh. The Club was also known as the Dunwurken Club and simply referred to as the Deal Island Club. The Club was started in the early years of the 20th century, when the lure of wildfowl shooting reached its peak of popularity. 372

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE 1 Your bidding on items indicates your acceptance of the following Terms and Conditions of sale by Copley Fine Art Auctions, LLC. These terms are subject to amendment before or during the sale. Copley Fine Art Auctions, LLC operates as an agent of the seller only, and is not responsible in any way in the event the seller or buyer fails to fulfill their respective agreements. In all instances the auctioneer’s interpretation of these conditions is final and binding on all bidders. 2 All bids are per lot as numbered in the catalog unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer. The sales price shall consist of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium, plus any applicable sales tax. A buyer’s premium of 20% (23% for online bidding) of the final bid price up to and including $1,000,000, plus 15% of the final bid price over $1,000,000, will be applied to each lot sold, to be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. 3 The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid that, in his opinion, is not commensurate with the value of the lot. 4 The auctioneer has the sole right to re-offer a lot and/or settle disputed bids. The record of sale kept by the auction house will be taken as final in the event of dispute. Additionally, items may be withdrawn at any time prior to the offering of each lot. 5 All goods are sold “as is” and all sales are final with no exchanges or refunds. Copley Fine Art Auctions, LLC and its consignors make no representations or warranties as to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, the correctness of the catalog or other description of physical condition, quality, size, medium, importance, rarity, provenance or historical relevance of any property, and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice, or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty or representation or an assumption of liability. The purchaser assumes complete responsibility for items at the fall of the hammer. 6 Successful bidders are to pay for their purchases during or immediately after the sale or upon receipt of an invoice, unless other arrangements have been authorized in writing by the auction house. Payment may be made by cash or good check payable to Copley Fine Art Auctions, LLC. The auction house reserves the right to hold property until checks clear. A monthly service charge of 1.5% will be added to unpaid balances beginning 30 days after the sale date. A $50.00 fee will be added for returned checks. If a check fails to clear after the second deposit, the purchaser will be held responsible for any and all fees incurred until we have collected good funds. 7 If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all items for which it was the highest successful bidder, Copley Fine Art Auctions, LLC may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) canceling the sale, and applying any payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchaser’s breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the purchaser has failed to pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale. 8 Condition reports are not included in this catalog. It is the responsibility of prospective bidders to examine lots and decide their level of interest. Neither the auctioneer, Copley Fine Art Auctions, LLC, nor the consignor is responsible for the accuracy of any printed or verbal descriptions. Copley Fine Art Auctions, LLC strongly encourages clients to attend our previews and auctions so as to best determine condition of lots. Due to the high volume of condition requests, Copley Fine Art Auctions, LLC reserves the right to reject requests at its sole discretion. All weights and measurements are approximate. 9 Some of the lots in this sale carry reserves or minimum selling prices. This is a confidential figure set by the consignor and the auction house below which a lot will not be sold. The reserve will not exceed the low estimate, and the
auction house will execute the reserve bids by bidding for the consignor. Estimates are subject to change at any time prior to the offering of each lot. 10 Absentee and telephone bids will be executed when possible as a convenience to customers: the auction house will not be held responsible for any errors or failures to accurately execute bids. All absentee and telephone bids must be received at least 24 hours before the start of the sale. 11 Buyers wishing to pick up items at the sale must do so by the end of the sale. Buyers wishing to pick up items after the auction at our office may do so only by appointment starting five days after the sale. We kindly ask that all items be removed from our warehouse within 30 days of auction end to avoid a $5 daily storage fee. 12 Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer. Upon request, we will provide a list of shippers who deliver within the United States and overseas. Once your payment has cleared, items may be released for shipment. Copley Fine Art Auctions, LLC shall have no liability for any loss or damage to such items. Buyers should allow up to four weeks for shipment. 13 Copley Fine Art Auctions, LLC may, at its discretion and at the buyer’s request, package and ship sold items as directed by the purchaser. In such instances 1) the buyer shall prepay all related expenses, and 2) the buyer agrees that all packaging, handling and shipment is at the sole risk of the purchaser, and Copley Fine Art Auctions, LLC shall have no liability for any loss or damage to such items. Buyer should allow four to five weeks for shipment. 14 Some property sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the United States, such as items that include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute delay or cancellation in payment for the total purchase price of these lots. 15 Bidding increments will normally follow the pattern below, but may vary at the sole discretion of the auctioneer:
