offered to Winkelman and Hayden homes, schools, and public buildings constructed pre-1978. The program is being offered by Central Arizona Association of Governments (CAG), who has worked on other issues in our communities before. Lead based paint has been banned in the U.S. since 1978 due to its’ dangerous effects towards our health. Although banned, many of the homes, buildings, and schools in our area could still be at risk. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, lead paint can be found in: 24% of homes built from 1960-1978 69% of homes built from 1940-1960 87% of homes built before 1940 It is important to know that lead’s damaging effects are even greater for children. If you have children within your household, you are a priority for this program. Other homes with lead will also qualify.

Copper Basin Helps Celebrate Arizona Trail in a Day
W
ALONG THE GILA By Sam Hosler Special to Copper Area News
ell, it was quite a day. Weeks of planning and the work of many volunteers made the Arizona Trail in a Day a very successful event. Every section of the trail was walked, run, cycled or horse-ridden, so thousands of miles were walked by all participants to ensure that all 400 miles of trail, from Mexico to Utah, were covered. The people of Superior put on quite a festive event, welcoming and ferrying trekkers and having an end-ofday celebration. The welcoming party from Kearny was a bit smaller, consisting of my wife, Carol, and yours truly, but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We welcomed two teachers from the Casa Grande system and two large groups from Mesa, Queen Creek, and Scottsdale. The Williams family from Scottsdale, Robert and Monique and their teenage sons, brought a fifth participant, a burro named Luna. Monique makes her living training wild burros, and her dream is to have a burro tame enough to be a good trail companion. Monique would love to do the whole Arizona Trail with Luna, and this weekend was the first test of Luna’s trail compatibility. And wouldn’t you know it – we were at the trailhead when a Jeep Wrangler pulled up containing Bob Jordan and Joe Norris from Kearny. It turn out that they travel the road most weekends and pick up the garbage that inconsiderate people leave on the roads and at the trailheads. Carol and I had already picked up the trash at the trailhead, so they waved and continued on their way. The trail season has arrived. In the Fall trekkers most often go from Utah to Mexico. In the Spring they go the other way, following the weather. The hikers this weekend were out for the special event, but many of them use the trail throughout the year. It was encouraging to hear for Continued on page 5

GILA
Continued from page 4 ourselves that Kearny is, indeed, known as the friendliest town on the Arizona Trail. This is also the time of year when our winter residents start arriving. I spotted my first snowbird, Phyllis Griswould, at church this Sunday. It’s good to have old friends back again. The big light above the mountains in the West proved to be a SpaceX rocket, brightly making its way into the atmosphere and then safely making a return landing in California. Many people posted some very good photographs on FaceBook. This is a good month for young people. On Saturday, Oct. 20, Norm’s IGA is sponsoring its Pumpkin Patch with all kinds of events especially for children. The next Saturday, Oct. 27, there is a Haunted House in Winkelman and the Great Pumpkin/Trunk or Treat on Alden Road in Kearny. Then there is Hallowe’en itself, with the trick or treaters going house to house on Wednesday, Oct. 31. I like this weather. I like living in the Copper Basin, and I like the people who live here. Let’s all be positive and make this area even greater.

Honorary coach leads Hayden to lopsided win By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The No. 6-ranked Hayden football team bounced back after a loss at No. 2 Superior a week ago by routing NFL Yet Academy on Homecoming and Senior Night last Friday, 59 – 0. Current Lobos head coach John Estrada, the players and coaching staff dedicated the win to one of Estrada’s high school coaches, Coach Peter Guzman. “He’s in a battle himself,” Estrada said of Guzman. “But, once again, he took the helm of our big blue machine as our honorary coach. It was an honor having him there and on the sideline. It brought back a lot of memories for me.” Friday’s win improved the Lobos’ record to 5 – 2, including 4 – 1 in 1A East Region, second to first-place Superior. “Our kids played well,” Estrada said. “They executed well, did their job, and were physical. We needed that after the loss last week. Is was a good win for our team and our seniors.” As the regular season ends this Friday, the Lobos are expecting to make a deep run in the playoffs. “Our goal is to make a run and play in the finals,” Estrada said. “We’ll need to play our best football from here on out. We’re healthy and we’ll be ready for the challenge.” Up next: The Lobos face their stiffest challenge to
date this Friday, when they travel to play top-ranked Williams. “Playing the No. 1 team on the road will be a big challenge for us,” Estrada said. “We’ll need to play hard
and just play football. There is no pressure on us. We’ll see how we play with the top dog. Regardless of the outcome, we’re in the big dance.” Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Undermanned Ray clinging to playoff berth following loss By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The No. 10 Ray football team suffered two losses last Friday night and now must hope a third can be averted. The Bearcats, who were handicapped from the start, were defeated by second-ranked Superior in their regular-season finale last Friday night, 56 – 14. As a result, the Copper Helmet will not return to Kearny for at least another year. “I think our boys stepped up big as far as intensity,” said Ray assistant coach Jimmy Fessenden. “The score might not reflect it, but we played hard and aggressive. “It’s hard enough to beat a team like Superior, but it’s even harder when you only have 12 kids dressed out.” As if the first two results aren’t bad enough, the 4 – 4 Bearcats must wait and hope that they don’t fall out of the top 12 when the final rankings are released on Oct. 16. Only the top 12 teams earn berths in the 1A playoffs, which begin on Friday, Oct. 19. “Come playoffs, assuming we get in, we should be healthy and ready to roll,” Fessenden said. “Our younger kids have gotten a lot of playing time these last few weeks and that should make us a deeper team.”

Town of Winkelman receives donation from APS Winkelman, AZ – At the Winkelman Town Council meeting on September 10, Mayor Bracamonte and members of the council had a pleasant surprise in the form of a vehicle donation from APS.
Mayor Bracamonte had approached APS Community Affairs Manager, Richard Rosales, about the great need for a vehicle for official staff use and after applying and further approval, Winkelman was awarded
the six-passenger extended cab Chevy truck. Rosales, APS Key Account Manager Steve Chasse and APS Supervisor Bryan Goslin presented the truck to the full council
who arrived early for the presentation where Bracamonte praised APS for their support of the smaller communities where a vehicle donation like this is paramount to conducting daily business.
