Letter to the Editor: Local schools are on their own Editor, San Manuel Miner and Oracle Towne Crier: Reforms First! Vote NO on School Bond is a catchy, but very misleading slogan. The Oracle School bond has nothing to do with school instruction. It is for major repairs and new buildings. Arizona used to have rich school districts and poor school districts. In 1980, a major school reform law attempted to equalize tax rates and spending per pupil across the state. This law did not include bonding capacity for school districts and left out equalization for building new schools and making major repairs. The courts ordered the state to equalize the process for building schools in the 1990s and Arizona then began to fund schools for new buildings and major repairs through the State Facilities Board. The ability for districts to pass bonds was kept, so schools could build better facilities than the minimum the state was willing to pay for.

Oct. 5 An accident with injuries was reported in the 39000 block of South Mountain Shadow Drive, Eagle Crest. A woman drove into a retention wash.
When the state began to seriously cut school budgets five years ago, the State Facilities Board ran out of money and stopped funding school building and repair projects. Arizona is now back to having only local funding for major school building projects. Most of the instruction money the state gives schools each year is not allowed to be used for these major projects. As a tiny school district in a rural area, without large
student growth, Oracle never received much money from the State Facilities Board for repairs. The last time Oracle passed a school bond was before SaddleBrooke existed, back when Oracle was a very poor district. This bond will be used to remodel all restroom facilities, the cafeteria and many of the existing classrooms that range from 20 to 60 years old. It will update lighting, electric systems and
heating and cooling. Two new buildings will be constructed, replacing a 1958 building and a portable building for middle school and special education students. A storage building will be added for equipment and supplies. Four buses will

Oracle to host three-on-three soccer tournament By John Hernandez Do you and your friends have some fierce soccer moves you want to show everyone? How’s your drag back? How about your hook turn? The Oracle Community Schools plans to give you your chance to really shine The Oracle Community Schools is sponsoring a 3V3 soccer tournament to be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Mountain Vista School. One of the fastest growing forms of soccer in the world, 3V3 is also known as
the “small sided game.” It has been popularized by Nike with thousands of tournaments taking place in the United States each year. The 3V3 soccer format is a modified version of soccer played on a smaller field with both teams each having three players on the field. Players play both offense and defense with no goalies allowed. The size of the field is 30 yards wide by 40 yards long with goal nets approximately 4’ by 8’. The goal box is approximately 6 by 10 feet. The goal zone cannot be defended or
entered by either team. The games consist of two 8-minute halves or the first team to reach 12 goals, whichever comes first. There is a two minute break at half time. There are no time-outs and the clock runs continuously. Goals can only be scored from within a team’s offensive half of the field. More specific rules will be provided at registration. There are numerous YouTube videos online if you want to view what 3V3 soccer looks like. You can also Google 3V3 soccer
and for information and coaching strategy. One of the YouTube sites is http://youtv.be/ gyN56Eb6228. 3V3 soccer has been designed as one of the best ways to develop players of all ages plus it is lots of fun. Because there are only three players on the field for each team, they are more active and involved in the action of the game. This helps to develop individual skills including mental quickness and physical agility. It is a much faster paced game with more scoring. The divisions

‘Friends’ in need get a helping hand from Pinal County Attorney By John Hernandez The Pinal County Attorney’s Office has helped the Friends of Oracle State Park (FOSP) and Arizona State Parks get closer to their funding goal which will enable them to re-open Oracle State Park and provide environmental education programs for youth. Last week, Pinal County
Attorney James P. Walsh presented Cindy Krupicka, President of FOSP, with a check for $2,500. The funding was made available through Pinal County’s RICO funds. The money will be used to support the unique outdoor education programs at the park that combines classroom studies with a fun and
educational field trip to Oracle State Park. The programs are offered to schools/teachers in the Tri-Community as well as the greater Tucson area. These youth programs such as Adventure (first-third grades) and Odyssey (fourth-sixth grade) give kids positive experiences which help them make positive
choices in their lives. It allows youth to become aware of alternatives to gangs, drugs and violence. Many of these kids have never camped, hiked, experienced the outdoors or visited a state park. Experiencing the park and learning about nature in this educational environment can have a positive influence on a

Award winning music to benefit RLV OracleArt By John Hernandez It is not often that a musician who has performed in Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center comes to Oracle, let alone a Grammy nominated and Native American Music Award (NAMA) winner. But on Saturday, Oct. 29, Dawn Avery will be performing in concert along with Grammy Award winner Larry Mitchell at the Wilson Barn. Dawn is a vocalist and cello player of Mohawk descent. She will be performing Native American Traditional and Contemporary music along with Mitchell. They are re-releasing their new album “Our Fire.” The concert will begin with a Mohawk thanksgiving and healing ceremony.
Dawn has performed with musicians from all over the world including Luciano Pavarotti and Sting. She has sung songs in English, Spanish, Ancient Greek, Iroquois and Mohawk. Her compositions have won numerous awards. Dawn has performed at Montreux, Copenhagen, Helsinki and Banlieu Bleu Jazz festivals in Europe. She is also an educator, influencing future musicians as Professor of Music at Montgomery College in Maryland where she produces an annual World Arts Festival. Mitchell is a guitarist, solo artist, sideman and music producer. He has toured as a sideman playing guitar for musical artists including Billy Squier, Ric Ocusek and Tracy

Miners cage Tigers 14 – 7 in Globe; Hawks up next By Frank Smith The San Manuel varsity football Miners were on the hunt for a win after a tough loss in Benson where the Bobcats snuck away with the spoils. San Manuel headed up to Globe on Friday night, caging the Tigers and returning with the 14 – 7 victory. The Miners were without starting quarterback Marcos Sierra due to an injury – stepping in to take over the quarterback duties was Vincent Valdez who did not miss a beat as San Manuel took full advantage of the running back abilities of Valdez in the ‘wildcat offense.’ In the first quarter, the Miners received the opening kick off at their own 34 yard line and punted the ball away after three plays on their first possession. The Tigers also punted the ball away after starting out at their own 35 yard line, when safety Phil Adami tipped the pass away on a third and six forcing the punt. On their second possession of the night from their own 33 yard line, the Miners would again punt the ball back to the Tigers after three plays. The Tigers began their drive at their own 34 yard line and drove down to the Miners 26 yard line in eight plays. On the next play the Globe quarterback dropped back firing a pass down to the six See Miners, Page 11

Continued from Page 10 yard line where cornerback Mariano Lopez jumped up to catch the pass for the interception – returning it to the nine. Now in the second quarter, San Manuel would take over at their own nine yard line where the Miners would put together an efficient ground attack moving the ball down field using four different ball carriers with Valdez, running backs Daniel Perez, Jared Gonzales, and John Ruiz picking up big gains in the process. The Miners would bring the ball down to the Tigers’ six yard line in 11 plays – capping off the drive with Valdez rumbling up the middle for the six yard touchdown run. The two point conversion failed for a 6 – 0 lead with 4:01 left in the half. Globe began the drive from their own 27 yard line after the kick off. The Tigers drove down to the 39 yard line facing a third and three to go for the first when Valdez from his linebacker spot made the hit on the Tigers’ running back causing the fumble with the Miners recovering the ball to kill the drive for Globe. The Miners’ offense lined up at the Tigers’ 44 yard line with time running out in the half. The Miners nearly had a big play when Gonzales ran the ball down to the 36 yard line but it was called back on a penalty. The Miners were now lined up at their own 48 where Valdez kept the ball to run time out in the first half to take a 6 – 0 lead into the half. In the third quarter, the Tigers came out hungry starting out their drive at their own 37 yard line and moving the ball down to the Miners’ 19 yard line in seven plays. On the eighth play of the drive running back Jonny Renteria took the hand off and went left to right for the 19 yard touchdown run. The PAT kick was good for the 7 – 6 Tigers lead early in the third quarter. San Manuel would answer the call on their ensuing possession as return man Mariano Lopez returned the kick off back to the 45 yard See Miners, Page 13

JV Miners fall to Benson, take down Globe
By Frank Smith The San Manuel Junior Varsity fell to Benson 30 – 6 but took down Globe 28 – 16 with both games at home. The Miners hosted the Benson JV Bobcats Sept. 29, taking the loss but picking up some valuable game time. The Bobcats scored on their opening drive in eight plays capped off by a one yard touchdown run by running back Mike Greer. The two point conversion was stopped by Jonathon Croci for 6 – 0 Benson lead with 6:25 in the first quarter. San Manuel could not get on the score board giving up the ball on punts and turnovers to go into the half down 6 – 0. The Bobcats would get back on the scoreboard after a 68 yard, 14 play drive capped off by a five yard run into the end zone the two point conversion was good for a 14 – 0 Benson lead late in the third quarter with 3:36 left on the clock. San Manuel could not sustain a drive as they turned over the ball on downs on their next possession but got the ball back three plays after safety Armando Sierra
intercepted a Bobcat pass to give the Miners the ball at the Benson 35 yard line. The Miners would return the favor three plays later as the Miners pass was intercepted at the Benson 30 yard line and returned to the San Manuel 25 yard line. The Bobcats would make quick work of the drive – scoring three plays later a 22 yard pass for a touchdown. The two point conversion was good for a 22 – 0 Benson lead with 8:55 in the fourth quarter. The Miners would finally get on the scoreboard as they began a drive from their own 20 yard line. San Manuel would move the ball down field from runs by running backs Shane Kelly, Ben Quijada and quarterback Adrian Torres. The Miners put together an eight play 80 yard drive capped off by a 15 yard pass from Torres to wide receiver Jaime Lopez. The two point conversion was no good for a 6 – 22 score with 5:26 left in the fourth quarter. Benson would put another scoring drive together a 51 yard 10 play drive capped
off with a two yard run into the end zone with :14 left in the game. The two point conversion was good for a 30 – 6 lead and final score. In the Globe game on Oct. 6, the Miners were on the other end of the spectrum as they took down Globe 28 – 16. The Miners wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as they scored on the opening drive putting together a 65 yard 6 play drive with big plays coming from Torres to Quijada for a 25 yard gain and Torres running it in from 30 yards out for the touchdown. The two point conversion by Kelly was good for 8 – 0 lead early in the first quarter. San Manuel’s defense forced the punt after five plays. Quijada would return the punt to the Tigers’ 38 yard line. On the first play of the drive, Anthony Lopez took the ball down to the 15 yard line on a huge pick up. The Miners gained five free yards for an off sides penalty. Torres gained two yards to the eight. Lopez would then cap off the drive with an eight yard run into the end zone. The two

Stephen Faulstich scored on a 53 yard run the first time the Miners touched the ball. On the Miners’ second possession Faulstich scored on a 30 yard run. Armando Lopez scored both extra-point conversions to make it

In the second half, Isidro Wasko scored on a 42 yard counter and Joseph Lopez scored the two point conversion to make it 30-0. Andrew Gomez scored the final touchdown on a six yard run. Joseph Lopez scored on the two point conversion to make the final score 38-0.
“The defense did a great job keeping Oracle out of the inzone,” said head coach Dave Jungbluth. “We were much bigger than Oracle so they had a difficult time blocking us. Considering how young Oracle is I think Coach Jennings has done a good job with his young team. You have to give Oracle credit. They did not back down.” The Junior High Miners hosted Eloy on Tuesday and will await the seedings for playoffs which begin Oct. 18.
point conversion was no good for a 14 – 0 score with 6:53 left on the clock in the first quarter. The Miners’ defense would get the ball back for the offense – this time on downs. The San Manuel offense lined up at their own 40 yard line, moving the ball down to the 12 yard line in eight plays where the drive was capped off by Lopez with a 12 yard touchdown run. The two point conversion was no good for a 20 – 0 lead for the Miners with 10:33 in the second quarter. The Tigers would get on the scoreboard after getting a safety for two points on a high punt snap into the end zone. Globe cut into the lead 2 – 20 with 2:19 left in the second quarter. The first half would end with the score 20 – 2 with the Miners leading. In the third quarter, Anthony Lopez came to life from his safety position on the defensive side of the ball – causing a fumble on the fourth play of the opening drive for the Tigers. The Miners would take over at their 37 yard line but punted the ball away four plays later. Globe would take over at their own 41. Three plays later line backer Colten Smith recovered a fumble and returned it to the Tigers’ 29 yard line to give the Miners the short field. The Miners cashed in on the miscue four plays later as quarterback Richard Romo
called his own number and ran it in for the touchdown from nine yards out. The two point conversion by Quijada was good for a 28 – 2 lead with 5:07 in the third quarter. The Miners’ defense went to work holding the Tigers to two scores. Globe scored on a two yard keeper with the two point conversion no good for an 8 – 28 score with :50 left in the third. The Tigers put together a six play 56 yard drive.
The Tigers scored once more, this time on the final drive of the night putting together a 70 yard six play drive capped off with a five yard run into the end zone. The two point conversion was good for a final of 28 – 16 with the Miners taking the win. The JV was on the road to Tucson to take on Tanque Verde on Monday and will be home on Thursday, Oct. 20, to host Pusch Ridge at 6 p.m.

score. Valdez also converted on the two point conversion for the Miner lead at 14 – 7 with 2:18 on the clock in the third quarter. The Miners’ offense would not score again but the Miners’ defense came up strong to preserve the win for San Manuel. The next possession for the Tigers would begin at their own 20 yard line. On the fourth play of the drive for Globe from the San Manuel 47, safety Kyle Bowman dove and intercepted a Tiger pass at the Miners’ 18 drive yard line to turn away the threat. The Miners punted the ball back to the Tigers after four plays. The Miners’ defense would once again have to keep the Tigers in check. Globe began their drive at their own 44 yard line, on the seventh play of the drive the Tigers completed a pass to the San Manuel 33 yard line. A couple of plays later, defensive end Anthony Garcia came up with the big play, knocking the ball loose from the Tigers’ running back with Valdez recovering the ball for the Miners to keep Globe from tying up the score or possibly taking the lead. The Miners would sustain an offense drive that would ultimately run out the clock in the game and would give San Manuel the victory. The story of the night was the running attack of the Miners compiling 258 yards on the ground without attempting a pass. Valdez had a huge night totaling 83
yards on 14 carries punching in two touchdowns and a two point conversion. John Ruiz had 71 yards on 10 carries. Jared Gonzales had 67 yards on 10 carries. Daniel Perez had 28 yards on nine carries. Montano ran the ball down to the Tigers’ 12 yard line but the play was called back for a holding penalty – spotting the ball back at the 39 to bring up a third and 19 to go. Just in time for Fall … Pumpkins from the Carlink Ranch!
A sure sign of Autumn is the arrival of the pumpkin patch. (John Hernandez photo)
By John Hernandez Pumpkins are believed to have originated in Central America. Seeds of related plants have been found in Mexico that date back to between 7,000 and 5,500 B.C. Native Americans used pumpkins as a staple in their diet and cut the dried shells into strips to sew into mats. When white settlers arrived in America, they used pumpkin in their diet and learned to cultivate it. They sent seeds back to Europe where it became popular and now pumpkins are grown all over the world. American colonists first made pumpkin pie by filling a hollowed out shell with milk, honey and spices. It is now a traditional part of Thanksgiving dinner. The pumpkin is also a regular part of Halloween. If you want to get ready
for the holidays early, pumpkins are being made available by a local rancher/farmer. Buy them fresh, buy them local. Stephanie and Andrew Smallhouse have been growing pumpkins on 15 acres of their Carlink Ranch near Redington. This historic ranch has been owned by the same family for more than 127 years. These locally grown pumpkins and honey will be for sale during the month of October at 77north Marketplace in Catalina. Beginning October 1, they will be at the Marketplace Thursday through Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. On Friday they will be open from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Andy and Stephanie have been selling fresh produce from the ranch at the Friday Farmer’s Market at 77north for some time now. They
have had watermelons, cantaloupe, squash varieties, cucumbers as well as honey and home made pickles for sale. In these tough times for ranchers they are finding ways to diversify to make ends meet. Andy said that he had not grown pumpkins since he was in high school. While in high school he planted pumpkins, watered, tended and picked them. He would then sell and deliver them to local markets including the old Gordon’s Market. He was able to make and save enough money to pay for college. The Carlink Ranch pumpkins are being sold up in Dewey, Arizona at Mortimer’s Family Farm. Pumpkins by the truckload are also for sale. For more information contact Andrew Smallhouse at (520) 8506183.
