Accident at Resolution Copper sends man to the hospital By Taylor Beard A Superior man is listed in serious condition Monday after an accident at Resolution Copper’s East site. According to a spokesperson for Resolution Copper, Gilbert Chavez, a contractor working for Resolution Cooper on a
crew that’s sinking the #10 shaft at the East Plant, was seriously injured at approximately noon on Friday. Chavez was working at the bottom of the shaft, 4,853 feet below the surface, when a steel door fell about 50 feet from the galloway above, striking him in the lower back.
The door was estimated to weigh between 150 and 200 pounds. No other employees were injured. An investigation is underway by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, Rio Tinto and Resolution to understand how the door became unhinged and fell.
Other employees on site administered First Aid and transported Chavez to the surface where he received additional emergency medical attention from RCM medical responders and the Superior Fire Department before he was taken by helicopter to Scottsdale Memorial Hospital.
All shaft work at the East Plant has been suspended with the exception of water pumping activities pending completion of the investigation. Chavez is employed by Cementation and it is understood that Cementation has been working closely with the family to assist them
in any way they can. Resolution Copper also has offered its assistance with the situation. “Our focus is on Mr. Chavez and his family,” said Jon Cherry, Vice President of Resolution Copper. “He’s a member of the RCM family and our thoughts are with him and his family.”

Mining Report Compiled by Mila Lira Copper prices continue to decline. At press time Copper was being sold at $3.38 a pound. Since September Copper has seen a 1.93 percent loss in price. Florence Copper – Curis Resources Earlier this year, the Town of Florence commissioned independent water resource consultants Montgomery & Associates of Tucson, Arizona (www. elmontgomery.net) to undertake a third-party scientific review of the Florence Copper Project (FCP).
The Montgomery & Associates technical memorandum summarizes results from the focused review of Curis Resources (Arizona) Inc.’s applications for amendments to the Town’s General Plan necessary for the FCP to operate on lands within Florence town boundaries. In particular, it addresses the FCP’s compatibility with the ‘Environmental Planning’ and ‘Water and Wastewater’ elements of the General Plan, ultimately concluding that “the proposed ISCR project could be implemented in a manner
that is consistent with the Town of Florence General Plan.” “The Town of Florence commissioned one of the top water resource consultants in the country to consider this matter. We firmly believe their expert review and testimony will help inform both the Planning and Zoning Commission hearings on Curis’ applications, as well as the Town Council as they move toward a vote on our applications later this fall,” said Curis President and CEO Michael McPhie. “The conclusions of their
analysis clearly validate our position that development of the Florence Copper project can be done in an environmentally sound and socially responsible manner, consistent with the goals of the Town of Florence’s 2020 General Plan.” Specific findings from the technical memorandum include the following: • “Reports for the two groundwater flow models prepared for the (Florence Copper project) site were reviewed. No substantive problems were found that would invalidate results presented in the Curis
report”. • “Surface impacts (at the Florence Copper project) are anticipated to be minimal and limited to the actual infrastructure elements needed. Surface processes can be monitored directly and problems identified can be mitigated”. • “The FCP should have no impact on the ability of Florence to maintain compliance with the Safe Drinking Water program”. • “The proposed FCP operations should have no impact on TOF development or implementation of a wellhead protection
program”. • “All Curis surface facilities are located outside the 100year floodplain of the Gila River”. • “The proposed FCP operations should have no impact to (the Town’s strategy to) … Protect the Town’s water supply through updating and modernizing its wells and conveyance system”. • “Curis is required to obtain approval under a number of local, state and federal permits prior to operation of the ISCR. Superior Chamber of Commerce to host Candidate Forums The Superior Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a candidate forum on Monday, Oct. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the Superior Senior Center. The forum is being held to allow the voters of Superior a chance to hear from the candidates running in the recall election of the Mayor position. Both candidates Mayor Michael Hing and his opponent Jaime Valenzuela have committed to participating in the
forum. The forum will be professionally moderated to allow voters the opportunity to bring forward questions that concern them and provide the candidates an opportunity to share their campaign platform and vision for Superior. Savings allow district to give back to taxpayers By Taylor Beard Earlier this year, the Superior Unified School District pursued an energy savings program with Ameresco Southwest, better known at APS Energy Services. The program was designed to enable the district to leverage energy savings dollars through the design and implementation of a broad range of comprehensive energy solutions and risk management strategies. APS performed an in-depth analysis of the schools’ facilities to develop a comprehensive energy solution and will install the required elements, along with monitoring the system to ensure energy savings during a 15-year period. The energy cost savings will be used to pay back the capital investment of
the project; and, should the project not meet the guaranteed savings, APS will be responsible to pay the difference. This program has enabled the district to do things such as install new lights for the football field and put in a new scoreboard, as well as replace old equipment that would typically be funded from a capital budget. In preparation for the energy program, the District was able to refund its outstanding school improvement bonds. The refunding replaced outstanding maturities paying 5.0-6.25 percent in interest with a flat rate of 2.50 percent, while keeping the payment dates same. The result of this refinancing represents a savings to the District of $28,370, over the life of
the debt which is savings net of any fees or costs to the District. “We want to say thank you,” said Board President Cyndi Benson. “We are happy as a board and we are happy to be able to give this back to the taxpayers of Superior because they’ve always been supportive of education and have always supported any kind of bonding that we need to do. So the ability to refinance and bring the savings back to them has been very worthwhile.” Superintendent Pete Guzman explained, “It’s our way, as the governing board, of giving back to the community, especially when they are so good in supporting the school in overrides and bond issues. This is just a good way to give back.”

CVIT celebrates 10 year anniversary! Cobre Valley Institute of Technology (CVIT) was established in November 2000. It is one of 13, voter approved, Joint Technical Education Districts (JTED) in Arizona. The JTED system along with community colleges, universities and primary and secondary schools is one of four pillars of Arizona’s educational system. Each JTED takes on a challenge to prepare Arizona Students for highly competitive workforce. As a result of the efforts of JTED system, more than 100 school districts have the opportunity to provide innovative Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs for students. CVIT’s funding comes from two sources: state appropriations and secondary property taxes from its five member school districts. In November 2000, voters in Hayden/Winkelman, Miami and Superior school districts voted to form a JTED. San Carlos citizens decided to vote to join CVIT in November
2006. In November 2008 Globe voters decided to invest in high quality CTE education and said yes to CVIT. CVIT receives funds and distributes them based on two program delivery methods: satellite and central programs. Satellite programs are taught on the campus that student regularly attends (home school) and are approved by the Arizona Department of Education. CVIT financially supports those programs to ensure that students gain vital technical knowledge and skills in state-of the-art facilities. Some of the programs include Agriculture, Audi Visual, Education Professions, Early Childhood Education, Drafting, Construction Technologies, Automotive Technologies, Welding, Business Management and Administrative Services, Marketing, Hospitality, Culinary Arts, Information Technologies. Central Programs are CTE programs taught on facilities other than student’s regular
campus and are approved by Arizona Department of Education. These programs are taught at CVIT learning sites and are supported by community partners and Gila Community College (GCC). CVIT has partnered with GCC to provide an ethical, productive and technically trained workforce that meets Global needs of business and industry. Through the years CVIT offered: Fire Science, CNA, Electrical Instrumentation, Graphic Design and Welding central programs. All Central Programs are offered for college credit, with no cost to the student, and upon successful completion of studies, students receive Community College Certificates and/or are eligible for industry testing and certifications. Today’s workplace is challenging like never before. Employers demand that workers have solid skills as well as ability to adapt to a change and new technology. High school
students are in a position that their parents never imagined. Advances in information processing, communications, electronics, and unstable
economic environment that create difficulties of getting and keeping employment have changed and will continue to change working environment

Superior Rotary honors Students of the Month By Mila Lira The Superior Rotary Club recently recognized four students from the Superior Junior-Senior High School at their weekly club meeting. The students recognized for month of October were: Gabby Salcido, Gabby is the daughter of Dora and Joe Salcido. She is an eighth
grader at the Junior High. She is currently the Student Body President and is a member of the undefeated girls Volleyball team. Superior Head Start to host car show by Superio Car Club On Thursday, Oct. 20, from 9 am – 12: Noon, the Superior Head Start Preschool will host a car show by the Superio Car Club to celebrate ‘Take It Outside Week’. Did you know that today’s children spend less time outdoors than any generation in history? In our minds, young children and the great outdoors go together. We imagine them skipping rope, playing ball, playing hopscotch, swimming and other fun,
active pursuits. Yet, they are more likely to be in front of the television. ‘Take it Outside Week,’ Oct. 16-22, is all about rectifying that. The Head Start Body Start National Center for Physical Development and Outdoor Play is encouraging teachers, students, parents and caregivers to make outdoor play and activities a regular part of the life of children. The program, “I Am Moving I Am
Learning” (IMIL) is a part of that encouragement. The car show will take place in the Head Start parking lot at 150 Lobb Avenue. The community is invited to the car show and to visit with the Head Start class and see how physical activities are incorporated into the daily classroom routine. IMIL seeks to increase daily moderate to vigorous physical activity,improve the quality of movement activities intentionally

Arizona Department of Education reports graduation rate for JTED’s is 96.79 percent. This is far above the overall state graduation rate which is in the 75 percent range. Graduation rates are based on cohort years for comparison with other populations. The average related placement rate is 66.44 percent. This rate includes only the immediate past year graduates who were placed in postsecondary or advanced training, in the military or related work. For the past 10 years CVIT helped to educate many productive members of society. CVIT students continue on in community colleges, universities and technical schools. School Superintendent Orlenda Roberts announces public symposiums on “Arizona Ready” FLORENCE – Are you a resident who is interested in improving children’s educational opportunities in Pinal County? If so, School Superintendent Orlenda Roberts invites you to participate with school district leaders in a symposium that will explain and plan for Governor Jan Brewer’s “Arizona Ready” education reform policy. “We invite any Pinal County resident to take part in any of our two sessions that will explain what ‘Arizona Ready’ is and how to prepare for it,” Superintendent Roberts said. “We are looking to engage county leaders, educators, parents, business owners – anyone who has a stake in the future of our children’s education.” The Pinal County School Superintendent’s Office will host two symposiums for county residents. The first one will take
place at the Florence Holiday Inn on Friday, Oct. 21. The second one will be at the Superior High School Gymnasium on Friday, Oct. 28. Both symposiums will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 12:30 p.m. “Our aim for the symposiums is to inform participants of the state model for regionally delivered educational services and support, this will help advance the goals set forth in ‘Arizona Ready’,” Roberts said. “Governor Brewer’s educational reform plan identifies relevant, practical, locally-defined and regionally delivered service and support to schools and school districts. This new plan has set an aggressive framework that will assist all of our public schools in ensuring that all students are prepared for success in college and career.” The School Superintendent
said the half-day symposiums have been designed as highly collaborative with a heavy emphasis on attendee’s participation. This will help the Pinal County Education Services Agency (PCESA) in developing a strategic plan for extending the agency’s current programs and services. By Taylor Beard Homecoming rocked this year! The Pep assembly was full of smash and grab fun with karaoke, where all the ladies swooned for football player Martin Granillo, and sheet races complete with competing teachers…Mrs. Villaverde was all about it! The Homecoming royalty were partially announced leaving the Seniors waiting for the actual game—stretching out the pressure just that much longer. The Junior Class elected Courtney Urquijo and Louis Fuentes for their royalty, while the Sophomore class decided upon Ariel Alonzo and Cesar Villalobos; the Freshmen were pretty excited for Lindsay Duarte and Ricardo Ochoa as they received their sashes. Then came the parade and the massive tailgate party that followed leading up to the game…no doubt the Titan fans were a little fearful when they pulled up to see the crowd amassing. Before kickoff, the senior athletes were announced with their families and were received by a roaring crowd,
excited for what they are moving on to. Then there was the game…ohhh, what a game! The Panthers attacked and took down their opponent with surprising ease, scoring their first touchdown within minutes of start. Among the many fabulous plays was Louis Fuentes being pursued by a Titan who had the ill will to try and snatch him from behind…bad move on this kid’s part since dear Louie flung his opponent like he was a fly, and then ran the touchdown home. It was Epic! Another fantastic play took place between Martin Granillo and Chris Grap… going for the extra point, the Titans swarmed towards Quarterback Granillo who swiftly tossed the ball to an open Grap who buzzed it right in. Just before halftime, Channel Three showed up to massive cheers from the crowd…the Superior Panthers Homecoming Game won the vote to be presented on Channel 3’s Varsity Zone with Liana Gonzales. To say that the fans and players were excited would be an

Titans in homecoming hash out understatement. At halftime, the waiting was finally over‌the three finalists for King and Queen were all present. For Queen were: Lorena Medrano, Adrienne Hernandez and Shayna Wickwire. For King were: Chris Grap, Jordan Romero and Jesse Zavala. The mass of fans cheered and screamed as Adrienne Hernandez was crowned Queen and Jesse Zavala, King. First Attendants were: Jordan Romero and Lorena Medrano, with second Attendants being: Chris Grap and Shayna Wickwire. All of the royalty then piled into their waiting carriages (or festively
decorated cars) to lead the parade around the stadium as halftime entertainment. Now‌by halftime the boys had a huge lead of 40 points with 48-8 and once they jumped back into the
fray only to widen the lead another seven points. Martin Granillo passed for 223 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for 230 yards and two touchdowns. He led the defense with two
sacks and 12 tackles. He also caused two fumbles. Louie Fuentes had 171 yards receiving and caught all four of the touchdowns from Granillo. Chris Grap rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Matthew Zavala had an interception and Jordan
Romero recorded a safety. The final (and quite awesome) score was 61-14 thus leaving the Superior Panthers in excellent form to charge into the playoffs the seventh seed. Their first playoff game will take place this Friday, Oct. 21, in Superior against Salome
(currently in 10th place), with kickoff at 7 p.m. Following this match, the winning team will go up against second seeded team Joy Christian on Friday, Oct. 28. Come out and roar for the Panthers, these boys have been working for it!

Corazon y Alma Cultural Center kicks off By Taylor Beard The Corazon y Alma Cultural Center opened its doors to awaiting crowds Saturday; so many that they spilled onto the street as the guest speakers verbalized their love and appreciation for the center’s creation. Several guest speakers were on hand to show this appreciation and speak on the importance of such a center, including Eda Zavala, Lorraine Garcia-Nakata and Mark Siegwarth of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. For its opening, the center was filled with beautiful and intricate altars honoring the dead‌each with their own special feeling
denoting the beauty of the individual being honored. There were several types of crosses accentuating the spiritual setting of each of the altars and pan de los muertos, baked for this specific purpose. Each altar was filled with stunning photos of the honored. The ceremony was rounded out by Miss San Carlos Apache, who spoke about her culture and the wonderful things she has learned about the culture of Superior. She finished up by singing to the crowd, then introduced her sister who accompanied her as she asked the crowd to join in on a traditional Apache dance. The Corazon y Alma
Cultural Center will be open 5-7 days a week with programs and exhibitions revolving in and out for the next two months. October is focused on Dia de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead and will be showcasing the Latina women of Superior from the early 1900s to the 1950s. November will open with programs that include many cultural experiences such as Chinese, Laotian, MiddleEastern, and African American experiences in both Superior and the Copper Corridor. Dia de Colores, a bright success! By Taylor Beard Day of Colors, it was certainly that! All sorts of colors in all shapes and sizes, from cars to altars to paintings to even, horses; it was a spectacular day. The car enthusiasts showed up in masses with beautiful, movable works of art that were truly a wonder to behold. Many people wandered the streets, listening to cool tunes and talking about which car they would buy if they could. For me it was the incredible cream Zephyr that was for sale…it wouldbe mine if only I didn’t have to pay off my student loans! The car show was a huge success, as was the art in the park with children happily painting under the gazebo. The art exhibit was filled with incredible objects like the incredible and intricate boxes by Lorrie Polley or the coolly carved wooden horses. There were festive paintings and delicate sketches and figurines galore! The Art Tour was full of interesting studios to visit, showing visitors all aspects of creation to final product. The People’s Choice award went to Jon Moreno, while the Judges’ Choice Awards went to Anna Jeffrey and Jon Moreno, Ty Hadden and Bernie Nienber. The day ended in the lovely twilight of the evening, under the stars and lanterns of the new Magma Club… enjoying delectable food to beautiful music. “On behalf of the Superior Chamber of Commerce, we would like to thank all the sponsors, volunteers, and supporters…also a great big thanks to Jim Elgan for putting on a fantastic car show,” said event coordinator Rachelle Casillas.

Lady Panthers move towards victory By Taylor Beard The gorgeous gals of Superior went up against some tough opponents during Wednesday’s game in Globe against the Globe Tigers, with the final score ending 0-3 Globe. The team has been struggling through a difficult season, definitely trying to firm up their sea legs as a new team. Coach Cheryl Lopez looked at the brighter side of things, explaining,
“Globe games were awesome! Freshmen won both games easily as did J.V. Varsity came out with nothing to lose. We lost first game 25 -18 but played well. Second game the girls were even more confident and played like pros. The game went back and forth ...we had three chances to pull out the win but had two bad serves... resulted in second loss 26-24. Third game was excellent again; however,

team for 15 loving years and have produced many of the fantastic athletes that have graced and currently grace the high school courts. “We are just excited because this is the beginning of their career in volleyball and they have done so well and can go so far,” enthuses Richard. On this year’s seventh grade team there were 11 outstanding athletes, while on the eighth grade team stood 12 with three managers. The Tamerons are conscious to put all their athletes into play, not just their best line – they want to make sure that all of the girls get the equal experience that they need to be the best they can be. Rosie Tameron is equally in awe of the team she coached this year, with nothing but the highest praise for her girls.
“We are so excited about the zero losses this season. These girls are wonderful, very respectful and very dedicated with great attitudes. They are always willing to go out and do just what they needed to when we put them on the court; they are outstanding and each one is full of determination,” she said. Obviously, we have some bright stars rising in our midst. The seventh and eighth grade teams are currently in first place is the North Division Conference and they will be playing this Saturday, Oct. 22, in Kearny for the final tournament.
