T
he year 2018 has flown by and one of my favorite months, November. For me, November is a time of great reflection, a time to honor our Veterans, it is a time be thankful for all that we have been blessed with. It is a time to catch up with friends and family and enjoy the fruits of our labor. November 2018 has been momentous for Superior. Our beloved Superior Panthers have achieved a State Football Championship and we are thankful that this victory has finally come, and that our athletes are healthy and strong. These students also continue to strive academically: they are our future. We watched our smelter stack come down, with a sense of somber sadness in memorial to this structure and those who worked there and with great optimism for what the future will bring. This is a time to be thankful for everyone who puts their heart and soul into our community. All of our Town Staff members who have been dedicated to improving how our town operates. Our Police and Fire departments have added new equipment, increased training on everything from arson, domestic violence, communication, de-escalation and many other relevant trainings. The Public Works department continues to work on road and street improvements, our new resurface of Main Street has been a major improvement and more is on the way. We received good news that our Waste Water collection
system is in good shape and we will be able to construct a more efficient waste water treatment plant in 2019. Our library is open more hours and this year, a new food service contractor was hired to improve food quality at the Senior Center. For the first time in many years, the Town has a full time Town Clerk and our administration department is running full steam ahead to keep the Continued on page 3

entire town running smoothly and in compliance with all regulations. Our Youth Council gets stronger every year and currently they are responsible for choosing playground equipment sponsored by Resolution Copper at the US 60 Caboose Park. Many hands make light work and if it were not for the dedication of our numerous non-profits and school groups some of our progress may not have been achieved. Our most recent successes as a community are because we all working together. The Superior Chamber of Commerce continues to work on supporting our local businesses, promoting Superior and hosting large events that attract thousands of people to Superior. Rebuild Superior, Inc., one of our newest non-profits, has hired consultants who have provided strategic direction for the Town that will help us improve our economic diversity. Rebuild Superior, Inc. has also been focused on beautifying Superior by offering the free paint program and organizing free dump days, they have much more in store. We must also commend groups like the Superior Optimist Club and Rotary Clubs who provide activities and events for the community and support the youth. Our VFW is one of the strongest Veterans organizations in the area; they spend time mentoring our youth and their membership have a renewed energy to serve the Veterans of Superior and the surrounding areas. Our local Superior Food Bank is always there to lend a helping hand; they remain dedicated to ensuring everyone has food in Superior. The Legends of Superior Trails Inc. continues to advocate for new and improved trail construction. The Red Bears continue to educate our youth on hunting and outdoor recreation safety and they are always available to cook for community barbecues and events. Our churches are active and involved in the community, always there to provide spiritual guidance and love. Our Little League continues to offer quality baseball and softball programs at affordable prices, they are the first steps for many of our athletes who go on to become champions athletically and academically. We are fortunate to have many partners in the business

Superior’s kindergartners are ready for Thanksgiving One might imagine that the youngest of children may only be thinking about the days off of school during the Thanksgiving break but kindergartners at John F. Kennedy Elementary school in Superior shared what they were thankful for and what they are looking forward to eating. When the question of “What are you Thankful for” was asked, family, friends, pets and spending time with family were the majority answers. Pets became a big topic with
many kindergartners sharing that they had pet rabbits and they were thankful for having these furry friends. Just about all of them were anxious to have time to spend with their parents and cousins. These youngsters, must have been paying attention to Cookie Monster, when he tells us to eat a few less cookies and eat healthy food. Kyla said she was looking forward to eating turkey and vegetables; Natalie said is can’t wait to eat broccoli; and Luna was excited to eat carrots. Some
Happy kindergartners learn about the country’s first Thanksgiving.
of the kids wanted less traditional Thanksgiving foods: they wanted spaghetti and pizza. There were also big cheers for pumpkin pie, cookies and cupcakes on their Thanksgiving dessert plates. These Kindergartners participated in an interactive video on the Thanksgiving story and all decided that while the Pilgrims may have eaten lobster and seal in their first Thanksgiving meals. They were glad that those were not on their menu, today.

Making Superior beautiful again It was a busy day for volunteers from the Superior Chamber of Commerce and Rebuild Superior Inc. Saturday as they set out to paint the exteriors of two homes that have been vacant for many
years. Prior to painting, the Town of Superior had the lots cleared of overgrowth and debris, then Lane Read, owner/operator of Desert Glass Window Cleaning,
pressure washed the houses and volunteered to spray paint the outside. Last, but not least, the 11 “painting volunteers put the finishing touches on the homes at 309 Magma and 460
Newmont. Everyone went home exhausted but satisfied that we all made just a little bit of difference toward the beautification of Superior.

Desert Wells Multi-Use Area reopens with reconstructed entryway, resurfaced parking area with guardrails; project completed under budget PHOENIX – Users of Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs) will find improved access and parking as the Desert Wells Multi-Use Area has reopened after three months of reconstruction, State Land Commissioner Lisa A. Atkins announced. The estimated final cost of reconstruction of the entryway, driveway and parking area is $130,000, about $70,000 under budget. The popular OHV area, near mile marker 207 on U.S. 60 west of Superior, is the only OHV riding area with designated trails on Arizona State Trust Land, which
is managed by the Arizona State Land Department. Reconstruction began in early August, during which the facility was closed to the public. Guardrails will help prevent vehicles larger than OHVs from entering the Multi-Use Area from the parking lot. The lot has been regraded and reconstructed. The improvements are funded by grants from Arizona State Parks and Trails and the U.S. Highway Administration’s Recreational Trails Program. “The enhancements will allow many more years of enjoyable and responsible
use of the Multi-Use Area,” Commissioner Atkins said. “The State Land Department is pleased to reopen Desert Wells as cooler fall weather has arrived in Arizona’s deserts, and we appreciate OHV users patiently waiting for the work to be completed.” About the Arizona State Land Department Public education is by far the largest beneficiary of Trust land managed by the Arizona State Land Department, whose mission since 1915 is to manage the assets of a multi-generational perpetual trust in alignment with the interests of the Trust’s
13 beneficiaries and Arizona’s future. All uses of the land and resources held in the Trust must benefit the Trust, a fact that distinguishes it from the way public land, such as parks or national forests, may be used or managed. While public use of Trust land is not prohibited, it is regulated to ensure protection of the land and its resources and compensation to the beneficiaries for its use. Today the Arizona State Land Department pro-actively manages more than 9.2 million acres of Trust land, which is 13 percent of the land within the State of Arizona.
