According to the yearbook, students were very involved in school activities like the school plays, the Glee Club, the Pep Club, Speech Arts Program, the Junior-Senior Prom, and sports. The students were not only from Hayden, but also from nearby areas. I remember many of the students, although they were quite a bit older than myself. The many local business ads posted in the last part of the yearbook really proved how busy the Hayden/Winkelman area was then. I was pleased

Community Pulling Together for Jena Martinez Inzuza
T
his Saturday the friends of Jena Martinez Inzunza are going all-out to support her as she deals with the difficulties of cancer treatment. Jena is a native of Hayden and has taught at the Hayden-Winkelman Schools for 25 years. A fund raising golf tournament is this Saturday, Nov. 11, which is Veterans’ Day. Held at the Hayden Golf Course, registration begins at 6 a.m. and tee-off is at 7:30 a.m. Cart rentals are available. It’s a three person scramble with one “A” player per team. But that’s not all. There will be a jumping castle, a cake walk, a disc jockey, raffles, and food and drinks not to mention a corn hole tournament and a horseshoe competition. It will be a full day. Jena’s friends want her to concentrate on her health and well-being and not her rising medical expenses. I hope our beautiful weather lately ensures a great turnout. For more information, call Monica Badillo at (520) 591-1122 or Michelle Gonzales at (480) 888-6598. The Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce and Rip’s NAPA Store will present the Fall Festival and the K Town Car Show on Saturday, Nov. 18, beginning at 9 a.m. The car show is best appreciated in the morning, when all the cars will be present. There will be all sorts of events, food and music. The Fall Festival will continue into the afternoon with many other attractions. David Orzell signs the agreement between Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center and the local health care foundations, transferring the maintenance of the Kearny Clinic.
GILA
Continued from page 4 CVRMC the Kearny Clinic will assume responsibility for all insurances, the maintenance and cleaning of the buildings and grounds, and the securing of new tenants. A percentage of revenue will be given to the Foundation for its work. The board of the foundation is to be commended for charting a strong relationship with the hospital, assuring good health care for the Copper Basin. The Las Vegas shootings affected the whole nation, and we truly felt it personally in the Copper Basin. Now there has been a mass shooting at a small Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. I’m a gun owner. A man in Texas used his rifle to come to the aid of the church people in Texas. These are simple facts. Now, can we take these facts, as well as those from many other tragic events in this nations, and begin to fashion the end to such tragedies? To tell the truth, I don’t know how to begin the dialogue that we all need. I’m tired of praying to God for the dead and injured. I’m praying now that their sacrifice will never be needed again.

Hitter Shelby Yocum and setter Savannah Rodriguez were named 2nd Team All-Region
while libero Daniella Hinojos and hitter Tara Lorona earned Honorable Mention honors. The Lady Cats, who were the No. 14-seed at last weekend’s state tournament, were defeated in the first round by No. 3 and eventual 2017 State Champion St. Michael, 3 – 0. The Cardinals won 12 of 13 sets on their way to winning the title.
ADOT addresses Renaissance Festival traffic The State Transportation board met last week for a work session. On that agenda included an update regarding the special event transportation plan for the Arizona Renaissance festival. Local residents of Gold Canyon, eastern Pinal County and Southern Gila County, had expressed concern to Steve Stratton who represents Pinal, Gila and Graham counties on the State Transportation Board that something needed to changed. The success of the festival has at times created up to 11-mile back ups in the area. “This traffic affects our communities and our events that occur during the festival season,” explained Mayor Al Gameros of Globe. He along with Superior, Mayor Mila Besich-Lira, attended the meeting to share their concerns on behalf of the communities east of the festival. Randy Everett, District Administrator for
ADOT shared the plan for the improved traffic flow. The proposed changes include dual right turn lanes in movements from Eastbound US 60 into the event grounds. Increasing the radius of Gate A to facilitate the entrance into the festival grounds and additional message boards will be added. Those attending the event from the east will enter the fair grounds through gate B, which will eliminate those coming from the east from having to merge with those coming from the west. The next steps for the changes will be for the Renaissance to complete the permit application and for all parties to go over the changes. The Renaissance will need to construct the proposed changes and evaluation of the effectiveness of the improvements in April or May of 2018. The Renaissance Festival begins on Feb. 10 and runs through April 1, 2018.

Thank you, Superiorites. On behalf of my brother Rudy and my wife Jessie, I wish to thank everyone for the attention and friendship they gave to our sister, Rosie Casillas Young, during her illness. We grew up in Superior, and although we have moved away, it is apparent we still have many friends in the area. I visited Rosie frequently during her illness, took her to her doctor appointments, and brought her to San Antonio to spend summers and the holidays with us. She would tell me of all the friends she had, and the many ways they helped her. I wish I could thank all of you personally, but I am afraid I might miss someone. You know who you are. I do wish to thank, however, her neighbor, Cecilia Lopez, whom I could always count on whenever I could not reach Rosie. Also, Rosie Martinez, her dear friend, who was always there for her, up to the end. And, a special thanks to our cousin, Bobby Y. Casillas, and his wife Carmen, who were constantly looking after her during her illness. I also wish to thank all of you who attended her memorial mass. I could not attend, due to the death of our son that same week, but Rudy attended, and he told me of the generous support in her memory. Also thanks to the Casillas and Lugo families from out of town, who attended. I will always be grateful. Charles Casillas San Antonio, TX
