LETTER TO THE EDITOR Local impacts of tax bill Taxpayers and voters of the Tri-Community and Copper Corridor will soon come face to face with what the Tax Cut and Jobs Act means for our communities. Based on demographics of the region, it’s clear that most local taxpayers won’t be major beneficiaries. In fact, Eastern Pinal taxpayers will be big losers if adding a trillion + dollars to the federal deficit triggers cuts to entitlement programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and Food Stamps. Rich people and big corporations aren’t located here so their gains won’t be felt here. At best a handful of small businesses may benefit at the margins from changes in tax rules regarding treatment of pass through profits. Another handful who currently deduct contributions to churches and charities may gain from a doubling of the standard deduction. But religious institutions and non profits themselves may be losers as local donors lose tax incentives to make contributions. On the job growth front, Eastern Pinal County needs investments in infrastructure, education and training to both grow and access good paying jobs. Tax cuts targeting big

corporations and the super wealthy will produce none of the above. Even a best case scenario put forward by corporate tax cut devotees fails to envision a surge in good paying jobs to replace those lost to mine, mill and smelter closures in places like San Manuel, Mammoth, Oracle, Hayden, Winkelman, Kearny and Superior. Many Tri-Community residents will recall that what closed the San Manuel mine, mill, smelter and refinery, when still profitable wasn’t the price of copper, labor contracts, environmental regulations, the corporate tax rate or some combination thereof. It was demands made by a multi national corporation - BHP Billiton headquartered in Australia - for an unattainably high return on capital investment and a tax write off that Congress is leaving untouched in current negotiations. Of course, the well being of workers and their families never figured in these corporate calculations any more than the well being of ordinary tax payers figured prominently in congressional deliberations. The rock solid heart of the new federal tax Continued on page 3

TAX BILL
Continued from page 2 cut legislation is not “middle class tax cuts”, which are uncertain and, at best, piddling, but huge cuts designed to make Corporate America more profitable than it currently is. Ironically because 35% of US corporations are owned by foreign investors the payoff to them from this legislation is gigantic.
The claim that going deeper into debt to aid big business serves the common good is ridiculous on its face. Congress, as of this writing, is wrapping up the Tax Cut and Jobs Act before sending it to the President for his signature. Unsurprisingly their most recent move is to
make additional cuts to taxes on the wealthy. What we now know is that when the tax bill’s impacts are finally tallied through real life experience, there will be a few big winners and and lots of losers including our children and children’s children who will assume responsibility for the nation’s
staggering debt load. If the citizens of the nation can’t stop this massively unpopular legislation now, opportunities for redress at the next election in November, 2018 loom on the horizon. /s/ Frank Pierson Oracle, AZ

Superior Fire Department battles two blazes last week The Superior Fire Department battled two blazes last week. In the early morning of Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017, at about 3:30 a.m., Superior Fire Department was paged out for a structure fire reported on the 400 block of East Street in Superior. Superior Fire personnel arrived in an engine to find a completely engulfed structure fire to a single story residence with a crawlspace in the 400 block of Moffatt. The roof had already caved in so a defensive attack was conducted and stopped the fire from spreading to a building to the north that was exposed and starting to catch fire. There was notable sustained wind blowing from east to west during the situation. An additional Superior FD engine and tender arrived for water supply and personnel support as well as crews from Queen Valley Fire District (as part of an automatic aid agreement the two departments have). Superior PD was on scene assisting with traffic and crowd control.
The structure involved and the nearby larger house on the property appeared vacant. A power line was on fire which was a threat but the fire on the pole was extinguished with Arizona Public Service (APS) determining it safe. There were no reported power outages, however, the pole had to be replaced. There were no reported injuries and the fire damage was primarily contained to the involved structure and adjacent power pole. The fire appeared suspicious and is under investigation. On Friday evening, Superior Fire Department was dispatched for a report of a structure fire in the 600 block of W. Main St. in Superior. The on-duty crew quickly responded in the primary structure engine and arrived on scene in a few minutes to find a working fire inside of an abandoned commercial structure. The fire was burning a pile of wood fuels with sections of the old building and was quickly Continued on page 5

FIRES
Continued from page 4 spreading. The first arriving crew performed an aggressive direct attack on the main fire and contained it. Additional reserve firefighters arrived a few minutes later in the second engine and provided personnel and water support as well as incident command. Queen Valley Fire District sent a crew, as part of an automatic aid agreement, and assisted with the incident. Further fire was
discovered behind and below the structure in the creek and was saturated with water to ensure that the fire would not spread. Superior Police Department was on scene providing traffic control and had detained two subjects in the area of the fire for investigation. Florence Fire Department assisted with providing an arson investigator and the incident is being investigated with charges pending.

Dear Santa ...
As has happened in days of yore, children gathered in classes, at home, snuck a little private time and took their opportunity to reach out in thanks to Santa, and, in hope of delightful gifts under the tree come Christmas morning. He, in turn, shared with us some of the special local letters that touched his heart or really gave him reason to let out a hardy “Ho ho ho!” of laughter. Now, even though Santa can read the heart as well, we have to rely on just our eyes, so where the pen was pressed lightly or the scanner shone too brightly, there may be words missing or misunderstood. Don’t let that distract you from the enjoyment of these sweet missives.

Work begins on Arnett Canyon segment of the LOST Trail Arizona Conservation Crews have been working on the Arnett Canyon Segment of the Legends of the Superior Trails. The first segment that they are working on is the Southeastern segment entering the canyon off of Forest Road Four just south of Superior. The trail will connect the Arizona Trail to Superior while also developing two different loop experiences off the Arnett Canyon segment. Over the years, the canyon has grown in popularity for hikers, mountain bikers and equestrian users, but official trails have not been
constructed. The new trail alignment and gates will help to keep recreation users from crossing the creek in too many places and will also help to keep the cattle out of the canyon. All of the construction is expected to be completed by early 2019. “We are very pleased with the progress that has been made on the trail. This new trail will be a wonderful attraction for visitors to Superior and provide an improved recreation area for our residents, said Superior Mayor Mila Besich-Lira.
Fall is a wonderful time of year to hike in Arnett Canyon. Soon it will be an official part of the LOST.
Thank you for your support this past year.

ADEQ Announces $8,600 Brownfields Grant to the Town of Superior; grant monies to fund asbestos survey of old Belmont Hotel building Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) officials announced today an $8,600 Brownfields Grant award to the Town of Superior to conduct an asbestos survey of the Belmont Hotel building constructed on Main Street in 1935. The survey work is set to begin Thursday, Dec. 21, 2017. The Town of Superior intends to conduct remediation and abatement of contaminants based on these survey results and to prepare to make the site available for commercial development.
Season’s Greetings from Superior His & Her Hair Co.
“The Belmont Hotel is an iconic building to Superior’s downtown, standing in the center of the community and serving as a symbol of the economic challenges that we have faced,” says Superior Town Manager Todd Pryor. “Returning this building to usefulness and productivity will serve as a symbol of the Town’s recovery and hope for the future.” ADEQ Brownfields Assistance Program (BAP) Established in 2003, BAP conducts projects through Arizona’s State Response Grant using funds provided by the Environmental Protection Agency. The program has funded more than 70 projects, assisting entities from local governments, schools, hospitals and nonprofits to tribes in completing environmental assessments, cleanup and restoration. Superior Fire Department: Firefighter reserves wanted The Superior Fire Department responds to a high amount of medical, motor vehicle accident, and fire calls throughout the year. In comparison to other communities of similar size, Superior has a higher than normal call average. The department is dependent on trained volunteers to work with the full time on duty crews. The Superior Fire Department would like to invite anyone interested in serving as a reserve/part-time paid firefighter to submit an application to the Superior Town Hall, located at 199 Lobb Avenue. There is reserve testing on Jan. 6, 2018.

Sometimes it’s what you did and sometimes it’s what you do: The Art of Being Superior
Christopher Villaverde and Valerie Garcia-Denogean
It has been brought to our attention that Mrs. Valerie Rae Garcia-Denogean won the Teacher of the Year award for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3584. In the meantime, Chris Villaverde won Firefighter of the Year. Both were also, in this last week, named VFW District 10’s First Place Winners, beating out contenders from Apache Junction, Chandler, Florence, Casa Grande and Maricopa. They will go on to compete against others from all over the state, and, eventually, from around the country. These two outstanding Superiorites are making the community proud! The public at large is being offered their own opportunity to do something to make themselves and their community proud. There are three days open in which to volunteer to help bring the The Garden Project, at John F. Kennedy Elementary, to fruition. Volunteers are needed to create a garden for the youth of Superior.
We’re Cooking for Christmas Eat, drink and be merry, as we extend our warmest holiday wishes to all our customers!
From all of us at -
Los Hermanos
Thursday, Dec. 21 and Friday, Dec. 22, followed by Thursday, Dec. 28 are the days which volunteers are sought for, with a start time of 10 a.m. It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, or, even if you have tools. All help will be appreciated. Tools will be provided. Of course, if you have some, bringing them along will also be appreciated. If you have questions on the project you may call or text Mike Montiel at 480-272-3786.

ADOT and its plows are prepared for winter weather. Are you? Drivers should think twice before traveling during snowstorms With winter on the horizon, the Arizona Department of Transportation has spent
months preparing for snow and ice that storms will dump on the state’s higher elevations. ADOT has 375 certified snowplow operators ready to operate the agency’s nearly 200 snowplows, which are stationed around the state to keep people and commerce moving when snow falls on highways. Now it’s time for drivers to do their part, starting with following essential safety tips available at azdot.gov/KnowSnow to prepare themselves and their vehicles for winter travel. That includes slowing down, leaving extra room behind the
next vehicle, taking along warm clothing, blankets, food and water, and packing an emergency kit. Your preparations should include staying apprised of weather conditions and being ready to postpone travel so ADOT’s
snowplows can clear roadways. A highway takes much longer to plow when it’s jammed with vehicles that had no business traveling on a roadway that’s slick with snow and ice. That happened last Christmas Eve, when a
powerful storm dropped inches of snow per hour, closing a long stretch of Interstate 40 in a tangle of crashes and stranded vehicles that took many hours to clear. A snowplow can’t clear a highway if it’s pulled out
of service when another vehicle hits it. That happened several times last winter, fortunately without significant injures. Every vehicle, from semis to passenger cars, needs to give snowplows room to Continued on page 19

SNOWPLOWS Continued from page 16
work – a minimum of four vehicle lengths to allow room to stop. Avoid passing a snowplow that’s clearing a highway until the driver pulls over to let traffic pass. Never assume a snowplow operator knows your vehicle is nearby. If you can’t see the plow driver, there’s a good chance the driver can’t see you. Always remember: The safest place on a highway when it’s snowing is behind a snowplow. Heading to sled and throw snowballs? Do that in designated areas away from highways, not parked on shoulders, which are for emergencies only. Parking on a highway shoulder to play in the snow distracts other drivers and can interfere with first responders who may need to use the shoulder. If that isn’t reason enough, keep in mind that a snowplow can hurl large amounts of snow and ice well away from a highway. ADOT recently installed signs along a stretch of US 180 northwest of Flagstaff reminding drivers that parking on the shoulder is for emergencies only. Those heading to popular snow-play areas should be prepared to spend extended time in winter conditions, as
traffic at day’s end is often heavy on highways including US 180 toward Flagstaff. In addition, highways can have extended closures from crashes and weather conditions. Prepare for trips by visiting the ADOT Know Snow website (azdot.gov/KnowSnow), which has tips on making sure your vehicle is ready for winter driving, driving safely on highways with snow and ice, driving safely while snowplows work and packing supplies in case a vehicle becomes stranded. For example, a little cat litter or sand will provide traction if a vehicle becomes stuck along the roadway. Before heading out, drivers can call 511 or visit ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov for the latest highway conditions. The website features realtime images along state highways that give drivers a glimpse of weather in various regions. ADOT’s Twitter account (@ArizonaDOT) and Facebook page (facebook. com/AZDOT) are sources of real-time information and interaction. When a freeway closure or other major traffic event occurs, ADOT’s free app available at ADOTAlerts. com will send critical information directly to app users in

Pray for Our Leaders
n Ezra 1 we read: “The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me, Cyrus King of Persia, all the kingdoms of the earth and has appointed me to build a temple for Him in Jerusalem.” What a concept, that a government official could hear and honor God’s commands. Paul, in 1 Timothy 2 tells us to pray for all those in authority – government officials – so that we can live peaceful and godly lives. It doesn’t start with those in leadership, but with us! If we cover our officials in prayer, they will hopefully obey the Lord and do as He
directs. We are responsible for our communities and what happens there; actually, God put you and I in charge of them. Honest and sincere prayer is powerful and life changing. It moves the un-movable to obey God, whether they know Him or not. God chose an unlikely person to accomplish His plan for a nation. He loves doing that because it keeps the action exciting. Don’t be surprised if God asks you to help Him change your city for the better! Just be available and willing to do it!
